Reviews (page 10 of 14)

Not my favourite Bowie album, but it’s still a Bowie album. So you know it is still good

Great album. Mick Ronson's work on guitar is great throughout. Ch-ch-ch-changes!! Life on Mars! Oh Pretty Things is good too. The album would be better without Fill Your Heart. Andy Warhol is cool. That guitar line is nifty. The Bewlay Brothers ends the album on a high note. 4.5/5

It's Bowie, so it's obviously high-quality music. However! The songs are strong individually but - as someone who knows a lot of Bowie songs but has yet to listen to a full album from front to back - it feels like this would've worked better as a record with a singular theme or a more consistent sound. It's a bit disjointed, but maybe his other albums are better in that regard. Either way, I'm looking forward to hearing more of his music here. Standout tracks are Oh! You Pretty Things and Life on Mars?

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changees! Reminds me of pretty boy Shrek and donkhorse and i love it.

i love this album. Obviously, you gotta love the classics on here, life on mars, changes, etc but I discovered some others that I'm really fond of. Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan were both so good. high 4.

Changes and Life On Mars will alway be good!

Loved. What an excellent album, start to finish.

pretty damn good wtf? knowing second-hand that Bowie is good is different than listening to the actual album, as it turns out. lyrical masterpiece, amazingly catchy instrumentals, and surprisingly consistent! loved this to bits :)

How is it possible to like as much the jazz-like "Blackstar" and these piano sounds at the same time? It does not matter the style Bowie decides to give to his music; I'll enjoy it any time. For personal taste, I'm still much more into the "Next Day" and "Blackstar" eras, but it's impossible not to note the high level of this one.

Bowie is always unique and interesting, and when the songs work they are great, but when they don't they sound ridiculous. But it's kind of cool that he puts out some complete nonsense and doesn't care. I'll never be a super fan but this album was an enjoyable listen, the guitar led stuff better than the piano ones.

Enjoyed that. Heard a lot of Bowie growing up. Highlights were changes, oh you pretty things, life on Mars and Queen bitch

Liked this much more than previous Bowie albums on the list

It's been a while since I've listened, and I like it more than I remember. I still do not think I realize how famous David Bowie was aside from his appearance in Zoolander. Favorite song is still 'Oh! You Pretty Things' though. 'Song for Bob Dylan' new to the radar. 'Life on Mars' a preview of themes to come.

One of my favs.

I thought I had listened to this recently, but I either hadn’t or had not listened to it properly. It’s awesome.

sonzao, grande mestre

A hugely impactful and iconic album that sees Bowie start with stellar opening tracks before moving toward a contemplative B-Side. The catchiness of the songs can't escape the melancholy of the lyrics, but the result is an amazing blend of music.

it was good but i was not impressed

Didn’t realize how much I knew! Love the funk and experimenting with other artist styles

I've always liked "Life On Mars?" and a lot of the songs on this album sound similar to that.

Not that bad, comparable to most of his stuff

Never listened to David Bowie before, but I really love his sound and the amount of passion in his voice Changes was good

Great but there are a few songs which stop me from really loving the album.

Ohh, you pretty things...

Amazing to see how Bowie became Bowie. But this album just seems to lack the grand sound and production of later releases. There is a bit of a disconnect between the vocal track and the instrumentals, as if something has been removed. Regardless, a respectable release in a good runtime with good lyricism and charismatic vocals.

Grear album by Bowie, maybe missing the big grandeur of his later work but maybe because of that, this album feels more down to earth and personal

Quite a satisfactory album.

Changes is a great opener, you know its a cultural touchstone when half of the track listing is still prevalent in modern media. Whimsical and grandiose. Also gave us life on mars so thats cool Best: Changes, oh you pretty things, queen bitch

I mean it's a classic for a reason. It's rare to come across something that feels plugged-in yet acoustic all the same. In fact, this may be the only mostly-acoustic glam rock album I've ever heard of. While I think that Bowie's glam peers like T. Rex still deserve just as much credit for their contributions to the industry, Hunky Dory is proof as to why the soon-to-be Ziggy Stardust is such a legend.

David, please tell me what went through your head when you wrote Andy Warhol?

Ch..ch..ch..chaaanges!

Easily my favourite Bowie album, but I'm far from a huge fan

Ziggy, this one, Earthling, Blackstar. The man is missed. This one poppier than others but very good. 4 stars only because others are even better,

This is a very good album. There are some major highlights : Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, and Life on Mars? are very very good. The first half of the album is significantly better though, and there is a couple duds on the album

David Bowie was clearly a creative genius. Eccentric, unique, cool. a true pop culture icon. I did not grow up listening to David Bowie and had never heard this album apart from Changes - and I usually skip it when it comes on... I am happy to have listened to this album today. It seemed to get better and better as the album played. Favourite song, probably Andy Warhol but Queen Bitch was fun.

Andy Warhol might be the badest song he made. That was a Jam..

