Wicked album, really enjoyable they are a good band
Best Song: The Dark of the Matinee. I enjoyed the dynamic volume/tempo. Worst Song: Tell Her Tonight. The vocals sound raw in a bad way. Overall: Apart from the few (by now massively overplayed) hits, this feels pretty forgettable. It sounds a bit like a mix of LCD Soundsystem and the Arctic Monkeys, but is inferior to both. Not bad, but just the kind of nondescript music you hear during breaks at a sports arena.
Iconic indie album named after possibly the most important person in modern history. If archduke Franz Ferdinand was never assassinated we would be living in a completely different world.

It's a good indie rock album. Mad that it's nearly 20 years old and there really haven't been many good indie rock albums since. Not hugely surprised it's left the book as for all it's qualities, aside from Take Me Out it's not that outstanding/noteworthy in this context. Michael and Darts of Pleasure my favourites.

After I wrote my last exam in University and was officially finished school, I was driving to my hometown and Take Me Out came on the radio, a song I already loved, and I just started jamming out hard in my car. Apparently I was dancing enough for people to notice and some folks in a truck passing by started dancing too. That's my story about this album. Anyways, love Franz Ferdinand, there's something about their guitar riffs that I just love. They have some great hooks and this album is full of bangers. Take Me Out, Tell Her Tonite, Auf Achse, This Fire,

Heavily Gang of Four influenced album, which always sounds fine to me, but where GoF's albums are still timeless, FF did not really stood the test of time: the songs (even the singles) turned out to be quite a bit less strong than they were in my memory. Still a solid album, miles better than the other GoF derivatives from that time..
Still the same response as when it was first released. It sounded okay, with some nice guitar work, but ultimately it did not really feel that special to me.
I was genuinely surprised that this album had made the list. There's nothing wrong with it, but it just doesn't seem to have enough about it to make a list of albums you need to hear. It's not even the bands best album. It's fine. It's ok.

Exactly as I would expect a Franz Ferdinand album to sound. Feel like I recognised half the songs despite never having listened to it before. Definitely the sound of an era.
Better than average art-rock from the early 2000s. Heavily disco-influenced drumming makes this more dance-able than most. Arrangements are bit more inventive than most (Take Me Out is a particularly good example of this). But was a lot of the praise a result of the last of the huge major label promotion budgets? I don't hear this band talked about much any more. I hope they invested their money wisely, and are comfortably resting on their laurels.
Every song on this albums feels different.
This was never really a band that I got into when they were popular, and I think now that I understand why. I find them boring and every song sounds the same to me. Like, I'm 4 songs in and I just want to give up because its so dull Also they have a terrible name. It's like the Dead Kennedys, except it's not funny. Same 2/5

