Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Very good album, obvi!
The highs on this are very high. Life on Mars, Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch. The rest is decent but not that memorable. 4/5
Plenty of classic songs but other Bowie albums I like better
ch ch ch ch chaaaaanges. Pretty good but also very kinda strange
Is there Life On MAAAAAAAAAAARS
bowie est devenu un top parce q'il en était un au début
some real bops throughout and just an enjoyable listen all around
Not my favorite Bowie album, but pretty good.
really enjoyed this - never been a bowie listener, but this is great. The style really changes song to song, but it all feels very BOWIE. I especially loves life on mars. Joyful, weird, fun.
Experimental in a good way, fun piano based rock!
Si es David Bowie pero no por eso se le va a dejar de revisar.
will always love life on mars
Still known to me as the album with Life on mars. Fill your Heart, Andy warhol, and Bewlay Brothers were surprise hits though. Bowie is still best however
Classic Bowie! Lots of songs I'd never heard before, so it's good to listen to it in album form. I can hear the early stylings of future Bowie songs in a lot of these tracks (Queen Bitch = Suffragette City; Life on Mars?>Ziggy Stardust Album, etc.) Highlights: -Changes -Life on Mars? -Queen Bitch
It’s a shame about kooks
I mean, Bowie, right?
Another Bowie album I had only heard bits and pieces of. Changes and Life on Mars are great, ofc. Kooks reminds me of the Beach Boys or something, pop harmonies etc. It does fall off a little bit towards the end for me, but overall pretty good.
It's David Bowie so it's gotta be good. Most of this album is simply good, but there are two songs here that I would say are my favourite songs of his: Changes and Life On Mars. While the album is a 4/5 those two songs are 6/5.
classic Bowie, including some of my favourite hits - C
Classic Bowie. Would recommend to anyone who is not acquainted with his music.
Holy shit! This is the first time I've honestly listened to this album in it's entirety. Awesome album, familiar with maybe 3 songs but that changed today. Fucking Killer Album! RIP Mr. Bowie
So much range, he's got it all. Plenty of obvious hits but Looks is my highlight
false
This was in fact, Hunky Dory.
Great album. Will definitely keep on playlist. Besides the obvious classics some beautiful melodies - especially like Bewlay Brothers. Then there’s Fill your Heart which is wacky. Feel the album would make a great musical. Jen
Kuten Bowiella yleensäkin, hittibiisit ovat aivan timanttia. Kokonaisuutena en oikein saanut otetta tästä levystä, ja suuri osa biiseistä oli aika keskinkertaisia. Toisaalta jos levyn kappaleista melkein puolet on ikivihreitä hittejä niin vaikea antaa alle nelosta.
Pure Bowie !
4.0
solid sound, changes is an absolute jam
Could clearly hear the different instruments, particularly piano. Bowie’s voice is fruity and impossible to mistake. I knew all the songs even though I didn’t recognize the names of all of them.
Good Bowie album. Front loaded with hits, but enjoyed most of it. Not sure I'm that keen on the chugging acoustic guitar that goes through a lot of it, but otherwise liked the songs, arrangements, production and instrumentation.
I liked this more than I thought I would. Thank you David Bowie
Starting off strong.
Very good.
2 of the greatest songs ever, and some other pretty great songs too (Oh! You pretty things, Kooks, Quicksand, Queen Bitch). Probably Bowie’s 4th/5th best.
Changes. Life on mars. Good songs.
Arguably Bowie's best album.
Theatrical in a way that only Bowie could really do. Favorite tracks: "Life on Mars?", "Queen Bitch"
Good one. Not my preferred bowie but I digress
Ok album
not my favorite bowie but it’s still a pretty good album i think andy warhol’s my favorite. the start and end are incredible. i feel it kinda dips in the middle.
Bowie's fourth album has the outstanding "Life On Mars?" as well as about two or three other terrific songs, but the rest is for completists only. The thin, dry sound of this record doesn't help either, and its Bowie's sharp songwriting (and the occasional string section) that allow the better songs on here to bloom despite the arid consitions.
I'm mixed on this album. Some bangers, but a lot of songs that are either meh to me or A Bit Too Much ('Andy Warhol' being a big one). I continue to not understand the Bowie hype. Standout Tracks: Changes, Queen Bitch Rating: 2.5
Mix extraño
Holy crap did I actually just like a Bowie album
Very good album. David was one of the greats.
I liked it but definitely not as good as the other Bowie albums we’ve had on the list so far.
First time I feel like I'm close to "getting" Bowie. Still, I get a feeling like he's out to prove he's the most creative and intelligent person there. The lyrics don't feel genuine, but somewhat pretentious. The first half of the album is four stars, the second half drags along with songs that don't land.
I liked this a lot more than the Beatles, and there were a handful of strong choices, still though, does this qualify as one of the best albums ever? We’re going to have a large sample size, and so I’m going to put this in the middle
This is #day716 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… just two days ago I got Ziggy Stardust, which, of course, I rated a 5, and now another Bowie record. I don't really mind. Except this doesn't quite rank among my favorite works of his. Yes, I know, this is Bowie becoming Bowie, and there are "Changes," "Oh! You Pretty Things," and "Life On Mars?", but... there's also more to come down the road. I'm giving it a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day717.
