Reviews (page 10 of 11)
Enjoyed the album, especially the title track and Southern Man. Hadn't really listened to any Neil Young previoulsy so its good to see that he mostly lives up to the hype
I know everyone loves Neil Young, but I just don't feel it most of the time. This album deserves more listens, but I am far from knocked out by it.
After The Gold Rush is a 5/5 track, but the rest are kind of meh for me. Unfortunately that is how all Neil Young albums are for me, a few bangers and the rest are filler.
Lovely album and one I’ve listened to plenty. It’s not on my relisten list but it’s always nice to go back.
Good God! Back to back Neil Young!?! Why!? He's not even on spotify! Ugh... Went into this with pretty low expectations because I didn't care much for Neil Youngs - On the Beach. Which was recommended to me JUST YESTERDAY! Anywho... The album opens up with Tell me Why and its not a bad song. The harmonies weren't too bad. Besides that it didn't have a whole lot going for it. The following 2 songs did even less and are forgettable... You wont believe it though! Shockingly! We get to Southern Man and dare I say it?? Can it be possible?? I actually like this one! It's got a good driving rhythm, a nice little lick that carries it and a simple but effective drum pattern that I can nod my head to! I really like it at about the 1:30 mark when the tempo picks up a half beat or so and we get a pretty cool solo/breakdown. My God we have a real song here! If Neil Young wasn't such a pretentious fuck and was willing to put his music on spotify I may actually be willing to playlist this one! The good times don't last though because Til Morning Comes is up next and despite its short length its pretty repetitive. the horn section on this one is the most interesting thing we're getting until When you Dance starts and while it's not nearly as good as Southern Man it's an OK song. Feel free to sleep through the last couple songs. You aren't missing much here. As an album, I feel like this one had more of a southern sound rather than the overly folky style we had with on the beach. I appreciate the experimentation with different genres/styles. Definitely prefer After the Goldrush over On the Beach despite them both getting the same 3 star rating. Partly because of Southern Man being as good as it was. And partly because Young moved a slightly more exciting style of rock. I wish I could go back and change the latter to a 2 star but hey I'm just trying to be fair and unbiased here. I see the merit in Youngs music. As I've said before its just not for me.
Pretty good.
only know you love her when you let her go (la petite voix chevrotante de neil)
Kuuntelin kahdesti putkeen, kun en vain kyennyt keskittymään. Eli: ei vanginnut. Mutta kiehtoi. Pari huippukohtaa kuten Southern man, mutta tasaista (beige).
This wasn't as good as the last neil young album I got and no I'm still not over the fact that none of his music is on spotify anymore. Overall, it was fine though.
Ta bien.
His voice. Don't know whether to love it or hate it. Well, I am loving it today. After the Gold Rush is an album I've heard before. I know the song, \"Only Love Can Break Your Heart\" more because it was on a fellow CSN&Y, Graham Nash's album. Then of course it was again made popular by Saint Etienne. (She is adorable singing it in the video!) The album is solid though with a lot of good tracks. Standouts: After the Gold Rush, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Don't Let It Bring You Down, Southern Man, Till The Morning Comes, 3.5/5
french horn on the title track is euphoric
It's a good listen. And I think there was gravitas when it was released. It's just different now. I'd listen to Ray Price again, I think.
Starting to get a pattern with Neil Young albums: they're all pretty good, with some very good tracks in there. But overall nothing that's super unique/outstanding to me. Favourite track: Southern man
Beetje oppervlakkig album. Geen opmerkelijke nummers.
I can say I've never really listened to Neil Young, outside of hearing some of his more popular songs on a classic rock station or something. Best way I can describe this is a very pleasant sounding folk rock album with a lot of heart to it. It wasn't the most captivating listen to me for most of it, but it was still fairly enjoyable. I did struggle some with a lot of the cryptic lyrics, which I did focus more on given the instrumentation. Highlights were Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and especially After The Gold Rush which was a gorgeous piano ballad themed around environmental damages done during the 70s. Bless him for that one.
Usually pretty annoyed by his voice but there are a handful of great songs on here. I feel like 3.5 is too low but 4 is too high.
Neil’s voice is smooth as fuck. Some songs are beautiful and well-written, but several feel like they’re missing something to make them that much fuller. Regardless, this is still like a 7. Good album
Sweet
Good!
Another Neil Young album. Still don't like his vocals. The rest is decent. It has "Southern Man," so that's something.
Ah, back when you didn't have to be able to sing to get a record deal. Perfectly fine album once the nails on the chalk board could be tuned out.
Boring
I'm just not that big a fan of Young. I liked CSNY way better. I don't really care for his voice and his song writing doesn't really blow my skirt up.
Not available
Beetje haat-liefde met die Neil. Ik ken spannendere platen van hem dan deze, al staan hier ook wel weer een aantal erg toffe nummers op.
2 sterren voor de stem, 4 voor de liedjes.
Again just ok
Great songwriter but this cunt needs singing lessons 👍🏾
I’ve never been a big fan of Neil, Young’s voice, but he’s a good songwriter, and these songs are enjoyable.
I was not necessarily in the mood for Neil Young but I can see why there's hype for this album
Good stuff
After the Gold and Southern Man are classics.
I think you're either in the mood or not. Not sure I was but musically fine.
