Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Great sound. Ahead of its time. Socially aware lyrics and boundary pushing. Sex filled. Dirty, raw. 8/10
Lots of things going on in this album!
Horny af.
fun, very much a product of its time in a great way. did not realize how freaky prince was
Little Red Corvette is one of the best songs ever written!
Best Song: 1999 I like Prince and this is a classic. The key here is that I "like" Prince, I don't love Prince. This is a good album and there are some big songs on here like 1999, Delirious, and Little Red Corvette. I'm not sure if I would say this is my favorite Prince album but it has to be in the conversation. Sadly, for every 1999 or Delirious, there are songs that are blah and just ok. 4/5.
funky w long songs,, liked delirious, let’s pretend we’re married, and dmsr the most
First time I feel like I've actually enjoyed Prince
Prince ain't it! What's not to like? Very clever when you think this is early 80's and had a great skill to bring in a wide audience as it mixes funk and rock. the man was a genius, and I struggle to believe that he's not with us now for nearly a decade.
Not sure if ever ran in to anyone who kept used Trojans in their pocket. But it’s Prince, I’m sure he knew some people.
Cançó(ns) que més m’ha agradat - Little Red Corvette - Automatic - Lady Cab Driver - International Lover Cançó(ns que menys m’han agradat) - Something in the water (does not compute) Comentaris: moltes cançons m’han recordat a na Chappell Roan Nota: 8/10
banger, groovy and fun to listen to faves are little red corvette and delirious
Tough when the by far best song on the album is the first, spend the rest of it hoping it will live up to the first. Still, a really good funk take on synth-pop. Backup singers compliment him really well. Highly sensual lyrics.
Had never listened to a Prince album in full, no idea why not, this is awesome! Extended funk jams, slap bass even on the ballads, heaps of sleazy weirdness. At least a couple of songs are destined for various late night party playlists. 4 stars, only due to the absence of half stars.
Cover matches the sound so well. Another album that sounds a little bit everywhere but not in a bad way. Fave: Lady Cab Driver (First Half)/International Lover Least: Free
I feel this is in his top 2 albums. Lots of hits but the most impressive thing is the continuation and flow from one song to the next. Amazing album
fantastic album, listening to this widened the realization that i have so much more to hear. saw a lot of divine influence in this, especially international lover
It's Prince, it's classic. Not on "Purple Rain"'s level though
Such a strong start to the album.
Enjoyed it
Great album to start this journey
A really fun listen and endlessly groovy
A really good album that makes me wish I listened to Prince more before now. Somehow I've managed to dodge basically all the-artist-formerly-known-as-Prince's music but god damn some of this is like peak 80s. And this is very early in the 80s to be at the peak! I do think some of the songs are almost a little bit too goofy sounding and haven't aged great (Delirious, All the critics love U in New York) but damn the title track and Little Red Corvette is great. The unrepetant horniness mixed with the Funk work incredibly when they do work. Almost a 5 for me but its just not quite consistent enough, and I get the feeling there's other Prince albums on this list I'm going to like more.
- I really love the two hits (1999 & Little Red Corvette, a 10/10 song!) and really enjoy most of the other songs, e.g., Delirious, Automatic, Free & Lady Cab Driver, etc. - The album is definitely sexy and fun - it would fit best on a dance floor or at a party with its funky groove, or to dance while cooking. - It is kind of a lot if you’re not really in that mood. Some tracks can be a overbearing in a jazz sax porno kind of way (e.g., D.M.S.R., Something in the Water...) and definitely go on too long, even the songs that I like. - The production is a lot and could have benefited by more editing. - I love his guitar work and tone, so I wish there had been more of that, though I get that this is supposed to be more of a dancey album, and even thought it’s dated, I generally like the synths.
Does Prince like sex? I can’t quite tell.
ive got 1979 (in melon collie), 1989 (taylor's magnum opus), and now its 1999. curiously enough, i was born in 2009. and actually its really good (but only the title track and little red covette) the rest are either not that good or overlong. 4/5
The most I’ve ever liked Prince (who I’ve always found a bit hit and miss) A super sexy fun record
1999 is pretty good but should be shorter to pack more of a punch. Little Red Corvette is SO good. Delirious and Let's Pretend We're Married are fun, as is Automatic. DISTURBING end to D.M.S.R. and did not like the crying at 7:30 in Automatic either. International Lover is sweet but the Toad scream at 2.45 was funny. Great sound overall.
Really like the first 3 songs of this album. Prince is majestic ✨️
I love Prince. I admit though, that I'm a fan of his later (90's era) stuff maybe more than this. Interesting to compare to Planet Rock, which was my album yesterday. Very funky, very synth heavy, a lot of long jams, but 1999 is so much more interesting to listen to.
Üllatas täitsa
A bit on the longer side but with really good material.
Very funky and I like funk. I thought it would be a good idea to break out the headphones for this and I did. Missed most of the lyrics, tbh, but enjoyed the experience of it.
So gooooood
So so so close to giving this a 5. I love to dance, I love prince, some songs were soooooo dated which makes it hard to go higher than 4
As a huge Prince fan, I do love this album - you can hear the seeds of the sound he perfected on Purple Rain (trying to pin a genre on Prince is a bit reductive, but electrofunkpop?), but it's not quite the overall masterpiece that I think the latter is. Two all-timers right out of the gates, and then it loses a bit of steam before picking up in the latter half. DMSR is awesome with the party call-and-response vibes, and the groove on Lady Cab Driver is impeccable. Some great solos but not quite as much shredding as you might want. Overall great, 4.5 if it were an option.
Really good, first full listen through of a Prince album and it worked well as a cohesive album. The GOAT
Very 80's as is the sound that prince brought
I didn’t get Prince for a long time but I get the hype now. Super groovy album. It took me many many years to realize this was no released in 1999. 4.5
Good but he also has better but still good though
Prince can really write/record/perform a bop!!!!! Opening with such a hit really sets the tone of the album - some songs def went on too long - not my favorite prince album at all but doesn’t mean it’s not danceable! He really kinda defies genres too for me - I like the album artwork too
always a blast, always a trip
80’s type pop Some catchy stuff Lil funky
There's something very dated about it, and some songs I find annoying, but also I still hear r&b artits doing this sound! When it works it really works! I heard this one before, I love little red corvet, dmsr and lady cab driver 3 1/2 at least
Solid 4.48 Stars
Great album! Starts bopping, slows down. Some great pop on here. Pretty horny dude, this Prince.
I loved this album. I’ve never been a Prince fan, until now I guess. The title track of this record is fantastic and a great opener. “Little Red Corvette” is a fantastic pop tune and “Delirious” is pop perfection. I did find “Let’s Pretend We’re Married” to be overly long and kind of boring though. “D.M.S.R.” Has a catchy ass chorus and I loved it. “Automatic” is also far too long and annoying. “Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)” was ok. But “Free” was a very good ballad, and “Lady Cab Driver” was fun. “The Critics All Love U In New York” is also good. And the close “International Lover” is excellent. A very good R&B/Pop record from the early 80s, excellent record
I was pretty excited to listen to another Prince album on this generator after how good Purple Rain was. This album is certainly more risqué and hypersexual than that album, which is both to its benefit and its detriment. It did, at times, become a borderline uncomfortable listen. However, I think that's part of the beauty of this album. It's dark, it's sexual, it's political, it's exciting, and it is fabulous. I didn't really get the enjoyment that I got from Purple Rain, largely due to some personal discomfort with the moaning noises (which is just a personal thing), but I still thought that it was amazing. Very deserving of a spot on this generator.