I wanted to like this more, but just didn't connect with it
Czy my oceniamy te albumy bo są naprawdę dobre, ciekawe, nowatorskie czy po prostu lubimy osobę, która je nagrała? Bo imo poza trzema bangerami to nie jest najlepszy Bowie, i said what i said.
Idk not a huge glam Bowie guy
Good album!
he’s such a weirdo and life on mars is so good. other songs i hate.
Always creative and interesting but not necessarily entertaining all the way through.
I've learned a lot from these albums, about decade trends, genres and certainly my own tastes and thoughts on music in general. None beyond Bowie has challenged me more in that last catagory, I have been putting in the time to figure it out, reading what I can and listening over and over. His vocals still tend to be the weak point for me but the music is always interesting and varied. I'm glad there have been and continue to be artists like him pushing themselves to new levels allowing other people to connect with something complex in a way that only art can do. I wish it connected with me more, maybe it will one day. Queen Bitch and Changes are still both excellent.
Mmmm me gusta al principio
Not my favorite Bowie, but highlighted by a couple great songs it still stands up.
Miss you Dave
Standard Bowie sound. After a few Bowie albums it does get hard to describe them in a new way. Eight Line Poem is very satisfying for some reason. Lyrics convey a lot of feeling and atmosphere in so few words. Life on Mars is obviously a classic track. I like the kooky intro to Andy Warhol. Oh and the guitar slaps too! Queen Bitch is pretty much punk. Album end has weird vocal effects, which is quite appealing. Best track - Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch 3 stars - it's classic Bowie sound, but not much outstanding
"Life on Mars" is really good. I am honestly surprised at my lack of opinion on the rest of this album. I want to like it because my opinion of David Bowie is really high but ultimately I don't strongly like or dislike it. 3/5 probably would not listen to again
On one hand, “Changes” is a classic rock song for the fucking history books. So is “Oh! You Pretty Things,” and “Life On Mars” is life-defining, heartwrenching, one of the best songs ever written. On the other hand, “Kooks” actively kinda sucks, as does “Fill Your Heart.” Also, a lot of these songs don’t add up to nearly as much as the general reception would imply, many of them count more toward what I feel is a presence of dead weight in this album. It’s not that it’s bad, not at all, just… very overrated. 6.6/10
oke
day 6 — Hunky Dory — David Bowie (1971) genre: art pop runtime: 42 min rating: 2.5/5 fav track: life on mars? thoughts: i think i need to listen to more of his music to rlly get a feel for it. life on mars? is prettyy good and overall this wasn’t a waste of time. i think i will revisit it bc some of the songs didn’t click for me on the first listen
Look, I might give this a four in the future, but I really only care about "Life on Mars?".
david bowie half, etwas besser als die anderen (oder ich hatte einfach ein offeneres ohr für david bowie...)
Better than the other one
I mean, this album starts with one of the best Bowie songs of all time. Starts strong, lost me in the middle, but came back in the second half with Queen Bitch. Kind of sounds like a musical soundtrack at times, but in a weirdo way that is so classic Bowie. Overall, a solid early Bowie work, and a good first album of his to listen to all the way through. Favorite tracks: Changes, Queen Bitch
I guess this was kind of the beginning of "PRIME BOWIE"? Some great tracks on here. The lows are kind of low for prime Bowie (such as the novelty tracks for Warhol and Dylan, IMO) but the highs are as high as anything he did.
Some classic Bowie tracks. Overall average album though
It’s a 3/5 because it’s Bowie but I’m not happy about it. Whimsical. Transports me to an earlier time. Not for me but I’m sure someone out there loves this.
Still don't get this album. "Changes" seems miles ahead of the rest of the songs... Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: Changes
06/12 It was fine
I like Bowie a lot but this album is hard carried by 1 great song. Everything besides Changes I can take or leave.
This isn’t my favourite Bowie album. I think this the third of his on this list that I’ve got so far. It is perfectly good for what it is but he went on to make better albums.
A listenable album with some intriguing tracks but overall not one of my favorites of Bowie's
Bowie, almost always good 😃
This is the fourth Bowie album I've gotten in two weeks, two back-to-back. Bowie fatigue is real. Still like Ziggy better.
I knew this album from the two most famous songs off it. Those being 'life on mars?' and 'changes'. However I'm currently listening to the whole thing and it's really cool actually.
Liked some of it quite a bit others got a bit boring but probably need some repeat listens
Has some good tracks but not my favorite Bowie. I should listen to more Bowie.
Middle-of-the-road Bowie album. My problem is that, do we really need to listen to every single Bowie album before we die? I've noticed that there have been lots of examples big, influential British artists that have half a dozen albums on this list. Elvis has one. Nirvana is missing two of four studio albums. Motown is embarrassingly sparsely represented. Feels like a little colonialism.
Saight
Pretty good. And strange.
Oh look. Another Bowie Album... The obsession with him on this list is a bit concerning. This one isn't as bad as the others, and at least has that Changes song that I like.
