Reviews (page 6 of 14)
Prince commands a sound that is uniquely his as is his persona. This album is one of the most complete ones I've listened to. An album that should be listened to from top to bottom all the way through and doing so you get a full picture of Prince's presence. The synths, guitar riffs, and Prince's voice all give this an album that defined the 80s.
This album grooves. Great and banger after banger.
Great record
Geweldig!!
Doesn’t hold up quite as well as I remembered, but it’s still an all time classic. The B side would be perfect if it wasn’t for Baby I’m a Star. 4.6 rounded up.
4.5 roundup to 5
prepare to purify yourself in the waters of lake minnetonka
Wow. A classic album that everybody should listen to once in their life. I'd heard of Prince but I had never taken the time to listen to his discs. Loved most songs, especially (perhaps unsurprisingly) 'Purple Rain'.
Let's Go Crazy - It rocks
Has there ever been someone more musically gifted in Pop music than Prince? Highlights: Let's Go Crazy When Doves Cry Purple Rain
Let’s go Crazy - 8.5/10 Take me with U - 8/10 The Beautiful Ones - 8/10 Computer Blue - 7.5/10 Darling Nikki - 8/10 When Doves Cry - 9/10 I would die 4 U - 8/10 Baby I’m a Star - 8.5/10 Purple Rain - 10/10 TOTAL- 75.5/90
This is definitely the Prince album that I know best. Great music! Still holds up for me.
Prince said I'm going to make one of the most iconic pop records of all time and then spend the next 30 years making whatever I want and y'all will lap it up. A genius with a genius plan, executed perfectly.
It's Prince at his best. This album has not one, not two, but three of the best pop songs ever written (Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain), and the rest of the album definitely isn't filler! It's big, funky, tight, and transcendent. A legendary album for a legendary talent.
- It's perfect. It's a perfect album. I mean, there's no such thing as a "perfect" album, but Purple Rain's gotta be close, right? - I don't know how many times I've listened to this over the years, but it's still thrilling. A master pop visionary working at the absolute peak of his powers. - Let's Go Crazy might be the best opener of all time? It's in the top 5, at the very least.
first time listening have heard let’s go crazy when doves cry i would die 4 u purple rain
Its the sound of the 80s, and the epicness of it songs has meant its legacy is preserved. Its aged well.
this album is SO good 🫣🫣 my favorite songs are “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Darling Nikki,” “When Doves Cry,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and “Purple Rain.” that’s like. half of the tracklist 🫢🫢
fantastic
- Think I listened to this years ago but couldn't remember much about it - Far, far better than I was expecting, definitely can see why some people think it's one of the all-time greats - Title track is one of the best closers ever - All-round excellent album - Fav songs: Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Darling Nikki
5/5. A classic album that has some mid songs thrown in there. No doubting the significance and importance of purple rain, when doves cry, and let’s go crazy. Personal favorite is daring Nikki. There are some skippable songs though which keeps it from perfect but will bump it up to 5 cause prince is great.
It’s Purple Rain. It’s. Purple. Rain. You don’t review Purple Rain, you lay back and enjoy the ride.
I'll just go ahead and get this out of the way now. If it's not the best album on the list, it's my favorite album. Were I to rank all of these albums, Purple Rain would be my absolute number 1. To say there are no skips is an injustice to the album. Each song feels like it was a hit, or at least released as a single. Imagine owning this on vinyl, flipping to side 2 and getting When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star and Purple Rain thrown at you. Again, that's just side TWO! This album was released when I was all of 14 years old, growing up in small town Nebraska. My whole life was in front of me, and repeated listens at that age continue to impact me. A musical genius from Minnesota opened up the world for me in ways no one had previously. I don't listen to it just to relive my life as a weird 14 and 15 year old kid. I still listen to it because it still slaps, and slaps hard. And to realize it's still the best album, front to back, that I've ever had the privilege of hearing.
Magnificient
Great Album
Favorite: Let's Go Crazy Least Favorite: Baby I'm A Star Fantastic album. Not a bad song on the record. Iconic sound. First 5.
Fantastic. Prince in his prime. Possibly best soundtrack to a crappy move!??
Your account should get suspended if you give Purple Rain anything less than 5 stars.
A great album with so many bangers.Such a beautiful sound here with the electronic drums and synths along with Prince’s great guitar work and emotional vocals.Let’s go crazy, when doves cry,I would die for you and of course purple rain are immaculate songs that carry such passion that only prince could capture.
I slept on Prince for a long time, but this is one I actually own and love. Easily a 5 Star album
Fantastisch album
Maybe the greatest side 2 of any album ever.
No brainer
Classic
Sheer pop perfection. Nothing else to say (too much to say tbh).
This has been a favorite since I was a kid. It’s got a bit of everything. It’s pop, but not. Rock, but more. Dance, but something else. 80’s excess, but more sophisticated. Just great. 5/5
"this whole thing smacks of gender" -dril what a great album! i had heard a handful of songs from this album previously, but the whole thing is a masterpiece. i listened to it three times and like half the songs are grade-A bangers. cool 80s vibes and exciting tracks all around favorites: let's go crazy, darling nikki, when doves cry, i would die 4 u, purple rain
This would be my first album - my mom always used to make me listen to Prince to the point I hated it growing up. I started to appreciate it when I got older and can actually listen to it on my own. Every song feels pretty epic with so much going on. Liked Songs - Let's Go Crazy, The Beautiful Ones, Darling Nikki, Baby I'm a Star. 9/10
I’d never listened to the entire album before. Iconic and a great listen.
The best.
Hits and memorable supporting tracks, really like it!!!
Not a big 80 synth-pop guy, but this is near the pinnacle of the genre. Bangers sprinkled throughout and only a couple skips for me.
