Reviews (page 8 of 8)

I don't get the hype. Had Nick Drake earlier this week and enjoyed that a whole lot more. This album rambles, the flautist seems like he's playing in a different band entirely. And Van, could do without his voice warbling all over the place. Horns sounded good though.

Boring

Album starts off decent. Noodling on flute, acoustic guitar and bass on Astral Weeks is interesting, maybe a little disjointed. Love the vibrophone on Beside You. Cyprus Avenue is a mess; each performer is doing their own thing and the harpsichord is just plain distracting It sounds like Van Morrison recorded himself first then everything got overdubbed afterwards. I read the wiki article on the recording sessions after listening and it's close to what I guessed; Morrison recorded in a separate iso-booth while the rest of the session players recorded together in a room. The session players were all jazz musicians, which explains the constant noodling, and most tracks were done in a single take. Overall a super-meh album. None of the songs beyond the first three stood out to me at all other than the constant distraction of trying to figure out why everything sounds so off. Could potentially be better on further listens.

Great depth and layering in the production and that's about the only positives I've got. The vocals are annoying and the whole things sounds like a jam session more than anything.

Van Morrison is very boring to me.

Not one of my favourite

alright

-Every song is like acoustic guitar + man singing + one other small element like slow violins or drums or something -Honestly mega boring

Loooong songs

I know this album has received a lot of praise, but not immediately after its release. Unfortunately, I'm probably not going to be able to enjoy this album more unless the album generator (1001AG) starts slowing down...

I've enjoyed many other Van Morrison albums more than this one. It might take a bit longer to appreciate this one. 2/5.

Van has one vocal tool, a mumbly repetition of a syllable or short phrase. Fine in moderation, but it seems to be most of every song.

The Van Morrison songs I am more familiar with are more structured. The vocals on this album seemed to ramble with annoyingly dynamic spikes in volume.

I guess I just don't get it.

pretty forgettable 2.5

Just don’t like him

I just did not like it at all

oh good, more folk rock. and it's the brown eyed girl guy! haha. I think it's almost been 3 days since my last folk album here. 2/5.

umiddelbart ik fan

60’er folkrock, udmærket lyrik, halvkedeligt

Boredom incarnate

I can't stand his voice and the constant slurring of words. Things improve on the few songs that have something resembling a structure but that's few and far between

Largely just rambling over completely disconnected freestyle jazz background music. He has some brilliant songs in the catalogue but spared them from this muck.

2/5 nah

https://youtu.be/OaqxIXs_mn4 ^sums it up

Thought I was going to love this but the guys voice man... No thanks

Bit of a slog

Not a VM fan to begin with - trying to have an open mind. Astral works was ok. Beside You gave me a rash. none of the rest caught my attention.

Uhhh...nothing really stuck with me for this one.

not really my style

Great singer and songwriter(?). Can see this as a late night album to listen to when chilling or cruising. Not my every day style but I know it's innovative and unique.

im sure there are some great guitar bits in there but nothing caught my attention and i wouldnt listen again

Not really my thing

not very jolly

Whiney poor man's Bob Dylan. But okay.

Not a fan of the voice

Meh. Not as good as later albums.

Definitely not my cup of tea. Does not sound bad at all, but I don’t think I’d listen to this regularly (or ever 😅) Next!

Not for me, don't get on with his voice and too folksy. The way young lovers do is a good song.

Not my genre I supposse. Too "jazzy"

meh... looooon acoustic songs

Short album that's definitely unique. Some experimental jazz in the background doesn't help me like the album despite me liking Van Morrison in general. Sweet thing is a good song but most of the album is a miss for me.

Folk suave. Bastante coñazo.

Two songs in and I missed my old playlist. It's the kind of songs you will enjoy if you grew up with it, but as a middle-aged man with set taste this is mostly just a "guy sings about his complicated life" crap that I've grew out of years ago.

Some songs I never heard before, with that unmistakable Van Morrison sound and style. Not something I'd normally listen to but great in it's own right

i just don't like van morrison, no matter how hard i try. he just sounds like his tongue is five sizes too big half the time.

Another one I just don't get. I want to feel inspired by the Celtic poetry, the starving artist beauty that so many hear, but I hear a slightly annoying guy in a cheezy bar in Vegas. It's surely an interesting follow up to Brown Eyed Girl.

Boring

Olvidable creo yo

folk, soul and poetry. nice

not a fan of morrisons sound

Couldn’t get through it. Too “hippy flower power” for my liking. Can see the appeal, just not my music.

Nothing wrong with album. Just want to say that creators of this list love Van Morrison. Is it really necessary to have so many of his albums on this list?

