remain a bowie denier but maybe if enough come up it'll change, enjoyed this a bit more than I anticipated
How many fucking times is Bowie on here?
Bowie Album #6 of.... 9. Ugh. Let's get to it. Overall it was pretty good. Lots of fun songs, some chill vibes. Pretty much just solid across the board, no real duds but no real breakouts. Best song: Kooks
Abit plain
It's nice but it doesn't really give the same vibes I hear from his other songs, maybe I just haven't got used to it since I don't immediately just like a song it happens overtime
You know what, I thought this would be an EASY 4 star but it's actually a 3 star for me. I love David Bowie but this album has 3 absolute bangers and 8 absolutely mid tracks. Life on Mars is one of the best songs of all time, but the album it sits in doesnt fill me with wonder
I'm a sucker for a good piano tune. Many of these tracks feature the piano (at around the time Elton John was getting popular). Guitar features on the other tracks. Two massive hits on the record but with three tracks praising other popular figures of the time (Andy Wahol, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed - but not mentioned Lou by name) I feel it is lyrically clutching at straws a bit, while the music itself is a lot more solid. Tempted to give it a three but ultimately 4 for both of the well know hits. Nah changed my mind again 3.
Average at best
Creat album, bit not really my style, a few songs were to forgetable
more lows than highs
Not Bowie's best, but the hits are undeniable
I like Bowie but wonder how he became so famous.
It's okay. Just okay
Cool, but not my favorite from him.
Some hits but a lot of it sounded the same.
7/10 - It’s a good Bowie album.
1. changes - it was so fun i just wish the production was louder/clearer/more adjusted (??) 2. oh you pretty things - i like the smooth transition into the next song 3.
Muy creativo, muy experimental y muy versátil David
Tough album to rate for me. I don't have any strong connection to the mammoth figure that is David Bowie. His music just didn't click with me, perhaps if I was around when it was released it would have been better. This however is a relatively good Bowie album in my opinion, it is quite enjoyable, especially in the first half of it. Later on he starts losing me a bit, with some of the typical Bowie weirdness which just isn't for me. 3/5
Pretty solid album with some hits.
hunky okay
First half was really good
In my opinion far from Bowie's best work. But its high points show glimpses of the mastery that is to come from him.
Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
A consistent album with a cohesive sound, best known for Life on Mars and Changes.
I thought it was a pretty good listen, although I don’t listen to this genre so it was a little rough to get into.
I've just realised, there are NINE David Bowie albums on here. NINE? Fucking hell. I'm of firm belief that nobody should have more than 3 albums on here. Hunky Dory is fine, but imo nothing special. A couple of good songs, like the opener and Queen Bitch, but otherwise it's nothing to write home about.
6/10
This list is doing some work to convince me how much I don't appreciate David Bowie while still allowing me to retain a lot of my lack of appreciation. Life on Mars and Changes are great, the rest pretty forgettable to me.
Not a spectacular Bowie album but a couple of great tunes
Jo det var väl bra. Ett par hits. Strak trea.
6.6/10
Fine listen.
75
Not my favourite Bowie album. Changes is great but the other songs didn't really appeal to me.
There's too much Bowie on this list. Still, this is fine,
Ещё один альбом, темы которого разнообразны и интересны, раскрывают личность автора и позволяют узнать много чего интересного. Но с точки звучания это увы не моё, но разбирать это всё очень любопытно
3+
Another legend.
A solid listen. Was only familiar with Life of Mars before and enjoyed the entire album
Some amazing tunes on here obviously life on mars is goated. Bit distracting that David Bowie has like maybe the worst sounding voice ever
David Bowie is an artist I really like but not really entire albums, instead I listen to individual songs that I like and leave the rest as it sometimes becomes to much of Bowies style at once for me. This album doesn't really change that for me but nevertheless its a good album with extremely great individual songs.
not the best bowie, but still, lots of iconic songs
nao ouvi inteiro mas eh okay tem piores
medio pelo, life on mars, changes y oh you pretty things carrean, es rarisima andy warhol, capaz queen bitch zafa
I've listened to parts of this. Band in high school made me play some of these songs. Favorites: - Changes - Life on Mars? - Quicksand Thoughts: I like David Bowie's music, but I feel it is a bit repetitive sometimes. I would like to hear his voice more than his instrumentals.
Zwei tolle Songs.
I never cared for him, but he certainly is better than a bunch of crap available these days
Good album with poetic songs.
#273/1001. Hi David, it's you again in this list. Yet again you managed to put out an album, which has some classics, some boring songs better forgotten and some quite nice ones I don't remember hearing before. At least there is not too much theatricality. This leaves me in the same position with you as before: I won't be selling the few Bowie albums I own, but I don't have a reason to buy new ones. In another words: I've grown over the phase where you or your music impressed me. Luv, an-ex fan.
It's fine, Bowie singing over some OK 70s pop/alt rock, or something like it. A little hard to pin down. Some decent music and guitar playing.
It was fine, some songs lost me, but Life on Mars? Is great.
Черговий альбом Боуі, чергова трійка від мене.
6.5/10
not my type of music, the first tracks are good the last ones are too alternative
não fez minha brisa
Listened on the way home.
Bowie if Bowie was The Beatles! I like Bowie.
Some ups and downs on this one. I like it more than some of the other Bowie albums I've had on here, but it makes me feel restless and untethered.
too musical theater-y 2.5
I liked this! The second half was more my speed than the first, but there were standout tracks on each half. Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch were my favorites. The lyricism in everything is undeniably amazing, and I love Bowie’s voice. 3 ⭐️
Best song is Changes.
