Prince obviously one of THE guitar greats Let’s Go Crazy - iconic intro and song in general. Very nostalgic for me. Was EXTREMELY hard to resist getting up to dance to this. I had to re play several times after I finished the album because I love it so much OH NO LETS GO CRAZY Take Me With U - another 80s classic iconic synth and violin? accents. Definitely an essential also had to re listen to this The Beautiful Ones - love the beat very 80s with the reverb. On the slower end very beautiful (pun not intended) not so many lyrics and more of Princes ad libs picks up more at the end. Not one of my favourites but still great. Computer Blue - experimental and, well, computery. Crazy guitar work in the middle. not one I’ve particularly listened to before but glad I have now. Could definitely imagine this in some sort of 80s teen movie. Love how the guitar and synth work together in the last quarter Darling Nikki - love the transition from Computer Blue. Not as flashy so to say as the others (obviously still flashy obviously because it’s prince but just not as much as the others). Nvm it picks up towards the end I take it back. Not a song that particularly stands out to me unfortunately though When Doves Cry - BANGER THE GUITAR AT THE BEGINNING instantly recognisable. Definitely busting out the dad dance moves for this one. The layered vocals tickles me I love them. One of the most recognisable synth parts. Longer than I remember it being but even better because it’s a banger. I Would Die 4 You - VERY synth heavy. YET ANOTHER BANGER bro was genuinely cooking so hard with this album. Definitely gonna be stuck in my head for the next few hours Baby I’m A Star - baby he IS a star fr. Drums are THE main character. Woah love the bridge? Synth solo EATS DOWNNN. Interesting panning of voice lines Purple Rain - best till last amirite. Still kinda traumatised by its use in Stanger Things. Never fails to make me tear up on the first chord insane contrast to the first track. A BELTER for sure. GOD ITS SO POWERFUL. IRS SUCH A SHAME OUR FRIENDSHIP HAD TO END PURPLE RAIN PURPLE RAIN. GOOOOODDDDDDD. Absolute masterpiece guitar work amazing as always from prince. If I weren’t in public listening to this rn I would be on the floor in tears. As I can’t do that I will just stare off into space. Whole album hit after hit. (Love the album cover too 🤭 would definitely love to add it to my record collection). 10000% deserves the hype it gets.

All of the Prince albums on the list have been new to me and all of them have been surprising. Prince makes bold, eccentric pop music. It's funky, it's sexy, it's dirty, it's weird, and it's very cool. I knew some of the hits off this one, but there was plenty to enjoy across the album. As always, Prince's guitar is a highlight. He's a wild, powerful singer, and he's a killer guitar soloist too. This album cover is so good. That shadowy, cinematic photo is great, but I also love the floral border -- it balances the darkness of the main image nicely.

I watched a baseball video the other day that talked about underrated players and how there's various levels to being underrated; mostly because a subjective rating like that is really an amorphous concept that is based on overlapping group think or fan base milieu's. The narrator of the video said that "whenever anyone asks who is the most underrated baseball player today, just about everyone says "Jose Ramirez". And they are right. But doesn't that kind of reject the idea of him being the most underrated player if everyone thinks that he is underrated?". It's a funny philosophical conundrum. Prince at some times in my life has been someone who I have actually considered just slightly overrated. I've also thought of him as someone who might be underrated. Most people say "Oh Prince is great" when you bring him up in conversation, and at the same time I feel like I don't hear his name mentioned enough when people talk about the true greats of all time or of an era. There's a reverence around his name but yet I don't see many people mention songs of his outside of "Purple Rain". But back to my baseball anecdote, this could just be the social environments and circles that I'm in. I haven't listened to Purple Rain full through in a while; maybe not since he died, seven days short of a decade today. I was working a double that day and everyone at my workplace was dour and overall visibly down. I worked with a super diverse group of people; Caucasians, African Americans, Africans, Haitians, Indians, and more (majority of these people were a good bit older than me too). And across the board they were all sad and talking about Prince; how he was a larger than life personality. I remember one of my best friends there named Barry- an older African American man who lived a tough life in and out of gangs and crime who turned his life around with martial arts and music, and he was crying at a table because Prince was someone who meant so much to him in that period of his life. I felt bad that he was at work when he learned this news. Listening to this album today was a delight. I've written a handful of reviews the past few weeks about how I've been kind of up and down lately and I listened to this full through between 8 and 9am on a Wednesday morning while I sipped a really good coffee and started to prepare for the work day. The songs were as great as they always are when I hear them. Catchy, fun, bombastic, epic, personal, and fucking cool as hell. I really had extra delight in hearing the title track "Purple Rain" and thinking about all of the new age indie guitarists that imitate this spanky clean guitar tone today. I stared at the album art smiling as I listened to the final two and a half minutes of the song with all of it's gorgeous strings, piano, and guitar parts. I love the whistles.. is this outtro partially recorded live? It sounds kind of corny but I really do feel something special in these last few minutes of the album. As this title track edges near the 7 minute mark it's climax is over and there's this feeling like you're about to see the credits roll of an amazing film that you just finished. But then, at 7:07, you get these super dramatic string parts that pull you away from that serene accomplished feeling. I absolutely love it. Looking at the album art while hearing this part I feel like I understand his music on a whole just a little bit more. This seemingly unimportant little easter egg is such a quizzical inclusion, but maybe that's part of his mystique? He doesn't want to end the album with anything typical or straightforward. He wants you to leave with not only "purple rain puuuurple rain" stuck in you head, but also pondering those mysterious final string parts. 5/5. Amazing album. Amazing album cover, maybe one of the more notable ones that I can think of.

