I enjoyed this album… quite a good selection from Neil Young. I was familiar with After the Gold Rush (I know one other person who may consider Nana Mouskouri’s cover the definitive version) and Southern Man. In a bit of turnabout, I was surprised that one of my favorite songs today was Neil Young covering Oh, Lonesome Me. What a lovely version! This was a concise, enjoyable album that I am happy to see on this list.
A really great album Southern Man feels like one of the most powerful songs ever recorded just perfection in sound and execution. Kinda wish the second half had another anchor but this is a great one.
Not really my thing.
Well what can I say that about this man that I haven't already? Not a lot. The album, on the other hand I can comment anew on. Its much more polished than the other one and has several superb tracks including the title track. A truly beautiful song (though if you struggle with his voice, you would do well to check out the Renaissance cover version). I think its the lyrics that do it for me. (That's why I'm such a fan of Roy Harper.) Don't let it bring you down they sound so deep but when you really listen to them they don't quite make sense, and I love that in a lyric. Anyway, down to business. Even with all its good points, I don't think it is quite a 5. So mid to high 4 it is. ps If there is not anything by Mr Harper in this list then I shall consider the whole process null and void.
Oh dear Uncle Neil. The 3rd album of yours we’ve been given so far and each one has got worse. What will the 25th one be like? I’m afraid that your vocals were harshly exposed on most of these tracks. I thought I was listening to Big Bird from Sesame Street on ‘Don’t Let It Bring You Down’. It was only when the guitars got cranked and the background vocals pitched up that you got away with it. ‘Southern Man’ was great. ‘Oh, Lonesome Me’ was good. ‘When You Dance’ and ‘I Believe In You’ are the only other tracks to make it to the prestigious Uncle Neil playlist. A low 3 stars as it’s better than both Elt@n Jo!n and Britney Spears, who I apparently gave 2 stars too.
I remember saying I need to listen to more Neil Young. I've changed my mind. I don't want to any more. I was looking forward to hearing the original version of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and was disappointed (check out St Etienne's cover- its great). His vocals hover somewhere between intruiging and god awful. When he was singing 'it's over' I wished it was. Then the only rock out number 'When You Dance..' happened. A reprieve! Especially as 'I Believe In You' was good too. Finishes with a load of country bollocks. It gets a solid mid 1.

Beautiful late 60s/early 70s album with Neil's signature sound. The emotion streaming through these melancholy songs sound like they come from a much older person. There's just an undeniable beauty and truth that leaps from the speaker when this album plays. Don't Let It Get You Down is insane. I've been loving this album for 30+ years and it still hits hard.
Kind of a timeless sound, very easy listen. There is a reason Neil Young is quoted as a major influence to so many modern artists. Very much enjoyed this!

When we had Harvest I think I labelled that as my favourite NY album. Now that I listen to this one I'm wondering if I need to revisit that. I still have the vinyl copies of both. The title song, and Southern Man are two of my favourite NY songs overall. Interestingly, the two singles, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" and "When You Dance I Can Really Love", are probably the two songs I care for least. On balance Harvest still gets the nod for fave.
Side One is full of signature Neil young songs but side two isn't as strong. It's interesting this was released a year after the rocker "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere", starting a pattern of swinging from acoustic to rock and back again that is one of his hallmarks.
I really don't like country and folk, but my oh my, nobody does it quite like Neil Young. His music and especially his song-writing transcends all other mere mortals and so called superstar musicians. He legitimately can claim to be one of the all-time GOATS and this is also one of his best albums. This record starts out swinging and the first four songs are killers, culminating with the epic Southern Man. It lags a bit in the middle but finishes strong with Don't let it Bring you down and When you dance and I believe in you. There's a tiny bit of filler here so it gets dinged a bit in my rating for that.
Just became one of my favorite albums. I know a lot of songs from it but never heard together.
I like Neil Young’s voice, but really can’t stand too much of his lead guitar playing. I like the folky and altcountry vibes. Kinda stripped down and minimal. Couple of the songs had cool CSNY style harmonies. 3.5
Finally got around to it lol. This was tough cause I love his songwriting but it’s just really hard for me to get past his voice sometimes. Birds is pretty. The rock moments are cool like when you dance. Idk 3.5-4

