Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Sound of my childhood. Amazing record, maybe 4 all time great tracks on there. Gets a little samey towards the end but amazing music and production, very distinctive sound.
Hard to see this as anything other than a cornerstone of grunge and the 90s itself. I was never a Pearl Jam fan but you can't deny the blueprint Ten provided for countless other bands.
Strong 7/10. Will probably give it 8 the more I listen to it. Definitely has more to offer than L.A.Woman.
Cool, never heard a Pearl Jam album before. Nice vocals, and the instrumentals have some weight behind them.
Distinctive voice, great instrumentation, great lyrics. Captured something of that generation in a slightly different way to their grunge contemporaries.
It's good 👍
my mom is a big fangirl. great album.
i don't think i've ever listened to this album but i've definitely hear a lot of these songs and spolier alert - i liked 'em 3.5/5 prolly, round up
and suddenly I'm 5 years old again in the backseat of my mom's daewoo hatchback....how quickly things change
Pretty good. Def the most classic rock (ie over-wanking?) influences of any of the 90’s grunge bands, but there are some gems on here that do stand the test of time.
Many singles
loved the lyrics and the subjects they talked about. fauvorites: alive and oceans
Not too grungy Good
A grungy throwback to late 60s/early 70s hard rock. Power, pain, intensity, vulnerability, and beauty are all found. Heavy riffs that groove. Solos take on a psychedelic edge with a fuzzy, wah wahed sound and playing ranging from frenetic to melodic. The band builds and peaks well in jammier outro endings. Vedder’s got a unique vocal sound, but it fits the music perfectly. Bass locked in the rhythm with thoughtful melodic additions (and the random fretless action?). Well-written songs, though sometimes they can get a bit formulaic. Never got into Pearl Jam for wherever reason - probably still won’t that much - but I can see why this album is respected and may give it a spin on occasion.
Quite nostalgic and very comforting to listen to. Favourite song is Black. 4
ok pearl jam i aleeady loved Jeremy
Would absolutely go 4.5 stars or even five if it didn't drop off ever so slightly in the the of side b. Slide State of Love and Trust in there and it's a different story
My ex is a greatest hits person and had the double CD, so I hadn't heard the whole album since I had a copy in high school. Forgot how good the deep cuts are. Garden!
love this album imo the best from pearl jam. very loud and storytelling. my favorite songs are obviously black and then i also like garden and jeremy. overall fantastic grunge album from a fantastic grunge band 8-10
Heel goed. Kende een paar nummers natuurlijk al
One of the few 90s grunge albums I can FULLY get behind
I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did! What a pleasant surprise since I’ve been listening to them already for a while. I miss you Joel Miller.
Even though i like rock I don’t really adore this. But I can tell it’s a well made album. 7
wow!
Love it
classic grunge, no bad songs. not sure it's my thing but I still liked
I pretty much like it, I don’t know if I’m going to go back and listen to it. My vote is actually 3,5. My fav songs are why home and once
8.1
Never spent time listening to pearl jam. Really strong album to start with and flows nicely from song to song. Will relisten to pay closer attention to.
I enjoyed the style of this one but found it a bit repetitive after a while. Still, I liked a lot of the songs and would probably listen to the album again. Fav song: Jeremy - probably largely because this is the one I was most familiar with already Least fav: Why Go
Decent bit of rock, gets a bit too much for me at times but I like the general vibe of it, especially even flow (always reminds me of the skate 3 videos) Specific rating - 4.2 Fav song- even flow Least fav - release
Got a little heavy for me in parts but lots of stuff i liked. Good rock when it wasn't too grungey- wouldn't listen to the full album again but there are songs that I'll definitely come back to. Favourite song: Black Least: Why Go
hell yeah
classic for a reason
7/10 Good. I like my rock to have a bit riffing - this isnt massively varied in it's sound of verse/chorus/verse/chorus/solo, but that's cool
Loved it
Favorite track: Even Flow
Was shocked at how many bangers were on this album. An almost perfect garage album.
Generational
I enjoyed all of the songs. They started to blend together after a while
Grunge and rock. I like it.
Not usually what I would have ever chosen to listen to. I can see why, though, it's stood the test of time for the genre it's in.
Like the lead singers voice
an album that really shines in its instrumentals. i really love the heavy, full sound. one of my favorites was "why go" because of how prominent the drums were.
A real hidden pearl. I dont love the songs as much as the artist and his vocals. But overall very cool band.
Really good album and a debut album at that. It has a consistent rock energy despite having a REALLY hard time understanding Eddie Vedder. I liked Even Flow and the intro to Deep in particular.
What a debut album.
I like pearl jams style, just some songs seem a bit messy and/or meld into one another.
