Reviews (page 7 of 13)
The entire albums feels as though it as sung at 3am in all it's glory. I feel as thogh i could listen to this album lying in the dark doing nothing, and my mind would never drift. Overall a very solid melow rock album
Yet again T. Rex surprises me with how great it is. Just a fun vibe and sound over the whole album . 4/5
quite nice, a taste of fresh stuff from some time ago
Mambo Sun is a very call yet soothing vibe. 4/5 Cosmic dancer had amazing vocals in the background and the guitar reminded me of exactly the 70s. 4.5/10 Jeepster was alright but the lyrics for me didn’t really resonate. 3/5 Monolith intro reverberated into my soul. The guitar throughout as well as the lyrics. 5/5 Lean Woman Blues was good at capturing the feel of the blues yet with a more rock style that fit the 70s. 3.5/5 Get it on perfectly encapsulates what the rock and upbeat feel of a country drive. 4.5/5 Planet Queen felt very rhythmic and smooth while also having a nice higher voice and showing off the range. 3.5/5 Girl takes on the slower side and sadder side of the album comparative to the rock side. The guitar in the background makes it. 4/5 The Motivator held good vocals and better guitar, especially the mini solo. 4/5 Life’s A Gas was a lot slower than I thought it’d be for the name. 3.5/5 Rip Off felt slightly repetitive coming back to the song title over and over I’ll be frank. 2.5/5 Hot Love - A Side reminded me of the more upbeat songs from this time. An ode to a girl yet catchy and slightly repetitive but not annoyingly. 3.5/5 Woodland Rock - B Side reminds me of much older times, such as older rock and the 50s and Elvis. Not expected in this album. 3/5 The King of The Mountain Cometh - B Side had a good part it kept coming back to that was an incredibly vibe to come back to over and over and the feel of the song felt like you were pushing in and waning back with each sentence. 5/5
Overall a good album, but I never knew they played "Bang a Gong (Get it On)"
In many ways this album reminds me of a love child between Bowie and Lou Reed or Iggy Pop. There is an effortless feel that the latter engender mixed with some of the eccentricities and strong song-writing / composition of the former. Early standout is Cosmic Dancer, which is a such a pretty song with the string flourishes accompanying wistful lyrics and a tight drum progression. Monolith is another that features layering of choral vocals around some slithering guitar and a slow RnR. Bang a Gong is the one that everyone knows and its obvious why. This song is a low-key jam. Fuzzy bass tone with smoky vocals and a chorus everyone can hang onto. Such an effortlessly cool song. This was a lot stronger album than I ever would have expected. I mean Bang a Gong is a cool song, but I did not expect T. Rex to show as much depth across a whole LP. I will definitely come back to this one at some point. 4 / 5
2 songs in and I love it. Cosmic Dancer specifically rocks. Definitely heard this recently on a Bowie documentary (which makes sense given the significance of this album to Glam Rock). Had to make sure Apple Music was working correctly with Jeepster. Just started and ended choppy. I'm sure it was an artistic decision but meh. Next two songs are good but nothing special. I have heard Bang a Gong a shit ton of times in my life and don't think I ever knew the name or band. Jam of a song. The sax is awesome. Planet Queen is also a jam. Love the fuzzzzz on Life's a Gas. Was boppin to Rip Off. Very solid album I had never heard of. I'll be back for more Cosmic Dancer.
C'était cool, excellent glam rock.
Yeah good album. Didn't love any of it, but liked pretty much all of it. Fav track: Life's a Gas 3.5
I've been looking forward to this album for a while, and not just because it has a fucking iconic album cover. I've been surprised by how much I enjoy glam music. I'd always thought of it as being superficial in nature before I'd actually listened to it. However, I've really enjoyed the glam that I've gotten on this list, especially the 70s stuff. This album is no exception. It's more mellow than I thought it would be, but it's good throughout. The production is excellent. It really lets you hear the little details of the album. It feels very intimate. The vocal harmonies are a nice touch, though Marc Bolan's vocals always steal the show. It's really interesting that they were a folk band previously. You can definitely hear that influence on the album 4/5
har fått sansen får denna t.rexen i da sista
*Get It On* is the typically "oh that's who sings that song" song, but I'm really feeling *Monolith.* 19 September 2023
T. Rex were a bit on the whimsical side for me, but can't deny this is a great album. Favourite: Planet Queen.
Yeah, great. Such a distinctive sound. MB was a great pop star, and the songs are good.
slay
Lots of good tunes here!
Good album, just some nice bread and butter songs. Sounds amazing and loved the background vocals. But nothing really mind blowing, just some good music. 7/10
Very good
Another favorite album of mine. Another one where I wish half stars could be rewarded because it’s just shy of a 5.
I started off thinking I wasn’t going to like this. The lead singer’s voice was grating and I found it very annoying. For reasons I can’t explain, though, this band grew on me as I listened more. Now, I really think I’m going to listen to this one some more.
Production really holds up! Very glam. Catchy, cool, and iconic. Cosmic Dancer is the biggest surprise to me... really nice song. A lot of similar sounds going on, but it is super solid. 4/5
Delightful.
Classic
Mambo Sun // Cosmic Dancer // Jeepster // Monolith // Get It On // The Motivator // 4-4.5/5
Feels a little like early glam...