God. Fuck. Fine, I'll review another Neil Young album. I'm not sure why I need to keep going through this gauntlet. There's tons of amazing albums that I haven't gotten on this list. Notably, the jazz selection is really lacking. But here we are again, listening to Neil Young. I still don't like him. I just hate the sound of his voice. He sounds like Ben Shapiro's falsetto. The ironic thing is that his vocal harmonies sound fucking great. If he would just do more of a Beach Boys things (or, dare I say it, a CSNY type of thing), I might really like him. Instead, I get one of his albums, and I just put it off for weeks because I know it will take all day. 3/5 The songs with harmonies are really great and have this timeless feel to them. Then Neil Young wanders off by himself, and I am filled with rage at his voice, which somehow combines the worst elements of Kermit the Frog and Alvin and the Chipmuinks

There are some seriously strong songs on this album. A pretty pared back production. Not keen on his vocals but they do work well on the biting social commentaries and the harmonies.

A special thanks to this guy for pulling all his shit off Spotify. And that's the best I have to say about this guy and his music. Nothing of interest. Not a big fan of dudes who whine like a lil bitch either. Not sure who did it worse, Bob Marley or Neil Young. But I got Radiohead next who I assume will whine a lot like Young, so maybe I'll wait and have a 3 person, "who sucked more" contest. Right now Marley in the lead because his crap is still on Spotify. 1.5
2 Ohhhhhhhh this is what people are talking about when they complain about Neil Young’s voice. Yeah, when you strip back the instrumentation, his voice is pretty unbearable. Like, I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to take the title track seriously - he sounds like a cartoon character. Fortunately, the songs that feature more of a backing band like When You Dance I Can Really Love and Southern Man are more enjoyable, the latter of which I appreciated in particular due to its callout of racism in the South - a topic apparently so provocative that it prompted Lynyrd Skynyrd to clapback on Sweet Home Alabama. Not a ton much else to say - was pretty disappointed with this one. For only being 33 minutes, this felt like it went on kind of long - there’s just really not a ton going on that’s particularly interesting. I really started this list off thinking I might be a Neil Young fan, and our last two entries have me now convinced otherwise. I would definitely say the man has his moments, but he’s no musical genius, and I don’t see myself going out of my way to pull up the YouTube app on my phone in order to put his music on again in the future.
Another classic. Pre Crazy Horse so it's sure golden Neil. Always love "Don't Let It Bring You Down" and for novice listeners, the "non" hits are great. Enjoy!
This is my fourth Neil Young album from the generator. I’m going to be honest, I don’t think many artists need 4+ albums on this list. I’ve had a mixed bag with Neil Young albums. I loved “On The Beach” and “Rust Never Sleeps” (which I only got generated two days ago), but I felt more meh about “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. This album is joining the ranks of “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”. It was fine. Few of the songs stood out to me and a few of them really grated. Fav track: I Believe In You
After the Gold Rush may be as good, maybe better than Harvest in my mind. Rocky, folky, country this album is in my top 10 for sure.
The first sung note of any Neil Young album (of which there are apparently an infinite number) really kills my enthusiasm for the rest of the album.

Neil Young #4 and this might be recency bias, but if this list could only have one Young/Crazy Horse I’d probably choose this one Tracks 3-5 together are a real Canadian rock powerhouse (recorded in California, yadda yadda, give us this please) Thought the sad-sack performance of “Oh Lonesome Me” was uncharacteristic until I realized it was a cover. It is rare for an artist to release 3 consecutive essential albums, but between 1969 and 1972 Neil young did it with “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere”, “After The Gold Rush” and “Harvest”. He also managed to squeeze in “Deja Vu” with Crosby Stills Nash and Young in that span. These are all albums that made an impact, tgat could be considered <I>important </I>. This would be a great album independent of the others, every song is solid, and it includes several of my favorite NY songs. I have 16 of the 21 albums NY put out between 1969 and 1990. After The Gold Rush is certainly in the 1/2 dozen I’d rate 5 stars. 5/5 Aside: it seems that this album is blocked on Spotify, that’s a bummer. But not a problem since I own it on vinyl and CD.

