Heroes

Art rock that is just enough experimental in a good way. Mood of the album swings back between gloomy and upbeat. Occasional guitar riffs and synths throughout. Album ends with 4 pleasant instrumental tracks. Standout is the title track which is 80's ballad-y in a good way.

Oh wow, and I thought the first side was boring and uninspired… then the B side kicks in… This guy’s music just can’t live up to the legendary status for me.

I thought it was cool how there's just an ambient song cycle for 3 songs near the end there. Heroes and blackout are bangers. the rest I didn't find especially great

I enjoy listening to David Bowie now and again. I haven't heard this album in it's entirety before. I like some of his albums, I don't like some, Heroes falls somewhere in the middle for me. I do feel that side two is much more engaging overall.

Bizarre album. A few concepts within there which allows it to stand out.

Interesting album. Some classic Bowie. Transitioning from Aladdin Sane to something much more musically complex. The moody avant garde tracks come out of nowhere and pull the album into a weird direction. Thought Spotify had shit the bed for a second. They would make more sense when they kicked off side B of the vinyl.

I still just don't like Bowie that much... But this album surprised me. The instrumental tracks were awesome and with those this one is his best I've heard so far.

Classic landmark album

The title track alone is gold 4 stars right there. The rest of it is not so memorable. Gun to my head I couldn't name another one of the songs on this album I've had for nearly 40 years.

Whilst still defying genres in a way only he could, ”Heroes” is still an album that notes Bowie past his peak. The title-track ”Heroes” is however one of Bowie’s greatest works. Instantly captivating with its haunting melodies and emotionally charged lyrics. Bowie's vocals soar with a sense of longing and defiance. The song's powerful message of love and courage echoes out and it’s very hard to not appreciate this song. Throughout the album Bowie blends elements of rock, pop, and avant-garde music to create an accessible and classic sound. Brian Eno's influence is evident throughout the album, as he brings his experimental and ambient sensibilities to the table. The layered instrumentation and innovative use of synthesizers create a rich and immersive sound that bring an almost futuristic vibe. It’s a bold statement in Bowie’s career but the spark from the early 70s is not quite there.

A higher point in the Bowie backlog that straddles the singers’ excesses quite well. Dripping in production, there’s still a sense of the stripped-back human element Bowie excels at present even with synths and guitars blaring at full volume. The back half does peter out fairly quickly, but the excitement of the first is more than enough to sustain a whole listen.

First listen. I know "Heroes" but that's it from the album. The rest is new to me. Notable Songs: Joe the Lion, Heroes, Beauty and Beast Singles: ------------------------------------------ Heroes (#4 UK) Beauty and Beast (#39 UK) Not much stands out to a first time listener of the album. I think it's probably better than I am thinking after the first day. I'm sure my score will rise with future listens... For now... 2.5/5

I see this adheres to Low’s ‘bangers up front, weird instrumentals at the end’ approach, but I think Low probably did both facets more successfully, and first. I still enjoyed it, but it’s not one of Bowie’s best. It feels like it’s made the list on the strength of the title track alone.

An uneven album by one of the all time greats.

I don't really rate Bowie. There, I said it! Sounding very dated to me already. I can't stand his voice, hate his accent. It wasn't bad, the songs aren't bad, it's a good record, but I just can't stand his voice. Yikes. 2 / 5 stars.

I’m fairly certain that every Bowie album I’ve heard so far had knocked my sock right off with how good it was. With this in mind, and also considering that Heroes is my favourite song by him, I’m very hyped to hear the album in full. Songs I already knew: Heroes Favourites: Heroes Honestly, I’m really quite disappointed by this album. Other Bowie albums have been consistently amazing from front to back with no skippable songs, yet here we have tracks like Moss Garden and Neuköln with are very forgettable ambient tracks. I’d honestly say that the only song worth knowing here is Heroes. I can always appreciate artists trying out new sounds, but the majority of this album was just quite a let-down. And that saddens me.

Veldig ubestemmelig for meg. Tittelsangen er OK, resten er OK minus. Synes det er en rar blanding av instrumentelle sanger og sanger med tekst. Albumet snuser allikevel på 3, men når ikke opp.

