Reviews (page 11 of 11)

could i write poetry to this? n

I had to stop at "After the Gold Rush." I'm certain that this album is good if you like Neil Young. The days that a Young album shows up are basically vacation days. I know I'm in for a two or three out of five and I know I'm not going to enjoy it.

Not one of my favourite NY albums.

I was bored + didn’t finish it

Not my favourite

Not a fan. I’m sure that comment is sacrilegious.

Really enjoyed it

Not bad

Decent easy listening. I felt like this album was fine, definitely preferred the slower songs to the poppier ones. Also not a huge fan of Neil Young's voice. Overall a fine and musically safe album. Probably not something I'd come back to, but okay enough for one listen. Top tracks: Birds, I Believe in You

Not bad, but I don't love the tambre of his voice. 3 ish. Definitely a 2 star actually. I feel like his voice reminds me of a cat in heat. Hard to resist the urge to turn him off, except when he's not singing it doesn't bug me as much.

Vocals are still hit-or-miss for me, but I enjoyed the more experimental production on this.

Did not really do it for me. Neil Young's voice was kind of annoying on most of the songs and it did not have the guitar that I want from Neil. I enjoy some of his other folky albums more than this. Not really bad but I don't think I'm revisiting

Gute Aufnahme. Ich mag die Stimme nicht.

neil young sucks

Another Neil Young album... I am honestly starting to get really tired of him. Granted, he has made some good songs, and some albums of his are definitely good (like 'Harvest Moon'), and perhaps he has been more influential over the years than I recognize, but I think he is criminally overrated. This album is a perfect example of that. I don't even know what it's doing on this list. It's extremely beige - even below mediocre. No songs stands out. His singing is sub-par for what I'd consider professional. The only good thing is that it's fairly short. Weak 2.

southern man has stereo stuff going on . guitar solo only on left. that was interesting. i donot really like anything else abt this album. bt it was acoustic guitar, piano, electric guitar and was cool to notice how the song is not just one strum on an acoustic guitar. different instrument are doing their own stufs

Not something I would listen to again

Our 7th(!) Neil Young album on this list. Come on. For me, the entire purpose of this project was expanding my horizons. Not listening to the same artists over and over, however influential that artist may have been. The title track is in my opinions one of the very best Neil Young ever wrote. That track aside, the album is possibly the worst out of his 7 I've now listened to start to finish.

Wasn't really doing it for me

This album has songs with very pretty, rich lyrics, but the sound itself it's not very good, especially in the track that named the album. My favorite tracks are Southern Man and I Believe in You.

Not really my genre I don’t love his voice

2/5 - Never been my cup of tea but it's pleasant

2 - Super hueva

Most annoying voice in pop culture before Sam Smith arrived to steal the crown. Extra star for that one song everyone knows

I probably won't listen to this album again. Very Neil Young. Solid music all around. I liked Cripple Creek Ferry

While I appreciate that this album sounds well made and such, this style just isn't for me

This could be good if it wasn’t Neil Young

This wasn’t his worst. So that’s nice.

Not my Neil Young. The warbly falsetto was getting to me after a while. Would not pick this one up again.

It’s weird how we got the weird jam band album first and then we got this one and this one is bad because it also sounds like a jam band (and because Neil Young is singing). Some nice instrumentation though

I enjoyed his songwriting, but really did not enjoy his voice. I probably wouldn’t listen again.

I'm sorry I just don't like this guy's voice

slow and a bit shrill. 2

I was going to give it a 3 for being "average background music" but his whiny voice got harder and harder to listen to and then he even ruined "Oh Lonesome Me".

I get it, he's the man, still don't like his voice.

4.5/10

The music was good, I enjoyed the lyrics and melodies and enjoy lots of music in this genre however Mr. Youngs vocals were grating. It felt like a tiny little rat was clawing at my ear drums.

man never been a fan

neil haunted me early on in this challenge (28/11/2025)

I really liked southern man, but nothing else really stood out to me.

Listening on YouTube really kills this album. Having to hear 2 ads after a 2 minute song really hurts the flow. Regardless tho I didn’t get much out of it. Rating: 2.4

Man, I really don't like his voice. How did this ever get past the guards? He's fine when embedded in group harmonies, or helped by instruments. There are some really nice songs on here but I just hate this singing style so, so much.

Just like "Tonight's The Night" I did not enjoy this. I really dislike Neil's singing voice, it sounds off key and quite whiny. The music and lyrics sound quite nice but the voice just ruins it for me.

