Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Always heard artists I like cite T. Rex as an influence so I was excited to listen to this album. Honestly I thought it was going to be heavier. There are some moments where it gets heavy but I was expecting more. The song quality is also a bit of mix bag with the lead single "Bang a Gong" doing some heavy lifting. The stuff that is good is good enough to keep it at a 3/5. I just wish the quality was more consistent
Had never heard of T-Rex until the Power Station cover of 'Get It On' in 1985. I was only 15. Had heard of Slade, Gary Glitter, and other glam rock artists of that era, but wasn't until relatively recently that I realized what a huge part of that scene T-Rex were. Many songs I've heard that I didn't even know where theirs.
I really love the sound of T.Rex, the psychedelic, otherworldly feel comes through so strong for me. I don’t know if any song realllly blew me away, but I did like them all and especially Life’s a Gas. I want to listen to more T. Rex because there is something about them that inherently draws me in.
It’s already slipping from memory
Good
Good album. I liked the bluesy parts. Nothing revolutionary, but a pretty good listen. 3/5 Might listen again
I had higher hopes for the album tracks, but it warrants another listen.
Get It On is such a banger, and the rest of the songs on this album are not as great. I think this album is still pretty good overall, but it’s too simplistic and lacks some “wow” factor as well as variety. Enjoyable listen, but outside of Get It On, nothing exceptional. 7/10
This will be interesting I’ve read so much more about Marc Bolan than listened as he was so many people’s hero. His vocals are instantly recognisable, it’s actually very INXS. I’m surprised how early this is, 1971 I would have guessed later, so sounds ahead of its time. This is a ‘landmark album in glam rock’. I didn’t realize how popular they were, I thought they were more cult. This is very different to how I thought it would sound, I thought it would be wild rock. For me it’s underwhelming but I’m not seeing the glam rock outfits & the bisexual outrageousness at the time. It is unique I cannot pigeonhole it which is a good sign, it’s probably a grower. The final track rip-off is insane like from another future album another time.
Yeah - this was actually cool. Not a glam fan at all but loved the guitar work on this, and the songs are good too.
it was good but carried by bang a gong
nice chill vibe, a little funky. nothing particularly memorable though, but some great background music.
Better than the other T Rex album I heard earlier this week, but still don’t feel like it has anything that really blew me away.
Thought this was pretty good, maybe didn't rock quite as hard as I expected for what I knew of T. Rex's influence on the glam scene, but I do really like Marc Bolan's voice and can see how this influenced a lot of more indie-minded bands in years to come (like I definitely heard some MGMT in their more psychedelic moments here as an example). Get it On is a fantastic song, some unique instrumentation choices throughout (bongos?). Overall didn't leap out to me as a masterpiece but found plenty to enjoy.
No. 320/1001 Mambo Sun 3/5 Cosmic Dancer 4/5 Jeepster 3/5 Monolith 3/5 Lean Woman Blues 3/5 Get It On 4/5 Planet Queen 3/5 Girl 4/5 The Motivator 3/5 Life's a Gas 4/5 Rip Off 3/5 Average: 3,36 Pretty good rock album. Get It On is definitely the highlight.
First listen
A very important Glam album historically, however the glam movement doesn't really do it for me. It all just sounds a bit samey. This is also the case for this album, it doesn't really go anywhere in my opinion. The hit song 'Get it On' is by far the best song on the album and the only reason it does not score 2/5. Final score 3/5
I understand how important this album was and how many artists it would go on to influence, but honestly I found this to be quite disappointing in the sense that this thing feels a bit dull. Get It On is obviously a top tier tune but I found myself waiting for that song to appear in the queue. Lean Woman Blues was a great song too, but everything else pales in comparison to Get It On to the point it makes this album a bit bland. I'm not denying the talent of T.Rex or saying this album is /bad/ per se, but my expectations of this record after listening for the first time were not met. Once you get past Get It On the album just turns into a boring mess. I honestly can't see myself coming back to this thing in a rush, rather I'll take a few songs I enjoyed off this thing and throw them into my playlists. But as an entire record, it was just not there for me.
Been stalling on this review specifically because I really struggled to find anything to say about it. It was just okay, inoffensive but uninspiring.
Just OK for me
I liked it! I mean it wasn’t anything special for me, but it was good.
I enjoyed listening to the album a couple times! I wasn’t a fan on how low volume the vocals were recorded at.
I thought that I would like this album more. As it turns out, only Get It On really stood out; the rest was quite uninteresting. There's the typical T. Rex sound and all, but the album as a whole didn't do anything for me. And I usually like Glam Rock- to some extent.
Eh? Cool? I guess?
I used to love Marc Bolan - especially given his tragic early death just around the corner from my Gran's house. Summer is heaven in 77 and all that. Works best as a greatest hits as he had some banging singles but quality threshold dips across the albums
Classic but not my vibe
Catchy, with big fat guitar. I have always thought T. Rex is a bit over praised based on what people feel Marc would have done if he had lived. That said, "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" is a top tier song, and "Jeepster" is memorable. The rest is fine, but leave no lasting impression. I think this is a you had to be there record.
É um bom álbum. Algumas músicas são clássicas da banda, porém... ainda faltava um peso maior. QoA Adonis New.
Pretty good middle of the road rock album
Not bad but overrated.
