A little sleepy for me

Kinda boring. Definitely of its time. A couple good tracks but overall not really my cup of tea. Added to library: Big Exit

Really medium album. Unfortunately for this list, medium has become not quite good enough.

Favorite tracks: This Is Love, The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore Overall, not impressed with this album. There were two tracks I would maybe revisit, but even those didn't wow me. It felt a bit like she was trying to be edgy, but never quite got there for me.

WTF. I am sure this person has fans but definitely not for me.

Barely listened

This is ok for what it is, but there is nothing remarkable here. Well made and well produced, just not very interesting.

I forgot to take notes while listening and I don’t remember anything about it. I know I didn’t like it.

Probably much better in its time, but I found it pretty unremarkable overall, felt like music that would be playing at a JC Penney. The one Thom Yorke track was somewhat interesting, but I think just because it was a new vocal rather than actually liking the song. Feels like a 2.5.

I like her voice, but the songs are just so dull and samey, no real hooks or anything to make me pay attention. The only song I liked was the one with Thom Yorke. Fav track (already in library) - This Mess We're In

I mean I put it on but nothing really jumped out. Retail store music. Non offensive (other than some spicy lyrics) but not exciting. Would give 2.5 if I could.

I don't know what it is that other people hear in this music that I'm not hearing. To each their own I suppose.

Wow honestly didn’t know PJ Harvey was a woman. Maybe thought they were off PJ & Duncan? Awful music, moany & a Radiohead collab 👎🏼

Wish I had the words to describe why this album felt grating and slow to me, because I think i enjoyed the other PJ Harvey album we've gotten during this project. Everything felt kind of quiet and plodding.

Not my vibe

Ambient, moody guitar riffs that are kinda cool. Some of the vocals strike me as out of tune or grating. Hard to understand the lyrics

Some dirgier parts were a little tough to sit through but especially at the start were some solid pop rock.

Didn't get much out of this. The last song was nice. Also there's 2 Thom Yorke features and one the first one, he just sort of moans and wails for a bit ovwr the track. Made me giggle when I realized that was going to be the extent of his contribution.

Boring. Sounded like every other mildly successful female artist in the 90s (I'm not talking about queens like Mariah and Whitney). I had never heard of her before and will happily go back to never listening to her again.

Saw her open for U2 and couldn't wait for her set to end. She sounds like someone yelling at you with a bullhorn. Decent # of listens for the entire album. Not sure why. 25M for "Good Fortune" which is annoying as fuck. 69M for "This Mess We're In". 24M for "This Is Love". I had no idea she had a following, she has no music on the radio outside of "Down By The Water". This was my era, I just didn't connect with her sound, and it's not a good thing to revisit 25 yrs later. 2.5 stars for not being awful and for including Thom Yorke on a few tracks.

This is so fucking boring

Pretty avant-rock. Structures are different, but overall a pleasant tone. Harmonies and progressions are pretty unique and cool throughout each track. But it takes a certain mood and attention to get the most from these tracks. Thom Yorke is a surprise on “The Mess We’re In.” This album does sound very much like a more guitar-and-acoustic-instrument-oriented Radiohead record. Maybe a little less experimental than that, but similar vibes. Some weird choices in production where vocal peaks are staticky. Sounds like when a vinyl is cut too hot. Not for me and rather annoying to me. I appreciate some of this record (especially on the front half or so), but overall, I’m not sure if it’s for me. 4.5-5/10 Standout(s):

didnt really pay much attention while listening to this one, played only in the background while cleaning my room. it had a good vibe overall, it gave the y2k movies soundtrack feeling. but it isnt really anything i would come back to, no special melody that would stay in my head.

I listen to a good chunk of these albums with my wife while we enjoy some fresh air in the evenings on the balcony. I'd normally share my review, but I thought some of what she said was dead on, so I'm going to incorporate it. She isn't doing anything new that the female vocalists of the 70s haven't already done. I think you'd need to be on heroin to enjoy this properly.

Feels like the music was made separately from the vocalist. It sounds like music made to be popular with less individualism.

Felt a little generic and bland. Did not stand out as an amazing alt rock from the early 2000s, unsure why on the list. Not bad, not good, feels a little like an industry plant.

Not great, nineties coffee house music. A lot of these albums have been really dull recently. What’s going on? Don’t you expect the greatest albums to be made by virtuoso musicians and not singer-songwriters? I understand that these albums are well-liked, but do they sound like the greatest records ever?

