Reviews (page 11 of 14)

Very fun album. Something different I liked hearing their music that wasn't "where is my mind" 3.6

Not a massive fan. Bit obnoxious and callous, but ‘Where is my Mind’ is and will always be a classic.

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yeah, it’s got great range and is very somber Favourite song: Track 5 - Gigantic

ta bien

the hits hit and the misses miss. A little annoying and poppy sometimes but Where Is My Mind? Timeless classic

Genres: Alternative rock, art punk, grunge Formed: Boston, U.S. in 1986 Run time: 13 songs, 34 min, 7 sec The album has a Punk feel to it. The tracks are usually quite intense and often feature nonsense lyrics. I’ve not heard anything else like it. Spotify: Least popular song: almost 3M Most popular song: >733M plays. “Bone Machine” is above the narrator's love for Carol and her continuous infidelities. It was apparently the result of a dream (nightmare) about a woman with a “Bone Machine” inside her. Given that information, I think the title should be taken literally as someone who goes from one sexual encounter to another. "Break My Body" is about the desire to rebel against societal norms, regardless of the cost (physical or emotional). It is a throwback to the days of Punk. “Something Against You” is very Punk-like with its frantic guitars and screamed lyrics. Basically the singer really dislikes someone but it doesn’t say why. “Broken Face” starts off talking about incest and then facial dis-figurement. This may be a metaphor because the consequence is being unable to speak. It’s not a pop song! “Gigantic” is about a woman singing about her lover, Paul. The lyric mention him taking her to a “shady place”, which I believe is talking about unconventional (depraved?) love. It has been suggested “Gigantic” refers to the depth of their love, but given the context, I suspect it is referring to the size of Paul’s equipment. “River Euphrates” is an exploration of the war in Gaza. “Where Is My Mind?” speaks about the inner turmoil. It is best summarised in the line "feet on the air and head on the ground." This is of course the opposite of being grounded and in control (head in the air and feet on the ground). “Cactus” is about longing to have something (an article of clothing) to hold onto in the absence of the person. It isn’t clear why the person is absent (left or dead). The singing is quit muted perhaps to reflect the fleeting nature of the relationship lost. "Tony's Theme" is about a superhero named Tony who rides around on his bicycle. This would suggest Tony is a child wanting to do good and be great. “Oh My Golly!” has lyrics in Spanish and English. It seems to be a bit nonsensical. It mentions the character “Surfer Rosa”. It mentions killing someone, then claims it was a joke. “Vamos” is about a couple living in New Jersey. Life seems to be good but they think it will be better in California. “I’m Amazed” starts with kids talking in (high) school and the half a minute of nonsense. “Brick Is Red” is more nonsense. Listen Again?: No My Rating: ***

First time giving Pixies an actual listen. Actually liked it. 3.75/5

Not bad, just strange. I like Where Is My Mind and Vamos a lot more than the rest of the songs. I don't really get this album, maybe there's something I'm missing. 3 stars for solid musicianship.

Excited for this. I liked Doolittle but saw a few songs of theirs at Roo and wasn't impressed so we'll see! 2 songs in this shit is dark. They really like singing about bones. Definitely like the punk sound wayyyyy more than the usual boring ass punk albums we've listened to already. Didn't even know they had a girl singer. 6 songs in and this is just raw af bordering on some noise rock but the guitars I actually fuck with. Where is My Mind is a 5/5 song but no shit there. Whooaaaaaa a superhero named Tony?!?!?! If you don't like this dudes voice you will probably hate this album lol. Also some Spanish goin on. This is some angry shit! Definitely hear some Nirvana in this. But like the really raunchy raw Nirvana where Kurt Cobain wants to kill the world. Not bad I can see myself getting in a mood for this.

For having that dramatic cover, the album is pretty funny.

Surfer Rosa is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Pixies. This is considered to be one of the best Pixies' albums and a great rock album overall. It's been certified gold in Canada, US, and UK. The hooks and guitar riffs are memorable and unique which was praised by critics. I thought this was an amazing album and I'm glad I got to listen to the Pixies' debut album for the first time. I agree this is a staple of alternative rock and everyone should give it a listen.

begging this fucking webbed site for half stars options. 3.5. anyways miss deal i am on my knees pls give me one chance i’m dying here. anyways thinking about how much more complicated my children trying to get through their moms music would be than getting through my own moms music like this is. this is all raw emotion and not an endless parade of self and culture referential cryptology.

3.5! Love me some Pixies. Särökitaraa ja viimeistelemätöntä touhua, tykkäsin. En ole koskaan kuunnellut tätä levyä, vaikka moni biisi on tuttu.

It's dirty, chaotic and angry, which can make it hard to listen to at times. At the same time, it has a certain freshness and some pretty interesting guitar and drums sections. Mixed on this one. I don't have a desire to re-visit, but I do see the appeal.

Not bad for a first effort. Good energy and decent riffs. Is there anything that really jumped out at me? No. Would I sit through it if it came up in the playlist? Yes.

pretty good

Pixies are ok, this album is ok

I can appreciate this on some level, but I’d never go out of my way to listen to it.

