Reviews (page 14 of 14)

war ok bissi so falco vibezz

I remembered this as being a better Killers, which it is, but that doesn't make it anything better than mediocre.

Never been a fan of their music so was expecting to not enjoy this but it was a decent album.

Reminds me why Take Me Out was such a jam, and why we never heard anything else from this album

Was really wanting more from this. It wasn’t horrible but didn’t pull me in like Take Me Out did.

This is not really my genre, the music all sounded kind of samey to me. Not bad, just fine, just not my thing. I listened to it a couple of days ago and already forgot the entire thing.

I was honestly somewhat surprised to see that I didn’t totally hate this after years of aversion towards “Take Me Out”. I didn’t really love it either, the mix between Britpop and then-current NYC garage rock just isn’t my thing, although a good riff or hook did show up enough to catch my attention. Just a D for me

Classic Album by Franz Ferdinand, it's okay to listen to, but most tracks tend to become annoying to me.

very of its time, doesn't honestly sound great to me now. boring, humour is rather grating. 2/5

Wasn't bothered apart from the few songs I already knew

Take Me Out is great and a few other tracks has a little something going for them but this is mostly tame post-punk that was poised to become a footnote in dad rock history.

Other than Take me out i didnt really like this album

album was decent, but not amazing nice background music. decent vocals. lyrics ok. 2 or 3 stars.

These guys sound similar to other garage rock revival acts that were popping up in the 2000s. Think: The Strokes, White Stripes, etc.. Only this album was a bit worse. Lots of the songs sounded the same to me. That was one of the reasons I never really got into the garage rock revival thing…

A couple of okay songs. Nothing that’s really exciting.

Of all the indie stuff coming out around this time, I found Franz Ferdinand to be the most oatmealy. Bloc Party, Kaiser chiefs, and The Killers for example, were all making more exciting and interesting indie at the time.

Ties on the head. A bit noisy

Just no.

From a deathly dull period in music when tired old men re-discovered Gang of Four, Wire and other post-punk luminaries, put on tight trousers and had wild success for no apparent reason. As you can probably tell, I do not like this and am perplexed by its popularity. Kapranos reminds me of a low-resolution Jarvis facsimile, a sinister middle-ager fronting a band 10 years older than their peers, who never gave up and got a real job. Not worth a 1* as it's all pretty harmless, acceptably short, but also quite rubbish.

There's nothing wrong with this album but it just isn't particularly good. Take Me Out and Come On Home were the only stand out songs. Really wanted to enjoy this more.

I used to like it, but it hasn’t aged well

Boring dance punk and annoying to boot

I know this is a catchy record for the most part but Franz Ferdinand's music just never really did anything for me. It all has a very predictable feel to me and I never really dug this genre of super angular, exacting, mathy guitar playing and drums. I don't know a better way to describe it but it all just feels very shallow to me. This came out when I was in high school and should have fit into the indie catalog I was into at the time but it just didn't and still doesn't do much for me. I was a big fan of the Strokes and am still blown away by their first album, which I feel like people group this in with but this album is just lacking something for me. Standout Tracks: Jacqueline, Take Me Out

too rowdy for me

great voice

O je. Ich fand es damals schon scheiße. Eine Aneinanderreihung tausendmal gehörter Rockklischees. Hat ein paar Momente. Daher etwas mehr als ein Stern.

No caso, o hit "Take Me Out" claramente consegue sintetizar o som da banda, indie festivo, quase um punk para dançar. Quase 40 minutos não se sustenta para garantir uma experiência maioral.

i don't have anything good or bad to say about this album. it sure is some songs that some guys made. Take Me Out is good of course, and the rest of it is there too. rating low because it's remarkable that even one person thought this was an album that you have to listen to before you die. it has the same ambience as being dead.

So back in like 2008-20010 I had a lot of crushes on indie girls with bangs who worshiped Steve Jobs. This is basically the soundtrack to that period of my life and I don't love it.

Few hits but a lot of the same lack of distinct sounding songs

This album has a similar tone throughout its runtime and aside from the notable "Take Me Out" it doesn't offer much staying power. While that may sound harsh, that shouldn't take away from the jangle rock and mainstream audience this was able to find.

the amount of punk within franz ferdinand's self-titled album took me by surprise! their punk is catchy, too--you just need to listen to "take me out" once to agree. musically, the drums absolutely stood out the most throughout the album. the lyrics were witty, creative, and created some good imagery. some of the album seemed to meld together and could be lackluster, which was surprising considering how much of a banger "take me out" is. 2.5

A very early 2000s alt. I wouldn’t yell at you if you put it on but I’d hope you’d change it eventually. 2.5

kinda bad

Take Me Out is just a hugely popular song, synonymous with the year I graduated high school, however, this band is in the wave of English bands all trying to be The Strokes…and I just don’t get it. Some decent songs, probably wouldn’t listen to it in my free time.

