Really enjoyed the opening track. The title track's falsetto is quite grating. Only Love Can Break Your Heart is far superior when Saint Etienne are singing it. Got a bit bored.

Neil Young has really run the gamut for me... and this is the low point. Not necessarily bad low, but I didn't connect with this one.

One thing the generator definitely achieved was to teach me that my appreciation of Neil Young‘s music was way too naive. Before subscribing here, I was working with the assumption that his take on Folk rock was pretty ok and worth an occasional listen - turns out I can’t stand this Boomer crap.

I was pleased to see Neil Young come up on 1001 albums because After the Gold Rush is an album I’ve been wanting to listen to properly for years. I’d tried it now and again but never really enjoyed it. And yet some artists I love (eg Thom Yorke of Radiohead) are avowed fans of NY and this album in particular. But…I still don’t really get it. I don’t care for his voice and I didn’t find the lyrics particularly insightful nor the music particularly interesting. The song Southern Man is pretty good. And the song When You Dance…ditto It was also nice to hear Only Love Can Break Your Heart again, as a reminder of what a fabulous (and fabulously different) cover St Etienne did of that song in the 90s.

I don't recall listening to Neil Young before but having now heard him I'm disappointed. Musically the album is OK but I found Neil's voice too weak, and even whiney at times. When harmonising with others it was ok, but he didn't sound good singing solo.

I rate this album like 5/10 it was new for me Actually i didn't like it but also i didn't hate. But i like sound of guitar in this album My favourite song in this album is "southern man" i like the guitar and rhythm of this song So my rate is 5

Not the worst country album I have ever heard. Still a country album though. Not breaking the mould at all. "Don't let it bring you down" the one highlight, and MAYBE Birds.

The songs are decent but God the vocals are so bad. I really want a modern artist to redo the album with more musicality.

God I thought I was done with Neil Young!!! On seeing his name my heart sank, which is never good before judging what you listen to.. this was not my least favorite NY album here but God I hate his whiny voice, it instantly ruins every track for me.

From my previous Neil Young review (that one with Crazy Horse): "I have never been a big Neil Young fan, despite Pearl Jam's worship of him (and my one-time worship of them.) I don't DISlike his music, and I like him in interviews, but his stuff just doesn't do much for me." I think a big part of my problem is his voice. I like the lyrics and I like the music, but delivered by his voice it just doesn't move me. I'm somehow able to enjoy Bob Dylan, Billy Corgan, and Tom Waits singing but I guess Neil Young is where I draw the line, lol.

Hm. Honestly, I was expecting to really love Neil Young. Once upon a time, this sort of music (Crosby, Stills, & Nash; Buffalo Springfield; John Martyn) was all I would ever listen to. Maybe Neil Young is just the worst of the bunch to me? I mean, holy hell, that voice! I consider myself a progressive guy, but - grow a pair buddy! Hooooooly shit, do you ever stop whining! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the lyrics (actually, I love them) and I appreciate the musicianship, but my god is he insufferable to listen to. A fairly boring listen for me. I feel that I may not be the target audience so couldn't get into the country repetition.

Overall - kinda meh! Neil Young's voice is lovely but not to my taste, and most of these songs just kinda washed over me without leaving much of an impresssion. Best songs: "Southern Man" "Birds" Best Lyric: "Tomorrow, see the things that never come today"

I preferred the songs that were less country since I didn't really like their vocal style and I generally don't listen to that genre so I'm unfamiliar with it. I preferred the more upbeat songs in the album.

This is my forth Neil Young related project. The initial one was from Buffalo Springfield and the other to from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, so this marks my first solo album from him and also the one I didn't like. I can't tell what's the difference in his singing in comparition with the other projects, but I didn't like it this time. Maybe is not the vocals, but more the tone of this record, as it feels very dull and flat. The majority of the songs felt way too melodramatic for my taste and the instrumenation felt a bit bland, without doing anything that I thought was interesting A positive thing I can say about this album is that the it has variety. I didn't felt like all the tracks were the same, and to that I can add that I liked some of the songs, with 'Souther Man' being the one that I liked the most. Neil's voice in this track is a bit more powerful in comparition with the rest of the tracklist, and it also features a nice use of the piano with a great melody to accompany the guitar solo. Nevertheless, my feelings about this project are not certainly very positive. I wouldn't go as far as to say it was a bad experience, but I truly don't feel like returning to this ever again.

After the Gold Rush has some good songs, but Neil Young’s whiny voice makes it a bit hard to enjoy.

