Reviews (page 7 of 14)

What an album, such a bop. I think I prefer the second half but it’s a hard test cause they’re all so good. Not much more to say really its Prince

While the hype around Prince is often greater than the reality, looking back at this record reminds you that he was a gifted songwriter and talented musician who had arrived at a distinct pop sound of his own. This record in my mind represented the peak of his craft with obviously strong writing - Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain still regarded as Classics. I Would Die 4 U, while not a Classic still is a single worth revisiting. Some of this comes off as dated production wise, particularly Let’s Go Crazy. However, at the time, this album was inescapable as it was all over radio and TV. There are a couple of missteps, specifically Computer Blue and The Beautiful Ones, but these are minor nits. 4/5

In the summer of 1984 I was WBC videographer, which meant that every weekday night, I visited a local youth club with a 26”Tv and VHS player. The kids/ youth clubs would get a VHS film from the local shop and I would play the film for them… In about 25 youth clubs, from summer to Xmas, every weeknight, it was Purple Rain, twice a night…. It must be a sign of the times, and quality of the music, that I remain (relatively) sane.

He princed it good

"Purple Rain" represents the end of the world and being with the one you love while letting faith guide you through difficult times. Purple combines blue (sadness) and red (passion or blood), and the "rain" symbolizes a cleansing or transformative event. Favorite songs: - When Doves Cry - Purple Rain

As a Minnesotan, it’s a sacrilege that in not a huge Prince fan. This album is about as good as Prince gets for me. Quite a few winners.

Lets Go Crazy - 8/10 Take Me With U - 6/10 The Beautiful Ones - 7/10 Computer Blue - 5/10 Darling Nikki - 6/10 When Doves Cry - /810 I Would Die 4 U - 7/10 Baby I'm A Star - 8/10 Purple Rain - 8/10

FINALLY, I’ve been waiting for the generator to give me this one. It’s an excuse to listen to a Prince album. I listened to this on my morning walk, which I feel like wasn’t the best time to do so; it was way too sunny out, and this album is definitely more melancholic. I steered away from him because !. He’s homophobic 2. I feel like a poser when I like extremely mainstream musicians and 3. His extensive discography. But this was great! “Let’s Go Crazy” is the perfect album opener, leading into the vicious “Take Me with U” that keeps spirits high and the energy going. The singles are what people will most know this album for. “When Doves Cry,” the aforementioned opening track, and the towering “Purple Rain.” 9 mins of regret looking back at the way a partner was treated. It’s such an excellent song, and YES, I’m aware everyone knows the song, but it’s getting TikTok-ifed takes every bit of power out of it for me. The album picks you up, knocks you down, helps you back up again, and BAM, it’s “Purple Rain” I love how dated it can sound at times, the thumping drum machine beats that fill the air in most of the songs.

Classic album. First time listen.

Me gustó bastante

great album by a great artist. I really enjoyed this album. Maybe I song that I didn't care for (can't remember what that was) but otherwise a very good album

Drugi, "Take Me with U" mi je kul. Prvi, "Let's Go Crazy" mi nekak ni potegnil tok. Uu, "Darling Nikki"poznam, ampak sm redko slišala original Prince verzijo. Čist huda. Pa extremely nasty. Prvič sm jo pa slišala v izvedbi Foo Fighters. "When Doves Cry" je fakin hud. "Purple Rain" pa kr amazing. Ful boljši album k 1999.

Prince is really really good, I think a lot of the time it’s not quite my thing, but when the hits come in they’re really hard to deny. Purple Rain one of the all time iconic tracks. When Doves Cry also massive. In between the big tunes I feel a bit lost like. 4/5 Best Song: Purple Rain

It’s an insanely good album. I can’t even imagine what it was like being around when it dropped because it’s such a part of my musical world now.

My experience of Prince both in those projects and in listening to him elsewhere is threefold. Firstly, he’s a generational songwriter. He crafts things that are so simple but sophisticated at the time. Secondly, he’s super horny and this comes across as intense sensuality. Lastly, he’s not really one for editing and sometimes things can get a bit baggy. This album hits all those points, great songs, super horny and occasionally a bit overlong. The album itself is probably a 3, but it’s got when Doves cry on it which is. 17/5 so let’s call it a 4 overall

um grandíssimo álbum, cheio de sintetizadores fortes e icônicos, instrumentais riquíssimos e uma forte impressão do prince.

I liked it!

Noodle master

OK, the guy could definitely write good songs and play almost everything amanzingly well but I don't see this as a perfect album. The production and most of the synths are too close to the bad sound of the 80s (that of, well, Bad by Micheal Jackson or Ghostbusters) rather than the cool one (New Order...). There are exceptions though: Nikki is a terrific song and When Doves Cry an almost perfect one. Then there is the title track, which is great although it could be way shorter (is it needed to repeat the refrain like 40 times?)

No. 406/1001 Let's Go Crazy 4/5 Take Me With U 3/5 The Beautiful Ones 4/5 (2x) Computer Blue 3/5 Darling Nikki 3/5 When Doves Cry 4/5 (2x) I Would Die 4 U 5/5 Baby I'm A Star 4/5 Purple Rain 5/5 (3x) Average: 4,08 Great album. Prince just has a unique sound that no other artist has.

It's like but it's never quite been love with this one. I get the importance of Prince, and that his legacy and impact was so profound. Some tracks are excellent. But it's not my genre and it just isn't able to really grab my soul no matter how many new chances I give it. Still going to round up here.

Fav songs The Beautiful Ones Computer Blue Darling Nikki Purple Rain

Moody, nostalgic, synth-driven, raunchy.

I enjoyed this significantly more than Sign of the Times. However, I don't really get the Prince love. This is a good album, but it never reaches the heights that Prince's reputation suggests it should.

