Reviews (page 12 of 13)
Not as bad as the last pj Harvey album on this list. But still not my favorite. A little bid of KD Lang vibe
40/100
5/10 TF: This mess we're in/Kamikaze
Thom yorke jump scare(s)
By no means the worst album I've encountered here - but probably the biggest gap between expectation and delivery. 'This is Love' is a mighty, elemental rocker. So much else, however, feele like it's trying a bit too hard to be hip or smart and not quite getting there. And much of the music commits the cardinal sin of simply being dull. Disappointing.
Instrumentals really save this album imo, but I’m not a big fan of the lyrics. Just wasn’t into this album. Big Exit: 👍 Good Fortune: 👍 A Place Called Home: 👎 One Line: 👎 Beautiful Feeling: 👎 The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore: 👎 The Mess We’re In: 👎 You Said Something: 👍 Kamikaze: 👍 This Is Love: 👍 Horses In My Dreams: 👎 We Float: 👎
Vähän vaisu eikä painunu mieleen
Not really an album for me or my music style so take with a grain of salt.
It seemed ok, but not really my genre.
Overall, pretty boring
Si no digo que no...
I listened this on Spotify. It wasn’t jumping out at me and I just let it play in the background. Then I thought the album ended and Spotify auto played Radiohead and I was delighted. But it was just Thom Yorke on this album and that was the only thing that grabbed my attention.
What I’m about to write may sound quite anecdotal, I realize. I don’t know if it’s a blip in thinking of the record production industry, but something stands out to me about music of my formative years (1990-2010), and the proliferation of the CD and giving people the ability to skip tracks in a way they never could before. Suddenly, you didn’t NEED to have a killer track to lead off your album, so you’d tuck your bullshit shitty songs up front and the “album” became less of a front to back experience and more of a music husk to deliver whatever single the radio was playing for you. The album was now like the supermarket, milk in the back. The lead song of this album is fucking garbage and I almost stopped listening because it’s just bad, full stop. She’s painfully out of tune just rancid introduction to the rest of it. But the second track is great and so is most of the other stuff. I think nowadays, they just try to have “no shite songs” on albums but yeah, for a moment this is what happened, I’m sure of it.
Meh
I think I liked Rid Of Me, but this was disappointing. Nothing reached me until The Mess We're In. Wait, what? Radiohead? But it was just a mediocre b-side. Then after, into obscurity again.
I must be missing something because I can't figure out why the hell this is on the list. 2/5
I tried for a week to get through this album. It’s just so god damned boring. Even Thom Yorke couldn’t spice this up. It’s like if you took Radiohead and Fiona Apple but took away everything that gave them any sort of passion.
Not bad, didn’t stick out to me.
Would have rather spent the length of this album listening to sounds of the sea, then I might have actually found something worth listening too
Slow, grungy, and boring. Not my cup of tea. ol' Thommy getting some features!
The songs were too similar, nothing special, and I didn't particularly enjoy the voice.
Shout out to Thom Yorke
This album is OK. There’s some big vocals and some good points but mostly it’s the same old same old. There’s nothing very catchy and some parts are almost annoying. My seven-year-old asked why are we listening to this song and we had no answer. 2/5
Meh. Inte värt att ge hela en chans
Klang interessant
I'm unimpressed
I don't get why some think her music is good. It's really dull and pedestrian
Meh album.
Nirvana in 2000's - Meh
Not fan of PJ’s.
Low 2. It was nothing special but not the worst thing I’ve heard. Coffee shop music
1.5/5
Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure someone would enjoy it
Meh. Just…meh. Not bad, just like white wallpaper. Nothing catchy, nothing especially interesting. More references to NYC than the RHCP’s have to California. It’s a cup of NYC tea and it just ain’t mine.
Meh
Only three tracks of the album were offered on YTM, they were alright but nothing to write home about.