It was okay, but nothing special.

The highs are high on this one but overall it's kinda raw and has some real stinkers. Shout out Jim's old boss Tony who rides a bicycle and wears superhero shirts.

I didn't hate it but it was just okay for me.

Another pixies album! Didn't like it quite as much as the last one, but still good.

A little rough but got into a good groove there

This album is almost it

Pixies are just not for me but Where Is My Mind is a banger

I like a few of the songs others are interesting. May have to return for other albums.

Decent album. Not a ton to say about it

Eerste helft hard gaan, tweede helft stort het in Maar man where is my mind wat een nummer

5/13, 38%

It was fine; I think my high school self would have enjoyed this album more than my current self did

Highlights: "River Euphrates," "Where Is My Mind," "Gigantic," "Broken Face" Pixies on top of their formula: odd measures of even beats to keep the song moving, intense vocals, minimal and dissonant riffs and hooks. The production has the rawness of a demo while sneaking in effective touches like overdubbing pans of Black's different takes of screams or a final warp of modulation. Even though they owe a ton to Violent Femmes, this is the rise of that band's vicarious influence over all of rock. Just not quite at the peak of Doolittle.

Not bad, but I would not say I enjoyed it. Of course, "Where Is My Mind?" is pretty good.

This isn’t really for me, but I can see that it has excellence in it.

My younger self would give this a 4 but I'm just not nearly as into it. Still a good album!

I want to be cool enough to love the Pixies but I just can't get there. Not entirely unlistenable as it goes on, though the beginning is rough. If I squint I can even see why other people love it. When the different noisy elements and dramatic dynamic contrast comes together well, like Where Is My Mind, it really works. But to me there are a more misses than hits here. That said I did enjoy it more than the last Pixies the generator gave me. Maybe they're wearing me down.

Another album where the songs I already knew are amazing and the other tracks... less so. Also another album which was enough before my time that I never got into it but close enough that I can hear the influence in so much stuff I did get into. One of the biggest things I can hear in this record however, is Steve Albini. Half way through this, the strength of the good stuff was enough to make this a 4 but by the end I've tired of the intentionally provocative sound enough drop it to a 3

Some good ideas and very influential, gotta respect that.

Kinda punk, sorta delirious so you'd need to be an a dark place to really enjoy it. Thankfully my life is dark.

Can see it was very influential, but just not my thing.

Enjoyable album, not very catchy but some good guitar parts. Don't love the guy's voice. 3.5/5

energetic and intense. quirky vocals and lyrics. i may need to visit more of their catalogue.

Tough to listen to at times. Tough subject matter and grating vocals. Undeniably a big influence on future music though. Not to mention "Where is my mind" which always slaps

fine! Where is my Mind got big on tik tok for good reason.

This was a decent album and had pixies best song with where is my minds. Enjoyed Doolittle and this one pretty much equally. Feel like Pixies were a good band that I missed out on due to being shut before my time and having bands come after them that are more refined and my style. All in all this is a good album and I’d relisten to it. 7.3/10

I like this, but I don't love it. Where is My Mind and Gigantic are amazing, but the rest is only a little notch above OK, I think. Of the three we've had, I'd put this better than Bossanova, but not as good as Doolittle - so the top end of a 3. Could elevate it to a 4 given that it's their debut and it's clearly a bit of a game-changer more broadly, but I'm not going to, it's still too tuneless and shouty in places to deserve that. 3/5.

Except for Where is my mind, the rest of the album is exhausting.

Where Is My Mind is a stunning song, but I find the rest of this album to be a fairly tuneless screechy affair, less about actual songs than being offbeat and off-kilter.

Ruido.

This was okay, maybe two or three were worth listening to a second time. However did not know that the track, Cactus, was originally by The Pixies. I was first introduced to that song on David Bowie's album, Heathen.

Solid music. Not a huge fan of Steve Albini’s production choice of messy mixes, but for some songs on this album it works. Others it does not.

My mind’s right here, and it’s landed on “Surfer So-Sosa.”

Some good songs, some bad songs, mostly didn’t like the genre

Molto bello!

Great bass playing. Grunge and surfer rock mix. Good unique vocal delivery and music.

6/10 and that may be a tad generous. Not quite my style but I can see the appeal and uniqueness. Has potential for higher rating with more listens. Ned recommends their way better Doolittle album.

This album has 2 good songs on it. And it's the ones everyone knows. (Broken Face & Where is my mind?) The rest are rather average and somewhat boring. I wondered how this got the recognition this did especially in the 80s then I actually looked at the album cover. Boobs. Well played, Pixies.

First few songs are a good intro to the album but by far the weakest. Album gets great in back half.

I've tried this one three or four times and was about to give up and stop trying. Actually, the album is wery uneven. Where Is My Mind stands out like a tree in a field.

Nice effects with a headset.

Good for what it is, but not my style, too sloppy

Pretty decent mix of tunes. Rated lower because I much prefer some of their other albums but still enjoyed it.

Not really my cup of tea. I get it, but at the same time it just didn't click for me. However, the 4 songs I liked, man I really liked them so much.