I've been singing the lyric "Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow" along with Bush's Everything Zen for over 30 years now, and thought it was a perfectly Gavin-esque kind of lyric, and here it was Bowie all along! I also learned today that Elton and David are only 3 months apart in age. Based on this album, it's apparent both of them and the Beatles, are all cut from the same cloth. I'm not much of a fan of any of them, not, for some reason I have far more appreciation for Bowie than I have for those others. Somehow, he just did it better.
Changes - 4 Oh! You Pretty Things - 4 Eight Line Poem - 2 Life on Mars - 4.5 Kooks - 3 Quicksand - 2.5 Fill Your Heart - 2 Andy Warhol - 2.5 Song for Bob Dylan - 3 Queen Bitch - 4 The Bewlay Brothers - 3
A great example of its time. Changes has been played to death of course but the rest, not as familiar, exemplify the directions Bowie would take. Good choice for a 1001 albums.
Quirky, contemplative songs with a flair of showmanship. This is my first real Bowie experience and I don't find myself captivated, but there's some good stuff here and I look forward to more.
Bowie is so talented and such an icon, and what an iconic album! Fav song is ‘Life on Mars?’.
Changes and Bewlay Brothers are great bookends but the rest of this didn’t do much for me
Man I love changes and life on mars but I really didn’t mesh with the rest of the album
album #54 thank you David Bowie for creating Changes so that it could be covered by Butterfly Boucher for Shrek 2. it's a banging album; there is likely to be a Bowie album for everyone - this one is definitely more my speed. that being said, i don't think there needed to be songs on the album dedicated to warhol/reed/dylan - their egos were big enough lol. ꩜ average track rating: 2.9/5 ꩜ favourite track(s): changes, life on mars? ꩜ least favourite track(s): eight line poem, song for bob dylan ꩜ album rating: ★★★☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,035 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 30 (+1 Hunky Dory) ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 11 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 43
Not exactly a masterpiece, although there are great songs here: Changes and Life on Mars? aren't so much songs as icons. Oh you pretty Things, Fill your Heart and Queen Bitch - surely the only song outside of children's television to get away with the phrase "bibbitty bobbetty hat" - are nearly as good. And the deeper cuts - Kooks, the Bewley Brothers and Eight Line Poem - are fine enough. Only Quicksand, Andy Warhol and Song for the Bob Dylan let the side down But as a pointer to what came next this is pretty impressive.
i think that this is a very good record, however i personally didn't find it breathtaking or life-changing. i suppose it might not be completely my style of music, hence i had trouble with resonating with it. i obviously liked "changes" and i also enjoyed "song for bob dylan", i guess due to my passion for his songs haha. i think i could've easily ranked it a 4, if i was being a bit more objective, however for now it's more of a 3.5 if i'm sticking with my genuine feelings. i will also definitely have to come back to it to dive more into the lyricism on here.
Bowie just isn't for me maybe? It's alright, a couple of strong tracks but it's piano led pop rock and doesn't do that much for me.
Not my cup of tea. Did save 6 songs from it to give it another listen
Eh
ANOTHER Bowie Album?!! I think I've had 5 and I'm barely into this project. Here's the deal, I don't get a hard-on for Bowie like so many others do. I think he was an artist of his time and there seems to be a had-to-be there about his music. That said Hunky Dory is probably my favorite of his so far. It cuts a lot of the rock and glam and pares it down a lighter, gentler feel. Changes is undeniably excellent, and Life on Mars might be my most favorite Bowie song. I'll come back to this.
He's got a shitload of albums on this list, and they've been very "hit and miss" with me so far. This one was slightly more hit, there were a few really nice tracks, but still some filler.
I enjoyed this more than the other Bowie albums
The last album before David Bowie got the recognition he deserved. In this album David Bowie shows a lot of creativity in his song writing, starting to incorporate a lot of piano rock, but without achieving the big moments on his following material. While this album is very sweet and catchy, I don't think it has the artists most memorable moments, except for the super catchy "Changes" and the big and epic "Life On Mars?". The rest of the album, while still great, didn't do anything truly special or striking for me. Besides, a problem I have with the album is the volume. Sometimes, it sounds too quite. I get that there are very tranquil parts, but I had to turn the volume up a lot in order to hear anything. I did appreciate a lot the positive energy this project radiates, but I honestly didn't find it super interesting.
6/10 the hits are bangers but I don’t care that much for the rest of it. Forgettable.
chchchchanges
Всегда относился прохладно к этому альбому. Дух первой половины семидесятых в полный рост - и положительные стороны и отрицательные.
30/04/2026 Shock horror, another Bowie album. Granted this has one or two good songs. I'm tired of this man now. He needs to off off... Spotify listeners: 20.5 million
David Bowie is a branch of rock n roll that I just haven’t gone down. I’m still not sure if I want to go down it.
Very good
Wenz: I quite like this album, especially the energy, favourite song is “Changes” Shermz: Its another Bowie album... I prefer this one. "Changes" wasnt too bad :) 3.5/5?
Bowie
Only my second Bowie album so far, I'm sure one week I'll get two of his back to back. Changes, Life on Mars, and Quicksand are gorgeous songs, among Bowie's best which is a big list. There's some cool moments on the rest like Queen Bitch and Any Warhol, but the rest of the album I can take it or leave it. Always taking it on a long road trip of course.