Pas mon style sur 20 2 étoiles pour la carrière
Me incomoda la voz. No me parece que tengas canciones memorables
esta bueno pero no se si es mi onda. Es muy cancion tipo fin de pelicula, no sé, me da esas vibes
I do even like some Neil Young songs (Keep on rockin in the free world!), but his voice in this album just stinks so much. I cannot.
Some of this is unlistenable, and some of this is really, really good Best Song: Only Love Can Break Your Heart Rating: 4.5/10 Starts: 2
Oof, didn't love neils voice
Neil's voice has never appealed to me. Not my thing.
Neil Young has his bangers, and his not bangers.
please algorithm. I am begging you. No more Neil young. Please. I have a wife and children just please
Muy tranqui lo de Neil.
Boooring. Neil Young's voice is whiney and the songs are uninteresting. Southern Man is a bit more exciting and sounds more what I associate with Neil Young, but this album is not it. 1.5 stars
A chill album. Good for background music, but not really anything here that lit me on fire. Voice was a bit irritating in a way that didn't serve the music. Rating: 2.5
Might be slightly my mood when I was listening but wasn't particularly a fan of this album for him
Niet echt voor mij
Southern Man
unmemorable
needs a 2nd listen. Quite enjoyable but didn't wow me. Nice folk music
I'll be perfectly honest it's just not really my thing and I don't like his singing voice. I basically just find the record inoffensive for the most part. Sorry roz. Southern Man probably the highlight but then Till the Morning Comes immediately follows and is my least favourite moment of the album.
05/25 Nothing stood out on this one
I strongly dislike Young’s voice. He sure can write a good song, I just don’t want to hear him sing it.
voice is grating no thank you
Low energy
Neil Young's voice is one of music's great polarisers. High, nasal, fragile — some people find it deeply moving. I find it deeply Mickey Mouse. I tried. I listened to the whole thing. The voice didn't grow on me. After the Gold Rush is apparently the softer, more acoustic side of Neil Young. Which means if the voice is the problem — and it is — there's nowhere to hide. The songs underneath are probably fine. I couldn't get past the delivery to find out. Honest rating: 1.5/5. Filed under 2 for rounding purposes.
Karaoke the album
Southern Man is GOATed and I can live without the rest.
Butt
Zzzzzzzzz
Boooooorrinnnngg
I don't know what you want from me man, it's Neil Young. Everything sounded like Heart of Gold
Hard time trying to get into this one mostly due to his vocals, its a style and I can see why someone might like it but it pulls me out and detracts from the backing instruments. Something about the songs doesn't seem to flow very well, like its always failing to take off or settle down to be a sad folk energy aside from Southern Man which carries a consistent tone and I did enjoy. Maybe I'll find a way to appreciate his music more later on.
Me gustó, pero uno de los cantantes pega unos agudos raros a veces. Me guardé 3 canciones.
sounds annoying
good album. felt like an 80 year old american
Southern Man is a stark callout. When the song came out it was only 100 years since slavery.
why the rush?
I really wish I could like this folksy, sincere singer-songwriter shit, but I just don't. The commitment to singing harmonies with Young's uniquely weird vocal range is oddly admirable, but truly, I just can't listen to much of this.
te chórki fajne bujają ale jak dochodzi do samodzielnego wokalu chłopa to mid w chuj, np w after the gold rush najgorzej śpiewa
album #33 i really wanted to enjoy this album, as i like a lot of CS&N but unfortunately, the album just did not click with me. i tried x3 times and can't say i enjoyed it any more on consecutive listens. sorry young, i might like old more. part of it, i think, is because a lot of it feels same-y and forgettable. if you told me it tracks 5 to 8 were the same song in different fonts, i can't say i wouldn't believe you. i do like the lyricism, though, and the solo in "After the Gold Rush" is very pretty. young does well to present a melancholic album with undertones of frustration and nostalgia. note: it's hilarious that southern man made lynyrd skynyrd so mad that they wrote sweet home, alabama. respect lol. ꩜ average track rating: 2.1/5 ꩜ favourite track(s): cripple creek fairy, after the gold rush ꩜ least favourite track(s): till the morning comes, birds ꩜ album rating: ★★☆☆☆ ꩜ number of albums left to review: 1,056 ꩜ number of albums from the list that i agree with being on the list: 20 ꩜ albums from the list that I would consider on my list: 8 ꩜ albums from the list I won't include on my list: 25
felt like a lot of the same and not very interesting to listen to imo…
Bastante meh pero tiene sus momentos
Full Album Thoughts: Album Rating: 2.29 (B-) So I am just allergic to this guys voice, it is like nails on a chalkboard to me. Which is a shame because the actual songwriting is pretty solid! Southern Man and Dont Let It Bring You Down are standout songs that I just WISH someone else was taking point on. I cant ever find myself casually listening to the album. Its a curiosity waiting to be mined for ideas, but execution is hampered by an aggressively distasteful lead performance. Track Thoughts: Tell Me Why B+ This isnt I Want It That Way! See this is what I was saying, you do a stripped back country song, and have beautiful vocal harmonies on the chorus. Also, some very evocative imagery in the lyrics! The song is repetitive, but not in a way that grates; its got enough breathing room for my brain to actually latch onto. I think I just dont particularly like the vocal tone of the lead. After the Gold Rush D+ Yeah idk if I am going to jell with this higher pitched voice over most of these songs. Cant say there