Reviews (page 8 of 8)
Tää oli aika huono levy mun makuuni. Liikaa jollotusta. En tykännyt.
This guy can really drone on. Who told blud he could sing or play guitar
Just not for me, had it on in the car, couldn’t focus on it. Dreary background music
Too sad
I like Leonard Cohen. But I do not like this. I'd never listened songs from a room before and I'm just glad that Cohens voice became listenable later in his career. The out of tune and out of time pan pipe and whistling duelling solo on the last track is one of the worst album endings I have ever heard. I actually started laughing. These songs should have stayed within the room where they were written.
That bloke you dont want to get stuck talking to at a.party has brought a guitar.
If I wanted to hear some white guy singing over rhythmic music I'd go to my local karaoke night
I prefer actual singing in my songs and actual music in my tunes. I'm sure the lyrics are good and all if you haven't already tied of terminal boredom from this guy's mumbling.
I think the author is fucking with me now. He can’t possibly think we need to listen to more Leonard Cohen? Is this album number 4? 5? Shit all sounds the same! No need to punish us… or is it just me? Maybe I’m being singled out by the algorithm for my scathing reviews and low ratings? That must be it! The rest of you get 1 album, while I get the entire fucking Cohen catalog! I Blame Obama!
Not my jam
Jedinica iz principa. // Bila bi jedinica jer postanem suicidalna čim moram slušati cohena.
Cohen's off-key singing is the cherry on the top of this rancid cake of secondhand Dylan-isms, "MacArthur Park"-style earnestness and hook-free rambling.
не могу оценить, не слушал и не очень хочу
Didn’t get on with this at all
Meh
I'm sorry, but Leonard Cohen makes me want to vomit. He has this certain "I don't know" quality in his voice that's incredibly irritating. I won't listen to him voluntarily anymore. He may well have that special artistic, avant-garde quality about him, but not for me. Cohen has always been an artist whose popularity (in some circles) I've never understood and, frankly, don't want to understand. That voice—get rid of it.
I appreciate some of his music, but I was kind of bored by this album.
I can't get through the 1st song. I feel like I give up too soon on some of these albums but then I remember I don't have to torture myself for the sake of this project.
Yeah I really don't get why people like Leonard Cohen. His voice is so droning and there's no melody to it. The only okay song on this was the Partisan, and that's because of the woman's voice in the chorus. I can't believe so many of his albums are on this list. I'm not looking forward to the others.
Bad music for sad people.
Still no
There are way too many Cohen albums on this list and they are all awful. I can't fathom how this is remotely likeable. If I were in a central american prison, this is what they would play on a loop to drive me insane.
Every song had the same formula. None particularly good.
If I were a fish & you caught me…maybe it’s the thought of not BEING SO ALONE…& when I’m back in Chicago I feel iiiiiit!…and the branch on the tree and the tree in bog…bewitched, bothered & bewildered aaaaammmmm iiiiiiii Songs from The Room - 5 stars. Songs from A Room - “this isn’t fudge…ah man this is shit!”
My wife asked if I’d rather hear this or Hobo Johnson. I had to think about it
No me gusta y he tratado que me guste. No soporto su tono y como canta arrastrando las frases
Bland singer/songwriter.
Old man sings old shit garbage you gotta love I not
No. Fell asleep again.
I never understood Leonard Cohen. Like in Bob Dylan's case, all the covers to his songs were better.
Jao on mi je baš dosadan za riknuti, ono dosadno u rangu Casha. 1/5, 1/10
nah
If Bob Dylan was a musician It was insanely boring, You Know Who I Am was fine
It's so BORING and SAMEY and honestly sounds so similar to his first album that he almost plagiarized himself.
Too slow. No beat drop. No faster pace. Nun. Every song sounds like something I would only listen to when Im in a rocking chair. But he was spitting some real shit so 2/10
I went to the dentist He took my teeth and said Counting sheep's for wise men Go home and rest your head
Cack. Just utter cack
he's not my thing 1.5/5
No thank you If this was “1001 stories you must read before you die” then maybe it would qualify for this list However… it’s not
The first song of the album is one of the worst I have ever heard. The rest are only a little better. I'm sure the lyrics are brilliant but the music is not. Sorry to the city of Montréal, the big Leonard Cohen mural is still cool.
You know that fart noise you can make with your tongue and lips and teeth, you know that thing? Yep. That's where I'm at.
So boring
Depressing as fuck
No point
Dullsville
Boooooooo
Good to great songs, awful voice. Not a fan.
I’m too tired to listen to this, it’s just going to make me fall asleep at my desk.
I don't like Leonard Cohen as much as I thought I did going into this. Everyone talks about is songwriting but I'll take Dylan or Lennon/McCartney or Paul Simon or Carole King over him any day. The Butcher is one of the better songs on the album but that's not much of a hurdle to clear. Tonight Will Be Fine is the best song to close out a not so good album.