I don’t really connect with this album emotionally at all. Maybe I need to listen to more Bowie, but I feel like I’m missing something that’s obvious to everyone else. Favourite tracks: Life On Mars, Quicksand, The Bewlay Brothers
First time listening to a full Bowie album. Not sure if this is something I'd return to often - it's a bit quaint and jangly, but you can't deny the big songs like "Changes" and "Life on Mars" bring anything other than utter timeless classics.
Entertaining and different than I expected. I've never listened to David Bowie before, so this was a good first impression. I liked a few songs. and appreciated the creativity and experiments that other albums in this time period never had. 7/10
quem diria q o bowie é bom né kkk adorei os vocais
Less cohesive than I was expecting... a few quirky (and not great, TBH) tracks. I guess that's what Ziggy Stardust is for. :-)
I thought this album was fine. I really enjoyed the song Changes, but everything else was kinda just there. I enjoy other Bowie songs more than the ones on this album, but I also wouldn’t be mad about it being played.
The album started of strong but couldn't keep up with itself. Couple good songs followed by a bunch of stinkers.
Some really famous songs on this album that I really like, but wouldn’t listen to the whole album again.
Ibland väldigt bra, nästan allt känns välgjort men inte tillräckligt många låtar som är toppen imo.
Kooks is fun and silly. I forgot about Changes too! It's interesting to hear an earlier work of his, even if it wasn't my favorite overall. 6/10
According to Wikipedia, David Bowie was a fan of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground. He was one of the producers of Reed's Transformer album. Listening to Bowie's Hunky Dory, I could hear the influence. The difference in the sound between Reed and Bowie, is that Bowie's is more cohesive, they all worked together. What Bowie was saying worked.
can never go wrong with bowie
Heard Before? Only "Changes" and "Life on Mars". Notes: - what glorious perfect production. so dry and crisp with perfectly separated instruments. a masterclass. - every single use of background vocals was brilliant. - all the arrangements are well-considered and the songs are lovingly structured even when they lack hooks. - I'm not always much of a lyrics guy but I did notice that "Andy Warhol" was intentionally funny, and "Bob Dylan" was unintentionally much funnier. - this list has an embarrassing lack of several things, especially females and piano. at least we get lots of great piano here. - I much prefer the Tiny Tim version of "Fill Your Heart". - "Brothers Bewlay" was overstuffed and pointless. Verdict: Typical Bowie. Tries a number of new things, succeeds at most of them due to sheer talent and smart collaboration. I can see why people love him. Listen Again? Probably not. Every time I try to get into Bowie I listen to one album a couple of times, and then move on to other things. He could do almost everything well, but I always end up wanting to hear the people that did the same thing better.
Ah fun music, how I’ve missed you There’s some good ones in here, Changes is great and I liked the last 3 songs on the album quite a bit as well. I definitely liked it more than Low. I’d say I was slightly disappointed with this one considering a lot of people have this as a top 50 album of all time and I don’t think I absolutely loved any songs on this one, but every song is above average.
Good stuff, especially after the last 2 days. Definitely listenable, and I would say start-to-finish. Changes is a great Opening Track, but unfortunately also the best and most recognizable song on the album, too. Always thought there was a neat Stevie Wonder vibe to the beginning of that song... Interesting references to Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan, though I didn't pick up the messaging on my morning commute. Really liked Queen Bitch for some reason, even though I thought it had a king of Lou Reed or Velvet Underground feel. Again about Bowie, always the chameleon. Not a 4, closer to 3 1/2.
What stands out about this album is how it showcases several different styles of rock while still maintaining a cohesive sound. The influences on each track are evident, but they still sound unique to Bowie. I'm still not a fan of Bowie's voice, but this is an impressively made album. My favorite tracks were "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "Andy Warhol".
Enjoyable but more purposefully weird.
Not my favorite album from Bowie but it's still Bowie. Album is still a solid one for someone else
"Changes" and "Queen Bitch" are my top two, but I am not sure how much I really like Bowie overall - still getting used to what he's all about. I really liked "Heroes" (the song and album) but not sure on this earlier work. It's starting to become the Bowie of legend but not quite there yet IMO. I enjoyed the listen but nothing that blew me away.
What is it about David Bowie? I like all his albums. they are not what I call up when I want to listen to music though. I do love the song Changes.
Лучшая песня - Andy Warhol Худшая - Fill your heart. Чип чип чип и дейл под гитарку.
Not my style but I see why people love it Bowie is an icon for all
This was fine 🤷🏻♀️
This is the third Bowie album and they start to sound similar to me. I guess they are pretty visionary, but i wouldn't choose to listen to it
This album loses focus too quick and feels too slow, but it does have a couple incredible standouts.
It’s Bowie, so it’s good. Not my favorite album by him though.
it's very jingle-jangley and a little *kooky* (this is an oblique reference to the song, "Kooks", included in the album). i don't even have any particular criticism, its just a very neat and rewarding listenthrough. this david bowie guy is pretty good. my favorite song is probably Quicksand, although the beat drop in Oh! You Pretty Things is a great tonesetter, and Andy Warhol is also pretty sick
3.5
Love Bowie but this felt disjointed
Pretty good, but nothing stood out. Sort of bland but sounds good.
