Reviews (page 2 of 14)

Ça me rappelle l'époque musique plus big time. Sinon props à Dark of the Matinée et Michael.

Franz Ferdinand are great. Of all the great indie rock bands that came out of the UK in the noughties these are up there with the very best. Dancy, catchy, energetic, great guitar sound. What more do you need. I seem to be saying this a lot in my reviews but I saw this band at Glastonbury and they were brilliant. One of the best bands I saw that weekend and the crowd was absolutely bouncing.

album so good i get why it cosed a world war

oh hell yeah, that first song is already hitting! ohhhh that’s why i know them, Take Me Out is a classic! This whole album is fantastic - definitely my favourite from this list so far!

This album really kicked off alt-rock for so many people. The tracks are so varied, they’re absolutely ripping, and it’s just incredibly fun to listen to. I’ve heard a few songs many times, but never listened to the whole album. And I wish I had done so sooner. Two addendums, hearing them play a couple of these songs live was disappointing, and I’ve heard a different more up tempo This Fire, and it’s far superior. This version felt like it was in some muck. Same exact song, just 20% faster. All in all, just awesome.

10/10 good time, all bangers ✨

Godetoide breoo.

rare album where i started it over right after finishing. every song is unique and kept my attention almost the whole time. hard to pick a favorite since they're all so great

- I've always loved this album. It felt so fresh when it came out and it's still fun, sexy, and hits the spot. - Everything is really well done - guitar, bass, and vocals. - I enjoy the lyrics, too - unexpected and interesting. - Not a bad song on here... I like some better than others (there are a lot of bangers, for sure), but it all works well together. The flow is good, and I never skip anything when I listen to it. - A good length, too - doesn't overstay its welcome. It's fun and dancey, and then you just have to listen to it again. - For me, it's a 4.5, and I'm rounding up, especially after they ripped into the IOF for using their music!

Excellent from start to finish. 5.

Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5

Catchy as hell, haven't listened to this album in too long.

Take me out and other bangers

Excellent mid-2000s Indie Disco, a lot of fun.

Nice Album, Take me Out is like a rock stadium song now

I was expecting to be jaded about this album having it played relentlessly as a teenager. But I gotta admit it hits, catchy riffs, great lyrics, the whole band is doing something. Really anthemic and powerful the whole way through

Loved this Album for years. Loved it again listening to it yesterday. It now lives on as a cd in eh car.

Take Me Out was a song that got me through a rough part of life, so Franz Ferdinand will always have a spot in my heart.

Listened to this album plenty of times, and of course I had to listen to it again, because it is one of my favourite indie rock albums. You don't realise how many catchy riffs are crammed into this one album. It's not a long album and no song feels like filler, and it is quite simple and accessible to listen to. Bands like Frank Ferdinand, Kaiser Chiefs and The Hives were part of the garage rock revival of the early 2000s, so I am hoping they will eventually appear on this website as well.

A classic

jacqueline--i like this. lots of energy tell her tonight--also lots of energy take me out--oh i know this song! oh lol it has 1.3 Billion more streams than any other song on the album. honestly it's a bop tho, deserves it dark of the matinée--props for the clear stylistic tie with take me out, but not being *basically the same song, again* auf achse--ope got distracted cheating on you--so. much. energy. darts of pleasure--actually impeccable michael--great opening riff. i mean ok not enough songs about guys' hips, ya know. glad franz is working to fix that. gotta give it to franz ferdinand for making an impeccable example of the driving indie rock genre. usually not my favorite, usually too much depressing precedent from grunge, but i thoroughly enjoyed this. 5/5

Wall to wall bangers from beginning to end. I always find it hard to review albums I know well and have personal connections to. But I absolutely adore this album and the band. Take me out, matinee, darts of pleasure all rock so hard, and then this fire is a transcendent track. Wide variety, amazing lyrics, kick ass drums, just make an amazing album.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination is believed to have been the catalyst for World War 1. The band has no association with the long dead Archduke. Yet, they do kick ass. They have a sound almost all their own yet their songs differ in sound. 5

4.5. Very good album. Some really good songs in here. Lots of arctic monkeys, fratellis, clash, killers. Loved Come On Home, 40' and Take Me Out. 40' will take it.

PEAAAAAAK

Super excited for this one!! Ughhhh, the moment when the bass kicked in in Jaqueline. How it slightly pulled back and you could just hear the drums right before the guitar solo. Tell her tonight was also great, and then the lead in to Take Me Out. Amazing. I love Take me out but had never listened to the rest of the album. The guitar part in The Dark of the Matinee was supreme! I also loved that I could hear the bass. Auf Achse had a great driving feeling to it. Cheating on You was a great, shorter track. It was quite simple, yet funny lyrics wise. I really liked This Fire. It gave clubbing vibes. Darts of pleasure has a really cool distinct sound to it throughout. Michael had some of that nice punkish sound to it. Come on home was actually quite beautiful. I also liked how 40’ closed the album. Amazing album! 5/5 ⭐️ 130/1089

Banger of an album, loved seeing this lot live. 5/5

Take me out is how god communicates with on the ground. The rest of the album is good but that ones song brings it to a five.

Great and innovative indie rock album, nice surprise

hearing Take Me Out again made me google the band and then look at the wikipedia entry for post-punk revival like "ah yes this is the shit that i like". i dont know enough to speculate on originality but it really does sound like a template for catchy alt rock grown-in-a-lab choruses. there are skips that still fill out that template well and are only really skips placed next to other just absurdly snappy songs. maybe it's not my favorite but The Dark of the Matinée fascinates me; it's the laziest execution of "boring verse build-up, ecstatic chorus payoff, repeat 3 times" with virtually no surprises, but that payoff is so fuckin sick i can never get mad at it. soft 5

One of the classics of the good old British indie rock era. Still amazing. Still got the power and vibe. Amazing to sing to. full with all time bangers. Super fantastic

What a gem! These songs are full of youthful, creative, dynamic energy. Their interaction is close to flawless, with melodies and accents skillfully connected without losing a bit of their bite. Plus, there is a huge wave of nostalgia when listening to their songs... I was so shocked when I realized how many songs had an off-beat, and it's a revelation to hear that off-beat can actually sound good!

listened to this one already i feel so cultured :) i love when i song goes fast the need for speed my beloved

I don't want to vote, I just want to listen

bangers only

Loved this album

I'm just a sucker for noughties indie

yes yes yes EXACTLY what i like, perfect pick

loved most of it. reminds me of my childhood

Amazing album, brings me back to Summer of 2004 after HS graduation! Take Me Out and Float On were ALWAYS on MTV/VHI and those similar riffs used to bug me, but both amazing songs.

