Reviews (page 11 of 13)

Overall a decent album… sort of all sounds the same

The start of this album feels NOT very Queeny. Killer Queen might be the only song I know on this album. I suppose this album is surfacing to me that I don't know Queen all that well! Super interesting and unexpected album.

As a casual Queen fan, I didn’t recognize any of these besides Killer Queen. Makes sense. Definitely the best song though there were still some good others

Killer Queen is one of my all time favorite songs. This album is very 70s rock. Tenement Funster was new to me and really embodied that 70s rock feel. Overall, decent album. They are very talented but make some odd stylistic choices (Lap of the Gods and Leroy Brown, I’m looking at you). 3

The instruments were very crisp and sounded great. I thought Freddie’s voice on this album was not as strong as some other songs of theirs.

I don't get all the hype. Yeah Freddy Mercury can sing pretty well and play the piano pretty well but I don't understand why they are held up like gods in rock. I just don't think they sound that original and they sound kinda pretentious. I dunno maybe it's just cause they're not my style. The production was really well done though they sounded very crisp.

glam rock not really my thing. musically it's all well put together, but it's just a "meh" from me. wouldn't ever seek it out to listen to again.

A well constructed rock album, although most songs did not really stand out to me. "Killer Queen" I already understood to be a good song, but I think I appreciate it a little more now. Anytime there are Freddy Mercury harmonies they are marvelous. But this album did not blow my mind.

I like Queen, but... Confession time.... I've been alive for 46 years nearly, and never actually listened to one of their albums. I grew up on the Greatest Hits albums, and some of those appear here, but the rest are just kinda meh?

Refreshing step away (mostly) from Best Of material, and cemented Brighton Rock among my favourite Queen tracks of all time

so fun so fresh, first time listen

There’s better Queen out there

Solid breakout album, one of their heavier albums but not my favorite

Classic Queen

Good, but not their best.

Plenty of talent on dispay, but it didn't come together in a way that blew me away.

Don’t know more than half the songs on this album. Short and quick though

There's lots of filler... But the hits are huge and Brian may and Freddie Mercury are class

I know Queen well enough to know about them - lots of filler songs I never heard. It’s a fine album - didn’t move me. Potentially didn’t pay enough attention, but I blame the record for not grabbing me.

6/10 couple bangers but felt like a lot of filler

Killer Queen Tenement Funster Now I’m Here Stone Cold Crazy Loved the guitar at the end of Brighton Rock. Not their best but still not bad. I’d say just about average

I’m just gonna lead with this: I think Queen is goofy and melodramatic. Musically, they are legendary, especially Brian May’s guitar work, and Freddie Mercury is as talented as hyped, but the band’s consistent over-the-top vocals and songwriting is a little too much for a full album. Each track is impressive in isolation, but the record as a whole is overstimulating and over-produced. I generally like Mercury’s approach to multi-tracking his vocals, but the technique lost its shimmer early in the album. Still an enjoyable listen. Stand out tracks include “Brighton Rock”, “Killer Queen”, “Lily of the Valley”, and “Stone Cold Crazy”.

Started off way more classically rock than I associate with Queen. Definitely saw some of their eccentricity in tracks like Bring Back Leroy Brown.

Enjoyed it - definite highs at the start with Brighton Rock and Killer Queen. Very 70's classic rock sound but with a unique spin that Queen brings to their music. As an album it was alright, but had some pretty skippable tracks

Freddie is great as always. The band presents their usual craftsmanship. Killer Queen is a great track. The rest of the album never even comes close to that peak.

OK album, relatively plodding and without the glam that featured in later works.

Legal, som muito massa, mas não foi UAU, MARCANTE pra mim.

Sounded harder then the rest I know of queen no?

It starts reasonably well with Brighton Rock and Killer Queen is a classic. From there on out… it’s good but felt a little flat for me. When I think Queen, I think umpf and this lacked umpf. 3 stars

Decent queen album. Some hits some ok. Not my favorite by them.

Favorite Songs: Killer Queen Stone Cold Crazy also liked: In The Lap of Gods...Revisited Lily of The Valley Flick of the Wrist Misfire sounds like a Christine McVie song (Fleetwood Mac) HATED Dear Friends Bring Back That Leroy Brown???? was weird Definitely hear the beginnings of Night at the Opera. The operatic style is prevelant but not as polished or inspired as Bohemian Rhapsody. 3 stars

This is the most Queen I’ve ever listened to in one sitting….I think I prefer them sporadically in a playlist….

I really like 4 songs, Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy, and She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos.) Bring Back That Leroy Brown really pissed me off for a reason I can’t quite put my finger on. The rest I mostly found just kinda forgettable. It’s a problem I have with Queen in general. Their Pop songs are so much better than their prog or stadium stuff, Bo Rhap excepted

Some songs nearly bordering on heavy metal, which is cool, but they all seem so unfocused. Every song has like 6 different sections and they’re impossible to follow. You can never get into a groove.

Not bad, very Queen, but not a huge fan in general, but it grew on me a bit, I can see the appeal

Laser beams, electric guitars and long hair 3/5

killer queen remains my fav Queen song

do not find this as their best album probably i think i like the sounds of diff albums more but this isnt bad and i like the cover and aesthetic and ofc killer queen is the cuntiest song ever. i like the song titles though. mot a big fan of the sad slow songs bc i very rarely listen to queen for the sad songs but then again friends is beautiful lool. id overall give it an 80 out of 100

With no background searching done on this album, I feel like it’s written for theater. It’s not what I expected from only listening to their Greatest Hits. There weren’t any awful songs, it’s just that nothing really stuck though In the Lap of the Gods was enjoyable. Choice Cut: Killer Queen

A very solid LP with lush instrumentation unfortunately somewhat overshadowed by some of Queen's stronger efforts to come shortly after. There are several memorable tracks but the eclectic nature of the overall sound does detract somewhat from the cohesiveness of the project, which itself was made in quite a rush. Highlights are "Killer Queen," "In the Lap of the Gods" and its reprise, and a personal favorite, the interlude "Dear Friends".

