Reviews (page 12 of 13)

Just felt like nothing. I got to the end of it and I can’t recall a single sound.

Big band swing Splanky is a simultaneously great and terrible name for a song

Ok but not my thing

Smoooooth jazz. I could fall asleep to this. Not bad, not exciting at all though.

Something different! I liked this as background music. It dragged on a bit at the end but it was technically very good.

Jazzy - not for me but definitely good in the genre

There's just no scenario where I needed to hear this album in this lifetime.

Not for me

Just not my thing

I'm really not a fan of swing or jazz, but this was alright. I can appreciate the musicality and the talent and that's why I've given it 2 stars, as we all know this isn't a "my favourite albums" list.

Preferred the quieter ones , ok ish background music . As Sinatra would say 58 ' was a very good year' but this isn't as great as Glen Miller .

Definitely too young for big band and still too young for jazz. Despite The Atomic Mr Basie being a piano player, that was forty minutes of blaring horns. The musicianship is good, just not for lil’ young me. (2.0*s) Dated, and outdated.

I approached this album with mild curiosity because it's so far out of my genre experience. I found that it was pleasant enough, there was just nothing for me to really grab on to. I respect that what Basie and his band are doing is very good in their particular milieu, but it just doesn't have context for me.

Good sounds, good album, good tunes for a rainy day.

Really just not my thing, so it is hard for me to appreciate the talent.

Forgettable big band crap

Boring

I’m sure this is very good big band / jazz. Totally not my jam. Just really don’t like this kind of music.

Neat brass. Just kinda liked other, more low-key jazz stuff more.

Great musicianship but I can’t imagine listening to it again

The 1001 pushes me into 50s big band jazz, a genre my Spotify account rarely ventures into. It reminds me of my late father-in-law, who no doubt would have enjoyed numbers such as Midnite Blue. If pushed for a favourite track, I'd probably go eith Double O, although Flight Of The Foo Birds brings to my mind Carry On theme tunes and Splanky reminds me of Police Squad and Naked Gun. The Count's influence lasted far beyond the 50s, but while I appreciate the musicality, it's not to my taste. 2 stars, thank you and what's next?

it was fun but again again again its not for me

I've heard enough instrumental albums now, and plus my one friend has played quite a bit of jazz for me, to know that there is better stuff out there than this. It's not bad, just comparative there's stuff I enjoy a lot more.

not what i was expecting. def not for me.

Not my cup of tea, but served as little dose of different type of music experience in my day, I guess. Not too bad, liked the dark/mysterious vibes :duet, after supper.

Another one for the 'Jazz isn't for me' pile.

Not something I would usually listen to but this was pretty enjoyable. Might not stick it back on again but absolutely fine and if it's your thing, I can see why.

Not my thing at all.

I can’t comprehend jazz yet

4/5 Was okay. Just sounded like generic big band music to me

Labāk, bet joprojām ne pārāk interesanti.

Yep. It's a big band I don't know what I should feel Cocktail party time!

yeah idk. no strong feeling on this one. "after supper", "midnight blue" and "splanky" are all a little bit sexual with it but other than that i really don't have much to say about this album. i'm sure there's a good reason it's on here, i could see these guys being big at the time and the wiki article does mention that it picked up two different awards at the first ever grammys so i guess this popped the fuck off in 1958. but its 2026 these days.... guess it's just not for me. i feel mean giving it a 2, but to be blunt there's no way i'd pick this out for another listen when my only thought on it is "yep, that's big band", so what choice do i have. for what its worth i dont think its necessarily a bad album, just one that i couldn't get into myself. sorry mr basie. yknow, as i close this out i'm realising i actually do have one strong feeling on this album after all: the feeling that i'm missing something. so maybe some day i'll come back to this one and i'll finally Get It, and then i'll feel ashamed for my words and deeds. even if i don't, i'm sure the cover art will still go hard.

All right, we’re jumping into a Time Machine I’m sure this album was an absolute banger when it got first released like they were lining up wherever they can to pick up this record but in 2026 I mean if you want to step back in time and feel like you’re in the 1920s and Gatsby‘s party I guess you could pick up this record at least it was short and only 40 minutes two stars can’t be too mean on a jazz record from the 50s. They were trying at least. 2/5

Fair play I guess but I really don’t enjoy this kind of thing

Well, at least nobody was singing about love over it

Hmmm, it's fine. I like the style, and wanted to hear more music like this, but most of it didn't really grab me. The big band meets jazz vibe is cool, but to my tastes a lot of it felt pretty plodding without much hooks or identity to the songs. Just my own taste.

