Swing and jazz are not really my cup of tea
Incredible music but not my cup of tea!
I didn't like the lack of lyrics, and I'm not a big fan of jazz, so I didn't really like this album. The compositions were beautiful though.
No, no, no, music for silent movies.
While a suitable jazz album, it was pretty standard fare overall… nothing that blew me away or warranted the ‘wow’ factor I would expect a jazz album to have to be on this list.
Not 4 g
2/5 good but not my thing
I won't blame you if this is your thing, but Basie has never been mine even as a bit of a Jazz lover.
Honestly hard for me to judge as it's really not my style. Sounds like general music from before the 50s so I'm not sure why it's better than anything else in this genre
Jazzy! Post war, jazz orchestra with great brass and woodwind. No lyrics or singing. Teddy the Toad was suave and a good listen. Not something I would listen to often
Es medio frustrante la calidad del audio
It’s good for what it is, but a bit boring for me
Big band is certainly less annoying than other jazz, but it's not something I can get too excited about.
It's fine as far as upbeat fifties jazz goes.
Definitely not what i’m used to, kinda sounds like a silent movie soundtrack. Piano runs are impressive though?
2/5
- Some groovy songs but didn't like the slower ones - A vibe, but nothing I'd go back to
- Makes me feel like I’m eating in a fancy Italian restaurant - Very high quality for what it is, background dinner music
Wonderfully orchestrated but no words
bleep bloop
Classic big-band music. Personally, I've never seen the point of it, but I beleive it was very big in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.
Chilled and very atmospheric, not something i'll ever relisten to.
I may reflect on this score with disdain in the future, I'm not experienced enough with Big Band music to accurately score this. I'm just basing it off my listening experience, which left me feeling as if the record was forgettable (barring Flight of the Foo Birds, which is the only thing saving this from 1 star).
Appreciate it. But it’s very much a session.
Best Song: Whirly-Bird. High intensity, nice solo, killer bassline. Worst Song: Duet. Too slow and plodding for my liking. Overall: The rhythm section really shines here, but unfortunately it's just not the style of music that I like, so I can't stomach much more than the album's (short) runtime.
Definitely not my music but I did appreciate the talent but was too much
I wanted to like this, but I just don't think jazzy big band music is the one for me 😱
Pretty good album. It was calm and soothing, sounded like what would be played at a classy 1950s party. I enjoyed it but wouldn't listen to it much. Favorite song: Whirly-Bird
Too dated for me. Fun for historical context, but the recording is rough, and every song is basically the same blaring noise.
Big band jazz stuff - not my cup of tea. Pleasant enough but sounds like muzak.
I don’t really like all instrumental albums and I don’t really like jazz music all too much so this was a hard one to get through. But I appreciate the artistry here to be fair and (while I know the cover influences this) the whole album portrays a gloomy style of like the day after the apocalypse kinda thing it’s got some insanely gloomy tracks then other tracks that take a more traditional upbeat feeling (see the 1,2 punch of after supper then flight of the foo birds). The music actually reminded me quite a bit of playing fallout and Cuphead and how both of those games soundtracks are very jazz based at the core ( and I love both those games so that’s a point in the albums favour. I can’t say I love it though it’s really, really not my kinda thing so 2/5 for good instrumentation and random gaming memories.
tom n jerry music. feels like adderall and coffee
It was pretty good big band jazz. Not really my thing.
It was fine. In my limited exposure to jazz this is not my favorite 2/5
2/5 - Impressive for the genre, but I have little interest in listening to swing or big band.
Appreciate it for what it is. A few songs made me feel like dancing in the kitchen with my non-existant husband in my poodle-type skirt and kitten heels. Others sounded like they were sampled in Family Guy, so that was a bit of a turn off. Rating 2/5 because it's not an album I'd ever choose to listen to again, but obviously is still a phenomenal piece of art.
Bro i'm sad, and all this upbeat madness wasn't really getting to me. But nutty on the trumpet tho.
Got it. From those times…wouldnt put it up in the car though…
Old school big bang swing jazz - perfectly fine, but not my lane at all
Alright. Wouldn’t go out of my way to listen again though.
I like a chunk of jazz from the swing era - Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Raymond Scott, some Louis Armstrong, some Cab Calloway... but this in particular sounds like something you would hear in an old folk's home. Time has not been kind to this.
Just not sure what i got out of this
Свинг/джаз в чистейшей его форме. Ничего плохого сказать я не могу, но и восторга, пожалуй, не возникло совсем.
It's upbeat, fun, gets your booty moving. I'll probably never listen to it again.