It's Prince. There's no way this isn't getting a 5. It's one ok the best (if not the best) albums of the 80s. Not a single bad track on it.

IDK if I should admit this but I've never listened to this album before, and very little Prince in general. I enjoyed this though and will listen again.

8.5/10. Pure fire. This one just hits different—way more energy, way more attitude. It’s bold, dramatic, and doesn’t play it safe at all. Prince is in full control here, and it shows. Not every track is for me, but the highs are really high. Definitely one I respect and actually enjoy coming back to.

I definitely didn't understand this album when it came out, but I remember it was everywhere. I think that's because it's pretty darn good.

I really love the title song of this album, excited to hear the rest! The other songs are very different I have to say. Fav song is ‘Purple Rain’.

As a fan of other 80s synth pop/rock this album doesn't do much for me. Seemingly universally loved, and with a few undeniable bangers, I found the first half pretty dull and overall pretty meh. Not my cup of tea.

Probably one of the better pop albums of the ‘80s. Its grandiose blending of so many instruments and sounds makes this a well crafted album, producing some of Prince’s best known songs in Purple Rain and When Doves Cry. It does suffer from the classic ‘80s disease of addiction to synth though, and drags a bit on the less remarkable tracks. Enough to hang on for 4 though.

Almost a 5 but the middle few tracks didn’t have quite the same impact as the opening tracks and final few. Still, it’s a brilliant collection of songs. Outstanding songwriting and production that surprisingly doesn’t really feel dated in the same way a lot of 80s records do.

This is an exceptionally well-crafted album with some really good songs, but for whatever reason it leaves me slightly cold emotionally. I really like it, but I don’t love it, and that’s why it doesn’t get the full 5 stars. Like a lot of Prince’s stuff, it’s difficult to genre-type, combining elements of 80s pop, rock, funk and R&B. ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ is a great opener (what an intro that song has too), and ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Purple Rain’ are obviously all-time classics, but most of the rest falls into the ‘very good but not quite great’ category.

Mysterious, electric, defiant, abusive, violent, talented, gifted, genius, sick, twisted, high, delusional, horrible, perverted, legendary man. The quintessential rock star. A songwriter and performer of unmatched capabilities, burning the candle at both ends for his entire adult life until his lavish debauchery finally caught up with him. We don't have to "separate the art from the artist" to enjoy this album. The artist is the art. In fact, what other musician represented the unpredictability of their music? It's a beautiful piece of work, brimming with so much lust that Purple Rain was one of the reasons the Parental Advisory sticker exists. He scared people because his music seemed so exotic and taboo, but also because he was a violent man who should never be alone with someone's teenage daughter. What a force to be reckoned with. "Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down?" Yes. You died in an elevator, buddy. Good job practicing what you preach. Oh, and the music is fine. Not really my thing. But Let's Go Crazy still rocks. Who doesn't love a good guitar solo?

Yeah its as good as people made it out to be

Ah yes, Purple Rain. Widely considered one of the best albums of the 1980s and even if all time, it is considered a highly popular and influential classic. The album is very 1980s-sounding, fusing pop, rock, and soul in a way that sounds distinct to all other artists of the time. The production didn't exactly age well, and the lyrics aren't that good, but the songs are hooky and well-written. There are a few legitimately iconic songs on here, and they're every bit as good as you'd expect, but the album isn't quite the phenomenal experience everyone says it is. It's a good pop/rock/soul record, but it's not quite masterpiece level simply because of some bad lyrics("Darling Nikki" has a terrible first verse) and poorly aged production that sounds hella dated now.

This is a great album with some really great songs, but there are a few that hold this back from being a perfect five-star album in my opinion. A couple of them feature a bit of screaming that is pretty harsh and really takes away from the overall enjoyment.

This is hard: there are 2 all-time classic songs on here but the rest of the album is meh. I kinda feel like if this weren’t Prince, and if those 2 songs weren’t so good, this would be a 3, but call it a 3.5 and round up the iconic Prince.

Beyond the usual hits, this spin made me appreciate the incredible end-of-run of this album, with I Would Die 4 U through to Purple Rain. Wild tempo up to the close.

I was late to the game with this album. I first heard it in my early 20s right around the time I saw an insane prince cover band in Vegas ( purple reign). I was immediately hooked and still play this album often. Musically brilliant, still my favourite prince album.

An absolute classic album from Prince, definitely one of his best. Excellent - I already have this album in my music collection.

I'm really not keen on Purple Rain (the song) and I also don't like When Doves Cry (also the song) but there were a few deeper cuts here that I really enjoyed. I like his upbeat, funky numbers a lot more than the slow, ballady stuff but it's very hard to shake the feeling that overly 80s production gives me so there was always going to be a hard ceiling on this. It's more or less the epitome of the decade.

