Big sound but a little drifting at times

Hurm. I feel like this album really started killing it at track 7, but before that it was a little sluggish to me (aside from Killer Queen which is a real standout on the album). Freddie Mercury and Brian May's skill at arranging bgvs and guitar licks respectively to evoke that kind of Classical era quality can't be understated. Lots of that texture brought out with V/Vs and leading tone stuff that you don't get as often in a genre dominated by minor pent licks. Brings a different vibe out for sure. I dunno how much of John Deacon's bass work is improvised vs written but if it's the former, that's super cool. Roger Taylor holding it way down. Freddie sure can sing lead, too. Big ass walls of sound and good lead vox. Good album, but I still feel like most of the top half was a little bit lacking in comparison to everything after Now I'm Here. I'd call it a mid/high 3.

classic boomer rock

Came into this project thinking I didn't like Queen, and I didn't mind this album, so I've learnt something today. Eclectic, less pomp than their big tracks.

A few good recognisable tracks. The rest is a bit blah

He’s a bit over the top but it’s not actually bad

Interesting

Great album, personaly love Queen

A good album all-round, but missing the special zhuzh that Queen would become so iconic for later in their careers. As it stands SHA is perfectly fun, if uninspired, classic dad-rock. fav tracks: Killer Queen, Now I'm Here

Queen is the most just listen to the singles bands I’ve found on this list so far. The shocking thing here is that they EVER thought a song as middling and generic as Tenement Funster should make this album. It’s shockingly shit. Why they were like damn Freddie sit out singing on this song. And the result is the most boilerplate shitty hard rock song imaginable. What if we used none of our strengths? Our unbelievably strong singer? Nah. How about our killer harmonies? Fuck that. Brian you have some insane guitar tones…don’t use any of them. I fucking hate that song. It’s worse than any Kid Rock or Limp Bizkit. It’s insane that it exists. Anyway the rest of the album is good. But my god do I hate that song with a passion. Fuck you Roger

Decent album, has some fun tracks. Really only one notable hit being killer queen. Otherwise the rest of it is solid but not noteworthy.

The more Queen albums I hear, the more I realize I really only gravitate to their hits. When they make a banger, they make a BANGER, but I have a hard time getting into their lesser known material. In the Lap of the Gods was my favorite 'new to me' song, but I wasn't wowed by much here.

Has some good hits

Dober dober

Still not a fan though this feels less Queen like at times .

Mostly forgettable songs, only really Killer Queen stands out

It's Queen

Not my favourite Queen album but nice anyway

3/5 Stone Cold Crazy, Now I'm Here e Killer Queen são ótimas faixas. As demais tem a sonoridade padrão do Queen.

Perhaps my most controversial music opinion is that I don't like Queen, and listening to Sheer Heart Attack only strengthened my dislike for the band's music. Every song on this album sounds like an overly intense lullaby, and for me, the songs sort of blurred together into a Queenslop slurry. I still need to figure out why exactly I dislike this album so much. Sure, I can point to the sudden, irritating shifts from one soundscape to another on practically every song, the choruses that sound like fraudulent musical numbers, or overly dramatic (?) orchestration, but my contempt for the parts does not add up to my dislike of the whole shebang. Maybe I just listened to this on a bad day? Look, Sheer Heart Attack is not "hard" to listen to, and it's not an endurance test, and honestly, I kind of like "Bring Back Leroy Brown," but I could live the rest of my life without ever listening to another track on this album and not fare worse (or perhaps, marginally better).

Obviously the musicianship on this is great. There are some true rockers. Brighton Rock for example. Thematically, the songs are kinda dumb. Killer Queen is great but also who cares? It’s questionable whether Leroy Brown should be brought back. Good album musically but just a little too silly lyrically.

Ok album. A little too vintage rock for my taste. I listened to it while doing homework and there were simply too many sounds.

Early queen doesn't have the same impact as the later stuff, though they do make sense as a quirkier more alternative band. Can see why they toured with sparks back in the day. I wouldn't say this is anything more than okay, though it could grow on me a bit with a few listens I think.

Haven't enjoyed either of the Queen albums we've had so far, so didn't have high hopes for this. However, think it was my favourite that we've had. Perhaps a bit heavier in parts? Less look how well Freddie can sing focussed? It's still very much just classic rock to me though. Killer queen is good. Liked stone cold crazy too. Still not a queen convert but worth a 3. 2.5

Not one of the best Queen records, got some real highs like Killer Queen, but overall a pretty forgetable Queen record which doesn't mean its bad. 1. Killer Queen 2. Brighton Rock 3. In the laps of the gods

Okay, this was about as metal as I've heard Queen. A bit uneven, but interesting, let's hit some metal riffs and then switch it into musical cabaret numbers. Really dug Stone Cold Crazy.

Has some bangers but Queen isn't really my thing

Album 4 3/4/26 Yesterday, I said I hope my next Queen album was better than A Day at the Races. Yes, that means I got two Queen albums in a row. Odds of repeating a 3-album artist this early on the process? I reckon it's less likely than 1/500. What did I learn? That I am not really a fan of Queen albums, the same way I can watch a well staged and acted musical and feel like it was still hardly worth my time because the songs were drivel. This one really fell off on the second side. Not a fan of either In The Lap of the Gods. The simple hard rock songs like Now I'm Here and the guitar flashes such as those on Brighton Rock were good, but I'm not sure I have anything else nice to say about the songs I was not familiar with before this listen. Top 3 tracks would be Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy. Really solidlfies my perception of Queen as a singles band, not album crafters. Was it better than A Day at the Races? Firm no, I liked the whimsy and experimentation on the later album first, listening in reverse release order seemed like a regression. I certainly don't hate 1974 rock, this just wasn't my cup of tea. Started off as a mid 3 but sank to a high 2 by the time it was over. Edit: I've decided to spare this album the 2. I knew this was an overreaction at the time, but it just felt right back then. Now, I think it belongs in the 3 club based on how many mid albums I've given 3s to that weren't as good as this

Killer Queen is still one of my favourite songs from them, but the album as a whole is not that great.

- brighton rock - very impressive guitar - killer queen - always a favourite obviously, after hearing it follow brighton rock i feel like it has a different vibe - tenement fuster - entertaining, nothing special - flick of the wrist - best song transition ever? halloween vibes - lily of the valley - another banger transition i did not realise until i double checked, i like the vocals of this one - now im here - feels like im getting ready to do a boxing match, he's real rock-ish in this one - in the lap of the gods - im slow mo running - stone cold crazy - cool transition, he can speak super fast - dear friends - a toast at a wedding - misfire - beginning is beach boys esque - bring back that leroy brown - comedy routine, - she makes me (stormtrooper in stilettos) - chill, probably one of the ones i like the most - in the lap of the gods... revisited - good final song, feels triumphant

kuinn de novo!! FAVS (top 3): lily of the valley, stone cold crazy, in the lap of the gods... mençoes honrosas: brighton rock, bring bac that leroy brown gostei mais desse do q do outro deles q ouvi, tem mais som do q eu considero ser do queen KKKKK nota final: 3.5/5

Queen have a distinct sound , guitars and vocals. That really works in all their classic songs. Not so sure about the fillers

It’s a curious yet entertaining listen. You’re first wondering where Freddie has gone on the first song, then baffled by the constant stylistic changes of May, then battered with thickly layered harmonies. Fair to say they were having fun in the studio and throwing everything at it. Standard song structure often went by the wayside, but that’s no bad thing, and they’ll improve that. Personally I’ve always been a bit bemused about the pop theatrical dynamics of Freddie working with the rock man May. It doesn’t always feel natural as such, but it does work. Personally I prefer it when May gets his riffs on, I’m less moved by the ooo-ooo, aaah harmonies and the more operatic style of Freddie. Always gonna respect them, but never love them.