A true masterpiece. Up their with the all time great albums.
Genial
I can't believe this came out in 1984. This is Prince at his best. An utterly timeless album.
Yesssssssss! Oh thank you Bryan Christ, you heard my prayers begging for a kickass album to jumpstart my sad sad heart. And you delivered the baddest, most motherfucking funky sexy cool album possible. Oh thank you thank you thank you! I needed this one. Virtuoso masterpiece! Brilliant dazzling genius flows directly through this music! All-time greatest movie soundtrack! Artistry unchained, taking us to dizzying new heights of glory! All courtesy of the Purple One, the only modern deity I worship. Truly a gift.
Had to give it a second listen, but I just gotta give it a 5. Almost every song is really good, with pretty much 3 all-time classics.
"Purple Rain" is the sixth studio album by singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Prince. It was a soundtrack to a movie he starred in with the same name. The album was a move away from funk to more rock and pop and was denser with multi-layer of guitars, electronic synth effects and drum machines. It was his commercial peak selling over 25 million copies and staying at #1 on the US charts for 24 consecutive weeks. The album is widely considered one of the best albums of all time, was put in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry for its artistic significance in 2012. The organ, Prince introducing the afterword and the band kicking in start "Let's Go Crazy," two of the five album singles to reach #1. The synth melody. The shreading guitar ending...not the last shreading on this album. "Take Me With You" was written for Apollonia, the girl to get in the movie. It's a duet with Apollonia. Very catchy synth melody. Strings in the background. A great groove. The first side ends with "Darling Nikki," a song contributing to the start of "Parental Advisory" stickers. Come on...nothing wrong with singing about female maturation. It's slower and directed at Apollonia who decides to go with his movie enemy Morris Day. Grinding. The second half of this song is almost prog with the synths and guitar. The rock guitar intro with the beat begins his big one in "When Doves Cry." Outstanding intro. Then a keyboard melody with buzzing and a stark beat. No bass. Prince's seductive vocals. Prince's complex and emotional vocals highlight "I Would Die 4 U." The synth melody with electronic beat. And the album ends with the epic ballad "Purple Rain." The guitar open, drums, strings. It progresses slowly. Soulful backing vocals come in. The vocals are emotional. A lovely guitar solo in the middle and from then on the guitar takes away the melody. The song title is based on the America song "Ventura Highway." Purple being the color of blood in the sky. It's about the end of the world and being with the one you love and letting your faith guide you through. One of the 80's best. The album has hit song after hit song. The gorgeous melody with a mix of synths and guitar in the lead. It's rock, pop, dance and ballads. Legendary guitar solos. Emotional and compelling vocals. Yes, this still sounds great.
It’s Prince! Can’t imagine what listening to the first track on this was like when it was first released
Astounding, incredible, one of my all time favs
Tipper Gore reportedly created the PMRC because of this album and frankly I think it's a shame that she hates fun Favorite Tracks: When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Let's Go Crazy, I Would Die 4 U, Take Me With U 5/5
Highlights: When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 You, Let's Go Crazy Leave Em's: Darling Nikki, Computer Blue Overall Thoughts: I have tried this album in the past from front to back and couldn't get very engaged with it, however this time around listening with a critical ear I finally get it. First off, it is always exciting to recognize an artist and album that pops up, and even more exciting when said album is lauded as a top 50 album of all time. A lot of the music throughout feels like it embodies 80's pop and rock music and as a young person I can see the inspiration that this kind of music provides to artists like The Weeknd. Darling Nikki was the only song I could really do without but I still feel like there was a place for it on the album. The fact that he played the guitar on his own stuff is truly impressive and adds to the impression Purple Rain provides. The smash hits are so good and in my opinion they somewhat carry the rest of the album in listenability. I'm now planning to go watch the movie; which along with making good music was probably the point of the album right? I guess that would make this album a success... Score Breakdown: 4.189 & 5 -> 4.595
The Prince of pop rides! Great album. Not necessarily my thing, but what a bop
Love, love, love 💜
Purple Rain, some stay dry and others feel the pain. It has it all - Great 80's production, electric guitar, and Prince screaming. Favorite song is When Doves Cry!
A great mix of pop and rock on an album full of hits. Love the mixture of futuristic synths mixed with amazing guitar riffs and solos. The record has a lot of great experimental aspects too.
The Paisley Park prophet produces a king-making masterpiece. Every song sounds both old and new, anthemic and personal. The energy is off the charts from the start, peaking on “I Would Die 4 U,” and cooling off with the title track closer. An essential for anyone who likes music.
Absolutely unparalleled, and not even Prince's best album.
Concentrated perfection
Just a truly epic album. And he knew it the entire time he was writing it. Favorite track: When Doves Cry
Absolutely love this album. Own on vinyl. 5/5
I went into this album thinking that i wouldn't like it but wow... I was surprised to say the least. It really is one of the greatest pop albums of the 80s. With every track I can hear the influence it made on even today's music. Can't give anything less than a 5.
2 many hits 4 me to not give this a 5. The guy rips on guitar and composed some extremely solid tracks that have birthed so many spin-offs and likely shaped pop into what it is today. It blends rock, soul, and pop together seamlessly, and when you add a finisher like that, you have s truly remarkable album.
sexo
The guy's a damn genius.
PRINCE
Classic
Feels crazily over the top, but also feels paired back... didn't get on with let's go crazy but next song onwards is deep, engaging music which tells a story. what a great album. 5
Iconic. A must-own. Turn it up to “11” and listen from start to finish. Every time.
