Really great!
Great funk-rock vibe. It's been awhile since I've listened to the whole album. I think Purple Rain is a better Price album but this one is more funk oriented so I guess I have room to give it a 5 star. I will forever want that 1/2 star feature on this site.
5.
It's all about the funk here. And the smut. We've all got a lion in our pocket, ready to ROAR, right? The cage is open, but the beast is asleep. Or something. 1999 defies the rule that all double albums would make for far better single albums. Blimey, this sounded astonishing after all these years. He was a one.
The lyrics at the end of "1999": "Mommy, why does everyone have a bomb?" OMG did Prince predict 9/11?!??1 Masterful album.
Favourite tracks: 1999; little red corvette; let's pretend we're married; dmsr; automatic; lady can driver
Classique
The Good: Prince!!! The Bad: double album… The Ugly: failure in predicting the future… If I am correct, there are 3 Prince albums on the 1001 list, and this is the first one I get to listen to. If I am also correct, the “professionals” who have created this 1001 list are a bunch of ignorant bastards, as there are, at minimum, 3 Prince albums which should have been included additionally (Dirty Mindy/Controversy as this is the OG Prince, Around the World In a Day as this heralded his release from the mayor labels, and Parade which is the soundtrack to his second movie “Under the Cherry Moon”, probably my favorite bad movie ever! But I digress, as we are not here to bitch about the list, but we are here to talk about this album…. I heard the song 1999 when it came out, but I did not buy the album till I became enthralled with Prince due to Purple Rain. Consider me a fanboy! The album which I purchased was the single vinyl version, which even had a press error as on side 2 the label had been double printed—and I speak in past-tense as, unfortunately for me, my entire record collection was sold by my mother at some point in the ‘90s as she needed to create space… but let’s not go there… 1999, Little Red Corvette, Delirious and Free, that was side 1… as close to perfection as one can get. Side 2, well, not bad, but it didn’t get the playtime as side 1 did. Originally I was going to give this album 4*, as this is one of my least favorite Prince albums from his pre NPG oeuvre, however, by the third listen, I was all smiles!!! 5*
Prince is a legend.
This became the blueprint of the sound of pop music in the 80s.
I love music that makes me move and if it’s got some funk, then even better. Clearly this is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
Great album. 5/5
Prince at the height of his powers. 10/5.
Who doesn't love Prince? The man was a genius. This album is wonderful. And although I don't like it as much as Purple Rain or Sign O' The Times, it's still a banger. Great grooves, nice funk, brilliant instrumentation and production, just enough weirdness to it. What's not to like? As with a lot of his records, I feel like this one is better as a whole album rather than pulling songs out individually. Sure, 1999 and Little Red Corvette are great on their own but the album as a whole is really fantastic. 5/5
I ended up enjoying every song on this album. I had no idea this was from the early 80s. I always thought it came out sometime near the year 2000, but never expected it to have been from 1982! It sounds like an album from the 90's emulating the sound of the 80's! Despite 1999 and Little Red Corvette, the rest of the album maintains the sex and romance and quirk. As I mentioned the sound feels like both a fresh take on the 80's sound while also transcending it despite it's creation before most of the 80's sound really took off. This album must have been a trendsetter for that sound and it is obvious.
5 forever.
Have listened to this album often, but not in a while. It's nice to have an excuse to listen to this album again. It's a classic that still sounds great. Great hits, great deep cuts. Interesting that it was released as a double album but has just over 70 minutes of music.
Good tunes and some good laughs along the way. I enjoyed this album immensely. I'm giving it five stars and adding it to my Tidal library.
💜💜💜💜💜
Pure pop perfection
This was the first Prince music I remember hearing. 1999 and Little Red Corvette were pretty inescapable that year. Prince was such a massive talent. I regret not seeing him live. Fantastic stuff.
I read a lot of reviews complaining that these songs last too long. I’m here to tell you every song could be another 5 minutes longer and I’d still love it. Killer album, raunchy as hell, don’t listen if you have kids around.
Pure musical genius.
Mein erstes komplettes Album von Prince. super starkes Album. Alles dabei, was mein Herz höher schlagen lässt: Funk, soul, tolle Gitarre, wunderbares Songwriting, nicht mein letztes Album von Prince
um dos melhores de todos os tempos
Iconic. Classic. These are the words we use to describe Prince's 1999 now. Back in 1982 we said something different. Wow! Mind blowing! Tight! Finely crafted. These were the 1982 phrases for what would become one of the best albums of all time. 1999 not only blew apart the pop charts then, not only did it dominate MTV, not only were these staples of any club experience no matter what the genre of the club, they introduced the larger audience to funk in a way that no one else had ever done. Prince was a genius and 1999 his masterpiece. That's obvious today, but it was equally obvious, even to this punk rocker, in 1982.
The perfect distillation of hedonistic fun, and a non-stop party that somehow doesn't let up even once for 70 whole minutes.
Fun.
2472 - Okay, this is his surpassing of Off The Wall, some of the best songs of the 80s on one album with his unique synthy style.
"I was dreaming when I wrote this" Just fucking brilliant. Prince is up there with Elvis, Lennon and McCartney etc as a true great. Deservedly in this list and quite possibly top 10. "All bangers, all the time" as Kendall says in Succession 5 because I cant give it more.
Lempparit: 1999, Little Red Corvette
Meisterwerk.
Heard this album a few times. Really good sound that inspired music from today
Fantastic; a classic
Best of the 80’s, funky and freaky The first definitive prince album
He created a whole new world with this album
Got to re-listen to this on an old vinyl courtesy of Tom. A great album.
5 stars
This is #day39 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... my wife made me laugh when she found out which album I needed to listen to today. She said she used to think Prince was Michael Jackson's son... Anyway, diving into 1999, it was interesting to learn about the Minneapolis sound. The rhythm section and those cosmic synths steal the spotlight, adding a distinct flavor... Eventually, when I realized there's an Edit feature on this site available, I came here to re-rate an album because revisiting it made me score a NM vinyl copy for peanuts, and it sounds absolutely phenomenal. Such a NYC vibe and sex all over. One of my favorites in the collection. I'm giving this a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #40.