Probably Prince’s best album. He doesn’t really resonate with me but these songs are inescapable.

mega ale czasem jakies takie dziwne te wokale xD

One of my dad’s favorite albums. A certifiable classic, though it is a little too 80s for me to really fall in love with it. Still, Prince’s talent for big hooks, quirky psychedelic twists, and expansive production make this great.

somehow lots of elements that are normally not for me come together in a singular work that holds a dear. i really usually hate that 80s solo guitar thing unless prince does it! thanatos lovers will be like ohhh there's too much eros. but it's got both ok. fave track when doves cry

The weird, guitar playing man is good at sex.

This one varied in quality for me wildly but definitely more good than bad. I had never heard much of prince outside of the hits so this was definitely a fun listen for me

Not really a Prince fan generally, but... yeah this album is a banger.

Purple rain is like ten minutes to long

Number: 139 Date: 05/22/2026 Artist: Prince Album: Purple Rain Year: 1984 Style: Soul Pop Familiarity: Well-versed (4) Rating: 4 Before: ======= Of course I'm very familiar with Prince and a few of the songs on this album but not that familiar. For instance, I thought I was so familiar with the opener "Let's Go Crazy" because it was prominently featured in one of those Eddie Murphy movies where he plays the cheeky street-smart cop from Detroit, visiting Beverly Hills. However, turns out it's part of the soundtrack of the whole movie "Purple Rain" which was the brainstorm of Prince himself. During: ======= I have to admit that I don't really like this kind of music. I would never sit and listen to this whole album or any of these songs for that matter, of my own volition. 3 Let's Go Crazy 3 Take Me With U 3 The Beautiful Ones 2 Computer Blue 3 Darling Nikki 2 When Doves Cry 4 I Would Die 4 U 2 Baby I'm A Star 4 Purple Rain ----------------------------------------------------- 2.94 WEIGHTED AVERAGE (accounts for song lengths) After : ======= After doing some research on this album and Prince himself, I have to say that I have much more of an appreciate for him and his accomplishments. Still, I don't really like this kind of music. Normally, I would rate the album a 3 but I'll bump it up to 4 due to it's importance. Finally, after some debate, I decided to add the title track "Purple Rain" to my faves of 1984 playlist. Will see it stays there the next time I evaluate it. 3 my personal rating 5 suitability for this list 4 impact ----------------------------------------------- 4 composite rating

In this life you're on your on so, GO CRAZY!!

Please somebody get this man some pussy, horniest record.

Banger!

Lowest of 4s for me for Purple Rain, second half really picks up and the production is lush throughout. It’s not quite my thing so takes some getting into but I can see why people went mad for this

A classic for a reason.

I'm admittedly not the biggest Prince fan -- I've always found some of the more-eccentric vocals a little grating and the synths/rhythms a little basic even while appreciating the guitar playing. At the same time, I admire his skill and pop star aura. I'd definitely listened to parts of Purple Rain before -- namely "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," and "Purple Rain." Let's Go Crazy is probably the gold standard for that sort of 80s party music sound I've always found very mid overall (see also stuff like Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Celebration, Walkin' On Sunshine...). But, if I could have one of those tracks, it would be this one -- love the spoken-word intro, and the closing guitar solo is such an announcement of presence. I should probably mention I've never seen the associated film... but the track order does feel like a filmic progression. Take Me With U through Computer Blue really move from strength to strength. My only stumbling block is "Darling Nikki," which slows things to a screeching halt with an uninspiring sound and storyline and some pretty annoying vocals in the 2nd half. When Doves Cry gets things back on track, even though the main synth backbone rhythm sounds like something from my cheap Casio keyboard. I think the song sounds better in the context of the album. I dig the way I Would Die 4 U transitions seamlessly into Baby I'm a Star, even though the latter is the less-essential version of "Let's Go Crazy" for me. Finally, Purple Rain itself is the album's masterpiece. I always found it a little long in isolation, but as the album's coda it's actually perfect. I will also always think of it in the context of his Super Bowl performance when it rained, only during this song -- still the greatest halftime show ever. I won't say I've been converted into a massive Prince fan, but I can firmly say I'm a fan of this record, a few quibbles aside. I get why it's held in such high regard.

First part of the album is disjointed, two absolutely incredible hits out of nowhere in the back end

It's not my favorite genre, but I recognize that there are very good songs, indeed better than Purple Rain. In fact "let's go crazy" has the kind of punch that I like.

Buen tema atrás de otro buen tema, y cierra con purple rains. espectacular.

fierce

Title track var best, andre ok

8/10 la vara estaba tan baja en los 80 que por supuesto que es un discazo. Bien podría llamarse Purple Rain + some other songs.

Prince is the perfect soul pop rock fusion, impeccable.

Classic. A couple songs I don’t love, but really this is a great album. 4/5

i should watch da movie. Pretty cool overall, very high highs, wasn't really the vibes when i first listened to it unfortunately.

Iconic album for a reason. The big hits, and obviously the title track, are stone cold classics. I can totally understand the 5/5 ratings, but personally, I don't vibe with the album tracks as much as other people, and they kinda come and go.

Have the authors shoved a soundtrack into the best albums list again!? Okay, we'll forgive them this time, since the story is unusual. Prince was so elated by the albeit modest success of his previous album that he brought a script to Warner Music, confronting their bosses with the following fait accompli: "Either you get me a movie for which I'll write the music, or another label will help me do it." The film starring Prince was more or less made, but it turned out to be a passing one, which can't be said about the album! This is Prince's most pop-oriented record, but he sparkles here — from the hedonistic opening track, the music flows through rich, lustful funk (the "Parental Advisory" sign owes its existence to the lyrics of "Darling Nikki") and screeching synthesizers to the monumental ballad of the same name. Do you think an album can simultaneously contain classic of synth-pop and hair-metal? It can!

quite good, i love the textures

Great album.