Not the best album out there, but I can listen to it, without wanting to throw up 👍

They get extra points for being early 70s rock. But there’s far better albums than this.

So much fun

Enjoyed Leroy Brown, and killer Queen. Other than that most of the music did not grab me. Still love Queen though.

Not for me :-)

Most of these tracks flow into each other perfectly so that I can't tell when a new one begins. I had to keep checking my screen to see if it had switched to a new song yet. That's pretty cool that the songs flow that well into each other. My favorite was probably "In the Lap of The Gods (Revisited). - Killer queen: Classic, catchy - Tenement funster: - Flick of the wrist: really cool guitar solos, I liked the way he said the first few lines of the song, it's really funky and has a good beat, very angry - Lily of the valley: very heartfelt, his vocals feel like Orpheus from Hadestown at some parts, it has a very beautiful melody and lyrics - Now I'm Here: this one also feels like a little bit of a petty, angry song, the guitar is YUMMY - In the Lap of The Gods: really cool fade in and out, crazy high notes, it does feel quite godly or otherworldly - Stone Cold Crazy: i really like the fast beat, more classic rock sounding, the ending is fun - Dear Friends: gives the same vibes of blackbird by the beatles, but blackbird is better - Misfire: YUMMY DRUMS AT THE BEGINNING, this is a joyous track - Bring Back That Leroy Brown: this song feels like it's ripped straight from the Whiffles in Crybaby. It feels almost just like squeaky clean. - She Makes Me: the harmonies are quite melodious and mystical, i thought he was gay... - In the Lap of The Gods (revisited): "I can see what you want me to be", i really like the lyrics, i think this revisted version is better than the original

Another Queen album! And again, surprisingly little of the tracklist was familiar; feels like there's a rich vein of discovery with their catalogue. Killer Queen is the obvious early hit (and one of the only tracks I knew going in), and the album starts strong overall. Flick of the Wrist and Now I'm Here (another I already knew) keep the momentum rolling through the middle nicely. The second half is a bit less memorable, though it finishes powerfully by revisiting In the Lap of the Gods.

"Sheer Heart Attack" is Queen approaching their signature sound. Unfortunately, this means that sound-wise it feels like each song is just repeating in a slightly different way. Prominent, of course, is Queen's signature theatricality, which embodies itself in May's rapid-fire vibrato approach, multi-layered vocal orchestration and Freddie Mercury's soaring voice. Yet apart from a few songs, notably "Killer Queen", the star of the album, many of the songs are hard to be distinguished from each other.

Better than expected, with more of a proggy hard-rock edge in parts than most of their biggest hits with which I'm familiar. Much prefer when they are in that mode (e.g. Flick of the Wrist) rather than the bombastic, musical-esque stuff (e.g. Now I'm Here) which I typically associate with Queen and am not really a fan of. There is also some slightly ploddy, ponderous moments (e.g. Lap of the Gods, Dear Friends, Misfire) which are an absolute slog to get through. Overall, a somewhat pleasant surprise with some real standout moments but probably not an album I will return to in full.

Had the hit Killer Queen, otherwise nothing jumped out at me

It was good. Probably should listen more to fully process, but for today it's a 3.

Niet queens beste, maar toch goed om naar te luisteren

I really wanted to rate this one higher than I will, but I can't. May's guitar, the tone, is just unbelievably incredible on this album. I think for me, it might steal the show vs. Freddie. I just feel this pacing on this album is all over the place and it makes it hard for me to get into a groove with it. If we're rating albums, end to end, I can't rate this as high as Opera, which I enjoyed for the most part, sans 2-3 tracks. That isn't to say there's not a lot to like for this album. There is no doubt a wealth of excellence on this beyond "Killer Queen". It's a 3.33 for me. A 3.5 would round up to a 4, so I can't do that. It's a solid album, but not, as a whole, something I'd reach for.

OMG 3 feels low but being so willy nilly w 4s they are losing meaning.....know this is higher than other 3s....i am so sorry

have to become addicted to killer queen ig oops liked this, fun vibe 3.5ish

Lowkey flashy.

This is my first time listening to this particular Queen album start-to-finish. This is pretty good, but my usual criticism of Queen is that the hits are great, but the other tracks are not. So you basically already know all the songs worth listening to, and there's no hidden gems.

Yoo this album low-key slaps. Brighton Road and Lap of the Gods slap, especially in Lap of the Gods where the lyric sounds like it went from my left ear around my head and then to my right ear. But then after lap of the Gods I found the rest of the album alright.

As iconic as this band is, they've always been a greatest hits act for me, and this album, while fun, didn't really change that. Queen have a couple really great tricks up their sleeve. Tight, expressive, and at times baroque arrangements; Brian May's incredible guitar work, Freddie's timeless voice and personality. Occasionally those things combine to make magic, and they did many times throughout their career. This album shows off those parts of Queen, though a bit unevenly. Killer Queen is definitely the standout, the rest of the tracks kind of get lost in a generic 70s rock pastiche. It's definitely a solid album, but not one I'll revisit any time soon. 3/5 from me.

Queen's albums just don't do it for me - high expectations given the quality of their singles. She Makes Me (Stormtroopers in Stilettos) was great though, sounded like Stone Roses (of course, long before Stone Roses came along!)

Stand-out tracks: Killer Queen, Flick Of The Wrist, Misfire, Bring Back That Leroy Brown, In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited Not really sure what to say apart from the fact that I honestly expected more considering that Queen is such a praised band. The hit "Killer Queen" is ofcourse the best track on the album, but the rest was ok, mostly leaving me indifferent. The only thing that surprised me was how much some tracks edge towards darker more minor sounds (beginning of "In The Lap Of The Gods" is a good example of that). Overall just another sort of average listen from the listen, a mix of good, a mix of whatever.

Highlights: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Flick of the Wrist, Now I'm Here Definitely a top 5 Queen record thanks to a great opening, but it is a bit weaker afterwards. This was my first time listening to Tenement Funster and god damn, this doesn't sound like Queen at all (not just because of the change of vocalist). I thought Spotify acted up and started playing something from the Who. Lily of the Valley sounded like a teaser of their following record and I liked it but found it to be too short. Overall very rock oriented record in the context of their discography. I really like that style, which can also be seen from the highlight selection. The second half really bothered me because of many mid tier songs and obvious experimentation in styles - very inconsistent and these experiments are also often cut short (often around 2 minutes). It felt like throwing sh*! at the wall to see what sticks. But it wasn't THAT bad, it works as a Queen record, but the songs aren't something I would listen to outside of that context. Overall a great record, but I don't see myself listening to it as a whole unit all that often. If it was a bit more focused on what it wanted to be and if it didn't fall off in quality the way it did it would have been a 4/5.

Just fine

Este álbum prova que os Queen são um bocado overrated. Álbum nada de especial, para mim, salvo pelo Bryan May e o seu trabalho com a guitarra. Até a música mais conhecida do álbum (Killer Queen) é overrated. É um 3/5.

Got a feeling there may be a few Queen albums in this and I think this is one of the better ones

Really wanted this to be an unknown early masterpiece. But while I enjoyed it, only the first track was novel. A reluctant 3

okay not my type of beat 3/5

Really good Queen album. Not great. Not bad. Right down the middle. I do love stone cold crazy.

Yeh heart defo stopped

Very cohesive album

roger taylor's falsetto is absolutely crazy

I've come to the conclusion that I am not a big fan of Queen outside of their most popular songs. Their album tracks just don't do it for me.

Some hits, ok

I like the bombastic style of Queen, but generally in smaller doses. Give me Killer Queen and Bring Back That Leroy Brown and I’m good for the day. The month?

my favorite song was flick of the wrist. this is really amazing rock music i'm very glad to have given the entire album a listen. 7/10, not a casual rock listener here but this is undenaiably beautiful work.

