Too much filler!
The second half of this one was a bit strange, but Bowie doing strange is not out of the realm of what Bowie does. Strangely enough, I still liked it.
Great classic album. Bowie just isn't my thing.
Great album, but far from his best. 3 stars but only within the context of the rest of his work.
This album starts so strong, but then kinda fades away. Don’t get more wrong it’s a really good album, and should be on this list. But because it’s Bowie and he has so many albums on the list, I’m rating this harder than it should. So just misses out on the 4 stars due to it being lower down my Bowie favourite album list, which automatically makes it overrated.
Not my favorite Bowie album, but title track is great.
Oddly enough one of the few Bowie albums I never listened to earlier... The minimal songs of 2nd part are very different, Eno&Fripp&Bowie dream trio, and the title song is one of his anthems. Still not convinced. Nothing beats Blackstar and Earthling.
Cat: never dug into Bowie. I know and like what I know and like. This album is great! It’s groovy and funky and rocking. Could do without the weird noise track. Cried during Heroes. AJ: Same for the first two points, for sure. Album is pretty cool. He likes Pink Floyd and did some of their tricks in the middle no words zone. Pretty cool. Last track about Arabia is a jam, with stupid stupid words. But I like it. It’s got Bayliss claps. Getting a 3 on Heroes alone.
That was one of the David Bowtie albums.
Two listens today. Side A was very good. Side B was weird. I like Bowie, and I appreciate his influence , but I don’t love listening to his albums. I get it, I just don’t “get” it.
Bowie’s Heroes has some incredible moments and stand out tracks but the sonic experimentation doesn’t quite land and Bowie’s songwriting feels a little uninspired at times. This from a Bowie fan - favourite artist according to this project - but not a favourite album.
Okay songs, I actually thought the instrumental tracks were the best
Not his greatest album, but interestingly enough I really liked the instrumental songs at the end.
I’ve never been a huge Bowie fan. Heroes is a jam but the rest of the songs aren’t spectacular.
Heroes is the biggest gem on the album
Great first half, then middling 2nd. Though “Arabia” is a jam
This was good, but also weird.
Could never really get into Bowie in my younger days, but I really enjoyed Low when I discovered it a couple years back, and I enjoyed Blackstar after hearing it on this list. Was looking forward to this reading it was the follow up to Low, and in the same vein, but can't help but feeling disappointed it didn't live up to expectation. Thought the instrumental tracks were fairly average, and other than Heroes the rest of the lyrical ones were fairly non gripping. Not a bad album, but not a great one.
3.5
Another ok album. Bowie’s compositions fail to connect with me. Took two listens and felt like I didn’t dislike either listen, but didn’t love it either.
Not a fan of Bowie it seems
i didn't like the only instrumental songs, but the rest were great
Not a huge David Bowie fan.....The song Heroes, is a classic though.
This was an okay Bowie album which is still significantly better than most albums on this list. The first half was pretty solid. The second half however got a bit odd and very instrumental based. I’d say that the Berlin trilogy is not my favorite style of Bowie records but this was okay. The instrumentals had a real sense of dread and spacey sound to them. Slight replay value here. 6.3/10
I assume bens review will be similar here but Heroes the song is very meta. rest of the album doesn’t bring too much to the table
Up to half way I thought this was a big stomp and the more accessible younger twin brother to Low. However, the ambient suite that comprises Side 2 blew that out of the water. It of course sounds very Berlin, as Bowie defined that sound with this and the preceding two albums. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Heroes Date listened: 04/06/23
fav: The Secret Life of Arabia
My least favorite Bowie album, but that’s a high mark to hit The title track is one of his biggest hits. I liked the instrumentals better than the the rest of the album
I don’t know enough about Bowies early work to respect the transition of his music. Didn’t care for any of the rock songs besides the title track. Having instrumental B sides is a cool idea. Rating: 2.7
I absolutely love the story of how this album came to be and am enchanted by Bowie’s lyric writing process (writing at the mic does something to me spiritually, emotionally, sexually, idfk). Beauty and the Beast: Crazy that this came out before Beauty and the Beast did. Enjoyable listening. Joe the Lion Repeat ad inf. Heroes: Written by the Berlin Wall? Lyrics written while everyone else went on a walk? Why are we mentioning dolphins? Hell if I know; I’m having the time of my life. Sons of the Silent Age: It’s fine. Listen, they’re all good. It was a good album.