Ihan hauskaa kuunnella tällainenkin levy, tuntuu vaan et parikin biisiä ois jo riittänyt. Vaikea löytää hirveästi mitään eri vivahteita biisien välillä.
Not my cup of tea…
As far as classical/orchestra music goes, this was fine. If you've got an elevator around, this would be right at home there.
Smooth
The juxtaposition of the music to the album cover is confusing. A bit like an owl doing the splits, I'm afraid. Must do better. Declan Rice's girlfriend.
Background music at best for me
Maybe I should listen to more Jazz.
Nice music to stroll down a Parisian street to or have on in a hotel lobby
More big band than expected, so ergo better. Still some noodly jazz, but hey ho. Clearly very good.
There is nothing bad to say about the musicians but the sound just isn’t as good as the jazz that going on around the same time. I guess I never really got into this genre. The tunes that Spotify auto played after this were quite good. Something about the Count doesn’t work for me.
I’m not a fan of Big Band Jazz but I appreciate these well arranged songs and expert musicianship. This band is toight! Halfway thru it all sort of blends together and when the tempo slows down I got to catch my breath and enjoy Lil Darling. But those loud brassy horns don’t do it for me.
the first song is ripped for the bebop opener 2.5
that was a weird album
Lively jazz with plummy piano and some fun double bass, but not really for me.
It’s well played and doesn’t warrant a 1 star. It’s just not my thing at all.
TV chat show jazz
Sounds very much of its era, like film music almost, lots of brass. It's alright, can appreciate it, feels kinda classy, defo not my bag though. 2/5
Surprise this was in the late 50s, I always placed Count Basie pre-war. Interesting mix of big band and cool jazz. Instrumentals didn't grab me.
2 1/2 Background music for studying for me
The Jazz-Swing Bomb! Not my Cup of Tea!
1. Lovely instrumental on The Kid from Red Bank, piano is especially nice to listen to. Brass is lively and fun. Final chord is satisfying. 2. Duet is very jazzy. Realizing this is an instrumental album, I tend to prefer lyrics, but nevertheless still nice. Piano vamping and brass is all a joy to the ear. The dynamics are lovely, saxophone is brilliant. The bass is gorgeous and adds to the song subtly. 3. After Supper's intro is gorgeous. Slow, steady beat. Very easy to listen to. Again a very jazzy feel, more soulful than Duet. Piano is lovely. Personal preference here but definitely missing lyrics. Outro is nice but too long. Final part is underwhelming 4. Intro to Flight of the Foo Birds is very different to AS, definitely a jazzy album. Story is being told, I don't know what it is but there is definitely a story here. Saxophone player is brilliant. Certain parts get me excited for a key change but I can't tell if it's happened or not. I don't think it has. 5. Double-O's saxophone is enjoyable. A lot of the song sounds similar to previous tracks. The descending parts were good, building of anticipation was also enjoyable. 6. Teddy the Toad's intro on a different album would have been enjoyable but at this point everything sounds repetitive. Drums and bass are the highlight 1:00 minute in. Piano is repetitive also, too similar to previous tracks. Even the crescendo's are doing nothing. Outros all sound the same, same build up with one instrument, ending on forte. Fairly boring track. 7. Whirly-Bird sounds the exact same as TtT but faster. Piano details and drums are nice. Even with the Count Basie Orchestra, it sounds the same. The arrangements are too similar. Even the saxophone manages to sound boring. Again with the outro, long drawn out note, boring. 8. Midnite Blue's intro is nothing new here. Piano, joined by brass and drums. Seen on pretty much all previous tracks. Chords are enjoyable, slight clash in a good way. Piano is good but does not make up for the repetitiveness seen in the entire album. This build up was much better than previous tracks, lots of soul, jazziness, enjoyable. The decrescendo is also good. Still does not forgive the blatant sameness of the rest of the album. Outro had potential with plain piano but ruined by the other instruments. 9. Splanky's intro is childlike and boring. Piano followed by drums, where have I seen this before? I wonder. Same build up, drums sounded better but what the fuck. Why is this in the 1001 albums you should listen to? Listen to first 4 songs and you're done. All the crescendos sound the same, it is predictable and not in a way that is enjoyable. AGAIN WITH THE OUTRO. I cannot wait to finish this album. 10. Fantail had the same intro as every other album. I can't do this anymore. Saxophone is boring how the FUCK do you make the sax boring? Drums were enjoyable in this track, clearly a skilled drummer. I feel bad that they are caught up in this same song over and over album. 11. Lil' Darlin'. Again with the piano joined by other instruments intro. I'm going insane. Not sure what the string instrument is but it's the highlight of the entire album. I was looking forward to this album but it is BORING. Piano details were pretty at first but now just sound samey and I am sick of them. Way too long too especially since it's just the same thing over and over please move on. Thank god it's over. Final Thoughts: Anna do not listen again, it just made you cross. 2 out of 5.