Ch ch ch ch changeeeees
Some gems for sure. Didn't keep me for the whole album but loved the incredible singles
Rather enjoyable album, versatile topics and cheerful tones; but I think I prefer a more gloomy Bowie from the later years 😁
Easy to like. Interesting and fun songwriting by Bowie. Classic Pop Instrumentation with some Jazz and Rock influence. A couple of interesting (sometimes questionable) panning choices. Some very nice acoustic guitar tones throughout.
As a hardcore Bowie fan, I've always found this to be his most overrated album. With the exception of "Life On Mars?" this mostly feels schmaltzy and inauthentic, like Bowie doesn't know if he wants to be Elton John, Bob Dylan, or Lou Reed, and settles for an uninteresting combination of the three. The strings bring a sense of cheesiness to most of the songs that they're on, and others like "Fill Your Heart" are just bad on their own. This is one of the few Bowie albums I don't own, and I don't think I'll ever buy a copy. It makes sense that the one other album where he takes a similar approach, 1999's 'hours...', is another one of my least favorites of his. If this were another band it would be one of their better albums, but I expect more from Bowie.
Standouts: Changes - Yooo from shrek 2 Life on Mars Quicksand Queen Bitch Crazy how many songs I know from this. I appreciate this style of vocals more that I did from ziggy stardust. In life on mars his vocals keeping up with the instruments when the both hit their stride is very impressive and makes the whole section feel magical. The mixing is very clear which makes every track feel distinct with how different the instruments are in each. Bowie saying Bob Dylan can't sing during "A song for Bob Dylan" almost moved this album to a 4. High 3
Pleasant enough.
Probably listen on a road trip but not a daily basis. Life on mars is my favorite
Love Bowiee
5/10 I only really liked two songs.
idk
There are some really iconic songs on this one and that really drove up the interest in it for me. However, outside of that I’ve never been a huge Bowie fan, and the lesser known parts of this album didn’t really change that for me.
простой такой альбом, спокойный
I really want to love Bowie and though I can really enjoy some of his music, I just can't get behind a lot of it. I hadn't listened to this album before and I hoped it would blow me away and get me into his music but it didn't do that. It had it's great moments, I was surprised to hear such beautiful piano in parts, but I don't feel like it left much of an impact on me. Two standout songs for me were Life on Mars and Song For Bob Dylan
I just don't get it. I don't think Bowie's that bad, but I guess I don't see what every one else sees in his music. 3/5
Strong start, bit week in the middle last few song where ok
Great intro to David Bowie aside from his classically famous songs. Love to explore more of his discography especially listening to Heroes from Stranger Things' finale. I was smiling while listening to this album. It sounds like he's talking about his life and friends(?) Fave song: changes
I really love parts of this album while other parts are either too experimental or hint at what Bowie would do later to greater effect. This is still a very solid album by one of the most important artists in popular music.
Pretty good
1st listen: It's lowkey a good album. Songs are the same vibe and I like them, even tho I wouldn't listen to them on a daily. The song I really liked was "Andy Warhol". The intro was really fun and the song too. I think I liked "The Bewlay Brothers" the least. 2nd listen: I really liked "Changes", it lowkey reminds me of Big Mouth lol. "Kooks" and "Quicksand" also stuck out to me. All the songs are good, even tho I wasn't that concentrated on listening. Overall, a very good album. It has a slow but also special vibe to it. Some songs are kinda boring (or I just didn't listen to them well), but others are really good. Probably will listen again.
First listen was a little bland. Seemed better on the second go. I've never quite clicked with Mr. Bowie. Respect, just never loved his stuff. I listened to it again a 3rd time and it started to click. Definitely will give it another listen. Maybe it was just too early in the day the first time, Bowie is kind of a night artist. 3.5 stars.
not my fave by him
Great songwriting and lyrics, love the more experimental stuff, excited to see what he does next.
I like Changing and Kooks quite a bit! Probably a 6/10 album for me. Also is Mr. Brightside inspired by Queen Bitch by David Bowie??? The song at 2:25 sounds sooo similar🤔
Me gustó, I mean it’s David Bowie not my cup of tea tho.
Heard Changes before and it still holds strong on this record. Life on Mars is what I'm currently on as I type this out and it's the best song I've heard so far. Really well thought out musically and lyrically.
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
fine, two good songs
very upbeat; Beatles reminiscent in sound.
I’ve never totally clicked with Bowie. I’m hoping I can find my in during this project. It’s obviously good and trendsetting, but I must be missing something.
I recognized Life on Mars?
Has some really great tracks, some are so-so.
Some classic Bowie singles mixed with some slightly weird tracks. At least one track with Rod Stewart style and other styles of the time mixed in although I couldn't identify the other artists. Musically a pretty good album with more of the classic Bowie vocals that I recognise than earlier albums.
I felt like it wandered a little into the art pop side of his catalog, songs were good and lyrics too. There are heavier songs like Queen Bitch, but also instrumental passages that makes you feel like you're floating in space. It's a mixed album, but fun nonetheless.
Ok
Just how I remembered <3 Oh! you pretty things brings me back
very cool, first david bowie album and i like him, i slightly see the hype. i like his sound especially the beawley brothers or however u spell it.