isnt anything WRONG with this piano ballad, but woof I am just not up for the singer. Like, immediately the trumpet sounds way nicer, if this was JUST a trumpet/piano song it'd be a B tier. It's like if Kevin McDonald was trying to sing. I am just going to harp on the singing this whole album aren't I. Only Love Can Break Your Heart C- I am concerned that we are flying too close to "Generic Country Song" sway. I really like the harmonies on this too! I just want a bit more getup and go to my songs and this is too slow for my liking. Southern Man A+ Oh heck yeah I am grooving along to this immediately! Put a bit of distortion on the vocals so they are breaking up just ever so slightly, and you know what, it fits in with the guitar drive! Double time the piano for the solo! Yeah this is an all time classic I wish I was aware of sooner! Of all the songs to make 6 minutes long on a 30 minute album, im glad this one takes up 20% of the run time XD. Till the Morning Comes D This isn't OK GO! This is just insulting that you could be singing in a lower register that sounds more comfortable to your voice! As is, what the heck is this nothing little ditty. This feels like Fake Interstitial Music in a Bad Community Theatre Production of something. Its too short to be offensive, but it should have been cut. Oh, Lonesome Me B+ It's a little to whiney for me, but I've absolutely heard its decedents, I just cant think of when or where right now. The vocals work better here, we have harmonica to really sell the melancholy. Don't Let It Bring You Down A- Again with this shit ass falsetto BUT it has some crazy evocative lyrics, and I am digging the guitar+bass+piano tone on this. Even the drum has good stripped back drive. I actually wanna learn the bass to this, cuz its groove as hell. Birds C- At least this is a softer voice sung in a decent register, but dang do I not care for the slow piano balad. When You Dance I Can Really Love B See a rock song with strange harmonies like this give me a kind of Boston vibe? I dont hate it, is what I am saying, which is about as good as this album get. I Believe in You C- We are back to weird wimpy falsetto and I am checked out. This is too slow. I dont even get joy from the muppets in the background going la-la-la Cripple Creek Ferry B Hey this isn't Cripple Creek, the show-offy banjo song I am familiar with! This is pretty nothing song that I actually enjoy! But its over so dang fast!
Oh man I didn't realize how accurate that Dana Carvey bit was.
Not a fan of Neil Young I’m afraid. I know his legacy and like some songs but a whole album is not for me.
I really want to like Neil Young, but I can’t get past that nasally voice, especially in the higher notes. Southern Man is still pretty good, though.
I really wish I liked Neil Young but I found this soooo boring and dreary.
I dont like his voice
Good if you like that kind of thing but a bit grown up for me. I just don’t like the whiney voice either I’m afraid.
It was actually dogshit, tell me why good, and only love can break your heart, the rest prettyyyyyyy mid,
The amount of country in this list is starting to become disturbing
He may be a good song writer, but goodness I just don't like him. There's something about his musical style that doesn't jive with me.
Its alright, listened on a long drive. Bit boring but nothing too bad, high quality elevator music imo
Lovely little album. Liked the first half more than the second maybe I’m just depressed as the more jolly it got the least I enjoyed it. High 2. Just didn’t fully tickle my pickle. Fun fact I’ve seen Neil young live and he tore it up wish I listened to this album prior.
Some good songs but overall boring, He seems to be a better songwriter than artist
A bit minimalist — I find that I prefer Neil’s later, less folksy albums.
strong opening, i forget all the time just how familiar ive become with neil young over the years. just as a voice out in the air he's hard to avoid. 'southern man' hits hard as the early stand out, though 'only love can break your heart' seems to get more play, i felt fairly unimpacted by it. similarly the titular 'after the gold rush' and its line "Look at Mother Nature on the run In the 1970s" perhaps felt a bit underwhelming as ive watched mother nature hang in the town square in 2020s. that being said, the usual weary hopefullness in neil's voice is just as comfortable as id remembered it as on my moms old mix cds. coming into the ending tracks of the album, im thinking 'don't let it bring you down will be my second off the album. though as 'cripple creek ferry' plays me out im finding it a fun and playful way out from the rest of tracks off the back half. on the 7 its around a 5, not quite a 6 but the nostalgia homleyness of neil young's voice at least makes this a pleasant record.
Eh. The title song was ok but just because I knew it before. I don’t like folk
I really don't like when singers try to show off the highest note that they can sing. I am worried for his vocal chords if he keeps straining them like this. You don't become a better singer if you can sing higher notes. Neil is not impressing me so far
Neil. Calm down. Falsetto is not for you.
Neil Young is fine.
Only love can break your heart is a stand out but album is not for me
Mawkish lyrics over sophomoric music performed, it seems intentionally, poorly.
First example of I see why it's seen as great, but folk rock isn't my much of my thing to rate as highly as others
Okay
another banger review incoming...... ehhhhh
This album is a mixture of a few different genres: country, rock, and folk. Lyrics consist of melodies woven into stories. Though I thought "Tell Me Why" and "Southern Man" were good, I disliked the album because I'm not into this style of music. I suppose it's too meandering and reflective for me.