Tja... Niet zo heel best dit weer
It was ok for me. Nothing stood out really positively or negatively
This is not my cup of tea. The vocals, the lyrics, and the instrumentation all felt tired and uninteresting
The vocals were shrill and listenable. The instrumentals were bland and uninteresting.
good - big exit, a place called home annoying - good fortune, the one with thom yorke in it couple glimmers and mostly fillers, love the vibe, feels timeless 2.5
Teils schöne Melodien und guter Klang. Nicht zum durchhören geeignet. Nicht immer mein Geschmack.
PJ Hardley, am I right?
Some tracks are ok but I wouldn't listen to this again. Maybe an upper 2.
It’s a story
Eh…not good, not bad but I feel like I would have rather listened to a Pretenders album and enjoyed it more.
Not my cup of tea. Think the album is very of it's time, but doesn't personally stand the test of time.
snooze but loud
I wanted to like this now than I did. It is just sort of boring. My mond wandered through most of it and if anything exciting happened, I must have missed it. Even Thom couldn't save it.
There wasn't really anything in this album for me, maybe I need to have listened to the lyrics more
Loved the Thom Yorke song, rest wasn't really my thing.
I respect the artistry more than I like it. The wailing and ethereal vibes just aren't my jam, and I really dislike the male features on the album. Not a terrible album, but not anything I particularly enjoy. I will say I appreciated that the songs felt like they moved at a pretty quick pace. Fav tracks: A Place Called Home, We Float
It was ok. Not my usual type of music that I listen to.
Raw, lyrics outadated
Disappointed.
It was tolerable enough to have running in the background until she started yelling. "If you can't sing just scream" is not good advice.
sometimes you hear an album that sounds very much of it's era, that perfectly makes sense in slotting into the musical canon in that time. this is one of those albums. some catchy stuff but overall not my favorite of the 90's/00's sound. some pretty good songs on it thought.
think i would prefer her earlier grungey albums. every now and then her voice goes raspy and i expect hole-esque grunge but the energy isnt there to match.
Langweilig

Not what I was looking for today. Maybe it strikes more of a cord with me another day.
Wasn’t really feeling this one. Songs never seemed to go anywhere. Was ok.
Alas, no story from either the city or the sea pulled enough at the cockles of my heart to offer a "Wow" moment. PJ Harvey is of course to be respected as a musician and songwriter but her style is just not for me.
Too grungy
It was meh.
Niet zo bijzonder
2/5. I mean, maybe this is deeper than it seems but nothing really stands out as innovative or interesting. There are some good songs but not ones I would necessarily go out of my way to listen to, just ones that could be on and I would enjoy it. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there is some good songwriting here, it just doesn't seem for me.
Not my favorite..like a few songs.. too much drug/gun negativity even though she is raw and real which I like about her
Overall - 4/10 1. Big Exit - 5/10 2. Good Fortune - 4/10 3. A Place Called Home - 5/10 4. One Line - 4/10 5. Beautiful Feeling - 3/10 6. The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore - 4/10 7. This Mess We're In - 4/10 8. You Said Something - 4/10 9. Kamikaze - 3/10 10. This Is Love - 4/10 11. Horses in My Dreams - 4/10 12. We Float - 4/10
Meh, diet bjork
My favorite songs were You said something and The mess we're in. I liked the chiller songs that have less rock influences but I feel like the album as a whole was pretty generic. Not terrible to listen to but not something I really enjoyed. 2 stars
2.5
Totally inoffensive album. Not great, not terrible. I don’t really love this artist, in fact my favourite song on the album is mostly sung by someone else. 4/10 Top 1: 1. This Mess We’re In
Nothing special
Don't like her voice but like the duet with Tom yorke
I've never listened to PJ Harvey but I know of them. I'm pretty sure they are more an attitude/performance type of artist vs just a band/singer. I had heard Good Fortune before for sure, not sure about anything else on this album. Some of the songs and vibe weren't quiet or mellow but they felt so much like background music I was kind of drifting listening to it. Not especially my jam.