Es la segunda vez que reviso este álbum y, realmente, no ah cambiado mucho mi opinión sobre él. Es disfrutable y va bastante bien hasta que comienza "V-2 Schneider", desde esa canción hasta el final de "Neuköln", por alguna razón, el álbum cambia completamente de temática y pasa a ser más bien una clase de soundtrack para una película espacial. No es como que este mal hecho, pero cuando empieza con 5 canciones tan "normales" y de repente las otras 4 son algo totalmente diferente, no es muy placentero que digamos. Por si fuera poco, tampoco hay mucho que ver en estas últimas, pues ni si quiera se sienten tan diferentes entre sí y parece más una canción de 17 minutos partida en 4 porque no pudo ganar su duración. Finalmente, a pesar de tener 6 canciones completamente salvables, no se pueden ignorar las otras 4, pues siguen siendo parte del álbum y no es un problema menor. Le podría dar 4 estrellas perfectamente de no ser porque, básicamente, medio álbum está de sobra.

Berlin Bowie is best Bowie. I think Low is the whole package and this one mostly peaks with the title track, but it’s still a great time. The man sounds as good as ever and I love the influences he balances here, especially the touches of jazz. A-

While the second half becomes experimental and instrumental, this is still a great album.

Love love love this album. It took me on a fun journey on my run because it starts with the more classic Bowie bangers and slowly moves into these magic etherial kind of floating through a magical night garden type tracks towards the end. So experimental with sound as always and interesting lyrics and stories. Wonderfully weird and creative and enticing. So much variety and excitement to be found with Heroes.

Much more experimental than I was expecting but I enjoyed it. Heroes is just the most amazing song isn't it ❤️❤️ deserves 5 stars just for that

What a great album. I wasn't that familiar with this one, other than the obvious songs. But it came together so well. Some really punchy bops in there I didn't know so well and WHY because they're just so good. Just such an exceptional song writer

This particular Eno/Bowie collab might be my favorite. Great hooks and experimental arrangements: what more can you ask for? Apparently this is a controversial opinion, though, since hard core Bowie fans like others better and Bowie haters hate this album most? Who knew? I enjoy this take on layered, complex, synth pop. 4/5

Better than I expected. I had only heard Heroes the single. The only not so good part we’re the instrumentals in the back half.

Pretty surprised by the instrumentals at the end, and then the disco finale. Bowie is always surprising! Loved the first and last tracks. Liked but didn’t love everything in the middle.

A little deliciously weird, but also a little boring… don’t kill me. Wallflowers version of Heroes took a very excellently-written song and executed it much better… don’t kill me.

Wow this was fucking terrible. Always thought the title track was stupid and overrated, turns out it's the best pop song on here. The ambient section is pretty standard-issue fart-smelling, but doesn't actually add anything. I want to give it another star just for being Bowie, but jesus fuck this was unlistenable.

ethereal and sublime. bowie is his typical unique self with interesting lyrics and haunting vocal delivery. three instrumentals (in a row) is a bit much. overall, however, an enjoyable experience.

I expected more from this. Didn't care for the first two songs or the instrumentals.

I hadn’t listened to this Bowie album before so I was open minded coming in. I sort of liked the opening track, Beauty and the Beast, and Heroes, of course. But nothing else suited my fancy. He’s done better and if this was by some no-name artist, it would not be anywhere near this list.

Not gonna lie, the first couple of tracks are a little too cacophonous for me. Can't quite parse a lot of elements, and I'd have to be in a very specific mood to revisit them. However, the whole experience when coupled with the moody instrumentals later on brought more cohesion than I was initially expecting. A very light four. Fave tracks: Sons of the Silent Age

Always electric, a full listening experience from beginning to end, and never appreciated enough as one of Bowie’s best albums. Great flow from track to track with some of his most powerful vocal performances; this sits just behind ‘Low’ in the Berlin trilogy but still second place in what is my favourite Bowie era. Favourite track is Heroes.

I love David Bowie, but I have to admit I don't care for much of this album. The title track is the only one I actually recognize and I think there's a reason for that. The rest of it is kind of jangly and disjointed, probably like the rest of his life at that time. Still, 3 stars because Bowie and one very good song.

I am about 150 albums behind the pack, being a late joiner, so I an working on my backlog. Time for Bowie! (hard to rate important, hisotorical albums - they are so important, but i just bagged Revolver, so ...). but here is my reaction. I dont like each track, but then Heroes, the song, is so soaring, moving, and lyrically interesting, ambitious and has the best of his Berlin period in it. I enjoy his yelling of the chorus, unbridged almost pleeding. this is the song. I'd like to find the trilingual single disc for this one day. Songs of the silent age returns to familair style. then the B side atmoshperics are interesting and totally unfmailair for me... Bowie is demanding. not going to gush about hsi as an album, but interesting symth expeirments on side B. I were an older man, I might have had blues, funk, jazz, Stones, Bowie, Cohen, (but probably not Beetles, Folk or much other rock...). I like the last track, the Secret Life of Arabai, and the Moss Garden was a surpise... NB: the track played next by the YT ALGO: "more than this" by Roxy Music. the algo knows me...

