Buddy cop music
This is bad
There were a couple of interesting tracks on this record, but overall it was pretty rough to get through. Most of the songs were just fine, but a few of them were nearly unbearable. This is the worst even of the jazz I have heard so far in this list.
Wow, no. Sounds like generic music to score a lonely, rainy scene in a 1970s rom com no one remembers. Will Khruangbin sound this dated in 40 years?
Eh twas ok
Never heard of these guys. Turns out it’s another bloody jazz band.
Really fond of Birdland because I played it in college but the rest I was just kind of waiting for it to be over
I know I don’t like jazz and I knew I won’t like this pretty early on in the album. But I guess since this is not the most jazzy jazz album there is, and it sounds coherent, it wasn’t that bad.
Very jazzy
That a nah from be dawg
Helt kurant. Kommer neppe til å høre på igjen.
Tja, heilt OK.
Like a bland compilation of 80s TV themes and background music. Awful.
I didn’t care for this- I don’t really like jazz. It always feels a bit aimless to me. The one track where there were vocals and a rumba beat perked me up, but it was short lived.
I didn’t really get this one, much of it felt like slightly better than average hold music. Perked up a few times but mostly I was not interested.
Not bad just not my thing.
Too much synth, too much sax, this sounds like the soundtrack to a 70s detective show
This works better when they get more into the African-inspired elements. A lot of it you can almost feel decelerating into smooth jazz, which only makes me long all the more for Monk and Davis and Coltrane.
I never put my finger on why this is elevated in any meaningful way. Maybe it just hasn't aged well?
It’s good but i’m not listening to ts on daily basis
Fairly bland, sounded like an album of 70s TV theme tunes.
not really for me
It had its moments, but overall, it didn't feel very inspired.
Forgettable
Harmless but terrible
1.63
I remember hearing Birdland a lot when I was a kid. Though I am not a Jazz aficionado, it doesn’t hold up well for me. In fact, this feels more like Jazz for the easy listening crowd.
This seemed totally fine. I don't know why I need to listen to this before I die. This would be at home in any fancy hotel lobby bar.
Sort of helps understand why this jazz fusion stuff is all over 80s movies that was what people were into it. It clearly has not lasted, no doubt about the skill involved but it does not make for a compelling listen most of the time 2*
I sometimes feel like the only bassist never to have been turned on by Jaco. Respect the artistic craft and ability, but don't love the music it lent itself to (Joni Mitchell albums aside!) and Heavy Weather is a perfect representation of the type of fusion which both bores and annoys me. This is how to suck all the energy and danger out of jazz. A whole album of Rumba Mama with fat bass riffs would have been cool. Perfect for playing Gran Turismo!
Ohhhh I wish I liked this but every song after Birdland just went on and on. I couldn’t finish it. Not a huge jazz guy.
Good but won’t listen again so low rating
Meh.
First of all. SICK album cover
I feel bad rating this poorly but I just don't like jazz.
It was meh...
Wow that was a long 37 minutes! There's something about electronic jazz that rubs me the wrong way and I'm a jazz fan. I think that this was too electric, too slick and too over-produced for me. It's also pretty bland and makes me think of cheesy hold music when you're having to deal with customer service somewhere. I remember this making a big splash back in the day so I tried to like it but it just wasn't going to happen. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now.
Probably a good album for this genre, I just don't like this genre. 2 stars or D.
kept thinking I was either on hold or stuck in an elevator while listening to this
für einmal „anti“-jazz: wenig inspiriertes, wenig inspirierendes gedudel.
Not a bad album by any mean but not my preference. It could be study music but probably something I won't revisit. The drumsand flute (I think) were very pretty to listen to.
This was nice background music, but that also means it was easy to tune out. It’s not bad but it’s just not very interesting either.
I get it, I think, but I don't really enjoy it. The jazz funk bass playing is stellar, the keyboard sonically is annoying. I just can't get excited about this sort of end of the progressive march of jazz. I mean it's fine, but does it excite me the way other jazz albums do? Not really.
I mean, will I ever listen to it again- no. Would I recommend it to anyone- also no. Did I find some of it enjoyable and listenable, yes.