Not my thing, but listenable enough. Neil Young won't be on regular rotation for me, but I also wouldn't jump out the window if he comes on the wireless
I didn't know Neil Young was Canadian. Cool. I feel like I've heard of him before in some context but I can't remember what. Whatever. I like this it's fun. It's something definitely yeah it's a good vibe a little more Canada than Australia but whatever I'm still enjoying. His voice is quite whiny though. Im back. Took a little break. And how I have a new Neil Young to listen to. I like it he's just so whiny tbh. Holy shit he's annoying. I honestly don't care. Favourite: Southern Man Least favourite: After The Gold Rush
Ok but I do like folk music. Maybe not my favorite genre but recently, I have been listening to a lot of folk. I just… can’t get past Neil Young’s voice in some of these songs. Unfortunately, that is a big sticking point for me. I will say that I like some of this other work, especially group recording that he’s done. Season: Early Fall Favorite Song: Only Love Can Break Your Heart
On first Listen I was like, yuck. On my second listen i started bobbing along to some parts of the song, thinking well, maybe Neil is just a diomind in the rough, hes got some good sounds developing, some really catchy parts, maybe I was too harsh, a 3 at least. Then it hit me. WAIT A SECOND. These songs are reminding me of other, better songs, ive been had, scammed, HOODWINKED. The duplicty of this album hit me like a freight truck, hes somehow managed to make an album that emotionally reminds me of better songs without having any good ones itself. The rough parts for me are pretty rough and make me want to say count your fucking days Neil. Upon looking at when it came out, (Almost half a acentury ago) the vitriol left my body. Ya alright, you get a bit of a pass, but only as a historical artificat, Now hold this 2

After the Gold Rush gute Musik sei. Aber das ist Selbstbetrug. Denn obwohl das Album stellenweise hochwertiges Material enthält, sticht keiner der Songs aus der gleichförmigen, trägen Oberfläche hervor.“
I like everything but his voice and the fact that it gets boring when listening to the whole album. Weirdly more listenable than CCR
I didn’t particularly like it. I thought he had a pretty whiny voice
Feel like this would be something that would be on the soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy. But just not my jam. would do a 2.5.
I don’t know if it was just the way this hit me today, but it was relentlessly boring. That said, I can see the craft here, and understand why it’s on the list. His voice is beautiful. 4/10 Acceptable
Too slow and weird
First impressions - Christ, no
That I much prefer the Saint Etienne cover to any song here kinda says it all. Probably like a lot of folks I’m hit and miss with Neil. Tell Me Why - pretty good - the rest...eh. He has a proclivity for cloying, catchy melodies that might scan as heartwarming, catchy melodies for others, but alas, I am me. Much more an On the Beach/Tonight’s the Night guy.
Want to start off by saying that this is not the music that I typically listen to. However, it is very melancholic, but at the same time, hopeful and outgoing. Instrumentals are a little lazy and not creative. Lyrics sound like they have a deeper meaning that just what the words are saying.
no offense, just kinda boring
Crosby, Stills, Nash, i Young su izgleda izvlačili najbolje iz drugih kolektivno jer kad ih slušam pojedinačno (sad dva dana zaredom) mrzim ih a ono zajedničko i Buffalo Springfield su mi bili ok.
I don’t really like Neil Young’s voice anyway, and to hear him doing this whiny country folk stuff just ain’t it.
Jesus, more Neil Young?! This record is.. fine I guess? “Southern Man” is the only song that really stands out to me in any meaningful way. Every other song on this album just sort of melts together into one boring blob of sameness. I think my previous criticisms of Neil Young apply here.
Neil Young is probably the only artist we've been made to listen to more than Lou Reed and is only about 30% more tolerable. For that 30% I do thank my lucky stars, but I mostly am feeling bedraggled for having to listen to another. Neil. Young. Album. "After the Gold Rush" and "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" are alright. The rest is typical skippable Neil.
Honestly I've never loved Neil Young's voice. Harvest Moon is very good but this album didn't have the same bite that his best album does. If I want to listen to this type of music there are much better options to me.
Meh Cripple Creek Ferry was my fav
Bestes Lied: Don’t let it bring you down
It was ok, nothing too exciting, but nothing too bad as well. Just, not very memorable.
Neil Young's voice is made for parody. can't take his singing seriously. lyricism aside, this album was just ok. I can tolerate the renditions of some of these songs... I might actually prefer them.
Easy listen. No standout songs
love neil young! wasnt a huge fan of this album in particular. it was a little sad for my taste. but the instrumentals were phenomenal.
i just don't like listening to his tone
Better than the one I got before by the same artist but still not my cup of tea
Some great, most not.
Eh…
There are some great songs on this album, unfortunately Neil Young "sings" them.
Un po' troppo country
6/1089 Honestly not much to say a barely got halfway through. His voice was annoying but I kinda get the music. NOT the energy I needed right before finals though
A few nice tunes but a bit naff
i definitely like the second album more. the sound of this one felt sharp to my ears. top songs: when you dance i can really love only love can break your heart notes while listening: -i like the stacked echoing vocals -i like the lyrics -“why is it hard to make arrangements with yourself when you’re old enough to repay and young enough to sell?” (it caught my attention, sounds deeps but idk what it means, let me look it up later) (turns out he said that its gibberish & i found that funny)
it was fine. not my favorite. i liked “tell me why”
I have to admit that I’ve always struggled with Neil Young and this album was no exception. The songs don’t vary enough for my liking and his voice doesn’t do anything to me. But “Southern Man” was pretty good and it got added to my playlist!
I wish I could do halfs. Not loving his voice. Instrumentals on fleece though
This album proves that I don't have the taste for Neil Young. I like his songwriting, but I don't like his voice. Nails on a chalk board.