This is often labelled as Prince’s first real breakthrough album and I would tend to agree. Not to say his previous efforts were bad at all, but they were certainly more hit and miss than anything. ‘1999’ marked a Prince that had a lot more conviction in his sound and production techniques. I also believe this is the first time ‘The Revolution’ were credited with him; and it became the start of his era of critical and commercial success. I’m going to make a pretty bold comparison here. Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ is often defined as his definitive work just as much as ‘Purple Rain’ seems to be viewed as Prince’s magnum opus. But like Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’ album, Prince’s ‘1999’ is pretty much the damn near perfect predecessor that enters an underrated territory because it immediately flies under the shadow of the follow up’s massive success. ‘1999’ has no bad tracks and is pretty much 11 songs that are absolute bangers. The self titled opener and ‘Little Red Corvette’ are legendary tracks. The former using a keyboard riff that sticks with you long after the song is over, and an infectious, infamous chorus to boost it up even more. The latter seems almost designed for radio and MTV, but doesn’t lose the depth of production Prince is famous for. The absolute bop that is ‘Let’s Pretend We’re Married’, the funk driven ‘D.M.S.R.’, the beautiful power ballad ‘Free’, the atmospheric, fast, and smokey ‘All The Critics Love U In New York’, and the phenomenal finisher ‘International Lover’ where Prince really lets his strong vocals shine. Nearly every track features infectious bass lines, impressively programmed drums, and some of the absolutely best funk driven guitar work you have ever heard. ‘1999’ is simply great from start to finish, and could make the case for Prince’s best work. It is self indulgent (it is Prince, after all). It is confident. And it is unapologetic. But it wouldn’t be the album it is without these qualities; and it is worth listening to for any fan of fantastic production and dance-y psychedelic funk. 5/5
Love me an extended album-cut funk jam! This one is just chock full of yummy goodness. Keep you moving all day! Many sounds and much excitement.
Classic album. Prince is always amazing.
It's undoubtedly a classic. Perhaps a smidge too long.
Some of Prince's best known bops are on 1999! Despite this being his fifth album, it is the album that truly put him on the map. He honed in on his unique sound, the Minneapolis sound, perfectly in 1999. The album opens with classic Prince songs, his fun dance bops. Then Prince delves into possibly what's best known for: his long and sexual jams. Holy shit, the order of "Let's Pretend We're Married"/"D.M.S.R."/"Automatic" is one of the best combinations in all of music. Regretfully, I am loath to admit that the double album that is 1999 goes for too long. Far be it from me to suggest Prince rein himself in, but I've always thought the second disc's second side could have been eliminated without suffering any integrity to the album. I proclaim my love for the song "International Lover" and its sensual lyrics (thank you for this gift, Prince), but the final 3 songs just go on for too long. If I were a stickler, I'd say this album is a 4.5, but I gotta go for a 5 for the genius that is Prince.
Now I can see why Prince was so popular. Compared to Singing O The Times, i enjoyed this album much, much more. The opening to this album is awesome, with 1999, Luttle Red Corvette, and my personal favorite, Delirious. This album is a sex-crazed synth party, and it's simple drum machines and repetative pop notes somehow works for me. It's very confident in its identity, so much so that the ending of Let's Pretend We're Married somehow feels earned and not cringe.
10/10
Holy greatness!! If it was the top 10 albums only, this one makes it.
Realy good album!
Sex and camp. My favorite combination.
An exhibition of pure creativity! So many great songs!
But when I woke up this mornin' Could've sworn it was judgment day The sky was all purple There were people runnin' everywhere Tryin' to run from the destruction You know I didn't even care
Fabulous! 5/5
This feels like it set up pop music for the 80s. The synthesizers, guitar and bass, and drums all sound so stereotypically 80s, but this was the most important first record to do that.
It's Prince.
Man I love Prince, such a talented musician. So many great songs on this album, a lot of funky and sexual jams. I love all of the synth sounds and especially that snare sound he uses on some songs (you know the one). Prince is super underrated as a guitarist, but Lady Cab Driver has a short, but kick-ass solo. 1999 is probably my goto party song. The word "automatic" has been ruined for me, I can't hear it anymore without thinking a-u-t-o-matic All the Critics Love U In New York is the only song I really don't care about on this album, beside that this album is perfect.
Starting off strong with the title track. And this album just keeps delivering right until the final track. Funky, soulful, melodic, fun, futuristic and sexy. Prince was in a league of his own.
An album full of funk epics. The long runtimes end up working in it's favour, since you just don't want the grooves to end. Prince gets a little too comfortable with the sex stuff on a couple of songs, but it's manageable. Those basslines are crazy, so much fun.
Classic and amazing
It was great.
1999-1982=17 interesting
Yes please.
Awesomely funky stuff from Prince. There are several long songs on here - 7+ minutes, but none of them feel long. Hard to pick highlights, but Something In The Water is great, as is Lady Cab Driver. Delirious is the only track that didn't really work for me.
That Prince guy sure knew how to make some funky jams
So good. Classic tracks. Starts bonkers strong but remainder is good but not as great. If you’re a person who enjoys museums, and you’re a fan of Prince, then I recommend you visit Paisley Park up in Minnesota. I went a few years ago and I loved it.
I’ve loved all of this, and I’ve loved some of this and found the rest bizarre and indulgent. This listen I loved it all. Much like Stevie Wonder, Prince can let a song coast on a groove for a while and sometimes I’ll be impatient for it to end, and other times I’ll lock in and enjoy the ride. Well over half of this album is unimpeachable classics and the rest are fascinating if not perfect.
It’s 1999. By Prince.
May 30, 2024 HL: title track, "Little Red Corvette", "Delirious", "Automatic", "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)", "All The Critics Love U In New York" A small step down from Purple Rain, but comparing any Prince album to Purple Rain is unfair. Comparing any *album* to Purple Rain is unfair. Though some songs move outside the formula, this is a high NRG collection of songs for dancing, and songs for... 👀 👀 👀 fucking. And who wrote those kinds of songs better in the 80's than Prince? 1999 sounds a bit more claustrophobic than his other two albums on this list, due to him recording pretty much every instrument himself. But the illusion of a full soundstage is helped along by the production (He did that too? makes sense). "Little Red Corvette" sounds like it was born in a stadium.
I received the Purple Rain cassette for Christmas, 1984. In hindsight it was probably a little brave of my parents to get that for me as a 10 year-old, considering some of the lyrics travel into risqué territory (Darling Nikki), but they surely didn’t know that when they bought it. Purple Rain is a universally regarded brilliant and perfect album, so digging further into Prince is weird because it reveals that there are exactly zero of his other albums that sound anything like it. The closest you’re going to come would be 1999, created the year before in 1983. It has the big pop radio hits but instead of the classic rock all-time great album vibe of Purple Rain, it presents an early 80s dance/club aesthetic that truly rocks a persons world once they get into it. Many of these songs stretch past 6 or 7 minutes and dig their 5” purple velvet heels deeply into the groove. This album is just as important as Purple Rain, and once you get into this as well, you’ll discover that Prince’s catalog is full of mind blowing albums that never repeat themselves, that don’t always take themselves seriously, will get a little (or a lot) nasty, and will reward repeated listens ten-fold.
