Reviews (page 11 of 13)
How does she have several albums on this list? There's just nothing essential about any of this. Clumsy lyrics, extremely generic music, very limited vocals. This time we get an atrocious collaboration with the Radiohead guy. Bleh.
Ik snapte dit niet denk ik.
The Good: Who doesn’t like stories? The Bad: What if we don’t like The City, or The Sea? The Ugly: The looming uncertainty if I have more PJ Harvey albums to listen to… We all have tastes that might not mesh with what the rest of humanity likes. I, for one, like to get really drunk every now and again, while my wife hates that, and she, for some odd reason, likes to clean the house constantly, while I hate that… Ying Yang some might call that. In the case of Mr D’s taste in certain artists, I don’t know if we can talk about Ying Yang… more like “just kick me in the nuts and let’s get it over with”. I’ve mentioned it several times before, one of these days I might just have to purchase the damn book so I can read the reasonings behind the, at times, nightmare I have to go through while listening to album #x of artist Y. This album started off okay… but then this singing thing was being repeated several times… and my finger started itching, and I was forced to hit next over and over again. According to my wife I am turning into a grumpy old man… maybe… at least I know who’s to be blamed… fucking Dimery. 2*
A bit of a mixed bag, but no real standouts
I get the appeal but was not for me
Couldn’t even finish it, sorry PJ
FOUR PJ Harvey on here, seriously? It's alright until she starts singing 😏
No. I'm sorry. The man who wrote this list obviously loves pj harvey. I don't blame you guy, if I was writing this list of course I'd put all my favourite albums. And haven't bothered to do that so I can't really complain.
- i've listened to 8 songs and i'm not sure i like this album -This mess we're in is not too bad but only bcs there's thom yorke - her singing melody never changes and it's just too bland for me + she loves to shout in the high nots (not enjoyable) - 2/10
I’m sure she is a wonderful person.
I really want to like PJ Harvey but it just doesn’t DO IT FOR ME
This is the second of her albums I have had in just a couple of months. The Thom Yorke song was good because it sounded like Radiohead This Is Love was tough to get through. I'm not finding too much to like here, and honestly, I'm looking forward to the end ⭐⭐.49
It's not that every song sounds exactly the same, albeit many of them do, it's that every song just isn't very good. PJ's voice can generously be described as "soulful", less well-meaning listeners would call it "willing but not able". It's just a rather boring but not horrible album.
Good at what she does and this album showcased her talent well.
I think 2 good songs - This is Love and You Said Something, rest kind of boring to me although I'm sure the lyrics are impressive
Idk why this is on this list. It’s not crazy good and it’s kinda just eh. 2 stars
Moments of sparkling greatness like the opening track, but buried under just too many songs that sound like filler, meandering about and going nowhere. I understand that the album is supposed to be about New York, but too much of the lyrical matter sounds like the romanticizations of a newcomer from the suburbs.
Whiner than a vineyard tour
This didnt really hit for me. Some good tracks and beats, but overall it sounded older than it is. A couple tracks I was suprised I already knew like the This is Love song.
we'll float, it's a good listen
Bueno
Entiendo el momento en que salió, pero ya a hoy me aburrió.
I can't enjoy it. It's like noise to me and her voice is aggravating.
It's just a little meh.
Soft, slow, and wimpy. Not the way I like my 90s rock
Just your average 00s pop-rock album—I don't have much to say about it, and I don't really like it much either.
boring ass new wave shit plus some fun
het begon allemaal zeer goed.. toen trok Tom Fucking Yorke zijn bakkes open en was alles om zeep, zeker toen PJ zelf de zeurderige zaag begon te spelen... waarom PJ waarom?
Not bad, not wow.
179/1001 First listen. No part of stuck out in my mind as any better than the rest. I’d like to know why I needed to listen to this. 4/10
What exactly is alternative here? This is female fronted pop-rock, there's not much else going on. It doesn't feel different, it feels standard for the 2000s. It's incredible how a little bit of Thom Yorke makes it feel slower, more odd, but that's just the eeriness of his voice. As a first time listener for PJ I'm not super impressed, but I don't hate it. 2.2/5
No pude terminar de escucharlo, pero no porque fuera malo sino por cuestión tiempo.
"É só isso?" - Zoio, Everson
This album is so 2000s. I'm just not sure if I'm a fan of PJ Harvey's style, I'm not huge on her voice and the songs didn't really hit for me. There were a few Thom Yorke collabs which also dated this album to 2000. For me, it's just okay.
