Reviews (page 10 of 13)
Because it is a Queen Album I'm tending to give it at least four stars! "Killer Queen" is already the essence of the later Queen-sound. "Now I'm Here" is one of the best earlier Queen-songs. "Stone Cold Crazy" is a underrated banger. And "In The Lap Of The Gods... revisited" is an anthem. I also like how some songs float into each other! But in the context of this list an just because the album in total don't convinces me at all, I can only argue strong three stars. Worst: "In The Lap Of The Gods" 3,5
The last Queen album disappointed me so mightily that I am dreading this. Hoping that because this is older, I get less “rock opera” and more “listenable music.” I always believed Queen would be interesting to dive into, but yeah the hits were a warm respite from the garbage polluting the last record. This is all from memory. You think I’m checking my archives??? Buddy when these puppies leave my fingertips, I forget them like I was zapped by one of those memory eraser dealies from the Men In Black movies. Anyway. Let’s get theatrical. Or not. I hold my nose thusly. Brighton Rock - The vocal trades between the vocalist’s falsetto and uhh other voice are reminiscent of “Gimme the Loot.” Not a comparison you thought you’d hear huh? That’s the kinda guy I am. An insane guy. Listen this song is even better when the vocals disappear. Very bold to open an album with a bizarre guitar solo. Very cool. Killer Queen - I think this song would’ve had a hold on me as a ohh say 9 year old. Catchy music had a way of enrapturing my young mind. My old mind? On the fence. Starting to border into the theatrical. The musicianship is nice, but there is a certain “broadway” element that is making me twitch. Tenement Funster - Hey that’s my landlord’s name. Must be nice, reaping the royalties of this horrific proto-glam song AND charging me to live in a place. Well, at least I have a place in the warmth to criticize the ol’ funster’s titular track. Flick of the Wrist - Damn, we have metal moments on this record? The creepy Halloween riff is pretty cool, but the drawback is once again he fact that I can almost see the red curtains drop at the end of the song. Lily of the Valley - Scene change. The monologue at the lowest point. Act II complete. Now I’m Here - Hey gang. Dont lose hope! We don’t have to stand for this malarkey. Old man Funster won’t ever quell our love and he can never stop us ROCKIN’. YEAH! Ugh. At least we get more of that gnarly guitar tone. Shame it has to follow that intro. In the Lap of The Gods - Soarin’ and Borin’ their way into your living room. Stone Cold Crazy - Oh hell yeah. See that works in two levels, one, this song rules, the other is the fact that it’s Stone Cold, and he’s says oh hell yeah. See that’s the kind of crossover content that sends people to my reviews in droves. Dear Friends - The guy can sing. That’s the most boring normie observation ever made, but I’ll be damned if it isn’t true. I don’t care about this song, but it is a showcase for that voice. Misfire - Yeah, it sure was!!1!1 Bring Back That Leroy Brown - He certainly was a swingin’ cat, that Leroy. Hoo boy we’re struggling here. Both for good songs and review content. She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos) - This one is actually kinda fun and modern. Laid back and interesting in the best way. Very 90’s indie folk. Sounds light years (two decades) ahead of its time. In the Lap of The Gods… Revisited - Yes, nothing completes an album by revisiting one of the worst songs. I think my review was mostly negative, but this is actually an intriguing record. They really swung for the fences here and I’m not talking about baseball. I’m talking about a new sport I invented called smashing my stupid piece of shit neighbour’s fence. That’ll teach you to barbecue when I TOLD HIM I get JEALOUS when he cooks burgers on there. It got pretty heated and I smashed his fence real good. Listen. Queen? They’re fine. The guitar playing was good to great, the vocals ranged from entertaining to high school play and rhe sings were mostly meh. We had some highs, had some lows, and smashed some personal property along the way. What more can you ask for? 2.5-3 HIGHLIGHTS: Brighton Rock, Stone Cold Crazy, She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettos)
7/10
Not bad.
6/10
The beginning of Queen’s signature brand of theatrical rock. Queen were much stranger than I expected on the deep cuts, and not every idea lands. Still, it’s a testament to their versatility, even at this point in their career.
This is gonna be a hot take, but I feel like I've been shouted at musically for 37 minutes. I enjoyed it, but I'm exhausted. I love the concept but the production is just a lot. Doesn't really make me want to listen to it again. - Opener: whimsical dad rock. Don't think I will rank this as well as the 'crowd' but we'll see - All I hear is rock ballad after rock ballad. Is every song going to be this over the top? - I want to enjoy it. It's just too busy for me :(
Rating: 3.0 A great step forward from their last album (ANATO) I had to listen to, even though the other album came out first. The other album wanted to beat me over the head with the band’s musical prowess and theatrics, while this one more so gently showed me. I genuinely appreciate that.
3.5
Generally good fun, but a little too pop/ glam for my liking.
Enjoyable—not my favorite Queen album by far.
3.5 stars
Really nice. I mean, it’s Queen. But there are better Queen records. Extra point for the existence of ’Killer Queen’ ofc
This is my least favorite clean album, but it's still a pretty solid album.
Surprisingly good songs that I've never heard before but wow it sounds like a coke-induced heart attack.
I often see/hear Queen being spoken of as a "singles band", and even described as "overrated" in some corners of the internet. Whilst I tend to agree with the former statement to a certain extent, the high points that they've put their name to are ridiculously good. Whilst A Night At the Opera is the more grandiose, no-holds-barred defining statement in Queen's canon, Sheer Heart Attack is a more measured, yet broadly fun time. Are there a few lesser tracks on the album? Of course - I don't think there's much worth fussing about from "Stone Cold Crazy" onwards, which sets an incredibly high bar to surpass, but the highlights across the first half are truly delicious, namely "Brighton Rock", "Killer Queen", "Flick of the Wrist" and "Now I'm Here".
This is my first Queen album on this list and yeahhhhhhh let's say there's a reason people mostly know their greatest hits. Killer Queen is a bop, Stone Cold Crazy still goes hard, but much of this album just isn't as memorable over 50 years later. Did we really need two tracks of In the Lap of the Gods?
