I liked!
A couple recognizable songs. Idk burned out by this point in this list. Gonna keep going though
6/10. It has been brought to my attention that I may not be being harsh enough given every album on this list is destined to be very good. So here goes nothing. Look, everything on this album is really good - it's a lovely fusion of blues and rock which I imagine is quite typical of its time, but I have to say nothing here was awe-inspiring. Like, everything was just sort of what I expect from blues and a couple of songs felt like they were building up to something that never happened. Personally, I missed the presence of some 'epic' guitar parts which would've elevated the whole album for me. Get it on is definitely a banger and it did have me humming it all day though. Idk, maybe this more genre defining than I'm giving it credit for but for me three stars seems fair.
I could hear right away how this band was influential, esp to many early/mid 200s bands. The sound was more modern than I expected, but after a few songs I began to feel like it was a bit repetitive and the melodies all sounded a little to same ish. When a song started playing and I was like "ooh this is cool, what makes the sound so different" I looked at my phone and realized the album was over and Spotify had started auto playing a Led Zeppelin song ... So yeah. If their album was a led zeppelin album I'd love it I guess. 65/100
Based on mambo Sun, and seeing bang a gong on there, I thought I'd enjoy the whole album more, but it turned out to just be so-so.
Another album I've heard at least a million times, thanks to it being on the jukebox of a restaurant where I worked. It's a fine album. Nothing really wrong with it. I'm not big on Glam Rock, but this was an early example of the genre, so I guess it is important.
T Rex is great, but the songs don't really go anywhere. Mostly nonsense rhyming repeated too many times. I still love the sound, but I wish there was more meat on the bones.
很安静 很经典
First song gives me Teenage Dirtbag vibes right away. Sample? This first song i keep waiting to take off and it doesn't. Very frustrating listen Lean woman blues starts to make the album better. Get it on. A song I've actually heard before. Love all the instruments in this one. More teenage dirtbag in these songs. This was definitely inspiration for that song Ended on a good stretch of songs. 3 stars
Aight
Meh.
Decent, but nothing outstanding. Chill glam rock, almost like a less exciting version of Queen at some points.
This was just alright for me.
Solid album! I’m glad I listened, but off of the reputation of T.Rex as the first glam rocker, I did expect something more bombastic. This was perhaps an early draft of the style? Still fun, either way.
I think this is a great album. Five stars for many. But I'm just not that into it.
Didn't know we already met before, glad to be reacquainted.
Hadn’t listened to T Rex before aside from “Bang a Gong” of course. While that’s among the best tracks on Electric Warrior, it’s a solid album overall. Nice, sleazy sounding, low-key early glam rock. I’m not sure how often I’ll come back to this record but I like it. Also I meant to give You Want it Darker a 3 and write a brief note. I liked it overall, very strong lyrically. It starts off strong, especially the lead title track. It ends well too. But the middle feels like a bit of a slog.
7/10
Da un titolo così figo aspetti una gran punkettata, ed invece…
This was probably incredible when it came out. Just something very new and different at the time. Now, all I can think of is glam rock and hair metal and no thanks. Not a bad record though, just not my personal taste.
me gustó y descubrí de donde salió el riff principal de cigarretes & alcohol (Get it on)
I definitely got Beatles vibes from them, similar time, genre etc. I did like it overall, but nothing really stood out to me
A tough sounding album by an apex predator with an unexpectedly relaxed feel
Ye it’s alright, it’s just rock n roll with a bitta lipstick innit?
Not bad, but not my thing.
This was fine but nothing about it was very captivating to me.
I wasn’t expecting it but I really liked this album, was a good listen and would proselytize listen to most of the songs on here again
Pretty good album although no song in particular stuck with me.
T-Rex was more image than substance at a time when image was all that mattered
More influence on the White Stripes than you might expect
Not my favourite but I didn't hate this. I do wish the entire album was more like the b sides. So many of the other's were just so one note and boring.
herm.. this album was good, had a few recognizable hits from the big man himself. i could groove to a few of the tracks, felt like i could jump around to monolith. 6/10 skibidi toilets
Pretty good. Great guitar playing. Not really my style.
Wieder mal eine Gruppe, deren Name ich noch nie gehört habe. Zumindest "Get It On" und "Hot Love" sind recht bekannt.
I liked it😄
Täähän kuulostaa Black Keysiltä, tai siis toisin päin. Bändin jäsenillä on tätä tehdessä hymy huulilla. Paikoin yllättävän fiftari.
3,5/5 Lekker albumpje, vooral leuk om originele cosmic dancer te horen, ik zie mezelf het ooit nog wel eens opzetten
As I do often I had this playing while doing something else. Something that doesn't require much concentration and can be abandoned at any time without consequences. This did not caused me to do that. I did recognized some of it but it never grabbed my attention.
Salright
Doesn’t get more middle of the road than this one! It’s fine. It is not spectacular.
Does every track sound the same?
Nice mellow rock album. Some bluesy elements to it, which isn't my favorite type of music. Hey, I recognize the Bang a Gong song. Catchy tune. Overall a good 70's album. Glad I heard it, but wouldn't seeking out again. Maybe a 3.5 on this.
