Reviews (page 13 of 13)

Came into this album excited for the listen because it's Bowie and I've never taken the time to listen to any of his B-sides. Was very disappointed by this one though. Pretty bland, instrumentally it felt repetitive and weak. 2/5

Many of the tracks seem goofy and just don’t do much for me. I respect the artistic craft and it’s not uninteresting, but I don’t really enjoy listening to it. However, there is some beautiful instrumentation in the title track and shouty vocals in the end that I love. The transition from sense of doubt into moss garden is beautiful though. It feels like being 6 years old watching a helicopter flyover laying in the front yard (psychedelic & nostalgic). I wish I understood the album better though. I feel like I must be dumb for not “getting it”. Can appreciate some cool musical moments though.

like Bowie, but not so much this album

Not great. The lack of forethought is apparent on this pretentious, off-kilter album. There are moments where good musicianship come through, though notably not in the lyrics, but too often these are spoiled by some decidedly not-bodacious sounds. The ambient half provided nice respite from Bowie's awful vocals even though they sometimes felt aimless and repetitive, but I thoroughly enjoyed the calm of Moss Garden. The rock sections were tepid at best, but often strayed into realms of tonal misdemeanor. The importance of the experimental nature of the album was lost on me. 2/5

Bowie has some truly wonderful music! This isn’t it.

This album confounded me in many ways, the greatest of which is how much acclaim it has garnered. On my first listen, I was unimpressed with the loose and sloppy sound, especially the thrown-together-on-the-spot feel of Bowie's lyrics and melodies. The ambient back half of the album was a surprising relief from the disorganization of the front half, and the mostly lack of vocals allowed me to focus on the excellent synth, bass, and solo instrumental work. When I researched the album afterwards, however, I learned that much of this album was indeed improvised on recording, include the lyrics, and that pretty much tanked the record for me. I will gladly concede that I am not the best interpreter of abstract and experimental art, and I was willing to write off my lackluster first listen as my own misunderstanding of premeditated artistic greatness. But when I learned that my inklings of sloppy improvisation were confirmed, I lost interest in appreciating the music. It may be lauded by many as the pinnacle work of Bowie's career, but to me it sounds like an artist got bored by their 12th album. Stand out tracks include "Heroes", "V-2 Schneider", and "Moss Garden".

Genre: Pop Instruments: 2/5 Modern Translation: 3/5 Dance Potential: 1/5 Listening Location: walking to supermarket in Auckland Heard it before: Yes (some) Favourite Song: Heroes and Garden Moss Made me feel: Was surprised by this album— starts a little slow, great middle and then meditative music at the end. Liked the variety, but I just don’t love Bowie’s voice. Most of the time it sounds like he’s yelling.

Heroes is a great song. Not a great album.

Best Songs: Heroes Listen Again: No

I don't know if David Bowie is my thing

Don't care for much of this one

i i could be a good album and you you could be the listener but nothing nothing could make this a good album even if you listen forever and ever could it be heroes? not for one day

Honestly maybe its musical sacrilege but i kinda thought this was mid af. I feel like i am very forgiving when it comes to experimental ambience but the back half of this feels like a slog tbh. I like the last song a lot though

Really wish half stars existed on here so I could give this a 2.5 instead of 2. I'm rating these subjectively tho and not based on historical significance and as bad of a music fan it makes me I really did not like this album. I get the appeal and sometimes I like ambiance but here it just wasn't for me. The majority of the album with the exception of Heroes wasn't for me. Will relisten some and try to adjust my tastes but I don't think it's gonna happen.

This is my first full listen to Bowie and I just don’t think I quite “get” it , at least not the way other people seem to. I found it meh, if anything.

Unfortunately, I still don't "get" David Bowie :/ I wish I did. 2/5

"Heroes" itself is a 10 star song but the rest of the album doesn't really live up to the same iconic and timeless sound in my opinion. I'm a Bowie lover at heart but of all his work, this is my least favorite compilation.

And the creator of this list sure had a hard on for Bowie. It’s like all of his music. Just OK.

2/5. Heroes is good, rest is odd.

First three or 4 tracks are alright and Heroes the track is absolutely a masterpiece. The rest of the album falls pretty short of good for me though. Mostly due to Bowie’s “unique” vocal style.