#842. Not Queen's best albums 3/5: fine

Fine, pretty much. Stand-outs - Killer Queen - Flick Of The Wrist

Queen's great songs are GREAT but this album had a few too many duds for me

Queen has some really high highs and imo some really low lows. Dont love most of the songs on this album

I know it's good but I've heard Queen too much the past few years and I'm kinda sick of it, but it's great

Surprised how much I didn't like this

Liked this a little more than queens second album - but glam rock / guitar solos are just not what I’m into on the whole

I appreciate and recognize the talent and skill that is showed on this album. From the vocals to the instrumentation and the structure of the songs. Mistakenly, I listened to the album on shuffle while I was cleaning. I’m sure I missed an element of the albums structure. However, I don’t think that would change my review much. It’s just not the kind of sound that appeals to me. It sounds like listening to a musical, which I am also not big fan of. I enjoy watching and hearing performances of great skill, but without that sound that appeals to me, it’s not something that can hold my attention for long, or something that I will revisit.

I like this album better than Queen II. Peppier and fun.

Killer Queen: 5 Album: 3.5 I’m gonna start keeping my Moet & Chandon in a pretty cabinet.

Love Queen but def not my favorite of their albums.

Liked the other one better, but sure.

To be honest, this was not my favorite album by Queen.

i don’t listen to this type of music still a great album tho 🫰

A bit bitty.

I liked it, I don’t think I would really listen to it again but it had some tracks that stood out for me: Brighton Rock, Flick of the Wrist, Now I’m Here, Stone Cold Crazy, and Bring Back Leroy Brown. Those songs had a faster pace and great energy to them.

Fun album. Has a few hits, but some of the other songs aren’t quite the same quality. Overall, it’s good. 3/5 Might listen again

Probably not my favorite Queen album

This was a fun window into a moment in their journey.

I love Queen but wasn’t blown away by this album- I think they have better ones. Just okay for me!

3⭐️/5 01.14.2026

Really enjoyed parts of this album, but it feels like they didn’t quite know what they wanted to be when they recorded this album.

Decent. Not a huge fan of the style.

Not really my style, but really Intresiting guitar riffs, and interesting production and effects. I can appreciate the intention of the album and the continuity of the songs one after the other.

Sirius Black… 🚬

A couple hits up front carry the album. Overall pretty good

i need to stop listening to these albums while doing other tasks and Focus but who has time for that

"6/10" - baeli "7/10" - robert

An album from queen will always be good! I really liked the song “she makes me”

Pretty good rock album, we can clearly hear the album A night at the opera in the making. I like Now I'm Here, Killer Queen and Misfire

J'aime la vibe

Classic rock, a little harder than I expected from Queen

Its Queen, its obviously good. That said, I do not feel blown away by the album in any particular way. This feels very similar in several aspects to other albums by other bands coming out around the same time. Lacking (in my case) historical context to what Freddie may be singing about also tends to leave me feeling nothing strong about the album. I do not know, at the time of typing this, what order any of the other classic rock albums I get reminders of came out so I will not hold this against the album, BUT, I get strong reminders of Boston, early Rush, and Wall era Pink Floyd. Aside from Freddie's voice and some obvious Brian May-ism on the guitar, I wouldn't immediately pick this out as Queen. My review could be utter horseshit, as I stated I lack context for the time this was written and don't know off the top of my head who did what first. Good album overall, just didn't feel blown away.

Liker noe her

3.75 dad made it seem like it would suck

Maybe the only other queen album I’ve heard it in entirety aside from night at the opera. Brian and Fred announce their virtuosity right off the bat and I can imagine loving this album if you’re really into what they do. I felt like I was listening to the soundtrack for a play I hadn’t seen interspersed with some generic seventies rockers. A few highlights- killer queen, stone cold crazy- but this generally confirms that I’m not too interested in queen best their (mostly excellent) singles. I never really understood why all the metal bands loved queen so much but stone cold crazy is a metal blueprint. I wasn’t at all surprised to see that Metallica has covered it several times.

not my favorite genre. well it's just hard to get into because it is different than what i'm used to. i am open to getting more into it. one song i liked was tenement funster. despite killer queen having a billion streams, idt i've ever heard of it. anyway im still glad i listened

Killer queen - เพลงฮิต Tenement funster, Flick of the wrist - เฉยๆแต่ก็ถูกจริตกว่าเพลงอื่น Misfire - ความรู้สึกแปลกๆดี เหมือนเวลาฟัง david bowie ผสม daryl hall ผสม america Bring back that leroy town - คล้ายๆ jeeper creeper, 50s-ish

Mid Queen

It's okay. I just don't love a full Queen album.

1.Brighton rock so far is extremely fun very stimulating also I love the guitar solo also the part that I think starts at 3:43 and ends 4:24 is extremely interesting to me 2. I already knew killer queen before so this wasn’t new to me but in general I love the vocals in this and the instrumentals too bc they’re as creative as possible also I know this is only the second song but this also has a guitar solo I wonder if that will be ongoing thing 3. I hate the intro so far yeah ts isn’t my type of song but the raspy vocals sound so good I just don’t like the song in general so far and this also has a guitar solo I love the ooh ooh ooh that the other group members are doing in the background and the harmonizing in general 4. the instrumentals in this are fire and the vocals too oh my god this gives me like spooky vibes in the best way possible also love the background vocals in this one I absolutely love this and this also has a guitar solo this is my favorite so far and also the first one that I added to my playlist 5. the transition to this song was so smooth and those vocals are genuinely amazing this song is so ethereal okay wow this is really beautiful this also has a guitar solo if it counts as one I don’t know 6. love the harmonies and the instrumentals are insane I love that one talking line and yes you guessed what I was going to say another guitar solo but I love it I just noticed that this song like switches ears 7. this gave me a jumpscare when it started but it sounds so good so far oh my god this is heaven lowkey kind of creepy I don’t know if that makes sense this is the perfect second song I’m adding end is kind of repetitive also has a guitar solo 8. the start of this is already insane oh my god this is so fun I love it I’m obsessed another guitar solo not that I’m complaining Queen is officially the most genius group I know third song I’m adding 9. oh sounds like a sad song okay it is I have tears in my eyes I mean it’s not really a sad song but I resonate with it 10. love the intro this gives me summer vibes so far it’s fun it’s good but not good enough to add I feel like love how it fades out 11. this also jumpscared me but this is so fun might even be the funnest so far also I’m adding this because it sounds so good with headphones the ending I absolutely love it 12. this will be a sad song oh no it’s a love song I got it wrong so far I need to brutally say it’s boring yeah not a single thing has changed and we’re already two minutes in and I don’t really think anything will very repetitive I don’t hate it I just think it’s very boring compared to the other songs ending is pretty interesting 13. so far it’s the perfect ending song it feels so lightweight I don’t know how to describe it like it’s not dreamy but it’s just sound like being peacefully alive fifth song I’m adding okay the ending scared me

Not my favourite kind of music. I recognised a few and I did enjoy it.

I prefer this era of Queen, sounds raw and the guitar rips. Some of the vaudeville and ballad stuff is a bit dated, doesn’t have the emotional heft of later big hits. Overall a great fun listen.

Alright but not their best

After loving Queen II, this one was a bit disappointing. It has some good songs, but never hooked me like the other. 3/5

Highlights: Brighton Rock, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy

I don't know what to think. It was pretty fun but also repeatable at the same time. After Brighton Rock I expected more to be honest. It's so hard to rank because i don't know many Queen songs and it's just not my cup of tea but i'm still open to other albums from the band My fav songs: Brighton Rock, Flick Of The Wirst, In The Lap Of The Gods

13 Songs 38 minutes. Killer Queen is an absolute banger and classic. Stone Cold Crazy is another great. The rest is meh it’s varied but it is 70’s glam rock. A genre I like but this seems to be too much of a good thing. The vocals are muddy and the guitar blends together. 3/5

Not super familiar with this queen album, such a fun sound, really enjoyed!