Oh, fuck off…more David Bowie? I’m really starting to lose what affection I had for him solely because it seems like I can’t go 4 days without another David Bowie or Neil Young record. They ought to call this 1001 Bowie and Young Records You Have To Listen To Before You Die, because it feels like there are 1001 of them. At least this is one of his more approachable records. But still, I’m learning that Bowie can sometimes write a solid chorus, but it’s usually a slog to get there through the verses. I dunno. This project is teaching me that I’m not really much of a David Bowie fan. 3/5
Bowie is so boring. It's just so... Uninteresting. It's crazy to me that people call this some of the best music ever.
Tää oli ihan ok, tiesin ainoastaan hittibiisin Changes ja Life On Mars? Muuten aika tasapaksua tavaraa.
Album was ok but was probably a little groundbreaking for its original sound in 1971. Frankly, DB has at least 2 or 3 better albums than this one.
Okay, this is obviously a cut above most albums here. I mean, it's David Bowie! It does sound great, and it's also one of the rare occasions where its influence on later artists is actually clearly seen -- it really hit me when I recognized the riff on Andy Warhol from Metallica's Master of Puppets, of all songs. With all of that said... None of this strikes me as music that I'd feel like returning to. I respect it a lot but it doesn't grab me like even other Bowie albums have. Sorry! Standouts: Life on Mars? • Kooks • Quicksand • Fill Your Heart
I listened to it while doing work and even tho its a bit of a wierd sound for me, i enjoyed it!! Appart from the other reviews that mention "changes" and "Oh! You Pretty Things" i actually enjoyed the most "The Bewlay Brothers"! Idk why, the others absolutely slap too ofc but yeah! Relisten some of these days where ur feeling like you have a good day but you cant quite reach happiness
Life on Mars is a great track but also Jian Ghomeshi loves that song so good reminder that youre never as good as person as you think you are.
Sure, David Bowie. Another musician that I should probably like more than I do. Weirdly this guy has always struck me as a performance artist—or entity—who happens to make music, which makes the actual songs kind of irrelevant. That's a stupid understanding of him and his career, I'm aware.
Ch-ch-ch-changes….great start to the album. 3.5 stars
Fav was kooks
I mean, I know it's a classic but David Bowie is not my favorite.
2.5 out of 5 stars I'm not a big Bowie fan, Changes is the obvious standout on this album. I did enjoy Andy Warhol a bit. I'm glad I listened, but I won't listen again.
Eh, not what I was expecting from my limited exposure to Bowie. I’ll have to give it another listen or two.
I did enjoy this a fair bit - some really strong highlights and it is genuinely expansive and tries a bunch of styles. I found that this made it a bit less cohesive and I didn't enjoy it as much but I understand that others could argue that this is the greatest strength of the record. I can imagine listening to this in 1971 (?) and being very excited for what Bowie will do next
Fav song: Life on Mars? I love David Bowie. This one's got some BANGERS but it's also just a biiiiit too polite sounding. Crazy that just one year later we got the spiders from mars!!!
Start was good and then it went meh
OK, starts good but slopes off
This album is the perfect example of David Bowie, some of it is great, some not so much.
Not my favourite Bowie album, I must admit. It was mostly a bit too weird and "out there". "Life on Mars" and "Changes" are the only two tracks that I really quite enjoyed... Oh! and the song for Bob Dylan is pretty good too.
It's kind of amazing how much of Bowie's sound emerges on this album. Furthermore, how much of his future work is hinted at here. Hunky Dory may be the first truly good Bowie album. Then again, there are songs like "Kooks" and "Fill Your Heart" that feel like a hangover from past album cycles. A great effort, I'm just not that into the 70's sounds the songwriting tends to fall into. Listened to while stoned and chilling in bed between the hours of 9:30-10:30 on a Sunday in May
I'm in general not a Bowie fan. This album didn't do it for me
Forgot that Metallica used the riff of 'Warhol' in 'Master of Puppets' bc Cliff loved Bowie. And I don't know if I'd ever heard the actual version of 'Life on Mars' just the Portuguese cover from The Life Aquatic. Bowie was definitely reading his Nietzsche when he made this. 'Song for Dylan' nails Dylan to a T.
a classic
Better than the first Bowie one I listened to. Still not crazy about it but there are some good vibes. Very different in a good way.
Is there a Bowie album *not* on this list? This one was pretty decent, anyway. Just didn't enjoy the B-side all that much.
Vibes: 3/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 3/5 Emotional Value: 4/5 Storytelling: 3/5 Stand Outs: Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars? Overall Rating: 3.4
I was never a fan of Bowie to begin with, but this is the most forgettable album I’ve heard from him so far. I don’t know what to say. It’s just a nothing burger. It’s not bad by any means, but it didn’t stuck with me at all and left no impression. It’s fine, I guess, but not something I’d want to return to in the future.
I’m definitely more of a Bowie greatest hits kinda guy
I'm more into his weird Berlin era but this one's solid as well
Close to a 4, couple of big hitters on this one ★★★½☆
not my favourite Bowie album but it's got my favourite singles. non-single tracks are a bit boring
While the singles here are masterpieces, I don't think they quite make up for some of the filler tracks here which really break up the flow of the entire thing.
Bowie zum dritten, "life on mars"/"Queen Bitch" wieder das cover so gut, Dorian grey reminiscence? die Musik? c
Nice sort of old-school country rock
Need to relisten once. Wasn't blown away.
I LOVE David Bowie. That doesn't mean I'm not honest with myself when it comes to his albums. Just like most of his catalogue there are 1 or 2 GREAT songs on here and a couple of fantastic sections in other songs that are otherwise good to poor. Very uneven throughout. The great vastly outweighs the bad though because when Bowie is on he's genius.