It has an identity strong enough that even the lesser songs still feel like part of a world. The band sounds completely sure of its aesthetic. Everything is sharp-edged, danceable, and faintly amused with itself. That coherence matters.

Yeah. Fun.

Was suprised how many songs I already knew, without ever having heard of the band. Such a destinct sound, without being random. So much fun to listen to.

QUE ÁLBUM MÁS INCREIBLE

Pretty sure I still have this one on CD somewhere, but it's been a while since I've listened to the whole thing straight through. Love it. That transition in Take Me Out is so perfectly executed. 🧑‍🍳💋

Absolute stomper

I have listened to this album many times over sixteen years. Top tier

Me gustó, ya había escuchado algunas canciones

Amazing album from start to finish. I remember being in college when this came out and thinking that it was one of the best examples of the then current indie phase of Modest Mouse, The Strokes, The White Stripes, etc…. Over 20 years later it still holds up. I’m still impressed by the riffs and songwriting. It’s great.

Interesting I like was upbeat and fun.

So, so, so good.

so goodddddd

WORDS ARE POISONED DARTS OF PLEASURE I've had no problem over the years in recognizing that music that I used to love was not good at all but this is not the case with FF's debut. Franz Ferdinand definitely deserves to be here, even more if you consider the amount of bullshit you'll find in this list. I'll be honest and say this is one of my favorite albums ever. Do I think it's a groundbreaking masterpiece? no. Would it still be one of my favorites if it wasn't in this list? yes. FF has marked my teenagehood and my adult life as well. Seeing them live as an adult was a cathartic experience for me I never thought I needed so much Even so, I can see putting any other of their albums in the 1001 Albums list would definitely be a stretch even though I really enjoy them

Perfect; thrilling, every song captivates. It was a breath of fresh air back in 2004 and it’s a breath of fresh air now. Have you ever heard a band that just sounds so COOL?

This album is very funny, beautiful production, poetic lyrics but often nonsensical but it's very much in my style, I like it

fantastic album all around

I looove Franz, this is going to be an easy 5* for me. Jacqueline had such a weird start for their typical sound, I was confused, until about a minute in. Their sound is so fun and distinctive. Highlights: take me out, this fire, the dark of the matinee (that buildup to the chorus!)

This album rocked.

Always good to listen right through, such a great album …

Fun rocker. I didn't expect it to be this much fun, and I'd heard "Take Me Out" and "This Fire" before. Solid rock, with a wink and a nod, all the way through. Whoever said this was the worst out of the indie rockers of the turn of the century was an idiot.

I KNOW THIS ONE SONG!

very good, if I liked it, it must mean it's some indie rock liked a lot of songs, not only the popular song from social media I like Take Me Out, 40 feet and some other added, will listen again

Love the album since it came out. Classic

I know this album quite well. An early 00's retro punk-funk-dance classic. Was a really fun breath of fresh air when they first came around. 5 star album, very awesome!

Супер

Favorite Track: Take Me Out

Not musically obvious + totally my vibe. Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes kind of feel. “The Dark of the Matinee” fav! I think I’ll be listening. 9/10

One of my favourite ever albums. Michael is genuinely one of the best singles of the 2000s. Take Me Out, This Fire, Jacqueline, 40ft etc are all top draw.

Destroyed my Zune with this album

I like this - catchy melodies, indie rock that isn't just noise. Not every song sounds the same. It reminds me in places of Adam Ant.

So fun! Somehow both bored and so invested in what they're doing

Love the album, happy yet not too catchy. Such classics. Still has some grit to it.

Great dance rock album for me Favorite songs : Jacqueline Tell Her Tonight Take Me Out Cheating on You This Fire Michael Come On Home 40'

Very cool album

Best band ever. The album I've listened to tons of times and I'm not gonna stop.

Take me out is an amazing track and I vaguely remember the other singles but first time listening to the album as whole and I really liked it.

Really energising good vibes

Solid record

Great album with succinct songs, good melodies, atypical lyrics, and a cool album cover. 4.5/5.0: Excellent

very cool album. its got an infectious nature that makes it hard not to tap your foot along to.

Franz Ferdinand is a very interesting band to me. This was the defining band of the PS2 era for me specifically. I swear to God, these guys had a song in just about every video game I played around the year 2005. I’ve added probably 15 of their songs from multiple albums on my Spotify from them already. The song “40’” was in my Top 5 most played songs last year, and there’s always a random smattering of Franz Ferdinand songs that end up on my playlist somehow, one way or another. All that being said, obviously I’m a very big fan of this band. Nothing weird about that right?? Actually, for how much I adore this band, I don’t really know a single thing about them, and I’d never heard an album of theirs from front to back until now. Couldn’t tell you anything about them other than the fact that every single time I hear one of their songs, I end up listening to it for the next month because I enjoy it so much. I don’t know what it is about this band, they just sound so unique to me. They’re having a lot of fun on this first album, which not only clearly shows in the music itself, but enhances it and makes it sound amazing. To paraphrase what another reviewer said, all of these songs sound very different from each other, while at the same time sounding very much like a Franz Ferdinand song. It’s just one of those bands man. I don’t know how any of them do it, but it’s just one of those bands you hear for a millisecond, and if you’ve ever heard a song by them, you’re instantly like, “Wait, that’s Franz Ferdinand. I haven’t heard this one before, time to add it to my library and listen to it for the next entire month until I get it out of my head. Otherwise I’ll be singing it at work unconsciously.” This album is great. My favorites include “Jacqueline”, “Take Me Out”, “This Fire”, and “40’”. My favorite song in general is going to vary from day to day, but “Take Me Out” is just so iconic and nostalgic, it’s hard not to call it the best song on the album because of that. This is going to once again send me into a spiral where all I’m going to do when not working on this project is listening to all of the Franz Ferdinand albums on a loop for the next couple of months. It’s unexplainable just why this is one of my favorite bands. I hardly get it myself, I just think they sound really really good. Love the singer, love the funky chord progressions, love the variance of sounds, it’s just everything I’m looking for on an album. All killer, no filler. It’s my third 5 star album in a row. Keep it coming!!!!