Take Me Out is great, but the rest seems to just be 10 more songs in the Style of Take Me Out but nowhere near as good. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Take Me Out Date listened: 07/12/22

Take Me Out is super catchy. The rest is...meh. I remember picking this album up back around the time it dropped based solely on Take Me Out and an absurdly low price. Needless to say it mostly collected dust on the shelf. Relistening serves a reminder why. 1 song wonder.

Not my cup of tea

Unremarkable.

Nostalgic but probably only a few songs that I actually semi-like

I mean the production is solid and take me out is on guitar hero but - big meh.

Honestly, surprisingly bland. I did enjoy it in the moment, but it faded from my mind shortly thereafter.

Take Me Out is great. Scottish Mercury Award winners. But doesn't this sound.... Tired? 4/5 when I originally heard it. 2/5 now.

Not crazy about this album. Songs all sound fairly similar. Seems like this style was a passing fad.

2.5. Good

Não gosto deste estilo de guitarra

Wasn’t the biggest fan of this album. A lot of the songs are very skipable and just didn’t really feel the style of it.

Listens: 2 Enjoyed: meh 2 stars feels harsh but 3 was way too high. Couldnt round it up to 3 considering some of the album's I've rated 3 so far. It wasn't even a particularly bad album it just wasn't very good either

A band that demands to be heard, but ultimately has nothing to say.

Leuk maar must listen? Nee

irriterende at lytte til i længere perioder

Modern rocknroll drumer rocks the most

Próximo septiembre, concierto de Franz, ojalá me invite Pris, me gusta el álbum pero no es lo lejor

Not really for me, too indie. Musically really tight just not for me.

well yes, i guess live it can be some fun.

This was never really a band that I got into when they were popular, and I think now that I understand why. I find them boring and every song sounds the same to me. Like, I'm 4 songs in and I just want to give up because its so dull Also they have a terrible name. It's like the Dead Kennedys, except it's not funny. Same 2/5

take me out is a great song thats a banger. the rest all kinda sound the same to me and i was really bored.

I always found this style, like the Strokes, very irritating. Something about the guitar riffs and the vocals are not pleasant.

Alveg hressandi, en ekkert surprise. Take me out alveg augljóslega singullinn sem heldur henni uppi.

This was quite alright, but as many others have mentioned, Take me out is a good single, but apart from that much of the album sounds very samey. I won't be inspired to seek this out anytime soon.

Nice melodies but irritating lyrics maybe ill like it more after a second listen

Owned this, kinda liked it when it came out, but really not that good in retrospect. Pretentious

Ca fait un peu bouillie

I'd forgotten how big FF were back in 2004. Take Me Out was bloody everywhere. This is probably why I made an effort to avoid the album at the time. With retrospect it's not bad, but certainly not worthy of the hype. So much of the content was lifted from elsewhere. The bass is strong and benefits from some decent production. The whole indie / dance crossover thing is about 15 years too late. I didn't find much else to hold my attention other than Take Me Out, which is something of a banger.

I tried, I really did, but I cannot like this album no matter what I do

take me out absoluter banger den rest kann man in die tonne treten

Luke-warm electronica album

Can only think of Guitar Hero for ps2 when I hear this band.

A pity... The year end album was not to my tastes. Glad that's over much like 2021

very generic 2000s rock imo that I couldn't distinguish. 04 chel nostalgia

repetitive and a little rocky for me. the recognizable tracks are bangers but for the most part it all sounds the same. take me out obviously goes.

Sarà il genere ma faccio veramente fatica a finirli questi album. Anche questo non mi ha lasciato niente

This is an entirely new one for me, I remember they had some radio hits but not much else… interested to hear this in its entirety. Will update once I’ve listened. Ok, so this had a few fun moments but overall, I was just hoping the end would hurry up and get there so I could leave my listening space for a snack. I don't know if it is bad but it definitely wasn't for me. I'm actually going to keep it on my saved albums list and give it another listen at another time - perhaps I was just in a pissy mood.

Didn't like it then, dont like it now.

Just sounds like every other band from that era.

First Listen. Never heard his music before. Seems good. Need to hear more. 2/5

Didn’t get the hype at the time, and still don’t. Painful

Pretty much different variations of the same song over and over again. Mixing is very flat. Got bored.