With a cover art like that, I expected this album to be a hard rock album. Instead, I got a glam / blues rock project. Even though I prefer how it actually sounds to what I was expecting, I have to say that the record didn't do anything for me. When compared to the big names of the glam rock genre, like David Bowie or Lou Reed, I think T. Rex doesn't offer anything as fancy as the others do, and decides to focus way more on the blues part, and it turns out I'm not as big fan of blues rock. Maybe an unfair comparition, but when they share some common sounds, I believe it is valid to do so. What I can positively say about it is that the tones of the guitar sound very good and the singing is smooth and pleasent. So that's about it, just a decent album. Also, add me to the list of people who knew about the song 'Get it On' but didn't knew its name and artist.
Ein großer Hit an dem sich der ganze Sound orientiert.
What if “The Doors”, but actually good?
Some goodens on there but the songs all sound the same
Not bad, like listening to proto-Ty Segall. Gets a bit samey though.
I expected not to like this but I recognised pretty much all of the songs and enjoyed it more than I should.
This was good. I’d heard it before a long time ago and didn’t like it then but now I do. A solid album.
I saw this guy back in the day. He came onstage a la Spinal Tap in a star-shaped case that slowly raised to vertical, but with some jerks and shudders. The show was really loud. at least two days of ringing ears, and I was in the balcony. I still like Jeepster and Get It On but the rest of this is really thin. I know that his hits aren't exactly Cole Porter either. I like Flo and Eddie's contributions. Thinking about listening to it is better than actually listening to it,
++*: Lean Woman Blues ++: Cosmic Dancer, Jeepster, Get It On, Planet Queen, The Motivator, Rip Off +: Mambo Sun, Monolith, Life's a Gas +-: Girl 7,7/10
As much as I like Get It On, the rest of the album wasn't that interesting if I am gonna be honest. It was nice though.
Inget speciellt alls, förutom att det är typ början på Glam Rock? Så historiskt viktig ja, men som album är den en tvåa. Bowie tog det här och gjorde det bättre på Ziggy Stardust
priem
Beatles Direct to mixing console guitar tone is really cool to me. Turns out I knew a song or two, will probably grow on me a little more over time. Light 6/10
I had hear Bang a Gong before and I enjoyed Life's a Gas. This is my second T.Rex album and before listening to these albums I had never heard of the band.
Yeah, it's okay. Good energy, a bit dated. Well, after all, it is 50 years old.
A wonderful glam stomp of an album.
Glam rock, not bad Bang a gong
Well you’re dirty and sweet, with a hub cap diamond stud halo, and the teeth of the Hydra upon you. Such a silly wonderful thing you are.
One of the OG One Hit Wonders. All in all not bad really, especially in light of some of the absolute dog shit that is on this list.
Encore t-rex
Jeepster is a favorite. Who doesn't love to Bang a Gong?!
Pretty decent Get it on is great Was hoping children of the revolution was on this
Meh
It's a fine rock record, with "get it on" being the obvious standout and several tracks serving for good glan rock templates, but little stands out otherwise, and the record doesn't accel at producing glam rock hits.
Ok background vibes. Not really my vibe - this seems some early indie rock, which is nice
Catchy and interesting but after a time it does feel like eating a never ending bowl of something.
Justin used to play this album at Soma like every other day
I went in knowing very little about T. Rex, but ended up enjoying this more than expected. The no-frills, groove-driven feel really works. It’s not something I’d put on all the time, but it definitely has its moments. Favourite tracks: Mambo Sun, Cosmic Dancer, Get It On, The Motivator, and Rip Off.
It was fine. I like Marc Bolan’s voice. I knew Bang a Gong. I liked the song Cosmic Dancer.
"Bang A Gong" is obviously a good song, the rest of this is a bit uninspired. Nothing hits as hard, and while the guitar playing is good it gets a bit repetitive. It's not quite funk enough and the singer/songwriter model doesn't work as well when it's a "classic rock" style band performing everything. I liked it, but it's nothing special.
Standouts Get it On Planet Queen Rip Off
Some bangers but also a lot of meandering filler. I can see how it would’ve been more meaningful in its moment, with Ziggy etc. but I’d rather listen to early Bowie/Ronson
Really easy, sounds cool. Really good
Easy listening glam rock. Jeepster and Get it On nostalgic favourites. A whole album let alone a double one is a bit much though
Their sound is just so familiar, but I can’t help thinking there’s a reason I’ve never bothered to listen to an album before. They have some good songs but I get the feeling I only really need to know the hits. Having said that, I enjoyed this album, it has a warm comforting fuzz to it and probably merits its place on the list. I also felt like this album would have been released much later than 1971, which is perhaps a sign of it being ahead of its time. I’d happily listen again, although I don’t know when.
Good. Classic
The music is fantastic and the lyrics are so inane that at times they sound like Flight of the Conchords. Before this I had only heard "Bang a Gong" but it conveys the message pretty well.
Just fun glam rock
Decently fun listen early on. T Rex seems super relaxed and happy to be performing. Got a little tiresome and samey towards the end of the record. "Cosmic Dancer" is probably my pick from the album - it's nice and dreamy, easy-going, etc. The little 'aaaaa-aaa-aaaa' background vocal motif totally reminds me of the vocal motif on Dance Yrself Clean & Home by LCD Soundsystem. I was unaware that this is who made "Get It On". Probably on the less favorabale side of all the classic rock radio songs I heard as a kid, but I get why it became popular. 3/5 for some goodd rocknroll. Also (to make a second bloghouse connection) this SURELY mustve been the inspiration for Justice's original Cross album artwork. Surely.
