Garned mis
If it wasn’t for “Gigantic” (and the Swell Season’s cover of it), this album of unlistenable noise would warrant only one star. The naked chick on the album cover is way better than anything found inside.
I’m going to be honest; this album really didn’t do it for me. Throughout the album, I was either bored, cringing at the shrieking sounds and bad singing, or just completely questioning why this album was ever even made. Although some guitar solos and riffs were good, it wasn’t enough to save the album. At least it was a short album.
Best thing about this album was it was short.
This is bad!
A little too unpolished- too close to people actually screwing around with recording equipment in their garage for me.
WIMM is the only redeeming song
Andddd another alt album nice (not). Low expectations based on band name/album cover. My favorite part about alt albums is that the sounds engineering is always horrible like it is on this one. Background track is way louder than vocals. Good guitarist. Good guitar on break my body as well. Still too loud. Bullshit vocals. I like something again until they start singing. I’m starting to realize the background tracks are so loud because these alt bands don’t have anyone who can sing well. They put on a goofy dumbass voice and call it alternative. Broken face is the best so far because it sounds like a normal song (aside from the chorus). Gigantic sucks. That’s all. The lyrics just aren’t good or catchy even tho they try really hard to get the bullshit stuck in your head. You can’t just say one word ten times and call it a chorus. Good guitarist solo. More inaudible nonsense to start off Euphrates. Glad they bring it back in after 1 verse (not). Really good guitar on where is my mind. Why a riff. I think I have maybe heard this song? Chorus and vocals are so underwhelming. That guitar is just so good. Drums are way too loud on cactus. More bullshit vocals on Tony’s theme. This song sucks again aside from the guitar. Same thing in golly. Guitar on vamos sounds impressive but idk how hard it is to do that. I like this one when there’s no singing. I’m amazed isn’t bad. I like how it only 2 mins long. I like brick is red as the closer because it’s encapsulated the theme of the album which is great guitar and pretty good drums followed by terrible vocals. If all songs had minimal vocals like this one it’d probably be in the 3/4 star range. But that’s not the case. 1.7 stars. Would’ve been .5 for trying without the guitarist. I feel bad for him he deserved better.
Unfortunate cover, album was so-so and forgettable
Some of it was cool, but didn't excite me that much. Maybe not made for me
bone machine - this kind of music just makes me annoyed with no particular reason for it. it has some 00s pop punk moments thar could work for me but the gaspy choppy style overpowers it. break my body - i'm forgetting about it while listening to it. something against you - the metal screeching sounds?? the hell?? am i supposed to lose my hearing to go through the rest of the album?? broken face - come up with more annoying way to sing the title i bet you (you can't) gigantic - a lady has come to save the day and i applaud her for it. this is very your friend's hot older sister vibes. still, does nothing for me. okay they calmed down by where is my mind and omg it works now. i know what they are doing here and why, which was missing from the previous songs. tony's theme - ralph kaminski called, wants his barking back. there is just something about the beats of this album that make my cortisol levels skyrocket. cool cover.
Ehhh. I mean I get that being a total chaotic mess is kind of the point, but you need to do it right or otherwise you get...a mess. It does nothing for me really.
Rock
The only song i had ever really heard before was “where is my mind?”. I’m trying this thing where I save one song from each album to a playlist, and I found myself struggling to decide which one I was going to pick from this one. I’m sure it’s great for someone, but it’s a no from me.
1. Okay this is literally my kind of music, my kind of genre so if I don't like it then we know it's my fault. This song ended up being forgettable. My bad. 2. Forgettable. Sorry not a lot to say about this one. The bones of the album are definitely up my alley, but it doesn't stick the landing for me. just a lot of noise. 3. Oooh something different. I feel like im at the beach. Nevermind. 4. Yeah whatever. 5. no 6. i like this one. nevermind. 7. Okay, well i stuck around until this one because this is obviously their best one. Funny how one-hit wonders usually live up to their name. It's not like one hit wonders usually have cult followings that live for their deep cuts, no, one-hit wonders are one-hit wonders for a reason, they're only able to catch lightning in a bottle one time. Some artists are blessed by the heavens, they get touched by god many times through their lives, others are lucky they make contact at least once. All i have to say is that being a one hit wonder sounds depressing but you have to ask yourself if that's really worse than being a no hit wonder. (oh, the song's great btw, scary, nefarious, dark, catchy, like you're being confronted by the pixies themselves, the guitar solo after the second chorus is genius, it crescendos perfectly, a tiny moment of levity before they start confronting you again, the little fish line is so juvenile and sweet but the melody on top makes it sound scary. so good, never heard a lyric like that too.) Anyways im giving up. Hopefully one of these days ill actually find an album i like enough to finish. There's still time and i happen to be a woman of endless faith.
Grunge, 90s garage band vibes (not in a bad way). Just not my personal taste.
2.5 - Not bad.
Album is all alt rock with some interesting vocal changes throughout. Just not for me and I can’t really speak on how good it is fairly.