Some great driving beats with saxophone, trumpet and piano working well together but nothing revolutionary. I liked it but probably won’t be back

It was fun, different from what I usually listen to, but really just not my style.

One of the better jazz albums I’ve gotten but still not really for me. Feels like waiting music.

I love jazz, or what people percieve to be “jazz”, but I’ve always struggled with most big band jazz. The more instruments involved and the styling of music seems to provide me less to think about and results in me becoming less interested - particularly when the “orchestra” is used as it is here. Definitely a me thing. So this was enjoyable, but didn’t really do much for me sadly. Superb playing - particularly Basie himself - and perfectly good for what it is, just not really my thing.

One of those weird and rare jazz albums that I actually think would be better if it *weren't* instrumental. It's pretty fun at times, but the whole vibe just feels like it's missing something. I feel like I should be hearing Frank Sinatra's voice singing over all of these, but instead I'm left with perfectly good instrumentals, but that could just benefit from having one extra layer that would make it a lot more complete.

cartoony type music

if it had lyrics we could of made it biggg

I'm not really into listening to jazz but the music is very good and I could maybe see myself listening to it as ambient music to an event, dinner, etc. Very talented musicians.

Would be great for a Fallout game or smth. Or just casual listening. Not really what I wanted this morning.

Smooth jazz - just not my cut of tea

it's jazz

My wife was a Kenny G fan back in the day. I could see me enjoying this a little more of I was on a date with her and then seeing Ron Burgundy dancing all over the tables. Yea, that would be cool, for a few minutes, then I'd have to kill him. This is Jazz. Not my thing but could see me enjoying in the right time and environment. This just wasn't the time or the environment. 2

2.5 This may quite possibly be the most misleading album cover I’ve seen on this list yet. It also sounds like it could be the oldest thus far, but it’s actually three years newer than a Sinatra album we had. It never really occurred to me until this listening that big band music is pretty much extinct aside from the occasional fancy event or New Year’s Eve performance, but I was still surprised to see in the cultural zeitgeist in 1958 nonetheless, when rock & roll had already taken the world by storm and Elvis’ hips had brought the nation to its knees. Given its appearance here, I’m guessing it’s an album that critics probably consider to be one of the last great outings for the genre. And… it’s fine? Idk, I’m no expert on big band music (I’m not even sure those exist anymore), but this sounds like most everything else I’ve heard that I would classify as such, and likewise, I found its overall enjoyability to be very dependent on my mood. At its best, it evoked thoughts of Las Vegas, old movies, and Fallout (I checked to see if the Count ever made an appearance in the games, but I guess he’s too new). At its worst, the horns were grating and it gave me a headache while I was trying to focus on work. Given my earlier comments about the state of the genre, it seems that we collectively decided as a society that there’s a time and a place for this kind of music, and a Wednesday during work doesn’t seem to be it. I could definitely see myself enjoying this more in the right frame of mind and environment, but given its overall unremarkable nature and the fact that it got on my nerves half the time, I don’t feel I can go any higher than a 2.5. I guess ask me again how I feel come New Year’s Eve. Or when I'm in Vegas celebrating Michigan State’s NCAA men’s hockey championship. Go green.

Eh it's instrumental jazz. Best song: Duet

Clean and quality. Just not something id listen to regularly. 2/5

Somehow never heard this before. Was quite good. This note is a reminder to myself to listen again

Jazz that’s palatable to white people in the 50s.

Just not my jam. The music was pleasant enough. I felt like I was at the "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance in Back to the Future, just before Michael J. Fox comes in. It was all very well done, it just didn't wow me.

Certainly something I would normally never gravitate towards. Didn't hate it. Don't know if I would listen again though 4/10

OK not bad

While I'm glad to have heard it, It's not going to find a place in my collection I would certainly have preferred some vocals in the collection, rather than just instrumentals Its good, just not really something that I need in my life

Wo simmer da? In 1958?? ah ja simmer. Demfall legitim dass ned so fühle, 1960 isch scho biz d Untergrenze vo musig woni no fühle. 2 mal Mr Saxobeat

Zuu jazzig experimentell sooorry. Bin nöd so bildet.