6/10
Decent enough album, although not one I’d probably listen to again. I’d just listen to the odd songs I like on a playlist
Like it more than I thought I would, even with some repetitive melodies
Not bad
Bang a gong, get it on
3.5, pretty decent, clearly a big influence on Ty Segall, will return to some of these songs
7/10
Pues me parece un aburrimiento el disco. Y además suena horrible. No tiene agudos y parece que suena a través de una almohada. El tipo no canta y las canciones suenan débiles salvo la célebre "get it on". Está bien, pero no es para tanto.
war cool aber werde es vermutlich nie wieder hören
This is fine and all but the campiness hasn't aged amazing. Also Bolan singing with an American drawl then pronouncing a long soft 'a' in words like "dance" just takes me out of it.
A little too quiet for my liking, but other than thst not bad. I don't love music like this. The only song I recognized on here is bang a gong. Nice, upbeat album. The cover is cool. 5/10
nav īpaši daudz ko teikt patika "Mambo Sun", "Get it On" un "Cosmic Dancer"
Pretty good - enjoyable and consistent.
My feelings on T Rex have waxed and waned over the years. I used to love them, now I appreciate them and what they did at their time to bring glam to the forefront. This may be their best album and has some great grooves, its fun, short catchy tunes and glam pop thu and thru. I also appreciate the nods to blues and rock roots. It's fun and easy to listen to.
I was surprised to learn that T. Rex were so big back in the 70s. « Get It On » is the only song that sounded familiar to me – probably something I had heard a few times in movies or tv shows, but never bothered checking out. It does sound fairly modern for its time (the last song especially), although I expected something a bit more dynamic from an album titled « Electric Warrior ». A nice album overall, quite pleasant to listen while drinking my gallon of morning coffee. I'll try to give it another listen in a few days because I feel I might have missed some of its complexities. 6/10
I liked the vibe of the record and the direction they take with their music. It's groovy, innovative and sounds good. The singing is pretty good, gentle but with attitude. The instrumentals are nice, but my favourite part of it were the effects and innovations. The string sections are a great addition, and the reversed sounds and weird effects work superb. My favourite songs were "Mambo Sun", "Monolith", "Get It On" and "The Motivator". Also, the cover art is excellent.
Great 70s pop rock with a couple of good hits
Good
I certainly understand this album’s importance within the glam rock scene and it’s influence on a bunch of major artists but… I just find it to be too repetitive, and lacking any real bite. I definitely think it is a good record and understand it’s inclusion on the list but it’s just not really my thing. Standout tracks: “Planet Queen” - “Girl” - “Life’s A Gas”
Good
holy moly this is where that one song comes from! also, decent album, 3.5 out of 5 for me for sure
If I'm being honest, this was not my cup of tea. My overall rating for this would be 6.6/10. I'm not sure if it was the vocals of the songs or something, but I could not get into this album. It's not like I don't enjoy rock or anything (I do enjoy rock), but for some reason, this album missed the mark. I did enjoy the lyrical writing on this, though, so that did kind of save the album for me personally. I don't really see myself coming back to this album anytime soon, unfortunately.
I listened to the original release (11 tracks). This is an album I’ve always wanted to hear (well, that’s done!). T Rex was more popular in the UK than they were here, although they were big for a couple years (around 1971-73). By the time Bolan died their popularity here had faded, but the radio continues to play Bang A Gong quite often. There are a few good tracks on this album but not enough good stuff to warrant four stars.
Pretty cool sound, and the one big radio hit is fun, but not really anything to write home about IMO.
It was...goodish. Close to a 4 for me
Not a fan. The vocal was a bit on the weak side. Grooves are ok. The arrangement is actually good too. But the album is like a bottle of flat coke. Pump it up man.
I enjoyed 'Get It On', and everything else was just alright. When i read the description of this album, i was really prepping for a more "glam-rock" sound, but i guess this is the very, very early version of that sound that tore through the 80's. My respect to T. Rex, but overall this album didn't do much for me. it was just a fine listen, in my opinion.
Had some really fun grooves and was a lot of fun for some Saturday afternoon jams. I'm not sure what the rest of his discography looks like past this one, but I'm interested to see what else I might know of his besides Get It On.
This album was pretty boring. It was shaping up to be a two, but "Bang a Gong" saved it. Dope song, boring album.
One of those bands I've heard of, but never checked out. It turned out I know Get It On. I think that has been in countless commercials. Decent album.
Enjoyable. Three stars.
je pensais que j'aurais plus aimé, mais sur certaines chansons j'aime pas trop sa voix et c'est un peu tjrs pareil
Get it on is good. The rest just average
It was fine. Nothing that got me excited. But it had Bang a Gong. 5/10
Sooooo boring. I hate glam rock. How do people like this
69/100 pretty good tbf, fell off towards the middle but picked back up right at the end, i prefer the 2003 reissue, especially with the there was a time/ raw ramp / electric boogie mashup b side that would be my fav track on this if it was the 2003 edition top three tracks: 1. rip off 2. mambo sun 3. cosmic dancer worst tracks: 1. get it on 2. planet queen 3. girl
Pretty good with a few really catchy songs. But there’s much better rock music from this time period.
Bang a gong, then move along. Nothing else really stuck out... not terrible, though.
I didn't really get into it. But that could just be me being burned out on 70's rock.
