Another Music in a Different Kitchen – Buzzcocks (1978) | Punk Rock | Avg: 3.8/10 | Favorite Song: “I Don’t Mind” So this one really didn’t do much for me. Another Music in a Different Kitchen feels like a band trying to ride the punk wave without really carving out a compelling voice of their own. “I Don’t Mind” was the one track that stood out, and even that felt more solid than standout. The rest of the album landed in the 3–4 range for me—just a lot of similar-sounding, punchy tracks that blur together without much payoff. The energy is there, but it’s not paired with memorable writing or hooks. What hurts the most is how repetitive it all gets. You can feel the urgency, but after a few songs, it becomes hard to tell one track from the next. I get that punk thrives on simplicity, but here it feels more like monotony. The pacing lacks dynamic shifts, and vocally it never really breaks out of that flat, almost mechanical delivery. For a debut, it might have made some noise back in the scene, but from a critical lens today, it just doesn’t hold up. This one’s more historical footnote than essential listening.

Maybe punk is not my thing. One one of the songs really grabbed me. I will say I was surprised by the musical virtuosity. My expectations were way below how well they played.

This is pure original PUNK ROCK from the late 70's. It is a thing of its time. The major songs from this era have the nostalgia factor. unfortunately that does not include these. Not my preferred Listening material, though it deserves its place in history. 2

It starts interesting. But then becomes really repetitive. I have the album "singles going steady" and I like that one much better than this one. With this kind of music, I always have problems with the "raw factor": like out of tune guitars, the ocasional drummer not keeping time but most of all, I really can't stand the vocals. I know punk is all about the feeling, vibes and lyrics but I have a big trouble enjoying the vocals on every band like this. To each their own I guess.
This is punk and I mostly did not like it. Only took away one song from it. Just so repetitive and nothing that interesting happening. Same formula over and over, gets tedious.
Punk that isn’t as aggressive and in your face. Rough genre to rate.

When I saw the year this came out and the genre I braced because my gut told me this would not be for me. My gut was MOSTLY right but I did find it interesting in a few spots. I still having gotten the taste for punk quite yet I don't think but I didn't completely hate it at least?

This is the first time I've listened to a full Buzzcocks album. I've heard a few of their songs in the past, but it never really grabbed me. Some of the songs here are pretty good, and some really miss the spot. The vocals grind on me pretty quickly on a few of these tracks, which is odd, because it's the same voice on the other tracks, but it just works better. Lyrically, it's not the type of punk music that is going to make me come back for more. Since I didn't listen to them when younger, I've very curious what the nostalgia bias is with this band. The back half of this album really saves it for me. From Sixteen to the end of the album, I was WAY more interested in every aspect of the music than on the front end. But still not too interested. One listen was enough for me... It's what saves it from being closer to a 1 for me. I'll go for 2/5