Unfortunately I don't currently have time to write a thorough review, but here are my general thoughts on the album. I am not crazy about most of the music. I appreciate the broad range of influences Bowie brings in, and the variety on the album, but I didn't enjoy it much. It seems a bit ahead of it's time in that I would have guessed it came from the mid 80's, but I do not know how much of this was innovation vs imitation. I like Bowies voice, I hear things that come up in future artists that I like so I'm guessing this was an important album, just didn't like it that much myself. I'm gonna have to go with a 3 on this one.
- Heroes is a 10/10 song but the rest of the album doesn't really do it for me - Last song was pretty hype, and I liked the different sounding instrumental tracks that preceded it - 2.5 but I'll round up cuz of Heroes
- Woah just realizing now that Bowie has such a huge influence on Josh Homme - Some really catchy beats - Really just ditched the vocals in the second half
not much of a fan of this older stuff (circa. 1990), but heroes (botht the song and album) are very good! surprised me slightly, but a solid 4!
I thought it was cool how there's just an ambient song cycle for 3 songs near the end there. Heroes and blackout are bangers. the rest I didn't find especially great
I enjoy listening to David Bowie now and again. I haven't heard this album in it's entirety before. I like some of his albums, I don't like some, Heroes falls somewhere in the middle for me. I do feel that side two is much more engaging overall.
Interesting album. Some classic Bowie. Transitioning from Aladdin Sane to something much more musically complex. The moody avant garde tracks come out of nowhere and pull the album into a weird direction. Thought Spotify had shit the bed for a second. They would make more sense when they kicked off side B of the vinyl.
Not my usual cup of tea
Whilst still defying genres in a way only he could, ”Heroes” is still an album that notes Bowie past his peak. The title-track ”Heroes” is however one of Bowie’s greatest works. Instantly captivating with its haunting melodies and emotionally charged lyrics. Bowie's vocals soar with a sense of longing and defiance. The song's powerful message of love and courage echoes out and it’s very hard to not appreciate this song. Throughout the album Bowie blends elements of rock, pop, and avant-garde music to create an accessible and classic sound. Brian Eno's influence is evident throughout the album, as he brings his experimental and ambient sensibilities to the table. The layered instrumentation and innovative use of synthesizers create a rich and immersive sound that bring an almost futuristic vibe. It’s a bold statement in Bowie’s career but the spark from the early 70s is not quite there.
A higher point in the Bowie backlog that straddles the singers’ excesses quite well. Dripping in production, there’s still a sense of the stripped-back human element Bowie excels at present even with synths and guitars blaring at full volume. The back half does peter out fairly quickly, but the excitement of the first is more than enough to sustain a whole listen.
I see this adheres to Low’s ‘bangers up front, weird instrumentals at the end’ approach, but I think Low probably did both facets more successfully, and first. I still enjoyed it, but it’s not one of Bowie’s best. It feels like it’s made the list on the strength of the title track alone.
This was a 4 without brian eno heroes
all the non-instrumentals are really good, but it's definitely brought down for me by the instrumentals, which are a big nothing-burger for me. 3/5
Pretty surprised by the instrumentals at the end, and then the disco finale. Bowie is always surprising! Loved the first and last tracks. Liked but didn’t love everything in the middle.
A little deliciously weird, but also a little boring… don’t kill me. Wallflowers version of Heroes took a very excellently-written song and executed it much better… don’t kill me.
Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yes! It’s so beautiful and almost hugs you tight which isn’t something you experience much Favourite song: Track 3 - Heroes
Not for me
I expected more from this. Didn't care for the first two songs or the instrumentals.
Even more experimental and weird than I'd thought. 3
It was a decent album. I enjoyed it for the most part. It was better than a 3 but not really a 4.
Some solid songs in the mix, but the instrumental third of the album is mostly bad. Why is that even there? Interesting music that's not that enjoyable to listen to. 3.5/5
Heroes saved it from a 2
I love David Bowie, but I have to admit I don't care for much of this album. The title track is the only one I actually recognize and I think there's a reason for that. The rest of it is kind of jangly and disjointed, probably like the rest of his life at that time. Still, 3 stars because Bowie and one very good song.