I don't know. It's fine. Not sure if it's necessary listening.
It’s objectively great. Musically it is haunting and I can see into the artists mind. Its fantastic in songwriting, that being said, it is absolutely not my style but thats ok with me. I like much more aggressive sounds, alt rock just isnt my genre.
Eh.
eh
Didn't much care for most of the album. It's not a good sign when I check my music player for how much time is left to go to finish the album
Liked only a few songs. Two with TY, and only one of her own lol
Cutting branches
I don't get it. Best Song(s): N/A Listen Again: No
This album is a mixed bag. The compositions are good on paper, but usually feel like they're missing something. It often feels like songs are unfinished, or at the very least that PJ Harvey is holding back. The mixes often feature great tones, but just as often there will be weird decisions. Overall, it's a boring listen, but inoffensive.
Not my cup of tea. Too feminine poppy something. 2 star
Meh
Not really my cup of tea. 'You said something' was good, but other than that it really didn't hit home for me.
Seems like something Jan from The Office would like. Lyrics are angsty and cheesy. Melodies are droney and repetitive. Only redeeming quality was the vocals, but the content was just poor.
Meh
Jog on Harvey Proper junk, Harvey!
PJ Harvey makes music for an audience I don't think I will ever be able to understand, the best tracks on this album are... - One Line - Beautiful Feeling - This Mess We're In As someone who loves indie music really sad I didn't resonate with this album, although if Thom Yorke and PJ Harvey made an album together, I would be explore more. Large parts of this album feel like a cheap country album and the best parts are Thom Yorke.
Not a bad indie Rock album from PJ, considering what her previous albums were like, because they werent good. But I found there wasn't one track that made me say, yeah that was good. The duets with Thom Yorke were extremely painful to listen to, awful in fact, i think hell will freeze over before i ever listen to those again. If she was playing at a festival gig on one of the stages... you might stop an listen for a while, but you'd very soon slide on to find something better, which I don't think would be too difficult. She does seem to have a good fan base that promote rave reviews for her... but this one's not for me.
This album blended into the background so much I'd forgotten I was listening to it. It's bland, boring and I wouldn't ever decide to play it again.
An ok album, the sound really wasn't my vibe and am struggling to comprehend how it made the top 50 in both UK and US with over 1 million albums sold worldwide. PJ Harvey looks like the Veronicas if they were cosplaying as an early 00s office-worker. Average album at best in my opinion. Best: This Mess We're In Worst: We Float
Really did not like this. I know I could give it another shot but nothing appealed to me. I disliked the singing and at most times it was too prominent to notice the music.
The Thom Yorke duet was cool. The rest of the album didn’t really grab me.
One of the most confusing artists on the list for me. Just can't understand it. I did like this more than the other album of hers I listened to. I feel like there is no melody in her songs. 2 stars because Good Fortune was alright.
Not my deal
This album was “grrrl riot” stuff for coffee shops. Not my thing really.
I just didn't vibe with this Idk why man Just not my style I guess 🤷♀️
I didn’t click with any of these. Rambling
Pretty uneventful and forgetable, there were a couple of points where songs were going at 6/4 which added a bit of difference but they were pretty much just flashes in a sea of dull.
3/3- Driving to school
Hmm. Well, I kinda liked “This Mess We’re In” with Thom Yorke. He was a welcome parachute when I was rapidly falling from the previous tracks on this record. Maybe he lost a bet and had to record with PJ? Maybe a triple dog dare gone bad? Her voice is a bit grating, kinda like a modern Yoko screaming softly, but I’m sure that’s what her fans like because it’s harsh and raw and true and authentic bla bla bla cue ‘artistic expression’ as we all sit back with amazement listening to her genius. Not sure why this made the 1000 tbh.
I’m not sure I really get it with PJ. On first listen I feel like the best tracks were not much more than Patti Smith covers and the rest was fairly dull
It was alright but dropped off for me after some solid openers.