I hadn't listened to this album before from start to finish but I'm glad that I have. I get the feeling that if my parents were 20 years younger then I might have been brought up on it. A perfect accompaniment for 80s film, pop culture and fashion. Seamlessly blends electronica, punk, rock, soul, R&B, falsetto-cum-screaming and virtuoso guitar licks. It's not for every day, but when you're in the mood to commit to an hour's worth of air guitar and squealing, look no further.

This album felt almost like watching a film, with its dramatic shifts in style and emotion. Despite being genre-blending, it still holds together with a strong sense of identity. The Beautiful Ones and Purple Rain stood out in particular, both delivering powerful emotional impact and memorable guitar moments.

8/10 Buen album, muy divertido. Se me paso rapidísimo, en ningún momento aburre o se hacer pesado

Significant 80's dance/funk album, attains even more significance more so now. Thankfully the music was better than the film.

Almost perfect. A couple of the non hits are really not great.

In that over 4 but not quite 4.5 or higher for me. I'm probably wrong.

Classic album

Enjoyable 80s classic

It was about time to listen to the whole album, and that I did, actually four times in a row. For me, born in the very late seventies, i think Prince was bit too " close" for me to understand or like in my teen years of consuming music. Of course I knew the hit songs, but never really got into listening his full musical repertoire. I remember seeing Purple Rain on telly maybe when I was 12, but I already had moved to more underground taste in music, and in the nineties, 80s was still too near, and not very fashionable. It felt somehow "old" and outdated "disco" for a young girl, who did not want to share a similar taste with the masses. Later on I started to realize his musical geniousness and virtuosity, but somehow I never dug deeper. Glad I did now. What a record, and never before fully realized what an amazing singer he was. Will listen more. Fave song: Take me with U

Great album, obviously! a classic.

Me gustó, me recordó mucho a michael jackson

I was *so* prepared to give this 5 stars. Like "Let's Go Crazy", "Take Me With U", "When Doves Cry", and "I Would Die 4 U" all on one album? What else is there really to say except "yes please!" Unfortunately, then I was confronted with the fact that I don't actually like the title song very much at all, and there's like 9 minutes of that. So alas, Purple Rain falls just short of perfection.

Prince the icon you were and always will be.

heerlijk ! ik kende vooral de single (dit is het geval bij veel muziek. top 2000 syndroom). nonbinair icoon

The first couple songs were harder to listen to, eventually I started to really enjoy the album and appreciate the more modern and almost futuristic elements of the album. As for the title track, Purple Rain, on one hand I didn’t care for the chorus, I think maybe because Prince was so influential, his style was copied a lot, so the style just feels boring and has church music connotations, but towards the end of the song, I grew to really enjoy the instrumentals and felt that ot was a powerful ending to the album. Overall, I really enjoyed the more experimental and upbeat parts of the album, and if I listen to it one more time, I think I will love it.

Electric and smooth but made me extremely uncomfy. It’s good until you realize that Prince is quite freaky. My favorite part was the bit at the end of Let’s Go Crazy. Also, the song Purple Rain gets old real fast.

Fun songs with catchy beats. There is two parts to this album to me. The first one is the songs I haven't heard before. I feel like I forget them as soon as they are over, nothing made me want to listen again or made me hum them later in the day. The second part is the hits that me and everyone else in the world has probably heard many times before. Those stuck straight away and now I keep singing purple rain while cooking.

Where are The Time?!

When I first start listening I’m not gonna lie I wasn’t convinced as to why this album is as loved as much as it is but after listening I do have so say that I am impressed. I really did enjoy his rock cuts more than his rnb attempt I felt like those were kinda weak and a bit tacky if I’m honest but computer blue, baby I’m a star and purple rain are some excellent rock cuts and the guitar solos where great. I don’t think it’s the 10/10 people proclaim it to be that for me is when there are no misses or things wrong with an album but it’s pretty darn close

favs: (obviously) purple rain the beautiful ones computer blue when doves cry i would die 4 u electric intercourse

Love this fruity ahh guy

I fw this hard, his voice is so nice

All of the Prince albums on the list have been new to me and all of them have been surprising. Prince makes bold, eccentric pop music. It's funky, it's sexy, it's dirty, it's weird, and it's very cool. I knew some of the hits off this one, but there was plenty to enjoy across the album. As always, Prince's guitar is a highlight. He's a wild, powerful singer, and he's a killer guitar soloist too. This album cover is so good. That shadowy, cinematic photo is great, but I also love the floral border -- it balances the darkness of the main image nicely.

Really enjoyed need to listen to more

cmon now. incredible. had heard bits of this before but never the entire thing. yall i really need to listen to more prince. how incredible. purple rain at the end hit me like a ton of bricks

Auto 4-star rating. Holy cow.

IDK if I should admit this but I've never listened to this album before, and very little Prince in general. I enjoyed this though and will listen again.

8.5/10. Pure fire. This one just hits different—way more energy, way more attitude. It’s bold, dramatic, and doesn’t play it safe at all. Prince is in full control here, and it shows. Not every track is for me, but the highs are really high. Definitely one I respect and actually enjoy coming back to.

I definitely didn't understand this album when it came out, but I remember it was everywhere. I think that's because it's pretty darn good.

beautiful

Huge fan!

Probably one of the better pop albums of the ‘80s. Its grandiose blending of so many instruments and sounds makes this a well crafted album, producing some of Prince’s best known songs in Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. It does suffer from the classic ‘80s disease of addiction to synth though, and drags a bit on the less remarkable tracks. Enough to hang on for 4 though.

Almost a 5 but the middle few tracks didn’t have quite the same impact as the opening tracks and final few. Still, it’s a brilliant collection of songs. Outstanding songwriting and production that surprisingly doesn’t really feel dated in the same way a lot of 80s records do.