Fun music, first time I've heard this band, not sure, I'll need to listen again and to some of their other music. Maybe I'm just not a punk person.
take me out is a great song thats a banger. the rest all kinda sound the same to me and i was really bored.
A few fun songs make this enjoyable most of the way through.
I had my fingers crossed that I would have something that I knew today and I love this album so much so that’s good… Jacquline starts the album off with a the only acoustic bit in the album; then the Franz Ferdinand sound pops in this song is so infectious you would probably be singing along by the third listen. Great opener! I don’t hate tell her tonight but it’s always been my least favourite on the album and the only one I would call filler. Then is take me out the big single that everyone will know as you should know it starts with a much faster tempo for the first minute then forms into the stomper it is. It’s great but I’ve always preferred the intro. Now for the dark of the matinee, this is the album’s “ best” song ( not my favourite though) everything from the exploding guitars in the intro/instrumental to the long but memorable chorus and my favourite bit the verses especially the Terry Wogan one! Auf achse ( I honestly don’t know how to pronounce this or what it means in relation to the song) is for the most part a repetitive trance like looming entity of an epic synth-pop track, then is the Franz Ferdinand-y all guns blazing chorus and yeah that bridge is UNDERRATED . I loved this song from day one even if it’s not a fan favourite. Starting off side two is cheating on you, like tell her tonight this is still good but not as great ( still better than tell her tonight though) it’s a crunchy little guitar track and the albums heaviest song still an honest 4/5 track. When I was first getting into the album I would just flick through tracks, barely listen to them and for these next three saw a sample of the amazing music videos, this fire in terms of music videos has the best ( they’re all essentially commies). The song itself is good and I’ve seen it written off as filler which I don’t think it deserves It’s not my favourite but still has it’s moments. ( also the single version of this is shit). Then is darts of pleasure, probably the worst looking music video, is the debut single from this group, the song is probably one of the most distinctive the song is led much more by the pulsating drums the chorus is the best bit but the coda is so memorable. Now Michael is my favourite song on the album, it’s a fun little homosexual flick of a song with great guitars, one of the most oddly catchy choruses on the whole album and that little backwards message. I don’t know why I like it so much it’s just fun! Come on home is a deep cut that I loved so much at the start fine a lot of that love has passed no. But I still love it a moody little track with good lyrics, great guitar work and that little synth break is awesome. The album closes with 40’ a really fun send off track, it’s not as lyrically dense than the others ( they feel more used as a weapon to increase the greatness of the instrumentals) and anyone who doesn’t like the instrumental for this song is just a bit odd to be honest! Thank you for reading my little love letter for the band that essentially started the rudely called “ landfill indie”. I will ask this for everyone just try the other “ landfill indie” albums one day, form a proper opinion and don’t listen to the critics until you make your own judgment!
Play the chonky Talking Heads/Television chords to death. Catchy and accessible but can grate after about 6 songs
Good album that was able to compete with it's big hit.
Some good riffs but the melodies don't match up. Take Me Out is great - it's just a shame Led Zeppelin wrote it first (Trampled Underfoot)!

Yeah ok post-punk revival. I missed out on it at the time, but it's definitely in the spirit of post-punk.
Meh. At first listen these guys sound promising. But they just don't sound real. A little too contrived and calculated. They remind me of the Strokes in that regard. Kids trying to sound like someone from their big brother's record collection.

Great mix of Buddy Holly & The Crickets, The Dave Clark Five, the disco Era Brothers Gibb, B-52's and Midnight Oil. This is a band I know I could be a member of immediately. I'd be like that dude from The Mighty Mighty Bosstones who didn't play an instrument or sing, and was only there to dance.
This album continues to be infinitely replayable.
I always found this style, like the Strokes, very irritating. Something about the guitar riffs and the vocals are not pleasant.
Genre: Post-Punk Revival 4/5 Another mid-aught’s British rock album that I listened till I knew every cymbal crash, and for what I believe is good reason. This is a 4 not *purely* out of nostalgia, but because I truly feel there’s an undeniable joy within this project. Franz Ferdinand is a band, and an album, that has since faded with the times, leaving little behind as a collective beyond their earth-scorching single, Take Me Out. The reality is that these guys have a fairly respectable body of work, as far as decent rock albums go, but the unfortunate reality is that they never topped their debut. A few songs later in their career are great (I’m QUITE fond of Do You Want To from the album after this one), but they did truly bust their nut here. Starting with Take Me Out, which is probably the best rock single of 2000s (???, I can’t think of a better one), this was a tune that was both familiar, yet fresh to so many listeners. Its brilliant riff, and its distinct disco feel with punk-style vocals on top, made it immediately one of the catchiest songs of the decade. BUT, what lies within is a more-than-decent collection of similar style jams. Tight disco riffs mingle with heavy drum and bass, the vocals stay relentless, loud, and energetic, and it makes for a damn good dance party. Dark of the Matinee and 40’ are my favorites outside of Take Me Out, but cuts like Jacqueline and Michael, showcase all sides of Franz Ferdinand, showing how their particular brand of rock sounds good any way you slice it. Really killer album that, like I said, I think may have died with the times, but this is one that I’ll play forever.
Its unapologetically getting a biased 4. I have weird (maybe Freudian) memories of this album so was impossible to listen to objectively....