Not my cup of tea honestly. Standout: Gigantic
Most of this album feels like uncoordinated noise. Some of the tracks peek through and show the glimmer of musical talent that no doubt the Pixies possess, but it becomes overshadowed by the sonic wall that most songs offer without any distinction.
Just ok when removed from the cultural hype
A little bit of Pixies is refreshing. A whole album not so much
Yah you know, dissonant Pixies.
Not a huge fan. I recognized one of the songs from tiktok but that's about it. A little whiny
Just not for me I guess
Yo that shit was cheeks…. Jk - appreciate the obvious influence on grunge music.. most of it lacked musicality for my taste but not all of it! Raw and high energy
Could see this album being used for a skate video for sure. Not terrible but not really my theme for the majority of the album. Did end up adding one song from the album “Where is my mind”. 2.5/5
I mean obviously, I know ‘where is my mind?’ Actually don’t mind this song, feel like it does a job. Gigantic is actually pretty good,I like her voice on it. It’s a prolific sound what a lot of other artists have tried to take inspiration off. Oh my golly sounds like a shopping trolley running into a wall, shocking. The rest of the album just seems a mess to me, i feel like they’ve tried to be too much, too different. It’s neither grudge nor indie. Some songs are just so hard to listen to. I like certain sounds, certain riffs, certain bass lines but ultimately it just doesn’t work for me All in all I’ve give it a two jus for the sections of actual brilliance. Youd probably only get me listening to them again if their song came on a playlist. In terms of choosing to listen. It would be a no
Where is my mind an absolute classic of a song everyone knows and loves, but as for the rest of the album it just felt disjointed and thrown together haphazardly. Some songs were more noise than song..! I don't rate this one highly I'm afraid, sorry Pixies lovers! And they influenced Nirvana a hell of a lot, it's just Nirvana refined this into something cooler and more palatable.
Sorry, but I don't know what the f it was. I guess it's just not my thing...
Salvo pelo clube da luta
On paper, I should like this but it didn't click for me. Unlike Nirvana's Nevermind, I didn't feel the emotion in their voices, something I listen out for in albums.
boring
-a lot noisier than expected -I feel like it gave almost a background to Where is My Mind that I didn’t have before since I haven’t head any of the other songs on the album -I don’t know if this will be a re-listen for me though
Standouts Where is my Mind?
2.5 Good but wasn’t great
Not for me
boobies.
2:5
"Where is my mind?" is a standout. Everything else? Not so much.
Just not my vibe. Too grating for me. "Where is My Mind?" is a classic but the rest of it is just noise. Can't take the vocals, despite some sick riffs and cool drums.
i wanna like the pixies...
so where is my mind is the only good song and most popular for a reason
Dissonant, cacophonous, with some of the most annoying guitar work ever - use a different pedal! At time it sounded like a buch of aluminum pie pans jangling together.
Did not grip me as much as I hoped
pas kiffé
Where is my mind is incredible, the rest I’m not a fan of. Wouldn’t listen again
alternative rock is not for me i think. it was fine
Nothing great
Het nummer Where is my Mind?
"Where Is My Mind" to klasy i lubię ten utwór, także spory plus za to. 2,5/5
I really didn't have any expectations around this album coming in and I only knew Where is my mind. After listening to the album I have to saybthat it's a hard pass from me, I couldn't get into it and can safely say I won't be listening to it again
Klingt wie Nirvana in nicht ganz so schlimm ...
Where is my mind was the only good song
fave song(s): gigantic it was fine. mixing was drier than i usually like... overall not really for me i think
I think I did have to listen to a Pixies album. They are iconic. I found this album grating and boring, unfortunately.
Bleeeh of mikið rokk sorry
I struggled through this one and finally heard a song I liked…but I was Fugazi’s “Waiting Room” the first song that spoiled off the (long awaited) end of Pixies…
Начало альбома. Ровно. Как-то не цепляет ничего, довольно монотонно. Сейчас песня, в котором есть женское соло - это уже звучит поинтереснее. "Where is my mind?" - очень классная песня, на фоне тех, что были перед ней, кажется белой вороной. Итог: понравилась всего одна песня. Как будто бы не хватило какой-то изюминки или необычных выбивающих моментов по звучанию.
Sometimes you hear shadows of Nirvana in the riffing, the overall sound I did not enjoy though.
I hear his vocal range is highly praised, but it's not for me.
i dont like this album, este es el verdadero rock and roll que yo detesto. I didnt know one of my fav songs was from this album…
Heard it before. Like I said before when rating another Pixies album: I don't vibe with them that hard. I see the potential but we just can't click. Also Doolittle is better 2/5
Where is my mind is a polished gem mixed in with some absolute gravel. Yerg.
come on now.... we've all heard the pixies lore but this is frustrating. It's not even pleasant to listen to??? banger album cover tho. it's a highly erotic album, i'll give it that
6/10 - A band of vampires driving 150km/h into a wall
I heard this band before. Some good tracks but some annoying ones as well. I would call it a fair album.