Big fan of trex and Bolan for that matter. This is an all timer for me, but I'd like to address some negative reviews. This is trexs most pop-y album. It seems like the payoff IS missing from some of these tracks. I feel mark played ot safe here and got what he wanted. Earlier tracks are less polished and more heartfelt
Fun album
First listen to a John solo album, and he maintains the great quality.
Not bad, didn't really pop for me but easy to listen to
A funky rocky jam session.
Didn't realise there were so many stone cold classics on this. Great album
Distinct sound
Fíla þetta glam rokk.
Super buena guitarra 8/10
Ate
hmmmm idk, love it or no
Hårdrock. Över förväntan. Några bra låtar som jag skulle kunna lyssna på.
Groovy, funky, psych rock. Enjoyed it
You can feel some Beatles influence, but also hear the contributions he made to David Bowie and Sweet among others.
Dunno what made me really like this album. The charisma, probably. And the great melodies. And instrumentation. Damn, it just does lot really well.
Chill
favs - there was a time / raw ramp / electric boogie - mambo sun - monolith - planet queen - life's a gas - woodland rock
This is a good album full of good songs, all of which are outshone by Cosmic Dancer, which is excellent. But the rest is still good. Best songs: Cosmic Dancer Worst song: Rip It Off
The album starts out very laid-back with Mambo Sun. Cosmic Dancer reminds me of Bowie. Reminds me of Five Years from Ziggy Stardust. Not the biggest on Jeepster, doesn’t appeal to me. Monolith was better. Lean Woman was vibey. Loving Bang a Gong. Planet Queen is even better. Girl even BETTER? Loving the acoustic tracks on this. Ironic considering the name of the album. The Motivator is nice, so is Life’s A Gas. Rip Off is an alright album closer. I liked the album overall.
Me gusta el estilo y el nombre T rex
Enjoyed listening to this album. Went by fast. Had hints of The Beatles about them, though Get It On was fun to relisten to after a while!
Nice consistent album, with no particular weak songs. Bluesy, with a lot of backing vocals and strings. The guitar and drum fills keeps the songs interesting. The vocals doesn’t do much for me, though. I haven’t found a glam rock album that I really love yet. Maybe it just takes some getting use to.
A pretty good record. Lots of great songs filled with great guitar riffs and vocal performance from Marc Bolan. Honestly don't really have much to say except this record was a very pleasent listen. favourite tracks: Cosmic Driver, Jeepster, Lean Woman Blues, Get It On and Planet Queen. Lest favourite tracks: Mambo Sun and Life's A Gas, didn't really enjoy them.
Such a cool funky album. I love this one, even upon first listen years ago! The songs feel like jams but work very well! 8,5 out of 10
Intersring. Worth rehearing
The movie Longlegs opens with a title card with the lyrics "You're dirty and sweet, oh yeah Well, you're slim and you're weak You've got the teeth of the hydra upon you You're dirty, sweet and you're my girl" from Bang a Gong (Get It On) off of this album. Not really sure what it had to do with the movie other than part of the movie taking place in the 70's but neverthless, Longlegs is now one of my favorite horror movies. This album on the other hand is also really quite good! It really exemplifies what I love about 70's rock n roll. It never becomes too much. It never outstays its welcome. Really well produced and everyone in the band is clearly playing at top form. It's not anything I've never heard out of 70's rock but it's well done. I don't think it's aged as well as some of their contemporaries like Bowie but that may be partially due to their frontman's death. They may not have had the chance to really take off yet. Anyway, I remember this album selling a lot and I always meant to listen to it. I'm glad I did! 4
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Mambo sun, Cosmic dancer, Get it on
unsurprisingly i liked this a lot
Surprise. I really enjoyed every bit of this, despite my lack of love for Brit pop/rock.
This was a really solid album! I totally understand why these guys are known for "Get It On", but so much of the rest of their music falls into obscurity, which is too bad. You can tell that this album is a pioneering album among glam rock. It has all of those essential elements, and yet there's still a psychedelic crunchiness to this; it exists somewhere between David Bowie and The Beatles -- the straddling of two decades of sound. I never would have guessed T. Rex to be pioneers in this space, or that this wasn't their original sound. Super enjoyable! 3.5
Enjoyable listen, and some classic tracks and guitar work.
Galm rock pretty much perfected. Really need more time with it.
I love this album. For some reason, on Apple Music, the song 'Jeepster' is not available which is a crime. What is Electric Warrior without Jeepster? Anyway - love it.
Exhibits A and B: "You're built like a car / You got a hubcap diamond star halo" ...and... "Just like a car you're pleasing to behold / I'll call you Jaguar if I may be so bold" ...pretty much sum this album up. Those lyrics are at once wonderful, stupid and nonsensical. It's pure blarney, but of the most addictive kind. And the music? Glam rock, yes, but glancing over its shoulder to the bongo'd-out sounds of Donovan and his ilk. There's a lazy, strolling feel to these songs - the biggies have it, but so does album fodder like 'Planet Queen' and 'Life's a Gas'. Do you like Marc Bolan's elfin bleat? I've lived with this music for a while and find it just another weird facet in this idiosyncratic collection of wigged-out star-bops. Just the ticket.
Really great considering where rock was at when they wrote it
One of my college favorites and first vinyl purchases. T. Rex is completely underrated in the grand story of rock legends, but I still love Marc Bolan’s ability to move across genres and styles seamlessly. This album holds up, even if gets kind of stale after 6 or 7 tracks.