Ugh I love David Bowie's voice so much. I love his weird lyrics even when I have no idea what he's talking about, and I love the way he builds a song. At some point in college Life on Mars was my favorite song of all time. I still am awed by the piano arrangement every time I listen to it, and how perfectly it works with his singing. Changes and Oh You Pretty Things are also classics. I wish I could give half stars cause this is a 4 1/2 for me. There's too many songs in the back-half that are a little underwhelming and there's other Bowie albums I like better.

several classics! Liked it much more once I paid attention to the songwriting

I loved this Album! I especially love “Changes.” A classic, but probably the best on the album. Followed closely by “Fill Your Heart” and “Oh! You Pretty Things.” I don’t know Bowie very well, so it was fun to dive into this album and get a feel for his quirky, rocky style.

I understand that if you’ve missed out on certain touchstones by a certain age that they won’t sound as appealing when you get to them later at life. Like how someone from the site recently tried to spin Joy Division and didn’t see the appeal compared to the many acts who emulated their sound. But I can’t imagine not being impressed with Bowie at any age. Some incredible rock and roll songwriting, the kind that absolutely elevates itself above its contemporaries. Considered giving it an A/5 stars, but “Changes” has honestly always grated on me, so I hope the minus will do.

Listen, David Bowie has too many good albums. It is completely unfair. Changes and Life on Mars? are all-timers

me encantó ❤️‍🩹 te amamos david bowie!! 9 / 10

4 I admit that I’m not the biggest Bowie fan in the world. That’s not because I don’t like him, it’s more because he has such a vast catalogue of music that I just am not well versed. I’ve heard things here and there but I gotta admit I quite liked this. At first I was a little worried that it was going to sounds too dated but it really found a groove and mood that I dug a lot. Lyrics don’t normally jump out at me but this had a few right off the bat that had me interested. Musically it was equally interesting with a piano forward sound. I would very much like to listen to this one again.

4.5 Bowie! Having listened to the man's entire studio discography, I can confidently say this ranks among the best of his work, and in my opinion contains some of his most underrated tracks. Changes and Life on Mars? are of course great, but Kooks, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch are three favorites of mine I never hear get talked about - though truthfully, there's not a bad song here. This is the album that really exemplifies the shape of things to come for Bowie, and embodies all that I admire most about the man: his confident and unapologetic ability to be a freak (or a "kook") and to not only own it, but to make it his identity. I feel like he was the first artist to represent so-called outcasts and misfits, and so many other artists who would go on to do the same have him to thank for that (Nirvana covering Bowie anyone?) Anyway, while Hunky Dory isn't perfect, it's a damn good record. Rest in Peace Bowie, and I look forward to all the albums ahead on this list.

A real good journey back in time to when glam rock was born. Experimental and surprising sometimes and sometimes simple plain rock. Like saying hello to an old friend who keeps some secrets after all these years.

Didn’t listen to Bowie until these, challenges and did get why people loved Bowie. Great record.

Super.

Nice Bowie album, never heard the whole thing in its entirety. Has its quirks! Saved songs: Changes, Life On Mars?, Quicksand, Song For Bob Dylan

Great album. Really enjoyed it.

Love the piano parts in this album. The song writing is pretty strong as well, but I am not the biggest fan of Bowie's whiny voice at some points.

Hunky ❤️

well known and much loved

A perfect example of Bowie's mastery of lyrical structure, but the crescendo of the instrument are in places to short to fully get to enjoy the beautiful guitars

I don't understand what any of the songs are about, but the music is good.

Klassikkolinja jatkuu. Loistava levyhän tämäkin on, ja laatu pysyy kautta levyn kovana.

beautiful.

Life on mars an ultimate frfr. Good stuff dave

This is classic Bowie. I love that he never just stands pat on his song writing.

It has some classic tracks on it. As a whole album I enjoyed it more than the other Bowie we've had so far

Wonderful album. The first proper Bowie album in my opinion, and the first in a line of albums that is top tier until 1983's Let's Dance. Does not reach the heights of Ziggy Stardust or Aladdin Sane because there are a few tracks that just don't quite cut it. The rest are pure Bowie bliss. (4.2)

Le type est chaud

Hunky Dory is an album that was a part of my life that I never knew existed - I'd heard a good chunk of the songs and they have been in the background but never really knowing where they'd come from. This album serves as a turning point for Bowie and his career, with his next album being Ziggy Stardust, this album was more conventional, however evolved into more of an art rock/pop sound. Best: Life On Mars? Worst: Eight Line Poem 4.5 Stars

Wow, two Bowies in one week? I think there's a Flight of the Conchords song about that. Oddly, I'd never listened to this entire album before. I really like it. Feels like it's in the same wheelhouse sonically as Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. And maybe that's part of the reason why Bowie was so apt to change his sound so frequently. Maybe not. He seems like a weirdo, right? So who knows. But yeah, 70s piano-driven melodic rock. Why has this sound not seen a renaissance of some kind in modern music? Or has it and I just don't know about it? Kids these days...

Reminiscing of a life long ago when Bowie was the sound

Solid album

Pretty great Bowie album. HOWEVER this album is too long. Too many of the songs sound too close to the excellent opener (Changes). Cut 2 of them please. Or make more songs like Andy Worhol. 4/5

A few notable tracks. Pretty classic Bowie before he hit his galactic phase.