It had a couple hits - After that the whole damn album was the same shitty song
Where Is My Mind? was a stand out. The rest just was not working for me.
Sounds freaky!
Beats are good, voices are bad (especially cactus)
Where's my mind overshadows the rest of this work with it's beauty Hey, Paul
wasn’t too notable to me. i understand that for the time it was all very new but it wasn’t all that engaging to me. i liked the woman in it though
not good other than the one song
Was ok - not mind blowing
fav - where is my mind least - tonys theme
Noisy. Lack of melody
Okayish… i liked gigantic!
2/5
First Pixies album to hit my list. Nice. I listened to Doolittle years ago and remembered really not liking it at the time. I gave part of it a relisten about a year or so ago and, yeah, I'm still not fan. This album has a chance, however. I know "Where Is My Mind" features on this album, which is a pretty good tune. Hopefully the rest of this music measures up. I mean, yeah. This was more or less what I was expecting. Still, I always go in with an unshakeable optimism. I love myoosik, what can I say? Anyways, fuck this shitty fucking garage rock-adjacent album. If I were given a genre-extinction gun and five bullets to eviscerate whatever I want from music history, this kind of album would no doubt appear in my deliberations. It just sounds so fucking bad. I was covering the outside of my earbuds for the entirety of this album's runtime so nobody could catch me listening to such a lowly form of music. As far as actually constructive criticism goes, it's hard to be invested in this music when the majority of it goes by really quickly. The blown-out guitars and constant feedback also doesn't sound pleasing to me. On a more positive note, I like some of the breakneck percussion. The campiness it adds is occasionally fun. The female vocals are pretty alright, too. The male ones suck, however. Overall, it escapes a 1 star as I have a soft spot for weird and unusual albums, though I am never in a million years coming back to this. As mentioned previously, "Where Is My Mind" is the single, solitary victory of this album. I'm surprised they were able to wrench one out, truth be told. Virtually everything about it is different from the tracks which precede and follow it. The guitars are raw and deliberate without sounding abrasive. The songwriting/vocal melody is pretty good, and I like the lyrics. Good job, people from 40 years ago. Book time. Regarded by many as their best album. A testosterone-laden album where nothing "too pussy" made it through. I guess I'm less of a man for not liking this, but it's sadly an inalienable truth. The entry for this album is kind of weak, but I like to think this is here on good authority - I know Pixies are a big deal. I cosign this inclusion.
Didn't have time to listen to the whole thing but it also wasn't really my style
A little too punk-edged for my liking, but I appreciated the raw energy for the most part. Where Is My Mind? is an all-timer.
Didn’t really like it … mostly sounded like people screaming
Pixies are fine, but I never really latched on to them
ok dit was niet echt mijn album het nummer dat ik leuk vond was "where is my mind"
Not really for me, really enjoyed the instrumentals but the lyrics and vocals just didn’t resonate with me 2/5
A little noisy/garage band-y for me, I like both male and female vocalists though
not bad, just not for me!
Kind of a letdown for me. Understand the influence and would’ve cited it as a “great” album but found that after not actually listening to it in like 25 years I just didn’t enjoy the songs that much
I liked it, especially Oh My Golly! or Gigantic, but alternative rock isn’t really my cup of tea. Nonetheless, it is such a nice vintage record and did not expect the Spanish little brushes at all!
Female vocalist is very talented. Male vocalist is screechy and gives me anxiety.
I know this is a very influential band and I was looking forward to my first Pixies album but a big disappointment. Didn’t enjoy it at all and not tempted for a second listen.
I tried to like it, I really did. 2/5
The final song, Brick Is Red, was my favourite song on the album, up until 1:13- I had thought it was an instrumental piece without the screeching. I appreciate the historical significance of this band and the contrast of grunge music with the name Pixies delights me. Not an album I ever want my ears to endure again.
A couple of good tunes, but for the most part I found this a sloppy, disjointed, garage band mess. Perhaps that's due to fatigue from this style of delivery being so far overdone over the following few decades, perhaps it's just not meant for me as I listen today. I am, however, grateful that it exists, knowing the influence it had on albums and artists that came shortly after it.
I actually have no idea how i feel about this. Most of the songs were too noisy. Where is my mind is a banger tho
Pas trop mon truc le gros rock comme ça
it's cheering me up so i finish my assignment! I really enjoyed the vibe i love this kind of sounds
I thought I'd like this more than I actually did, considering how much I love "Where is My Mind?" but it wasn't my favorite album. A little too noisy and chaotic for my taste. My cats hated it, lol My high points beyond "Where is My Mind" were "Gigantic" and "Catcus."
lowk mid
Would be 1 star without Where Is My Mind
Didn't like it as much as I expected to. Opening track is great though. 2.5
- first song actually isn’t that bad, def a little weird but I like the guitar line. - these are a tad intense - Well where is my mind is an absolute classic. It’s so different from the other songs
Dark, disjointed and grunge. Sounds like it was recorded in a haunted school hallway. Cool sound, but not my thing
Noise
Can’t get into it
…I like “where is my mind”
Never knew the difference between pixies and Sonic youth. Now with the help of this list I realized sonic youth is the good one and pixies is just terrible talking heads if they were screamers. Gigantic is ok.