WHAT I ENJOYED: some nice mellow classics, the sound is really lovely for the age of the record GRIPES: some of the vocals are especially giving Tiny Tim on this one; there doesn't seem like a lot of emotional range or variety to the music so you really have to be focused to give it a real listen (if you're easily distracted, like me.) Listened Before? N This is a great album! I'm not really partial to Young's voice, but the lyricism and tone are top-notch. It's just a shame you can't listen to it on Spotify right now. Like an old friend
Simple, straightforward, nothing fancy, and yet still brilliant. Just a timeless sound for me. Not as much of a favorite as Harvest but it's a good one. Don't Let It Bring You Down is my favorite, but Only Love Can Break Your Heart is next.
I think I've finally made it through all of Neil Young's garbage. He's SO overrepresented on this list. If I never hear another frikkin' Neil Young song in my whole life, I'll be thrilled. He's an overhyped hack of a songwriter and a garbage musician. On this particular album, he's an even worse singer than usual. So glad to be done with his nonsense.

The 2009 remaster is the only thing that can be adding the weight of history to the very sound of After the Gold Rush. In real terms, this has an immense amount of Neil songwriting talent jammed in: Tunes, time, emotion. Plenty raw, just without the gritty soul hurt which jumps out of more ragged grooves. And that's what I am, subjectively, here for.
This album is so right up my alley!
After The Gold Rush is a quintessential Neil Young manoeuvre, parsing a never-to-be-filmed script from his 60s-fried neighbour Dean Stockwell to badge a bunch of songs he had already, inspire a couple of god-puncher new ones, and knock them all together into a perfect undulation of ballad, rocker, folk lament and whimsy, irrefutable evidence that Young is a lot more clear-eyed and calculating in record arrangement than his "we just banged this out in a weekend" demeanour might suggest. He had an absolute armada of treasure galleons over the '70s, and from both what he put out then and what has come out recently, he was wily in how he rationed it. More of a journey than a trip, duke. Very amused to read that he has trouble singing some of these lines as they are now gibberish to him too. Such magnificent gibberish, though!
Lots of pretty acoustic numbers on here. Is it Neil's least rocking album? Mostly deserves its reputation, but I listen to this one the least of all his classic period. Docked a point as the reach of his voice exceeds its grasp a bit on occasion.
My first exposure to Neil Young, very lyrical, easy listening. 2*, don't think I'd revisit but I didn't hate it which is why it gets more than 1*. I liked Southern Man.

Here are my thoughts starting out: - Neil Young is a weird guy - It’s annoying he doesn’t put his music on spotify. Had to listen on YouTube - His voice is annoying and whiny The music was good. I have never connected with Neil Young’s stuff despite trying, and that continues to this album (with the exception of “Old Man” from another album which is an excellent song). This one wasn’t as bad as I thought, and I realize I did go into this album with some bias and preconceived notions, haha. I’ll give this a 2.5 star, probably leaning toward two.
I am really on the fence with this one. His voice is strangly high and doesnt work with some of the songs. But there are a few songs where the high voice fits really well like Southern man and Dont let it bring you down. But the high voice isnt even his singing voice, he has a couple songs were he sings normally and its pretty good. I had to venture to youtube for this one and it was annoying.... Im probably somewhere between 2-3 stars. Its hard to say where im leaning too.