Fav song: Moving Away From The Pulsebeat Despite being one of the bigger UK Punk bands, I feel like Buzzcocks just kinda lack any attitude personally. Production sounds a bit weak and the lyrics didn't really hit home for me either.
The singing is so off-putting that it distracts from the exciting energy and decent (as far as punk goes) instrumentation. The melody is nearly nonexistent in every track, and yet the singer somehow manages to sing out of tune. And violently so. His hollering is wavery, untrained, even a bit grating. In addition, the Buzzcocks have placed this horrific tinny filter on the vocal that makes it sound degrees of magnitude worse. I don't normally pay attention to lyrics, but these ones caught my attention for being your standard fare of punk clumsiness: "My mad love battery wants to charge you / My mad love battery could maybe enlarge you" "Makes me wish I could drop / Dro dro dro dro dro dro dro drop / And I don't like French kissing / Because you swallow my tongue" "You tear me up, you're a bloody swine / All this slurping and sucking / You know it's putting me off my food" One criterion I always consider when judging an album is how it works as a whole experience. Does the album tell a story, even if only emotionally? Energetic ups and downs are a must for any good record. Punk tends to get this wrong (being high-energy by nature), which is why I think it's a genre that albums simply aren't equipped for. Another Music In A Different Kitchen is no exception here. There aren't any "down-tracks" or ballads to break up the tiring passion and anger. All that being said, this isn't the worst I've heard. Shameful display of punk rock (or something similar) by Buzzcock, offering us an album full of... punk rock. I'm fully disappointed, even though I had no expectations beforehand. It's just 15 minutes I lost and will never get back.
There's just so much better punk today. Sure they were some of the ones doing it first but this is outdated. Only interesting in historic terms
Raw, in a good way with an infectious energy. This is a good showcase of punk at the time, but not an album I’d return to.
The Good: the words “another” and “different” in the same title… The Bad: grammatically it might be okay, the title makes no sense The Ugly: that they just didn’t stick to being the band that helped name one of the greatest punk albums ever… I don’t like punk, but I do appreciate the fact that they, at least, keep their songs to around 3 minutes max, so it’s easy to listen to one song without being overburdened. As I don’t like the genre, I wouldn’t be able to explain why The Sex Pistols used part of this bands name in their classic album, but maybe it’s because these lads are the OG? I don’t know… I don’t care… Will dish out 2*...
Early rock style with teen angst vocals. A good testament to garage rock, but not one I'd listen to again.
This album was decent but didn't really do much to stand out from the sea of other BritPunk bands of the era. The guitar slips off-time and the songwriting is really basic but I didn't hate it. I think I just prefer more aggressive, dirty punk. This was like the Sex Pistols without the sex. A lot of the songs sound the same and I think something was wrong with the cymbal at one point but I liked that you can understand a lot of the lyrics (although very juvenile). I'll give them a 1.60 because of the upbeat, ongoing energy throughout.

A fun and solid punk rock album which outside of pulse beat track does not offer much ground breaking , Regardless a fun and interesting listen , excited to run or workout to this … idk if a punk rock could ever make it to a 4/5 for me though as this is fairly solid
I was watching Nevermind the Buzzcocks last night. The adverts before it starts are as follows. Oura ring Polestar 3 Disneyland Paris John Lewis Michael Lors fragrance Singleton whiskey Nuromol The Buzzcocks would be turning in their graves if they were dead. This album was ok.

Few album covers and titles have evoked such emotion as this. As with most early punk, I found this to become tiresome pretty quickly. Some decent drum/bass exchanges with a few standouts tracks in the mix: You Tear Me Up, I Don't Mind, Fiction Romance. I didn't hate it, but it's certainly not my cup of tea. 2 / 5.
I started with I Don't Mind and got my hopes up. It went down hill from there. Not my genre I guess. Strong 2
Didn’t care for the first half of the album. It’s a debut album, but it feels too isolated and rudimentary on some of the songs. Either the lyrics are isolated and sound bad, or the instrumentals are isolated and sound uninteresting. Garage band feel, which has its charm. Second half of the album changed up the sound a bit and got more consistent quality. Standouts: I Don’t Mind and I Need.
Hohum... AH, this was just after the departure of Howard Devoto as the vocalist. That's probably why it doesn't resonate with me.

This album like many others on this list demonstrate why this is such a bad list. Now many English punk rick artist are in this list. Answer way too many. This album only made it 55 on the charts. Why is this even considered as an album that you must listen to before you die?
Ok, nothing special
Fast Cars was straightforward enough for me to enjoy it. The rest was straightforward enough for me to get bored. I don't even know what I want. Not this, apparently
I didn't care for the style of music, although it did have a little weirdness to it, which I liked.
There were maybe 3 songs that I thought totally sucked. I almost stopped listening after the first song. Dumb lyrics, crappy vocals, simplistic. The rest was ok for me. But def more background than something that I am going to intentionally que up. But the first song was so bad the album gets a 2. Who the hell does that. It’s like putting your slow weak hitting catcher in the lead off spot.
I put it on while working, and didn't take notice of anything until it was over. Well except for one thing - my concentration was briefly interrupted by irritating flailing of instruments which must have been at the conclusion of one song. Not good when that's the only thing that catches my attention.

