Yet another excellent album by Queen
the "Killer" Killer Queen
Good album.
Queen in a less mature version than what is coming, but still with all the ingredients that are going to make them successful and delightful.
"Sheer Heart Attack" was my favorite Queen album when I was younger. However, it doesn't hold up as well for me, now. I think "A Night at the Opera," which came up a week or so ago, holds up better with it having more complexities. I think I liked "Sheer Heart Attack" more before due to its more straight-forward rock with some glam. "Killer Queen" is still arguably my favorite Queen song, so I still really like this album and what it does, but it is no longer my favorite, I'm afraid.
Bueno.
Quite good, varied enough to stay interesting throughout, but don't think I'd listen to any of the songs in isolation
probably my first time listening to a Queen album in full. definitely not disappointed, it was an enjoyable listen, though it did not in fact blow my mind. would give it around 3.5 which I will probably round up due to the album's legendary status
oke neki bangeri, nije mi njihov najzdrazi mislim
It's queen and it has killer queen. Needs to be a 4
Flick of the wrist
One of the good things about listening to the albums on this list is getting a deeper dive into artists that I have always liked but never had listened to their albums in their entirety. I have always been a fan of Queen, but only ever knew their music from the radio. I was really taken by some of the lesser-known songs on this album, like the track "Tenement Funster", which was both written and sung by Roger Taylor. Queen was a great band and this album is a very good listen.
nice
I don't love everything on here but it does have Killer Queen and I do like listening to it so it's right over the edge of a 4.
I really like queen, but I find I'm only ok on their albums. Some amazing songs in here, but uh also a lot of stuff that's just ok. I can see why their best hits albums are super popular.
Dope
It's interesting. Some songs are definitely stereotypical 70s rock, but there's an interesting thread running through the album of non-traditional sounds. Mercury's voice is, of course, a high point of the album, as he's got incredible range and creativity. Although songs like Bring Back That Leroy Brown are a bit hokey (as an almost ode to the 20s sound), there are definite high points such as Stone Cold Crazy and Killer Queen. Whereas bands like Led Zeppelin unabashedly "borrowed" heavily from Blues, Many of the songs on this album feel like they are from the soundtrack of a Broadway play. Hard rock cum musical theatre, if you will. I listened to it a second time, and it really is quite good, for the most part. I'd say its a solid 3.5 stars.
Queen is Queen. Great as always. No real stand-outs in this album for me but great to put on in the summe.
Great flow & heavy riffs. Show tunes meets opera meets rock and roll. Another great example from this list of an album that plays very cohesive as a complete work. Thoroughly enjoyed this all the way through. I especially liked “Stone cold crazy” and the last track- “In the lap of the gods - revisited”. Seeing them live back in the day would have been one memorable experience. 4.5/5
This was a rockin good album. I was pleasantly surprised to hear as many hard rock guitar forward riffs and runs and no doubt Brian May’s sound is noticeable immediately. As is the clear talent of the other members. There were a few songs that felt like filler but overall this is just a solid rock album.
Well you can’t say Queen ever pulls any punches. This band knows how to load it up with unique, interesting moments at nearly all times. Just constantly swinging for the fences. I thought this was a great album, and relatively devoid of the songs from them that have become a bit overplayed. One major nit - how the hell can you have Freddie Mercury as a front man and think it’s ok to take the mic from him on any song? Basically a felony.
Brian May is one of my favorite guitarists. You instantly recognize his tone and it’s amazing how technical and clean he sounds while still being heavy. Makes sense since he built his guitar at age 16. And he has a doctorate in astrophysics! 🤯 First 8 songs are fantastic and Stone Cold Crazy is a face melter. Then it takes a weird turn for me. How are you gonna follow that rock with Dear Friends? And is bring back Leroy brown really something that needs to be in an album? Lap of the Gods was a nice finish and felt like a preview of where band would go in future albums.
I don’t know that I’ve ever listed to a full Queen album before this, but I’m glad I did. I think the only track I recognized was “Killer Queen;” the rest were also excellent with few exceptions. Favorite track: Flick of the Wrist
Great listen, there are some songs I’m definitely going to come back and listen to! Really enjoyed this one, 8.5/10
pretty cool to hear queen songs that feel soooo queen but that i don't know all that well.
Gran gran trabajo
A walk in the past. Always a pleasure to listen to queen.
I didn’t think I was going to like this album because this genre has never been my thing. But like most of the albums that I’ve heard on this journey, I was pleasantly surprised by how great this music sounds to me. I even saved some of these songs to play again. I knew Queen was a legendary group and of course I knew the hits but I never listened to any of their albums. I will now dive deeper into their discography, that’s what I love about this site!
Solid 4.5 - In "Sheer Heart Attack," Queen unfurls a kaleidoscopic barrage of musical prowess, blending genres with abandon and dexterity. From the thunderous stomp of "Stone Cold Crazy" to the whimsical art-rock odyssey of "Lily of the Valley," the album showcases the band's eclectic range and flamboyant charm. Freddie Mercury's operatic vocals soar over Brian May's intricate guitar work, creating a sonic tapestry that defies convention and invites repeated exploration. Tracks like "Killer Queen" and "Now I'm Here" pulsate with infectious energy, while the tender balladry of "Dear Friends" offers a poignant counterpoint. "Sheer Heart Attack" is a captivating journey through Queen's imaginative universe.
Forward artistic development with some banging tracks.
Good album that led to some great ones.
Jojo Referência Daora, mas assim, tem umas músicas que ficam meio nada a ver, ou eu não peguei a vibe mt bem.
