If not Prince's best album (which I think it is) it is his most accessible.
This album has universal appeal. Most people have heard at least one of the tracks. Great entry album for new Prince fans. Low 5, for rollercoaster of themes best listened to alone.
Prince was a genius, I acknowledge that. When he was on, he was on and Purple Rain is the best example of his work. 5/5.

An absolute banger of an album, there isn’t a bad track on here which easily makes it a 5 out of 5. From the freneticness of I would die for you through two the mellow vibes in the beautiful ones for me this was Prince at his absolute best
It’s easy – and helpful – to forget that this is the soundtrack to one* of the worst films of the 1980s. I mean, I really worked on liking this film. Really worked. But after a fourth watch, I pretty much lost the will to live. (I was, in a dumb 12 year old kind of way, quite shocked to discover that it is actually ok to like the album but hate the film. Sort of like loving the sinner but hating the sin.) *‘Purple Rain’, believe it or not, is not even the worst film Prince made in the 80s.

The G.O.A.T. with one of my all time favorite albums. I could ramble on for hours about this one, and nobody wants that, so I'll just say 5 stars and leave it at that.
Driving, sexual, anthemic. This album is obviously in the upper echelons of popular music. Prince was a musical chameleon and this album reflects his best. His musicianship is understated despite the fact that his guitar playing is some of the best. He always did what was best for the song at hand.

I remeber being kid in the video store and seeing the wall sized poster for this album/movie. I had no real idea of who Prince was and my parents seemed pretty eager to keep it that way, but I remeber being frozen in awe of just how damned cool Prince must be. So, the elephant in the room - Darling Nikki. What a singularly fascinating song. I'm sure the sexual subject matter and the outro with lyric played in reverse is a big part of why this whole album was the focus of so much conservative and censorship ire. It's probably also part of the reason why my parents weren't stoked to see me gawking at the poster, all those years back. If you can look past that though, it is a relentlessly catchy track, merging funk, rock and healthy portion of musical theater. Outside of that one salacious track, the rest of the album is focused on common funk and R&B lyrical themes. The arrangements, the live band vibe, Prince's vocal diversity and improvisation all come together with fluid perfection. Nearly every track is a stand alone hit, and played back to back they sound cohesive and congruent. An all out great album!
This album was in my house soon after it’s release (an LP purchased by my sister I believe), I’ve listened to it I’m sure a hundred times, and very happily listened to it again as it came up on this list. I think it’s a true masterpiece, blending psychedelic funk, R&B and Soul, pop and rock With a seamless precision not seen before or since. Prince’s vocals are as good as anything James Brown did, as good as anything by Michael Jackson - and he’s a virtuoso guitarist to boot. This one will survive the ages

Wow, simply wow. His virtuoso playing and singing, mixed with his writing and sense of performing, all create an album that throughout is completely unique and authentic, blending all the sounds and genres from the 80s. A great run time as well with on point production. The entire vine felt like a concert with that legendary outro to Purple Rain the song to conclude it. Prince is probably the greatest musician in 20th century popular music. What can he not do?

This album is prime Prince for me. He may have gone deeper lyrically on later albums, and certainly broke as much (or more) new ground sonically elsewhere, but PURPLE RAIN is nothing if not pure Pop/R&B genius. There were a lot of great movie soundtracks in the 80s (Footloose, Top Gun, The Big Chill, to name a few) but PURPLE RAIN was more than just movie music - it was THE soundtrack of my high school years. Every night building our homecoming float in Myers' barn, we blasted that album (hoping the chaperones weren't listening too closely when Darling Nicky came on!). Our pompon teams' signature routine was to I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm A Star. At least a couple of weekend nights were spent catching the film at Bella Vista Cinemas. And I remember wishing the title track would never end as I sweatily clung to the cute girl I had a crush on, sharing the last song of a school dance. Prince of course had many other great albums & songs, but when I think of him, I always think first of this album. Listening to it brings up a huge wave of nostalgia, this time manifesting in a big purple rain cloud.
Purple Rain is one of the best Prince albums and the soundtrack of the film with the same name. The film is forgettable, the album is not. It contains of course the magnificent ballad "Purple Rain", but also classics like "Let's Go Crazy", "Darling Nikki", "I Would Die 4 U" and "Computer Blue". A perfect example of all the things that make Prince a legendary artist.
It was pretty good, but everything sounded the same after a while.
Legendary. Sent me down the rabbit hole of watching live performances. His Super Bowl halftime show may never be topped. Best track: Purple Rain