I liked it, but it's not Bowie's best work. Life On Mars? is my favourite track, and shows glimmers of his later era. He's missing something here that he doesn't find until "The Rise and Fall...", but it's still decent. 3/5
Eight of the nine David Bowie albums within my first 296? This seems unlikely... According to ChatGPT less than a 1 in 5000 chance? Great, I am cursed. Anyway, this one is better than some. However, if you are like me and don't like songs that name drop other singers then be warned; there is a song on here where he sings to Robert Zimmerman about Bob Dylan. There is also another, perhaps worse, about Andy Warhol.
Well let's give Bowie another shot... I really didn't like Aladdin Sane. In retrospect it might be one of the records I enjoyed the least of the 100+ records. Bowie just doesn't click with me and that record is often pretty grating. This record isn't as grating and has some pretty nice tunes. The songs flow nicely into eachother and the production is actually really nice. Particularly the string section of Life on Mars is really nice. The following Kooks is also pretty fun and cheerful. If this record was a lemon, I've just squeezed every good drop of juice I could get from it, because after this song it all goes downhill. Quicksand and Fill your heart are just straight up boring. Andy Warhol has a minute long intro only to bait you with a nice guitar riff that leads to just another uninteresting song. By the time we've reached song for Bob Dylan I really want to put on something else. Queen Bitch is alright, but not enough by a long shot to make up for the previous four songs. The Bewlay Brothers is barely a song. It's one minute spoken word with an intermezzo of 30 seconds of song that's actually kinda decent followed again with a minute of spoken word. In the end this records feels very meh. Bowie is certainly capable of making music I enjoy, which makes it all the more enfuriating when he teases that in front of me only to take it away once more. Not everything is made for me and that is fine. However I am not looking forward to the other 7 records on the 1001 list of Bowie. Who knows, perhaps I will find a song or two I will actually like. 5/10
Muy bueno, la primera cancion fue de Shrek 2 asi que excelente
*1971. *Starts off strong with Changes. *Life on Mars is the only other song I know here. *I'm going to give this another listen. I like Bowie, but I always seem to zone out on his albums. RATING - 7/10
Not my favorite Bowie album, but the appeal of the main singles like Changes and Life on Mars? Is undeniable. Looking forward to hearing more Bowie on this list!
3,4/5
alcune canzoni molto belle, come changes e lifes of mars. bello ma non mi è sembrato nulla di incredibile.
Pretty good, I expect Bowie albums to be great. I think my opinion is clouded by my expectations, I will need to relisten in the future.
Pretty good, though honestly for a Bowie album I felt a distinct lack of personality. Still better than most, but not a particularly stunning moment in his discography. 2.7/5 -> 3/5
ok. changes is obnoxious
sounds like music from the early 70s, but also kind of timeless. not something i'd remember or listen to, but is nice...
My usual torment of not being able to really get into Bowie. I'm sure one day he'll click but his voice just grates me a bit and I don't really know what he's on about half the time. Changes is one of the greatest songs ever made
remain a bowie denier but maybe if enough come up it'll change, enjoyed this a bit more than I anticipated
3- Stars (7/15)
How many fucking times is Bowie on here?
Bowie Album #6 of.... 9. Ugh. Let's get to it. Overall it was pretty good. Lots of fun songs, some chill vibes. Pretty much just solid across the board, no real duds but no real breakouts. Best song: Kooks
Abit plain
It's nice but it doesn't really give the same vibes I hear from his other songs, maybe I just haven't got used to it since I don't immediately just like a song it happens overtime
You know what, I thought this would be an EASY 4 star but it's actually a 3 star for me. I love David Bowie but this album has 3 absolute bangers and 8 absolutely mid tracks. Life on Mars is one of the best songs of all time, but the album it sits in doesnt fill me with wonder
I'm a sucker for a good piano tune. Many of these tracks feature the piano (at around the time Elton John was getting popular). Guitar features on the other tracks. Two massive hits on the record but with three tracks praising other popular figures of the time (Andy Wahol, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed - but not mentioned Lou by name) I feel it is lyrically clutching at straws a bit, while the music itself is a lot more solid. Tempted to give it a three but ultimately 4 for both of the well know hits. Nah changed my mind again 3.
Average at best
Creat album, bit not really my style, a few songs were to forgetable
more lows than highs
Not Bowie's best, but the hits are undeniable
I like Bowie but wonder how he became so famous.
It's okay. Just okay
Cool, but not my favorite from him.
Some hits but a lot of it sounded the same.
7/10 - It’s a good Bowie album.
1. changes - it was so fun i just wish the production was louder/clearer/more adjusted (??) 2. oh you pretty things - i like the smooth transition into the next song 3.
Muy creativo, muy experimental y muy versátil David
Tough album to rate for me. I don't have any strong connection to the mammoth figure that is David Bowie. His music just didn't click with me, perhaps if I was around when it was released it would have been better. This however is a relatively good Bowie album in my opinion, it is quite enjoyable, especially in the first half of it. Later on he starts losing me a bit, with some of the typical Bowie weirdness which just isn't for me. 3/5
Pretty solid album with some hits.
hunky okay
First half was really good
In my opinion far from Bowie's best work. But its high points show glimpses of the mastery that is to come from him.
Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it.
A consistent album with a cohesive sound, best known for Life on Mars and Changes.
I thought it was a pretty good listen, although I don’t listen to this genre so it was a little rough to get into.
I've just realised, there are NINE David Bowie albums on here. NINE? Fucking hell. I'm of firm belief that nobody should have more than 3 albums on here. Hunky Dory is fine, but imo nothing special. A couple of good songs, like the opener and Queen Bitch, but otherwise it's nothing to write home about.
6/10
This list is doing some work to convince me how much I don't appreciate David Bowie while still allowing me to retain a lot of my lack of appreciation. Life on Mars and Changes are great, the rest pretty forgettable to me.
Not a spectacular Bowie album but a couple of great tunes
Jo det var väl bra. Ett par hits. Strak trea.
6.6/10
Fine listen.
75
Not my favourite Bowie album. Changes is great but the other songs didn't really appeal to me.
There's too much Bowie on this list. Still, this is fine,
Ещё один альбом, темы которого разнообразны и интересны, раскрывают личность автора и позволяют узнать много чего интересного. Но с точки звучания это увы не моё, но разбирать это всё очень любопытно
3+
Another legend.
A solid listen. Was only familiar with Life of Mars before and enjoyed the entire album
Some amazing tunes on here obviously life on mars is goated. Bit distracting that David Bowie has like maybe the worst sounding voice ever
David Bowie is an artist I really like but not really entire albums, instead I listen to individual songs that I like and leave the rest as it sometimes becomes to much of Bowies style at once for me. This album doesn't really change that for me but nevertheless its a good album with extremely great individual songs.
not the best bowie, but still, lots of iconic songs
nao ouvi inteiro mas eh okay tem piores
medio pelo, life on mars, changes y oh you pretty things carrean, es rarisima andy warhol, capaz queen bitch zafa
I've listened to parts of this. Band in high school made me play some of these songs. Favorites: - Changes - Life on Mars? - Quicksand Thoughts: I like David Bowie's music, but I feel it is a bit repetitive sometimes. I would like to hear his voice more than his instrumentals.
Zwei tolle Songs.
I never cared for him, but he certainly is better than a bunch of crap available these days
Good album with poetic songs.
#273/1001. Hi David, it's you again in this list. Yet again you managed to put out an album, which has some classics, some boring songs better forgotten and some quite nice ones I don't remember hearing before. At least there is not too much theatricality. This leaves me in the same position with you as before: I won't be selling the few Bowie albums I own, but I don't have a reason to buy new ones. In another words: I've grown over the phase where you or your music impressed me. Luv, an-ex fan.
It's fine, Bowie singing over some OK 70s pop/alt rock, or something like it. A little hard to pin down. Some decent music and guitar playing.
It was fine, some songs lost me, but Life on Mars? Is great.
Черговий альбом Боуі, чергова трійка від мене.
6.5/10
not my type of music, the first tracks are good the last ones are too alternative
não fez minha brisa
Listened on the way home.
Bowie if Bowie was The Beatles! I like Bowie.
Some ups and downs on this one. I like it more than some of the other Bowie albums I've had on here, but it makes me feel restless and untethered.
too musical theater-y 2.5
I liked this! The second half was more my speed than the first, but there were standout tracks on each half. Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch were my favorites. The lyricism in everything is undeniably amazing, and I love Bowie’s voice. 3 ⭐️
Best song is Changes.
I don’t really connect with this album emotionally at all. Maybe I need to listen to more Bowie, but I feel like I’m missing something that’s obvious to everyone else. Favourite tracks: Life On Mars, Quicksand, The Bewlay Brothers
First time listening to a full Bowie album. Not sure if this is something I'd return to often - it's a bit quaint and jangly, but you can't deny the big songs like "Changes" and "Life on Mars" bring anything other than utter timeless classics.
Entertaining and different than I expected. I've never listened to David Bowie before, so this was a good first impression. I liked a few songs. and appreciated the creativity and experiments that other albums in this time period never had. 7/10
quem diria q o bowie é bom né kkk adorei os vocais
Less cohesive than I was expecting... a few quirky (and not great, TBH) tracks. I guess that's what Ziggy Stardust is for. :-)
I thought this album was fine. I really enjoyed the song Changes, but everything else was kinda just there. I enjoy other Bowie songs more than the ones on this album, but I also wouldn’t be mad about it being played.
The album started of strong but couldn't keep up with itself. Couple good songs followed by a bunch of stinkers.
Some really famous songs on this album that I really like, but wouldn’t listen to the whole album again.
Ibland väldigt bra, nästan allt känns välgjort men inte tillräckligt många låtar som är toppen imo.