I don't know what happened to Franz Ferdinand after this album, it's like they became a totally different, and much less interesting, band. There are some great catchy songs on this album, many of which used to set the dancefloor alight in rock clubs. They had their own unique sound, tons of enthusiasm, and this album is the result of that positivity. But then, after this... it's a shame really.
When the tempo picks up half a min into the album it gets the toes tapping. It's decent and the single is good but there is not enough excitement to keep my interest.
Such catchy guitar licks – the guitar sound reminds me of Gang of 4. One can rant (as I often do) about “what’s the purpose of releasing a post punk/rock LP like this in 2004, so late in the game, blah-blah-blah” but if the song-writing is good, nothing else really matters. “Take Me Out” is epic and since I don’t listen to Indie 88, I still have a few hundred listens left until I’m sick of it. There’re a handful of catchy tracks, though some sound like revisions of the hit. Not a good sign for the band’s longevity. “Darts of Pleasure” I like.
This was quite alright, but as many others have mentioned, Take me out is a good single, but apart from that much of the album sounds very samey. I won't be inspired to seek this out anytime soon.

Typical early 2000's indie, which I am a fan of. Though here it sounds like they try to be a bit more unique, like on "Michael", and some songs work better than other. Though "Take Me Out" still my favourite track.

It is weird to have a “takes me back” experience from and album that still feels new to me. What happened to the last 18 years?! Anyway… this takes me back. When I first heard this in 2004 it sounded really different, really new, really interesting, and really great! This album is adventurous and daring while being really great to listen to and a hell of a lot of fun to dance to. It’s good to dance like a beautiful dance-whore again! “Take Me Out” is still as exciting as ever. This song still gives me goosebumps. The tempo change is incredible - that tempo slowdown is one of the great moments in modern music. Really amazing song crafting. But there are so many great moments in the rest of the album. Franz Ferdinand has a ton of tricks up their sleeve and each time I listen the draw me in more. The album is consistently great. It’s filled with clever rhymes, observations and lyrics. The music is varied, clever and interesting while still managing to be catchy. Another case where I started listing my favorite songs and it was the track listing. The whole thing overflows incredible. I’m so glad to have this back on centerstage of my stereo. Definitely one of my favorite albums of its decade and one of my favorite albums ever!

Jak jedna jaskółka wiosny nie czyni tak Take Me Out nie robi z Franz Ferdinand majstersztyku. Album brzmi przyjemnie, ale jednorodnie. Poszczególne kawałki zlewają się ze sobą w całość która średnio rozbrzmiewa... średnio, właściwie. Na tle całości wyróżniają się najpierw Jacqueline solidnym intro a potem Take Me Out, całą swoją istotą - jeden z lepszych bangerów dekady. Dalej niestety wkraczamy w obszar niewielkich różnic i zamazanych granic - miłe zaskoczenie z Auf Achse, niemiłe z Darts of Pleasure, nic specjalngo. Wokal o ile przyjemny jest ograniczany przez niezainspirowane teksty. O ile nie miałbym obiekcji do słyszenia Franz Ferdinand w tle co jakiś czas, na liście 1001 najlepszych sam bym go nie umieścił. 3/5, bliżej 4 niż 2 głównie z uwagi na trzy kawałki wyróżniające się pozytywnie w Jackqueline, Auf Achse i oczywiście Take Me Out.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's nothing to write home about - after all this album gave us one of the greatest bangers of the decade. However, apart from "Take me out" and a few honorable mentions the rest of the set seems unremarkable and boring. Worth knowing, but not sure whether I would put it on the 1001 greatest list myself. PS. If half-stars were accepted, this album would receive 3,5 stars.
Esencja garażowego rocka - album wychodzący w czasach popularyzacji indie rocka spokojnie przebił się do kanonu, a inni artyści czerpią z niego inspirację. Chociaż dość krótki, zachowuje spójność i bardzo dobrze się go słucha. Pokazuje też, że do stworzenia chwytliwego kawałka nie potrzeba wiele więcej, niż gitary, klawisze i perkusja. Do tego wokal w punkt i mamy prosty przepis na sukces. The Dark Of The Matinee zaskakująco wpadło mi w ucho.