I know he is in a band with Freddie Mercury right now fighting over who gets to wear the tightest, brightest, studded out fit. Rock on gentleman. Easier to list which songs I didn’t like-none.
Epic album. So many upbeat good groove bangers before possibly the greatest closing track ever. The more I hear this album the more I love it.

Damn HBO Max for removing the film after adding it only 3 months ago. This album is best experienced through the film. Despite this, Prince combines pop, rock, R&B, electronic, and dance and experiments with every known instrument and sound the human mouth can make, and you've got to appreciate how much each track differs must each other while still being glued together by Prince's voice, personality, and themes. There is a balance found in every song. There's never too much vocals or too much instrumental. Everything mixes so well, and despite all but one song go 4 minutes or longer, there's always something new and exciting to enhance the experience. Despite its popularity, I'm actually not too big of a fan of the opener "Let's go crazy", but I admit it's a great way to excite the audience for what's to come. I like the experimental sound and storytelling of "Darling Nikki," which as we all led to the creation of the Parental Advisory label (just for referencing masturbation). "When Doves Cry" is without a doubt my favorite Prince song, and quite possibly a candidate for one of my favorite pop songs of all time. Thank god for it being 6 minutes. I'm a sucker for New Wave, so "I would die 4 U" really resonates with my pop soul. Finally, "Purple Rain" smacks us with heartbreaking lyrics in the first half while the other half is a masterpiece in music composition, extending the story without a single word.
Tremendous. Triumphant. Transcendent. Fourth Tr word. I’ve never listened to this full album as the artist intended it. I have now remedied that frankly unconscionable failing. This is the sort of thing I signed up for with this challenge.

No question this gets a 5. It's Prince. It's one of the more formative albums of my childhood. Purple Rain was the closing song of every dance in middle school and high school. It's a classic, he's a genius and it deserves all of the stars.

Absolutely loved this album, a real rock classic. I like the way the whole album is great and upbeat. This was also the first time listening to the Purple Rain song in the 9 minute variant. All I can say is… wow!
Maybe I’m biased because of New Girl but this album was amazi by. Lots of special hits on it and although it was thoroughly 80’s, something about a few of the songs were truly timeless. Best of his niche/sub genre. 4.5/5

I am not the biggest Prince fan but this is certainly a classic album. I hear funk, rock, crazy colourful sounds, R&B beats.... still sounds like him all the way through. Surprised I hadnt heard all songs already. Its the highest of 4s and the lowest of 5s for me

What a struggle. I was excited going in as 'popular' is an understatement for Prince and Purple Rain. Surprisingly though I found everything incredibly jarring on the first listen. Had I stopped there I would have thought about rating it a respectful 2 but I ended up listening through the album 4 more times. My opinion improved on each round and while I still wouldn't claim to be a fan of Prince's excentric singing style I'm happy to report that I ended up liking this album after all.