This is an exceptionally well-crafted album with some really good songs, but for whatever reason it leaves me slightly cold emotionally. I really like it, but I don’t love it, and that’s why it doesn’t get the full 5 stars. Like a lot of Prince’s stuff, it’s difficult to genre-type, combining elements of 80s pop, rock, funk and R&B. ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ is a great opener (what an intro that song has too), and ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Purple Rain’ are obviously all-time classics, but most of the rest falls into the ‘very good but not quite great’ category.

loved this album years ago :D

Ah yes, Purple Rain. Widely considered one of the best albums of the 1980s and even if all time, it is considered a highly popular and influential classic. The album is very 1980s-sounding, fusing pop, rock, and soul in a way that sounds distinct to all other artists of the time. The production didn't exactly age well, and the lyrics aren't that good, but the songs are hooky and well-written. There are a few legitimately iconic songs on here, and they're every bit as good as you'd expect, but the album isn't quite the phenomenal experience everyone says it is. It's a good pop/rock/soul record, but it's not quite masterpiece level simply because of some bad lyrics("Darling Nikki" has a terrible first verse) and poorly aged production that sounds hella dated now.

Sorry Prince, I wasn't familiar with your game. De très bonnes musiques, des arrangements et une voix qui s'envole fort, très bon !

This is a great album with some really great songs, but there are a few that hold this back from being a perfect five-star album in my opinion. A couple of them feature a bit of screaming that is pretty harsh and really takes away from the overall enjoyment.

This is hard: there are 2 all-time classic songs on here but the rest of the album is meh. I kinda feel like if this weren’t Prince, and if those 2 songs weren’t so good, this would be a 3, but call it a 3.5 and round up the iconic Prince.

The guy knew how to have a good time

Albummet er nok en 2.5 for mig da jeg synes meget af det er larm, men alene pga. purple rain som er en 10/10 og fordi doves cry og et par andre er fede giver jeg det fire <33

Prince’s guitar playing carries this absolute powerhouse of an album on its back. The first half is weaker than the second, but that is fair enough when the second half has ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Purple Rain’ and several other great songs in a brilliant finish to this classic album.

m gustó mucho, la duración es perfecta. Llegan a ser 4 canciones más y me cansa. destaco Computer Blue y Purple Rain

ok the dove song and purple rain are really good

I like Prince, I don’t love Prince. He was a musical genius and a super talented musician. Like all iconic artists, he had a style and sound unique just to him. Nobody ever heard one of his songs, even if they had never heard it before, and confused it for anyone else but Prince. The way he was layered and stacked his songs between the instruments should be studied in music production classes. He took elements musically and cooked with them like a chef builds flavor. I don’t think this was the best album of the 80’s but it’s a damn good one.

hadn't listend previously, very cool

Faves: Take me with U Darling Nikki I would die 4 u

Classic album, acting not so good

Darling Nikki really tried her hardest to make this a 3/5.

The hits are just so good

Overall a solid album, but I was not super into some of the "filler" tracks. And maybe it's my fault for listening to this with my 16 year old in the car, but I was clutching my pearls a little bit.

3,7 Highlights: When Doves Cry, Purple Rain

schon ziemlich cool

Very nice.

Ok. Ok. I was standing on my deck outside my house with this cassette tape. I hated modern pop like this. I was young. I pulled out the tape and destroyed it. Felt good. Probably 40 years later now. Prince is gone. I recognize his talent But this album. It’s fine. There are three fantastic songs. Then there is some filler. And a few other decent songs. It’s creative. The guitar playing is great. This is not a five star album. I will have to go with 4. Purple rain alone. But those filler songs really drag this one down.

I thought Prince was really experimenting with his vocals. He put everything into the songs. The lyrics were nice and the guitar riffs were amazing.

8.5/10

2nd prince album in 3 days. This one much better. Some great songs

Another album I should have listened to but never got around to it. Kinda dated but not bad

Starts kinda mid, after computer blue becomes goated. Best ones: computer blue, when doves cry, I would die 4 you, baby I’m star and obviously purple rain. Worse ones: first 3:

Very excited and open to listening to Prince! He’s so freaking talented. This album is so fun. So many bangers. Yeah this shit slaps.

Swagger! And bangers! When Dove Cry is sooo good.

Fun, highly produced, sexy.

I’ve heard this baby before. Fairly solid album. Let’s go crazy: 8/10 Such a good album opener. Take me with U: 7/10 Groovy track. The beautiful ones: 6.5/10 Pretty slow. But not too bad. Computer Blue: 6.5/10 Interesting song. Darling Nikki: 4/10 You met her in a hotel lobby doing what now? When Doves Cry: 7.5/10 Makes you wanna dance. So good. I would die 4 you: 6.5/10 Baby I'm a star: 6.5/10 Purple rain: 10/10 Biblical.

It took me a little while to get into this properly, but once I was locked in its really good. While its his most successful, I don't know if its his best. Doves Cry is so good, as is the titular track. The synths, pop vibes, and funk in it all are so fundamentally Prince.

4.1 I gave this one many listens, and I'm glad I did. Firstly, I absolutely love the title track, it's been one of my favourite songs for a long time. Yet I've never been able to enjoy anything else by him. I've tried this album once or twice over the years but could never dig it. I really disliked Sign of the Times when it popped up on this list. But given this is meant to be one of the all time greats, and I've previously had an aversion to it, I told myself I couldn't rate it until after 5 listens. It's definitely a grower. At first it sounds way too 80s, quite dated. Self indulgent in places. But let that wave wash over you and look at what's underneath. His guitar work is amazing. The songs here are exciting and interesting, with a lot of depth. Hell, even the weakest track, Darling Nikki, goes out with a black metal-esque double kick drum filling out the background. Is it one of the best albums of all time? No. It hasn't aged spectacularly, and other than the title track I still don't think anything really holds up as an all time classic. But it is a very, very good album, once you get over the datedness. It makes me wonder how different all my ratings would have been if I had given every other album on this list 5 listens, but sadly man is not immortal. Glad I gave this one the time regardless.