Favorite: River Euphrates

Fav Song: Where is My Mind?

A bit too noisecore for my taste, but definitely some fun parts

When all you really know from Pixies is "Where Is My Mind?" this album is a bit of a surprise. That's not to say I'm complaining, I love me some grungy punk like this. The aforementioned song is by far the best on the album it is a damn all time great track! Other standout tracks are "Broken Face", "Gigantic", "Cactus", and "Tony's Theme" the last of those being a very fun song.

Solid and definitely scratches a nostalgic itch.

Vraument moyen, une chance qu'il y a Where is mt mind

Thought it was ok, didn’t realize one of the songs on here was one of my favorites. Definitely a different sound happy to listen but not something I’d seek out

Some good songs but a little raw for me, reminds me in patches of early cage the elephant

Avant garde, post-punk, pre-grunge - hard to believe this came out in 1988. Great production and sounds throughout. And even though I've heard the song six thousand times, Where is my Mind is still on of the greatest of all time.

This was fine. I didn't love it. But I didn't dislike it. It would have been really fun to see in concert though. Where Is My Mind? is iconic and unfortunately outshines the rest of the album.

I like the Pixies, I don't love the Pixies. I didn't get into them until later in life. That being said... Where is my mind is one of my top songs of all time. The magic they had on that track was never reached again in my eyes. They have some good tracks Who has them as their favorite band? 55 year old's who did a lot of acid in the early 90's? What situations is this music your go to? When you have reached fuck it. You just lost your 20 year job waiter job because your 20 year old manager was being a dick. You get in your dodge neon and crank this till your pioneer speakers blow. Maybe I just don't get it.

The only reading this album barely makes a 3 is Where Is My Mind? I did not like the rest of the discordant, loud music.

As a big breakthrough record with one amazing song on it, sure it’s fine. But boy does this not stack up against Dolittle.

Has to be listened to loudly. Very raw, screams and softness indie punk. I wanted to like this more than I did because I had heard of the band and knew of its cult status but it didn’t really hit home for me

How the hell did I get two Pixies albums in a row? It’s fine, I don’t mind them musically but not a fan of the vocals (again).

Some of the lyrics are interesting with their innuendo, some of the music is okay and a bit catchy, but it seems too disjointed or jumping around to get into it on the first or second listening.

It ight, i didn't really connect with it

loud and boney

just ok

I love Kim Deal. Pixies have some great stuff and we're real genre creating artists. The guitar sound often leaves me feeling quite prickly and fatigued though.

Where is My Mind? is a fantastic song. Nothing else on here matches it but there is certainly some passion on display.

overall pretty good album: 6.3/10 -very nice instrumentation, helps the songs pop -vocals get drowned out in some of the songs which I don't like -like the old school rock vibe, high bpm, good vibes, Songs I liked: Broken Face River Euphrates Where is my mind Tony's theme

Pixies don't sound the same once you learn that their lead singer is a fat balding man with the fashion sense of a guy who sells corn on the cob behind your local Tesco. Sorry that was mean. You gotta admit that he's up there with some of the least "lead singery"-looking lead singers of all time though. Kind of all over the place. Pixies' production never really clicked with me. It sounds like these songs were recorded inside a whale's stomach or something. It's pretty jarring. "Where Is My Mind" is a masterpiece though.

Given that this album came out in 1988 I have to assume that this album had a large influence on Nirvana and other 90s bands. It also sounded like it might have been an influence on the rock-side of the White Stripes. With the exception of "Where is my mind" which I already knew, I can't say that I really like what I heard here. Both of the singers are bad and the sound is just a bit too low-fi for me to really enjoy.

i like where is my mind but not fussed abt the others tbh

Just like Pavement this is another I'm "supposed" to like because it's influential or some bullshit. I guess for the time period it was different and weird so there's that. Unlike something like Run DMC who's influence led to a whole new genre of music this just underwhelms, I guess I just don't get it. Maybe Matt is right and Frank Black is better. I do like the album cover though so that gets it an extra star.

Ehhh it was okay. Definitely different but wasn't as catchy as I was expecting from them. I know the 2nd album a little better and this wasn't as good as that.

Anyone who has seen the movies Mr. Nobody or Fight Club has inevitably fallen in love with the song Where Is My Mind. What a powerful and monumental hit! There are also other very strong moments on the album like Cactus, Bone Machine or Gigantic. I can't say that the rest of the material encourages me to come back to it often, but it's very good to listen to.

Post-punk punk, at least in spirit even if the level of technical competence is above that of most punk. It was OK, I listened to the whole thing without any desire to stop it, but nothing grabber my attention. There are spoken passeges that seem to focus on swearing rather than on any real message - these were just a waste of time, Not recommended, but no need of a stay away notice either

Bone machine- okay,, interesting note to start out on Break my bones- another bone song Something against you- not sure what’s going on here Broken face- short and bombastic👍 Gigantic- good hook, love a female vocal👍 River Euphrates- another in your face track, and I like the premise here👍 Where is my mind?- A justified classic👍 Cactus- weird but also kinda dull Tonys theme- quite random but music is good Other songs continue is similiar theme, feel like i would have to listen to this more times to appreciate. 3/5

Candy and pretzels, underproductive, talk at lunch, georgian food?, annoying meeting, scramble on work (bad), liverpool in background, pregame, kickball, flip cup, good vibez, beef stew leftover, chill and talk, bed/office tomorrow?