A good example of what it is and represents but not something I can sit and listen to. Reminds me too much of those days in the UK and in the early 60’s when all there was to listen to was the BBC Light programme and big bands were the thing along with crooners. Still my dad liked it so that’s good. Note to younger reviewers - when you’re slagging off dad rock you need to remember this Count Basie stuff was the dad rock when we were cutting our musical teeth. Dire Straits et al don’t appear so bad after all? 2/5 31/1/26

Fallout fiilikset.

Did not really like the lack of vocals, still amazing how a story can be told through pure depth of instruments

Chill jazz

Boring jazz/swing music. I don't think this really deserves a place on this list. It's a boring as all the other jazz I've been served up so far.

Very jazzy I thought some of the piano riffs were very simple and got a bit boring after a while Would be a good album for a classic Disney film thou 2.5/5

Sorry Count, jazz is just not my thing.

Big band music often sounds like background music to me. This is not an exception. It’s a pleasant listen but not a memorable one.

Big band musicianship is impressive but the blasting horns puncuating throughout each song gets old. I don't doubt this is a good album for the genre. It's just not for me.

amazing instrumentals, cover art is impactful

Look, jazz is jazz. We’ve been through this. What I will say is this is the most I’ve liked a jazz album so far, and if I could give it 2.5*, I would.

unfortunately just not really for me. great music, just not something i’d come back to.

2.5. Some solid grooves, but a little...boring. Didn't hate it, but couldn't quite get my blood pumping past the first track

27. not my thing

Maybe I’m just not fancy but it’s so boring

Hmm. I enjoy the basslines, the drums are fun and upbeat, the piano is alright... But I have always disliked the sound of the brass section of me in these big band recordings, they feel so abrasive to me and at such odds to the rest of it. It's the bit I end up concentrating on and it ruins the whole thing for me. The slow songs didn't have it, but the drums weren't as fun either.. not for me.

The Atomic Mr Basie. Jazz album, not my style but interesting layers of sound. I enjoyed after supper as it was calmer than the rest of the album and had less aggressive trumpets! Piano intro on whirly bird was good. You can tell it’s from 1958 it feels like it would be played on a record at a fancy dinner party.

101 Dalmatiner jazz med masser af messing instrumenter.

Big band Jazz isn’t really for me. I don’t hate it but would never put this on

too old times i feel racist

Just not for me but I can respect the skill.

Not my thing, but altogether seems like a decent jazz album.

Sure, fine. Boring. 2/5 stars.

1 Stern extra fürs cover

I have no idea what to expect. Ok. The musicianship here is 10/10. But I don’t enjoy this sort of big band jazz. I would probably love this in a live setting. Too tedious as the soundtrack for my afternoon walk. 2/5 to rate it in line with albums I’ve felt the same way about.

L'album a incroyablement mal vieilli, techniquement parlant. "Kid from Red Bank" ? Oui, ça balance. "Li'l Darlin'" ?

ok as background noise as i continue my job search

Overall, this was a pretty chill album, nothing too exciting, but I think that because it's a bit old and because it sounds like it's for the background of an intense movie, it just sounds like an old movie is playing in the background.

2+ Stars (6/15)

Meh instrumentaal

This all darts round rather nicely, no melodies though. Hard to rail against such an innovator so will simply say its not for me and leave it at that!

Not my thing.

Favorite song(s): None stood out to me When would I listen to it: Never, I usually listen to instrumental when needing to focus but this wasn’t conducive for that. More of a fun, energizing instrumental which just isn’t for me. Sounded great though!

1958? BIG Band? Jazz? Three strikes and you'rrrrre out! I don't get jazz. I can't even pretend to like it, it can't be on in a room without it driving me up a wall. The randomness and the repetition, the unnecessary solo's, the horns that just won't stop. Boring. Just not my thing. It's obviously popular with most tracks having over 1M plays. A few have 5, 18 and 8M plays, that's impressive. I don't understand it, but it's impressive. I got thru this one quickly. Not a single song I'd listen to twice. And to believe there was a time when this was super popular blows my mind. I'm sure he's great at what he does so I'll give it 2 stars.

Liian vanhaa kamaa itselle, jotta osaisi arvostaa tätä, yli muiden aikalaistensa.