Super short album. Decent
I was promised big things by the first two songs in this album but sadly it didn’t live up Life’s a gas slaps tho
First half very strong. Falls off a bit in the latter half. 3.5 stars
Get it on is a great track. Most of their music has the exact same sound. Meh
Great cover, like a rock n' roll angel. I tried real hard to like T.Rex but it just never materialized. The structure was there, the bones were good, but the payoff never came for me. I dig the groove he's in, but the songs are weak. This is my first time going from top to bottom on "Electric Warrior". I like the vibe from the outset and "Mambo Sun" was a pleasant song to revisit. "Cosmic Dancer" could have easily been a Bowie song, it's nice. There was some sparkle on tunes like "The Motivator", "Jeepster" and "Monolith" but they all missed the mark to be considered a hit song or a radio favorite. I was glad I gave it a listen, but I don't see the longevity, the hit songs beyond the obvious "Bang A Gong", influence is there but is it enough to make it on the T1001? I say no. Solid 3 stars though.
Sounds like Beatles + Bowie + White Stripes. Some redundancy in sound.
Had some moments, there's a hit or two here, but didn't stick with me. Banging a gong sounds fun though.
I listened to this a few days ago and honestly I don't remember much from it. I think it was worth a 3 out of 5.
Just Fun. Bang a gong is just random though
Cool sound. A lot of the same
British
I could see how this is legendary!
A lot more casual than I expected, almost feeling lo-fi-ish at times. A hazy, folky, boogie pop rock album, I guess grouped with glam at the time. Fairly simple songs, catchy melodies, and creamy guitar licks. But it’s just low key and pretty chill, even for the stompier tracks. An enjoyable listen but nothing that stands out as spectacular. Though I can now see how this is a huge influence on Ty Segall, an artist I dig very much.
It's fine i guess, but to me it feels like another album where they had one song so they recorded it twelve different ways. But then again, maybe that's just what it sounds like to my untrained ear because I'm really not one for glam/ psychedelic stuff. It wasn't a bad listen, just a meh one for me
Get It On gets it a 3 Would be a 2 without it
Boogaloo
I immediately like this. This album was great, just great! Not at all what I was expecting.
I wish I liked this album more because I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Outside of the two songs I already heard from it, there weren’t any others that I liked. It’s definitely a competently made and produced record, but just not my cup of tea.
Good rock album
Having never heard of T. Rex before this, I was pleasantly surprised how much I boogied to this album on my commute. Favorites: Raw Ramp for reminding me of the days I was a White Tramp, Bang a Gong (Get it On) for the name and Sax, Woodland Rock for the feeling like I was watching the comic relief of a county fair scene in a horror movie. Bonus: Ian McDonald on the sax was *chef's kiss*. Appreciate the introduction to him. Extra points for the interview and his desire to get America and children listening to this genre. I don't know if it worked out then but I'm a fan so I hope he's getting a posthumous hard-on about it. 7/10, would listen again.
Started off strong with the first track, but falls off on track 2 & 4. I really do enjoy chameleon and sly but it’s not enough to give this album more than a 3-star rating.
A fun listen with nice riffs and the well-known hit "Get It On". Overall maybe a bit dated?! Strong three stars. 3,5
Easily the best T. Rex album on this list, but still it's very insufferable to listen to. Glam rock is just not it, not in the 21st century. I look forward to the future, where I won't be exposed to Felds music ever again.
pretty cool, laid back
I could have sworn they were hair metal! Pretty enjoyable and surprisingly modern sounding!
you know, i don't really find the bangers here that bangin'. i like the folkier boogie stuff more. good grooves in there deserves to be one of the 1001? this is one of the most important glam rock albums so i'm going with yes
This was my second T Rex album on here and I feel similar to this one as I did to the last. I like the guy’s voice. I think it’s unique and has a cool sound. I feel that way about the songs too. They just have a cool sound to them 😎 Kind of like they were meant for a different time. But nothing really stood out to me on this album except for the well known “Bang a Gong.” Some of the songs were kind of boring. I think I like this one about the same as the other T Rex album. Can’t recall the name of it 🤔 I’m just not sure why BOTH albums need to be listened to before I die.
more varied than expected, but I don't love Bolan's voice
One banger. The rest ok, not great
A great album to put on the background while getting work done as it doesn't require much active listening. Fun listen. Get it On is a classic, and I also really enjoyed Rip Off.
Fine
Pretty solid old school rock album. No song jumped out as a real banger but no no duds either.
woah didn't know they did cosmic dancer. this album is kinda really good
This was okay. Very classic rock and British
70s Glam Rock is definitely a mood. I did recognize one song on this album, and it's the only song that really stuck out for me. Overall it was a middle of the road album for me.
I liked this! Very classic 70s.
monolithh
An inspiration to so many glam rock bands of the 80's. They've got some sleaziness to them but not too over the top like many would attempt to do. It was pretty chill for this genre. Nothing stands out to me. Get it On is a great song, but I find the band to be very repetitive.
One all-time classic song surrounded by a lot of very competent but otherwise unmemorable tracks. There are worse things to listen to if you just want to have some fun.
Bang a Gong might be the greatest song about fucking ever written and recorded. The rest of the album is just okay.
Not really my cup of tea, but not bad.
Rating (1-5): ✩✩✩ (But it's sitting in that middle ground between 3 and 4) Will I be listening to this again: Maybe, I have a few songs saved What do I like about it: Even though they are british they sound american ahahahhah. Not but really, they do sound more like 50s american rock and roll (Elvis, Roy Hamilton, B.B. King) What I dislike about it: It was fine ;) Higlighted songs: Cosmic Dancer, Girl, Hot Love
Lots of familiar tracks in there
I just wasn’t feeling this one. It’s fine but not really in the headspace to appreciate it
It's hard to know what influence it had on release. Now it seems very much of its time. The "bonus" tracks don't really had much to the experience. The stand out tracks are the most that still get played to death.