It had some interesting moments but not enough to save it.

Love the voice, and in many tracks it's actually far, far stronger than the instrumental part. I was unfamiliar and it was good to give a listen. It didn't move me or catch me, but I liked it well enough.

An example of excellent music thats just boring. It just drums lots of nothingness in me and I just bounce along. I dont hate nore like it. Just a waft of music I occassionally glimpse then ignore. Good fortune is the most recognisable to me but I hear other better artists doing something similar and better. Blah.

That isn’t on this album, though, so not sure why I brought it up. This album sounds very college rock year 2000 and not sure if that is a compliment or not!! I’m not sure if that’s a criticism or not either! I just started listening to this album, okay?? I like the harmonium sounding thing in Place Called Home. I could see a world where, if I had listened to this album in the early 2000’s, I may have affection for it today. But right now, in the year 2025, it just makes me want to listen to other alt rock girlies of the 90’s/2000’s like Tori or Liz or even POE (haha) so I think it is not getting a very high rating… Thom Yorke being on this is fun, but feels a bit underused. Some of the more interesting songs musically have the worst lyrics. Nothing about it is sticking to me, save for a fact that there is a song called “Horses In My Dreams”!! That is something I will be thinking about a lot today. I don’t think I like the song, though. Sorry PJ, I know you were hoping for a higher rating from me!!

This is a fine album. The opening was the worst of the journey so far. The better songs are palatable though (one or two are good). Ultimately, this is probably a 3-star at the start of the journey, but I've skipped so many songs since I'm just so tired of rock music at this point. I was relieved to finish the album even though I didn't even hate it that much. I think it has to be 2-star for all the songs that got skipped. - Brutal opening. Whiny lyrics, uninteresting guitar. First opening song I've skipped - Not so garbage after the first song. Not really engaged with it but it's fine - Lol the best song is the one with the Radiohead lead singer

PJ Harvey sucks!

One of thousands post-punk records. One song that stood out musically was “You Said Something,” but lyrically it’s high schoolish.

Listened but kind of tuned it out as seemed too punk for my taste.

The album is ok ish, I can feel the love for New York from PJ but while it has a lot of guitars and good ideas, the only good song for me was when she included the singer of Radiohead. Also many of her songs starts right away with her singing and doesn't help to build up at all

It starts out rough with the vocals gratingly off-pitch at times. Then I'm sitting here thinking about ways in which the production team failed, which means the songwriting wasn't good enough to hold my attention. I think the final nail in the coffin is me realizing this album is from 2000 and it just seems like this sound was passé by then.

Harvey has a bit of a Patti Smith vibe here, and the album starts with a rock/punk sound but also has a couple of songs that are more folky blues. My favorite song on the album is “You Said Something.” In my option, the lyrics and instrumentals are far more sophisticated than what pop music offers today - Harvey seems to be very talented all around.

I always dread a PJ Harvey album when it pops up on my list. This one was fairly lifeless. Thom Yorke does some heavy lifting. Last two tracks are alright

Very of its time, earnest female singer/songwriter with an edge. It's no Jagged Little Pill, but a solid album. It lacks dynamics in its songwriting but a few tracks stand out to me. Specifically hustlers whoring and whores hustling. The first album I've come across on this list that I hadn't previously Listened to.

I’m scratching my head on yet another one. How is this an album that I needed to listen to. It bring nothing to the table. It’s even as if PJ lost a step with this one. Instead of venturing into the darkness, she went headfirst into the land of bubblegum and sunshine. Well, it’s more likely she had one foot in the darkness still. This isn’t what i expected to hear from her.

I’m sorry but miss PJ thought she was hitting that shit but she was not. Those high notes had me cringing and some of the repetitive lines too. I’m glad she had a good time finding herself in the city and growing tough skin but I grew enough listening to this album.

This is the first album where I was completely unfamiliar. It immediately registered as a British indie rock sound. This is not my thing so I lowered my expectations after a couple songs. In the end, I thought it was well-executed for what it was with 3 - 5 songs I enjoyed including the two featuring Thom Yorke. I would not return to this album, but it was pleasant enough.

I don’t know. I tried listening to this album many times. I know it’s very critically acclaimed, I just done jive with it. I mean stylistically it’s very close to what I like, rugged singer songwriter with distorted guitars. It’s just too unaffected, too bored, it doesn’t connect with me.