A strange album for me. Some well known great songs, some lesser known bangers too. But then some duds in there. It’s still Prince though…..
Vanligvis høre æ jo på albuman og tenke enten at det hørtes ut som forventa, fordi æ har hørt enkeltspor og/eller har litt kjennskap til artisten, eller at det hørtes bedre ut enn forventa. Akkurat det her havne dog i motsatt ende.
Prince is unbelievable
i actively avoid 80's music but hard to deny the talent of prince. Everyone else seems to just be mimicking him.
Classic Prince. Starts strong and tapers off a bit at the end, but it’s a great poppy/funky album from front to back.
Funky
Has some great songs, but the whole is not nearly as good as Purple Rain. Several tracks (especially Automatic) are way too long, and Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) is outright awful. Drop that and shorten several songs and it might be a 5.
Basically what people try to copy when they make synthwave, but I got a little tired of all the beeps and boops at the end of it.
Great songs here, Prince still tends to be a bit of a mixed bag for me personally, but can’t deny it’s quality and the great songs hit.
I’ll start by saying that this album is really very good. However, aside from the two most popular singles nothing else really stood out to me. It’s really good and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I’m just not getting greatness from the rest of this album. Maybe it is really great and my expectations were just too high?
4 out of 5. Starts strong and stays good throughout.
This isn’t one of his best. It hasn’t aged well sound wise with the drum machine and the dated synth sound. Still, it’s Prince and it’s funky. Not a great deal is memorable though apart from the two biggies. 3.5 rounding up to a 4 because it’s definitely better than a 3
Fun, funky, and fresh. Favorite songs: 1999, Delirious, and International Lover
An early masterpiece by a great musician. Gone too soon.
God DAMN this is some funky shit. This album contains two of Prince's best songs; though obviously this isn't as good as Purple Rain, it's still a favourite and an extremely fun poppy dance album. My favourite thing about this record is what a goofy dumb mess it is. Delirious is such a stupid ass song but I can't help nodding my head along to it like a fucking idiot. A genuine criticism is that pretty much every song on this thing except for the radio hits go on for fucking ever. Prince really struggled to learn the art of ending a song on this thing. I didn't need to hear a video game synth loop for 3 minutes while he screams about wanting to fuck you so bad. Outside of this thing going for way too long, it's still a great listen and worthy of its praises.
Prince at some of his most innovative and fun. I really enjoyed how loose he was during this.
bought this when it first came out yet today may have been the first time I listened to side 2. Side 1 is bullet-proof dance music; side 2 is the other side!
Okay I get it now.
Another Prince album. Can't beat this for funky pop perfection. Maybe not suitable for listening to in the car with the kids ..
This album is Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic, and Devo chewed up and spat out through a computer. Some kind of funky nuclear fallout orgy. It really blindsided me, the unapologetic processed drum loops and artificial synth contrasted against the hot funk and animalistic sexual tension. Technology vs. human nature, destruction vs. love. The whole album is danceable, not really a dull track. I don't really know Prince outside his big hits, so it's reassuring to see he is just as talented in his big hits as smaller tracks. "Little Red Corvette" is certainly the massive track here, but the album's sound is better reflected in hits "1999" or "Delirious". Less famous tracks that stood out to me are "Lady Cab Driver" (sick bass and great guitar in the breakdown), "Automatic" (though it could be trimmed), "Let's Pretend We're Married" (with the lyrics "I sincerely wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth" then confessing his love of God a minute later). Where this album suffers is its length. The middle of the album is "Let's Pretend We're Married" (>7 mins), then "DMSR" (>8 mins), and "Automatic" (>9 mins). I'm not saying every track should be 3-minute-radio-friendly pop song, but the album really starts to drag on with these drawn out tracks. "Let's Pretend" is great as an extended track, but I don't know if the other two need to be so long. "Free" has a good message and is well-executed, but its composition is a bit cheesy and doesn't fit well among the drum machine laden tracks. This is all to say, there are a few places where this album could use trimming, maybe bring it to under 50 mins or at most an hour.
I enjoyed this, but the sex related content was definitely a little too much at times.
Day 55 Prince is obviously a musical genius but as much as I enjoyed a lot of the songs on this album I would have preferred them with a few minutes taken off. 7/10 Highlights 1999 Little Red Corvette DMSR
Pop excellence. Prince forever.
One of his best albums
Classic 80’s legendary sound
Party's over. Oops, out of time
Thoughts before listening: One of Prince's most loved albums with an absolute classic title track. Should be some good poppy 80s funk rock. Review: Yep....this is definitely Prince. Lots of fun songs on this one, especially with the hits on the front end. I like that even on albums like this where Prince is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, he's still experimenting with odd sounds and long jammy tracks. There are some cringey overly sexual lyrics on here, but maybe thats just because I'm old. I now listen to records from the standpoint of "can I play this for my daughter" and the answer here is only a couple songs. Lots of fun funky songs here, a number of which are going on the playlist. I can handle the lyrics on my playlist, just not when playing a record through the whole house. 4-stars
The good stuff is still good and the deeper album cuts are still fun after all this time.
"1999" and "Little Red Corvette" are among the greatest songs of all time, and "Delirious" is fun, but this album steadily, precipitously drops from there. It drags, but at least it's never boring. It also has enough WTF elements (the sexy moaning in "Lady Cab Driver," the weird police-radio talk of masturbation in "All the Critics Love U in New York") to keep you guessing.
Wow I did not know this album was so weird and long once you get past the singles. Little Red Corvette is one of the tightest songs ever so I was not prepared for one 9-minute song after another devoid of a lot of hooks. But still entertaining and fascinating. I can't believe a label let Prince put those last three songs on there (International Lover is something else) but clearly Prince knew what he was doing.
1999. Prince. Iconic. Rare is this. Some artists for whatever reason just emerge as a cut above and Prince is one of them. This is not my favorite album by Prince and that is why I will (give away) my four star rating now. Nevertheless it is a MASSIVE iconic, completely unique and takes up space in music culture history. I often speak about those at the head table, but this is always coupled with masters of the genre, those that define them. Prince made his own genre and defined it himself. Pepsi challenge: who comes next? Who is "like" Prince, especially in a historical context? This album defined a chapter in music and it is still as important as it ever was.
The greatest party album of all time is, perhaps, a little too long. A double LP is just not necessary for this one, and there’s too many songs that are overly long for the record itself. That said - what a fucking moment. Prince captured all the amazing energy of a 60s house band while infusing all the energy of Funkadelic, along with a heavy dose of dirty, freaky sex. It’s a classic album, but maybe it could’ve been just a single album.
I think this is my favorite Prince album so far. It really didn't feel like it was over an hour to me
Some great tracks on here, but some drag a bit on the second half. Solid 4/5.