Great singing and music, solid album.
I like the main stream Queen songs, not really a big fan of the songs buried in the album.
Gunpowder, gelatine … what the fuck has jelly got to do with anything here? Did they really confuse ‘gelatine’ with ‘gelignite’ - at least two of these people were supposed to be scientists! And don’t say it fucks the rhyme - all they would need to do is switch the next line to ‘laser beam with some dynamite’ and it works. I accept bank transfers or PayPal, messrs May, Taylor and Deacon. My problem with Queen is that, although they are regarded as one of the greatest bands of all time, I have a feeling that this is based on the first two Greatest Hits collections and the Live Aid performance. A lot of the albums are so inconsistent that it’s hard to pin them down - are they rock, or rock and roll, or prog, or opera, or disco, or funk, or vaudeville, or pop, or heavy rock? On this album alone they go from sounding like the Beach Boys to Judas Priest in the space of two songs. Just pick a lane - you are all excellent musicians, but I never know what I’m going to get, and I can’t really be bothered with their albums.
Overblown, dramatic, everything you’d expect from Freddi
6/10 some very good songs but mostly classic rock filler 7-16-2025
Good Queen. Not Great Queen. Much of it just didn't leave a lasting impression.
I grew up listening to a lot of Queen, one of the few bands my dad actually liked (not much of a music person strangely). But this album was never in rotation and I did not know about it until much later in life. And really for good reason, it isn't a bad album and none of the songs are awful, it is just meh. The cool thing about this album is that you can hear the early workings of what will make them an iconic band. 5.9/10 110/1001
Not the best queen album for me. Don’t listen to this often as a result
Queen's theatricality and rock sensibilities on full display. For me, Queen is something to take in small doses, so listening to the entire album is a bit tiring and overwhelming. But there are some good individual tracks - the best discovery for me was probably Dear Friends.
Two all time classic songs. The rest was interesting but I wasn’t tempted for a second listen. Why did Freddie not sing lead on all the tracks?!
Brighton Rock 3.7 Killer Queen 3.5 Tenement Funster 3.6 Flick of the Wrist 3.5 Lily of the Valley 3.4 Now I'm Here 3.3 In the Lap of the Gods 3.3 Stone Cold Crazy 3.5 Dear Friends 3.2 Misfire 3.3 Bring Back That Leroy Brown 3 She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes) 3.2 In the Lap of the Gods…Revisited 3.4 Score: 3.376923077
I don't totally get Queen and I'm not afraid to say it Best Song: Killer Queen Rating: 6.0/10 (Fine) Stars: 3/5
Is that Freddy singing on every song?
Listened in the truck via YouTube music. This one has a very old school rock and roll sound. Some of the tracks are fairly short when they’re known more for longer songs like Bohemian Rhapsody. One of the last songs even had a Beach Boys esq quality to it.
I think I have a natural aversion to queen, and while I didn't hate this - I still wouldn't take the time to listen to it again.
fun I enjoy queen but I didnt feel super passionate about this one. it was enjoyable though
This album is very disjointed for me. I was like the Queen that was, the Queen that it will become and the Queen that could have been. The first song "Brighton Rock" , I kept checking to make sure it was actually Queen and not some Prog Rock group that I didn’t know. The second song was "Killer Queen" which is what Queen became. Then there was "Tenement Funster" blending into "Flick of the Wrist" which sounded like it could have been on the first “Black Sabbath” album I had yesterday. Such an odd combo of sounds. It gets 3 stars given the fractured nature of the sounds.
5/10
A mixed bag of high energy dramatic anthems and over the top theatrics. It's as if they were still looking for the right mix of camp, rock, drama...
queen is not giving me a heart attack
Never been a fan of Queen
I don’t really like their album tracks but some belters
Queen
A good record from queen. Not their "best" work. Still solid, great music, great singing, etc. 3.5/5
Queen is clearly a talented band, but they spend most of their talents on ecletic "experimentations" that more often than not misfire. Sheer Heart Attack is... not one of those albums; it's more like a musket... a novelty today that served its place in history, but should not be anyone's top choice of firearm.
It's an enjoyable listen. It's Queen, so it's going to sound great. Killer Queen was the only standout song for me.
Pretty solid album from Queen here. Getting away from their previous works doing progressive rock (thank god!) and more into pop rock. Killer Queen is the highlight song on this album, but Stone Cold Crazy and Tenement Funster are both solid tracks as well. You can see the beginning of A Night at the Opera here, and this album is important. 3.23/5 stars = 3.
3 out of 5. Not bad. I respect Queen and their musical prowess, and thankful it wasn't Bohemian Rhapsody.
Queen is always great!
I realise the last 3 albums now have all gotten a 7/10, I promise this is purely coincidental. Decent album, but feels like Brian May is desperately trying yo be the main character of Queen while it’s blindingly obvious that it always was and will be Mercury. Always thought Killer Queen is one of their best songs, Stone Cold Crazy is pretty great too. Otherwise, it’s just a pretty fine 70s rock album. Brighton Rock (6/10) Killer Queen (9/10) Tenement Funster (7/10) Flick of the Wrist (7/10) Lily of the Valley (7/10) Now I’m Here (7/10) In the Lap of the Gods (6/10) Stone Cold Crazy (8/10) Dear Friends (6/10) Misfire (7/10) Bring Back That Leroy Brown (5/10) She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilletos) (8/10) In the Lap of the Gods… Revisited (8/10) 7/10
Queen just doesn’t quite poop my potty. I understand they’re pretty revolutionary to rock but to me their anthemic theatrics sound redundant. This album specifically, however, I did not have much issue with. In fact, I found it generally enjoyable even. Perhaps I have improperly judged Queen for their dramatic and overplayed hits.
siempre he dicho que no me gustaba mucho queen pero he de decir que este es un pedazo álbum
It's fine
Some good songs and you can see where they were headed.