Standouts Let's Go Crazy When Doves Cry I Would Die 4 U Purple Rain
Some absolute bangers on here
Prince really shows exactly why he became such an icon on Purple Rain. This album is such a great mix of rock, pop, R&B, and funk, all mashed together into something that somehow feels completely natural. You get fun songs, emotional songs, funky songs, huge arena-ready moments, and that unmistakable ’80s sound. But even with how much it represents its era, Prince still feels like he was a few steps ahead of everybody else. Obviously, the big singles are classics, but I was pleasantly surprised by some of the deeper cuts too. Computer Blue was probably the biggest surprise for me. That song is just incredibly fun, and Baby I’m a Star has that same kind of energy. There’s so much personality throughout this album, and you can really hear how much creativity and care went into it. I wasn’t completely sold on every track, and there were a couple that felt a little more like filler compared to the highlights. But when Purple Rain is at its best, it is really hard to argue with. Prince sounds confident, ambitious, weird, emotional, and ridiculously talented all at once. It was also nice hearing the full album versions of songs I’m used to hearing on the radio. Radio edits can chop things down quite a bit, so hearing some of these tracks actually stretch out gives them a different feel. Purple Rain especially benefits from that. Letting that song fully play out makes it feel enormous, and it works perfectly as the album’s closing statement. Yeah, this one deserves the reputation. Great album.
Lets go crazy - fun intro and lyrics, catchy hook and bridge, gets you in the mood for the rest of the album, fun swingy riffs and synths, intro whilst long is enjoyable (4) take me with U - nice female vocals, interesting contrast to the first song sounding completely different, odd drumming, synth near the end adds an interesting change (7) the beautiful ones - interesting vocals, nice slower tempo, spoken words add an interesting element, quite bland, picks up towards the end as princes vocals harshen yet is not worth the build up (9) computer blue - nice guitar, interesting intro, fun rhythm (8) darling Nikki - fun instrumental, 'memorable' lyrics, guitar sounds great, very dance-able (5) When doves cry - amazing vocals with great backup, Michael Jackson vibes, nice drums, fun outro but slightly too long (6) i would die 4 U - fun vocals, bouncy rhythm, beautiful lyrics yet kinda basic (3) baby im a star - nice jazzy piano, best vocals on the album, nice guitar licks, backup vocals are great (1) purple rain - one of the saddest songs oat, lovely guitar, classic, massive whiplash from the previous track, beautiful piano (2)
First of all I never saw the movie. So I don't if the movie is any good. But I enjoyed the soundtrack. Great songs. Great music. Oh well, it's Prince of course! So: 4/5
When this one popped up on the schedule, I genuinely thought this would be an easy 4 stars, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed by this after a lot of years away from it. I didn’t get Prince at all when this was originally released, but I rediscovered it in my late teens and had a period where I devoured his stuff. Listening to this one now, the highs are very high, but there’s a lot that feels too experimental and indulgent, leaving the whole album a little too patchy. Nonetheless, the title track is an all-timer and lifts the whole thing above that 4-star bar, just.
Not much to say that hasn't already been said. An amazing album that repeatedly hammers you with great hooks. The incredible showcase of vocal mastery is the cherry on top and a personal highlight. Favourite track: Let's Go Crazy
Great record, very unique sound - drums especially. The hits are fantastic, but the album tracks are interesting and quite good as well.
4 Boy, where to begin with this one. My first thought is of my dad, Prince’s biggest fan. I know this isn’t actually his favorite (shoutout to Sign 'O' The Times), but I still associate most of these songs with him - Let’s Go Crazy especially, which has developed into his signature bar karaoke performance (shoutout to Tenth Street Saloon). My second thought is of this CD circulating between the cars of my sibling and me. Tbh, I don’t know exactly how that ended up being - my Dad probably just borrowed them at some point and brought the album with him - either way, while I’m not quite the Prince fan he is, I used to let it play in the background on a few occasions, so a part of me associates this with driving around my hometown. My third thought - anyone who’s taken the Warner Bros Studio Tour is probably aware of this fact, but the photo for the album cover was taken on the lot, in the exact “alleyway” that the famous upside-down kiss from the original Tobey Maguire Spider-Man would later take place. I know that seems like a weird initial thought for an album like this, but it honestly pops into my head more often than not when I glance at it. I digress, if you ask me or most music listeners I would suspect, this is Prince’s finest hour. Like, come on, half of this album is considered among some of the best works of his entire career, and honestly, they really are that good. Let’s Go Crazy and Purple Rain in particular form the kind of opener/closer combination that most artists only dream of having, with the former being one of the most fun, “welcome to the party”-type tracks I’ve ever heard, and the latter being an absolutely beautiful, anthemic ballad that not only defines the spirit of this album, but arguably Prince’s entire career. I’m sure my dad is aware of this fact, but it was originally envisioned as a country duet with Stevie Nicks, which is wild to me - to be honest, I really can’t imagine the song any other way. However, my actual favorite song on the album, and possibly across Prince’s entire catalog, is Take Me With U, though I actually don’t have a strong reason as to why - I guess I just find it catchy, the strings cool, and I suppose when you have someone that makes you feel the sentiment of the lyrics, it resonates a little more. That said, Darling Nikki and When Doves Cry are also favorites despite not being especially relatable, and even a bit crude in the case of Nikki, but I still think they’re really well put together pop songs (the minimalist musical approach to Doves works wonders). Unfortunately, I don’t feel quite the same about I Would Die 4 U, which is probably my least favorite on the album. As diverse and lush as the overall package is, IWD4U feels safe and formulaic. As for the rest of this album (The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, Baby I’m a Star), while I can’t say I love the tracks, I can’t say I hate them either. I think my dad has a soft spot for Computer Blue, but it doesn't really do much for me. Sorry, Dad. I’ll admit The Beautiful Ones has a nice buildup to it, though I also find it a bit long and slow, and as for Baby I’m a Star, I mostly consider it an extension of I Would Die 4 U. Still, I really think the tour de force this album is is felt through and through, and combined with the sentimental value it holds with me, I can’t go any lower than a 4. Plus, come on, that production is incredible. While I can’t say it’s my favorite album from a Minneapolis-based artist this past week, it’s certainly #2. I look forward to seeing what my dad has to say about it.