Det var ett bra labum, men samtidigt kan jag inte släppa att Bowie gör lite småtråkig musik?

Hvað er hægt að segja um þetta? Bowie er einfaldlega bestur.

It has some of Pop's iconic moments, but, gosh, Daivid does guff as well

Changes…had no idea that came out when I was just 2!

Really neat. As with other 1970-ish classic rock albums, a hit or two, and then a lot of avant-garde things that are kind of all over the place. Great production. Listened 2x in a row.

Fav Tracks: Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life On Mars?, Quicksand, Andy Warhol, Song for Bob Dylan It's a nice album as a whole, only problem is that Life On Mars is SO good that it makes every other song look a little weak in comparison

A really enjoyable record. Multiple times I had a feeling music from this album inpired other songs decades later. Highlights: Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?

Bowie sz, to jest całkiem dobre ;p

I’m not a Bowie fan in general, but this is my favorite album of his.

Clear evolution through the album into more experimental areas. Enjoyed the vocals and liked the folk-rock mixtures.

It has Life on Mars? Nuff said.

Very good songwriting and the chord changes are very unique.

Loved hearing the songs I’d never heard, like the Andy Warhol song!

Haven't really loved others by him, despite the singles and stellar reputation. this one's great start to finish. Bowie has many personas and personalities--seems like there's something for everyone and someone for all of him.

Changes, oh you pretty things and Life on Mars are classics that will never die. Queen Bitch is great classic rock too. The rest are solid but not quite as memorable to me. Still a really good album and the beginning of Bowie as a musical genius

Bowie is a cool dood

Listened to on 7/9/22 4/5 Favorite song: changes I loved the first half of this album and then Andy Warhol took a weird turn but all in all it was perfect to jam out to and super upbeat plus changes is a BOP

David Bowie has an unusual voice, somewhat unrefined compared to todays modern over-processed pop singers, however it’s full of character and passion for what he’s singing. There’s a bunch of very recognisable songs on here (Changes, Life on Mars). Unfortunately, there’s a few that now feel pretty dated or don’t seem like they should be taken seriously (Kooks, Fill Your Heart) On the flip side 'Queen Bitch' and 'Bewley Brothers' are full of unusual tones and ideas. Songs like ‘Song for Bob Dylan’ sung in exactly the way Bob Dylan sings sums up Bowie well, a chameleon always pushing boundaries and trying out new ideas. 7/10

8.3 rating

Wow, haven't really taken the time to appreciate this. Superb

Little dude and I were listening to this album. I put it on pause and he complained until I unpaused. I think that about sums it up.

Genre: Pop Rock 4/5 A pop rock sensation and icon, David Bowie is one of the most ubiquitous names in all of the music world. One of his earliest triumphs, Hunky Dory, is a quick glimpse into where David Bowie would push his music to. Early essences of glam rock mingle with classic pop rock sensibilities in what is a big stepping stone for Bowie, and is an album where he truly starts to find his form. The light and chipper intro, Changes, is one of his best and one of his quaintest. Inoffensive, introspective, and cute, it serves as the beginning of his more mainstream phase, but he's never without his usual theatrics. One big difference in this project as opposed to his previous ones is the emphasis on piano. Even in his more baroque pop days, Bowie was certainly utilizing the guitar more, and while it's still present in this (Queen Bitch is near proto-punk in its use of guitars), the emphasis on keyboards is felt in how laidback most of these arrangements are. The two big tracks from the album, Changes and Life on Mars?, are both piano-based and both act as tremendous vessels for Bowie's voice. While the album sags a bit once you flip to the B-side, it's a really tremendous effort, with the bumps in the road still being enjoyable. Love me some Bowie.

Альбом... В целом не зацепил, хотя очень классных композиций полно. Не показался достаточно цельным. За очень хорошие композиции можно добавить выше оценку.

One of my favorite Bowie albums, but by no means perfect. There are a few dud songs on here that hold this album back, but it's loaded with high points. Do the bad songs (Kooks is godawful) mar the album enough to lower it from a five to a four? I gave Fleetwood Mac's Rumours a four because Don't Stop is terrible and ruins the flow of the album. It's also one of the big singles off the album and poorly represents it. Kooks is a throwaway deep cut... but it is goofy as all get out. Does that do enough to lower the quality of an album that gave us Changes, Queen Bitch, Life On Mars, The Bewlay Brothers, Andy Warhol, and Song for Bob Dylan? That's a tough one. Overall, Bowie is a significantly better artist than Fleetwood Mac. His catalog runs circles around theirs. Is the bass line on The Chain as good as the string swells on Life On Mars? Tough call. Really tough call. On the flip side, I gave Blood On the Tracks and Blackstar fives, and those are not perfect albums either. If you're reading this, you already know the rating I gave it, but as I write this, I'm still pondering it. It's one of the toughest albums I've had to rate up to this point. Go figure it's one of my all time favorite albums.

Great great album

8/10. Two quite good songs, a few good ones, and some meh.

Had some really solid songs but I felt like the mix was a little hollow. 8/10

my favorite bowie album. A complete trip!

