Maybe I’m just not fancy but it’s so boring

Hmm. I enjoy the basslines, the drums are fun and upbeat, the piano is alright... But I have always disliked the sound of the brass section of me in these big band recordings, they feel so abrasive to me and at such odds to the rest of it. It's the bit I end up concentrating on and it ruins the whole thing for me. The slow songs didn't have it, but the drums weren't as fun either.. not for me.

The Atomic Mr Basie. Jazz album, not my style but interesting layers of sound. I enjoyed after supper as it was calmer than the rest of the album and had less aggressive trumpets! Piano intro on whirly bird was good. You can tell it’s from 1958 it feels like it would be played on a record at a fancy dinner party.

I have no idea what to expect. Ok. The musicianship here is 10/10. But I don’t enjoy this sort of big band jazz. I would probably love this in a live setting. Too tedious as the soundtrack for my afternoon walk. 2/5 to rate it in line with albums I’ve felt the same way about.

Allez, on continue de cocher les cases de ce foutu bouquin. Et aujourd'hui, on plonge dans le formol. Pardon, je voulais dire : on plonge dans le jazz. Enfin… le jazz ? Disons "un" jazz, celui des grands orchestres, des costards-cravates impeccables, des sourires ultra-bright et des musiciens qui jouent assis. On commence directement par la note et ce sera un trois sur cinq, soit la note de l'élève appliqué mais sans génie. La note du "fait le boulot, mais ne nous emmerde pas avec une quelconque aspérité". La note de ce qui est compétent, mais désespérément… sage. Et c'est exactement le problème de cet Atomic Mr Basie. L'ironie de ce titre… "Atomic", il n'y a rien d'atomique là-dedans, rien qui explose, rien qui irradie. C'est un pétard mouillé, une bombe à eau. Je vais être honnête, ce genre de jazz, pour moi, c'est l'antichambre de la mort par ennui. C'est le "jazz à la papa" dans toute sa splendeur, le genre de disque que ton dentiste passe en boucle dans sa salle d'attente pour que tu oublies qu'il va te charcuter la gencive. Le genre de musique que tu entends dans un hall d'hôtel de luxe où le personnel te juge parce que tu ne portes pas de mocassins à glands. C'est propre, c'est lisse, c'est tellement bien élevé que ça en devient suspect. Et le premier truc qui frappe en 2025, c'est le son. Mais quelle purge ! L'album a incroyablement mal vieilli, techniquement parlant. La dynamique est aux abonnés absents, ici tout est tassé, compressé, ça manque d'air, ça manque de coffre. On parle d'un Big Band, merde ! Je veux que ça me saute à la gueule. Je veux sentir le souffle des cuivres, la vibration de la basse, la caisse claire qui claque. Là, j'ai l'impression d'écouter un MP3 encodé en 64kbps sur une enceinte Bluetooth à 10 balles. C'est plat, où est la puissance "atomique" promise ? Elle a dû rester coincée dans le magnéto de 1957. Un bon gros coup de polish, un remastering digne de ce nom, ce ne serait pas du luxe. Parce que oui, musicalement, derrière ce voile terne, ça joue. Évidemment que ça joue. C'est Count Basie, c'est le "New Testament" band et les arrangements de Neal Hefti sont millimétrés. Ça swingue poliment, chaque section est parfaitement en place. Les musiciens sont des tueurs, le Count, avec son piano minimaliste, place ses petites notes avec une économie légendaire. Tout ça, c'est "bien". Mais "bien", en 2025, ça ne suffit plus. Je cherche la faille, la sueur, le danger. Je cherche ce qui fait que le jazz de Mingus, de Miles (période électrique) ou de Coltrane te retourne les tripes. Ici, rien, c'est du jazz de smoking, c'est du jazz qui ne veut déranger personne. C'est le jazz parfait pour un film de Blake Edwards. C'est le jazz qui a donné envie à des générations entières de ne pas écouter de jazz. Les morceaux s'enchaînent avec une compétence somnifère. "Kid from Red Bank" ? Oui, ça balance. "Li'l Darlin'" ? OK, c'est suave, parfait pour rouler une pelle à ta promise au bal de fin d'année 1958. Mais l'ensemble manque cruellement de passion, de folie, de vie. C'est un exercice de style, brillant, peut-être, pour l'époque. Mais aujourd'hui, ça sonne comme une musique d'illustration pour une pub de bagnole. Je comprends que cet album ait sa place dans l'histoire. Il représente l'apogée d'un certain style de Big Band, juste avant que le rock'n'roll ne vienne tout balayer et que le jazz lui-même ne parte dans des directions bien plus excitantes. Mais le "1001 Albums" est censé être un guide des albums qu'il faut écouter avant de mourir. Celui-ci, franchement, vous pouvez le laisser de côté. Sauf si vous ouvrez un cabinet dentaire. Un gros pétard mouillé, je vous dis.