Today’s album was a collection of songs, each of which were a collection of notes, words, and rhythmic components. It lasted approximately 47 minutes. While better than some albums, it was worse than others. It featured instruments, including the guitar, bass guitar, drums, and voice. That’s all I really have to say. Perhaps significantly more active listening would be important. But it was quite uninteresting to me, so it became background music almost instantly. 4/10.
Early 2000s alt style, kinda comparable to Stereophonics but not quite. Not my style but can see why people like it.
On a few tracks I was could hear Siouxie Sue crossed with Chrissie Hind, a combination that would normally have me rushing to put the album on repeat, however, it didn't grab me. One or two tracks were great, but that wasn't enough to make me reach for more.

Es un álbum para NPCs deprimidos
Review - my second PJ Harvey album. No where near as good as Let England Shake. The guitars are sort of droney in the first few songs particularly, a bit like Stereolab but less interesting. There are some songs where she goes for repeated high notes and her voice just isn't quite there. That said, she's obviously a good songwriter and some of the songs here are really good and well performed; more are really good and midly performed. An ok album. Rating - 5/10 Need to hear? YES
Didn't really grab me, a few average songs and the rest just passed me by.
None of the songs really engaged me. The highlight was the track featuring Thom Yorke. Otherwise the songs kind of blurred together.
So far suicidal lol. Pretty basic in terms of instrumentals but the singer sounds familiar in a good way. I like the mellow track with no drums but it’s so far picking up after the middle of the album. not good but not bad, probably wouldnt listen to it again.
I wasn’t into this one :( I feel like the instrumentals were too repetitive for the first half. As if it was building up to a climax that never came. I don’t know if it’s just my shitty zoomer attention span or not. As soon as “Whores Hustle” started I literally said out loud “THERE WE GO.” Because I feel like that suits her voice better! MASSIVE props to her guitar work though. I just wish her vocal style gelled with better instrumental build-ups. I’m definitely willing to give her more chances in the future, just not for this album. Favorite track: The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore
Not my vibe, but I can see whey it made the list.
It’s okay, solid singing and instrumentation. Just not really my cup of tea.
I felt very indifferent about this album. None of the songs particularly appealed to me or moved me.
I've always been aware of PJ Harvey but don't think I'd ever heard any of her songs. This album was ok..nothing Id revisit. I feel like if I was an angsty teenager or early 20s trying to find my way in the world I'd probably like this more.
It was ok. I don't like one note songs
I know some punk fans love her, but I find it redundant.
genérico
meh
You know it's not my album when Thom Yorke's feature is a breathe of fresh air. Just not my style of singer-songwriter, going to chalk this one up as "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all".
Meh
Ngl i couldnt make it far into this one, not for me. From what I heard it was ok.
Contaba con que fuera un poco más duro pero es un rock mucho más tranquilo, seguramente sea un álbum al que vuelva en el futuro y me acabe gustando
a bit like nails on a chalkboard
Eh, some interesting songs here but not my cup of tea. A little bit of Radiohead especially when they invited Thom Yorke on “this mess we’re in” Fave songs: this mess we’re in and Kamikaze
Interesting but not my cup of tea.
I do understand that the idea is to create melancholic and atmospheric sounds. However, I cannot ignore how the singer often sounds downright bored to be in the studio. And when there is a guest singer, the text quality becomes so abysmal that I had trouble not to burst out laughing (This Mess We're In being the worst offender). Best songs are Kamikaze and We Float, mostly because they sounds like something the artist actually wanted to make. At least it goes to show that anyone can make dull, boring sounding sad music. 3/10, please drink some coffee next time.
i like the song with thom york, rest is meh ok
Not for me
Sounds like a shittier version of alanis morissette. It's good, but I don't know why it's on this list
Pretty decent. A bit unmemorable.
"We Float" carried this album.
Meh
Moins convaincu que le premier album. 2.5/5
Not that bad but I don't like PJ Harvey
Instrumental interesting, don't know if I like vocals. 2!
Decent little album
A solid album for PJ. It shows both the grit and the songwriting chops that make her great. However I’m not a fan of the way the guitars are produced. A little too slick to handle the bigger guitar parts that anchor some of the songs. It it is effective on some of the songs which bear more production weight like A Place Called Home and Beautiful Feeling but less so with material like the opening track.
My reviews often talk of angry young men making recordings, well this is a breath of fresh air from an angry young woman making a recording. As I am no longer young a lot of this music isn't for me.
This album was the hardest decision yet. It was very middle of the road, I think its just music that's not for me. She sounds good and there's nothing wrong with the music, I just can't get into it.
- It’s giving 2000’s emo - Hendes måde er synge på er ikke min smag, og musikken siger mig ikke forfærdeligt meget, det er 100% et mig problem, for hun er tydeligt dygtig, det rammer mig bare ikke
Generic album nothing really stood out to me.