I first heard of T. Rex as one of the groups that Guns N' Roses covered on their "The Spaghetti Incident?" album of covers. Soley based on that cover, I wrote them off as some early glam club act from LA. I'm happy to hear now--all of these years later--that I was wrong. This is more like experimental pop psychedelic folk. In other hands, "Jeepster" would be a back porch country song but through the lens of T. Rex, it is a bit more bar room loose and sonically could fit on the Rocky Horror Soundtrack. We stay in the Rocky Horror style in the arrangement of oohs and ahhs of the backing vocals on "Monolith." And now I better understand the type of glam they introduced; this isn't Poison or Cinderella, but more conceptually aligned with Bowie and the Velvet Underground. From a songwriting standpoint, they aren't breaking many rules or pushing many boundaries, but the sheer breadth of the styles they are incorporating (rock, country, blues) into their own sound displays an appreciation of musical roots while ushering them into a refreshed era of modern sonics. The album maintains an up tempo groove to keep the party going, but by the end of the album, all the allure is overplayed a bit too much.
I like this. I've heard Bang a Gong, of course, but I also recently heard Cosmic Dancer on a commercial (why am I getting introduced to music primarily via commercials now? 😭), and it caught my attention enough to look up who it was, so I was happy to encounter it again tonight. Something about that song pulls me in. I like the lyrics: "I danced myself right out the womb... I danced myself into the tomb." I got hints of Bowie, Weird Beatles, and I could see the roots of later Britpop in the cool, unruffled vibe. 3.5
This stuff sounds ahead of it time and had a bit of a David Bowie tint to it. I like Mr. Bolan's voice.
Kuunneltu ja ei traumatisoinut jee
Seemed very 60’s Beatles like
Fun rock album
Decent songs, good lyrics, superb delivery, but let down by some muddy production and unsophisticated arrangment.
I only recognized the song Get it on. It's a good song and the rest of the album is somewhat forgettable. Alright 70s glam rock.
Lyssnat fram och tillbaka på denna och the slider. Första låten på denna, "mambo sun" är dem bästa på båda skivorna (bättre än get it on).
I've gone through stages with this album since I first heard it at 13. Initially, it took me by surprise and I didn't understand it. Still don't in some ways. Then I decided I hated it and I really never listened to it for many years. Cosmic Dancer is rife with meaning. An amazing song. Planet Queen, Cosmic Dancer both very pleasant. Songs like Rip Off are still pretty unpleasant to me. Vocals on Planet Queen are so unique and characteristic of no band but T Rex.
There are a few annoying duds, but in general it's some decent proto-glam, from before glam got to be too much for me. Never knew who sang "Bang a Gong (Get it On)," and glad to now connect it to a name. Which, as their most enduring song, really doesn't sound glam. Still disappointed in the lack of dinosaurs, but if this and Sparks are both glam, this is much more tolerable any day.
Unfortunately, when I saw the date and the genres I immediately knew I'd be filtered a bit by this. It's solid, well played, and I can easily see its influence, but straightforward early 70s glam rock isn't my forte in the slightest. When I even struggle with Hunky Dory (which this album reminds me of in spades) it makes a lot of sense why this album failed to connect with me. It's solid but nothing I'd return to over time. 6/10
I know 'Get it on' all too well from my days playing trumpet in my high school pep band. I had never heard the rest of this album before. Nothing grabbed me - it was fine, just pretty average.
3/5 (easy listening) Had no idea this is where "Bang a Gong" came from. Groovy rhythm section. Vocals/lyrics meh. Very 1971.
Contains some nice songs but a little too mellow overall. Mambo Sun rules though.
The music on this has some appeal, but the writing, please - "....bang a gong, get it on...," or "...girl I'm just a jeepster for your love." Not exactly stellar.
sticker inte ut särskilt men ändå okej
How could a band with a name like T. Rex have music this soft?
Enjoyed it more than I though, first time listening to a T Rex akbum
Not my type of music
Good classic rock
Pretty good
Fun. Worth listening. Definitely hear some samples in there!
It was fine, but didn't excite me
Favs: cosmic dancer, get it on
Не моё, но норм
Nunca había escuchado al artista, me gusto.
First time hearing to this. Glam rock starting out.. Favorite track: Bang a gong other picks: cosmic dancer, mambo sun
Hmm. Not that exciting actually, but Get it on, on the other hand, iconic!
Standard rock and roll. Some good hits, like Lean Woman Blues, Get It On, and Life's A Gas. Solid album. Best song: Lean Woman Blues
Was really hoping for more out of this. It’s got that Bowie feeling that I love, but none of the unique melodic decisions that Bowie comes up with. All the songs end up sounding very samey, and the hushed vocals get tiring quick.
I really thought "Get It On" was a Rolling Stones song. Interesting. Anyhow, that song is pretty good. So is Cosmic Dancer. "Rip Off" has pretty good energy. Parts of this album sounded like 60's blues/rock and some inched towards 70's classic rock. This is a high 3 for me.
Almost a 4. I feel like the quality drops off in the second half, but overall I like their sound and this represents thevsort of new-old music that I was hoping to be exposed to through this challenge.