Overall, this was a pretty chill album, nothing too exciting, but I think that because it's a bit old and because it sounds like it's for the background of an intense movie, it just sounds like an old movie is playing in the background.

This all darts round rather nicely, no melodies though. Hard to rail against such an innovator so will simply say its not for me and leave it at that!

Favorite song(s): None stood out to me When would I listen to it: Never, I usually listen to instrumental when needing to focus but this wasn’t conducive for that. More of a fun, energizing instrumental which just isn’t for me. Sounded great though!

1958? BIG Band? Jazz? Three strikes and you'rrrrre out! I don't get jazz. I can't even pretend to like it, it can't be on in a room without it driving me up a wall. The randomness and the repetition, the unnecessary solo's, the horns that just won't stop. Boring. Just not my thing. It's obviously popular with most tracks having over 1M plays. A few have 5, 18 and 8M plays, that's impressive. I don't understand it, but it's impressive. I got thru this one quickly. Not a single song I'd listen to twice. And to believe there was a time when this was super popular blows my mind. I'm sure he's great at what he does so I'll give it 2 stars.

I feel bad giving this only 2 stars as I normally like Basie. This is low production quality and mixed horn forward, so it doesn't sound like a balanced orchestra.

An electric album title. A nice orchestral album that would probably a great live show. There are also a few tracks in here that would fit well for cocktail hour background music. Didn't mind it all all for a Monday morning. Not much else to say!

Count Basie is a legend. And a power. I know he's powerful because this music sounds like every other big band music Ive heard. Bombastic and unpleasant. I need someone to give me a better Basie album. 2/5

Came out in late 50s. Thought rock roll would have killed this. Too bad it didn’t. Nothing atomic about it. My grandmother would have nodded off to this with no trouble

just not my cup of tea. very frenetic/shaky, the whole album made me anxious except the last track. struggling to separate it from modern contexts where it has been co-opted like burlesque dance, cartoons, film noir, dance classes I took as a kid. this is one where maybe you just had to be there

4/10 The best jazz album I've heard so far, which ain't to say a lot. If perhaps we could remove the BLAST of the brass, I could tolerate it more, but there it is. Mostly reminds me of Police Squad and the intro music to all those 60s comedies on when I was a kid, so not all bad.

2.3 I appreciate some of this music needs to be on here but it's just really not for me. Suits being a forgettable soundtrack to a random 60s movie to be honest.

I'm going to say this is fine. Jazz isn't typically my thing, so I wasn't surprised that this album didn't exactly make me excited. There's good musicianship here. However, there is a lot of that short, abrupt staccato that I just didn't personally enjoy all that much. I would say it was overused. Brass instruments are powerful, and are very harsh to listen to when they sound shrill. Overall, appreciate it as a band kid. Disliked it as a person who doesn't exactly love jazz.

While I respect Count Basie's contributions to music, this was an album I just couldn't really get into. Probably a genre thing, since brass-focused big bands don't entice me all that much. I generally find the style uninteresting. There were some good moments here, and I can't say it was bad music. The compositions really showed how talented the players were. Even so, I'm not really tempted to listen to it again and I didn't feel like it was a great album. Comparing it to some of the other albums I've gotten in the same general vein, this was one of my least favorite. I'll give it credit for what it did well, but can't personally rate it very high. Overall: 2/5

It was perfectly fine background music. It would go well in a Vegas show. I would never put it on though.

I accept this is good big band/swing. However I do not like big band/swing. The first few songs I thought were funky and then it just… kept… going. And no vocals!! I can’t.