I feel bad giving this only 2 stars as I normally like Basie. This is low production quality and mixed horn forward, so it doesn't sound like a balanced orchestra.

I liked it to a certain extent, but I just can’t get into this type of music. I’ve never been able to get into orchestras

Not a fan of Jazz and especially not when a Big Band is involved. So sorry...

Not bad but instrumentals are not for me

Not my music at all. Bluesy but no vocals.

Again I can appreciate the skills required but its not for me.

Little too jazzy for me, but can understand the beauty in it.

Nice jazz, don’t think I can appreciate it enough. Upbeat and good vibes!

Big band jazz, not much else to say about it. I feel like I turned out most of it, but that's what happens when there are no vocals.

It's ok, not convinced it's standout genre breaking or top of it's class but it's ok

I don't have strong feelings on the sound here, it is very 50s and there are moments that made me smile or that I enjoyed listening through but I think it's just fine overall - 5/10

Nice orchestrals, but didn't do much for me

Not for me.

Some interesting big band stuff in here, but that's not really my thing. Interesting listen, decent for background while working or reading, but there's lots of other jazz out there I prefer. This is not something I'm likely to revisit. 2/5

Not my style appreciate the artist.

Enjoyable but not entirely my kind of music. Don't know if I would go back to it.

An electric album title. A nice orchestral album that would probably a great live show. There are also a few tracks in here that would fit well for cocktail hour background music. Didn't mind it all all for a Monday morning. Not much else to say!

Count Basie is a legend. And a power. I know he's powerful because this music sounds like every other big band music Ive heard. Bombastic and unpleasant. I need someone to give me a better Basie album. 2/5

Came out in late 50s. Thought rock roll would have killed this. Too bad it didn’t. Nothing atomic about it. My grandmother would have nodded off to this with no trouble

just not my cup of tea. very frenetic/shaky, the whole album made me anxious except the last track. struggling to separate it from modern contexts where it has been co-opted like burlesque dance, cartoons, film noir, dance classes I took as a kid. this is one where maybe you just had to be there

i appreciate the art of this at the time, but it dind't hook me in just based on my bias against big band

not as good as I expected

not my vibe. good, but wouldnt listen again.

★★½

Every song kinda hits the same notes and just blends into one.

I don't get jazz but sure.

Not right now, maybe never

Not for me

4/10 The best jazz album I've heard so far, which ain't to say a lot. If perhaps we could remove the BLAST of the brass, I could tolerate it more, but there it is. Mostly reminds me of Police Squad and the intro music to all those 60s comedies on when I was a kid, so not all bad.

Känns välgjort men för sömnigt för min del.

Reiseradioen! First track is the theme song for a radio show that aired every summer when I was younger. What a flash back. After that one it became background noise

Not a jazz fan

2.3 I appreciate some of this music needs to be on here but it's just really not for me. Suits being a forgettable soundtrack to a random 60s movie to be honest.

I'm going to say this is fine. Jazz isn't typically my thing, so I wasn't surprised that this album didn't exactly make me excited. There's good musicianship here. However, there is a lot of that short, abrupt staccato that I just didn't personally enjoy all that much. I would say it was overused. Brass instruments are powerful, and are very harsh to listen to when they sound shrill. Overall, appreciate it as a band kid. Disliked it as a person who doesn't exactly love jazz.

Don’t really like just the orchestra.

01) The Kid from Red Bank - 5,5 02) Duet - 6,5 03) After Supper - 5,5 04) Flight of the Foo Birds - 5,0 05) Double-O - 5,5 06) Teddy the Toad - 5,5 07) Whirlybird - 5,0 08) Midnite Blue - 6,0 09) Splanky - 5,5 10) Fantail - 5,5 11) Li'l Darlin' - 6,0 TOTAL: 5,59 (56/100) Current ranking: 490/580

okay to listen to in the background, a bit boring but i guess a good instrumental. Probs wouldn’t go back to listen to it

367/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

While I respect Count Basie's contributions to music, this was an album I just couldn't really get into. Probably a genre thing, since brass-focused big bands don't entice me all that much. I generally find the style uninteresting. There were some good moments here, and I can't say it was bad music. The compositions really showed how talented the players were. Even so, I'm not really tempted to listen to it again and I didn't feel like it was a great album. Comparing it to some of the other albums I've gotten in the same general vein, this was one of my least favorite. I'll give it credit for what it did well, but can't personally rate it very high. Overall: 2/5

I expected I'd hate this, but I didn't. I even recognised track 2! Still don't need to hear the album again, but it's really not bad.