Kooks is fun and silly. I forgot about Changes too! It's interesting to hear an earlier work of his, even if it wasn't my favorite overall. 6/10
According to Wikipedia, David Bowie was a fan of Lou Reed and Velvet Underground. He was one of the producers of Reed's Transformer album. Listening to Bowie's Hunky Dory, I could hear the influence. The difference in the sound between Reed and Bowie, is that Bowie's is more cohesive, they all worked together. What Bowie was saying worked.
can never go wrong with bowie
Heard Before? Only "Changes" and "Life on Mars". Notes: - what glorious perfect production. so dry and crisp with perfectly separated instruments. a masterclass. - every single use of background vocals was brilliant. - all the arrangements are well-considered and the songs are lovingly structured even when they lack hooks. - I'm not always much of a lyrics guy but I did notice that "Andy Warhol" was intentionally funny, and "Bob Dylan" was unintentionally much funnier. - this list has an embarrassing lack of several things, especially females and piano. at least we get lots of great piano here. - I much prefer the Tiny Tim version of "Fill Your Heart". - "Brothers Bewlay" was overstuffed and pointless. Verdict: Typical Bowie. Tries a number of new things, succeeds at most of them due to sheer talent and smart collaboration. I can see why people love him. Listen Again? Probably not. Every time I try to get into Bowie I listen to one album a couple of times, and then move on to other things. He could do almost everything well, but I always end up wanting to hear the people that did the same thing better.
Ah fun music, how I’ve missed you There’s some good ones in here, Changes is great and I liked the last 3 songs on the album quite a bit as well. I definitely liked it more than Low. I’d say I was slightly disappointed with this one considering a lot of people have this as a top 50 album of all time and I don’t think I absolutely loved any songs on this one, but every song is above average.
Good stuff, especially after the last 2 days. Definitely listenable, and I would say start-to-finish. Changes is a great Opening Track, but unfortunately also the best and most recognizable song on the album, too. Always thought there was a neat Stevie Wonder vibe to the beginning of that song... Interesting references to Andy Warhol and Bob Dylan, though I didn't pick up the messaging on my morning commute. Really liked Queen Bitch for some reason, even though I thought it had a king of Lou Reed or Velvet Underground feel. Again about Bowie, always the chameleon. Not a 4, closer to 3 1/2.
What stands out about this album is how it showcases several different styles of rock while still maintaining a cohesive sound. The influences on each track are evident, but they still sound unique to Bowie. I'm still not a fan of Bowie's voice, but this is an impressively made album. My favorite tracks were "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "Andy Warhol".
Enjoyable but more purposefully weird.
Not my favorite album from Bowie but it's still Bowie. Album is still a solid one for someone else
"Changes" and "Queen Bitch" are my top two, but I am not sure how much I really like Bowie overall - still getting used to what he's all about. I really liked "Heroes" (the song and album) but not sure on this earlier work. It's starting to become the Bowie of legend but not quite there yet IMO. I enjoyed the listen but nothing that blew me away.
What is it about David Bowie? I like all his albums. they are not what I call up when I want to listen to music though. I do love the song Changes.
Лучшая песня - Andy Warhol Худшая - Fill your heart. Чип чип чип и дейл под гитарку.
Not my style but I see why people love it Bowie is an icon for all
This was fine 🤷🏻♀️
This is the third Bowie album and they start to sound similar to me. I guess they are pretty visionary, but i wouldn't choose to listen to it
This album loses focus too quick and feels too slow, but it does have a couple incredible standouts.
It’s Bowie, so it’s good. Not my favorite album by him though.
it's very jingle-jangley and a little *kooky* (this is an oblique reference to the song, "Kooks", included in the album). i don't even have any particular criticism, its just a very neat and rewarding listenthrough. this david bowie guy is pretty good. my favorite song is probably Quicksand, although the beat drop in Oh! You Pretty Things is a great tonesetter, and Andy Warhol is also pretty sick
3.5
Love Bowie but this felt disjointed
Pretty good, but nothing stood out. Sort of bland but sounds good.
Ch ch ch ch changeeeees
Some gems for sure. Didn't keep me for the whole album but loved the incredible singles
Rather enjoyable album, versatile topics and cheerful tones; but I think I prefer a more gloomy Bowie from the later years 😁
Easy to like. Interesting and fun songwriting by Bowie. Classic Pop Instrumentation with some Jazz and Rock influence. A couple of interesting (sometimes questionable) panning choices. Some very nice acoustic guitar tones throughout.
As a hardcore Bowie fan, I've always found this to be his most overrated album. With the exception of "Life On Mars?" this mostly feels schmaltzy and inauthentic, like Bowie doesn't know if he wants to be Elton John, Bob Dylan, or Lou Reed, and settles for an uninteresting combination of the three. The strings bring a sense of cheesiness to most of the songs that they're on, and others like "Fill Your Heart" are just bad on their own. This is one of the few Bowie albums I don't own, and I don't think I'll ever buy a copy. It makes sense that the one other album where he takes a similar approach, 1999's 'hours...', is another one of my least favorites of his. If this were another band it would be one of their better albums, but I expect more from Bowie.
Standouts: Changes - Yooo from shrek 2 Life on Mars Quicksand Queen Bitch Crazy how many songs I know from this. I appreciate this style of vocals more that I did from ziggy stardust. In life on mars his vocals keeping up with the instruments when the both hit their stride is very impressive and makes the whole section feel magical. The mixing is very clear which makes every track feel distinct with how different the instruments are in each. Bowie saying Bob Dylan can't sing during "A song for Bob Dylan" almost moved this album to a 4. High 3
Pleasant enough.