3 stars
I get that Queen are talented and it wasn’t as bad as I expected but I’ll never listen to this again
Great album
Brian May is a good guitarist, you can sort of hear where they’re starting to move towards shredding and there are some proto Van Halen licks in there. There are some songs that are Ozzy Osbourne esque honestly, I liked this one.
It was okay. There are other Queen albums I like better.
Ok. Can see how it was popular back in the day. Not a queen guy myself though
Not the best Queen but definitely has some of their strongest deep cuts
Not my style I like the classics the old songs are a bit much but the artistry is amazing
I mean, it's Queen. We know it's pretty good, but still? I could listen to a few of these songs, occasionally, but that's it. Solid three stars.
Queen always seems overly theatrical to me. The guitar work is up beat and very classic 70s rock sounding, which I'm a big fan of, though the harmonies seem a little over the top and could probably be toned down. Freddie Mercury's voice is obviously amazing, but again the whole thing seems pretentious and extravagant. Not hard rock enough for me.
Very unique. Nothing else like this in the 70’s
Uwielbiam Queen ale ten album nie koniecznie.
Stone Cold Crazy +1, Killer Queen +1, a quick play, riffs & vocals
Ne znam da li mi se ovo više ili manje sviđa od Queena koji znam ali u svakom slučaju je osrednji album.
++: Killer Queen, Now I'm Here, In the Lap of the Gods, Stone Cold Crazy, Bring Back That Leroy Brown, She Makes Me (Stormtrooper in Stilettoes) +: Brighton Rock, Tenement Funster +-: Flick of the Wrist, Lily of the Valley, Misfire -: Dear Friends, In the Lap of the Gods...Revisited 7,0/10
You can definitely feel the classic Queen sound really start to solidify here. Not much in the way of the big hits (Although Killer Queen is a great song!). Not my favorite Queen album, but not bad.
1st time listening to this one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
It's solid, probably my favorite Queen record I've heard thus far, but the band still hasn't gotten me hooked for a full record.
Not their best 7/10
Some good songs on here, was kind of surprised how "punk" a couple of them sounded. I can't really take Mercury's operatic vocals for an entire album length though.
I'm kind of over Queen - most of their stuff is just overplayed and/or not that good. That said, Brighton Rock is genuinely really good, Killer Queen is pretty decent and then from there this album just gets worse and worse
This is like the bonus Queen disc you would get if you bought one of their greater albums. All really good material, but not on the same level as A Night at the Opera or Queen II. This is an example of an album being on the list because of one great song "Killer Queen" and no bad songs to take it back off the list. As good as it is, it feels standard Queen to me.
Really decent Closer is great, killer queen is killer queen Good
It is fine and all but this list needs to stop forcing Queen on me…. If I click ‘Vote’ and there’s a Queen album again I will combust
Yaaaaas queeens! *schnipp*,*schnipp*,*schnipp* Bi somenere mayestätische Band gaht mer natürli mit königliche erwartige i das ganze ine und ich als chline anti-monarch bin denn au mit tüüfere erwartig us em musikalische palast usezottlet. 3/5 Fav song - Now I’m Here Least fav - In The Lap Of The Gods
Meh, the good songs are good, the rest is boring
oh you guys are having fun now, you guys are having gun now
Brighton Rock goes so hard. Killer Queen has amazing vocals. The album slows down at the third track, but is still pleasant to listen to. In the Lap of the Gods is a very nice ending though. Overall mixed. Unforgettable songs mixed with background noise.
Few absolute classics in the album, but also some quite forgetable ones.
I find Queen has either the best rock songs ever played, or the opposite and everything in between. I do love Stone Cold Crazy as it essentially is the first Thrash Metal song ever.
Meh, has it's moments but was hard to focus on it and not drift away
Liked it more than I thought, but a very one-note album
Not my favourite work from Queen but I did enjoy how the songs seamlessly merged
This is fine but they have better albums
Nice album and I definitely see that it's the starting point for everything Queen made, but I found most of the songs are not as memorable as others that came after
Really loved “Misfire”. Best rediscovery of a Queen song I’ve heard in awhile. Channels the best of Peter Frampton.
A few good songs on here, but most are meh
i've come to terms with just how corny queen are but this album still has some cool moments, stone cold crazy especially. not looking forward to more on this list
Queen makes the links between prog, glam and hard rock explicit in this album. Not sure if that's a good thing. Brighton Rock is hair metal and while I know its hardly fair to criticise Queen of all bands for self-indulgence the three minute guitar solo is full of pointless arpeggios. Killer Queen isn't glam enough. Tenement Funster doesn't rock hard enough. A lot of studio tricks are fun but also sound a bit old (nothing Hendrix wasn't accomplishing on stage). Flick of the Wrist is a preview of Don't Stop Me Now which is cool I suppose. Lily of the Valley is a Freddie Mercury lament without the bracketing high energy bits that you get in Bohemian Rhapsody. Now I'm Here is way more fun with some hard rocking guitar riffs and the rarest of rare achievements - making a 70s rock piano line not sound dorky as fuck. In the Lap of the Gods has some sick stereo panning and is less annoying than a lot of the glam ballad stuff typical of the era. Stone Cold Crazy rocks proper heavy. Misfire is an almost George Michael sounding acoustic number which is cool but helped me realise the Brian Wilson style a capellas are maybe one of the things that turns me off Queen. Bring Back That Leroy Brown is a bit of a weird sort of dixie pop number. Its not bad and Queen is definitely at their best when their tongue is in their cheek. She Makes Me is a disjointed folk dirge and skippable. In the Lap of the Gods is fine. Put it in the 'tracks that you know are Queen songs within the first five seconds' column I guess. Interesting in that it paints Queen's transition from hard rock to glam. There's a couple of good hard rock tracks and a few fun and innovative glam tracks Queen is a really important band but overall I don't really feel like this album adds anything to the annals of music.
Yep. That's Queen.