Fine, sloppy punk. Couple really good tracks, overall could grow on me but n0t an absolute banger out the gates. 3/5

Pixies are my dad's favorite band of all time and growing up he tried very hard to put me on them, but I was a stubborn preteen who thought Fall Out Boy was the peak of all rock. He'd be very frustrated to know that a ton of the bands he tried to put me on in my formative music-listening years are now some of the best artists to sum up my taste (70s-80s new wave and indie, 90s alt rock, etc). "Gigantic" is super nostalgic wow. My sister would repeat the chorus over and over again when she was little and I remember the song was in an Apple commercial that my dad recorded on the DVR to show everyone in my household that a Pixies' song was on TV (also literally Phoebe Bridgers was the star of the commercial and I never knew until last year. She's been living rent free in my head longer than I even remember). I do have a bias for Doolittle (which hopefully makes its way in this rotation soon), but I can definitely see how Surfer Rosa is super influential in developing gritty indie rock, especially as a debut album.

It’s wild to me that where is my mind wasn’t released as a single for this album. I get that it caught on through fight club but it’s so much better than the rest of the album and so unique it’s crazy that they only chose gigantic. It’s interesting to hear some Spanish lyrics and the last song was pretty good also, plus I can definitely see where Kurt contain got his inspiration from in this album.

Honestly a pretty significant downgrade from Doolittle.

Interesting, but not my favorite.

Pixies are one of those bands I'm supposed to like for some reason but I just can't get into them, other than a few songs.

this one is middle of the road for me. there are quite a few songs that i thoroughly liked, and will revisit. overall good, but not something i’d relisten to as a whole album.

Pretty solid album, I’m amazed and Brick is red were my favorites off the album.

unpilished, edgy, inconsistent, one great track, like three other tracks are also passable. likeable, not lovable. 6/10

Joyous, fun, and chaotic, but a little rough. My sense is these guys have the reputation they do because all the good grunge bands liked them so much, but they actually sound kind of nothing like the grunge bands, and I also don't think they're as good.

The intro track was weird. Where is my mind is a perfect grunge song. Gigantic is cool but a bit weird, this was maybe b/c it's early grunge and attempting things was kinda the cool thing to do ☺️

It took me a while to warm up to this album. The first few tracks had me uneasy. Eventually, I found myself bouncing my head to the rhythm and finding some enjoyment here...I mean, it wasn't like I was head over heels for it, but maybe I got it a little...

I was in a very bad mood when I started listening to this. Even at its relatively short running time of 34 minutes, it felt like a slog, a chore. Soul-numbingly mediocre. I came back to it later, in a much better mood and, while I still didn't love it, I didn't quite feel the same animosity. These songs sound like they're not fully done yet. If I were their producer, I'd say, "Good start, y'all, now go back and finish them."

I had several friends into the Pixies in college, but they never really clicked with me. I appreciated hearing this album and do think I like it more than back then, but it still isn’t quite there for me.

Listened Before? N Nice NSFW album cover there, Pixies. So, like many GenXers I have heard of the Pixies. I have never listened to them that I remember. My comments are that it sounds a lot like a plethora of other late 80s-early 90s alt/garage rock. It was alright, not really my style 100% but I think teenage me would have loved it, and so I give it an extra star. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Where is My Mind

Two great songs. Pull it up to a 3

Suffers like most Pixies albums from having too much filler crap in amongst some gems

Decent album with a couple of really good tracks

I’m finding it difficult to find the right words to describe Surfer Rosa. I couldn’t recommend it to anyone as a casual listen and yet I want to tell people I like it because, to me, it makes me feel cool that I’m enjoying it. It’s weird at times and great at times but I never felt like skipping a single track. Doolittle has more for a casually listen but I really enjoyed the more experimental sound of this one

My first thought on this album is that it was "okay". Frankly, for some reason, I was surprised to find that it deviated a lot in style from the previous Pixies album I reviewed, Bossanova. I liked Bossanova a lot and I guess I was expecting something similar. I gave it a second listen and found myself enjoying it a bit more when I removed the preconceived expectations I had about it. Surfer Rosa seems to embrace more grunge, noise, and chaos, and ultimately just has a less polished sound. The singing between the vocalists can often be characterized as discordant That said, I can fully tell where this all was intentional and was a sound they were going for here. The album's arrival was timely and obviously influenced other alternative and grunge acts that would emerge in the 1990s. Maybe not a favorite listen, but definitely an intriguing one when given a fair shake!