This was not the first album by Queen that I expected to show up here. Still, was a good listen. 3.5 stars.

Brian May is the main driving force. You can listen to Freddie's brilliance every now and then really come through. When both combine is the best parts of the album. Finishes of really strong with a heart warming ballad

A few absolutely excellent songs on here (Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Now I'm Here) but still not Queen's best work.

Neat, a mixed bag like most Queen albums

Not as good as their other releases. Tried to be more of a pure rocker but still with the queen theatrics. Some of their iconic live records made their debut on this one. Still had the camp without being campy, just didn't quite get there as a full vision for me.

Good album. Queen always has a way of sounding like a big rock opera. So dramatic.

Great guitar riffs and Freddie's fantastic vocals makes a solid, but not spectacular album. Queen has an unmistakable sound that no one else has replicated, I just don't love the rock opera vibe.

While they did made glam rock sound cool and timeless, they didn't manage to take out the generic-ness of '70s hard rock in this effort.

Getting closer to the Queen we know here, but just barely above Queen II. Still not a style I like, but Killer Queen is an all timer!

This isn’t in the same league as night at the opera, but after a couple of listens I appreciate this is a good fun over the top rock album. Killler Queen the obvious stand out, but rest of the album holds up well and the production quality is outstanding for the time. Deserves its place on the list, but not a personal favourite of mine.

I do love Queen's music. This is a good album, but not one of my all-time favorites...

Trademark Queen sound. I didn’t know any of the songs and probably won’t revisit any of them. A quick and fun listen.

There aren’t many of Queen’s big hits on this one but you get plenty of operatic lyrics and Freddie absolutely crushing it. Great guitar riffs throughout the whole album. Killer Queen is far and away the best song on the album. I think this is a really good album but I know there will be better Queen albums on this list, so I’m going to keep it at a three. Will absolutely be listening to it again.

Ekki leiðinleg. 3,5

J'étais contente de voir le groupe mais finalement pas l'album avec les musiques que j'aime le +

Le seul album anglophone que ma mère avait <3

Not bad.bot there best.

Not the Queen I was expecting to hear since I’ve never really listened to them. Brighton Rock was a great track, which I didn’t think was Queen when I first started listening. Then as Tempe album progressed you’d hear some stuff that you’d recognise instantly as Queen. Not bad.

A really interesting listen. Album has one of my favourite Queen tracks on it (‘Now I’m Here’) and I loved the big guitars on ‘Brighton Rock’. But too much operatic nonsense to make me give more than a solid 3. ‘Leroy Brown’ just awful. ‘She Makes Me’ unexpectedly different. All very interesting.

Starting a record with a bit of self-indulgent noodling on the guitar is certainly a choice. Queen really wrote hit songs, and then a bunch of unremarkable junk. They're only not a one-hit wonder because they were so prolific. She Makes Me was my favorite.

Decent glam album. Brighton Rock Is great and enjoyed more then any other Queen album.

Decent. Queen is always a bit too bubbly for me at times. Some solid songs on this album, however.

Only 1 of queens many bangers on this album (in my opinion) so a bit meh but still well arranged and well sung tracks so not bad

Sometimes I forget just how good of a guitarist Brian May is and listening to the old Queen albums reminds you how much this guy rocks. For his listener, May's guitar playing is the stand out of this album. I think you have to be a huge fan of Queen to enjoy a lot of their music. The range of songs and style of music may not be for all, but damn, May's guitar playing is consistently very good to great. As for the album, enjoyed quite a few songs. Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy, Now I'm here and She makes me are my stand outs. Hell, I even liked Taylor's Tenement Funster. Really enjoyed the listen and thought this was a solid album, especially May's guitar. This was a welcome relief after previous 2 albums. A solid 3.5 for me. Not great but an enjoyable listen. 3.5

"Sheer Heart Attack is probably my second least favorite of the pre- "The Game" albums behind "Queen II". At least this has more memorable songs. This album feels like Queen's "Green" by Weezer. The last one had no radio hits so they over-corrected on the next release. This does have my favorite Queen song though in "Killer Queen". Not sure what it is about that song. I think it shows a glimpse of what Queen would achieve with "Night at the Opera" and beyond. Plus I feel like most songs rarely mention lasers and I think that's a shame. I never really understood the draw behind "Brighton Rock" tbh. The solo is cool and stuff but idk, it's never particularly blown me away. All in all "Sheer Heart Attack" is another fantastic building block in the sound that would eventually become what Queen is known for and also has a bunch of crap that they wouldn't be. 3.5

3.5 I’ve mentioned before that I’m not the biggest Queen fan in the world, but this album does kick off with what’s probably the single best non-David Bowie-featuring song of their career. That’s right, Brighton Rock babyyyy - and I have no shame admitting that Baby Driver was 100% what turned me onto it (come on, that scene was cool as hell). Anyway, that aside, as a whole, this album definitely feels like a continuation and evolution from the sound of Queen II, but for me, it just doesn’t quite reach the same highs. Once again, you can definitely tell which songs were written by Freddie and which ones by Brian May (and which one is the token Roger Taylor song), and once again, they complement each other nicely, but something about their work here just doesn’t feel as grandiose. Now I’m Here is no Father to Son, and Killer Queen is no Ogre Battle (sorry to all the Killer Queen fans out there - it’s not a bad song, but it’s not one of my favorites). The way that Tenement Funster, Flick of the Wrist, and Lily of the Valley all connect is cool and well-done, but it ranks relatively low in the grand scheme of Queen epicness. And that’s just how I felt about the first half - the back half of this thing devolves into what feels like a lot of half-baked ideas, especially with the stretch of Dear Friends to Bring Back That Leroy Brown. It’s at least a short stretch, and they’re followed by a nice return to form in She Makes Me (German soldier in stilettos, the Star Wars fodder with terrible aim didn’t exist yet) and a really solid closer in In The Lap of the Gods… Revisited. It doesn’t seem that the track has a ton of similarities with its previous incarnation on the album, but I really enjoyed and ultimately preferred it nonetheless. So yeah, pretty good listen, but far from perfect. Queen was definitely still finding their footing a bit here, but to be honest with you, I would still take a number of songs off this album and their previous over many of their later hits. Also, jfc Freddie’s chest hair on the album cover

Perfectly pleasant, but I probably won't listen again.