Plusik bo wcześniej poza "Take me out" nie znałem nic, a kilka fajnych piosenek jak "Auf Achse" się znalazło. Na minus, że trochę mało różnorodności, czasem mi się wydawało, że wstępu są zbyt podobne w niektórych piosenkach. Plusik, że w końcu coś co można na spokojnie przesłuchać w mniej niż godzinkę XD
Mało do dodania w stosunku do poprzedników. Take me Out super, Jacqueline też bardzo fajne, nie ma tu złych kawałków, ale nie zapada w pamięć. Pewnie inaczej bym to odebrał słysząc to przy stanie muzyki na rok 2004, a nie w 2022. Dużym plusem jest to, że trwa 40 minut, przez to piosenki się nie dłużą. Niemniej jednak zasadniczo brzmią podobnie i są mało charakterystyczne, mimo przyjemnego wokalu i wesołego brzmienia. Znowu szkoda braku połówek - 3.5 jest tu idealną wg mnie oceną.

When this album came out, I sort of lumped Franz Ferdinand in with The Strokes and The Killers. I really liked both of those artists, but I didn't take much notice of Franz Ferdinand. Listening to this afresh though, it's a really impressive debut. They seem incredibly confident and sure of themselves for a new band, and the songs are really good and well produced. 4 stars.

So Franz Ferdinand saved music. You see, in the early 2000s music just... Kinda stopped. Britpop had given way to awful shite like Coldplay. House music had grown tired, UK Garage had shot its bolt, and the industrial/alternative scene had collapsed into Nickelback, with Evanescence lurking in the wings. The world had "more important" things to worry about. The history that we believed had ended in 1989 became quite historic and very, very present, and music was generally, and genuinely, awful. Franz Ferdinand changed that. Take Me Out is genuinely a masterpiece. The changing tempo. The catchy hook. The evocative lyrics, dripping with self awareness and beauty of language. Most of all, it is fun. Almost the entire album of it is fun, managing to convey its messages in a way that's actually enjoyable, danceable and not filled with the self-indulgent wankery of their contemporaries. I'd like to say that Franz Ferdinand opened the door to the Scisssor Sisters - the other band of the mid-2000s to let "fun" play a part in music again, but I think that Scissor Sisters had found another way in and were able to steal the silverware on their own. The two of them though, genuinely represents a clear signal that music wasn't dead, just very badly burnt. Good on 'em.

Landmark album of the post-punk revival in the 2000s. Alongside the likes of Interpol, Bloc Party, and the National, Franz Ferdinand laid down danceable drum beats with staccato guitar riffs to make for an energetic sound that drew heavily from the rise of indie rock at the time. The end product is okay. Take Me Out is a clear winner and The Dark of the Matinée is pretty good, but the rest isn't even reaching the same levels of quality. Coming back to this one after a while, I think it's better than what I remember but still not great by any means.

A rosey glow of nostalgia from this one. This was everywhere when it came out, and I liked it mainly because I loved the bands they were copying, such as Josef K. Now much further removed, there’s another sense of nostalgia for the time I first heard this. This time I enjoyed the energy of this from the start. And always loved the "It's always better on holiday, so much better on holiday.That's why we only work when we need the money” line as it reminds me of the office jobs I had around that time. But the energy did dissipate towards the end, or rather my enthusiasm for the songs. Some great tunes, and they never did anything as good. But, like the album itself, the idea seemed to run out of road fairly quickly.
I'd forgotten how big FF were back in 2004. Take Me Out was bloody everywhere. This is probably why I made an effort to avoid the album at the time. With retrospect it's not bad, but certainly not worthy of the hype. So much of the content was lifted from elsewhere. The bass is strong and benefits from some decent production. The whole indie / dance crossover thing is about 15 years too late. I didn't find much else to hold my attention other than Take Me Out, which is something of a banger.
Hot and sleek like a state-of-the-art sports car, but a little samey in the end. "Take Me Out" is one of the great rocks songs of the last 20 years. Lack of perfect hooks across the rest of the record, however.
I like this album...I like it a lot. To me this is to be lumped in with Arctic Monkees, The Good the Bad and the Queen, the Libertines / Babyshambles and maybe even British Sea Power and The Legends. For me this is the best of the bunch (except for BSP, The Decline of British Sea Power is an incredible album). More consistent in its accessibility than the more lauded Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand has very few missteps and when it hits it's target its a bullseye. A very enjoyable listen. 4 🌟