Sure. Production was strong, but there was probably a reason I’d never heard of this group.
I feel bad for the people who live in the city depicted in the cover artwork. The "heavy weather" coming at them includes a volcano erupting, a lightning storm, giant falling leaves, and what seems to be razor-sharp metallic raindrops filling the sky. Not to mention the worst part- a giant fedora descending down upon them (and apparently being the source of the eruption and lightning?). Oh yeah, the music. It was OK if uninspiring. I enjoyed parts of it, but I struggled to stay engaged the whole way through. Instrumental jazz is just not really my thing. The last song was probably my favorite. I think I'd moved past the horror of the giant fedora by that point. Overall: 2/5
No inherent issue with jazz fusion but this just made me feel like I was in my dentists waiting room.
Very easy listening and fun at times. Good jazz.
Felt like I should’ve been watching Colombo throughout.
No real impression left, could well be one song
Eh
Peak waiting room music. 'really just good as background-music albums' always get either a 2 or 3 for me, I'm giving this a 2 because not once did I lovelove what I was listening to.
Too smooth for me I think. I hate to do it but I think it's a 2. High 2 but I don't think I like it.
It was pleasant and there were a couple I liked but I was quite bored by the end. Rating: 2.2
I started this project to discover new music. I can’t tell if it’s showing me I don’t like jazz / fusion or reinforcing my prejudices and likes. This album feels like the soundtrack to a 1970s crime drama. Enjoyable in spots but overall bland and boring - frankly not even suitable for dinner party. I know nothing of the underlying artists. The arrangements are tight and skilled but just not my thing. Doubtful I’d listen again. 2/5
I struggle with jazz. I keep giving it a chance... maybe someday I'll get something I'll vibe with. I'd never heard of Weather Report before. When "Birdland" started, the reference kind of flew over my head, and I thought I might be in for a funk record. Yeah, I know... I did feel these songs were more structured than other jazz albums I've heard, and that did help me find my way through the songs. In the end though, it just didn't stick for me. I appreciate the immense talent on display, but it's just not for me.
The Good: We know what kind of clothes to wear! The Bad: Heavy weather is so undescriptive, could mean anything really… The Ugly: Nobody cares about a weather report in the end… When I saw the name of Jacco appear, well, I started paying a little closer attention as I’ve heard his name plenty of the last decades, however, I’d never listened to any of his music… Now, I wish he would still remain an enigma to me; just a name synonymous with excellence in bass playing… Instead, I had to listen to this shit album. Not my thing. At all. Not hating. Just not understanding. 2* our of respect
Jazz fusion nonsense. I guess it has it's place, but this really did absolutely nothing for me.
Not my style
At first I thought ok groovy, then I thought no, then I got annoyed, then I thought I was stuck on an elevator and then I got really mad. Finally I aacept their creative. Their name and the name of this album are prefect. Heavy weather, just had to push through for clear skies
This ain't for me. It's for someone one, but not me, and that's okay
It started out promising and descended in the tortureous jazz odyssey that I personally despise. I was relieved when it was finished.
Could not finish - just not for me
A few tracks are memorable, but as a whole, I do not know enough music to appreciate their value.
Nice jazzy album. Mix of upbeat and chill/reflective. Birdland is a groove I recognize but didn't know the song/artist. A Remark You Made has a nice guitar (and changes into keys?) solo. First 2 songs are good, rest is nothing special. 2/8 good songs, 25%, 2 stars.
Zippy, colourful jazz with more variety than I expected, but I find it really hard to properly engage with as a genre, it so quickly fades to background trilling and tapping. Could have done with some vocals for my money to help break it up, but appreciate a core component of jazz culture is pure instrumental.
Now I respect the Jazz genre for its wealth of tallent just not sure this is my grove. Grove is probably a good summary of my view of this album as its stuck in one. It resonnates as spunky background music from SHAFT or something but doesnt have that wider apeal to me.
Started off with some game show music, moved into B movie soundtrack with a dash of seventies porno. There was a brief spell of some samba style before some music most suited to a lift in a department store. This must be someone's jam but it isn't mine.
