- First and foremost: fantastic album art - There are several sounds in here that I think of as quintessentially 80s, so this was surely ahead of its time - Flips between quirky tunes that I enjoy (Birdland, The Juggler) and that brand of aimless jazz-funk muzak that does nothing for me - Very 'Mario Kart menu music' 2.5

Wicked jazz fusion album. Super experimental and fun, lots of different influences from world music, jazz and funk coming through. The technical skill of all of the band members gets highlighted on this record; the drums, horns, keys, guitar, bass all have their moments in the spotlight throughout. Heavy Weather pushed the boundaries of a traditional sounding record at the time, and helped to evolve jazz and prog rock through this period. Fave tracks: Birdland, Havona

As the originator of Birdland, this album definitely deserves a place on the list. Probably one of the most recent songs to make it in the Real Book, writing a jazz standard in 1977 is a feat in itself. Taking a step back from that, I find a lot of the other music on this album to be kind of boring. It's a little too soft-jazz/elevator muzak for me. I think it's the sax player. I can get behind all the sections where the keys, drums and bass are laying down some sick grooves, then the horn comes in and I just check out. I also don't get Rumba Mama, one live rumba track right in the middle of the album? Seems out of place to me, and throws me out of the groove. Fav tracks: Birdland, Harlequin, Havona

Eeepinen levynkansi ja konsepti on houkutteleva, mutta lopulta oli vähän pettymys. Jotenki se bassokitarasaundi jazz fusion jutuissa ei vaan nappaa. Ehkä kuitenkin tarpeeks mielenkiintosta settiä että ansaitsee kolmosen kakkosen sijaan.

Höh, Birdland on kova, joten odotin enemmän. Tuntuu fuusiolevyjen perisynniltä, että on mahdollisesti pari bängeriä, mutta muuten tosi latteaa tiluttelua. Toimii kyllä, kun kerää suosikkibiisit soittolistalle.

"Heavy Weather" is a great example of a jazz fusion record that has such a good vibe that it's no wonder why it's one of the most successful and acclaimed records of the genre. The opener, "Birdland", has Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius mixing piano and fretless bass as the signiture sound of the band. Joined by Wayne Shorter, Alex Acuña and Manolo Badrena, what you have is a dream team of jazz, and songs like "Teen Town" and "Palladíum" are unforgetable classics of the style.

Very cool jazz album that I had almost forgotten about.

Felt like a slightly more modern miles Davis album. Very nice ambient jazz type music and such. Also I found out that the endtroducing album could be called trip hop and I’m just noting that here

I'm not a fan of jazz fusion. My expectations were low but they weren't exceeded. To be fair, Birdland is joyous, but to my ears the rest of it sounded like the soundtrack to 70s soft porn, all played in the key of Kenny G.

I admit I have my own shameful, less-than-stellar background playing trumpet in high school band - jazz/wind/orchestra/cumbia. I simply set down my instrument and walked away from it one day in the middle of college and acknowledged I would never have the drive or talent to gain respectable skill, nor did the world need any more half-assed, schmalzy brass bands. Listening to this record triggered me to remember those days - to feel that same horrible embarrassment that one encounters lying awake, in the dark, in bed, late at night, recalling one’s foibles. On the other hand, hearing this helped me clearly sense, with retrospect, that it was a good move for me. Although the players are pretty good and, for the time, the arrangements must have been pretty exhilarating… I found it more nerve-grating than anything, especially with the soprano sax.

03/10/2022 Not at all the jazz that I expected it to be. This is so energetic and funky as hell. Really fun album!