Classic album, a bit generic, but Bang a Gong gets it up to 4 stars by itself
groovyy i just wish there was more of an overarching concept
4/5 I liked T. Rex last time the band popped up, and I liked them this time too! This band sounds like what I imagine when I think "Rock Band." The music is so smooth, and listenable. I really like the singer's voice. Overall just a really good experience.
My first
Fucking excellent
Não conhecia a banda mas com certeza ja escutado algumas das músicas do álbum, excelente trabalho, guitarra e vocais distintos com músicas que misturam estilos.
A fun, sometimes laidback, listen
Solid classic rock album, with a bit of David Bowie glam, Rolling Stones driving blues, and Hendrix guitar licks. The singing isn’t my favorite and there are some throw away tracks, but it’s overall not bad
Never listened to T.rex before, obviously recognised get it on. Really enjoyed this one, such a cool vibe and for 1971 it’s very impressive, Marc Bolans voice is so cool and uses it really well.
ganz chillig
Not bad...chill 70s vibe
Really fun album. I’ve never listened to any of these songs other than the two hits.
Part of what I like about T.Rex is it's all so economical - there are no wasted notes or superfluous parts. On paper these songs should be bog-standard, basic rock 'n' roll tunes, but between Marc Bolan's breezy vocals, the punchy production, some simple but impactful chord changes and some well deployed strings and horns, they're transformed into something a bit magical. Effortless cool and swagger.
Great album lots of fun!
8/10
7/10. Pretty good. Reminded me of Ziggy Stardust in parts, but not nearly as good overall.
A bit better than The Slider since I like Bang a Gong and Mambo Sun. 7/10
Really like this album. New to me.
Okay, so this was miles better than The Slider on basically all parameters. It still feels slightly like generic late 60s/early 70s psych/glam rock, but the songwriting is solid. 'Mambo Sun' kicks it all of with a pulsating rhythm that is groovy as hell, and 'Cosmic Dancer' is a great tune. Of course, 'Get It On' is a stone cold classic. It sounds formulaic but mainly because it somewhat defined the formula.
Great album. Grabs your attention and doesn't let go.
Not very familiar with this band, but I really like the sound and vibe on this album. Great, easy listening rock music!
Kende deze band alleen qua naam, maar zitten wat nummers bij die eigenlijk wel heel bekend zijn. Klinkt modern voor zijn tijd
Love the glam rock - it's a fun listen & Bang a Gong bangs! Very listenable, lots of attitude, love it!
Never heard of T. Rex before but definitely have heard Get It On. I can see why this album is influential. It has a really cool sound. Have to listen more to really get the lyrics and themes.
4.5
J’aime beaucoup T. Rex, mais ce n’est pas mon album préféré. Par contre, la chanson Cosmic Dancer est pratiquement un chef-d’œuvre
As one of the most representative acts of the glam rock, T Rex is a charming band and this album is an example of that. I don’t know if it’s the voice delivery or song structures, but each track on the album is special. Even those that use the typical blues formula sound renovated, fresh. Cosmic dancer is one of the songs I would like to be played at my funeral.
Very pleasing and exciting at the same time, Bolan's smooth vocals and the warm overdriven guitar just sound beautiful together, and the tunes are very good.
felt like a rising dancing sun! joyous, 7/10
As someone who isn't typically a fan of psychedelic rock I was pleasantly surprised by this album and will definitely be checking out more T. Rex because this album absolutely slaps. Best tracks: Jeepster, Lean Woman Blues, Girl, Motivator, and Rip Off.
Help
Good album.
Highlight: Get It On
Całkiem przyjemne, Get it on najlepsze.
Classic, fun, bouncy rock. Get it on!
2 трека прикольные, в общем не очень
I went back and looked at my review of the last T. Rex. In that review, I admitted my bias having read their story and about their connection to the Beatles. This time, remembering how much I liked that other album maybe got me a little too excited. This album is still great, and of course "Band the Gong" is them (I never knew who sang that song but always loved it). Still, it was a little disappointing based on the high expectations I had for it. That's not their fault. I want to give this a 4 because I think it's deserving. But I also want to give it a 3 because it's not as good as the other one (which I rated a 4). Screw it. Low 4 (not to be confused with the High 4 last time).
Very impressive. You can hear glam rock finding a voice track by track. Cosmic Dancer is so hypnotizing, I had to listen a couple more times after the album was done.
Didn’t realize how early they formed and released albums.
I didn't know much about T. Rex before this 1001 challenge, and the first album I got here disappointed me since they have a nice name and didn't reach my expectations. Now, this is different: A fantastic release with almost every song in the right place, excellent songs, and lyrics...I was fully into the album during the listening...I expected moe of this T. Rex in the list.
I truly enjoyed this album.....fantastic guitar work.....quite unexpexted...
I like it
Thoroughly enjoyed. Early 70s was a golden era of music without a doubt.
I liked this. I've never been a big fan of Get It On but I've recently doing I like a lot of their other music.
This album is the start of like 85% of the cool shit that happened in rock music after 1971. Guitar tone is absolute fire. The raw, back-to-basics sound is filled out with some uniquely odd backing vocals and instrumental flourishes. It’s a fun record. I don’t love every song (Cosmic dancer…) but most every track is a good time.
3.5/5
I'm not a big fan of T. Rex but really enjoyed listening to this album.