Was ok, not sure it's my thing
turns out I know where is my mind! although the first few notes are the most enjoyable bit of the song. feeling slightly more generous towards this album (i'm awarding a 2 instead of a 1)
Not as strong as their slightly later album Doolittle. But interesting as you can see their development between the 2
not a fan apart from where is my mind
overrated
Olihan taas menoa ja meininkiä. En tiedä yhtään mitä tässä tapahtui mutta oikein kivaa menoa eikä oikein mitään pahaa sanottavaa.
1st listen today. Right now Gigantic is playing, thus roughly half way through the album. I'm unimpressed so far. Instrumentally they're fine, solid beat, good guitar sound. Sorta grunge, sorta REM-y but with really bad lyrics. I know it's not fair of me to judge on first listen, but I don't think I can stand it a second time.
Favorite tracks: Where Is My Mind, Gigantic, River Euphrates I struggled to rate this one because the songs I liked I really liked, but the songs I didn't like I really didn't. I'll definitely be adding a few of these songs to my library, but most of them I would be happy not to listen to again. They absolutely made the best decision in releasing Where Is My Mind as a single, it has that dirty guitar riff but is a lot more palatable than a lot of other tracks. Overall, this was a little bit too much garage rock for my liking.
Wow, back to back Pixies albums, what are the odds? I think I liked this better than Doolittle...? It seemed to have more melodies that I enjoyed, and it has Where Is My Mind which is a certified classic, but also there's still a fair bit that's kinda just... tuneless and not very fun. And the vocals are... not good! Dunno, guess Pixies just aren't my cup of tea. Faves: Where Is My Mind, Tony's Theme
Remember yesterday when I insinuated that every song the Pixies plays sounds good? I’d like to formally withdraw that statement. It’s bold to start an album with three songs doing what I would generously describe as “fucking around.” And, to be honest, much of the rest of the album is so experimental as to be a rough listen. So much so that I wonder if I’ve ever even listened to this whole album. I saw them in concert once and remember thinking, “this is the best sounding live band I’ve ever heard.” All that said, when they’re on, I like their sound a lot. Gigantic, Surfer Rossa, Brick is Red all good alt/indie rock songs, and Where Is My Mind is a classic.
This alternative rock album lurches between quiet, skeletal passages and chaos, its jagged riffs and sudden eruptions giving it a deliberately unstable charm. The vocals twist from hush to howl, matching lyrics that feel like overheard fragments from feverish dreams. It’s like flipping through a torn comic book soaked in salt water—distorted, vivid, strangely electrifying and beyond saving at the same time.
Alt rock/punk. One GREAT song. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #390 Best Songs Where Is My Mind?
Not a bad album honestly, just not my exact style
I knew Where Is My Mind. I didn’t know, neither did I care, for the rest
TBT to being 14 and edgy and listening to "Where is My Mind" after hearing the instrumental version in "It's Kind of a Funny Story".
I’ve heard of the Pixies, but I was not familiar with their music. It’s loud and rough around the edges. I guess I have heard Where Is My Mind? before, that track is pretty good. I could really do without all the screaming on this album, it makes this a very uncomfortable listen for me. I think for me this is like a 1.5.
Dont think I ever heard this album the whole way through before The Pixies sound never really became a fixture in my collection Pleased to hear again Where Is My Mind and Gigantic, but I'm starting to think the Death To The Pixies is all I need ffom this band
Didnt like it very much except Where is my mind
one song i like, the killer song from fight club fame - where is my mind
Where is my mind is a fantastic song. Everything else on this album sounds terrible.
I want to like the Pixies more than I do.
I really don't get the pixies, but I appreciate they exist
Meh
It had the highest highs but a lot of the lowest lows
feel fairly neutral about this album, i don’t necessarily enjoy the vocals but i do enjoy the instruments and how they’re played, lots of good guitar rifts and beats. bunch of hootin and hollerin on this and maybe i just don’t understand garage rock enough to appreciate it but i’m not upset about hearing it. Where Is My Mind? stands out in a crazy way from the rest of the album, it makes sense why it’s the one off of this album that i know and enjoy. wouldn’t seek the album out again but wouldn’t be upset if i heard it.
i wanted to like it, but I really did not. the guys voice is annoying
The Pixies used to be better than this.
Uuhhhhh, i enjoyed the track "Where is my mind?" But the rest was take it or leave it.
top 3: - where is my mind? - brick is red - cactus
Kinda not good at all but there were a few decent tracks sprinkled in
fav songs: gigantic and where is my mind
everything after where is my mind is pretty okay, the rest though is not very good
2.5 - Meh
Didn’t hate this. I would say that a lot of the gushing about this album, and The Pixies in general is unfounded. I guess it’s about at what point in our lives we discover bands and albums. This was ok. Doubt I’d revisit it again. Personally, it’s not essential to experience before you die.