POV, it’s 2004 and the guy who sold you bad blow puts this album on during the transaction thinking “this album is it”

Was ok

The album was alright, no song really appealed to me enough to want to add any to my library. I could see the appeal to other people though! I definitely have heard worse albums during this challenge. 2/5 stars.

Couldn’t stand it at the time of its release…can’t stand it now…

Obviously have heard "Take Me Out" but never the whole album, looking forward to it! Update After Listening: solid album but beyond the hit single none of the songs really stood out to me. Middle of the road, a little bland. A lot of the songs don't really go anywhere. Feel like I've heard better versions of what they were going for from Interpol, Arctic Monkeys, Fratelis, etc. But not a bad record.

Aside from the hit it’s a forgettable rock album

Really wanted to love this but it left me indifferent instead. Yes, It’s a smart and fun record which is very much the point, but there’s nothing really essential or groundbreaking here other than ‘Take Me Out’. YMMV but it's a no for me.

strokes but not as good

Actually not as interesting as I thought it would be. Average.

Oh, so _that’s_ Franz F.

Apart from a couple of standout tracks, it didn't grab my attention.

It was fine, just not really my thing.

Songs start to blend together after a while, very power chord heavy and fast strumming. Highlights: -Take Me Out -Come on Home -40'

Never liked it at the time and still the same. Lot of fuss over nothing

very poppy, not for me.

It's okay, and I get why it was popular at the time, but I find a lot of it pretty uninteresting, and very, very repetitive. I was fully expecting to enjoy this a lot more than I did. They say a line. And then they say it again. And then they say it again. And then they say it again. And then they say it again. And again, and again, and again. And then - is that something different coming in?.. Nope. Same line again. And again, and again... Something about a matinée. Matinée, matinée, can't stop saying matinée. Singalong songs for people who struggle to remember lyrics. I suppose they deserve at least a little recognition for their ability to take about 3 min of actual unique musical content, stretch it into a 40 min album, and somehow make it a hit.

doesnt really hold a candle to what the arctic monkeys or the killers or the strokes did in the 2000s. i dont know why this is even on this list.

I don't like this music and think it sucks. Didn't listen but I've heard it before. Thumbs down.

one hit

I have a real problem with this sort of music from this sort of era… i just find it incredibly annoying….

A funny one, the album is remarkably weak given the promise of the first two singles, both of which are included here, and their b sides, this was disappointing at the time and disappointing this morning…one star. Tom.

Sounds too much like itself and all the other landfill indy.. Bland.

some time around the year 2000, indie music took a disappointing turn, and has yet to recover Something about this style of music and that style of singing just pisses me off Thanks, but No!

This album is just a bunch of uninteresting background music for me. While listening I felt mostly bored and indifferent. It sounds exactly like something that was made to play in football game menus or Nike adverts — fine for a few seconds, but the longer you listen, the more it becomes a chore. The songs have that typical post-punk dance-rock energy, but nothing really sticks. The riffs are repetitive, the hooks are weak, and the lyrics feel like they were written just to fill space rather than actually say anything meaningful. I tried to pay attention to them but quickly gave up. I’ve never understood the massive hype around this band. To me they’re pretty rubbish — style over substance, all pose and very little real personality or quality. This debut especially feels massively overrated. One listen was more than enough. Hard skip.

Generic pop music of its day. Nothing too objectionable but nothing exciting either. A couple of these tracks might still get me on the dance floor if I'd had a few beers but otherwise would go almost unnoticed. . The last few tracks almost wore me down but I persevered and listened to the end. Was quite glad when it was over though. Perhaps listening to it early on a dreary wet Monday morning didn't do it justice? Not that I will be listening to it again anyway.

Joyless arch rubbish masquerading as trendy. Stupid name stupid band

Obviously this one has some classics but it's not really scratching an itch. After a while it all sort of sounds the same.

1 star for the 1 good song

Big ass

This album caused WW1

No me gustó, todas las canciones tenían el mismo ritmo y en todas la letra era siempre repetitiva.

No me gusto.

Not very memorable.