Bought it 40 years ago
Easy 5.
Some tracks a bit too long but great overall. Gonna party like it is 1999.
Prince is like no other figure in modern music - a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist that produced critically and commercially successful work over decades, and who may be one of the coolest people to ever live. 1999 was Prince's fifth studio album, and this was the release that made him in to a star. His pop-infused version of R&B and funk was well polished by this album, and some of his big, early hits were the result: "Little Red Corvette," "Delirious," and "1999." This was Prince's first album recorded with the Revolution, the band that he worked with for most of the 80's. This is an incredible collection of songs, and one of the masterpieces in Prince's catalog.
Spectacular. Some albums get better with time and this is one of them.
What more needs to be said!? Not my favourite prince album and it’s not as good as Purple Rain, Controversy or Sign o the Times in my opinion but it does have maybe his greatest song - little red corvette. The whole album is a delight and the only song i wasn’t particularly keen on was delirious. Shout out to DMSR, automatic and all the critics love you in New York for being great underrated cuts. Anyone else find it unusual that I’ve got two prince albums so far though out of the 1001 I’ve only listened to 10 and 2 have been prince
Is there a better song than Little Red Corvette?
ONCE AGAIN ITS TOO GOOD TO CRITIQUE Anyway Prince. Fun fact: my ex husband bought the last ticket to the last show he ever played in Atlanta. The hits are thee fuckin HITS here. You immediately get punched in the face with 1999. Then it’s Little Red Corvette. Then Delirious?? Look it’s Prince here so you know you’re gonna fuckin party regardless of if you want to or not. Even the lesser known songs are jamz. You literally can’t fuck with this album. Did you also know that if someone doesn’t like Prince you can legally beat them up with a roll of nickels in a sock? I’m not a lawyer tho so use discretion there. If you really listen you can hear how masterful of a composer the guy is. There’s layers in there that you can really tell have an effect on the overall sound of the tune. Even the album cover has lots of cool details and shit. Purple Rain aside, this is Prince and the Revolution at their finest. Just a solid record start to finish and hot as heck. If you don’t like Prince after hearing this then you should jump in the nearest ocean immediately.
I need a 6 Star option for this. Non-stop party. I don't care that I'm partying like 35 years ago, I don't party but this is the one exception.
Just seeing the album pop up in my feed put a smile on my face. This one is a six.
Never listened to it but Prince outlived Mike Jack
Prince’s 1999 might be one of the smoothest, funkiest, and grooviest albums I’ve ever heard. To be frank, I had no clue what this album is, so I had no preexisting knowledge of the genre or direction Prince was taking. It was a pleasant surprise. Starting with 1999, the celebratory feeling really got me hyped, and then with Little Red Corvette, the flow was too good, and Prince sounded amazing. This continued for the entire album, with every song sounding unique, but equally hella funky. My favorites are Little Red Corvette, Something In The Water (Does Not Compute), and Lady Cab Driver. This, in my opinion, rivals Purple Rain, if not being better. All in all, 1999 is a perfect album. Best Song: Lady Cab Driver Worst Song: All The Critics Love U In New York
thank goodness the world never ended in '99. this is a very funky early synth pop album, absolutely fabulous vocals, an almost poetic and SEXY atmosphere and one-of-a-kind drum machine experiments make prince's songs really stand out among the rest. so good.
💜💜💜💜💜
Prince arrived to the mainstream with this album. A beast of an album.
One of my favorite albums now
Enjoyed this a lot, : )
I wanted to seriously listen to this before rating it. So silly. I know this album throughly. I'd never give it anything less than a 5
Not many artists can release not one but 2 essential double albums with all killer, no filler, but we're talking Prince here. If you dont understand how amazing this is life is wasted on you
I’m a Prince guy. Love his sound and his eccentricities. This is great beginning to end. Good grooves and catchy hooks. Will be listening forever. 5/5
A master musician and excellent artist. One of the best of its' era.
Classic from a master
This album is even greater than I remember it. I have listened to a lot of Prince, including this album and Purple Rain, but I mostly go back to Hits I & II if I'm going to just get a little hit of Prince. However, it must have been longer than I thought it had been since I listened to "1999" all the way through, because I was very impressed by all the quirks and the flow of the songs and the length of many of them that went far beyond just his normal pop hooks. I definitely am going to be listening to this one again soon.
An album that I've listened to more than 1,999 times! I paid closer attention to the lesser played tracks this time. Does anyone else hear \"Neutron Dance\" elements in \"Let's Pretend We're Married?\" The former came out 2 years after this album, so probably was an influence. This album is truly seminal. Pun intended.
1999 Cool synths and drum machines throughout. One of the more electronic and dancey Prince albums. Things are kind of stretched out and there’s some cool space. I like to stay on a groove for a while. Favorites: DMSR, 1999 Free was a welcome change of pace Love the “ this is your pilot, prince” bit in international lover.
Not my fav prince album but totally iconic and pretty groundbreaking when it came out I think. Little red corvette slaps
own
Fabulous!
I’m going to sound like a broken record here as it was only recently that I reviewed a different one of Prince’s albums. I’m very happy to be reviewing another today, as I’ve yet to find any music that he created that wasn’t great. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: 1999, Little Red Corvette Favourites: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Lady Cab Driver I’m not sure what more there is to say that I haven’t already said elsewhere on Prince’s albums. This is an excellent mix of rock, pop and funk presented in a way that only Prince could. Everything here is a delight to listen to. There’s maybe not quite as many ear worms as on Purpose Rain, but then again that’s simply comparing to a masterpiece.
Prince is a genius. This entire album is just pure gold, and so influential. Before I converted to Prince I still found this album to have great songs if a bit too bloated. But now I fully love every second, and wish it never ended. The songs are given so much time to breathe and absorb, get lost in, etc. This isn't even my favorite Prince album on this list
I didn’t feel Delirious at all after I listened to this album. In fact I felt Free. Like a Little Red Corvette on the autobahn.