Second to Harvest Moon
Lots of Neil Young on this list and it’s not all gold, but it’s been more good than bad so far. I wouldn’t say I’m a fully-fledged fan yet, but I’ve certainly become a well-wisher of his. Some very immediate, sing-song melodies on this one, with occasional injections of energy and bite. Would happily listen through again in future. I was racking my brains to remember where I’d heard Don’t Let It Bring You Down before, and I think it must be from Everything Everything’s version. Great song. It’s nice when the generator helps me link a cover I know to its source.
I hear the influence he has had in other musicians but this ain't for me.
Couple good songs, but man the other ones are pretty horrible. Notably his voice on the first two songs about made me want to kick a puppy.
The melodies are at times sweet and other times rough, juxtaposed with Young's unique vocals gives this album an unmistakable sound.
This album hits the spot for me. Very smooth and thoughtful country folk at its best. My only gripe is that the mixing and production could have made this album so much better. The vocals are mixed too much on top and they can feel overbearing at times. The instruments feel a little flat as well. I feel like there’s so much sonic richness hiding underneath the surface that could have been revealed to great effect. The lead guitar work is also sloppy at best, which is just what you get with Neil Young. Thankfully the songs themselves are so well crafted that one can get past the nitpicks to enjoy the album as a whole.
I liked this album a lot better than I liked the last album of Neil’s I listened to. This makes me more exciting about listening to his other albums. My 2 favorite songs were After the Goldrush and Birds.
Wasn't on Spotify so just listened to Southern Man for 40 min straight. Great song. Know the album like the back of my hand anyway, incredible.

I just discovered I like Neil Young. It would be a 3.5+ The jewell for me "Don't let it bring you down". On a second "Southern Man". Yes, atypic voice, very intimate. I will get back to this album.

Seems like a straight forward 70s situation. Don’t let it bring you down holds up. Listened to twice and felt the same second time around

Fantastic album.
This is a fucking masterpiece.
I want to hate Neil Young so bad because is voice is objectively annoying. But, it's also oddly endearing. This album in particular was so simple and clean. The songs just felt honest somehow - even though I have no idea what's he's singing about most of the time. This one pulled me in, and I dig that.

Really nice, folky, warm. His voice was not my favourite on some tracks especially in the beginning, but overall I really enjoyed the album.
Overall not Young's strongest album to me - much as I don't dispute its ideas, Southern Man is Young at his most holier than thou preaching, despite being a bit of a banger. A lot of the rest is weirdly subdued low energy. But it is redeemed and then some by the presence of the title track, possibly my favorite Neil Young solo song, and When You Dance... which is certainly in my top 10.

Good compositions and easy to listen to. Neil Young's high and sometimes shakey vocals are an acquired taste. Ultimately, there are better albums for the same musical vibe. I found this album a little boring.

4/5. It's definitely a very quiet album, more singer-songwriter than anything. It's chill and there are some great lyrics and rhythms, but there is a sense of throwaway songs, like a lot of them don't feel finished or they could be better. Overall, it is a beautiful album but not perfect.

Nice to hear the original of Only Love. I forgot that was one of Neil's. This made we warm a little more to the rest of the album, but after a while I found I'd stopped listening properly.
Only Love Can Break Your Heart is sung with so much sorrow. The message in Southern Man is more powerful than the actual music. The album fades a little towards the end, but it's still very decent
I appreciate the ethos that went in the creation of this album. Props for that. Better Neil Young albums out there, though.
An amazing songwriter and story teller, his music is timeless. I’m not a huge fan of his voice but I can overlook that with how awesome his music is.

Un album tout en douceur, ou la voix criarde et folklorique de Neil Young vient sublimer l'acoustique de la guitare et du piano Un album peut-être pas aussi original au vue de la décennie, mais qui a toute sa place dans les seventies. Un album teinté de country où l'harmonica prend sa place sans grande égoïsme parmi les autres instruments. Point positif sur le piano qui se suffit à lui seul, aussi rythmique que mélodique, une agréable surprise dans les morceaux les plus doux. Content aussi de retrouver cette atmosphère western qui présente un syncrétisme très intéressant entre rock et country, ce que j'avais déjà apprécié chez Chris Isaak. Point négatif: Une voix qui n'a pas de facette très originale, qui complète les instruments d'une manière très attendue, sans surprise. Un album qui présente peu de fluctuation. Bien que l'image de l'artiste soit claire, on en attendrait un peu plus. 6/10

Album 1 of 1001 After the Gold Rush, Neil Young Favorite Song: Southern Man Great songwriting. I love the musicianship as well with well placed crescendos to emphasize parts. Folk isn't really my thing but there are moments to appreciate.