A great album. Good memories of seeing them before it came out, one of the better post punk revival bands.

This album is like an old friend that you bump into and wonder why you don’t see more often.

ya era uno de mis favoritos 💕

going to their concert soon!!

One of the best 2000s indie rock albums. Pure energy from start to finish. Favorite tracks: Take Me Out, Auf Asche, This Fire, 40'

INPUT = {"artist": "Franz Ferdinand", "album": "Franz Ferdinand"} LINEUP = {"men": 4, "women": 0} FEATURED_ARTISTS = {"men": 0, "women": 0} TOTAL_MEN = 4 TOTAL_WOMEN = 0 WOMEN_PERCENTAGE = 0 OUTPUT = "Maximum score awarded. 5/5"

Catchy pop punk. The music videos are fun too (although the way the members of the band look/act is a little cringe 20 years later). 5/5

Thêm một album rock, first impression khá tốt, nhạc dạo vào điềm tĩnh, nhẹ nhàng khúc sau rock it up =))) Lyrics chưa được ấn tượng, lặp khá nhiều, nhưng vẫn có những bài rất oke

Other than the big track everyone knows, this is a damn fine piece of 2000's rock. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 10, with maybe just *one* little flaw. I only knew “Take Me Out” going into this, as I imagine most people would – maybe one of the other singles is in there somewhere, but their biggest hit is “Take Me Out”, and it stands as a ubiquitous anthem / representation of the 2000s. It’s an all-timer of a track, and thankfully, it’s supplemented by 10 other tracks that are either at the same level or just a step or two below that same level of quality, making for a fucking killer debut album. If the “worst” one here is only as bad as it is because nobody really wants to have a track about being a cheater in their playlist (& because the album tackles it a bit more tastefully with “Tell Her Tonight” earlier on), whilst still kinda rocking in its own weird way, then you’ve got a stellar lineup going. The music more than speaks for itself, with every track finding a super infectious groove – the bass is awesome, the guitar riffs are sick, the percussion has a good punch / pace to it, and Alex Kapranos’ lead vocals have a range that feels like it can channel David Bowie, Chris Martin & Morrissey (for once, as a compliment) at the same time, whilst still being able to hit higher pitches & quirkier tones that feel kinda like David Byrne in the “More Songs About Buildings And Food” era of Talking Heads. His vocals don’t carry the album, but they do elevate it, which is kinda rare for an album that feels so instrumentally driven. I don’t really want to go too deep track-by-track here, so I’ll just quickly explain what I liked about my favorite ones, even though the whole album was great from top-to-bottom. “Jacqueline” is a really good (& kinda morbidly funny) opener. “The Dark of the Matinee” feels like an Arctic Monkeys cut in the best way. “Auf Achse” has a fun dichotomy between the funky mood & the sad lyrics, whilst reminding me a lot of The Human League. “Darts of Pleasure” feels like a Talking Heads cut in an awesome way, & “Michael” fucking rules as an explicitly erotic track with a super catchy vibe. The *one* little thing I mentioned is in the track order; I think “Come on Home” should’ve ended the album. I think it just makes more thematic sense after the implied suicidal thoughts of “40’”, and the melancholic tones feel like they’d make for a good bookend with “Jacqueline”. Regardless, “40’” is still a pretty good closing track, and as a whole, the entire album just fucking rules. I’m mad at myself for not listening to the whole thing until today, but I’m glad to have rectified it, I’m glad it’s on the list, and it’s easily deserving of all the acclaim it gets. It’s a 10, and it’s right up there with “Hot Fuss” as one of those timeless albums of the era. 2004 was pretty good for rock, huh?

Favourite Song: Take Me Out

solid 3 without this fire and take me out

Clásico

One of my favorite bands of all time

Already fan of this album. Peak. Michael is stuck in my head always.

If Franz Ferdinand didn’t want to get shot he shouldn’t have written a song called “Take Me Out”!

guitar scratched my brain so hard, i had to listen to it three times in a row

so happy I finally listend to that album

Take me out…a classic🌟

Oh hell yeah, now we're talkin'! Top: Michael Not Top: Jacqueline

I like it when a band sounds like its members all like to read, but also like dancing. Alex Kapranos especially sounds like he's probably got a fantastic bookshelf in his home. This album came out when I was 20. I love it just as much as a 42-year-old as I did back then. I'd give this six stars if I could.

this rocked my god damn world. the song about the twink? chefs kiss

I'm editing my review to add this fun story: when I was a child I heard the song Take Me Out while I was sleeping at a cousin's house and woke up wanting to remember it so bad bc it was unlike anything I was allowed to listen to in my deeply catholic family. we used to get these lists of new songs, movies, books, etc that we were allowed or not allowed to listen to every week at church, so the media I consumed until about middle school was very limited. by the time we left the church and I started being allowed to listen to popular music, I had forgotten the lyrics and the beat of Take Me Out and was never able to find this song. I have a memory or two of turning on the radio and this song was ending but the dj must've announced the song before playing it bc they didn't announce it after, instead it went right into the next song. It's honestly haunted me for almost two decades trying to figure out what that song was. I finally figured it out listening to this album for 1001 albums and I've since been playing this song A LOT. It's not that I think it's the greatest song ever or anything, it's more just the feeling of solving a mystery that's lasted almost 20 years that I associated heavily with my religious upbringing. Thank you 1001 albums. Fuck the Catholic Church, please donate to your nearest independent abortion clinic, the Midwest Access Coalition, or your nearest small LGBTQ+ resource center.