“In the Lap of The Gods” is amazing. Queen is obviously amazing but Jesus Christ, there’s no “easy listening” to them. Not that they needed to do ANYTHING differently, but everything is a rock opera. Stemming from their collective musical genius is Queen’s ONE flaw, their music can come across as overtly sophisticated and thusly, it has almost zero lizard brain appeal. It’s like people who listen to musical theater all the time, it’s high quality music but it takes a certain mindset or wiring to make it your “favorite”. Regardless, it’s good stuff. This might sound idiotic, but I think Brian Wilson and Queen collectively are as brilliant as one another, “Smile” obviously demonstrates what Brian Wilson had going on in his head that The Beach Boys couldn’t ultimately deliver on for their legacy whereas Freddie Mercury let all that impulsive musical fever dream out onto the stage. The two groups are IMO very comparable not in what they became known for but what their talent potential was and what their leads WANTED to create. Excerpt on Smile Sessions: “Smile is firmly entrenched as a great album that never was; 35 years after the fact, historians and archeologists were still trying to put the pieces together. It was intended as the follow-up to the landmark Pet Sounds and was meant to further establish Brian Wilson as the creative better to Lennon and McCartney. But Wilson lost his way; he became obsessed with the process and couldn't finalize his magnum opus…”
I honestly didnt know Queen rocked like this. This is some top notch heavy metal.
As a non-Queen fan, I really enjoyed this record.
First album I've listened to on this journey that I found myself wishing a couple of the songs were LONGER. There's no doubt Queen is one of the most legendary bands of all time and this is for good reason. In my opinion, they absolutely mastered the formula that combines a Broadway feel with some absolutely fire hard rock with crushing guitars. And of course, someone who can match Freddie Mercury's vocals is hard to find. All this said, this isn't necessarily music I would keep in my personal rotation, but I can absolutely appreciate it for what it is.
Guitar solos scream Echoes trills fancy vocal Thrills, it's the new Queen
Not this is they best but I liked it
4 tracks in and this one rips. just finished it very good album
Never listened to this before!! Not my usual go-to kind of music but I had fun listening
3/4
Cool album! Sound, arrangements, dynamics. Everything's on point.
4⭐
sick riffs and all around just solid rock and roll. Its Queen, what's not to love
Electric stuff. So much versatility and bravado comes through on these songs. Mercury's powerful vocals and May's skillful solos are mesmerizing. Shame that this rock style has gone extinct along with a ton of other great 70's rock sounds.
OG Glam Rock. Brian May guitar...awesome!
Cool and rough album - safe 4 stars
Early 70s Hard Rock album by Queen, with a nice flow. The obvious standout is Killer Queen, one of the band's eternal classics, but all the other tracks are nothing to scoff at as well. This was clearly an early peak for Queen. Many more would follow. 4/5
I love Queen so much, but this isn’t my favorite album. The 3 song medley is amazing though, and I love the Jim Croce tribute song (Bring Back Leroy Brown). I definitely appreciate the album as a transition period for Queen, and I loved doing a deep dive on about how this album came to be. Overall, I’m happy to listen to Queen any day of my life, but I think they have better stuff out there.
Freddie Mercury’s voice is truly incredible. Some of the rhythms on songs I’ve never heard of are insane, super impressive. There’s also a huge variety of style in a single album, which I always appreciate, and shows the versatility of all the musicians. That being said, I did find myself a bit uninterested by a few of the songs, so would be hard-pressed to give it a 5.
Not necessarily any certified bangers on here but regardless, such a more enjoyable classic rock listen as opposed to someone like Cream for example (ya I’ll throw Clapton under the bus). It still amazes me with how weird there compositions are that they were able to break such into the mainstream (in the lap of god, bring back Leroy brown). This was a good prep for their subsequent album which I can only assume is on this list.
The only song I knew on here was "Killer Queen". That alone should put it above average. The other songs definitely have that Queen feeling but not the recognition. They have such a distinct sound that you can always pick them out. I'm sure if I listened to this album a bunch I would start to get into the rest of it, but for now "Killer Queen" still steals the show
The queen album without dumb sellouts or conceptual tomfoolery, aka the best one.
Very good album. Not a lot of hits on it
Queen never disappoints!
Very 70s
What can you say? It’s a Queen album, so it’s pretty damn good. It’s exactly what I expected. Outside of the hits that I already knew there were a lot of fun tracks that were each unique to themselves. One of those albums you could put on at any random spot and be perfectly fine.
such a fun album. loved the harmonies, the riffs, the vocals, the melodies. it's soft when it needs to be and can be hard and rough when it needs to be. just a solid rock album. "she makes me" feels like a proto-dream pop shoegaze song that i'd later on come to hear from bands like Spiritualized. it's fantastic. overall, i really enjoyed this album. it's a decent 8 for me.
Always love queen, maybe not my top album of theirs though. Brighton Rock slaps
Queen is always fun and impressive. Stand-out: Misfire
7/10
Fun to hear so many Queen songs that I didn’t know about.
What a range of styles and sounds. I love it.
Great band, wanted to like this more than I did though
It's Queen. I had an excellent time.
Don't think I've heard most of these songs before. Still can't go wrong with Queen
Maximalism and virtuosity, the songwriting of glam rock with the flair of funk, you could almost forget that this band has one of the greatest singers in popular music. They seem to be having endless fun on this record, and it’s infectious. May overdoes it slightly with the stereo delay, but otherwise the band’s sound is tuned to perfection.
Classic Queen rock!
Summary: All-in-all I very much liked this album. I was surprised by the influences I heard coming from someone that had only ever heard the Greatest Hits albums. The lead guitar was more of a stand-out than I expected as well. Another surprise was the proto-punk on track 6. Where did that come from? Did Queen start punk rock before it was cool and then abandon it? Track-by-track: 1 - Immediately getting a bit of a Beatles vibe I didn't expect (which quickly falls away for the classic Queen sound I am accustomed to). I also didn't expect the lead guitar to go insane. 2 - I was already very familiar with this track. It is a banger. 3 - Wow. This is a very different sound! I hear Beatles, Led Zeppelin... That Queen sound has faded a bit into the background. I still like it but I'm surprised. 4 - Oh I love that multi-layer vocal track that comes in with "Flick Of The Wrist". This almost has a Black Sabbath spookiness to it. I dig it. 5 - Little interlude. Nice in the context of the album. 6 - What is this? The intro to this song is like punk rock before it existed. And... now right back into the Queen sound. Decent track. 7 - Every track seems to have a dramatic introduction of some sort. Some are better than others. This one isn't really clicking with me. Overall this is a future skip track. (Yes Zvazda. I listened to the whole track for this listen through) 8 - What is this?? I feel like I've heard this one before but had no idea it was Queen. Interesting... The track is pretty good. I could see having this on some sort of high-energy rock mix. 9 - A lullaby? After that last track? Are they messing with us? 10 - This one feels like a bit of a throw back rock track. Pretty decent song. 11 - Kind of goofy. Its funny enough to listen to once but I'd probably skip it in the future. 12 - Such a different guitar sound here form the insane lead guitar earlier. This feels like more of a Beatles influence but it also feels like it could have come out as late as the 1990's so it sits in an interesting place. Very progressive while also being reminiscent. Not many bands capable of that. I like it quite a bit. 13 - Extended/Remastered track 7. Still not my favorite even with the "Revisited" version. Cannot penalize the album though.