Not really my thing, few good songs though
The first have is pretty solid...surprised on how bleh the rest is. Just ok. 2.5/5
good bowie
Ok album with some good songs
I am about 150 albums behind the pack, being a late joiner, so I an working on my backlog. Time for Bowie! (hard to rate important, hisotorical albums - they are so important, but i just bagged Revolver, so ...). but here is my reaction. I dont like each track, but then Heroes, the song, is so soaring, moving, and lyrically interesting, ambitious and has the best of his Berlin period in it. I enjoy his yelling of the chorus, unbridged almost pleeding. this is the song. I'd like to find the trilingual single disc for this one day. Songs of the silent age returns to familair style. then the B side atmoshperics are interesting and totally unfmailair for me... Bowie is demanding. not going to gush about hsi as an album, but interesting symth expeirments on side B. I were an older man, I might have had blues, funk, jazz, Stones, Bowie, Cohen, (but probably not Beetles, Folk or much other rock...). I like the last track, the Secret Life of Arabai, and the Moss Garden was a surpise... NB: the track played next by the YT ALGO: "more than this" by Roxy Music. the algo knows me...
3,5
This wouldn't be my top Bowie album. As I've mentioned as far back as the first album we ever did, I'm not a HUGE Bowie fan. Some of his songs are amazing but his overall library has never captured me. And this is a good example album. I enjoyed some of the songs, and I've heard Heros before as a cover (which I liked better). Some of these were strange, but it wasn't a bad thing. Just didn't leave any impression with me. I looked like this album cover while I was listening.
Heroes is a good song. Rest is average Bowie. I’m not much of a fan… Rounding up!
David Bowie was a master of making one or two accessible songs per album to be smash hit singles and then being fully on his weirdo Goblin Mode Shit for the rest of the album. I respect it immensely but I didn’t particularly vibe with it on this one.
Great first half, but I'm not a fan of the instrumentals on side B.
music was good loved the ambient tracks the ones with singing less sons of the silent age secret life of arabia and heroes were a bit too slow for my taste
Surprisingly bad for bowie, Heroes the single is great but on the whole not too special
Get me out of this 70s time loop
Kind of washed over me Good production, Heroes obviously a classic, the rest was good, but not amazing? Maybe I've just got very high expectations for Bowie.
jake sully fav tracks: Beauty and the Beast, Heroes, The Secret Life of Arabia
I did not expect half of this album to be instrumental, but it was nice to hear after a long night of work. It was alright overall, but it was nothing to write home about. Favorite tracks were Track 3: Heroes and Track 10: The Secret Life of Arabia.
This album is kinda weird, but I like it. It feels very dramatic, like I'm in a theatre watching a play about Grease. It's got some pretty defined hits and missed for me, though. Some songs are great and immerse me in a greaser feel, while others feel like I'm watching a play with great actors but poor story. The second half of the album is ambiance and backing music. That's really where it lost me. I thought it was gonna be more rock, but instead I got ambiance. It ends with one final banger rock song, but I can't get over the second half. Favorite track: The Secret Life of Arabia
Like a friend in my group said, I was not expecting this to be half instrumental. They were nice ambience, but I don't really care for it. This is a pretty good Bowie album, but it's really not my favorite and I think it's fine. Highlights: 1, and 3.
I loved the instrumental tracks Moss Garden and Neuköln in the second half of the album. Really found myself hopping along to Heroes. The rest of the album was just okay.
Pretty good!! but… Early 70s Bowie> Late 70s Bowie to me 3.5/5
I think this was great but I feel like Bowie's best is elsewhere
Good but not total bowie
Not my favorite David Bowie stuff the middle instrumental part was cool heroes is obviously great and sons of the silent age was prett good definitely ahead of it’s time as well
couple songs were decent, but then there were like 3 boring instrumentals
There's some quite engaging and upbeat tracks in here, compared to some of this other stuff. The musical tracks feel pretentious and I'm not into them.
I can't believe I've never listened to this full album before. I think I preferred Low, which despite its enormous variety, felt a little more cohesive and inventive. The front half is a collection of solid pop rock tunes that sees Bowie sending his voices to all corners of his range, while the back half slides in and out of instrumental trances before crashing back into consciousness with the shockingly corny 'Secret Life of Arabia'. There are classics to find here, but as a whole it didn't really work for me.
It's ok there's better Bowie out there. The side two Eno stuff is kind of weird and out there so there's that
Bowie is an unparalleled talent. This was a great listen. I enjoyed the instrumental tracks A LOT! I also enjoyed V-2 Schneider. My fav was probably Jon the Lion.