Middling for me, don't hate it don't want to particularly hear it again anytime soon. Started in a real monotone, 1 speed but got used to or picked up down the back end of the album. Don't understand why it's so liked to be fair, but guess that's the case for everything that doesn't float my boat. 2 star for the 1st half, 3 for the later - 2.5 star overall. And I hate cd hidden tracks even for bands I like it was a shit gimmick

Very bland and forgettable singer-songwriter rock. The second PJ Harvey album on the list (so far), and cuttable, in my opinion. The most memorable moment was when my computer unpaused this and Belly's Super-Connected at the same time and I thought I was listening to an extended sample, but the fact I didn't notice for a minute or particularly question it shows how little attention I was paying to the album as a whole.

Oh PJ you’re sOoOoO cool. That album cover is atrocious! I see that lady I’m walking the other direction. The Patti Smith thing is irritating when it comes from Patti, never mind PJ Harvey. I think I preferred Let England Shake.

I don’t get it. No more PJ Harvey please. I bailed on this after a few songs because A, they were bumming me out and B, we already had a very disposable album from this lady and I know enough to know now that’s she’s just not for me. Mopey and downbeat music has a time and place, but her songs just don’t feel sharp enough yo justify the indulgence. I’ve got problems of my own, PJ.

This was another of those albums where the “Must Hear” part seems extremely exaggerated. This album was okay at best. There are more interesting albums that could be on this list over an entirely forgettable soft rock album. I’ll be lucky if I remember this album in a year.

Consistent but a bit boring

Influenced by the other reviews, I have tried very hard to like this. Nope. Grinding, nothing catchy....

I wasn't feeling this. It felt incredibly repetitive at times, and I couldn't appreciate the vocal work for the most part. Not a terrible experience, but not one I'd reach for again. 'We Float' was good though.

Weak Pretenders facsimile.

Have never heard music by this artist before. Neither here nor there for me. Can understand the impact the album would have had at the time of release, especially from a female soloist, however not rushing back to listen to any of this again. I do like the collabs with Thom Yorke but I think that’s due to me liking him so much.

I tried to get into this when it came out and it never really clicked for me. Listening to it again, I feel the same way. I have no problem with PJ Harvey but she just doesn’t click with me for whatever reason.

The most annoying women I know living in Brooklyn like PJ Harvey – women who say they’re, quote, “so goddamn old,” even though they’re 33; women who talk about their relationship with their mother after ordering (read: not yet drinking) a martini at the Company Happy Hour; women who date men 20 years their senior but don’t want to date men with children, so they either date alt-right men who live in Bushwick, or men who work at Morgan Stanley with a rent controlled apartment in the East Village. I think the younger/more chronically online call these women “femcels,” but I just find them boring. None of this has shit to do with PJ Harvey, who I never listened to because I always found the women who told me to listen to her annoying, and because I want my music to have a bit more ✨cunt✨ (girlypop) and less 👹cunt👹 (misandrist). But I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by anything I hear on Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. I would describe this album as “raw.” To a lot of people, that would be a compliment. It’s very lyric-forward, with respect and adoration for an overdriven Fender Jaguar and one-take vocals. When a full band is deployed, the rhythm section is placed in the back, almost as an afterthought. It is dense, and Harvey is painfully honest yet poetically obtuse. I get the appeal, but it’s not my vibe. Maybe I came across it too late in my life, maybe I’m too much of a bimbo, but much like her predecessor Patti Smith, everything here feels too purposefully composed to be honest, and that strips it of any potential power it could’ve had. That’s not to say that I’m unable to like this vibe, because I do like Liz Phair, and I do enjoy just about half of the songs on this record, despite its cynicism and low-energy. But even the best songs here never win me over, and the worst songs are very much not my vibe. The thing that ruins it for me, though, is how Stories of the City… frames New York City. It’s the way a transplant sees the city, where the grit and the toxicity and the chaos come before the community and resilience and directness. Even beneath the obtuseness-as-poetry, even when Harvey is writing a love song or a positive song, it starts from a negative space. Whether she’s singing about the city or the people in it, she’s starting from an elevated train platform looking down at her potential death, concerned about all the straw men strangers who may push her off the platform. Or, in another sense, she’s in the gutters looking down at the trash the street sweepers haven’t picked up yet, refusing to look up at the stars. Even at her most optimistic, Harvey sees the world in a way I never could, and never want to, so I simply cannot relate, or even comprehend. It’s sad that PJ Harvey is the exact artist I expected her to be, at least on this record. There’s obvious talent here – as an artist, guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist – but those talents translate to something so unfit for my tastes, and also something that I find artistically limp. I can imagine more energy and more directness, both from the music and the lyrics, could make me enjoy her more, but Stories from the City… is not that record.