I have to be in the right mood for Bowie. Some days I love him, others he just sounds irritating. That being said, this is one of my favorite albums of his.
Upbeat, does what it says on the tin.
I can see how this is considered the first great album of Bowie's career, with songs like Changes and Life on Mara front-loading the track list. Everything else her works too, even if to a significantly less degree. It's a pleasant listen but certainly nothing that would come to characterize Bowie's groundbreaking career. But this is just the beginning.
I like Bowie. I appreciate Bowie's genius. I wish I loved Bowie. I don't love Bowie.
7/10 - Classic David Bowie
When this came out I was a sophomore in college, and Bowie was not on my radar much. I did like the song Changes, probably from radio airplay, but I was fairly ignorant (and high) in those days. With today's ears, I think this is a very cohesive and well executed album. Time to dig out the Ziggy stuff, I guess....
Life on mars was great
My preferable Bowie. I had gotten very bored by many of them but I liked this one
there are some classics on this one. i thought Life on Mars was before this. it does have that sound that he would eventually be known for. i can't argue that earlier Bowie is better, but i like it more. Space Oddity, Unwashed..., Memory of a Free Festival, these are where my heart are. but this is where he started to be more out there to see where the limit was, hence the song Changes. there are for sure some good tracks here. the references to Dylan and Warhol are cringe, but it was the time. i am not very familiar with this record, but it does have a great variation of songs. Kooks is fun. 3/5.
I would call myself a Bowie fan but many on this album I hadn’t heard. Changes was the only one I had heard. I don’t think I’m gonna make myself many fans with this review. There are some really good songs on this album but many of them feel very much “not Bowie.” Now let me explain. Some of the simpler songs remind me of Elton John or the Beatles songs like Quicksand which I think might be my least favorite song on the album sounds so much like an Elton John song. Whereas songs like Andy Warhol, which despite the subject of the song being a shitbag is my favorite song on the album. It is so because it starts so strange and continues to be so unabashedly. As someone who knows David Bowie mostly from after this album, to me David Bowie has always sat in an area where his music both instrumentally and lyrically is dense. There is a lot to dissect and enjoy. In my head his voice shines the most with a full sound behind him. He celebrates oddities and weirdos (or at least he always has in my head) and I love him for that. This album by contrast feels like a man that is sitting on a dock before a voyage into the unknown. We gets some glimpses to the future adventures (Andy Warhol, Life on Mars, Changes) but a lot of the songs are quieter or at least simpler reflections on his past and the people that shaped him. (Quicksand, Song for Bob Dylan). At the time I can’t imagine what might have been going through his head but now here in 2025 I want to shout and tell the man that “Keep going! Unmoor yourself from the present and the past.” I would be surprised if this is the last we see of David Bowie on this listen through and I do appreciate the importance of this album for him to become what he became. I just felt myself longing for later Bowie. That’s not this album’s fault but it’s a feeling I can’t shake.
not my favorite bowie overall but life on mars is a classic ofc
Has some of my favorite tracks, and honestly some forgettable ones
Já tinha escutado um trabalho solo dele (Ziggy Stardust), mas não de outra era dele Gostei da experiência, apesar de já conhecer Life On Mars? e talvez já ter escutado Changes, mas a sua participação em Under Pressure ainda é superior
Never really got Bowie in his prime was t until last 20 years that I really listened to him.
Not my favorite Bowie, but it’s still good.
While it has a lot of eccentricities, most of the album didn't make much of a memorable impression on me. Life on Mars is a certified banger, and the back half of the album is better than the first, but most of it passed over me as a pastiche of British, psychedelic rock. It's well made and there are some nice surprises here and there, but certainly not my favorite of Bowie's. The cover however, is a strong 4/5, just iconic Bowie stuff and very stylish.
79% Best: Changes; Life on Mars?; Queen Bitch Must-Hear? Almost. If I were to eliminate a Bowie album for the 1001 (which needs to happen), it would be this. This is only my third Bowie record, but that's the way it stands as of now.
David Bowie is one of those artists that people say you're "supposed" to like. And, I do like some of his songs, but Hunky Dory is take it or leave it for me. It feels like a weird in-between from his early stuff before he started getting into his more main sequence glam rock. And if I'm being really honest, this album is pretty sleepy other than Changes.
Life on Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time. Oh you pretty things similar. The rest is good too but doesn’t connect as much with me
Wouldn't put this on my top five Bowie albums, and I honestly think Changes is a terrible song
It’s not my thing Liked Andy Warhol song And last song 5/10
I just really don't get the Bowie hype. I think this album was fine. It seemed very normal to me for something from 1971; some hits, some duds, and a slightly-grating, high British tenor voice. Maybe the magic is in his later work, but I don't really see it here. Fave songs: - Changes - Life on Mars? - Quicksand - Fill Your Heart - Andy Warhol
Some good, some bad. Not my favorite Bowie tracks, but a listenable album overall.
Cover 5 Really haven't done a deep dive of Bowie. Growing up, my initial impression of any artist was mostly from the radio. Dancing in the Streets (1985 - I was ten) with Mick Jagger was a horrible introduction to Bowie's music. So I never looked further. I don't think this album helped. I do intend to look further, because it's David Bowie and people are like "he's a genius" or whatever. But this was only ok. Nothing particularly awful, but nothing stood out to me either.