I am struggling to work out the point of this album. I accept that the musicians involved are talented, in the sense that they can play their instruments properly. But to what end? I've reached out to a mate who's more into this, and I think I have concluded that I hear this as the curdling of jazz fusion. I don't find it fun, nor interesting, nor that exploratory. Yes, I can understand that maybe (and I think it's questionable) that I'm judging from hindsight. But large parts are insufferable, large parts are boring, several are both, and the occasional glint of quality, where the talent actually finds a handhold, only reminds me that I'd've preferred a much different direction. Maybe I'd be more generous in a different state of mind, but I'm wondering what state I'd be in. Actually, I'll relent. I can accept that I wrote the preceding paragraph while grumpy. I subsequently relistened, and while I still don't really like it, it's not an overturned bus of an album. It's just from the iffy end of fusion jazz. God, this reviewing malarkey's trickier than it seems.

Fun and jazzy- low to mid 2

Quel bonheur d'avoir affaire à de vrais professionnels. Les prévisions sont ici données à quinze jours, avec une précision étonnante pour les avoir vérifiées la semaine qui a suivi. Le featuring avec Catherine Laborde et Louis Bodin est sans doute le morceau le plus impressionnant. On y voit Weather Report gesticuler devant un fond vert sur lequel est projeté une carte de l'hexagone. Pendant trois minutes, chaque ville ou région sera impeccablement désignée par les index des différents membres. L'outro conclut l'album en beauté avec un « demain nous fêterons les Célestins » extrêmement satisfaisant.

Je tiens a remercier chaudement toute l'équipe de Weather Report, grâce à qui j'ai pu profiter plusieurs fois pleinement profiter de mes vacances. Grâce à une prévision météo à 7 jours des plus précises, j'ai pu amménager mon emploi du temps lors de visites de plusieurs pays, afin d'éviter le mauvais temps. En lançant l'album d'aujourd'hui, j'ai également pu réamménager mon planning de la semaine, me décidant à annuler ma sortie à vélo prévue pour jeudi, grâce à l'annonce d'une perturbation sur tout le nord de la Suisse alémanique lors de la piste 5 de l'album. Encore une fois, un grand merci à Weather Report.

"Jazz Odyssey." That was the answer offered by Spinal Tap bassist when the band found themselves short of a guitar player. The result was a hilarious mix of well-intentioned attempts at virtuosity and well-pissed fans. This time though, a Spinal Tap fan was not giving a disapproving thumbs-down to a vision quest of jazz and psychedelia. Weather Report featured Jaco Pastorius, the man who was oft deemed the Hendrix of bass, and Heavy Weather is chock full of reasons why and how he earned that title. Melodic one moment, and tastefully dissonant the next, with a good amount of percussivity, Pastorius managed to display his range while still playing well with others. Tracks like Harlequin gave free reign to the sax, piano and keyboards (?) all laying atop snaking basslines that were melodic in their own right. If the first listen was a monolithic odyssey, the second run on this record allowed for this writer to be introduced to each track as individual works, whether it was the frenetic, tambourine-driven Birdland or the contemplative Rumba on side-B, this record proves to be one that keeps on giving. There will be something new to take away from each listen, from each instrument. I can't wait to do this a third time.

It is an entire instrumental album. It is best described a synthesized jazz. It was just ok. The first song on the album sounded somewhat familiar but I can't place it.

As soon as I saw the album cover I knew we would be in for a treat. Glad to see I was right in that regard! A very interesting jazz type of fusion album. All the text of Weather Report and Heavy Weather also felt prescient due to the current snow storm outside. This was great music to listen to while working and I'm glad this funky album was on the list!

Here's a wild one. The genre listed on Apple Music is "fusion".....of what? It's jazzy, but also soft-rocky. Is this of the no-man's land that is adult contemporary? Whatever it is, it's quirky and I like it. Had no idea what to expect track to track, that's always fun. Favorite tracks: Birdland, Rumba Mama. Album art: What a cover, this is incredible. Never seen this before, and it stopped me in my tracks. A lightning volcano wearing a giant fedora? This belongs in a museum. 3.5/5

Wow, a very funky album. Mildly to moderately enjoyable. I remember playing Birdland on jazz flute as a kid, which was some unexpected nostalgia...and probably the biggest reason it was my favorite track. All of these songs aren't at what I'd call "legendary" status, but they're all very solid. I certainly understand why the album is on this list. This was very much worth the listen.