Not what we needed right then. Seemed chaotic

Better then the last Bowie album from this list. Heroes is a great single & there are a couple others on this album that keep you engaged. It petered out at the end.

It gets way better than this for bowie.

Seriously front loaded, the second half instrumentals are weak. Like the soundtrack to a bad horror movie. I'd have been pretty disappointed if I'd bought the vinyl when it came out. 5 stars for side one, 2 stars for side two.

It took me some time to understand what I was listening and it's not exactly my style, but it's surely a work of art.

This is my third David Bowie album after "Young Americans" and "Low." Like this album's predecessor, Bowie explores electronic sounds in the aftermath of his reawakening from his drug addiction. While the instrumentals are foreboding and depressing, the lyrics are more uplifting and hopeful for the future. Overall, not his greatest work. Side A is rather lazy and uninspiring, despite the tribulations afflicting Bowie at the time. Side B is mostly brooding instrumentals.

I gave this a two last time I got it and while that is maybe harsh, Heroes as a song is not good enough to carry whatever went on in the middle there while the producer was absent.

Another album that left me completely cold.

Other than a few hit songs, kinda a dull ambient album

Not my taste. 2 of 5

Coincidentally, YT music has been pushing "Heroes" (the single) to me a lot lately. If it weren't for the fact that I performed "The Secret Life Of Arabia on keys with a group Wilton James put together for a few Bowie tribute shows back when the man kicked the bucket, I would probably describe this album as "the single and a bunch of forgettable stuff".

OK, so that's what a full Bowie album sounds like.

not his best work, Heroes clearly the standout track

Litt masete, ustrukturert. Treffer ikke min musikksmak så godt.

Maybe I need more listens, but not feeling this one. Bowie has some gems (Space Oddity), but in general is pretty painful to listen to for me.

I've never really understood the love of Bowie's music. I just can't get in to it.

I continue to not really enjoy Bowie

4.5/10

Some great tunes here plus some awful dirge on side 2 that surely no one could listen to more than once.

Heroes is such a great song. What is the rest of this doing around it?

Never really gotten into David Bowie. The album was ok. The instrumental songs were cool but didn’t draw me in. I enjoyed “the secret life of Arabia” 2.5

The secret life of Arabia... de dónde salió?

Distinctive but very samey, hectic, and a bit shrill in places. Fell short and got a bit off the rails in the middle. Not his best.

I guess I “needed” to listen to this album before I die the same way I needed to learn that Santa Claus isn’t real. Murder your darlings and never meet your heroes. My Buddhist name is the Lion of the Three Jewels so I’m gonna like anything about a guy called lion but that’s about as far as my appreciation for any of the first nine songs went. Heroes is fine, as a song. I should at least admit I’m happy to have had cause to listen to the lyrics because I always thought of it as this like, you know, car advertisement song, and it’s heartening to learn that it’s in fact terribly depressing. I liked sense of doubt and moss garden, they were a cool swimming hole in a country stream after the jangling melodies and inaudible and mostly incomprehensible lyrics of the previous songs. I’ve also been getting into soundscapes a lot more recently, so this was my alley to be up. Neuköln was cool too but the sax and synth were more blade runner than Nishiyama Onsen Keiunkan. That Arabia song at the end really just brought me full circle to annoyance and regret. I’d rate it a one if it were anyone else but Bowie, but like the unconvinced suicide, I just can’t bring myself to do it. Two stars.

The first half of the album has Heroes (a song where every single cover is better than the original), and the last half is just noise… trash album

The song Heroes is amazing. I don't love the rest of the album. It's very instrumental and feels kind of empty.

A strange album. Heroes stands out on it for sure. It is so different in every way from the other tracks. There are traces of the rough edges from the early-7s Bowie/Ziggy stuff, the obvious influence of the late 70's punk and it's rough edges. But there is mostly an unfulfilled search for a coherent sound. The songwriting is also forgettable here. I would have hoped for more from Bowie. He has such gems in his catalogue. This album is lesser. Why is this on the list? The whole B side is weak and feels experimental in a half-assed way.

Everything is pretty good other than the instrumentals. “Heroes” is a great track.

Has some experimental sounds I believe for the time. Interesting ideas.. But really not something I’d listen to personally. I know he’s a classic.. hate to bash it. Ahh

It’s too chaotic, too weird.2/5

Too experimental, only found 3 of the songs enjoyable.