I like Queen, probably the best live gigs I've ever been to but to me they are a greatest hits band. Some great tracks on here but a lot of it passes me by

I didn’t care for this album when it first came out(yes I’m that old) and my opinion of it hasn’t changed with age

Solid album. Love Freddy Mercurys vocal range. Not really any generics here. 3.2

A classic Queen album. Might use one of the songs as an audition song.

Know a couple queen songs but not many. Definitely a classic identifiable sound in Mercury’s vocals. ‘Killer Queen’ the biggest hit of the album (and only one I knew), but lots of fun variety regarding time, emotion throughout. Lyrically impressive with some sophisticated rhyming but still cohesive. Some really nice guitar solos across the board. ‘Lap of the Gods’ seemed to imitate Pink Floyd, in sound style as well as the echoes in the revisit at album’s end. I’m not a huge fan of the ballad-style songs although ‘Dear Friends’ was nice. Reference to Jim Croce’s character in ‘bring Back Leroy Brown’?

Roger Taylor is a good singer too. Hey I’ve never listened to much Queen this was really good. Grand. Large. Muscular. Very good. Sometimes over the top. What’s the top for anyway?

It’s not bad but not something I will revisit. Killer Queen remains a banger but the rest sort of blurred together

Never heard any of these songs except Killer Queen. Good to have a listen to this earlier work.

Don't think I have ever heard the whole album before

Very wild and unhinged, amazing guitars and vocals.

Just can't get into Queen. Theatrical, carnival-esque, belongs in a musical

Some great songs on this album. I'm a fan of Queen, however there's quite a few songs that I didn't enjoy.

Þetta er fínasta plata. Klassískt rokk. Rúllar vel í gegn en fyrir utan hittarana er þetta ósköp döll.

Some very creative cuts on this album.

Wow, lots of Queen stuff is heavier rock than what I know.

I liked this album. It had good beats and was interesting.

Obviously heard of them. Recognise a couple of the songs. Should be a fun listen. It’s alright but not my favourite queen stuff. 3.

Not a huge queen fan, but it was nice enough.

pretty good but not their best. 7/10

Nice album.

I just don't like Queen, but I think it's cool to be reminded that before going all opera rock on us, they actually rocked for a while. I still think that most of the songs are rather by-the-numbers 70's hard rock but with Freddie Mercury's exceptional voice. Stone Cold Crazy must be the wildest Queen track.

Hey, after all, it's Queen. Still not their best.

Killier Queen, Now I'm Here and Stone Cold Crazy are great songs, but the rest of the album is like your average 70s rock songs. Still.. They got their own sound, perfect singer and insane musicians.

I mean it’s Queen. It’s not gonna be bad. Not the kind of thing I’d choose to listen to but still good. Killer Queen remains a classic.

Rockig, symphonisch, verschiedene Stile, die Stimme von Freddy Mercury... Daumen hoch. Killer Queen wird auch heute noch manchmal im Radio gespielt. Trifft also den Geschmack von vielen. Meinen auch :)

Queen does some show tunes and what not. Some catchy tunes. It’s alright.

It's Queen, they are legends so I'm supposed to love them.

Good Album. But not Queen's best.

This album is fine, but glam rock is not for me. I cannot get into the over the top and excessiveness of the genre.

Eclectisch, hardrock afgewisseld met meer kitsch en ballads en theatraal, al wat nog zou volgen. Hard is echt hard, pseudo metal, Led Zeppelin.

Hmmm? Kai tämä monipuolisuudellaan paikkansa lunastaa. Riippuu mihin vertaa, mutta ainakin muuhun Queenin tuotantoon nähden jää vaisuksi, koska ei esim. ärsytä yhtään. Se Motörhead-tyyppinen crazy-biisi ilahdutti.

weird. but kinda nice

decent album, shows queen is more than 100 nr 1 hits

I can recognise each of the guys’ individual talents but their songs just don’t click with me

just generic queen and no hits.

Some classics. Some new to me. And what an album cover.

Queen has better records. They are a band that I think it's great but also don't really want to listen to that often so this can't ride above a 3 even though there is tons of talent here.

I went into this album with very low expectations, as I generally don’t like Queen. I even joked about wanting a “skip button”. However after giving this a good listen, I can confidently say “it’s not bad”

Fast paced and grand, what you expect from Queen. It was interesting listening to a whole album and not just the greatest hits. It didn’t disappoint

Mercury is obviously one of a kind but this isn’t one of my favorite Queen albums.

- it’s Queen so I can’t be objective - still imo not their best album - Killer Queen is a .. killer .. track, stone cold crazy too - rest is okay(-ish) for me - 3,5 / 5

Some good tracks but not their best.

Better than i expected cant say i had ever listed to an entire Queen album in its entirety, as always just a radio friendly singles band

pretty good stuff. Haven't heard most of these songs

Less vocal, more melody.

тут я наконец прочитала что это глам рок и теперь догадываюсь почему мне тяжело подряд много их слушать

Sheer Heart Attack is the third album by the British rock band Queen. This was the first album of that "classic" Queen sound of hard rock guitars instead of the earlier progressive rock. The songs were heavier and more concise which made this album more popular, and the band's skills were at the top of their game. This album has been certified platinum in Canada, Poland, and the UK, and certified gold in Japan, Sweden, the Netherlands, and the US. I love Queen, but this is the first time I've listened to this album in one go. Overall it was great, with some standout tracks that entertain from start to finish. However, some of these songs seem forgettable to me, like they could be rock songs from any band during the 70's. Although Queen transitioning to hard rock was a good idea in the long term, I think I missed some of the earlier work's charm on this album. Still, an amazing band and album though.