Pj who? 1.5 stars
i already knew « this mess we’re in » that i liked but the rest not for me
i feel like shes so cool but i cant like her songs
i don’t think that’s for me
Call me old-fashioned but I like songs to have a melody.
Not my jam
meh. best one was the mess we’re in
2/3. Moody, dark, she definitely listened to a lot of Nirvana. I really like the dark guitar sound, but other than that it didn’t move me much. Lot of tracks bled together and the album just isn’t very dynamic.
taka pheobe buffay nie moj styl bez szalu
Sounds like the 90s.
Meh.
A bit better than previous one but still to calm for me. Would be cool for some late night driving
Favourite song- you said something, this wicked tongue, and this is love Enjoyed the album and nice to hear someone I hadn’t listened to before
Not for me - We Float or The Mess We’re In were maybe my fav but didn’t really love any that much
Nothing for me to write home about personally but not offensive
3/10
2.5
Nothing here really did it for me. Not particularly memorable either. Don't see myself revisiting this one.
Definitely not the worst thing I’ve ever heard just it feels incomplete.
I don’t understand why this is an album I need to listen to before I die. I’d have been fine without it.
Just not for me. Musically, it hits a good note, but simply not good enough to carry an album
Didn't do much for me, but man what a surprise when Thom Yorke just pops in outta nowhere
I guess what makes PJ Harvey is her voice. The music is ok but by itself it just sounds like okaysh rock, not that special. I wonder if this is a record I would’ve enjoyed more back in 2000.
This Mess We’re In — with Thom Yorke— pretty cool. Otherwise, not that into the album. Her voice isn’t for me.
I always thought she was overrated
it’s neither bad nor insanely good. the songs all sounded so similar so i don’t even know if i really have a fave
🥇you said something 🥈the mess we’re in 🥉the whores hustle and the hustlers whore HM: a place called home, we float
No m'ha desagradat. Averages.
Not my vibe
This was not for me
Another good case for singles / best of being preferable to some albums. This Is Love is an outstanding track in a sea of fairly dirgy fillers. Maybe I wasn't in the mood or i'm just not cool enough for it all but i'm not sure i'll be giving it another listen.
It was ok, nothing special
I dont understand the UK obsession with PJ Harvey.
My algorithm keeps trying to get me to listen to PJ Harvey, maybe because Thom Yorke is in this. Meh, not for me at all. She's fine, but I'm bored. 2* Highlights: the mess we're in
Thom yorke is here 👀
It wasn't bad but didn't click with me.
Muniin puhalteluksi jäi tämäkin, ehkä voisi toimia nukahtamismusiikkina.
This was fine. Some cool driving beats. I enjoyed the radiohead cameo, overall not for me
not for me
No
Just very generic and kind of annoying
I was just about to give up on this album, but This Is Love was decent. I'm rating it 2, even though it's more like a 2.5.
Is this what old people had before Allanis?
meh 2/5
It was ok. Forgettable and deleted it after
I really want to like PJ Harvey. So many people I know love her but it always is just kind of ok to me. It just doesn't grab me.
Never was able to buy into her vocal performance. It felt jarring all the way until We Float. I liked her there. Some nice instrumentals but this is just not for me at all. Global reviews have me feeling a little left out but thats the beauty of art, right?
4.5
Really not my cup of tea.
2.5 I got Dry by PJ Harvey about 20 albums back and gave her a 3 (rounding up) so I figured a 2 rounding down was fair. Dry she was angry and powerful and I really see why some people may have that album in their top 20 (not me but. . . ) This album was more contained but also more boring. A plus is her vocals have improved. She's got a powerful voice and is an amazing songwriter but I just can't get into her stuff. Same comment as Dry I think with time I'd come to like her stuff more but I don't have that kind of time.
La pochette me parle mais jamais ecouté pourtant Bon bah… c’est du rock classique des années 2000. Ça m’a fait ni chaud ni froid…
A little sleepy for me
Kinda boring. Definitely of its time. A couple good tracks but overall not really my cup of tea. Added to library: Big Exit
Really medium album. Unfortunately for this list, medium has become not quite good enough.
Favorite tracks: This Is Love, The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore Overall, not impressed with this album. There were two tracks I would maybe revisit, but even those didn't wow me. It felt a bit like she was trying to be edgy, but never quite got there for me.
WTF. I am sure this person has fans but definitely not for me.
Barely listened
This is ok for what it is, but there is nothing remarkable here. Well made and well produced, just not very interesting.