I've had a vague interest in T. Rex for a while now, so I'm happy to finally give an album of theirs a listen. I expected to like it, and I did. I was jamming for most of it. I don't like it enough to give it a 5, but it's still a really good album. I wonder if I'd like their other albums. My favourite song was Planet Queen.
Ai että miten voikin olla tyylikkään jytäävää ja silti kevyttä ja swengaavaa samaan aikaan. Oikein hyvä levy. Go Bolan! 4/5
Sitä parempaa klassikkorockailua. Sopivasti rouhea, sopivasti letkeä, 4/5
Like it!! Especially Monolith and Mamba sun but honestly all the songs were good
T.Rex are glam rock gods. Some of my favorites are on here, but there are some sleepers too (which are not as great, in my opinion). Overall good album.
Not the best album by T Rex but very good.
Im a sucker for this pop, glam 70s style of music, so mambo sun has this record on the right foot. interesting that the next 2 tracks are more downbeat. Bang With A Gong is such a bop. the rest of the album is that sot of midtempo meh.
was expecting a load more 70s high pitched shite, but this was much better than that. the production and mixing is really good, there's nothing harsh in there, it's all at the right levels and it goes to show that decent production can improve a non-entity of a track. admittedly this does have some very famous songs on which is nice, but on the whole an enjoyable listen.
Usually I can’t stand “glam rock” but this was really good! I really liked the bluesy feel that spans the whole record.
first listen classic stuff
Probably T Rex’s finest moment - an album jam packed with hits and floor stompers, slamming into the seventies with glam.
****
Very fun album. Not sure I’d call it “good” but I liked listening to it. Good energy but I think it’s more enjoyable in smaller doses.
It's fascinating how this album released so close to the '50s and '60s, because it feels much newer than that. You can hear the influences it takes from rockabilly and old school soul, but it's then infused with modern glam, pop, a little bit of art and progressive rock, and some country. At the end of it, you get a record that sounds both like T. Rex's contemporaries like David Bowie, and newer bands like INXS. Achiveing timelessness like that is always a feat in my book so I enjoyed this a lot. Makes sense that a dinosaur would come up with a classic like this, amazing job Mr. Rex! Favorite tracks: Planet Queen and the surprisingly familiar Get It On
Dug this! Didn’t know Trex, everything about it suggested it would be cheese city but solid album!
Cool.
I really enjoyed it, but it was nothing that I would call spectacular. Very good is where I'm at with it, and would gladly listen again.
A wonderful band. Lots of great songs. Unique.
Funky and enjoyable, and not just the singles.
I liked this! I've always loved "Bang a Gong (Get it On)," so it was nice having a whole album of similar songs.
Perfect for a Saturday pottering around
I like it! I knew one song already, it reminds me of what my mom would listen to.
Very cool hippie rock
I'll probably look back one day and regret giving this a 4 instead of a 3, but it just feels right.
Great record, lots of fun
I'm still playing catch-up but immediately turned around and put this album on again. To me it felt like walking through the Rock & Roll HOF and watching as genres and styles slowly shift and form into something that feels new and unrecognizable on its own but is clearly rooted in the musical past. These guys couldn't have known that a decade later Poison would be doing the 'Unskinny Bop' but here you have some dudes with great hair doing a song about sex with a hard-rocking hook. Sure some of the lyrics here still have that late 60's acid influence, but you can easily look at Sammy Haggar-era Van Halen's 'Love Walks In' and see a clear kindred connection. I mean is this the first hair album? It's all here - sexually charged songs (had to chuckle at the not even a little subtle golden cat/velvet hat lyrics in 'The Motivator'), blues riffs, drug-fueled lyrics - just promote a screaming electric guitar to co-lead vocalist and trade LSD for cocaine and heroine and you've got a rock-solid 80's hair metal album! Overall I didn't think there were any clunkers here. I appreciated the love-lorn desperation of 'Lean Woman Blues' and the laugh-it-off what-could-of-have-beens of its coda 'Life's a Gas'. 'Mambo Sun' was 60's funk fun, 'Cosmic Dancer' felt like vintage psychedelic Bowie (and not even a poor man's version), 'Jeepster' gets your feet tapping with its get-down riffs, 'Monolith' soothed like an acid-fueled lullaby, and 'Rip Off' got grungy as a proto-punk finale. Coming in knowing only 'Get It On' this album really impressed me, enough that I'm looking at the CD on Amazon as I write this - I think it could have a place in the rotation on this long road-trip to Montana I have in a few weeks!
Loved how it opened, was immediately pleased by the energy/taken with it (Mambo Sun). Loved the general vibes / upbeat rhythms. Exactly what I reach for in the morning. Could easily see myself windows down on a road trip blasting this as I speed by cornfields (the next stop on the road trip is near Peoria, Illinois.) Stand outs: Cosmic Dancer, Bang a Gong obviously. Cosmic Dancer felt like Bowie’s Space Oddity.
Much better, grooving, more focused than their debut album.
very good sound, much better than I imagined it to be.
Firmly rooted in the bluz, this hard glam rock masterpiece ages well.
Not bad, though not much variety. Fun sound though.
In some ways this is more artifice than art, Marc Bolan jumping on a trend. It paid off and there are some stonking tunes on this album.
Love me some T. Rex! One of their best. 4 stars.