I think that Bowie is overrated, and I never really liked the title track to begin with. Listening to this is not really doing much to change my mind. It might be a classic, but I'm not really moved. Border of two and three

Let’s face it. Bowie is brilliant but weird. The songs on this album reflect that. There’s a reason that “Heroes” is really the only hit single from this album. I found the rest of it mostly unlistenable avant-garde crap. But it’s Bowie so an extra star for that.

Strong start with Beauty and the Beast. Best song is obviously Heroes. But whatever.

I’m really surprised how much David Bowie I find lackluster other than the hits. It’s one of those times where what’s popular is actually what’s good. Except I don’t care that much for Heroes, ironically. His other hits are much better.

5 4 - Heroes 3 - Beauty and the beast (reminds me of Silverchair's last album) - Sons of the Silent Age - Moss Garden: Japanese mood music? But peaceful to listen to. - The Secret Life of Arabia 2 - Joe the Lion: what a mess; I actually stopped playing to check if I had some music playing in another application - Blackout: A 3 but for the intentionally off-key vocals - V-2 Schneider - Sense of Doubt: movie music? 1 I'm not sure if 1977-me would have been all that happy shelling out for half a record of mood muzak. Sure, Heroes (the track) is good, but it's not _that_ good. While I didn't hate this, it's too incoherent for me. Feels like a jumble of songs randomly pulled from a few different piles, one of which is marked "Still born" and another "Ziggy rejects". I suppose the theatrical aspect of some songs is to be expected but the muzak tracks don't achieve much for me. Besides "Heroes", I didn't mind "The Secret Life of Arabia". The rest, not so much. 4/10

I wanted to like it but to be honest I just found it quite banal and annoying. The sounds of the guitar paired with Bowie’s incoherent wails, could be compared to an alley of cats and chalkboards. Don’t get me wrong, there were some nice sounds in there, but they were few and far between. I’m disappointed as this album holds quite the legacy and I feel like I am missing some major context that, when I discover it, will transform the album into something beautiful and harmonious. Who knows, I might rediscover this album in 10 years time, with a fresh perspective and an open mind. That being said, I likely won’t be reaching for it again any time soon.

I have heard a lot of David Bowie over the years, and this album is the worst representation of his music I have yet to encounter. Don't get me wrong, some of it was groovy, but some was uncoordinated wailing with disconnected instrumentation in the background. This seems to be a theme of this app, to take a decent artist and give you the worst album in their catalog. I hope the albums get better from here on out.

What happened to the album? Is this a concept? Pretty weird but I love the title track

Chaotic

Not for me

Just liked the title track.

I could not even get through it. Heroes is great but I could not adjust my ear to enjoy any of the other songs.

Too slow. Couldn't keep my focus

A lot of "I get what he's doing, I just don't really like it". Title track is obviously great but nothing else I'd return for. 2/5

I have always been ambivalent about Bowie. Knowing this is a classic, I approached it open mindedly. I appreciate the innovation but still not a fan

Not a great start with “Beauty and the Beast,” but “Joe the Lion” was a bit better before the classic “Heroes.” I can’t remember which I heard first, but for a long time the version of “Heroes” I was most familiar with was the Wallflowers cover. I’m actually not sure which version I prefer (not to say that the Wallflowers are on Bowie’s level…). But the original “Heroes” is by far the best part of the album of the same name. The second half is instrumental, varied, and mostly not objectionable, but it clearly bears the influence of co-writer Brian Eno. Ultimately, one good song is not enough for me to give “Heroes” more than two stars. Every other song is a station-turner.

The title track props up this album.

Oh look - more Bowie.

Heroes is great (but Jacob Dylan did it better). After that, the rest of this album is just Brian Eno being a "non-musician".

I’ll never be a Bowie fan. In fact I think the frog that is now in Tom Holland’s mouth used to be in David’s throat. Sure, heroes is pure nostalgia but I still find the reverberations of his voice mostly funny.