A night at the opera. Sin embargo no anda muy lejos de ese nivel. Aquí puede decirse que fue donde Queen encontró su sonido, potente, con cambios de ritmo, arabescos, agudos, sorpresas y fuerza mucha fuerza. Sorprenden Lily of the valley e In the lap of the gods (ambas) y sobre todas Brighton Rock.
Ich liebe Queen. Viele Lieder, für die ich Queen liebe, sind nicht auf diesem Album.
Better album than I expected, I think I just don't like Freddie Mercury's voice honestly. Best song: She Makes Me
Very difficult to go wrong with Queen. Some all-time great tracks in this one (Brighton Rock, Killer Queen, Flick Of The Wrist).
Found it kind of underwhelming. Killer queen has always been a fun one but the rest of the album didn't really do anything for me. And slightly annoyed the song sheer heart attack isn't on this album
Pretty good. Wasn't blown away, but a solid Queen experience. Every other song I was finding at least a section that was notable. I find that, like with many genres, the slower, melodic, ballads were the ones that resonate with me the most. Not my usual genre, so unsure how often I will return, but enjoyable
Queen is underrated in how weird their catalogue is. Dig past the hits, and you’ll find some whacky innovation, full of riffs and pizzazz.
Great but not mind blowing. A few misses but overall pretty good
It's a decent album. No bangers. I would go 2.5 maybe, so 3/5.
Wasn't looking forward to this, have never cared for Queen. As a 90s kid, music was about authenticity and raw emotion and Queen always seemed too silly and pleased with themselves to take seriously I was all set to give this a 2, because it's not objectively bad musically, but then I quite liked the last couple of tracks so it's somehow been bumped up to a generous 3.
Fine
It was ok, not one of the better albums though
Vette hits kende er bijna niks van
iconic but not really for me
Feels like early Queen. All the vocals but some hit or miss stuff mixed with classics.
🎧I contend that Queen is not an “albums band” though this is probably the most cohesive record of theirs I’ve heard. It’s got Killer Queen which is very good. It’s also got Bring Back That Leroy Brown which sounds like something from demented high school musical, and not in a fun or interesting way.
Konnte man sich gut anhören, aber sie hatten definitiv bessere Alben
3,5 Sterne, in dem Fall abgerundet.
3 Stars because of Killer Queen (5*+ song)...Yet the third album by Queen (in first 80 albums)...still the same feeling about them: KILLER BEST OFF...but I really don't enjoy their albums as much as I would like to...
No me gusta Queen, no es lo mío. Tres estrellas no porque sea malo, sino porque ni lo escuché y quiero ser justo.
It's fine. Some of the more prog rock inspired tracks are phenomenal, when they really dive into interesting instrumentation, but I can't help but feel like they so often went for the more mainstream approach instead of realizing their full potential.
It was not as good as I would have liked it to be.
When Queen gets campy I find few bands more annoying. But when they're making regular old songs I'm quite into them. This one has a pretty good balance between songs and campy bullshit.
I’m not really a fan of big, over the top, operatic, pop rock; but queen are pretty much the ‘king’ of this style. Do I rate it high because of its influence and importance as an album launching a huge career? Or mid for my personal opinion? Decisions, decisions…
Only knew killer queen prior to listening to this album.
Not the most interesting queen album
Ok
First Queen album. I'm surprised that this one released after Queen II. It feels like they were just beginning to get a hold of their defining operatic style with this album. There's an impressive display of variety and some pretty good vocal performances on Sheer Heart Attack though the lack of a strong creative identity really hurts this album, which is what I value most in music. "Misfire" is good. That lead guitar performance is very distinctive. I feel like I've heard it somewhere prior to listening to this album. "Bring Back That Leroy Brown" is also quite good. A nice vocal performance carried by a good percussion-heavy instrumental.
Some interesting songs on there but didn’t love it overall
3/5
Unlike my cousin Oscar, I'm not such a fan of Queen.
As an early piece of QUEEN, its fantastic. As a piece to discover as a teenager with a lousy cassette tape player, scrabbling through the budget bins of the local record store, it was major find. As an adult with 30+ years wisdom hanging amongst my east as a mat of sophistication and arrogance, I really don't like that album anymore. Its not re-listenable, its not nuanced, its brash, catchy then clunky, and unsubtle. When do I listen to it, is the question I ask myself - at work, nope, while driving, nope, while gardening, nope, when at a party, nope - I cant think of many times I would listen to it with depth and joy - which is a shame. A teenage me did, not me as an adult. So, 2 stars, raised to 3 because of Teenage me.
Terribly directionless start saved by there 2nd track, meanders in there middle but seconds half is pure unadulterated Queen.
Queen is just not for me.
In my opinion this is one of the mid albums of the Queen
Queen Marmite Music making Big hair Birth rite Glam rock Chin shaking Bit cringey No luck
Some good tracks but it's mainly Killer Queen that stands out. I think Queen have talent and are great to listen to and watch their performances but I find them overrated purely because their back catalogue is so dull and this album is no exception. They're the most glorified singles band of all time.
Hits different in the Trump/Musk era. "White Riot" indeed.
Alright but felt a bit forgettable
Brighton Rock best canzone
Killer album, some interesting deep tracks also
Killer queen good song. Rest of album okay 7/10
The Signature Queen sound was just starting to emerge best tracks Brighton Rock and Killer Queen worth another listen
Schön Abwechslungsreich, A Seite sehr angenehm.
Freddie Mercury is so good you forget about Brian May. This album is where Queen stops being weird art Rock and leans more into rock. The guitar on this whole album is BIG. So many guitar players come AFTER Brian May. Not a heavy metal album, but it was trying to lean that way. They really may not have known what they were tapping into.
I personally like Queen when they lean more on their experimental side. But in saying all that this is a fun album. I love freddie's voice and always have a soft spot for Queen.
Strong music as only Queen could make.
Queen have such a definitive sound you always know it’s their track It’s so dramatic I always feel like the albums are mini musicals Dear Friends is so beautiful I think I want it at my funeral Favourite song: Now I’m Here and Stone Cold Crazy
Queen is a great band who make boring albums. They're more of a singles band. It's not that they're bad songwriters, because they aren't. They have some incredibly memorable music. But the stuff that isn't memorable is really forgettable. Sheer Heart Attack has quite a few of those kinds of songs.