Another Queen album I've never heard before. Not bad but not too many songs that stand out for me. Really maybe 3 songs that really stood out and only one hit.

Hmm ça reste queen et merci pour certains sons mais la y’a vraiment rien qui m’a fouetté les prods sont cool je dirais l’intro est cool de mémoire mais honnêtement c’est 2,5/5 et encore je suis gentil c’est queen

This was pretty solid, definite preference for the A side. Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, and Flick of the Wrist were th standouts to me.

I’ve listened to Sheer Heart Attack plenty of times. Yet every listen leaves me feeling like a flustered contestant on The Generation Game. The conveyor belt has introduced and spirited away plenty of shiny consumer novelties, but I struggle to remember any of them. Thus, I never win the big prize. The shininess recalls nothing less than the Beatles’ Red Album singles. George Martin’s background in comedy and novelty records shaped the Beatles’ early work in a way that went beyond polish: he understood how glitz and clarity could turn raw talent into irresistible seven-inch singles. The band's earliest advantage may not have been talent, but the capacity to be funny - quick, performative, radiating charm on radio and in photographs. That humour bought them time. Singles became albums, and albums became arenas for collective artistic development. Sheer Heart Attack shows Queen arriving at a superficially similar place by very different means. Roy Thomas Baker’s production gives the record a uniform brightness, a sense that everything must register immediately. Where Martin gradually allowed the Beatles’ records to deepen, darken, and roughen, Baker keeps Queen on a permanent high gloss. Nothing is allowed to linger; every track feels engineered to function independently, as though already extracted from its context, prepped for a Greatest Hits. The album does not unfold: it presents itself in pieces. Like the Beatles, Queen is a band of writers, and this plurality initially suggests dialogue. On Sheer Heart Attack, however, the effect is the opposite. The variety of voices does not accumulate into a shared language; it fragments into a sequence of impeccably realised impressions. Everything sounds like pastiche. Bring Back That Leroy Brown is music hall, Killer Queen baroque camp. Even when they are creating heavy metal in its infancy, as on Brighton Rock, it - somehow - isn’t heavy. At the same time, Now I’m Here nods toward Elton John; Misfire toward Steely Dan. Of course, Queen make no claim of ownership over what they play. Nor of sincerity. Even Taylor’s lead vocal Tenement Funster reads as a parody of a Mercury performance, so that, when it morphs into the Mercury-sung Flick of the Wrist, the transition is almost imperceptible. The Beatles’ stylistic range, by contrast, always felt inhabited. Their pastiches - vaudeville, Indian classical, psychedelia - were absorbed into a developing group sensibility, conveying wit, humour, and character. Queen resist that absorption. On Sheer Heart Attack, they are always imitating rather than inhabiting, treating musical styles as costumes. Mercury’s voice and May’s guitar unify the surfaces, a brand logo stamped across a diverse portfolio of products. The album is less a band discovering itself than a machine demonstrating its range or a company branching into different markets. It may sound dismissive to call Queen mechanistic, but there is definitely something absent in their process. For one, unlike the Beatles, Queen isn’t funny. Three-quarters of the group are engineers, astronomers, and dentists. Mercury carries almost all theatrical responsibility: charismatic, fluent, fearless, sure, but not funny in the way the Beatles’ were. They engaged with banter, they were witty and surreal, humour that plays with meaning. His humour is camp, operating on surface, image, and reference, with little depth or dynamic. His lyrics often aim for wit but settle for accumulation. Killer Queen illustrates this clearly. Its musical excess is charming, but the lyric diffuses. Rhyming “address” with “baroness” is neat, but hardly witty. Lines trail off into fragments, as in "Then again incidentally if you’re that way inclined," which offer no clear referent and resist interpretation. It is a pastiche of Cole Porter that believes it can work less hard than the original to get the details right. But that is the crucial element of the thing being pastiched: precision. But Mercury is too big for that. Because Queen lack the Beatles’ internal balance, Mercury’s excess carries disproportionate weight. When it coheres, it produces spectacle; when it does not, it exposes a shallowness that Baker’s surface brilliance only accentuates. Sheer Heart Attack, for all its energy, never becomes a complete album in the way mid-period Beatles records do. It showcases a set of possibilities rather than a collective voice. In retrospect, Bohemian Rhapsody, which comes later, feels like Queen’s attempt to compress Beatles-style album logic into a single track: multiple modes, dramatic contrasts, and, crucially, cohesion imposed by Mercury rather than the cohesion of the group. This difference helps explain Queen’s peculiar longevity. The Beatles function as an organism, their catalogue rewarding immersion and historical listening. But the group dynamic and the business broke them up. Queen function as a generator of moments, a singles machine that never breaks up. In a streaming era that rewards instant recognition over narrative depth, Queen’s model proves remarkably adaptive. Their catalogue eclipses the Beatles not just in monthly streaming listeners but in sheer longevity: after Mercury’s death and Deacon’s withdrawal, the machine continued. Like a monopolistic conglomerate, Queen stamped their brand across genres, claiming none except in the sense of gathering dividends from all of them. 2.5 I like Sheer Heart Attack well enough but it’s not an album I have paid any great attention to. I don’t know that it supports much attention. It is both less ridiculous and less interesting than its predecessor. It is the sound of Queen as we all enjoy them from their greatest hits - genre diversity, spectacularly overwrought vocals and guitars, endearingly frivolous songs. They would do this album again, slightly better. I do like the cover though, and the fact that I can’t type the title of the album without first automatically typing ‘Christ’ as the middle word. 2.5/5

Better than I was expecting but still not something I would go out of my way to listen to again. Freddy Mercury’s voice is a little too whiny for my taste in a few of the songs and a couple songs sound like circus music but there were several that had awesome guitar riffs that really rocked.

nice classic

Has that unique queen sound. Songs quite easy to forget, some being a little boring (She Makes Me). Best song on the album in my opinion is Killer Queen.

It’s a mix of a few perfect amazing songs like stone cold crazy, Brighton rock, killer queen and flick of the rust with a bunch of kinda trash songs.

Decent album offering from a band I thought was more of a Greatest Hits specialist. 3.5/5

this was fun

Better than Coldplay

Was ok

Bring back Leroy brown - 👐 emoji Usually like Queen but this was a bit noisy for me

nota: 75

Hands, Anyway, Killer Queen is a fun song and the rest of the album has a general boogy vibe to it, but they don't leave me with any solid impression. Most of the songs are forgettable.

never really listened to queen, enjoyable

not my fave queen album but still quite good

Definitely a well above average rock record, Freddie Mercury is singular, but Brian May is the hero here for me. So much cool guitar stuff going in, pre-Van Halen stylings, guitarmonies, all that good stuff. A fun trip, not a lot of standout tracks for me but I enjoyed it!

Fun rock opera on its A Side. Sluggish on it's B side. Favorite tracks Killer Queen Flick of The Wrist Now I'm Here Stone Cold Crazy

Surprised by some parts of this, some really nice jams. Queen just arnt really for me still

Moving away from the progessive sound towards the Quen sound,

Heard previously 08-29-22

Interesting vocals. Fun drum rolls. Riffs with personality

I was expecting to recognise more than one song...

#17 Has "Killer Queen" but all the songs here start to blend and sound the same

The musicianship is very impressive but there’s so much going on

Couple of classics, but mostly meh.