2000s rock meh

This album is like a cup of coffee to me. I am not a coffee drinker at all, but I absolutely love the smell of it. Every now and then, I'll get a cup of coffee because "who knows, maybe I'll like it this time", and on paper, I should. I get the fresh cup, love how amazing it smells, and when I drink it, it's such a letdown and I don't enjoy it at all, despite that I really think I will this time. This album to me feels like that. I love the guitar and general playing, awesome vocals, almost grimey aesthetic, all of it on paper should be a home-run for me. But I went through the whole album and I just didn't enjoy it. Which is such a shame because I could feel myself trying to enjoy it, but it just wasn't clicking.

Never heard of PJ Harvey before, it's pretty punky, she has the same kind of delivery as a lot of those 70s and 80s punk bands, which I'm not a super huge fan of. Yeah as this album goes on her vocal delivery gets a little grating to my ears. Overall definitely not a fan of this one.

Boring

PJ Harvey’s Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea presents a challenging listening experience. Her shouty vocals often overwhelm the music, creating a cacophonous atmosphere that makes it hard to appreciate both the lyrics and the instrumentation. Unfortunately, the music itself doesn’t offer much to elevate the album, feeling unremarkable and forgettable. I find her voice works better on the more subdued tracks, where it can shine without the need for constant intensity. In its current form, the album drifts by, requiring a significant effort to stay engaged. The frequent yelping can be grating, detracting from what could have been a more cohesive experience. “A Place Called Home” stands out as a decent track, but overall, this album earns a disappointing 2/5—mostly boosted by Thom Yorke’s contributions.

Reminded me of romantic comedies and movies from the early 2000s where these songs were probably featured

Didn’t really grab me I’m afraid

It was good for what it is, not exactly what I expected. I think I'd have to listen to it again to find the finer points of the album. There are some highlights that I picked up right away such as sounds and interesting harmonic choices that led to the aesthetic that they were going for. The songs left a bit to be desired though.

This album isn't doing it for me. Every song sounds kind of the same, and I feel like musically it's been very bland. Her voice is also not my favorite, so it's missing in a lot of ways. I'm enjoying Beautiful Feeling, but that may be because it's a Radiohead song. This Mess We're In is also good. It has Thom Yorke on it again. Basically every other song bored me, and I had a bit of a hard time staying engaged. It certainly wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. 4/10

This album sounds exactly like the average of every "critics loved it, but nobody bought it" of the last 30 ish years.

Very nice, chilled out music that I like. It's kind of a crowded field for this type of music for me. I feel like there are other albums out there that I like more in this style. Not bad though and I would happily listen to it if someone was playing it.

This wasn't nearly as bad as the other PJ Harvey album on this list. I still don't think I want to hear it again, but it was much less "indie experimental" than the last and a bit more rock oriented. 2.5/5

I don't like this one very much and I think it's because of the audio levels. One Line was very difficult to enjoy because the music absolutely drowned out the vocals.

Thom yorke jump scare(s)

By no means the worst album I've encountered here - but probably the biggest gap between expectation and delivery. 'This is Love' is a mighty, elemental rocker. So much else, however, feele like it's trying a bit too hard to be hip or smart and not quite getting there. And much of the music commits the cardinal sin of simply being dull. Disappointing.

Instrumentals really save this album imo, but I’m not a big fan of the lyrics. Just wasn’t into this album. I listened this on Spotify. It wasn’t jumping out at me and I just let it play in the background. Then I thought the album ended and Spotify auto played Radiohead and I was delighted. But it was just Thom Yorke on this album and that was the only thing that grabbed my attention.

What I’m about to write may sound quite anecdotal, I realize. I don’t know if it’s a blip in thinking of the record production industry, but something stands out to me about music of my formative years (1990-2010), and the proliferation of the CD and giving people the ability to skip tracks in a way they never could before. Suddenly, you didn’t NEED to have a killer track to lead off your album, so you’d tuck your bullshit shitty songs up front and the “album” became less of a front to back experience and more of a music husk to deliver whatever single the radio was playing for you. The album was now like the supermarket, milk in the back. The lead song of this album is fucking garbage and I almost stopped listening because it’s just bad, full stop. She’s painfully out of tune just rancid introduction to the rest of it. But the second track is great and so is most of the other stuff. I think nowadays, they just try to have “no shite songs” on albums but yeah, for a moment this is what happened, I’m sure of it.