Funky ça! EDIT DU FUTUR: TRÈS FUNKY ÇA
Perfect
Hype
All killer. Love this album.
First time listening to a full Prince album. Very enjoyable. International lover and little red corvette stood out to me.
Forgot quite how many extended funk jams there are on this.
Only Prince could make the coming apocalypse a dance party. Only Prince could make Cold War anxiety so funky. Only Prince could invest yet another car-based love/heartbreak song with new life. Only Prince could, and boy did he ever. The title track makes us look forward to immanent doom and after about 55 seconds it’s pretty clear that “Little Red Corvette” is an ageless smash across multiple genres. And that’s the magic trick of this whole record: everything we adore about Prince is on display here. That LinnDrum isn’t a tool, it’s a Time Machine that Prince uses to guide us into the musical future he knows we need to hear. His god-tier creative potential is realized on “1999,” and even though we saw Prince in real time as the hit maker he was destined to be, it’s still taken decades for Pop music to pick up what he was laying down. Every night we put this record on is the night we’re gonna party like it’s 1982, 1999, 2024, and 2099. “Purple Rain” may have lifted Prince into the stratosphere, but there’s no question that “1999” fueled the engines that rocketed him up there.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!
So good
Brings back great college memories
Revolutionary visions to blend pop, funk and Prince's signature guitar.
A masterpiece amongst many
Yep. Is there a rating higher than five stars?
I'm so passively familiar with these songs that I was so excited when the album turned out to be about an apocalyptic orgy. Simply an incredible concept. It makes total sense that Jack Nicholson's Joker would blast Prince while killing people with poisonous gas. This shit is dark!
A masterpiece by the master.
Prince is incredibly horny on this double LP, dripping with Oberheim synth and Linn drums, as well as Prince's signature funk guitar. It might be dismissed as merely "an album to fuck to," but that would be doing the tone a disservice; the breadth of sound the man arranged himself dances on the ears, to the point where you can feel the plucking of chords. Infinitely danceable, the project begins strong and ends strong, with maybe the only weak link being "All the Critics Love U in New York". Overall a fantastic showing by the Minneapolis Madman, may he rest in peace.
1999 is the fifth studio album by American recording artist Prince, released on October 27, 1982, by Warner Bros. Records. It became his first album to be recorded with his band the Revolution. 1999's critical and commercial success propelled Prince to a place in the public psyche and marked the beginning of two years of heightened fame via his following releases.1999 was Prince's first top 10 album on the Billboard 200, peaking at number nine, and was fifth in the Billboard Year-End Albums of 1983. "1999", a protest against nuclear proliferation, was a Billboard Hot 100 top 20 hit, peaking at number 12. It has since become one of Prince's most recognizable compositions. "Delirious" reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, while "Little Red Corvette" peaked at number six, becoming Prince's highest charting US single at the time. "International Lover" was also nominated for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 26th Grammy Awards, which was Prince's first Grammy Award nomination. 1999 received widespread acclaim from critics, and was seen as Prince's breakthrough album. On March 24, 1999, 1999 was certified quadruple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Following Prince's death in 2016, the album re-entered the Billboard 200 and peaked at number seven, besting its original performance on the chart thirty-three years earlier. A re-release and remaster of the album, including 35 previously unreleased recordings, was released in November 2019.1999 has been ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time by several publications and organizations. The music videos for both "1999" and "Little Red Corvette" received heavy rotation on MTV, making Prince one of the first black artists to be in heavy rotation on the television channel. According to the Rolling Stone Album Guide (2004), "1999 may be Prince's most influential album: Its synth-and-drum machine-heavy arrangements codified the Minneapolis sound that loomed over mid-'80s R&B and pop, not to mention the next two decades' worth of electro, house, and techno." It is also included on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 2008, the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame
Have not ever been a big fan of prince’s music. Until now! Every song is an ear worm with a timeless groove to back it up. This guy pulled no punches! Favorite songs Little Red Corvette, Free, and Delerious
"1999" by Prince, released in 1982, is a landmark album that solidified Prince's status as a musical genius and cultural icon. The album is a tour de force of musical innovation, blending elements of funk, rock, pop, and R&B into a cohesive and groundbreaking sound. Tracks like the title track "1999," "Little Red Corvette," and "Delirious" are timeless classics that showcase Prince's exceptional songwriting, musicianship, and production skills. Beyond its musical brilliance, "1999" also reflects the social and political climate of its time, with themes of partying, love, and the impending turn of the millennium. Overall, "1999" is a masterpiece that transcends genre and time, earning it a perfect 5/5 rating. It remains a testament to Prince's unparalleled talent and creativity, and its impact on music is still felt today.
Always a 5
It’s Prince! Dance, music, sex, romance. Great music!
Love Prince
Amazing, classic...the best of Price
Plus 5 more Stars!
It's Prince. No discussion needed
Classic Prince. Sexy. Groovy vibe
Legend
A great record to dance to. Prince is a magician when it comes to electronic funk
Great album. That's it. That is the whole review.
Really good. I forgot how long some of these songs are. Whole album is like one long party. I like Prince a lot so was happy to see this pop uup. Little Red Corvette was current when I first really became aware of pop music being popular - like where things stood on nightly countdowns on the radio vs just what I was aware of and listening to and watching on MTV.
This album is absolutely great, and perfectly captures Prince's talent. It doesn't end as well as it starts, but it still ends better than 95% of albums out there.
🕺🏻🪩💃🏻 — can't wait to be on the dancefloor, 4.5/5
Prince is a real sexual freak, has anyone else noticed that??? Thoroughly enjoyed this album. So 80s in the best way. And his voice! Incredible. I would throw this on if I had some conservative Christians in my house that I wanted to leave.
No soy especialmente fan de Prince, pero he de reconocer, con el paso del tiempo, que este tío sabía hacer música de verdad 10/10
This is a classic album. I can listen to it over and over again.
Absolute classic. No notes.
As a Minnesotan, I am obligated to love this album. Which conveniently I do. The man is a god damn vibes machine. Loved it.
Me recuerda a la pelicula de Batman con Jack Nicholson comp el Joker, maravilloso
Prince is a big blind spot in my musical odyssey so I'm happy to have been able to give this whole record a spin. First two tracks are of course familiar thanks to their status in music culture but the rest of the album was new. Though it runs for a hefty 70 minutes it went by incredibly quickly. Even 7-9 minute tracks would fly by. Definitely revisiting this later
Was surprised by the songs I hadn’t listened to on this album.