5/10 Im sure its good. I just failed to enjoy it Highlights: Double O Splanky

alright, not really my vibe

CBO + Neal Hefti! 2.5/5

Mad talented but not for me

Not really my style but not bad

I think I'd need to be on drugs to get anything out of this kind of music.

Not bad. Bit too old school jazzy for my tastes

Not for me - maybe it was the mood I was in. I can understand why so many love this album, as well as how important it is, it’s just not one I’d go looking for again in a hurry.

not my style of music. it's fine in the background, but I'd prefer a half dozen other types of jazz.

nice swing but it got boring

I dunno, maybe this got folk's heart racing in the 50s, but it just leaves me cold. I can't fault it, but it just does nothing for me.

Ah stop it with those 50s Jazz stuff

Not a fan of saxophone. I can see why this might be a good album but it isn’t my kind of taste in music.

What lead paint does to an mf

Perfectly fine big band album … but won’t listen again.

p31. 1957. 2 stars. I don't like jazz or big bands, so wrong audience. Seems well done though.

It was perfectly fine background music. It would go well in a Vegas show. I would never put it on though.

I accept this is good big band/swing. However I do not like big band/swing. The first few songs I thought were funky and then it just… kept… going. And no vocals!! I can’t.

Saxofoon

I think the level of enjoyment for this album is hugely based on where your exposure to jazz begins. If you’re a fan of “traditional”, big band jazz you’ll probably love this as an innovative release that came at the end of that era. But if you prefer the shift to more modern styles of jazz such as cool or modal jazz, this becomes a bit more meh. I’m in the latter category.

Decent jazz album 1001 album worthy: No - 49/88

Just instrumentals

Inoffensive big band schtick.

Totally fine jazz and swing music. Nothing so radical as splitting the atom. Nothing explosive. Nothing that blows you away.

Oh, Jazz you magnificent bastard. I knew 30 seconds into this album that it wasn’t for me. Great individual players. Anti synergy. I did like Flight Of The Foo Birds though.

Wait…just a second…pardon me…let me just…okay - got my white socks on, rolled up the legs of my blue jeans, white t shirt sleeves once turned, hair just so, slipped in to my black loafers…but…I think this foo bird has flown, something feels splanky about this music in this time.

2/5 not my style

Not impressed. Two out of five.

not bad, but not my kind of thing

Sinatra/big band/bluesy Jazz is just lost on me. I can hardly distinguish one song from another let alone an album or artist. I fuck with New Orleans style Mardi Gras-parade jazz, or someone going absolutely nuts on a horn but all that is to say I can’t even fairly rate this because my brain just doesn’t decipher it the way I do with other musical genres. It’s a 2 for me because it was fine I guess but it could have been amateur as hell and I wouldn’t know the difference. It’s a me problem.

Fine to have on in the background, but not particularly exciting.

Meh too old timey

Pleasant, but not at all memorable

Some pretty snazzy jazz that is perfect to hear in an old-style club or New Orleans themed restaurant. Nothing I'd seek out, but it's pretty nice while it's on

Wouldn't be bad as background music in some cafe, otherwise pretty boring

Not really a big band/ orchestra person. But it's not bad for that. Also has a killer name/ album cover for a record released in the 50s 4/10

Alright as background music

Great music if it's your thing - very swing, motion picturesc. not my thing.

When I imagine music from the ‘50s, this is what I think of. Thank God I wasn’t born then.

didn't quite like it

cool jazz album but not really my thing tbh

O.K. but not my jam.

Not in love with the genre but it feels well done. The performers sound talented and the arrangement seems fancy. Fav Track: The Kid From Red Bank

Boring! Just trad jazz from Mr Basie. I'm totally ready to be told that this is revolutionary, the first use of triplets in recorded jazz history, a powerful evocation of the era or whatever, but it just sounds like a few guys tooting out some standards to me. Sorry about that.

Just meh, not the worst jazz, but not amazing to me.