Not my jam, but an interesting album. Some good variety in the songs - Monolith in particular had some nice contrast in the singing. Decent. 2.5/5 stars.
It was fine, it was also just a lot. Songs seemed to go on for longer than what felt right. I did think the opening track k had a really good feel, but nothing else really hooked me quite as much. I think the biggest surprise was just how much this album sounds like it could have also been recorded by an alternative rock band in the mid 2000s. Everything old is new again I guess.
Nothing really stand out, other than Get It On, pretty good for the times, kinda one of those fun songs not like I have it on repeat, most songs blended together into whatever, but really appreciated the out of left field sound of Rip Off, kind of went out with a bang.
This was fun! I’m not sure if I had any great revelations or anything, and it didn’t make me rethink glam rock (still not my thing), but it was a fun listen!
Its fine, nothing mind blowing here. Likely a lot more ground breaking back then than it sounds today now.
Moet ik nog een keer beter luisteren
Good music - lyrics. Yeah, not sure about that.
Pretty fun, that voice is just smooth as butter.
Liked this - surprised how much it reminded me of Donovan. Got a bit samey for me in parts, but a solid album all around.
I was surprised that I liked this album so much. I had only heard one song off of it. The others were great.
Quite a fun album but a lil forgettable… like I liked the songs in it, but i couldn’t remember a track once it ended. Saying that, pretty good for early 70’s stuff.
Very normal
Marc Bolan has the perfect voice for this. I liked Cosmic Dancer, Bang a Gong, and Life’s a Gas the most, but most of everything else here is enjoyable glam rock in of itself.
Loved Get It On!
It seems I wore my long legs today
nice, auf eine interessante art rockig. macht laune, gute riffs.
This album was full of surprises. There were some fantastic, 5-star songs (Jeepster, Bang a Gong). But it felt like there were just as many, if not more, forgettable songs that cancel those 5-star songs out. I'd give this 3.5 if that was an option, but absent that option - rounding down to 3 stars.
Maybe this is just turning into my personal diary
Great guitar tones, or actually overall great tones. Everything is super warm & punchy & tight. Some very nice orchestral stuff at times. Marc has a very unique & soft voice, where even if he’s getting loud, it’s still almost a whisper. Favourite song is probably mambo sun
This album starts so strongly for a glam album. I'm not a glam fan compared to my late dad. "Get It On" is overrated, in my opinion, and I don't care. The rest of the songs on "Electric Warrior" are fine. It's also an ok album to listen to in the background. 3 stars for "Electric Warrior".
Another artist I've never heard of. Listened to the album once but I'll give it another listen because I think it might make me appreciate it more. I didn't
This my second T Rex album this week. So no time to change my view. I repeat that I appreciate the talent Mark Bolan had and he was no doubt a master songwriter. That said this music was never to my taste. This album contains more of the early 70’s hits which were ubiquitous at the time so if you want just one album of T Rex hits this is the one. But not one I’d be interested in. 3/5 18/5/25
Good album. Very sparse sound - there's not a lot of going on so you can hear all the instruments with great separation. I feel like the recording and production was very typical of albums at that time.
Great cover, lovely tunes, good vibes. A bit lightweight. Favourite tracks: Monolith, Planet Queen, Jeepster
nice
A fun rock album solid enough this listen
I liked it more than I expected, and enjoyed some of the album cuts I've never heard before more than the singles... but overall I'm kinda "eh...its okay" about it
Better than I thought it would be
Favorite tracks on this: Mambo Sun Cosmic Dancer Girl I love the cover for this album. Pretty iconic. The album's significance in the canon of guitar driven rock is appreciated. Some of the guitar riffs are pretty great. A fun, good album. Not a perfect album.. 3.5/5
The song "Get it on" is really well known. But I don't understand why this has to be on this list. It sounds like generic classic rock to me. Nothing special. I like it though, but I don't get why this is considered groundbreaking.
Not bad
I think this album is good fun. OK - don't go looking for anything more. It's not profound, there's no virtuoso playing, and some of the songs sound like each other. For pure pop I'd go to a lot of other places first. But there's a few good songs, and it's good fun.
2.8
Groovy, love mambo sun.
Opening track sucks you right in, great riffs, warm 70s rock sound.
A well-produced glam rock album with some great tunes but nothing that really sticks out
I've heard so much about this album. I had very high expectations. I liked it but didn't love it. I'd give it a 3.5 I guess.
Fun album
Cool rock album. Some blues, some nice electric riffs, and fun vocals.
Sick riffs babyyyyyyyyyyyyy
Kind of mellow songs mixed with a few rocking ones. Not bad at all, it's very easy to listen to. The variety is really nice too, seems to check a lot of boxes. This was before my time but I could see myself listening to this if I was around in those days.
3- Stars (7/15)
Despite a pretty memorable set of tunes I never have found myself dying to keep it in rotation. Its great when Marc Bolan is delivering prismic psychosexual energy, but I feel the band isn't seconds away from smashing their shit enough. Great guest vocals from Flo and Eddie all over this record, they do this really satisfying nasally drone that really colors the arrangement.
I've heard this album once or twice before. While some tracks are more forgettable than others, overall this is a good album. Get It On is the best song but the whole album has a cohesive sound that I appreciate. I would listen again.