First half was good, second half was a little exhausting. I will probably never listen to a full Queen album ever again haha.
Only ever heard Killer Queen from this album. But I dig all the remaining tracks I had never heard before. The opener, Brighton Rock, might be my fave newly heard track on the album.
Never heard this before, except Killer Queen of course. A pleasure to listen to, satisfyingly rockin'.
Pretty ballsy to start the album with a long noodly guitar solo that at times seems to go nowhere. Guitar Hero has embedded Killer Queen permanently into my brain. But it's such a good song, I can still listen to it Lily of the Valley rips so does Now I'm here. Great combo of tracks. Bring back that Leroy Brown is...a weird choice. It's weird even for Queen, who are the queens of weird.
I’ve always liked how this band pursues each member’s songwriting attempts but in this case they should’ve let Brian May handle most of it (having written the two best songs, “Now I’m Here” and “Stone Cold Crazy”). The cheekiness here is dialed up to 11, and that’s not a good thing. I wonder how many “Bring Back That Leroy Brown” fans got their asses kicked by KISS fans. Every album after this from 1975 to 1980 is much better. I recommend Live From Montreal for this band at their peak. I am leaning towards 2.5 stars here but will round up to 3 to stick it to Ross’s 1 star.
Some very fine prog rock, if that’s your thing. Why have I never put Queen in the prog group? I dunno, never tried the full albums I guess. Everything here is carefully made, performed by virtuosos. There’s so much going on in each song it can get overwhelming, but focusing on one part inevitably means you find something interesting happening. Freddie and Brian aren’t my favorites, but damn those boys knew how to use their instruments. “Killer Queen” is an absolutely stunning song. I know I sound like a lame listener, but gimme the 3-minute bangers from Queen. Strip away a little excess and you’ve got a very talented rock band making complex and fun songs. “Tenement Funster” and “Now I’m Here” were nice surprises to me. The back half of the record gets way too cinematic/musical theater for my taste.
Not as familiar with this Queen release. It is nice to give the entire album a spin. Some of the tracks are not my cup of tea. Enjoyable 40 minutes of music for the most part. Tracks I really enjoyed were Killer Queen, Now I'm Here, Stone Cold Crazy, and Misfire. Bring Back That Leroy Brown was a fun, throwback sounding track.
Very queeny. Like the instrumentals and the lead by mercury. The vocal chords are a bit cheesy from time to time.
Embarrassingly, I quite liked even the guitar solo on Brighton Rock, and Killer Queen is very catchy. But this became less of a reassessment as it went on, the sound is not compelling when the melody isn't compelling enough, and the Leroy Brown song is very irritating. Still, 3 is higher than I would have thought.
For me it’s a transitional album. The band started to harness something in Queen II which slightly slipped in SHA, but fully bloomed on A Night At The Opera.
Yeah this was just fine. Queen’s a band that can for the most part exist as a Greatest Hits artist for me and that’s fine. Not a lot of exciting stuff here, but nothing objectionable.
I like Queen and think they have a lot of music that sets them apart from other more generic run of the mill glam rock bands. I didn’t hear a lot of it on this album, though.
well it's fine i guess, i can respect the musicianship and the songs are clearly very well written but i'd be lying if i said this is the peak of music for me personally, and since i can't give something a high score that i personally don't find that enjoyable this will do xx pals i even listened to it twice cause i really wished for it to click
É um álbum bem legal. Gostei muito de Killer Queen, Tenement Funster e In The Lap Of The Gods.
Brighton Rock - weird! Killer Queen - great Tenement Funster - shades of I’m in love with my car(?), ok Flick of The Wrist - ok, I guess Lily Of The Valley - ok Now I’m Here - great In The Lap Of The Gods - no Stone Cold Crazy - not really, thanks Dear Friends - short and moderately sweet Misfire - catchy, not bad at all Bring Back That Leroy Brown - Charleston thing, bit irritating She Makes Me - nice, goes on a bit at the end Would listen again, would probably not buy… 7/10
Killer Queen ist natürlich ein Banger. Die restlichen Lieder sind alle gut, aber jetzt keine extremen Hits - wobei ein paar Lieder das Potential haben, in meiner Playlist zu landen
It’s good album but I prefer the later queen albums
I like this album...
3.5
Queen is a singles band.
Some good hits, but overall quit uneven, and I am not a big Queen fan in the first place. 3.5 stars
3.5
bastante variedad, no muy fan de queen pero esta bien
A few greats, a few fillers.
Sometimes the theatrics really work and sometimes they really don’t, i dunno. Kinda hit or miss but still fun
CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM
High quality production, as is to be expected from a Queen album, but nothing really groundbreaking on there. Solid listen. 3.5/5
a collection of songs that mostly sound nice but dont stick to me, the queen sound is still cool
I'm pretty medium on Queen after all. Once in a while I hear a Queen song that I really like (e.g. "Cool Cat"), but it's always a song that doesn't sound like my idea of Queen. This album does not fall into that category.
Brighton Rock followed by Killer Queen is such a strong opening - but from there it gets a little bit lost and downhill ("Now i'm here" aside) which is such a shame as Brighton Rock is absolute banger and great opener.
Easy to see, despite this not yet being the Queen they would become, the Queen I love. Fun album, but also explains why I gravitate to their singles.
Worse than a Night at the Opera, but still enjoyable.
Sorry Rhys. I like Killer Queen?
A bit overrated.
Heavier and thrashier than their more well known albums.
Reminds me of how much Brighton Rock stands out as a weird track on the otherwise seamless and varied soundtrack of Baby Driver. It's a good track, but just sounded so bizarre over the final sequence of that film. Queen really seem like such a unique band. They are massively popular and everyone knows of them but I really can't think of any bands that truly sound influenced by them. Anyway, it was an alright album. Didn't blow me away but maybe needed more concentrated listening, with some real bangers.