Not my favorite Queen album but who doesn’t love Killer Queen
Always love some Queen.
Fun - only knew killler queen. Lots of old school rock and roll with parsi twist
The GOOD bits of Queen, rock, and tunes, and anthems, with reduced cheese.
It has the Queen's seal of approval. Few bands could put out this much quality in such a short amount of time. What more can be said? (8.97/10).
Gear: Meze 109 Pro Artwork: ♨️🥵👱♂️ Production (2011 Remaster): 🪄✨😮 Mugge: 👑🎸🫶 Wertung: 🪭🪭🪭🪭(🪭)/5
I wonder why never listen to much Queen in the past. Most of what I've heard not just on this CD/album but in reviewing other things as well is that they're just kind of fun. A little weird, but fun.
Fun listen and a pretty rocking album. Overall think I have other albums of theirs I like slightly more.
Rah, shows the potential. Just kids playing around, finding their sound and someways more goofy but also more straightforward than later queen albums. Killer queen still smashes, Freddy’s vocals are starting to peek out, but he hasn’t really found his full voice, and the mix keeps things more balanced/guitar rock focused than later queen, which is more Freddy focused, and then listen to the next album which has somebody to love which still gives me tingles, and then General is getting a bit more opera-ish already. You see the potential here.
Thoughts before listening: This is my second early Queen album in a week. The first one (Queen II) was a bit surprising as it was before they had fully developed their sound and were still coming off as a Who or Zeppelin sounding band. This is the next album in line so I suspect it will have a bit more of the over the top theatrical sound they'd become famous for. "Killer Queen" is on this album and that definitely is closer to the Queen we all know. Review: This is definitely closer to the real Queen sound, with a couple of their most enduring songs in "Killer Queen" and "Stone Cold Crazy". Both of those songs are a fun listen, but overall this is definitely an improvement on the previous album. Where I felt that Brian May was the star of that record, Freddie Mercury is starting to exert himself as the true attraction on this one. This is a 4-star album.
Just like most queen albums, the production is extravagant, loud and out of this world. The guitar and drums on every song slap and while this album might lack the MASSIVE hits of A Night At The Opera, Sheer Heart Attack at least to me is a more consistent effort. Speaking of which, the name of this album perfectly fits the first 10 tracks that come at you 100 miles an hour, each track really gives the feeling of having a heart attack, however where this album falls flat is the last two tracks (not the revision song which is great) . In my opinion, they don’t fit the vibe of the album and they feature some silly skit like adlibs or boring drowned vocals
Solid album. Some Prog-y weirdness that I wasn’t expecting from Queen. And how about those metal chugs on Brighton Rock, that was unexpected! I didn’t love all the songs but I’m giving this album a 4. Queen really went for it on this one, they were trying some different stuff. Not everything worked, but respect for going for it. Bring Back That Leroy Brown should not be slept on.
Very interesting !
Some lovely moments
Would be only 3 if not for "Killer Queen"
Sweet
fun romp through land of nostalgia. also, just a great listen
I mean it's Queen, their sound is always fun, if often nonsense. "Killer Queen" is particularly fun nonsense, lyrically, almost patter-song-y. "Flick of the Wrist" is another good one. And at least the album is pretty varied, so even if it blends into the background, you notice the start of each new song.
Pretty incredible album front to back. Obviously Freddie's voice shines but so does Brian May's guitar playing. Some impressive and intricate riffs sewn into this one. Listening to this in the modern day really makes you realize how much their sound influenced bands after them. Favorite Song: Stone Cold Crazy Favorite Moment: last 20 seconds or so of "Bring Back Leroy That Brown"
I'd never heard some of these. Sheer Heart Attack was a nice surprise.
Queen might be the only band that can do the whole theatrical and cheesy thing and it becomes a positive for me rather than a negative. Freddie is a big part of that, it says a lot that the only song without him on vocals felt so out of place to me and clearly the weakest. If they went in a full prog-rock direction I feel like they could've made some killer stuff, just from what the more proggy songs on here sound like.
Entertaining Standout songs: Brighton rock, flick of the wrist, now I'm here
asks the question: What if Led Zeppelin was even more gay? Answers the question: It would be fucking fabulous!
Here's what I wrote on the plane: Checking in from somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. This is my first "third" album from an artist, and while I'm a big Queen fan overall this is coming in 3rd place of what I've gotten so far (A Night At The Opera is by far #1, and Queen II is a bit ahead of this). It's not bad, but is just a bit generic throughout. It's starting to sound a bit more like later Queen (Queen II rocked a bit harder, this is more glam-y), but there's not a ton that stands out to me. It's a perfectly good '70s glam rock album with a lot of songs that sound distinctly "Queen", but lacking much that brings it to the next level. I added a decent number of songs to my playlist, but I have no idea which one to pick as a favorite. Additional notes on a partial re-listen: I generally am still on board with what I wrote, but I think I was a bit overly harsh. There's definitely some good stuff on here. "Killer Queen" is pretty iconic Queen sound, "Brighton Rock" is better than I originally gave it credit for, same with "Stone Cold Crazy". "Dear Friends" is 67 seconds long, but a beautiful little break near the end, leading into also-short "Misfire" which is a lot of fun. This is solid, I was too negative. It's still not as good as ANATO but that's a really high bar, and it's probably in the ballpark with Queen II for me, and I liked Queen II a lot. It's solid work from a band that generally hits for me. Favorite song: Killer Queen Other: Brighton Rock, Flick Of The Wrist, Lily Of The Valley, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, Dear Friends, Misfire, She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettos) 1/6/24 (or maybe 1/7 depending on when we crossed the date line, don't think we have yet though)
très bien !