Legalzinho
I really try but Bowie clicks differently to me, and this one didn't make it so far up my list
It was fine, I like others better
I think this my favourite Bowie album so far. I'm not a fan though but hearing Changes and Life on Mars was good.
By most standards, this is a masterpiece. By Bowie standards, it's mid.
In theory I should love David Bowie's music. I am a fan of artists reinventing themselves and trying new things. I'm a fan of critic's darlings. I love "weirdness." I have always "tried" to love his music. Unfortunately, I've never really been able to get into it. I can't put my finger on it, other than there is a coldness and detachment I feel when I listen to his songs. There are a few here and there that I really like, but I've never been able to listen to an album of his and truly enjoy it. I am aware that there are quite of a few of his records on this list, and my hope was that I'd have a different experience listening more critically. There are others on the list that I have completely come around on, so I thought it would be the case with Bowie. This is my first album of his that I've been given, so this morning I was both excited and apprehensive. What I came away with after listening is that my original thoughts haven't changed at all. There is talent for sure. There are songs I enjoy more than others, but in the end, I guess I just don't really like his music overall and that's the way it's going to be. I think I have six more to go...
Cool album. Got me familiar with the term art pop. Kind of more ballsy and brave decisions arrangement and composition wise. Interesting chord progressions and production. Not sure if I want to relisten anything from it, song Changes stocked a bit. It could become really dear music to me if I d relisten a lot. Reminded late arctic monkeys, I guess that’s where the inspiration is from. Piano driven tracks but without constant loops spamming the chords progression.
Quite Fringe. Hard for me to personally get through.
This album is pretty lame. I’m giving it three stars on the the strength of Changes, Pretty Things and Life On Mars. Otherwise it’s folky and it doesn’t rock
A fine album. Changes holds up. There are some interesting songs in there, but overall it's kinda dull
This was a fun listen, particularly with "Life on Mars".
Two great songs on here. Not really loving everything else.
7/10
Bowie always interesting. Some of these songs a bit too out there for me.
Ch Ch Changes! Bowie is heavy with the piano. It has that classic Bowie energy, fast paced and energetic. The rest of the band also shines next to the main paino tune. Solid album!
It’s not my cup of tea. I kind of hear influences of what must be the Beatles. It’s very much like Billy Joel in the sense that it reminds me of something that could be in a musical. Haven’t really ever listened to David Bowie and don’t really love his voice. I guess at least I’ve done it. There were a couple songs at the end there that I liked.
So-so early Bowie with a couple of good tracks
Siempre me gustó como cantaba David Bowie
I feel I should have liked this more than I did.
Solid pop album, works today even though it was made 50 years ago. I'm not really into pop or David Bowie, but it's good music. My Rating: 3/5
Very lopsided album in terms of the fluff and bangers. I like Bowie but this feels like another instance where the authors choice to put nearly 10 of his albums on here is more of a hindrance than a highlight.
A bowie album eith some masterpiece singles on it. Arguably his best song, but not much else. 7/10
It's good, don't get me wrong. It's a unique sound and totally different to The Man Who Sold the World and Ziggy Stardust which came out either side of this. But I'm not rating albums on novelty here. Frankly, apart from the two big hits on this album (which don't need to be named) there isn't a lot to grab you here. Multiple listens left me with an appreciation for some of the deep cuts here but between Life on Mars? and Queen Bitch there isn't a great deal here that makes me want to listen to the whole album rather than just the things I like. Highlights: Changes, Life on Mars?, The Bewlay Brothers
some high points - Changes and Kooks - but the mannered vocals become very wearing over the duration of the album
I've never sat down and listened to David Bowie before and I didn't fully know what to expect to be honest. I didn't know how piano based a lot of his song this album would be. A very heavy album in terms of emotion that Bowie was able convey. Not really sure if this is my preferred genre, but was pretty good overall! Favorites: - Life on Mars? - Queen Bitch
Given how strange David Bowie seems, I always envisioned his music being less accessible than it actually is. This was a solid album with a few classics that I recognized on it. I have a feeling there are going to be a bunch of Bowie albums on this list, but I’m okay with that if his others are like this one. Favorite tracks: - Changes - Oh! you Pretty Things - Life on Mars?
Better than the other Bowie album but still not quite 4 star worthy.
Great Bowie album. Changes is good. DB - Gone too soon.
Музыка: 7/10 Разнообразие: 8/10 Тематика и вайб: 7/10 Цепляемость (отдельные песни зашли): 5/10 Реиграбельность (можно ли рандомно врубить на фон): 8/10 Итог: 7.0
It was fine.
idk clasic david bowie. sincer eu nu is un fan masiv al glam rockului. dar unele melodii chiar mi-au placut gen ultima e bun dar not my style
This album has Life on Mars? on it. 'Nuff said. Was familiar with quite a few tracks - Kooks, Changes. I'm not the biggest Bowie person. My favorite of his is the last album he released Blackstar. Love the piano on this. Not as impactful as Ziggy Stardust.
Nice but more of a sign of better things to come.
J’aime Bowie.
At a point in my life now where I can comfortably admit that I am not particularly a Bowie fan. I always thought I was, he has some good songs, but the more of them I hear the more I realise I don't actually care for much of his output. Rarely are they offensively bad, theres a quality to his songwriting that is excellent, but I don't find it gripping at all and so I wonder if maybe its just not to my taste. I will say I actually enjoyed the second half of this LP more than the first, Changes and Life On Mars being two of his singles I do not care for. Everything from Quicksand on I enjoyed a bit more.