Today's album is the second of a trilogy of albums recorded in Berlin and known as the Berlin Trilogy. In the late 70's, Bowie and Iggy Pop spent a few years in Berlin, trying to get clean of drugs and alcohol, and that time turned out to be a super productive couple of years for both of them. After he released his first of the three albums titled Low earlier in 1977, Bowie toured with Iggy Pop, playing keyboard for his band. When the tour ended, he assisted in the recording of Iggy's second solo album Lust for Life, then regrouped at the recording studio with Brian Eno to record this album that same year. Most of the tracks on this record were composed on the spot in the studio, with lyrics not being written until Bowie stood in front of the mic! What a busy year, and it goes to show how much of a stellar musician Bowie was. The second half of the album, starting at the song V-2 Schneider is a huge instrumental number. It reminds me of outer space quite a bit, and is quite relaxing. I feel like it would be good music to meditate or do yoga to. Overall, a great, typical quirky Bowie album. Not my favourite album of his, but definately a gem! Bowie still not clicking for me in general. The 'avant garde' section near the end with no vocal part was actually my favourite part of the whole album - musical but experimental, and def some great individual performances, guitar esp. I think I read this album features a guitar player from King Crimson? This was a nice surprise. Overall I wasn't really impressed actually.

Never been much of a Bowie fan, I think because his voice is quite different and music is not ur typical pop fare. Taking the time to go through Heroes has definitely expanded my appreciation and knowledge.

It was not really my cup of tea but it was okay but I thought all the songs were kinda just the same thing sang over again, but it was okay tho 6.5/10

This wouldn't be my top Bowie album. As I've mentioned as far back as the first album we ever did, I'm not a HUGE Bowie fan. Some of his songs are amazing but his overall library has never captured me. And this is a good example album. I enjoyed some of the songs, and I've heard Heros before as a cover (which I liked better). Some of these were strange, but it wasn't a bad thing. Just didn't leave any impression with me. I looked like this album cover while I was listening.

As usual, this list is teaching me that I don't *love* David Bowie. I love the title track on this album, "Heroes" is honestly one of my favorite songs ever. Cheesy as it may be, I first heard it in that cathartic scene in Perks of Being a Wallflower. Basically a child's way of being introduced to it, but I don't care because it struck me immediately and I've played it incessantly since. I was hoping this album would have a lot like that, but there's not much else with that level of emotion and unforgettable melody. There's some sauce in that track that is impossible to replicate. Like "Low," I found myself enjoying the instrumental tracks on here more than those with Bowie on vocals. I don't know what to say, a lot of his stuff just feels generic-rocky. But there's enough on here for me that I'd say this is a great album. Hard to say which I've liked the most now, but the strength of "Heroes" elevates this one a lot. Favorite tracks: Heroes, Moss Garden, Sense of Doubt, Neukoln, Blackout. Album art: Quirky lad behavior. Bowie mid-voguing or something, I don't know. Not very heroic, but it's a cool shot. 4/5

Middling bowie - cull the number of albums he has on this list to his best stuff and remove the crap to make room for more artists.

David Bowie was a master of making one or two accessible songs per album to be smash hit singles and then being fully on his weirdo Goblin Mode Shit for the rest of the album. I respect it immensely but I didn’t particularly vibe with it on this one.

Great first half, but I'm not a fan of the instrumentals on side B.

The production values here are so high. It’s so slick. It slithers through you and is lead by one of Bowies most iconic tracks. A masterpiece from a true musical genius. If you’ve never heard it you need to.

Heroes is spacey, unapologetically weird, with chords of vague menace and sly humor-and a treat all the way through. The title track remains one of Bowie and Eno’s towering accomplishments, building to a throbbing emotional climax.