Yeah, definitely a classic, revered album. I appreciate it, but I don't know if I love love love it as much as a lot of other people, and I do think there's a filler track or two in here. But still, I definitely appreciate it.

Just learned that these reviews are public, if not individually identifiable, so I might take a bit more care with them lol. Never actually listened to this one all the way through before, nor have I seen the movie yet. The musicianship and arrangements are immaculate, notably the seamless transitions between tracks; the songwriting is very good; I have some trouble with the extremely 80s production, which I realize is a skill issue on my part. Everything kind of sounds like it was tracked on a cheap synth or recorded inside a tin can, or both, as was the fashion at the time, and I can't quite get over that. It all just sounds a little thin somehow, despite its tremendous punch and tightness. I wonder if some kind of different listening setup (vinyl? FLACs?) would help. 4 stars for now.

It’s so wild to me that Darling Nikki, a raw, experimental thing that triggered the first album content ratings, is followed by When Doves Cry, which might be the most quintessential 80s pop hit. This album isn’t boring for a second, but I could use less of Prince’s shrieking high notes.
I think my ears are pregnant after this.
I really considered giving this 5 but some of the non hit songs being the rating down just enough. It’s still a really good album.

388/1089 birthday no.2 on this project, makes a change from last year’s leonard cohen liked the first two tracks but the screechy vocals in The Beautiful Ones was REALLY not for me when doves cry is tooo iconic overall i liked this album a fair bit but maybe less than sign o the times faves: when doves cry, i would die 4 u, take me with u 70/100
An all-time album opener with "Dearly Beloved, We are gathered here..." and it's just pure pop rock bliss from there. I'm not over the moon about prince, although you don't need to be over the moon to know the man is a goddamn genius/wizard/genie/sexgod. Not every track is perfect, which is no sin. The highs are so high, and the title track to close kicks ass. This reminds me to rewatch his Super Bowl halftime show (in the rain!). Best ever, IMO.