Somewhat mixed bag featuring a bunch of songs that are among Bowie's best and a bunch that... aren't. Dana Gillespie did "Andy Warhol" better (perhaps unsurprising since he wrote it for her in the first place) and "Fill You Heart"... just... no. (I understand why he swapped out "Bombers", cos the latter is really not very good either, but that wasn't the thing to replace it with.) But look at this thing: Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Life on Mars, Kooks, Queen Bitch, Bewlay Brothers... I have to give the album four stars cos the individual good things about it are *so* good even if the whole album is kind of second-tier. Just think: Ziggy was only six months away...

A great album. The more I've listened to it the more I enjoy it. So many great songs. Standouts: Changes, Life on Mars? Other greats: Oh you Pretty Things, Kooks, Queen Bitch 4/5

Great album. Bit up and down, but the hits make it worthwhile.

my first bowie was a good bowie

If I must…

A classic, obviously

What can I say about this one that hasn't already been said? I loved the piano all over, and the slight music hall feel in many of its parts. Beautiful from start to finish.

Its Bowie

This was more like it, David. excellent album

02/10/22

Very cool album

Listen to quicksand. Send influence by chord progressions on George Harrison's All Things Must Pass. Love this era of British psychedelic pop rock

Bowie is one of the true originals. His works have been fringe in my expewrience, but it is gaining in my mind

Great singles, but too much filler for a 5

I've never been a big Bowie fan, but the more I hear his stuff the more I like it. I for sure like the typical radio hits but never really listened to anything outside that. He's massively talented and from what I've seen in interviews he appears very intelligent as well.

-”Changes'' is obviously a pretty famous song that I’ve heard before. It’s basically guaranteed to get stuck in your head. Also, there is some cool bass going on in some parts -”Oh! You Pretty Things” is pretty good, I’ll have to relisten -”Andy Warhol” is pretty spooky and psychedelic. The whipping is cool. The whole thing is erratic but somehow fits together I think? -”Song for Bob Dylan” is better than any song Bob Dylan wrote lmao -Cool shreddy guitar in “Queen Bitch”

Life on Mars + a full supporting cast of songs. Bowie continues to be ~ a vibe ~

Snilld

Beautiful, of course

Didn't know he made Changes! Heard it long before and great way to start the album. Fun upbeat album worth another listen. Never listened to bowie much. Queen Bitch is good too and quicksand

Despite this hitting the skip when I was a kid and the row that ensued, I am not convinced I heard the second side of this, not as much as the first side. Some amazing tunes and some of the tracks touch on almost electronic status.

Always been aware of Bowies work but never felt the need to delve any deeper. So many good songs on here it could be a greatest hits. Life on Mars? - Greatest song written ?? Kooks - Questionable fade out !! Absolute top drawer.

I can appreciate it, but I still can't say I'm a Bowie fan. Favorite track - Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol

Several big tracks - not as consistent as Ziggy, but the lows weren’t as bad as Heroes.

Goed album, maar niet het beste. 'Life on Mars' blijft wel een prachtig nummer!

105. Hunky Dory - David Bowie 11 tracks. I had just recently decided that I wasn't a fan of Bowie, and then along comes this album that is quite hard to dislike, even though I might not like all the tracks. Now I'm all confused again. Do I actually like Bowie or not? 🤔 4/5

Good shi

"Life On Mars" siempre será un rolón, también me gustan "Song for Bob Dylan" y "Queen Bitch". 9/10

A transitional work, to be sure, but what a fascinating one! Some great tracks here, as well as some that could have seen the editing room floor, but all paint a picture of an enigmatic writer/performer building to something much, much larger.

Reminds me of someone who was very special to me once upon a time. David bowie was an excellent storyteller and had an uncanny ability to make you want to dance to them

Bowie is amazing, as always.

Solid album. Generally enjoy all vintage Bowie. Life on Mars? is probably my top Bowie song period. The full album is a good listen, but I don't think it has quite the impact to get the perfect 5 rating. 4/5

Classic Bowie. Great stuff.

Best Bowie album i've listened to so far.

Finally a Bowie album I enjoyed from start to finish - great stuff

Hunky Foury 👍🏾

Some songs stand out to me - Changes and Life On Mars?, obviously, but also Andy Warhol. Taking jabs at Bob Dylan. Overall, not bad; some of those songs I would pick into my "best songs" list. But they wouldn't be near the top.

Damn good shit! Sexy, interesting, and so creative.

Terrific album!

Anytime a Bowie album pops up here or elsewhere I always end up thinking to myself, “I don’t listen to Bowie enough”

my favorite so far

Don't love as much as, say, Station to Station or Low. Queen Bitch has a great riff that I should learn how to play though.

Super strong Bowie. A handful of classics, a set of strong 2nd tier catalog and the remaining are all pretty interesting or quirky.

Not my favourite Bowie album, but still very solid. "Life on Mars?" is one of my all time favourite David Bowie songs and stands out on this album. The other songs did not grab me as much, although after a few listens there were a couple that started to grow on me.