Prince’s guitar playing carries this absolute powerhouse of an album on its back. The first half is weaker than the second, but that is fair enough when the second half has ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Purple Rain’ and several other great songs in a brilliant finish to this classic album.

Both this album and the movie that accompanied it are classics. Watching the movie and seeing how the soundtrack fits into it adds such a depth to each of the songs. This is one of those albums that I will keep coming back to over and over again the rest of my life.

classic, fire, I like it a lot

I like Prince, I don’t love Prince. He was a musical genius and a super talented musician. Like all iconic artists, he had a style and sound unique just to him. Nobody ever heard one of his songs, even if they had never heard it before, and confused it for anyone else but Prince. The way he was layered and stacked his songs between the instruments should be studied in music production classes. He took elements musically and cooked with them like a chef builds flavor. I don’t think this was the best album of the 80’s but it’s a damn good one.

Prince is a legend for a reason.

overall the album has very catchy music, all of the songs have a really good beat and melody especially purple rain i love the vocals!! the overall vibe of this album however isn’t really my cup of tea and although i genuinely think all the songs are great, they aren’t songs that i would be listening to daily. i rate it a 3/5

Prince was a singular talent. I loved his guitar playing and stage persona. This album had some great tunes, but ultimately it’s not my style. For those whose style it is, it probably gets a 5/5 but alas not for me.

Prince has a quite frankly ridiculous number of albums to explore, and this is probably one of his most broadly appealing ones. Still, despite the highs, there's some tracks that miss a bit for me so I can't quite push this into the 4 territory.

Wildly inventive, creative production choices galore, hugely influential, brilliant musicianship, packed with hooky licks, horny af. And even the cover is iconic. Anything below a five would be a crude underrating. If you were to boil this list down to a selection of 10 albums you must hear before you die, this would have to be on it. Period. If you don’t like Purple Rain, you might want to consult a doctor - just to be on the safe side.

This is not bad album, but it's just not the kind of music I'm into or looking for at the moment. I could see myself liking this album more if I listened to it again at a later time

Prince is Peak, he knows how to do good music. Good album

One of my favourite albums. Every song is a killer, and it has the perfect mix of energy and ballads. As ever with Prince there are incredible guitar solos perfectly mixed in with fantastic vocals and epic songwriting. Love every song but When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy and Darling Nikki are my absolute highlights, along with the legendary title track. 10/10

Very dated, awful keyboard and synths throughout. Trying to sound like the future before the future has been determined has backfired massively here. Great production, some nicely structured songs, but it's a horrid listen to me. Second Prince album and it's two misses for me, I'm not getting the hype.