The first songs on the album weren't that good, the rest is good. Not my type of music, unfortunately. If you like rock and roll you should check it out.
Fun listen but nothing to write home about. I really liked the first song
No like
Fully not an album for me, Neil's voice is grating and thin in a way that I don't appreciate. He doesn't feel particularly earnest when singing, just kind of untalented. There's some good moments musically, his guitar playing is distinct and I did like Southern Man, but I have no real desire to return to this album. In fact, despite only being 31 minutes, I was hoping it would be over faster.
So for my first album, I get Neil Young, an artist I've never really seen the appeal of, despite many people I enjoy listening to holding him in high esteem. After listening to the album, my opinion hasn't changed. It's the voice, which is in full effect on the first couple of tracks. Too high for his range. Once this is toned down, it's a little more palatable. Favourite Tracks - Till The Morning Comes - Great Trumpets, Birds - Lovely harmonies with the band. Least favourites - Only Love Can Break Your Heart - The St Etienne version is so much better, in all it's 90s dance pop. Tell Me Why. Cripple Creek Ferry really annoyed me for some reason, but it's less than two minutes, so it's gone before I turned it off.
tristona, melancolica, folk, tipo bob dylan, harmonica, un poco meh en general
Very meh to me. Neil Young can do so much better! I’ve known and liked Only Love Can Break Your Heart for a while, and that one still stood out. Besides that and the guitar on Southern Man this album was pretty forgettable.
Naw not really
good yes but maybe not for me i love neil young but he’s extra whiney in this one and i can’t get past that rip
Really enjoyed the opening track. The title track's falsetto is quite grating. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is far superior when Saint Etienne are singing it. Got a bit bored.
I dont remember one song
I lisent to it twice I couldn’t tell you any songs in the album
Neil Young has really run the gamut for me... and this is the low point. Not necessarily bad low, but I didn't connect with this one.
One thing the generator definitely achieved was to teach me that my appreciation of Neil Young‘s music was way too naive. Before subscribing here, I was working with the assumption that his take on Folk rock was pretty ok and worth an occasional listen - turns out I can’t stand this Boomer crap.
sorry not my taste
It's ok considering other stuff he has on this list. I didn't like it that much, but I didn't hate it.
I was pleased to see Neil Young come up on 1001 albums because After the Gold Rush is an album I’ve been wanting to listen to properly for years. I’d tried it now and again but never really enjoyed it. And yet some artists I love (eg Thom Yorke of Radiohead) are avowed fans of NY and this album in particular. But…I still don’t really get it. I don’t care for his voice and I didn’t find the lyrics particularly insightful nor the music particularly interesting. The song Southern Man is pretty good. And the song When You Dance…ditto It was also nice to hear Only Love Can Break Your Heart again, as a reminder of what a fabulous (and fabulously different) cover St Etienne did of that song in the 90s.
I don't recall listening to Neil Young before but having now heard him I'm disappointed. Musically the album is OK but I found Neil's voice too weak, and even whiney at times. When harmonising with others it was ok, but he didn't sound good singing solo.
I rate this album like 5/10 it was new for me Actually i didn't like it but also i didn't hate. But i like sound of guitar in this album My favourite song in this album is "southern man" i like the guitar and rhythm of this song So my rate is 5
Not the worst country album I have ever heard. Still a country album though. Not breaking the mould at all. "Don't let it bring you down" the one highlight, and MAYBE Birds.
The songs are decent but God the vocals are so bad. I really want a modern artist to redo the album with more musicality.
Mostly boring to me. I only really liked Sourhern Man.
God I thought I was done with Neil Young!!! On seeing his name my heart sank, which is never good before judging what you listen to.. this was not my least favorite NY album here but God I hate his whiny voice, it instantly ruins every track for me.
maybe just not for me
Understand, I think, why it's celebrated, but just not my favorite NY record.
Pleasant enough, just don't like his voice.
so whiny omg girl whatever
Quite forgettabl
From my previous Neil Young review (that one with Crazy Horse): "I have never been a big Neil Young fan, despite Pearl Jam's worship of him (and my one-time worship of them.) I don't DISlike his music, and I like him in interviews, but his stuff just doesn't do much for me." I think a big part of my problem is his voice. I like the lyrics and I like the music, but delivered by his voice it just doesn't move me. I'm somehow able to enjoy Bob Dylan, Billy Corgan, and Tom Waits singing but I guess Neil Young is where I draw the line, lol.
2.5 imo
I was looking forward to this album but it was a bit underwhelming. Couple ofbgood songs (Only Love... and Southern Man) but few other stand outs.
Some good songs on here like Southern Man, and nice guitar work too, but Neil Young has the voice of an 80 year old shrew.
Meh
Don’t love Neil Young’s voice. After listening to other albums, this one felt the most basic and least entertaining. Wouldn’t do it again.
Real folksy. Not my particular cup of tea
Meh, too much folk.
Didn't do that much for me. Sort of tuned out and only realised it had finished when something else came on.
Says a lot that only 2 of these songs made it on the Decade album. I won’t be back to this album.