Some pretty basic indie rock. Not bad but not too interesting. The songs with Thom Yorke were interesting. It’s amazing how just his voice can elevate a song.
Even when I was going through my PJ Harvey phase back in 2021 I still found her voice to be somewhat annoying. Not for me, I completely get the appeal though. 2/5
Meh
5/10
Mehl
Don’t like her voice, music was okay.
Try Hard
This album was a snooze fest, exceedingly mid.
Preferred the second half of the album. I like the last few tracks. First half was uninteresting. Possibly overrated in my view.
Songs all sounded the same, maybe will be appreciated in 10 years time, couldn't predict when it would end
Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, Stories I’d be happy to go without hearing again
Interesting concept but too homogeneous in its sound."This Mess We're In" is a clear highlight but the other tracks fell flat, especially in comparison. Really wanted to like this album but just... Couldn't.
09/19/22 Got through about 3 songs. Nothing caught my attention, nothing moved me. Just sounded like glorified griping.
Breathy, simple, kinda boring.
fav song - beautiful thing - thom yorke :) and the guitar sounds good on this one least fav - you said something - guitar is especially annoying and sloppy on this one
I’m sorry but I was just bored for most of the album 😭 I’ve listened to other songs by PJ Harvey that were more enjoyable to my taste. Big exit was too distorted for me to understand half the words. I did like one line and this mess.
I made it about halfway through this album before giving up. It was okay at best. I liked how evocative the lyrics were but the music itself was well below the standard of some of the albums lately. 28/100gecs.
This seemed like one of those albums where I could put it on in the background and wait for that "single" track that speaks to me. Unfortunately I didn't hear anything this time around. I don't think I really gave this one a fair shake so I might give it another listen.
Not really my thing and sounds a bit dated/shows it's age in a bad way. I know her name and that she was huge alongside other 'alternative' female artists of her time. Maybe I need to give it another few listens, but it didn't truly grab me
First time listening to PJ Harvey. "Big Exit" was a promising start and had me excited for what was to come, unfortunately, with the exception of "The Whores Hustle..", the rest of the album was a letdown. The songs were either too poppy for my taste, or lacked the energy of the two aforementioned tracks. Not bad overall, but two good songs do not an essential album make.
Looks like something I would know or listen too. Maybe my mood but I find it irritating
Hmm okay, not sure why PJ Harvey is on the list so much. Surely there are better albums out there.
Not doing anything for me. Seems pretty out of date, punky grunge in 2000? I had it over the weekend end, listened once on the Friday and had no desire to listen again.
Interesting but didn’t blow my socks off, or even halfway down. I’m not sure if I have some sort of aural disability with PJ Harvey, but I don’t seem to dig her sound.
Still walking the fine line between calm and chaotic, although maybe a bit more refined in places than prior PJ Harvey albums. As I've said with other artists that have multiple albums on this list, I don't understand what makes this one substantially different from PJ Harvey's debut album, such that she merits double billing. It would make more sense to me to just have a shorter list, then continuing to fill it with multiple albums from the same artist that basically represent the same thing.
I didn't realize I knew / had heard so much of PJ Harvey's songs. Cool album. Easy to listen to. Remnants of the 90s all over the place. Can definitely hear heavy influence from The Cranberries. Angsty. This is the album that you play on a road trip and end up falling asleep while driving.
The bass lines are the most interesting part. Unfortunately, I don’t mean this as a compliment. Some tracks are lyrically rote and lacking vocal dynamic variation. There are a few nice ones nestled in. I’m scratching my head as to why I need to hear this one before I die though. 1.5 stars.
Another day, another album that is just fine.
I'm getting late period U2 vibes off this album. I mean, it's ok, but mostly it's super conventional dad-rock. And Thom Yorke singing "all day I dream of making love to you" is just creepy.
Meh it was okay. Kinda like a British tori amos I guess? Forgettable.
Meh
Fav Song: This is Love
Really not a fan of her voice or the music... It wasn't awful but I didn't enjoy myself.