Prince was a musical genius, and he was one of the kings of music in the 80s, where he did some of his best work. 1999 was his big breakthrough and it's easy to see why. The first three songs are 1999, Little Red Corvette and Delirious. Those three are easily in my top 10 Prince songs, if not top five. 1999 was also an influential album as it brought the Minneapolis sound to the masses. The sound that mixed dance, electronic music, funk and R&B. I love Prince, but one of my main issues with a lot of his music is that a lot of it doesn’t age well. For instance, when you hear a Prince song, you know what decade it's from. A lot of his songs have weird synths or that lame kind of bass pop or primitive electric drum sound that gives the decade away. You won’t hear too many Prince songs in which you can legit say, “I have no idea what decade that song was made in.” It’s not necessarily Prince’s fault. He had a style, hell, he invented a style. It just so happens the Minneapolis style didn’t age well after about 1995. However, I was surprised to find several songs from 1999 that did sound like they could have been made in any decade. The song Free is a beautiful song that isn’t as buried in the Minneapolis sound as to sound dated. I have no idea why it wasn’t one of the five singles off the album because it’s a very beautiful song. It later became a beloved album track. 1The music on 1999 was so undeniable that MTV started playing Prince’s music videos and MTV wasn’t exactly black-artist friendly at the time. It took artists like Prince and Michael Jackson to help MTV realize their music wasn’t just for black folks, it was for everybody. I’m listening to D.M.S.R. right now, and it’s just a straight-up brick of funk. I’m going to stop writing now and finish this song. Listen to 1999, it’ll give you a good dose of nostalgia and introduce you to some great songs you haven’t heard before.
Prince is one of many childhood artists of mine but I think it's the only one that I can't make myself to love in 100%. This album is really really good, but it's... Not perfect. It has its flaws. For example for some reason a lot of the tracks are on different volumes and have different mixing (???). Still, the incredible funky bass and keys shine on this record.
This shit rocks. It’s so funky. At times it really sounded like an SNES soundtrack with the heavy use of synths and other electronic paraphernalia. I know I have it backwards, though; Prince certainly influenced my beloved Earthbound soundtrack. I did not know that, “We’re gonna party like it’s 1999,” was a Prince line from 1982. How ignorant. I liked the three biggies, especially Delirious, and Lady Cab Driver the best. Felt a little uncomfortable listening to Prince have sex maybe 3 times, but the groove persisted. I also didn’t get why every song was 10 minutes, but if I was dancing at a club in 1982 when he told all the white people to clap their hands on the four, I think I would’ve gotten it.
Great album, but purple rain is better imo. Second half of this album is better than the first.
Best goed. Iets te lang wel. 3.5/5
I didn't know the last 4 or 5 songs. Killer opening with the first 3. 4.5 stars, do I round up or down 🤔
This album is a kaleidoscope of so many different genres! Prince performs these songs like a cat in heat but I’m not mad about it. Some of the tracks were too long in my opinion. Still one of Prince’s best! I can’t believe he never collaborated with Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth. Love the 80s futurism.
I've heard the hits off this album many times. This was my first time listening to the whole thing. My first impression, of course, is that it's great. A classic for sure. My second thought is that just about every song is far too long. I'm not usually one to complain that songs are longer than the radio-friendly 3 minutes, but its just true that the riff that's being played at minute 7 is the same as minute 2 and therefore is not necessary.
8/10 Favorites: 1999 Little Red Corvette
Ton of hits on this album. Could listen to Prince jam all the time.
Ive never listened to a prince album in its entirety. This one was really good. It’s dated by the early 80’s pop music style but a good album nonetheless
This is a classic for a reason. Simply, it's a good album.
1999 is the sound of Prince stepping fully into his prime, blending funk, pop, rock, and electronic grooves into something that felt futuristic then and still feels fresh now. The title track is instantly iconic, a party anthem with an edge of paranoia beneath the celebration, while “Little Red Corvette” mixes sleek synths with one of his most memorable hooks. Throughout the record, Prince pushes boundaries, letting the grooves run long and layering sounds in ways that make the songs feel alive and unpredictable. What makes the album so engaging is how much personality it has. Prince is playful, sensual, and commanding all at once, shifting between tight, danceable beats and more expansive, experimental tracks without losing focus. It is a long record, and some of the jams stretch out more than they need to, but that sprawling quality is also part of its charm. 1999 is not just a collection of songs, it is a statement of creative freedom, setting the stage for the even bigger breakthroughs Prince would deliver later.
Tää oli yllättävän kova, erittäin hyvää kasarimeininkiä!
I don't think there's much I can add to the discourse about Prince and his musical legacy that hasn't already been said by much better writers and experts. I learned that 1999 was his first album with The Revolution and it shows sonically. There is something more filling about this album with this collaboration of artists. 1999 to Little Red Corvette to Delirious is a fantastic 1-2-3 punch to kick off the album. With each track, the album gets hornier and hornier, but that's kind of the charm of Prince. A raw sexual energy unashamed to express it. No poetic metaphors needed. Dude wants to fuck and he wants everyone to know. You can hear the early influences for dance and techno music in bits and pieces of this album. The stuff being ton with synths and drum machines throughout is innovative for the time and the foundation for the future of pop and EDM. 4.5 stars
4.5. A little filler toward the end but solid classics on here.
groovy catchy and envigorating.
Prince was one horny mf
Prince's first masterpiece. Greatly expanded the length of his previous LP's and included the hit 1999!! Most of the songs are only good when listening to the whole album as a whole. Quite an inspirational album for the 80s and a preview for what was to come. I enjoyed it even if it can be difficult to listen to the first time.
This wasn't what I expected at all, but it was fantastic! The songs were interesting, varied, and engaging. A very good listen. DMSR, Automatic, and All the Critics Love U in New York were my personal favourites. This is an album of incredibly long songs which don't feel long. Excellent. 4/5 stars.
Prince man. He sounds so corny. I don't like this. But then all the sudden "Something In The Water" and "Lady Cab Driver" come on and I kinda like it? And then "All the Critics Love U in New York" low key blew my mind?
Funky and catchy. Incredible vocals as expected. Little Red Corvette was still my favourite track by far.
It's dated. It's overly long. The songs are ridiculous. It's Prince.
Pretty solid album ngl and I'm not even that big into prince. Lots of bangers.
I enjoyed this album it was a fun listen and I think I'll go back and listen again soon
Prince's seemingly endless appetites - for genre, for rhythm, for new sounds, for, uh, other stuff - make the most sense when you realize that the real target of his pursuit is Stevie Wonder's transcendent mid-Seventies run. He's swinging for *Songs in the Key of Life* (but hornier) every time out. But of course, he's not Wonder (who is?) - he's himself. And so what comes out instead is longer beat-driven instrumental workouts that reflect his disco roots ("Automatic") and eclectic pop confections that represent the closest he comes to Wonder ("1999," "Little Red Corvette," "Free"). And he's at his best when blends both ("Lady Cab Driver"). But fundamentally, Prince's gift and curse is that he can't imagine anything more transcendent than sex ("International Lover"). I mean, can you *imagine* him trying to write "Isn't She Lovely"?
Feel like I just got fucked by Prince. Album was good though, very good songs like 1999 and Little Red Corvette. I would have given it 5 stars, but was not a huge fan of Prince moaning in my ear.
First two songs are classics, those I knew. Rest of the album was new to me but enjoyed the vibes throughout. Lyrics got a little weird/crazy at times but that's Prince and the music always kept me into it. I wouldn't say I'm a huge fan after listening but I didn't find myself wanting to skip anything.
This album definitely has a solid dance beat! I could get down to this on a dance floor. DMSR is especially funky. As much of a vibe and mood this album is, I don’t know if it really fits me (despite me being born in 1999) because it’s too much sex and partying for my personal vibe.
Cool! Dance-y and Groove-y.
of course it's good but it just doesn't really hold up against purple rain or sign o the times so it's hard for me to accept that it deserves a spot on the list when so many deserving albums have been excluded
Don't get me wrong, it's a good album, I'm just a bigger fan of Dirty Mind and Purple Rain. If the rest of the album was as good as 1999, Little Red Corvette and International Lover, it would stand alongside those 2 for me. 4 Stars.