Good
Although Bang a Gong was the most popular song on this album by far, there were still a lot of great tracks. They definitely have that late 70's sound that blends funk, rock, and acoustic guitar
Quite a few good songs on here Mambo Sun is my fav
Good.
Pretty good overall. Great guitar sound and some banger tracks. There is a bit of monotony in the melodys from track to track.
19th of August year 2022
Relaxte pop-rock-muziek. Ik vind het nummer "Cosmic Dancer" wel heel leuk en "Get It On" kent ook iedereen. De rest van het album is ook goed te luisteren. ****
I quite enjoyed this whole album. While I'd heard one or two songs off it, overall it's got great guitar and rhythm and the vocals were great too.
Theres a lot of god stuff on here
I love the interview Spotify has with Marc Bolan on this album. He talks about how it's simple and direct. He felt like there wasn't much time to communicate with people; time is fleeting, so let's just get to it. Six years later, he dies in a car crash. It's a very charismatic collection of tunes. I didn't really know many of the songs before this, so it was a real treat to listen to the entire piece.
well paced album that pickups up when it starts to get a little tedious. punctuated with some excellent bops too. 72/100 gecs
Great album, on par with Bowie's Aladdin Sane period.
Not very electronic, but really good
There were some heaters. Very glam rocky.
Surprising enjoyable. Upbeat and funky.
recording quality stands out. drums are super punchy, really a lot of headroom. great songs, not all the same sounding. sometimes zz top feeling, sometimes pink floyd feeling. guitar tones are chefs kiss.
So bluesy and bouncy! I’ve heard more of the songs than I realized - had Cosmic Dancer & Get It On already. Is is fair to say this album is more music than lyrics? I’m not even sure I could fully explain what I mean by that…but it feels true lol.
Die ‘swing’ in de nummers van T.Rex kan mij altijd wel bekoren!
I love T. Rex and their distinctive vocals and fun beats. Cosmic Dancer and Get It On have been long time favorites of mine. Some of their songs definitely are very similar sounding, but as I enjoy them, I'm going to ignore that!
p252. 1971. 4 stars Fey, but muscular. Absolutely fabulous early 70s glam rock. As with all things Bolan, lyrically suspect, but the riffs and band and production are still fantastic. Some filler, especially on the 2nd side, but if you can't dance to at least one track on this you are officially dead. "Just like a car/You're pleasing to behold/I'll call you Jaguar/If I may be so bold" "Girl I'm just a vampire for your love/And I'm gonna SUCK ya"
This one surprised me. I imagined that it would all sound like Bang a Gong, but it kinda didn't....but also, it kinda did....I thought that I kinda liked it.
Great glam rock
I like this more than The Slider for sure. "Cosmic Dancer" is a classic and "Bang a Gong (Get It On)" is an all time classic. "Monolith" wa a somewhat deep cut on this album that I vibed with and "The Motivator" was the same way. Pretty good album.
Reminded me how good Jeepster and Get it on were.
I guess I didn't really understand what Glam rock was but this is the definition. Faves: Get It On, Cosmic Dancer, Jeepster
Ahh yes more T Rex! I absolutely loved this album and has one of my fave songs of all times 'Life's A Gas' . T Rex makes me feel so nostalgic and almost a bit emotional, I'm not sure why, of a time I wasn't even a part of! Its all just quite light hearted but reminiscent of good times
Again, a very good album that for some reason I've never listened to before.
Marc Bolan really was terribly good at what he did.
Música animada, pero similar a otras
this was the rock music too
Definitely a bit better than i expected. Channels a lot of a david bowie vibe, with a restrained rock sound that has a good vocal hook. I could pass on Jeepster, but the rest was pretty solid
good stuff trex! bang a gong!
Really great. Especially liked King of the Mountain Cometh, Woodland Rock, Get It On and Cosmic Dancer, very solid 4
The first ever glam rock record definitely deserves a nod of acknowledgment. Strangely enough, I’ve heard so many of these songs already and didn’t know it. Love that.
Really enjoyable album, quintessential T.Rex sound but tracks don't get boring. Plenty of hits too.
On previous list.
I liked it, an album that feels like The Beatles meet Bowie which is a pretty good mix. Features the classic Bang a Gong but other tracks like Mambo Sun, Monolith and then Cosmic Dancer that just linger in my noggin.
I really liked this album! there's the one super famous song, but the lesser known ones were really good too.
Many songs sound similar, but definitely a classic
Muito bom.