People I respect love PJ Harvey and I understand why. But it's not for me. One extra star for the places in Good Fortune where she reminds me of Chrissie Hynde.
Too 2000s-y, too boring, too similar, too much not for me
I got through 2 songs before I started skipping. There wasn't anything exciting happening at all.
Meh...
The album was ok. It wasn't fully indie music but it was close. I was not familiar with the artist or any of the songs.
Didn’t listen to the whole album. She had a good voice and instrumentals are great but every song had a similar tone
Along all the crap she records, this one is at least listenable
I didn't really like this. I just don't like how it sounds. I find it very hard to listen to.
Voice is very grating
Kinda boring, very influenced by ok computer and probably Joan jet. The song “you said something” in particular reminds me of subterranean homesick alien. The thom Yorke feature surprised me. I doubt I’d ever go back to this though.
This artist is clearly talented and has a lot to say. Unfortunately, it's really not my cup of tea today. I think the genre of this album is alt rock, and it probably fits there, but it doesn't resonate with me very much. I'm giving is 2 stars, but might be convinced it's worth 3 at a later date.
Bland, boring and repetitive barbage.
She has a great voice, but overall just didn't get this
pj who meh
If Phoebe from “Friends” had an album.
Kon me niet echt bekoren. Its a nah for me
Second rate Fiona Apple
Yeah, I mean this definitely feels like its from the 2000s. I can see how this influenced music, but the sound is almost too nostalgic for my tastes now. Probably because I didn't grow up listening to it, so I don't have the connection
Meh
People who love the music I love adore Harvey, and think I should also. I do not love Harvey. It's another case of the voice grating on me, I'm afraid. I'm so influenced by that when enjoying music, and her voice really turns me off. It's a shame really because musically this could be pretty great.
2/5
I don't think I've heard of her before and don't understand why this album has any significance. I don't think it's bad and it does have pleasant moments, but it just doesn't really seem interesting or innovative to me in any way. Sounds like radio-friendly background music to me. 2.5 rounded down.
Just like ya mate made an album and now you feel like you have to listen to it. This never really got me going and there were also a couple of shite songs.
Not my style.
Similar to other folks, its just a generic Indie sound and not one that I particularly enjoyed
It was a good listen, definitely of a certain era/point in time in altpop music. I didn't love it, but no complaints.
Nice P.Js Simpson
This album doesn't make sense to me on this list. It's nondescript and doesn't really stand out musically. Maybe there are some deep lyrics buried in there, but my interest in finding them is low. There were thousands of albums that sounded like this in the late 90's and I'm not sure what made this one stand out enough to make this list.
Beetje slappe rock
Tiz alright, not something I would run out and buy
not very interesting
Poor man’s Fiona Apple
People who love the music I love adore Harvey, and think I should also. I do not love Harvey. It's another case of the voice grating on me, I'm afraid. I'm so influenced by that when enjoying music, and her voice really turns me off. It's a shame really because musically this could be pretty great.
Didn't really get anything out of this.
Kun enkelte gode sange, meget larm
Like Horses but way better
A bit too grungy and atonal for me. Tom Yorke featured track 7 wasn't too bad, and the intro to track 11.
Meh. Very bland and unspecial.
Pitchfork strikes out again
I don't get why so many 5's or what critics found appealing. What I hear are three note melodies and dull, repetitive, angsty lyrics. "We Float" seemed like the only one with some redeeming musical qualities but even those were embedded in dah dah de dah notes repeated over and over and uninspiring lyrics. Sorry, another 1 from this listener.
Unfortunately, this wasn’t my kind of music.
Bored me.