Killer Queen is an all time favorite song

A few good songs among more bad ones

Impressive rock album with instrumentals, vocals and composition

For me, Queen is one of those bands whose singles I like but albums not as much. This is no exception. Killer Queen is great, and the other songs are fine, but overall the album is just good, not great.

Some decent jams, and no real bad songs. Still, it is interesting to see how much filler there is in the Queen catalog.

Queen killer was cool. Didn’t like tenement funster. Freddie always makes awesome harmonies and Brian May is such a talented guitarist. Not their best work that Ive heard but I only know the hits.

It’s not that I don’t like Queen, but I happen to think about them as a “singles” type of band. It is quite difficult to me to listen a Queen album from head to toe. Sheer Heart Attack has some cool songs, but some tunes make the experience difficult. 3.5 / 5

Cool to here some of queens earlier stuff

It's weird, half the songs I thought were good, the other left no impression on me, what a strange album. Plus it's nearly the length of a film, there's two whole albums worth of stuff here!

Some hits on this album, other songs not lead by Freddie aren’t memorable to me at all.

Influential I’m sure, not my current taste.

Killer Queen is the highlight

Way more rocking than I would have thought. I think I had a hard time vibing with some of the songs, but I certainly was feeling others. Overall, it has great tracks like killer queen!

Obviously Killer Queen rips, but I also liked In The Lap Of The Gods. Overall, not hit after hit but a great sound.

I wanted to like this a lot more than I did. “Killer Queen” isn’t my favorite Queen song, but was the only one on the album I knew. The others weren’t my cup of tea - a little heavier rock and less pop than later Queen hits.

I had Queens greatest hits cd in my youth and I loved it! It was an amazing collection of their work. I had never listened to stand alone album of Queen before so I was excited but also wondered why I hadn’t. This album was very average to me, seemed almost like they were finding who Queen would become. Of course Killer Queen is a masterpiece song and one that I’ve heard a thousand times so it really was not special to hear again but interesting to see which album it came from. Excellent guitar work and vocals but again, nothing besides “Killer Queen” as a standout.

Some good tracks. Love early Queen.

Not a great album and too many short poppy songs and a lack of rock credentials.

I own this album. I can say that 14 year old Nancy Miller enjoyed it much more than current me. Freddy Mercury is a genius, but many of these songs did not hold up for me. Notable exception is Killer Queen, which still rocks.

I really thought I knew Queen, but I've never heard this album and only really knew the hit single "Killer Queen" off the track list. This is the Queeniest Queen album I've ever heard. If I had to make a parody of Queen music, I'd just use this album. It's bombastic, chaotic, and super glam & fun. I thought the songs flowed into each other in a really unified way, making this almost feel like a concept album and difficult to select a single track as a sleeper hit for me. I think I liked "Stone Cold Crazy" best, but "She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos)" was also super weird and different from a lot of the rest of the album. Overall, just a fun listening experience hearing deeper cuts from a band who's hits are so well known.

Not a great fan, but the sound is distinct.

Gøy med litt Queen i blant

7th best queen album

All of the individual parts are great, particularly Freddie and Brian, but the only really great songs on this album are Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy, and Brighton Rock, with everything else just being very nice and listenable.

super clean transition from "Flick of the Wrist" into "Lilly of the Valley"

it was a great listen, definitely liked killer queen, it had some great mellow tracks and some great faster tracks as well.

Overblown theatrical rock from a band I've never loved. I just don't get their swing of styles from metal to cabaret "Now I'm here" rocks though. 2.75

I’ll be honest, I never knew this Queen existed. The only one I was familiar with was Killer Queen. Some of it sounded quite like the other high camp Glam legends KISS too (teaser for a later album?). Brighton Rock really stood out.

Another odd Queen album. I feel like you really have to be in the mood for this. I did enjoy She Makes Me so I’ll go with a 3.

A good album but not nearly as good as their best. Rocks pretty hard while including some of the “theatrical “ elements that would emerge later.

Enjoyed!

Unfortunately falls into the “the singles are good!” trap

Bombastic bilgewater, pretty fun in parts. Exactly what I expected :) Lap of the gods wis guid

An early Queen album and kind of a boring one. Killer Queen still slaps, Tenement Funster sounds like a Who tribute band, Stone Cold Crazy is ridiculous and fun (I guarantee at least one King Gizard member loves that song), Misfire's riff between verses was so out of place it truly made me laugh. Many of the songs here sound very much like Queen wasn't sure where their sound was going. It's silly and weird, but not in the way of future Queen albums, in a more accidental way. I don't think this album was trying to make me laugh as much as it did. Diverse, but not cohesive, still fun though.

parece rock anos 80 pré welcome to the jungle

Found out that Killer Queen was from this album

Good music, but since it was Queen I expected more

Who doesn’t love a bit of Queen?! Excellent album full of exactly what you expect! Not their greatest album, but I can see how it would have been fire back in the day!

I liked the album. I see Sheer Heart Attack as a step on the path to greatness. The music that would characterize the band in later albums can be heard to emerge here.

I'll take this over any Guns and Roses or Motley Crue. 7/10 Queen and Bowie are glam at its finest.

A pretty solid album. Killer queen is one of the those songs you hear and say, "oh this must be a queen song" The rest of the tracks sound like pretty standard classic rock. That's a good and bad thing. The songs are pretty good, but none really blow me away

I like Brighton Rock, I like Killer Queen and Brian May goes to work on this album but overall I find myself liking Queen less than I'd like to.

Inklings of things to come.

Stylistically it’s kind of all over the place.

Some good tunes! 3 stars

I didnt hate it... I mean killer queen cmon now nolan

Hey look I've found a Queen album that's kind of OK! Two things I liked: Brian May can sing, and She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes) basically invented the shoegazing genre.