Fun and cool. I did like the other T-rex album better I think, but there are some tracks on here I will return to
very good album, unique vibe, interesting instruments and awesome vocals, deserved 4
j'ai cru que c'était les mêmes dinosaures que ceux qu'on avait déjà écouté et j'étais donc très rebutée à l'idée d'écouter cet album alors qu'en fait non c'était bien 👍
More bluesy and versatile than I was expecting
Now synonymous with the birth of glam-rock, "Electric Warrior" was derided by fans of the band at the time of release. Bolan had sold out! He'd gone pop! There was no substance to this! And he was DANCING! People could (and can) say whatever they like, but the bottom line is that this has always been an immediate, hooky album: I can't imagine listening without bopping along. Sometimes, a sell-out can still be fun and it might even be ludicrously influential on generations of musicians. Lyrically, Bolan has not lost his whimsical edge from "A Beard of Stars" and beyond: there are allusions to the universe in someone's hair, planets and stars, shadowless horses, alligator rain... it's all still there. It's the sheen of slick, electric guitar parts, conventional chord progressions and poppy hooks which marks the biggest departure from Bolan's earlier work, but it all pays off in a wonderful package of glam rock. "Bang a Gong (Get it On)" is of course the big hitter here, and it's wonderful, a glam piece-de-resistance. Fifty years on, it's still one of the sexiest songs around (certainly that Rick Wakeman ever added his keys to). "Jeepster" and "Mambo Sun" are also highlights. My only fault with this album- and blocking it from the full five stars- is its slightly repetitive nature, as though there were four or so tracks that fit the band's glam mould and they were essentially rehashed. "The Motivator" is a wholesale remake of "Bang a Gong", and "Planet Queen" is very close to "Mambo Sun". I adore both "Girl" and "Life's a Gas", but there's no denying they're very similar in arrangement and tone. More material like "Rip Off"- the most idiosyncratic track here with its shouted verses and rising sung-through bridge- would have helped elevate the album even further. Final personal note that will always leave a special place in my heart for "Electric Warrior": when I left home for the last time, my dad drove me to my first flat with this album playing. "Cosmic Dancer" playing as we went through the mountains at sunset will be forever etched in my memory.
Yeah, great band, great sound!
I've had this CD in my collection for a while now. It's not a favorite of mine, but it's a classic album everybody should hear at least once. Solid, consistent album overall. This is top-tier glam rock!
Mér finnst það fáránleg tilhugsun að Bolan og Bowie hafi einhvern tímann verið taldir jafningjar, eða Bolan betri (gisp!), en þetta er mjög flott plata. Sum lögin eru hreint út sagt ótrúlega góð, en vissulega filler inn á milli.
It's odd how T Rex almost sound like a parody at times of the very genre that they embody. Still, it's all glorious fun.
Muy bueno
Good album not great
Was pretty good
Classic rock
This had enough good tracks to drag it up a star but very hit and miss.
Damn good glam rock with a couple of amazing songs sprinkled throughout
It's weird that this is the album that came up. The big sone from it, "Get It On" has a number of people on it who I enjoy. One of whom passed away the other day, Ian McDonald. That song in and of itself, is almost enough to buy the album. It is perfectly positioned, unlike "Bridge Over Troubled Water", which is right at the beginning of the album. This is right in the middle, so you have to listen to a good deal of the album, which is pretty good glam rock. He really gives a lot of sex appeal to those songs. They smolder a LOT. But it's "Get It On" that really sells it, without it, the album just doesn't go as far for me. It's funny how that one song does that, isn't it? Definitely something I will be going back to.
So much of this list is about pioneering a genre. If you don't know the history and are only going on sound, sometimes you just won't get it. That being said, I enjoyed the sound from the get go. Mambo Sun was super cool, and I immediately noticed how it took some of the 60's pop rock I know (Strawberry Alarm Clock, Donovan, etc.) and brought it into a new harder rock light. Now knowing this is the first true glam rock album, I can also see why so many of the sounds seem to be echoed in later releases. Mambo Sun feels like it has been reimagined in modern rock by bands like the Black Keys (the Brothers album). Cosmic Dancer and Planet Queen sound like they would be inspiration to Bowie - both in the sound (pseudo acoustic with complicated electric and multi-instrumental layers) and in the spacey fictional lyrics. Ditto for Monolith, except it has less of the acoustic sound. Jeepster and Get it On (really the whole album) sounds like it fueled bands & songs like Sweet & Ballroom Blitz. Given that I only knew Get it On coming in (a stone cold classic; loved it since I first heard it around 8 years old), this was a great new listening experience.
It's just a classic, isn't it? Glamorous, rocking and strangely, very English.
I was familiar with T. Rex in name only prior to this. Well, and I knew the song Bang a Gong (Get It On), but I wouldn't have been able to put a name/artist to the song before. I loved this album! Glam rock perfection. I've already revisited songs, and I'm sure I'll listen to more from them. Marc Bolan WAS T.Rex, and was so influential on many of the artists I grew up listening to (the Smith's being a major one). I listened to the Expanded and Remastered version on Spotify, but did skip about halfway through the interview track. The Wiki page was interesting- almost all the band members died from reasons other than natural causes - Bolan in a car accident (girlfriend driving, she survived) right before he turned 30. Another member died of asphyxiation from a cocktail cherry, another in a car accident. Lots of times, that one song you know from a band is the only good one. But if you're like me and only know Bang a Gong, T. Rex has a lot more to offer. They're worth the listen.
Weird in a delightful way. Rewards multiple listens. I love the sound of this band. Best track: Cosmic Dancer
Great classic album, no bad tracks. Gave it 4 instead of 5 because some of the songs sound fairly similar.
4.5
Melodic, simple-but-sexy guitar rock. Not sure what the X Factor is, but Bolan had it.
Good stuff, surprised with such sounds from the 70s!
1971. Get It On. Cosmic Dancer, Jeepster
Hier bedienten sich also Foxygen und Devandra Banhart wohl auch ausgiebig. Stroke of British Rock‘n‘Roll Genius 4.1
Pretty good
mola
Yes!
Cool music. Sounds like early Beatles mixed with Bowie. Good cruising music
Blues rock. Muy bueno.
Classic Rock, a bit more mellow. Definitely reminds me of the 1970's. I've been digging classic rock lately, so this album works well for me. Much better than Butthole Surfers.