Probably listen on a road trip but not a daily basis. Life on mars is my favorite
Love Bowiee
5/10 I only really liked two songs.
idk
There are some really iconic songs on this one and that really drove up the interest in it for me. However, outside of that I’ve never been a huge Bowie fan, and the lesser known parts of this album didn’t really change that for me.
простой такой альбом, спокойный
I really want to love Bowie and though I can really enjoy some of his music, I just can't get behind a lot of it. I hadn't listened to this album before and I hoped it would blow me away and get me into his music but it didn't do that. It had it's great moments, I was surprised to hear such beautiful piano in parts, but I don't feel like it left much of an impact on me. Two standout songs for me were Life on Mars and Song For Bob Dylan
I just don't get it. I don't think Bowie's that bad, but I guess I don't see what every one else sees in his music. 3/5
Strong start, bit week in the middle last few song where ok
Great intro to David Bowie aside from his classically famous songs. Love to explore more of his discography especially listening to Heroes from Stranger Things' finale. I was smiling while listening to this album. It sounds like he's talking about his life and friends(?) Fave song: changes
I really love parts of this album while other parts are either too experimental or hint at what Bowie would do later to greater effect. This is still a very solid album by one of the most important artists in popular music.
Pretty good
1st listen: It's lowkey a good album. Songs are the same vibe and I like them, even tho I wouldn't listen to them on a daily. The song I really liked was "Andy Warhol". The intro was really fun and the song too. I think I liked "The Bewlay Brothers" the least. 2nd listen: I really liked "Changes", it lowkey reminds me of Big Mouth lol. "Kooks" and "Quicksand" also stuck out to me. All the songs are good, even tho I wasn't that concentrated on listening. Overall, a very good album. It has a slow but also special vibe to it. Some songs are kinda boring (or I just didn't listen to them well), but others are really good. Probably will listen again.
First listen was a little bland. Seemed better on the second go. I've never quite clicked with Mr. Bowie. Respect, just never loved his stuff. I listened to it again a 3rd time and it started to click. Definitely will give it another listen. Maybe it was just too early in the day the first time, Bowie is kind of a night artist. 3.5 stars.
not my fave by him
Great songwriting and lyrics, love the more experimental stuff, excited to see what he does next.
I like Changing and Kooks quite a bit! Probably a 6/10 album for me. Also is Mr. Brightside inspired by Queen Bitch by David Bowie??? The song at 2:25 sounds sooo similar🤔
Me gustó, I mean it’s David Bowie not my cup of tea tho.
Heard Changes before and it still holds strong on this record. Life on Mars is what I'm currently on as I type this out and it's the best song I've heard so far. Really well thought out musically and lyrically.
Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes
fine, two good songs
very upbeat; Beatles reminiscent in sound.
I’ve never totally clicked with Bowie. I’m hoping I can find my in during this project. It’s obviously good and trendsetting, but I must be missing something.
I recognized Life on Mars?
Has some really great tracks, some are so-so.
Some classic Bowie singles mixed with some slightly weird tracks. At least one track with Rod Stewart style and other styles of the time mixed in although I couldn't identify the other artists. Musically a pretty good album with more of the classic Bowie vocals that I recognise than earlier albums.
I felt like it wandered a little into the art pop side of his catalog, songs were good and lyrics too. There are heavier songs like Queen Bitch, but also instrumental passages that makes you feel like you're floating in space. It's a mixed album, but fun nonetheless.
Ok
Just how I remembered <3 Oh! you pretty things brings me back
very cool, first david bowie album and i like him, i slightly see the hype. i like his sound especially the beawley brothers or however u spell it.
Oh, fuck off…more David Bowie? I’m really starting to lose what affection I had for him solely because it seems like I can’t go 4 days without another David Bowie or Neil Young record. They ought to call this 1001 Bowie and Young Records You Have To Listen To Before You Die, because it feels like there are 1001 of them. At least this is one of his more approachable records. But still, I’m learning that Bowie can sometimes write a solid chorus, but it’s usually a slog to get there through the verses. I dunno. This project is teaching me that I’m not really much of a David Bowie fan. 3/5
Bowie is so boring. It's just so... Uninteresting. It's crazy to me that people call this some of the best music ever.
Tää oli ihan ok, tiesin ainoastaan hittibiisin Changes ja Life On Mars? Muuten aika tasapaksua tavaraa.
Album was ok but was probably a little groundbreaking for its original sound in 1971. Frankly, DB has at least 2 or 3 better albums than this one.
Okay, this is obviously a cut above most albums here. I mean, it's David Bowie! It does sound great, and it's also one of the rare occasions where its influence on later artists is actually clearly seen -- it really hit me when I recognized the riff on Andy Warhol from Metallica's Master of Puppets, of all songs. With all of that said... None of this strikes me as music that I'd feel like returning to. I respect it a lot but it doesn't grab me like even other Bowie albums have. Sorry! Standouts: Life on Mars? • Kooks • Quicksand • Fill Your Heart
I listened to it while doing work and even tho its a bit of a wierd sound for me, i enjoyed it!! Appart from the other reviews that mention "changes" and "Oh! You Pretty Things" i actually enjoyed the most "The Bewlay Brothers"! Idk why, the others absolutely slap too ofc but yeah! Relisten some of these days where ur feeling like you have a good day but you cant quite reach happiness
Life on Mars is a great track but also Jian Ghomeshi loves that song so good reminder that youre never as good as person as you think you are.