I just don't like his voice. I can't get past it..Using the Flugelhorn on the title track was kinda boss though....
country folk+ rock j'ai pas trop aimé je n'ai pas fini
Hm. Honestly, I was expecting to really love Neil Young. Once upon a time, this sort of music (Crosby, Stills, & Nash; Buffalo Springfield; John Martyn) was all I would ever listen to. Maybe Neil Young is just the worst of the bunch to me? I mean, holy hell, that voice! I consider myself a progressive guy, but - grow a pair buddy! Hooooooly shit, do you ever stop whining! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the lyrics (actually, I love them) and I appreciate the musicianship, but my god is he insufferable to listen to. Fave songs: - Don't Let It Bring You Down - When You Dance I Can Really Love
brah this was ass
A fairly boring listen for me. I feel that I may not be the target audience so couldn't get into the country repetition.
Overall - kinda meh! Neil Young's voice is lovely but not to my taste, and most of these songs just kinda washed over me without leaving much of an impresssion. Best songs: "Southern Man" "Birds" Best Lyric: "Tomorrow, see the things that never come today"
I preferred the songs that were less country since I didn't really like their vocal style and I generally don't listen to that genre so I'm unfamiliar with it. I preferred the more upbeat songs in the album.
Globalement chiant. Déçue par Neil.
This is my forth Neil Young related project. The initial one was from Buffalo Springfield and the other to from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, so this marks my first solo album from him and also the one I didn't like. I can't tell what's the difference in his singing in comparition with the other projects, but I didn't like it this time. Maybe is not the vocals, but more the tone of this record, as it feels very dull and flat. The majority of the songs felt way too melodramatic for my taste and the instrumenation felt a bit bland, without doing anything that I thought was interesting A positive thing I can say about this album is that the it has variety. I didn't felt like all the tracks were the same, and to that I can add that I liked some of the songs, with 'Souther Man' being the one that I liked the most. Neil's voice in this track is a bit more powerful in comparition with the rest of the tracklist, and it also features a nice use of the piano with a great melody to accompany the guitar solo. Nevertheless, my feelings about this project are not certainly very positive. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a bad experience, but I truly don't feel like returning to this ever again.
After the Gold Rush has some good songs, but Neil Young’s whiny voice makes it a bit hard to enjoy.
I'm not old or American enough to enjoy this. It's just... okay. Kevin thinks it "not very interesting".
ovo je glazbeno dobro, al glas mi je čas blago a čas potpuno nepodnošljiv. zavija li ga zavija. jebiga
Wow "After the Gold Rush" sure is whiney. This just makes me want to listen to America. It was listenable, but I didn't enjoy any of it. A 2.
I like his voice! Great album, but pretty forgettable too
3/10
2.5/5 chill and emotional but a bit too slow and not very engaging and I don't like the singing style
Boring, whiny stuff. "Southern Man" was pretty good though.
I don't like Neil Young.
I am extremely tired of this man getting foisted on us.
Lyrically strong, can’t stand his voice
"After the Gold Rush" is a a little lack-luster. "Southern Man" puts this album on the list. I do like the softy title track too though. Everything else doesn't do much. Really can't say more about the record...2.05 stars.
Mournful Muppet Music.
Not bad. I'm not a Neil Young fan. I don't like this album but, I understand why people do. Folk music, for me, gets boring and repetitive, and the same can be said about this album. I'm sure his lyrics are somewhat poignant, but the music isn't interesting enough to care.
Just like Bob Dylan, with multiple entries Neil Young is back. I dont really get his appeal. He has some good songs, but the rest... annoying or dime in a dozen. It's not for me
I didn't fall in love or under the spell of this apparently legendary album.
I’m not a big fan of this album as a whole. To me, it feels way less warm than Harvest. Neil Young’s voice here is higher-pitched, even kind of screechy at times, and the songs are often pretty mellow, which doesn’t really do it for me. The two more rock-ish tracks are really nice, but that’s not enough to make the album a success in my eyes.
I don't his voice and the backing instrumental doesn't feel very different song to song. I could probably like an album like this, but not this one.
Extra star for southern man, otherwise 1 star. Hard to listen.
I like a lot of Neil Young stuff, but found this hard to get into.
boring and quite unimportant
not as good as i thought it would be, Turns out I really dont like Neil Young all that much
Goodness I didn’t like this at all
Not a huge Niel Young fan, and I didnt enjoy this album. Its seems to be the start of when his sound is very high pitched and light on instrumentation (dare I say "whiney"?). Not a lot of hits to carry the album either. Overall- fine, not for me
Can recognise how influential Neil Young is with his song lyrics. But his style of vocals don’t appeal to me and I’m not really drawn to laidback/minimalist instrumentals. I don’t want to judge his music on just one album, but unfortunately this one didn’t draw me into becoming a Neil Young fan
2.5-5
Tell Me Why (7/10) After the Gold Rush (5/10) Only Love Can Break Your Heart (6/10) Southern Man (8/10) Till the Morning Comes (N/A) Oh, Lonesome Me (6/10) Don’t Let it Bring You Down (5/10) Birds (5/10) When You Dance I Can Really Love (7/10) I Believe In You (6/10) Cripple Creek Ferry (N/A) 6.1/10
No complaints, but even less compliments. It would be fine on a better day, but today was not that day
Bro said "I seen your black man coming around, swear by god im going to cut him down" Excuse me sir???? I was vibing at first but after this line it was hard to listen too. race is such an integral part of american history and to hear a line like this hurts
I absolutely hate the voice. It sounds too whiny and high-pitched.