It was fine

There are a lot of early-70s rock band clichés here: heavy glam, guitar for the sake of guitar, some bloat. And the lyrics are so insubstantial. I might like “Flick of the Wrist” most? But even it won’t be going on heavy rotation in my life.

When people ask what my favorite Queen album is, I usually tell them Sheer Heart Attack. A Night at the Opera seems a little too obvious, and A Day at the Races just doesn't hit the same. That being said, revisiting this I was surprised by just how weak the B-side is. Stone Cold Crazy remains incredible, but almost all of the other tracks on that side are incredibly forgettable. The A-side makes up for it at least, being comprised of some great glammy tracks like Flick of the Wrist, Now I'm Here, and of course Killer Queen. I still think I would say the sound they are going for here is my favorite of any of their albums, but after Stone Cold Crazy I almost feel inclined to just leave the rest be and move on.

6/10 Queen’s third album. Can they disabuse me of the notion that they are a singles band, rather than an album band? Lets see. From the opening track, this kind of feels like there are some fantastic raw ingredients in the mix, but that they haven’t quite harnessed them into a completely satisfying and coherent whole just yet. The fact that we then jump into the album’s one true classic kind of reaffirms that opinion. When they find their stride and swagger, they can really pack a punch, but those moments are a little too thin on the ground on this album. I feel like Queen are kind of finding their feet here, and there are little touches of compositional and production techniques that would define their sound in the years to come, but are not necessarily the most refined at this point. As we progress through the rest of the album, it feels stylistically, a bit all over the place. A pop song here, a heavier rocker there and a dip into prog up next. There’s nothing wrong with experimentation and variety of course, but it does make for a slightly disjointed listen. There are some sections that flow nicely though. Tenement Funster through to Lily Of The Valley flow really nicely together and hint that there is potential for the band to develop their sound and production techniques into a more rewarding album band. Perhaps that comes with albums that follow this one? Freddie’s voice is absolute magic as always, and even when they’re drifting off piste a little, they undeniably sound like Queen. There are some moments of exquisite quality, moments of almost ridiculous lunacy, but also a few too many moments of wayward idea throwing and the occasional dip into drudgery. When they get it right, they get it oh so right, but they’re a band that seems happy to experiment, have some fun and then, when the stars align, produce some of the greatest songs ever written. Unfortunately, there was a little too much of the former and not enough of the latter to really keep me connected to this one. It was good, it just wasn’t great. Brighton Rock - This is a decent opener. It’s got some solid, heavy moments and some great riffs. It perhaps loses its way a little bit when it gets a bit too noodly, Freddie’s part is fairly limited here, but that riff at the end is quality. Killer Queen - An absolute classic. From an album point of view, it’s quite the change in tone. But besides that, this is chock full of hooks, that very specific Freddie Mercury swagger in the vocal delivery and that unique Brian May guitar work. The well positioned backing vocals and harmonisations are fantastic, and there’s a lot going on here production wise too. It’s got that edge of weirdness despite being , at its core, a brilliant pop song. Tenement Funster - This is great. It’s got more quality riffs and the vocal has a great bit of edge and bite to it from Roger Taylor. The delivery of ‘gimme a good guitar’ is perfect. There’s some proggy edge to this one too and some interesting use of effects. It’s also got a really solid, driving groove to it. Flick Of The Wrist - And we transition beautifully out of the last one into a Freddie led work. It’s definitely got its quirky moments and it transitions between almost 70s metal, via prog to some quite poppy moments in places. It’s wacky, interesting and sounds great. There’s just so much going on! Lily Of The Valley - Another seamless transition into more of a ballad. Freddie’s vocal is great (quelle surprise). It builds and falls, has solid harmonies and still allows Brian May to do his little bit of characteristic guitar work too. Nice. Now I'm Here - A nice build into this, with some cool little panning and delay effects. And then we kick into a nice driven groove of a track. Some elements of this are great. There are some great riffs, particularly in the non vocal sections, and some solid drumming, but it doesn’t really grab hold of me the whole way through. In The Lap Of The Gods - You can hear elements of Bohemian Rhapsody in here, with the dynamic changes, piano led parts, vocal harmonisations and more. It’s obviously a lot more raw and not as fully developed, but you can hear this kind of work developing into something more later down the line. It’s decent enough, and there are some really nice sections, but there are bits that get a bit repetitive, and others where it drifts a little too much. Stone Cold Crazy - Ah, what a solid riff. This is pretty much an early metal song with Freddie Mercury on vocals and it’s great. Those little touches they thrown in to their compositions (like the cut out to the ‘stone cold crazy’ vocal harmonies) are so much fun. It’s a simple but effective rocker of a track. Dear Friends - A lovely little Freddie interlude and I’m always happy to hear him sing. It’s very pretty, but gone in an instant. Misfire - This is a proper pop-rock number. It’s reasonably catchy and incredibly chirpy. It’s got good pace and a toe-tapping drive to it, but it ultimately feels a bit of a chuck away pop song rather than anything with more substance. Bring Back That Leroy Brown - Do you remember that time when Queen got together with George Formby and wrote a song that sounds incredibly reminiscent of ‘Knees up mother Brown’? Well luckily they recorded it and put it on this album for the sake of posterity. Despite that, it’s brilliantly wacky, very catchy and so well put together. It feels very, very silly, but it’s executed so well that it’s still super enjoyable. She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettoes) - This is quite ponderous and boring. It just doesn’t go anywhere or do anything, and it’s got Brian May on lead vocals, so it doesn’t even have that sparkle of Freddie magic to free it from the drudgery. Big old bucket of meh. In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited - And we return to the themes of In The Lap Of The Gods from earlier. More foreshadowing of Bohemian Rhapsody, but this is a bit more coherent than the earlier take on the track. It’s very, very good actually. It soars and dives, it’s got great riffs, some quality gang vocals and closes that album out really well.

It was alright. The guitar absolutely ripped.

Killer Queen yeah but there are overall too many operatic/theatric touches in their Music for me to really get into Even back when they were my Favourite band I only owned Greatest Hits. OK, I had The Works too. But then right at the end, tbf. Stormtroopers in Stilettos strumming sounds like about 20 BJM songs so have to respect that...+1!

This was a real mixed bag. Killer Queen is classic Queen, In the lap of the gods was a strong outro, but then you also have misfire which is a strong contender for worst lyrics of any song on this list Don’t you know honey that love’s a game? It’s always hit or miss so take your aim, Gotta hold on tight Shoot me outta sight That is A-class awful stuff. Better than Queen II, with nice harmonies in places, but not something I’d ever feel the urge to listen to again. I’m so over the number of “progressive” 70s rock albums on this list. I’m done with meandering guitar solos. I can see why punk needed to happen.

Queen has always seemed more like a song band than an album band to me. Brian May shreds on the opener. Tenement Funster is 10 years ahead of it's time - that song is pure mid-80's arena rock. Overall it's just alright

Queen albums kinda disappoint, there’s a couple good songs but overall not my favorite

Even when Queen isn't that good, they're still pretty good.

Fun few tracks. Drags through the middle tho

Not my favorite Queen album but has some bangers

Brian may has really good guitar on here. In another life he’s a heavy metal guitarist. Freddie is incredible at writing compositions and overall it was enjoyable to listen to. They have very unique and impressive music components at times. However when it is all put together it doesn’t really do it for me. It has too much of a musical vibe to it. Which I get is the point but oh well. Still a good album. Fav song killer queen and tenement funster

Queen is one of those bands that can write an amazing song, but can't seem to put together a great album. This is not one of their best. They have plenty of ideas but don't quite deliver on any. The upside is they gave us three great songs on this one, Stone Cold Crazy, Now I'm Here, and Killer Queen. The rest of the album is average at best and pretty forgettable.

great album. but good queen album.