I'd never sat and listened to this one before. I can't say it's my favorite Bowie album, but I like it better than some, and I can see where some of my favorite ones came from, now.
Awesome old school rock, fantastic writing.
BEST SONGS: - Oh! You Pretty Things - Life on Mars?
I know many of these songs, but have never listened to the album. There are several all-time classics. Best Songs Changes Life on Mars? Kooks Queen Bitch
Enjoyed the couple of classic hits amidst the sea of fillers
Classic like life on mars sits in a flower bed of meh, kinda Bowie for me.
I still think that David Bowie is a bit overrated. Like he deserves the recognition he has, but I don't know, I don't get it. This is a good album but nothing special.
changes life on mars quicksand
Primer disco de bowie que escucho entero, tiene sus mas y sus menos pero overall me ha gustado
a lot more subdued than expected, but still catchy.
I understand that Bowie pushed boundaries here but it’s too artsy to be enjoyable. Even life on mars which I believe is the hit of this album was too experimental for me to enjoy it. I looked forward to listen to listening to Bowie. I hope there’ll be better albums of his on this list.
Never was the biggest fan of 'Changes' which opens this album. Not sure why, it just isn't my favourite of Bowie's popular tracks. I find the chorus more annoying than catchy. 'Life On Mars?' however, I think is brilliant and easily one of his best. It builds up really nicely, to a fantastic chorus before starting all over again but this time the drums stay. 'Oh! You Pretty Things' is a great track which has a better chorus than 'Changes' in my opinion. 'Kooks' is a pleasant if a little bland song. I really liked 'The Bewlay Brothers' a lot though. A really nice ballad "epic" to end the record. A pretty decent, if a little all over the place album. Some hits, some misses, a bit inconsistent.
I enjoyed this David Bowie album
Changes is great, the rest of the album I thought was aight. Even listening to it yesterday, nothing else really stuck out to me and I’m not quite sure what I listened to
I went in with very low expectations based on some previous Bowie albums, but this one was actually pleasant. Still a little weird at some points though, and nothing blew me away as amazing.
First half started off really strong where I thought this could be 4/5 but then back half kinda struggled. Life on mars is maybe my favorite Bowie song.
I feel like I need to give this one a second listen to fully appreciate it. There wasn’t any part that I found boring or that lost my interest, but aside from Changes, there weren’t many stand-out songs. It was really easy to let this one play and enjoy as background music, but nothing blew me away.
A high 3.
With David Bowie, I fall somewhere on the spectrum between "just the hits" and "will dive into the classic albums." I've done the latter, but generally stick to the former. This is one of many in his string of classics, and it's one where I'm happy just to come back for "Changes," "Oh! You Pretty Things," "Life on Mars?," and "Queen Bitch."
Some classics but that's all very much confined to the first half, after which point this loses steam a bit. 3.5*
I always hear about how great David Bowie is, and how he's constantly reinventing himself. The latter is pretty apparent, but I don't think he's necessarily all *that* good at it. For a while, I thought this was the album of his that I liked best, but eventually it turned out that I just liked "Changes" (and also, to a lesser extent, "Kooks"). Somehow, "Life on Mars" is always in contention among Bowie fans to be one of his best songs, but it never felt like anything spectacular to me. Maybe the problem is I just don't like glam rock enough, but this album really never gets above fine.
Nothing stood out for me but it was a pleasant listen.
"Life on mars?" is great, uf course! The rest is mostly filler songs. 3/5
Pretty cool, makes me think of parklife idk why
same as station to station but maybe i like it a bit more? more songs in the album = more songs i knew. maybe i would give this a 3.5 if i could?
3 stars
Pretty good. I feel like thats a lot of david bowie recently
it was ok...
Bowie Album #2 out of 9 Totally fine, I really liked a few songs and the rest were fairly forgettable. Oh! You Pretty Things and Song for Bob Dylan were really good.
A few classic songs, but it's too inconsistent, cute and kooky to fully work as an album
Not my favorite Bowie album, but it's a good one.
It’s no Ziggy Stardust
Some great songs (Bewley Brothers, Queen Bitch, Andy Warhol), some not so great (Eight line Poem) and a song so over played (Life on Mars) I usually skip at when I get the chance.
I'm ashamed to say that I knew a lot of these songs, but didn't realize they were his. But all around, a good time.
Another Bowie album screaming for a remaster, very tinny and hollow overlaying of the different instruments and vocals. Very fun hits, but a lot of skippable tracks. Fun to see Bowie branching into what would become his more iconic style. Top tracks: Changes, Life on Mars?, Queen Bitch
Ordinary Bowie
1. Life on Mars? 2. The Bewlay Brothers 3. Oh! You Pretty Things
Got some interesting things happening on here. I can definitely see why people see Tyler in David Bowie
Sadly, I'm not crazy about this album. Maybe since it's not one that I listened to since it's release date? Can't say if that's the reason or maybe these songs are too lovey and poetic for me. Still love you tho man!!
It's ok. Fave oh! You pretty things
Tri zvjezdice na jedvite jade. Bilo bi 2.5 da može, sigurno. Nevjerovatno kako "najutjecajniji muzičar ikad" nema nikakvog utjecaja na mene. Strašno dosadno iako ne nekvalitetno.
Far fewer hits then I remember but Changes, Life on Mars, and Queen Bitch still rock my world.