I don’t believe the hype if there is any
I don't get why T. Rex are so revered but that's just me. They sound good but that's it. Nothing really struck me as incredible or profound. I was never like "Woah that's super cool". Therefore they get a mid 3 stars. I'm convinced Britain keeps trying to gaslight the rest of the world into thinking they have a ton of incredible musical talent that just ends up being mid (or trash cough cough Radiohead) and kinda disappointing, to try to be relevant. Stay in your lane you silly little island.
I love the atmosphere and grooves this album sets from the first song - 'Mambo Sun' is a great opener, and a fantastic spectacle of the T-Rex sound. Other than the two other obvious picks, I am struggling to find any further highlights on this record. No bad, not amazing. Best Tracks: - Mambo Sun - Cosmic Dancer - Get It On Worst Tracks: - Girl - Rip Off Rating: 6/10
Sexy as hell!
The music is ok but I hate the tone of the lead singer lol
Lo único que rescato es lo limado que esta el cantante. Me gusta que giman al micrófono. Nota: 3.0
Get it on
I love the trumpet in "Girl" but I fucking hate it in "the motivator" and "rip off" because it sometimes sounds like a car horn which gives me a heart attack while driving
Great classic rock. At times cheesy at times trying too much to be bowie. But sounding good.
Already own this album, already enjoy it. Good glam rock, pop rock. Doesn't go as heavy as I always imagine the album cover implies (and that album cover alone is iconic), but a lot of catchy songs the more I listen to. Never disappointed when it gets played. Bang a gong (get it on) was my intro to T. Rex and is featured here
Favorite Track: Get It On
Nice sounding album but a bit samey
Did Bowie borrow some inspiration?
This was ok, the genre isn't particularly my cup of tea and it went on a bit too long. The singer has a bad case of what I describe as "Bowie voice". There's something about that weird affectation I find quite off-putting
Decent vibes.
Solid! Enjoyed
Alright. This is kinda fun.
This is perfectly fine....it's inoffensive, it's in tune, it's reasonably pleasant to listen to, yet it's completely vanilla. It's a 3 because it's not good enough to get a 4 but I do hasten to add that it's not bad
Some songs were great, but it wasn't consistently super cool from A to Z
Good, but not great, proto-glamor rock. Clearly this sound influenced Bowie, who took it to new heights. But I could easily get bored of this. Still I appreciate the influence. 3/5
Really wanted to like this album more but I couldn't. Feels like its my jam but it never really hits that point that sends it up for me. Stand out tracks: Mambo Sun, Get it On, Life's A Gas
0° grau pra mim ta otimo
Might grow on me but honestly feel like I totally get the influence but like... Bowie and the New York Dolls had better songs.... lol Band a Gong rules though
Always a fun listen. Many bands owe their sound to this. You can really hear The Smith Westerns and other 2000's fuzz rock revivalists.
3,5/5 Alkuun vaikutti oikein kivalta, sitten jostain syystä tylsältä ja loppua kohti taas oikein hyvää. Melkein 4 tähteä.
Odotin enemmän, eipä tullut uutta suosikkia tästä musiikki- ja soitinyhtyeestä.
Ihan miellyttävä albumi ja mukavasti vaihtelua. Toi mieleen Elton Johnin tuotannon, soundit toimii.
Bang a Gong is easily the best song on here. The songs that sound the most similar to it are good too. Everything else fades quickly from my memory. I really liked the way the album closed though!
T.Rex figured out quicker than anyone that prog was not the answer to the death of the American dream. As the pioneer of glam this feels like Bolan is finding his feet and when it peaks it peaks. Mambo Sun opens with a slinky proto-funk number with some ahead of their time delay and reverb tricks. Cosmic Dancer probably goes a bit too Beatles with over-orchestrated crooning. More studio tricks. More glam. Jeepster gets a good balance of bluegrass and glam-sheen, Bolan makes it real clear what it was about the Beatles that made them so great, that merging of pop sensibilities with good 12 tone. Monolith opens like a Kendrick Lamar track but loses steam with boring low-energy noodling. Lean Woman Blues slows things down even more but is mercifully a straight blue number with a short run time and no pretensions. Bolan finally picks up the energy on the second side with Get it On, the original and best glam track, one of the greatest songs ever written. I remember it being a bit faster and having a bit more of a crescendo, in reality its still quite slinky and filthy which I think is better. Owes a lot to Velvet Underground I think. Planet Queen reverts to psych rock tropes but at least has a good beat and the second half gets a bit funky. Girl is a bit ponderous, the brass sections are a good idea but it doesn't really go anywhere. The Motivator keys back in to what makes Get it On such a good track with sly lyrics and bass leaning against the sultry rhythm and some great counterpoint. Life's a Gas goes back to low energy noodling. Rip Off ends the album with a great proto-post-punk number, I just wish the whole album could have been stuff like this and Get it On! I agree with a few other people that its a real struggle to decide if this is a 3 or a 4. Bolan is a genius and one of precious few heroes in early 70s UK (see what I did there?). Visconti is also a genius and he deserves credit for such a well put together album. This was a great reminder that T.Rex have some great songs but unfortunately I just couldn't see myself sitting down to listen to this all the way through again.
Liked some more than others
pretty nice, if a bit repetitive. could've done without being yelled at by a bus driver...
I did’t mind this album although some of the songs did kinda sound the same and blended into one another. I recognised a couple of them but overall was new to me. very mid
Get it on.
This was pretty good. Feels like Black Keys gots some inspiration from this!