I like Neil Young, still have some of his vinyl from back in the day, but I feel this album is very overrated for what it is, and hangs basically on everything that went before it. Neil never was one for happy cheerful singing or lyrics, but this album pushes the whiny boundaries a little bit beyond the limits even for Neil on a number of tracks. A couple of good tracks in there, which in their own entity I would select to listen to... but not the album as a whole, I wouldn't select this album to listen to.
Can't make my mind up about Neil Young The man can't sing but he makes good music. Some of the tracks on this album are great, some are boring. Wouldn't put it on again to listen to the whole thing but would listen to individual ones off it.
It's a great album but it isn't Neil's best. I like other albums from him more but this is still an excellent listen. The title track, Don't Let it Bring You Down and When You Dance I Can Really Love are stand out tracks.

I love Neil Young, although his voice whines in that nasal, grating way. Southern Man is an excellent track, although with a baffling narrative turn midway that I can't quite interpret.

Another one I'm surprised I haven't heard before. I've never delved into Neil Young outside of Buffalo Springfield and CSNY so this was a great introduction to his catalogue.

Neil Young was an artist I vaguely knew of, but had never listened to before and therefore didn’t know what to expect. This was such a treat, I’ll definitely be checking out more.
For most of my life, I thought Young, like Dylan, was a great songwriter who should have other people sing his songs. Now I listen to this and hear the brittleness in his voice on Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and I can't imagine anyone else singing it. (I've since come around to the same thing with Dylan too). It's a raw, beautiful record.

I’m sure if you love Neil Young you’ll love this. Personally I find his voice a bit too whiny which distracts me from the content.
Seminal early Young. Evocative of a loss of innocence and the instrumental embellishments of horn and piano thru out are very tasteful. Perfect.

My Neil Young hot take is that I might like this album more than Harvest. Another from Dad's vinyl collection, so I feel a connection to my Pops when I throw this one on. Beyond that, the melodies and lyricism here are just fantastic. It's a great listen, and it's in and out in barely half an hour. Canadian excellence.
I think this is my third favorite Neil Young album, after Harvest and Rust Never Sleeps. As with many of his albums, After the Gold Rush sits between musical styles, with folk songs like After the Gold Rush and rough rockers like Southern Man.

I know everyone loves Neil Young, but I just don't feel it most of the time. This album deserves more listens, but I am far from knocked out by it.
My favorite Neil album. As a teenager I would listen to a cassette copy on my walkman over and over while mowing lawns.
After The Gold Rush is a 5/5 track, but the rest are kind of meh for me. Unfortunately that is how all Neil Young albums are for me, a few bangers and the rest are filler.

First, I will note that this is the 8th album with Young's name on it that's served to me over here. We can probably all (?) agree this is a bit of an overkill. As for this album's music: kind of boring, I guess?