Classic Dad Rock
This album manages to sound incredibly influential and also quite derivative, all at once. Influential in the sense that I have heard numerous indie-rock acts that clearly grew up on a healthy diet of T. Rex (cough *Cage The Elephant* cough). It is really hard to believe this album was released in 1971. Some poor redditor was just as dumbfounded at this fact as me and all but accused T. Rex of ripping off David Bowie (lead singer & founder Marc Bolan and Bowie were both born in 1947 and had a mutual respect of one another). There were a few tracks that reminded me of The Beatles which is unsurprising considering the release year. Highlights for me included the dynamic drum work & occasionally dramatic vocals. While this isn't an album I will likely return to, it is very clearly a groundbreaking release that is worth a listen. Top 3: 1. Cosmic Dancer 2. Lean Woman Blues 3. Jeepster Bottom 1: Rip Off Overall Score: 7.0/10
A little psychedelic, a little shoegaze. I feel like the mixing really muted down the instruments to match the softness in the vocals. Enjoyed it well enough, but these days doesn't really stand out.
Fun album. It took me a little bit to enjoy the singer's voice, but I enjoyed it. The Extended Version is better than the original release in my opinion. It's a fun album with good guitar parts. Probably a 3.5 Liked Songs: "Mambo Sun", "Monolith" , "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" , "The Motivator" , "Rip Off" , "Raw Ramp" , "Woodland Rock" , "King of the Mountain Cometh"
Muy bueno, me gustó mucho. Es medio basicon y no es que te deslumbra, pero tiene riffs medio de ska o funk que muestran algo distinto.
Decent bluesy 70s rock. Better than expected.
Unexciting 70's bluesy rock.
Ecoutable. Léger. Get it on et la dernière.
Man kan höra ganska väl vart The Black Keys fått mycket av sitt sound från. Ganska bra platta. Gubbrock.
Not my personal taste but solid album. Favorite song: Rip Off This band made the song 20th century boy.
This was quite a journey. I wasn't listening closely, unfortunately, so I can't give super concrete responses to most of the tracks, but I did enjoy having it on and I know I was humming along to most if not all of the tracks. I probably won't listen to it again thought -- Marc Bolan's sound is not really nice for me to listen to, but I appreciate it for the importance it has. Three stars.
Likably loose and tossed-off-seeming, but with a distinct sameyness; several songs sound like outtakes or variations on “Bang a Gong.” This is music for super chill cool kids or slackers (a generation before that term came into vogue). “Life’s a Gas” is best cut. Lyrics (particularly the women-to-autos similes) won’t make anyone forget Lennon and McCartney (though it must be said that the women-to-celestial-bodies metaphors are notably more effective). Cool use of strings, horns, the wah-wah pedal and guitars run backward. Still, for all the cool, it does read a little tired, a touch dull. However it does succeed in at least one sense: it makes one want to get the bong out.
I think I'd be as likely to listen to this album again as I would a Zeppelin album. To that extent, I'm surprised I'm less familiar with this band.
This was fun - I already knew "Get It On" so I sort of knew what to expect. I was surprised to hear some quieter songs and orchestra features. It did get a bit repetitive toward the end of album.
I've already had a T. Rex album (The Slider) and thought it was repetitive and forgettable. This album gets the exact same feedback To me they seem to be a one hit wonder band with Get It On. If the rest of the album had been more upbeat like that song, it might have scored higher 3 ⭐️
This album was alright, nothing that special, to me at least. Nothing jumped out at me you know. I did like ripoff. That's about it. 3
yeah i mean its just soft rock really, sometimes with an extra special really boring twist but like
a cool 60's hippie rock record. lots of wah wahs and doo doos and good guitaring
This is what I expected the 70s to sound like. Some slower and some faster songs. Overall I would say it‘s not my favorite album, but if you are in the mood, go for it. Favorite songs: Mambo Sun Get It On (of course 😉) Hot love - A side
Bowie or Bolan? Hmmmm. Strange how we embraced one when the other was equally talented and influential. Really good album. Felt like nostalgia.
Get it On is obviously the highlight here and the album itself is notable for being the first glam album, but that’s about it. Seemingly standard 70s fare.
I liked this album better than their previous one (which I think might have been a rare 1 rating for me), it was okay. I still don't get the hype but I thought this was decent for its time. Rating: 3
Yes not bad.
CArino, sono indecisa tra 3 e 4
I don’t like it so much, but I see why people would like it so much
let meee innn nowww and it can beeee niceeeeee
Generic glam rock, kind of bland. Bang a Gong is ok
TRex is a mood. Compared to his rival/friend David Bowie, there's just as much style, but there's far less substance. It doesn't really matter. This album is here to make you boogie
Holds up very well
I've listened to this three times already
6/10. Had some goodness to it. Added 2 songs to the playlist. But a lot of parts were just “meh”.
Only song I recognise is Get It On but enjoying the rest of the album
Not extraordinary but we'll creafted indy pop
I really enjoyed this album! Good early 70s rock
Rock. Not bad, a little softer than I expected it to be. Still a fine listen
The album that defined the glam rock genre. Without this album you don't have a glam rock David Bowie era. Without this album you don't have half the hair metal bands of the 80s, who were all influenced by Marc Bolan's sound and look.
Good/ fun band from the 70’s. Good songs, certainly the sound of the 70’s.