2/9/2022 Today's Album: "Franz Ferdinand" by Franz Ferdinand - I reviewed this album right after the last on the flight home from Colorado and went song by song, but the text didn't save so I'll give a shorter and more concise review Edit: This did not end up being concise. This album is fantastic. Going into it, I had heard the title track, Take Me Out, which is a clear shining moment on this album with one of the best executed beat switch ups and lush background instrumentation and dueling guitars. However, that isn't to say there aren't other highlights on this LP. The opener, Jacqueline begins with a softly spoken vocal before the bassline welcomes in the drums and lead guitar. Like a lot of songs on this record, it is an incredibly danceable track with a great chorus that has a critical message of the daily grind of capitalism. The track The Dark of The Matinée is a mixture of 2000s alt rock and 50s show tune melodies, thus the name of the track. The chorus absolutely slaps and the track in general just keeps a really fun and danceable energy throughout. The slowed refrain that speeds back up into the chorus is incredibly well executed and every instrument is able to shine through the mix. The track This Fire is a fairly popular track that has strange vocal harmonies similar to Talking Heads but the quick and precise drum beat and staccato guitar strumming keeps it very energetic and the finish is very noisy and climactic. The track Come On Home is a fantastic track that might have become my favorite of the record. The subtle, yet dramatic chorus and incredible guitar and synth work gives this song an amazing energy. I should mention that this album has a very uniform sound and despite for the most part being quite innovative with it, the track Cheating On You just didn't do many exciting things with the style. However there are plenty of moments where there is tons of innovation. The track Auf Achse has these ringing synths to back the usual quick drum beat, guitar and bass and it works very well. I also like the bit of German at the end of it to give the title some context and I imagine have a potent message if I went looking for it. The album closes off well with the track 40', which just cements the entire vibe of the track into one song, with it feeling like a culmination of what came before it. It's a much more subtle and chilled out track and it gives it a somber finale feeling. The guitar riff that comes in around 2 minutes is great and the drums/cymbals are getting the absolute shit beat out of them. There's also a really cool synth line that comes in before it cuts back down to the more somber vibe. It leaves off the album in a fantastic way and I just cannot emphasize that enough. This album blew me away with it's creativity, yet consistency. Each Instrument always comes through the mix well and the entire album has themes of break up, anger towards exes (or the other gender in general), and positivity towards being single after a shitty relationship. I love this album and although some songs lack in innovation, it's really hard to complain when the album flows so excellently and keeps my interest so well throughout. If you like alt rock or rock in general, this is an essential listen. Fantastic indie rock album

A shining light in the indie landfill era. I will never get over the fact that what sounds like the greatest song Josef K never wrote ends after a minute of Take Me Out, and becomes another fine but not quite so brilliant song. But sharp suits, tight guitar lines. Good work.
Double up
I was worried when I got this album generated for me. I knew the song 'Take Me Out', and it's fantastic, but I was worried that, like with most albums that have a super popular hit, the rest of the songs were going to not stand out in comparison. Nothing ever reaches the high of 'Take Me Out', but there are still a number of fantastic songs that make this album a complete experience, and not something you listen to just to hear the one hit.
Yeah, great no nonsense indie rock for partying, yet with interesting lyrics. Like it!

Listened Before? N This one shaped up okay. I was NOT a fan of the first two tracks, but once Take Me Out kicked in, it got a lot better. I feel like the band put their filler tracks at the beginning. Pros: Great retro sound that was popular in the early 2000's and kinda sparked the modern "indie" sound. Good energy. Take Me Out and This Fire brought this one from a 1 * to a 3 * on their own. Cons: As mentioned - the first two tracks had me wondering if I was going to make it through. They're repetitive and boring. Take Me Out stands FAR above the rest of the album. I feel like this band didn't meet their potential. Added to Library? Remember Take Me Out being quoted as the "best music for banging" in university due to it multiple rhythm and time changes. Definitely do as much as they can with the pop-punk-dance vibe without going over produced or electronic. Had it's time and place in the mid-2000s but I guess they sort of ran out of steam.