If you remove the terrible instrumental tracks it would be an incredible album. Those tracks sound like a angst ridden teen discovered some new instruments and a synth machine. Those tracks absolutely ruined the album experience for me

This is just bad bad bad. Still have no idea how one album "ziggy" carried his whole career

I think I just like the earlier albums. Hunky Dory, Rise and Fall.....

don't love, unpopular opinion

Can see why heroes was the big single, second half of the album was essentially self indulgent poor quality jazz.

I really love the song "Heroes," but I've never listened to this album before. I had pretty high hopes for this going into it, but this was a really big let down for me. The album started off strong, with "Beauty and the Beast," which had really great instrumentals. The sound was complicated and almost bordering on overzealous, but the synthesizers and production really worked for me. "Joe the Lion" was fine, but "Heroes" is far and away the best song on the album, and is probably a top five David Bowie song for me (I now associate it with JoJo Rabbit, and it makes me tear up these days). But that's where the album took a turn for me; most of the songs after "Heroes" were pretty lackluster in my opinion. I wasn't a big fan of the two instrumental tracks on the last half of the album; they were pleasant enough to listen to, but David Bowie is a great vocalist, and I almost felt kind of cheated that two of the ten songs on this album didn't feature him singing. I think my biggest disappointment with this album is that the title track is such a wonderful centerpiece to build an album around, but I feel like that didn't happen here. I hope that the other 50 Bowie albums on this list won't let me down like this one did.

Not as good as Low, save for the excellent title track.

Oh wow, and I thought the first side was boring and uninspired… then the B side kicks in… This guy’s music just can’t live up to the legendary status for me.

had a headache immediately when i press play fav(s) - sons of silent age

First listen. I know "Heroes" but that's it from the album. The rest is new to me. Notable Songs: Joe the Lion, Heroes, Beauty and Beast Singles: ------------------------------------------ Heroes (#4 UK) Beauty and Beast (#39 UK) Not much stands out to a first time listener of the album. I think it's probably better than I am thinking after the first day. I'm sure my score will rise with future listens... For now... 2.5/5

this didn't grab me in any way. it was fine, but it just sounded like a period of time.

I don't really rate Bowie. There, I said it! Sounding very dated to me already. I can't stand his voice, hate his accent. It wasn't bad, the songs aren't bad, it's a good record, but I just can't stand his voice. Yikes. 2 / 5 stars.

I’m fairly certain that every Bowie album I’ve heard so far had knocked my sock right off with how good it was. With this in mind, and also considering that Heroes is my favourite song by him, I’m very hyped to hear the album in full. Songs I already knew: Heroes Favourites: Heroes Honestly, I’m really quite disappointed by this album. Other Bowie albums have been consistently amazing from front to back with no skippable songs, yet here we have tracks like Moss Garden and Neuköln with are very forgettable ambient tracks. I’d honestly say that the only song worth knowing here is Heroes. I can always appreciate artists trying out new sounds, but the majority of this album was just quite a let-down. And that saddens me.

Veldig ubestemmelig for meg.

I hadn’t listened to this Bowie album before so I was open minded coming in. I sort of liked the opening track, Beauty and the Beast, and Heroes, of course. But nothing else suited my fancy. He’s done better and if this was by some no-name artist, it would not be anywhere near this list.

yeah im not a fan of this album. The title track's good and there are some solid moments but to me it seems like it falls under the guise of "art rock" because they didn't spend enough time making it better

Another Bowie album front loaded with interesting stuff and fading to instrumentals on the back end.

Not sure I understand the concept of the second half of the album. Nothing outstanding for me

Idk man Bowie ain’t for me I tried but nah

Bowie still not clicking for me in general. The 'avant garde' section near the end with no vocal part was actually my favourite part of the whole album - musical but experimental, and def some great individual performances, guitar esp. I think I read this album features a guitar player from King Crimson? This was a nice surprise. Overall I wasn't really impressed actually.

Middling bowie - cull the number of albums he has on this list to his best stuff and remove the crap to make room for more artists.

The first Aly Alf of this album was cool. Lots of innovative sounds for the time. I’ve never been a Bowie fan because I think his voice is uninspiring and boring. I could look past that personal bias, but I cannot look past the boring slow burn that is the second half of this album; especially all of the instrumentals. The first half of this was okay, but I won’t be listening again anytime soon. Favorite track - Heroes Least favorite track(s) - All of the instrumentals

I've never been a fan of Bowie. I like parts of these songs. I especially liked Moss Gardens.