Like Fiction Romance and What Do I Get (already knew this one!). The rest of the album sounded a bit too samey for me - definitely them trying to find their voice. Each song had some cool moments but overall not my favourite. 2 stars.
first song was actually about to make my ears bleed. not a fan at all, could be worse. if I had listened to one of the better songs by itself it probably wouldmt have been rated so bad but when listening to all of them it really starts to make your brain hurt. not my style soz. it just felt like same-y rock music in my ears and none of the songs jumped out to me as memorable or good.

Better than a lot of early punk music but still pretty repetitive. At least these guys know how to actually play their instruments.
Maybe they were revolutionary for their time, but I feel like this type of punk rock is low-effort creativity and sort of strangely prides itself on fast sloppy musicianship. I didn't really like it, but it wasn't terrible.
1001 (British) Albums You Must Listen To Before You Die
Not my kind of music, sorry british punk but you are not good, best British punk album I've heard which translates to two stars.
Great name. Not so great album. It’s hard to differentiate all the punk sounds and this one kind of falls right in the middle of that. They’re not trash rage punk but they’re also nothing amazing and ground breaking. Of all the punk albums this is definitely one of them. I did feel that they were at least a bit better lyrically than other. But still two stars. 4.9/10
I feel like I've tried listening to the Buzzcocks before (maybe in this challenge??) and didn't like it then either. It's not horrible but I also just don't like it. There's something that's too grating, even when I'm expecting punk/post-punk music.
I really don't like the vocals and can't get past that. Behind them I like what I hear, often a lot. But the voice, the vocal style, even the vocal melodies ruin what would otherwise have been much more enjoyable.
i am not a big punk fan anyway, but you got to be either "behead the queen" like the Clash or super clever like the Dead Kennedys for me to not fall asleep.

Fever To Tell is simple driving indie punk. Karen O’s vocals are fantastic. The first half to 2/3 is very intense and the last bit slows down but doesn’t lose its intensity, mostly due to the vocals. Maps is obviously incredible but so are the songs around it Pin, No No No, Y Control etc. 8.3/10 6.0/10

I’ve heard the name but was otherwise completely unfamiliar with the band. It all hit like the same song that made me feel very much on edge. I’d like to say I’m too old for punk but truth is even in my youth the closest I got to enjoying this genre was The Violent Femmes and I don’t think the hardcore punkers would approve

When everything clicks there are some fun moments but this is mostly fairly unremarkable punk to my ears. Reinforces my preconception of The Buzzcocks as one-hit wonders, even though they were probably more successful than that. 2 / 2.5
My five year old asked me why the man kept sat Ng the same thing over and over again. It is so repetitive and dull, a child whose main music taste is 'Youtube' found it boring. Has it's moments here and there, but few.

I don't know what to think of this... maybe it's a 2, maybe a 3? Regardless it didn't impress me or made me lift any eyebrows really. Doesn't really provoke any type of emotion other than indifference.

1. Fast Cars - i don't mind the chorus and I like the guitar, but don't love the singing style. 2. No Reply - don't like this one much, a bit repetitive for me. 3. You Tear Me Up - this one is ok, listenable but again the singing style is not for me. 4. Get on Our Own - this one is a little less pure punk but still don't like it much. 5. Love Battery - this one has an ok sound, the lyrics are a little odd. 6. Sixteen - weird again...do not like it, skipped. 7. I Don’t Mind - it's got an ok instrumental, but do not like it much. 8. Fiction Romance - didn't care for this one. 9. Autonomy - this one was ok, but a got a bit samey towards the end 10. I Need - just ok. 11. Moving Away from the Pulsebeat - at least this one was a little different, so appreciate that, although 7 mins meant it dragged a lot for me Overall, I don't really like punk so didn't really like this, not for me at all. I don't think they did anything groundbreaking (although I did read they were an early punk band, so maybe it was?) and really don't like their singing style. I ended up skipping a few because it got to be a bit much for me and it's a lot of the same sound, not much diversity for me. and like the songs go for like 2 mins, but it's still too long for me lol...