A solid rock album. They earn their reputation.
extremely consistent
Agréablement surprise par cet album de rock
A good record by a good band. Not perfect but pretty cool.
i like this!
while not as raw as Nirvana or heavy like Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam's debut was pivotal for the development of music in the early 90s as part of the grunge scene along with the contemporaries mentioned above. Power ballads such as Alive and Black were played on the radios and are established as a representative of our current cultural wave ever since, talking about down-to-earth scenarios and real life based events that Eddie Vedder wanted to share and can be relatable to anyone: family troubles, witnessing disasters, heartbreak etc. (to this day Jeremy stands as one of the most powerful and tragically realistic songs for a reason) Also we just can't ignore full-on bangers that still goes undeniably hard: Once, Deep and the epic Even Flow, that became one of the stamples for radio rock format ever since; the slower songs also have their own merit. Garden in particular is one of my favorite songs off this album, it has such as gothic vibe that fits Eddie's eerie vocals perfectly. All in all, it's still one hell of an album and it has aged like fine wine
With massive hits like Even flow, Jeremy and Alive on it, you feel like you have heard this album all before. But it is absolutely worth listening to in its entirety because the overall feeling of this album is a crossover between waining rage and increasing sadness. Now I know why I bought this on CD.
black❤️
I get what the fuss is about but probably won’t listen again
good songs knew already black and stays favourite
Solid rock album. Has quite a few hits tucked in it. Genre defining sound. Tasty riffs and crunchy chord progressions and the like. Wasn’t a huge fan of the use of verb in a lot of the mixes- taste wise. And in terms of taste not something I’d go back to- not a style I’m particularly interested in. But decent none the less musically. Had fun.
Good
Lowkey need to listen to the last few songs but I liked black
i like it, but personally a whole album of grunge is too much for me so this gets a 4 out of personal preference
Pearl Jam are a band of legendary status that I admit I haven't heard too much of. I love how raw Eddie Vedder's vocals are here, the screaming just hits home. His voice is filled with anguish and real emotion. The guitar work is very good here, there's some intricate riffs phenomenal lead work - the outro to "Alive" is really something else. The energy this band puts out is palpable, really heavy hard hitting stuff. This is a great well structured record and stands the test of.time.
Really good album
Vitalogy was definitely the Pearl Jam album of my youth, but this one has so many bangers in the first half.
Steezus christ
A classic album with some great tracks. An amazing debut.
Good rock that's fun to listen to. The hits are spectacular, the rest are enjoyable. Not a perfect masterpiece by any means but it has the signature Pearl Jam sound from front to back. There are tracks from here on my playlists so it deserves a bump up to a 4 for that alone, though I think a five would require more nostalgia than I possess.
Enjoyed this more than I thought actually, a lot of good songs but my favorite was definitely ‘Black’. Some pretty serious lyrics
Hell yeah. Grunge and classic rock fusion. Some crushingly sad lyrics blended with killer riffs. Bass that slaps you in the mouth
In spite the meme'd to death status of Even Flow, this album holds up over time. Hearing the lead singer slur through each track keeps me focused on work in chores and the overall sound is peak 90's grunge.
That was fun! Hasn’t listened to 10 all the way thru in god knows how long. So much emotion urgency & anger and killer guitar. Great album
Bring on the angsty 90s vibes. Not exactly an album i’d listen to on rotation, but it was a fun ride today.
another album i know relatively well, but always happy to explore again and see how it strikes me
3.5/5
This isn't typically my kind of jam so I was surprised that I liked this so much. Eddie Vedder's vocals really sold the songs. A solid album I'd listen to again.
90s grunge. Debut. Eddie Vedder has epic voice. Classic rock influences. One of the greatest albums. Amazing sound. Outstanding dancing in leather pants on a bar rock.
I expected to love it, but it fell short of my expectations. The first couple of tracks are great, but the rest of it sounds like everything else.
Geile Scheibe, zieht sich nur bissle
Hervorragende und mittelmäßige Songs dabei. Eher 3.5
My type
Classic
Phenomenal album. The guitar work is incredible. It was nice to listen to these songs in headphones for a change; there are a ton of details that get lost in "Even Flow" or "Black" that you don't notice hearing them on the radio or at the grocery store (yikes). Classic album.
Pearl Jam was a little before my time, as was grunge. But these songs are HUGE and the production is amazing on this. Eddie rules. This rules! I get it!
Classic
This is like a 3.5 for me right now but will round up or down on a subsequent listen. Thick ass guitar riffs and groany Vedder vocals - it’s relatively compact and surprisingly more laid back than I thought. Faves were Alive (obvs just a classic) and Garden.
Having never actually listened to this album front to back, I was surpsired to find that... I kind of had? Hard to think that this was the first full effort. And they nailed it. Eddie's voice definitely wears on me a little but it's hard to not call this a complete album. Highlights were "garden" and "once" 4.75
Back in 96, Pearl Jam joined Houmous & Chutney on tour. Len didn’t want them but management forced it. I remember when they finished their set in Hemel Hempstead and Len just said quick as a flash ‘I’ll give you ten to get lost’ 3.7 2/11 Even Flow
EVEN FLOWWWW
Always been my favorite Pearl Jam studio album
Before they decided to start sucking.