02/09/2022 Pixies – Surfer Rosa 3.5/5 This is a very raw album, but mostly on the positive side. The roughness, the sharp edges, and the scrappy voices are flaws that give character and personality to the music and is totally understandable why this is a so influential album. The band is having fun and have a lot of energy, and these are great aspects too. Nevertheless, all of these things make the listening a bit unbearable, at least for me. These tracks are not something I would listen to twice on the same day, because they would give me a headache. Additionally, the punk influences and the voices keep me a bit away. Favourite tracks – • Something Against You: all the energy in the universe concentrated in a song. • Gigantic: sounds almost like a pop song. • Where is my mind?: a classic. A great example on how to focus energy and music into a certain feeling. • Oh My Golly!: kind of catchy for a punk song. Less favourite tracks – • River Euphrates: I hate the voices here. • I’m Amazed: not a fan of the guitar on this one.

sous-boulversant

Good for a show, not for casual listening. I usually like speaking tracks but it kind of missed here for me. I also don’t think the album plays like a book reads.

Sparse - lots of "whitespace" Grindy/shoegazy

Boobies?

Can understand and see how they played such a major influence over many artists after them, but a little too unpolished of a sound for my taste.

RAW, this album has never heard of a vocal compressor, guitar sounds fire.

Ihan hauska. Tuli eräs espoolainen orkesteri tästä mieleen.

Didn't make a dent upon release, until Kurt Cobain, PJ Harvey and Billy Corgan sang its praises and suddenly every music critic went back and branded this as the Sgt. Pepper of alternative and grunge. Bonus points for the spoken interludes between (and during) some songs, and the quintessential Pixies song, "Where Is My Mind?" which has become somewhat overused by Hollywood. It's a decent enough effort, there are certainly better Pixies albums (like the follow up to this one). It's just not the Holy Grail Kurt Cobain thought it was.

Just another album. Few songs that are great and I like the Pixies but nothing jumps out to me as YES I love this.

A bit on the 'raw emotion' side. Some class songs. Shannah - 2.5 Jane - 3.5 Bill - 3 Conor - 3.5 (3.125/5)

A distinctive sound, easy to hear their influence on other subsequent bands. If I dig deep and am honest with myself, I don't really enjoy listening to them.

Quiet-Loud is definitely and interesting genre and I think it works rather well for The Pixies. Although the album feels very abrupt at times, the journey of it as a whole felt very intentional. Obviously most people would say the gem of the album is "Where is My Mind?", but I would have to say that "Gigantic" was my favorite song. Kim Deal needed more main vocals on this album I feel.

Raw pre-grunge soft-loud dynamic. Still trying weird things, weird lyrics. Some hit & misses. Kim deal is awesome.

Two bits of sacrilege: 1. Pixies are over represented in this list. This is the third album plus one Frank Black solo album I’ve encountered so far. 2. While bits of this album are undeniably great, other bits (lots, even) are very much not. The answer to both is to prioritise Doolitle.

Quite noisy

First, what a great album cover. Bold and beautiful. Second, this album represents the Pixies getting towards their prime time (i.e., Doolittle). Alas, to Doolittle go the spoils: it's way better an album with many more a song that stayed etched in social memory. Surfer Rosa, in comparison, can only claim to achieve that with Where Is My Mind?

There’s redeeming qualities and songs to this album, but overall it felt too loose and jarring. I’ll say that repeated listens have made this album more tolerable than the first, so maybe it will grow from there. I never really liked for the female vocals, and the male vocals are either spot on or too weird. I understand that might be his style but I don’t care for it. 3/5 Fav tracks: bone machine, break my body, where is my mind Least fav: gigantic, river Euphrates, oh my golly

Listening to this is like trying to pay attention to your drunk friend while he tells what he thinks is an important story, but he keeps getting distracted by shiny objects and also the story was kind of lame in the first place. Best track: Where is My Mind?

"Where Is My Mind" Loved this song, and when I heard it in Mr. Robot, it just solidified that love. The rest of the album is listenable. 3

Eh, it's all right. Another one of those albums and bands that's never really done much for me.

Some nice sounds!

Revolutionary for the mix of noise and harmony which anticipates Nirvana and is very reminiscent of new wave, especially Brian Eno and Pere Ubu.

It has catchy songs, including a mix of heavier sounding ones. I liked it but I guess I’m not as into 80s alt Rick as I used to be because it was not a 4/5 or 5/5 album to me.

3 Pixies albums in this list... seriously, 3 albums?

Just don't vibe with them

I know it’s a very important album but it just isn’t for me

better than doolittle but still a 3. in hindsight i'd rescore doolittle...

Missed the pixies. Good listen

Perfection. A truly incredible, incomparable piece of art. This list could have just been 1 Album You Must Listen to Before You Die and this would have been that album. My review has in no way been influenced by Craig's threat of blade-delivered violence. None whatsoever. FIVE STARS. (Is he gone?? Whew. I like this album a little more the more I listen to it, but I didn't know what the hell to make of it the first time I heard it. I definitely have nostalgia for this type of sound, but I still favor the actual songs of the first half to the last. I may need a few more listens before I really get on board with those. That is, assuming Craig doesn't cut me before I get the chance.)

Try as I might, I struggle to wrap my head around the appeal of this album. There are moments and fragments, but it seems like the band didn't really know what to do with what they had. I give the album 3 stars overall for being fine enough to listen to, and clearly the album has influenced many other artists, but it falls well short of greatness or being something, I absolutely have to hear.