I forgot to take notes while listening and I don’t remember anything about it. I know I didn’t like it.
Probably much better in its time, but I found it pretty unremarkable overall, felt like music that would be playing at a JC Penney. The one Thom Yorke track was somewhat interesting, but I think just because it was a new vocal rather than actually liking the song. Feels like a 2.5.
Mehhhhh not really for me.
Boring, plain, not interesting at all.
Thought I would like this more than I did. It had a few good songs but ultimately lost my attention- a lot of songs that were both gritty and boring for me. Overall- not bad but not my favorite. 2.5/5, not quite a 3
I like her voice, but the songs are just so dull and samey, no real hooks or anything to make me pay attention. The only song I liked was the one with Thom Yorke. Fav track (already in library) - This Mess We're In
I mean I put it on but nothing really jumped out. Retail store music. Non offensive (other than some spicy lyrics) but not exciting. Would give 2.5 if I could.
I don't know what it is that other people hear in this music that I'm not hearing. To each their own I suppose.
I really did not like this. I don’t like her voice or her lyrics.
W końcu kobiecy głos ale to tyle
Wow honestly didn’t know PJ Harvey was a woman. Maybe thought they were off PJ & Duncan? Awful music, moany & a Radiohead collab 👎🏼
Wish I had the words to describe why this album felt grating and slow to me, because I think i enjoyed the other PJ Harvey album we've gotten during this project. Everything felt kind of quiet and plodding.
Not my vibe
Ambient, moody guitar riffs that are kinda cool. Some of the vocals strike me as out of tune or grating. Hard to understand the lyrics
Apparently I am supposed to like this….
Some dirgier parts were a little tough to sit through but especially at the start were some solid pop rock.
Didn't get much out of this. The last song was nice. Also there's 2 Thom Yorke features and one the first one, he just sort of moans and wails for a bit ovwr the track. Made me giggle when I realized that was going to be the extent of his contribution.
Boring. Sounded like every other mildly successful female artist in the 90s (I'm not talking about queens like Mariah and Whitney). I had never heard of her before and will happily go back to never listening to her again.
Saw her open for U2 and couldn't wait for her set to end. She sounds like someone yelling at you with a bullhorn. Decent # of listens for the entire album. Not sure why. 25M for "Good Fortune" which is annoying as fuck. 69M for "This Mess We're In". 24M for "This Is Love". I had no idea she had a following, she has no music on the radio outside of "Down By The Water". This was my era, I just didn't connect with her sound, and it's not a good thing to revisit 25 yrs later. 2.5 stars for not being awful and for including Thom Yorke on a few tracks.
This is so fucking boring
Pretty avant-rock. Structures are different, but overall a pleasant tone. Harmonies and progressions are pretty unique and cool throughout each track. But it takes a certain mood and attention to get the most from these tracks. Thom Yorke is a surprise on “The Mess We’re In.” This album does sound very much like a more guitar-and-acoustic-instrument-oriented Radiohead record. Maybe a little less experimental than that, but similar vibes. Some weird choices in production where vocal peaks are staticky. Sounds like when a vinyl is cut too hot. Not for me and rather annoying to me. I appreciate some of this record (especially on the front half or so), but overall, I’m not sure if it’s for me. 4.5-5/10 Standout(s):
didnt really pay much attention while listening to this one, played only in the background while cleaning my room. it had a good vibe overall, it gave the y2k movies soundtrack feeling. but it isnt really anything i would come back to, no special melody that would stay in my head.
quite boring and uninspiring. Listened to the whole album and can't remember a single thing about it.
Good singing but I don't care about this type of music.
I listen to a good chunk of these albums with my wife while we enjoy some fresh air in the evenings on the balcony. I'd normally share my review, but I thought some of what she said was dead on, so I'm going to incorporate it. She isn't doing anything new that the female vocalists of the 70s haven't already done. I think you'd need to be on heroin to enjoy this properly.
Maudlin and bleak Not my thing
what can i say, pretty boring lol
Two chords songs are easy to write. Good two chord songs are incredibly hard to write. PJ is proof
Not a vibe. The only song I liked what this mess we're in. Kinda bored.
Feels like the music was made separately from the vocalist. It sounds like music made to be popular with less individualism.
Felt a little generic and bland. Did not stand out as an amazing alt rock from the early 2000s, unsure why on the list. Not bad, not good, feels a little like an industry plant.
Not great, nineties coffee house music. A lot of these albums have been really dull recently. What’s going on? Don’t you expect the greatest albums to be made by virtuoso musicians and not singer-songwriters? I understand that these albums are well-liked, but do they sound like the greatest records ever?
not for me
Critical darling of the 90's! Not sure why.