Most surprising album so far

Undeniable classic of a debut, hit after hit!

timeless classic of indie rock. 5/5

Jupi! Mam na cdju, mi je ljub album. V najstniških letih mi je bil ful všeč ta tip rocka k je v early 2000s mel svoj obdobje (sm bi dala recimo še kake Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes, The Hives, Kings of Leon, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys - and it's not in my head, očitno je to post-punk revival (in ne, nism tok fuknena, da sm mislna, da sm sama odkrila skupne točke tem bandom, I just never googled it :))). In, oh, še zdaj en ljubših komadov, "Take Me Out". Prou vidim v glavi videospot. Ta odrezanost ritma mi je bla zmer amazing. "The Dark of the Matinée" je ful fajn. Pozabla sm kok je "Darts of Pleasure" amazing. Pa "Michael". Pa začetek "Come On Home". Pa kok mi je "40'" v bistvu hud. V glavnem, I love it.

album of 2025

The sound of university indie discos, early downloads and time with friends. Not the most original sound, but the album is filled with absolute bangers

starting to wonder why ive never listened to franz ferdinand this goes hard i really like this album woowww favs! genuinely dont know how to pick because at what point do i just put down every song on the album.... it just kept getting better and better as it went 😭 if i HAVE to choose.... take me out, auf asche, michael and '40 are up there

I discovered Franz Ferdinand relatively late in they career, and I was NOT impressed. Really didn't understand what the "buzz" was all about. But now I get it..... It is because this is good shit! I'm not surprised that after an album like this group took off like crazy. This is awesome stuff, pure raw energy. Really, really good!

Banger

Bangers head to toe.

I've of course heard "Take Me Out", but everything else is new and I'm liking nearly every song on this album "Michael" was an unexpected surprise, that and "Come On Home" were my favorites

Got one of the best intros and transistions in rock on that huge single "Take Me Out", and the rest of the album isn't too far behind in terms of quality. Impressive. This could have backfired as ultra-pretentious dribble but they can actually make a tune and write a great hook

No. 37 Great album with enjoyable hooks and gritty guitar work.

A damn good album and Take Me Out is an absolute banger.

Franz Ferdinand > Joy Division

Still a great listen.

What a debut! Love, love, love this album. 5 stars, no notes. Favorites: Jacqueline (what a great opener), Dark of the Matinee, Auf Achse, This Fire, Michael Would I listen to it again: Yes

ating: 4.6/5 Short Review: A hyper-confident blast of sharp-edged indie rock that turns every sidewalk into a runway and every mood into a smirk. Favorite Track: Take Me Out

One of the main bands of my adolescence! And the album is a hit after hit after hit!

A stone cold classic

Def thought this was an assassinated prince. Not a band. I guess it’s both! Loved it. Great vibe.

I remember this album from high school. Came out in that era of The Strokes, Hives, Jet. This really holds up as a great example of the early 2000s alt-rock.

There isn't one song on this album I don't like.

Didn’t get to listen to it with the gang however probably one of my most favourite albums

Top album

Franz Ferdinand’s debut still startles with its brilliance and simplicity. I shouldn’t be surprised to see it on its list, as it quietly rewired post-punk and alternative rock for the 2000s, led by the sly, irresistible snap of “Take Me Out.” The whole album hums with humor and joie de vivre—“The Dark of the Matinée,” “Jacqueline”—even as it lets heartbreak seep through on “Auf Achse.” The melodies feel both remembered and newly invented, as if the band is dusting off a forgotten future. By the time “Michael” and “This Fire” arrive, everything burns a little hotter, their dada-tinged videos matching the music’s manic grin. “40’” closes the record with minimalist tension, with lead singer Alex Kapranos offering lyrics that refuse to explain themselves. You either fall into their rhythm or you’re left outside, listening. Even the stark cover seems to declare a new era: bold, stripped down, self-aware. And astonishingly, it was only the band’s first step, with their finest hour still ahead in 2013's Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action. Fantastic album if you're interested in indie, alternative, or post punk for the 21st century.

Lots of fun - got lots of cleaning done with this on

Muito bom. A primeira música me fisgou bem rápido

Superfantastisch!

9/10 Punchy and fun - classic indie guitar pop rock from the 00s

I’m a big fran of Fanz Ferdinand

The aspect of this album that stands out to me the most is how much I like the lead singer's voice. Must be the Scottish accent :P The melodies and harmonies are quite pleasing and I quite like the guitar throughout the album too. I have heard Take Me Out so many times and still really like the song, and there are several other standout tracks for me: The Dark of The Matinee, Auf Achse (apparently that translates to 'on the road' in German), Darts of Pleasure, Michael, Come On Home, and 40'. So pretty much every song. If anyone is wondering what the German phrases mean in Darts of Pleasure, they translate to "My name is Super Fantastic, I drink champagne with salmon". Turns out I'm an indie rock fan now because I've recently started liking The Strokes, The Arctic Monkeys, The Smiths, The Black Keys, Radiohead, and now apparently Franz Ferdinand! Younger me would never have expected this turn of events lol. I'll give this album 9/10.

Clásico instantáneo

So crazy. I was listening to this album the day before it was assigned just because I love it. I used to have this CD. Am I allowed to give it a 5?