I thought I would have been a bigger fan of this than I actually am, but Morrison's voice is just too jarring for my tastes.

This album really didn't do it for me. It might just be the day, my mood, whatever, but I found his voice to be mostly grating instead of endearing on this record. The music itself is OK, but this isn't something I would come back to quickly... 2 stars.

I found this uninteresting. Very little variety throughout, particularly in terms of melody. Feels like the same song repeated multiple times at different tempos. I kind of like his voice, but don't like what he does with it.

Voice still kinda grates against me but thank god it’s not Brown Eyed Girl level

i thought this mf killed vampires tf is this hippie shit

With no choruses, no hooks, repetitive stream of consciousness lyrics, and the average song length creeping close to 6 mins, this felt like it moved at a glacial pace on first listen. On the other hand, I appreciate the mix of flutes, acoustic guitar and double bass. Maybe I'd appreciate it more with another listen and I'm just burnt out with so many folk albums in a row.

All the musical grace and beauty of the crazy guy yelling on the subway

Albums you must hear before you die? This loon would have you die before you can listen to them all. Can’t listen to his voice without thinking of his nonsense.

Really peaceful, calming songs. Really unique instruments used. Fav song is ‘The Way Young Lovers Do’.

I generally like Van Morrison but I couldn't finish this one.

Ughh. I don’t understand the appeal with Van Morrison. A lot of hootin’ and hollerin’ on these songs for no reason.

I just really don’t care for Van. His vocals are not doing it for me and it just sounds like half formed thoughts. I would probably like this more if someone else sung it but this is what it is.

A question that arises time and time again on this list is whether you should separate the artist from the art and indeed if that is even possible. There are a lot of cases of musicians who turned out to have problematic personal lives or political opinions but the music still has something to say. In Van Morrison’s case his public persona on this album is of a fairly liberal hippy singing jazzy love songs with a bit of a spiritual side, and this album is perfectly fine if you like that sort of thing. However, in recent years Van Morrison has made no secret of his far right antisemitic views (writing a jaw droppingly offensive song called “They Own the Media”) as well as his tinfoil hat anti-vax conspiracy theories. It’s also no secret that he has had a turbulent private life and taken a petty dispute with a neighbour about a driveway all the way to the Irish Supreme Court to prove a point (which he lost). Lovely guy. So, I can’t really appreciate these songs as I might have done had I heard the record with no prior knowledge of his character. Your mileage may vary.

Nope, can't do it. Quite literally painful. How can anybody stomach multiple 6+ minute ballads of screeching nonsense?

This felt like an astral week to get through.

I really hated everything about this. Boring bland music. If this album is something I need to hear before i die I might as well be dead.

Didn't grab me in the slightly. Could also be because I just finished a red eye flight.

As bad as I expected. Did not finish.

bruh sounds like he’s about to throw up throughout this whole album

ummmmmm

I hate reviews that do this, but why does every song sound the fucking same. Holy shit. This is supposed to be one of the best albums of all time and it’s so samey and annoying.

I just can’t bring myself to enjoy the singer’s whiny voice. It sounds like a never-ending "boo hoo, not all men" rant set to music, which unsurprisingly matches the singer’s reportedly abusive behavior.

Who let bro sing in these songs that all I have to say

jesus fucking christ first song hes making noises i didnt think could be made elijah on the front cover too i already knew i was in for a ride nearly added the way young lovers do but i cant stand the way he speaks 0/8

oh boy, that soothing folk stuff got on my nerves quickly although there's technically nothing wrong with it...

This was the first one I really struggled through. I don’t like Van Morrison.

Vaguly folk-y, jazz-y and messy scat type vocals. On more than one occasion I felt like there were two asynchronous melodies playing at the same time. Which I didn't enjoy, considering the overall feel of this album is easy listening. My lasting memory of this album is me thinking 'Is this the same track?' Could be improved by taking between 1 to 2 minutes off every track. As that time is mostly just noodling anyway. Not for me.

Not quite my tempo

If this album is any indication of how the new year will go, it looks like I'm going to have a painstakingly boring year. Favorite Track: "Astral Weeks".

Was not a fan of this album

his voice is annoying, songs have no structure or memorable melodies, and are also waaaaaay too long - an astonishigly boring album

Sometimes I grab my acoustic, pick a key, and just improvise I-IV-V songs for 10 minutes at a time, saying very little, but singing passionately as ever. Now, I tend to do this alone, because as fun as it is to do, it would be excruciating for an outside listener. Someone should have told Van Morrison to keep his bedroom noodling to himself when “writing” Astral Weeks. This album sounds much more fun to make than to listen to.