Bit boring
klang irgendwie alles gleich in meinem Ohr
maybe he should’ve stuck with 500 albums because this feels like something you’d add to meet a quota
Meh
Meh me gustó más el primero pero del mismo tipo, este no le he escuchado casi nada
Drones ad repetitive…. Not for me
It had some interesting moments but not enough to save it.
Love the voice, and in many tracks it's actually far, far stronger than the instrumental part. I was unfamiliar and it was good to give a listen. It didn't move me or catch me, but I liked it well enough.
Didn’t resonate.
I knew I preferred her later stuff (including this album), but I guess I didn’t realize I’m really not a fan. Maybe someday.
Ok. Not my fave notwithstanding it’s 90/noughties grungy alternative
Standouts Big Exit This is Love
An example of excellent music thats just boring. It just drums lots of nothingness in me and I just bounce along. I dont hate nore like it. Just a waft of music I occassionally glimpse then ignore. Good fortune is the most recognisable to me but I hear other better artists doing something similar and better. Blah.
2,5
flojete flojete, poco unificados los tracks
Fine. But nothing jumped out at me.
I have tried to like her a few times over the years...but I don't. Maybe you like either PJ or Liz Phair? I'm definitley in the Liz Phair camp. Harvey's music is boring and well...just boring.
Chilled music, probably strong lyrics but songs were not that catchy
Meh, it was fine. Just not my thing.
Turned off after 2 songs. Not needed and undeserving of this list. 3.5/10 (1.75/5)
Not interested - I don't like PJ Harvey's music.
It's an ok alt rock / singer songwriter album but a bit too dull and depressing for me. I like that she played so many of the instrumental parts though.
Yuck
PJ Harvey okay. College rock okay. Oh wow a Thom Yorke feature, okay. You know what PJ Harvey song I heard recently that is really good? Down By The Water. That isn’t on this album, though, so not sure why I brought it up. This album sounds very college rock year 2000 and not sure if that is a compliment or not!! I’m not sure if that’s a criticism or not either! I just started listening to this album, okay?? Good Fortune > A Place Called Home > Big Exit > You Said Something > The Mess We’re In > We Float > One Line > Beautiful Feeling > This Is Love > Horses In My Dreams > The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore > Kamikaze The song Good Fortune is pretty good. “Like a modern day Bonnie and Clyde.” Oh? I feel like I’ve heard that line somewhere else. Oh, it’s the title of a Travis Tritt song that also came out in the year 2000 hahaha that’s really funny. I like the harmonium sounding thing in Place Called Home. I could see a world where, if I had listened to this album in the early 2000’s, I may have affection for it today. But right now, in the year 2025, it just makes me want to listen to other alt rock girlies of the 90’s/2000’s like Tori or Liz or even POE (haha) so I think it is not getting a very high rating… Thom Yorke being on this is fun, but feels a bit underused. Some of the more interesting songs musically have the worst lyrics. Nothing about it is sticking to me, save for a fact that there is a song called “Horses In My Dreams”!! That is something I will be thinking about a lot today. I don’t think I like the song, though. Sorry PJ, I know you were hoping for a higher rating from me!!
This is a fine album. The opening was the worst of the journey so far. The better songs are palatable though (one or two are good). Ultimately, this is probably a 3-star at the start of the journey, but I've skipped so many songs since I'm just so tired of rock music at this point. I was relieved to finish the album even though I didn't even hate it that much. I think it has to be 2-star for all the songs that got skipped. - Brutal opening. Whiny lyrics, uninteresting guitar. First opening song I've skipped - Not so garbage after the first song. Not really engaged with it but it's fine - Lol the best song is the one with the Radiohead lead singer
PJ Harvey sucks!
One of thousands post-punk records. One song that stood out musically was “You Said Something,” but lyrically it’s high schoolish.
sorry PeeJay didnt like this one
Listened but kind of tuned it out as seemed too punk for my taste.
The album is ok ish, I can feel the love for New York from PJ but while it has a lot of guitars and good ideas, the only good song for me was when she included the singer of Radiohead. Also many of her songs starts right away with her singing and doesn't help to build up at all
It starts out rough with the vocals gratingly off-pitch at times. Then I'm sitting here thinking about ways in which the production team failed, which means the songwriting wasn't good enough to hold my attention. I think the final nail in the coffin is me realizing this album is from 2000 and it just seems like this sound was passé by then.
Harvey has a bit of a Patti Smith vibe here, and the album starts with a rock/punk sound but also has a couple of songs that are more folky blues. My favorite song on the album is “You Said Something.” In my option, the lyrics and instrumentals are far more sophisticated than what pop music offers today - Harvey seems to be very talented all around.