This would be a 3, but as a Minnesotan, I am contractually obligated...

Geezer is swag personified, album is a touch 80's for me but you can tell it's fucking great still.

Two Prince albums in the same week. I think this is his best album and his most well known, but mostly because there aren't AS MANY just really weird songs on there where it feels like you just need to spray him with the hose to calm down. Don't get me wrong, The Beautiful Ones and Darling Nikki are both weird. He has this tendency to just keep wailing about how he wants to get married, and from his previous albums, it's probably only because he wants to have sex with the girl. This one is no different. She's beautiful, he loves her, and then starts whining and screaming because she doesn't want him. Darling Nikki is basically about an escort that he picked up while she was masturbating in the hotel lobby. Lovely. So if I ignore how fucking weird these two songs are or just forget that I know English, the album is great. Prince's singles are absolutely incredible. Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, I would Die 4 U are great songs and they show that he does make music when he has adult supervision to prevent him from coming across as a weird sex offender. Just hard to judge it fairly because I guess i'm just not a Prince fan simply because he really creeps me out with his lyrics. I will say this is his best album and the fact that only 2 of 9 songs are creepy is a big improvement for him.

I still have not seen this movie, but love the album. Highlights: "Let's Go Crazy", "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain"

Groovy! Great first introduction to Prince.

I’m probably missing some cultural context, but I don’t really understand the universal acclaim for this album above other Prince albums. I know it’s technically a movie soundtrack and at times you can tell. Some undeniable stone cold classic tracks and some great grooves but definitely some less interesting moments too.

Very much enjoy the passion in this album. I may be a bit biased because I love Prince/the literal king of sass. But in all actuality, I think his guitar riffs are great in this album and there's a decent variance in tempo throughout the album. Def scream at the top of my lungs to some of these songs...

literally epic i tried to go into this with the mindset of "rate the album not the name/artist" payed close attention to the songs i don't know quite as well and i will say, every song on this album is >= average. good music, if i listen again i would listen more to lyric but the music was too good it was distracting this one is magic.

Fette bra, ikke ei dårlig låt her egentlig men æ syns Prince e litt creepy. 4,5

I love this album

Super stuff

The guy was a serial abuser of women; I won't be making a habit of returning to this album but for the music alone it's an easy 4

Favorite songs: Let's Go Crazy, Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain

Clearly a well crafted album. Each song in isolation may not fully land but there is an overarching concept and quite a lot of variety that makes me feel like there is an architectural layer to this album beyond just a collection of songs. I'm holding back from a 5 since this isn't fully landing for my musical taste, but I can appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into this.

Defined a generation. Every Gen X had this cassette tape and could sing along with most of the album. Listening to it today brought back a lot of nostalgia. It was pretty far ahead of its time both lyrically and musically.

Very close to elite.

It's nice music I like most of the songs just fine, you Can tell he was a very creative and talented artist, there are touches of hard rock with lots of guitar and even disco music. It's an eclectic álbum. However none of the songs really got to me. 3,75/5.

1. Let’s Go Crazy - Peak classic. Gotta say though that the opening didn’t really connect with me, but overall incredibly catchy and fun song. 10/10 2. Take Me With U - Sound like a basic Prince song until the last minute where it begins to feel like sweet song of wanting to be with someone you love. 8.5/10 3. The Beautiful Ones - Very touching song that represents the strong emotions of wanting to know if who you admire really wants you and how great it feels to get the question off of your chest. 9/10 4. Computer Blue - For a song that’s mostly guitar solo (reminiscent of Pink Floyd) I still enjoyed the vocals and everything else. 8/10 5. Darling Nikki - Wasn’t ready for that intro at all. Definitely different from every other song so far, I guess he can be a bit of freak. Still incredible song though and found myself bopping my head. The end is certainly something odd as well, and yes, I listened to it backwards. 7.3/10 6. Sweeping ballad that really really represents his style on this album. 8/10 7. I Would Die 4 U - Solid song, the end is especially catchy. Transitions incredibly into the next track. 7.5/10 8. Baby I’m a Star - Upbeat composition and great message about how he’s a star not in his life but for his love. I really love all of the vocals, both Prince and the backups. 9.2/10 9. Purple Rain - Incredible ballad and a great way to end the album. Prince mentioned in an interview that purple rain is when there’s blood in the rain and that the red + blue = purple. The song is about being with the one you love most even in the end of the world. 9/10 Overall: 8.5/10. I remember my English teacher mentioning Prince and how she listened to him as a kid and began to look at the lyrics and see how freaky they were. I can see what she means a bit, but overall these tracks are very sweet and emotional which gives this album a good score.

Iconic album cover, decent alternate jerseys, and great length (except for purple rain). The hits are great but other songs are pretty boring.

I feel like I've never really connected with Prince's music. There are some good songs on here, but none that really hold up as well as some of the other huge 80s hits outside of Purple Rain

This made me want to listen to more prince. And purple rain definitely hits after listening to the full album

Favorite tracks: Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain Endlessly excellent, Prince and The Revolution are firing on all cylinders here. Purple Rain is as playful and party-centric as it is sensual and romantic, and dear god do his insane screamed vocals give me goosebumps.

What a sexy album

If I was as sexy as Prince I'd probably be this horny too to be fair

This was a surprisingly good time. Listened to it twice

What a lovely album. I'm not a big Prince fan, but maybe I should be.

Classic Prince with that 80s sound, but he's still made it work for today. 2 classics on here. 'Purple Rain' is an amazing way to end the album. Some good upbeat and funky tracks

Imagining Prince laying down some sick guitar solos right now... This record fits itself right into the 80s canon. Those synths, guitars, and reverb drums pair well with Prince's heartfelt singing. His vocal deliveries give off a joyful, almost manic vibe to the songs. Plus extra point for "Purple Rain" as it sounds so much like an 80s "Mayonaise". (4-4.5)

Very funky. A few songs that are great, but purple rain… absolutely beautiful.