Sure, David Bowie. Another musician that I should probably like more than I do. Weirdly this guy has always struck me as a performance artist—or entity—who happens to make music, which makes the actual songs kind of irrelevant. That's a stupid understanding of him and his career, I'm aware.
Ch-ch-ch-changes….great start to the album. 3.5 stars
Fav was kooks
I mean, I know it's a classic but David Bowie is not my favorite.
2.5 out of 5 stars I'm not a big Bowie fan, Changes is the obvious standout on this album. I did enjoy Andy Warhol a bit. I'm glad I listened, but I won't listen again.
Eh, not what I was expecting from my limited exposure to Bowie. I’ll have to give it another listen or two.
I did enjoy this a fair bit - some really strong highlights and it is genuinely expansive and tries a bunch of styles. I found that this made it a bit less cohesive and I didn't enjoy it as much but I understand that others could argue that this is the greatest strength of the record. I can imagine listening to this in 1971 (?) and being very excited for what Bowie will do next
Fav song: Life on Mars? I love David Bowie. This one's got some BANGERS but it's also just a biiiiit too polite sounding. Crazy that just one year later we got the spiders from mars!!!
Start was good and then it went meh
OK, starts good but slopes off
This album is the perfect example of David Bowie, some of it is great, some not so much.
Not my favourite Bowie album, I must admit. It was mostly a bit too weird and "out there". "Life on Mars" and "Changes" are the only two tracks that I really quite enjoyed... Oh! and the song for Bob Dylan is pretty good too.
It's kind of amazing how much of Bowie's sound emerges on this album. Furthermore, how much of his future work is hinted at here. Hunky Dory may be the first truly good Bowie album. Then again, there are songs like "Kooks" and "Fill Your Heart" that feel like a hangover from past album cycles. A great effort, I'm just not that into the 70's sounds the songwriting tends to fall into. Listened to while stoned and chilling in bed between the hours of 9:30-10:30 on a Sunday in May
I'm in general not a Bowie fan. This album didn't do it for me
Forgot that Metallica used the riff of 'Warhol' in 'Master of Puppets' bc Cliff loved Bowie. And I don't know if I'd ever heard the actual version of 'Life on Mars' just the Portuguese cover from The Life Aquatic. Bowie was definitely reading his Nietzsche when he made this. 'Song for Dylan' nails Dylan to a T.
a classic
Better than the first Bowie one I listened to. Still not crazy about it but there are some good vibes. Very different in a good way.
Is there a Bowie album *not* on this list? This one was pretty decent, anyway. Just didn't enjoy the B-side all that much.
Vibes: 3/5 Instruments: 4/5 Production: 3/5 Emotional Value: 4/5 Storytelling: 3/5 Stand Outs: Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars? Overall Rating: 3.4
I was never a fan of Bowie to begin with, but this is the most forgettable album I’ve heard from him so far. I don’t know what to say. It’s just a nothing burger. It’s not bad by any means, but it didn’t stuck with me at all and left no impression. It’s fine, I guess, but not something I’d want to return to in the future.
I’m definitely more of a Bowie greatest hits kinda guy
I'm more into his weird Berlin era but this one's solid as well
Close to a 4, couple of big hitters on this one ★★★½☆
not my favourite Bowie album but it's got my favourite singles. non-single tracks are a bit boring
While the singles here are masterpieces, I don't think they quite make up for some of the filler tracks here which really break up the flow of the entire thing.
Bowie zum dritten, "life on mars"/"Queen Bitch" wieder das cover so gut, Dorian grey reminiscence? die Musik? c
Nice sort of old-school country rock
Need to relisten once. Wasn't blown away.
I LOVE David Bowie. That doesn't mean I'm not honest with myself when it comes to his albums. Just like most of his catalogue there are 1 or 2 GREAT songs on here and a couple of fantastic sections in other songs that are otherwise good to poor. Very uneven throughout. The great vastly outweighs the bad though because when Bowie is on he's genius.
I have to be in the right mood for Bowie. Some days I love him, others he just sounds irritating. That being said, this is one of my favorite albums of his.
Upbeat, does what it says on the tin.
I can see how this is considered the first great album of Bowie's career, with songs like Changes and Life on Mara front-loading the track list. Everything else her works too, even if to a significantly less degree. It's a pleasant listen but certainly nothing that would come to characterize Bowie's groundbreaking career. But this is just the beginning.
I like Bowie. I appreciate Bowie's genius. I wish I loved Bowie. I don't love Bowie.
7/10 - Classic David Bowie
When this came out I was a sophomore in college, and Bowie was not on my radar much. I did like the song Changes, probably from radio airplay, but I was fairly ignorant (and high) in those days. With today's ears, I think this is a very cohesive and well executed album. Time to dig out the Ziggy stuff, I guess....