9/10 Prince had a very special combination of talent, passion and relentless drive that resulted in a musician who's like we may never see again. But what is not often discussed is how experimental and boundary pushing he was. Even his most ardent fans would likely agree that his musical output was not always the most consistent, but a significant factor in that was his determination to try new things, innovate and then move on. In the early 80s, that willingness to experiment meshed brilliantly into a run of albums that, while not always perfect, married his ear for pop music, sense of groove and sublime musicianship to create some truly wonderful music. Purple Rain is not a perfect album, but it's really not too far from it. It opens spectacularly with Prince preaching his philosophy to the listener before launching into one of the greatest ever party tunes. He's funky, cheeky and so much fun to listen to, and somehow the sound he creates sound both ludicrously 80s and fresh as a daisy at the same time. I do feel that things lull a little too much out of the back of such a bombastic opening, but after the slight dip of Take Me With U, we get a run that ramps things up and gives us some experiments in sound and production that must have sounded absolutely mental on a pop record in 1984. As it builds, we get some moments of real quality, culminating in the dirty, sexy grit of Darling Nikki. While I get that some of this first half might not be for everyone, I feel there's a great deal of value in the way he blends that playful production experimentation with his pop music sensibility to make some fantastic moments of avante garde pop. When we reach the second side though, wow. It's just exceptional from start to finish. The musicianship is off the scale, it rocks, it grooves and it sucks you in. There are more hooks than a cloak room, the grooves are infectious, and the little wizard just sucks you in with his boundless energy and charisma. That run of When Doves Cry to Baby I'm A Star is relentless, frenetic and so, so cool, but he doesn't skimp on the quirkiness either. And if that isn't enough, he bows out with THAT title track. It's so utterly glorious, evocative and beautifully put together that I could listen to it again and again without ever getting bored. It may be the greatest ballad of all time and it brings together everything that the album has been building into an utterly perfect culmination. It's pretty breathtaking. So is it a perfect record? No. Is it one of the greatest and most important pop records of all time? Yes. And that pretty much sums up the conundrum that was Prince Rogers Nelson. Let's Go Crazy - What an intro. It's wonderfully grandiose and melodramatic before the song proper kicks in and than it's a perfect slice of funk rock pop in a blend that's so uniquely Prince. It's fun, it's bombastic and it absolutely shifts. Great performances all round, great production and stuffed with oodles of charisma. Quite the way to kick off a record. Oh, and the kid ain't bad on the old six string either. Take Me With U - The tempo drops now and we get a slightly more plodding track that suffers a little from following the balls to the wall opener. There are some nice melodic moments in there and some of the strings are really nice, but it is a touch pedestrian. The Beautiful Ones - The pace is still slow now, but there's more to this. It has a nice edge of experimentation to the production and Prince carries the song so well with his vocal delivery and there are some great melodic moments in there. We get a pretty broad range from his vocal too, which is pretty damn impressive. I love some of the synth work on this track and it all builds to a great climax. Computer Blue - The pace and groove picks back up again now and we get a bit more electronic experimentation in the production. This has got a slightly creepy cultish robotic feel to it, in no small part thanks to Wendy and Lisa's intro. But it's a really cool song and it changes lanes quite significantly half way through. Prince was never afraid to take his own path and this is a lovely example. Great musicianship of course, but also an interesting flow and narrative. Darling Nikki - And we flow straight into another slightly experimental and brilliantly grubby little song. This is the song that triggered the movement against explicit content in songs and resulted in the parental advisory stickers coming into use. It's a solid song though that's got a great vibe, some solid playing and so much suitable grit and drive. Horny, filthy and excellent, with some backwards masking at the end about Jesus. So, so Prince. When Doves Cry - From the opening burst of guitar, this song just rips. The beats kick, the melodies are great, the vocal performances are excellent. It's still got an experimental edge to the production, but it's so catchy too. It builds as it goes, but never loses its thread and it's got some great guitar work towards the end too. What an absolutely exceptional song. I Would Die 4 U - A song that simmers and broods. It's so well produced and again has some really great melodic hooks. The synth work is urgent and engaging and Prince weaves this fantasticly layered composition out of relatively few elements. It's a great vibe and another incredibly solid track, that runs straight on to... Baby I'm A Star - This grabs moments from the rest of the album and deftly brings them together. It's another incredibly infectious and engaging song. There's a lot going on here and it pretty brilliantly captures the energy, fun and frantic nature of a Prince live performance. It's got so much groove and talent in the performances and it's leaking charisma out of every pore. Brilliant stuff. Purple Rain - The big one. In for a shout as the greatest ballad of all time, it's dramatic, emotionally delivered and absolutely stuffed full of charisma. The performances across the board drip quality and sell the song perfectly. Excellent string arrangements, an exceptionally evocative vocal performance and then that guitar solo. It's rare that a song lasts over 8 minutes and has me almost immediately reaching to skip it back to the beginning, but this is one. It really does earn every accolade it's ever received. I'm not sure it's possible to close an album more effectively and beautifully than this.

Overall a solid album, but I was not super into some of the "filler" tracks. And maybe it's my fault for listening to this with my 16 year old in the car, but I was clutching my pearls a little bit.

This is one of those classic albums that I never really got into. I knew the big songs (When Doves Cry and Purple Rain) and I think I somewhat knew some others (Let's Go Crazy and maybe I Would Die 4 U). The sound is definitely 80's and I don't think it's aged as well as some other music. Totally recognize that he's an icon and I think he's a very talented guitarist/etc, but not my thing.

It might not be a perfect album, but it is a perfect Prince album, and that counts for something.

Ok. Ok. I was standing on my deck outside my house with this cassette tape. I hated modern pop like this. I was young. I pulled out the tape and destroyed it. Felt good. Probably 40 years later now. Prince is gone. I recognize his talent But this album. It’s fine. There are three fantastic songs. Then there is some filler. And a few other decent songs. It’s creative. The guitar playing is great. This is not a five star album. I will have to go with 4. Purple rain alone. But those filler songs really drag this one down.

I thought Prince was really experimenting with his vocals. He put everything into the songs. The lyrics were nice and the guitar riffs were amazing.

Som total 80´s. Batida balada c/ letra desafiadora e atrevida p/época. Crítica a Hollywood, gostei do seu lado witty. No entanto... too slow p/mim. Banger Purple Rain e sexual Darling Nikki foram os highlights. A última recordou-me a Judge Judy do Tyler,The Creator(2024), poderá ter sido inspiração perhaps. Nada muito memorável, wouldn´t re-spin.

this is a classic that ive never dedicated the time to properly listen to; you see, i say i like movies and I havent seen citizen kane first few tracks are a bit of a weak start but from the beautiful ones it gets wild wild, it was great when the synth and his voice kinda mixed and followed eachother phrasings but from there the masterful guitar playing and vocal performances just steal the focus of attention on the next few songs i feel like the singles are the weakest part of the album they feel like watered down for mass appeal, understandable being a soundtrack for a movie, cash rules, but i think i will find the better prince outside of this project imma go against the waves here because, as a whole, the album didnt do much for me

This album was inescapable back in '84. 6 consecutive months at #1 on the charts, heavy rotation on MTV, blockbuster movie, Prince was everywhere, and with good reason, this album kicks ass. Probably in the top 25 of this entire list. Definitely in the top 25 best albums of the 80's. And while I'm throwing hyperbole around like manhole covers, Prince was one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century.