Having listened to a few Prince albums during the 1001 I’ve become of the opinion that he’s an incredible musician but lacking as a curator. Every album has some filler, even concise so-called classics like this one. The lows here are not so low, but there are a lot of uninspiring moments. On the other hand, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain exist, so there’s that. Purple Rain first chord really hits different. One of the most simply powerful starts to a song I can think of. This track really towers head and shoulders above the rest of the album. Fave Tracks: Take Me With U, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain 3.6/5
I like it, had a good enough time listening to it, but I don't quite "get it". Why is this album so highly regarded other than the title track?

Listening notes: Funny that this is the song that comes next after Liv complained about obnoxious guitar solos in Black Sabbath Wow this second song is considerably less good than the first one I would never have thought of recruiting a rabid cat off the street to provide vocals. But I guess I'm not a visionary I can't tell if that noise was prince or his guitar There should be more piano in rock songs Despite what my listening notes might suggest, I really enjoyed this album. Loved the blend of piano and synth with more conventional electric guitar, and the bouncy rhythms. Would be pushing 5 stars if I didn't find some of prince's lyrical delivery a bit annoying. Also Take Me with U. That song is mid as hell. 4.3/5

I’m not usually a Prince fan but this is by far his best album. It’s lush, sultry without getting obscene, varied but not TOO varied. It’s probably the closest I’ll get to actually wanting to listen to Prince outside of the major hits.
i’ve listened to this album once before and was happy to be able to listen to it again. my whole family LOVES prince and i can see why, he does make great music and i enjoyed the album greatly. only four stars because it’s not my usual stuff but for something i wouldn’t normally put on it was great
Really unique sounding, jazzy and catchy with some amazing guitar playing. Purple Rain is an all time song, but I feel like some of the songs here aren't as memorable.

Honestly I expected the entirety of Purple Rain to blow off my socks from hearing the title track alone. Alas, the rest of the album is just nice 80s synth pop. Still a great album, but nothing lifechanging.

First impression: was not impressed with the first half of the album, but the second we reached when doves cry, that track and everything after was a banger. Favourite track: When doves cry One sentence: provocative, fun, a fusion between 80s pop and rock with a splash of funk. Will I revisit? Only the second half of the album yes.

While the hype around Prince is often greater than the reality, looking back at this record reminds you that he was a gifted songwriter and talented musician who had arrived at a distinct pop sound of his own. This record in my mind represented the peak of his craft with obviously strong writing - Darling Nikki, When Doves Cry and Purple Rain still regarded as Classics. I Would Die 4 U, while not a Classic still is a single worth revisiting. Some of this comes off as dated production wise, particularly Let’s Go Crazy. However, at the time, this album was inescapable as it was all over radio and TV. There are a couple of missteps, specifically Computer Blue and The Beautiful Ones, but these are minor nits. 4/5

In the summer of 1984 I was WBC videographer, which meant that every weekday night, I visited a local youth club with a 26”Tv and VHS player. The kids/ youth clubs would get a VHS film from the local shop and I would play the film for them… In about 25 youth clubs, from summer to Xmas, every weeknight, it was Purple Rain, twice a night…. It must be a sign of the times, and quality of the music, that I remain (relatively) sane.

As a Minnesotan, it’s a sacrilege that in not a huge Prince fan. This album is about as good as Prince gets for me. Quite a few winners.

Was wondering if this would be my first 5, and maybe it eventually could be with more listens. Upon my first listen all the way through (finally! I know I know, ridiculous that it hasn't happened until now) there are a couple tracks that hit me hard, and of course "Purple Rain" and "When Doves Cry" are undeniable, but.....not immediately perfect-seeming to me! It's obviously influential, and undoubtedly a ton of fun. A fantastic 4

FINALLY, I’ve been waiting for the generator to give me this one. It’s an excuse to listen to a Prince album. I listened to this on my morning walk, which I feel like wasn’t the best time to do so; it was way too sunny out, and this album is definitely more melancholic. I steered away from him because !. He’s homophobic 2. I feel like a poser when I like extremely mainstream musicians and 3. His extensive discography. But this was great! “Let’s Go Crazy” is the perfect album opener, leading into the vicious “Take Me with U” that keeps spirits high and the energy going. The singles are what people will most know this album for. “When Doves Cry,” the aforementioned opening track, and the towering “Purple Rain.” 9 mins of regret looking back at the way a partner was treated. It’s such an excellent song, and YES, I’m aware everyone knows the song, but it’s getting TikTok-ifed takes every bit of power out of it for me. The album picks you up, knocks you down, helps you back up again, and BAM, it’s “Purple Rain” I love how dated it can sound at times, the thumping drum machine beats that fill the air in most of the songs.