Really enjoyed it! It was fun with really good guitar, as expected from Queen
Surprising heavy sound from early Queen
Super
I love queen! This is a great album. Such a camp album cover, sweaty and serious all at the same time! They look like they are playing twister! Not the best, not the worst. Its queen, its a solid 4!
Amazing album art - their eyes are all whispering something different - ha ha. This isn't my favourite Queen album, but it does have my favourite Queen track on it! I probably wasn't in the best frame of mind to listen to this properly today - so I'll give it a repeat listen another time! Fave Track: Killer Queen
Lest we forget, Queen were a rock band. Despite being seen mainly as a singles band. Sheer Heart Attack exemplifies both truisms above. Because when it rocks it rocks. And the singles are great. But as an album it’s, like all Queen albums, patchy. Brighton Rock kicks it off brilliantly whilst Metallica did Stone Cold Crazy at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert. Queen’s version is louder. Killer Queen has just the right balance between camp and catchy to make it likewise brilliant. Now I’m Here further exemplifies why the original Queens Greatest Hits is one of the biggest sellers of all time. These were the days - before commercial pragmatism took over the next decade - the vocals were shared. And so we get the inevitable dip with Roger Taylor’s clunky Tenement Funster. The Prog side of Queen - flick of the wrist - is where they excel for me on these early records. The Lap of the Gods doesn’t quite hit the heady heights of its subject matter. Bring Back That Leroy should never have appeared on record. But just goes to show that Queen we’re both a rock band and singles band with patchy albums. Like I’ve said.
Easy to see the direction they were headed that would make them immense. Not quite there yet, but very good none-the-less
It's interesting, I was born in the 70's, so the first Queen I heard was the Queen of the 80's. A sound I didn't enjoy at all, never did anything for me. Until 1991, when I heard Innuendo. That album blew me away and I told my parents who then proceeded to take out and play of their record collection the LP's of Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack, A Night at the Opera and a Day At The Races. And all of a sudden I understood why Queen were so highly regarded. This is another great album by Queen from their somewhat earlier years. But the highlights are definitely found in the first 8 minutes of the album. The rest of the album is of a high level, but won't reach those few minutes again.
Such a fun and theatrical band. Freddy has an incredibly unique voice and flair that most rock stars would kill for. Unfortunately though it's not too much my thing and a lot of it ends up kind of forgettable but fun. Brian May is one of the best guitarists alive though.
Enjoyed the fluidity of the album and length of it, Queen sound came through well and good variety in tracks.
Fun! 4.
8/10
So awesome
Interesting stuff - kinda glam, kinda hard rock and glimpses of the Queen we’d learn all about later. Groundbreaking stuff for 1974.
🤘🏽 Killer Queen 🤘🏽
I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a full queen album and unsurprisingly it was good. They’re a great band not much to say other than that. -B
Had never listened to another queen album besides a night at the opera and a day at the races. This is much more straightforward than those, but lots of punchy Brian May guitar was my favorite part
December 1, 2023 Classic. Misfire and She Makes Me deserve more airplay. Leroy Brown, harmonizing a train whistle is a bridge too far.
What a fun listen! And so much more than just the two hits I already knew from their greatest hits compilations. Definitely one to revisit.
Good album with a few bangers. Love the dyrker tone
Very interesting to hear deeper Queen cuts, their non-singles. There's a kind of System of a Down feel to some of it.
3.6
Lovely stuff 4
Brani Preferiti: - "Killer Queen" - "Tenement Funster" - "Now I'm Here" - "In The Lap Of the Gods...
Sounds like stereotypical 70s rock, but I guess that's because Queen are one of the key bands that created this sound. Either way, I had already picked my favorites, so no five stars. Plus, there is only one certified Queen hit on this album.
Gotta love Queen!
Refreshing definitely very enjoyable
There is a signature sound of guitar which made Queen more Queen . I loved the songs which didn’t sound that much typical. They could sense how intelligent and brave they were musically
Liked it
really good. I am not a huge queen fan,
It’s queen! A lot of songs I’ve never head before with some old favorites. I stupidly didn’t realize that there was more queen songs out there. Of course there is.
Neben so großen Alben wie Night at the Opera, News of the World, Jazz oder The Game geht Sheer Heart Attack schnell unter - zu Unrecht! - Gotta love some early Queen Rating: 4/5
- This is what an evolution of a band sounds like. Its the step they took between the prog-rock beggining of the QUEEN-records and the legendary "Night at the Opera" wich became THE sound of Queen - you can hear that "Night at the Opera" was stilisticly prepared in this album - Awesome-Tracks with Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy - Sheer Heart Attack misses a widespread quality between all songs and doesnt really have a unique sound compared to the previous records and Night at the opera. - It's still Queen 4/5
Brighton Rock - 5.7/10 Killer Queen - 8/10 Tenement Funster - 7.6/10 Flick Of The Wrist - 7.8/10 Lily Of The Valley - 8.1/10 Now I'm Here - 8.2/10 In The Lap Of The Gods - 8/10 Stone Cold Crazy - 6.5/10 Dear Friends - 8.4/10 Misfire - 8.5/10 Bring Back That Leroy Brown - 5/10 She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettos) - 8.4/10 In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited - 8.3/10 Sheer Heart Attack - Queen - 8.2/10
Such a unique sound - I didn’t know Queen had a signature sound and style to such an extent. Great album, not my favorite but very very very good
Killer Queen yay, plus a couple others.
Only in hindsight can this album look diminished. Here Queen was a band that could be another T Rex, another Sabbath, another Supertramp. But it fooled us all and became Queen. You could sense it in their earlier stuff, but here it was in your face, daring you to listen to what might come next.
Freddie Mercury and the rest of Queen just sound so good together. Their voices have a great range and sound so unique it’s very pleasing. Will listen again and look out for more albums. 8/10
Fun album, I was a fan of all the guitar chugging and excellent vocals. Added one, skipped zero, will be back
Lots of fun energy with a crazy unique style of rock. Extremely well rounded and of course, "Killer Queen". 8/10.