Not even one song is markeble, it makes no diference or impact to the listener. Seens just like something to ignore, its really bad.

vocals were atrocious oh my days. lowkey unlistenable. instrumentals were nice i liked the flute at one point buttttt this was bad

Apparently this is a "classic album" I have given it many listens over years and I still do not like it.

Too slow Almost fell asleep

I've been waiting for this to come up. This is the hill I will die on. This is the most overrated album ever, bar none. I'm talking full-on emperor's new clothes here. I've tried, and tried, and tried again and again (isn't that one of his lyrics? probably) to understand exactly what has made this top so many people's "best of" lists. Dull music, dull melodies, uninteresting and repetitive in every conceivable facet. Every vocal line just follows the same couple of musical intervals - he's just doing the melodic thing in every track, which usually involves repeating the word "baby" until he runs out of breath. Or "sweet". Or every other lyric, to be honest. "Way up on, way up on Way up on, way up on, way up on Way up on, way up on, way up on Way up on, way up on, way up on Way up on To the avenue of trees" Bollocks. Don't waste my time trying to tell me the lyrics are poetry. I get that repetition can be used as a device, fine, but half of this sounds like he is just improvising on the fly and repeating stuff to pad out a few bars. Things improve slightly on the tracks where a full backing band bothered to turn up. Very slightly. Nope, I cannot imagine a greater chasm separating the general consensus on an album and my own personal experience of that album. Sorry, not sorry.

Utter shite

Quite annoying to listen to. Sounds like constant whining

I have a strong distaste for Van Morrison but these recordings are actually really good, I like the way this sounds. He just has one of those voices... as soon as I heard him start singing on the 2nd track I wanted to turn it off. Besiiididdeeeee youuuuuuuu chiiiiiiillllld Ballerina - "what if someone wanted to get real close to you.. for instance, me?" BAD. Ugh he sounds like he's singing a karaoke bar 3am

Outright garbage. No voice, no melody, no talent. 3 chords for a whole fucking album! Utter boredom.

Before this list I had always written off Van Morrison until I had Moondance which pleasantly surprised me. I was somewhat interested in getting this one after. But this was pure shite. It was like he'd half arsed all the songs and it turned out to be utter drivel. I went back to listen to Moondance to make sure my mood hadn't affected my ratings or whatever, but I still quite liked Moondance. Both albums fundamentally didn't sound too different from each other, but Moondance had more passion and energy put into it. This was disappointing. I was leaning towards this being one of the worst albums I've had yet but The Way Young Lovers Do was quite good at least.

I love this guy but these songs were a bit too mellow.

definitely not a fan of Van Morrison. For me this was rough

Really tough listen for me. Morrison's belting does not come across at all, and ends up feeling harsh and screechy. Rest of the instrumentation is largely uninteresting, but does have some pretty moments. Would be a lot better if Morrison toned down the intensity in his own performance to match the rest of the lower-key music

Yeah not good. Interminable songs with little to no variation and Ol' Van bellowing over the top like an injured water buffalo. The only good parts are the jazzy instrumentals added afterwards by the producers. 1.0/5.0: Embarrassing

i've heard this album one other time and i hated it. listening to it it this time, i can say i still hate it. it's not that the songs are bad but they meander way too long. van morrison isnt doing anything interesting enough to warrant an almost 10 minute song

was fine

I'm not totally sure what this is supposed to be. Pretty janky vocal style overall, songs are too long, orchestrations don't flow well, mix doesn't sit in a great spot. Leave this one to the sands of time.

This was awful. It was like he was just making up a melody as he went along, and not in a good way. Meandering songs that don't go anywhere. Stick a chorus in there occasionally, Van, it might make it listenable.

He just mumbles over guitar. Songs too long

Hard to believe this is the same guy who later created the wonderful, cohesive "Moondance" album. This is self-indulgent crap. Melody? Sometimes. Accompaniment that has anything to do with the vocal? Seldom. Frequent moaning in place of a melodic line? Sure. Instruments that sound like they were recorded separately by players not allowed to hear what the rest of the band was doing? Practically every song. The bassist is the only player that's interesting. Maybe this was good with 1968-levels of pot. It's not today. About the best legacy is that it later birthed a good Lou Reed song and a few good early Springsteen tracks.

Somehow simultaneously boring and annoying. A few songs that were fun not for the most part. 2/10

Was just a bit boring.