Patchy, but when it works it's fuckin' great.

I like the Pixies, without particularly wanting to listen to their music. Their influence is strong in the rock movement that followed in the 90s, and were ahead of their time. That being said, they love to do this thing that a lot of bands do, which I hate, and that's purposefully play things slightly out of tune just to sound quirky. I stops a good album from becoming a great album.

Great album, ahead of his Time, where is my mind is an absolute Banger! But à bit chaotic

Vamos : polka insane. Et il y a la chanson de Fight Club là.

Great album, WIMM : absolute Banger, But A bit chaotic overall

A 90's album made in the 80's! Who knew? Well alot of people...never got on this bandwagon when I was younger, they're not for everyone that's for sure. But if you watched Fight Club or you're an orange Cassidy fan, you'll know at least one song really well!

This band is like the Fight Club movie, you either love it or you don’t. I’ve tried really hard to like this venerated post punk band but after every listen I still find them just ok. I would rather listen to some Sonic Youth or Pumpkins if I was in the mood for this genre. But I must admit that Frank Black is a great guitarist and he’s a great frontman with lots of energy. Like most folks on this site I think Where is my mind is the best track here, and Vamos was a bit experimental and a nice change of pace, but the rest of the album fails to move me much.

I'd give it a 3.5

Too much incoherent shouting for my liking, familiar with tracks that were later covered by others but those were the pick of the bunch anyway.

Where is my mind

Pixies. Fine, no complaints.

😬not for me but has at least one classic. 3.05/5

It's like being in your high school friend's garage listening to his punk band. This album will appeal to you exactly as much as that idea appeals to you.

'Where is my mind?' e 'Cactus' molto interessanti.

Und daraus nur "Where is my mind". Fand Pixies irgendwie interessant - aber nicht überzeugend. Insgesamt Note 3+

2021.11.23

old school punk where is my mind is the standout track

Frank Black's yelp is unconventional, and possibly off-putting to some; but Surfer Rosa is noisy and exciting, bright and surprisingly melodic. It was probably a really fresh sound at the time. Hot take: "Where Is My Mind" isn't even the best song on this album... "Gigantic" is.

Sound like early precursors to punk rock. I'd heard Where is my Mind? before. That sounds like Modest Mouse

The song I knew was from "Fight Club". The rest of the album was great, very 'in a dive bar that smells like smoke, drinking beer at a small square table by yourself' kinda vibe.

Not on the level of doolitle but lots to like

3,499999999 Punkte

This seems pretty uneven, but the raw feral energy of this album is pretty impressive. Certainly Where Is My Mind, Bone Machine and Gigantic stand out, but there is no dismissing the craziness that becomes a bit more organized when they get to doolittle.

Side one was much more musically appealing.

Big fan of several Pixies songs including a couple on this album but overall this is kind of hard to listen to. Sounds a lot like a few friends got together with some instruments and decided to screw around in the garage.

that one good song from Fight Club

Haven't always warmed to this album but on listening again, it's sharp Albini production

NOt easy to listen at least for me.

Interesting good and a little bit like scramble punk 😄

You know, I hated the opening few songs so much that I never listened to the rest of this album and it gets progressively better as it goes. So that’s kinda cool. Better than I ever gave it credit for.

De jamma!

Weird how I’ve only ever heard Where is my Mind off this album just kidding. Extra points for being only 1/2 an hour long

Revisit, some decent material. Rated 3 stars because I rated the previous albums slightly too highly. Now I have some perspective…

Some songs are quite enjoyable, some contain a bit (way) too much screaming (River Euphrates). Where is my mind? is a classic.

Prefer bossanova

The Pixies feel like a band I should be more familiar, and like more than I do. But the early 90s alternative/grunge scene was never something I ever got into. I never even went through a Nirvana phase. So it's likely they're just not a band for me. Surfer Rosa feels pretty consistent in sound throughout, with "Where is My Mind?" The standout track for sure coming through with a much different sound than most of the rest of the album. Lyrically, I feel like I could give another listen. I picked up on the largely comical feeling of the lyrics, but didn't pick up too many specifics beyond Tony's Theme parodying super here theme songs. Musically you can clearly here the sounds that would influence grunge over the next few years Overall, I think this is an album that would have felt much different when it came out than it does now. After all, I'm not really comparing it to the hard rock sounds that came before it but rather the grunge and alternative scene that came after. But listening to it now, over 30 years after it came out, it doesn't stick with me. It's not off-putting in anyway, it just seems to blend in with the music that came after which I just never really got into. Favorite songs: Where is my Mind?

seemed ok

3 Some good songs like gigantic, river Euphrates, where is my mind. But also some songs that I didn’t really enjoy. Hence why I’ve given a 3.

Great and not so great Songs

Interesting album. "Where Is My Mind?" Is a classic, and heard a couple other bangers, including the title track. Not a huge fan of most of the other tracks.