This album somehow sounds shockingly modern while also retaining its 1970s groove. You could have told me this album came out in 1971, or lied and said 2010 by some band like Wolfmother or Greta Van Fleet and I'd have believed either one. Standouts for me were "Jeepster" (lyrics were dumb-ish but the guitar and song itself are just fun), "Lean Woman Blues," and I never knew "Get it On" was T.Rex, but it's a hit for a reason. This was a great album, well produced, sounded sharp, had some slick guitar parts and mostly just plain catchy tunes! Nothing really really special but I had fun listening to it. Tough to choose between 3 or 4 stars for this one, would rate this probably a 3.5 if we had more granularity.
This album reminds me of like rock a bit, I like the songs so I would give the album a 7/10. Im intrested in this genre of music
I like this album because the songs are giving chill vibes. I like the melody in Get it on Bang a Gong.
Do you want to listen to some music that has some guitar? Well in Bang Gong you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has some nice guitar? Well in Planet Queen you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song. Do you want to listen to some music that has a good beat? Well in The Motivator you can! I rate this song a ⭐⭐⭐. I kind of recommend this song.
Good to heat other songs by T. Rex besides Jeepster and Bang a Gong.
Nothing in this really stood out to me, very slow and dragging, but some songs had good guitar solos at least. 3/5
I'm not a fan of T. Rex, but listening to the album as a whole I thought it was good. I don't think I've become a fan or will seek it out further, but still good.
I enjoyed this one. A solid 3 pushing into 4 territory. Amazing how much Power Station from 1985 ripped off their sound.
Iconic album art but haven't heard the album before. I had forgotten we had previously had a t. Rex album until reading Jamie's review, which is pretty damning I guess. They use the same trick in a lot of tracks on this album and they sound pretty familiar. There were some good ones though, get it on obviously pretty iconic. Life's a gas was good too. Overall a bit disappointed. Was expecting more l
I was really digging the album until “Bang a Gong” took me out of it. I struggled to recover.
I banged the gong and now I am gone.
Backstroking in this sound bath
Cool beats and enjoyable, but not revisiting
I played this album a lot when I was younger but only connected with the singles "Get It On" and "Jeepster".
38/1001 Bolan's confidence in what he was doing, when combined with his ear for a decent, but simple, pop singalong shines through during the best moments of Electric Warrior. Elsewhere, a dreary reliance on 12-bar riffery exposes the limitations of the format and its inspiration. There is some subtlety - the trademark 70s drum slap-backs still sound fresh on the album's best arrangements - but it also does sag in places through lack of variety. Far from perfect, but there are enough straight-up solid tunes here to lift this above the average. I'm not a massive fan, but I can see why Bolan was such a big name before his untimely death. Cosmic Dancer is great, the singles are fine, and the quality is spread more thinly among the remaining tracks, but it is rarely awful.
got me in a good mood and was surprised by not the typical kind of 70s records singing
VERY 1970s; Stones-y blues-rock feel, with vocals maybe more stonery/a bit Pink Floyd-adjacent. Bass has chops, a bit bluesy, lots of rocking 5ths. Would listen again, a nice album. Highlights: Cosmic Dancer, Monolith, Bang a Gong (I've heard this song before, but it doesn't appear to have been used in any movies etc.)
Nice to revisit some of these tunes
Yeah
Surprisingly meek and pleasant for an album called Electric Warrior in a genre associated with flamboyance
3 stars feels harsh but 4 is too high. Really enjoyed parts while others didn't do much for me. Would listen again
T. Rex have always had a strange mythology around them that I’ve found to be quite impenetrable, so this is the first time I’ve truly listened to them. Marc Bolan is likely the best to ever carry glam rock on his back, but as a genre I feel it’s quite limited; there’s a reason Bowie left the genre behind to move onto (arguably) better things. This album was good, but just good.
Alright
Cosmic Dancer is good. Get It On is a well loved classic. Jeepster is great, too. Overall sound is pretty catchy.
This felt like such an easy going record. It was fun but not crazy fun. I kinda just zoned out for a lot of it but every now and then, a riff or something would catch my attention. It seems like Stu Mackenzie was trying to copy the T. Rex lead guitar tone on B741.
I've heard the album that followed this one, but it's my understanding that the group really embraced the glam rock sound with this entry specifically. This album never really "takes off" if you will. I'm sure many will recognize "Bang a Gong" once that bassline starts playing, but the remainder never really capitalizes on that, however. I guess I wasn't quite as entertained as I was expecting to be. I didn't realize that glam rock could be such low energy.
From the Wikipedia page for this album: “ The lyrics on the new album marked a dramatic departure from the dense Romantic poeticism and Tolkien fantasy imagery of Bolan's first five albums, including the most recent T. Rex album”. Let me tell you, they should have stuck with the Tolkien stuff, since that would have been much more interesting than this. Nothing against this, but dense poetic fantasy music rules. Overall, this was fine but not took memorable. Side B was much better than Side A. Favorite Track: Bang a Gong (Get it On)
A very OK rock album. The jazz and string elements were pretty nice, though overall pretty plain. 3/5
I had heard this album before, but didn’t remember it very well. After listening to it again, I found that there were a few songs I really liked, but the rest were pretty meh. In the end, this album works out to be a three for me.
Not a bad album, no where near a "need" to listen. Another case of a single hit getting an album on a list where the album itself is rather Meh.
Feel kinda let down by this one. With about 10% more swagger it would have been a banger.