Sometimes Neil Young hits. Sometimes Neil Young wiffs.

I'm just not a Neil Young fan. This was super soft and not my bag, baby.

His voice is difficult to withstand. The music is a bit plain and uninspiring. Lyrics are the best part of it all, but again, difficult to listen to with the voice that is carrying them. I’ll leave Neil Young for others to enjoy.

Not bad but it’s quite uneventful

Fine. White man guitar. Insert shrug emoji.

An interesting country folk / rock album. It is unfortunate this album is also not on Spotify.

Nothing special on this album. Second Neil Young album on the list, and I stand by the fact he is a boring artist, with boring songs.

Moany man moany man gold and harvests and a miserable life.

I liked Only Love Can Break Your Heart. I suspect there is much to like on this album, but I got so damn tired of the whiny vocals.

I maintain the best Neil Young album is the soundtrack he did for Dead Man, the Jim Jarmusch movie from 1995. This is the album that is 100% instrumental. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR6mXTWbSEM #neilsvoiceruinsneilsalbums

Content is not accesible

Partly this is a vote based on how hard it is to listen to this album overall. Not on Spotify, and I am not paying another music service just to be able to listen to it in full. Amazon makes you shuffle it, but then adds in songs from OTHER ALBUMS into the shuffle, which is just insanity. But also, man, Neil Young just sounds like he is whining into the microphone half the time, and this is just dull. I think the original critical reaction to it was spot on, in that it was a waste of time. Not sure why they thought it got better with age.

I just don't like Neil Young. His music doesn't speak to me and I find it really boring. I've heard so much of his music and I've tried, but it's a no for me Dawg.

There's some decent song-writing here, but I just couldn't get past his singing. He has such a strange voice. It almost sounds like a joke. I've never heard much Neil Young before; probably because he refuses to put his music on Spotify because Joe Rogan is on there - pretty hilarious reason. Either way, I'm not mad about it because I think other artists in the same genre are much better.

it's ok

Was not a big fan of this one. A little to slow for me.

Not available

2/5 anodyne folk-rock with ocassionally gratting vocals - the one memorable thing.

eh, maybe you had to be there

Meh. Couple of classics but doesn't really do much for me. 2/5

Interesting - maybe a grower??

A true 2.5 for me. Love one song, hate the next. The Tao of Neil Young and I

Neil Young falls into the category of great songwriter, but I just don't like his singing voice.

This wasn't quite as disappointing as his album, Tonight's The Night, but this is still a solid, "meh." If I stretch my imagination and picture that I might one day be in a very particular mood, I might put this album on again. However, if I'm ever in that type of mood, I still think I'd rather listen to something else.

Best Songs: N/A Listen Again: No

I just really hate his voice.

Not really a vibe. bit of a nagging voice but not in the chill way

2 Ohhhhhhhh this is what people are talking about when they complain about Neil Young’s voice. Yeah, when you strip back the instrumentation, his voice is pretty unbearable. Like, I’m not sure how anyone is supposed to take the title track seriously - he sounds like a cartoon character. Fortunately, the songs that feature more of a backing band like When You Dance I Can Really Love and Southern Man are more enjoyable, the latter of which I appreciated in particular due to its callout of racism in the South - a topic apparently so provocative that it prompted Lynyrd Skynyrd to clapback on Sweet Home Alabama. Not a ton much else to say - was pretty disappointed with this one. For only being 33 minutes, this felt like it went on kind of long - there’s just really not a ton going on that’s particularly interesting. I really started this list off thinking I might be a Neil Young fan, and our last two entries have me now convinced otherwise. I would definitely say the man has his moments, but he’s no musical genius, and I don’t see myself going out of my way to pull up the YouTube app on my phone in order to put his music on again in the future.

Better than I expected but still no.

His voice is interesting, the songs were ok

WHAT I ENJOYED: some nice mellow classics, the sound is really lovely for the age of the record GRIPES: some of the vocals are especially giving Tiny Tim on this one; there doesn't seem like a lot of emotional range or variety to the music so you really have to be focused to give it a real listen (if you're easily distracted, like me.) RECCOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: Beirut, other Neil Young, mellow ballads #351 revealed / #496 rated

Some good

Didn’t hate it, didn’t like it either though

My first exposure to Neil Young, very lyrical, easy listening. 2*, don't think I'd revisit but I didn't hate it which is why it gets more than 1*. I liked Southern Man.