I’ve always heard this called one of the best soundtracks ever to one of the worst movies ever. I’ve never seen the movie, but this album is incredible. So many hits, so much funk, such impressive writing…. It’s so well executed all around. It’s Prince at his best.

Underrated guitarist IMO. He was a great singer/songwriter. Not really a fan of much of his stuff, but the title track, "Purple Rain" is an undeniable masterpiece, "When Doves Cry" another top track. A lot of people think it's a time warp, but I think his music is still relevant, just not popularised like some other junk they slap all over TikTok. Shame really, he deserves more recognition for this album.

There is just absolutely no way that this can be argued to not be one of the greatest pop albums ever made. Jam packed full of the funkiest and grooviest beats and hooklines of its era, this album absolutely deserves every bit of praise it has ever been given. The small elements of synthpop keep it feeling really fresh, and obviously Prince himself is an absolutely generational vocalist, and obviously the very witty and sexual lyricism is always a very prominent element of his music that is on form here too.

Not a Prince fan at all but I have this album bought cheaply at a charity shop only because it is regarded as a significant album in the history of modern music. As Prince albums go I must agree with the majority that this is his best and even I found myself giving a slight head nod or bum wiggle when listening. To elicit this movement from me is quite rare so an extra star for that. 3/5 21/3/26

It took me a little while to get into this properly, but once I was locked in its really good. While its his most successful, I don't know if its his best. Doves Cry is so good, as is the titular track. The synths, pop vibes, and funk in it all are so fundamentally Prince.

Listened in the car and in Costco. Listening to this album is like a religious experience. It starts strong and builds up to the title track at the end. That ending track is maybe the single best song to come out of the 80s. Amazing album.

This album can not be overrated. Each track is phenomenal. While side B is jam packed with hits side A offers great songwriting musicianship and interesting production

4.1 I gave this one many listens, and I'm glad I did. Firstly, I absolutely love the title track, it's been one of my favourite songs for a long time. Yet I've never been able to enjoy anything else by him. I've tried this album once or twice over the years but could never dig it. I really disliked Sign of the Times when it popped up on this list. But given this is meant to be one of the all time greats, and I've previously had an aversion to it, I told myself I couldn't rate it until after 5 listens. It's definitely a grower. At first it sounds way too 80s, quite dated. Self indulgent in places. But let that wave wash over you and look at what's underneath. His guitar work is amazing. The songs here are exciting and interesting, with a lot of depth. Hell, even the weakest track, Darling Nikki, goes out with a black metal-esque double kick drum filling out the background. Is it one of the best albums of all time? No. It hasn't aged spectacularly, and other than the title track I still don't think anything really holds up as an all time classic. But it is a very, very good album, once you get over the datedness. It makes me wonder how different all my ratings would have been if I had given every other album on this list 5 listens, but sadly man is not immortal. Glad I gave this one the time regardless.

Prince is a legend and if anyone in pop history is a "musical genius," it's him. In the past I've (wrongly) considered him overrated. What's not to love about this extremely weird and catchy album?

Jeg klarer ikke å la være å se for meg folk i 30-årene som spiller high school-studenter og danser og synger eller er med i montages. I utgangspunktet liker jeg mange slike filmer, men det er sjeldent jeg setter på musikken uten filmen (med Simple Minds som et hederlig unntak). Men Prince er Prince, og det er jo fengende og bra popmusikk. Bare ikke noe som fenger meg. Det ble ikke denne gangen jeg skulle forstå Prince heller.

Hvis Beatles fant opp / populariserte poppsychadelicaen, så perfektsjonerte Prince den her. Dette albumet er så latterlig bra. Kanskje tidenes beste avslutter også?

I've tried SO many times in my life to appreciate Prince's music and this is the first time I've liked it at all which is wild because now I really like it.

Geezer is swag personified, album is a touch 80's for me but you can tell it's fucking great still.

Two Prince albums in the same week. I think this is his best album and his most well known, but mostly because there aren't AS MANY just really weird songs on there where it feels like you just need to spray him with the hose to calm down. Don't get me wrong, The Beautiful Ones and Darling Nikki are both weird. He has this tendency to just keep wailing about how he wants to get married, and from his previous albums, it's probably only because he wants to have sex with the girl. This one is no different. She's beautiful, he loves her, and then starts whining and screaming because she doesn't want him. Darling Nikki is basically about an escort that he picked up while she was masturbating in the hotel lobby. Lovely. So if I ignore how fucking weird these two songs are or just forget that I know English, the album is great. Prince's singles are absolutely incredible. Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, I would Die 4 U are great songs and they show that he does make music when he has adult supervision to prevent him from coming across as a weird sex offender. Just hard to judge it fairly because I guess i'm just not a Prince fan simply because he really creeps me out with his lyrics. I will say this is his best album and the fact that only 2 of 9 songs are creepy is a big improvement for him.

Boy, I am going to catch some heat for this. I’ve already listened to this album a couple times before and I didn’t feel inclined to make listen #3. I think he’s talented as a guitarist but I just can’t get the hype. I’ve made good faith efforts listening to his albums and it’s not for me.

Groovy! Great first introduction to Prince.