i see the influence and power this had on the punk genre, i love how tight it keeps the tracks, i love that it doesn’t feel sleazy for sleaziness’ sake. i stopped it as pulsebeat faded out bc that’s so clearly where the record should end and is a great finish. unfortunately. i’m just britishphobic.

Of all the Brit punk rockers I think Pete Shelley and Howard Devoto were two of the most talented musicians and they wrote some crackers eg Orgasm Addict, Oh Shit, What do I get and Whatever happened to. Unfortunately those songs are only available as bonus tracks on a subsequent release and aren't on this album. This being their debut is a bit more raw without the catchiness of the four tracks above so it gets dinged a bit. It would easily get 4 stars from me if it had those other tracks.

Eh. Not doing much for me. I was really hopeful with that opening track, that has a great riff and high energy. The energy persisted, but the instrumentals were a bit too fuzzy for my liking, hard to find riffs or melodies that stuck out to me. A couple here and there, but often it sounds like all the instruments are being played in a blender. I don't hate it, but I don't much like it either. Favorite tracks: Fast Cars, Moving Away from the Pulsebeat (really just the final portion), I Need. Album art: Sharp lines and sans serif text, off center small picture. Seems like '90s textbook or something to me, so I guess they're ahead of their time in one respect. I do like the name Buzzcocks, pretty funny. But cover is about as bland as the music. And the title's spot on, in that it just another album made by another British group I'll forget about in a week. 2.5/5

Another 70's British punk band, huh? Someone has a type. I'm a fan of this genre - I am - but this one felt lazy and sloppy. All the songs sound like the first "songs" I wrote when I picked up a guitar at 14 years old.
Standard punk - absolutely nothing original or innovative. I can see no reason for this being in the 1001 list. Punk is no more than OK at best, and this is average so it gets all of 2 stars.

Favourite track(s): Get On Our Own This album, even in its remastered version, sounds so polished but at the same time so unbelievably amateurish. Like a collection of tracks which were drawn up by a bunch of guys in their garage who really enjoyed aggressive guitar riffs and shouty, repetitive vocals with a "message". Funny how they obviously influenced bands like Billy Talent or The Hives, which I used to listen to quite frequently. Still, this seems very unrefined and, to me, is not enjoyable.

7/9/2022 - ALBUM #163 Today's Album: "Another Music In A Different Kitchen" by Buzzcocks - I hold a very similar opinion to this album than I do to the last album I reviewed, Mott by Mott the Hoople, with one key difference: The vocals are pretty unenjoyable throughout a majority of this album. Now, I think that an album isn’t completely defined by it’s vocals and can shine outside of a poor singing performance, and I think there are many moments where this record is able to achieve a level of greatness, but it is a common occurrence for me to feel like a song on this album is completely unlistenable because a large chunk of it is tainted with this whiney british vocal. I also think that there is a noticeable lack of instrumental variety on this album, with many tracks feeling indistinguishable from each other. The album probably shines the most when it steps out of the stiff and stale grooves to show off one of the instrumentalists with a solo, which alone aren’t enough to save any of the individual songs, but at least while they’re happening, you’re almost able to forget that the rest of the track is as boring as it is. I think there are a lot of solid ideas here and maybe it’s important for the broader evolution of this kind of punk rock, but I just feel like as an album listen top to bottom, it doesn’t really bring anything impressive to the table and ends up blending into wallpaper. Overall, this is a pretty energetic and jammy punk rock album, but it doesn’t really leave me feeling like I got anything out of it. Give this one a listen if you really like early punk rock and jammy guitar riffs, but be warned it doesn’t offer a ton in terms of a single solid tune. Highlights: I Don’t Mind, Autonomy, I Need, Moving Away From The Pulsebeat Score: 5.5/10 energetic punk rock that ends up getting too repetitive