0’5
Listening to this is like watching paint dry. Dull.
I don’t know what fresh hell brought this album to me, but it was a terrible combination of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. I couldn’t listen to it. I understand he’s a legendary songwriter but let someone else perform them.
Not for me, a slog
Dire.
Not all poets can be musicians. This album contains good poetry but Cohen has no vocal talent, and the melodies all sound really basic. I find it difficult to focus on the lyrics because the musical aspects are so offputting. A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes has something that is barely listenable going on but then he feels the need to add some weird twang thing in the background. Like fuck off and just write lyrics dude.
Hmmm, I generally like this type of music. But I can't get past the fact that Leonard Cohen can't sing. This sounds like what it might sound like if I sang these songs. The songwriting is interesting, but I can't take the lack of voice. Pretty unenjoyable overall.

Uuurgh!
Quite a tentative vocal performance from Cohen who really isn't my cup of tea.
Not a happy album.
My first time. Not what I thought. Slow and uninspiring,
I don't think melancholy Leonard would appreciate all the enthusiasm he's getting here
I’ve tried to like Leonard Cohen, but every time I hear him, my whole being just goes “uuuhhhggghhh.”
AWFUL
This is as bad as the first one we listened to.
Who listens to this crap?
I can’t do it… I can’t sit through another album of his droning on and on instead of singing. I hit play and within 5 seconds hit stop. There are too many of his albums on this list.
Utter nonsense
I really didn't care for this. I got bored halfway through the first song.
It was dull.
It all sounded the same and this is the 3rd!! Leonard Cohen album. I’m not a fan of his early works. 1001 album worthy: no - 69/129
It certainly was a bold stylistic choice to use the terrible and goofy ass sounding jaw harp all over this album. Like why? Just why? The songs are alright but the songs with the jaw harp are almost unlistenable.
I’ve had enough of Leonard Cohen.
Wow this was a chore to get through.
Leonard Cohen has truly managed a hat trick with this one - bad songwriting, bad singing, and bad instrumentals. Usually, at least one of those has to be okay to even get a record deal!
I just don't like Leonard Cohen. Whatever it is, he doesn't have it. At least this one isn't over-produced, over-arranged lounge music, but for an allegedly simple and austere record, there's an awful lot of dumb arrangement ideas. As for the writing, I can tell he thinks it's good.
Not going to lie, I was happy for this to be over. Uneventful and not something I’d listen to again
Oh my god, come on. More Leonard Cohen?!?? I think his entire discography is on this list. I hate him. He cannot sing and that's literally all there is in his songs. 1/10 (0.5/5)
Not very good
Nah bruh
I do not like this. Help.
I think I'm supposed to like it, but I didn't.
This guy cannot sing. Should have stayed in his room and locked the door so he can sing his depressing music to himself. 1.5/5
Enough Leonard Cohen please this dude sucks. I can't imagine anyone ever wanting to listen to this trash. How he ever made a living at making records I'll never know. And you probably caught me on a good day LOL. 😜 Oh, and if I could give this asshat a negative rating I certainly would.
Nasally, slow, and boring.
Please stop making me listen to this man.
Ill never try or tell anyone to listen to this.
I promised to re-evaluate Coen's earlier work after I enjoyed You Want it Darker so much, but it honestly does nothing for me. I know his lyrics might be very poetic, but I can't grasp them properly when they are packaged within such terrible music. His singing is almost offensively bad, and the music is uninteresting and uninspired. I feel a bit hypocritical now because I do enjoy Bob Dylan's 60s output, but the difference there is that Dylan knew how to write an interesting melody and was a decent guitarist too. This album is significantly worse than Coen's debut, and doesn't belong on this list IMO.
Hated this so much I searched the list to see how much more LC we have to endure. Two down, two to go.
I mean... can't sing, raspy old man songs....
Meh man. Meh.
NO MORE COHEN PLLLLEEEEEEEAAASSSSEE!!
Horrible. Really don't get the hype for Cohen
This is a concept album where the artist jokingly has decided to unnecessarily shoehorn the jaw harp he won at the county fair into every track to hide the fact he's a terrible singer and see if anyone would notice. This was a huge miss for me. Wildly unenjoyable. To plagiarize from the title of a Gin Blossoms album: A New Miserable Experience
sad and boring
Still don't get the garbage that is Leonard Cohen. I feel like he's taking me on a Tolkien adventure with stream of thought consciousness lyrics and a fifth grade level recorder.