Pleasant background music, like the soundtrack to every '50s crime B film. Listenable but nothing to write home about.
Big band noise
Too Jazzy
There’s only so much big band music I can take. First 2 or 3 tunes were fine but after that it just got tiresome.
It's okay---couldn't get much interest.
Great for what it is, but of its time. Would still be brilliant in a jazz club, but on Spotify in a home office situation it doesn't really connect.
Highlights - Duet and Flight of the Foo Birds, I guess? Flight... certainly paints a picture, I can envision a gaggle of sea birds dancing about on the beach with this in the background. Having said that, I've never been a big swing music fan, it still sounds all the same to me... loud, surprising horns, slow-walking jazz bass, piano plinks here and there, relaxed woodwinds, brushes on percussion. It's winding-down music...and not necessarily for me.
Rather boring orchestra / big band music.
Nope
Enjoyed to an extent, not my thing though, probably wouldn’t listen again. Theatre/soundtrack/lift music
Production: 9/20 Songwriting: 9/20 Innovation: 8/20 Bangers: 0/20 Emotional response: 12/20 =38 Pretty underwhelming background music but not unpleasant
Orchestral music really isn't my cup of tea. Some nice tunes in here, but this goes to the background music playlist for me.
Pleasant enough, pretty forgettable for me though. Big band is alright for background music in films but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen
Its jazz. Seems like good jazz? Who's to say.
Too much Jazz
Alkuun tuli kivat Fallout-pelin tunnelmat, mutta ei kantanut loppun asti. Varmasti tyylikästä musaa omaan aikaan, mutta kasarinlapselle levyllinen on liikaa kerralla.
old time jazz orchestra does well in a new vegas style game dont like it for lsitening though
I can appreciate it- before my time
This may be an influential album but on my ranking scale this type of an instrumental album only gets one star.
Not for me.
Man, am I glad I didn't grow up in the era where big Band was the rage. Mr Basie & His Orchestra do pack a little more bang on this one then some others of the time. They are in sync but not setting off any H-bombs. Album cover is cool, maybe more popular due to cold war. 1.12 stars.
I've only ever heard a couple of the legendary acts from the 50's and they all sound pretty similar. Based on his credits and list of albums its evident that Basie is a legend, but I couldn't tell you why or what it is that he is doing that differentiates him in any way. He must be competent to assemble 10+ players and put together a swing jazz album so he's obviously doing something right, I just have no affection for any of it. A couple of the tunes from Atomic featured some upbeat solos which I enjoyed. Otherwise the rest of it falls into I'm sure if I was around at this time it would make a lot more sense as to how and why this was the popular music on the forefront of pushing musical creativity at the time. Can't ignore the 50's for their place in music history, I just have no personal fondness for many of the acts. I don't mean it as a knock, but I've checked the box and now I'm moving on. 1.54 stars
Big band jazz. What you'd expect.
En vaan ymmärrä tätä musatyyliä, omaan makuuni tämä on ärsyttävää ja puuduttavaa, toki jollekulle muulle musiikin helmi. Minulta kuitenkin tyly 1/5
This is the Tom and Jerry soundtrack
Aburridisimo. 2/10
The hell
This is not my genre, so i pretty much hated it, so yeah that's it, didn't even finish it
DNF, not for me
Really not my cup of tea, I cant even really use this as a background
Instrumental
I just don't like big band...
Couldn't they afford a singer?
Call centre
Big band sounds just aren’t my thing. I am having a wretched run at the moment. Rap, big bands, crooning, 60s folk. FFS give me something with electric guitars before I explode.
Did not enjoy this. Was technically good but not really what I felt like listening to.

don't like big band or swing. to the trumpet section, get behind me Satan

Basse Greven er sikkert en mega dygtig musiker. Men den her form for swing-jazz tiltaler mig overhovedet ikke.
Not my cup of tea.
Not my style.
Couldn’t finish it. Not the type of music I can listen to for very long at all. Really don’t like Big Band/Swing type stuff. If it had lyrics I might have been able to sort of distract myself from the sounds and stay locked in and keep listening maybe?? I tried!
eh not my vibe
99% percent of jazz hurts my brain and this is sadly not an exception :( so i can’t judge fairly
Ei lähe
Man, do I hate jazz. And big band is basically the hard rock of jazz.
This wasn’t offensive, it just was boring. This shit got old real quick.
So bad no reviews
Why is there elevator music on this list?
ugh jazz, instant vomit. and wtf is this album cover???