It was okay. I can see how this album was influential to bands that came after it but just barely. “Chaotic” is how I would describe some the later tracks but some of the earlier ones had a nice jam.
neh
Nunca fui fã. Tirando a música tema de clube da luta. Wheres my mind. O álbum é bagunçado, mas não é ruim.
Not my type. didn't enjoy first few songs but then it kind of grows on you... loved the drums in some of the songs. but not totally my type
Not my favorite
Ugh, Pixies again? I should only have to listen to them once. Yet I hated this album less.
Again the pixies not my thing but better than the other.
I’m gonna be curt when I say this, but this album stinks. I thought it was gonna be a good one because of Where is My Mind (Fight Club baby!), but everything else is just nothing short of a snooze fest. While this album was inspired the big grunge bands of the 90s, I just feel that it was too bland for me and wasn’t that great. I just don’t think this works as a whole album, it had one big hit and the rest of very obvious filler. Favorite Tracks: Where Is My Mind Rating: 2.5/5
Difficult to listen through. Felt very non-emotive and boringly simple? Obviously Pixies are legends in the music world and I can see how this would be foundational to later music which all seems much more engaging and interesting than this, but if it is indeed foundational, then that is all it seems like to me, a base layer to more polished and energetic music. Seems like “Where Is My Mind?” was an influence to Nirvana/grunge music?
Not a fan
Really disappointing. Only one good song, “Where Is My Mind?” and the rest are not good. 4/10
I would probably enjoy a live show, I can see the crowd adding to the experience- I did not like listening to this album. It was a lot going on, not relaxing at all.
I would probably enjoy a live show, I can see the crowd adding to the experience- I did not like listening to this album. It was a lot going on, not relaxing at all.
I only really tolerated this album. It felt like 3/4 of the time, someone was screaming directly in my ear drum.
Pretty mid for a pixies album. Some sonically irritating lines and "hooks". Prefer bossa nova
Never knew The Pixies other than “Here Comes Your Man” that’s on a different album. Not sure what to say about this one?
Heilt på da jevne
Ok…. Love the first half and I love punk. I seee violent femmes in here but back half droned on
Ehhh
There are a few moments where I want to love it but overall most of the album is basic noise. It's kind of like a school band where most people can't play their instruments, in a way thats charming but in another way its annoying.
what a fucking slog, the last 5 songs killed me. It was even more depressing to see how the number of listens dropped off.
A long time ago I used to love noisy music. Not anymore.
Ah, Where's my mind?
Too yelly.
Pixies have their moments, but those moments are mostly on their next two albums. Only thing worth saving here is "Where Is My Mind?" Sorry. As influential as 'Surfer Rosa' may have been, its poor production and preference for experimental noise over melody make it subpar at best. A year ago, I'd have given this a 1, but there have been SO many more heinous albums on this list, it would seem unfair to put this among them.
I wasn’t a fan… it just sounded weird for the sake of it and o was just waiting for it to be over
Dah boom boom dah . . . Dah boom boom dah . . . Dah boom boom dah! That's all I heard. Search the entire album for a track I even semi-liked. Gigantic came the closest and I can honestly say I liked it. The last track (Brick is Red) had me captivated up until when they started singing.
Noisy and a bit whiney. Not really for me
This just doesn’t really get me out of bed
First couple of songs about bones... one of some screaming monkey.. rah rah rah ride... can feel a bit of harmony with the instruments but far from it as the album goes. What a mess with the ending for "Vamos". Very artistic with the cover photo (:
Meh. Heard it all before.
The music is boring, lifeless, and other than one big hit, isn't anything impressive. Favorite Track: "Where Is My Mind?"
Yes, I can see how this influenced future bands. And I really don't need to hear it again. Especially River Euphrates. And Tony's Theme.
eh. songs are too short. mostly just not great punk rock.
I was excited to listen to Surfer Rosa because I saw Where Is My Mind? on the track list. Sadly, that ended up being the only song I enjoyed. I'm not sure how to define the Pixies genre (college rock? surf country punk rock?), but I'm sure that I don't like it.
Music can take you places. Either a place you want to go to or somewhere you’ve already been. I don’t want to go to these places. I don’t have enough nostalgia for this type of alternative punky rock nor is it somewhere I want to imagine myself
Felt like I was in someone’s garage listening to their high school band jam. Fun vibes but outside of where is my mind, nothing I’m going back to.
I wanted to like this album but couldn’t. I prefer the musicians they influenced to the real deal!
I'm listening to Surfer Rosa by the Pixies for the first time. I was in the car so I couldn't read the lyrics (and had trouble understanding them) but while this the guitar heavy raw sound I usually like, sonically it sounded the same for the majority of the tracks. I think if I heard the tracks come on the radio I would turn it up but as an album it didn't make me rush out and find a copy. Where's my mind was the standout for me.
I just couldn’t get into the sound or songs.
Energetic and lively, but production is a bit rough-around-the-edges and only a couple standouts.