Great record, rocks much harder than I thought it would! The songwriting is just perfect.
Queen is simply amazing.
Queen was always able to do a little of everything even punk rock 💜
Good ‘Ol Queen
I can see how this was Queen's big break album. I enjoyed how it was slightly on the shorter side, fun, and a start of a legendary journey.
Some of the songs were not what I expected! SAVOUR: Misfire, Brighton Rock
Proof that this band could kick some ass when it wanted to. The result is one of the best glam rock albums ever, one that stands up with the Best Of Bowie. But, always the case when it comes to Queen, everything rolls right along until Roger Taylor and Brian May think they need to sing lead on a couple of tracks. Again fellas, your lead singer is Freddie Fucking Mercury. Deciding to let anyone else sing lead is like members of the Nelson Riddle Orchestra insisting on taking lead vocals on a few songs instead of Frank Sinatra. Brian May is one of our more accomplished lead guitar players, but I'll never understand why he couldn't just focus on that and let Freddie cook. Even still, Queen's best album overall.
Really good album, enjoyed Tenement Funster, Lily of the Valley, Stone Cold Crazy the most other than the obvious two.
It has some absolute bangers of Queen. But my problem with Queen has always been that the rest of their stuff besides their hits never really calls to me... 8/10
Great album!
Queen is so good. They have to be one of the most consistent enjoyable bands. This album is more proof that they can create a seamless album of songs with varying styles and it mesh very well. Killer queen is a hit hut there were several other songs on here that delivered. This is a great album. 8.1/10
Easy listening 4/5
Their status as a singles band is uncontested but their albums are a bit hit or miss. This is one of the best ones.
Killer Queen
Raucous, varied, passionate,
The things that must come together to produce this amaze me
Very good album
I love Queen because all 4 songwriters have such different sensibilities that you’ll be jumping around through wildly different styles every album. This one is probably the most consistently hard rock of their catalogue but it’s damn good hard rock.
Pfwaaa Excellent, beaucoup d'expérimentations Préfère le début à la fin Side A est folle, avec des transitions entre morceaux
Very good album. It didn't feature a lot of Queen's most famous songs or my personal favourites, but overall the album is solid throughout. Would deserve a 4.5.
Pretty good! Upbeat. Dig the vibe
Killer Queen shows how they can merge elite vocal ability, rock, and pop.
Divertido de escuchar, muy teatral, tiene infinitos matices y detalles en la construcción del sonido en conjunto con las voces, me gustó mucho
I liked lots of these songs more than Queen’s big hits. It had some really interesting chord progressions and song structures
Having only really heard Queen's greatest hits, which tend to be more theatrical, I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of straight rock on this album. Some pretty great guitar on tracks like Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, and Brighton Rock (although the 3 minute solo does seem a bit excessive by today's standards). 7/10
More fun than I anticipated!
+ for killer queen
Not a fan
Brighton rock. The vocals are a little lost in the mix. A little disappointing tbh, especially since it's the opening track. The guitar is the highlight of this track, and really good. Killer queen slaps so hard. There's a reason it's so famous. This is what queen can do! Not much to say about tenement funster. It's decent, no doubt, but not special. Holy shit these transitions. Lilly of the Valley is a powerful song. Like the stereo tricks on Now I'm Here. The power from In the Lap of the Gods. Queen is so good at music. Stone Cold Crazy goes hard. It's giving Elvis but better. Idk why. Great transition once again. Dear friends is a tonal shift. Still good, just unexpected. Misfire is bright, with a nice guitar. Bring Back Leroy Brown is a silly little diddy. I'm a fan. They definitely put their brighter, sillier tracks in the latter half of the album. She Makes me slows us way down. Little love ballad over here. In the Lap of the Gods Revisited is a slower rock ballad, but quicker than the previous track. Overall, a great album. A couple weak tracks, but a really enjoyable experience. I'm feeling a solid 8.
Good album
Queen is one of my all time favourite bands and this album yet again does not fail. Even though this isn't one of their best albums it's still great. Queen are so unique in their sound but they honestly are incapable of making bad songs. With Freddie's stand out voice and Brian May's iconic guitar riffs, all the songs on this track are amazing. Stand out tracks: Killer Queen, Lily of the Valley
Super stereo. Great guitar tones and obviously stellar vocals. Harmony revolutionizing. Some songs were longer than they had to be without compensating for interest. Looking at the first track there. But rippin. Killer queen one of the best ever
its good..... its similar to a lot of other bands at the time.... before queen really pushed thier own sound further
Really good album. Short enough that I listened twice.
Beautiful mix multiple genre album that pick all the songs are able to be different in many way but keep a great form. Guitarist fantastic, Freddy singing beautiful as always just an amazing album all around. 8/10
Parfait pour survoler l'Alsace
jeeeees reĝino
Straight up hard rock but with luscious Queen harmonies. Plus Killer Queen, which is its own thing, and a masterpiece at that.
Good album, 4 out of 5
even better after a second listen... this will go on my vinyl wishlist
Yes
Capital B Baroque rock. I don't know that it's clicked like this for me before with Queen. Haven't listened to an album in full since my teens! It also hit me more this time how solid the rest are as singers as well as instrumentalists. The hits are so Freddie heavy that I forget theyre basically if Kansas were all theater kids. Yeah Killer Queen is a mega hit but there's more meat on the bone thankfully, starting with that ripping opener. Flick of the Wrist foreshadowed some motifs they'd use more successfully later in Don't Stop Me Now and other hits, and Now I'm Here rocks on its own. It's hard not to admire a band that so fully owns their oddness. Stone Cold Crazy sounds like iron maiden before iron maiden, and they have the audacity to follow it with a short operatic ballad but somehow the sequencing makes total sense. The rest are no less eclectic. A couple tracks maybe I didn't need, but overall this felt like a tall glass of water after the desert of this week
It's wild to me how many albums Queen released before they truly hit it big given how famous of a band they are now. This was very good and contains all of the elements of what they'd later be very popular for doing. The extended guitar parts on "Brighton Rock" were awesome. Queen is ultimately a bit too theatrical for me, but not in a funny way like Meat Loaf.