1960s flute and violin macrame Renaissance Faire folk doesn't really do it for me, and this record is pretty full of it. That said, I'm more a fan of the raw, garage rock work of Them. I think Morrison's voice is more suited for howling over some fuzzed out guitars than literally anything else, (and that is a stretch itself since I find his vocals pretty grating). I worked at Tower Records when his 23rd record came out, "Days Like This." It was on the in-store play and I found it irritating as fuck having to listen to almost daily over the PA. Torture. This was never gonna land for me. This is the first record in the list I actively skipped though a couple songs. If zero stars were a thing....

I like a lot of Van Morrison, however. I could t find much to like on here. Crazy flute and screechy vocals put me off. More Mulligan and O’Hare than Van the Man.

oh god I hate this so much. van morrison's voice is grating and this is making me angry. I don't know how people find this to be beautiful. can't they hear his voice? make it stop.

Weak album. His wonderful voice tried to carry the mediocro song writing but failed miserably

Meh. Loses an additional point for being an arsehole.

This has always been king shit of the heap of Important Albums You Must Hear (that KPH hates). I can remember throwing it on expecting to have the same revelations as I did with Laughingstock. The roadmap there was from the celebrated post-rock acts of 99-02: Godspeed, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, which was an unreasonable expectation for Astral Weeks. Because it sucks.

Mystical jazz dronings that go on for what seems like astral weeks! Hated it. I’ve tried a few times over the years to get into it, but it’s just not for me.

Awful ... one of the 1001 albums you will hear after you've died and gone to Hell.

Boo this man!

Prolly pretty good, but not sure I would put any of these songs on by choice... So since we're going by my own rating regime, is GON BE LOW

Great songs, great voice....it can't help but move you this album. Unfortunately, there's this nasty taste in my mouth when I listen to it, as the man himself has got increasingly more of an arsehole as he's got older. Maybe a little unfair to mark an album down on this fact but when you read & consider his dysfunctional, selfish, rude, arrogant attitude throughout his career it is staggering to believe he had wrote and sang such beautiful music.

not my bag baby

If Ed Sheeran really did put Van the Man on the jukebox it would definitely cause a murder suicide.

Just not my thing

i regret to inform that mr. morrison is intolerable for more than three minutes at a time. hard to hear, i know. 1.5

Sweet Thing is cool, only one that’s decent enough to listen through without wanting to skip. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this, but this does nothing for me. I was over this album long before it got going.

Did I miss something or was this just VM vamping over endless two-chord progressions throughout the entire album? I couldn't take it... I started skipping past songs... I honestly can't stand the sound of his singing on this one. It's unbearable.

Listening to this album on repeat would be a more effective form of torture than waterboarding. The instrumentals might have been fine, but I couldn’t hear them over the excruciatingly obnoxious vocals. 0/10

Did not finish

Boring

Boring too long too slow not for me

Yawn dude.

Alright, if there's one negative thing this list has shown me, it's that I have a bone to pick with Van Morrison. Ignore the fact that he seems like a well-reported asshole, why is *this* such a popular record? Inoffensive instrumentals with fluttering flutes, playing underneath the absolute foghorn that is Van Morrison's voice. He's talented, but that escalating yawp he seems to hit every other line is just... it wears on you. Every song on here wanders aimlessly through the mist, with some tracks pushing ten fucking minutes? Nah. Just don't get it.

Totaal kut. Ergernis. Houdoe.

Too Long.

I don't think I've ever heard anything so grating and terrible outside of bands trying specifically trying to do that on purpose. his voice is like nails on a chalk board and the music has no rhythm or any relationship to his singing. I think this is the first album I actively want to give a 0. How did this become popular?

boring singer songwriter folk siht again NNN

Yo this guy's voice blows. Hey man you don't have to shout every single note. Sounded like a drunk uncle giving his all at Applebee's karaoke

all the songs sound the same (bad, annoying)

Dear gods this is dreary. I'm on track 4 and can't stomach the thought of listening to the full 47 minutes of it.

Couldn't get into it. 1/5

Sorry Van. This album is awful. Way too long and way too much whining. I really don't know what this album does on this list. I've asked a Van Morrison fan and they agreed, its one of his weakest. The songs are just way too long and no dynamic on this album whatsoever. Same tempo, same whining. Sorry Van, I know you've tried your best.

point off for antivax nutjobbery

Didn't really enjoy anything here

I don’t know how much of this I can listen to before turning it off. I mean, he hits the notes, but Jesus Christ does his voice piss me off. The instrumentation is good, kinda Van Dyke Parks or something. But it doesn’t make up for the voice one bit. Fuck this. Almost sounds like someone found a lost Nick Drake album but lost the vocals and grabbed some drunk Muppet off the street to provide them. I’ll just never understand the appeal.

Depressing.

I prefer singing. No yelping, please.