Prince is really really good, I think a lot of the time it’s not quite my thing, but when the hits come in they’re really hard to deny. Purple Rain one of the all time iconic tracks. When Doves Cry also massive. In between the big tunes I feel a bit lost like. 4/5 Best Song: Purple Rain
It’s an insanely good album. I can’t even imagine what it was like being around when it dropped because it’s such a part of my musical world now.
My experience of Prince both in those projects and in listening to him elsewhere is threefold. Firstly, he’s a generational songwriter. He crafts things that are so simple but sophisticated at the time. Secondly, he’s super horny and this comes across as intense sensuality. Lastly, he’s not really one for editing and sometimes things can get a bit baggy. This album hits all those points, great songs, super horny and occasionally a bit overlong. The album itself is probably a 3, but it’s got when Doves cry on it which is. 17/5 so let’s call it a 4 overall

OK, the guy could definitely write good songs and play almost everything amanzingly well but I don't see this as a perfect album. The production and most of the synths are too close to the bad sound of the 80s (that of, well, Bad by Micheal Jackson or Ghostbusters) rather than the cool one (New Order...). There are exceptions though: Nikki is a terrific song and When Doves Cry an almost perfect one. Then there is the title track, which is great although it could be way shorter (is it needed to repeat the refrain like 40 times?)

It's like but it's never quite been love with this one. I get the importance of Prince, and that his legacy and impact was so profound. Some tracks are excellent. I enjoyed this significantly more than Sign of the Times. However, I don't really get the Prince love. This is a good album, but it never reaches the heights that Prince's reputation suggests it should.

Lowest of 4s for me for Purple Rain, second half really picks up and the production is lush throughout. It’s not quite my thing so takes some getting into but I can see why people went mad for this

I'm admittedly not the biggest Prince fan -- I've always found some of the more-eccentric vocals a little grating and the synths/rhythms a little basic even while appreciating the guitar playing. At the same time, I admire his skill and pop star aura. I'd definitely listened to parts of Purple Rain before -- namely "Let's Go Crazy," "When Doves Cry," and "Purple Rain." Let's Go Crazy is probably the gold standard for that sort of 80s party music sound I've always found very mid overall (see also stuff like Everybody Have Fun Tonight, Celebration, Walkin' On Sunshine...). But, if I could have one of those tracks, it would be this one -- love the spoken-word intro, and the closing guitar solo is such an announcement of presence. I should probably mention I've never seen the associated film... but the track order does feel like a filmic progression. Take Me With U through Computer Blue really move from strength to strength. My only stumbling block is "Darling Nikki," which slows things to a screeching halt with an uninspiring sound and storyline and some pretty annoying vocals in the 2nd half. When Doves Cry gets things back on track, even though the main synth backbone rhythm sounds like something from my cheap Casio keyboard. I think the song sounds better in the context of the album. I dig the way I Would Die 4 U transitions seamlessly into Baby I'm a Star, even though the latter is the less-essential version of "Let's Go Crazy" for me. Finally, Purple Rain itself is the album's masterpiece. I always found it a little long in isolation, but as the album's coda it's actually perfect. I will also always think of it in the context of his Super Bowl performance when it rained, only during this song -- still the greatest halftime show ever. I won't say I've been converted into a massive Prince fan, but I can firmly say I'm a fan of this record, a few quibbles aside. I get why it's held in such high regard.