Forgot how much I liked early Pearl Jam.
Hadn’t heard there stuff before, good variety of music, very good
Nice and rocky. I like it.
Always admired this more than actually loving it. Something about the sound or voice doesn't quite move me, even as it should be right up my street. Taste, innit.
Fantastic album. After the first 6 tracks, I was preparing to give my first 5/5, the remainder of the album didn't quite hit the same, but overall really impressive. A welcome change to my listening after a few mediocre days in a row. Will be adding some of these tracks to my library. A strong 4/5
On consecutive days, the Generator has served me Nirvana’s Nevermind (five stars), the Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream (four stars), and this. What a 90s fest! As it turns out, Ten, though quite good, is the least successful today. There’s some serious bombast, and several songs could usefully be 20% shorter. And, to be honest, I prefer the sound of Cobain and Corgan to Vedder. But “Even Flow” and “Jeremy” are undoubtedly excellent songs. I’ll give Ten four stars, but it’s probably closer to 3.5 stars.
debut album of one of the big four of the grunge movement of the early 90’s. pearl jam still tour to this day and have become arguably one of the biggest bands of that era. this one is a classic. highlights: “once” “black” “jeremy”
First CD I ever bought. Only PJ album I ever bought, lol. Really like this album, though.
4/5
Never listened to all the way through before
Nice, pretty quintessentially classic alternative rock from the '90s. This is basically what I hear in my brain when I think of alternative rock.
An album very much of its time but very far removed from everything else it was lumped in with. Besides the flannel, the odd silly hat and angst, what makes it grunge? Where's the punk and metal influence? Why did the guitarists play like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn? Why does the bassist play a fretless and 12-string? Why is the mix drenched in reverb? ...why is the vocalist sober? History shows that they grew to hate the association with the other Seattle bands, but they were happy to appear in Singles, so they knew what they were doing. Anyway, it's Pearl Jam. Treated on their own merits it's still a great breakthrough album, but Side B misses the emotional and dynamic range that Side A has.
Fantastisk og ikonisk. Visse sange bliver lidt for monotone til mig, men Eddie Vetter skinner jo
Black is an amazing song....great album....no notes
Cool
I prefer Vs. Ten is a great album that holds up on the strenght of it's magnificent singles, but man it drags at times. 4/5 Why wasn't yellow ledbetter in the album?
Dino's femma.
Not my usual thing but I enjoyed it. Preferred the first half but it was all pretty descent.
A classic, but not a favorite fav tracks: Black, Why Go least fav: Jeremy
One of the big four of grunge, I’d still probably rank Pearl Jam’s debut lowest among the most highly acclaimed albums from each — those being Nirvana’s Nevermind, Alice in Chains’ Dirt, and Soundgarden’s Superunknown. That being said, it’s still a great set of songs, with some incredible singles. Eddie Vedder’s vocals are deep and powerful throughout and add extra weight to some already pretty heavy subject matter like addiction, suicide and survivor’s guilt. But that’s grunge for ya.
4.5
So great. Haven't listened to this whole album in a long time. The top half with Once, Even Flow, Alive, and Why Go is fucking peak.
Great
Pearl Jam’s Ten Or How I Learned Stop Worrying And Love Eddie Vedder’s Drawl. I’ve never been as into Pearl Jam as I have been into the three other biggest grunge bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains). To me, it seemed like Pearl Jam kind of bring out some of the country influence that the other bands in the scene seemed to flirt with. But consequently, it felt like they lacked some of the sludgy riffs, punk spirit, and queasy darkness that underscored the rest of the scene and really drew me in. While I still kind of feel this way, I get country now, and can appreciate that there’s more to Pearl Jam than I originally thought. For a band that was so small and young at the time, they really had a great sense for songwriting. When I looked down the track list, I realized I was intimidately familiar with 5 of the 11 songs here, just from hit status, rock radio, and pop culture. I can look past the overplayed status of songs like Alive, Jeremy, and Even Flow, and see the great tunes at their hearts which got them overplayed in the first place. As far as the other hits here go, Once is one of the harder rocking songs on here. And Black is beautiful and sort of haunting, one of Grunge’s best acoustic ballads ever. I was honestly surprised that the deep cuts here are also good. Why Go, Porch, Deep and Release punch with the other rock songs here. Oceans is more nuanced, and atmospheric. And Garden is one of my favorite songs here full stop, embodying a darker, more ominous tone than the rest of the album. I even learned to love (or at least cope with) Eddie Vedder’s distinct vocals, which I know turn a lot of people away from Pearl Jam. Yes, he spends more time drawling incoherently than saying actual words, but at least he’s got some style. His biggest crime is honestly making a generation of post grunge guys think that they were also allowed to do this kind of thing. Overall, I’d still say that this isn’t a favorite of mine as far as grunge goes. But I’ve learned to really love this album on its own terms in a way that I didn’t think I could.