What drugs do I need to reach the level I understand this?

As much as I like Bowie, I can't say I like this album. Most of it sounds too much like noise to me, and there's a definitive lack of hits (Heroes is the only familiar track). I do admire the Brian Eno (?) inspired tracks, Moss Garden and Neukuln, for their interesting sound. But that's it. Not everything made by Bowie is gold, and that's perfectly fine.

Also a Pitchfork/Tyler special. Ryan will also overrate this because he is weak. Sludge sound. I guess this is because he was in Germany or something. Nice job putting 3% effort into singing (talking). Some of this is fine. Blackout is annoying. Sense of doubt is very dumb, though sycophants will try and tell me otherwise ("wow what a genuine artist!"). Stole someone's koto for moss garden. 2nd half barely any talking...I mean singing. Fripp not used enough to cancel out the eno influence.

Not my favorite of Bowie. A lot of the album was instrumental, which is cool, but it wasn’t my kind of instrumental, it was more experimental. Favorite song was Heroes.

dåligt. experimentellt på dåligt sätt.

Copy and paste. Heroes is more proof Bowie has some great singles but not many great albums. The title track is iconic. The rest is average. 2/5 on balance.

Again, I really struggle with Bowie albums. This is really experimental, a bit odd, and nothing about it really grabs me, other than the title track. I read that he put out 11 albums in the seventies and, based on the handful that we've had, I think he would've been better working a bit harder on 6... There's clearly shedloads of creativity and innovation here, just needs a bit more of a filter because a lot of this stuff really doesn't work. Still a Bowie singles fan, but we haven't yet had an album that I think is really good. 2/5.

That was weird

Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust are two of my favourite albums of all time. Always assumed I’d love this album too but it was just so dull. Heroes is obviously a classic but nothing else came remotely close to the title track.

I get that it's a classic, but I didn't enjoy one single moment.

Nothing particularly memorable, kind of boring all the way through.

i sure listened to it it's got some catchy moments but nothing in particular stood out to me

- Der Track Heroes war gut. - Der Rest mir zu experimentell

I don't like David Bowie unfortunately

more overrated Bowie, surprise

1st track feels dated, maybe of it's time. 2. less so, but still hasn't aged great. 3. classic song, doesn't suffer the same as the previous two

A lot of these 'great' albums leave me feel like I'm out of the loop. but, I really liked the title track, Heroes....

Love Bowie but this is a weird album.

I think I expected more from a classic Bowie album where the vibe was too slow for me and the only songs I really enjoyed were the two singles I already knew. Album was forgettable to me.

The title song aside I found this a difficult listen.

It's very disconnected. Bowie is great, but this album really isn't my cup of tea.

I was enjoying this ok until the weird synth stuff at the end. I didn’t think it went with the album at all. When I hear “Heroes” I always think of the end of The Replacements. That movie is 5 stars. This album is not.

Just don't like his style. As he says in sons of the silent age "can't stand another sound".

Just don’t get Bowie. Have tried and tried to listen to him but it’s just not as good as everyone thinks it is IMO. Some alright tracks but uninspiring stuff tbh.

I know a few of his biggest hits but I am mostly unfamiliar with David Bowie's work. I am definitely interested in checking out some of his other albums. This one, however, did not retain my interest. The only song I recognized was "Heroes" but only because of the Rammstein cover. The music was ok, and the vocal style/recording on this one made it tough to understand him.

good not my cup of tea though

Starts strong, but lands toward the bottom half of the 5 Bowie albums we’ve seen. 2.75.

It has that one good track on it I guess. Rest of it seems kinda bland

Bowie was never my music

Quite weak album, 2 because of the legend

So. Not my favorite. I really loved the song Heroes. But the entire tone felt too aggressive for me. It for sure felt like Art and Pop, which is an interesting intersection. It's definitely an album I may revisit down the line, but it felt at odds with what my nervous system needed today.

84. Heroes - David Bowie 10 tracks I'm not a huge Bowie fan so I was interested to listen to a full album. After listening to this I think I'm even less of a fan. It's just not an enjoyable listen. 2/5

Not bad. Big Bowie fan, but bit abstract for my liking.

Every aspect of this album grates on me. Heroes is an excellent track but the only track on the album worth mentioning. The album feels disjointed and despite being a remastered version, it actually sounds terrible. Its just not for me.