Best Song: I Don't Mind. Not great, but it at least breaks through the monotony of the other songs by trying something marginally different. Worst Song: Moving Away From The Pulsebeat. Just another guitar solo born or nothing, going nowhere. Overall: Just a mish mash of noise, mixed poorly, that rarely deviates from the continuous droning line that drives ever onward. In what context does someone listen to this music? When so absolutely knackered that the musical drone mirrors that kind of stumbling myopia of heavy inebriation. Maybe then I would like it. Sober it's an absolute chore.

Annoying voice. Repetitive melodies. And generic instrumentals (not without some interesting bits, however). It has everything I hate about punk.

It's ok - not the most remarkable releases in the Buzzcocks' repertoire - but fun if like me you're into the sound.
I too love fast cars, but the only part of that song I liked was the bass. And that is about all I like on this album. It's classic Brit-Punk but isn't that formative to the genre to me. The Sex Pistols had come and gone by the time this album was released. And The Clash had put out one of their two albums on this list. It's a listenable album and fits the genre well. I mean they essentially started as a Sex Pistols fan band after all. For a debut album it isn't bad but their next album is significantly better than this one. Just doesn't really feel like it is one of the greatest albums ever.

I honestly just don't like a lot of old british punk music? A few standouts in the genre, but none of them on this album.
Not really into this one all that much. These guys are pioneers for sure, but unfortunately they fall victim to being the cliché of British punk music because so many other bands after them sounded similar. Not their fault by any means. Aside from that, the music didn't last much with me though altogether still wasn't bad at all.
I listened to this album a couple of songs at a time and it was tolerable but overall it's very repetitive, apart from a couple of songs in the second half that gave a much needed change of pace. British punk pop rock bands - buzzcocks, sex pistols, stranglers, clash etc. have their songs but not a genre I can listen to for any length of time.

Unfortunately this was a bit boring. It is certainly a time from punks origins, but it sounds like a watered-down Sex Pistols and the songs aren't very interesting and the vocals aren't angry enough.

Este disco tiene una vibra parecida a la de Sex Pistols, pero tres rayitas menos anarquista, y me atrevería a decir que en algunas canciones es como escuchar a los Arctic Monkeys regresando en el tiempo a los 70's. Creo que lo que más me sorprendió es la enorme discografía de este grupo, del que no conocía su existencia hasta que escuché este disco. Supongo que es un grupo muy local. En cuanto a la parte musical, si bien no me desagradó, tampoco me prendió tanto. La canción que más me agradó fue "Moving away from the pulsebeat" por las percusiones, pero si no volviera a escuchar este disco nunca más en la vida no me perdería de mucho.

First 40 seconds of the album had me excited. At 0:43 in track 1, Fast Cars, I was no longer excited. The lead vocalist does not sing. It's a nauseating squeal. Not enjoyable. When the group sings or is in chorus, it's nice maybe even good. Unfortunately, that is rare. It was about track 4 until a passable song. I'm a fan of the genre given the instrumental sound but the screechy vocals were a complete turn off.