Good. Not earth shattering. Got tired of it by the end.
I see Queen as mora of a singles band rather than an album band, even if there are albums of their I do enjoy. This one is alright. It's more a Hard Rock affair than most of their later, better known material. Knowing what came immediately after, it does feel somewhat transitional in nature. Key tracks: Killer Queen Now I'm Here
Still too theatrical and over the top for me, and the vocals are a weak point, but better than the other Queen stuff I've heard. Not as many shitty, too-long, annoying guitar solos, at least. A good amount of songs of decent length (under 3 minutes). Some catchy riffs here and there. Enough to push it to a 2.5/5, I guess.
Highlights: She Makes Me, Misfire
Not quite my tempo
Better than expected
Never actually listened to this album before, it definitely still has that Queen studio production, with super overdubbed vocal harmonies and Brian May's classic harmonies. The production is a little rougher around the edges though which is interesting. Man Freddie's voice was so god damn good, he sounds insane on this album. Overall I like the album but it's definitely not their best, feels like a precursor for Night at the Opera.
This album is a little Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde for me. Mr Hyde is a generic, boring rock album, and Dr Jekyll is a strange, mysterious glee club album. I just wish there was more of the latter than the former. This is my first Queen album and I'm excited for more of them - but I hope they lean into being weird just a little bit more.
Killer queen is great and there was a song that didnt even sound like queen but there just isn’t a lot here to make me want to come back.
I like Queen a lot, but this album is only mediocre.
Många låtar jag inte hört. Bästa låt Killer Queen.
Can see the pieces of what makes them really great for later albums. Killer queen is always such a bop. Fav songs in the lap of thr gods and dear friends
I don't think this is Queens strongest album. As a Queen fan, this had some interesting ideas, but wasn't doing it for me.
It's fine
A touch less proggy and a little more mass-appealing hard/glammy (but still some proginess to it). Queen does their usual over-the-topness and theatrics. All of their music displays that they’re immensely talented songwriters and musicians. Plenty of fun to be hard here, but just a fine album overall.
The more I listen to Queen's deeper cuts, i.e. every song on this album that isn't Killer Queen, the less I care for both the band as a whole, and the album I'm listening to. I'm beginning to think they are overrated. This album wasn't really it for me. It was okay, and listenable without anything particularly upsetting or offensive - but it was just bland. Killer Queen is obviously a standout, and a great track at that, but otherwise I cannot think of a single other memorable song on this thing. Extremely mid and forgettable album.
Queen has this habit of coming across either really catchy or really annoying. I don't even think it's entirely their fault, I think a lot of negativity towards the band comes from their overexposure. I wouldn't be surprised if every marketing and advertising firm on the planet had a copy of their greatest hits on standby. That being said this album was fairly front-loaded and hit or miss throughout. Killer Queen was the highlight for me, I'm sure some people would prefer something like Stone Cold Crazy or Brighton Rock but the latter of which is tainted by the stupidity of the final act of Baby Driver's plot for me (See? another instance where negativity comes from overexposure). The latter half of the album is also filled with some incredibly short segments that would almost feel more like interludes than their own tracks on a different album. I'm not sure about their inclusion as they sound more like the concepts for a song rather than one in their own right. On a more positive note, Bring Back That Leroy Brown reminded me of Norm Macdonalds 'Meaner than a concentration camp dog' bit. Highlights: Killer Queen, Stone Cold Crazy
Listening to this album made be feel like Vito in the gay club It's a good album, but it's also really fucking annoying Playboy Carti's self titled album is better anyway Front loaded as fuck 7/10 Fav tracks - Brighton rock, killer queen, tenement funster Least fav - none
Killer Queen is good. In The Lap of The Gods was weird. The revisited version at the end is much better, maybe the second best on here. Brian May's guitar work is what makes most of this album kind of interesting. Queen has many hits but I guess they're spread out amongst their lengthy discography. Back and forth between upbeat songs and ballads is a bit jarring. Half the album is pretty unremarkable. Overall pretty meh album; not a good cohesive unit.
eyup, that's queen.
I lost patience listening to this. Early Queen - never my thing. My appreciation for them grew later.
It's one of the better albums of Queen.
- This album is just chock full of glam pop-isms that must have really shaken up the rock world of the time - Each song has a fairly distinct voice, it's difficult to trap this album in a box - Some songs certainly hit harder than others, and I wouldn't call this Queen's magnum opus but it definitely defines what makes Queen so special as movers and shakers"
Actually my favorite Queen album. I was not a huge fan of Queen. Too over the top for me. Didn’t have the rock like many other British contemporaries like Zeppelin. Didn't have the humor and interesting writing like the Kinks for instance. A bit to artsy for me.
It's a solid album. I'm not particularly inclined towards many songs, but there also aren't any bad songs. I particularly like "Killer Queen," "Flick Of The Wrist," and "Lily Of The Valley" (does millia rage reference this?)
Pretty decent album all round. They have such a fascinatingly unique sound. Short of a few songs but you can see where it's going.
3.5/5 Great ideas going on in the album, they just don't develop them great in some cases. Solid album
I have never been a big Queen fan. I’ve always known and liked most of the hits but have found their albums to be a bit of a mixed bag. I bought a rock and roll album guys. I’m not looking to listen to banjo, barbershop, riverboat, the frog from the WB music. I guess Queen’s willingness to experiment is what makes them great but when those experiments miss, they miss pretty big and I end up wishing that I was just listening to their greatest hits.
Pretty fun, pretty chill. I liked killer queen
Killer queen Tenement Funster Stone cold crazy She makes me In the lap of gods 7/10
3.5 Plenty to like. Always. Great to hear Queen. Nothing quite there to push into a floor.
Good
I enjoyed this more than I thought. Still at this point consider Queen a singles act. However this did have a flow and songs segued into one another. Also was nice that most songs were on the short side so they didn’t over stay their welcome. First track I didn’t like, and Killer Queen is one of my least favourite singles. After that the album picked up for me Light 3/5
Well we all know Queen but I have never sat down to listen to an album. It's an alright album to me. Only know Killer Queen. Very Queen though.
Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy were favorites.
It's a Queen album that's for sure. Great hits. Fun. Every one of their albums is gonna be on this list, I feel it.
It's quite varied. Killer Queen is great. I dig the three-part suite Tenement Funster / Flick of the Wrist / Lily of the Valley. Now I'm Here with its disctinctive vocal harmony part is another standout. Gets quite hard rocking in songs like Stone Cold Crazy. As an album, I wanted to like this more but it's messy and I found myself wishing the production was clearer. The second half is also weaker. I know this isn't their best but still interesting.
Glam Rock > Prog Rock. I'm always tickled by the fact that the four members of Queen once held a Guinness World Record as the highest paid corporate executives in the world. I'm ok saying that this is a middling album, in the main because I know where (for me) it sits in the Queen catalogue.
It's a queen album. Flick of the wrist is a good song.
Good
I’m not the biggest Queen fan but this was pretty good, my favorite was “Killer Queen”. 3.5/5
A little frontloaded for me, and the baroque elements are a bit monotone.
I wish I could’ve given this album a more thoughtful listen, but there were a lot of enjoyable moments from what I passively remember. I usually wouldn’t consider myself a Queen fan - there’s songs that I really like but I get tired of the overplayed “Another One Bites The Dust”, “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, etc. I was surprised to find only one recognizable song from this album (Killer Queen) which probably made my listening experience overall more enjoyable. Favorite song: Flick Of The Wrist Least favorite: Bring Back That Leroy Brown Knew before? No
Theatrical
Well for some reason the review I wrote while I listened to this record didn't get saved. I think I said something along the lines of not ever hearing this album before and not really knowing very many songs on it. I like the proggy nature mixed with glam and also rock and roll. Overall it was a fun and interesting listen. The vocals are so over the top sometimes but I'm not mad about it. I remember there being some pretty sick riffs too.
You know I started this record thinking "I just think Queen's Greatest Hits is all you really need for Queen. They're not an album band." But then... I started listening to this and was totally reprimanded! It's so rad! It's the perfect mix of prog and glam. Really cool song writing, fun guitars, good grooves. Then I was like "why does anyone ever only listen to their Greatest Hits?!?!"
Queen, eine eigene Liga. Sicher nicht das beste Album, noch zuviel 70s und Disco aber ansatzweise doch hörbar was sie später ausmacht.
Unpopular opinion: Queen is very hit or miss. The singles are fabulous, the rest is just blah.
short enough to not get annoying
3.0 Well it was quite a bit more hard rock and proggy than I was expecting although I didn't really think the prog part of it went anywhere. Brian May sure noodles over everything. You cant argue the fact that Mercury's vocals arent iconic, but you certainly can say you are not a fan, which I am not.
them boys sure can play
5/10… Glam Rock / Britischer Rock
Freddie Mercury’s voice. Unmistakable. Didn’t know many of these songs but was an interesting first listen.
It was okay, but not something I'd seek out again. Surprising for a Queen album. "Killer Queen" was the only track that I recognized.
Pretty solid record, slightly more engaging than Queen II which I got a few months back but still overall a 3 star effort.
I just couldn't get into this as much as I expected I would. A shame. 3/5
Some rather screechy tracks, some rocker tracks, some almost lullaby tracks.
You know what you’re getting with Queen don’t you
It's Queen but they're just not there yet.
Always a Queen fan. Great rock. A lot of energy
I find the campy Queen songs to be the most interesting. So another up and down record.
I'm a fan of Queen, but if this album didn't have Killer Queen on it, there would be no reason to listen to it.
Classic Queen - unmistakable despite only including one song I already knew. I am sure there will be more.
3-4 st
Killer Queen. What a track. Lily of the Valley is also great - Freddie's voice is just so exceptional. I love Freddie - what a bright star he was. Have never been a huge Queen fan. But I appreciate them - and this really is the essence of what they are all about. How OTT. How brave. How cool.
Besides the first few songs this was quite forgettable. It’s Queen so it’s still good but not many of their best songs were on here.
This is definitely not a new favourite queen album for me but I quite enjoyed it as an exercise in spotting the earlier versions of things that they ran with in later hits as I’m not familiar with most of the tracks on this album. The piano-vocal relationship in parts of in the lap of the gods for example is so very bohemian rhapsody that I found it weirdly comforting to hear in a song that I hadn’t heard before. Yes I am making the astute observation that queen sounds like queen For a split second I thought the Spotify algorithm had done something funky and was playing I want it that way by the backstreet boys but alas that was just the start of tenement funster. My slight disappointment at it not in fact being I want it that way speaks to the fact that this album was not entirely for me (although tenement funster did win me over in the end) but was a net positive listening experience nonetheless, hence the solid 3 star.
I haven’t gone through Queens discography so this one might be cooler if I understood how this fits into their development. Besides Killer Queen I didn’t like any of the songs enough to come back to. But the songs do flow incredibly well. It just seems like a worse version of their next album Rating: 3.2
You can hear the Glam Rock style associated with Queen, but overall this was kind of a snooze of an album. Killer Queen is obviously the highlight of the whole album and beyond that most of the songs are just there. I’d listen again, but I think other albums from other bands are more deserving of attention at this point.
It was fine but not really the reason I’m seeking out Queen
Killer Queen is one of my long time favorite songs so loved that representation. The rest was pleasant and fun
Ionic and unique, but I'm still not sure I actually like Queen all that much?
stone cold crazy
Some great songs on this one! Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy are obvious, but even Tenement Funster and Flick of The Wrist are good compositions. However, the rest of the songs don’t quite add up to a great album. 3 strong stars
Lite rockigare än vad jag hade förväntat mig. Inte min stil, men helt okej ändå.
Album 491 of 1001 Queen - Sheer Heart Attack Rating : 3.75 / 5 I love Queen but this just isn't my favorite from them. My mind could change.