As if this album needs a review
I was a Prince fan even before this album, but it is a true classic.
Peak Prince? Possibly. The title track is possibly the greatest dance track of all time. Little red corvette is just .. oh! And the rest of the album. Let’s pretend we’re married (and presumably not talk for months). DMSR. Delirious. All of them. Wow! What he’s a little underrated in is long grooves. When the revolution settle in it’s just magic. No wonder the live reputation is immense. 19 stars.
What can I say besides “ughh”! Prince is a little freak and it’s awesome. RIP to the only nympho to ever come out of Minnesota 💜
Party likes it’s 1999! Can’t listen without moving my body all around , I can feel some of that George Clinton funk in this track, kind of haunting and nihilistic too… hedonistic ?? Idk 🤷🏻♂️, great track, but there’s definitely some Zen To extract from this gem 💎 “Delirious” … is this what “Bebop” is??? ¡¡¡Ok ok, did anyone else catch that sample??? You know the one that’s used by timbaland in that Aliyah song with the little baby giggling in the background !!! (PS it’s at the end of the song) “DMSR” intro reminds me of the level on teenage mutant mini turtles when you’re about to fight a big boss 🤷🏻♂️ Ok; so Andre 3000 and the “Love below album” , ummm didn’t fall too far from this one ☝🏼 RIP Prince, you nasty for that one! ☝🏼
The opening let's me know this is gonna be a WILD FLARPING RIDE... *organs intensify* big themes ~~p4RRtiee t!m3~~ purple but also red horses? okay saturdays fast cars sweatin' it to the oldies syncopated clapping
A groundbreaking classic.
Lüpfig
I was dreamin' when I wrote this so forgive me if it goes astray... An absolute party of an album, a party where Prince fucks you with the funk, and then makes you pancakes for breakfast the next morning. His purple badness is here giving you the full business.
Sounds incredibly 80s and incredibly timeless at the same time. Never listened to it in its entirety before. A classic for a reason.
So, I'm biased. I'm from Minneapolis. Paisley Park was blocks from where my dad worked, and I saw it often. I was dancing at First Avenue to "1999" on New Year's Eve when the clock struck midnight and it became 2020. "When I woke up this morning/Could've sworn it was judgement day." "We're running out of time." "We could all die any day." Tell me about it. The songs are long, sure. The Minneapolis Sound might not be for everybody. He says some freaky shit on this thing. But god damn, when Prince sings "I'm gonna have fun every motherfuckin' night", I believe him. Highlights: 1999, Little Red Corvette, Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R., Free, Lady Cab Driver, International Lover
Klinkt echt heerlijk. Favos dmsr en lady cab
A sincerely incredible album that touches almost every musical genre you can imagine. What an artist. Favorite track: Let's Pretend We're Married
An excellent album through and through.
Great variety, not a stale song on the album.
Tempted to give this one 4⭐️ because it gets a little monotonous in the middle. But… it’s Prince’s 1999. How can I NOT give it 5? Classic.
The music is genius! The lyrics are a little bit too sexual for my tastes though.
Might be the most danceable album ever made.
5/5
One of my all time favourites. I think bought three cassettes because i wore them out. From beginning to end... just stellar work
dont think i've actually listened to this album in 'one shot' before. pretty great listening to songs i know so well in context, it sounds so far ahead of its time, and i am increasingly convinced he was an alien.
Absolutely fantastic. A classic. An LP full of longer tracks which was rare for a pop LP of its time.
Totally love this, a perfect record! Prince’s 1980’s dance/pop-rock masterpiece is perhaps the commercial zenith of an amazing career. Funky groove with all of the slickness the decade had to offer. Try not to dance, I dare ya!
Sex funk done right
Prince might be the most horny musical genius there ever was. I was in a massive traffic jam while listening and it made it slightly better.
Picture it: it’s 1983 and you have the sweetest, wettest Jheri-Curl imaginable. You just recorded your SECOND masterpiece. Your girlfriend (Vanity 6) will release an album clad in lingerie. Your best friend and his band (The Time) are COOL. You’re about to change the world. There’s no turning back.
Prince is such a weirdo and I love him so much. Was he really worried about having enough class for a gal who carries around used Trojans in her pocket? Anyway, this is a banger that I initially wrote off but listening to the whole thing has made me realise just how good it is. I think All The Critics Love U In New York is deeply underappreciated!
Loved it
Shame on me for not knowing much of any of Prince discography.. but I am very aware of the proliferation of music that has come out of Minneapolis since his peak in popularity.. I don't think I would have liked this if if I had heard it in my 20s... but this shit is surprisingly funky as fuck! Damn I'm definitely listening to this again. I think I'm just in a rhythm centric funk-era of my life. so.. who knew.. Prince this works for me.. Talkin' about bein' sexy, dancing and fucking. Cool. "All white people clap your hands on the four now" lmao! Review of Reviews: The people.. they love it or hate it.. definitely not for everyone. I can see metal heads saying it's derivative. Best Track: Dance Music Sex Romance.
Prince, just Prince. Fantastic.
so good

YESSSS
Brilliant
Maybe they listened and actually put a good album on
Classic Prince, amazing, musical and sexy.
love this album, heard it so many times before, perfect
This entire album is fire. Lots of jamming at the end of the songs too
Prince is just good vibes and jamz
This album feels staggeringly ahead of its time. I genuinely cannot believe that it came out in 1982 based on the production and arrangements. Prince's extreme talent shines through here once again. The sheer number of genres and influences exhibited here is literally too big to count. And yet, it is an entirely cohesive project that is pretty remarkable to listen to. Favorite track: Let's Pretend We're Married
I almost rated this four stars because there are three or four better Prince albums. But it’s still better than more than at least 81% of everything else, so 5 stars it is.
Brilliant
First song immediately had me feeling good. Wide variety of instruments and voices makes for a fun and dancy album
.
Took me over a month to listen to and not the most accessible Prince album. 5 Stars for Little Red Corvette alone. It's also crazy how ahead of its time All the Critics Love U In New York sounds. BT - 1999 - Little Red Corvette - Automatic - Something in the Water - Free - Lady Cab Driver - All the Critics Love U in New York
I have mentioned my problems with Prince’s production problems before, so here’s a lost of the most egregious ones on 1999: -The Kid talking about bombs at the end of 1999 -That fucking baby at the end of Delirious -The very dated keyboard sound doing tbe fills in Let’s Pretend We’re Married -The other very dated keyboard sound in D.M.S.R. -‘Somebody call the Police Help me, somebody please help me, somebody help me’ ???