Background music. 2/5
omg stop
4/10
J'aurais voulu apprécier + que ça mais c'était un peu whatever. J'ai écouté en faisant la cuisine 2/5
Cheesy 1970s kitsch
Wallpaper
Not impressed, not my jam, not bad, just either went over my head or is meant to be elevator music, either way, never listening to it again and not moved in any way by it
This is a bit hard for me to grade because it detours at times into holdcore (a term I just invented for the music that plays when you're on hold with customer service) and pretty much any given 10 seconds could be the "welcome back" stinger to a public access talk show. But I liked it well enough. Not something I’m putting on during a road trip or anything but it’s pleasant. Good album art too. And good Jaco Pastorius.
Jazz fusion is cool, but I feel like these albums have like one killer song that you’d hear on an eclectic DJ set, and not much else.
This is REALLY bland. I just don't like this 70s/80s style of parlour music.
This was a real miss for me. I love Wayne Shorter's earlier jazz work so was quite excited to give this a listen, but I thought this was so middle of the road and dull.
Thick heavy jazz interrupted by brain stabbing flutes. Standard hold music performed at the highest level. Quality is a 4, enjoyability is a 1.
A real blast from the past. Jazz Fusion. I found the album a bit boring, although I quite liked the hit single "Birdland" which I remember from the late 70s.
Dreadful.
This is the worst kind of 80s slop jazz that makes me think I don’t like jazz. But I do, but not this
Half elevator music, half Saturday Night Live vibes
Was looking forward to this given my foray into Miles-fusion but ouch Doc, my ears... Sounds a little like if Steely Dan expanded further into the genre, Yacht Jazz ensuing.
Idk much about jazz so in my mind this basically sounds like an album of really long 70s tv show themes. Will I finish this? Sure. Would I make this again? Probably not. Alright, see you tomorrow.
Heavy Weather is overflowing with talent sometimes great talent as in the case of Jaco Pastorrius. It's an exceptionally well played boring jazz fusion album released in 1977 a couple years past the era (late 1960s to the mid 1970s) that the few jazz fusion albums (by the likes of Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, etc.) that I enjoy, sometimes greatly, were released. This album feels like arriving late to a great party that is winding down. There is enough there to tell that it was a night to remember but the snores of the passed-out people just makes you want to leave so you stick around for just over 30 minutes, you make small talk, you nurse some cocktail that you really don't need and you leave. Come Monday morning you won't even remember being there.
Listened to it yesterday and have since forgotten how much I liked/disliked it. Definitely between a 1 and a 2. Let's let it scape a 2 because it initially made me want to watch a bad 80's movie, which to me is a positive.
No more instrumental stuff please.
Today's forecast is bland & pretentious with a chance of hotel lobby.
Jazz-fusion, jazz-rock, whatever you want to call it, just doesn't do much for me.
Funk and international
Damn that’s smooth. And a little sleepy.
Meh
Not my kind of music
This is, literally and figuratively, a load of soft jazz.
le colonne sonore dei film anni 80..
Glad I listened to it, but the involvement of synthesizers and other electronic sounds was just too much to rate this any higher. I also don't think I'd want to listen to it again, but there were some parts I really liked. Overall liked it more than I thought I would. Jaco could sure play that thing though.
Not too bad. I kind of enjoyed it, but it's definitely not my favorite kind of music.
4/10… jazz fusion
A bit bland for me. This album gets recommended a lot for people who like Zappa, but it’s just plain jazz rock.
Un album dégoulinant de cuivres lyriques et de percussions pseudo-jazz qui m’a rappelé de la musique d’ascenseur ou des génériques de séries télévisées des années 1980
Now that’s what I call 70’s b film jazz music
Kinda cheesy but ok.
The birth of yacht rock? Maybe. Jazz deconstructed with funk bass lines and a desire to lay low and chill.
Sophisticated elevator music to be used in an 80s erotic thriller.
We could've had the 2 hour long experimental fusion masterpiece Get Up With It by Miles Davis on the list, but instead we get this drudgery. I like this list overall but for too many artists and genres it values commercial succes over actual artistry
this was all instrumental and a bit boring
yeah...