Did not expect to come across this one on the list, but I'm not complaining. This album comes with a wave of nostalgia. I remember when Take Me Out first came out, I was obsessed. I took my $15 to the nearest record store and bought this album without a second thought. Man I do somewhat miss those days of gambling on a record for the singles -- streaming has robbed us (saved us?) from that spin of the roulette wheel. In this particular case, that spin was surprisingly lucrative -- a tight 40 minutes of glammy punk-pop with some incredibly catchy choruses and satisfying rhythms that is fun from start to finish. Tell Her Tonight is the first stand-out. An incredibly catchy track built around a slinky funk guitar about getting caught having an affair and coming clean. Then there's Take Me Out, the lead single that propelled Franz Ferdinand onto everyone's radar. At the time I had never heard anything quite like it and loved the tempo play. Very dancey and very fun track. The Dark of the Matinee is another dancey jam that errs a bit more sensual. These guys clearly had commitment issues -- Cheating on You offers a propulsive, fuzzed out variant on the theme. This Fire is another favorite on here -- just a fun little propulsive bopper. Come On Home has always been one of my favorites -- instrumental is wonderful and the chorus is catchy AF. And 40' is such a fun way to end the album with a light spaciousness to it. Love this album and it is either the highest of 4s or the lowest of 5s for me. Going soft 5 with the nostalgia bump.

Have never listened to any Franz Ferdinand except for Take Me Out, which I have now learned is the 6th or 7th best song on this album after listening. This album ruled and hit way above my expectations. The high pace style that was played the whole time was perfect. Jacqueline was a great song to start off and Dark of the Matinee was a really fun number. Bopped along nicely to the rest of the album and there were no misses. I feel like an absolute fool now that I did not go see them at Shaky Knees in September. On the low side of 5 but it did just enough to get up there

Shits bomb bro

- Hatte noch nie was von der Band gehört aber war dann ganz überrascht als ich Take me out hörte - Hat mir richtig gut gefallen und richtig gute Laune gemacht - Das Ganze Album würde ich so auf jeden Fall nochmal hören Topsong: Jacqueline

Still holds up twenty years on. Take me out a certified banger and dark of the matinee not too far behind. Slightly biased from a Glaswegian but still really enjoyed. Specific rating - 4.7 Fav song - take me out Least fav - come on home

5/5. I was 15 year old on tumblr, u have so much history with this record, couldn’t give it anything less

Do you wanna...do you wanna Just as great as when it was released...

Hot damn!

A great time. Succinct and enjoyable, great guitars, great lyrics, great rhythms.

Love this album. It's gonna be biased but it's a 5 star for me.

BANGER AFTER BANGER

I'm a little biased. Had this cd in high school.

I've always loved Fraz Ferdinand, and this was one hell of a debut.

Herlig album. Klar 5’mer.

The tonic I needed after a prog rock heavy week. Fun, simple and catchy as hell. Not all music needs to be madly intricate and confusing and difficult to interpret!!

One of favorite albums of all time. There's not a single bad track on here. This band has always brought a fresh and unique approach to indie rock, and they're my favorite Scottish band to boot, by far. In the last 20 years, I've listened to this album dozens of times, and it never gets old. For anyone that wants a clean, well-executed and eminently listenable indie rock album, just put this on and you won't regret it.

Omg I knew the take me out song but the rest is so fire

Classic, competent 2000s indie. A four star album that I'll give an extra star for nostalgia.

I listen to this record so much when it first came out. It was great to revisit it. Still holds up.