A very good album, but I do think "Sign" is the better Prince album. Purple Rain remains one of the most cathartic songs ever in my opinion.

such a great album! Bangers all the way through, so much feeling. Positives: Dancing album, great songs, great lyrics, great beats! Negatives: Not much to say here Favourite song upon listening: Baby I'm a Star & Erotic City Started/Finished: 12pm 26/02/2026 - 10pm 26/02/2026 (3 listens) Did I grow up with this one: yes Number of albums reviewed: 4 (including this one) 1 is bad, 2 is not for me, 3 is good, 4 is great, 5 is legendary

Classic

really good no comment

This album reeks of sweaty, sticky and clammy sex. Prince mix of r&b, funk and pop is so well put together that it actually creates a music genre of its own. We call that Prince.

genuinely a fun classic that doesn't sound generic in the slightest

good album

This would be a 5 if it had been recorded either 10 years earlier or 10 years later. Those 80s drums and excessive chorus bring it down a notch.

Favorite tracks: - let’s go crazy - take me with U - I would die 4 U - Baby I’m a star - Purple rain

Decent 4

It was good! Enjoyed it

Wait I thought the list didn't allow soundtrack albums??? Not complaining though, When Doves Cry song of all time

amazing, transcends genre.

It's Prince

I'm not sure if I want to like this more than I actually like it.

It’s Prince!

Incredible album. Defined an era. Influenced practically everything.

This isn't the type of album I usually gravitate towards, but I cannot in good conscience rate it as only an average 3 because it's exquisitely crafted.

What can you say? Classic Prince. This album is full of killer 80s pop and interesting experimental stretches into Prince's style. Blistering or tender or both when needed.

Easy 4. Amazing man amazing musician. Loaded with hits and also the song (Darlin’ Nikki) that made Tipper Gore mad and led to the explicit stickers.

A short musical genius with big hair that loves screaming guitars and purple … wait of course I should have known it’s not RJD … as there are no dragons . Sorry I get Dio and Prince mixed up all the time. But love both . Unlike the film this has aged pretty well , even if it is hard to separate the two.A brilliant collection of rock fused funk .

What a little hoe

Too good

Da when doves cry fino alla fine è un 5 stelle per me, la prima metà è un 3, quindi è un 4

Such a banger. Always on repeat for me

Starts off kinda weak, builds up well. Can see why it’s a classic.

Overall Rating - 3.94/5 (7.89/10). Mostly a very good album. Prince is a great guitarist. This album sound like the mid-80's.

Banger for a finisher

Woooofff horneeyyy Fabulous singer. Was convinced he was part of the gay community, apparently not. Too bad :( guys a masterpiece. and then u end it with purple rain?????? gay anthem!!!!!! I SAW A REVIEW CALL PRINCE THE LITTLE PURPLE PERVERT HAHAHAHHAHAH NO WAY THAT HILARIOUS I WISH I WAS THAT FUNNY

While I didn't love every song, this album does have a special quality about it. It has an "air" about it. I loved "When Doves Cry", "Wonderful Ass", and "Let's Go Crazy".

You can feel the amount of influence this album had on even music from today. Some real bangers on this.

A few absolute unskipable bangers, a few fillers. Either way, it's always interesting.

Ngl wasn’t expecting him to absolutely belter some tunes, more fool me I suppose. The beautiful ones was a beautiful surprise. Fire album, must cop on vinyl.

Heeel Vibey

Prince war der Knaller.

didn't finish

1. Let's go crazy - a cheerful disposition towards out inevitable death. 2. Take me with U - Discooooo 3. The beautiful ones - love triangle song 4. Computer Blue - Love life 5. Darling Nikki - Sex song? The last part was tripping LOL must have caused controversy. 6. When Doves cry - Love but also generational trauma, repeat of patterns? I liek the line about butterflies and doves. 7. I would die 4 u - Lova again! How fascinating that love is a major theme for most music. And this album is more instrumental than lyrics.

prince you’ll always be iconkc

It was much better than I thought I would.

This is that peak prince sound with lots of instrumentation and perfect clarity

Stranger things

So many hits, great opener and awesome sequence to close!

It feels like the more refined and well produced sound of this genre

First time hearing this and its going to need a couple more listens, but I get why it's considered that highly

Improved with run time and has clearly inspired bands like the Alabama Shakes

pretty cool

I'm not a big Prince music fan overall. This is perhaps ny preferred Prince album. It ties into memories of this cassette I had in my car in the early 1980s. And meeting Pam Hoffman in a movie theater.

Let's Go Crazy - 4/5 Take Me with U 2/5 The Beautiful Ones 3/5 Computer Blue 2/5 Darling Nikki 3/5 When Doves Cry 5/5 I Would Die 4 U 5/5 Purple Rain 5/5 Baby I'm a Star 5/5 Purple Rain 5/5 Overall Album 3.9

Solid album with a bunch of songs that stood out to me

a classic 80s album

Always liked it. Still think Purple Rain says Purple Rain too many times though.

Catchy songs, but a bit overrated. I can see how it was revolutionary at the time, but because of all the hype, it seemed to disappoint a little bit. Purple Rain and When Doves Cry are incredible songs though.

First ever Prince album I’ve listened to in full! 4.5/5 ⭐️ - Cannot fault it except for Darling Nicki isn’t my vibe. R.I.P Prince ❤️ Great use of rock, pop and funk sprinkle in some disco mix here and there. Prince is an absolute genius and gone too soon for this lifetime. When Doves Cry is amazing, same as purple rain (having a 2026 resurgence currently) and baby I’m a star, lesser credited than the previously mentioned songs, but such a ‘sleeper hit’ for an album that is so commercially successful lol. Favourite Song: Baby I’m a Star (tune) and Purple Rain (obvs) Least Favourite: Darling Nikki (it’s so SCARY WHAT THE HECK)

Loved. Knew the big ones, let's get crazy and purple rain. I get the sexual liberation of Prince now. Always knew of him as an icon but this is hot. If I was 22 in the clubs when these tracks were on, this would have been anthemic. Will absolutely be returning to this album.