Surprisingly bad for bowie, Heroes the single is great but on the whole not too special

Kicks off with a glory tune that makes me hyperventilate. Nothing needs to be said about the tune Heroes. Instrumental tunes a higher level than other instrumental tunes. V2 Schneider is listenable on repeat, and Sense of Doubt makes me feel like I'm in the corner of a dark room with Jeffrey Dahmer. Moss Garden somehow sounds like being sat in Magna, space, the sea, the jungle and Japan all in a single song. Secrets of Arabia's funky bassline is an underrated surprise. Blackout and Neukoln are the only two which don't sound unique, but Brian Eno still powers through like a sausage powers through a hot dog bun. An album best listened to with undivided attention. 4.5

I did not expect half of this album to be instrumental, but it was nice to hear after a long night of work. It was alright overall, but it was nothing to write home about. Favorite tracks were Track 3: Heroes and Track 10: The Secret Life of Arabia.

This album is kinda weird, but I like it. It feels very dramatic, like I'm in a theatre watching a play about Grease. It's got some pretty defined hits and missed for me, though. Some songs are great and immerse me in a greaser feel, while others feel like I'm watching a play with great actors but poor story. The second half of the album is ambiance and backing music. That's really where it lost me. I thought it was gonna be more rock, but instead I got ambiance. It ends with one final banger rock song, but I can't get over the second half. Favorite track: The Secret Life of Arabia

Like a friend in my group said, I was not expecting this to be half instrumental. They were nice ambience, but I don't really care for it. This is a pretty good Bowie album, but it's really not my favorite and I think it's fine. Highlights: 1, and 3.

The first Aly Alf of this album was cool. Lots of innovative sounds for the time. I’ve never been a Bowie fan because I think his voice is uninspiring and boring. I could look past that personal bias, but I cannot look past the boring slow burn that is the second half of this album; especially all of the instrumentals. This album is awesome. Yes, the weird ambient songs in the middle kind of lag, but this album has Heroes on it, which is potentially the best song of all time, so it's a 5.

The title track of this album is the song I listened to over and over when I first heard that David Bowie died. An awful day for the world. But yes, while it may not be his greatest ever, it’s still excellent piece of work from David. Definitely an album you have to listen to in one go to fully appreciate.

I loved the instrumental tracks Moss Garden and Neuköln in the second half of the album. Really found myself hopping along to Heroes. The rest of the album was just okay.

I've always been a big Bowie fan. But this isn't one of his better albums. Aside from Heroes, the side one songs sound very disjointed and amateurish. The side two experimental ambient songs were more enjoyable. But that's not what I want to hear from Bowie. If I want ambient, there is an unlimited supply of better quality songs on iTunes. Sometimes great artists get a pass for their misses. But not today, David. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - I enjoyed listening to it but wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.

Not my favourite Bowie album (Bowie albums I love more: Low, Young Americans, Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Station, Aladdin) though it indisputably contains one of if not his greatest ever songs. In terms of the Bowie albums with two halves of pop songs and instrumentals, Low is lightyears apart for me on both fronts. That said, it's a peak Bowie album, and is spectacular in its own right. I just have to leave myself somewhere to go. Favourites - Heroes, Neukoln, V-2 Schneider.

Good but not total bowie

Heroes is the first Bowie song I fell in love with and for that this this album will always have a special place. The first half is an absolute masterpiece but unfortunately, I don’t love the second half quite as much.

This instantly clicked for me. Contains the iconic song Heroes, as well as other standouts such as Beauty and The Beast, Blackout and Joe The Lion. I don't often listen to instrumental tracks, but I was able to immerse myself with the four ones present on this album (V-2 Schneider, Sense of Doubt, Moss Garden and Neuköln). They transition very nicely into one another and offer a unique ambient journey for the listener.

As much as I like Bowie, I can't say I like this album. Most of it sounds too much like noise to me, and there's a definitive lack of hits (Heroes is the only familiar track). I do admire the Brian Eno (?) inspired tracks, Moss Garden and Neukuln, for their interesting sound. But that's it. Not everything made by Bowie is gold, and that's perfectly fine.

There's some quite engaging and upbeat tracks in here, compared to some of this other stuff. The musical tracks feel pretentious and I'm not into them.

"Heroes" gets downright funky, to my inebriated delight. The less poppy sections are less well-developed, but I'm actually happy to see flaws in this case, the Trilogy reacting to form a compound of perfectly imperfect Bowie weirdness. This remains the easiest Bowie project to be fooled by with the title track. Anyway, "Heroes": glorious.

I can't believe I've never listened to this full album before. I think I preferred Low, which despite its enormous variety, felt a little more cohesive and inventive. The front half is a collection of solid pop rock tunes that sees Bowie sending his voices to all corners of his range, while the back half slides in and out of instrumental trances before crashing back into consciousness with the shockingly corny 'Secret Life of Arabia'. There are classics to find here, but as a whole it didn't really work for me.