Not my style of music.
I can’t really follow music like this
Pas mon style
Bland old album
Not for me. 1/5
I didn’t really like it it was like elavitor music
Meh
Not for me! 😊 For me it sounds like something that I would find as background music in a old cartoon.
Definitely not my cup of tea. Not a jazz fan and I need to hear words to enjoy music.
Not for me
N ouvi
Not a genre I have any interest in, beyond historical importance/influence. I have been listening off-and-on to Andrew Hickey's "A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs" podcast (I am only up to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, which is a full 53 episodes in!) and I remember a lot of the early episodes discussed Basie, Ellington, etc., pretty heavily. We are so lucky we grew up in a time with rock music. LOL, imagine getting excited by this.
No words
Just couldn't feel the music.
Nope
I get why this album is considered good, but I really dislike big band and find it extremely boring.
I tried to listen to this bearing in mind that I don’t really like jazz and that it was from the 1950s. But, even with that in mind I don’t think this was particularly impressive or progressive
Wtf was that.
This was not an easy listen. The rock n’roll counter culture of the 60’s has never made so much sense when forced to sit through this. For me it just doesn’t resonate. I think the biggest obstacle is that I don’t understand what the music is trying to make me feel. Each number is indistinguishable from the other in terms of quality. This just ain’t it.
Sounds dangerous; No thanks.
Not my stuff
Big band music not realty me
Bored.
Good God no. I hate Jazz.
I just couldn’t really get into this one.
Instrumental jazz, probably the worst combo I can think of.
Not good
This wasn’t for me. If you’re into big band I’m sure this is a masterpiece but it took a lot to finish this past track 4.
My parents perhaps. Definitely not me. Hated the bass section
1950s not really my bag
Can see how people liked this in the 50's but not great by modern music standards. Lots of the songs very repetitive. Don't think I'll be listening again.
This is extremely not my shit, swing sucks
I can see why people like this and why the album is important but I really cant get into Jazz at all. This is very much posh resturant music for me. Favourite song: Least favourite: Album artwork: I love the cover
1.5 Not for me though it was more tolerable than the Charles Mingus album.
Jazz again :(
No
Yeah, no
Pleasant but uninspiring. Not crap enough for a 1, but not good enough for a 2. I'll see how I feel in the morning.
Jazz is shit.
I have not heard of this album before. I don’t listen to jazz so it was quite boring, didn’t notice when a song changed. Great as background music but I don’t think I will listen again.
Ol timey hoo-hah. Give every instrument a sassy air and slap a mute on it -- now that's music!
No thanks
Not for me (couldn't listen to more than a couple of songs).
Swing makes my brain itch. Not for me.
I feel bad but this did not hit for me at all. Not even a little bit. Did my best to try to stir up some appreciation for the musicianship but it was just a dull, dull record released at a time when everything you could do in the genre of Swing had already been done. Love to see the NJ representation from the artist, but can’t get even a little bit into any of this record.
Maybe I don’t like jazz. I’ve realised I much prefer listening to songs with lyrics or it gets boring for me, like I’m just listening to a backing track.
boring even for a instrumental
Jag vägrar
Swing aint my thing
Did not like it at all too many weird ass tunes
Tom & Jerry music
Tavanomaisen taitavaa. Vakuuttaa, että kävelevä basso on jazzin perimmäisen ärsyttävyyden taustalla.
Nah
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: No, could tolerate it at barely Audio level in a restaurant or something, not my cup of tea Favourite song: didn’t have one
No one was offended. Glad to know it exists. If I have a posh sophisticated dinner party it can be part of the background music. Cover art. Odd choice. Still living with the direct aftermath of WW2 in 1958.

Not a massive fan of Jazz
Got 2 tracks in and thats a no from me fam.
No jazz
Boring ass album. Never going back to it.
Bad
I know this is a critically acclaimed big band jazz album but man this music just doesn’t land with me. I couldn’t listen to it straight through without hitting next before a song was done. Maybe it’s great live and in its era. The song Double-O was kinda fun I guess?
No acostumbro a escuchar este tipo de música pero me ha gustado mucho la canción "the kid from red bank". Eso sí no volvería a escuchar el disco de seguido.
Chock full of swing music! Every track seems to meld together and none of them stuck out to me. Very nice background music.
Jazz, I won’t listen again.
Some of the jazzy bits were ok but then the horns and everything came back in. I hate all the big band stuff
pitos orquesta
Not my cup of tea really. Maybe the setting but did not really enjoy.
It makes me want to sip whiskey from a highball in a dark club, smoking cigarettes and being chill, None of which I would do in real life.