I didn't like it. Aside from Heroes - which I still like, despite it being overplayed by the media over the past 18 months - the rest of the album felt too self-indulgent. Maybe it's a better album when listening late at night, after a few glasses of wine.

Beauty and the Beast и Joe the Lion - не худшие песни на альбоме, но сама концепция напрягает - непонятно, затянуто, невесело. Sons of the Silent Age - поинтереснее, один из немногих хайлайтов пластинки, трубы нормец влетают. The Secret Life of Arabia - сойдёт, нормально.

nope, not for me mostly

Why? Why are you making me listen to another Bowie album?

Erm, expected to at least like this, but in general failed, so disappointed

It's okay. The only song that really stands out to me is Heroes, though.

Not very good. Heroes is ace. The rest... Meh.

Really didn’t do anything for me. Most of the songs felt either too busy and badly mixed or too empty. No memorable tunes.

Enjoyable in bits, felt very pedestrian in other places. Maybe because I do not have enough context to appreciate it in 2021. Wanted to give it a 2.5, need decimals.

Honestly just doesn't really stand out to me. Maybe it's just the age, but it doesn't click with me.

really bad sorry bowie

Not a fan. 2/5

Boring

Heroes is a good song and worth a star, the rest is worth a star. Overall I won't listen again.

Some classics but I found it really didn't grab my attention

Joe the lion was fun and the rest of it wasnt

The 1001 albums you must hear before you die are sponsored by: The Estate of David Bowie.

Not the best Bowie album I’ve heard. Heroes is obviously a classic track but that’s about it for this album.

1 amazing song which got it a 2. The opener was the worst Bowie song I’ve heard, and some of the tracks on the 2nd half were just straight up pretentious.

Just didn't get on with it, wanted to like it but outside of singles just didn't enjoy

I like some stuff from Bowie, but it feels too experimental for me on this one. Didn't like any of the songs on the album and almost fell asleep.

Eh I'm not really into Bowie I guess

Ei toimi mulle

Didn't like this at all really.

Really not my thing 💔 sorry David Bowie.

I did not enjoy it.

Did this need to be the 2nd David Bowie album from 1977 to make the list? I would sacrifice 4 of these for a Blink 182 or 2 for another Tom Petty. I'm not mad at you, David. I'm mad at the situation.

1970s nonce It’s just really fucking boring One star for the title track Favourite track: heroes

Art is subjective

Not a Bowie fan at all. Hoped this would be good but Nah. Very boring. A good few of the tracks have no lyrics, just trippy instrumentals. Bowie is massively overhyped in my opinion. Maybe it’s an age thing. He had 5 no 1’s. Released 26 albums, 12 of which without a top ten hit. This one was 1/5 for me

6th bowie. Just fuck all the way off

It was okay, not my kind of music.

not my jams

I tried. But I absolutely hate his voice. It feels personal now and I dont want it to be.

Another trash entry by Bowie, and actually unlistenable save for one song.

Didn’t listen

Det er 9 (!) David Bowie-album på denne lista. Så bra er det faktisk ikke. Gir dårligere karakter på trass.

Yeah, I guess Bowie is just not for me. I understand it is intentionally weird, but it’s a kind of weird that can’t appreciate. Love Heroes, will never listen to the rest again.

just some nonsense

Did not listen :/

Ughhhh not my thing.

Eh. Bowie is not my cup of tea. None of the hits he's known for were on this album. All filler in my opinion.

Bowie attempts to justify humis inarticulate brutality as the effect of growing up in "soulless" Corby, to which the track Welcome to Shitsville is dedicated, but it won't wash. Scratch the nihilistic surface of opening track The Hate Song ("We hate you all! Bleurgggh!") and you find workaday beer boys on a 120-decibel bender. This second album seeks to position them as six men avenging the underclass, but they have yet to construct an intelligible platform. Their forte is soundbites ("We are the chronic youth", "Fuck the evil inside"), and while that might be all that is needed to complement their wannabe-Zeppelin heaviness, real class warriors wouldn't waste an opportunity to rant, which the Speedhorns never get around to. The barbiturate sluggishness of Heartbreaker is pretty good; shame about the rest, because Raging Speedhorn is the best name of the millennium.