En skiva som har toppar och dalar. När det är bra är det riktigt bra och fint men i perioder är det riktigt trist. Lite för många låtar där man tidigt börjar undra hur nästa låt låter. Nästan att jag inte klarar av hans röst. Men vissa låtar är tillräckligt bra för att man ska kunna se förbi det. ”Birds” otrolig! Svårt att se att jag ska komma tillbaka till albumet särskilt ofta. Därför bara en tvåa!

"After the Gold Rush" is a a little lack-luster. "Southern Man" puts this album on the list. I do like the softy title track too though. Everything else doesn't do much. Really can't say more about the record...2.05 stars.

Not bad. I'm not a Neil Young fan. I don't like this album but, I understand why people do. Folk music, for me, gets boring and repetitive, and the same can be said about this album. I'm sure his lyrics are somewhat poignant, but the music isn't interesting enough to care.

I didn't fall in love or under the spell of this apparently legendary album.

I’m not a big fan of this album as a whole. To me, it feels way less warm than Harvest. Neil Young’s voice here is higher-pitched, even kind of screechy at times, and the songs are often pretty mellow, which doesn’t really do it for me. The two more rock-ish tracks are really nice, but that’s not enough to make the album a success in my eyes.

I don't his voice and the backing instrumental doesn't feel very different song to song. I could probably like an album like this, but not this one.

I’m not a Neil young guy. I just realized I can’t stand his singing on “after the gold rush”. This is one of those moments where I don’t get how he has been so popular. There are good things here song wise, the voice is nails down a chalkboard to me. Only love can break your heart is an amazing song. The rest of this is mediocre. I also like Helpless. I don’t know why I find this album so polarizing song wise. I either love it or hate it.

Oh, the anticipation! - Will this album be any different than all. the. other. Neil. Young. albums. on this list? I usually can listen to a Neil Young song exactly for as long as it takes for him to start singing - the whiny voice is just more than I can bear. So this album is already off to a bad start, because on the opener Tell Me Why, the intro is exactly 2 seconds long. OK, skipping this track. Track 2 - After the Gold Rush manages to hold my interest for a respectable 10 seconds until I am confronted with the same dilemma: the song sounds as if it coud be good, but is immediately ruined by THE WHINE. I come to the conclusion that each and every track will have Young singing on it at some point, and so I'm skipping the entire album. What were those people in the 70s thinking? .... or smoking ... ? 2/5

Ugh. Another Neil Young whiny slog fest. He's so divisive. I know people who absolutely love Neil Young by himself, in Crazy Horse, in Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Every time, I give him a chance and just don't get on with it. It always strikes me as slow and whiny. I get it, the political commentary is good, but the music just sucks to me. I didn’t hate it, so that’s plus one.

Just not for me

I'm sorry, but I just don't like Neil Young's voice.

Ah, country and folk. I've gone to considerable trouble trying to get into this type of music. Just a few outlaw country artists have made the cut so far. I'm not lyrically inclined and most vocals are just another instrument, which is why Young's voice, especially his high pitched yowls, rub me the wrong way. In addition a mere acoustic guitar or piano does not cut if for me. I found this album utterly boring. I basically forgot I had music playing and it melds into the background, until Youngs wailing brings him back to focus. Even the rockier songs are starting to irritate me towards the end.

So today was my fourth Neil Young album from this generator and I got one yesterday too that I didn’t listen to 😅 What is going on?! And I think there’s more to come 😩There’s only so much of that falsetto that I can handle at a given time. This album was ok, better than yesterday’s. I had given up after two or three songs yesterday, because it was just not enjoyable. Today’s was a bit better. The title track is good and so is “Only Love Can Break Your Heart.” I’ve always liked that one. “Birds” was a nice song too and of course “Southern Man” is great in all its condescension. Not really much else to say about this album. Neil Young is good in CSNY, but to listen to his voice over and over on his own album is a bit much for me

Probably the most listenable Young album. I think the problem is his voice is incredibly grating if not partially covered by additional sound. It took looking up his bio to understand why he keeps showing up.

my fifth album in the crosby/stills/nash/young extended universe. as with the others i dont have much to say in the way of compliments or complaints. its extremely bland but its an easy listen given the short runtime. hopefully I dont have too many of these left on the list

I used to really enjoy this album years ago. At this time in my life, I find even a half-hour block of Neil to be exhausting. I still think it’s one of his more cohesive albums, and there are some songs that resonate with me to this day, but I wouldn’t have put this on if the list didn’t do it for me.