It has stood the test of time reall well. It's still not exactly my 'thing' but it does what it does expertly. The big tracks are still top tier anthems.
Really solid album. I know a lot of people think Pearl Jam peaked with this album but I really prefer their next few releases. This album almost sounds like a different band compared to their next five albums or so. But the first like 8 songs on this album are all really good.
A band that passed me by in my formative years so it was an interesting one, given the status of the band. Black was the standout for me but I think others would join it with further listening.
A lot better than expected, more fun on headphones too. Wasn't as heavy as I thought from just knowing Even Flow.
Incredible guitar, great vocals. I wasn't expecting so much emotion to be packed into each song!
Jeremy Spoke In Class Today 1001 Albums Generator 146 (10/23/2025) When it comes to grunge's "Big 4", Pearl Jam is by far the band I know the least about. I know the hits (most of which are on this very album), but I have never listened through an entire Pearl Jam project. While I still prefer the more metal side of the scene, such as Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Failure, I am definitely walking away from Ten with more appreciation for the back-to-basics approach of Pearl Jam. The first half of Ten is truly no skips, but the second half is a little bit weaker in my opinion. The songwriting on Oceans, Garden, and Deep isn’t as strong as a lot of the writing on the first half. 4/5. Favs: Even Flow Alive Jeremy Least Fav: Garden
Man this album is a great listen. Evenflow, once and black go harder than most mainstream rock today. Some songs towards the end out stay their welcome
jeremy did not come into class today he left almost every discord he's in because he had a kid
Deep music and always stokes my thinking about life.
It had been awhile since I had listened to this album. Listening to it now, I have come to the realization that I held it on a pedestal to the heights of which don’t align with my enjoyment of the album in current day. That’s not to say it’s not a great grunge album and I still think it’s absolutely an important album. The first half is strong, I do think it suffers a bit because of the length of it, it’s not an even a back half problem, it’s more the last few tracks really. Even they have some good moments but I just felt over it by the time Release comes on and that track definitely drags on. Still a great album though 4 stars
- Thought Eddie Vedder was supposed to be political, but he doesn’t speak up against the genocide, so I can’t support the band anymore. - I did enjoy this album growing up, and it's still good... lots of great songs here, and it reminds me of my sister, so that’s a shame. I guess one thing that bothers me about the music (rather than the disappointment in Eddie as a person) is that he's pretty pitchy.
Classic and fun rock.
The first six songs on this record are a real murderer's row, and this is easily one of the best albums of the 90s. It's easy to forget how incredible they sounded in 1991, now that they've been imitated by decades of bands with less talent.
Great rock record, solid Pearl Jam album, a classic.
Repetitive
I actually quite enjoyed this one! More of a 3.5 but I'll give it a four because FREEEEEZUUUURRRRNN
Z plusem
Genuinely fantastic album that for whatever reason doesn’t quite hit my all-time favourites. Undeniably great and contains at least three classics, but maybe the more classic rock-oriented tracks just don’t hit me like my favourites do.
Actually so solid. Forgot how many bangers were on this album. It's not perfect but Pearl Jam is overhated.
One of the best early grunge albums with one of the strongest first sides of any album with Even Flow, Alive, Black, Once, Why Go and Jeremy as the first 6 tracks. Top Track = Black & Even Flow
«Even Flow» unendlich viel swag und de run vo dem track bis zu «Why go» löst i mir was us woni mir wünsch dasi en teenie wär wo gad geg d eltere rebelliert.
Even Flow is such a jam. One or two dud songs but otherwise this type of music is really up my alley.
I generally don't think I like Pearl Jam. At least not hearing the same 3 popular songs on the radio but man listening to this as intended - it's so good. Sounds like I need to hear the remastered version to appreciate it even more. I can still skip Jeremy though. Eddie's voice can overstay its welcome sometimes.
intersting worth another listen
A great touch of my history. Thanks
This is a pretty good hard rock/grunge album. The singing is famously slurred, and the real standout here is the guitar. This album rocks hard and packs an emotional punch.
The best band with the worst influence on music. Veder should have trademarked his singing voice. Excellent debut and album cover. One of the best from my year of my birth. I’ve only played through it beginning to end once or twice though. “Once”, was the B-side to “Alive”, but I call that a double A-side. They refused to make “Black” a single but it still charted. Album is front-loaded as fuck but I’m sure real PJ fans love the deep cuts on side-B.
skamteboard
Great Album
The album is great. Peters off in quality at near the end, but the early tracks certainly hold up and the album flows well as a whole.
First half of this album is insanely good. Second half doesnt live up to the first but still solid.
It was just okay for me at the time, but it has grown on me.
After reading about Pearl Jam I like them much more
So many classics. Another one of the all-time debuts in music history
Remember when Pearl Jam was going to be The Stones to Nirvana's Beatles? Yeah, me neither, because I have the dementia.