Foregone conclusion - I adore this album

Whole album is great, not just Take Me Out

So many great songs, love this album

# In-Depth Review: *Franz Ferdinand* by Franz Ferdinand ## 🎵 Overview **Franz Ferdinand**'s self-titled debut album, released in 2004, is a landmark record in the **post-punk revival** movement of the early 2000s. Combining sharp guitar work, danceable rhythms, and witty lyrics, the album quickly became a critical and commercial success, winning the **Mercury Music Prize** in 2004 and selling over 3.6 million copies worldwide . Its influence on indie rock and its enduring appeal make it a standout record of its era. --- ## 📝 Lyrics and Themes ### Lyrical Style The lyrics on *Franz Ferdinand* are a blend of **playful banter** and **poignant observation**, often exploring themes of **relationships, self-discovery, and the human condition** with a touch of irony and wit. Alex Kapranos, the lead vocalist and lyricist, draws inspiration from post-punk predecessors like **Joy Division** and **The Smiths**, but adds a modern sensibility that feels both intellectual and accessible . ### Key Themes 1. **Hedonism and Nightlife**: Tracks like "Jacqueline" and "Take Me Out" capture the exhilaration and mundanity of nightlife, with lyrics like *"It's better on holiday / that's why we only work when we need the money"* juxtaposing escapism with reality . 2. **Sexuality and Desire**: Songs like "Michael" and "Darts of Pleasure" explore sensuality and eroticism with a playful yet provocative tone. The repetition of phrases like *"I'm never gonna dance again"* in "Take Me Out" adds to the tension between desire and hesitation . 3. **Alienation and Intellectualism**: "The Dark of the Matinée" critiques superficiality and fame, with Kapranos singing about *"a daydream of fame and disillusionment"* against the backdrop of mundane daily life . ### Strengths and Weaknesses - **Strengths**: The lyrics are clever, catchy, and often layered with double meanings. They balance intellectual depth with dance-floor accessibility. - **Weaknesses**: Some critics argue that the lyrics occasionally rely too heavily on repetition (e.g., "Take Me Out") or lean into clichés, though this is minor . --- ## 🎸 Music and Sound ### Musical Style The album is a fusion of **garage rock, dance-punk, and post-punk**, with a distinct **Scottish flair** that sets it apart from its American counterparts. The band emphasizes **simplicity and purity** in their instrumentation, often using singular notes instead of chords to create a more powerful impact . ### Key Tracks 1. **"Take Me Out"**: The album's signature song features a dramatic tempo shift from a frantic rock riff to a danceable groove, showcasing the band's ability to merge rock and dance music seamlessly. 2. **"The Dark of the Matinée"**: A mix of 2000s alt-rock and 50s show tune melodies, with a catchy chorus and intricate guitar work. 3. **"Michael"**: A danceable tune with a homoerotic undertone, driven by a steady beat and repetitive lyrics. 4. **"This Fire"**: A high-energy track with Talking Heads-inspired vocal harmonies and a noisy, climactic finish . ### Instrumentation - **Guitars**: Jagged, crisp, and clean guitar lines are central to the sound, often taking over "vocal duties" when the singing stops. - **Bass**: Rhythmically driven bass lines underscore the danceability of songs like "Cheating on You." - **Drums**: The percussion, particularly on "Michael," provides a steady beat that amplifies the dance-punk vibe . --- ## 🎛 Production The album was produced primarily by **Tore Johansson** in Gula Studios, Malmö, Sweden. The production is **polished yet punchy**, with a keen attention to detail that allows each instrument to shine. The decision to record in Sweden contributed to the album's **focused and cohesive sound**, as the band could immerse themselves fully without distractions . ### Production Techniques - **Minimalism**: The band avoided overproduction, keeping the sound "pleasantly simple and impactful" . - **Clarity**: Each instrument is distinctly audible, creating a balanced mix that feels both raw and refined. - **Danceability**: The production emphasizes rhythmic elements, making the album irresistibly danceable . --- ## 🧠 Themes and Concept The album explores themes of **youthful exuberance, nightlife, and the duality of human emotions** (e.g., desire vs. disillusionment). It captures the essence of the post-punk revival era while adding a unique Scottish perspective. The band’s mission to create "music for girls to dance to" is evident throughout, blending intellectual lyrics with dance-floor energy . --- ## 📈 Influence and Legacy - **Post-Punk Revival**: The album is a cornerstone of the early 2000s post-punk revival, alongside bands like The Strokes and Interpol . - **Cultural Impact**: "Take Me Out" became an anthem for the era, featured in video games, commercials, and festivals. - **Longevity**: Two decades later, the album remains iconic, influencing subsequent indie rock bands and maintaining a strong presence in popular culture . --- ## ✔️ Pros and Cons ### Pros 1. **Innovative Sound**: Successfully blends rock and dance music, creating a unique and infectious style. 2. **Catchy Hooks**: Nearly every track is memorable, with sing-along choruses and danceable rhythms. 3. **Lyrical Wit**: Lyrics are intelligent, playful, and emotionally resonant. 4. **Cohesive Production**: The minimalist, punchy production keeps the album focused and engaging. 5. **Cultural Impact**: Defined the sound of mid-2000s indie rock and remains influential today . ### Cons 1. **Repetitive Elements**: Some tracks rely heavily on repetitive lyrics or similar melodic structures. 2. **Lack of Diversity**: While cohesive, the album occasionally feels uniform in sound, with fewer experimental risks compared to later works . --- ## 💎 Conclusion *Franz Ferdinand* is a **near-perfect debut** that captures the energy and creativity of the post-punk revival era. Its blend of sharp lyrics, danceable rhythms, and polished production makes it a timeless record that continues to resonate with listeners. While it has minor flaws, its strengths far outweigh them, solidifying its place as one of the most important indie rock albums of the 2000s .

Very good. Thoughtfully frentic songwriterly stuff.

Yep, this one slaps. One of the best alt-rock albums to come out of the aughts, although I'm probably overrating it. 4.8

Yeahhhhh 5 star

9/10 I certainly have a bit of a soft spot for alternative rock this is very much in the same vein as Arctic Monkeys, and I like that the singer sounds a lot like Mel Tormé— especially Lullaby of Birdland <3

Lp that started a wave of mediocre indi of 00s. Overal best of them all.

Yeah that's the jam of my teenage years and do I ever love it still

Excelente opera prima. Me hace acordar mucho a Talking Heads.

This was good and enjoyable! It is very rare for me to find something that is good and enjoyable on this album generator. Many times, things are good and I do not enjoy them. Or they are not good and I do not enjoy them.

Amazing. Love "Take me out".

Daaaaamn!!!! Such a good album!! Added to library!!! great vibes and everything and the voice of the singer is very pleasant!! I like the text and the melody!!! It's a great album

First album I fell in love with. I remember listening endlessly on my Sony Walkman portable CD player. A lot of albums from UK guitar bands in the 90s haven’t stood the rest of time, but this isn’t one of them. An all time great in my opinion and more than deserving of its place on the list. Shout out to Bob Hardy, bass guitar on this record is class.

A super solid 5 star.

One of my favorite albums from this era. This was one of the first indie rock albums I got into and opened up a new genre for me. Catchy as hell.

HECK YEAHHH 5 STARS!! I love this album so much, I’ve listened to this so many times and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it ♪(๑ᴖ◡ᴖ๑)♪

There's definitely a bit of nostalgia factor with this one, as it was in heavy rotation for me in high school when it came out, but it holds up 21 years later.

Absolutely fire🔥

This was great, I never had listened to the whole thing

This was good! I saved three songs so I have to give 5 stars. Idk that this is top tier 5 stars, it's bottom tier 5 stars, but 5 stars nontheless.

Wasn't expecting it in here, but it would have been in mine! It's fun, funky, dancey, catchy, arty, poppy but all in a great way. This album was an a big one in my formulative years and probably explains why I love it so much. Even taking that out of it, it's a banger. Genuinely believe if you wanted pop music made by rock people for rock people, this is what you'd get.

Feel good indiens heliga graal. Älskar detta album. Bara hits, men ändå smart

A great album

dark of the matinee and take me out go so hard it's not funny

Goated album

My teenage self is flailing in joy

This album is so so good. At first, I only knew Take Me Out. I then heard This Fire, which I didn’t like nearly as much as Take Me Out, even though it’s still a great song. Then one day months later, I decided to listen to the whole album. I didn’t really give it my full attention when I first listened, and came out of my listening experience only knowing a couple more songs than I had before, those being Jacqueline and The Dark Of The Matinée. A couple of months later, I decided to relisten to this album. And that’s when it clicked. Each of the 11 songs that make up the 38 minute runtime of Franz Ferdinand’s self titled debut is so good. They all sound different, but also unmistakably Franz Ferdinanz. Honestly such an amazing piece of music, and I’m glad that I ended up revisiting it after it not clicking at first. This album is so fun, and also so new in its sound and overall vibe. Easy 10/10

Zuhause, Heidenheim, Deutschland. Fantastische Scheibe!