This is an amazing album and by no means do I have the knowledge to understand all the great musical qualities this album possesses. I know that prince is a legend and that he makes anything cool. This is my favorite album of his as it has great rocking guitar riffs and flows perfectly with synths and pop sounds that nobody else could combine besides maybe Michael Jackson. Prince did it all though and that’s why he’s a legend. This album is one of the best ever and I enjoy listening to it from time to time. 8.9/10
Lovely classic album. Now I know why Prince is well loved outside of purple rain
Excellent Album
Obviously 5/5
Perfect
Purple Rain is the perfect representation of eighties culture: ambitious, over-the top, and filled to the brim with just about everything imaginable. The drum beats are thundering, the guitar solos are screeching and long, and there's enough moaning and falsetto to make Barry Gibb jealous. "Let's Go Crazy" kicks off with a spoken word intro that any other artist would have sounded silly reciting, but Prince's serious commitment to the fun pays off. The remainder of the album is filled with other raw emotions as well: the lusty "When Doves Cry" pushes the envelope with its sexual imagery, while "Darling Nikki" pushes it with raw lyrics of nymphomania. The album has great instrumentation too: "I Would Die 4 U" has some of my favorite use of synthesizer in all of music, and the keyboards on "Computer Blue" and "Baby I'm a Star" are perfection as well. And to top it all off, the album ends with its nearly nine minute long, self-titled masterpiece. Every time I hear "Purple Rain," I always picture Prince stroking his guitar like a phallus during the halftime show at Super Bowl XLI, ending what is arguably the best halftime show since Michael Jackson rocked the Rose Bowl. In the end, everything on this album is massive, but anything less than that would have been a misfire. This is easily one of the best albums of the eighties, if not all time.
Classic
Dude is the best
Oh this bangs. Hello he likes to yell like a headless chicken. camp i get why when doves cry made the 1984 girlies crazy the use of reversed audio lyrics is interesting this slapped. i appreciate the 4 minutes of instrumental to finish the album off. really feels like a fully realized experience.
5/5
Oh fuck! Let's go crazy!
There are records that you just have to listen to in awe of the talent and artistry that was necessary to create it. In this case, the disbelief was accompanied by a lot of dancing in my seat and occasionally saying out loud "What the fuck, this is really good." So many Prince classics in one package, and even the deeper cuts are all deliciously funky. This album is magic. Standout tracks are When Doves Cry and Darling Nikki.
Purple Rain is everything you want an album to be. No notes.
Genius.
favs - lets go crazy when doves cry (iconic) Darling Nikki
Prince's songwriting skills, virtuoso abilities, and enigmatic aura possibly make him the single coolest & most enigmatic musicians to ever live. It's a bit strange that his best (& almost a 9-track greatest hits) album inspired and then became the soundtrack for a the eponymous film, but I think part of what made this his most well-known record, is how well it exemplifies his signature sound and ability to write songs that cover a variety of topics & emotional range. He nails relationship tumult in 'When Doves Cry', has fun in the frenetic partying anthem 'Let's Go Crazy' (my fav of his), and recounts freaky-deaky sex-capades in 'Darling Nikki'...before wrapping it up perfectly with the power-ballad Purple Rain (...originally written as a country music duet w/ Stevie Nicks, who allegedly was too intimidated to help him finish composing and record...his mega-star talent apparently too much for her). Despite his & this record's tremendous success, other artists didn't/couldn't even try to replicate his one-of-a-kind sound (vocal & instrumental) or style, both of which are on full display here. Similar to maybe a handful of other music phenoms (ex: Eddie Van Halen on guitar or Ringo Starr on drums...but with songwriting abilities few musicians could equal), his originality/talent were truly unique & continue to echo around the world. Giving this 5 BIG stars. R.I.P. Prince Rogers Nelson
Oh Prince. Grateful to have seen this legend live. I just gave "sign of the times" a rounded up 5 but this is a stronger album. full glory and exultant blissful prince. even more unhinged and over the top as a performer LIVE, his flourishes were even less restrained on stage. true musical, lyrical artistic and original inventive genius. he wasn't copying anyone.
In 2023 it's almost hard to believe that something as interesting, experimental, catchy and rockin' as this used to be charting pop music. It wouldn't get a look in today, sadly. But it's an absolutely fantastic album. It's fun as hell, great to listen to and it just oozes cool. 5/5.
Ace album
I love every minute of this album, ever since I first heard it 35 years ago or however long ago it was. I cannot say one bad thing about early Prince, his later stuff? I have some feelings about but Purple Rain is perfection from beginning to end.
Pop masterpiece. Love that it never floats into any of the tacky aspects of the 80s. His shredding gives it such a perfect edge (not mention some of the raunchy subject matter).
Prince
One of the best
I want to say something pithy about my love for this album but I keep returning to my pre-teen cousin and me sharing a Walkman headset during summer vacation and giggling at Darling Nikki over and over. And that’s what got Tipper Gore’s stickers all over everything! For that, and for the staccato bass-less groove of When Doves Cry, and the Arsenio Hall performance of Let’s Go Crazy that I saw once and been Jonesing for ever since and Wendy and Lisa and Apollonia and Dr Fink, I have one thing to say: Thank U
This was bookended with two absolutely unreal tracks. The guitar to close out Let’s Go Crazy was fantastic. The Beautiful Ones Opened Slow and built up to the shrieking vocals which was awesome. It had a good amount of weirdness throughout to keep things interesting, Darling Nikki in particular. This was fantastic, 5 stars
Spellbinding. Could be a greatest hits album. In many ways, Purple Rain is the perfect encapsulation of Prince’s vision and artistry - maximalist production, big sound, funk and pop and rock influences, incredible vocal and guitar solos and presented in eye catching imagery. An extraordinary accomplishment.