I'm a classic rock guy, sure, but not a huge fan of melodic choir style of queen. Listened the whole way through though, without ever wanting to turn it off.
good album. will listen again.
A few tracks with fast guitar, some excellent vocals as you'd expect but not a patch on later albums.
It's a classic! It's difficult to listen to Freddie Mercury and not be amazed. Brian May is a monster, and gets one of the coolest guitar tones of that era(related reading: The Red Special - as the legend goes, May and his dad built that guitar out of a fireplace mantle.) Roger Taylor's playing is just delightful. I've listened to Bring Back That Leroy Brown like twenty times over the weekend, IDK how you keep that tricky of a song SO tight. It's also a great showcase of their backing vocal prowess, which is one of my favorite parts of what this band does.
8/10, really quite good. Some new ones I hadn't heard before. Classic Queen sound
like it, 4 zvjezde
Can tell that they're heading towards A Night At The Opera with some of the multi layering, songs about cars & other ridiculousness. Stone Cold Crazy 🤘
Great
Love Queen. This is a transitional album for them -- they are moving away from their prog roots and becoming a bit more of a rock band. "Killer Queen" was huge, and "Tenement Funster" still rocks. There are several Queen albums I like more than this one, though.
A bit of a roller coaster - really quite liked it
I liked the guitar work.
Yeah, another album I am already very familiar with. Some of this stuff is the best Queen have ever done. But they do have better albums so I can't give a 5. Special shout out to Brian May here though.
good album ngl nice guitar parts forgot I liked queen music
Enjoyed absolutely. A magnificent listen, bumpy and bouncy. Solid guitar work. 4
Not a night at the opera... but it was great!
Yes.
Enjoyable, fast paced, no night at the opera but top three queen album
i don’t love queen but they are always a good time
Stone cold crazy!
i've gotten more into queen over the past few years via Rock Band, so I enjoyed this album overall. after two listens, the songs I already knew remained my favorites, but I'll revisit this one from time to time. favorites: killer queen, stone cold crazy, brighton rock
Queen in my eyes is a highly overrated band. They owe Wayne's World a debt of gratitude. I've always seen them as a band with hits that weren't even that good, just provocative (fat bottom girls, that bicycle song, under pressure.) But these album cuts are deep. Lots of ground covered.
Not their best but still musically genius, possibly only because their other heights are so high this doesn't get a 5
A Queen album showing an expansion of their 70s hard rock sound.
A band really hitting their straps. Its all over the place really, but it works. Ballads with hard rock and developing that Queen sound.
I liked mid-70s Queen and this is pretty good. Everything is in place - Brian May's distinctive guitar, the harmonies and the pomp, and still a predominantly hard rock sound. Now I'm Here is outstanding but I also like the underrated Tenement Funster. Side two tails off a bit.
I only knew 3 songs on this, but there were quite a few other winners. Apart from the obvious Killer Queen and Now I'm Here, I liked Brighton Rock and Misfire, which was really short, but good. A solid 4, maybe even a bit more.
begrudgingly, i like this album. it was fun. but i still dislike queen and i HATE bohemian rhapsody ok.
First part of the first track had me worried, but this turned out to be awesome! I liked how well some of the tracks blended into the next. Dude's vocals are insane when he gets going. Maybe only one or two tracks that didn't land. Rest was great
I'm not sure this is their best album but it certainly shows where they were going.
Nisam nikad slušao Queen po albumima pa me album ugodno iznenadio, baš je dobro ukomponiran. 3,85
Listened Before? N Great album, and my first beginning-to-end Queen album! I loved it. The guitars are incredible, and of course Freddie Mercury was an amazing singer. Lots of unique songwriting here as well. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy
First listen Not one of my favourite Queen albums but I feel like this one could grow on me eventually Favourite tracks: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Lily of The Valley, Now I’m Here, Stone Cold Crazy
Some classics in this
Excellent.
YAYY we got a queen album amazing very good yes.
harder rock compared to most queen. Would listen again.
This is a good album, but it’s not Queen’s best. Best tracks: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist, Lily of the Valley, Dear Friends Worst: In The Lap Of The Gods, In The Lap Of The Gods… Revisited, Bring Back That Leroy Brown
Queen rocks!
Tidlig Queen, men fortsatt veldig Queen. Kun en låt (Killer Queen) som var kjent for meg fra tidligere, uten at det var noe problem. Jeg foretrekker (og sparer derfor 5eren) senere album.
The diversity is crazy. Loud into silent, hard rock into soft rock. Brian May is great here. Bonus half point for great album cover. 4.5/5.
Queen seldomly disappoints
The number of times I hear of how overrated Queen is, or by the number of diehard fans of who haven't heard anything beyond their hits. I was completely expecting this to be carried by "Killer Queen." This is an insanely fun album. It's so fast and eclectic, with a wild performance among both Mercury's vocals and the proggy rock instrumentals, million different styles in every song. It's not supposed to be coherent, although you have some awesome transitions (Tenement Funster to Flick of the Wrist to Lily of the Valley). But it's not a mess either. They all evoke the same mood, with a lot of classical and operatic influences interspersed. I wonder just how many Queen albums are actually this good.
Decent 7
Crazy good track to start with. Love the riffing from Brian May in this one. It's like he grabs your attention and finesses you around the room with this half lead / half rhythmic back and forth. It's very cool. His guitar tone here is really impressive too, as always. There's a little bit of this unrelenting energy in this album that hurts it a little for me. They have moments where it's less energetic and slowed down and stuff like that but I can't help but feel like they are just biding their time and going through the motions until the more high energy parts come. It's hard for me to articulate but I don't love that aspect. What a sweaty album cover. Love when a good album has a good amount of sweat on the cover. 4/5 for me. Very good. Very enjoyable.
I'm not huge on Queen, but this a pretty good. Probably the best I've heard from them so far.
I am living for these early Queen albums. I thought Queen II was good, but holy shit was this even better. I may have liked the theming of Queen II more, but all the songs here are at least good, if not all excellent, and I'm still a big fan of the non-hit maker Queen that we see here that isn't present on the later records. I'm starting to see why Dimery picked the Queen albums he did, for sure. Loved this one, just one left, the big one!