Jesus on skateboard No but seriously this guys vocals are so emotive and might be some of my favourite out of the grunge scene 9.0
Epic debut album. Every track is a banger. Eddie's vocal delivery is outstanding.
8/10 - now this is a good album, a distinct signature, good rhythms, some very good songs
Better than expected. Beyond the hits, really no weak spots.
FREEEEEEZINNNNNN… after that I cannot understand a single lyric, ayeyeaaa! One of the best grunge anthems ever written. Eddie Vedder’s howl carries it all, and he proves why he’s one of the best frontman the genre produced (bonus points for still being alive). 8/10.
4.5! i liked it, dad rock vibes. even flow is peak.
I liked this album! Yay for pearl jam. I also knew a lot more of the songs than I had expected!
A great debut album for Pearl Jam. "Ten" has 10 songs, hence the name, nearly all of which are worth listening to on repeat. The big single "Alive" is good, but the lesser-known songs from the album deserve love as well. "Deep" is the one that should've been a single instead of "Ocean". It reminds me of a great early Soundgarden song. 4 stars for "Ten".
Best of Pearl Jam for me
Short but great and influential
Great album! 8.82/10 4/5
This is the only Pearl Jam record that I know very well and I listen to it occasionally. Most of these songs are still great, though I don't think I need to ever hear the song Alive again. 3.5/4
nice
Classic.
black reminded me of e 😭 I know someday, you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be Oh, can't it be mine?
always nice
I admit there is quite a bit of nostalgia that colors my opinion of this album. Honestly, once upon a time, I probably would have called this a perfect album. My tastes and opinions have changed (grown?) over the years, but I do think this is their best work even though it’s their debut album. I recently went through a Pearl Jam revival as my daughter has gotten into them, she has liked all but 2 of these songs on our shared Spotify account. At the end of the day, I’m going to give this 4 stars, even if it’s a 3.5 rounded up situation.
4.5
Rough and smooth in all the right places.
One of my favorite PJ albums. Second only to No Code.
great songwriting, great instrumentals, great vocals.
Always thought of Pearl Jam as the most “rock” band. Basically square in the middle of the normal distribution of rock genres. The songs on here are great though - well crafted, great vocals, interesting progressions and good production. Not the biggest fan but you cannot deny the quality and relevance of this release.
Absolutely grunge classic EVENNN FLOWWWW
Solid classic rock, not quite as good as OG Pearl Jam in my opinion but still solid.
Dad- 9 Mom- 8 Mike- 9 Lori- 9 Michael- 9 Miles- NA Cole- NA Avg- 8.8
8/10
I really enjoyed this one! Although, I did have to read the lyrics to understand what he was saying but that was fun; it made the songs more impactful.
Great record, has a slight dip in tension in the second half, and Eddie Vedder's vocals start to annoy after a while.
Great voice, good music.
Their debut album. Grunge. This is a fantastic debut album. From the perspective of 1991 this was a new sound and direction. The style and vocal delivery have been copied a million times since but this album was before the cliche acts that followed and is full of great tracks.
Their best. They never topped this one. Heavier than I remembered. Hadn’t listened to the whole album in a long time. Still holds up.
I'm pleasantly surprised that I like this album. There were quite a few songs in here that I didn't know I'd be familiar with, and it all flowed together nicely. Not bad at all for a first release!
4/8
Pearl Jam feels like the soundtrack to a very specific moment in time - the early days of grunge, when everything felt raw and real. Ten might not be a perfect album, but it feels honest. Having seen them live, I get it, the power, the connection, the way Eddie Vedder’s voice seems to pull the whole crowd into his world. There’s something timeless about that. You can tell why he’s lasted, why the band still matters. This album is where it all started, and you can hear the spark that turned into something lasting.
The deep cuts on this deserve their recognition. I think the ubiquity of the singles on alt rock/grunge radio made me forgot how tasty the other tracks are.
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
Great album. The fillers are serviceable enough for how strong the hits are
Smells like the 90s.
Avec just breath ça aurait été 5/5
Jesus take the scateboard.
I really wanted to 5* this, but it felt like I was in a dream where my mind was making up grunge music and how it sounded. It was screaming for some variety which I think Nevermind has.
One of my favorites from the grunge era
This came out and was lumped with other albums as grunge, when it seemed like classic rock songs about alienation. Decades later it still packs a punch
Peak dad rock
Use to own this album, so I already think it's great, but haven't listened to it in awhile. Dark and grungy. I think I will always have a memory of the first time seeing the music video for Jeremy on TV. Favourites: Black, Jeremy
Great hits on a great album, your dad is likely to really love it if he's over 45 in 2025, you might also get something out of it.
the first part of this album was every road trip i've ever taken with my dad. sitting in the passenger seat of his pickup truck, cruising down the highway at very legal speeds, listening to the classic rock station as i watched the trees fly by out the window. unlike my dad on a road trip, this album seemed to get lost partway through and started meandering through the neighborhoods, never really getting back into that fun highway groove. it was a good album, there weren't any songs i disliked, but at some point i started wanting to get out of the car.