Amazing stuff, but objectively speaking also a tad obnoxious. Not great during work (especially “Lady Can Driver”, very distracting) and when I actively listen I just cringe here and there. Instrumentals, musicianship and performance are sick.
Every song is so long
Genre: Minneapolis Sound One of the better albums the 80s has to offer, and it’s not even his best. 1999 is a total dance party: 70 minutes of funk, sex, and grooves. A bit spotty overall (a double album is bound to have a dud or two), but there are some really great tracks up and down the tracklist here. Let’s Pretend We’re Married and Lady Cab Driver are two fav deep cuts of mine from Prince. Prince rocks. 4/5
I have heard of Prince's songs before but never heard more than say, 3. So I was pleasantly surprised with this album and how good the songs were. I like R&B so it wasn't a genre that I wasn't exposed to before. Little Red Corvette is one of my favorite songs of this album. Out of all the legendary music legends out there, Prince is the one I have the most work catching up to do. This is why I like doing this 1001 Album challenge, it gives me the chance to actually listen to legend's albums in their entirety and hear songs I had never heard before but fell in love with afterwards.
Ridiculously consistent synth-pop-funk bangers (which is apparently the sound of Minneapolis) from the regally pompadoured slinky twink. I'd say some of the more ballad-y tracks sound a bit "of their time", but this is more than made up for by how much he sings about his knob.
80s drum are shag but some decent tunes
This album is worth it just for the horny cabin call on “International Lover”: “We are now making our final approach to satisfaction / Please bring your lips, your arms, your hips into the upped and locked position / for landing / Can you feel it?” Then there are all-time bangers like “Little Red Corvette” and the title track, plus weird new wave flourishes and plenty of electro-funk workouts. Sure, I wonder about how many Prince albums will make this list and which ones I’d nominate, but the man comes off like a hypersexual mad scientist on 1999 and it’s hard to argue against it.
The LP version I have has the 3 opening tracks on one side. One of those 'most perfect sides' ever made. The rest of the album is fun. It's Prince. Prince is great. Prince was also prolific so maybe didn't always edit down as much as he could have but it's hard to not like a Prince album.
This has several good hits. Not my favorite one from Prince, but it's got a nice mix of funk and groove. Giving this one a 4.
This is about what you would expect from generational freak of nature type talent. Some of the sounds are dated but the music does the job. You can really hear the James Brown influence on this one. The title track is a masterpiece.
Man how did I live my life without ever having listened to this album in full before now and only hearing songs from it here or there? What a shame.
An album full of bangers
Un album qui monte en puissance avant de faiblir sur la fin.
Prince is the King. His talent is off the charts and these are great songs but they’re not as rich or well produced as his later work. This is Prince at a party, keeping it light (except in the sexual sense, which was never light with that man). Long live Prince. It’s a 4.
So difficult to review from a few listens through. It was more extreme than I expected in just about every way. It was funkier, more sexual (verging on perverted), more dated production, more intense, more experimental. I loved so much of it but there were definitely bits that tried my patience.
Never heard it before, some huge bangers and also some bizarre stuff (what the hell is Lady Cab Driver). Let's Pretend We're Married was my fav, sounds like New Traditionalists-era Devo with better vocals
Always thought Prince was a bit overrated. He's still good, just not as good as advertised. This album has a few classics. Little Red Corvette being the best song which will be added to the playlist. 1999 is still a good song as well even if a bit outdated today. The rest of it is good but not great.
Great album - No duds - Little Red Corvette and 1999 really good songs - would have probably gone 9 if out of 10 - settled on 4 - was really good but not 5 out of 5.
good stuff
87% Best: 1999; Little Red Corvette; Delirious; D.M.S.R.; Lady Cab Driver Must-Hear? Sure
4/5
Awesome album 4/5
A purple, pulsating, provocative parade of polished, playful, party-perfect pop.
Having not heard this for many years, I had great anticipation. Starts off brilliantly with 1999, Let's go crazy, and Little Red Corvette. After that, it becomes quite 'early 80's', with lots of drum machines, slightly tinny sounding sounds floating around. The 2nd half of the album hasn't aged well. Still as funky as the most funky if artists but a little old. I feel sad saying all of this and will still rate this highly but mixed emotions here.
Not massive prince fan but can appreciate this one. Deserves the hype. Prefer purple rain
#41 1999 ~ Prince This album is considered his big breakthrough and it does a great job catching the ear with its sharp synths, angular guitar riffs and a general sense of fun and rhythm. Noticeably, each song is significantly longer than usual, understandable because this is essentially a dance record for the club made into funky pop rock. This allows Prince to fill in and put in whatever extravagance he likes, from his sexual shrieks to ad libs to chorused vocal harmonies to some very cool unusual solos. It's a dazzling record filled with songs to make one jive or shake, although the aforementioned length means that occasionally you feel the magic rub off after a while, especially to the later half of the album. Overall a very dazzling record for when you want to get into a very sweaty mood.
It's still quite good, what else would it be, but I feel a lack of cohesion in this album and a slight lack of quality control. The sex noises definitely weren't required for me. But with a single like 1999 you really can't go wrong.
it's Prince
Sexy as fuck. I normally hate double albums but this one is just so cool and Prince is one of a kind.
good album. a highly underrated guitar player
3.5 - Good
I very much enjoyed this album listen! There’s a reason why Prince is still a music icon even after his passing. I’d never actually listened to a whole Prince album before so that was a fun experience. I loved the rock, funk, and synth vibes of this album and how sexy the album sounded. I would definitely listen to this album again!
Entretenido.
The Prince album starts off SUPER strong - 1999, Little Red Corvette, and Delirious ... and then kinda sounds like it’s a movie soundtrack for a John Candy movie from the 80's
нормалек.
Sexy pop at its best
Very funky album Positives: The album is well written with infectious grooves. Many songs are very catchy and enjoyable Negatives: The first half of the album feels very monotonous and the lyrics are superficial
Awesome
I did not really click with Prince until I was older. This is not something I'd listen to every day, but pretty enjoyable. Obviously some stone cold classics on this disc.
funky, hippy pop. i really enjoyed it.
Autres bonnes tounes pas trop gâchées : Free, Lady Cab Driver, All the Critics Love U in New York et International Lover. En conclusion, si on oubli les 3 premières, c’est un bon disque, malgré le son qui a mal vieilli.
Me gusto el el álbum pero la voz de prince en algunas canciones no me gusto
Y'know as a kid for some reason I thought this album came out in 1999, like it was a 1999 themed album for that specific year coming out during that year. Not the case! But a good concept I think, anyone is welcome to it.
not as good as Purple Rain, and it loses me a bit in the second half, but it sticks the landing. around a 3.75
mad little fella with good tunes
This was awesome. Some of the songs are a little long but this is an explosion of sound and talent. Love Prince.
When you start off an album with a trifecta like that, it's hard not to give it four stars. I don't know about the deeper cuts but this is Prince at his finest - save for Purple Rain. A joyous listen.
A true pop innovator
Prince is so good experimenting with synth pop/funk music
"Don't worry, I won't hurt you. I only want you to have some fun." Great lyrics to kick off the album because I really did need to suspend my '80s music judgement and just have some fun. This album was a blast and I'll definitely be listening again, adding some songs to my regular rotation. My main criticism is how many tracks unjustifiably are 6-9 minutes. I love a long song if it is building and adding new elements along the way, but too many of these were CTRL + C the first 2 minuted CTRL + V 3 more times for no reason. Still very fun.