No thanks

I'm sorry bu I need hooks in my music, this just borea me. Sometimes Van sings A LITTLE LOUDER, and sometimes he sings a little softer. That's about the only interesting thing here

This was soooo bad. I couldn't finish it, and I'm usually very good about sticking through an entire album so I can properly rate it. His voice was awful and didn't match with the music at all. I was so happy to turn it off. I guess my favourite song was Sweet Thing, but they are all awful.

could not for the life of me get into this

Not for me

I'd love this if i was found of country music

I'm actually really glad I don't like this clown's album. Smacks of sophomoric insights and beatnik-level effort. He's managed to accurately portray the sound of singing with your head lodged completely up your own ass.

boring

Dit is Kut!!!!

really boring, 1.5 but im giving it a 1 im feeling generous

Fuck no! I was made to listen to this on a loop. No!

pure torture. i hate that voice more and more every time i hear it but especially on this record because of how listless and showoffy the melodies are. van morrison is such a one trick pony. and i don’t like the one trick.

Really not good. A couple of songs are high points. But this is clearly thrown together and badly improvised.

Can’t stand his voice. Songs are too long. A prick on stage. Apparently a cranky blunderbuss as a human. Hard no!

Geef me dan gewoon Bright side of the road, Gloria of desnoods het grijsgedraaide brown eyed girl.

It just didn’t do it for me.

Fuck van Morrison this shit fucking blows

It took me 4 separate listening sessions to get through this album. hated it from front to back

7 Minute Songs but Nothing really happens

Lauluääni. En kestä.

Van Morrison should really stick with the horns section he rarely uses. It always sounds the best of all his songs. Sadly he instead thinks aimless guitar playing a yell talking counts as music and just bad poetry with annoying sound.

Slow dive and MBV are better

As much as I like a soft acoustic album with a wide range of instruments playing beautifully, I cannot stand Van Morrison's whining vocals. That and the fact the beautiful arrangements felt so repetitive made this experience an overlong drag. The only element here I can think to appreciate is Morrison's guitar playing which fair dues, but still doesn't save it.

I assumed I would like this album, but I really didn't. It felt like there was a heavy focus on the vocals, but they wandered all over the map and the timber of Van Morrison's voice just wasn't doing it for me. His held notes grated on me at times.

Shame he's such a shitbird and anti-science. 1 sad little star.

This may be #19 on Rolling Stones' 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, but I haaaaaate it. Van's voice is all over the place and the instruments sound equally haphazard; every musician seems to be in their own little world. The harpsichord on 'Cyprus Avenue' is insufferable, partly because the song is 67 minutes long. Oh, holy shit, 'Madame George' is even longer. Really not looking forward to when his other two albums pop up after this miserable mess.

Some of the instrumentals are alright, but Van’s vocals are atrocious and annoyingly repetitive. I listened once through and that was very generous of me. This list can definitely be cut to 1000. 0/5

Oh do shut up!

This album stinks

an incredible waste of new headphones.

There's dull, really dull, and this, extremely dull. LSD has a lot to answer for.

He sounds funny

Super not into it.

I will not listen to this orange bastard

Not my cup of coffee…

This moist-eyed camera hogger again. He's recently started texting me again, trying to rekindle our relationship. I'll tell you now, I am not getting back into bed with this superficial, self-obsessed jizz-whistle. His breath stinks of cabbage too.

This was terrible, was looking forward to listening to the great Van Morrison, but this was terrible...didnt make it to the end!!

Didn’t listen all the way through. I don’t like jazzy Van Morrison. Don’t like jazz.

Arduous and thin in writing. And the in and out belts on tracks like “Cyprus Avenue” were beyond irritating and makes me believe there was an pathetic attempt of imitation of bluesy singers like Mavis Staples. Just some gross ass minstrelsy throughout. The production was buried to a degree too.

Not for me.

Usually I quite like this kind of music as long as it's decent quality - and the well-known singer-songwriters usually are. But with the really grating vocals and the completely unimaginative, minimalistic, yet also squeaky instrumentation - no. Just a big and easy, definitive no. There are albums that I hated more than this one but gave a 2 (such as a Jay Z album just before this one). But those may have had at least some redeeming qualities, despite me disliking them. This one just seems bad in every way.

One song was good.

Tedious

No, just no

Not a fan.

Demasiado tranquilo, no me ha gustado mucho

dislike

Not my favorite work from him.

it's like someone took a bunch of self indulgent spoken word and added some background music.

Nothing stands out as amazing but it was good relaxing background music. Had a sound and feeling of the late 60s.

Been listening to this since the 70s. Hard to listen to anything of Van since his COVID prevention outrage with the douche himself. Eric Clapton.