After The Goldrush is more of the same from Neil Young, no shock there. His singing is ludicrously high and bad for a lot of it, Southern Man is a good song but mostly for the guitar work, I've never really 'got' him and this 2/5 effort won't help that much.

I did not know that Only Love Can Break Your Heart was a Neil Young song. His version is nowhere near as good at St Etienne's though. Don't think I can do better than the review in Rolling Stone when this came out: "none of the songs here rise above the uniformly dull surface." The man can't sing particularly well, the songs and lyrics don't stand out to me, I just don't get the adulation. 2/5.

Setting aside the fact that there really don't need to be 9 Neil Young albums on this list, this definitely is not one of his best. I think this album only serves to highlight Young's mediocre singing voice, and the songwriting is pretty lackluster.

To my shock, his voice was not nearly as annoying as I usually find it. Towards the end I started to feel agitated at his singing but this album allowed me to recognize the skills Mr. Neil has apart from his supposed good voice. I enjoyed slightly but I just really can’t ignore his voice. I really do understand his incredible incredible influence and I am like a grain of rice amongst bags of rice who support him but I just can’t.

I had to stop at "After the Gold Rush." I'm certain that this album is good if you like Neil Young. The days that a Young album shows up are basically vacation days. I know I'm in for a two or three out of five and I know I'm not going to enjoy it.

Not bad, but I don't love the tambre of his voice. 3 ish. Definitely a 2 star actually. I feel like his voice reminds me of a cat in heat. Hard to resist the urge to turn him off, except when he's not singing it doesn't bug me as much.

Another Neil Young album... I am honestly starting to get really tired of him. Granted, he has made some good songs, and some albums of his are definitely good (like 'Harvest Moon'), and perhaps he has been more influential over the years than I recognize, but I think he is criminally overrated. This album is a perfect example of that. I don't even know what it's doing on this list. It's extremely beige - even below mediocre. No songs stands out. His singing is sub-par for what I'd consider professional. The only good thing is that it's fairly short. Weak 2.

southern man has stereo stuff going on . guitar solo only on left. that was interesting. i donot really like anything else abt this album. bt it was acoustic guitar, piano, electric guitar and was cool to notice how the song is not just one strum on an acoustic guitar. different instrument are doing their own stufs

Not something I would listen to again

Our 7th(!) Neil Young album on this list. Come on. For me, the entire purpose of this project was expanding my horizons. Not listening to the same artists over and over, however influential that artist may have been. The title track is in my opinions one of the very best Neil Young ever wrote. That track aside, the album is possibly the worst out of his 7 I've now listened to start to finish.

This album has songs with very pretty, rich lyrics, but the sound itself it's not very good, especially in the track that named the album. My favorite tracks are Southern Man and I Believe in You.

The music was good, I enjoyed the lyrics and melodies and enjoy lots of music in this genre however Mr. Youngs vocals were grating. It felt like a tiny little rat was clawing at my ear drums.

I really liked southern man, but nothing else really stood out to me.

Listening on YouTube really kills this album. Having to hear 2 ads after a 2 minute song really hurts the flow. Regardless tho I didn’t get much out of it. Rating: 2.4

Man, I really don't like his voice. How did this ever get past the guards? He's fine when embedded in group harmonies, or helped by instruments. There are some really nice songs on here but I just hate this singing style so, so much.

Just like "Tonight's The Night" I did not enjoy this. I really dislike Neil's singing voice, it sounds off key and quite whiny. The music and lyrics sound quite nice but the voice just ruins it for me.

Content is not accesible

Partly this is a vote based on how hard it is to listen to this album overall. Not on Spotify, and I am not paying another music service just to be able to listen to it in full. Amazon makes you shuffle it, but then adds in songs from OTHER ALBUMS into the shuffle, which is just insanity. But also, man, Neil Young just sounds like he is whining into the microphone half the time, and this is just dull. I think the original critical reaction to it was spot on, in that it was a waste of time. Not sure why they thought it got better with age.

I just don't like Neil Young. His music doesn't speak to me and I find it really boring. I've heard so much of his music and I've tried, but it's a no for me Dawg.

There's some decent song-writing here, but I just couldn't get past his singing. He has such a strange voice. It almost sounds like a joke. I've never heard much Neil Young before; probably because he refuses to put his music on Spotify because Joe Rogan is on there - pretty hilarious reason. Either way, I'm not mad about it because I think other artists in the same genre are much better.

Neil Young falls into the category of great songwriter, but I just don't like his singing voice.