I might like some of the singles off Station to Station better but this is a more complete album. Life on Mars? is the main standout, but I really liked the songs dedicated to people, especially the sick blues rock sound on the one for Bob Dylan. I love Bob Dylan Saved: Changes, Life on Mars?*, Andy Warhol, Song for Bob Dylan

Oh you pretty things was a great listen

got some classic bangers on this guy

This is the first time that I’ve ever heard this album - but when I listened to it, I felt like I’d known it all my life. There was such familiarity in the songs, obviously with Changes, Life on Mars and All You Pretty Things - but all of the other tracks sounded like I’d been listening to them all my life. I’m rating this album 7/10.

A delightful Bowie time

actually not bad

ch-ch-ch-ch changes!

Bowie's had a leader's hold on pop, but here you can here him going for it in a really accessible way. For that reason, there's a lot of "This is nice, and elevated by David." Now, I had never thought to draw a line between Bowie and White, but I caught something in Oh! You Pretty Things: Mostly the composition, but there's something to be said in comparing the piano to guitar and drums. I can't help letting Ziggy overshadow this record, but Hunky Dory was certainly a step in that direction. The powerful, building songwriting is in evidence in Quicksand. The songs-about-singers are incongruous, but hint at conceptuality. And again, it's Bowie: He gets a pass.

This album is just Hunky Dory!

"Life on Mars?" is my favorite Bowie song. Easy album to listen to. Don't go crazy with David Bowie but I thought it was a solid album all throughout. 8/10.

Great album. Classic Bowie

Pretty good. Strong start. Enjoyable throughout.

Much better than the first David Bowie album we had!

Instant favourite.

Very good, few bangers on it

What is there to say about this masterpiece of an album. One of Bowie's best which makes it one of rock music's best. Hi-lights; Life on Mars, Changes, Quicksand...man side one is Epic! A somewhat quirky and weaker side 2 keeps this from being a 5 star album...4.5 stars

Pretty good album, as expected. I consistently appreciate the polish on Bowie‘s albums, there’s always the right amount of instruments and vocals. Several good tracks

classic, tragic this dude had to die at the alamo to get his music out there

Good Bowie album. Changes is a classic and the rest of the album holds up well. I enjoyed most of it and would listen again. 7.8/10

Excellent album, very diverse with the style of songs. I only knew this as the life on Mars album, but now I see it's much more than that.

4of5, one of the best bowie.

A good album

Classic Bowie. He was such a unique talent, and it's on full display here.

Some iconic songs like changes and life on Mars that I could listen to all the time and then others that I’m not bothered about

Liked iit, especiellay: - oh! You pretty thing - Queen bitch - The bewlay brothers

First classic album by Bowie

A classic, some of the best songs from David Bowie

Dačo jeben

Klar wohin die Reise geht mit Bowie Beim nebenbei hören geht's unter Ich werd drauf zurückkommen

Now I have to choose between changes and life on mars, dont do this to me. Otherwise so good

Bowie.

Esperava outra coisa de David Bowie, este álbum surpreendeu me pela positiva. Fortes traços de rock e bastante bom de se ouvir. Nota:7/10

Hunky Dory is kind of like a road map to the rest of Bowie's output in the 70s. I'm always surprised that the album works so well, despite having such stylistically different sounding songs. Favs: Kooks, Queen Bitch, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars

I committed to giving this one a good few listens as I really haven't listened to that much Bowie. Some brill piano on this album and a smattering of nice basslines The transition into the chorus of Oh You Pretty Things just slaps every time - I'd forgotten how great that song is. Queen Bitch was a nice new find for me. A nice album to perk up a slow afternoon

Listening to first track and scrolling through the track list, it already feels like it's probably gonna be a 5. Never listen to Bowie routinely, but I still massively appreciate that he was a genius. I think, to match how I've reviewed other albums I'll give this a 4, cos even though I can appreciate it and there were classic tracks, its not something that'd make my regular rotation. 4/5

Dit is mehr mein Bowie

Ch-ch-ch changes!

Absolute masterpiece. Brilliant album but let down by one or two album tracks. Life on Mars, Kooks & Changes make up for it 10 fold though. Never got into Bowie’s later stuff prior to his death but his early decades were just banger after banger. Deserves its 4.

flipping epic

Turn and face the strange. Bowie Wednesday and Thursday, what a treat. What a shape shifter. What a great set of hits. Phwoar!!! 🦀🐓🦄🦓🦏🦇🐧🦈🕷

Brilliant ! I don’t like everything he did but this was early classic Bowie. Particularly love Changes and Kooks. ****

Awesome. Didn't expect such cool guitar

Hyvää Bowieta! Parit hittibiisit ja lisäksi aiemmin itselleni tuntemattomia, mutta silti tarttuvia biisejä. Tykkäsin!

Super...two opening tracks as strong as any album imo

Few duds but still a great listen. 8/10

Obviously a great album, with great vocals and a lot of classics on it! I really enjoyed it :)

Generally brilliant

A big change after The man who sold the world, this one trades the harder edge for the catchier tunes. Contains my favourite Bowie tune: Queen Bitch

Very good album, obvi!