I didn’t think it was anything to fawn over. The album didn’t necessary grab my attention in that overwhelming “I NEED TO STOP AND LISTEN” kind of way. It’s the archetype for that sleazy glam pop rock sound. It’s alright with me. Revolutionary for its time, I can concede that.
3/5
Get it on!!! Well...It is a good album but for me it is too slow and the tracks are not distinctive enough. I mean there are a lot of good tracks on this album e.g Mambo Sun, Planet Queen, Rip Off. But for the end of the album the album gettin tiring.
Quite the effect on its day, but a little ordinary now, perhaps.
I knew Bang A Gong but nothing else of T. Rex. I really liked Lean Woman Blues. The Motivator was so close to Bang A Gong that it would justifiably result in a copyright suit if it were written/recorded by someone else. Speaking of rip off, Rip Off should have been left off the album. It was an ill fit and not very good. Overall I liked his guitar sound. My expectations weren't high but I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. 3.5/5
Basic blues progression... simple is good. Less is more.
Pretty good bluesy rock n roll album.
A distinctive sound that still works.
Quite liked it. Low level rock
sounds very familiar at start, then "Get it on" - now i know why
Seventies soft rock done exactly as it should be. Not too bad!
Electric indeed
Another Ok album. Was good background music for a drive.
Not a bad album, just not really for me.
Not bad.
Better than The Slider, but I still really don't get the hype around this guy.
Decent
Not bad
rooaaaarr raaahh argh grrr graahhy (that was fun)
Nearly a 4 some chunky old riffs
Bra album, swagger vibes.
I still don't get the hype for this record, and i've given it a fair shake plenty times. I always think "this time will be different" but it just doesn't speak to me I guess. It feels too reserved and doesn't go hard when I feel like it should. It has it's moments sure but not enough to make me want to come back. 2.5/5
I think I’ve given this album a bad rap in the past, because it is quite good, and a shining example of glam rock. This album is at its best when it gets as close to David Bowie as possible, for example on “Cosmic Dancer” and “Planet Queen”. These songs would have easily fit in on Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, not just because of their titles and space-age lyrical themes, but because of the orchestrations and smooth vocals. “Get It On (Bang a Gong)” is iconic and along with the fantastic “Jeepster” does a good job cementing the album. But where it really falters are the more bluesy songs like “Lean Woman Blues” and “Girl” which fall flat compared to the more glam-esque songs. Overall though there’s a lot more that I like here than I originally remember, and “Girl” has grown on me even if “Lean Woman Blues” hasn’t. “Mambo Sun” is a great opener, and “Like a Gas” feels like it would be a great closing track. “Rip Off” is the actual closing track and it’s fine but it feels like the album peters out at the end.
I don't mind hearing this at all. Not great, but definitely not the worst album on the list. Favorite song: bang a gong.
british blues bang a gong
Solid 3.5. Glam rock 101.
Not as good as I was hoping sadly! Couple of huge tunes on it but other than that, I’m not having it!
Although it wasn’t the kind of genre I would usually listen to, I still enjoyed it quite a lot. I especially liked the song “Rip Off” Great album overall.
I can see how influential this album is. A lot of its sounds and concepts I recognize from other bands and songs that definitely came after. That said, not a big fan of it. It's too glitz, glitter, and pop for me. I like rock but hard rock. Always cool to glance into the legacy of a genre but unfortunately no saved songs and no real interest to come back.
This didn't really wow me. Everyone knows Bang a Gong (Get It On) but it's another song that has slowly been so overplayed that it no longer excites. I was excited to hear the rest of the album but it too didn't excite me all that much. I did like Cosmic Dancer's bizarre love of dancing and Life's a Gas and Rip Off. The rest just kind of played. Maybe you need to hear the entire album played as much as Bang a Gong to appreciate it. Or would that make you hate it?
Natuurlijk veren we halverwege weer even op bij 'Get It On', die weigert ooit te vervelen. 7,5/10 Highlights: Cosmic Dancer Jeepster Get It On Life's A Gas
Ken de hitjes van T. Rex maar nog nooit echt een album geluisterd. Cosmic Dancer zou zo één van de grootste Bowie hits geweest kunnen zijn. Get it On is natuurlijk echt een klassieker. Life's a Gas is mijn persoonlijke favoriet en nieuwe ontdekking. Kort maar prachtig. Verder lijkt het allemaal best veel op elkaar. Zo heeft the Motivator bijna dezelfde tune als Get it On. Vreemd dat twee zo vergelijkbare nummers op een plaat staan. T.rex was een getalenteerd mannetje, lekker plaatje. Maar niet bijzonder genoeg om echt vaker op te gaan zetten. 7/10 Highlights Cosmic Dancer Life's a Gas Rip Off
Meh, it was fine.
Przyjemne. Bardzo niezobowiązująca płytya, ale nie wiem czy się czymś wyróżnia. Get it on to znany utwór, kojarzy mi się ze Suitsami. Obiektywnie 3/5. Nie ma wad, ale też niczym nie zachwyca.
Liked it overall Standout songs: Cosmic Dancer Jeepster The Motivator
for a minute there i thought id die i thought id stay
Get It On and Hot Love are classics. The rest was just ok for me 3/5
I thought Life’s a Gas was really good, and the vibes were pretty consistently solid throughout, but I wasn’t too moved by it! Maybe it will grow on me over time!