I’m probably missing some cultural context, but I don’t really understand the universal acclaim for this album above other Prince albums. I know it’s technically a movie soundtrack and at times you can tell. Some undeniable stone cold classic tracks and some great grooves but definitely some less interesting moments too.

Obviously it’s a big influential record, and there are some great songs on it, but a lot of it feels stuck in it’s era instead of timeless. Also not a fan of prince going shriek mode

This album is pop perfection. It’s better than thriller as far as cohesiveness is concerned. The production is experimental and lush and it works. There isn’t any album really that sounds like purple rain. This is peak Prince. Classic/10

When Doves Cry is one of the best songs of all time.

Purple Rain is as energetic as popular music gets; hearing "Let's Go Crazy" for the first time was probably the quickest an album ever clicked with me, and Prince rides that dangerous high through adventurous melodies, with a voice that loves loudly and kills softly, all the way out into one of the most powerful rock ballads of all time. Favourite tracks: "Let's Go Crazy", "Take Me With U", "Purple Rain"

Love how the album began. Like the upbeat vibe and guitars. Favs included 'let's go crazy', 'I would die for you', and 'purple rain'. Had to listen to these tracks a 2nd time they were so good. Highly recommend watching his 2007 superbowl halftime show as well.

It was drawn for me after Bowie and unfortunately it disappointed me. I expected something less pop and less monotonous, although Purple Rain is iconic. 6/10

Clearly a well crafted album. Each song in isolation may not fully land but there is an overarching concept and quite a lot of variety that makes me feel like there is an architectural layer to this album beyond just a collection of songs. I'm holding back from a 5 since this isn't fully landing for my musical taste, but I can appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship that went into this.

You know, they apparently sought out the rights to use 'Stairway to Heaven' to cap off Stranger Things. It would've been epic but it's perfectly fitting and awesome that they ended up with Purple Rain instead. I'm just going to say that Prince's guitar playing -- wide, wide vibrato, sweeping bends and crazy divebombs, on top of all the speed and expression happening, plus that super crunchy fuzz tone -- is absolutely peak form here. This is EVH-level stuff and Prince is deeply underappreciated by a lot of folks in this regard. Anyway, enough from me: 5/5 go listen. The second side alone is an all-timer. First side's a pretty good bonus.

Defined a generation. Every Gen X had this cassette tape and could sing along with most of the album. Listening to it today brought back a lot of nostalgia. It was pretty far ahead of its time both lyrically and musically.

Sometimes it just works (When Doves Cry, Purple Rain) and other times it feels like musical whack a mole where Prince is directing his not inconsiderable talents in a thousand directions, screeching, singing, synth noises, general camp 80s pop done at 100 miles an hour. He was a generational artist but an acquired taste and it can feel like hard work at times. But when it’s good, it’s really good.

I do appreciate the full throttle and atmospheric vibe he brings. The last album I complained about the excess of musicality that blew the good away in the "noise" this does not appear on this album. I still believe that Prince is a master at musical craft and enjoy that he brings his unique passion to the music. It's vibrant and interesting and for a pop classic it ticks those boxes strongly. I have grown in my liking of prince as it is standout album today happily zips through without being a chore. Just shame it's not really my style but I appreciate the merit.

I can see why this is top pop music. It's interesting, varied, and musically complex. Upbeat but still has depth. There are a couple of tracks that are peak 80's pop music and forever cemented as classics. My issue with this is purely one of taste. I'm just not into this hyper camp, synth pop sound. It's too upbeat and polished for me. Certainly don't begrudge it when it's done this well but not something I'll be listening to by choice.

Aww. My first Prince album. The ladies love him, though I'm not sure why, given he looks like an emaciated goblin. I laugh at those people who claim 'that solo' is the greatest guitar solo of all time. But credit for playing most of the instruments on most of your songs yourself - that's a hell of a lot better than being able to dance and mime. But I've never liked Prince. Don't like his voice,.don't like the reliance on pansy funk. I've maybe heard less than ten songs from him throughout my life - a tiny fraction of the prolific guy's output - and have liked none of them. Some of those are on this album. Which I am about to listen to, in full, for the first time. While it's true the sound is horribly dated and exceedingly 80s, it's very well produced. The opening track is cheesy as hell with a cringe spoken intro, but solid guitar outro. The second song is almost good - ruined by poor vocals and out of place violin parts, a shame because the underlying strings and melody are solid. I knew the Hoffs version before hearing this. The third is more cheese, with lots of silly vocal yelps, spoken parts, and cheesy synths. I was ready to hate Computer Blue after the first minute, but the last half saves it. The next track confirms that the lad was indeed a dirty little goblin, but he sings it well. When Doves Cry I already knew and never cared for. I Would Die 4 U is fine - again I knew it from the Hoffs cover. Next one is throwaway, and Purple Rain makes sense as the closer but is one I knew and again never thought much of. It's fine, overrated. So, done. It's fine, overrated sums up the album. People love it and hold it in high esteem and that's cool. I never grew up with it and was always a bigger Jackson and Madonna fan. I don't doubt the lad's creativity and talent, but his music (hear at least) doesn't speak to me in any meaningful way. It's just another pop album from a time gone by - a time I lived through - but which shows all the hallmarks of how silly that time often was.