Wow!! Queen er åpenbart mye mye mer enn bare hits. Gjennomført progrock
Brighton rock 9/10 (solid opener) killer queen 10/10 (classic, peak queen) tenement funster 7/10 (sounds a bit dated, still fun) flick of the wrist 8/10 (Freddie sounds like he's doing a Halloween song, not a huge fan, good refrain and sick riffs save it) lily of the valley 8.5/10 (incredible melody, freddies voice rocks, shame it's so short) now I'm here 8/10 (doesn't get any more stereotypically queen than this) in the lap of the gods 6/10 (boring, simple melody, sounds like an interlude) stone cold crazy 9/10 (goes hard, ngl) dear friends 8/10 (somber freddie interlude, nice) misfire 7/10 (90s family sitcom melody, i can see the b rolls of a gated 97% white neighborhood while this plays, nice lyrics tho i like the message) bring back that leroy brown 5/10 (ooh boy, a song that sounds like something made in 1926, how innovative and provocative, amazing[not]) she makes me (stormtrooper in stilettos) 6/10 (inoffensive love song, "oh boo hoo i love her so much she's my love, im worried about the future but you make my brain shut up" who cares) in the lap of the gods... revisited 8.5/10 (this should've been in the lap of the gods, this is good, more of this please, shame it's the last song of the album) avg of 7.7/10 decent record, not the best queen record, at times brilliant and groundbreaking, and at times painfully boring. overall i did enjoy it, as a project in it's entirety I'd say 7.7 is a bit low, if i was to rate each song on their own 7.7 would be right. overall do recommend, try it if you like the shit your mom plays and soys over while on roadtrips
Underestimated Queen as an album band this album has got some great songs. And I am doing Killer Queen for GCSE 💀
Standouts: Lily of the Valley; In the Lap of the Gods…Revisited; Killer Queen. 4/5.
Continues to prove how underrated they are as an influence on metal. Great musicianship, vocals and songwriting. Moves a bit fast at times, but stands the test of time.
Enjoyable album that just falls a bit short because it is between styles. Bit opera rock and a bit progressive makes for a good album, however not as good as the the album before or after that are commited to one style only
Most of this album cooks. Brighton Rock and Stone Cold Crazy are pure bangers that totally rock. The medley of Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist and Lily of the Valley is outstanding! The final quarter is a bit of a let down but overall, this is a worthy listen. Not quite five stars but still really good.
Ken ik al brooo
Having only heard their biggest hits (although we are talking enough to fill two or three albums), it was nice listening to the original full length albums. Awesome experience.
Not the Queenest Queen album, but it's Queen enough.
Key songs: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy
Couple classic hits and the start of that great Queen sound!
A lot of classics are from the album. Not a single dull moment
Good stuff
This is a fun album. Freddy Mercury is amazing of course. They all were good singers but I don’t know why you’d want to Brian May sing lead on any song with Freddy Mercury in the band. Brian May is a great guitarist I love his tones. Killer Queen is such a cool tune. Stone Cold Crazy is a cool riff it’s almost like proto thrash metal. I’d give maybe a 4.5 because I’d probably skip over a tune or two if I was listening again
This is hard to rate. Objectively this is a ten. The songwriting is incredible and I love how unique their sound is. The whole thing sounds like a musical. He’s probably the best rock vocalist of all time and all the vocal arranging is crazy. Brian may has such great tones (and really going for the Hendrix thing in Brighton rock) but the rhythm section is not really interesting or special in any way and when that’s the case I just have a hard time getting super excited. Idk how to rate it bc they are amazing but I probably won’t ever listen to this again.
I loved this album. They have so many albums and I have only heard a handful of them.
It's a proper rock album. Love it.
classic
An amazing album. I had never listed to all of it straight through.
I like Queen and I like this. I think the first track is a little weak and lacks focus. But then the rest of the album is amazing.
I’m not a huge fan of the band, but they do have some really good songs, a few that are in this album. They do some really cool stuff with right and left channels that I’ve never heard done quite like that. Enjoyable listen.
Good album. Queen's varied comp is something I'm still learning to appreciate. Still haven't listened enough to fully hear the lyrics, but have enjoyed the music overall.
Rock? Punk? Prog? Opera? Dixie Jazz? This album is all over the place, from the poppy well-known Killer Queen, through the heavy-metal inspiring Stone Cold Crazy, Queen weaves a tapestry of eclectic music into a tight 39 minutes. 4/5.
Really liked "Misfire." I'm a fan of Queen, but have hardly listened to any full albums to be honest. There was one or two WTF tracks on here like Bring Back Leroy Brown, but they still somehow fit.
It's Queen, so you know it's good. It just isn't 5 star good to my ears.
The Killer Queen 45 was the first Queen music I bought and the album, Sheer Heart Attack remains one of my favourite albums (tied with Bohemian Rhapsody) of Queen. After their first two meandering albums, Queen pulled it together and released a great rock record, that straddled the genres of prog and metal and with songs like, Killer Queen, Flick Of The Wrist and Brighton Rock, proved the band can write radio-friendly music. I bailed on the band after, Day At The Races as they became much too mainstream and pop music hit machines. It's too bad.
Queen is always great, consistent album
Killer Queen and Flick of the Wrist highlight this album that gives us a hint of the Brian May guitar riffed, Freddie Mercury piano and vocals led, complex background harmonized treats we were all in for on future albums.
There is some spectacular songs on this. Bring Back That Leroy Brown. Wow. Stone Cold, Killer Queen. Classics. Great stuff, also some stuff that doesn't measure up to what I expect from Queen. Great album, not my favorite.