Nice to hear this again, I used to own this on CD. Some great singalong choruses on here but the best for me is THAT guitars & drums breakdown on Take Me Out. A bit like Pulp & the Arctic Monkeys. It’s all a bit samey though and Alex Kapranos’ voice isn’t very interesting.
Rejection. Revenge. Repeat, retarded. Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria was the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary. His assassination in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 is considered the most immediate cause of the first World War. ‘His life, or at least the ending of it,’ recalls bassist Bob Hardy, ‘was the catalyst for the complete transformation of the world and that is what we want our music to be. But I don’t want to over-intellectualize the name thing. Basically a name should just sound good… like music.’ Drummer Paul Thompson followed up, saying, ‘I like the idea that, if we become popular, maybe the words Franz Ferdinand will make people think of the band instead of the historical figure.’ This never really worked out very well for my girlfriend in college who formed a country/funk fusion group, performed one live gig, and then promptly broke up. The Mary Queen of Scots were too far ahead of their time. This is a dumb name for a dumb band with a dumb sound. Nothing noteworthy here, save the absence of any instrumental breaks whatsoever. I didn’t hear one guitar solo, bass run, drum fill, piccolo trill, triangle shred… nothing. And lyrically? Well, here’s one really dumb example from the song, ‘Auf Achse’: ‘Now I’m nailed above you gushing from my side. It’s with your sins that you’ve killed me, thinking of your sins I die. Thinking how you’ve let them touch you, how you’d never realize than I’m ripped and hang forsaken knowing never will I rise again.’ A comparison upgrade, at least, from the Austrian Archduke. But a dumb one. Far as I can tell, this is an entire LP replete with unrequited love songs, each one dumber than the next (alleviating Hardy’s concern about any over-intellectualization.) But don’t feel too sorry for these boys. Their lyrics betray their own moral culpability in repeating the same dumb choices. Furthermore, it speaks volumes about the lyricist’s true feelings when he concludes a plea for her to ‘Come On Home’ with the lyric ‘But don’t forget to leave.’ That idea’s just plain… what’s the adjective I’m looking for?

An sich solides Indie Rock Album, ist auch allen bekannt und hat jeder mal gehört. Hab ein paar Highlights hier, zb. Cheating on you, the dark of the matinee oder auch this fire. Insgesamt aber wirklich nichts allzu Besonderes letztendlich. Da hör ich lieber Arctic Monkeys am Ende des Tages.

Dieser Post-Post-Punk Sound ist mittlerweile SOOO egal, also ich mag die upbeats sehr gerne und verbinde da bissl was nostalgisches mit aber dieses punkige irgendwie versuchen glamuröser zu machen hat nicht wirklich gut geklappt. In einer Indie Disco betrunken um 3 würde ich take me out aber trotzdem gröhlen!

I love this album. Some great tracks
The singles Take Me Out and The Dark of the Matinee were staples in pubs and clubs when i was in university back in the early to mid 2000's (showing my age a bit here) so listening to this album is a bit of a nostalgia trip. Generally speaking the music is pleasant high octane guitar pop/rock. Overall it's lively and enjoyable enough but it's nothing special or particularly distinctive either.

Likes this more than I remembered. Take me home is an absolute stinker of a tune. The rest is good enjoyable and I think I'd like them live.

I liked this well enough at the time, and it seems like they did a good job of raising the profile of lurchy angular post-punk as a whole, so hurrah! Still enjoyable to revisit! Fave track - has to be "Take Me Out" - that's an absolute tune. "Michael" and "This Fire" get honourable mentions...

File under “whatever happened to” but If I compare this to yesterdays (“Nowhwere” by Ride), this is sonically pleasing, interesting from song to song and full of hooks. Fave tracks: “Michael” “This Fire” “Take Me Out”

Can only think of Guitar Hero for ps2 when I hear this band.
I purchased this at some point, for the U.S.-recognizable hit, and ended up liking the whole thing better than I expected. Finely executed, unique sound.
Down with it! Was only familiar with 'Take Me Out' which I enjoyed well enough when it first came out. I like how a lot of the songs changed up the tempos throughout. And some good bass lines. Possibly a little redundant on the sound but can't fault someone for sounding like themselves. While only a 3 star rating, adding to my library is a better indication than my rating.
better than i was expecting. nothing from this era has stood up that well because there was so much paint by numbers in the indie world, however theres some actual content on here. in fact i'll go medium on it, if any of these tracks came on in a random shuffle i wouldn't skip it. i wouldn't have been able to hear it in 2004 but you can very much hear the influences, in the same way you can with oasis.
A fizzing firework that has been let off in the face of a child, scarring them for life. They now live a sheltered, quiet life, afraid of making new friends. They will never find love.
If I transport myself back to 2004, then it's probably edging a 4, but probably more a 3 now. I'll be kind to it for the memories.
@SHACK - please, please take me out and show me your dart of pleasure. Please. This was a gateway album to a lot of post-punk classics for me, however having now absorbed those post-punk classics, this really does sound like a poor imitation.