SO GOOD. I’m a sucker for 2000s Brit pop alt crap. Very of the ara of arctic monkeys/kaiser chiefs/ etc. dance-y, nostalgic, and very fun (without feeling dumb)

I have this album! Bangers from start to finish!

Solid and groovy Dance-Punk with raunchy riffs and loved up lyrics. 10/10

Pashamin

Took this album for granted for a long time but every song could be a single. Some iconic songs on here and still fresh as when it was released.

No private session used for Spotify. I have this excellent album on CD somewhere and it was my vote for 2004's album of the year. I don't know if won, I don't care, if it wasn't this album then whoever these experts are were wrong.. This album rocks, happy to see it come up.

Such a great rock album! Unique sound, great beats, fun to listen to every single song.

The perfect blend of dance and rock. Felt like I was in college and at a concert.

Eu gosto deste disco, me remete à alguma obra perdida dos Strokes. 5/5

One of the first “modern” rock albums I got to listen to as a kid.

niceeee

Been a while since I listened to this, and I feel I've drifted away from Franz Ferdinand a bit, so I was pleasantly surprised to be reminded what a banger this album is - not really a bad song on it. Nicely spiky.

Solid bangers. Some obvious favorites, but I would listen to the whole album again.

It’s always better on holiday

Pointy!!!! This would be a 4.5 but I’m rounding up

Well earned Mercury. Catchy hooks and riffs, rhythms and harmonies that make you want to dance, and evocative lyrics. Would buy on vinyl

Klassiker

molto molto bello non sapevo di conoscere take me out

I haven’t got any WiFi today. That means I’m on my phone today. This was the first album I completely enjoyed on the first listen. I still remember that day. “This Fire” is my favourite song from this album. 5 stars for “Self Titled”.

Banger after banger. A classic.

Angular indie rock and I bloody love this album

It’s wild how representative Take Me Out is of the sound of the album.

I've only heard their main hit which is enough to sell me on the album. But the rest of it is also very good. That indie / garage rock style fits very well with his vocal style. The songs are well written. What else is there to say. "Take me out" will certainly make the 1001 playlist. A full 5 stars from me.

Really cool mix of styles while still being consistent. Goes from 60s British Invasion to Black Keys to Arctic Monkeys. What a debut

clássico

Underrated Scottish Badasses!! Could listen to this album on repeat endlessly

Why have I not listened to this album in years! Why am I like that? Excellent album!

Such an easy listening, early thoughts indie/dance album. Every song is practically a hit.

Très bon album

Finally, some real good album. The last one was judas priest album. It's sound is so distinguishable, so unique, especially the drums, I just love how them. I don't really have that kind of rock songs in my playlist, like this or blur. Some fresh air. All of their songs are happy, energetic, catchy. This is one of the few albums i want to hear more than one time. I might even want to listen to their other albums or similar bands, like blur. I just looked up, they're scottish? What? I thought they were german, or austrian. In one of their songs they have german words. Anyway, they're cool. Songs saved: 7/11

Album was a surprise. Last 2 tracks hit hard for me. A complete album with enough variance in style. Way more fun than I anticipated.

Great debut. Lovely to revisit it.

One of my middle school staples. While Take Me Out is the big hit, the rest of the songs easily match the energy and catchiness. Not a skip in my opinion.

Franz Ferdinand is like the girl who was way too hot for you in high school. She smiled at you once and you’ve never been the same. You know you were never cool enough, but god damnit if you didn't feel alive then. You keep the valentine she wrote you in 6th grade in the glovebox of your car, and whenever you need to remember what it was like to believe in yourself, you dig it out and give it a spin. What’s she doing now? Do you really want the answer to that question? (Trust me, you don’t.) But locked away in your memory palace is the hottest piece of ass to ever walk the Earth. Anyway uh, pretty good album.

Very strong

One of the albums I heard on repeat driving in the car with my parents as a kid. So many bangers!

What a self-assured debut album

Biased as this album was part of my childhood but it's such a cracking sound that holds up today. Take Me Out is an all time great track and the fact the rest of the album can stand alongside it is a testament to the band. Incredible debut.

I love this album. Every song is solid. Great band that I always can come back to.

This record has a lo-fi garage rock feel with oodles of energy, but it’s much more smart and knowing. This band knows how to tell stories. Lyrically the album is located firmly in teen relational angst territory. Kapranos’ voice has character and the songs have creative and often arrestingly original structure. In places I’m put in mind of Sparks though this band strike me as ambitious enough to reach beyond the art rock confines which that comparison implies. The singles are clear hits.

Ooops all bangers. Two massive hits supported by an array of fantastic songs that could have easily been massive hits as well. 10/10

Man, I listened to this not expecting to like it at all. I mean, early 2000's indie can only go one of two ways, either its really good or it's runoff made to die over the PA systems at Hot Topics in middle America. This? This is different, it just hits all the right spots. Doesn't overstay its welcome, establishes a sound, but once it does, all the songs use the formula in different ways. That way it never gets stale. Yeah, I need this on CD.

It's one of my favourite albums from the naughties.

I like it, great stuff 👍

I think this was the first album I ever remember loving and that fact has not changed in 20 years.

Such a fun album. Franz Ferdinand have such a good sound, especially for when it came out.

Dance rock is fun.

Exuberant and infectious. Every track is single worthy.

Yes, this is absolutely great and unfortunately I am biased

Stellar

Every song on this album is good. A lot of interesting mid-song changes in tempo and/or style. “Take Me Out” is an absolute banger. Definite 5-star for me.