Great album
Classic Queen Good mix of Ballad Rock, Hard Rock and Classic Rock One of Queens best albums Great flow
Is a god one
Solid album I thought
This album had more range than I thought it would. Operatic ballads, funky guitar riffs, and hunky dory tracks make it very enjoyable to listen to. Instruments and vocals sound great and the lyrics are entertaining as well. There's nothing here to really complain about except that I personally just felt it was a tad lackluster and I can't even really tell where. I just have this feeling that they weren't quite enthusiastic about the songs they were creating, even if they did play their hearts out on them. 4/5
With a stronger ending this would be a five but the energy starts to fade in the last few songs
killer queen fire wtf carried by killer queen a bit but still chill
The best Queen album I'd never heard
Queen start to become more glam rock than prog, but there are still elements here. This is what I think Queen sound like when people discuss them - it's the epitome of their sound. I've got to say, I'm not the biggest Queen fan as I feel they were more a singles band, but this album is pretty, pretty, pretty good. Fair play lads. Best Tracks: Killer Queen; Now I'm Here; Stone Cold Crazy
Probably my favourite Queen album, so good
A banger!
despite sheer heart attack being an early queen album, it contains that usual queen charm. it also contains the great glam and hard rock sound they were known for! sheer heart attack is their third album but is the first album to contain one of their biggest hits, which happened to be "killer queen". as such, most of this album was new for me. it was incredibly enjoyable, and i had no problem listening to this album multiple times. if i had to pick one instrument from this album, it is undoubtedly the guitar. brian may absolutely KILLS the guitar during multiple tracks. opening the album with "brighton rock" and that guitar, wow! but also, "bring back that leroy brown" is somehow catchy yet weird. the instruments used in that song were an unusual combination but it turned out good. i guess that's queen in a nutshell! freddie mercury is synonymous with queen since he was their frontman, but it's lovely to hear other band mates' voices, too.
It's Queen: ballady baroque rock, solid all the way through, not nearly as weird as some of the more progressive outings but still with plenty of well-off-mainstream flourishes.
I've never listened to Queen, but what an album to start with. Such a good glam rock album. 4/5. Favorite Track: Flick Of The Wrist
This used to be my least favourite of Queen's early albums, but it grows on me every time I listen. Some incredible Brian guitar work on Brighton Rock, beautiful Freddie melodies on Lily of the Valley, and some left-field Roger songwriting on Tenement Funster. John holds it all together with that bass. This album lifted my week!
Klassikkokamaa
Remember how the surviving members of Queen made a movie about the band and made themselves look loyal to their families and threw Freddie under the bus.
Well, it's definitely not the best Queen album but this is when Queen became Queen. Herein lie the roots of one of the greatest bands of all time. I mean it. It's all here. Massive, layered vocals, rock-opera-esque lyrics and composition, Brian May melting faces with his insane guitar work, and (of course) Freddy Mercury absolutely murdering the lead vocals. This really is where it all started to coalesce. But they're not all "Killer Queen" are they? No, they're not. It doesn't all hit. But even the misses are near misses. A damn fine album and a great hint of things to come.
3.5
Great album. More of a 4.5.
Clássico!
Genre: Favorite songs: Killer Queen, Lily of the Valley and Now I'm Here
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Brighton rock, Killer queen, Flick of the wrist, Bring back that Leroy Brown
I've only really listened to Queen's hits, never a full studio album. So I was surprised to see that I only recognised one song off this, Killer Queen. I enjoyed it for the most part, some of the songs were a tad boring, but the guitar and vocals (when Freddie was singing) were fantastic. I didn't know their early stuff was so Prog. This is somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me, but I'll round it up.
Queen has 10 songs that everyone knows. And... and tons of other songs that nobody knows. A modern music listener could be forgiven for thinking of Queen as those 10 songs, and wishing, "gosh, wish I had more songs with Queen's sound!" Well... guess what? They're here. This was all... fine. But I've got enough Queen sound already? I guess.
Good fun! Killer Queen is one of their best, but even the weaker cuts were enjoyable enough. It’s a winning blend of catchy, campy English pop, theatrical anthems and tracks that genuinely rock quite hard. The appeal of Queen in a nutshell, really.
A lot of songs that should have been much bigger classics. Pleasantly surprised.
Great Album with some very notable tracks.
Killer Queen awesome as always. Lily of the Valley was great Flick of the wrist real cool. In the Lap of God too Gotta listen to the rest
First time listening to a Queen album. Previously I was only familiar with a handful of hits (think Bohemian Rhapsody). This album was fun, energetic, and diverse.
The meticulous composing of the choirs and pure power of Freddy´s voice make it an ecstatic ..... ok, cutting the crap, one of the best queen albums
Sits in between Queen II and Night at the Opera, both chronologically and qualitatively. Killer Queen is an amazing song, and there are a few other gems, but overall it still feels a bit uneven.
For some reason I did not expect Sheer Heart Attack to be my favourite Queen album, but here we are! 'Brighton Rock' into 'Killer Queen' is an exceptional opener and a perfect taste of what to come. On this record, Queen manages to blend their baroque-inspired compositions with a more heavy instrumentation to great results. The listener is still bombarded with sensory impressions, but not to as high degree as on Queen II. 'Tenement Funster' displays a great set of pipes on Roger Taylor, and the transition into 'Flick of the Wrist' is flawless. 'Stone Cold Crazy' is two minutes of pure fun, and 'In the Lap of the Gods' is Freddie at his best. The song lengths are to the shorter side which does cause some genre-related motion sickness at times, especially towards the end with 'Misfire', 'Bring Back That Leeroy Brown' and 'She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes)' being quite weak compared to the first half (May proves on the latter that he by far is the weakest singer in the band). An unfocused but very entertaining record.
Love queen!
I had forgotten about this album, listening to it reminded me of what Queen was originally about. There are some great tracks on this album and it’s easy to see this album as the beginning of Queen as they became in the late 70’s
Gets a four from me, first half of the album is entirely excellent but falls away a bit after that.
Quite a nice album. A bit fever-dream-ish at times. Easy to get through.
I really liked the album but felt some weaker moments covered up by a good guitar solo.
4.3 Loved this album. Really entertaining throughout, with a bunch of Queen I wasn’t previously familiar with.
Lovely
probably the best Queen album I’ve heard
I love Queen and have listened to this album many times. It's not their best but I feel like it's the album where they really started to find their stride and it's a sign of what was to come. Killer Queen is obviously the track most will know but I've always like Queen best when they get into the heavier stuff. Stone Cold Crazy is the jam (and I loved the Metallica cover) and the solo in Brighton Rock is outstanding.
I specifically liked the guitar in Brighton Rock, but everything else was either great or at least fun to listen to.
Even minor Queen is great stuff
Some excellent songs on here, and some meh ones.