Very impressive. You can hear glam rock finding a voice track by track. Cosmic Dancer is so hypnotizing, I had to listen a couple more times after the album was done.
Yes, we can boogie.
J'ai coché quasiment la moitié de l'album... Alors peut être parce qu'elles se ressemblent toutes mais bon c'est de la bonne came : Mambo Sun Cosmic Dancer (tres bien) Jeepster Monolith Lean Woman Blues Get it on (chef d'oeuvre) Planet queen The motivator Hot Love ( génial) Dommage que ce soit pas l'album de 20th. century boy sinon ça prenait 5 étoiles
It's interesting how Bolan and Tyrannosaurus Rex morphed from the mystical folk of their earlier incarnation into a highly successful 70's glam rock band. What they did retain was his natural playfulness, warbling vocal and ability to write catchy pop music with decent lyrics, and it shows.
Oi what the hell. This is actually pretty good. T. Rex is a band I've always known of, but never actually listened to. Sure, there were familiar tunes here, and I'm sure I'd recognize some of their other songs, but I never could've placed them, probably. This album has groove. It's got thump. I like it.
This is a fun pop record. I did not realize T. Rex had been around since1971 let alone the 1960s! Mambo Sun is a very subtle intro to the album. But a fun vibe is created with it and the album does take a mellow tone in its early tracks. Bang a Gong is still great. I see why people like these guys. There's a real Bowie sound too. I like it all.
Really fun, vibey rock and roll
Piacevole. Ritmi simpatici e molto orecchiabili. Mi è piaciuta molto cosmic dancer.
Get it on top nummer. Toffe rock
Was OK music, just didn't fit my current mood. Maybe on a later listen I might enjoy it more
This must have been so influrntial
The origin of glam rock - it's a gas! Fave track - I mean, it's gotta be "Get it On" really. "Cosmic Dancer" is great too...
4.5 + Simply the sexiest glam rock there is. So many bops on this record that have held up - my three year old and I can agree on that point. And "Cosmic Dancer" is just such a strange and haunting track that always seems to stop me in my tracks.
it may sound dated, but this is the album that influenced 80s and 90s rock and is still influential today.
Very T Rexy. Surprised by the amount of classic blues in there. Brilliantly produced and decent span of styles.
Soft 4 stars. What’s really holding this back is the length. If they cut about 3 songs it would be better. Just too repetitive. But overall a good listen
Oh Boy Marc and Tony Visconti at their creative heights. Just love this move from Psychedelia to Glam you can hear Bolan moving as you play this he was a fame Junkie and was much loved for sure. Musically the transition from The 60's peace love and understanding to the Anarchic Punk of 75+ can be traced through the Glam of Bolan Bowie et-al. (And of course onward to the New Romantics who where Glam + Thatcherite values!) The poetry of Cosmic Dancer and the pure pop of Get It On and Jeepster make this a worthwhile listen alone. Love the horns on Girl remind of Billy Braggs arrangement of horns on some of his tracks.
Excellent.
Some well known jams, generally good music. Didn't like the vocals as much, felt like they were mixed too low, and didn't stand out much.
Makes me wonder how big T Rex could have been if not for Marc Bolan’s untimely death
Get It On! Enjoyed it.
I call almost half of the albums on this list "influential" but hey! here's another one. Cool parallels to Bowie from 2 albums ago, gritty aspects of production, I liked this immediately Saved: Mambo Sun, Monolith*, Lean Woman Blues, Bang a Gong (Get It On), Planet Queen
Marc Bolan was a master of cool guitar tones and chugging rhythms and this album is a shining example of all that. A wild songwriter and a killer glam showman, and a band that plays fast and loose. Just a feel good record overall.
T. Rex definitely paved the way for UK glam rock and I am forever grateful for it. What a pleasant listening experience!
Life’s a Gas сюда же.
A classic.
Great one, I had never heard it though I was familiar with T Rex work, I like it, it sounds influential AF.
Kinda has a funkier Rolling Stones vibe. Pretty solid
This is a great album. I discovered within the last few years and everytime I put it on I feel both nostalgic and fresh as the music is really timeless. One of my favorite "discoveries" 4.5 stars
Surprisingly excellent, especially Cosmic Dancer, oml
Mean as stuff brutha
Classic
Really great classic rock album and the beginning of glam. ‘Get It On’ and ‘Cosmic Dancer’ are classics.
Lots of filler songs, but get it on is a great song. I liked the style of music generally but many of the songs ended up sounding the same
overall thoughts: got some BANGERS on here. on the last track I was like alright last one lesgooo but daaamn Rip Off might be my fave one. def a couple tracks I can come back to, i like the dude's raspy-growl thing he got when he sings. very classic rock. not a bad track on here but I did think some of the lyrics on like 2 songs were kinda ehhh. overall, some great rock. also bongos. 4/5. fave tracks: Jeepster, bang a gong, life's a gas, rip off 🔥
I kind of get "The Beatles" mixed with a little David Bowie vibe from this band. Very reminiscent of early British rock. Had a couple of bangers, I didn't realize T. Rex wrote "Bang a Gong".
so good
Really enjoyed this album. "Get It On" has always been a fun song, but the whole album is a pretty easy listen.
A lovely, energetic slice of glam rock.
I really liked a lot of this album. Some of the songs were familiar, and a lot of other ones were fun first listens. I enjoyed listening to Electric Warrior.