Here are my thoughts starting out: - Neil Young is a weird guy - It’s annoying he doesn’t put his music on spotify. Had to listen on YouTube - His voice is annoying and whiny The music was good. I have never connected with Neil Young’s stuff despite trying, and that continues to this album (with the exception of “Old Man” from another album which is an excellent song). This one wasn’t as bad as I thought, and I realize I did go into this album with some bias and preconceived notions, haha. I’ll give this a 2.5 star, probably leaning toward two.

3 albums already from Neil and not one Townes Van Zandt album, yet? I don't get the appeal at all.

I hear the influence he has had in other musicians but this ain't for me.

Couple good songs, but man the other ones are pretty horrible. Notably his voice on the first two songs about made me want to kick a puppy.

not really my jimmyjam

Neil whining in a high pitched voice. 2/5

meh, not interesting or engaging to me... like all the other neil young albums I've had generated so far. he has like three songs i like, i swear, i just haven't lucked into any of them yet D: favorites: tell me why

Good compositions and easy to listen to. Neil Young's high and sometimes shakey vocals are an acquired taste. Ultimately, there are better albums for the same musical vibe. I found this album a little boring.

Not a huge fan of his voice, and it’s not in Spotify, annoyingly. Not gonna listen to an ad every song.

Gutes Album, seine Stimme ist mir persönlich aber zu hoch.

Much respect... can't do him....

First, I will note that this is the 8th album with Young's name on it that's served to me over here. We can probably all (?) agree this is a bit of an overkill. As for this album's music: kind of boring, I guess?

Onhan tuo heppu osannut tehdä musaa ja aivan valtava tuotanto luotuna, mutta tyyli ei suoranaisesti osu omaan korvaan niin turha odottaa korkeita pisteitä. Perus OK.

Ei parasta Neilikkaa, tylsäksi kävi

yay, it's neil young again. sounding just like all the other neil young offerings. apparently neil has written 99% of the 1001 albums you should listen to.

Whoever decided this list loves Neil Young. I'm not arsed.

I've had a couple of Neil Young albums on here and so far they've been hit and miss. This one was a miss. Bit too countryish, not anything to really grab or turn your head. Not in the right mood for it so not even going to give it a second chance. 2.5*

Honestly it's not even that bad. I like this sort of things. Unfortunately his voice is unbearable

honestly not too impressed

He can't sing. The most positive thing I can say is I'm glad to be on the back of another one of far too many of his albums om the list.

This was better than I expected. Neil Young does some much better with harmony and there was a lot more harmony in this one. His voice is a spice, not a dish. That being said, I wouldn't voluntarily listen to this again.

Other than Southern Man, I can live without this album's existence. It does nothing for me.

I need something more fast paced dude. All these albums are so slow pick a good one for once man. The whole album was just a Piano Man rip-off.

embarrassing

Not a Neil young fan

I'm sure there is lyrical depth and good storytelling but I can't listen to this man. My god his voice is truly awful and I just can't get past it. 1/5.

Boring!!

Southern Man Don't Let it Bring You Down - ниче не добавил. Альбом не понравился.

I wish I could give this zero stars

I don't like

I dislike his high nasaly voice and I don't vibe with american folk music. Didn't finish it. Wasn't worth my time. 1/10

Starts of shit with some kind of summer camp prebubescent boy singing about love. It gets slightly better as more than just 1 other instrument is used. However it still remains that horrendously slow, whiny sing and songwriter music that I utterly despise. 2.5/10

Neil Young is boring.

Didn't like it

This is the 7th Neil Young album served to me by this list. What is happening here? Is Neil Young a sponsor of this book/website? You cannot convince me that this man has 7 albums worthy of this list. Are all 40 of this guys albums on this list? Somebody has to take a stand here. I know people like Neil Young but god damn, I don't think the Beatles have 7 albums on this list and they are WAY better than Neil Young. Please, I'm begging you, do not make me listen to another of this mans albums.

I think as a songwriter and musician Neil is great. For some reason I just don’t think his actual voice is special so this won’t get a super high rating none of the songs really spoke to me but I enjoyed Southern Man

boring and whiny. couldnt finish it

Terrible

I don’t know who would ever want to listen to a Neil Young album. He’s one of those songwriters who shouldn’t sing his own songs. When I was listening to After the Gold Rush, I was wishing it was k.d. lang’s version which is so much better.

Y otro disco de Neil Young. Supongo que quien hizo esta lista es sobrino de este señor. No lo soporto. Una vez más: no lo soporto.