This is a perfect album.
one of Price's masterpieces. Not The one (I'm still under Controversy's spell) but close, very close. it's sexy and sleazy, it's musically complex but catchy, it's deep but fun also. Prince truly broke all musical barriers here, demolished all stereotypes and create a truly unforgettable piece of musical history. Best song: Purple rain
Legendary, enough said
I didn't need to listen again to know this is 5 stars, though I did. Three times. Prince is a genius but his albums are a mixed bag as his prolific creativity was not always put into a filter. This, however, is a definite moment when it all worked. Not a single weak song on an imperious album. When Doves Cry without a bass is still spine tingly good. The title track, recorded live, is an epic ending by a band of supremely talented musicians. A perfect album.
Amazing, great album
This album was influential at the ages of 19-20, just as I got my driving licence. Still as influential to me today (25) as it was 5-6 years ago.
Legendarisk, innovativt, lidt rocket, catchy, bare godt
10/10
Let's Go Crazy- 7 Take Me With U- 7 The Beautiful Ones- 9 Computer Blue- 8 Darling Nikki- 9 When Doves Cry-10 I Would Die 4 U-10 Baby I'm a Star- 10 Purple Rain- 10
I am not a fan of Prince overall, but this album is just fantastic. It's still an album I regularly listen to when I have to drive around town on a nice day.
one of the goats
zajebiste!!! zwłaszcza when the doves cry
goat
It's Prince. Purple Rain is awesome.
I mean. What is there to say about one of the greatest cinematic soundtracks of all time? Sexy, sultry and just too cool. Prince compiles a wonderful collection of tunes here. An obvious recommendation.
easy
The thing I love about this album is that, like the best movies, it's a world you're just plunged into. Prince doesn't care if you know nothing about it and don't understand the rules, he just gets on with it. It's playful and silly, an utterly charismatic blend of genres. I think I finally get Prince.
listened on the plane from melbourne. One of my fav albums of all time, goated prince as usual. trio of holy songs are darling nikki when doves cry and of course purple rain. hon mention beautiful ones
I don't have to listen to this album to know it's a five star album. This is a great soundtrack to a great musicians movie.
From the first sound of the organ/synth to the last note of Purple Rain, it was a wonderful journey!
What a brilliant freaking album. Iconic pop from the '80s but wholly unconventional. Fantastic blend of guitar and synths. Great mix of male and female contributors. Every song is interesting. Portrait of a profoundly gifted musician at an artistic apex, fearless, free, just overflowing with talent and songcraft and studiocraft and it all comes to a fine point on this album. And while this is really the first time the Revolution gets in into the mix, Prince orchestrates every note — and it's all for the good. It's almost cliché to love this album, but that doesn't make it any less amazing. I always appreciated the flow of this album, from the party-time opener to the strange drum-driven intro of "Take Me With U" to the "Beautiful Ones," which is a beautiful track, to the odd "Computer Blue" that goes on its own unpredictable journey. I really enjoyed "Darling Nikki" on this listen, more than I expected, and it struck me that "When Doves Cry" must be among the songs I've heard most in my life — like all-time number of times I've heard that song — and damned if I wasn't keying in on things for the first time. There's a guitar line that's moving underneath, and I love the extended version (as opposed to the single version). And somehow, "Purple Rain" might be my least favorite song ("Baby I'm A Star" was always one of my faves) in this mix, and yet it's like the best song ever when Prince played it at the Super Bowl. (Treat yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WYYlRArn3g) Damn, I miss Prince.
Amazing how your life can change in just 43 min and 59 sec. This album changed a lot of things in high school. Me and my friends loved it but everyone did in my terribly trashy and racist school. When Let's Go Crazy hit at a basketball game or dance, we ALL got down. Peace through superior groove all thanks to the first rock star who stirred many a pulsing drive in my body that I hadn't felt before. (a'hem...well we can't talk Purple Rain without a nod to his sex factor!) Woah...I just learned today that the gibberish at the end of Darling Nikki was backwards! Those guitar notes at the beginning of When Doves Cry! I think this song, track 6, is my favorite on the album and all-time Prince fav. I got to see him on this tour at the Spectrum in Philadelphia November 1984. Sidenote: you can look up concert tours in Wikipedia and it provides revenue numbers. 3 days in Philly = $848,075, which is about $2,433,975 today. Ending the album with Purple Rain...those violins, the drums, him singing in my ear. This listen brought me to tears. Friends - I left the group chat yesterday because I was too deep in my listening groove. I still love you (even if Scott mistakenly rates this wrong).
Like Bowie, Prince is one of those artists who I can’t imagine being unimpressed with at any point of time. The way he brings so many styles of music together- pop, rock, R&B, new wave, doo wop, even touches of metal and country- as seamlessly and synthetic as possible makes sure this album never stops vibing. And when you think you know what’s coming next, he comes up with a hook that blows you away. The movie is mid though. There are very few albums that I think deserve an A+. This is one of them.
Brilliant!
All killer, no filler. Prince at his funky best.
Yes 5/5
Perfect album. 10/10 no notes. RIP
This album review process is an interesting experience. Listening to this gave me pause as the only Prince records I own are singles: Raspberry Beret (perfection), a 12 inch of Cream and Sexy M-Fucker (which I bought in Melbourne airport while bored..). And yet...I once owned not one but three Supertramp albums, go figure. And so, after that tedious self reflection, what's that all mean for Purple Rain? In 1984 I think I was too busy thinking about Green on Red/Guadacanal Diary et al to get into Prince. Despite the ubiquity of the smash hits emerging from this record I was too cool for the schooling that is the genius of Prince. Jesus/Krishna/Allah what a record, the Wendy and Lisa harmonies give all these tunes that vocal edge, and respect to Apollonia as well. Doves/Let's Go/I Would Die are bona fide classics, providing the template for so much of what has emerged since. Take Me With U is superb, the kick on the snare, the strings, the harmonies, perfect for hurtling down the south coast with the windows down. Alright there's a couple of fillers in there but so what, this is what pop music is all about.