His voice kind of annoying. 4/10
Not really a Neil Young fan, this one kind of floated by in the background
I’m not a Neil young guy. I just realized I can’t stand his singing on “after the gold rush”. This is one of those moments where I don’t get how he has been so popular. There are good things here song wise, the voice is nails down a chalkboard to me. Only love can break your heart is an amazing song. The rest of this is mediocre. I also like Helpless. I don’t know why I find this album so polarizing song wise. I either love it or hate it.
Don't mind it but don't love it either
Was ok.
Hate this. Third Neil Young album and its not getting better….
again, quivery voice. ugh
they call him 0011 0 interesting musical ideas 0 good vocal performances 11 boring songs is neil young a lyrics merchant ⁉️
Mined out
Damn I do not get the love this mans music gets
Honestly, never really liked his music.
It’s fine, just fine. Explains every Neil Young fan, something for you and your sweetie. When he uses a guitar effect it’s gonna be noticeable. Whatever.
It was alright, it's the 70's and it's Neil Young... not my cup of tea but not offensive
Like thinking to yourself that lady is hot. Then they turn around and its some soft guy with a beard. Your disappointed. So much promise. You made an error. No harm done I guess. Didn't know Neil before and still wont...I must walk away. Sorry. To be serious a second it's like Mickey mouse having an orgasim. An articulate Mickey mouse I might add.
Too slow/low energy
The more Neil Young albums I get the less I like him. They all sound the same.
Uuugghhh….what a whiney little bitch
.25 .5 .5 0 .75
I mean it was fine. But I didn't feel any particular way about it.
Disco chill. Para escuchar tranquilamente. La voz de Neil Young es peculiar. No es un disco que despertó demasiado, un álbum en su mayoría plano.
2.5
Not a big fan of Neil Young's voice, so listening to it for the full album was a bit of a struggle. I think I would've liked the songs more with a different voice, and preferred the ones where he was harmonized/paired with less grating vocals. Highlights: Southern Man, When You Dance Overall: 2/5
Southern man Old man
‘Critics were not immediately impressed; the 1970 review in Rolling Stone magazine by Langdon Winner was negative, with Winner feeling that, "none of the songs here rise above the uniformly dull surface." ‘ Agreed
Лёгкая ненапряжная, вероятно много смысла в словах. Не зашло 3/10 ещё раз не хотела бы прослушать
I don't know what to think about this guy. We sang his songs, back in the day, he has written some great songs over the years. But that voice ...
Just bored me to death
It's ok considering other stuff he has on this list. I didn't like it that much, but I didn't hate it.
Couple of hits, not my jam 2.5
Oh, the anticipation! - Will this album be any different than all. the. other. Neil. Young. albums. on this list? I usually can listen to a Neil Young song exactly for as long as it takes for him to start singing - the whiny voice is just more than I can bear. So this album is already off to a bad start, because on the opener Tell Me Why, the intro is exactly 2 seconds long. OK, skipping this track. Track 2 - After the Gold Rush manages to hold my interest for a respectable 10 seconds until I am confronted with the same dilemma: the song sounds as if it coud be good, but is immediately ruined by THE WHINE. I come to the conclusion that each and every track will have Young singing on it at some point, and so I'm skipping the entire album. What were those people in the 70s thinking? .... or smoking ... ? 2/5
I can ignore the poor technical singing but unfortunately I don't find his singing particular emotive either. It isn't bad, just doesn't appeal to me because of this.
Meh, I can't deal with his voice. I looked up to see who the lady was singing After the Gold Rush (it was him). I was able to finish the album, but I wouldn't listen to it again.
bros voice kinda annoying on some songs. I'm sure this a top album of all time or something but his voice makes me want to scooter ankle myself at those parts. Southern man a nice song tho. 2/5
Ugh. Another Neil Young whiny slog fest. He's so divisive. I know people who absolutely love Neil Young by himself, in Crazy Horse, in Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Every time, I give him a chance and just don't get on with it. It always strikes me as slow and whiny. I get it, the political commentary is good, but the music just sucks to me. I didn’t hate it, so that’s plus one.
One or two good ones, but overall meh
Voice is mid
ugggggghhhhh. his voice. I just can't get past his voice.
Songs with words that "actually mean something" only matter if they don't send you off to snoozeville.
Decent album. A few gems. But felt more like background.
Meh. Old country is not my thing.
Po "Ragged Glory" chciałem pozostać jak najdalej Neila Younga na jak najdłuższy czas. Dlatego zachowałem go niemalże na sam koniec odsłuchiwania zaległości.
Listening to Neil Young sing is a bit like eating cilantro—it’s definitely not for everyone. His voice? A unique blend of a haunted harmonica and a yodeling ghost. This is the second Neil Young album so far, and I have to ask: is 'no one sounds like him' supposed to be a compliment? Because I can confirm—no one should sound like him. That said, I get it, kinda. The songs have heart, and the lyrics clearly mean something to him (though deciphering them can feel like a treasure hunt in an emotional minefield). Tracks like 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' made me pause, maybe even feel things. But then, the next track would pull me back into Neil’s falsetto vortex of existential whining.
Not my cup of tea.
His voice goes through me. The harmonies are really pretty but Neil Young’s vocal performance on this is abysmal and annoying at best. He keeps trying to do this shitty vibrato, sickening.
Another album by Neil Young with 2 good songs and a lot of filler but hey its Neil Young so definitely have to hear it before you die.