I thought this was pretty good, one of those albums I’ve seen many times but never heard. The use of wah was very nice and the guitar throughout was one of the best parts of the album (despite some bloated guitar solos particularly on the ballads), the dudes voice was kind of annoying but it also kind of worked (like he was doing a parody of that kind of voice) but it was definitely powerful. The description of this album genre wise is pretty accurate to the sound, very classic rock inspired grunge which I wish maintained itself throughout but it shifted to love ballads a few times with black and Alive which I wasn’t a massive fan of despite their odd popularity (definitely overrated compared to the other songs), the last song also had a whole like 3 minute outro after like a minute silence which I thought was a strange choice and kind of not needed. Favourites: once, why go, oceans, porch and deep. Overall, 7/10.
I want to give it 5/5 for nostalgia sake but it falls just short of perfect. Fucking amazing album tho
I was not aware how many Pearl Jam songs from Ten I heard on the radio stations in my youth. I mean, I don't know the lyrics because Eddie Vedder doesn't exactly enunciate, but I can mumble along with the best of them. And his vocals are great for grunge! These songs are extremely catchy and have great, solid guitar work. This album, in one word, slaps. Ten as Pearl Jam's debut is absolutely bonkers; their ability to create bangers and know their sound at their inception is on par with bands like Boston or Led Zeppelin.
Ah, Pearl Jam! Another grunge favorite. Pearl Jam is a bit different, though; they were grunge, yes, but they leaned a bit more into the hard rock sound of yesteryear, giving them a classic rock sound that wasn't exactly present in other grunge acts like Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and so on. Pearl Jam delivers some outstanding guitar jam work on this album that are very reminiscent of those classic rock greats. And while I feel like all of these other artists came to be included on classic rock radio stations (I'm old), I honestly feel like Pearl Jam was already on those stations in the mid 2000s as a result of that lean-in. And of course, I love an artist or band that comes out swinging with their debut album, and Pearl Jam does exactly that with "Ten". Many of these songs are incredibly well known among a general population, too; a testament to their mass appeal. If I had one small critique to make, it would be that the first half of the album is nonstop bangers and the second half slows quite a bit. But even still, these are great songs.
3-4
Excellent. My dad listens to this all the time.
some fun guitar moments
One heck of an album, starts so strong, but does patter out by the end
4+/5
I like, also meme
Rockin'! A bit heavy for me but I get it.
Classic
I mean, they’re no Nirvana…
Songs: Once, Evenflow, Alive, Black, Jeremy

This group of songs convinced me that Grunge was good.
This is a big. epic sounding album. I wouldn’t have guessed it was their debut, let alone it came out before Nevermind! I really vibed with ‘Why Go’, ‘Black’ and ‘Porch’ this time around.
Man, I love Eddie Vedder's delivery. He really tells a story with his stops and starts, his weird syncopation, the way some lyrics trail off. The music itself is great - gets me revved up, takes me to a different place. Very cool album. Love Pearl Jam.
I liked it more than I expected. Not as grungy as I thought it’d be. My favorites were the first three tracks
It’s great, nothing to add
I’m not into hard rock, but I always have a love for grunge.
Pretty damn good album
Ten whole pearls in my jam, fetch the chef
Would’ve made way more sense to have 10 songs.
The good songs are kinda of front loaded. The riffs are really good though.
7.5/10
Knew it.
This was surprisingly good
I really enjoyed that!
I've never really listened to Pearl Jam. I obviously knew Even Flow but that was about it. Ended up recognizing a few songs of this album which took me by surprise This was a good album! I'm not keen on the guys voice tbh but hey the songs were pretty good 4 ⭐️
nostalgic
Along with Nirvana's Nevermind Album, Pearl Jam's Ten ushered in the grunge movement in rock in 1991. The album's deeply intimate subjects like suicide, fidelity, first relationships and more really connected both in terms of lyrics and music, The album has a wild ride of sonic variety not typical of grunge, including syncopated hard rock, fragile ballads and Hendrix like trips. As a first album, and as sledgehammer that announced grunge to the world, it has few peers.
too intense the first time I tried to listen. pulled it up later on a walk, very nice tunes.
This is the best Pearl Jam album and one of the best debuts. It's still a 4/5 for me. Most songs are Pearl Jam classics, while the 3-4 songs that aren't are worse versions of the classics.