Pretty fun! Some good bops and unique sounds but has never done a whole lot for me. I do revisit it every so often and have a good time though and today was no different!
i've never listened to this before but my next door neighbour in halls certainly did
First time listening to this, and Bang a Gong is the worst track on here. There's a lot more personality to these guys than I would have expected from that one single.
Yea, twas fun
It’s solid fuzzy Beatles rock. Pretty okay.
Slightly pervy, but kind of throbbing and muted, and it's easy to see how they changed things.
Enjoyable album, great vibe, though only a couple memorable songs.
Sort of a glam rock. Not my jam but not terrible
Pretty good
Fun! There are some really good songs on here. I didn't know anything about this coming in and was expecting a more hard rock type of sound from a band called t Rex, for some reason, but it's more glam. I'm interested in hearing more from this band. The album drags a bit toward the end though, for me.
Cute
I quite liked this album and know how much David Bowie LOVED Mark Bolan so I have to give it a three, even though it was a bit boring lol! :-)
5/10, достойно, но а) я такое не люблю, б) все треки однотипные
Kinda good, but didn't hear anything very special. Some Bowie-like vocal chain action which I hate too
It says a lot that this was the top-selling album in the UK in ‘71 - the same year as Who’s Next and Bowie’s Hunky Dory. Also says a lot that it doesn’t have the same staying power as those two albums. It’s got some catchy songs that were enjoyable to listen to, but I don’t see myself seeking this out for a 2nd or 3rd play.
3.5*
5/10
DECENT
Not bad, sounds like it kicked off the hair metal movement.
Really feels like a relic of its time great music also not for me
It was a fun album at times, but didn't feel substantive. At times it felt like it was trying too hard to come off as amazing and glamorous, which ended up sounding overly dramatic or like it was too much. The song that's stood the test of time ("Bang a Gong (Get It On)") was fun, if silly. Overall, it wasn't a *bad* album, per se, but if I find myself wanting to listen to fun glam rock I've got better options.
Not really my style but had 1 or 2 songs I liked.
Sounds good
Not available in Mexico
Pretty fun casual listening, might have to check out T. Rex a little bit more. 3.5/5
I had not ever listened to this album before but I thought it was pretty good.
It's a good album, but there are only two REALLY good songs, that I'd willfully put on, Get it On and The Motivator. 6/10 means 3 stars
Last time I got T. Rex it was #42 on the list. Now I'm at #881 a good three years later, and I feel as though I can appreciate T. Rex a bit more this time around. And in truth, I am enjoying Electric Warrior more than I remember enjoying The Slider. Not everything is sticking, but man he wrote some bonafide hits here.
This was decent. Nice variety of styles on here, and Bang a Gong is a, well, a banger.
Pretty good
Excellent guitar instrumentals but the album is a bit slow for my taste. "Get it On" stood out to me and I recognised the riff from Oasis’ "Cigarettes and Alcohol".
It's okay
Lekker album, nog nooit van de band gehoord. Lekkere chille muziek, maar ook niet gauw saai. Sommige liedjes wel veel herhaling qua tekst en ritmes.
This was fine. No impression on me at all.
no lo voy a escuchar en vez de esto voy a escuchar blue
А ничего. Я был занят другими делами, потому играло на фоне, но играло приятно
I actually found myself disappointed by this one. I was just expecting to hear more interesting instrumentals than what I got. Granted, my expectations were decently high coming in, so this album is still pretty good overall. It just left me wanting on several songs. Bang a Gong will always slap though
Eh, it started off pretty rough, but I lightened up to it a little. Not really my thing, but there's a few interesting things happening here in terms of genre fluidity.I'd give it a 2.75, so it'll get a 3 on this scale.
Pretty solid classic rock. I don't remember having heard any of these songs beyond "Bang a Gong" before, but I generally liked this album. 3.4.
Disappointing
Rock, Pop, 1971 -> 3
I really liked a lot of this and I really hated a lot of it. There's a tight 4 star album in here somewhere.
Didn't love the vibe. It almost felt cheesy to me. But it wasn't the worst!
This was enjoyable enough but I think if Get It On wasn't such a bop it would be a little bleh.
I can see why Get it on was the only hit off this album, but it was enough to get 3 stars
Great listen. Life’s a gas is one of the best songs from that era. IMO.
Some familiar songs, but overall not totally my vibe. Was worth a listen.
Rocking, gritty, jamming sounds. A record with a variety of instrumentation and rhythms, with some improvisationaly-wild vocals at times.
Initial listen was relatively positive but not mind blowing. I queued up another round after listening to some other stuff. Similar feel this time around. It might have been ground breaking at the time, but whatever they were doing was clearly absorbed by everyone, and now seems pretty normal. Perhaps it's an issue of them being an early visual glam sort of operation. Obviously that doesn't translate to the recording.
How did they get away with making The Motivator just Get It On again? I don’t really see the hype behind this one. Favorite songs were Monolith, Get It On, Girl, and Rip Off.
Pleasant dorky rock. The big hit was unexpected yet appreciated, and the rest was nice to hear. Might spin this one again someday.