Damn. I really wanted this to go somewhere. The album opens on a strong riff, seemingly pressurized to explode into something that could captivate for its full runtime. Each time I expected the groove to drop, we crossed the barline and landed on... nothing? The opening number ends pretty much how it begins (much like the album itself), and although I maintained hope that its momentum would carry to the second track, it instead zigs where it should zag. Thom Yorke materializes about halfway through and nails this coffin shut, effectively prophesying that no rock will be had here. Although "Kamikaze" finally reaches for the heights I hoped would emerge in the first two minutes of this album, it's too late to salvage the lost potential. 1/5, reminds me of my first lay. Full of promise up front, digresses into awkwardness for a half hour, then finally achieves two minutes of long-awaited engagement, ultimately leaving all involved disappointed that the whole hour wasn't like that.
Ich mags nicht
It just didn't land properly on my ears today. I absolutely love the Thom Yorke track and there was maybe one more that stood out in the later half. For so much of the record though I just couldn't figure out why it should be interesting or especially good to listen to. I know I'm wrong - I've loved pj Harvey stuff in the past when I've given it more of a chance. This just felt kind of dry to me today most of the way through
All the songs sound the same to me and I really dislike her voice
artist has such a narrow range. Music is one dimensional
not a fan but i liked we float and love the aesthetic of the album cover
Not my type
Not good
I had not heard of them before. Cool to see a Thom Yorke teamup.
Bleh
you said something - boa vibe calminha one line - kamikaze - n gostei we float - a bridge é melhor parte mas overral deu me sono. a place called home - fiona core good fortune - gostei brautiful feeling - simplesmente nao
Yeah, whatever. Very forgettable music about drugs, sex, and deviant behavior. Radiohead wannabe and doesn't even come close. 2/10
Sorry PJ I won’t listen again didn’t enjoy any tracks
Never got into PJ.
Thanks, I hate it.
At first, I thought this was too generic to be awful. Then it continued on. This is fucking horrendous.
Imma gonna pass
I really didn’t enjoy her lyrics or delivery, whole album was samey. Did not excite my ears at all. Couldn’t wait for it too end
Lesbian rock
Fun but it’s given “but dad I want to go to fashion school”
Like a modern day Yoko ono. The screeching killed my ears
Nothing about this had any kind of spark to my ear. Less interesting version of Radiohead.
Not my type
I didn't like her voice. The music was standard 90s alternative. Overall not for me.
Didnt listen
I could have done without this one...
Dosta loše, baš ono dosta. 1/5, 1/10
Cannot imagine a scenario where I would willingly put this on
Uninteressting
Meh
Very low opinion of this album lol. It was sonically annoying, lyrically superficial, and really seemed to lack any focus or coherent throughline. Every song both sounded the same but, paradoxically, like they had nothing to do with one another. Will refrain from judging the entirety of PJ Harvey off of this album though. I hear that this is generally seen as her most commercial album and not a big reflection of her whole work, and that she doesn't return to this album herself. But I really don't like the song writing, the music itself is limited and boring, the singing is hard on the ears - especially when trying to do any kind of 'grunge'. Big pass for me.
The music is pretty good, but the vocals just ruin it for me. Vocals that are screamy, whiny, unhinged, one dimensional and at times almost forced. They just don't work for me. At all. I hate them truth be told. A lot. Only Courtney Love in the first few Hole releases can get away (and make them work brilliantly in the first couple Hole albums both 5/5 1990s masterpieces) with these broken, angry, psycho wronged mama, PTSD drenched, exorcism type of vocals. I think I'll play some Hole right now & get the taste of the city & the sea out of my mouth they taste like piss to me.
Nope
Not a fan of her voice/style of music
Really boring. No songs stuck out. I even like a PJ Harvey song, but I didn’t enjoy this.
Not for me. 1/5
Just never understood why she was as popular as she was. It's very meh.

Kind of boring
Not my thing
not my favorite but pretty famous
It's for someone, just not me.
Polly Jean is great. But one album is enough. Most acts only need one. So this is a solid 3.5. But I’m giving it one. When will you critics understand she’s not interested in you. It’s probably a must listen PJ Harvey album. Not a must listen 1000 album.