I think the level of enjoyment for this album is hugely based on where your exposure to jazz begins. If you’re a fan of “traditional”, big band jazz you’ll probably love this as an innovative release that came at the end of that era. But if you prefer the shift to more modern styles of jazz such as cool or modal jazz, this becomes a bit more meh. I’m in the latter category.

Oh, Jazz you magnificent bastard. I knew 30 seconds into this album that it wasn’t for me. Great individual players. Anti synergy. I did like Flight Of The Foo Birds though.

Wait…just a second…pardon me…let me just…okay - got my white socks on, rolled up the legs of my blue jeans, white t shirt sleeves once turned, hair just so, slipped in to my black loafers…but…I think this foo bird has flown, something feels splanky about this music in this time.

Sinatra/big band/bluesy Jazz is just lost on me. I can hardly distinguish one song from another let alone an album or artist. I fuck with New Orleans style Mardi Gras-parade jazz, or someone going absolutely nuts on a horn but all that is to say I can’t even fairly rate this because my brain just doesn’t decipher it the way I do with other musical genres. It’s a 2 for me because it was fine I guess but it could have been amateur as hell and I wouldn’t know the difference. It’s a me problem.

Boring! Just trad jazz from Mr Basie. I'm totally ready to be told that this is revolutionary, the first use of triplets in recorded jazz history, a powerful evocation of the era or whatever, but it just sounds like a few guys tooting out some standards to me. Sorry about that.

Not that that's bad, but there's only so much you can do while staying within the bounds of the genre. I'm not convinced that bounds are very big. It's good, but not great.

This music does not resonate with me at all. I enjoy jazz, swing, and big band, but while this album isn't difficult to appreciate, it makes me feel anxious and never fully connects with me.

Big Band und somit nicht meine Lieblingsmusik. Solide gespielt.

I won't say it's outright bad but this isn't for me. Best track was probably Flight of the Foo Birds. I liked some of the more downbeat stuff towards the end.

I feel like I’m listening to the chips a hoy ad from the 90s. Like, I get this type of music takes a lot of skill and thought but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Ik heb hier helemaal niks mee en ik heb er ook niet bijzonder veel geduld voor vandaag. En dan heb ik hem al een paar dagen uitgesteld. Wild toeterende trompetten met van die dempers, zenuwachtige basloopjes, saxofoons. Dit was in die tijd live vast ontzettend gaaf, omdat je verder ook weinig om handen had, maar nu staat het me gewoon tegen. Ik vergelijk hem even met toeterhel Bitches Brew en dan kan ik hier nog wel een 2 voor geven.

Big band greatness! I love the sound, but find it hard to distinguish one song from the next. It kind of just washed over me.

Unfortunately I didn't give this a full listen, but here are my thoughts from listening to the first half: I feel like this is well written music, however it really doesn't catch me. It just seems busy and kind of bland. I really should listen to it again and in full though.

Brilliant jazz. Like jazz? I don't. That said, there's some fun, big band dance music on here as well as the usual Sunday sleepers.

Objectively a good piece of music but I really could not be any less interested in a Jazz album from 1958.

It's not as good as I'd hoped but I do like Lil Darlin'. Sinatra and Basie is better.

Too Jazzy

Another record that would benefit seeing in a live format. These instrumental Jazz/Big Band records just aren't as interesting in audio format. I want to watch it. I want to see the emotion in the artists. I don't get any of that in just listening to this type of music. Which is a shame because it limits my enjoyment from it. I do like what's going on. The arrangements are interesting. But my enjoyment and curiosity is limited to just the sound. And I know there is a lot going on that I am just not getting. Oh well.

I'm not totally sure what to say, to my ears it's pretty standard big-band jazz. Maybe it was noteworthy in 1958. It's fine, but I wouldn't put it on again as anything other than background music to talk over.

Just not a fan of jazz, got pretty bored and a little annoyed

Not a big fan of the big bands. The first song is very good though!

To my surprise, the fact that there were no lyrics wasn’t what I didn’t like about this album. I think that after seeing it was only 40 minutes, I was shocked how long it felt. The first two songs I was vibing with but after awhile it unfortunately just sounded similar and somewhat boring..