It's nice music I like most of the songs just fine, you Can tell he was a very creative and talented artist, there are touches of hard rock with lots of guitar and even disco music. It's an eclectic álbum. However none of the songs really got to me. 3,75/5.

One of the greatest albums of all time, maybe? How the hell did Prince manage to put so much in there without it feeling like too much? Despite all the directions this album goes musically it still feels focused.

1. Let’s Go Crazy - Peak classic. Gotta say though that the opening didn’t really connect with me, but overall incredibly catchy and fun song. 10/10 2. Take Me With U - Sound like a basic Prince song until the last minute where it begins to feel like sweet song of wanting to be with someone you love. 8.5/10 3. The Beautiful Ones - Very touching song that represents the strong emotions of wanting to know if who you admire really wants you and how great it feels to get the question off of your chest. 9/10 4. Computer Blue - For a song that’s mostly guitar solo (reminiscent of Pink Floyd) I still enjoyed the vocals and everything else. 8/10 5. Darling Nikki - Wasn’t ready for that intro at all. Definitely different from every other song so far, I guess he can be a bit of freak. Still incredible song though and found myself bopping my head. The end is certainly something odd as well, and yes, I listened to it backwards. 7.3/10 6. Sweeping ballad that really really represents his style on this album. 8/10 7. I Would Die 4 U - Solid song, the end is especially catchy. Transitions incredibly into the next track. 7.5/10 8. Baby I’m a Star - Upbeat composition and great message about how he’s a star not in his life but for his love. I really love all of the vocals, both Prince and the backups. 9.2/10 9. Purple Rain - Incredible ballad and a great way to end the album. Prince mentioned in an interview that purple rain is when there’s blood in the rain and that the red + blue = purple. The song is about being with the one you love most even in the end of the world. 9/10 Overall: 8.5/10. I remember my English teacher mentioning Prince and how she listened to him as a kid and began to look at the lyrics and see how freaky they were. I can see what she means a bit, but overall these tracks are very sweet and emotional which gives this album a good score.

I listened to two first Prince albums beforehand as I was interested in the fact that he basically recorded all music by himself. Unfortunately, the compositions and songs itself don't sit with me well.

This made me want to listen to more prince. And purple rain definitely hits after listening to the full album

Favorite tracks: Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, I Would Die 4 U, Purple Rain Endlessly excellent, Prince and The Revolution are firing on all cylinders here. Purple Rain is as playful and party-centric as it is sensual and romantic, and dear god do his insane screamed vocals give me goosebumps.

I remember trying to listen to Prince when I was younger and not liking what I heard. My dad would make references to Purple Rain all the time, so I thought it had to be good, surely. With this relisten, ~15 years later, I was hoping it was just my crappy teenage taste. I still don't find myself liking this unfortunately. I have to stan this icon on paper, at least, if not by ear.

I thought that Prince was overrated, but I don't think same way anymore. This is pop album with pop sounds but with creativity and integrity of a rock album. This is pop music I knew existed somewhere, but never couldn't find. I dunno if I should rate it 4 or 5... Nah, I'll go with 5, because so far it's a peak pop music I ever listened too. Best tracks: I Would Die For You and especially Darling Nikki (for a song itself, but double bass, lyrics about masturbation and annoying Tipper Gore makes this song even better)

Me gusta el álbum porque tiene un sonido muy de los 80 que es llamativo y mantiene bien la mística de la época. También me parece interesante cómo mezcla estilos sintiéndose natural, no forzado. Sin embargo, escuchándolo completo, siento que hay muchos altibajos: hay canciones muy buenas que destacan muchísimo y son las que terminan empujando el éxito general del disco, mientras que otros temas pasan más desapercibidos. En conjunto, el álbum funciona y es disfrutable, aunque para mí se vuelve un poco repetitivo en el clima, el tópico y el sonido, y por eso no me resulta tan parejo de principio a fin.

Sorry not sorry to the Prince lovers, but this guy is a wanker. Ok, sure, he was a talented musician, but I never have and never will enjoy his style of music. I never listened to this album in full before and I never will again, I cringed so much during Darling Nikki. What a dirty hornbag.

Imagining Prince laying down some sick guitar solos right now... This record fits itself right into the 80s canon. Those synths, guitars, and reverb drums pair well with Prince's heartfelt singing. His vocal deliveries give off a joyful, almost manic vibe to the songs. Plus extra point for "Purple Rain" as it sounds so much like an 80s "Mayonaise". (4-4.5)

Very funky. A few songs that are great, but purple rain… absolutely beautiful.

The songs on this album have that typical 80s synthy sound with the added effect of sounding what I would describe as grand (it is a soundtrack for a movie, after all). Funnily enough, I was already familiar with "Darling Nikki" because I had first heard the Foo Fighters cover it before listening to the original (I like the extra instrumentation on this song). Overall, I'm generally not into this style of music but I can appreciate why it's on this list. Prince's singing voice and skilled use of guitar, drums, and synths elevate the songs and make them stand out from all of the other stereotypical 80s fare (particularly the guitar work). "Purple Rain" is a beautiful closer to the album, especially the ending minute of the song. I'm rating it a 2 simply because it's just not my thing, though.

best pop album ever recorded, maybe best album of all time?