Sense of doubt is very dumb, though sycophants will try and tell me otherwise ("wow what a genuine artist!"). Stole someone's koto for moss garden. 2nd half barely any talking...I mean singing. Fripp not used enough to cancel out the eno influence.

Second album by David Bowie on this list and also second of the, so-called "Berlin Trilogy", after "Low". And while I think that "Low" was one of the best records I have listened to, out of almost 150 albums, "Heroes" was quite underwhelming and didn't offer the same mix of emotions. The concept of the record is similar - few positive and high energy songs, followed by more atmospheric and electronic-filled tracks. But last time we had many hits, songs that are great on their own, plus sounded great in the context of album. Here I can point out only the self-titled track "Heroes", which is a great single and somehow continues the road of the album trilogy. This time the instrumental songs didn't hook me in, they felt like a slog, even though there were nice moments with small guitar solos and melodies. Bowie's vocal is great as always, so no complaints there. Some people treat it as the best album in Bowie's career, for me it's a step back after wonderful "Low".

Bowie is an unparalleled talent. This was a great listen. I enjoyed the instrumental tracks A LOT! I also enjoyed V-2 Schneider. My fav was probably Jon the Lion.

Of course we're all familiar with Bowie, but there are only a small handful of records that I am intimately familiar with and "Heroes" isn't one of them. This album is big and ambitious, late 70s Bowie was really something. I find it a bit disjointed, but feel less so about that the more I listen to it. It's a really great album.

this bowie character is kind of a freaky weirdo you guys heroes/the berlin trilogy is in kind of a weird spot in the bowie cannon. it's post-ziggy, pre-let's dance, in an era where bowie was working to shake off that los angeles influence and do something less for listeners and more for him. it is decidedly devoid of songs like young americans and diamond dogs. this album is a reflection of that. it's weird and chaotic while you listen but has a sort of peace in its lack of commercialism. the song heroes has become commercially anthemic thanks to that movie with the flowers on the wall, but this album in general has a sort of intentional inaccessibility that i really dig. the song heroes also makes me cry pretty instantly upon listening. i have always always wanted to perform that song for an audience, but hold an internal fear that i would totally butcher it. it's so moving and emotionally raw, it's no wonder that everyone who hears it in adolescence has it stick with them for life. "yes, we're lovers, and that is a fact. yes, we're lovers, and that is that." come on man. so simplistically beautiful. shoutout the guys from king crimson, fripp and belew, for playing guitar on this album too. they really make heroes a complete and perfect track. brian eno's influence is also undoubtedly felt on this album, as well as its berlin trilogy partners. it's really interesting that bowie decided to pull from an area as desolate and difficult as west berlin in the 70s. that's wild and very thoughtful in a very bowie way. this is art rock perfection, and i love it, and the rest of the berlin trilogy. bowie will always and forever be a favorite of mine, because he is a cool genius and writes raw shit like this

Perfection

As cliché as it sounds, everything he touches turn to gold. The charismatic and glamorous personality is more evident here than on "Young Americans". Whether it's good old rock, or Brian Eno's ambience and slick electronica, or even that weird oriental rock tune, it's packed with such tight stellar-ness that I enjoyed a lot. Quite ahead of its time for a 1977 album.

Copy and paste. Heroes is more proof Bowie has some great singles but not many great albums. The title track is iconic. The rest is average. 2/5 on balance.

Again, I really struggle with Bowie albums. This is really experimental, a bit odd, and nothing about it really grabs me, other than the title track. I read that he put out 11 albums in the seventies and, based on the handful that we've had, I think he would've been better working a bit harder on 6... There's clearly shedloads of creativity and innovation here, just needs a bit more of a filter because a lot of this stuff really doesn't work. Still a Bowie singles fan, but we haven't yet had an album that I think is really good. 2/5.

David Bowie is so awesome dude. The first four songs of this album are just unbelievably good. Of course everyone knows 'Heroes', the first track 'Beauty and the Beast' is a very strong album opener. But for me, my favorite song is 'Sons of the Silent Age'. Just a magnificent melody and one of the best chord progression harmony combinations I've ever heard. The second half of the album is a lot different as Bowie transitions the album into a medley of instrumentals. I feel this half of the album is not nearly as strong but a special shout out to 'Moss Garden' as one of the most chill tracks I've heard. The album concludes with 'The Secret Life of Arabia' which brings back vocals and is a fine ending. I recommend this album, if only for the first half, it is worth it. 4.25/5

An absolute masterpiece. If this book was 5 Albums… “Heroes” should still be in it. Everything from the title track to the more experimental Kosmische tracks stand out as great work.