Good
Not my favorite Bowie album. The title song is good, but the rest doesn't really hit the maximum Bowie funky or psychedelic vibes for me
I love Bowie but his albums are a bit patchy.
Interesting album in that it turns from a pretty funky album to an instrumental in the second half. Almost like side B was a soundtrack.
It's the hit song Heroes... plus some other random songs. Later, the album gets into ambient instrumental territory.
There's a few classic moments on this but mostly this is not a patch on the Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie.
Interesting album, but don't think I'll listen to it again.
Love the title track and really enjoyed the second half soundscapes
Very spacey, good background music
Pretty good album, i loke david bowie
Apart from Low, I don't like the Berlin trilogy. Some good parts, but the dischordance grates on my nerves - like fingernails down a chalkboard.
I do love David Bowie. Some interesting instrumental songs towards the end.
Heroes the song is awesome but the album is tricky.
Swinging from classic Bowie songs to the soundtrack for a 70's sci-fi movie, this didn't really do it for me
Bit crazy, but mostly good songs
I enjoyed the songs with lyrics. Def not my fav Bowie album
I can't say that this is my favourite Bowie album unfortunately, and to me it all seemed a bit forgettable, which is something I absolutely hate to say about the legend that is Bowie, but yeah, I didn't find myself enjoying this one all that much. The ambient tracks near the end were strange but certainly interesting. Favourite: The Secret Life of Arabia
sons of silence wasn't too bad otherwise I'd be running for earbleach didn't finish, only got halfway through
Really enjoyed a few songs I’ve never heard before. Album gets weird in a few places, Bowie style. Couple songs could easily be used as backdrop in Stranger Things. Not an album I’d return to in it’s entirety, but will revisit some songs.
A few great songs, wasn’t a fan of the long instrumental break, found it boring frankly.
Mixed bag. Mostly pretty good.
Heroes is awesome. Some of the instrumentals in the back are very cool (Doubt/Moss Garden). However rest is pretty forgettable.
The best song - of couse - is Heroes, but the others are lacking. I somehow liked the instrumentals. 2.5/5
I was never a big Bowie fan. I'm still not. He's weird in a cool way, and he definitely took a more artsy approach to composing, recording, and performing this music. I appreciate it, but I just can't bring myself to enjoy it.
I love the song Heroes but some of the other songs on this album were not fun to listen to
It's alright. Heroes is the best. Some weird shit at the end again. Odd albums from Bowie
I know it's a classic, but unfortunately it's not quite my cup of tea...
First few tracks: Very complex music, amazing musical talent on display, would no doubt reward listening many times over. But apart from the title track, not enough hooks to make me want to. V2 Schneider reminded me of Kraftwerk - intentionally, I discovered later - but with a full band. Quite enjoyed that. Sense of Doubt & following instrumental tracks felt like an entirely different album
Heroes is good, the rest of the album is fine.
The first half of the album definitely connected with me more than the instrumentals in the second half.
Huh, weirdly disappointed with this, starts strong but last few tracks are just dull
The track Heroes is great, but the remaining songs are either atmospheric and just there, or a little strange without being catchy. Maybe I don’t get Bowie as much as I want to. Still interesting.
The first side of the album was your typical brilliant bowie. Very inventive, weird and creative music. The B-side was a big let down. Lots of boring instrumentals and nothing memorable
decent but nothing exceptional. “heroes” obviously great but the rest kinda meh. instrumentals on side two are interesting but go on too long without any real purpose
My first introduction to Bowie. Enjoyable. Very British, artsy.
Not my favorite Bowie album, but his music is always interesting and a good listen!
It was fine. Not as bad as some of the other Bowie albums. Still just don't understand the hype.
Didn't really find this album from Bowie particularly inspiring... it's one of those I wanted to like more than I actually did. Still, Heroes itself is a great song even if a little overplayed and for that this album gets a solid 3/5 from me
Started off strong. First few tracks were very groovy, layered, emotive. The back half of the album kind of killed the momentum that the first half had. The spacey soundscape tracks weren't bad in their own right, but they just went on for way too long. Definitely would be a 4 if the balance between conventional and instrumental tracks was a little better.