As near to perfect as you can musically get while maintaining a sense of humour. When we talk about an imperial phase this is what we mean.
It’s Prince. It’s awesome.
absolute vlassic :moistbanger: love it
Banger after banger
If Prince only sang on this album it would be a 5-star effort. In his spare time he wrote everything, played every instrument, and produced it. As a 23-year-old.
Dynamite. A classic
Prince
This album is just incredible from start to finish. When it comes to party songs, even ones that maybe got a little played out, you can’t do any better than the title track or Let’s Pretend We’re Married, but the down tempo numbers, especially International Lover, also hit.
SEX! YIPPEE!!!
One of the best!
Sometimes I feel like I don’t get prince and then sometimes I listen to 70 minutes of ball-tingling bangers
Sexy, pulsating, and at times terrifying.
Fantastic. One of the things that Prince does best is making music really sharp and well produced without losing any of the soul and energy of a demo. Little red corvette is amazing.
absolutely perfect. maybe a hot take but this is my favorite prince album — it just goes so hard
My favorite Prince album - this is the one that made him famous and he was a pure breath of talent and freshness back in 1982 when this was released.
Excellent
Visionary, perfectionist, numerous 1980's "digital sounds"
Brimming with sexuality and prowess, a love explosion that sent Prince, the Revolution and Minneapolis sound straight to the top.
Of the times. Would say that Cold War paranoia and Prince undergoing a sexual transformation (apparently; could be interpreting this wrong) are huge influences to this album. Seems like a really experimental album for the times and possibly a huge influence for pop music for the years to come. That and Thriller, of course. 1982 was a big year for Pop.
Banger album, Prince has such powerful charisma that oozes through his music. One of the most electric live performers and the studio recordings don’t let up either. Obviously iconic tracks like 1999 and Little Red Corvette get most of the attention, but the whole album is great, my secondary favorites after those two are probably Automatic and Lady Cab Driver.
Thought the album started very strong but tapered off as it progressed. The only thing I'll take away from it is that the songs can be too long. Otherwise there are a bunch great songs, most notably "1999" and "Little Red Corvette". 8/10
Buenísimo, no había escuchado mucho a Prince y para empezar fue un discazo
My first ever Prince album listened in full and it was a treat. It so 80s yet it sounds like no other 80s album. I know the classics are east to talk about but what an intro this album has. Loved it and saved
sex
No question about the greatness of this one. It's not my personal favourite of his albums, but I'd venture so far as to say it's the greatest of his albums. And Prince has no shortage of great albums to choose from.
The night before this popped up, a friend asked what song would I listen to if the world was ending. I said if I had enough time for two songs, my first would be One Hundred Years by The Cure because it's pure gloom & doom followed by the song 1999. The lyrics to that song a wholly apocalyptic, but you can also dance your ass off & feel good about the world ending. Prince had a knack for introspective song writing paired with catchy funky dance beats. This is album is excellent across the board & Prince will always be one of my favorite all-time artists.
Early Prince is definitely a favourite of mine. There are so many great jams on here.
One of my all time favorites 😍
Sexy, funky, groovy, perfect. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hard to get better than this!
the best
This album is a ton of fun. Prime 80s rock through and through. As a metalhead, I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Little Red Corvette is stuck in my head, and all of the singles are very good. The "filler" songs keep up the feel-good vibes. 1999 is the album that supposedly catapulted Prince to stardom, and it's not hard to see why.
An unabashed Prince fanatic, this has never been my favorite album in his catalog, and I went in thinking this would be a 4-star rating. But upon listening to this album with the intention of rating it, I developed a new appreciation for just how remarkable this collection of songs is. The opening salvo of "1999" to "Little Red Corvette" to "Delirious" is like a best-of album right out of the gate, and while the PMRC freaked out about "Darling Nikki," this album is so chock-full of sexually explicit and implicit material, it's way more sexually inflammatory than anything on "Purple Rain." Whether "Little Red Corvette" is specifically a reference to his one-night-stand's pussy or just a metaphor about how "fast" she is, it's a huge pop hit about casual sex. And "Let's Pretend We're Married" features one of the nastiest lines in pop music with "I sincerely want to fuck the taste out of your mouth." The fact that he follows that up, seconds later in the same song, with what sounds like a prayer stating "I'm in love with God and that's the only way, 'cause you and I know we gotta die someday" is profoundly confusing in so many ways. But, his true genius (and yes, Prince deserves that title) is not that he revels in salacious material — many terrible artists have relied on that to get attention and it can easily descend into smut — it's that it's just one part of an incredibly vital matrix of ideas and music and attitude and musical/lyrical freedom. Up until the end, Prince was taking chances and pushing boundaries. And musically, as an instrumentalist and vocalist, he's in a class of his own. Now that he's taken his songwriting to a whole new place on this record, it's exciting as hell. I do think the album drags, it's a little too techno for my taste in places, but I appreciate the clinical robotic-ness of this with his wild vocal acrobatics tugging at one another. So it's not a perfect album, but only because this was an artist creatively on fire and willing to indulge his creative fancy. That was something of a detraction later in his career — not all his misses were nearly as interesting — but here, even the relative low points are stellar.
Perfection
Funky, catchy, great bass across the whole album
Love me some prince. Every track is a banger.
Awesome
Perfection
A classic
Georgious
Prince is almost my next door neighbor. It's my wife's favorite artist of all time. So yeah, this album rules.