The front half of the album is full of classics and great songs. I got a bit over the soupy production by the second half and the songs weren’t as impactful. In the right environment I would listen again, particularly the classics like even flow.
track 1: Great opening track, I love Eddie's voice in here. THE OUTROOO!!! track 2: This track pumped me up! One of my fav track 3: Love this track, but the story is so dark + the guitar solo is amazinggg track 4: It's an okay track, good storytelling tho track 5: ARGHH THE VOICEE IS SOO MAGNIFICENT!!! ALSO ONE OF MY FAV TRACK! track 6: MY MOST FAV track BY PEARL JAM!!! THE STORYTELLING, THE VOCAL, THE INSTRUMENTAL, THE OUTRO, THE MUSIC VIDEO!! EVERYTHING IS PERFECTION!!!! track 7: I actually love this track, reminded me of U2 and Alanis type of music track 8: PUMP ME UPP!!! MOREE & MOREE!!! track 9: A track with a deep lyricsm, war is not good guys! track 10: INSTRUMENTALSS!!! THE GUITARS LEVITATE MEE!!! track 11: A great closing track! I don't mind that this track is long, I love getting lost in long beautiful music (8/10 might give it a 9)
Pearl Jam Ten I mostly enjoyed this album when I was younger. It’s the only Pearl Jam album I ever owned, which is a little strange, because they are arguably the most successful rock band of the last 35 years. Or at least the most consistently successful- Metallica and Foo Fighters would probably have something to say about that. But I really enjoyed the energy on the album. And there was a multitude of singles- Even Flow, Alive, Black and Jeremy all got significant radio play. I’ll admit it- I’m a sucker for the music that is put in front of me. Once Even Flow- my major criticism of Pearl Jam was always that I couldn’t understand what Eddie Vedder was singing- I’d catch a few lines of the chorus and go back to having no idea what he was saying. Turns out, I’d always known what he was saying in this song. But I had no idea it was about a homeless man, even though the lyrics make perfect sense. Alive- I think this is my favorite song they ever did Why Go Black Jeremy- I always assumed that this was about a bullied student who killed his classmates; I read a little more and its based in two stories Vedder knew about students who committed suicide in front of their classmates Oceans Porch Garden Deep Release From front to back, a very solid rock album. Between the talent of the musicians and Vedder’s lyrics (admittedly, I had to look up many of them), you can see why they would last for nearly 40 years.
Bra klassisk grunge
Solid classic. Takes you back to the mtv Europe days of teenage music
Comes out swinging with a fantastic runs of songs from Even Flow through Jeremy. End of the album kind of melted together for me. But overall it’s an album with a really strong sound and enjoyable songs that helped define an era of rock. Fantastic album.
9/10
As debut albums go, this is up there with the best.
I'm actually impressed with how I've unknowingly almost completely managed to avoid listening to Pearl Jam throughout the years, even though their music fits me very well. After looking them up a bit more online I realize just how incredibly big they are, and how influential they seem to have been. Fun to be blessed with their top selling album straight off! After hearing the chorus of 'Alive' my reaction was "Ah, it's this band!". While this is probably the Pearl Jam song everyone has heard, I found other songs on the album much more interesting, like 'Black', or 'Garden' for example. Overall I think this is a really solid album. Good guitar riffs and tone, and quality singer with a voice that works really well with the songs. I think this could grow to a 5 star album if I listen more to it, but for now it'll be a 4 star!
Grunge is not my favourite genre really. I thought I only knew Alive before the start, but I realized i knew quite a few songs. To my defense I think the hits "Alive", "Jeremy" and "Even Flow" sound quite similar. The hits are actually good and even a grunge-skeptic like myself enjoy them! The vocals and guitar really give a cool feel to the album. It felt fresh, fun and good. Solid 4.
album que j'adore déjà <3
Classic 90s rock, although Eddie Vedder’s overwrought singing can grate at times.
Ya ever just not know the names of a lot of pearl jams until hearing this album? Feels like I'm listening to classic rock radio but the rhythm on this album punches. Also can't stop thinking about how Eddie climbs the stage scaffolding and shit like wtf was he thinking.
In high school in 2008, I had to interview the girls running coach and she said Pearl Jam was her favorite band and I thought it was funny.
Good heavy, I understand why Neil Young wanted them as a comp band. A strange thing about listening (maybe it was something with the voice) made me really long to listen to "She Talks to Angels" by The Black Crowes again. But, that's me.
Classic Grunge rock album.
It's been a difficult 7 albums or so in 1001 World and against the odds the only ones I enjoyed were US but very much Zepp influenced Rock albums - this and Janes Addiction. This one is a lot less fun than JA but getting to the same score - rounding up vs. rounding down.
Positiv overraskelse!
All vowels no consonants
Vedder’s voice is a force of nature. A lot of raw emotion on this one
n sou do grunge
My brother got me this album (along with Nevermind) in 8th grade. It definitely still rips, but kind of meandering at the end. I'd take Vs or Vitalogy over Ten. It's got some great sneaky "fucks" that got on the radio (Once, Even Flow, Jeremy) and one of my favorite gratuitous "fucks" (Why Go).