Not for me. But Thom Yorke so +1
I always dread a PJ Harvey album when it pops up on my list. This one was fairly lifeless. Thom Yorke does some heavy lifting. Last two tracks are alright
Very of its time, earnest female singer/songwriter with an edge. It's no Jagged Little Pill, but a solid album. It lacks dynamics in its songwriting but a few tracks stand out to me. Specifically hustlers whoring and whores hustling. The first album I've come across on this list that I hadn't previously Listened to.
niet mijn ding
Not my cup of tea. Boring.
Not for me but unique and well produced.
Some lovely bits but otherwise meandering.
Langweilig, typisch Indie
Started to pick up halfway through. Not a big fan of pj.
No lo repetiría
Just didn’t get on with this. Safe, boring album
I don't know why anyone would listen to a full album of PJ Harvey when Kate Bush, Patti Smith, and Joni Mitchell did what she does much earlier, and much better. Still, there are good individual tracks to be found, but this album isn't great as a whole. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing
I’m scratching my head on yet another one. How is this an album that I needed to listen to. It bring nothing to the table. It’s even as if PJ lost a step with this one. Instead of venturing into the darkness, she went headfirst into the land of bubblegum and sunshine. Well, it’s more likely she had one foot in the darkness still. This isn’t what i expected to hear from her.
Meh
Just ok. Pretty forgettable. 🤷🏻♂️
Recontra medio pelo, tranqui, medio folk-pop. Tiene 2 temas con Tom Yorke, uno bueno, pero no deja tanto.
I’m sorry but miss PJ thought she was hitting that shit but she was not. Those high notes had me cringing and some of the repetitive lines too. I’m glad she had a good time finding herself in the city and growing tough skin but I grew enough listening to this album.
This is the first album where I was completely unfamiliar. It immediately registered as a British indie rock sound. This is not my thing so I lowered my expectations after a couple songs. In the end, I thought it was well-executed for what it was with 3 - 5 songs I enjoyed including the two featuring Thom Yorke. I would not return to this album, but it was pleasant enough.
[4/10] Just sounds like off-the-shelf rock n roll most of the time
The shores hustle and the hustlers whore ist vielleicht ganz okay
I don’t know. I tried listening to this album many times. I know it’s very critically acclaimed, I just done jive with it. I mean stylistically it’s very close to what I like, rugged singer songwriter with distorted guitars. It’s just too unaffected, too bored, it doesn’t connect with me.
Generic....
It's OK. The Thom Yorke song was good .
Middling for me, don't hate it don't want to particularly hear it again anytime soon. Started in a real monotone, 1 speed but got used to or picked up down the back end of the album. Don't understand why it's so liked to be fair, but guess that's the case for everything that doesn't float my boat. 2 star for the 1st half, 3 for the later - 2.5 star overall. And I hate cd hidden tracks even for bands I like it was a shit gimmick
Very bland and forgettable singer-songwriter rock. The second PJ Harvey album on the list (so far), and cuttable, in my opinion. The most memorable moment was when my computer unpaused this and Belly's Super-Connected at the same time and I thought I was listening to an extended sample, but the fact I didn't notice for a minute or particularly question it shows how little attention I was paying to the album as a whole.
Het is niet slecht, maar ik voel hem gewoon niet
Boring whiny Indie Rock.
I can never quite get into PJ Harvey. Feels like something I should like, but it just doesn't do it for me.
More dull slow British rock. Eh. You Said Something was nice, and a few of the songs have nice music. But most of the album is just meh. A few of the songs are way too repetitive as well. Best song: You Said Something
mediocre, not really much else to say
hm
Sounds like a band that would open for U2 or The Cranberries or Creed. One line was cool. Mostly forgettable for me.
Oh PJ you’re sOoOoO cool. That album cover is atrocious! I see that lady I’m walking the other direction. The Patti Smith thing is irritating when it comes from Patti, never mind PJ Harvey. I think I preferred Let England Shake.
I don’t get it. No more PJ Harvey please. I bailed on this after a few songs because A, they were bumming me out and B, we already had a very disposable album from this lady and I know enough to know now that’s she’s just not for me. Mopey and downbeat music has a time and place, but her songs just don’t feel sharp enough yo justify the indulgence. I’ve got problems of my own, PJ.
not for me
Мне не зашло(
This was another of those albums where the “Must Hear” part seems extremely exaggerated. This album was okay at best. There are more interesting albums that could be on this list over an entirely forgettable soft rock album. I’ll be lucky if I remember this album in a year.