I like it. 3.75
Not sure if this is his absolute peak, but if it isn't it's close. Half point off for the title track being over played during Y2K and half point off for too much purple.
First three songs have by far the most listens on Spotify, and I was concerned listening to them by how dated they sound. All I could picture was that dancing Pikachu meme. I am so glad I persevered; track 4 - Let's Pretend We're Married - and all the following tracks were so much more interesting and entertaining. The remainder of the album is much the same, but ends on a particularly great track with International Lover. It makes a slight change to the song structure I've come to expect and it a very satisfying finisher.
This is a very 80s album. That said, prince does thr damn thing
So, if I wanted to list the positives of this album, there would be no end to this. However, I have some negatives to list: Most of the tracks have drum machine tracks that sound too robotic and take away from the songs. There are a few songs that Prince takes to some self indulgent experimentation, and it sounds kinda boring and repetitive and it takes away from actually good songs. All in all, this album is great. Prince is a musical encyclopedia and a true genius. An incredible songwriter that hit a stride with this album that opened the door for the masterpiece that is his next album. 4/5
Great album
One of the best 80’s albums. SO DEFINING! Great!
extremely vulgar but good! prince loves to yell
fun
Very good but some songs longer than they need to be
84/100. 1999 by Prince is a funk-pop classic, showcasing his signature blend of sensuality, swagger, and style. The album leans heavily into his recognizable sexual themes, wrapped in infectious grooves and synth-heavy production. While a few tracks might overstay their welcome in length, the overall experience is dynamic and iconic.
His fith album. Opening track, 1999, is a classic 80s tune. Fantastic track. Delirious another very catchy track. Let's Pretend We're Married, another cool 80s sound. Funky pop throughout the album. Sexy lyrics, naughty vibes, shake your ass music. Little Red Corvette is a funky track too.
Not my favorite Prince album by a ways, but I still love it. It could lose a couple songs and might be tighter with all the bangers on there.
Would listen again - a high 4. Not the best prince album but a very very good one. Faves: 1999, little red corvette, delirious, free
Chock full of so many bangers but lets be real: nearly every song on here is like 2-3 minutes too long. D.M.S.R changed my life.
Prince was such a weirdo. I love it.
Many TUNES
Something In The Water is a rad song
Time to party like it's 1999! My first Prince album on the list out of what I expect to be quite a few. Gotta say I'm a bit excited for this one as it's hard to not like Prince. Looks a bit long, but I'm sure that won't be a problem. Been meaning to get more into Prince lately so this seems as good a time as any to get started. 1999 Classic. Impossible to hate, just an incredibly fun track with an unstoppable energy. Great synth riff, funky bassline and Prince being his usual charismatic self, what more could you want? While it does sound very of the time, the performances stay timeless. Fantastic. 5/5 Little Red Corvette Instantly infectious. Amazing synth, extremely catchy chorus. Love the background guitar as well. How do you even classify this? Every little detail in this song could be the best part of it. Those lyrics are something else... Legendary performance over an epic instrumental. Pop masterpiece. 5/5 Delirious Seems to have a darker more omnious atmosphere to it to start, but sort of loosens up when the synth comes in. Quirky and a bit weird. Great group vocals. Fun and energetic. A good time all around. Good. 4/5 Let's Pretend We're Married A fairly entertaining track. The premise alone has a lot of value. Prince's vocal performance here is pretty eccentric and fun. The instrumental does get a bit repetitive however which sort of detracts from the track, I'm especially thinking about the main synth line. Strange lyrics. Decent. 3.5/5 D.M.S.R That's some vintage well aged 80's cheese right there. Extremely dancable. Infectious chorus, love the group vocals. Has a great message honestly. Really fun dance track. 4/5 Automatic This is really quiet compared to the rest of the album. Sounds really watered down and distant. I like the bass on this track quite a lot. Not too sure about that synth. The panning spoken word is kinda obnoxious, especially with the moaning. Terrible vocal effect. Cool guitar effect. The crying is quite unpleasant. Long as hell. Mixed. 2.5/5 Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) Strange synth. Decent chorus. Impressive screams. Uninteresting lyrics. Fine. 3/5 Free Extremely 80's. Cheesy as all hell. Fun vocal performance. Love the passion. Very charming. Decent. 3.5/5 Lady Cab Driver Funky! Really catchy. There are some really fun lyrics in there. The rap verse is kinda weird. Unexpected both lyrically and thematically. Decent. 3.5/5 All The Critics Love U In New York Jazzy bassline. The drums are kinda overpowering. Does develop a bit of a groove after a bit. The high tempo and the repeated chorus makes for a pretty fun combination. I like the strange background noises. Not sure what he's satirizing here. Decent. 3.5/5 International Lover Smooth and sexy. Impressive vocals. Oh so cheesy. Those airplane metaphors are so over the top it's almost funny. Good. 4/5 Well that was graphic. Started off kinda innocently with some absolute pop bangers then slowly morphed into a raw, sexually indulgent, hedonistic barrage of seductivness. Weirdly enough I kinda liked it. It's at times so overtly sexual that the cheesiness of it kinda just becomes funny. This is greatly helped by Prince's immaculate talent, where he truly gives it his all and manages to be smooth and cool while singing about things that could have a lesser man locked away. Besides the grandiose cheesefest, the catchy, dancy pop tunes remain the highlight of the album for me, providing som unforgettable energy and immaculate vibes. The infectiousness of some of the grooves on here would get even your sour old granny to the dancefloor. It's just really fun, and Prince just brings so much charisma with his insane vocal deliveries that even when the track is 8 minutes long you kind of forgive him for it, even if it's a bit egregious to stretch out some of these songs that much. Overall, elegant, fun, smooth and extremely 80's. Something that can easily brighten your day. 3.5/5 rounded up to a 4/5
4.3 - I feel like I could really do a deep dive with prince. Really enjoyed this. When he's on, he really is great. Some songs were a bit meandering but I think with more listens, it could rise
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray. Here we have another slice of idiosyncratic psychosexual pop from the Purple One working his way to Purple Rain. This record has some iconic songs and is undeniably funky but it's not my favorite — a few too many dips in the back half to get lost in even if all the critics love u in New York.
i'm not a huge prince fan and i'm fairly new to listening to him as a whole (i know, i know, it's crazy). i'm kind of two minds about this one. it's a pretty fun album. it's a bit zany and very synth heavy. it's really horny (i don't really give a shit, plus it's prince, of course it's horny). i also felt like the album was too long. although i don't think there's much chaff here to separate from the wheat, it does feel like i would have liked it more if it had been streamlined a bit. i don't think it was bad but the length did end up diminishing my interest in it. especially since a lot of the synths can be a little grating at times (normally not an issue for me, but the more it goes on, the less i want to deal with it). overall, i still liked it, but it wasn't my favorite prince output i've heard.
Masterclass on funk pop Favorite track: little red corvette other picks: 1999, delirious, dmsr, international lover
Delirious is one of my all time favorite Prince songs. This album starts out on such a high note, that the ending feels less than spectacular.
Love Prince and little red corvette is one of my favourites.
Dope Prince album that showed the great funky talent of the man to come. On 1999, it sril relied a bit too much on the same rhythms.