Cartoons have forever ruined this type of music for me. I can't take any of it seriously. Tom and Jerry absolutely bastarsized it. Not really my thing anyway.

Felt like I was trapped in a Tom & Jerry cartoon. There’s worse places I guess. I can respect the musicianship gone into this and I have endured so much worse on this 1,001 list. At least the wife didn’t walk in and tell me to switch this rubbish off, so I will give a solid 2.

I'm too scared of jazz

BL: Heard of Count Basie through word of mouth but never knowingly listened to his works, will be interested to hear. AL: unless I'm missing some major historical context this to me just feels like a regular, run of the mill Jazz album of its time, of which I don't feel particularly strong towards, most of the tracks blended into one and didn't provide any terms of notable listening. Quite dissapointed with this FT: didn't have one 2/5

# 164 : My first thought were man it so old. I can listen, but its not real good, Audio quality was low by modern standards. I'm not much of a fan of albums devoid of lyrics, I found it boring and a bit Too brassy.

This would probably hold my attention late at night, rather than the early morning listen. It was pleasant enough in a cardigan wearing cuddly sort of way. It did sound very dated.

I am not a huge fan of "Big Band" music but I will give credit to the recording and musician-ship of the band. There were lots of solos spread across this album, piano, upright bass, trumpet, sax, trombone, clarinet, drum, and even a xylophone and bells. Just felt like something was missing .... oh yeah, lyrics.

Als jemanden der Jazz Musik nicht fasziniert, hat sich dieses Album nichts an meiner Grundhaltung geändert. Man kann es mal durchhören - schlimm ist es nicht - , jedoch neigt man auch bei dem ein oder anderen Song zum springen auf den nächsten.. damit man es schneller vollendet hat.

Made me smile as it reminded me of Mum bopping round our kitchen when Jazz Record Request was on in the 70s. Cheery in general, but after listening I couldn't distinguish any one track over another and it felt a bit like aural wallpaper. Plus the cover is awful.

It’s funny that one of these songs is called “The Late Late Show” because all I can hear when I listen to big band music is The Tonight Show Band blaring out overly enthusiastic bombastic blaring noise to convince people that they are about to have fun. Hey big band musicians, why is your band so big? Why do you have like 20 horn players? How is having a band this big economical? You pay each horn player $10 and you’re out $400 bucks. That’s the whole fee you’re getting for the gig. How are you going to pay the other 87 musicians? Are you going to tell Satchmo Jenkins and Tootely Toot Jones that they aren’t getting paid tonight? I’m deducting one star for each musician involved in making this ruckus above 50. That takes us to negative 8 billion stars. BWHA BWHAH BAAA WAAA WAHH!!!!!!

I'm sure this is objectivley good but as a first time listener to big band swing it seems so over done. Sounds lie every movie sound track of my childhood. I'm sure Count Basie did it first but in 2023 it seems trite.

Problemet med storbandsjazz är just förledet storband-. När alla ska med på en och samma gång blir det olidligt. Det är synd för vissa låtar hade kunnat vara riktigt bra, tex Teddy the Toad börjar jobbigt, lugnar sig, blir riktigt bra runt 0.24 (den delen skulle tom kunna samplas) men sen blir det helt hysteriskt runt 0.40. När det bara är rytmsektionen och nån spelar solo är det stundtals också riktigt bra. Men sen ska alla in och fördärva igen. Det kan tyvärr inte bli mer än en tvåa, vilket är synd, men Count får skylla sig själv. Han borde haft en kvintett istället.

Det svänger. Det är kul. Samma "problem" som Tito dock. I vilket sammanhang ska man lyssna? Om man klev in på en skön, rökig klubb på 1940-talet hade det varit episkt med ett band som körde detta. Det är dock mycket bättre än Tito. 11 av 10 gånger hellre detta än Tito. Så en 2:a. Det är i samma klass som Cream och Costello. I vissa fall bättre än Costello, och Cream är bättre i fall. Men totalt i samma anda.

Har sin charm och kvalitet, men gör sig inte speciellt bra i kontexten fullängdsalbum medan man sitter och jobbar en regnig onsdag i november.