Coming into this reasonably familiar with some of the popular songs (Let’s Go Crazy, When Doves Cry, and Purple Rain), so I was keen to understand the grip this album has on many, it has over a 90 on this website after all. The album starts off with crazy energy, but takes a much softer turn with the next 2 tracks, with The Beautiful Ones being a particular standout, especially the final 1:45 or so. When Doves Cry, as mentioned before, is one of the standouts. Everyone knows it. It’s a classic for a reason, that chorus is so damn catchy. The lack of bass is hardly noticed, something that continues to amaze me. Baby I’m A Star is another banger for me, continuing that infectious energy I felt right from when I pressed play. Then of course, the closer, Purple Rain, is the best song on the album. It’s no debate, it’s also probably one of my favourite songs from the 80s. What it lacks in infectious rocking energy, it makes up for in heart and fucking great guitar work. I get it now. What an album. A classic.

No listen required - this album is a 5 all day long - likely top 20 album all time for me.  Enjoyed it very much back in the day: when Doves Cry first came on the radio, could not get enough. And Purple Rain as closer? Please - top 10 songs of all time. The passion, emotion and energy put into this album is amazing. This was Prince at his absolute best, IMO he never again matched it. 5/5

It’s one of the best albums of all time. It’s amazing.

Some very good songs-When Doves Cry, Take Me With U, Let‘s Go Crazy and Purple Rain- and a bunch of fairly dated, cheesy 80s tracks outside of these. Not a masterpiece, as many say, but worth a listen for the singles.

I was was looking forward to hear this as I love the singles and yeah, the singles were a welcome respite from otherwise uninspiring tracks. It's a good album, but not great.

This album reeks of sweaty, sticky and clammy sex. Prince mix of r&b, funk and pop is so well put together that it actually creates a music genre of its own. We call that Prince.

Perhaps the hottest take of all but Prince's voice drives me nuts in a bad way sometimes. After talking to some friends after this generator gave me "Sign O' The Times" I do agree that Prince is more of a "Greatest Hits" artist rather than one who creates incredible front-to-back albums. Although I think Purple Rain is about 60% bangers, which in my opinion encompasses "Take Me With U" as well as all 4 of the final tracks on this record. Better than Sign O The Times but I think I'm definitely not a Prince fan overall

Har aldri klart å komme inn i denne plata. Det er noe med produksjonen til Prince som kler andre plater bedre enn denne som skal være litt mer storveis. Det blir episk, men også flatt.

Skjønner veldig godt klassiker statusen. Er derimot en sjanger og artist jeg hører sjelden på. Bla på grunn av vokalen og imaget til Prince. Slitsom type.

Prince Mild < Prince Sykt kjedelig. Æ tar med mæ Computer Blue, da den ga litt DEVO-vibes, men resten treng æ aldri høre igjen. Sterk toer.

I think I prefer Prince as a collaborator rather than their solo work. It's definitely not boring though!

Si lo puntuo del 1 al 5 es un 4.50/5 porque hubieron partes como el final de Beautiful Ones que no me gusto ,o When The Doves Cry que me pareció un poco mid para estar casi al final del álbum ,es buenas pero no se compara con las demás. Purple Rain es el mejor clímax para un álbum ,quizá se merezca el 5 solo por eso pero voy a ser más quisquillosa.

Iconic, great listen

This would be a 5 if it had been recorded either 10 years earlier or 10 years later. Those 80s drums and excessive chorus bring it down a notch.

It’s not my favorite type of music, at least not in this moment. The album is really old, the songs are good and my English sucks but I think the lyrics are about optimism, love, happiness, etc.

going into this album I think I'd give it a 4 based on reputation alone, I've heard it before but never sat down and listened to it. Honestly, it was pacing at a 3 for me until the last song, Purple Rain, and then I listened to that song 3 times and decided to revisit the whole album again. This is the first time since Lark's Tongues in Aspic that I have immediately relistened to an album. and it's a 5, even the weaker songs are punched up because Purple Rain is an all time banger.

There's not a single misplaced track on this album and you can feel the thought and detail that went into it.

Just brilliant. I tried to tell myself that I was too cool for this and that I disliked the poppy mainstream appeal of it and preferred his more experimental records.. but this is just so good. It does feel a tiny bit less ambitious maybe, but the execution is so spot on. The popular singles are of course amazing, but so many of the less recognisable tracks are really beautiful too. I'll even forgive him his usual ott horniness

I wish we'd seen past all the controversy that is Prince back in the 80's. This album was amazing! Even though this breaks the "no soundtracks" rule, I'm glad it's on the list. The usage of backmasking and environmental sounds is interesting. It's racy enough to be titillating, but not so much that it feels dirty, even with "Darling Nikki". My Rating: 5/5

amazing, transcends genre.

Wow, what a voice. It's pop adjacent but something entirely more, which is good, because I tend not to enjoy pop. There's so much power and emotion in these songs.

It's Prince