Rock primi 70, chili, tranquillo, a tratti ricorda un po' il country, piacevole come sottofondo I guess, non spinge troppo. Mi ero rotta e ho voluto fare subito la review. Canzone preferita "Get it on", abbastanza famosa.
4/29/24. A bit of blues rock, wasn't too familiar with T. Rex initially. You can hear this sound in a lot of later popular rock albums so it's definitely influential, but thought this record was decent. Enjoyable.
I’m mixed on this one. On one hand, it’s cool as hell - lots of elements mixed in, great instrumentation, great harmonies - it’s got a lot to like and clearly good music. But, on the other hand, not a single song on this album got me really excited - Get It On is a perfect example - it’s a very good song, but for me, it generally blends in as fun but forgettable on classic rock radio. Overall, musical appreciation is a 4+ but enjoyment is a high 2, maybe low 3. Overall, I’d say a 3+ for me.
beetje gemengde gevoelens hierbij... de glamrock nummers vind ik wel goed, maar de softe zijn een beetje te soft naar mijn smaak... Bolan blijft natuurlijk wel een geweldige gitarist.
Solid album, loved the 70s sound especially the production with the horns, guitars and full sound from the guitars etc. Some songs felt very samey but clearly the album had a cohesive sound. Love Bring It On but haven't saved any other songs so give it a pass Rating.
downloaded 2,5,7,8 and 15. loooys of songs. didn’t hate it
Well, that was fun. Lots of pretty good ideas and feels here. The backing vocals strategically placed, a nod to the 50s. The use of reverse tapes, the little guitar fills, the subtle hits of horn and strings, the production. And then there is Cosmic Dancer, a gem of a song. There is a fragility in the voice of Marc Bolan that makes these songs different and more interesting than if they were just odes to life and pleasure. It is always sexy, but there is an innocence and something else here, a little restrained and sad. You can sense the tears are not far under all the makeup. He really captured what must have been the atmosphere in 1971, when the joy and the sunniness of the hippie movement collapsed on itself and started to show something much grittier.
The singer's vocal style annoys me and combined with the generic rock music makes this seem dated to me. Stand-out: Life's a Gas
same person as yesterday. same score as yesterday
I came into this with very high expectations, considering the big hit "Get It On" (aka Bang A Gong). I left somewhat underwhelmed, but I'll start with the pros. Great guitar riffs, a fun vocal performance from Marc Bolan that was extremely typical (and rightly so) for its time, and just an overall fun vibe. Comparable to Ziggy Stardust. The tracks are produced very well, almost to an 80s punk-rock standard. Now for the cons. The tracks just aren't particularly memorable, excluding the aforementioned Get It On and a few others (Cosmic Dancer, Jeepster, The Motivator). In fact, most tracks sound like budget versions of Get It On, demonstrating a lack of musical versatility. Although I just complimented Bolan's vocal, it gets just a little grating towards the end of the album. And the comparison to Ziggy Stardust flops as a positive when you realise just how much more conceptually interesting and catchy Ziggy Stardust is. Key tracks: Cosmic Dancer, Jeepster, Get It On, The Motivator
I want to love anything called T.Rex, but I was just kind of bored most of the album.
This was more poppy than I expected given the garage rock tendencies of TRex. Overall nothing crazy but good.
“Get It On (Bang A Gong)” was a pretty big sone in the early 70’s and used to get a lot of radio play throughout the decades. I presume it still shows up on Classic Radio. And while I had the song on a multi-band compilation album, I’ve never heard the whole album. But T Rex gets name checked a lot, from Mott the Hoople to The Ramones to The Who… So how’s the album? Well, it’spretty good. Kind of catchy, early glam…. Takes me back to the early 70’s Solid 3/5, will listen to again
Was ok- Get it on was good 3
Das Album ist gut verträglich und plätschert so vor sich hin.
Quite enjoyed, 70s rock vibes
4/5/24
I feel like the idea of T Rex is better than the reality.
The only song I've heard from them before is their great "Bang a Gong/Get it On", so I wasn't sure what to expect (and very glad that that was on this album, their sixth(!)). Although they don't have much else that stands out on this album, it's an interesting album overall, with a lot more variety (and interesting experimentation) on the B side. It's also funny how out of place "Get it On" seems, as it's so familiar and the rest of the album doesn't seem all that similar style-wise (except the near-copycat "The Motivator"). There's something kind of haunting (and memorable) about "Cosmic Dancer", too, and I enjoyed "Planet Queen". I know many of the associations I made with some of the songs aren't really related to "glam rock", but for me there were a lot of echoes of bands both before and after in this album--David Bowie, Beatles, Iggy Pop, Velvet Underground, and so on. Or so it seems to me. :) I'm just really glad we didn't have to listen to their earlier fairy-tale folk music, as that sounds really annoying.
Not the greatest album I have listened to. But it is well worth the time.
This was fine.
Pre listen: I know I listened to this a few years ago out of curiosity, but Spotify is telling me I didn’t “like” a single song. Not even bang a gong. So we’ll see what today’s listen holds.