1999 was definitely an album that was all over the place but still a really fun listen. This album was a case where absolutely no song sounded the same as they all had their own quirks and gimmicks that the other songs didn't have with some working better than others. This album does of course, reek of the 80s seeing as it did come out in 1982 and tried sounding as futuristic as it could seeing as it is called 1999 but it still reeks of that era in all of the best ways. I do think that not all of the creative ideas in the songs were handled perfectly as some could be annoying. It is a shame though, because without those annoying bits, this genuinely would have been a 5 star album but alas, we can't have that can we? Best Song: D.M.S.R. Worst Song: All The Critics Love U In New York
One sexy album
4.5
Leuk aan het begin, wel wat lang
4.8 but shoulda ended half way through
hell yeah
this one's for Yosemite Sam
One star less because of the moaning
The hight points are so incredibly high, but the low points are very meh.
Good solid Prince without the exact amazingness that makes it untouchable like Purple Rain 8/10
This album wants to make me party like it's 1999. The songs are too long, and I wish there was a better ending, but Prince was a legend whom posthumously entertains us. Oh, do I also wish it was 1999 again. Favorite Track: "1999"(take me back).
Some of the back half is pretty weak but overall solid
Super catchy pop record. But man the songs were long. This guy is super talented and I thought this was his debut. This could have been 5 stars if it showcased more of his guitar playing skills.
I love, admire, respect and miss Prince. His Lovesexy show in Birmingham is still up there in my top five ever gigs. His musicianship and his ability to bring the party is always extraordinary, but for me his songwriting isn't *always* amazing. I found a lot of filler here. I would probably go 7 out of 10, but I simply can't round it down, because the man had charisma from the top of his hat to the pointy tips of his boots. DMSR, indeed.
Impeccable vibes. First and some of greatest work by Prince. Makes me want to party like it’s 1999
Reinventing pop
I'm supposed to like this more. I like Dirty Mind and Purple Rain the correct amount.
I was sleepin' when I heard this, forgive me if I think I'm gay
Absolute funkenstein, of course. Prince becoming PRIIIIINCE. Some of these songs go on way too long is all. Partial demerit. But Purple Rain is around the corner.
In an era of horny motherfuckers Prince might have been the horniest.
As the title track states, this is a party. Damn, I wish I had been invited to party with Prince, but I guess I was -10 in 1982
I like the hits on this one. And the other ones are…fine. I like them just fine. This album isn’t ’Purple Rain,’ for sure. Some of the duds are truly duds and just don’t land with me. But..It’s Prince! Wish there were half-stars here. I’d probably go 3.5.
MJ fast cool typ
Hell yeah! I'm always down for some Prince. Purple Rain is still one of the best albums I've listened to for this album project, so I was excited to listen to its predecessor, 1999. In a recently released video on Michael Jackson by one of my favorite music YouTubers, this album was likened to being Prince's "Off the Wall" in that its the album that put him on the map, but was just before the huge one that everyone knows and loves. Now, I have yet to listen to Off the Wall, but I have now heard both of the Prince albums in question. I don't know where I was going with this tangent. I guess now's a good time to say that this album isn't as good as Purple Rain, but that's kind of a given. Not many albums are. However, 1999 is still an excellent album. There's a ton to love here. The music is just awesome. The blending of funk, synth-pop, R&B, and new wave that made Purple Rain so great is still here in full force with a solid amount of variety between each song. The songs, by the way, are all good, with the best ones being phenomenal. I don't think any of the songs here are better than the best songs on Purple Rain, but songs like the opening title track and "Little Red Corvette" get pretty close. Of course, those are the first two songs, which leads me to a slight complaint regarding the album. It does kind of peak at the beginning. The opening tracks are excellent. Those two I mentioned earlier plus "Delirious" make up an excellent first side. But while the later part of the album does have some great songs, including the closer, "International Lover," it doesn't reach the highs of the first few songs. As for other complaints, the album is definitely on the longer side, largely due to the song lengths. I wouldn't say the album or its songs drag on for too long, but some of them kind of push that line a bit. Still, all of the time spent is spent well with some great music. Additionally, some parts of the lyrics weren't my favorite, but that's just my personal taste. Still, the good things about this album more than outweigh the few minor nitpicks I have. Prince's style is as strong as ever in this absolute classic of an album. With its playfully sexual theming, fantastic musicianship, and the sheer showmanship of Prince himself, 1999 has its place in music history as a bold album that was a sign of great things to come later. High 4/5.
Ein spannendes Prince-Album. Bester 90er R&B mit vielen Pop/Electro Elementen. Ein richtungsweisendes Album. Da nicht ganz mein Musikgeschmack gibt es: 4/5
Ahead of its time
One wishes the production had retained a bit more gleam and something could be done about the ultimate-'80s synth, which don't sound great. That said, "1999" is an all-time party cut, "Little Red Corvette" is an all-timer, period, but it's the non-hits on the backside ("Free" and "Lady Cab Driver" and "All the Critics Love You" and "International Lover" ) that put this over the top as a classic. One prefers Purple Rain anyway.
Fun. Funky. Skronky. Sexy. 4/5
Ooh… I still really like this for the same reasons that I like Purple Rain, but I didn’t enjoy it quite as much. Maybe it’s the fact that it stretched on just a bit too long, or that the lyrics were more overtly sexual (which I understand is a lot of what Prince music is about, but it’s still not my favorite). However, it still sounds great and the title track is excellent. Favorite Track: 1999
This was a fun listen. I really only knew Prince's hits, but listening to a full album was a treat. Every song was interesting and made me want to dance, and Lady Cab Driver really had a lot of interesting lyrics in the bridge. However, I could do without "All the Critics Love You in New York". I don't think these songs lyrically or musically hit as hard as anything on Purple Rain, but it was still an enjoyable listen and I liked every song (even though some of them were corny). I can't rate this a 3 because it isn't middle of the road, but a 4 seems high. I'll give it a 4 anyway because it's Prince.
It was a bit repetitive, but overall interesting. Very much poppy, but that doesn't have to be bad.
Tracks are like pop songs if they were actually interesting musically. Not 100% my type of sound but pretty good.
Really cool. Hedonistic party of an album even if it's not as good as Purple Rain. I'm wondering, did any artists straight up sing "I want to fuck you" before Prince? Anyway, it rules and it's a must-listen. #123
sensational. much ink has been spilled over Prince's virtuosity as a singer, songwriter, engineer, producer, multi-instrumentalist and conceptualist. 1999 displays this myriad set of abilities better than any other Prince album that had come before. the singles are well-known for good reason, but the deep cuts are just as stimulating. you're not likely to find many records funkier than this that also have such a strange, off-kilter feeling. it reminds me a little bit of There's a Riot Goin' On by Sly, which captures a similar feeling of unease which was also very much influenced by global politics! the second of the two LPs that make up 1999 gets especially weird, but if that's your thing (and it's definitely mine) then you'll get more than your fill. strong 8/10.
Iconic! Fun! Could be repetitive, sometimes to great effect sometimes not. Highlights include Little Red Corvette and D.S.M.R. Every time I would doubt a song he’d sing the title and I’d be back tbh.
1999 by freak
Full of life
There's a lot to digest here on 1999, but it's very good overall. The album definitely kicks off with its best foot, as the title track and Little Red Corvette are my favorites for sure, but there are some highlights later in the tracklist, names D.M.S.R. and Let's Pretend We're Married. This one is far from toppling it's successor, Purple Rain, in terms of my preferred Prince record. However, it's very good, and I wouldn't be gobsmacked to hear someone say this is their favorite.
This isn’t my favorite Prince album. It’s got some real bangers on it, though. It’s almost a 5?