Was only ok for me
Hmmm... Not sure this was my favorite David Bowie. I enjoyed all the instrumental elements but that vocals were not there.
I've listened to enough David Bowie to know he'll never be my favourite artist, but I respect him. Hunky Dory is my favourite.
With a couple Bowies under my belt by this point, he’s kind of a mixed bag for me; there’s usually a couple songs per album I’ll like a lot, and the rest leaves me really cold. That said, I still haven’t heard anything from ziggy stardust era, so there might be missing context or something still.
David Bowie is a good compositor and a referent singer.
Honestly another mediocre Bowie album on this list. Might be one of the few people who absolutely detests the title track, the rest of the album is fairly boring. Should have been much more interesting having Robert Fripp onboard but it wasn't.
With the exceptions of the title track and the instrumental Moss Garden, the rest of the album doesn’t impress. Maybe it was exciting in 1977, but the music feels rather generic. In the other hand, Heroes is such a brilliant song, it bumps it up a star in my rating.
Really lost me with those last 3 or 4 instrumentals. The single is great and the first half the album is good.
Good to great first half, meh second half. I really liek Bowie but the more of his albums I listen to, the more I think I really like Greatest Hits Bowie.
Still not a huge Bowie fan. Entertaining enough.
Listened while riding bike so may not have got the full effect. But aside from the title track there seemed to be a lot of weird instrumental sound that didn’t do much for me.
I listened while on a run and although it was enjoyable to start, the group of instrumental songs toward the end were kind of a drag.
Not Bowie's best. I do enjoy the song Heroes a lot, and some of the instrumentals were kinda fun.
Not the best Bowie but still some great sounds
Another album I actually enjoyed more than I expected, or at least more than I expected to since the last time I listened to it. I actually enjoyed the second half of this one, surprisingly. Nice
The good stuff is incredible, the bad stuff towards the end is frustrating
a little too avant garde for my taste
Oh boy. Not a fan of David Bowie, was a hater a few years ago. Now, listening to this album it changed my outlook on him. I still think that his pop tunes are not that great, but on the second side of this album there are some great instrumental tracks. All in all, it's surprisingly an enjoyable listen. The second side really saves it for me tho. 3/5
The songs were okay but again, I am just not a big Bowie fan.
The title track is phenomenal, but I could live the rest of my life without hearing any of the other tracks and I'd be just fine. Huge Bowie fan too.
Not my favorite Bowie but still good.
Not as sold on the instrumental tracks, but Heroes is an anthem and there are some great Bowie tracks I hadn't properly listened to before
I liked the first half, but the second half kind of lost me.
One good song.
I can never seem to like an entire Bowie albums much as I would like to.
Bowie is great, but I don’t enjoy or get it all. I quite like side 1, but Blackout is a bit messy. I like Arabian (very Chic), but none of the instrumentals on side 2.
02/25/2022 He's a weirdo for sure, but how can you not love him?
A couple of great songs, but I've discovered I rarely like instrumentals. I've never taken to the Berlin trilogy and time hasn't changed my opinion.
I like Bowie's other stuff better x
The sanmisen in Moss Garden was a pleasant surprise...
Not as good as the other bowie album
It's not trippy prog-rock storyteller Bowie, and therefore it's not my favourite Bowie. All Bowie is decent Bowie though. ...Bowie.
I feel very much that I need to be listening to this on vinyl while high to fully appreciate this album. Heroes is best known but Sons of the Silent Age felt like classic Bowie to me. The discordant Sense of Doubt following the upbeat V-2 Schneider would just be cruel in that scenario though!
This is somewhere between a 2 and a 3, Heroes is objectively a great track but the rest is just kind of okay. I can't, in good conscience, give Bowie a 2 so it gets 3.
I love Bowie, and thought I loved this album. But other than Heroes, I thought the album was lacking...
Got quite excited seeing this album cover but to be completely honest, the only song on here I enjoyed was heroes. It's better than most of the 2s I've handed out here and worse than most of the 3s but just because of his legacy I'll have to round up. Not his best.
meeh
Mehr, heroes is a standout track
It’s Bowie, so I expect it to be a bit weird. Heroes is brilliant. Even when it gets a bit experimental, you kind of give him the benefit of the doubt of his artistry. I feel like there’s better Bowie to come, so as a newbie to his oeuvre I remain sway-able in either direction after this listening experience.
He has better albums than this. Was a little disappointed by it.