Killer Queen is fantastic. The rest of the album was a nice listen but nothing stood out. 3.5

wet queen! some of the best work despite the comparative lack of hits

Killer Queen is an extremely fun song but unfortunately head and shoulders above the rest here

It's fun in an 'everything but the kitchen sink' kind of way but after three of their albums, I think I can safely say that Queen are one of those bands where I'm fine sticking to the Greatest Hits.

this is more my speed, the first album i've actually listened to all the way through before this project, but it's not my favorite Queen. none of these tracks are on my playlist anymore (even despite Baby Driver). favorite song: Killer Queen

In light of the Queen biopic being released, I’ve had real Queen fatigue. This was refreshing, getting to dig into the b-sides and hear a complete work. There’s no doubt Queen rocks and are rife with talent but this has made me realize how well they use the studio. Their music has tricks and gimmicks that pull the listener in. Despite all that praise, I can only muster a three for this album. Good, not great.

I really enjoyed this, some of those guitars wow.

I've discovered that full album Queen just isn't the same as Greatest Hits Queen. I live "Killer Queen," it's one of their best, but so much of this album is just OK for me. It's better than Queen II, the songs are tighter and more concise, but the melodies are kind of limp and the production is again overstuffed, every space filled, without allowing the songs to breathe. That's just what Queen is/was but the songwriting doesn't elevate it despite Mercury. May, et al trying their best.

Solid effort, operatic and cool, but also not groundbreaking. Killer queen being the hit is not surprising but the rest of the songs are fine, but they kinda bland together, and with the rest of their stuff. I do wish there was a little more experimentation, something to set them apart, cause I kinda feel I heard that before.

En realidad salvo por encima, no lo he escuchado.

Prettyyy disjointed. Queen not really a full album listen kinda band maybe. Glimpses of greatness.

I’ve always been kind of neutral on queen. After this album, I remain so.

I liked some of the rock opera stuff. In The Lap Of The Gods was captivating. The sequencing between tracks was perfect across the entire album. The run through Stone Cold Crazy, Dear Friends, Miss Fire and Bring Back That Leroy Brown was fantastic and worth the listen

Not the best by Queen

Entire album wasn't my jam, but overall a nice listen. Classic Queen sounding album, and Killer Queen was great to listen through. Not my favorite Queen song, nor favorite album. Upon some basic searching, Sheer Heart Attack was the first album with a "hard rock" and "glam rock" edge, and away from prior "prog rock" sounds. If this album is where that classic Queen sound begins, then it makes a lot more sense why the album is a must listen.

Decent album

Bit too glam rock for me. Some good tracks.

After many relistens, I've come to the personal conclusion that this is okay. Specifically that the beginning of the album through ~about the halfway point is outstanding, but it really deflated after that. Still though, a nice enough listen. 3/5

I’ve always loved “Killer Queen”, overplay has never killed it for me. Just a perfect little song. I’m sure I’ve heard “Now I’m Here” and “Stone Cold Crazy” before, but they were essentially new listens for me and I dig both of them quite a bit. Taylor’s songs continue to get better with every record, as “Tenement Funster” is a winner in my book, and for the second album in a row, May also provides a solid lead vocal on another favorite, “She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)”. May - again, perhaps unsurprisingly - is absolutely stellar on this record, as is Deacon, who particularly shines on “Misfire”. There are just a few too many songs that have the “but” factor for me. I think “Brighton Rock” is a near perfect song, with a highly adventurous arrangement and insane guitar work from May, but - and I don’t know if this is heresy - the vocals bring it down a bit for me. The falsetto doesn’t work, in my opinion. “Flick of the Wrist” has a lot of cool moments and some great drumming from Taylor, but it’s just a bit too theatrical for my tastes. Like “Brighton Rock”, “In the Lap of the Gods” is a near perfect song that I love *almost* everything about…but man, as technically impressive as it is, that impossibly high vocal from Taylor that kicks off the song and reprises halfway through really puts me off. The “Revisited” version I quite like, though. The only song that I flat out didn’t like was “Bring Back That Leroy Brown”. It’s expertly crafted and arranged, and props to them for that, but I was not vibing with it whatsoever. Overall though, the 38 minutes flew by, so it definitely has some nice replay factor. 3.5/5

This album came out when I was 16 and the song Killer Queen was played endlessly at high school keggers. The album establishes the sound that would prove to be highly successful on albums such as A Night at the Opera.

Heavier than expected, impressive as expected, not for me (as expected).

2.5 for me

Queen is definition of a singles band. Nothing wrong with that as a band, lots wrong with that when trying their albums out.

I appreciate the album but it’s not one I’d reach for often on my own.

Queen is such an amazing band. Theatrical, choral, + raging rock and roll. This album is a good example of their sound. But the theatricality drowns out the rocking-ness a little too much. There’s 1 or 2 bangers, and other would-be bangers get smothered by production and drama. A 3.

Just into the Queen sound... two or three really solid tunes and a couple experimental-pop...

Queen may be one of the most famous bands, but my memories of youth at a bar owned by a woman named New York 44th Street are simply too vivid, and they seem to intersect with my first encounter with Queen.

neloš sound ali nisam prevelik fan, trojka

This one was a little all over the place for me, the low start of "Brighton Rock" into the amazing "Killer Queen" then floating along alright until plunging into the the awful depths of "In the Lap of the Gods" into the immediate turnaround of "Stone Cold Crazy" goodness and then finishing out with more gentle ups and downs. A lot of the songs I didn't necessarily love but even most of those were buoyed by those incredible Freddie vocals. While I liked the whole of it overall, ultimately I just can't imagine turning this on over a Queen's greatest hits, which reduced the start rating a little more than I was initially considering. Best: "Killer Queen" Worst: "In the Lap of the Gods"

Highlights (Tenement Funster, Misfire, Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy) Lowlights (Brighton Rock, In the Lap of the Gods 1&2, She Makes Me) I would Call myself a Queen fan but like a basic white boy fan. I know their stuff that played on the radio, their hits. So when I looked at this album and only saw Killer Queen that I recognized I didn’t know whether to be worried or excited. And let me tell you the first song on this album made me worried. Brighton Rock was by far my least favorite song on the album. It starts with a weird carnie soundboard and when the vocals kick in I can tell it’s Queen. A lot of the sounds of Queen hits are in this track…just mashed together in a discordant soup. I immediately became defensive. Is this Queen’s Hunky Dory? Meaning is this an album from performers I like that misses the mark for me. Is it the humble beginnings of their greatness? We then go right into Killer Queen. Banger end of story. I’m still defensive because Killer Queen could be the Changes song from Hunky Dory. The only song to make it off a otherwise unimpressive album. Then my worries were sated at least for now. Tenement Funster plays and I immediately love it. Great guitar twang and doing some research after the fact says that Roger Taylor (the drummer) sang the song. I loved his voice. For the next two songs I’m pleased Flick of the Wrist is a song I enjoyed enough. Wouldn’t seek it out but would dance if its on and Lily of the Valley is a weird song but didn’t overstay its welcome and Freddie’s voice made me like it more than I normally would. Now I’m Here starts strong but overstays its welcome. Probably wouldn’t seek this song out but wouldn’t skip it necessarily. Now at this point, I’m wondering is this gonna be my first 4. So far only 1 skip, Brighton Rock, can Queen bring it home for me? Then In the Lap of the Gods begins to play and Queen decides to put a vocal effect on Freddy’s voice and then the song never gets better. Second skip. That’s okay because we are right back into a banger with Stone Cold Crazy some great guitar riffs, albeit a bit simple, and fun drum fills. It makes its way to amongst the cream of the crop with Funster and Killer Queen. Then Dear Friends plays. This song does nothing for me and doesn’t go for very long but is a skip overall. But again that’s okay because we find ourselves at my 2nd favorite song on the album Misfire. Fun, short, sweet. Loved it. Leroy Brown is an odd one but again not a skip. Has an odd showtoon-esque vibe but it…works. Wouldn’t seek it out but would listen to it if it came on. Now is where tragedy strikes. At this point I was still ready to give this album a 4. Only a handful of skips and some certified bangers. However, She Makes Me plays and this song sucks. It firmly unseats Brighton Rock at the bottom and then some. This song I suppose marches along based on the alternate title (Stormtroopers in Stilettos) but goes no where that I want to be. And then they get a second shot at In the Lap of the Gods and….its fine. Still a skip but certainly a better song than its predecessor. So where does that Leave Hunky Dory… I mean Shear Heart Attack. This was tough because I have my scale know where it lands but I really really like the 4 songs (Tenement Funster, Misfire, Killer Queen, and Stone Cold Crazy) and many others that are supremely competent songs that just don’t vibe with me today. Songs I would certainly listen to if the mood arises but wouldn’t seek out. I thought about breaking the rules for Queen but I am certain this is not the last we have heard of Queen and I’m sure they will come back and earn their 4 or even 5 later.