I don’t think this is for me. But I didn’t find it offensive to listen to at the gym and in fact had a pretty good workout

I didn't like the lack of lyrics, and I'm not a big fan of jazz, so I didn't really like this album. The compositions were beautiful though.

While a suitable jazz album, it was pretty standard fare overall… nothing that blew me away or warranted the ‘wow’ factor I would expect a jazz album to have to be on this list.

I won't blame you if this is your thing, but Basie has never been mine even as a bit of a Jazz lover.

Honestly hard for me to judge as it's really not my style. Sounds like general music from before the 50s so I'm not sure why it's better than anything else in this genre

Jazzy! Post war, jazz orchestra with great brass and woodwind. No lyrics or singing. Teddy the Toad was suave and a good listen. Not something I would listen to often

Classic big-band music. Personally, I've never seen the point of it, but I beleive it was very big in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.

Chilled and very atmospheric, not something i'll ever relisten to.

I may reflect on this score with disdain in the future, I'm not experienced enough with Big Band music to accurately score this. I'm just basing it off my listening experience, which left me feeling as if the record was forgettable (barring Flight of the Foo Birds, which is the only thing saving this from 1 star).

jazz é complicado. slow jazz não é muito meu estilo - já hard bop, um jazz mais animado e rápido, é algo que combina mais com meu gosto. Interessantemente, esse álbum tem os 2 - então me senti dividido, não gostando tanto das músicas mais lentas e apreciando mais a outra metade do álbum.

Best Song: Whirly-Bird. High intensity, nice solo, killer bassline. Worst Song: Duet. Too slow and plodding for my liking. Overall: The rhythm section really shines here, but unfortunately it's just not the style of music that I like, so I can't stomach much more than the album's (short) runtime.

I don’t really like all instrumental albums and I don’t really like jazz music all too much so this was a hard one to get through. But I appreciate the artistry here to be fair and (while I know the cover influences this) the whole album portrays a gloomy style of like the day after the apocalypse kinda thing it’s got some insanely gloomy tracks then other tracks that take a more traditional upbeat feeling (see the 1,2 punch of after supper then flight of the foo birds). The music actually reminded me quite a bit of playing fallout and Cuphead and how both of those games soundtracks are very jazz based at the core ( and I love both those games so that’s a point in the albums favour. I can’t say I love it though it’s really, really not my kinda thing so 2/5 for good instrumentation and random gaming memories.

Allemaal leuk en aardig die toeters, maar zo prominent hoeft niet voor mij. En jazz, tja....

Heb het zowaar 7 nummers volgehouden. Toen bereikte ik het punt dat ik de eerstvolgende persoon die ik tegen zou komen met de vlakke hand in het gezicht wilde slaan. Gelukkig kwam ik er net op tijd achter dat die persoon er ook niks aan kon doen dat Count Basie zo'n toeterende zenuwpees is.

2/5 - Impressive for the genre, but I have little interest in listening to swing or big band.

Appreciate it for what it is. A few songs made me feel like dancing in the kitchen with my non-existant husband in my poodle-type skirt and kitten heels. Others sounded like they were sampled in Family Guy, so that was a bit of a turn off. Rating 2/5 because it's not an album I'd ever choose to listen to again, but obviously is still a phenomenal piece of art.

I like a chunk of jazz from the swing era - Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Raymond Scott, some Louis Armstrong, some Cab Calloway... but this in particular sounds like something you would hear in an old folk's home. Time has not been kind to this.

More big band than expected, so ergo better. Still some noodly jazz, but hey ho. Clearly very good.

There is nothing bad to say about the musicians but the sound just isn’t as good as the jazz that going on around the same time. I guess I never really got into this genre. The tunes that Spotify auto played after this were quite good. Something about the Count doesn’t work for me.

I’m not a fan of Big Band Jazz but I appreciate these well arranged songs and expert musicianship. This band is toight! Halfway thru it all sort of blends together and when the tempo slows down I got to catch my breath and enjoy Lil Darling. But those loud brassy horns don’t do it for me.

Volgens mij is dit heel goede jazz. Helaas ben ik niet zo'n liefhebber van deze muziekstroming. Het nummer \"duet\" vond ik echt te heftig. In het algemeen voor mij dus een sterretje minder. Zang is wel geweldig, oftewel lekker instrumentaal XD.