Didn't love it. Most of the songs except Heroes and a few more are a bit too loud and overstimulating for me, there's so much happening at once I can't focus on the lyrics, which I'm sure are good.

Such talent… wasted ;(

Boring tbh. It didn’t really interest me! I was never really a fan of David Bowie, and I never really listened to his music much. Just a me thing!

schon wieder Bowie zum fünften...? c

Yikes… this was a struggle to get through

not my cup of tea

5 star tracks x 1 1 star tracks x 9 Average track rating = 1.4 (rounded to 1) So so disappointing

I've always hated the title track, and always will. "Beauty and the Beast" has a passably catchy hook if you listen to it long enough: and by long enough, I mean that it took too long. The working title for this album was likely, "Bowie sh*ts out another 10 tracks. Sorry, but this emperor isn't buying these new clothes.

- maybe it was just my car stereo, but something about the treble-heavy mix was very difficult to enjoy and almost hurt my ears at times - if I'd bought this album as soon as it came out, I'd be pretty disappointed that half of it is aggressively loud and the other half is a slow, boring soundscape - aside from the title track (and perhaps only because of its familiarity), I didn't care for any of the songs whatsoever. I've tried several times but I'm just not a Bowie fan

This album STILL did not open my eyes to the mystique of David Bowie. I don't get his music at all

Jesus, the title track really does all of the heavy lifting here

One amazing song. Otherwise - nah.

Really not for me. Heroes was all right but I do not enjoy the vocals throughout the album, and the instrumental songs were downright bad.

I just keep hearing the same guitar sound in each song.

Sem condições...

I just don't care for Bowie’s voice or music or general persona.

I can't get into this guy's music bro

If I didn’t know this was Bowie i’d have assumed it was a monumentally bad parody album. God knows how Heroes came out of the same session as the rest of this album

Outside of the hits everyone knows and likes, Bowie just isn't for me apparently. And I can get behind a good instrumental, but what the heck was that?! 1/5 (and it should be grateful I can't give it less)

Not all Bowie albums are good albums.

Not sure that I am a fan of Bowie.

Heroes

I cannot express my complete confusion at why David Bowie is idolized after only listening to this album. Fans may be tone deaf, wish they could hold a note, or like the aesthetic of a drunk old dude at a karaoke bar mumbling through some psych rock instrumental track with paint on his face. I think the only tracks I could endure were instrumental. Many nopes. Vibes say 1 star but it’s probably 1.4

Don't his best album

Ironic they gave me my least rated artist on this website on my birthday lol

More Bowie no thank you. Sounds flat and insincere.

Not the best listen for running

Meh. I mean I know I’m wrong I just wasn’t very grabbed by it. I appreciate what a trailblazer he is but I just don’t really dig this album.

Heroes is a decent song but an awful album, 1 star or F.

initial impression: annoying, incoherent pop-rock genuinely unenjoyable most of the time, 'Heroes' is a classic though. 'Sense of doubt' is laughably awful. Why did it turn into a Brian Eno album. The final track was like the only actual song. Good chune.

Not fan of Bowie.

Too out there. 1/5

This can be done fairly short... Heroes is 5/5 and is an incredible song... the rest is pure shit. 1/5

I hate to say it, but David Bowie's album "Heroes" left me feeling underwhelmed. While there are a couple of standout tracks, like the title song "Heroes," the album as a whole feels inconsistent and lacks the cohesion and innovation I expect from Bowie. The experimental sound on some songs comes across as more grating than groundbreaking. Bowie's vocals also seem strained at times, failing to deliver the emotional impact that his lyrics strive for. It pains me to give "Heroes" a 1.5 out of 5 stars, considering Bowie's legendary status, but this album simply doesn't measure up to his usual brilliance. Die-hard fans may still find glimpses of genius, but for casual listeners, "Heroes" is a miss.

Partly heard before Saved 1/10 Top track: Heroes

No no no

A one track album. Not sure what drugs he was on - maybe the same ones the person who selected it.