Great jazz rock album by Weather Report with the legendary bass guitar player Jaco Pastorius. To quote Wikipedia "Teen Town", a Pastorius composition where his bass takes the lead instrument role, is often considered a highlight of the album and of Pastorius's career."

Turned off by the title and the album cover; upon starting the first track I realized that I was actually very familiar with Zawinul and his Jazz Fusion! I played a lot of this in Jazz Band growing up. I guess that's what I get, judging an album by its cover!

For a bunch of superb musicians who are perfectly in tune, you'd think they'd be able to actually FIND the tune with an hour length album.

Sounds like the incidental music to a 70s cop show. Not offensive, but I just don’t see myself listening to something like the Kojack Official Soundtrack.

Very good fusion jazz. Not all tracks are winners here but overall it's pretty solid.

Yeah quite fun! Reminded me of a demo I had on my childhood keyboard, Sims music when they're at a bar and also 80s crime film. Probs wouldn't listen again, but very interesting music

I feel like I'm writing the exact same review for all the instrumental only albums on this list. Basically this would make decent background music, but not really interested in listening to this album more than once. I'm nearly positive that first song "Birdland" is a theme song from some cheesy 80s tv show, although I can't remember which one, and the internet is no help, but that little bit of nostalgia isn't enough to bump up the overall rating.

This was a nice, chill listen. Some funky beats and enjoyable melodies, but I don't know if I would listen to this for anything but background music. I would definitely have to re-visit, though.

Pretty good. Really great structure and song writing. Excellent musicianship. The songs aren't really my bag, but it's great music to analyze.

Its nothing that special. If you want to listen to this record, but 10 times better, put on Chuck Mangione. 2/5.

one of the first jazz super groups - incredible album, great background music.

4.0 - Sounds like the soundtrack to a 1981 cop comedy, maybe starring Dustin Hoffman and Danny Glover. They have to solve a murder case involving Colombian drug dealers. A wealthy heiress is the love interest. She’s modestly hot in a big-haired 80s way. There’s one sex scene where she’s wearing ridiculous lingerie and we see her tits for half a second. There’s a car chase, a couple explosions, one drunken evening that makes the main character question his choices, finally he cracks the case, the bad guys go to jail, he says goodbye to his partner and the girl. The last scene shows him moving back out West, giving up the cop grind, to work as a ranch hand.

This is awesome. Didn't know about the existence of this band and ended up hearing this album and others multiple times.

I was looking forward to this. I have no idea when it was made and I don’t intend on doing the most basic thing and looking up the year but the 80’s style sax and overall sound doesn’t sit with me. I get it, jazz is free and exciting and can take you places you’d never expect but i can’t find any structure in this at all. Nothing to hang my hat/coat on.

Weather is the apt metaphor. Basslines whirl like winds, melodies build like clouds; cold fronts, warm air pockets. It’s all there. You just put it together.

Real goofball stuff. At least that's what I thought to start. Just a bunch of jazz dorks dorking around with squiggly synths, tumbling horns and Jackson 5 pastiches. "I've just got to this party," I said to myself. "But if that's the vibe I'll tell ya now I ain't leavin' till it's over." But then it lost some of its surprise factor and settled all too comfortably into "atmosphere". I stuck it out with little to no grousing but with my booty unscorched by the hot jazz coals I'd been angling for I kicked it at 10.45pm. C'est la vie. A night that promises a lot but delivers half of it is nothing to sniff at.

An album I would have happily missed

I have to say.....I did not like this one

The synth sounds a bit dated, but this album is a fusion masterpiece featuring acrobatic musicianship and great exploratory passages.

- easy listening, some spicier tracks but overall chilled. - bigband not my thing, solos a little muddy. - Drums are the standout, maybe followed by piano.