I know there a many sub genres of jazz music... jazz fusion, acid jazz, dixieland, etc.... whichever one this album is is among my least favorite.
It's nice background music but not something that requires active listening, at least not something I'd want to devote active listening.
Nothing looks familiar from the track list. Seems like something I should be into a this point in my life. I was excited for this one. Very robotic, too perfect, and prog-y. No humanity.
4 stars for the bass player, 1 for the rest. Rambling and urgent, but no sense of direction. Sounds like background music for a terrible 80s cop movie.
Nope Reminds me of a theme song for a sitcom
Twiddly jazz... Not bad - not great...
Hmm, there were some moments I could kind of get into, but this felt too much like the Muzak of my childhood.
Kuulostaa ihan hyvältä, helposti nieltävää. Jos jättää livet kuulematta (onko virhe?), mittakin on maltillinen eikä mikään pörise tai vanuta liikaa. Mutta jää haaleaksi kokemukseksi mulla.
With all due respect, it's the most background music, white-people-dinner-party type jazz you can get. Not that it's terrible, it's fine, but not engaging in the slightest.
Felt like I was listening to hold music for an entire album. 2/5
2.5 Great musicianship but too soft jazz/easy listening for me.
Ninguna favorita. Meh. El casi aprobado es por el Bebop. 4.9/10
Boring.
2.5. enjoyed as background noise but wasn't that exciting. still it's jazz i like jazz.
It was okay, but there’s better fusion out there.
Not necessarily bad just not memorable at all. I didn’t even notice when the album ended.
Jazzy, taking a whole journey from low to high energy and everywhere in between. Some of the tracks sound like opening or closing credits music from a 70s sitcom or drama. Even though I generally love jazz, this is not super exciting for me, probably in part since I've never had a ton of fondness for the sounds of the 70s.
3/10 My lack of interest is... 6-11-2025
Much of "Heavy Weather" follows the lead of the opening track: catchy, happy jazz. Maybe some tracks are a little too happy. Maybe others are a little too jazzy. There is no doubting the quality and talent of the players ... but sometimes the album sounded like something "Duke Silver" (from Parks and Recreation) might have put out.
Not really into jam bands. Not bad though
Bland is the best description I can come up with. Forgettable background music. Like other albums before it, if it fades into the background but isn't offensive enough for me to notice, it gets a 2.
This was a bit dull, no playback value at all for me. Honestly I’ve never really been that into jazz, and I know this album isn’t even a real showpiece for the genre. Hopefully when I get further into the list a bit of better jazz comes my way
just kind of boring imho
Kinda like energetic, but lacking like Weather channel music.
I personally didn’t care much for this album. To me, it feels like stereotypical soft, boring jazz you’d hear in a dentist’s waiting room, just dressed up with a touch of world music and progressive elements.
Kinda noodly and not my style. Points for trying
El jazz es complejisimo, y más con sus subgéneros. Ser fan es divertido y difícil y en este caso, es de bostezo
Elevator music. Blah.
Jazzy sound of that particular era, probably fueled a thousand late 70s/early 80s dinner parties where people schmoozed, did cocaine, shared partners, and laughed about new fangled things like how do they set the clock on the VCR?
As I got further into this album the rating dropped lower and lower. Not because the music is bad - I think it's perfectly tolerable as background music in, say, 1985 - this album just feels like it goes on FOREVER with nothing redeemable. I'm sure you could play me this album again in a year and I wouldn't remember a single thing. It's just well-produced, risk-averse, bland late 70s jazz. Certainly not something I MUST listen to before I die, taking the title of this website literally.
Feels like I've been on hold so long I've forgotten why I was phoning
More jazz... it's just not for me.
jazz fusion. Not my thing. There were a couple songs I grooved to, but nah. Not for me.
It just sounds like a series of TV show theme music. And none of it really sounds like weather report music, so that's a bit misleading.
I wish i could listen to this with alexis because man it sure seems like i dont get it. “A remark you made” is fire, and there are some interesting drums here and there, but overall meh. I was ready for this to be over and it’s only 36 minutes.