Decent album, just didn't seem super outstanding. Great guitar
Good
Review on notion
5/10
Not that bad. Not that good. What catches attention is "Get It On" because it is known. The sad part is that no other track catches the attention :) But there are nice moments there, riffs and beats. So so.
Mischievous, infectious and fun, as if a mythical Norse trickster hosted a cabaret. It sounds like Marc Bolan is grinning and winking throughout this glam-rock frolic. I could never nail down whether he had a devilish or just a whimsical bent, but a reissue of this record included a T. Rex interview setting it straight that Marc was jovial, joyful and thoughtful, not to mention teeming with swaggering talent and a passion for making music.
A good album but not a great album. There just isn't enough of something but I'm not sure what it is.
This is a first for me I don't think I've ever heard T. Rex in general (although the song "Get It On" sounds familiar). This is a glam rock record, a genre that I'm far from well-versed in, but I do think that this album is far lighter than what I expected. I say lighter because a lot of these songs come off as super quiet, soft, and even one-note at times. All the staples of the genre are here, like the expressive lead vocals, the backing harmonies, and a very recognizable set of melodic patterns, but just minus all the extravagance I'd expect from a genre like this. Maybe that's me projecting my preconceived notions onto this album, but it feels like a lot of the songs are meant to pick up in pace, but simply don't. Nevertheless, I did enjoy a fair bit of this album still. I like the subtle space themes that run across a few of these tracks alongside the varied instrumental palette. I enjoyed the first two tracks quite a bit, and on the slower end, the horn-backed balled "Girl", I enjoyed as well. My favorite song here has to be the intimate and slower "Life's a Gas", the lyrical sentiment here really stuck with me, and the way it was performed was very charming. The more psychedelic instrumentation of this album also really shines on this song. While not being anything too special, frontman Marc Bolan was still very enjoyable to listen to, but again he's on the more reserved end of the glam vocalist spectrum. It still works and the backing band is genuinely very solid. I find the mixing here slightly weird, everything seems almost bloated, and at times, it drowns out the vocals. It's not that big of a deal though. I also think the album gets a bit repetitive nearing the end, but overall, still dug quite a bit of what was offered here. It's a solid early 70s rock album that I think I'd get more out of on repeat listens. These are just my initial thoughts after all.
Pretty good.
Generic
It was okay.
Should have give yesterday’s Deep Purple a 3 instead of a 2.
3 stars
Fun classic rock. But I probably won't come back to it.
I've never heard the album in its entirety. Hot Love brings back memories of teenage parties long gone and fills me with a little nostalgia. I also find the music a bit boring. 3/5
Muzikaal maar een beetje saai en niet bijzonder.
I don't think Marc Bolan was ever taken as seriously as he wanted to be (partly down to his over-inflated sense of his own worth) but even so, this is a lively collection with Bolan's slightly fey and ethereal presence at the microphone coupled with a distinctive guitar playing style.
A bit bland/generic beatles in solo
Bellino, per ora è 3
Best nice, maar of het hangen blijft
Alleraardigst wel. Maar niet mijn smaaku
It was good. Although the more I listened the more samey it became...
Interesting but pretty slow. Nothing to write home about. Bang a gong is a song I didn’t know was by them. The lead singer was deathly afraid of cars and never learned to drive and then died in a car accident at 29. Probably the most interesting thing about T. Rex.
Not my taste, but I can see where it was going. Decent listen.
I went in really only knowing "Get It On", which strikes me as a classic "white guy" rock song. Not bad, but I wasn't expecting much. This was better than I expected... yet it's still just one of those "7 out of 10" albums, of which there are many, so I'm rounding down to 3 stars. I liked it more than expected though, so at least there's that. But I will never go out of my way to listen to it again.
Bang a Gong is a classic but not much else stuck with me on this one
Back to back classic rock type albums for us, and they're hitting me about the same. I've never really known this artist or album, but obviously "Bang a Gong" is familiar. Aside from that, some other enjoyable tunes too. Overall, very competent, solid rock album. Nothing too memorable, but it's good. Favorite tracks: Bang a Gong, Mambo Sun, Monolith, Lean Woman Blues. Album art: Really love this one, bold and powerful. Ghostly, electric outline of a man, his guitars, and a tower of amps. Just an extremely effective and memorable cover, even moreso than the music. 3.5/5
Dirty, sweet, and still banging that gong over 50 years later. Enjoyable listen. Mean while I’m still thinking… (2.9*s)
Surprisingly fun
It sounds great and there’s a stylishness to it that’s appealing. However, it’s hard for me to hear this as anything other than glam-era Bowie but with worse songs sung by a far less compelling singer.
This album had some good moments, but said moments got lost in how every song sounded the same.
I was only related to the song "Get It On" 'cause i've listened to it a few times. The album has good songs, good vocals, good rhytms. Yeah... it'll pass.
This was alright, nothing really grabbed me.