Solid, mutta myös paljon filleriä. Ei ihme että Heroes oli hitti.
Standouts - Heroes; Black Out; The Secret Life of Arabia My first time listening to this full album The second half was surprisingly instrumental and ambient I enjoyed it but probably not my favorite Bowie album as a whole (at least after the first listen)
I have to say that this album I did not like as much as the last bowie one. Not as memorable and there was not a song that stood out to me. Still had that classic sound of his but not my favorite.
2.5/5
Heroes but then kinda boring with everything else
Only heard the eponymous track before, liked the instrumentals but the vocals were a bit out there (as Bowie usually does). Solid
I massively respect everything he does, but this album was just a bit unorganized. Begins with classic Bowie style of rock and his definitive vocal display, but the sudden transition to ambience, while enjoyable, makes the album seem like it lost track of where it wanted to go and what it wanted to be. I cannot give it more than a 3, as it would be unfair to other 3s from unknown artists who wouldn’t get the brand bias.
Unfortunately below expectations, Heroes as a lead single isn't even that good, the rest of the songs fail to coming close to anything remarkable and the instrumental/ambience B Side was redundant
Normally a Bowie fan, but this one kind of missed for me. Side 1 was pretty good, then side 2 was flat. Maybe not in the mood for instrumentals today. Just a 3.
Gets weird at the end
Great Artist, not exactly what Id like.
It would be better if the style was more consistent throughout the album.
Interesting but not my type of music
Like it. Heroes is brilliant. Good album overall.
Nothing much caught my attention
Interesting album particularly liked the instrumentals towards the end. Wouldn't mind listening to again.
Meh
Maybe I was expecting too much, but this album was very middle-of-the-road for me. I felt ambivalent about nearly every track here, despite the fact that I could tell there was effort going into constructing this record.
It’s fine. The instrumentals are cool.
3 1/2
So the total track is one of his finest moments, otherwise I enjoyed the instrumentals and the second half of the album far more than the first half. Closing track is great too ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heroes is great, the rest somewhat less so
Yep. Fine. Move on.
3/5. Some bangers and some not. Overall started well but ended quite odd
Love the main song. Didn't like the other s
Listened 27/9/21
Sylt på burk
I love Bowie but this is not his finest hour. Cocaine and coffee might not always produce brilliance
Weird
Ustumuzdeki olu topragini attik diyebilirim
Liked the well known Bowie side A, less keen on the Eno side B.
Heroes Sounds of the Silent Age (towards the end) V-2 Schneider Moss garden (sounds peaceful) The Secret Life of Arabia ---------------------------------------------- Beauty and Beast Joe the Lion Blackout Sense of doubt - too chilling Neuköln
I have only heard Heroes before this. Not fond of the first few songs. Love Sense of Doubt, very ominous. Moss Garden too. Really love all the instrumental tracks. Conclusion: I might not be a fan of David Bowie's voice.
Heroes. 5 av 5. Så klart. Sons of the Silent Age rider vidare på Heroes-vågen, lite mer experimentellt, lite mer blås. Helt ok.
not the bowie album i would have picked but pretty solid i can see why the title track is the one that stands out for everyone but there were a couple others i thought were really good especially towards the front half kind of wish we had half stars but rounding down to a 3
I'd give it 3.5 stars. +1 in there for Heroes, and I liked the oppressive trance of Sense of Doubt + Moss Garden + Neukoln leading into upbeat exotic The Secret Life of Arabia. Overall, though, I was underwhelmed.
Title track easily the standout.
Starting off as a typical Bowie rock album, I did not expect the later instrumentals at all. The slow transition from rock to Japanese-influenced melodies was an amazing experience. Only downside is the songs are a bit stretched out and repetitive.
fine for in the background
Vocals are sex Atmospheric work is nice I've heard this is nowhere near his best so this is a 3 Why did he have to fuck 14 year olds he's so hot
Bowie's voice is certainly charming, but I didn't like the execution on several of the cuts on this project. I suspect his more popular records will be more appealing, and I'm sure we're gonna see a few of them at least so I'm looking forward to that. // Favs: Beauty And The Beast Score: Light 3
Hey, it's all good, but only one track really grabs me. The rest of it is top tier background at this point in my life.