It's a 4, probably on the better side of the Prince albums on this list. 4/5
Starts off strong with 1999 and Little Red Corvette.
This should probably be three stars. It's long, and weird, and it probably wouldn't be my go-to Prince album. I liked Sign O' The Times more, and I rated that four (well, 4.5) stars. But I'm bumping this up because: 1) The song 1999 is soooo good, and 2) Come on, who else was doing stuff like this? We didn't deserve Prince!
4.5
Groovy, slick album. Some song feels a bit long but still catchy and a good listen.
Is it Prince at his best no but.. Prince not at his best is still amazing and better than a ton of albums considered great. I love it I listen often. Streamed but now going to play the record. Firing up the turntable and start partying.
I've owned a copy of 1999 on vinyl for close to twenty years, but I've never listened to all of it. this will be my second Prince album to review, after Purple Rain, which I gave five stars. I'm familiar with the first three songs off of this album (Girl Talk uses a fantastic sample of "Delirious" in one of the songs on his album All Day), but I don't think I've heard any of these other songs. I would call myself a casual Prince fan, so I'm excited to listen to this today! I thought 1999 was really good, but it was a bit too much for me. I love synthesizers, so I found the overall sound really enjoyable, but some of the songs on this album just felt incredibly laborious, and I would find myself pretty bored by the time some of them wrapped up. I have no problem with longer songs, but I just want the journey to be worth it. “Purple Rain” goes on for over eight minutes, but it holds you in its grip the entire time, and in the end, it pays off in spades, as you’re rewarded with one of the most beautiful guitar solos of all time. I can’t say that for “Automatic” and “Lady Cab Driver” though. This album still does a lot really well though. “1999” is a fantastic lead-off track. The synthesizers are bright and fun, and even though the lyrics are about nuclear annihilation, “1999” has an infectious energy. The song’s structure is great too, and I love the disco dance feeling of the song’s last two minutes. The vocals are fantastic too, and the multiple singers really brings the party atmosphere to life. “Little Red Corvette” is my favorite song on the album though. The blending of guitars and synthesizers is perfect, and creates a sound that just oozes sexiness. The guitar solo is fantastic, and I love the echoing vocals on the bridge. “Little Red Corvette” feels like a battle between restraint and sexual release, and if any song on this album was going to be nine minutes long, it should have been this one. “Delirious” is great too, and I love its funky rhythms, bopping bass line, and screechy synthesizer tones. The intro reminds me of the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” but the Pointer Sisters were nowhere near this funky. Prince does a great job on this album of crafting a really unique sound, full of funk, groovy bass lines, fantastic guitars, and shining synthesizers. My biggest beef is that this album is too big and too long in places where it shouldn’t be. 1999 is a really good album, and without it, we certainly wouldn’t have had his masterpiece, Purple Rain.
Had never really given Prince a chance before this album. When I saw it was an early 80s album that was an hour and ten minutes long, I figured it'd probably be a slog - I was very wrong. Somehow both dated and interesting at the same time, and was a super fun listen. Great album that shockingly didn't feel bloated despite the runtime and the longer than usual individual songs.
Feels Like a combination of a mid-night car ride in the 80s and a bad soft porn conversation
H O R N Y AS FUCKKK DAMNN
Perhaps a little too sexy at time. Still some of the best drum machine and synth work to ever come out of the 80s. That snare is to die for.
4.5
Sides 1, 2, and 4 are pretty much all five star material... 3 sags a bit, but Prince filler in the 80s is better Than most artists best albums (9.6/10) ★★★★½
One of my favourite Prince albums. The first 3 tracks ste amazing. 4.5 stars
I think this is a very good album, and the album when Prince really blew up. The first few tracks are stone cold classics, but there's some good deep cuts too. The title track, "1999", and "Delirious" are my favorites. 4 stars.
I love the jams. I love the beats. He exudes cool. It gets a little weird in the middle but the beat keeps on.
Prince brought the heat.
Overall enjoyed it. Listened on the way to and from work and at the gym.
Songs are pretty long but the grooves are great. I liked Let's Pretend We're Married and Lady Cab Driver a lot. The production is brilliant. I think it's not entirely my style and I got a bit bored, but I can really appreciate this record. 4/4.5
7.5/10 long songs; groovy
interesting, listened to it on the by
Really good
The groove the man has is undeniable. There are few unnecessary tracks, especially the ones that edge on porn, that would've made this a better listening experience, but it is a solid album.
I've never listened to a Prince album; I've only heard the well-known songs on the radio. It was good and I can appreciate the talent he has, but it's not my genre of music.
# Album Name: 1999 # Artist: Prince # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Absolutely great opener with 1999. What a great song. That backed up with red corvette. Wowza, what a start to the album. 5/5 right there. I have to admit though - thats a start to the album which is frankly hard to top. The quality drops a tad from there. From a 5 to a 3 or 4 in some areas. Way too many 6+ minute tunes on this album. Some of it works. Some of it doesnt. Overall id give this a low 4. I'll come back to it as i like Prince. # Top Tunes: 1999 / LRC / Pretend we're married / # Would I listen to it again? Yes

It’s a party! A weird, horny, end-of-the-world dance party. It’s futuristic but sweaty; a neon-lit dancefloor with an undeniable swing. Huge synths, drums hitting like a heartbeat, and laced with electricity. I also enjoy getting albums with songs I actively play live (1999); it's always fun. There is some drag in the album though, sometimes passing slowly, and becoming needlessly long. 11 songs at 70 minutes?!? This only works when I really dive into the "end-of-the-world" dance party theme. Starts off super strong, but begins a slow burning decline after D.M.S.R. Prince gonna Prince though, and I am here for it. Timeless. Rest In Peace man, you changed the world. ok. So here is a heavy procrastination record, months of delay. I recall Prince as being such an obscene try-hard-horn-dog and overdone millennial manic street preacher that I forgot he actually had some phenomenal funk here. But do not be distracted. As one must excuse an adorable pug humping your leg, so we must countenance the purple one as we extinguish all clothing materials, and so on.
First time with a Prince album. There was a nice blend of genres and it really grooves. On my first listen, I was not prepared for how sexual the album turned out to be but this did not bother me the second go around. Look forward to hearing other Prince albums.
Positive overasket. Produksjonsstilen er veldig veldig 80 talls på godt og vondt. Men dette var gøy å høre på. Tommel opp!
Although this Prince of the Curtain doesn't quite have that special five-factor for me, it is ahead of its time, unique, and outstanding as most Prince projects are. The blend of synth, funk, pop, and Prince's singing makes him a standout singer-songwriter, clearly ahead of his time. I thoroughly enjoyed this and there's quite a few tracks I will come back to.
Awesome
Iconic album. An imaculate blend of funk, pop, soul and rock. Essential 1980’s..
Overall: 3.9/5 Favorite song: delirious Notes: at 6.5 minutes per song, this one will be sure to keep you moving and grooving long after your dancing feet fail you. With the funky bass lines, poppy drums, and iconic synths, this one makes me want to do all the drugs and party like it's 1999. Automatic was about 5 minutes too long
Dá pra entender a grandeza de Prince. E o quanto ele foi crescendo conforme a carreira foi acontecendo.
It's Prince and it's fantastic, what more is there to say!
This album feels essential. I don't know much about Prince but it's kind of shocking how modern this sounds while not feeling like modern pop music. The space that Prince gives for his beats is something people just don't do as much anymore. I felt like I had heard most of Prince's catalog but there was a lot of classic songs that I've just completely forgotten. The whole thing assembled really confidently and I probably enjoyed this album as much as purple rain. Side note I spent 9 months in 1999 unemployed living large and I don't remember any of it. I truly embodied the spirit of 1999.