Proper relic of its time where tracks were intended to be listened to in order. Side 2 sort of slides off its chair with little instrumental vignettes and minimal, ambient atmospheric codas presumably to be enjoyed when whacked out on smack in a Berlin basement. Very good.

An album that’s more a snapshot of a time and place than being packed full of hits, except that it’s got one the greatest songs of all time on it. I love the whole atmosphere & soundscape that Eno, Visconti and Bowie created over the three Berlin albums. Going cold turkey on the coke and booze really did the trick. He made this and Low in the same year…

Having only ever heard the Heroes single, the whole album is not what I expected at all. 'Sense of Doubt' and 'Moss Garden' are so different to the Bowie I knew.

Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust are two of my favourite albums of all time. Always assumed I’d love this album too but it was just so dull. Heroes is obviously a classic but nothing else came remotely close to the title track.

Nothing particularly memorable, kind of boring all the way through.

A proper successor to Low, except louder and catchier with a greater R&B and gospel influence. It's much more refined and confident, and the songs are fantastic: energetic, cold, and industrial with a strained voice filter. Excellent synth work by Eno, distinctive and on point with Bowie's style. First half is nearly perfect, although I had a couple complaints about "Joe the Lion" and "Sons of the Silent Age" (love the Beatlesesque vocals and cymbal crashes). Just like with Low, the second half is characterized by mostly instrumentals, but the ambient tracks don't match the energy and stick out poorly, especially coming back to the disco "Secret Life of Arabia." My favorite was the Blackstar-esque horns in "Neukoln", but yeah they didn't impress me as much as the Low instrumentals.

10/10 I don’t know if I’m doing something wrong going through Bowie’s discography non-chronologically I just listen the way the website has me listen but seriously, it’s all amazing I truly love every album I’ve heard from him, it’s all so good and it’s kinda cool hearing it out of order jumping form older music to newer music anyway, yeah, Bowie’s great can’t wait to hear more!

First review and listen to a full David Bowie album.Now as previously mentioned i am not much of a reviewer for albums so bear with me on that part.Previously i have listened to a few songs by Bowie with Heroes being one of them but never have gotten around to listen to a full length album of his. The album starts off strong with Beauty and the Beat down to Sons of the Silent Age. Tracks such as V-2 Schneider weren’t appealing to me so maybe a re listen could bring me around. the next two instrumental tracks, Sense of Doubt and Moss Garden change the style of the album with Moss Garden having a more tranquil feel to the album. Then tying into the next track Neuköln with has some solid guitar playing mixed with a futuristic background which i really enjoyed. The final track of this album, The Secret Life of Arabia, really changes the mood from the last three tracks with Bowie singing on the track and giving a catchy chorus. Overall i really enjoyed listening to this album and makes me want to explore Bowie more with other well known albums such as ZiggyStardust. 4/5

FINALLY I get a Bowie album I can get down to. I love both the funky, proto-New Wave stuff on side 1 and the Blade Runner soundtrack on side 2.

I was familiar with the song "Heroes" before this, but the rest of the album was new to me. The instrumental tracks are what really grabbed my attention. Despite preceding the movie by a good five years, "Sense of Doubt" wouldn't feel out of place on the "Blade Runner" soundtrack, and "Neuköln" is equally moody and dark. Sandwiched between them is "Moss Garden," which has an ambient, meditative vibe to it (reinforced by Bowie's use of the koto). Interestingly, the track begins and ends with what sounds to my ears like rocket engines. Apparently the track "V-2 Schneider" is about Kraftwork's co-founder, but surely it's not a coincidence that the V-2 rocket was the first ballistic missile. It's almost as if the "Moss Garden" is a tranquil getaway from the dystopian locations the surrounding tracks represent. You hop on a rocket, get a little peace in the moss garden, then it's back on the rocket to return to the hellscape from whence you came. As for the rest of the album, there's artistry there (as one would expect from Bowie), but I don't see myself listening to anything other than "Heroes" with any kind of regularity.

One of the best listening experiences is starting with Bowie's Station to Station and ending with Heroes. Yes, I know the Berlin trilogy includes Lodger, but I find the others far superior. Bowie is one of my musical heroes, and I have Nine Inch Nails/Trent Teznor to thank for that. Heroes is one of those albums many acclaimed artists drew inspiration from - no wonder. It's fucking fantastic with a dash of experimental weirdness. Heroes is one of those songs that if I let it, will drift me to another emotional space. I've also heard it covered live covered by my favorite bands, and it's always a visceral experience. This is one of the greatest albums every recorded. Everyone should listen to this era of Bowie.