Heard it before. T. Rex makes such sweet music, it puts me in a good mood and inevitably makes me think about Billy Elliot 3/5
Interesting listening experience, and I think I’ll return to it. I absolutely love the guitar solo on “Monolith”. Expressive and fun vocals. Standout tracks are: “Monolith” and “Lean Woman Blues”.
Interesting mix of Glad rock and the Blues. Highlights are “Lean Woman Blues”, “Jeepster” and “Get it on”.
None of these songs break the five-minute mark (most under four), but they all seem to drone on longer than they should. I guess that's not a very good sign. Now, I know very little about the technics of music, but maybe this "lag" is because the songs are written in a strange half-time or something? I mean, I like Robert Palmer's version of "Get It On", but I don't like it as much here. I dunno... All-in-all, it wasn't a painful experience, though - so I'll just slap a 3 on it and move on.
This was decent. Album lacked depth, and I didn’t really care for the vocals. T Rex might be the dumbest name for a band. I want to rate them lower just for that, but I’m not feeling that level of petty today.
Enjoyable overall. I would enjoy it more if they had more raw energy though.
heard 'get it on' a million times without knowing who the artist was... (i still don't know who the artist was)
vi dirò, non malaccio
It was alright
It’s okay not my taste
Kind of like it.
Pretty good glam-rock pioneering.
Not bad, but not super memorable.
I like the flamboyant nearly gleeful vibe. I've long been a fan of Get In On. Sounds like a band having fun and it's infectious. But honestly, the album taken all together, from the vantage point of 2025, it actually kind of mid, isn't it? I did dig the groove of The King of the Mountain Cometh.
This is an album that in theory I should absolutely love. There’s some great moments on the album and some beautiful arrangements. I can’t pinpoint why exactly, but it’s just not my vibe.
Quite cool for being glam rock, which I am not particularly into. 3.5 stars
A band that have done some truly classic singles during the early stages of glam and indeed Bang It On (Get It On) is a veritable evergreen glam stomper and easily my favourite here. There’s a couple of other decent snazzy tunes near the beginning like Cosmic Dancer but most of the other songs are actually fairly humdrum rock n roll and Bolan’s voice is also a bit too tremulous and annoying. An okay album to wash dishes to. Less Electric Warrior, more like Electric Scullion.
6/10 Harmless rock and or roll. you know...for kids. 3-3-2025
Track 1 was my favorite - great guitar tone. Cool 70s era music though.
Decent
Fav: Get It On Least Fav: The Motivator Not much to say, but I do think the album cover goes hard af
Wulah c'est sympa en vrai
T. Rex? More like T. Meh.
Really enjoyable to listen it, the first songs were pretty good like the instrumental part was really good but the lyrics didn't really get me but then I really got into "Get It On" like that's for me the best of the album, there is this part in the chorus which catch your attention and you want to sing along. I also really enjoyed "Lean Women Blues", there was something in the singer's voice that was pretty nice. That was a good album, which made me discover some good ones but I wasn't amazed so that's a 3/3.5.
It's decent, but the entire time you're just waiting for something interesting to happen. Good background music, I guess?
While steeped in rock and competently played, these songs lack an edge that truly makes them stick with me. Some of the songs look and sound alike, on account of using the same basis. It's like they are trying to sell you the same idea multiple times.
non rock come mi aspetterei
This is one of those albums that I get where I only know the popular song before I listen to it and after listening, understand why I only know the popular song. Get it On is a fun song, but everything else is alright. I think it has to be because of the vocals. I agree with some of the reviews I read on this site that Bolan kind of sounds a little annoying. It doesn’t really help that, lyrically, most of the songs rely on repetition. It’s especially noticeable on Cosmic Dance, god that song was a little grating between the womb and the tomb. There are some nice songs on here like Girl and Life’s A Gas, but otherwise everything’s just alright. I think I’ll just stick to Get it On for this album. Favorite track: Bang A Gong (Get It On) Other hits: Girl, Life’s A Gas, Mambo Sun, The Motivator, Rip Off
Mambo Sun, The Motivator, and Bang a Gong all sound like variations on the same song, and sound like what I expect from T-Rex. But the rest of the songs on the album sound different, in a good way.
Not bad. Funky but good. 73/100
the slider is a triumph this is just amusing
This album surprised me. It started off meh, but picked up after Bang A Gong. The singers vocals are annoying at times, but the instrumental makes up for it at times. Solid album. 3.25 Favorite Songs: Bang A Gong (Get It On), Rip Off Least Favorite: Cosmic Dancer (why does he say dance like that?)
Every time I think of T. Rex the image of my minds eye is this proto metal band that rocks. And then I listen to them and it’s like this totally fine 70s rock album that never gets past the second gear. Like I love the song Jeepster, but I wish the other songs kicked it up a bit more. Idk man. It’s fine
very obviously high quality with a really strong two song opening run, but I doubt that I’ll return to it much
Flutes and guitar on girl?? che slay
This sounds like Thin Lizzy or The Rocky Horror Picture Show. I think lots of people like this kind of thing but I don’t get it. I guess the Baby Boomers stopped caring about peace and love and spiritual enlightenment and just wanted to be gender fluid and get laid and snort cocaine and later start disco dancing? This is better than Donovan et al but it doesn’t really click for me.
Good production for an old rock album. Probably would have listened to this in high school during the era when I was listening to classic rock more. Fits right in. Some slower almost Velvet Underground sound on one or a couple tracks, but mostly just standard pretty good rock. Last song (Rip Off) was distracting and was really the only miss.
BANG A GONG! Other than that this was just an alright listen.