The highs on this are very high. Life on Mars, Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch. The rest is decent but not that memorable. 4/5

Plenty of classic songs but other Bowie albums I like better

ch ch ch ch chaaaaanges. Pretty good but also very kinda strange

Is there Life On MAAAAAAAAAAARS

bowie est devenu un top parce q'il en était un au début

some real bops throughout and just an enjoyable listen all around

Not my favorite Bowie album, but pretty good.

really enjoyed this - never been a bowie listener, but this is great. The style really changes song to song, but it all feels very BOWIE. I especially loves life on mars. Joyful, weird, fun.

Experimental in a good way, fun piano based rock!

Si es David Bowie pero no por eso se le va a dejar de revisar.

will always love life on mars

Still known to me as the album with Life on mars. Fill your Heart, Andy warhol, and Bewlay Brothers were surprise hits though. Bowie is still best however

Classic Bowie! Lots of songs I'd never heard before, so it's good to listen to it in album form. I can hear the early stylings of future Bowie songs in a lot of these tracks (Queen Bitch = Suffragette City; Life on Mars?>Ziggy Stardust Album, etc.) Highlights: -Changes -Life on Mars? -Queen Bitch

It’s a shame about kooks

I mean, Bowie, right?

Another Bowie album I had only heard bits and pieces of. Changes and Life on Mars are great, ofc. Kooks reminds me of the Beach Boys or something, pop harmonies etc. It does fall off a little bit towards the end for me, but overall pretty good.

It's David Bowie so it's gotta be good. Most of this album is simply good, but there are two songs here that I would say are my favourite songs of his: Changes and Life On Mars. While the album is a 4/5 those two songs are 6/5.

classic Bowie, including some of my favourite hits - C

Classic Bowie. Would recommend to anyone who is not acquainted with his music.

Holy shit! This is the first time I've honestly listened to this album in it's entirety. Awesome album, familiar with maybe 3 songs but that changed today. Fucking Killer Album! RIP Mr. Bowie

So much range, he's got it all. Plenty of obvious hits but Looks is my highlight

This was in fact, Hunky Dory.

Great album. Will definitely keep on playlist. Besides the obvious classics some beautiful melodies - especially like Bewlay Brothers. Then there’s Fill your Heart which is wacky. Feel the album would make a great musical. Jen

Kuten Bowiella yleensäkin, hittibiisit ovat aivan timanttia. Kokonaisuutena en oikein saanut otetta tästä levystä, ja suuri osa biiseistä oli aika keskinkertaisia. Toisaalta jos levyn kappaleista melkein puolet on ikivihreitä hittejä niin vaikea antaa alle nelosta.

Pure Bowie !

solid sound, changes is an absolute jam

Could clearly hear the different instruments, particularly piano. Bowie’s voice is fruity and impossible to mistake. I knew all the songs even though I didn’t recognize the names of all of them.

Good Bowie album. Front loaded with hits, but enjoyed most of it. Not sure I'm that keen on the chugging acoustic guitar that goes through a lot of it, but otherwise liked the songs, arrangements, production and instrumentation.

I liked this more than I thought I would. Thank you David Bowie

Starting off strong.

Very good.

2 of the greatest songs ever, and some other pretty great songs too (Oh! You pretty things, Kooks, Quicksand, Queen Bitch). Probably Bowie’s 4th/5th best.

Changes. Life on mars. Good songs.

Arguably Bowie's best album.

Theatrical in a way that only Bowie could really do. Favorite tracks: "Life on Mars?", "Queen Bitch"

Good one. Not my preferred bowie but I digress

Mmmm me gusta al principio

Not my favorite Bowie, but highlighted by a couple great songs it still stands up.

Miss you Dave

"Life on Mars" is really good. I am honestly surprised at my lack of opinion on the rest of this album. I want to like it because my opinion of David Bowie is really high but ultimately I don't strongly like or dislike it. 3/5 probably would not listen to again

On one hand, “Changes” is a classic rock song for the fucking history books. So is “Oh! You Pretty Things,” and “Life On Mars” is life-defining, heartwrenching, one of the best songs ever written. On the other hand, “Kooks” actively kinda sucks, as does “Fill Your Heart.” Also, a lot of these songs don’t add up to nearly as much as the general reception would imply, many of them count more toward what I feel is a presence of dead weight in this album. It’s not that it’s bad, not at all, just… very overrated. 6.6/10

day 6 — Hunky Dory — David Bowie (1971) genre: art pop runtime: 42 min rating: 2.5/5 fav track: life on mars? thoughts: i think i need to listen to more of his music to rlly get a feel for it. life on mars? is prettyy good and overall this wasn’t a waste of time. i think i will revisit it bc some of the songs didn’t click for me on the first listen

david bowie half, etwas besser als die anderen (oder ich hatte einfach ein offeneres ohr für david bowie...)

Better than the other one

I mean, this album starts with one of the best Bowie songs of all time. Starts strong, lost me in the middle, but came back in the second half with Queen Bitch. Kind of sounds like a musical soundtrack at times, but in a weirdo way that is so classic Bowie. Overall, a solid early Bowie work, and a good first album of his to listen to all the way through.