From hopeful lovers up against the wall to denizens of a bygone film era, leading us down the road of Krautrock inspired instrumentals that forecasted the ambient wave that would soon come, there's a reason why "Heroes" remains amongst Bowie's absolute greatest efforts. Love Brian Eno as a producer of ambient, less so for pop music. Bowie is doing his thing and I feel the ambient side comes out the better here. Of traditional Bowie songs Heroes is of course a classic and really saves Side-A for me. Patchy but the highs are very high - 3.5/5

Really enjoyed a few songs I’ve never heard before. Album gets weird in a few places, Bowie style. Couple songs could easily be used as backdrop in Stranger Things. Not an album I’d return to in it’s entirety, but will revisit some songs.

A few great songs, wasn’t a fan of the long instrumental break, found it boring frankly.

This album starts with 2 songs that are fast and can dance to them, then "Heroes" starts and give some peace to the album however it finishes with a lot of energy and the next song starts the same, the following songs are strange and give you the sensation of being somewhere you don't know but you miss, "neuköln" finishes this trip following the sensation of the previous songs but finishes like a nightmare that wasn't scary, just a nightmare. The last song it's just there to finish the trip with a sensation of loss of memory after the trip. This album starts like almost any other song of Bowie, however I didn't expect the end of the album.

I was never a big Bowie fan. I'm still not. He's weird in a cool way, and he definitely took a more artsy approach to composing, recording, and performing this music. I appreciate it, but I just can't bring myself to enjoy it.

Highlights: Beauty and the Beast.

I do love hearing these albums where you can feel the clear difference between the two sides of the vinyl. I've said this before about Bowie, that in my youth I just didn't "get" him, but I'm glad I'm making up for lost time now. The first half of this is all out classic stomping Bowie. Then you get a taste of weird soundscape Bowie, before wrapping it up with a cracking track that brings them both together. That's great.

I love the song Heroes but some of the other songs on this album were not fun to listen to

Favourite Bowie album for me. His voice never sounded better than on here. Eno, Fripp and Alomar all amazing of course, but mustn’t forget George Murray and Dennis David because the rhythm section is UNBELIEVABLE. Especially on Blackout. Stunning album. 1 star.

Heroes is the 12th album by David Bowie and its an experimental art rock album. It expanded on the electronic, ambient sounds introduced on his previous album Low, and followed a similar structure as well of more traditional rock songs on the first half and the second half featuring mostly instrumental tracks. This album signified a period of growth for Bowie as a musician, but the reviews for Heroes were mixed. Some liked the continuation of ambient art rock, while others would've liked more traditional rock elements to have been used. Everyone agrees that the guitar work - performed by Robert Fripp - was top notch though. Additionally the title track has gone on to be one of Bowie's most popular songs. I think it was a beautiful album that showcased Bowie trying out new things and still being able to make something most people would love.

First few tracks: Very complex music, amazing musical talent on display, would no doubt reward listening many times over. But apart from the title track, not enough hooks to make me want to. V2 Schneider reminded me of Kraftwerk - intentionally, I discovered later - but with a full band. Quite enjoyed that. Sense of Doubt & following instrumental tracks felt like an entirely different album

This album was released in October 1977. The title track was impossible to dislike and has over time become one of Bowie’s most popular songs. It’s one of 4 tracks on the album co-written with Eno & features Fripp on guitar. Six tracks feature vocals and four (most of Side 2) are instrumentals. For me, “Heroes”, Beauty And The Beast and Blackout are the standouts. These 3 & Sense of Doubt are the 4 tracks from this album included on the live double album Stage, which was released in September 1978 to coincide with Bowie’s 9 month world tour. I saw his first Sydney concert at the old Showground in November. He was in great voice. It was the music event of the year & felt a bit like the gathering of the tribes. This isn’t an album I’ve ever played a lot and having given it several spins in the last few days, I don’t know why. The production (Bowie & Visconti) is terrific. And it ‘s never boring - even the 4 consecutive instrumentals are full of surprises. I loved it.