Groupe connu de nom uniquement. J'avais par contre déjà entendu 'Where is my mind' (+1) sans l'associer à ce groupe. J'ai apprécié les morceaux plus dynamiques, mais c'est à peu près tout. Il m'a paru bien plus long qu'il n'est en réalité. Pas sur de vouloir l'écouter de nouveau. =>2/5
Just too avant garde for my liking. However Where is My Mind is one of my favorite songs of all time Best Song: Where is My Mind? Rating: 4.5/10 (Forgettable) Stars: 2/5
Undeniable punk energy. But never gives way to anything melodically or lyrically compelling.
nah
Only liked where's my mind, kinda... Not a fan
Inte mycket som fångade mig här
Most of my favorite bands favorite band. I’ve tried listening to them before and found it hard to click with. No change this time through. I can hear their influence in a lot of 90s rock bands and I enjoy the sillyness they have in their music, but overall did didnt really enjoy the listen.
Apart from ‘Where Is My Mind?’ it was pretty bland and uninspiring
Not for me.
Noisy and not at all my thing.
I know the song "Where is my Mind" but unsure where I heard it from. Not for me overall but two stars.
Only one decent song, "Where is my mind"
Influential but not my favorite
I love the guitar but the songs are kinda repetitive
Where is my mind is obviously a banger but I couldn't vibe with a few others
Not terrible, but kinda annoying.
If it was just the first half of the album, the rating would have been higher. But it fell off the cliff with the 2nd half
I think im just not a pixies fan
Did not love this.
Good enough album. Where is mind is obviously miles above everything else
2,3/5
ganske dårlig og bråkete. En bra sang. De brukte gitardistortion på vokal?
meh
Where is my mind reißt es raus, ansonsten eher Lärmbelästigung. Eva würde nur 1 Stern geben.
Leider mehr erwartet. Where is my Mind kommt auf die Playlist.
There's a few good songs on here (you know which ones) and I hear the influence on future grunge but a lot of this album sounds the same and it loses me. It's disjointed, manic, and too weird at times. I liked Kim Deal vocals much better than angry fat man. "Where Is My Mind" feels out of place compared to the rest of the noise on here. 2.25 tops (topless).
Alt rock is not something i personally enjoy and Surfer Rosa does not change that for me. one song was talking about me btw (big big log). Instruments just sound like an ejaculation of different notes, sounding uninspired with little direction. I thought Where is My Mind was alright.
2.5
Not my cup of tea for sure. I feel like the vocals just genuinely didn’t sound good. The guitars went pretty hard in a few songs but then the singers would come in and just ruin it for me. The best song was easily “Where Is My Mind”. It felt like it was from a completely different album.
Other than the one good track, I don’t like the Pixies
This lot grate on me.
They seem one of the best in this genre and there's some attempt at variety but no real appeal
Hmm another Pixies album. Hmm. I gave them a chance the last time with Dolittle, but this album is filled with masses of 2 minutes wonders that are so punky and over so quickly they don't touch the sides of your brain. The only highlight is "where is my mind" that is so lovely it makes you ache for what this album could be.
this was BARELY better then the last pixie albums i listened to... tho saying that, where is my mind SUCKS OMG. can we just wait maybe 2 years to give me the next pixie albums i can't...
Not for me.
Loud. Off key? Garage memories, howling caribou. Challenging my patience at times.
MEH
I didn't feel anything for this album.
There’s a couple of great songs on here in gigantic and where’s my mind but the rest just feels a bit sloppy
Well, that was an unpleasant experience. I wasn't a big fan of anything I had heard prior to listening to this whole album, and it did nothing to change my mind.
Just couldn’t really get into it or even feel comfortable listening to it. Raw and original but just dissonant and not really enjoyable to listen to. And maybe that’s what they were going for, but not an enjoyable experience for me. Left me feeling tense and grasping for things to hold onto. But I liked the originality and quirkiness too. Can’t work out if it works better in songs like Gigantic and Where is my Mind, or if that’s just because they are more familiar? (2.5) +.5 for those two belters!
Not my favourite. Where is my mind is quality though
this was ok- im not a big pixies fan but i did like a few of the songs on this album! obviously the most popular one- "Where is My Mind" was good, but I also enjoyed most of the songs later in the album too. i think that this album is incredibly important for this history and evolution of the rock genre, but it is not necessarily something i would listen to.
too alternative for me
This is a very generous 2
Bone Machine - 2/4 Break My Body - 3/4 Something Against You - 2/4 Broken Face - 2/4 Gigantic - 2/4 River Euphrates - 2/4 Where Is My Mind? - 4/4 Cactus - 2/4 Tony's Theme - 2/4 Oh My Golly! - 2/4 Vamos - 2/4 I'm Amazed - 2/4 Brick Is Red - 2/4
- I listened through this album twice while working...and nothing really stuck out as either really good or bad. It just...kind of was. - I didn't know any of the songs on this album, I know more from the next two albums, and even those I don't know well. - Likely wouldn't go outta my way to listen to this album again in the future.