1. Fast Cars - 3 Instrumentally this is okay but lyrically and vocally it's absolutely abysmal. 2. No Reply - 2 Same problem as Fast Cars but with even more repetitive lyrics. Drone out of a song. 3. You Tear Me Up - 1 It's just a bad track. It's the same issue with the first two track but despite a solid riff, the instrumentals this time are also very repetitive. 4. Get On Our Own - 3 Much better lyrically than the previous three tracks but the sound of the vocals is like nails on a chalkboard. 5. Love Battery - 2 Too repetitive like You Tear Me Up. 6. Sixteen - 0 Lyrically very weak and the entire final minute and a half to two minutes is just noise and don't even need to be on the track. 7. I Don't Mind - 1 Instruments go out of key. Vocals go out of pace. Not enjoyable. 8. Fiction Romance - 5 Much better lyrically and instrumentally. I am not a fan of the sound of the vocals but overall this is the best track on the album so far. 9. Autonomy - 2 The riffs are great but the song really just boils down to two really short verses, an endlessly repeated three line chorus over and over again, and a few progressive chords. It's not of any measurable quality. 10. I Need - 3 Instrumentally it's good. Lyrically it's good in parts but the whole "I Need" is just too repetitive and the most enjoyable part of the songs are the parts without lyrics. 11. Moving Away From The Pulsebeat - 5 Solid instrumentals, which is what 90% of the track is. Average Rating: 2.70 Adjusted to 5-Point Scale: 1.35 Rounded Down: 1 Star

Congratulations, your music is just as shit as all the other punk music ever released. I think there must be a mass delusion at play here, or do people think that liking this sort of wank makes them interesting or edgy? Be honest with yourself, you hate it too, but you have defined yourself by this genre and you can't get out now so you have to keep maintaining the lie to save face. Don't worry, we'll respect you for owning up, let's come together in a world where we can forget about music that is devoid of novelty, beauty, and lyricism above the most banal.

This album kind of pissed me off. I think maybe I was just in a bad mood to begin with. But fuck it, 1 star. This is like the Ramones but 10x worse. And I don’t particularly like the Ramones.
Now that's a stinker of an album. 2/10. Not as bad as OutKast.

This is the 72nd album I’m rating. I don’t really know what this is but that name is pretty cool. Adding to my Playlist - Nothing. Not Adding to my Playlist - Fast Cars, No Reply, You Tear Me Up, Get On Our Own, Love Battery, Sixteen, I Don’t Mind, Fiction Romance, Autonomy, I Need, and Moving Away from the Pulsebeat. All in all I liked 0/11 songs. This sounded like the Minutemen and I hate the Minutemen.
Overpowering marching beat - vocal not strong enough to compensate. Can hear the sound of punk in the album but without much of the charisma.
I hate this British punk
Buzzcocks sound very similar to what I imagine Chipmunk Punks would sound like. Did not enjoy this album as it seemed a bit amateurish throughout. (1.3*s)
I'm not a big fan of punk rock. Too simple in both song structure and technical musicality while also deliberately avoiding any form of musical beauty. A couple songs maybe stand out but not enough to figure out which ones they were.

Bad
This was a hard one to get through. Al thoroughly by (thankfully) it was short, its style was not good at all. This punk is something I will never understand- it has always felt like an unsuccessful garage band stuck in their high school ways.
Actual original 70s punk would have been so much better if even 50% of the band members were halfway good at learning how to play their instruments. Shit like this gives everyone decent around them a shitty name. Run along back to class now, little boys. 3/10 1 star

Pretty much a wash, rinse, repeat album. Not much that really moved my needle.
Offensively boring
I have to say I'm kind of over the whole "Punk with British dudes not-quite-yelling around it" The instrumentation got repetitive by the sixth track, and nothing here really inspired much of anything for me. "I hate modern music/Disco, boogie, pop/They go on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on, and on/How I wish they would stop." - Sang at the end of a song that went on and on and on and on and on with the exact same guitar riff throughout all of it, with the most basic of basic melodies. Couldn't have written it better myself. 1/5
I think I give up on punk rock. I keep saying to myself: "it'll be the next one. The next punk band will get me into punk" - and I am tired of saying that. I like punk rock elements. But as a whole? Fuck punk. Especially punk vocalists. Especially these "punk titan" bands that everyone has pinned on their leather jackets. This album? Boring. Plagued by shit lyrics and shit vocals. The lyrics are written by any 13 year old emo kid who got turned down on their grade 8 prom. I'm over it. I'm over punk. This album is probably a 2... But it gets a 1 for me for making me lose faith in punk rock.