Sounds very much of its era, like film music almost, lots of brass. It's alright, can appreciate it, feels kinda classy, defo not my bag though. 2/5

Surprise this was in the late 50s, I always placed Count Basie pre-war. Interesting mix of big band and cool jazz. Instrumentals didn't grab me.

The Jazz-Swing Bomb! Not my Cup of Tea!

1. Lovely instrumental on The Kid from Red Bank, piano is especially nice to listen to. Brass is lively and fun. Final chord is satisfying. 2. Duet is very jazzy. Realizing this is an instrumental album, I tend to prefer lyrics, but nevertheless still nice. Piano vamping and brass is all a joy to the ear. The dynamics are lovely, saxophone is brilliant. The bass is gorgeous and adds to the song subtly. 3. After Supper's intro is gorgeous. Slow, steady beat. Very easy to listen to. Again a very jazzy feel, more soulful than Duet. Piano is lovely. Personal preference here but definitely missing lyrics. Outro is nice but too long. Final part is underwhelming 4. Intro to Flight of the Foo Birds is very different to AS, definitely a jazzy album. Story is being told, I don't know what it is but there is definitely a story here. Saxophone player is brilliant. Certain parts get me excited for a key change but I can't tell if it's happened or not. I don't think it has. 5. Double-O's saxophone is enjoyable. A lot of the song sounds similar to previous tracks. The descending parts were good, building of anticipation was also enjoyable. 6. Teddy the Toad's intro on a different album would have been enjoyable but at this point everything sounds repetitive. Drums and bass are the highlight 1:00 minute in. Piano is repetitive also, too similar to previous tracks. Even the crescendo's are doing nothing. Outros all sound the same, same build up with one instrument, ending on forte. Fairly boring track. 7. Whirly-Bird sounds the exact same as TtT but faster. Piano details and drums are nice. Even with the Count Basie Orchestra, it sounds the same. The arrangements are too similar. Even the saxophone manages to sound boring. Again with the outro, long drawn out note, boring. 8. Midnite Blue's intro is nothing new here. Piano, joined by brass and drums. Seen on pretty much all previous tracks. Chords are enjoyable, slight clash in a good way. Piano is good but does not make up for the repetitiveness seen in the entire album. This build up was much better than previous tracks, lots of soul, jazziness, enjoyable. The decrescendo is also good. Still does not forgive the blatant sameness of the rest of the album. Outro had potential with plain piano but ruined by the other instruments. 9. Splanky's intro is childlike and boring. Piano followed by drums, where have I seen this before? I wonder. Same build up, drums sounded better but what the fuck. Why is this in the 1001 albums you should listen to? Listen to first 4 songs and you're done. All the crescendos sound the same, it is predictable and not in a way that is enjoyable. AGAIN WITH THE OUTRO. I cannot wait to finish this album. 10. Fantail had the same intro as every other album. I can't do this anymore. Saxophone is boring how the FUCK do you make the sax boring? Drums were enjoyable in this track, clearly a skilled drummer. I feel bad that they are caught up in this same song over and over album. 11. Lil' Darlin'. Again with the piano joined by other instruments intro. I'm going insane. Not sure what the string instrument is but it's the highlight of the entire album. I was looking forward to this album but it is BORING. Piano details were pretty at first but now just sound samey and I am sick of them. Way too long too especially since it's just the same thing over and over please move on. Thank god it's over. Final Thoughts: Anna do not listen again, it just made you cross. 2 out of 5.

There’s only so much big band music I can take. First 2 or 3 tunes were fine but after that it just got tiresome.

It's okay---couldn't get much interest.

Great for what it is, but of its time. Would still be brilliant in a jazz club, but on Spotify in a home office situation it doesn't really connect.

Highlights - Duet and Flight of the Foo Birds, I guess? Flight... certainly paints a picture, I can envision a gaggle of sea birds dancing about on the beach with this in the background. Having said that, I've never been a big swing music fan, it still sounds all the same to me... loud, surprising horns, slow-walking jazz bass, piano plinks here and there, relaxed woodwinds, brushes on percussion. It's winding-down music...and not necessarily for me.