Do people listen to Bowie's pseudo-intellectual, "experimental" bullshit and actually enjoy it? Like, do people throw these songs on playlists and play them at parties, or do they listen to this on their commute to work, or while doing the dishes? Do you put this on to relax after a long day?! Or is the love for this album akin to the love for the latest Franzen novel, where everyone parrots the critical praise because it makes them feel smart too, and also, no one wants to go against the tide, so they force themselves to love it because it's what smart people are enjoying right now, and they are certainly smart people. Am I insane for thinking this whole thing sounds like nails on a chalkboard? Even without Bowie's grating affectation, the instrumentals somehow feel full of themselves, like it's all too self-aware of its own self-importance. It feels like the musical equivalent of the self-proclaimed Communist in your Intro to Art History class who won't stop talking about how much better Dalí is compared to the Rembrandt you're actively talking about because it's still September and you're not there yet in the syllabus, and even after the professor tells him we'll get there in November and he stops talking, his presence alone starts to annoy you, because you're just spending every class waiting for him to start talking again. This whole album annoys me, even when it's technically being "quiet" with its experimentations. And honestly, these experiments don't even feel that ahead of the curve! I can hear free jazz and other, earlier synth pioneers all over this album who did these things better and earlier than this fucking record. And that's not even to mention how obnoxious I find Fripp's guitar sound and playing style. Honestly, I want to say "Heroes" is this album's only saving grace, but I don't even really love it all that much as a song. If this album – or Bowie – grows on me by the end of this challenge, it's not because I grew as a person, but because I developed Stockholm Syndrome.

David Bowie’s voice is frustrating. It seems like he intentionally speak-sings which makes his music and voice recognizable, but I would like to know what notes are written at some point. And then the other half of the album was random ambient sounds. I feel like I like the idea of David Bowie - purposely making a lot of non-mainstream choices just to subvert expectations. But I don’t actually like David Bowie in reality. If I was really into music I might appreciate it more, but as a casual listener I just want a bit more of easy listening. It seems he is always trying to make some point, but I don’t know what.

Overall it doesn't hold up very well.

Schwer erträglicher Deutsch Art Rock.

Bowie has never really done it for me, and I don’t think this is close to his best work. Most of it is meh. Highlight, if I had to stretch would be heroes, obviously.

not my cuppa tea

I've never listened to a Bowie album in full before, but this was a big disappointment. It felt like cartoon music... and not the good kind.

- The Secret Life of Arabia 1/5

All filler 1 killer. Nothing else I'd contemplate listening to again. Starting to wish it was 1001 songs not albums. Was hoping to uncover some hidden gems but maybe there is a reason I don't know the songs. 2nd half of album he doesn't even bother singing. 2.5/10

Not my thing

Too old

I do not like this era of Bowie.

This might be the worst Album i've ever listened to. After the first half i wanted to quote David himself and say "I can't stand another sound" of this. The second part of the record was surprisingly better.

Only liked Heroes, other songs in the album sound very disjointed and jarring. Especially the last couple of songs.

Es como medio de iglesia? No soy tan de Bowie.

Wow this was fucking terrible. Always thought the title track was stupid and overrated, turns out it's the best pop song on here. The ambient section is pretty standard-issue fart-smelling, but doesn't actually add anything. I want to give it another star just for being Bowie, but jesus fuck this was unlistenable.

I don’t like.

boring as fuck. almost fell asleep towards the end of the album.

Yeah no

Terrible.

Much like "Low" from 2 days ago, but decisively less interesting. I did not enjoy Dave's unmelodic crooning, nor his flimsy attempts at saxophone. The title track is not in the top 10 of Bowie songs, and personally I wouldn't put it in his top 20 either. So what are we doing here? God this list really could use some variety. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HasaQvHCv4w

niet mijn meug.

Did not like it

I hated it 😂

Awful album. Not a good track on it. Most of the 2nd half of the record was just noises not music. Would not listen again.

I don't even remotely understand the appeal of Bowie. This album was somewhere between garbage and a waste of my time.

Nonsense, drivel lyrics, devoid of meaning and passed off as art. Self indulgent crap. Heroes is the only island of sanity on thus album. The rest are a parody of irself.

This is the first DB album I've listened to and it will certainly be the last. Disliked every minute of it. The youtube adverts were the best part. I realise he has huge following, I just can't hear why.

Bowie not my thing

pedo olmasaydi 4/5

I just don't get Bowie. Not for me.

Als we zo doorgaan red ik die 1001 albums niet eens before I die...