Did not enjoy, it is not my vibe
Really boring. Im not a big fan
Repetitive riffs and screechy vocals. Absolutely nothing interesting here.
I just can’t get into her voice and delivery.
didnt like it boring
1 out of 5.
I should have heeded the warning of the first song.
Literal indie girl walking around New York music. The overarching aesthetic of all critically acclaimed music from the last 30 years distilled into one photo. I’ve obviously heard of PJ Harvey, but I don’t think I’ve heard one second of her music. Fire away ol PJ. We have gentrifying to do. Whoa. Shouty. Music is nicer when it slows down, but oh boy that first 2 minutes was not great. It’s almost as if it’s trying to be a romantic pop but also have this edge that is cringe inducing. Not a strong start. N-o-o-o-o-o-o-o. Divorced mom radio music for vaguely conservative 20 somethings with a weaponized relationship to spirituality. Gross. Is this the Madonna water album again? Pass. Maybe this is the “sea” portion of the album. Now I’m just bored. That’s the most evil an album can get. From bad to bored is the most insidious combo that be inflicted upon your humble (and very weary) listener. RADIOHEAD CROSSOVER. RYM HAS HIT THEIR TRAFFIC LIMIT. This song is actually not bad, but it also sounds slightly like Creed intros for 2000 WWF shows. That’s my fucking wheelhouse. Oh man. I had serious money that Nick Cabe wrote this song. This vocal line screams our fourth favourite Australian Elvis impersonator. The lyrics do too by the way. I kind of like her insane vocalizing. He’s back. Radiohead man singing about New York. I mean am I wrong???? Is that what this list is? Why do people romanticize living in cities? When I am in large cities there is a palpable contempt, nay, hatred emanating from everybody with the target being everybody else. They are the loneliest places on earth despite being packed with the least interesting people from every town across the world. There are some interesting locals, but they are washed asunder by the droves of exiles from commuter towns across the continent who listen to and write albums like this. Hey, at least we can walk to that authentic Swahili barbecue/barbershop with the 29 dollar cocktails. Brooklyn mentioned. Seriously. Oh my god I can’t even make this up. I can’t despise this aesthetic anymore. This makes me so incredibly angry. What did he say????? Who cares right? We were young and artistic and important and on a roof in a particular city at 1am. We’re all in “Across the Universe.” If I wasn’t so mad at this thing, I’d probably like this song more. Quick, a little more chaotic, and the more insane vocals. Boring. Less insufferable but still veering that way with the repetition. Doesn’t a horse in your dream mean you’re about to drop a really shitty album? See, I like the weirdness of this one a little bit. If we stayed with the more eccentric low tones, I’d be far happier with this thing. Although this stays way too long. Lingering like the stench of urine after the L train passes or whatever. Oh buddy a radio hit. PJ is floating down here with the rest of us. PJ “Excess” Harvey?? We learn so much more about our songstress track by track. This blows HARD. Guess what. You’ll never guess. The woman who spent the last 45 minutes caterwauling about New York and attempting to create a city atmosphere is from A SMALL TOWN. In England no less, but same difference. I have detailed my feelings on the romanticism that gets erroneously spooned atop the concept of living in a large city and don’t need to give this album the satisfaction of doing it again. The music itself ranged from decent to abysmal and what we’re left with is an all but barren release carried by the decided poignance anointed by indie nerds. Whether you’re fading into a fentanyl coma in midtown Manhattan or in Antigonish, Nova Scotia dreaming of walkable vintage sweatpant bodegas, this album still sounds like an embarrassing collection of cliches thrown at the wall. Somebody come in and clean this up; it smells like gentrification. 1 HIGHLIGHTS: Beautiful Feeling, Kamikaze
Did not care for at all
I didn’t like a single song on this album
1* snore
Wanted to like it and only found myself really enjoying the last track — we float. Great vocals though. I think I couldn’t get past her lyrics
I had trouble listening all the way through. Some bright spots but nothing that really distinguished the music for me.