I really love the Berlin-era Bowie albums, with their mix of krautrock, ambiance, new wave. Aspects of these records have inspired whole genres of subsequent music. I love the 'proper' songs on the first side (plus Secret Life of Arabia), all of which have Bowie in great voice. An old friend, Dave Chisholm, was a big fan of this ear of Bowie, and used to play this record obsessively. Joe the Lion was a particular favourite in that house. Is it sacrilegious to say that the instrumental tracks on side two are... a little weak? They feel like filler on a very quickly recorded album during a prolific period? While undoubtedly ground-breaking at the time, others have much more successfully followed the ambient/post-rock genre into much more itneresting places. These are ur-texts, but sktech-luike compared to what follows. Bowie has (successfully) distanced himself from his LA-based cocaine habit by re-locating the Europe, and in 1978 alone the had released 'Low', produced an album for Iggy ('The Idiot', also a classic), toured that record, recorded and released 'Heroes', then went back on tour again. Eno's influence is strongly seen on those instrumentals, plus the more experimental production choices, often as a result of using his Oblique Strategies cards. Robert Fripp, guitarist extraordinaire (who turned up for duty, claiming that he hadn't played in three years) played all his parts in three days, on songs he had never heard before. His distinctive playing is especially notable on the title track. I think he is the secret weapon that really lifts this album into something special. I am big fan of his work on 'Scary Monsters', which also shows how well his style suits Bowie's vocals and song-writing. I love and regularly play this album, although I confess I usually only play side 1.

Bowie a legend

The title track sure has legs. Too bad one can't say the same for the instrumental tracks that conclude the album. My hot take is that "Let's Dance" is a better Bowie album and this one is only here because of that aforementioned title track. But this is the album that finally made me Google "Did David Bowie really have different colored eyes". There appears to be some sort of consensus that Bowie had something called anisocoria, which means he didn't have different colored eyes, but instead had different sized pupils. You can clearly see that here on the album cover, but that doesn't mean Bowie didn't also have different colored eyes. It certainly seems like an idea he'd embrace to the point that it wouldn't have surprised me to learn he went out of his way to wear different colored contact lenses. That doesn't make Bowie a hero as much as it just adds to his continuous mystique.

Heroes is good, the rest of the album is fine.

I think I expected more from a classic Bowie album where the vibe was too slow for me and the only songs I really enjoyed were the two singles I already knew. Album was forgettable to me.

I had such a good time with this album. I like how it goes from Bowie glam soul to Brian Eno soundscapes. I’m not surprised this album was recorded after Bowie’s work on Lust For Life, as it has a very similar sound (though much more Bowie). This album starts and ends with a bang and even when it “slows down” it never diminishes in intrigue and excitement. Never expected Heroes to be a 5/5 Bowie album for me, but I really enjoyed this listen!

I suppose this is where you find out if you're really a Bowie fan or not. Having quite enjoyed Hunky Dory, I really struggled with this one. This may be a case where I should have read about the album and how it was made and presented before I just put it on. For example, I just wondered what the hell happened to the songs halfway through, instead of expecting a transition to 17 minutes of atmospheres. It might have made more sense listening on an LP when flipping to Side 2 made it sound quite different than Side 1. And as I felt that many of the vocal songs sounded like they were made up at the microphone, I didn't know that was as intended. I liked "Beauty and the Beast" right away, and "Heroes" is a deserved classic, but I didn't connect with much else. However, I think it's just an album that one doesn't put on casually and that I might find something more in it at another time.

Before this, Let’s Dance and Black Star were the only David Bowie albums I had ever listened to. They are really different albums from each other. They speak to remarkable breadth of his talent. Between those and my knowledge of his career-defining hits, I figured I knew what David Bowie was all about. Side one of Heroes impressed me with the energy of songs. They are wild and a lot of fun. Great Bowie tracks that easily surpassed my high expectations. And then I got to side 2… What a revelation! Most of side two are instrumentals that I had no idea was a part of David Bowie’s history. Wonderful electronic instruments, horns, and the band feels like Bowie in a way I never imagined. I feel like I’ve stumbled on a secret room in my home filled with hidden wonders. I’m invigorated at how Heroes has delivered an entirely unexpected and wonderful experience yet again expanding my already expansive view of what David Bowie is as an artist.

An all-time classic, peak Bowie. It still sounds like the future to me. The orientalism of "The Secret Life of Arabia" is really the only miss here.

I give this a five star rating. Mainly out of fear that if I give it any less a time traveling version of myself will punch me in the gut.

decent but nothing exceptional. “heroes” obviously great but the rest kinda meh. instrumentals on side two are interesting but go on too long without any real purpose