It was a pretty good experience. I went in with lower expectations since their music is experimental, but this album surprised me. I liked the piano and rhythms, even if they were jazz rhythms. Favorite Track: Birdland

We appreciated how important this album is, but we likely won’t listen to it again. It sounds like the intro to every 80’s sitcom.

An enjoyable and through and through just very solid jazz fusion album. The consistency in itself stands out compared to most jazz fusion albums even if they never reach some of the insane creative heights of other artists. It's a fun, interesting enough listen. But honestly, not one where i feel entirely drawn to keep diving into time and time again.

Interesting stuff. Prolly not something I’d listen too in my spare time, but kinda groovy nonetheless 🤷🏻‍♂️

Digg album! Likte veldig godt stemningen, minna om en eller annen spill-soundtrack. Fin bakgrunnsmusikk, men ikke noe jeg ville hørt på sånn når som helst. Best sanger: Birdland, Palladium og The Juggler.

Såklart veldig flinke musikere, særlig bassisten. Men jeg blir oppriktig irritert av å høre på dette. Det er noe med hele stemninga som er så cheesy og flåsete. Det albumet jeg har slitt mest med å komme meg gjennom så langt, merkelig nok.

There really isn't too much excitement in an album that almost sounds more like a moods mix than an artistic effort.

Mostly sounds like a jazzy score for an 80s movie. But there's at least one live track, and I hate that.

Not bad smooth jazz, I liked the arrangements, production was very crisp and clean, just didn't feel it was breaking any new ground or pushing the sound beyond things I've heard

This album is great but I don't think it's the best fusion album of all time. That being said, Birdland is a pretty iconic first track (even if I do prefer the Maynard Ferguson version). A Remark You Made is likewise a standout track.I really love Pastorius' tone and it's just an excellent ballad. My other favorite track is the final song Havona, which is a really unique song and a great way to end the album. Overall, I think the production limits the album. Compositionally it's amazing, but some of the songs don't hit quite as hard as they ought to. That being said, there is certainly a reason it's a classic fusion album. Slow, boring and directionless in parts. Really disappointed as was first thing I had absolutely no idea about that’s come up but just left me feeling it was a bit meh.

as predicted, heavy weather rolled in with a high pressure system that almost derailed everything during track one but then it stabilized and provided a nice 68 degree and sunshiny album. I give it Four 1980's Bruce Asbury's

Siento que esto es jazz con algo de drogas. De hecho cuando inició el disco, no supe que esperar, ya después me di cuenta de qué era. Como lo he dicho antes, el jazz aún no logra atraparme, así que el disco lo escuché con poca atención. Sin embargo, sí me gustan las variaciones y que suene animado, muy uptempo (???). "Rumba Mama" está padre por su inclusión de los tambores que se escuchan, "Palladium" porque de repente tiene unos arranques padres, pero yo creo que la que más me gustó sí fue "Birdland". Música como para cena animada o con show, no sé, algo así. 7.5/10

Birdland is cool, and definitely a standout. Definitely reminiscent of a jazzy TV show intro. The rest is a bit blah techo jazzy that seems pretty dated.

Fluid and delightfully arranged. Some very pleasant melodic phrasing. Joe Zawinul's solos are ethereal and vibrant - classy stuff.

I own it. Birdland is a bop but the rest is just fine. The schmaltzy side of fusion just isn't for me.

Awesome accessible start but quickly gets a bit jazzy for me. 4 stars are mostly in the strength of Birdland.

The musicians are phenomenal, but I feel like years of my father watching the Weather Channel have ruined me, preventing me from seeing this as anything but smooth background music. Again, well crafted, I just can't help my brain. Favorite tracks: "Birdland", "Teen Town"

Musically very, very good, just not my style. A little too "funky" for my tastes, but that's a me problem.

Shorter has his characteristic spaciness, and there's other good playing on the record. Overall, though, his straight-ahead work is more rhythmically interesting. The fusion doesn't add anything to that formula as far as my ears are concerned, though it does sound like the band is having a good time. Good as far as instrumental rock goes.