Fine, but not for me.
Consistent but a bit boring
Influenced by the other reviews, I have tried very hard to like this. Nope. Grinding, nothing catchy....
I wasn't feeling this. It felt incredibly repetitive at times, and I couldn't appreciate the vocal work for the most part. Not a terrible experience, but not one I'd reach for again. 'We Float' was good though.
Weak Pretenders facsimile.
Have never heard music by this artist before. Neither here nor there for me. Can understand the impact the album would have had at the time of release, especially from a female soloist, however not rushing back to listen to any of this again. I do like the collabs with Thom Yorke but I think that’s due to me liking him so much.
I tried to get into this when it came out and it never really clicked for me. Listening to it again, I feel the same way. I have no problem with PJ Harvey but she just doesn’t click with me for whatever reason.
The most annoying women I know living in Brooklyn like PJ Harvey – women who say they’re, quote, “so goddamn old,” even though they’re 33; women who talk about their relationship with their mother after ordering (read: not yet drinking) a martini at the Company Happy Hour; women who date men 20 years their senior but don’t want to date men with children, so they either date alt-right men who live in Bushwick, or men who work at Morgan Stanley with a rent controlled apartment in the East Village. I think the younger/more chronically online call these women “femcels,” but I just find them boring. None of this has shit to do with PJ Harvey, who I never listened to because I always found the women who told me to listen to her annoying, and because I want my music to have a bit more ✨cunt✨ (girlypop) and less 👹cunt👹 (misandrist). But I can’t say I’m particularly surprised by anything I hear on Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea. I would describe this album as “raw.” To a lot of people, that would be a compliment. It’s very lyric-forward, with respect and adoration for an overdriven Fender Jaguar and one-take vocals. When a full band is deployed, the rhythm section is placed in the back, almost as an afterthought. It is dense, and Harvey is painfully honest yet poetically obtuse. I get the appeal, but it’s not my vibe. Maybe I came across it too late in my life, maybe I’m too much of a bimbo, but much like her predecessor Patti Smith, everything here feels too purposefully composed to be honest, and that strips it of any potential power it could’ve had. That’s not to say that I’m unable to like this vibe, because I do like Liz Phair, and I do enjoy just about half of the songs on this record, despite its cynicism and low-energy. But even the best songs here never win me over, and the worst songs are very much not my vibe. The thing that ruins it for me, though, is how Stories of the City… frames New York City. It’s the way a transplant sees the city, where the grit and the toxicity and the chaos come before the community and resilience and directness. Even beneath the obtuseness-as-poetry, even when Harvey is writing a love song or a positive song, it starts from a negative space. Whether she’s singing about the city or the people in it, she’s starting from an elevated train platform looking down at her potential death, concerned about all the straw men strangers who may push her off the platform. Or, in another sense, she’s in the gutters looking down at the trash the street sweepers haven’t picked up yet, refusing to look up at the stars. Even at her most optimistic, Harvey sees the world in a way I never could, and never want to, so I simply cannot relate, or even comprehend. It’s sad that PJ Harvey is the exact artist I expected her to be, at least on this record. There’s obvious talent here – as an artist, guitarist, vocalist, and lyricist – but those talents translate to something so unfit for my tastes, and also something that I find artistically limp. I can imagine more energy and more directness, both from the music and the lyrics, could make me enjoy her more, but Stories from the City… is not that record.
2000s rock meh
This album is like a cup of coffee to me. I am not a coffee drinker at all, but I absolutely love the smell of it. Every now and then, I'll get a cup of coffee because "who knows, maybe I'll like it this time", and on paper, I should. I get the fresh cup, love how amazing it smells, and when I drink it, it's such a letdown and I don't enjoy it at all, despite that I really think I will this time. This album to me feels like that. I love the guitar and general playing, awesome vocals, almost grimey aesthetic, all of it on paper should be a home-run for me. But I went through the whole album and I just didn't enjoy it. Which is such a shame because I could feel myself trying to enjoy it, but it just wasn't clicking.
Don't love it. It's a little achy breaky for me.
Never heard of PJ Harvey before, it's pretty punky, she has the same kind of delivery as a lot of those 70s and 80s punk bands, which I'm not a super huge fan of. Yeah as this album goes on her vocal delivery gets a little grating to my ears. Overall definitely not a fan of this one.