Reasonably solid. Take Me Out is definitely a stand-out, but the other songs are interesting in that it sounds like a modern take on classic Kinks. Not enough catchy to rate above average.

This is an entirely new one for me, I remember they had some radio hits but not much else… interested to hear this in its entirety. Will update once I’ve listened. Ok, so this had a few fun moments but overall, I was just hoping the end would hurry up and get there so I could leave my listening space for a snack. I don't know if it is bad but it definitely wasn't for me. I'm actually going to keep it on my saved albums list and give it another listen at another time - perhaps I was just in a pissy mood.
Franz Ferdinand is the first album on this list that I'd already played in its entirety, and what a banger of an album it is. I adore Take Me Out and played it again several times. It's not quite a 5/5 as there is a bit of filler - but a solid 4/5, and I will listen to it again.

One of the best debut albums of all time
From when I first heard, Take Me Out in 2004, I became a fan. They lit up the dance floor of ever indie club across the world. Them touring this album in Australia was a special time as it coincided with the opening of Spectrum, a venue I would go on to do the art for over the next 6 years. I still love the rest of their work but none could ever match this debut
Look, Take Me Out was an all time indie disco classic, and there's some other good stuff in there. The art school thing meant that their videos were quite interesting too. But Alex Kapranos was rude about my boys The Chisel for no good reason, so in the bin with Razorlight they must go. Objectively, the only difference between Franz Ferdinand and noughties blowhards The Libertines is that FF rip off the same bands while affecting ironic detachment. Either way, it's a band that think they're dead clever for shoplifting from Wire, Gang Of Four and Magazine, forgetting that a photocopy of a photocopy of a photocopy eventually ends up a pale reflection of the original beautiful picture. There's some fun manifestoey ideas behind their style and look, and as I said, Take Me Out is great, Dark of the Matinee is fine enough and mentions Terry Wogan
Good stuff, interesting, spunky and very youthful and alive. I always loved Take Me Out, the lyrics are so good, the sound, the voice and sharpness of the overall sound. Nice one! And the dark of the matinee! What a song.. Sublime lyrics.

Wow. I remember hearing/watching Take Me Out on MTV. Has it really been 17 years? At the time I was 14 and didn't really understand Franz Ferdinand or their music and wasn't a big fan. Now I think I understand and like them a lot better. Hard to believe this is a debut album, as sophisticated as it is. I was pretty torn between rounding this up or down from a 4.5, but in the end I'm rounding it down because there are a couple of songs on here that really aren't very good. But there are no really bad ones and I really enjoyed The Dark Of The Matinée and Darts Of Pleasure very much.
It makes a statement. Well produced, good songwriting. Will it still be on the list in 10 years time?

A near-perfect compendium of carefully crafted punchy post-punk tunes, bristling with brio and bravado. There's not a second wasted in the listening experience for this album - every single track chugs its way into your mind and stays there for good. And you knew that they'd be just as good at a gig as they sounded here. An outstanding album, and one for the ages.

Its a very enjoyable album and one of the best from that ‘new indie’ era. The singles stand out a mile (Take Me Out, Matinee, Michael) and marking it down one star because of the knowledge they went on to far better.
This is lovely, just lovely! Happy to listen to it again.