"It took Basie's core audience and a lot of other people by surprise, as a bold, forward-looking statement within the context of a big-band recording." I guess. It's still big-band though. Not that that's bad, but there's only so much you can do while staying within the bounds of the genre. I'm not convinced that bounds are very big. It's good, but not great.

Might be good as the background at a nice restaurant

This music does not resonate with me at all. I enjoy jazz, swing, and big band, but while this album isn't difficult to appreciate, it makes me feel anxious and never fully connects with me.

>Badass mushroom cloud album art >Look inside >Boring jazz music

Big Band und somit nicht meine Lieblingsmusik. Solide gespielt.

I won't say it's outright bad but this isn't for me. Best track was probably Flight of the Foo Birds. I liked some of the more downbeat stuff towards the end.

I feel like I’m listening to the chips a hoy ad from the 90s. Like, I get this type of music takes a lot of skill and thought but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Not a huge jazz lover

Best jazz album I've gotten so far but that is an extremely low bar. If there's one thing I've learned from this list, it's that I hate jazz.

It's fine, but not the vibe I could ever see myself being into.

Big band isn't really my thing

Since I stayed awake for the whole thing I guess I can spare 2 stars or D- as a rating.

there really wasn’t much with this album. it felt tiring to listen to because the only consistent aspect was the genre

This album makes me feel like I'm an 80 year old man who wears leather jackets and smells like cigarettes... and that's not a good thing. I feel like with this album there was either too much going on or not enough with no in between. I can respect jazz but this just didn't connect with me. Favourite song: duet

I put this on and forgot it was playing at various times. I guess that means it's pretty forgettable.

Lively big band stuff, not really enjoyable for me.

not my kind of music but well put together and everything.

didn't mind it, didn't love it

Big band greatness! I love the sound, but find it hard to distinguish one song from the next. It kind of just washed over me.

Unfortunately I didn't give this a full listen, but here are my thoughts from listening to the first half: I feel like this is well written music, however it really doesn't catch me. It just seems busy and kind of bland. I really should listen to it again and in full though.

What can I say beyond "music"

A pretty dope album when it wasn't trying it's hardest to give me a headache. So half dope. 2/5

Brilliant jazz. Like jazz? I don't. That said, there's some fun, big band dance music on here as well as the usual Sunday sleepers.

Objectively a good piece of music but I really could not be any less interested in a Jazz album from 1958.

It's not as good as I'd hoped but I do like Lil Darlin'. Sinatra and Basie is better.

Too Jazzy

Another record that would benefit seeing in a live format. These instrumental Jazz/Big Band records just aren't as interesting in audio format. I want to watch it. I want to see the emotion in the artists. I don't get any of that in just listening to this type of music. Which is a shame because it limits my enjoyment from it. I do like what's going on. The arrangements are interesting. But my enjoyment and curiosity is limited to just the sound. And I know there is a lot going on that I am just not getting. Oh well.

I'm not totally sure what to say, to my ears it's pretty standard big-band jazz. Maybe it was noteworthy in 1958. It's fine, but I wouldn't put it on again as anything other than background music to talk over.

No me gusta. Just don’t like it. I tried. I like some Glen Miller. But this just sounds too much like car crashes

This music makes me happy. Great to have on while working around the house.

Jazz / Big-Band. Alles instrumental.

portillos music.

STANDOUTS: n/a OVERALL: 2/5; nice lil inoffensive elevator music but nothing that stands out.

first listen.

Correcto.

Doubt I’ll listen to any of this again but it wasn’t awful.

I got very excited when I heard the name of this album but it turns out it is just jazz with a big band. Oh well. Listens: 1 Rating: 2

Just not a fan of jazz, got pretty bored and a little annoyed

Not a big fan of the big bands. The first song is very good though!

To my surprise, the fact that there were no lyrics wasn’t what I didn’t like about this album. I think that after seeing it was only 40 minutes, I was shocked how long it felt. The first two songs I was vibing with but after awhile it unfortunately just sounded similar and somewhat boring..

This simply isn’t for me - 2.5/5

Just fine. Not my genre, and maybe it's just me but the songs really blend together after a while. Cool album art and name though. 4/10 (2/5)

Was not sure what to expect going in, and still not sure what I got coming out of it

Cartoons have forever ruined this type of music for me. I can't take any of it seriously. Tom and Jerry absolutely bastarsized it. Not really my thing anyway.