I think I liked Rid Of Me, but this was disappointing. Nothing reached me until The Mess We're In. Wait, what? Radiohead? But it was just a mediocre b-side. Then after, into obscurity again.

Älskade Rid of Me så blir kul att lyssna lite mer på PJ Harvey. Slamrig första låt. Är inte riktigt min grej längre. Andra låten lugnar ner det lite och då blir det bättre. One Line är PJ som jag kan henne. Antar att jag borde älska det. Hon är kvinna och ascool men det fastnar ändå inte riktigt. Flåt PJ.

I tried for a week to get through this album. It’s just so god damned boring. Even Thom Yorke couldn’t spice this up. It’s like if you took Radiohead and Fiona Apple but took away everything that gave them any sort of passion.

sometimes you hear an album that sounds very much of it's era, that perfectly makes sense in slotting into the musical canon in that time. this is one of those albums. some catchy stuff but overall not my favorite of the 90's/00's sound. some pretty good songs on it thought.

think i would prefer her earlier grungey albums. every now and then her voice goes raspy and i expect hole-esque grunge but the energy isnt there to match.

Wasn’t really feeling this one. Songs never seemed to go anywhere. Was ok.

Alas, no story from either the city or the sea pulled enough at the cockles of my heart to offer a "Wow" moment. PJ Harvey is of course to be respected as a musician and songwriter but her style is just not for me.

My favorite songs were You said something and The mess we're in. I liked the chiller songs that have less rock influences but I feel like the album as a whole was pretty generic. Not terrible to listen to but not something I really enjoyed. 2 stars

I've never listened to PJ Harvey but I know of them. I'm pretty sure they are more an attitude/performance type of artist vs just a band/singer. I had heard Good Fortune before for sure, not sure about anything else on this album. Some of the songs and vibe weren't quiet or mellow but they felt so much like background music I was kind of drifting listening to it. Not especially my jam.

It’s objectively great. Musically it is haunting and I can see into the artists mind. Its fantastic in songwriting, that being said, it is absolutely not my style but thats ok with me. I like much more aggressive sounds, alt rock just isnt my genre.

This album is a mixed bag. The compositions are good on paper, but usually feel like they're missing something. It often feels like songs are unfinished, or at the very least that PJ Harvey is holding back. The mixes often feature great tones, but just as often there will be weird decisions. Overall, it's a boring listen, but inoffensive.

PJ Harvey makes music for an audience I don't think I will ever be able to understand, the best tracks on this album are... - One Line - Beautiful Feeling - This Mess We're In As someone who loves indie music really sad I didn't resonate with this album, although if Thom Yorke and PJ Harvey made an album together, I would be explore more. Large parts of this album feel like a cheap country album and the best parts are Thom Yorke.

Not a bad indie Rock album from PJ, considering what her previous albums were like, because they werent good. But I found there wasn't one track that made me say, yeah that was good. The duets with Thom Yorke were extremely painful to listen to, awful in fact, i think hell will freeze over before i ever listen to those again. If she was playing at a festival gig on one of the stages... you might stop an listen for a while, but you'd very soon slide on to find something better, which I don't think would be too difficult. She does seem to have a good fan base that promote rave reviews for her... but this one's not for me.

Pretty uneventful and forgetable, there were a couple of points where songs were going at 6/4 which added a bit of difference but they were pretty much just flashes in a sea of dull.

Hmm. Well, I kinda liked “This Mess We’re In” with Thom Yorke. He was a welcome parachute when I was rapidly falling from the previous tracks on this record. Maybe he lost a bet and had to record with PJ? Maybe a triple dog dare gone bad? Her voice is a bit grating, kinda like a modern Yoko screaming softly, but I’m sure that’s what her fans like because it’s harsh and raw and true and authentic bla bla bla cue ‘artistic expression’ as we all sit back with amazement listening to her genius. Not sure why this made the 1000 tbh.

I’m not sure I really get it with PJ. On first listen I feel like the best tracks were not much more than Patti Smith covers and the rest was fairly dull