His voice is excruciating to listen to. Even though it's pretty short, I found myself wanting it to end faster. The song I liked the most was "When You Dance I Can Really Love" but I wouldn't willingly listen to this album again.

not for me

Meh, no es de mi gusto.

Not my taste

Not for me

Nope. I got seconds into the first two songs before I had to skip them. I know the song Southern Man and I didn’t hate that because it’s not just Neil singing. I cannot stand his voice alone. It is awful. Truly terrible. Whiny, abrasive, pathetic. I can see why people like certain music, artists, bands, etc. but I have never understood his popularity. When I hear him sing it makes me want to punch something - preferably his face to shut him up. I wish I could leave negative stars as a review. 01-16-2026

Whiny voice. Plodding and repetitive.

I don’t particularly enjoy this album not really my kinda vibe

I enjoyed Southern Man, but would skip the majority of the album in the future.

Always struggled with Neil Young. His voice just has a fingernails on a blackboard sound to it. Songs probably are great. But I just can’t listen to it.

Nope not Neil young again

I cannot stand Neil Young’s voice

Probably the most overrated artist among critics. This guy is bad.

DNF did not like at all

Cool Strong Sad Sings album

Não gostei, muito devagar

With After the Goldrush, I'm struck by the realization that this era of Young sounds a lot like early Wayne Coyne. But I gotta say, this isn't my jam. I've liked Harvest, but for me AFG falls flat. It's just a a bit tedious, sparse and repetitive, but not in a good way.

Need some cheese with all this whine

Limp dick shit

Why tf is this fool allowed to sing. I can't sing and I can sing better than this. It sounds like someone doing a bad impression of a singer.

Third Neil Young album I come across in this list, and I’m already starting to suffer from Neil Young fatigue. According to the author of this list, he’s apparently as important to the history of music as the Beatles, since he’s been granted just as many albums (7, if you’re wondering) – which I find preposterous. Neil Young is not a bad artist, but let’s be serious for a moment. Anyway. This is clearly my least favorite Neil Young album. For some reason his voice is even more high-pitched and shrill than usual. It made me cringe so much I had a hard time listening to the end ; even my cat was annoyed, and ran away in horror when Neil started to sound like some weird redneck Farinelli. The songs are quite repetitive, following almost the same structure, and a couple of tracks are annoyingly cheesy ("Only Love Can Break Your Heart" was unbearable). I have much respect for some of Neil Young's albums, but this one was terrible. The whiny voice is an instant no for me.

I really wanted to like Neil Young, he’s such an iconic piece of music history. Unfortunately I can’t stand his voice. Or his style. Difficult listen.

I remember when I first listened to Alabama in that other hellish Young album... that was until I listened to Southern Man. Straight from the pit of hell. 0/5

I don’t like Neil Young. Songs are dull. He can’t sing.

Favorite song: Only Love Can Break Your Heart This is not my kind of music.

Nope not good, his voice is horrendous and he's a pompous jerk.

dreary.

I hate him. I understand why this is his most recognizable album though. There's actually music on here. It's not just him whining while someone practices a guitar in the background. But the lyrics are terrible and his voice is just so grating. I almost gave this a 2 but that live song near the end killed it.

115/1089 - What an awful voice. At least it was a short album.

Boring whiny voice that just don't work for me, brother.

Not a fan

MORE NEIL YOUNG I THINK THIS IS THE FOURTH NEIL YOUNG ALBUM IVE HAD. PLEASE STOP THIS MADNESS

I still hate Neil Young, but this is better than most of his other solo work. Highlights: "When You Dance I Can Really Love", the horn solo in "After the Gold Rush" Lows: His voice is the worst part. Especially on "Southern Man". Fucking awful.

I did not like his voice

He sucks

Absolutely shit. Worst album i've ever heard. Neil Young's voice is so fkn bad! rating: ⭐ [1/100]

I hate

Suffering. I have found out what genre I don't like, and it's called Neil Young. The best I have to say is that some of the instrumentals with the guitar in it are good, but then Neil starts singing and everything is ruined. Hell is a Cripple Creek Ferry.

It was dull and soulless to me...

I tried. I hate his voice Holy cow.

Not for me unfortunately. Won't be revisiting. 1/5.

Just not my thing

Some really great folk/rock music here, but I just can't handle Neil's voice. It just always sounds out of tune to me, even though I'm sure he's not. Only got to the 4th track... sorry Neil.