The shores hustle and the hustlers whore ist vielleicht ganz okay
This one was better than her last one but still not good
Boring
PJ Harvey’s Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea presents a challenging listening experience. Her shouty vocals often overwhelm the music, creating a cacophonous atmosphere that makes it hard to appreciate both the lyrics and the instrumentation. Unfortunately, the music itself doesn’t offer much to elevate the album, feeling unremarkable and forgettable. I find her voice works better on the more subdued tracks, where it can shine without the need for constant intensity. In its current form, the album drifts by, requiring a significant effort to stay engaged. The frequent yelping can be grating, detracting from what could have been a more cohesive experience. “A Place Called Home” stands out as a decent track, but overall, this album earns a disappointing 2/5—mostly boosted by Thom Yorke’s contributions.
Reminded me of romantic comedies and movies from the early 2000s where these songs were probably featured
fine, but boring
I want to like it but I just don’t think I’m a 90s grunge gal
Pretty good. I didn’t connect with it but I can see why some people enjoy it
naja, das erste gerhörte Album konnte mich nicht überzeugen und das zweite hier auch nicht wirklich
It’s fine and it was nice to hear Thom Yorke but this album just wasn’t for me
It’s ok. Its biggest sin is it’s kind of boring. Tracks all feel similar with an American rumbling marching rock feel. Like easy listening hard rock?
Didn’t really grab me I’m afraid
It was good for what it is, not exactly what I expected. I think I'd have to listen to it again to find the finer points of the album. There are some highlights that I picked up right away such as sounds and interesting harmonic choices that led to the aesthetic that they were going for. The songs left a bit to be desired though.
Album was okay. Nothing too interesting. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
Sth about her voice
Some warble some music
I started this album a few times but switched it off, it wasn't terrible but it did feel kind of bland. Liked a couple songs but overall I would not listen to this again. Favorite songs were: 7. This Mess We're In 10. This Is Love 4/10
kind of sucks 2/5
I just couldn’t get into this.
Not for me
This album isn't doing it for me. Every song sounds kind of the same, and I feel like musically it's been very bland. Her voice is also not my favorite, so it's missing in a lot of ways. I'm enjoying Beautiful Feeling, but that may be because it's a Radiohead song. This Mess We're In is also good. It has Thom Yorke on it again. Basically every other song bored me, and I had a bit of a hard time staying engaged. It certainly wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good. 4/10
This album sounds exactly like the average of every "critics loved it, but nobody bought it" of the last 30 ish years.
Not for me, a lot of boring songs... 2/5
Boring

Nothing in this album spoke to me, my biggest takeaway was that I'm better at recognising Thom Yorke's vocals than I thought I would be
Just not my thing.
Eh. There’s emotion sure, but it’s all so simple. I could listen to this for a track or two but a whole record… no thanks.
I tried hard to like this, and I can't put my finger on anything that I don't like. It just doesn't interest me.
I like a lot of punk/post punk, but this didn’t do it for me.
Very nice, chilled out music that I like. It's kind of a crowded field for this type of music for me. I feel like there are other albums out there that I like more in this style. Not bad though and I would happily listen to it if someone was playing it.
Nothing special here
I wasn’t massively blown away by this album
She is a good singer and I liked how she sounded quite retro but this just isn’t my style of music. Rating: 2
It's not for me
First song made me wonder why I don't listen to PJ Harvey more. All songs after made me realize why
Just on the wrong side of "generic alternative" for me. But close
Idk there were moments I like but overall but this album just didn't really stand out to me. Again, not realistically a 2 but more of a 2.5. Honestly maybe even a 3.
Big Exit - 3 Good Fortune - 2 A Place Called Home - 2 One Line - 3 Beautiful Feeling - 2 The Whores Hustle - 2 The Mess We're In - 3.5 You Said Something - 2 Kamikaze - 3, but when she says "Kamikaze", it's a 1 This is Love - 3.5 Horses in My Dreams - 2 We Float - 2
This wasn't nearly as bad as the other PJ Harvey album on this list. I still don't think I want to hear it again, but it was much less "indie experimental" than the last and a bit more rock oriented. 2.5/5
I don't like this one very much and I think it's because of the audio levels. One Line was very difficult to enjoy because the music absolutely drowned out the vocals.
Gefällig ohne Höhepunkte
Ok.
..
Nothing really stood out to me on the first listen, so I had another go. The second listen through I enjoyed much more. First half of the album is better than the second half imo Favorite Song: Good Fortune Rating 2.7
Not my thing. Definitely felt the 90's rock influence here that didn't vibe with me.
Very samey tracks, which is what I found with her latest songs produced for a National Theatre play......heard one, heard them all!
I want to pick 2.5 stars, but I guess if I have to choose between 2 or 3, then I'll pick 2. It was okay, but nothing special for me.
My god did I not want to keep going. Musically? Fine. Interest? Nope.
I think I found these mediocre.