I’ve never been the biggest Bowie fan, but this is a very good album, probably his best in my opinion.
This is probably the best David Bowie album I've listened to thus far, and this is the 6th one that has populated on this list. I'm not sure why there needed to be 6, but what do I know, I'm just a common man, not a journalist or editor of a music magazine. I wasn't born with the DNA to better understand this artist. This was enjoyable, but it still isn't enough to push this album past a 3.5/5, and it definitely can't push it past its own boundaries into a 4. Album high marks: "Changes" "Life on Mars?" "Andy Warhol" "Queen Bitch"
Some good verses, choruses, chords and theatrical piano parts, mabey the Art in Art Pop kills it, mabey Bowie's voice is just too whiny sometimes, mabey ch, ch, ch change the annoying parts. Unfortunately this is my review after relistening twice.
The way this album inspired future artists was palpable which was fascinating, but by the end it started to feel a bit same-y. Highs were strong (Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?, Quicksand), but the kooky silly voices in some of the low-lights (Song for Bob Dylan, Fill Your Heart, Andy Warhol) reached a point of "ok I've had enough" pretty quick. A pattern of gentle opening for 45 seconds into full orchestral chorus(?), calm for 45 seconds into full orchestral chorus a second time is sonically pleasant but got a bit boring.
Je m'attendais à pire.
I mean, it was cute but other than a couple hits I don't think Bowie found his stride yet
not my favourite Bowie album but has some songs i like
First time listening to a Tupac album. Very much enjoyed.
I ok with Best of collections with Bowie. Daimond Dogs and perhaps another may be exceptions. Good stuff, not all of it resonates with me.
Notbad
Not one of my go to Bowie’s but certainly had some bangers. Andy Warhol always makes me chuckle.
It feels sacrilegious but this has never been high on my list of David Bowie albums. There's something I can't pinpoint that I'm not crazy about, it could be the pomp and too much theatre for my taste. Other than that, I have similar issues with his voice that I did with Ziggy Stardust, it being more shrill and nasally than how he sounded from the mid 70s onwards. I would normally avoid making such a direct comparison, but I know that I love his voice from around Young Americans onwards and before that I'm not as fond of it. I'm bashing it but this is a good album. I can definitely appreciate that he was trying different things though, as he always did, it just doesnt really resonate with me the same way a lot of his later stuff does 3.5 Highlights: Andy Warhol
I think I like Bowie in theory much more than I actually like the music. Couple of tunes I love, but overall this is just OK for me.
At this point I’m over Bowie man like the first album was good, the second one okay, this one I’m like ugggg. This was one of his earlier albums and less rock and more strange. I understand the reputation now more tbh. I’m probably not giving it a fair rating I’m just done with his ass LOL
Two phenomenal classics, rest is just fine. Struggle with whole Bowie albums
It’s a fine album and definitely a turning point where Bowie really fine-tuned his talents. The clever songwriting, theatrical delivery, and all the Bowie charm people love him for. But as a full listen, it doesn’t really keep me hooked start to finish. Some standout tracks, sure, but overall it feels more like an important piece of music history than something I actually want to throw on and enjoy all the way through.
As a Bowie fan, I realized listening to this album that the only "record" of his I've ever listened to in full is a greatest hits CD we had in the car growing up. It helped me go into this one with a more open mind rather than already knowing it or having some other to compare it to. Perhaps that was the reason, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the album. Definitely some good ones on there, but others that didn't hold me like Bowie normally does. Overall: 3/5
Very good, but I didn't resonate with most of it.
couple bangers, hated it at first but cane around. 3.5/5
Legal
3.5
第一次认真听Bowie的专,还不错,和之前熟悉的Starman之类的区别比较明显。其中有几首不错,不过可能更喜欢Prog一点的。
Doing his full on Anthony Newley voice here. More piano based. I enjoyed it, but not my favorite Bowie.
Hard to be objective when some songs have been heard so many times over the years…rest of the album is okay but maybe a bit more forgettable.
Features the best song Bowie ever wrote, Life on Mars and two other good tracks.
i like this one
3.5/5 stars
Much calmer rock then s2s. Has energetic peaks but uses much more piano. 8 line poem especially is very relaxed - focuses on a mix of calm piano and simple riffs. Relies a lot on piano and acoustic guitar.
Not a big fan of David Bowie
I’ve never been a huge fan of David Bowie. He’s alright, but nothing more. Over and out.
Ah, another album I've ment to listen, but never got around to! I even know a few tracks off this album as it is. Bowies music is often very lyrics centric, which makes for a bit more boring listening experience. The album has 3-5 great songs, but some of the tracks sound so similar to each other, so one would have to be interested in the lyrics and stories they tell to get more out of them. I am not. Rest of the songs are ballads and slow moody songs, which I find very boring and tune out sort of automatically. This is not his best album for me, nor is it the worst, just not that interesting either way. In the context of Mr. Bowies career it seems to be an important one, but since this kind of music in general does not do much for me, well, I don't care for this one either. I'm kind of sad that most pop music is so shite for my ears and brains, I'd like to enjoy all the music, but alas! This is not the case!
I do enjoy some of David Bowie's work, but I wouldn't call myself a David Bowie super fan or anything. So, take what I say with a grain of salt. The most notable and popular song on this album is "Changes," but the rest of the music is something I think mostly David Bowie fans would enjoy, if that makes sense? The music wasn't bad, just not for me. I would still recommend it to others.