Felt like I was trapped in a Tom & Jerry cartoon. There’s worse places I guess. I can respect the musicianship gone into this and I have endured so much worse on this 1,001 list. At least the wife didn’t walk in and tell me to switch this rubbish off, so I will give a solid 2.

I'm too scared of jazz

BL: Heard of Count Basie through word of mouth but never knowingly listened to his works, will be interested to hear. AL: unless I'm missing some major historical context this to me just feels like a regular, run of the mill Jazz album of its time, of which I don't feel particularly strong towards, most of the tracks blended into one and didn't provide any terms of notable listening. Quite dissapointed with this FT: didn't have one 2/5

Good but gets old

Another big band instrumental. No thanks.

Any one track taken in isolation is nice enough, the trouble is they all sound the same. Some have a slightly slower tempo, some faster.

Rating: 5/10 Meh.

Men in brass houses.

Still don't get old jazz

Very "oldschool movie type jazz"

This guy sure loves his horns

Only real comment I have about this is why the fixation on the atomic bomb. Like, if you're really going to name your band after and use a photo of an atomic bomb as album cover, your music really has to be da bomb, you know? And this really isn't...

Not really sure why this album is here, nor why it seems so highly regarded by the critics. Played, but it just seems to noodle on. Inoffensive. 2/5

# 164 : My first thought were man it so old. I can listen, but its not real good, Audio quality was low by modern standards. I'm not much of a fan of albums devoid of lyrics, I found it boring and a bit Too brassy.

I was waiting for it to be over

I don’t like this style of music

Not really into big band. Sounded cool at first, then got kinda boring.

Felt like I was in an old spy movie

Solid vibe. Would probably love this if I heard it as BGM for a videogame or something. Otherwise kinda boring though.

Didn’t mind this but kind of washed over me in its jazzy way. Extra star for the cover.

This would probably hold my attention late at night, rather than the early morning listen. It was pleasant enough in a cardigan wearing cuddly sort of way. It did sound very dated.

I am not a huge fan of "Big Band" music but I will give credit to the recording and musician-ship of the band. There were lots of solos spread across this album, piano, upright bass, trumpet, sax, trombone, clarinet, drum, and even a xylophone and bells. Just felt like something was missing .... oh yeah, lyrics.

I'm not the biggest big-band jazz person, but this was good to listen to

maybe on another day I could enjoy this, but this isn't one of those days.

Instrumental. Jazz. Not my favorite, but I appreciate being exposed to it. Good background work music.

Boring

Couldn't hack it, I'm sure many people froff it big time, it just ain't me

Just can't sink into this kind of jazz. Would never doubt the playing or composition, but it's a little too jaunty, and I end up frustrated. Two and a half. Fave track: Lil' Darlin

not my cup of tea…

Made me smile as it reminded me of Mum bopping round our kitchen when Jazz Record Request was on in the 70s. Cheery in general, but after listening I couldn't distinguish any one track over another and it felt a bit like aural wallpaper. Plus the cover is awful.

It’s funny that one of these songs is called “The Late Late Show” because all I can hear when I listen to big band music is The Tonight Show Band blaring out overly enthusiastic bombastic blaring noise to convince people that they are about to have fun. Hey big band musicians, why is your band so big? Why do you have like 20 horn players? How is having a band this big economical? You pay each horn player $10 and you’re out $400 bucks. That’s the whole fee you’re getting for the gig. How are you going to pay the other 87 musicians? Are you going to tell Satchmo Jenkins and Tootely Toot Jones that they aren’t getting paid tonight? I’m deducting one star for each musician involved in making this ruckus above 50. That takes us to negative 8 billion stars. BWHA BWHAH BAAA WAAA WAHH!!!!!!

I'm sure this is objectivley good but as a first time listener to big band swing it seems so over done. Sounds lie every movie sound track of my childhood. I'm sure Count Basie did it first but in 2023 it seems trite.

Men totalt i samma anda.

I don’t think this is for me. But I didn’t find it offensive to listen to at the gym and in fact had a pretty good workout

2/5 - just a bit boring really. Expected something more explosive based off the album cover, but just sounds like standard old-timey big band to my 21st century ears.

Enjoyable for a change - might be a classic but not my thing

wasn't a fan, not bad just not my style

easy listening jazzy stuff

Not my cup of tea