The album itself is smooth as duck shit. Not a fan of that, even if it’s technically competent. I was going to skip the expanded version, since I wasn’t into the album itself, but the live stuff is GREAT. Easily a 4 for the live stuff. I’m giving it a 2 for the actual album though.
First song sounds like the song you'd hear in an 80's movie while the plucky, irreverent protagonist lead guy is walking through the streets of New York, getting into various amusing hijinks. I'm not crazy about it. The second song is quickly confirming this is an album of music used to set the moods in various 80's movies.
I don't get it? It mostly just felt like background jazzy-pop instrumental music. Furthermore, it just seemed like a random assortment of songs in that vein; I didn't really pick up on an interesting point of view or any kind of "story" here. It wasn't BAD, but I really didn't find it very noteworthy, either. I was intrigued by the album art. I thought it reminded me of some 2000s hipster shit, font and all.
I don’t know how to feel about Jaco Pastorius. On the one hand he played bass on some of Joni Mitchell’s best work. On the other hand, there’s this. I’m not sure how much a joke this is, if at all? If you listen to Vulfpeck who are very conspicuous influenced by this album, in particular Teen Town. However, Vulfpeck clearly is just having fun and often being playful. This however, if they are being playful, are doing so with such sincerity that it comes off as mostly cringe. I agree with the commenter who said it sounds like it should be the score for some buddy cop comedy from the 80s. I understand that this is performed wonderfully, but I just can’t take it seriously.
Not a big fusion jazz fan. I prefer the older Hard Bop, Modal and Free Jazz. However, the bass playing is exceptional. I appreciate Jaco’s contribution here as he was a true innovator in the industry.
Virkelig kedeligt jazz
Its not unlistenable - its just not my thing.
Ok background music
The musical skill can't be denied, but ultimately this just wasn't to my taste.
As a non-jazz fan, this is the kind of music I think of when I say 'I don't like jazz'.
2 - nice live band and trumpet
Might make good study music or a video game soundtrack. Just as its own thing though, I wasn’t particularly captivated. Some of the more Latin feel moments are fun.
I listened to this whole album....I think? Hard to tell when each song sounds the same as the last. No surprises to me that this is a jazz album, my nemesis genre.
Is this considered smooth jazz? Smooth jazz fusion maybe? Regardless I really did not like it, and I liked it much less than any other jazz record I've heard from this list so far. Struggling between a 1 and a 2 for this, but ultimately going with a 2 because I didn't have the same visceral reaction I had towards most of the albums I've rated a 1. Still, I don't need to hear this before I die.
This could be so much funkier and less campy. Basically Disco Jazz. The bass lines are good, and the drumming is proficient, but the themes are boring. This feels like the beginning gs of smooth elevator jazz and that's not gret
Talented musicians, bassist is killing it. I get that it is a popular/was a popular record, I just don’t find it enjoyable to listen to at all. Back half of the album is much more interesting than the first. The electronic instruments are just tedious.
Early 80's American light comedy series...., after the success as a successful Wall Street stockbroker, Chuck Derby becomes a stay at home Dad as his wife Crystal forges a career in the movie business. Follow Chuck, and his washed up Detective buddy Danny as they both stumble their way through a new chaotic and hilarious, but heart-warming lifestyle! That's what I got from this album...that's it! oh, and Chuck drives a Testarossa.
Oh yay Jazz Oh nay Not this jazz
These guys are good at music. It's a shame that they chose to use that talent by playing this cheesy bollocks. How is this the jazz that gets selected for this list?
Background music
Perfectly fine in an elevator or lobby.
Good tones, didn’t manage to listen all the way through as had guests. Enjoyed parts of it. 5/10.
I think this one somehow migrated from the 1,001 Albums to Consider Playing in the Background at Your 1997 Book Release Party at Your Upper West Side Apartment Three Blocks from the Lincoln Center list.
reminds me of Steely Dan, but doesn't hit those highs. Not necessarily my sort of jazz
I liked the first song, got bored after that.
Pretty decent opening track which the rest of the album never quite catches back up to.
It was grand but I don’t think I’ll ever come back to it.
Good start, gets boring
I would not have guessed that this was a jazz album based on the cover art. Unfortunately the cover art is just as bad as the jazz.