After the great 1999 album, the release of each new Prince LP was keenly awaited. This was the follow-up and it didn’t disappoint. The sheer pomp of When Doves Cry & Purple Rain & the rock & roll chops of Let’s Go Crazy was more than enough, but the other 2 singles gleaned from this, Take Me With U & I Would Die 4 U, were also classics. There was something a little embarrassing about the movie clips that were used for some of these, but, really, he could do no wrong at the time. This is the album that made him the icon that we still sorely miss.
At first, I didn’t get Prince. I was aware of the singles from this album when they were released, but I didn’t have the album, and I didn’t really understand what the fuss was. A schoolmate, Bassel, was a fan and constantly tried to convince me of Prince’s genius, but it took a while. Sorry Bassel, I got there eventually. Then, in about 1988, the penny finally dropped and I got it. Over the next couple of years, I obsessively hunted down the whole Prince back catalogue. I played his music constantly, and I still do. I saw him at the Sydney Entertainment Centre in 1992, and he tore it up live. And, except for the album he had just released at the time, this was the only album from which he played more than one song; Baby I’m A Star, Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain. Prince’s imperial phase of the 1980s is far and away my favourite, and this album is a monumental achievement from this period. Prince is one of only three artists to have the number one single, album and movie simultaneously. Even the movie is pretty rubbish, Prince conquered the world with this album. It’s rock, it’s funk, it’s psychedelic, it’s pop, it’s experimental, it’s a party jam, it’s heavily emotional. It’s everything about the 80s, and also classic beyond time. It’s the first album where the Revolution really brought their influences and played (about half the album) as a band, instead of Prince doing everything himself in the studio (although there are still a few tracks like that). And the band certainly was cooking. I want to shout out the particular contributions of Wendy and Lisa to this record. Their playing, singing and arrangements really lift a lot of this material into something special. You can hear the way their arrangements push Prince’s harmony into some new spaces, which can particularly heard in the string. Big fan of their work. I think you can hear how quickly this album was recorded, and it is a bit rough around the edges, which adds to the appeal. The songs are so iconic now that weird choices (no bassline in When Doves Cry is the classic example) are now like articles of faith. This reminds me of many of the later Beatles records, where off-the-cuff choices have now become entrenched lore, and people have built whole careers on their mistakes and arbitrary additions. I am listening to the deluxe version, which has a lot of super extended versions and other songs recorded contemporaneously. Many of those previously unreleased versions would have been lead singles for other artists (and in some cases were, I’m looking at you Andre Cymone). It is hard to credit how prolific he wa during this period. Is this my favourite Prince album? No, not quite. But is it a towering achievement of popular music? Absolutely. Five stars.
I mean this like a top 10 album of all time. Timeless
6 stars
So many great tracks, and I was dancing in my seat the entire time. Perfection.
It doesn't get much better than Purple Rain. This album has floated in and out of my top 20 of all time since its release. This was a nice excuse to crank it up.
Just a really great album.
Classic guitar
Great album!
This is an album that deserves to be played at full volume. It has great get up and go feeling to start the new week. I was familiar with Purple Rain inside out before seeing the film. Put them both together and my hormone racing mind as 14 year old was blown away. There's such a powerful band feel with Wendy and Lisa both having strong contributions. The Beautiful Ones is... beautiful. Darling Nikki is FILTH. Baby I'm a Star is pure funk. You don't even need the Purple Rain album closer to make this the perfect album. It's already achieved this before the iconic chords of the opening track are played. I love every second of this album - and I mean every second. There's not a single moment where I have my doubts. What a fella. Much missed.
Loved this album, Prince is a classic. I like the way the songs switch up between fast uptempo songs and more ballads. 5/5, opening and closing track are my favorites.
If'n u think this is anything less than five stars u are sadly kidding yrself
So good
Stone Cold Classic - introduced me, as an innocent british teen, to all kinds of exotic things. One or two of these songs would make my all time top ten
Solid songs even beyond the charted hits. Need to go back into his discography more.
Legendary
Classic album, so many great tracks. Never fails to put me in a good mood
So fun! Made me want to dance the Mambo in Havana in the 20s. Even though it’s not my normal style of music, I enjoyed every song and would definitely listen again or even put this on during a dinner party.
This has always been a great album. Prince is genius!
Well this one takes me back. Be interesting to listen to it now vs on release as a 11 year old... Fantastic, great time in music history, the synthpop and protorap combined with the guitar work. Just wow. Great.
Many genres with a central theme to a beautifully crafted body of work. There’s is something for everyone in this album and I love it
Yes
Excellent album
I've probably been a little too harsh for my review of the purple dwarf's *1999* (and my grade, 3/5, was harsh too). It was a fun rant, so I have no regrets. But still... So to get the karmic balance about Prince right, and given that I don't have anything original or interesting to add about this classic record from the eighties, I'm just gonna add one point to my initial estimation of *Purple Rain* (which was around 4 to 4.5) and therefore make its cover appear on my personal gallery of all-time stunners when you click on my profile. Those covers are starting to look good now, even if there are so many other personal favorites of mine I want to add to them right now. I also have to admit that it's fun to go from hall of fame to hall of shame, and smirk at the lowest-graded numbers. There too, I badly want to add a few stinkers to the list. I know some of them are coming up--not from Prince, though, even if his later stuff dangerously added that extra layer of cheese no one needed in the first place. But, hey, I know there's even worse than Prince's later carreer when it comes to ridiculous stuff--I've checked Dimery's list, and it's there, hiding among the gems. It'll be great singling those horrors out too. What a fun app, really. Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 829 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory: 94 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 42 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 36
Purple reign.
i am something that you'll never comprehend
All Prince songs exist somewhere within a classic, three-circle Venn diagram. One circle is "brilliant musicianship", one is "sheer egotism", and the last is "utterly insane". The best songs fall into that beautiful center overlap. "Purple Rain" has SO MANY songs in the dead center of the diagram ("Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry", "Purple Rain") that it demands a 5-star review.