I guess this was kind of the beginning of "PRIME BOWIE"? Some great tracks on here. The lows are kind of low for prime Bowie (such as the novelty tracks for Warhol and Dylan, IMO) but the highs are as high as anything he did.

Some classic Bowie tracks. Overall average album though

It’s a 3/5 because it’s Bowie but I’m not happy about it. Whimsical. Transports me to an earlier time. Not for me but I’m sure someone out there loves this.

Still don't get this album. "Changes" seems miles ahead of the rest of the songs... Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: Changes

06/12 It was fine

I like Bowie a lot but this album is hard carried by 1 great song. Everything besides Changes I can take or leave.

This isn’t my favourite Bowie album. I think this the third of his on this list that I’ve got so far. It is perfectly good for what it is but he went on to make better albums.

A listenable album with some intriguing tracks but overall not one of my favorites of Bowie's

Bowie, almost always good 😃

This is the fourth Bowie album I've gotten in two weeks, two back-to-back. Bowie fatigue is real. Still like Ziggy better.

I knew this album from the two most famous songs off it. Those being 'life on mars?' and 'changes'. However I'm currently listening to the whole thing and it's really cool actually.

Liked some of it quite a bit others got a bit boring but probably need some repeat listens

Has some good tracks but not my favorite Bowie. I should listen to more Bowie.

Middle-of-the-road Bowie album. My problem is that, do we really need to listen to every single Bowie album before we die? I've noticed that there have been lots of examples big, influential British artists that have half a dozen albums on this list. Elvis has one. Nirvana is missing two of four studio albums. Motown is embarrassingly sparsely represented. Feels like a little colonialism.

Saight

Pretty good. And strange.

Oh look. Another Bowie Album... The obsession with him on this list is a bit concerning. This one isn't as bad as the others, and at least has that Changes song that I like.

I've been singing the lyric "Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow" along with Bush's Everything Zen for over 30 years now, and thought it was a perfectly Gavin-esque kind of lyric, and here it was Bowie all along! I also learned today that Elton and David are only 3 months apart in age. Based on this album, it's apparent both of them and the Beatles, are all cut from the same cloth. I'm not much of a fan of any of them, not, for some reason I have far more appreciation for Bowie than I have for those others. Somehow, he just did it better.

Changes - 4 Oh! You Pretty Things - 4 Eight Line Poem - 2 Life on Mars - 4.5 Kooks - 3 Quicksand - 2.5 Fill Your Heart - 2 Andy Warhol - 2.5 Song for Bob Dylan - 3 Queen Bitch - 4 The Bewlay Brothers - 3

A great example of its time. Changes has been played to death of course but the rest, not as familiar, exemplify the directions Bowie would take. Good choice for a 1001 albums.

Quirky, contemplative songs with a flair of showmanship. This is my first real Bowie experience and I don't find myself captivated, but there's some good stuff here and I look forward to more.

Bowie is so talented and such an icon, and what an iconic album! Fav song is ‘Life on Mars?’.

Changes and Bewlay Brothers are great bookends but the rest of this didn’t do much for me

Man I love changes and life on mars but I really didn’t mesh with the rest of the album

album #54 thank you David Bowie for creating Changes so that it could be covered by Butterfly Boucher for Shrek 2. it's a banging album; there is likely to be a Bowie album for everyone - this one is definitely more my speed. that being said, i don't think there needed to be songs on the album dedicated to warhol/reed/dylan - their egos were big enough lol. ꩜ average track rating: 2.9/5 ꩜ favourite track(s): changes, life on mars? ꩜ least favourite track(s): eight line poem, song for bob dylan ꩜ album rating: ★★★☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,035 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 30 (+1 Hunky Dory) ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 11 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 43

Not exactly a masterpiece, although there are great songs here: Changes and Life on Mars? aren't so much songs as icons. Oh you pretty Things, Fill your Heart and Queen Bitch - surely the only song outside of children's television to get away with the phrase "bibbitty bobbetty hat" - are nearly as good. And the deeper cuts - Kooks, the Bewley Brothers and Eight Line Poem - are fine enough. Only Quicksand, Andy Warhol and Song for the Bob Dylan let the side down But as a pointer to what came next this is pretty impressive.

i think that this is a very good record, however i personally didn't find it breathtaking or life-changing. i suppose it might not be completely my style of music, hence i had trouble with resonating with it. i obviously liked "changes" and i also enjoyed "song for bob dylan", i guess due to my passion for his songs haha. i think i could've easily ranked it a 4, if i was being a bit more objective, however for now it's more of a 3.5 if i'm sticking with my genuine feelings. i will also definitely have to come back to it to dive more into the lyricism on here.

Bowie just isn't for me maybe? It's alright, a couple of strong tracks but it's piano led pop rock and doesn't do that much for me.