This wasn't quite as disappointing as his album, Tonight's The Night, but this is still a solid, "meh." If I stretch my imagination and picture that I might one day be in a very particular mood, I might put this album on again. However, if I'm ever in that type of mood, I still think I'd rather listen to something else.

2 Ohhhhhhhh this is what people are talking about when they complain about Neil Young’s voice. Yeah, when you strip back the instrumentation, his voice is pretty unbearable. Like, I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to take the title track seriously - he sounds like a cartoon character. Fortunately, the songs that feature more of a backing band like When You Dance I Can Really Love and Southern Man are more enjoyable, the latter of which I appreciated in particular due to its callout of racism in the South - a topic apparently so provocative that it prompted Lynyrd Skynyrd to clapback on Sweet Home Alabama. Not a ton much else to say - was pretty disappointed with this one. For only being 33 minutes, this felt like it went on kind of long - there’s just really not a ton going on that’s particularly interesting. I really started this list off thinking I might be a Neil Young fan, and our last two entries have me now convinced otherwise. I would definitely say the man has his moments, but he’s no musical genius, and I don’t see myself going out of my way to pull up the YouTube app on my phone in order to put his music on again in the future.

My first exposure to Neil Young, very lyrical, easy listening. 2*, don't think I'd revisit but I didn't hate it which is why it gets more than 1*. I liked Southern Man.

Here are my thoughts starting out: - Neil Young is a weird guy - It’s annoying he doesn’t put his music on spotify. Had to listen on YouTube - His voice is annoying and whiny The music was good. I have never connected with Neil Young’s stuff despite trying, and that continues to this album (with the exception of “Old Man” from another album which is an excellent song). This one wasn’t as bad as I thought, and I realize I did go into this album with some bias and preconceived notions, haha. I’ll give this a 2.5 star, probably leaning toward two.

3 albums already from Neil and not one Townes Van Zandt album, yet? I don't get the appeal at all.

I hear the influence he has had in other musicians but this ain't for me.

Good compositions and easy to listen to. Neil Young's high and sometimes shakey vocals are an acquired taste. Ultimately, there are better albums for the same musical vibe. I found this album a little boring.

First, I will note that this is the 8th album with Young's name on it that's served to me over here. We can probably all (?) agree this is a bit of an overkill. As for this album's music: kind of boring, I guess?

I've had a couple of Neil Young albums on here and so far they've been hit and miss. This one was a miss. Bit too countryish, not anything to really grab or turn your head. Not in the right mood for it so not even going to give it a second chance. 2.5*

This was better than I expected. Neil Young does some much better with harmony and there was a lot more harmony in this one. His voice is a spice, not a dish. That being said, I wouldn't voluntarily listen to this again.

Starts of shit with some kind of summer camp prebubescent boy singing about love. It gets slightly better as more than just 1 other instrument is used. However it still remains that horrendously slow, whiny sing and songwriter music that I utterly despise. 2.5/10

This is the 7th Neil Young album served to me by this list. What is happening here? Is Neil Young a sponsor of this book/website? You cannot convince me that this man has 7 albums worthy of this list. Are all 40 of this guys albums on this list? Somebody has to take a stand here. I know people like Neil Young but god damn, I don't think the Beatles have 7 albums on this list and they are WAY better than Neil Young. Please, I'm begging you, do not make me listen to another of this mans albums.

I think as a songwriter and musician Neil is great. For some reason I just don’t think his actual voice is special so this won’t get a super high rating none of the songs really spoke to me but I enjoyed Southern Man

I don’t know who would ever want to listen to a Neil Young album. He’s one of those songwriters who shouldn’t sing his own songs. When I was listening to After the Gold Rush, I was wishing it was k.d. lang’s version which is so much better.

His voice is excruciating to listen to. Even though it's pretty short, I found myself wanting it to end faster. The song I liked the most was "When You Dance I Can Really Love" but I wouldn't willingly listen to this album again.

Nope. I got seconds into the first two songs before I had to skip them. I know the song Southern Man and I didn’t hate that because it’s not just Neil singing. I cannot stand his voice alone. It is awful. Truly terrible. Whiny, abrasive, pathetic. I can see why people like certain music, artists, bands, etc. but I have never understood his popularity. With After the Goldrush, I'm struck by the realization that this era of Young sounds a lot like early Wayne Coyne. But I gotta say, this isn't my jam. I've liked Harvest, but for me AFG falls flat. It's just a a bit tedious, sparse and repetitive, but not in a good way.