I followed Weather Report since the beginning. Earliest albums were hard to like, even though I wanted to. Middle albums were a great mix of (at the time) modern jazz and rock. Truly amazing. This latter period is when the band needed the money and went all commercial on us. This album is like backround rock karoke. Too pop for a jazz rock listener.
War gut für nebenbei beim Arbeiten, aber joa. Würde ich sonst nicht hören
The dawn of smooth jazz? It’s well made for what it is, but what it is is not for me.
It's like the end credits of every late 70's American sitcom got together and started a band.
If someone told me he hated jazz and this was his only reference, I would understand. To me this is jazz fusion of the worst kind. Still some decent chord progressions saves it from a 1
gave me strong Children's Television Workshop // NPR production vibes for something out of the late 90s, especially the first few tracks. fine but definitely not for me. Too many saxes. Just too many saxes.
background music for 70s corporate training videos (respectful)
I liked this more than I feared but still not a lot
Twijfel sterk tussen een 2 en 3. Enerzijds waardeer ik de kunst en skills. Anderzijds doet het weinig met me en ervaar ik het soms als storend. Ga voor een 2.
It's mall jazz. There's nothing special here.
Just don’t love jazz
Pre-listening thoughts: instrumentals. Yay. Post/during listening thoughts: listen I know instrumental music is important, I get why there’s the amount there is on the list, I just don’t like it. I like vocals and lyrics. I find myself without something to latch on to here. This isn’t even like really interesting or experimental jazz, it’s just like the epitome of background music. 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Teen Town Least fav tracks: lukewarm on everything tbh
“Too jazzy?” “It is a bit too jazzy.”
Funky
Not for me. Background music for dinners. But „Rumba mama“ is cool.
I’m not sure what genre this was but it was a little too Jazz influenced for my taste. 2.5/5
Expected more. Most of this sounded pretty cheesy.
Horrendous elevator music (first track Birland), the kind easy listening jazz fusion type stuf that brings me out in a rash. Not for me really, might be the first one star, let's see. Okay it got slightly more tolerable further along, still not really my thing though ⭐⭐ to ⭐⭐⭐
ok
The best parts of this sound like the score from a really badass police procedural from the 70s. The worst parts of this sound like the score from a really bad police procedural from the 70s.
Not today, Weather Report. Not today. Next minute I'll be listening to Kenny G. I won't have and I shan't have it! Competent musicianship. Dull composition. Two stars.
Easy listening
This isnt my jazz jam
Sounds like the theme or transition – sequence music from nearly every show in the 70s.
It was alright but not really my style
Stundtals okej, stundtals påfrestande.
Wallpaper music, I don't even really know anything about jazz and I'm disappointed that this is on here compared to probably better stuff. 3/10
Didn't care for this at all. Felt like I was walking around J.C. Penney in the late 90s.
One hit wonders
80's rom-com theme music
This album is not one of the top 1,001 of all time.
Where are the words. Kinda okay.
This definitely sounds like the theme music to some old-school knockabout police show, and as such it's kind of hard to take seriously. How on earth this made it onto the list I have no idea at all.
How can an album be compelling and also really boring at the same time? 🤔
Side A No. Title 1. "Birdland" 3,1 2. "A Remark You Made" 2,4 3. "Teen Town" 2,2 4. "Harlequin" 1,3 Side B No. Title 1. "Rumba Mamá" 1,3 2. "Palladíum" 1,6 3. "The Juggler" 2,5 4. "Havona" 2,8 Average 2,05
70s jazz fusion. I like it better ar christmas. Not the worst but not my time.
The soundtrack of the daydreamer!
Jazz
I’m pretty sure the first few tracks of this was the soundtrack that Shannon Tweed got her knockers out to every Friday night in the late 90s on Channel 5 This project amazes me - I need an idiots guide as to why some of these albums are on here? 1.5
I’m. Sick. Of. 70s. Shit. 310 albums, 95 of them from the 70s. That’s ridiculous. As to this album, I have no idea what it is. Jazz, I guess? I don't get jazz, and then you add in all the weird 70s organs and I just can't.
Not my taste
Prog jazz? Not anything that I think I’ve ever needed.