60’
not my style of music
Hard one for me. I’d say it’s true overall, and the one weakness of the challenge, but Cohen, Dylan and a few others are especially hard to “rate” in the spirit of this because how do you rate such albums after one or two listens that are so lyrically dense, more in the style of poetry? 🤷🏽🤷🏽🤷🏽 Cohen almost demands dedicated time to dig into the stories he’s singing about, often tied to biblical and historical stories for their emotional context, as he connects that to modern ideas that make you think/feel. It’s a “one” based more on my limitations. People I know that are into Cohen often say that’s the starting point with him and with dedicated listening over time, he becomes a favorite. I could see that. I ain’t there yet.
I don’t know what it is but Leonard Cohen just makes me cringe. This record didn’t change that.
This would be good music for a child's funeral. 1/5
Couldn't get into it. 1/5
not for me. boring. sad. and monotone
I'll never get used to Cohen's style and repetitive wailing.
Very uninteresting
Was he was forced to write it on the spot as he recorded? It almost sounds like it's supposed to be bad. So many disjointed lyrics, it's like one of those Rick and Morty bits on intergalactic cable.
Tandon Scale Rating: 1 Standouts: Seems So Long Ago, Nancy, Old Revolution Foot Notes: 1 this man loves a spring sample 2 Leonard seemed like a sad dude Would I Listen Again: probably no Album Cover Rating: (1-5) 1 Album Name Rating: (1-5) 2
The music was very simple, and I can see why people like it. It just wasn’t for me. It reminded me of Johnny Cash (I don’t like Johnny Cash) but worse.
I wanted to like this album, I didn’t.
Never really liked Leonard Cohen, but listened to the whole album today…and…still don’t like his music.
Not my cup of tea
Not my thing at all. Quite a depressing listen.
Dead boring.
Yeah, I just don’t love Leonard Cohen. Sorry.
Not my thing. Weird monotone folk.
LC just doesn't do it for me. Every song is the same...not sure why he (and Tom Waits) is someone I just can't get into. 1.5/5
this album filled me with inexplicable rage, my productivity tanked, couldn't finish it. I'm sure this music means something to a very specific type of person but it's not me. why don't your lyrics rhyme?? do better Leonard
I'm trying to imagine living in 1969 or maybe 1970 and going to the record store, like actually going out and going to Tower records or Bleeker Bobs. And when I get there, the thing that I'm going to buy is this. A Leonard Cohen album. And not just any Leonard Cohen album, but one that is so dull and terrible that its impossible to actually listen to it. Why would this happen? Who would do this? 1/5
This is by far the worst of Leonard Cohen's albums, not that im a fan of his work, but i do know he produced ither stuff that was better, but still nothing i would be into. There are some glimmers of contempory folk that appear in the album, but I find his monotone narration with many of them hard to listen too, and they are essentially very same tracks.
Cohen was an artist who could paint vivid images through spoken word. However, this album was slow and depressing. I couldn’t wait for it to be over…
The lyrics are good but my *god* these songs are fucking bland and he cannot sing.
Classic Folk music, not very appealing to me
Another dreary album. If someone tried to come out with this, nowadays, I don’t think it would be looked at twice. Out of tune singing, no melody, basically reading to guitar. Another artist that I can appreciate in some way, but do they really deserve multiple albums on this list? I think not. Listen again: no Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song: no
Cannot deal. I really don't get the appeal of Leonard Cohen. Any other kind of arrangement to his lyrics, and even different artist singing them might make his song writing more palatable, but as it is, I would never again, willingly, listen to this album. Best: The Partisan Worst: Seems So Long Ago, Nancy
This has no musical worth whatsoever. This guy obviously is a 'talented' poet? possibly author, given his imagery and storytelling.
Hard to bear a whole album of whining
Incredibly tedious boring and uninteresting. Longest 35 minutes of my life. If it wasn't for the Watchmen movie no one would know who Leonard Cohen is.
Yet another album by Cohen, I was starting to think that its me, that I just don't get him, but then again I counted 41 one-star ratings, so maybe its not just me. This album was morbidly morose, maudlin and a real chore to listen to. Stick to writing poetry Lenny.
I can't find it within myself to appreciate this album.
Not a fan of this one. Took some time to get through it.
Full , boring
Meh, not a fan.
I fucking hate this album so much
Songs From a Room that should have left there. Deur dicht, op slot en nooit meer openmaken.
FUCK! Why his this SOB on the list so much. Before I even listen guess review - Terrible After I listened. - God this sucked.
1/5. I’m sure these songs would have been more powerful back in the day but I do not want to listen to this more than I have to.
Dog shit
Folk music just isn't for me, I'm afraid. He sounds like he's bored while singing the songs. No favorite tracks.
Awful
Fuck, another late 60s album. Another album from one of "THESE GUYS" - Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, etc etc. Just keep on punishing me why don't ya. Cunt can't sing and this is just pathetic. 1/5.