Not my cup of tea. Did save 6 songs from it to give it another listen

ANOTHER Bowie Album?!! I think I've had 5 and I'm barely into this project. Here's the deal, I don't get a hard-on for Bowie like so many others do. I think he was an artist of his time and there seems to be a had-to-be there about his music. That said Hunky Dory is probably my favorite of his so far. It cuts a lot of the rock and glam and pares it down a lighter, gentler feel. Changes is undeniably excellent, and Life on Mars might be my most favorite Bowie song. I'll come back to this.

He's got a shitload of albums on this list, and they've been very "hit and miss" with me so far. This one was slightly more hit, there were a few really nice tracks, but still some filler.

I enjoyed this more than the other Bowie albums

The last album before David Bowie got the recognition he deserved. In this album David Bowie shows a lot of creativity in his song writing, starting to incorporate a lot of piano rock, but without achieving the big moments on his following material. While this album is very sweet and catchy, I don't think it has the artists most memorable moments, except for the super catchy "Changes" and the big and epic "Life On Mars?". The rest of the album, while still great, didn't do anything truly special or striking for me. Besides, a problem I have with the album is the volume. Sometimes, it sounds too quite. I get that there are very tranquil parts, but I had to turn the volume up a lot in order to hear anything. I did appreciate a lot the positive energy this project radiates, but I honestly didn't find it super interesting.

6/10 the hits are bangers but I don’t care that much for the rest of it. Forgettable.

chchchchanges

Всегда относился прохладно к этому альбому. Дух первой половины семидесятых в полный рост - и положительные стороны и отрицательные.

30/04/2026 Shock horror, another Bowie album. Granted this has one or two good songs. I'm tired of this man now. He needs to off off... Spotify listeners: 20.5 million

David Bowie is a branch of rock n roll that I just haven’t gone down. I’m still not sure if I want to go down it.

Very good

Wenz: I quite like this album, especially the energy, favourite song is “Changes” Shermz: Its another Bowie album... I prefer this one. "Changes" wasnt too bad :) 3.5/5?

Only my second Bowie album so far, I'm sure one week I'll get two of his back to back. Changes, Life on Mars, and Quicksand are gorgeous songs, among Bowie's best which is a big list. There's some cool moments on the rest like Queen Bitch and Any Warhol, but the rest of the album I can take it or leave it. Always taking it on a long road trip of course.

I liked it, but it's not Bowie's best work. Life On Mars? is my favourite track, and shows glimmers of his later era. He's missing something here that he doesn't find until "The Rise and Fall...", but it's still decent. 3/5

Eight of the nine David Bowie albums within my first 296? This seems unlikely... According to ChatGPT less than a 1 in 5000 chance? Great, I am cursed. Anyway, this one is better than some. However, if you are like me and don't like songs that name drop other singers then be warned; there is a song on here where he sings to Robert Zimmerman about Bob Dylan. There is also another, perhaps worse, about Andy Warhol.

Well let's give Bowie another shot... I really didn't like Aladdin Sane. In retrospect it might be one of the records I enjoyed the least of the 100+ records. Bowie just doesn't click with me and that record is often pretty grating. This record isn't as grating and has some pretty nice tunes. The songs flow nicely into eachother and the production is actually really nice. Particularly the string section of Life on Mars is really nice. The following Kooks is also pretty fun and cheerful. If this record was a lemon, I've just squeezed every good drop of juice I could get from it, because after this song it all goes downhill. Quicksand and Fill your heart are just straight up boring. Andy Warhol has a minute long intro only to bait you with a nice guitar riff that leads to just another uninteresting song. By the time we've reached song for Bob Dylan I really want to put on something else. Queen Bitch is alright, but not enough by a long shot to make up for the previous four songs. The Bewlay Brothers is barely a song. It's one minute spoken word with an intermezzo of 30 seconds of song that's actually kinda decent followed again with a minute of spoken word. In the end this records feels very meh. Bowie is certainly capable of making music I enjoy, which makes it all the more enfuriating when he teases that in front of me only to take it away once more. Not everything is made for me and that is fine. However I am not looking forward to the other 7 records on the 1001 list of Bowie. Who knows, perhaps I will find a song or two I will actually like. 5/10

Muy bueno, la primera cancion fue de Shrek 2 asi que excelente

*1971. *Starts off strong with Changes. *Life on Mars is the only other song I know here. *I'm going to give this another listen. I like Bowie, but I always seem to zone out on his albums. RATING - 7/10

Not my favorite Bowie album, but the appeal of the main singles like Changes and Life on Mars? Is undeniable. Looking forward to hearing more Bowie on this list!

alcune canzoni molto belle, come changes e lifes of mars. bello ma non mi è sembrato nulla di incredibile.

Pretty good, I expect Bowie albums to be great. I think my opinion is clouded by my expectations, I will need to relisten in the future.

Pretty good, though honestly for a Bowie album I felt a distinct lack of personality. Still better than most, but not a particularly stunning moment in his discography. 2.7/5 -> 3/5

ok. changes is obnoxious

sounds like music from the early 70s, but also kind of timeless. not something i'd remember or listen to, but is nice...

My usual torment of not being able to really get into Bowie. I'm sure one day he'll click but his voice just grates me a bit and I don't really know what he's on about half the time. Changes is one of the greatest songs ever made