There are a couple of good songs on here. Jaco Pastorius really shines. But in general, it’s all just too much
The Weather Report today: disco with some smooth jazz later in the evening.
There are a couple decent tunes here but overall I don't find this type of jazz fusion particularly engaging
Nobody needs that much soprano sax
#312. Meh 2/5: nah
Not my thing. Didn’t enjoy at all.
It is sort of like jazz, but it has some very interesting elements. The album cover itself says a lot. The first song sounds kinda classical but futuristic at the same. It was pretty fun to listen to, even if it is not what I normally would sit and listen to. The second song is a bit more slow and classical sounding but nice. And the rest of them were fun but a bit repetitive. One that was very random but interesting was “rumba mama”, I was NOT expecting it and it got me out of the same thing over and over again
Leppoisa levy, taustalle sopiva. En tuolla kyllä kuitenkaan lentoon päässyt
More jazz 2/5
This aint it, chief
Jazz just doesn't do it for me.
Weather Report is our third instrumental album in a row, and it's also not very good. Sounds like so much cheesy 80s jazz that would soundtrack a shit movie with non-copyright audio. 2.
Pretty dull, soundtrack style with not much to say for itself. I've listened to it twice through whilst working, gone to make myself a coffee, and now cannot remember much about it at all. 2/5.
Some smooth tracks but overall it annoyed the hell out of me. Just can't stand the freestyle stuff.
There is a type of jazz which I do not like, I'm not sure exactly what it is called but this is it. Something about the use of saxophone and the bass and just the general sound rubs me the wrong way. "Birdland" is a classic that even I can see the appeal of, the rest i could leave (and even "Birdland" has better versions I think). Weak 2.
Bland.
This felt like I was forced to read a book that some algorithm told me I would like… Didn’t finish it Not bad at all though, did like it
Sounds like boring restaurant music; not for me.
Kind of a strange album. Not the best. 1.5/5
after track 1 I was slightly excited that I may have discovered a jazz album I didn't hate, nope. This album went downhill fast, very generous 2 stars
Jazz....ugh. It's good jazz, but still, you know, it's JAZZ. Yawn.
You know those 90's daytime show jingles? This was the longform version of those.
To my ears bland and wish washy generic jazz. I get it that the line up is amazing virtuosos but the genre grates to my ears.
This sounds dated, and not in a good way. 2/5
Weather Channel™️ music. Like, literally, background music. There’s nothing here that upsets me, but there’s also nothing here that motivates me to revisit it, or even recommend it. Which is funny, because I’d recommend some of these players’ solo material as more essential than Heavy Weather. The most memorable thing about this is how forgettable it is.
I'm sure many love it but I really didn't
Weather Report went through more drummers than Spinal Tap. No 'bizarre gardening incidents', though.
Technically good, Jaco is cool, but too clean, too smooth.
There's a muzak quality to this. It's nice at times, but...
Aanvankelijk is het As The World Turns achtige jazzmuziek.
I think this type of jazz is just not my thing. I didn’t really even find it enjoyable as background music. I didn’t absolutely hate it, but it just really wasn't it for me.

Meh.
I thought I only knew Birdland, but on listening I realized I've listened to this whole album before. I think only Birdland is really memorable though. Jaco Pastorius' bass playing is next level, but it doesn't translate into an engaging whole for me.
The first song is very fun. The rest is pretty boring
It was good background jazz music.
About as good as when you order medium rare steak and it comes well done
There are some incredible musicians on this, but 70s jazz fusion is not my jam. Weird that this album made the list and not so many other better jazz albums.
Don't get it.
The opening song is so peppy! I don’t like any of the synth sounds they used. So dated it gave me the giggles. I’m not the best judge of jazz, but I have a hard time imagining someone hearing this for the first time in 2024 and thinking, “Now THAT is fresh!” I will acknowledge that there is some adept musicianship on display and being successful as a jazz band for many years is quite an accomplishment. It’s just not for me. 2.5.
You know the canned music your local TV station uses for their dated midmorning news and affairs show? This is that.
Sound like bad Mario Kart demos, first flop jazz album, what a shame.