Too much of the falsetto Neil on this one. Not a fan. Also this is my second Neil Young album this week. The fact that I consider this too much does not bode well for his rating.
Just not for me
I'm sorry, but I just don't like Neil Young's voice.
Ah, country and folk. I've gone to considerable trouble trying to get into this type of music. Just a few outlaw country artists have made the cut so far. I'm not lyrically inclined and most vocals are just another instrument, which is why Young's voice, especially his high pitched yowls, rub me the wrong way. In addition a mere acoustic guitar or piano does not cut if for me. I found this album utterly boring. I basically forgot I had music playing and it melds into the background, until Youngs wailing brings him back to focus. Even the rockier songs are starting to irritate me towards the end.
So today was my fourth Neil Young album from this generator and I got one yesterday too that I didn’t listen to 😅 What is going on?! And I think there’s more to come 😩There’s only so much of that falsetto that I can handle at a given time. This album was ok, better than yesterday’s. I had given up after two or three songs yesterday, because it was just not enjoyable. Today’s was a bit better. The title track is good and so is “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.” I’ve always liked that one. “Birds” was a nice song too and of course “Southern Man” is great in all its condescension. Not really much else to say about this album. Neil Young is good in CSNY, but to listen to his voice over and over on his own album is a bit much for me
boring trash besides 2 songs bro
Probably the most listenable Young album. I think the problem is his voice is incredibly grating if not partially covered by additional sound. It took looking up his bio to understand why he keeps showing up.
lyrics are good but singing was awful for me
Now understanding why his parents called him Neil, had me on my knees begging for it to stop.
Sounds like Towelie. Glad it was only half an hour. Thoroughly enjoyed Southern Man though. Loved it. When you can dance, you can really love - also a good song
my fifth album in the crosby/stills/nash/young extended universe. as with the others i dont have much to say in the way of compliments or complaints. its extremely bland but its an easy listen given the short runtime. hopefully I dont have too many of these left on the list
I used to really enjoy this album years ago. At this time in my life, I find even a half-hour block of Neil to be exhausting. I still think it’s one of his more cohesive albums, and there are some songs that resonate with me to this day, but I wouldn’t have put this on if the list didn’t do it for me.
Songs I know: 0 Songs i like: hard to say, just sounded like one continuous track Songs that could have been ripped straight from a car insurance advert: 2 Never really listened to any NY, like his style and album sounds decent although it was the remaster
Started late in the day, didn't have a lot of time to focus on it, ultimately didn't finish it and it didn't grab me enough to make me really care to. "I hope Neil Young will remember: A southern man don't need him around anyhow."
Não é meu tipo de música. Realmente nenhuma música se destacou para mim.
Hokey, but not in a charming way
Okay, I think I still understand Neil Young a bit better now. This is not my jam, but I don't hate it.
After The Goldrush is more of the same from Neil Young, no shock there. His singing is ludicrously high and bad for a lot of it, Southern Man is a good song but mostly for the guitar work, I've never really 'got' him and this 2/5 effort won't help that much.
I did not know that Only Love Can Break Your Heart was a Neil Young song. His version is nowhere near as good at St Etienne's though. Don't think I can do better than the review in Rolling Stone when this came out: "none of the songs here rise above the uniformly dull surface." The man can't sing particularly well, the songs and lyrics don't stand out to me, I just don't get the adulation. 2/5.
2 to 3
Setting aside the fact that there really don't need to be 9 Neil Young albums on this list, this definitely is not one of his best. I think this album only serves to highlight Young's mediocre singing voice, and the songwriting is pretty lackluster.
Eh, kinda boring
Not for me, nothing standout.
muppet ass mf
2.5, a bit too slow.
2/5
In January 2022, Young demanded that Spotify pull his tracks off its service in protest of the company's failure to curb Covid misinformation in “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast. He said Spotify “can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” Spotify removed Young's songs on Jan 26. In a letter posted on his Neil Young Archives website titled "My Return to Low Res Spotify," the Canadian singer-songwriter explained his choice to put his music back on the platform. "My decision comes as music services Apple and Amazon have started serving the same disinformation podcast features I had opposed at Spotify," he wrote. "I cannot just leave Apple and Amazon, like I did Spotify, because my music would have very little streaming outlet to music lovers at all, so I have returned to Spotify, in sincere hopes that Spotify sound quality will improve and people will be able to hear and feel all the music as we made it. Qobuz and Tidal, where my music is presented, are all high res as well." You have bills to pay, we heard you, but you're still hypocritical... "Keep on rocking in a free world", unless I disagree with something you said...
Kuuntelin, mitään ei jäänyt mieleen.
To my shock, his voice was not nearly as annoying as I usually find it. Towards the end I started to feel agitated at his singing but this album allowed me to recognize the skills Mr. Neil has apart from his supposed good voice. I enjoyed slightly but I just really can’t ignore his voice. I really do understand his incredible incredible influence and I am like a grain of rice amongst bags of rice who support him but I just can’t.
Maybe I'm a loser but aside from title track and southern man pretty forgettable
Neil Young's music would sound better if Neil Young wasn't singing
35/100 - some good songs. Bit old school for me
What is it people see in this guy? I don’t get it. He can’t sing. He doesn’t do anything spectacular on the guitar. Am I missing something?
Ok vibes; annoying vocals
Kind of lame and way too mopey. Could have used a few more months before getting another Neil Young album on this list.
Would be better with a less annoying vocalist.