Still didn’t really enjoy
Personally, I just don’t like music like this
Straight up boring. Maybe if I was depressed and high this would sound okay.
meh
Terrible
Didn’t listen
Impression of her today is so different from the time I first heard her.
There is practically nothing remarkable about the instrumentation, the lyrics are so-so, and her voice is downright annoying. I’m not surprised that I’ve never heard of PJ Harvey; there’s not much of not to have heard.
Terrible
Mir bisher gänzlich unbekannt, nicht mein Fall. Viele Lieder eher eintönig, für meinen Geschmack langweilig.
I just find PJ Harvey so dull.
Awful! Dreadful voice - not my thing at all
Finally, the album equivalent of chewing glass. A great listen if you're on the fence about suicide and want something to push you over the edge.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
ni frio ni calor
I really tried but DNF. Fingernails on a blackboard.
Not my fave
eh
yet another singer songwriter guitar strum-along, but this time with overdriven guitar mediocre at its best NNN
Some of the most generic shit I have ever heard. I had to fight the instinct to skip every single song. My finger would hover over the skip button and I would have to pull myself back. I think a Muse song snuck its way in the middle. Excuse me while I go stick chopsticks into my ear canals. 2/10
This ain't it.
overall not great. maybe 1 or 2 songs were okay.
¿Te acuerdas de como sonaba este disco? No, ¿Verdad?
Yawn 🥱
Fucking dire, not something I would willingly put myself through again! I only made it through the first 4 tracks.
Really did not enjoy this album. Very similar songs and her voice has the same small range for every song. Very monotonous and don't think that this should be one of the 1001 albums to listen to before you die.
This is monotone and depressing music.
Slightly punky Cool falsetto Cool voice generally Pretty dirge like Lyrically very intricate and musically pretty crap Kamikaze is funky Not sure this is very good icl More like poetry set to music and I'm not convinced by either The more rocky 'the wicked tongue' is much better imho - wolf Alice vibes
Hörbar, aber ist mir zu verfahren. Weiss nicht wo es hin will. Nicht mein Ding
Not good and the half screaming type of singing doesn't work for her. You Said Something and We Float were the only half decent songs.
She was flat
Typical 2000s music. Good vocalist with rhythm band. Boring
Did not enjoy
blah
While I didn't actively dislike this album, I felt that it committed the worst sin in music; IT WAS BORING. Best Songs: You Said Something Worst Songs: Kamikaze,
Found myself not really liking this. Objectively it’s fair to say that it’s well put together and well performed but I couldn’t get into most of the songs. The style of singing and pace might have been the culprit. Or I just might have an aversion to alt-rock with melodic punk-ish singing. 2.5/10
Wtf
Seeing all the awards this artist & album received but trying to figure out what I'm missing. Just seems like boring, depressing, low-energy, pretentious dreck to me. I know taste is subjective, so maybe it's just me or the my mood today. /shrug
Not available on Apple Music
Absolutely qualifies as music.
i never knew of pj harvey before this 1001 albums project, and i wish i still didn't. third album of hers i've heard, and it's absolutely not for me. it's boring. her voice drones on and on. there's nothing exciting or different in her songs. cool album cover is all i've got.
Not for me. The same droning, dirge guitar on every track. Depressing. Didn't like her in the 90s, still don't.
Pretentious and self-centred. No thanks
Meh
Like a cat slowly dying from eating a rat that died from consuming rat poison.
The first return of pj Harvey could not catch my attention so it will join the ever growing collection of albums that I will completely disregard
One of the best female songwriters of the 90s, along with Bjork. Possibly her high-water mark.
Very irritating, one wiht thom was alright
honestly the first real miss for me. Like the vibe just couldn't enjoy the actual music except for that song with thom yorke but that's just bc I love radiohead
4/10 I liked her voice, for the most part, but out of 12 songs, I could almost finish listening to one! Not my sort of thing, I'm afraid.
Somewhere between boring and annoying. I don't like it