One of the most overrate artists ever. Cool but nothing great sound like he was fisted while singing. Horrible guitar player. Good writing thou. Just bad for me

Imagine a three year old whining that he's hungry, but his voice is super nasally, like he's got permanent allergies. But instead of whining that he's hungry, he's whining about being lonely & setting it to music. & people try to tell you it's good and he's a legend. No, I'll pass on the nasal whining set to flugelhorns.

Gammalt skit, inte min grej

me deu vontade de dormir chatissimo espero nunca mais ouvir na minha vida

pas mon style

Ugh another Neil Young record. Well let's get this over with. Hey wait a minute, this song is awesome! Oh my god do I finally like Neil Young? The next song answers that question. No, I don't like fucking Neil Young and his terrible voice and somehow worse band. He yet again tricks me with his 2 good song album and a bunch of junk surrounding them. Fucking asshole

Couldn't get through the album because I don't like Neil Young's voice.

I can't stand his voice

Not my thing, couldn't listen to that thin, reedy voice

I can't. His voice is sooo whiney. When he harmonizing is ok but it's like he's trying to sing way to high for his voice. Just no

Fuck Neil Young.

Good grief!

non mi piace per nulla

Typical whiny Neil Young. I don't like preachy music. Not a fan. Waaaaaaay too many albums related to him on this list. I really struggled to get through this album. Few gems on this album, and when they turn up they just remind you how someone else has covered them so much better than the original songwriter. Definitely won't be revisiting this album anytime soon.

0 stars is probably more appropriate

absolute offkey nonsense

YUCK Was there more than one song on this album? I kept hearing the same whiny drivel on a loop. The lyrics seemed to be intended to strike a chord...or was that just my tympanic membrane being bludgeoned?

Too much neil young over the past week

Neil Young sold out constantly and tried to hide it. He's a fake and his music sounds like it. I will not listen to Neil Young.

Oh great. Another whiny Neil Young album.

no pienso escuchar country

I found this very dull and kept zoning out even when giving it my full attention. Favourite track: Southern Man.

nah this exhausts me

No thanks! I get it, you want me to listen to every Neil young album.

I quite like the music but his voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

Boring old man. Getting sick of this guy

SURELY this is the last of the neil young. SURELY i am now free of his godawful little vocals

Don't like his voice or his style of music - no thank you

nope. can't do his voice, don't find the music interesting. not for me.

Geheel volgens verwachting, 1 ster

This is Neil Young's 7th album on this list that he has been apart of. This is too much. He cannot sing and his voice is annoying. Just everything is not good. Thankfully it was just over thirty minutes. Nothing really stood out. Not the worst album but difficult to give it a two. No need to return. Better to just avoid.

Not available on Spotify

Geht so

I can’t stand Neil Young. He’s a weird “pick me” lover boy. Music is pretty terrible.

No access on Spotify

Not really my thing.

I remember saying I need to listen to more Neil Young. I've changed my mind. I don't want to any more. I was looking forward to hearing the original version of 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' and was disappointed (check out St Etienne's cover- its great). His vocals hover somewhere between intruiging and god awful. When he was singing 'it's over' I wished it was. Then the only rock out number 'When You Dance..' happened. A reprieve! Especially as 'I Believe In You' was good too. Finishes with a load of country bollocks. It gets a solid mid 1.

A special thanks to this guy for pulling all his shit off Spotify. And that's the best I have to say about this guy and his music. Nothing of interest. Not a big fan of dudes who whine like a lil bitch either. Not sure who did it worse, Bob Marley or Neil Young. But I got Radiohead next who I assume will whine a lot like Young, so maybe I'll wait and have a 3 person, "who sucked more" contest. Right now Marley in the lead because his crap is still on Spotify. 1.5

The first sung note of any Neil Young album (of which there are apparently an infinite number) really kills my enthusiasm for the rest of the album.

Not really a fan. I can see the impact he's made on the genre though.

No disponible en Spotify

Cant listen to

I think I've finally made it through all of Neil Young's garbage. He's SO overrepresented on this list. If I never hear another frikkin' Neil Young song in my whole life, I'll be thrilled. He's an overhyped hack of a songwriter and a garbage musician. On this particular album, he's an even worse singer than usual. So glad to be done with his nonsense.

Don’t make me listen to Neil Young please

Seichter Folk Rock.

I really don't care for his voice. Actually I did not care for the album at all. 1/5

Love the tune, but cannot download the album on spotify

Only 1 song available on Spotify: only love can break your heart

*didn’t listen as nearly all his work isn’t on Spotify*

Album not very accessible.