Not my taste
I can see how this would be revelatory if you were a certain sort of 16-year-old when it came out. But I'm not 16 now, and I wasn't then, and this is just really effing average.
Couldn’t get into it
All crap except Where is My Mind?.
This guy's voice and the delivery...they almost made me tap out. There are some cool songs, then I found out this is the same band that made "Debaser" off the Skate 3 soundtrack, so that's cool. It would take a lot to get passed bro's voice, though.
Where is my mind and gigantic feel like the only songs where they were trying to make actual songs. The rest of this feels like half-baked filler disguised as avante garde anti-songs.
I made it through.
Way too sonically ugly.
What're the odds I get this two days after I make the "Where Is My Mind?" comment?
Wore out its welcome pretty quickly for me
Kinda whiny & ruins the songs I already liked.
Sounded like old teenage angst and loud noises. This felt more like a chore to listen to and at points very hard to decipher, dissect, and listen.
Maybe I just didn't get it but save for the album cover, this just wasn't very good. Droning on and on and the instrumentals weren't very good. I will say that "Where Is My Mind?" was very good, so that kind of saved the album from being a total loss. 3/10.
Really like Pixies but not convinced by this album as a whole sadly.
Not my cuppatea
I expected to like this more than I did, far more hit or Miss than I expected. Some of the songs feel like a first attempt or demos that could do with some more attention to avoid sounding half baked or unfinished. I appreciate that that was the aesthetic the band was aiming for and there quite a few songs in the track list where it comes off as really endearing and reminiscent of just jamming with your friends. But often it detracts from the listening experience, it is really noticeable however how influential the sounds on this album were. I don’t know if calling it proto-grunge is appropriate but it certainly feels like it. Best song is obviously Where Is My Mind? and the worst song is easily Tony’s Theme which quickly loses its charm and ends up just being annoying. Overall 2/5, I liked the soundscape of this album but the songwriting for the most part was pretty lacking for me.
I feel like I want to like Pixies, I really do. This album was just okay though. I think I heard “Gigantic” before and I definitely have heard “Where IsMy Mind?” as it gets regular play on Sirius XM. Musically it’s primitive in that the musicians really don’t seem to have much experience. Lyrically there’s not much to praise here. The vocals weren’t great. Nice cover though haha. 3/10. Rounded up.
A really weird and grating listen. A couple of decent tracks sandwiched in-between a lot of punk-adjacent screaming and bloat. Which already isn't great for an album under 35 mins. Top tracks: Gigantic, Where Is My Mind?
4.5/10 Favorite Tracks: Where Is My Mind?, Break My Body Least Favorite: Vamos(Skip), I'm Amazed (Skip), Cactus (Skip), Tony's Theme (Skip)
Eight of 1001... Although on paper they look appealing to me, I've never quite warmed to The Pixies the way I always imagined I should. While I can appreciate what the fuss must have been all about in 1988, I personally came to these albums after hearing what Nirvana had already crafted with the same building materials, so the novelty was always a bit lost on me. Everything beyond the obvious choices - Where Is My Mind? and Gigantic - is just too intentionally inaccessible, too chaotic and just too lacking in hooks to stand up to repeated listening. I doff my cap to Surfer Rosa, but it's never been an album I want to return to time after time. Indeed, The Pixies did better than their debut - in fact I even prefer Frank Black's solo output to this. Huge respect but a low score, I'm afraid.
Pre-listening thoughts: I got Doolittle as my second album ever on this generator and I think I hold an unpopular opinion cause I really didn’t like it. Not super enthusiastic going into this one. Post/during listening thoughts: the pixies love to just yell and talk during their songs. Yeah I like this just as much as Doolittle. Which is not really a whole lot. 3/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: break my body, where is my mind Least fav tracks: something against you, broken face, river Euphrates, Tony’s theme, oh my golly, vamos
Imma surf on right out of that
Few ups, some downs, mostly somewhere at low fourths. Doesn't give much.
My least listened Pixies record and I feel there might be a reason for it. Surfer Rosa is missing the catchy tracks for me, it's all awkward and quirky.
It’s a low tier effort with this one. This is the 2nd Pixies album I’ve listened to and I’m starting to wonder what all the fuss is about with them. I don’t know how you will feel about it reader, but I will say this album won’t make you a fan.
Nope. Not for me. 2/5.
Tony's Theme was fun, but mostly I didn't find much inspiration here. 2 star I think. Brick is Red is also ok.
Very much not my thing. Can definitely hear how it could have influenced Nirvana's Nevermind, though.
too screamy
eh
A somewhat restless and nervous mood that no longer appeals. The target audience in the year of release was probably quite young, so it suited a kind of rebellion and being different.
Enjoyed it for the nostalgia but other than Where is my Mind I won’t be returning to it.