A banger

One of the top albums of my teens from the noughties indie scene. Absolutely banging

This album came out right as I was about to turn 20. I loved it then, and I think it holds up well. I’ve gone and listened to Gang of Four as numerous reviews suggested, and yeah there’s a clear through line to this album, but it’s a bit reductive to say FF didn’t put their own spin and polish on it. To my ear, there’s a lot more variety to the songs on this album than on GoF’s “Entertainment!” and the whole notion of a later album being useless because someone kind of did the same thing 25 years earlier is silly. By that logic, we’d all be wasting our time but to listen to only the oldest known recorded music because everything after is derivative.

Thank god, I've been waiting for another banger from this site. Franz Ferdinand is not a favorite band of mine and I've only ever listened to this album, but boy is it good. Obviously, Take Me Out is the hardest hitter and their biggest hit, but every other song is anywhere from just pretty good to REALLY good. It's a no skip album, I think. I will say, I only know like half the song names because I always listen to the whole album all at once without really looking at the titles. However, that does not detract from the listening experience of this album. It's a really cool vibe and it's extremely coherent and just so so good. Take Me Out is lowkey one of the best songs I've ever heard. The tempo change is really something. The riff is awesome. It's so good. Sooooooo good. This Fire is another favorite, it's really just fun and reminds me of Damaged Goods by Gang of Four (which actually this whole album feels similar to). And I like Cheating on You and Darts of Pleasure and Michael and literally all of them. Great album. Maybe like a 4.9 because it's not like I LOVE LOVE LOVE every song but I'll give it a 5 because it's pretty close to that.

Been a while since I've listened to this album all the way through. So good - many catchy songs.

Wow, yet another early 2000s indie/alt rock classic from my youth. The generator has been on a roll lately. I've now had the debut albums from The Strokes, Coldplay, The Vines, and Franz Ferdinand, all in the span of 11 days. As I listened to one great song after another on this album (many of which I was already familiar with), I wondered why no one really talks about Franz Ferdinand anymore.

This is one of my favorite albums from the 2000s it is such a good album and band! This is a great intro album as well! Unused to just cruise and listen to this album with my buddies a very good album with fond memories attached to it!

The first "new band" album i got into as a kid and I can't review it fairly. It was aimed at me. Rock that rocks when live but beats to get you moving at the indie disco. Bedwetter rock was taking over in the UK at the time and this album started a resurgence from the stench of Keane and Coldplay piss

Peak is back on the menu.

One of my favorite albums of my teen years. Still so great.

It’s one of the pinnacles of the garage rock sound of the Aughts and the reason that Rose Matafeo almost had a protection order taken out against her. I’d be very Aughty if I didn’t rate it 5 stars. Or perhaps I am very Aughty because I’ve rated it at 5 stars. Whatever.

I've just gotten through with a post-punk deep dive so perfect time for Franz Ferdinand. They are one of the only bands who list Josef K as an influence, one of my all-time favorites. I enjoyed it much more this time than when I first listened to it. I can't find a bad song on here so very tempted to give a perfect score. Rating: 4.9

Listening to this again for the first time in a decade, maybe more, I was delighted to find that it sounded as good as I remembered it sounding. Just a meticulously well constructed album. Really fucking fun.

There are so many albums on this list I give 5s to that I want to dissect in minute detail. And here's what I'll say about this Franz Ferdinand (2004): this is so much goddamn fun.

I love this shit, the saviours of rock and roll. Scottish indie, post punk revival, hooked that shit into my veins. TAKE ME OUT.

That was a goood early 2000’s album!

A 10/10 good time.

Brilliant album from start to finish

One of my favorite alternative bands in high school, this group always sounded unique. Their pop sound and liberal use of tempo and tonal changes has always led to fun music. Take Me Out, Dark of the Matinée, and Jacqueline were all songs I've heard over the years, but not much beyond that in depth. My favorite new one was 40', but really this whole album was fun.

ive already heard this one

I loved this at the time and it stands up very well indeed. The angular guitars and tight playing are very reminiscent of Talking Heads and Gang of Four but that's cool. Indie rock from this period can get a bad name and, to be fair, there was some crap produced in that era (I'm looking at you Razorlight). Franz Ferdinand were one of the good ones though and it was a joy to revisit this. Super fantastic, you could say Final note - after Belle and Sebastian yesterday, very happy to give 5* to two Glasgow bands on consecutive days, as a resident of this fine but rainy city

favourite album mid 2000

Rock!!! 9/10

Lo conozco, me encanta. Aguante Franz Ferdinand.

This album kinda slaps. Never really listened to the whole thing, but I should have. Will I listen to again: 100%

It's a flawless indie darlings album. These guys rode the wave of the naughties invasion kicked off by The Strokes, and they brought a bit of art student quirk to proceedings. Great opener, neatly establishes Alex's distinctive vocal stylings, followed by their spiky, off kilter guitars. Tell Her Tonight is like something off Talking Heads’ 77, or XTC’s Drums and Wires Take Me Out is the stand out. It hit me like a brick to each ear when I first heard it. It didn't sound like anything else, a rare achievement considering it was released in 2004. No track reminds me of the sticky indie sleaze clubs I used to go to more than Michael. Mucky, androgynous yet sexual, a call to youthful exploration. Angular sequences underpinned by a rhythm section tightly wound around the guitar riffs and vocal arrangements. Great pop songs by well preened boys in ties.

Iconic album. Standout Tracks: - Darts of Pleasure - Jacqueline - The Dark of the Matinee - Take Me Out (overplayed, but amazing track)

Glorious and fun. Takes me back to being 15 so this was a safe 5 stars.

Soundtrack of my youth! Takes me back to my clubbing era.

I can still remember sticking this CD on for the first time... oh, that was 21 years ago!! A well produced album with great energy and a well rounded, multi-dimensional sound stage that sounds as good in 2025 as it did in 2004. As ever, good Hi-Fi helps.

A noughties indie rock classic, banger after banger. Alex’s voice is underrated too.

Solid outing, good energy, great vibes

Early aughts indie pop rock that is as fun and fresh as the day it was released. A real joy.

I love this album is amazing in every way and so cool...