Bowie trying something new. A bit off though. Not as strong as Changes
Yes, I'm very familiar with the title track, but everything else was new to me. "V-2 Schneider" is the track I'll most likely listen to again. "Sons of the Silent Age" was the only track that I was tempted to skip. Overall the album was good. One of the surprises for me was the number of instrumental tracks. Bowie’s voice is so recognizable, and it was surprising to hear that it was absent from a string of tracks. "Sense of Doubt", "Moss Garden", and "Neuköln" had a hint of progressive rock to them, while still sounding like they belonged on the same album as "Heroes". I might not listen to the whole album again, so I'll settle with 3 stars.
Interesting variety of styles.
It feels almost sacrilegious to admit, but I don’t think I've ever listened to a full Bowie album. Put him up there in TBTLT (Too Big To Listen To) with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones et al. There is clearly a lot to like. The title track is an all time great, and well worth the full length listen. I found it odd that for a man with so much to express, he gave over two and a half of ten to weird, kind of directionless atmospheric noodling. I did like Moss Garden, that said. I’m not convinced it was pulling its weight. All told, I liked it - plenty of pep, and clearly excellent songwriting chops. But I come away wanting more.
First 5 good, next 5 songs kind of experimental instrumentals which I'm not a huge fan of, but I did like Sense of Doubt out of them.
at risk of causing gammon nigel to boil himself for daring to diss a national treasure, i've always considered Duncan to be all about the singles and the albums full of filler. this does not change my opinion. strongest part of the album is the bits he didn't sing on. sounds like i don't like bowie but i don't have no beef with him.
BOMEGALULwie
Half of this album is brilliant
Far better than I expected, musically diverse and unpredictable.
Actually got something out of this album - some great tracks
An Album of 2 halves. Decent 1st half, nonsense 2nd.
Eclectic Bowie at his best. Some good tunes.
Not as good as the previous album ***
Getting slated by the others and some of it is pretty experimental but it’s fun and original and I like the fact that he doesn’t give a fuck
Nog een keer Bowie, niet slecht...
No wonder he called the album "Heroes", that's by far the best track. The health spa moments towards the end were unexpected but not unwelcomed. Overall not for me. 6/10
Definitely not his best work but for the most part I enjoyed it. Went a bit weird at the end, which wasn't really my vibe, but it didn't take away from the rest of the album.
3/5. Alright, not great. Never really been a fan of Bowie.
Decent album but not quite my style. I can see why people like it tho
Just like the other Bowie album. Some great songs but otherwise nothing astonishing.

M'agrada molt Bowie, malgrat que he escoltat pocs àlbums sencers seus.
Bowie brooded a wise hive of great albums, but overall this one didn’t grab me. Some great tracks
I liked the 1st half but the last 4 songs were all weird instrumentals. I wasn't a huge fan of those.
Love the "title" song, others are interesting but most don't grab me although quite dramatic and interesting instrumentals
David Bowie! A name even I know. But fame doesn’t save him from an honest review. As much as I liked some of the instrumental tracks on the second half, I loathed everything else on the album. I‘ll give him three stars, because I can see the potential, if only he would refrain from singing.
Hmm. Somehow never listened to this whole thing before and it seems like a lot of these tunes are a little, dare I say, forgettable? I liked “Sons of the Silent Age” and “V-2 (Paul) Schneider.”
I’d say they were all horsing the drugs on this one
Dope first half, too trippy later
I love Bowie but this is not my favorite of his offerings.
Okay outside of hits. Good instrumental songs
Since we just listened to Aladdin Sane, I find myself comparing the two albums, which is a random touchpoint, but in any case I liked AS better. This one was just not as compelling. The ambient tracks toward the end were interesting, but didn't feel cohesive with the rest of the album.
A couple of good, fun songs... lots of weirdness too
If I didn't just listen to Low it probably would have a four. Not bad, not great
Algumas musicas boas, bowie nao é meu forte
The first half of the album is amazing, but the ambient track is not my favourite part of Davie Bowie's career in music. If it was for the first half I would have said a decent 4:5
Heroes is good, the rest of the songs are kind of underwhelming
Oops didn’t really listen to this one. Three stars coz it’s David Bowie
This was more '80s than Bowie. some song sound like he's flirting with a space Odyssey, but some of them are the most annoying part of the '80s.
I like Bowie but not a massive fan. Heroes is an amazing tune. A few good other tracks but not wowed
Heroes is a great song but this is not in my top 5 Bowie albums. It is the first of the three Berlin albums I’ve listened too. Blackout is very good.