It's not my favorite genre, but I recognize that there are very good songs, indeed better than Purple Rain. In fact "let's go crazy" has the kind of punch that I like.

Iconic album for a reason. The big hits, and obviously the title track, are stone cold classics. I can totally understand the 5/5 ratings, but personally, I don't vibe with the album tracks as much as other people, and they kinda come and go.
Have the authors shoved a soundtrack into the best albums list again!? Okay, we'll forgive them this time, since the story is unusual. Prince was so elated by the albeit modest success of his previous album that he brought a script to Warner Music, confronting their bosses with the following fait accompli: "Either you get me a movie for which I'll write the music, or another label will help me do it." The film starring Prince was more or less made, but it turned out to be a passing one, which can't be said about the album! This is Prince's most pop-oriented record, but he sparkles here — from the hedonistic opening track, the music flows through rich, lustful funk (the "Parental Advisory" sign owes its existence to the lyrics of "Darling Nikki") and screeching synthesizers to the monumental ballad of the same name. Do you think an album can simultaneously contain classic of synth-pop and hair-metal? It can!

I hadn't listened to this album before from start to finish but I'm glad that I have. I get the feeling that if my parents were 20 years younger then I might have been brought up on it. A perfect accompaniment for 80s film, pop culture and fashion. Seamlessly blends electronica, punk, rock, soul, R&B, falsetto-cum-screaming and virtuoso guitar licks. It's not for every day, but when you're in the mood to commit to an hour's worth of air guitar and squealing, look no further.
This album felt almost like watching a film, with its dramatic shifts in style and emotion. Despite being genre-blending, it still holds together with a strong sense of identity. The Beautiful Ones and Purple Rain stood out in particular, both delivering powerful emotional impact and memorable guitar moments.

It was about time to listen to the whole album, and that I did, actually four times in a row. For me, born in the very late seventies, i think Prince was bit too " close" for me to understand or like in my teen years of consuming music. Of course I knew the hit songs, but never really got into listening his full musical repertoire. I remember seeing Purple Rain on telly maybe when I was 12, but I already had moved to more underground taste in music, and in the nineties, 80s was still too near, and not very fashionable. It felt somehow "old" and outdated "disco" for a young girl, who did not want to share a similar taste with the masses. Later on I started to realize his musical geniousness and virtuosity, but somehow I never dug deeper. Glad I did now. What a record, and never before fully realized what an amazing singer he was. Will listen more. Fave song: Take me with U

I was *so* prepared to give this 5 stars. Like "Let's Go Crazy", "Take Me With U", "When Doves Cry", and "I Would Die 4 U" all on one album? What else is there really to say except "yes please!" Unfortunately, then I was confronted with the fact that I don't actually like the title song very much at all, and there's like 9 minutes of that. So alas, Purple Rain falls just short of perfection.

The first couple songs were harder to listen to, eventually I started to really enjoy the album and appreciate the more modern and almost futuristic elements of the album. As for the title track, Purple Rain, on one hand I didn’t care for the chorus, I think maybe because Prince was so influential, his style was copied a lot, so the style just feels boring and has church music connotations, but towards the end of the song, I grew to really enjoy the instrumentals and felt that ot was a powerful ending to the album. Overall, I really enjoyed the more experimental and upbeat parts of the album, and if I listen to it one more time, I think I will love it.
Electric and smooth but made me extremely uncomfy. It’s good until you realize that Prince is quite freaky. My favorite part was the bit at the end of Let’s Go Crazy. Also, the song Purple Rain gets old real fast.
Fun songs with catchy beats. There is two parts to this album to me. The first one is the songs I haven't heard before. I feel like I forget them as soon as they are over, nothing made me want to listen again or made me hum them later in the day. The second part is the hits that me and everyone else in the world has probably heard many times before. Those stuck straight away and now I keep singing purple rain while cooking.