I've been aware of Leanord Cohen for a long time because I've always liked "I'm Your Man" and "Hallelujah", but this album to me is extremely bland and boring. Vocals dont always have to rhyme in good music but I feel like he's just droning on and on. I know that probably sounds ridiculous talking about an extremely famous artist like this but this album is something I'd never ever come back to, barely made it through. Favorite Song:A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes
Ich kann das nicht hören und ich kann nichts damit anfangen.
Boring as fuck
Story of Isaac sucks ass. I really don't see the appeal of this guy. He is continually flat, has the intonation of a dead goldfish and is just not interesting to listen to. Tonight Will Be Fine adds insult to injury with a goddamn recorder and whistle solo.
Awful. I can't stand his voice - it's just boring boring boring to listen to. The lyrics might be good but his voice grates too much for me to try and appreciate whatever he is droning on about. My mother in law will be disappointed as he is (was) one of her favorite singers. Sorry mum!
No, sorry, I'm not even going to listen to this. I've heard enough already.
Boring!
This one is a pretty hard listen. The production is pretty bare, the songs are simple. The vocals are pitchy but emotional. I get the feel of the album, and honestly would have like it a lot more if it wasn't for that stupid jaw harp through the whole damn album. If you're not familiar with a jaw harp, also called a jew harp for some reason, you fucking are now after getting through this album. Everyone who actually listened to this knows what I'm talking about too. It's the weird thing that sounds like the spring door stop in the bathroom that for some reason gets a 35 minute solo over the course of this record.
oh my god. i felt like this album was genuinely five years long. it sounds like he grabbed a bunch of sentences from his behind and scrambled them together then added a strum of a guitar. no offence :) but he is literally awful
Songs From A Panic Room. ... Ok I was gonna try - honest - but literally from the first note ("note") I hated this. His terrible up-front vocals drenched in reverb upon more reverb over slow slice-your-wrist songs are not my bag. Which begs the question: whose bag are they? Yeah yeah poetry genius whatever. David Lee Roth wasn't a poet (or was he...) and/but used humour dammit and had Eddie by his side making some entertainment. This is not entertaining. I've had two LC albums thus far. I can think of ... a hundred? 200? artists I *hate*...that I'd rather have two albums from. Easily. Bring me Liz Phair's Greatest Monotone Middle School Naughty Words! Bring me Bon Jovi's Worst Ballads! Sigh. (...actually don't...) ...now i'm scared. Are there more Leonards?? Please say there won't be any more. [brain: ...say something nice... say something nice...] He's Canadian! [brain: invalid. ...where are the Rheostatics?...there should be at least 4 of their albums... try again; Canadian alone is worthless] Um, he's like a slightly less smacked out Lou Reed? [brain: ...what is wrong with you ... this is your base-level bar? we cannot stand anything about Lou Reed, remember? that's not a bar - that's a concrete floor. Again.] well. um...it's only 36 minutes so it'll be over soon.... [brain: ...GAK...send help - there is no way this is only 36 minutes it feels like days...brain dying...] 1/10 1 burned out dim star.
The first song was good, but the rest of it was so boring.
You are shitting me. Exceptionally dull backing music and head up his arse poet talking over the top. Dreadful.
Not a fan
The legend. Lennon said to Dylan, he doesn't listen to the lyrics, just the energy of the song. That's me too.
Ik vind rustige muziek niet erg, maar dit is echt slaapverwekkend. Zzzzzz..... *
hell fucking no opa ich hör dir nicht ne stunde beim rumheulen zu :mittelfinger:
Saved Prior: None Off Rip: A Bunch of Lonesome Heroes, The Partisan Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Nothing more than a wannabe Bob Dylan on this album. I don't care if the lyrics are beautiful, there has to be at least something musically accomplished to merit putting them on a musical best-of list, and this album is missing it. Songwriter's hall of fame, sure. But we did not NEED to hear yet another album from this guy just because he writes nice poetry. Just print me a booklet of his lyrics and be on your way. 1.5 that I'm gonna round down to make a point about this kind of music. Am I overreacting? Probably. But I am banging my head against the wall listening to these kind of albums over and over again spread about this list and this was the straw that broke the camel's back.
Sorry, but he didn't do it for me.
1.25
Not a fan of Leonard Cohen
Brutal
I can’t finish it. Got 3 tracks in and holy shit it’s boring. Think if Bob Dylan was more verbose and less talented.
Wasn’t he a nirvana lyric?
I could be forgiven for thinking I’ve already listened to this album as a result of rating such a high percentage of folk/acoustic lp’s since the start of my musical ranking journey. My point being, this genre all sounds the the same to me. I mean what is there sonically that differs Cohen to Dylan to Neil Young for example, except for alternate decades? Nothing differentiates their sound enough to keep me interested when I wasn’t interested to begin with. 1 Star!
Folk is just so very boring. Senseless talking over guitars 1/10.
Struggled with this one.
RIP. Just not a fan
super slow and uninteresting
Meh