Lot of filler but wow, the bangers hit hard

Banger. Some in the middle waffle though it must be said. Plus moto on album cover

I mean, it's purple rain. There are other songs on the album, but there is also purple rain. I don't even like purple. But I like purple rain.

top songs were when doves cry, baby I'm a star and let's go crazy purple rain is good but I think needed to be heard live or have a deep emotional connection with to fully enjoy it

Some bangers on here.

I listen to this album and remind myself that I like Prince and that I listen to a lot of his stuff and that When Doves Cry is perfect and yet I keep remembering his like major schizophrenic religious break and how much he sucked and then I can no longer ignore all of the parts of this album that are way too loud or annoying and there's so much screaming and it's like okay let's calm down but it's still really good I guess... I think it's a 3 in my mind but for the culture I have to at least raise it to a 4 lol

The title song is a banger, simple as.

One of the best ending to an album that you’ll ever hear.

A highly agonizing rating to determine. I came up with a pretty detailed theory some time ago that Prince is the ultimate pop musician. Like, if you graph out his stats, I think he's just the best to ever do it. Great vocals, songwriting, performing, musicianship, iconic aura and imagery. I submit that he's the only person to ever stat-max in this way. There’s a couple skips on this album for me, which isn’t normally enough to keep me from 5’ing, but when there’s only 9 tracks I feel like I can’t in good conscience.

This was my first time listening to a whole Prince album, and that run from the opening synths of When Doves Cry to the ultimate guitar solo notes of Purple Rain? It has few peers in all of recorded music, holy shit. Prince really packed every genre that had been conceived as of ‘84 into that 4-song span, and did it well. But I’ll be honest, didn’t like most of the first half of this album. Too much eighties sauce, overpowering, too rich and schmaltzy.

i’ve never like LISTENED to prince but you can’t deny he’s a legend and the music is banger. i’ll probably keep listening to this album

Prince at his best

princeee 💜

Some classic bangers and new listens too

So many songs I've heard but never made the connection were by Prince/on this album! Definitely one to return to.

Pretty iconic

Rating: 8/10 Really an album’s album. When you think of a solid popular 80’s album this could probably be it. Doesn’t mean as much to me as it does to a lot of other people so it’s not some classic 5 stars in my eyes but it’s undeniably great music

Pretty good, I Would Die 4 U favorite song, Purple Rain is such a sick closer 7.7/10

I listen to the slumber and I think it’s good, it’s not really for me since I don’t really enjoy funk rock but it is a good rock sub genre and I already knew about prince and I thought he was a good artist, it’s very intricate the rhythm is very interesting and scream 80s so I thought that was good. My fav song from the album is “Baby I’m a star” and “Purple Rain”☔️ ****/5

I dislike heavy synth. The album started and I knew it was well loved, but so is ACDC and I've never been a fan. Prince won me over with vibes and voice alone. So fair, take your 4 stars.

Iconic album, with some brilliant tracks. I kind of want to give it five stars, but it's just not the kind of music I turn to again and again. The title track will never not be amazing!

Prince's songwriting here is just so inventive and fun. He took risks, and even if not every one landed quite right, the ride was so worth it. I am also a sucker for the whole "one song flows right into the next" thing, which happens a few times.

Iconic, purple rain the best obviously, I didn’t listen to the WHOLE thing because there’s so much and I don’t have time but I’ll def get back to it

Nostalgia, me mummy’s favourite songs of all time

It’s good and some undeniable classics. Is it my fav Prince album ehh. Is it overrated, definitely. Despite being a monster of a person I’m giving 4 stars. Would be 3.5 if I could.

Wow, what a work. Helped me understand why he is so regarded

Good album. I’ll listen to this more and it also makes me want to check out more from Prince. 4.5/5

What creativity, what richness, what melodies!! Even though the album is old, Prince was undeniably a pioneer and an accomplished musician. I enjoyed listening to this album without falling in love with it, and it's one I probably won't listen to again, which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars.

Actually never listened to the whole album before now but always liked a couple songs off it (you know which)

I really liked the guitar. Knew Purple Rain.

Brilliant album. Starts off as a warm up and ends with me strutting through the street like I’m at the club. Definitely a stronger album in the second half for me. Adore Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry, Die 4 U and Purple Rain. Strong 4.5!

Growing up as a child in the 80s, I think Purple Rain was too sophisticated for me to appreciate. I certainly enjoyed listening to it now as a seasoned 47yr old. And it made me wonder what it would have been like to be a teen in the 80s instead of a kid. Of course, When Doves Cry is amazing but the standout today for me was Baby I’m a Star. 01-08-2026

figo, ma non la mia tazza di tè

Atomico

I will get the problem out of the way first: I don't think that whatever Prince sings about is really that interesing lyrics-wise; if you've listened to one song, you've basically listened to all (most) of them. But what makes Prince really shine is his performance -- instrumentals, vocals, and the exuberance -- which is on full display in Purple Rain. Who cares about what he sings anyway?

i loved purple rain (obvi) but overall a good 80s album that i will 100% listen to again

loved it! purple rain is iconic and a favourite of mine, but the songs are quite long so it ends up getting repetitive