it's fine. it's very theatrical and maximalist and i'm just not huge into that sort of music. it sounds like something i'd find in "villian oc" playlist which iykyk. i can sorta see my younger self liking this stuff but now? ehhhh. the songs are so over the top that they kinda just blend together. not for me

This is a step below 'A Night At The Opera' for me but is still really fun. Killer Queen is, of course, incredible but nothing much stood out from it besides that.

Got some hits but the rest are weak

I mean it's quality stuff, I'm just not that big on the genre

fav: Flick of the wrist,Brighton Rock Misfire

starts strong ends just ok clearly not their best work but still good top song Flick of the wrist

Queen’s Sheer Heart Attack finds the band tightening the screws after the sprawling Queen II, delivering a more focused and heavier sound without shedding their eccentric streak. The glam pomp is still intact—just listen to the chaotic carnival of “Brighton Rock” or the operatic excess of “In the Lap of the Gods”—but it’s tempered by a newfound punch and precision. “Killer Queen” is a perfectly prissy slice of campy pop genius, “Tenement Funster” channels Zeppelin swagger with a silkier edge, and “Stone Cold Crazy” rips ahead like proto-thrash, years before Metallica made it a calling card. Even the tender “Dear Friends” shows their knack for miniature elegance. This is Queen sharpening their theatrical ambitions into something leaner, louder, and more dangerous.

The songs I loved outweighed the ones I didn't care for. I've listened to Queen before and this album definitely is their outbreak album. I liked a lot the guitar solos and Freddie is iconic as ever. 6/10

Solid from start to finish.

like it but not as much as the other albums I have

In torn on this. Musical artistry is absolutely stellar. Freddie's voice is amazing. Brian's guitar is phenomenal. Song writing and composition is just on another level. But for me, it's just too much everything. So although I appreciate the artistry, and I'm glad I experienced this album, I don't see myself ever going back to this. Overall I just didn't enjoy it.

Ok. 3.49

But their best but still Queen.

It felt more rock orientated for Queen. It had some bangers on there, but I can’t get into it for some reason. I can’t relate to anything on it.

Obviously, it's flawlessly constructed - it's Queen. Freddie Mercury's vocals are out of this world and Brian May's guitar work is excellent. Sadly, that's not enough to salvage a pretty forgettable bunch of songs. Much of the album borders on some sort of strange thespian flavored rock and roll, which I find pretty annoying. Despite the objective quality of their craft, even Queen's best work doesn't do much for me, and this record is not among their best.

Decent with a few bangers

Funnily enough I don’t actually have too much to say on this one. I think Killer Queen is potentially my favourite ever Queen song, but apart from that I found there to be little in terms of standout tracks, and I didn’t find myself feeling too entertained with the remainder of the album either. Felt quite middle of the road for me to be honest.

I ended up listening to this album quite a few times and the more I listened to it the more it grew on me. Not the best of Queen for sure, but it is a fun listen. That's about all I can say about it though, there isn't anything standout about it, some fun guitar solos and some good drumming but nothing that makes you go wow I'm afraid. However, I do think that the distinct Queen sound stands out and for that I am grateful.

I wish Queen albums flowed better. The banging hits placed next to the theatrical opera pieces have never worked for me entirely. I'm not saying I don't like them. I love them, but as an album so rarely do they work to me ears. Maybe that why I love their live albums so much?

Overwhelmingly baroque and flamboyant – and not in a good way, as if they thought glam/arena rock was insufficiently theatrical and self-indulgent. There are a few decent tunes. "KIller Queen" is great and catchy and stops just short of being overdone. "Misfire" is the simplest, and most straightforward song on the entire record (and among the best). "She Makes Me" also shows how a little restraint might've elevated them, as does the finale. FM had a singular voice and they were ahead of their time production-wise. And every song offers something (choruses in "Leave it in the Lap of the Gods," cooing background harmonies on "Flick of the Wrist,"), but most have way too much. "Tenement Funster" would be a welcome break from the Freddie-shrieky intensity, if not for the metalesque guitars. But why did they find it necessary to try and include every idea and multiple styles in every song, to make every single, f-in cut into a rock opera, verily? One finds this level of excess to be exhausting, rather than exhilarating.

A case where I can respect the obvious talent on display but I have my limitations. Lots of wanking. I appreciate when they can cut through all of that with a hard-charger like Stone Cold Crazy. There's a playfulness I can't hate too much. Bring Back That Leroy Brown sounds like ragtime and wouldn't be out of place in a Broadway musical.

I’m in the minority of people who just aren’t impressed by Queen. It’s undeniable that Freddie is one of the best vocalists of all time, and the rest are decent players as well, and at one point I did consider myself a Queen fan. I don’t really know what happened, maybe I’ve just been inundated by their biggest hits for too long that I’m turned off by the rest of it. This album was exactly fine in my opinion. My favorite song of theirs has always been Killer Queen, so for me that was the peak of this album.

Another Queen album. Again, I like Queen but they were a singles band. The albums are very hit or miss. Lots of both hits and misses here. Solid but a notch below Night At The Opera

I always thought I hated Queen because I always want to kill myself when people sing Queen songs at karaoke, but I tried to go into this with an open heart and mind. I do think Killer Queen really is a freakin’ cool song. Now I am also into Flick of the Wrist. But it kind of feels impossible to sit and listen to this whole album in one go? I found myself checking how close to being over it was around Stone Cold Crazy and there were still five more songs. I don’t find it easy listening and there’s so much going on in every song and such drastic genre changes between them as well. They seem fun, but I just don’t know if I like it.

Well, I wanted to like this because I do love Freddy Mercury, and some of it was enjoyable. But I guess I just really don’t like ROCK GUITAR SOLOS and there was a lot of that here.

Not that bad

There weren't lots of hit singles here, but as an album it works. I didn't think I'd ever listened to it all the way through, and I enjoyed it.

It’s just not my thing, amazingly talented though

Never been my fave queen album

You’ve got to give Queen credit I suppose for being just so incredibly popular. This came mainly from the albums that followed this - Killer Queen is the only supermassive track here - but it’s all here, really. It’s also in perhaps a much more artistic form, given that in ‘74 Queen were in the scheme of things just getting started. It’d be nice if these first three albums (Queen, Queen II, and this) led into more expansion on certain interesting themes that are present here (see mainly the surprising heaviness of Brighton Rock, the “revisit” of Lap of the Gods, and the overall makeup of full-length tracks and comparatively little ditties), but we all know what came next. The brute operatics of Bohemian Rhapsody, made worse via its constant ultimate praise, and other more radio-friendly numbers. Fine. We’re looking at Sheer Heart Attack though. And if we can put the band’s following output out of our minds, we can appreciate this for what it is: a mid-seventies, run-of-the-mill, glam rock album. It has its highs (the opening two tracks) and its lows (the aforementioned little ditties), and as a whole it’s respectable, but not... any good. But yes, certainly more respectable than a lot of Queen’s music.