Sometimes an album just irritates me and I don’t know of more of the blame lies with the music or with me. Either way, that was the case here. 2.5 rounded up
Another album where I can appreciate the influence on other bands I like, but overall just not for me. 2.5/5
It's very bluesy at times. Lean Woman Blues especially, but it's good if you like that kind of thing. Bang a Gong is the big hit, but Girl is a nice one too. Everything kind of just plods along.
decently good
Heralded as the ushering in of the glam rock movement - and I can see why
It was fine, didn’t really grab my attention
Ok, i guess
Overall -I dig, another rock album that has great blues. I enjoyed it but wasn’t amazed Mambo Sun -loving the guitar, hating the singing Cosmic Dance -damn is that pedal on their guitar? Is the guitar being pushed backwards through the amp?? Jeepster -ok kinda bluesy? Lean Woman Blues -broooo the fucking bluess Bang a Gong -OOOOOOOOOH The Motivator -again with the blues
You can’t be mad about an album like this. It’s well written well played and has a decent amount of variety. Nothing all that special about it either in my opinion and seems pretty lack luster in the broader scheme of this list.
This album was much better than I expected going in since I only knew "Bang a Gong" prior. It has a similar vibe throughout, a bit repetitive but listenable. I didn't really know what kind of music T. Rex was making but I wouldn't really consider this glam rock. It's fine.
T. Rex brings the swagger on this album. I'm down for some early glam rock. Can def hear some Bowie likeness. Been looking to add to my collection but always a high price tag. Belongs in the list indeed.
Very enjoyable solid album. Really dug Mambo Sun and Bang a Gong is a well-known classic. Some very fine deep cuts to accompany. I dug the vibe pretty much the whole way through. Never knew T Rex was such a big influence on glam-rock roots. What a great slice from a band I only was exposed to 1 song of previously. 3.41 stars
One of the better mixed albums on this list. I really enjoyed listening to this, though nothing stood out as exceptional at the same time.
T-Rex.. why do I feel like I should know this artist? I like it. Sounds kinda like oldies and rock mashed together. Hm, the most popular song on spotify by him is Bang a Gong, which is also on this album. So we'll see if I recognize it. I did not recognize it. BUT now I know why he sounded familiar! Quentin Tarantino used the song Jeepster in Death Proof!! Thanx Quentin. Oh! Get it on! I know that one too. meh, 3 stars.
Listened to this album a lot when I was younger and enjoyed it. I think I liked it more then than now. Still a good album. Favorites Cosmic Dancer and Bang a Gong.
I only knew Bang a Gone (Get It On) from this band, and honestly I never liked it that much. I was hoping their other stuff was better and more glam rock like Sweet or Slade, but this album was just too...mellow, and just kind of mediocre overall. Finally, on the very last track of the album (Rip Off) they wake up and start glamming it up. Why wasn't more of the album like this?
Was a fun listen but if felt it became kind of repetitive
Decent album, with some groovy themes throughout. Nothing too memorable really, other than the one song nearly everyone has heard for some reason or another.
Good album. Pretty chill. Kind of like Steely Dan with a fuzz box...
early 70’s glam rock. catchy songs. very strong bowie vibes at times. quality listen. highlights: “monolith”, “get it on”, “rip off”
That was nice. This was one I had as a cassette back in the day, and it was good then, and I think it's better now! If you listen to any classic rock radio station, all you will hear from this is Bang a gong. But they really should play Life's a gas or Rip off, or some of the other gems on this one.
Was surprised by Get it On, great but seemed outta nowhere
2.5 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Muy divertido. 3/5.
A couple of good songs. All in all, don’t think this is one I’ll revisit
A nice chill vibe
I never understood the appeal of this album. Sounds like a bunch of acoustic hippie bullshit with some electric guitars on top. “Jeepster” and “Bang a Gong (Get it on)” are the notable exceptions.
Bang the gong. Get it on.
Aika hyvä 3.5/5 Jep
Fun album…kinda weird noises from the lead singer at times…groovy bluesy stuff. Not really my thing though.
The closest thing to my taste in music but didn’t really grab my attention enough to listen to the lyrics
I really enjoyed lean woman blues, bang a gong (get it on), and monolith. I loved the instrumental elements and I liked how it was a softer rock album than some of the others I’ve listened to. Overall, I probably wouldn’t listen to it again front to back but I loved this style of rock
Not bad but unsure I’ll listen again
idk probablemente le ocupo dar otra oportunidad
Nice vibe here. "Cosmic Dancer" is lyrically fun. And it has that Lou Reed 50s-but-make-it-punk energy.
Holds up ok for early 70s blues, odd song would sound good
2 good songs, others were eh
Just like everyone else that was alive in 1971, I'm familiar with Get it On and thought of T Rex as a one hit wonder. This album goes a long way to dispel that notion. Although a bit simplistic at times, it showcases a breadth and versatility that I did not expect. This is a solid album that doesn't need to make any excuses fir being included on the list.
Get It On is definitely the highlight of the album. Okay bluish feel to the rest of the songs. I can understand why it was popular in its day.
You can probably skip this one. Just listen to get it on and imagine 10 variations of that. Done. Repetitive but fun 7/10
Fun 70s rock. I liked the surreal lyrics and the groove.
It was an alright album overall, didn't really feel the glam rock until it came to the sixth track with Get It On, that has been heard in a bunch of media since it's inception. The whole album is a bit all over the place in terms of style but somehow manages to pull it together in a somewhat cohesive manner. Best: Jeepster Worst: Monolith
Inumin.
Fair to middling. A couple hopping songs, a couple I recognized, mostly background noise. Bang a gong!