I have loved this album my whole life
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...... I know I'm suppose to rate THIS album, but once I saw Prince, I felt like I needed to address the impact this man and his music has had on my life from the the very first time I heard him sing. Prince Rogers Nelson. June 7th, 1958. Gemini. The greatest musical talent. Period. Growing up in the middle of Indiana, I had never heard of Prince until a friend's brother was listening to Controversy. It may have been Private Joy. It may have been Let's Work. Whatever I was hearing, I loved it and I had to find out, who was this Prince guy? It didn't take me long to find out and immediately changed the way I listen music, even the way I lived my life. Somehow, listening to Prince, I went from a shy Indiana boy to a confident Michigan teenager, mainly plagiarizing Prince's lyrics. The girls never stood a chance. This is the person responsible for igniting my passion for music, all music and that passion still burns as bright, if not brighter to this day. Music is my religion. I have songs that remind me of the good times, I have songs that remind me of some bad times. Music will make me laugh. Music will make me cry. Prince is the man responsible for making me dig in deep and letting music reach you in way no words can describe. He is simply the best! On to the album. First, you're a little late to the Prince world, if this is your first album. To prep for this album, I went back and binged on his first 4 albums. If you thought 1999 was a sexualized album and you enjoyed it, then Dirty Mind is an album I highly recommend. First 3 songs, 1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious, all very good tunes. But all 3 are your get on the radio kind of songs. If you knew Prince's music before this, you started to think maybe he went a little commercial, a little soft. Again, not because they are bad songs, but wasn't the Prince I was introduced to..... Then we get to Let's pretend we're married. "Marsha, I'm not saying this just to be nasty, but I sincerely want to phuck the taste out of your mouth." Profound, beautiful and yet heartfelt at the same time. Who can get away with this line? Prince and maybe Sienko, but that's it! DMSR - When this album came out, how many of you ended up in your underwear after hearing this song? BTW, the album was released 10/27/82, 2 days after my wife turned 16! So, yeah, we were rocking this album in High School, 40 years ago! And yep, that is he we ann arbor folks rolled back in the day. Some great words of wisdom in this song too. "Girl it aint no use, may as well get loose and work your body like a whore. However, in another part of the song, he states Policeman got no gun, you don't have to run. This has not aged well and you may want to run. One of my favorites off this album. My favorite on the album is Automatic. Ironic in the sense, not one of his well known songs. Like Weezer's Automatic. One of my favorites by Weezer too! So many great lyrics in this song. "Is it strange I feel more comfortable around you naked?" Around the 4 minute mark, he goes off on a little solo rant of statements and questions. After more music, a few minutes later, the girl responds to his statements/questions. Pure genius. Phugging awesome and my favorite part of the song. Love where he states I'm addicted to your pleasure, I'm addicted to your pain. But my favorite line - "they say nothing is perfect, but they don't know you." Good gawd, I think of Mindy!! Something in the water - May be my 2nd favorite off this album. One of those songs I can't explain, but just does something for me. Makes me think of Why you wanna treat me so bad. Free is just a beautiful song that really shows his voice range. I mean to hit those high notes only to dig deep and hit the baritone stuff is incredible. Lady Cab Driver - so many great lines in this song. I still will shout out "This is for Yosemite Sam all the tourist at Disneyland" whenever the moment seems right. Also loved, "This is for the women, so beautifully complex." Amen, brother. Back in the day, it was suppose to sound like he's getting some chick off, 40 years later, somewhat cringeworthy. Doesn't sound like she was having fun and he sounded a bit angry. Great tune still. All The Critics Love you. You thought it sounded silly at first. Then you found yourself grooving right along. He states, "On the 4th day of November, we need a purple high." I propose we all get a purple high on 4/21 each year to celebrate his passing, by celebrating our love of his music. Hell, I'm going to start this year and make a new tradition for the Sienko garage. International Lover. Still use this line on my wife, place my lips over your mouth and kissa, kissa...... Pretty sure I can still sing this song word for word and hit all the notes. Serious. In conclusion, This IS Prince. This album is great. This brought me back to the teenager growing up in Arbor Arbor. This is Sienko. My life is better for knowing Prince. I love this guy. Always will......... 5
Really loved this. Super funky and just sliiiick. Saved tracks: 1999, Let's Pretend We're Married, D.M.S.R., Automatic, Free
One generation had Bob Dylan, this generation had Prince Rogers Nelson. 5 stars ALL DAY LONG.
Perfect mix of pop, funk, and rock of the era. I’ve only listened to Prince’s hits and Purple Rain in full. This made me realize I need much more Prince in my life! 5/5
Classic obvs
Classics are sometimes just really obvious. It doesn’t need explanation.
Came to Prince very late in my musical discovery. Really think if I had discovered him as a teenager he would have opened my eyes so wider. This album is sensuous, is over 40 years old and feels modern and very very funky.
I mean come on, it’s Prince. How much better can it get?!
Prince at his funkiest
Classic r&b
Very good
Love prince
I have this on cassette.
Such a great album!
The first three songs on the album are classics and amazing! It was fun to listen more closely to what the rest of the album offers
Early introduction to this: my sister had it on double vinyl in the mid-80s, with its inner sleeve images, one in full Band Picture Day regalia with the Revolution, the other a boudoir photo featuring The Artist in bed with watercolors, his cute butt (mostly) concealed by tastefully arranged satin sheets. Which is neither here nor there, other than that format suits this sprawling masterpiece, less focused and more self-indulgent (but in that fantastic Prince way he totally got away with) than the imminent pop missile of Purple Rain, not a song under four minutes, four songs over seven minutes, full power Prince on display: the unearthly range, wild shifts in voice and vibe, able to hold the cutting edge of new wave synthesizer pop then just jam in however much deeply authentic funk soul. Dirty as hell and funny to boot.
Exhilarating thrill ride from Prince, who fully embraces synths and drum machine creating a futuristic dance soundscape. Kinky as f, Prince goes places no other singer would dare.
A great big synthesized sexscape. 'International Lover' is hilarious and haunting—I think that's an impressive combination.
Finally some good fucking food
Love this!!
Excellent
I thought it was starting to drag then I hit the funktastic All The Critics. Only the purple one can get away with that stripped down repetitive groove. If you can get an over 60 white man dancing you must have something. But I think International Lover is my new favourite song. I smiled, then giggled, then bellowed with laughter. He is that naughty little boy who keeps getting away with it. So much fun. I decided to re-listen because I needed to decide if this was worth four or five stars. That bass on Lady Cab Driver, perfect mix of '70s and '80s funk. Then it gets into that rocky little jam that becomes a full on shred. Oh yeah!
All time great album
Easily the album I’ve enjoyed the most in this project. It was nearly all killer and even the bits I thought were filler on the 1st listen might grow on me on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th listen. Having never listened to Prince before, consider me a fan.
Awesome! Electric
Prince is amazing isn’t he
This has great performances and composition. The branching into a variety of styles and the way Prince makes each song fun and unique give this album a claim to greatness. I wonder about the lengths of some of the songs which can go into the 8 to 10 minute range. At times that seems really cool because of the explorations and funky grooves. But at others you sort of wonder if it was necessary. All in all a one-of-a-kind effort from one of the all time great recording artists.
This is a pretty epic album and it's clear how it broke Prince out into stardom. It was probably a bit much for me at the time, as a young teen, but I definitely appreciate and admire it more now.