I hate this album lol

I hate Take Me Out with a passion usually reserved for headbutting Nazis. A song which came to typify and herald the death rattle of Rock music as a commercial force. This album is that song, repeated several more times. It's so painfully exempt of ideas, so brutally barren of talent that of course it would soar to the top of the charts and plague the airwaves for months and years. You know a guitar based song is not worth hearing when it gleefully shares the ten song radio playlist with the latest boy band, girl band, bland mummy's favourite, quirky one bit wonder, and Simon Cowell special. It's every bit as throwaway as the worst of manufactured business oriented pop. Which is not to say any of those examples can't be good. There are plenty of great songs among those shitty sub-genres of music. But they're rare. What's even more rare is anything worth hearing on this album. From the same beat and tone in every song, the lack of depth and emotion in the vocals, the staccato tippy happy guitars, and holy fuck the terrible fashion, everything about this album and this band is the antithesis of music.

eeehhh... There is one decent tune for me on here... I'm seriously questioning, and have been for a while now, some of the LPs chosen for this list.

For me? Boring. They’re not really doing…much of anything, really! Literally not a single song grabbed my attention. Lyrics are pretty bland too. I respect that some people love this album and band, but I would never go out of my way to listen to this again. It’s not bad, just really really boring. I turned this off early because I was bored. 1 ⭐️

eyou he empezado con uno de the smiths, the queen is dead, pero bueno, a ver si logro hacer esto cada día (lo dudo).

cum out of urethra

gnee (biblioteca bocconi)

Not my sound honestly. Liked only one song.

FF(S). Does anyone really give the slightest shit about these in 2025 beyond "Take Me Out"? The streaming numbers paint a picture, but even that track can be attributed as fairly dated, throwaway "lads out on a bender" guff. An album that can't have too many complaints about being removed from newer editions of the book. Soulless shite.

De fick en hit med Take me out. Den var väl kul i en vecka. Resten känns som sämre variation av Take me out.

They want to Panic at the disco, the Beatles but chat shit like the streets. It's a mess of specials needs kids given instruments and told to go wild n

This album arrived with a huge bang, heralded as part of that post-punk revival alongside bands like **The Strokes**, **Interpol**, and **Bloc Party**. But now it is just one of those albums you regularly find clogging up charity shops across the country. At the time I think I even felt it had merit, mainly on the basis of “Take Me Out” with all its self-assured swagger. Revisiting it now I'm left with the feeling that it is a pedestrian and souless affair. It feels horribly calculated and driven purely by aesthetics. It's a hollow, charmless album with no emotional depth.and a complete lack of sonic diversity. I question it's relevance and right to be on this list. At best it's a reflection of a moment in time, but that doesn't make it essential or a timeless classic.

hate it

Falls in the bad euro dance category of the 00's. Garbage

This was the second suggestion in my 1001 albums playlist. I have heard Franz Ferdinand before, but hearing this album almost made me quit the entire project. It is probably one of the worst albums I have ever heard the song titled. Michael is particularly disgusting. Not from its content, but from its form and silly lyric I am a bitter person having listened to this album.

For every five there’s a one

I hated this it reminds me of the killers

Auf Asche is solid. Every millennial band vocalist sounds like this though. Sucks

no thank you

Guy trails up and down with his voice pitch way too much every sentence

Franz Cafcca

Pants. 3/10

BOOOOO

Absurd to me this album is among the rest for this project. Just because a bunch of people bought it because of one hit single doesn't make it good or worth sitting through. Their musical style is done better by any number of bands, and most of these songs are grating.

70's music released in the 00's. Leave the 70's music in the 70's. Please.

Take Me Out among my all time most hated radio singles and there are songs on here that are even worse. This Fire, truly awful. I see a lot of reviews trying to connect a legacy from Gang of Four. I even see a mention of Television. It takes a lot of contortion to see post punk in this shitty 00s dance rock. I think it shows how desperate this era of mainstream rock was for something a millionth as cool as punk. This band sucked then, thinking about them sucks now. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

Another one of these. I've been pretty bummed out by the selection of 2000s albums so far, and among my least favourite trends to come from the noughties was the popularisation of indie music. I admit that it's partly because I like belonging in a smaller pool of music listeners, but also because it brought a whole ton of wank bands that are indie in name but not in spirit. This album is the kind of music you'd bring up when talking with a work colleague. It carries an air of respect with it's cool, suave sound and flashy German name, but peek underneath the exterior and there's absolutely nothing going on. On a positive, I think Take Me Out is pretty good. I have a bad habit of thinking that the first 50 seconds of the song and the remaining ~3 minutes of music are two separate tracks, which is a contrast that I enjoy.

fuck off

Never liked them. Was over exposed to this stuff on the radio growing up

Can't say I was/am a big fan of the band, and after a listen to this album (was it their 1st?) my opinion has not changed. Take Me Out has had so much air play over the years it's almost become a white noise to me.