Not my type of music but isn't a bad album I would give a 3 stars and a half if I could

3.5/5. favs: gigantic, where is my mind

I am terrible and forgot to finish it. From what I heard I didn't like the singing voice(s) very much. Tiddies were good tho

Album Song Ranking: Where Is My Mind? Bone Machine Cactus Break My Body Brick Is Red River Euphrates (H.M.) Vamos (Surfer Rosa) Gigantic Tony's Theme Something Against You Broken Face I'm Amazed Oh My Golly! Additional Comments: This album was very unique and give alternative rock a great look. Personally not much stood out from me from this album, but that does not mean it is a bad album. Overall its pretty neat.

Likte det. punky med kule sanger. Litt forvirra av all partinga i siste delen. 7/10 ??

The first half (up to where is my mind) feels more sincere and sad, while the latter part is more just goofing around in the garage. Actually on second listen the entire thing is really goofy, with lots of messing around (random yelling, silly spanish, just silly riffs) The entire album feels very raw, deliberately unpolished. Maybe too much so for the vocals and guitar, sometimes becomes a bit grating for my taste. Loving the drum and bass sounds though. The songs kind of blend into eachother, except for the obvious standout of Where is My Mind? It was enjoyable enough to listen through, but I don't think I'll be coming back that often.

Listen to the Pixies, first time l have heard them. Even though my grandson in law thinks they are the greatest.

Yeah, I used to fuck with this one as a teenager. It's been a while. The 1001 list already diminished my appreciation of the Pixies (just a tiny bit), by exposing me to The Gun Club, who apparently did this sound better and earlier! I like how the Pixies can be catchy, fun, and even poppy, but still keep the qualities of discordance and noisiness. I guess they are a kind of pivot point where noise rock (interesting that Ambini produced this) started giving way to "noise pop". Anyhow, I actually prefer their next album, Doolittle, and I don't think there's any justification for having both of them on this list. 3.5 for Surfer Rosa.

Decent, I like the style

3/5 Not quite enough for me to buy.

Not as consistent as Doolittle but has some great songs

Lyrics are a bit mental for me.. I dunno.. i’m gonna listen again! But I get it, there is a lot of young raw energy in there… I can totally see how we wouldn’t have are the bands today that we love without these guys! Wish this was out of 10! ;)

Wanted to enjoy this more than I did. Think it probably needs multiple listens for me to get into. Bit shouty for my tastes.

never been a fan of his voice

Ok. Not enough for 4 stars I don't think.

7/10 would like to listen again feel it may grow on me

5/10. Damn, I forgot to review this after listening to it and I pretty much forgot what it was like. Not a great sign since that was less than a week ago. Relistening to a couple songs, 5/10 seems fair.

Bit to rocky for me. Also one song with a guy shouting in the background made me take off my headset

Fun and interesting story. Very grunge punk

Creative.

Definitely a classic

Best wel fijn album met de bekende plaat where is my mind erop

Where Is My Mind is solid, but the rest was...ehh...not so great.

Ok but not really into it

80's punk. Irreverent styling, angst-laden lyrics/vocals with a driving beat typical of the era. A few songs had some good pop hooks, one of them was recognisable hit: "Where is my Mind?". But the one song which instantly grabbed me was "Tony's Theme", which stood out by it's banging background vocals shouting "To" "ny"! The twisted surreal guitars and up-tempo drumming added to the effect, though in truth it sounded like an homage to the Ramones. "Oh My Golly!" featured some of the best drumming from the album, and proved to be a nearly equally fun song on second playthrough. Ultimately, the album is worth a listen. A tribute to is genera and era.

Classic pixies and where is my mind is a legendary song

This is like surf rock on crack, the guitar is a little dirty for me sometimes but WOW yeah this is what rock should sound like. Songs aren't particularly distinguishable from each other until Where is My Mind? though.

1988. Key Songs: Where is My mind?, Tony's Theme, Something Against You

Closer to 3.5, doolittle is a lot better

Outside of "Where Is My Mind," the rest of Surfer Rosa gave me a headache. Very disappointing, because I thought I'd like it. Maybe I'll return to it later and see if it hits differently the second time.

Gave me a headache

Did not really resonate with me.

noisecore

I really liked the album cover, so I wanted to like this album. I usually enjoy alternative rock, but this felt choppy and raw in a decidedly negative way. Most of all, I disliked the voice of the male lead singer, though I did enjoy the occasional female vocals and even liked a few songs. Overall, this was not a great album for me.

Other than Where is My Mind, this is fairly forgettable

im like what the fuck am I listening to rn then theres' where is my mind and cactus and then its back to what the fuck am I listening to

No matter how many times Pixies come up on this generator, I don’t feel any different about them. Not the worst thing I’ve heard, but not really my thing.

Man I just think I don't like punk. this album sorta grew on me but Where is My Mind was the only song I enjoyed. Sorry Pixies. I'm a normie bitch. Fave Song: Where is my Mind

where is my mind

goddamn i've heard good things about Pixies but this was rather insufferable

I just don't get the Pixies. Awful singing, awful guitar tone. I get that it sounds so much like what came after, but I just can't get into it. They're another "you had to be there" band. I bet this sounded amazing in 1988

Other than ‘Where Is My Mind?’ I didn’t really enjoy it. I found the album a little confused and disjointed without clear sound or recognisable theme. But of a racket towards the end.