Prince makes sexy songs, alright. Better than Michael Jackson by the way. My eyeballs popped out when I found out about the “Purple Rain” movie. The film and the album are one whole idea. I’ll watch it, I have to see it. Why the fuck do we need The Weeknd’s Die For You when we already have I Would Die 4 U by Prince. Prince is a master and innovator, The Weeknd is a copycat. (I’m being too harsh on The Weeknd, it’s just a trolling-roasting mood) Wtf, The Weeknd even copied the idea of creating low-quality movies with his own acting, that’s such a shame for him. I was writing it while listening Purple Rain and there’s a line “I never wanted to be your weekend lover”. Even Prince didn’t love The Weeknd. Well, back to the album. Yeah, it’s impactful, well written, Prince made almost everything alone. He’s kind of the Kevin Parker of the 80s, but on a bigger scale. That’s wow, because Michael Jackson is like Frank Sinatra — voice + performer. That’s all, not the author and musician. That’s not bad, just they’re living on different planets. And I rate it differently, I’m biased towards standalone authors. Prince is everything everywhere all at once. That’s a huge respect to the dude. He was an author, a producer, a performer, a voice. He even made a whole soundtrack album for Batman by Tim Burton! What a legend. Genius. I didn’t fully catch the vibe of the album, but I’ll update my review couple days later after watching the movie and maybe I’ll add more songs to my playlist. 4/5 —————————————— Liked songs: — When Doves Cry

It was quite nice to listen to it and it was something different from what i usually listen to. The song Darling Nikki surprised me a little yet in a good way rating: 8.50 / 10

05.01.26 : j’ai accroché au début, décroché au milieu, bouquet final légendaire. à réécouter pour mieux apprécier les chansons individuellement. premier tirage d’album très en adéquation avec le contexte (final de stranger things il y a 4 jours)

Purple rain puurple raaainnnn

This was a great listen, I particularly enjoyed the fifth track which told the story of 'Nikki', a young women following her dream of becoming a barista. The song details how she peruses magazines about coffee art at a conference held in a hotel and has a pleathora of devices to assist with the preparing of piping hot coffee-based dishes. There's a triumphant moment where the narrator recounts his excitement atwatching the young women grinding beans for the first time. At least I think that's what it's all about, I must confess I didn't listen too closely to the lyrics as I was somewhat distracted as I was engaging in some outre sexual practices while listening

Very nostalgic and it’s prince yk but I feel like it’s not what I’m looking for

I've never understood the hype behind Prince but after 2 listens through this album I appreciate him more.

Let’s go crazy so tuff it’s my fav 8/10 2025/12/29

8/10 Favourite: Purple Rain Least Favourite: Take Me With You

I think this is the first time I have listened to Purple Rain all the way through. Some great songs, some truly weird, all experimental and interesting.

Little man. Big, big sexual sound. Always loved When Doves Cry. Re-listening brought back memories of dancing and cocktails.

I danced

very 80s, idk if it's for me though (incredible guitar solos + scream). might save let's go crazy. i thought the last 2 mins of purple rain (the song) were unnecessary

Just finished watching the finale of Stranger Things and the first song and last song on this album are used to great effect. Purple Rain is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. The last 4 songs on the album really end it on a bang. Not a perfect album though due to some weak songs in the middle. 4/5.

kinda disco. great instruments. it’s prince

Beautiful.

lets go crazy

70/1001 A great album with huge hits that I probably don’t play often enough. Always enjoy it when I do. A great start and a great finish. About as ‘80s as it gets. 7/10

good ig

I remember sitting in my cousin‘s bedroom, staring at the poster of Prince up on the wall, riding the purple motorcycle and listening to this album before my brother narc’d us out, and my parents came up and quickly removed me from the room. I didn’t understand why my parents were so ardent about me NOT listening to this album. After listening to Darlene Nikki now, I kinda actually get it. Man that song is dirty! For me this album is a classic with skate-rink standards like Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain. This time I actually really enjoyed the song Baby, I’m a Star, as well. It definitely had a 1980s-pop meets 1970 disco-funk vibe. Growing up in the time, I knew there was a movie (which I never saw) and this album was everywhere. It’d be interesting to see if this album still translates with younger generations who didn’t grow up in the context. Either way it’s still fascinating knowing Prince pretty will record this entire album on his own and played every instrument. He may have been a short, arrogant prick, but damn he was a good musician!

Random thoughts: * This is probably peak Prince and the one I think of. * It has some of the more freakier edge but still all of the pop fun. * There are some all-time classic hits on here. My favorite is "I Would Die 4 U" * This is really a classic with all the hits. * The non-hits are fine but aren't why I'll listen to this album again.

It's very good, but also very horny

Liked more than average.

Thought it was pretty good (didn’t listen to the whole thing yet though!!)

fun listen. great guitar passages throughout. i referred some of the more poppy cuts from the album. i’m curious to watch the movie as well and also learn more about the story. wasn’t really paying attention to lyrics, just sort of trying to find a vibe. i can understand why this album is on this list, and why he’s so important to the state of minnesota. will revisit again!

Epic voyage Album to listen to in one go

This is in my personal top albums, I find it dense and layered and emotionally powerful. Even after all here years in hear it the same each time.

Gratuitously overblown and and an album that I’ve flip flopped on because of that. In some ways it is too bloated and showy for my tastes, but there is some genuinely good songcraft and musicianship underneath it that is hard to knock down. Parts of the album have aged more poorly than others (the use of drum machines still sounds a little in its infancy here and might have aged better if they were played in live instead) but Prince’s guitar playing here is sublime at times (obviously at the end of purple rain, but sprinkled through other songs too) and easy to see why he is often cited as a musician’s musician.

It's the most known Prince. But it's still top Prince.

Delightfully strange & loaded with classics.

Sounds like psychedelic space music Ngl every song is very vibey. I can see why my mom likes him. This album just makes you wanna get groovy I already knew when doves cry and purple rain tho 8/10

Pancakes

Wasn’t big prince fan but he grows on me and super talented

Listened to it while getting my teeth cleaned

twas good. I think this album probably gets more love for its ingenuity than anything but i do like it. 4.3

87% Best: Let’s Go Crazy; Computer Blue; When Doves Cry; I Would Die 4 U; Purple Rain Must-Hear? Sure