I had more fun with this than I thought I would. There was a lot going on and I enjoyed the drama and theatrics. But nothing great enough to make me come back for a second round.
Solid album. Not my favorite queen album, but certainly enjoyable.
Pretty good for Queen
Not their best. 1 excellent song and a few ok songs and some clunkers.
I only listened to Disc 1 from the remaster. It's alright. There's a few good songs I'd probably revisit, but for the most part, it's what I'd expect from a rock opera band. I especially liked Killer Queen, Now I'm Here, and Stone Cold Crazy. Bring Back That Leroy Brown felt out of place, but was fun to listen to. The vocals of In THe Lap Of The Gods are very nice and what you'd expect from Queen. Very Bohemian Rhapsody-esque. It's just not _really_ my style of music I tend to listen to, so it's not something I'd write home about.
6.5/10
I like Queen, for the harmonies, the guitar, and in general for their anthems. But after a couple of listens, Killer Queen is the only track that seems like a great _song_. The other tracks have good elements but don't hook me as much.
I've always run hot and cold on Queen, but really have only heard their hits, so interesting to hear a full album. Still not sure how I feel about them though. How to square the last three songs, for example: The Rag Time of "Leroy Brown," followed by the shambling proto-Jane's Addiction of "She Makes Me," followed by the groggy theatrically of "Lap Of God." It's interesting, I guess.
Back to being thirteen. Good in patches but some of it sounds a bit dated. Probably a lot better than what was available at the time though.
I do not feel Queen has aged well, but I still like it
3.2
Sheer Heart Attack and Killer Queen complement each other really well considering how they’re completely different Love the transition from Fotw into Lotv Stone Cold Crazy goes so hard. After that point though, it kinda drops off
All over the place. Some good some meandering. Hints of what was to become
Queen has some absolute hits, but I just don't think most of this album lives up to the hits, and I think the hits are Queen at their best writing really unique songs.
Early queen was weird. From absolute bangers to absolute garbage, they had it all
I mean people like Queen, it’s just solid music. But I’m not like a Queen head so it’s doesn’t make me go CRAZY PUMPED! I’m just like “oh cool this is nice!” 3.5 for that reason.
it's fine! i mean there's a couple truly great songs here but I never really thought of Queen as an Album band anyways. some of the songs on here are a bit forgettable, but there's still some good stuff in the filler. and the band is good enough to make up for some any less engaging material.
Killer Queen is an absolute banger. The rest of the album is significantly less interesting.
queen is ok
This sounds more like the Queen I know - the layered sounds, the depth and harmonies, the slow ballads and the driving pop-rock hits. Very enjoyable but stlil not SUPER strong... they have good songs but the albums don't feel super cohesive. For every Killer Queen and Stone Cold Crazy, there is a Tenement Funster and Leroy Brown. Not bad songs just not strong ones either.
It's Queen .. just a little bit more boring than expected.
ja nee killer queen leuk maar de rest hoefde van mij niet zo
3.5
Classic Queen
Some awesome riffs 🦔
Best Song: Stone Cold Crazy. Freddie Mercury needs this kind of intensity and vocal difficulty to really show off what he's capable of. Worst Song: She Makes Me. A soft, slow, uninteresting ballad. This might be the Eagles, for how it sounds. Overall: This list has really shown me that Queen's songwriting technique seems to be to wrap each track around some different theatrical gimmick. Occasionally, this experimental breadth means they land on something interesting and unique and it blows up into one of their mega hits, but it also means that their back-catalogue is full of annoying, forgettable tracks where the concepts doesn't hit.
It is so Queen. Weird, and dramatic, and theatrical, and multi-layered, and skillfully arranged and played, and yeah... weird. I said it. Mercury is at his vocal finest and the percussion and guitar work truly standout, especially in Stone Cold Crazy which I now realize perhaps the Crüe's Livewire found influence? Maybe. Anyway, Queen core. Rock on.
3.4/5 listened 2x
Enjoyed it, has Killer Queen on it, but still just mid kind of songs for me
The good songs are GOOD, but there are definitely also some fillers on here
Reading about their transition from prog rock to their more pop-focused classic sound, I really need to listen to Queen II. This is the footsteps of their temple. Their sound has been forged and changed through all of their struggle to put out this album. Their next album, A Night at the Opera, will send them directly to the top
Queen has done better. Love Killer Queen & Flick of the Wrist
Some true gems, as you would expect from Queen, and probably more coherent as an album than most of their albums. Still... More noteworthy for the gems than as an album as such.
Not bad
Well I've always been a Queen fan, I've never listened to this in full before. It's not a bad album, but not a great one. In context with their career it lays out all the elements for A Night at the Opera. The medley in the middle, the song by Roger about cars and the odd classic thrown in the mix and the reprise at the end. In the Lap of the Gods seems to be heavily inspired by Dark Side of The Moon and copies the formula of a song like The Great Gig in The Sky or Us and Them. The album all in all is a conceptual piece that tries to be a bit more like Pink Floyd than like Queen. But I think they knew exactly what they had. A couple of great songs, Killer Queen, Now I'm Here and Stone Cold Crazy, and a bunch of average filler that could only be half interesting if you put them together in the mix and flow of the album. The ordering of the album kind of makes it better but this is really not the one to be looking out for in their catalogue. It most certainly lays out a formula for something better.
High 3. When queen are rocking they're really rocking. But Freddie does love a ballad.
son bastante decepcionantes los albumes de queen si salis de los hits
These earlier Queen albums are not exactly up my alley, but they sure do rock. Except for Bring Back Leroy Brown. That song doesn’t rock.
Great 70s guitar on this album. Strong start, peaks with Killer Queen (best song) then fades. Can do without Bring Back That Leroy Brown. Comes in at (3.4*s)
This is a solid rock album with more hard guitar on it than expected. I like the variety of styles but could do without the silliness (ie: remove Leroy Brown). It's a fun listen and it definitely puts you in a mood. What's not to love about Mercury's operatic voice? He's an icon and Queen being on this list is indisputable.