Just ok for the most part. Killer Queen is unreal

There are some great tracks on Sheer Heart Attack, but it’s brought down by the sillier novelty songs. It’s still worth a listen, though. I feel like Queen are at their best on their hard rock cuts.

Overblown bombast, but then it is Queen, so that is exactly what one would expect. I bought this as a teenager a few years after it was released and still have it somewhere, but it doesn't stand either the test of time nor the development of my musical tastes. Still, the good bits are great, and for nostalgia's sake, I've bunged on an extra star!

A somewhat underwhelming entry. The low parts aren't as introspective as Queen can be, and the highs aren't quite as bombastic as they can be.

Classic badass but fun quintessential queen. First track has some wild thrash metal guitar passages. Sometimes the kitchy 50s Americana vibes reminded me of Zappa. There’s a little bit of filler on here but altogether Queen doing what they do best.

Un muy álbum de rock, con teatralidades típicas de la legendaria banda británica. Sin duda, el peak del disco es "Killer Queen", una de las mejores canciones de rock de la historia.

I agree….I like the thick, dripping guitar tracks. Besides Killer Queen, I was not impressed. I’m generous at 3S.

two queen albums in a row. at least this one is slightly more enjoyable. meh highs and profoundly low lows. fav songs: tenement funster, stone cold crazy, misfire, she makes me.

I don't think I listened intentionally enough but queen songs all sound the same

The first half is an easy 4, but it falls off quite a bit in the second half.

Usual queen bombastic approach but none the worse for that. Glorious nonsense.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - Killer Queen (2) 2 - Brighton Rock (1) 3 - Now I'm Here (6)

Good early Queen. The harmonies and guitars are there even if the songs aren’t as memorable. Killer Queen still kills, though.

I like Queen's hits and some of the more popular album tracks. I find their albums to be overly bombastic and overproduced. I know, that is what a lot of people like about them, but it's what I struggle with when hearing an entire album. This isn't bad and probably deserves to be on the list, despite the fact I didn't particularly love it.

Man this song has a strong opening with Brighton Rock and its guitar solos. Baby driver was sure on to something. After that another classic with Killer Queen. However after the two opening songs I felt like the album just fizzled out a bit. It felt like preparation for their next album "A night at the Opera". All of the elements are there, the execution is just so much better on the next album

Ok. I like the songs i liked and that was kind of it for me

Better than Lynyrd Skynyrd

Not really knowing Queen (or how their sound evolved/if it evolved,) this album sounds like a hodgepodge of classic rock, operatic/Broadway musical, and psychedelic music. Brian May's guitar sound is unmistakable but there are some songs where I wonder if it's actually Freddie Mercury singing, or someone else. This must have blown some minds when it first came out.

Yet another blast from the past!

Not my favorite version of Queens sound

but more rock oriented than they normally are but the best songs of theirs aren't here

”Sheer Heart Attack" is the third studio album by the legendary British rock band Queen, released in 1974. The album opens with the upbeat and infectious "Brighton Rock," which features Brian May's iconic guitar solo. This track is followed by the hard-hitting "Killer Queen," which became one of Queen's biggest hits and remains a staple of classic rock radio. Other standout tracks on the album include the hard-rocking "Stone Cold Crazy," which features frenzied guitar work and pounding drums, as well as the anthemic "Now I'm Here," which boasts a memorable guitar riff and Freddie Mercury's powerful vocals. One thing that Queen have going for them on this album is the variety of musical styles on display. From the glam-rock of "Killer Queen" to the hard-rock of "Stone Cold Crazy" and the theatrical balladry of "Lily of the Valley," Queen proves that they can excel in many genres. The album does features some of Queen's most experimental work, including the avant-garde "Flick of the Wrist" and the progressive rock epic "In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited." These tracks showcase the band's willingness to push boundaries and explore new sounds, something that would actually become a hallmark of their later work. Overall its mix of catchy hooks, powerful vocals, and intricate instrumentation that deserves a listen if you like rock music. Close to a 4 this one.

Not bad.

They have got their big joyful sound minted here, and the record’s never less than entertaining, but there are maybe only 2-3 eternal foot-lifters here, KQ included.

Starting to sound like the classic Queen. Killer Queen is great, of course, and you can hear the origins of Bohemian Rhapsody in Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley. The rest is OK

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, some great riffs and stellar vocals Favourite song: Track 2 - Killer Queen

Sounds like queen.

Quite melodic with beautiful sounds - especially from Brian May's screaming guitar and Fredies iconic voice. You know you're listening to early Queen, with their incredible sound and brilliant chord progressions. It's a very good record, but not quite as good, for me, as their next one, "A Night at the Opera".

This album had some songs that I think I genuinely like more than a lot of the big Queen hits, but they're also kind of more generic "classic rock" tracks. All in all I liked it but it was a bit hit-or-miss for me.

Loved the music and all the instruments used in the album. Not necessarily one I could listen to on repeat.

p328. 1974. 3 stars. Classy but arch early 70s rock. Underneath the shiny chrome production there is a decent rock band trying to get out. A couple of stand out tunes, but too much filler to repay repeated listens. Brian May seems like quite a good guitarist.

Hard hitting glam rock from Queen. Personally prefer this to the more progressive albums. Quite ok.

More metal than I was expecting. Honestly, surprisingly annoying, very guitar forward and doesn’t really highlight Freddy’s incredible vocal range.

Always original, but not my favorite from Queen.