I had this one on CD back in the day, they were quite hot then and I remember they didn't shy to that rock& roll stardom position (at least Kapranos), I remember the Mercury price and how they were suposed to save rock & roll (same as the Strokes or Interpol a couple of years before). they had a couple of other fairly good records and then dissapeared (I think although I saw them live just in 2019). I had not listen to this one in ages, it is quite good an a good print of its time, I think I should buy its vinyl

First day of 1001albums, so it started off great. Tons of bangers on here, definitely enjoyed the whole thing.
I love that this band doesn't sound the same in every song.....but they always sound like themselves.
A little repetitive but good and largely lived up to the popular single !! Like if the strokes were more dancey. 8/10

Album je super, čista četvorka, iznaneđen sam zapravo koliko ovaj album može parirati Interpolov - Turn on the Bright Lights i od Arctic Monkeysa - Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

Take me out!! One of those albums that had a one hit wonder and I never bothered listening to the rest. Now is my chance and this is an enjoyable album! Still a sort of brittish rock but there were some unique tunes within. They were definitely channeling their predecessors of rock. The album cover is very informative because that is the name of the album and also of the band.
What kinda guy listens to the Franz Ferdinand album instead of just the song? All of us now. Of course, "Take Me Out" is a timeless jam for me, I love it so dearly. The rest of this is pretty good, a few songs that I enjoyed but most of it pales in comparison to the standout. A good album to be sure, but not sure if it's worth inclusion on a list like this. Favorite tracks: Take Me Out, Jacqueline, 40', Auf Achse. Album art: Very simple, but strong. Really like the bold lettering and font. As far as simplicity goes, this one gets it right. 3.5/5

This early 00s alternative album has one of the best songs from the 00s with take me out. The rest of the album holds up well. Part of it feels like the strokes. Others like arctic monkeys but not quite as refined. Overall it’s solid. 7.6/10

I've seen Franz Ferdinand in concert, but as one of the opening acts for The Cure. "Take Me Out" is the one song I can realiably attribute to the band. The album was good, but I still don't feel much of a draw to listen to the musc again. "The Dark of the Matinée", "This Fire", and "Come on Home" are potential tracks worth a second listen.

Not bad. Lots of interesting syncopation. The more I listen to it, the more I can hear the Smiths influence and British New Wave as a whole. It's not a straight rock album as it contains, punk, funk, and art music influences. The song structure here is varied with lots of good breaks. The rhythm section drives the whole band with moments of great syncopation and wonderful high hat work layered over a thumping bass.

“Take Me Out” is still a banger! Love their dancey post-punk with a kiss of late stage Beatles sound. This whole thing takes me back to high school.
I distinctly remember listening to this record in my friend's car around the turn of the century. Take Me Out was the sound track to any number of fuzzy nights of imbibing and 20-somethings friendships. 20 years later...It's a fun, dancey, poppy rock record. None of the songs really live up to the funtime swagger of Take Me Out, but on their own every song on the record is decent. Not likely something I'll revisit a lot, but it was a pleasant listen for nostalgia's sake if nothing else. 3*
Obviously have heard "Take Me Out" but never the whole album, looking forward to it! Update After Listening: solid album but beyond the hit single none of the songs really stood out to me. Middle of the road, a little bland. A lot of the songs don't really go anywhere. Feel like I've heard better versions of what they were going for from Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, Fratelis, etc. But not a bad record.

Despite its slight unevenness, Franz Ferdinand ends up being rewarding in different ways than the band's previous work was, and it's apparent that they're one of the more exciting groups to come out of the garage rock/post-punk revival.

Definitely enjoyable songs, but they all do tend to sound similar. The vocalist is hard to understand at times, but certainly distinctive. It's a good album, but I think the average listener would have to hear it about 10 times for the songs to stick. The best songs from the album are definitely Take me out and Michael. Whenever I hear the influence of the Scottish indie band Orange Juice in anything else, I'm immediately onboard. What's wild is that when I was a tween, I had never heard of Orange Juice, but I sure loved what Franz Ferdinand was delivering. It was that same indie sound, but adapted for the stadium rock tours that defined the late 90s/early 2000s alt rock scene. Franz Ferdinand succeeds here with their duelling guitars, tight production and witty turn of phrase. Fav tracks: 40", Michael, Take Me Out and Jacqueline
This one's a bit of a nostalgic listen for me. Ultimately, I think I prefer their next two records over this one, but the energy here is undeniable. From the spiky riffs and vocal flourishes to the clever, sardonic lyrics, Franz Ferdinand cut a striking figure. Drawing on Orange Juice and other influential UK bands, they also produced something that felt really of its time and like a shot of espresso today. Favourite tracks: Take Me Out, Jacqueline, Michael, Darts of Pleasure