It's a great Neil Young album, unfortunately by not being on Spotify I was also greeted with ads between most tracks, which took away from the overall vibe. Still, what a wonderful lyricist - it's hard not to care deeply about what he's singing about or be reflective when he sings. Cheers Neil.
Southern Man is an awesome song, great guitar stuff. Also some other great songs on here. Love the lyrics and stuff, the group vocals aren't really my thing but I don't mind it too much here.
Good God! Back to back Neil Young!?! Why!? He's not even on spotify! Ugh... Went into this with pretty low expectations because I didn't care much for Neil Youngs - On the Beach. Which was recommended to me JUST YESTERDAY! Anywho... The album opens up with Tell me Why and its not a bad song. The harmonies weren't too bad. Besides that it didn't have a whole lot going for it. The following 2 songs did even less and are forgettable... You wont believe it though! Shockingly! We get to Southern Man and dare I say it?? Can it be possible?? I actually like this one! It's got a good driving rhythm, a nice little lick that carries it and a simple but effective drum pattern that I can nod my head to! I really like it at about the 1:30 mark when the tempo picks up a half beat or so and we get a pretty cool solo/breakdown. My God we have a real song here! If Neil Young wasn't such a pretentious fuck and was willing to put his music on spotify I may actually be willing to playlist this one! The good times don't last though because Til Morning Comes is up next and despite its short length its pretty repetitive. the horn section on this one is the most interesting thing we're getting until When you Dance starts and while it's not nearly as good as Southern Man it's an OK song. Feel free to sleep through the last couple songs. You aren't missing much here. As an album, I feel like this one had more of a southern sound rather than the overly folky style we had with on the beach. I appreciate the experimentation with different genres/styles. Definitely prefer After the Goldrush over On the Beach despite them both getting the same 3 star rating. Partly because of Southern Man being as good as it was. And partly because Young moved a slightly more exciting style of rock. I wish I could go back and change the latter to a 2 star but hey I'm just trying to be fair and unbiased here. I see the merit in Youngs music. As I've said before its just not for me.
Album not very accessible.
A record of extraordinarily high quality from such a young artist. “Tell Me Why” sets an easy tone, hinting at the mix of delight and melancholia to come. Title cut is an all-time rock lyric and Neil’s eccentric vocal style has never been more effective (“Look on Mother Nature on the run in the nineteen-Seventies.” is just haunting.) “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” is another classic. Drop out the controversy and “Southern Man” is a pretty great rock song, dark and edgy. All of the cuts work on their own terms, and offer a bit of a hootenanny feel that smoothly mixes the sad with the, well, not-sad. Even the upbeat cuts have a touch of wistfulness, and/or blues. “Til the Morning Comes” is a nice bouncy little interlude which sets a context for “Oh Lonesome Me” which could be laughably mawkish but the high, oddball vocals and lovely playing (harmonica especially and that brief, understated solo on the outro [which woulda been nice to hear more of]) elevate matters such that it feels quite relatable (honest and, thus, affecting) in the end. “Old Man” is unimpeachable, if seeming a little downgraded a bit by overexposure, while the solemn and stately “Birds” shows just how pure and strong (that is not quavering and breaking) Neil could make his voice. “When You Dance” is underrated in the extreme. Lord knows that “Cripple Creek Ferry” is awfully good for being the arguably the weakest tracks here, besides being far better than the Byrds silliness of the same name. Looking back, few artists have ever gone off to such a great start in their career. The quality is all the remarkable for the steady and voluminous output of early years; his solo albums 2-5 are all rightfully represented here, and all released within.

Neil Young at his very best. Beautiful songs performed with incredible care. This is an album that is free of time and space. After The Gold Rush doesn't need to prove anything.
Love this album. Brings up a lot of nostalgia. I can clearly remember my dad putting this on when I was a kid. Neil's voice is such a beautiful and familiar sound.
Evergreen Neil album, the soundtrack to the exact moment when the hippy revolution fizzled out and the freaks all got proper jobs and mortgages - though still smoked dope. If this was the soundtrack to a film it would be the key party scene in The Ice Storm.

listened directly after an album i didn't like and this was a breath of fresh air, never listened to any neil young before. title track, "southern man", "when you dance i can really love", and "i believe in you" are great and the rest is pretty good too. i'd give this a 3.5/5 but i can't give half stars so i'll round it up since it's quite enjoyable and it might just grow on me

His voice. Don't know whether to love it or hate it. Well, I am loving it today. After the Gold Rush is an album I've heard before. I know the song, \"Only Love Can Break Your Heart\" more because it was on a fellow CSN&Y, Graham Nash's album. Then of course it was again made popular by Saint Etienne. (She is adorable singing it in the video!) The album is solid though with a lot of good tracks. Standouts: After the Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Don't Let It Bring You Down, Southern Man, Till The Morning Comes, 3.5/5

This Neil Young album is arguably better than Harvest, with every song being great. My favorite song is ‘Southern Man’; it’s got a great melody and lyrics, and it’s way better then ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, which it inspired. The rest of the album is no slouch, though. This is one of the Neil Young albums I have less to say about, so bye.