Alright, Sheer Heart Attack. Let me just start by saying that this album is no A Day at the Opera or News of the World, but it's definitely worth a listen if you want to understand where Queen found their sound before they became... well Queen. The album kicks off with the track "Brighton Rock," which is like a musical rollercoaster that takes you on a wild ride through Freddie Mercury's incredible vocal range and Brian May's electrifying guitar solos. And let's not forget about "Killer Queen," which is a classic Queen hit that showcases the band's pop sensibilities and Mercury's flamboyant lyrics. But let's be real, not every track on this album is a banger. "Dear Friends" sounds like a lullaby for insomniacs, for instance. However, there are still some hidden gems like "Bring Back That Leroy Brown", which - let's face it - is catchy as hell, and "Stone Cold Crazy," which foreshadows the heavier sound that Queen would explore on later albums. All in all, Sheer Heart Attack may not be Queen's magnum opus, but it's still a solid album that showcases the band's talent and innovation. So, if you're a fan of Queen or just looking to explore some classic rock, give this one a spin. It may not get you to "Bohemian Rhapsody" levels of ecstasy, but it'll definitely, in one way or another, get you there.

Enjoyable.

Decent queen album strong start but declined somewhat. Nearly a 4 but not quite

Strong 3, enjoyable development of their style

quite Queen. Sometimes I think it is great, then it just drifts off into too much.

Liked the hits, rest was Meh.

Like 3 unbelievably great songs and the rest is only ok.

This album is definitely the birthplace of the Queen that everyone knows and loves. They're still not all the way to that "full Queen experience" point, but you can definitely hear the hints of what they would become, especially on the hit track "Killer Queen". I would say they're still playing around heavily with their sound at this point, though. Regardless, this album is definitely the jumping off point, soundwise, for their biggest and most well known songs. Speaking of the album's sound, it's really got a bit of everything: glam music and lyrics, those excellent Freddie vocal harmonies, and some slightly off kilter, fun vocalizations and instrumentations. There's a wide variety of music here, too, but it all sounds unapologetically like Queen. This isn't my favorite Queen album, but it's a great lead in to their iconic sound.

I'm not a big Queen fan, so this was new to me. They were all pretty solid from the get-go.

The entire time I'm listening to this, I'm thinking, "why does this sound like some sort of MetallicaXBoston mashup. Call it pop metal? I do not know what to make of it. I know Queen's hit songs. I had a short period in high school where I really listened to their hits multiple times a day. I think I knew Killer Queen. Back then, my focus was mainly on Freddy Mercury's pipes. Everyone knows he has them. Maybe I either wasn't listening to the right songs, or just wasn't listening at all. Brian May's guitar gave this album a hard rock edge to it that was very much appreciated. The little delay on the first song caught my ear. Now I'm Here and Misfire were a couple other favorites that I thought showed him off. By the end, it felt like everyone in the band was really doing something. It came to me while listening, but my old guitar teacher told me all members of Queen were inducted into the Song Writing Hall of Fame individually, so I shouldn't be surprised by the talent. Some songs were less memorable than others. I thought Bring Back That Leroy Brown was a show tune, and was somewhat telling of them writing a rock opera. I then learned said opera came out a year later. If this was evident on earlier Queen, I apologize for my naivety. May or may not revisit. It's snowing in New York.

Well here's the first Queen album I've ever listened to. Brian May can shred. Freddie Mercury can sing. My favorite part is on "Now I'm Here" when Freddie Says "now I'm here" then switches to the right channel and says "now I'm here" then switches again and says "now I'm there" then switches again and says "now I'm there". A real highlight. In all seriousness I think the reason why I never got into Queen is because it's too much like musical theater, a theme I'm likely to repeat several more times in my reviews. It just feels so dramatized. Rehearsed. Does that make sense? Additionally, I think it's a little too "fun" for my liking. It's like I'm watching clowns throw pies at each other to the tune of screaming guitar solos and epic drum hits. Again, great musicianship from everyone. Just don't really get all of the constant vocal harmonization and modulation. It was very cool hearing proto-Metallica on "Stone Cold Crazy" (which they later covered!) and I enjoyed "She Makes Me (Stormtrooper In Stilettos)" because it reminded me of some other band that I can't place at the moment but see that's just it. The only tracks I enjoyed reminded me of something else. Another one that is understandably on this list but one that I personally didn't really vibe with. I didn't NOT like it. It just isn't my go-to sound.

Killer Queen alone is worth three stars, so that’s your starting point. The A Cappella version of Bring Back That Leroy Brown puts their voices and harmonies on full display and was really fun. The rest of the album wasn’t particularly enjoyable listening for me, but my view of their talent sure went up a notch. I guess I never knew how overtly theatrical their sound was; so many of these songs sound like show tunes. Okay, not Stone Cold Crazy, but certainly Now I’m Here. I guess that all makes sense, because their next album would have the all-time quintessential rock opera Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m not a huge Queen fan, but the next two albums after this one were ones that all my friends owned in the 70s and played over and over again. This one is interesting as a prequel. And of course for Killer Queen. By the way it took me about 20 years to realize that the first line of Killer Queen is a reference to a champagne. And only because I saw it in a store and said it out loud.