195. ok

I thought I liked punk but I don't know anymore. Half of this is just shouting.

nothing nothing nothing WHERE IS MY MIND nothing nothing nothing

Not a huge fan of the Pixies, although there were a couple decent ones. The whole bit at the end of Oh my Golly was funny

I don’t think I like the pixies Omg im so sorry

I'll probably revisit this because wrong time and wrong place for this album.

Spotty....some good riffs

Ei jaksa

Never understood the pixies level of popularity. I’ve tried to get into them, just not my thing.

Cohesive. Gillar verkligen det rockiga, men Where Is My Mind känns typ som the odd one out på plattan…

I couldn't really get into this record. I started feeling it more in the last few tracks though. Favourite Track(s): Where Is My Mind? Least Favourite Track(s): Break My Body

Eh, besides "Where Is My Mind?" I wasn't really into it.

So this is what the Pixies sound like. I'll stick to Nirvana.

I think this is too early in the Pixies discography for me. Too raw.

Not very special

Not really my cup of tea. Probably Won’t listen again

The instrumentals were fine I suppose, but the singing was grating and I disliked the pacing.

I didn't really care for this. Something about the sound and production makes it so muddied and boring.

i actually don;t like the pixies very much

Some of the alt rock is fun and enjoyable, some is annoying - shouty singing, redundant lyrics, etc.

Nirvana better rock my fuckin world the day it comes up Standouts: Gigantic • Where Is My Mind?

Few nice songs. Not that great as a whole.

disorienting

I was excited for another Pixies album after enjoying Bossanova so much, but this one was a let down. I can see why they have a solid following, but I was very mixed on this album.

At times, bizarre, disjointed, and rough. Still it was weirdly enjoyable at times and always interesting. It felt more "garage" than say, Nirvana but the theme remains the same.

Except for “Where is my Mind”, which is plenty angsty, the whole album is too angsty for me at this stage in my life. I liked it more when I was 20 when it came out.

The song “where is my mind?” Is a pure masterpiece and saves this album for me. The rest was… a difficult listen as punk rock unfortunately does not appeal to me. I can appreciate that this is good music, just not for me.

Outside of where is my mind, this album was unpleasant and devolved into screaming too often. Most songs are forgettable except Tony's Theme and the previously mentioned hit, but I didn't love the shouting it constantly broke into. Meh.

This album sounds like Sonic Youth if Sonic Youth made bad rock music instead of incoherent garbage noise. +1 for boobies and the song about a cool guy who rides his bicycle.

Was not feeling this one. Wasn’t horrible but there were several songs I just straight up didn’t enjoy. Definitely my least favorite so far, I’m just not into this style I guess.

the rest of this album is nothing like where is my mind, which i've been fond of since guitar hero 3: world tour (2008). kinda recognizing that this list has a strong 70s rock bias. wish id known that before i started. i don't mind a propensity for alt/rock sound, but i recognize the shortcomings and implications of this; excluding genres i want this platform to deepen my appreciation for international/funk/edm/etc. anyway- the album is not a revisit by a long shot. i liked the later half of the album more than the first, with the last track being my favorite of the album. i don't think they had it figured out yet in 88, but i still appreciate their other work.

there are a great pair of cans on the cover art, so thats cool. But everything else? not so much. Its distortion heavy, so good luck picking up vocals when everything is blasting at once, and the in-your-face nature of the genre is just a turn off. Yeah I get you're pissed or want to make a point, but let me at least be able to hear what you're playing. Way too long and drawn out, you really need to let those chords ring on for like 20 seconds? River Euphrates really sullied this whole listen for me.

teleurstellend, where is my mind is wel een banger maar de rest is echt heel vaag

It sounds messy, really messy. Some songs are great.

Not really that memorable for me.

I liked one song that I already knew. Very disjointed album. I dislike repetitive albums but this literally sounds like an album written by different bands,

used to love it not the biggest fan anymore (cd)

Where Is My Mind? trækker lidt op. 1,9

det er altså where is my mind, der trækker et semitungt læs god energi, og jeg kan egentlig godt lide det, men det bliver aldrig 100% mig 2.6

I know this is a classic, but it just doesnt hit me the way I need it to. Frank Black misses me with something. The songs Kim sings on hit, though.

Not much to see here besides Where’s My Mind?

whats japanese fast food? peak my body is peak love the guitar in say but don't yell omg i get it uhuhuhuh oooh who's paul okay ride girl i know that one was that the chorus orrrr they had wheelies in the eighties? okay spanglish what happend to your sister in nj? im not i like this one

Like one good song on this shit

ascaaa

Too grunge for me dog

Meh. I know we're supposed to love how radical the pixies are, but it seems like a lot of whining to me.

Trop alternatif pour moi, même les titres qui auraient pu être sympas virent au crade (excepté l'OVNI Where is my mind, qui ne sait pas lui-même ce qu'il fait là)