This Glam Rock album was extremely fun to listen to. Supposedly this album influenced a decades worth of Glam Rock and Rock & Roll music in Britain after it was released, so it's an important piece of music history.
Really good album. Some songs reminded me a bit of Science Fiction Double Feature in Rocky Horror. Overall, really enjoyed it.
Интересный стиль, некоторые треки больше раздражают.
Really thought I submitted this review but apparently I didn't? Either way, would listen again. Pleasantly surprised at how much I dug this album.
What a good gateway from blues rock into alt. rock. A very solid album all the way through. Simple and still sophisticated
Some fairly generic glam rock tracks, but also some really lovely sweeping orchestral pieces. Original track listing is just the right length, will definitely listen again
Released three weeks after I was, this album is feeling its age as much as I am these days. It sounds dated, it is very seventies with no mistaking. I've always been a fan, my older sister's fault. An entire album of this might be going too far though, I could have done with a couple of tracks less. Still, a good listen.
Great rock n roll. Remembered the hits “Jeepster” and “Bang a Gong” from my college days where they were in regular rotation on the campus radio Classic Rock Show. I own the album from back then, but don’t recall ever playing it. Really like “Lean Woman Blues” very much in the Brit blues style of that era (eg John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers). Rest of it super solid.
Easy listening
Toe tappers
I was already familiar with the hits on this, and enjoyed most of the other songs on the album.
I listened to this on my Bose headphones (MC says they blow) on the way to the coffeshop yesterday and was reminded that when I first heard the full album as a teenager, I was amazed by the production. I'm not sure what it was: the falsetto backup vocals, the strings, the sax, the full-time conga player maybe? It's a great headphone tester. The psychedelic, fairytale lyrics wouldn't cut it today, but the music sounds as fresh as it did 50 years ago, and many of the songs are classics.
☆☆☆☆
Marvellous! Very nostalgic for me. The days when we bought and really listened to whole albums. I think Marc Bolan's music might have evolved interestingly had he not died so young.
Great album. It's a fun vibe all the way through. I've revisited it many times over the years
🦖🦖🦖🦖 4 Dinosaurs out 5
Lovely jubbly. A proper piece of 'origins of rock'
well, that was some t. rex for sure. i have the opposite of a soft spot in my heard for Get It On, because i hated the Power Station cover, and it was all over V66 back in the day, and i could not escape it. but man, they were something, huh?
Real groovy, like it a lot.
I’ve never really given T.Rex a run, but should’ve Cos that’s some good shit right there
Clear connection to the blues and a fun pop around.
Having only known "Get It On" this was a great listen to get more into T.Rex. Good poppy rock, with some catchy tunes. Highlights: -Cosmic Dancer -Get it On -Life's a Gas -Hot Love
Mambo Sun is the same tune as Like You in the jungle book. A funky folk rock vibe, I dig it. I forgot about the song get it on! I didn’t know it was by them.
the sound mixing is very good, it's pleasant and catchy music. Perfect for a roadtrip. Great Pop-Rock! I really like the arrangements - Each Instrument and the singing get their parts while the groove is playing on in. The use of stereo audio is not the beatles level of having only certain instruments per ear but its more balanced.
Came out the year I was born. Again, minimal filler, every song hitting distinctly. As a rock fan it took me a ridiculously long time to get into T. Rex
will def listen again, Liked the vocals, funky guitars and the psychedelic vibe some songs were like soft rock genre
Really interesting vibe, hard to even classify the genre, but all the songs are quite good.
Also very fun, very 70s. Good vibes and catchy lines.
good style, bang a gong is fantastic but rest aren't as catchy
Released three weeks after I was, this album is feeling its age as much as I am these days. It sounds dated, it is very seventies with no mistaking. I've always been a fan, my older sister's fault. Bursting with energy, potential, and charm. It seems like something I should looove, but it's missing something, so I merely like it a whole lot. Nice mix of riffy rock and introspective ballads, balancing a tension that's at one laidback and yet maintains an urgent glammy ethos.
This album is very nice. I reminds me of my great uncle Ken just vibing to this one that on the dance floor at my wedding. T Rex is ultimate glam-pop-pre-punk-pre-grunge radness
Fun, Funky garage rock. I'm glad this was the first album. Off to a great start.
Funky I liked the Robinson squash song
T. Rex rules.
Fedt album. Kunne måske godt vokse på en med lidt flere gennemlytninger. Rocket stil
Pretty good overall. Last song had some questionable lyrics which makes me wonder if the rest did too and I wasnt paying attention
Nice
Something i guess what Black Keys tries to execute and lot of indie folk-rock/bedroom bands as well. But this guy’s sound seems too personal when it comes to cadence. I love it, its heavyy and heaven-sent. The glam isn’t being shined but its all spilled in pretty dark matter. album is fuckin splendid
Pop personified…. This is just rockin rollin melodies!
I am not a huge fan of the vocals or low energy rock, but this is well done.
Better than I had expected. I like the singer's voice.
Interesting music but I'm having trouble placing where it must be in the timeline. Seems like a bridge between the Beatles and Bowie. Pleasant listen but don't think I'll be coming back to it.
Some good songs but didn’t vibe with the vocals
Some good well known songs but a lot sound the same. 2.5/3 out of 5
nice, nostalgic somehow. kinda cliche.