A much darker album than the others. Definitely worth a listen.
I listened to this one back when I had “Low” generated for me. Wonderful record
3/5. Bowie is great, but not something I'd listen to all the time.
Can't go wrong with Bowie, pretty much ever.
Pretty fun first half but not as good as some of his others.
not his strongest album in imo
Had some highlights.
Never been crazy about Bowie. Feels sacrilegious. Didn't expect half of this album to be instrumental. Seems a bit out-there at certain parts. "Heroes" is still a wonderfully classic track. Favorite tracks: "Heroes", "Blackout"
not my cup of tea but it was alright.
Another decent Bowie album! There are probably too many of his albums on this list now but they're not bad haha. 3/5.
This would be so much better without lyrics. The music is insanely good, but Bowie's lyrics and singing on this album do nothing for me. I'm just not a huge fan at all of this album. Maybe he was making too many in the 70s.
I had higher expectations. Far from his best.
It didn't have any day dreaming effects on me. Except maybe like Heroes the part where it goes "I can be King and you can be Queen" where the day dreaming kicked in but even then it was too short. And sometimes it just sounds like David Bowie throwing stuff at the wall. Heroes and Secret life of Arabia which the latter song reminded me of Stardust Crusaders in JJBA. Most of the songs where David Bowie isn't mixing things and gluing ideas together it sounds like a song for a JJBA leitmotif (particularly beauty and the beast & Joe the Lion)
Pretty weird 2nd half, definitely not my favorite Bowie
Don’t get the hype, a problem probably
saved: “Heroes” Moss Garden The Secret Life of Arabia
I do not think it’s not good but I don’t dig it as much as I’d like to
I was enjoying the first bit of this, some solid songs. I put it on the Bluetooth speaker as I worked on installing fountains into planters as a mini backyard pond project. Heroes came on, love that one, lightening up the toil of cleaning out sulfury pond muck from plants. Gradually, without me noticing, the music got eerie. Dark clouds rolled in and the wind roared through the trees around me. I looked down and noticed that the 3 minnows I’d put in one of the planters were floating at the top of the water, graveyard dead. By this time, I was in the middle of the haunting song “Neukoln” and scrambling to finish up my work because I was tired, frustrated, and kinda spooked. I think David Bowie would be pleased that this one freaked me out a bit.
The title track is great, the rest I wasn't such a fan of.
I guess he's ahead of the times with this album but I still don't enjoy it.
Oh Bowie. Not my favorite. Not at all. But this album… let’s see how I feel today… Oh no. Listened to this with my husband. He wanted to give it a 1. This only concretized what was honestly his hate going in. The first half, minus the very recognizable Heroes, is almost unlistenable. I have to admit. I tried twice. But… yeah it’s torture. And then the second half… well it’s relief? Love music where Bowie isn’t singing. But together the two halves are… what? Brilliant? No. I’m sorry all the brouhaha about Bowie, at least here, is… Sound and fury my friends. 2 Because the second half has some decent tracks. Boolean: FALSE- I in no way, on no day, needed to hear this before I die.
+ tsja Bowie, een hele plaat
It was alright
On paper I should love David Bowie and he seems like a great guy with about 5 good songs, the rest I reeeeeally don't like.
Efectivamente tenía razón, no me gustó.
Meh, it's interesting, but I wouldn't remember it or listen to it willingly.
I was basically bored through this whole album. I didn't hate it, but nothing in it was interesting.
Starts out OK then gets weird. BOOOO!!!
Beginning was fun and felt nostalgic. Instrumentals at the end of the album kinda lost me, though enjoyed the freaky vibe to them. 2.5/5
Just too experimental for me overall
I'm going to have to give this one another listen sometime. It was an odd album with some interesting vocals and lyrics. I enjoyed the purely instrumental tracks in the middle section of the album and "Heroes" is great, but some of the other songs put me off. Maybe I'll appreciate it more on the next go round.
Listening session: may 12th, while going for a walk Listened to before: heard one song before Thoughts: I’m not a Bowie fan, and while this album must’ve been ahead of its time, I did not enioy it. “Heroes” is a great song though Favourite tracks: “Heroes” & Blackout
I do not like David Bowie.
The only good side of this album is the song "Heroes" on it
Don't really like it that much