The king of funk decided to write the most blistering rock song of all time. That opens a stunning album. I prefer the purple one's funk which is why Die 4 U is probably my favourite track. But the album just a sublime over the top piece of glorious madness.
Pffft. 5 stars. There are few perfect albums and this is one of them. All killer, zero filler. Most of it shouldn't even work but it does. Like, this opening with the organ and the eulogy? This could've crashed and burned. But it's fucking great. I like a lot of Prince's stuff, but he never got back to this. I bet this album benefitted from him writing, like, 200 songs and then paring it down to 9; that was his beef with WB, wasn't it? That they wouldn't let him release multiple albums a year? Anyway, I think curation helped this one a lot. I kinda wish he'd taken every three albums after this and pared those songs down to one album. Imagine. Extra points to Prince for making me believe, when I was 10, that somehow when I grew up, adult life would be something like what is on this album and its cover. Oh but here is some bullshit - on the 'normal' album on Apple Music, the end of I Would Die 4 U doesn't lead directly into Baby I'm a Star. Like, it just stops the party at the end of Die 4 U. I will take one star away from Apple Music for this and give Purple Rain 6 stars.
I'm with Craig on this one. There is only one song here that I'm lukewarm about ("Computer Blue") and even that one gets a pass because it seems like it should have been on the soundtrack for WEIRD SCIENCE. Everything else? I mean... there's five singles here. Five. And it's only a 9 song album! And you know damn well "Darling Nikki" would've been a single, too, if it wouldn't have likely been censored for that bit about masturbating! This is about as close to perfect as a pop-leaning record is going to get in my book. I think it's also the only album on this list so far that I own on vinyl, which was nice for a change. This was a pretty good week for the list!
Funky! Never listened to this all the way through before but I see why it's a classic album. Instrumentally top tier work. When doves cry is a JAM. Cranked up the volume on the solo in purple rain and loved it, excellent end to a great album
Again a super-classic. Prince released from 1978-1992 an album every year except from 1983. But given the high quality of the b-sides, he could have released a 5 star album in 1983 as well. (Out of all the Prince albums from that period, Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O the Times are obviously 5 star. Lovesexy, Parade or Around the World are say 4.5 star so 5 star should these be on the list... )
parel
Timeless masterpiece
I love Prince, but I'm actually wavering on 4 or 5 stars for this album, which seems crazy. It's got some of his most recognisable hits and the titular epic closer, it's just that some of the lesser known tracks don't really have the same pizazz. 4.5/5... fuck it, it's Prince. Have the 5 stars!!
4.5/5. Great stuff, not much more to say
What an album! Packed with bangers, opening with one of my favourite Prince tunes - Lets go Crazy - and racing through with high energy, none of when he sometimes sneaks towards cringe... which lets him get away with the finale. Loved it.
Sigh. That’s how you open and close an album. Still a killer soundtrack after all these years.
Absolutely an amazing album. This deserves way more than five stars. If I could give more stars I would. All of the songs are fantastic and none of lack in any way. If this list had more Prince music, it would actually be legitimate.
Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to give this five stars. The last three days I've had Prince, Sabbath and the Talking Heads. We really are into the greatest of all time now! This is another one that would get in on the strength of two or three all time classics (Crazy, Doves, title track) so there really is no need for the rest to be so good too! It's not even my favourite Prince album - though I suspect that Around the World in a Day and Sign O The Times are coming too...
There’s always a back beat that keeps even the ballads driving you forward. His music is timeless and has elements of music from decades that proceeded him. Whether you like him or not, He’s pure genius when it comes to composition. The iconic beginning to “When Doves Cry” and “Purple Rain;” when you can hear two chords and know the song, that’s talent. His whole album follows in that vein. one-of-a-kind mastery.
Admitedly, Purple Rain is not a perfect album, but Prince's effortless blending of funk, blues, rock, and very poppy pop produces great results. 4.75
People often tell me I look like a young Prince when he was in his purple pomp. My chosen colour is brown though, because it's the colour of shit. I'm really into scat porn at the moment. People shitting on things, people shitting on eachother, people eating shit. It all gives me a raging stiffy. Here, Prince shits out a record that tastes delicious.
Purple adjacent people in order of preference: 1. Purple Aki 2. Prince 3. Paul Manning 4. Tinky Winky 5. Barney
Great album if not perfect.
Five stars immediately. One of my favorite albums of all time.
I love this album. The man was a genius.
This album is like Prince's Pants: Tight, Sexy, and Jam-Packed with content.
Prince is one of my favorites!
10/10. Has a couple of my favorite Prince songs on it, and while a couple songs are only meh, I still enjoy it all the way through.
Fantastic. 10/10
Absolutely amazing. Great album.
If not Prince's best album (which I think it is) it is his most accessible.
This album has universal appeal. Most people have heard at least one of the tracks. Great entry album for new Prince fans. Low 5, for rollercoaster of themes best listened to alone.
Prince was a genius, I acknowledge that. When he was on, he was on and Purple Rain is the best example of his work. 5/5.
Dude was so talented. Such a prolific song writer.