I do love to party like it is 1999!!!
Whoa! Don't know that I've ever listened to this whole album. I couldn't really connect to Prince when this was new. But grown up me thinks this holds up very well indeed. Superb!
PRINCE! As I listened, I wasn't entirely sure I've heard this entire album before... I was definitely familiar with the first half of the album. The second half less so... Great album... what's not to love about the first half? As for the second half, I'll probably need a few more listens to fully connect but no matter, that first half makes this album a solid 5!
Beautiful, godlike genius
No words
Iconic, required listening
On se kova. Varmaan Princen paras levy.
fucking awesome album from what I’ve been hearing from his earlier and later discography, I feel like this album is Prince’s peak whether it’s his best or not, this is still definitely a 10/10 for me
Great line that, "Tonight I'm gonna party like it's 1999". I danced my way through this album whilst cooking dinner. Love it.
As you know, I'm a big Prince fan, and I like his albums previous to this, but "1999" is his first 5 star masterpiece in my opinion. It's where The Revolution really gelled and he perfected his signature Kinn Drum sound that I love so much. It's a double album so a bit self indulgent in places, but that's part of Prince's appeal in a way. He needed to have this manic, no holds barred brainstorm session so he could really explore and push boundaries to get to the point where he could refine that energy on his piece de resistance: Purple Rain.
A classic. The gems are further into the record
awooooooga, the sexiest male pop artist of all time even if you've never seen him. what a ride, from experimental to masterful, this album hits it all Idk if there was an itch not scratched but I gotta let it sit with me before saying it's perfect definitely a revisiter. 9.9/10
great album, very sexy, love the cover art and really want to get more into Prince if you know what i mean.
It’s Prince. Being iconic af. A GREAT album full of excellent songs. This is just a great album…PERIOD.
This album is a lot of fun. The super hits are all at the beginning of the album; however that is does not mean that the other songs are pushovers. It is a great album. This is the third Prince album on the list. I would say that it is behind Purple Rain and Sign O the Times. I will listen to the album again.
Never was a Prince fan. My loss. At its worst this is a fun creative mess. At its best it’s magical. Strange, unique and mostly mesmerizing.
Fuck yeah, finally! Finally I’m graced with an album from The Purple One, Prince! I mean, c'mon people, this album opens with 3 of Prince's best, most danceable and memorable songs. One minute it's defiant "we're here for a good time" philosophizing, the next its manic desperate horniness boiling over. This album was a seismic shift in the rules of male pop superstardom and a glorious precursor of what was still yet to come from this formidably talented man. Prince has a rapidly sliding scale of moods and energies that take the listener on one hell of a ride. From tenderly suggestive to outright sexual vulgarity, Prince does whatever the fuck he wants, says whatever the fuck he wants, and fucks however the fuck he wants. And the music is always superbly fitting his attitude du jour. Nobody flies their freak flag higher than Prince and it is a spectacle to behold. Utterly unforgettable.
sweet prince x
Amazing album!
This horned out mf really made some masterful music.
Holy ahh
Good sound
That was an experience. All over the place lyrically and musically. Feels experimental in some spots and highly polished in others. I'd never been exposed to anything beyond his radio stuff, so this was extremely cool.
Brilliant
Great from start to finish. Funky and fun. Love Little Red Corvette and Lady Cab Driver especially. No notes here. Would give a 4.5 if possible.
Some absolutely stonking tracks on here!
SUPER GOOD
Classic
Other than the first song, I was not blown away.
Classic album in every aspect with singles and non-singles that are equally strong - I would say: Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain and Sign o'the Times are the best four Prince albums.
WOW---was expecting this to be a 2 based on the radio hits I remember from middle school. Prince always made me feel weird and icky back then but I think that was the damn evangelical hometown distain of Prince. Favorite track: Lady Cab Driver.
Little Red Corvette is the stand out for me, but this is full to the brim with catchy shit, not a bad song on here.
This album and " Little Red Corvette" were my first introduction to Prince back in 1982. I remember there being a lot of critical praise and publicity which was very well deserved. What a way to start an album: "1999", " Little Red Corvette" and "Delirious." This was his first album with the Revolution. I don't think anyone else is as successful at putting so much "stuff" into each song and making them great. I wouldn't exactly say busy but there is always a lot going on. It's impossible to pinpoint an exact formula to his music but they tend start to with a drum beat/rhythm and then get filled in with vocals, melodies, guitar and everything else. The dominant themes are parties, sex and romance. But, some of the hidden treasure songs are the different ones: "Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)" is almost an industrial song and "Free" is a serious song about independence. "D.M.S.R" and " Lady Cab Driver" are two great funky songs. This album shows many different styles, soul, funk, industrial, pop, dance, and you can definitely hear its influence on the future. It also does not sound dated at all. In fact, if it was released today, it would sound fresh. A lot going on and to listen to. It would probably take a week getting into this album to do it justice.
All around great album
Didn't grow up with Prince really, glad to listen to a full album to get a broader sense of his music past the hit singles
One of the real good ones - free to change my mind almost anywhere any time though
Funky, sexy and hilarious in equal measure. Pop's glittering sex dwarf at his very best.
I enjoy this album quite a lot, although there are definitely some tracks that are too long and more of a filler than anything else. Little Red Corvette is one of my favourite Prince songs in his catalogue, it's so good.
Prince weird androgynous fragile, rage-y sexually charged music is a beautiful combination of perverted and innovative (not to mention disturbing!). Cool mix of drum machine beats and guitars and vocals that are hysteric (Cyndi Lauper maybe learned something from this). Stand out track is 'Little Red Corvette
In short ‘1999’ rocks, and funks. It’s Prince’s coming out album to that masses, a big pop cross over hit, but one that still retains his cred (and the funk) as a musician. It sounds of it time, and yet outside of time, the heavy use of synthesizers and the Linn LM-1 drum machine ensuring it always sounds current. What’s also interesting is the thread of desperation and loneliness that runs through the album’s narrative in amongst all the partying, hedonism, sex, and general staring down of the apocalypse. Truly this is the appropriate soundtrack for the end of times….you can dance if you want to.
Full transparency - I've been a huge Prince fan my whole life, so I'm pretty biased, but this is just another example of how Prince has always been ahead of his time. I believe many of these songs would be hits if they were released today and not in 1980.
Prince impecável. Ouvi 1999 no repeat.
the sprawling genius of Prince - pop and funk and filth and love
Didn't realize how many hits are on just this one album.