A few hits, mostly misses. 20-year old dude garage band vibe, definitely not my thing (now, or back then). Lyrics are trash, melodically a little better. DNF most songs
one of the worst things i heard. only good song is where is my mind. 1.88
Pioneers of the garage-indie sound that would takeoff in the following decade. Pixies blast open the door of what an indie rock album can sound like. Sonically gritty, experimental and vast, although far too much flak for this record to be an enjoyable listen, particularly with Doolittle arriving just a year later. Best Tracks: - Where Is My Mind - Cactus - Gigantic Worst Tracks: - Oh My Golly! - Brick Is Red Rating: 5.5/10
not really a fan too avant garde to me I think - moany rock
Love where is my mind but found this pretty forgettable
Don’t really have impression, they are a bit old I guess
There are a couple bangers on here. Gigantic, Where Is My Mind, hell I’ll even give them Tony’s Theme. But the rest just shows why the Pixies are overrated
Pretty disappointing album. Was stoked to listen to this due to Where Is My Mind being on it, but was let down.
This is the second Pixies album I've ever listened to, the first was also via this site. It wasn't terrible, but equally it wasn't very good. I did make it all the way through, and a couple of tracks were interesting. The best thing about this album is the cover, that is a cracking pair of tits!!!!
I respected for what it is. And of course I like that one song from fight club. But this isn't my jam
I know and like the song Where Is my Mind? but other than that, I find the album unremarkable.
Ranges from pretty cool to goofy nonsense. The production makes it sound badass even when the songs get incoherent.
Nice tits, good single, the rest I could pass on🙃
While not bad in any way I personally just found this track list to be very generic, not well suited to my taste, annoying and repetitive. Who knows, maybe with some time I’ll relisten to this and find enjoyment in the conventions it possesses, that I still think, in terms of quality, are not all that bad.
The best thing about most of these songs is that they’re short.
Some Punk vibe
no reason for where is my mind to have a billion listens tbh
Their sound is just kind of annoying to me, especially the guitar tone and vocals. I can respect what they do in terms of songwriting, but none of the tracks are really that special either
Other than Bone Machine, nothing here that I particularly like. The Pixies brand of indie has never really appealed to me and this album has done nothing to change my mind
Just a lot of shouting. Obvs love Where Is My Mind? but actually preferred the rip off my friend's band wrote called TV Show in about 2003. RIP Baculum.
I don't think it's bad; I just didn't care for it. Had to give it a 2 because there's not a single song I'd want to listen to again.
While I didn’t mind the music too much…..the vocals ruined it for me. Not my thing.
A scattershot “slacker rock” album that feels half-finished on purpose. I do appreciate the colorful sound here, disparate genres mashed together to craft interesting textures… but come on, is this really “good” by any normal metric? I guess it was to Kurt Cobain, who translated these ideas into much better music. Best song: Tony’s Theme
To each his own. This album received decent critical acclaim which was lost on me. I personally would like to have the 34:07 run time minutes back.
Noisy, short, punchy, gritty, obscure. Lots of dynamics changing, great guitar riffs. Where Is My Mind is a classic - but I really can't get behind the rest. I know of the influence on alt rock and grunge, I just despise the cacophony of voices at times. It just doesn't hit the right spots for me. Maybe, I need to be in a particular mood, where I would dig the unhinged punkrock aesthetic more. Standout Tracks: River Euphrates, Where Is My Mind
Not my thing. Gigantic was good and Where is my mind is good but otherwise meh
To my absolute incredible SHOCK: I didn’t hate this album. I went into it assuming I would because of my previous experience with the Pixies. It definitely could be worse. I found myself not wincing to their songs, different than usual, and being rather content. I think that it’s not something I would normally listen to on my own time, but I wasn’t horrified by it being on the list. I think with more time I could learn to maybe like.
No more Pixies they exhaust me. Occasionally interesting music, I surprisingly like the sound of this record, but both singers are hideous and the atonal shit always overtakes any potential for a decent listen. Yes they're influential on like 4 bands you've heard of but ENOUGH ALREADY. They became one of the most overrated bands ever - write a damn song, tune your guitar and get off my lawn. 4/10 2 stars
Meh
Pixies are a group I know little of or have any inclination towards. In fact the only time previously they came on my radar was a couple of months ago when they appeared on my 1001 list. Didn’t like that album and like this one less. As I said then not a complete musical disaster (allowing that a lot of folks do like them but not me) but nothing which lubricates my girth. 2/5 22/11/24
Álbum mal feito Só serve para dar dor de cabeça Som muito simplista Em 1988 deve ter sido inovador
break my bones começa relativamente bem e vai decaindo até a metade do album where is my mind é mt bom, cactus é bom e depois disso dá uma descaralhada not really my tempo
I thought I would like this more
Some songs were okay, some not so good
This album almost feel like it was made as a social experiment, where they wanted to find out how much noise they could make and how badly they could sing, yet still get called music. The answer is apparently a lot. There are 1 or 2 decent songs on the album which save it from being a 1, but in that case, it was mostly the instrumentals that were enjoyable, not the vocals. If you want to hear what their music sounds like when sung by someone who actually knows how to sing, you should listen to James Blunt's cover of where is my mind. Immediately becomes much more enjoyable.