An absolute banger of an album, there isn’t a bad track on here which easily makes it a 5 out of 5. From the freneticness of I would die for you through two the mellow vibes in the beautiful ones for me this was Prince at his absolute best
It’s easy – and helpful – to forget that this is the soundtrack to one* of the worst films of the 1980s. I mean, I really worked on liking this film. Really worked. But after a fourth watch, I pretty much lost the will to live. (I was, in a dumb 12 year old kind of way, quite shocked to discover that it is actually ok to like the album but hate the film. Sort of like loving the sinner but hating the sin.) *‘Purple Rain’, believe it or not, is not even the worst film Prince made in the 80s.
Yaasssss! I have listened to this album too many times to count. Solid fucking 5! Anyone that disagrees is an idiot
gg
This man fucked. Best Tracks: Let's Go Crazy; When Doves Cry' Purple Rain
JA!
Prince in topvorm! Geweldige plaat.
Iconic album. Has to be in the top ten.
Purple genius.
One of the most under rated guitarists. Visionary album
I mean, Prince is a music legend who also turned his name into a symbol
The G.O.A.T. with one of my all time favorite albums. I could ramble on for hours about this one, and nobody wants that, so I'll just say 5 stars and leave it at that.
Driving, sexual, anthemic. This album is obviously in the upper echelons of popular music. Prince was a musical chameleon and this album reflects his best. His musicianship is understated despite the fact that his guitar playing is some of the best. He always did what was best for the song at hand.
Absolute masterpiece. Wanted to give 4.5 stars but Purple Rain is so 5 stars its ridiculous
Fun and cool in a way that only adds to the explicit sexiness, great
I remeber being kid in the video store and seeing the wall sized poster for this album/movie. I had no real idea of who Prince was and my parents seemed pretty eager to keep it that way, but I remeber being frozen in awe of just how damned cool Prince must be. So, the elephant in the room - Darling Nikki. What a singularly fascinating song. I'm sure the sexual subject matter and the outro with lyric played in reverse is a big part of why this whole album was the focus of so much conservative and censorship ire. It's probably also part of the reason why my parents weren't stoked to see me gawking at the poster, all those years back. If you can look past that though, it is a relentlessly catchy track, merging funk, rock and healthy portion of musical theater. Outside of that one salacious track, the rest of the album is focused on common funk and R&B lyrical themes. The arrangements, the live band vibe, Prince's vocal diversity and improvisation all come together with fluid perfection. Nearly every track is a stand alone hit, and played back to back they sound cohesive and congruent. An all out great album!
This album was in my house soon after it’s release (an LP purchased by my sister I believe), I’ve listened to it I’m sure a hundred times, and very happily listened to it again as it came up on this list. I think it’s a true masterpiece, blending psychedelic funk, R&B and Soul, pop and rock With a seamless precision not seen before or since. Prince’s vocals are as good as anything James Brown did, as good as anything by Michael Jackson - and he’s a virtuoso guitarist to boot. This one will survive the ages
No surprise this was great! Knew most of the songs but didn’t realize how fast it would go. Wanted to listen to it again immediately
I mean it's incredible, genius album 5 stars, no notes, a killer start to finish. 1 Favorite: When doves cry.
This album has got the bangers on it
Wow, simply wow. His virtuoso playing and singing, mixed with his writing and sense of performing, all create an album that throughout is completely unique and authentic, blending all the sounds and genres from the 80s. A great run time as well with on point production. The entire vine felt like a concert with that legendary outro to Purple Rain the song to conclude it. Prince is probably the greatest musician in 20th century popular music. What can he not do?
Really liked the combination of catchy pop sounds paired with the extravaganza of Prince's rock and funk
It's fucking Purple Rain by Prince like what else do you want me to say
Brilliant
Really? Purple Rain. One of my favorite albums of all time. 5 stars, next.
A classic, no doubt.
5/5. Every song is great. Loved this album since it came out.
5/5. Classic
This album is prime Prince for me. He may have gone deeper lyrically on later albums, and certainly broke as much (or more) new ground sonically elsewhere, but PURPLE RAIN is nothing if not pure Pop/R&B genius. There were a lot of great movie soundtracks in the 80s (Footloose, Top Gun, The Big Chill, to name a few) but PURPLE RAIN was more than just movie music - it was THE soundtrack of my high school years. Every night building our homecoming float in Myers' barn, we blasted that album (hoping the chaperones weren't listening too closely when Darling Nicky came on!). Our pompon teams' signature routine was to I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star. At least a couple of weekend nights were spent catching the film at Bella Vista Cinemas. And I remember wishing the title track would never end as I sweatily clung to the cute girl I had a crush on, sharing the last song of a school dance. Prince of course had many other great albums & songs, but when I think of him, I always think first of this album. Listening to it brings up a huge wave of nostalgia, this time manifesting in a big purple rain cloud.
Purple Rain is one of the best Prince albums and the soundtrack of the film with the same name. The film is forgettable, the album is not. It contains of course the magnificent ballad "Purple Rain", but also classics like "Let's Go Crazy", "Darling Nikki", "I Would Die 4 U" and "Computer Blue". A perfect example of all the things that make Prince a legendary artist.
It was pretty good, but everything sounded the same after a while.
Legendary. Sent me down the rabbit hole of watching live performances. His Super Bowl halftime show may never be topped. Best track: Purple Rain
A fantastic album. One of my favourites.
A classic
Such an influential album
🦹🏼♀️Loved the artist and all his quirkiness. Tiny man with huge talent. I’d put him up there as one of the best writer, performer and guitarist out there. I know he is in a band with Freddie Mercury right now fighting over who gets to wear the tightest, brightest, studded out fit. Rock on gentleman. Easier to list which songs I didn’t like-none.
Epic album. So many upbeat good groove bangers before possibly the greatest closing track ever. The more I hear this album the more I love it.
Timelessly good. Prince in his prime was truly a poet. This album is a masterwork.
One of his best. From open to close not a bad track on the album.
I forgot how great this is!