"Birland", el tema que abre el disco, ejemplifica el jazz accesible y comercial que desde finales de los 70 practricó la banda neoyorquina. Aquí Weather Report deja atrás la improvisación desenfrenada y se arma de coloridos sintetizadores para crear un disco cuidadosamente planificado.

Not bad, but definitely an influence for a lot of early '80s terrible smooth jazz. It sounds like every nonlyrical TV show intro from 1978-1983
I like jazz, but fusion is a mess. The musicians are talented tho
Seems pretty cool for what it is, but I'm not really into instrumental, jazzy-sounding albums.
ponder over your soul patch how your expert musicianship manifests in just the two stars
Just because you are excellent at noodling, and this has a reputation of one of the greatest noodling albums of all time, and the players went onto noodle for other bands and enjoy international noodling careers, does not make it not noodling. That and any fusion saxophone risks tipping into epic sax territory. Two and a quarter, maybe two and a third. But not 2.5.
Booooring 4.5/10
Probably the most elevator music sounding album I’ve ever heard. Fine, just not a very entertaining listen. 4.5/10
Smooth and soulful. It's good but I don't like it.
Background music,😱
The Noodling Incident
Ok music, not something I think I'll listen to again though
Reminded me of family guy
Today’s forecast calls for music I don’t much like.
Nice background music.
Pas grand chose à sauver sur cet album, ennui profond devant tout ce tsing tsing tsing wfllouuum wfllouuum wfllouuum synthétique, à part peut-être "Teen Town", qui met un peu de relief dans un ensemble globalement très plat.
I like Jazz, I like Funk, I like Vulfpeck (just discovered that Dean Town is an homage to Teen Town), but for some reason I don't like this album. Almost every track reminds me of 70/80s sitcom theme songs or sound effects. Maybe it's a musical "too many cooks" situation.
‘Nice!’ Good musicianship
Sorry, it's a no from me
This reminds me of the background music in 80’s movies.
I'm not knowledgeable enough to know how this sits within the jazz canon, and so can only judge on its overall sound, which to my ear hasn't aged well. I like the freedom and funkiness, but don't really enjoy synths and electronica in a jazz context; it feels dated and a bit cheesy. Which is doing a disservice to the musicians' prowess. Sorry.
Give me the jazz. Give me the electricity. Give me the international influences. Didn’t think I’d know any tracks but straight away was grooving around to Birdland. Listen to again - A remark you made
I didn’t really care for this. I found it kind of closed off, inaccessible, and boring. Too bad, because I have liked a lot of the jazz from this list.
They do not heed Miles’ admonition: “Don't worry about playing a lot of notes. Just find one pretty one.”
Fusion jazz for white guys in polyester. Not for me.
# 126 : what? Who? Why? - MORE BORING JAZZ… - Can listen, but not real good, No hits and I had to skip a few tracks to get through it. Nothing stood out and I wouldn't go back to it.
SHICK
Jaco is a mad man.
Sounded to me like a sound track to a 80s or 90s American TV show. And not in a good way.
You know, maybe jazz fusion isn't for me either.
Erm. Kind of a cross between jazz and incidental 70s TV show music. Birdland was a big hit? I can't remember this at all. It almost sounds like the theme tune to Blind Date, but with loads of noodling over it. Oh sweet Jesus, the sax on track 2. Fuck me what is this. This is the sort of music that put me off saxophone for like two decades and stopped me encountering some of the really wonderful stuff the instrument can do when someone attacks it instead of sticking their cock into it. We are heading for a rare 1 from me. The drumming one is good but that is so out of place here, what's it doing, I thought Spotify had fucked up. Obviously the percussion is great throughout, and the musicianship is also very high quality, but just ... No! Palladium comes closest for me, is relatively interesting but that sax is just far too smooth again. Probably going 2 purely because they can really play their instruments.
Not for me
Not my cup of tea at all
Everything sounds like an 80s sitcom intro.
boredom but make it groovy this is just my opinion tho
Jazz fusion album, got tired of it at the end, fine as background music
Birdland is fantastic. The rest didn't do much for me. I think fusion jazz might not be my thing.