I'm not a Queen fan - one of those bands always on the radio - good hits but way overplayed. There is some good stuff here, but it's also extremely pompous. Musically faultless - May is great on the axe, and Freddy can sing. Not one I'll ever play again, but was fun to put it trough it's paces.

Killer Queen is super catchy. Rest of the album is solid but I think Queen just aren't my jam. 3/5.

Fun? I think?

killer queen is really good the rest is just alright

this is what they made that movie about huh

The best moments are when they sound like Queen instead of someone else. Obviously have yet to reach their apotheosis as rock legends at this point. Enjoyed it anyway! 3.5

I've never heard early Queen, it was alright

This is a step below 'A Night At The Opera' for me but is still really fun. Killer Queen is, of course, incredible but nothing much stood out from it besides that.

Classic

This is another one I had to listen to twice, in a (vain) attempt to absorb it all, the experience was like trying to eat a rhinoceros between two slices of bread. You can see all these threads coming together in this band, in their specific time and place: the full flowerings of prog and glam, with both drifting deep into the theatricality of Broadway and vaudeville, plus the nascent emergence of what would become the 1980s template for arena-friendly butt-rock, a genre that Queen would own thoroughly within a few years. Mostly I'm struck by just the wild imagination on display here, in harmonic choices specifically but also in song structure, instrumentation, choice of subject matter... they aren't really "for me", I find their everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach tiring and their overbearing high-drama exhausting, but how can you not respect them for their towering musical skills and absolute uniqueness as a band?

a breakout album for Queen. As is the case with many of their records, there are some amazing songs and some that you're not sure how they ever made the album.

Now I'm here has a stones guitar section. Brighton rock is a strong opener. Modulated voice in killer queen matches lyric and is not corny. I like the darkside of moon type screaming in lap of the gods. Stone cold crazy Live! Album kind of peters out

I have really enjoyed many Queen albums. This one felt a bit sporadic at times. I mean, some pretty ripping guitar riffs and Freddie's singing are impeccable. Overall, I wasn't super impressed with this album overall but enjoyed a handful of songs, including the classic, Killer Queen.

Probably their worst album but it still had killer queen on

The guitar and vocals alone sell this album! Probably more 3.5

Killer Queen is an obligatory listen for a Jojo fan but that's about it

Big swings. Too many misses. Feels dated.

Expected more to be honest. Some good songs, but a lot that I don’t plan on listening to again.

It's undeniable that Freddy Mercury was an amazing voice and talent, and that Queenare all skilled musicians. Queen's theatrical sensibilities begin to show here, but there's more variety than one would expect. There are the typical ballads, and rockin' rollers that Queen is known for, but "Stone Cold Crazy" is a side of Queen I didn't know existed. Fast, aggressive, and shreddy! Highlights: "Killer Queen", "Stone Cold Crazy", "Now I'm Here", "She Makes Me"

Solid but not quite classic. Few standout tracks.

Not bad? Idk felt weird

Probably the best Queen album on here. This one has quite a few good songs on here. Stone Cold Crazy and Brighton Rock are some of the best songs ever played by Queen. Unlike the other Queen album I had this week, I don't really mind the hit singles off this album either. That said, it's a Queen album and I still find it wholly inconsistent. There's a few duds and awful non-rock songs on here that ruin the flow and an otherwise nice album. I wish Queen had some more consistent albums.

Lots of filler and kind of a drag. Not the biggest Queen fan admittedly

Well, Queen is Queen. Remarkable and legendary. It's just that I have not ever really been into that style, so I can't appreciate anything but Killer Queen much.

killer queen

Sheer Heart Attack has flashes of greatness, with big riffs, glammy energy, and dramatic twists that show Queen finding their footing.

A high 3. I love Killer Queen. I don't think I'll ever love Queen. Some of the rest was good (Flick of the Wrist) but I just... Don't love Queen.

Not as amazing as the last queen album but still an easy listen.

Always loved Queen!

Messy at the start, better near the end

point8.

This is the best Queen album I’ve heard. What I liked about LP2 was how restrained the first half was, and I liked the fun and carefree nature of LP4. Sheer Heart Attack combines these two things into a neater package. It doesn’t go off the rails at any point, which Queen are prone to do. Killer Queen is my favourite of Queen’s big hits. It’s a very speedy, smoothly crafted single. I’ve never heard someone so effectively sing both the lower and higher octaves within seconds of each other as I have on Brighton Rock. Impressive vocal control.

It's Queen becoming a little more glam rock. It's okay - it has hits hit - but the rest kind of falls flat for me.

It was nice to hear Queen before they became so theatrical.

Probably my favourite Queen album, obviously it has good amounts of fluff and feels bloated, even when put against other Queen albums, but I find it somehow better than the others and I'm not ashamed to admit that I can't figure out why

Been a pretty big fan of every Queen album on this list so far. But I'll admit that enjoying Queen's singles and enjoying their albums are two very different sports. Their albums tend to be more linear in their progression, wildly more experimental, hard-rock leaning, and sort of messy. I mean, you still get a song like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' that is pretty much all those things, but a song like 'Killer Queen' off this album sticks out in just how directly catchy it is, unlike pretty much anything else here. With all that said, this was unfortunately one of my lesser favorite Queen albums...it's just far too all-over-the-place for my liking. There are still some highlights, like 'Bring Back That Leroy Brown' and the gorgeous little ballad that is 'Lily Of The Valley', which sounds a lot like early King Crimson. The riff on 'Stone Cold Crazy' is also one of the nuttiest things here. I also enjoyed the closing ballad 'In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited' which has some killer group vocals. And obviously, there's 'Killer Queen', super catchy and one of my all-time favorite Queen songs - those harmonies on the chorus rock. So there were individual highlights here, but as a whole, this was a difficult album to digest - it just goes in a million different directions. Maybe I'll enjoy it more on future listens.

Good, but hardly essential Queen.

*1974. *Killer Queen is the only song I knew. *I would rank this higher if there weren't better Queen albums. They're so innovative and fun, but this album doesn't have a lot of bangers. RATING - 6.5/10

Had hogere verwachtingen. Prima maar niet denderend

Not as good as A Night at the Opera. But it's hard to beat Queen if you're looking for some good old classic rock.

qualche canzone carina ma niente di complessivamente sorprendente

Love Killer Queen, the rest was fine

Ugh... listen I'm not a Queen fan but it's not because they aren't talented, it's because the people that practically orgasm on sight after hearing the band name likely haven't had to use any critical thinking skills in their real lives so they just parrot what they hear. This album was fine. It had some fun songs and the talent is palpable. It didn’t do much for me but I didn’t hate it

Some good freddie and brian, but I mostly only liked killer queen and stone cold crazy the most. I think I liked II a little bit more, but still really solid

Good one but not among the best of Queen.

Pas mal, mais rien de vraiment marquant.

I can’t really say that Queen is my sound but I’m not sure Queen isn’t my sound either

It’s a good album, definitely understandable why it’s the breakthrough. I’m not a personal fan of Queen though.

Inconsistent

Inconsistent. Feels like they hadn’t quite figured their sound out yet. A few good tracks but mostly generic

It was good, enjoyable listen, though somewhat outside of my perferred genres. I really love Killer Queen.

I enjoy Queen, but don't love them. They rock pretty hard while maintaining the silliness and camp that I associate them with. Highlights: "Brighton Rock", "Now I'm Here", "Stone Cold Crazy"

Квин и Квин. Лучшая песня - In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited.