Let’s go crazy, When doves cry, Purple rain.
A blast from start to finish. Get me hyped up just to cry when doves fly.
Great album, great guitar work and an insight into genius.
The man and master. Prince is a marvel of modern music. We lost him too young. This is his masterpiece. This is one of the most obvious 5/5 in this list it's not even a question.
Super chill album
I now get Prince after listening to this album
One of my favorites
Groundbreaking record. Just pure musical genius.
Classic
One of the best in one of his best moments. Amazing record. 💜
Dearly beloved...Let's go crazy listening to this album!
I swear I've heard every single song from this album covered by at least one other artist, I like these versions better
Damn HBO Max for removing the film after adding it only 3 months ago. This album is best experienced through the film. Despite this, Prince combines pop, rock, R&B, electronic, and dance and experiments with every known instrument and sound the human mouth can make, and you've got to appreciate how much each track differs must each other while still being glued together by Prince's voice, personality, and themes. There is a balance found in every song. There's never too much vocals or too much instrumental. Everything mixes so well, and despite all but one song go 4 minutes or longer, there's always something new and exciting to enhance the experience. Despite its popularity, I'm actually not too big of a fan of the opener "Let's go crazy", but I admit it's a great way to excite the audience for what's to come. I like the experimental sound and storytelling of "Darling Nikki," which as we all led to the creation of the Parental Advisory label (just for referencing masturbation). "When Doves Cry" is without a doubt my favorite Prince song, and quite possibly a candidate for one of my favorite pop songs of all time. Thank god for it being 6 minutes. I'm a sucker for New Wave, so "I would die 4 U" really resonates with my pop soul. Finally, "Purple Rain" smacks us with heartbreaking lyrics in the first half while the other half is a masterpiece in music composition, extending the story without a single word.
Tremendous. Triumphant. Transcendent. Fourth Tr word. I’ve never listened to this full album as the artist intended it. I have now remedied that frankly unconscionable failing. This is the sort of thing I signed up for with this challenge.
Prince is a legend, and this album is legendary. A personal fav.
Prince is awesome
-Just a bunch of great songs -I liked "Let's Go Crazy," "The Beautiful Ones," and "When Doves Fly"
Excellent album some iconic songs and a joy to listen to prince is a genius
Sublime.
Prince's magnum opus
a good first song - better than eurovision!
One of my favorite albums of all time.
The day before his deathiversary too, what timing. I miss albums that were more varied and dynamic like this.
YES, THIS!! I've only come to appreciate Prince in the last few years, really. This album is a fav though. The tracks are all so varied, but so funky. Love it.
This is a classssssssssic album. Top 50 all-time across all genres
Classic! Not much else to say.
Well...
15th June 2021 Listened on the living room speaker with jen during the afternoon after hanging my notice at GCF. It's Prince. It's purple rain. One of the best ever.
GOATED
Take me with you... Where do we go, moment to moment? If thoughts were physical locations, the brain, a teleporter. What did we leave to be born? Is the uterus a revolving door between dimensions? Emerging, we are tiny astronauts out on a space walk, tethered to the mothership. Mama Placenta I am air, antibodies, food, and blood -- I was once your entire world. the entire earth in my belly. When it is time for you to leave, pack that picnic basket of essentials: shortbread cookies, potted meat, and celery sticks. Take me with you, but be sure to leave all of our disappointments behind.
I mean, come on it's Purple Rain.
I've never really listened to Prince but this is bloody brilliant
What, are you kidding?
5 stars, a perfect album
It's Prince babeh
Great album. 5/5
Classic!
Perfect beginning to end. Amazing that the last song was from a live show
Classic 80's album. Some excellent so gwriting with great melodies and arrangements, very much enjoyed.
Solid 5
5.0 + One of my top 10 of all time.

Obv
Guay. Un 5.
Yes! Not a bad track on the album. The Beautiful Ones is one of my favorites.
Excellent album. Bunch of known songs. 10/10
Masterpiece. Prince at his greatest. Extended version of Purple Rain with the guitar solo 👏🏻👏🏻
best concert i have ever seen. listened to this twice.
No question this gets a 5. It's Prince. It's one of the more formative albums of my childhood. Purple Rain was the closing song of every dance in middle school and high school. It's a classic, he's a genius and it deserves all of the stars.
All-time classic. All tracks are fire, and "Purple Rain" is my least favorite--saying something.
More musically interesting than most grunge.
Absolutely loved this album, a real rock classic. I like the way the whole album is great and upbeat. This was also the first time listening to the Purple Rain song in the 9 minute variant. All I can say is… wow!
Maybe I’m biased because of New Girl but this album was amazi by. Lots of special hits on it and although it was thoroughly 80’s, something about a few of the songs were truly timeless. Best of his niche/sub genre. 4.5/5
Really?
A masterpiece that I have never listened to straight through.
I love you Linn! I can’t believe how good this album still is.
I mean. It has all the bonkers fun stuff of prince just having a blast. Bop after bop.
Fantastic album with great song endings
One of the best ever!
Such a great album!
Episk
That super bowl performance tho
i like the crazy. Could've singed about more diverse subjects tho
Excellent album! Never listened to the full record. 4/5
Some great hits
I'm pretty neutral towards this era and style of music, but the song Purple Rain is an instant +1. A good 4.
a couple of the bad songs are extremely bad, bringing this down to a 4
Some great music here, but not the whole album.
First impression: was not impressed with the first half of the album, but the second we reached when doves cry, that track and everything after was a banger. Favourite track: When doves cry One sentence: provocative, fun, a fusion between 80s pop and rock with a splash of funk. Will I revisit? Only the second half of the album yes.
THIS IS WHAT IS SOUNDS LIKE WHEN THE DOVES CRY