It's a good listen. And I think there was gravitas when it was released. It's just different now. I'd listen to Ray Price again, I think.
Introspective, wistful, patient at times, definitely a pretty compelling album. Though the energy turns up on Southern Man, the album is pretty intimate with Neil's unique voice telling a story. Very engaging.
Not a bad album, but also definitely not his best. I could see myself rediscovering this album later in life and loving it. Until then, it’s just pretty good.

I can say I've never really listened to Neil Young, outside of hearing some of his more popular songs on a classic rock station or something. Best way I can describe this is a very pleasant sounding folk rock album with a lot of heart to it. It wasn't the most captivating listen to me for most of it, but it was still fairly enjoyable. I did struggle some with a lot of the cryptic lyrics, which I did focus more on given the instrumentation. Highlights were Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and especially After The Gold Rush which was a gorgeous piano ballad themed around environmental damages done during the 70s. Bless him for that one.
I love Neil Young and I love some of his music but I only like lots of it.
Following the success of Deja vu, Neil Young shifts from blues rock to all sorts of folky styles. And it really works out for him. For some reason, indieheads considers the first two tracks to be his best songs. I thought "Tell Me Why" lacked anything special, while "After the Gold Rush" was a boring ballad, and after three listens, I still didn't get the appeal. The tracks after that, however, really impressed me. We got some sick fingerpicking and some catchy pop tracks. Thought it got weaker near the end, especially hated "Birds." It's a versatile short listen that's great for introducing Neil Young to people.
I dig it, makes me wish I weren’t pot-committed to Spotify as far as playlist building goes, a lot of these make for great road trip songs but Neil Young has pulled his music from that platform. I thought I’d hate it but I didn’t find his voice annoying like I thought off the first track, and the horn on After the Gold Rush sort of won me over early.

Usually pretty annoyed by his voice but there are a handful of great songs on here. I feel like 3.5 is too low but 4 is too high.
Only love can break your heart is a truly great song. I like this Neil Young a lot. Not the biggest fan of his voice, but it hits a groove after a while.
Another one of Neil's classics, perhaps a little gentler than Harvest except for the absolutely scathing Southern Man. Love it.

An absolute powerhouse album of Americana. The consistency across not just this record, but Young's entire discography is something that very few artists match. The sound is always HIM, but always changing and bringing new, interesting ideas. I appreciate how this album takes its time while still being tight.
One of the finest golden hours from one of the most consistently captivating songwriters and guitarists of all time.

I appreciate that it puts me on the wrong side of history but… Sweet Home Alabama is a much better song than Southern Man, right? There are some beautiful moments on this album but it’s also pretty whiny and nasal. Also, Spotify.

This was a pleasant folk, country and rock album. While I don't think this was really my favourite of any of those genres, it was a nice album to spend half an hour of the evening enjoying. It was also kept interesting by breaking up the country and folk tracks with some more energetic rock. Overall a good album. Favourite: When You Dance I Can Really Love

This album has some of my favorites on it. Listening to it as a whole really brings everything into focus though. The album is extremely melancholic, yet Neil Young is such a gifted lyricist, that there is no over reliance on metaphor and I don't get a sense that he's wallowing in his emotions; they just are what they are. After listening to quite a few Neil Young albums as a whole, I think that this might be my favorite.

This was better than I expected. Neil Young does some much better with harmony and there was a lot more harmony in this one. His voice is a spice, not a dish. That being said, I wouldn't voluntarily listen to this again.

Went in expecting to hate it based on Neil's other work on this list. Didn't hate it. Didn't really like it either. I just don't really like his voice. It's whiny and grating.