Franz Ferdinand is everything I love from music - indie with discordant guitars. Yet I absolutely hate it. Trite lyrics, unnecessary tempo changes and the worst kind of root note oompah bass that makes me think the player never learned an instrument in his life. I struggled through every awful, unlistenable song of this.

Simultaneously instantly recognisable and utterly forgettable... didn't like it then, don't like it now.

Terrible. However the bread rolls were biblical. Awful service…

How the fuck is this considered an album you have to hear before you die? Genuine bottom of the barrel indie landfill. The epitome of one hit wonder, god this sucks so hard (Take Me Out aside)

Not my cup.

Really annoying britpop

Not for me. The vocals make me want to commit sudoku.

Oof - no thank you. How did this album make the 1001 list?? Production, songs and lyrics were all annoying.

Meh, wasn’t a big fan then and don’t really see the appeal now either. I don’t think this album should be in the list

I tend to not care for Irish Indie rock. Definitely not morning coffee music. 1

Alternative rock band. Some good music.

Stress inducing music

i hate this i hate this i hate hate hate this i hate this i hate this i hate this i hate it

British Strokes... yuck

Not enjoyable, annoying vocals, musicianship is unremarkable

Did not like

It was blah. Reminded me of The Killers (I think the band had something with Kill in it). Liked the least of the three albums I’ve heard so far.

One good song.

Never been a fan

Do not like. Sounds amateur. Not sure why on list .

Exuberant, punchy record packed with chart-friendly numbers. And if that isn't enough to put you off then you deserve to listen to it on repeat until you rip out your own toenails. A poor, derivative imitation of illustrious forbears.

I hate this

I can’t explain why I’ve never liked this band other than I’ve always thought of them as pretentious and annoying. Maybe it’s just the extreme disappointment I felt when I first heard ‘Take Me Out’. An incredible first 1 minute and 3 seconds of intro, that built my hopes up far too high for the dross that was to follow. So, with an open mind I listened to this today. And I was right about them. Still just annoying. And there are better ways to experience 1 minute and 3 seconds of joy 🤣

Wish it didn't exist

Didn’t really like this album. Seemed that all the songs sounded the same.

Rejection. Revenge. Repeat, retarded. Archduke Franz Ferdinand Carl Ludwig Joseph Maria was the heir presumptive to the throne of Austria-Hungary. His assassination in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914 is considered the most immediate cause of the first World War. ‘His life, or at least the ending of it,’ recalls bassist Bob Hardy, ‘was the catalyst for the complete transformation of the world and that is what we want our music to be. But I don’t want to over-intellectualize the name thing. Basically a name should just sound good… like music.’ Drummer Paul Thompson followed up, saying, ‘I like the idea that, if we become popular, maybe the words Franz Ferdinand will make people think of the band instead of the historical figure.’ This never really worked out very well for my girlfriend in college who formed a country/funk fusion group, performed one live gig, and then promptly broke up. The Mary Queen of Scots were too far ahead of their time. This is a dumb name for a dumb band with a dumb sound. Nothing noteworthy here, save the absence of any instrumental breaks whatsoever. I didn’t hear one guitar solo, bass run, drum fill, piccolo trill, triangle shred… nothing. And lyrically? Well, here’s one really dumb example from the song, ‘Auf Achse’: ‘Now I’m nailed above you gushing from my side. It’s with your sins that you’ve killed me, thinking of your sins I die. Thinking how you’ve let them touch you, how you’d never realize than I’m ripped and hang forsaken knowing never will I rise again.’ A comparison upgrade, at least, from the Austrian Archduke. But a dumb one. Far as I can tell, this is an entire LP replete with unrequited love songs, each one dumber than the next (alleviating Hardy’s concern about any over-intellectualization.) But don’t feel too sorry for these boys. Their lyrics betray their own moral culpability in repeating the same dumb choices. Furthermore, it speaks volumes about the lyricist’s true feelings when he concludes a plea for her to ‘Come On Home’ with the lyric ‘But don’t forget to leave.’ That idea’s just plain… what’s the adjective I’m looking for?

Dreadful

ну чот такой рокешник у меня не в почёте, какой-то обычный, голосящий, ничем не привлекательный, одинаковый и без изюма

listened to some. don't care. kind of boring

sucked. bad. poop

Ok riffs but boring and bland lyrics

no thanks

Muy bueno, me falla el final

ya it rocks!! I Zimbra is really cool and energizing, and it sounds a lot like their other album i like but maybe a little more mainstream? idk would need to listen to the other one again but this kinda whips