While long, this is a better prince album than the last one we got. The length even adds to it rather than detract as the songs are heavily funk leaning and there's plenty of room for good solos from multiple instrumentalists and jam style playing. I think my favorites are Little Red Corvette and D.M.S.R., which I hadn't heard before. It's not quite P-Funk level funk but it's got just enough of it to carry the grooves and it has that weird Prince flair that makes him what he is.
Classic.
Prince - 1999 It is way longer than I expected, but nonetheless there were still powerful moments throughout the album. And as expected coming from Prince, this album sounds really catchy and fun, although it's sensual too. Overall, this is really good! 1.- 1999 = 10/10 2.- Little Red Corvette = 10/10 3.- Delirious = 7/10 4.- Let's Pretend We're Married = 9/10 5.- D. M.S.R. = 8/10 6.- Automatic = 9/10 7.- Something in the Water (Does Not Compute) = 6/10 8.- Free = 10/10 9.- Lady Cab Driver = 7/10 10.- All the Critics Love U in New York = 7/10 11.- International Lover = 9/10 FINAL SCORE : 8.3/10
Iconic
Big prince guy over here. While not his best there are still some bangers on here. Solid listen all around.
That was a damn sexy album
One of his best
Only ever listened to Purple Rain in full before and I was only really familiar with the title track. Very good album, but a lot of these songs just go on for too long. First three tracks are great though. Fav tracks: 1999, Delirious, Little Red Corvette
There were some really good tracks on here but most went on a bit too long and the second half of the album wasn't great. This album definitely suffers from coming one day after reviewing Sign O The Times, which I think was better in every way. Delirious, 1999 and DMSR were the standout songs for me.
I love the energy. I found myself just taking in the music on the first song '1999'.
Love this, love this, love this. One of my great musical regrets is not listening to Prince earlier in my life. I think I was so stuck in listening to single genres, I didn't know how to classify Prince, so he just fell outside my range. This was the first Prince album I ever bought, and it basically didn't leave my car CD player for a month. 1999- completely overplayed, and still a classic. There is more stuff happening in the background than many bands have on an entire song. Little Red Corvette- I don't think this song is about a car. Because his music is so varied, I think my immature mind didn't realize that I was a Prince fan. I knew tons of these songs (and from other albums), but I didn't realize they were all Prince. Delirious- he created this ridiculous Sesame Street beat and then puts one layer over it, and just rocks Let's Pretend We're Married- did he just say we I'm going to fuck the taste out yer mouth? DMSR- Automatic- Something in the Water- Free- after several electronic, drum machine driven songs, Prince creates this anthemic performance, with a piano, guitar and drum Lady Cab Driver All the Critics Love U in New York- International Lover- The sheer 80s-ness drum machine of the songs in the middle keep this from a five star.
all the reviews saying the songs are too long...... you're all sick fucks (and wrong)... I'm gonna choose to blame tiktok. love how horned up Prince always was <3 a man of the people
Started strong with 1999 so I was like oh this will be a good one. But wow some of the songs are so long and a bit repetitive so the whole thing isn't a five. But would listen again. Appreciate the percussion and brass in some of the songs.
Too groovy to be a grind, it is a genuine surprise that 1999 is a double-album of only eleven songs, not one under four minutes. That's not how I remembered it. The title track is full of so many ideas that it doesn't show its six minutes at all. That's not always the case here. But starting the album with exemplars of two forms Prince mastered - the religious good time funk of 1999 and the aching sex ballad of Little Red Corvette - leaves it nowhere to go but down. Not far down. Not as far down as other people's best efforts, but it never reaches those peaks again. Let's Pretend We're Married justifies its full running time and everything after makes a game effort, but the title track is more diverse and dynamic than the last seven tracks together. You could make a reasonable argument for any one of these tracks on the album, but you would need Prince's ego to make an argument for all of them. It's a truism that there is a great single album in any decent double album and I don't care to make claims on what that single album could be here, but it should end on Free, obviously - that's the thematic conclusion to whatever eschatological ecstasy 1999 throws up at the beginning. 3.5 Decadence. ‘Let’s Pretend We’re Married’ - 7 minutes. ‘D.M.S.R’ - 8 minutes. ‘Automatic’ - 9 1/2 minutes. ‘Lady Cab Driver’ - 8 minutes. Even the title track - known and beloved as a 3 1/2 minute pop masterpiece, is an extra 3 minutes long on the album. However long the track stretches it’s always ‘good’ in a sense; every musical elaboration is slick and imaginative - infectious call and response, brilliant solos, silk smooth backing vocals, comically intricate syncopations, and momentary interjections of virtuosity on every instrument - almost all of them designed and played by bloody Prince. Even the sleazy monologues are dramatically effective and amusing. Here is an artist and musician endowed with seemingly limitless talents and he displays them here with all the humility and restraint of Adonis streaking at a football match. On streaking - the well-judged streak will last 10-15 seconds at most and at that the endeavour will generally have the goodwill of the crowd behind it. There will be chuckles and applause, especially if the game has been dull. Once the streaker has had this time, it is just and appropriate to submit to a steward and a blanket. But were a streaker to keep it going thirty seconds or more, dodging every lunge from an official and perhaps embarrassing a professional athlete or two by accelerating quickly away from their irritated grasp, some in the stands will begin to feel that they are being deprived of something. Boos and ‘for fuck sake’s will break out. Streakers! Remember your audience. 3.5/5
I have a lot of respect for Prince, and this album is a very good album. Both the stylistic diversity and the musical strength are immediately impressive and sustained throughout. In many ways, it is like Prince received his 80's toolkit in 1982 and basically used everything on this album and he used it well. Later efforts don't expand on it musically, but are lyrically and narratively stronger, if perhaps even a little more self-indulgent.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 8/10 Very funky, I enjoyed listening to this
I liked it a lot

The album is musically masterful. The title track is a classic, there are several hits, and such a funky variety that you don’t get bored (musically at least) over the double length album. Also - this 1982 album makes electronic music sound GOOD, not dated or foolish. Yet I’m not a fan of Prince’s hedonism, with my least favorite lyric being: “Work your body like a whore.” Prince has the occasional spiritual reference, but is most often amoral and occasionally just manipulative in his notorious sensuality. Favorite songs: “1999,” “All the Critics Love U in New York.” Other notes: “Delirious” anticipates “Let’s Go Crazy” from Purple Rain and is pretty fun. “Free” is a pleasant break as the album begins its descent. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Makes me really wish I hadn't been a straight square hiding out in a church basement when it came time to party likes it's 1999. I noticed the synth in a few of the songs sound a lot like the soundtrack from Sega's Sonic and Tails.
so funky and HORNY he was really showing off on some tracks
Confident. Sounds dated in parts. A bit grating on headphones but liked it on speakers. 3.8
Genial
Some absolute bangers but also several songs that were just ok. Favorite tracks: Little Red Corvette and 1999
Prince innit. What’s not to love. Maybe drop a star because it isn’t purple rain.
4- robotronic groove. Fav songs: 1999 and free
Some classics and songs that still hold up. But a lot of experimental work that is grating to the ears.
Very 80s, very dance-y. A fun album. The only track I didn’t love is All The Critics Love U in New York. That one dragged on a bit. But 1999 is a great song and it was a cohesive album
It’s Prince - catchy pop, weird funk and insane musicianship.