When I first start listening I’m not gonna lie I wasn’t convinced as to why this album is as loved as much as it is but after listening I do have so say that I am impressed. I really did enjoy his rock cuts more than his rnb attempt I felt like those were kinda weak and a bit tacky if I’m honest but computer blue, baby I’m a star and purple rain are some excellent rock cuts and the guitar solos where great. I don’t think it’s the 10/10 people proclaim it to be that for me is when there are no misses or things wrong with an album but it’s pretty darn close

All of the Prince albums on the list have been new to me and all of them have been surprising. Prince makes bold, eccentric pop music. It's funky, it's sexy, it's dirty, it's weird, and it's very cool. I knew some of the hits off this one, but there was plenty to enjoy across the album. As always, Prince's guitar is a highlight. He's a wild, powerful singer, and he's a killer guitar soloist too. This album cover is so good. That shadowy, cinematic photo is great, but I also love the floral border -- it balances the darkness of the main image nicely.

IDK if I should admit this but I've never listened to this album before, and very little Prince in general. I enjoyed this though and will listen again.
8.5/10. Pure fire. This one just hits different—way more energy, way more attitude. It’s bold, dramatic, and doesn’t play it safe at all. Prince is in full control here, and it shows. Not every track is for me, but the highs are really high. Definitely one I respect and actually enjoy coming back to.

Huge fan!
Probably one of the better pop albums of the ‘80s. Its grandiose blending of so many instruments and sounds makes this a well crafted album, producing some of Prince’s best known songs in Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. It does suffer from the classic ‘80s disease of addiction to synth though, and drags a bit on the less remarkable tracks. Enough to hang on for 4 though.
Almost a 5 but the middle few tracks didn’t have quite the same impact as the opening tracks and final few. Still, it’s a brilliant collection of songs. Outstanding songwriting and production that surprisingly doesn’t really feel dated in the same way a lot of 80s records do.
This is an exceptionally well-crafted album with some really good songs, but for whatever reason it leaves me slightly cold emotionally. I really like it, but I don’t love it, and that’s why it doesn’t get the full 5 stars. Like a lot of Prince’s stuff, it’s difficult to genre-type, combining elements of 80s pop, rock, funk and R&B. ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ is a great opener (what an intro that song has too), and ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Purple Rain’ are obviously all-time classics, but most of the rest falls into the ‘very good but not quite great’ category.

Ah yes, Purple Rain. Widely considered one of the best albums of the 1980s and even if all time, it is considered a highly popular and influential classic. The album is very 1980s-sounding, fusing pop, rock, and soul in a way that sounds distinct to all other artists of the time. The production didn't exactly age well, and the lyrics aren't that good, but the songs are hooky and well-written. There are a few legitimately iconic songs on here, and they're every bit as good as you'd expect, but the album isn't quite the phenomenal experience everyone says it is. It's a good pop/rock/soul record, but it's not quite masterpiece level simply because of some bad lyrics("Darling Nikki" has a terrible first verse) and poorly aged production that sounds hella dated now.

This is a great album with some really great songs, but there are a few that hold this back from being a perfect five-star album in my opinion. A couple of them feature a bit of screaming that is pretty harsh and really takes away from the overall enjoyment.

This is hard: there are 2 all-time classic songs on here but the rest of the album is meh. I kinda feel like if this weren’t Prince, and if those 2 songs weren’t so good, this would be a 3, but call it a 3.5 and round up the iconic Prince.

Prince’s guitar playing carries this absolute powerhouse of an album on its back. The first half is weaker than the second, but that is fair enough when the second half has ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Purple Rain’ and several other great songs in a brilliant finish to this classic album.

I like Prince, I don’t love Prince. He was a musical genius and a super talented musician. Like all iconic artists, he had a style and sound unique just to him. Nobody ever heard one of his songs, even if they had never heard it before, and confused it for anyone else but Prince. The way he was layered and stacked his songs between the instruments should be studied in music production classes. He took elements musically and cooked with them like a chef builds flavor. I don’t think this was the best album of the 80’s but it’s a damn good one.