I have never—with the exception of some greatest hits compilations my childhood friend Brendan Vinnicombe used to play incessantly in his Mom’s SUV—listened to a Queen record. This might have something to do with my upbringing. My Dad—never the prog rock fan—used to decry the band as being “too theatrical” and “operatic.” He preferred his Grateful Dead, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and the likes. I followed suit. Never to listen to Queen outside of Brendan’s Mom’s SUV or otherwise in the public sphere of film, radio, and advertising. Before today I couldn’t have told you what years the band was even active or how many albums their wealth of hit songs were spread across. I was quite surprised to discover Queen was experiencing success this early in the 1970s, and that they would become one of the few 1970s acts that would find success in the 1980s. What strikes me most about Sheer Heart Attack is the musicianship. This is just excellent. Weird. Powerful. Maybe it reminds me of the Doors the way they seamlessly incorporate non-rock elements into a pure rock sound, but in an entirely different way. I’m blown away by May’s extended guitar soloing in “Brighton Rock” and by the experimental recording techniques used on Mercury’s voice and all instruments throughout. I’m also surprised and impressed to find songwriting credits here given to each of the four band members, together and individually and to read that often they switched instruments in the studio. This is a very solid album, with some essential cuts and, as I’m reading, was the first Queen album to really cement the band’s direction going forward. But, as a cohesive album, I’m not sure it totally succeeds. It just doesn’t do enough to be that weird or break new ground. It may be a step forward for Queen but, with the exception of “Killer Queen,” the step feels small. In spite of its strengths, I find the album’s eccentric allure to be not that unique in a year (1974) that also saw the release of King Crimson’s Red, Bowie’s Diamond Dogs, Eno’s Here Come the Warm Jets, Supertramp’s Crime of the Century, and so on. I think this album fits quite neatly into the weird theatricalities of British Glam Rock of the day. Irregardless of the timeless, larger-than-life phenomenon Queen would someday grow into, in 1974, Sheer Heart Attack just fills out the margins of an already vibrant scene. And with the exception of a few cuts off this Queen record (namely, the first two, “Now I’m Here,” and “Stone Cold Crazy”), there isn’t much calling me back to listen to this record in full. Of course Queen is a hugely influential, important act with incredible musicians/songwriters and quite possibly the greatest front person of all time in Mercury. But otherwise, I kind of agree with my Dad. I don’t think this is all that’s cracked up to be as far as albums go and if I’m listening to a Glam/Prog rock band from England who released an influential album in 1974, I’m listening to Supertramp 6 times out of 10. 3 times out of 10, I’m listening to Eno. And I’ll save that last time for King Crimson. But I’d certainly save a shout out for “Killer Queen.” And I look forward to uncovering some other Queen albums elsewhere in this list.

OK - one Killer tune, and one or two other bangers. The rest of it is pretty standard 70s hard rockin - not bad, not amaze

I really don't like to listen to Queen. That is, their greatest hits (that's all I really know). I acknowledge they've got talent, but their sound/style irks me most of the time. Sometimes a band's greatest hits don't tell the whole story, so I was hoping this early Queen album might reveal another side of Queen that I could enjoy. I had high hopes hearing Brighton Rocks and Killer Queen doesn't bother me quite like some of their other songs. But it didn't take long for me to realize that Queen leaves a pretty honest first impression. No surprises here for me really. I did like a couple of tracks (Stone Cold Crazy, She Makes Me), but I'm not going to listen to this again. It's pretty much the same Queen I already know with less catchy, less memorable tunes. And they're always going to sound like Queen.

Queen’s best songs are among the best I’ve ever heard from any band. But I’m still waiting to hear an album that’s solid all the way through. This one charges out of the gate and the first five songs are fantastic. No one else has a sound like Killer Queen and Flick of the Wrist. Two songs I could hear at any time in any mood. The second half of the album doesn’t hang with the first, unfortunately. Stone Cold Crazy is great, but the rest are unremarkable. The album definitely belongs on the list. Just wish it were more consistent all the way through. 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding

Queen's third record is a pretty solid one. Has some very strong songs, but also some of their weakest songs. They can definitely write impressive compositions, their vocals taking the spotlight most often. And Brian May's guitar playing is fantastic. Key tracks: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Tenement Funster, Flick Of The Wrist, Lily Of The Valley, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, In The Lap Of The Gods... Revisited 7 out of 10

It was alright, but a little silly. I think it’s the worst Queen album on this list. Favorite song: “Killer Queen”.

Not bad probably one of their better albums

Several very fun and dramatic songs on a not-so-cohesive album with quite a few filler/so-so songs. In other words, a Queen album! They were more of a singles/best-of band on the whole. But, you have to appreciate their flare for drama and of course, the fact that they achieved mainstream success as LGBTQ artists when that wasn't the norm. Overall, I would not go out of my way to listen to this an album, but it has some banging tracks.

Killer queen

Really proves that Queen are an amazing ‘Greatest Hits’ band, especially as this album falls apart at the end.

Queen are such a unique band. I liked this album, though really not many hits on it. The standouts are solid songs but aside from that I don't think I'd spend much time listening to the other tracks, so I don't think I'd come back to this one as a record to listen to all the way through. Still solid though. Standout Tracks: Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, Misfire, She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos)

A lot of irritating vocals but overall reasonable music.

that classic operatic, eclectic Queen sound. some legendary moments, but largely fodder for high school theater types to play at their parties

Glorious glam solos and echoing glam vocals. Multi-sectional, opera-like, theatrical rock. So beautiful, sometimes soaring, sometimes playful. The common metaphor employed is that we're in the hands of God (the gods), but not with Queen. It's the lap, not the hands.

Ok so it's Queen and I love Queen but I've not really concentrated on their early stuff much apart from the hits. It's flamboyant and Glam and theatrical paving the way for A Night at the Opera but there's not much cohesion- it's a bit bitty if you know what I mean?

Freddie carries

Listens: 2 Enjoyed: yeah Starts better than it ends. Some great tracks but not a particularly great album Woulda been a 3.5

Yeah, good. Better than the Beatles, that’s for sure.

good but the opener and closer we’re kinda meh which are like the most important. highlights: Killer Queen and in the lap of the gods (og not reprise)

Starting to sound like the classic Queen. Killer Queen is great, of course, and you can hear the origins of Bohemian Rhapsody in Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley. The rest is OK

Good, but not great album. Dabbling with different songwriters brings a bit of diversity but perhaps at the expense of quality.

Wow, most of these songs are completely unfamiliar to me. Very enjoyable!

Killer Queen is great, and Stone Cold Crazy stands out. However, the album is just pretty good. It's not as good as Night At The Opera.

This was a fun one! Brighton Rock was a good little noodle. The flow between the albums was great and the range was awesome, but glam rock isn't really my cup of tea.

fairly good.

While Queen has a great sound going on this album, I don't think they ever got beyond the impressive 1-2 punch that was "Brighton Rock" and "Killer Queen". "In the Lap of the Gods" and "Misfire" were other stand out tracks for me, but the album lacked cohesion and anything as memorable as "Killer Queen". If I could give half stars, this would be a 3.5 for me.

Somewhat over-the-top, like the coked-out orgy in the cover photo.

Didn’t move it.

4/13, 31%

3 Don’t want to listen on a headphone.

Playing was great so I wanted to like more. Songs just felt like (good!) incomplete snippets so I didn’t know when one ended and the next started…a bit too incomplete feeling.

great sound and very much of it's time.

If I listened to this without knowing the artist, I’d say it was someone making a parody of a Queen album. Still not bad though.

It’s Queen.

It's alright, probably not their best album but interesting to see an early one

Filler, Queen.

sweaty cover, sweaty record

Good album, but much of it seemed very forgettable. Aside from songs like, Killer Queen and In the Lap of the Gods, I don't think I could name a single tune from this album. Best Songs: Killer Queen, In the Lap of the Gods Worst Songs: Bring Back that Leroy Brown

It’s dated. Sounds a bit like it’s from the 60s.

Decent because it’s queen

Sounds like Queen, but not the ‘best’ Queen

I'm a republican, in terms of anti-monarchistic sensibilities and not Trumpian nutjobbery about George Soros putting microchips in vaccines so as to make everyone Mexican. As a poor, grubby British kid, I couldn't fathom the logic of such ridiculous privilege falling onto such inadequates, and if anything my contempt for the monarchy has strengthened, has become as rigid as bone. Somewhere right now, Prince Edward is sitting down, thinking he's inevitably better than you. With that thought, you're seething. As a 2000-era teenager into 70s punk, I didn't rate Queen either. Not to the same extent, but more a surly resentment at the overarching position Queen had across the airwaves: lazy sound editors plomping Don't Stop Me Now or We Are the Champions over footage of sport I cared naught about only reduced the band to the level of soundbite. I couldn't tell if it were possible to like Queen unironically, and I still can't. Can anyone really have Bohemian Rhapsody as their favourite song? Isn't it just buried under the baggage of a million impressions? Anyway, Bohemian Rhapsody is not on this. But what is on this? Some stuff of interest, some stuff not. Stone Cold Crazy successfully presages thrash metal, but any such premonition of thrash metal really would just be a curio. And it's that word "curio" that encapsulates my wariness for Queen. We have here an album comprised entirely of novelty songs, an odd result for such a bunch of noted brainboxes (that said, it is rather in keeping with Freddie's theatricality). Now, you may defend Queen as the Fortnum and Mason of novelty bands, but that's a highly loaded superlative, like tallest dwarf or most literate policeman. Yes, if you want a tribute band at a student ball, a Queen sort is clearly the best option, but who would kick back of an evening and unwind to this with a glass of claret? There are three Queen albums on the list, so I'll save some of my Queen musings for later. But if you want the worst example of a band soldiering on after the lead singer's death, it's not the Doors. After Freddie's passing, the rest of the band recruited Paul Rodgers as Freddie's replacement. It's akin to following Queen Elizabeth with Prince Andrew.

Queen's a great band, but we don't need to put all of their albums on this list. This one is okay in the grand scheme of things.

Killer Queen a classic probably the only stand out tune on this album for me

Decent sound. Unique and creative. Just personally not a huge fan of Queen. But an objectively good sound

Never listened myself before. Rick anthem opera.

Está "Killer Queen" y tiene bastante ritmo, pero los discos de Queen así al completo no me suelen convencer.

6/10 Best Song - Killer Queen

Classic rock is classic, and though Killer Queen is a great song, the rest of the album seems to not yet be as regal as this band would become. Musicality is amazing, however.

Liked it but wasn’t blown away or anything

More glam and heavy than I was expecting. I'd only listened to Queen's later albums in full before and had only heard a few tracks off this previously. I don't think that they hit their stride until the next album but this lays down so pretty nice groundwork for what was to come

Queen always grabs you with the melody and vocals, then a secret earthquake comes rumbles through Brian May’s guitar. This was ok, I only knew Killer Queen and I’d need another listen for anything else to stick

The popular conception of this band over time has become more 'Freddie Mercury and the Queens' than just 'Queen.' This album is a good reminder of how integral Brian May and co. were to making the band's catchy formula work, supporting Freddie's sky-high vocal range with solid backing instrumentals that excel in their own regard. Not every track here is a winner (outside of 'We Are the Champions,' I don't think this band has done well at downtempo tracks, with most being snoozers), but those that shine do so brightly and are memorable to a fault. I will die on the hill that 'Killer Queen' is the best track this band has made, the subtle touch of phaser on the chorus vox is a sign of a band that knows exactly how to make interesting, fun music.

rocking and a rolling

This record continues the overall musical motif for which Queen had become known. Orchestral arrangements, falsetto singing, “royal” subject matter. Not every song is a hit, but the hits do hit well. I am giving this one an extra star exclusively for Brian May’s guitar work, which is once again masterful.

Mixture of Glam Rock and Hard Rock. Lap of the Gods sounds like a Beach Boys song on acid.

Tout un band qui sait jouer ensemble. Heureuse découverte pour moi, hors des sentiers habituels de ce groupe classique.

A significant departure as far as Queen's sound goes, and yet it presents a wholy uninspired and unremarkable collection of tracks. Nothing much to say about it, not great not terrible, the definition of average

High 3. Certainly top 5 Queen album but, maybe not top 3.

i thought i had listened to a lot of queen, but literally had not heard any songs on this album but one. it's okay, not their best. definitely early work.

A couple rock gems with the tight harmonies that define Queen and (now) classic Brian May guitar sonics. But overall too many songs that sound like show tunes or novelties.

I like Queen's greatest hits a lot. But their other stuff just doesn't do it for me. Killer Queen is good enough to bump up the album for me.

Standout tracks: Brighton Rock Killer Queen Stone Cold Crazy

Faster-paced songs are very good, struggles to be consistent with the slower ballads.

I own this already but had forgotten that it is far more rockin' than their later work. Far better in my opinion.