Classic album. I wish it was more consistent. Liked Songs Added: Evenflow Alive Black Deep
I quite enjoyed this album. The music is well crafted and has a distinct and compelling sound. My only criticism is a lot of the lyrics don't particularly call to me, or tell a captivating story. They are still quite good, they just aren't quite my style.
Das rockt alter🤘 tat gern 3.5 gebn
A solid one, one of the best grunge albums ever recorded. The first half is perfect and explosive, but the second half goes a bit dull by the last songs.
first time listen. Like Perl Jam. Doesn't disappoint. Jeremey finally said something!!
Know every word. And yet I don’t think I need to hear this ever again. Can’t say I dislike it, it is a quality rock album but…
The beginning half of the album is really strong, but towards the second half I felt that it started to lose my interest a little bit. It felt just like more of the first half, mostly in a repetitive way. Not enough to detract by more than a star. Plus the guitar at the end of Alive absolutely rips, though.
3.5
Man, the Big Four of Grunge are so good. Maybe the only knock on this album is it’s a little top heavy, with the post Jeremy songs not being as strong, but cmon, that first half is godly. 4.5 stars.
When I was 14 I thought I was so cool and worldly by purchasing the “No Boundaries: A Benefit for the Kosovar Refugees” album. The first track of that album is Last Kiss by Pearl Jam. That’s probably the only Pearl Jam song I can name, but they’re one of those bands whose music I know without knowing I know it. I recognized a couple songs on Ten but never would have been able to name the song titles. 3.5 rounded up to 4
Pearl Jam is a band I have listened to a lot but never a whole album. 3 songs were already on some of my playlist and while Eddie Vedder had a great voice about half of the songs don't speak to me as much. It was fun listening through it but I will probably stick to my favorites.
Peer pressure is a hell of a drug... After avoiding this for years, I was inspired to listen after reading some of the fanatical reviews extolling the virtues of Vedder and the band. And I'll admit the whole Ticketmaster thing was noble. The music behind the voice is tolerable, even good. I love the intro to Black and Release, but at the end of the day, all Pearl Jam is Eddie Vedder. Either you like his presence and voice or you tolerate it. Regardless, I enjoyed listening to this more than I thought I could. And though I certainly don't hate it, it's not music that I find myself searching for.
I was once preparing a wedding speech for a friend who is obsessed with Pearl Jam. My original idea was to form the entire contents of the speech using PJ lyrics. So I went through their whole catalogue transcribing passages about love to use as building blocks. Through the exercise I also noticed that Eddie uses passages related to the ocean quite often. Having grown up in San Diego next to the Pacific, and being a surfer, it makes sense. Of their catalogue at the time of my wedding speech (190+ songs), they had 51 songs (27%) that have at least one lyric that references something related to the ocean and 6 (3.1%) entirely using ocean related lyrics. Dude is obsessed. ChatGPT says, “Pearl Jam frequently uses ocean-related imagery as both literal and metaphorical devices in their lyrics. The ocean serves multiple symbolic roles in their work—representing freedom, emotional depth, spirituality, danger, and escape.” I also recently tried to get ChatGPT to write a wedding speech entirely built from PJ lyrics because I never got there. The ChatGPT version was disjointed and choppy so maybe it’s not possible. On to Ten, it’s a really good album where the first half carries and the second half falls off some. IMHO Vs is the better PJ album that should be in the 1001 if only one can be included. Although I think both are deserving.
This is the 90s!
Classic rock sounds for Gen X. Another album that's deeply engrained in my formative musical memories - each song stands out, yet the album manages to be a cohesive whole. Vedder's social and personal observations are set off against lush layers of guitars, fretless/12-string bass and crisp drums. It's a saturated, old fashioned sound with massive character which begs to be turned up. Favourite songs: Once, Alive, Black, Jeremy, Garden
Big music that sounds like it was meant to ring across full stadiums. Gives Rock Star energy yet is full of stories about discarded and neglected men, women, and children. Has enough empathy and respect for them to avoid crossing into “we live in a society- the joker” mode, for the most part.
great album, all tracks are fenomenal
1. Once - 8.6/10 2. Even Flow - 9/10 3. Alive - 9/10 4. Why Go - 8.4/10 5. Black - 9/10 6. Jeremy - 8/10 7. Oceans - 7/10 8. Porch - 8.5/10 9. Garden -8.2/10 10. Deep - 8/10 11. Release - 7.5/10 8.5/10
Great album
gud
Not usually into this kind of music but I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Catchy riffs, good singer, some surprisingly funky tunes and the songs are interesting throughout. Definitely worth a re-listen.
Great debut album. I'm surprised how solid this is. Great voice, great playing and style.
I was surprised by how much of this album I was familiar with. Impressive debut studio album. There are some great compositions, but I am not sure where I land on Eddie Vedder's grunge scat. I would like to hear the vocals replaced with a harmonica. Without jest, there is some really great music here but it would be disingenuous for me to give this a 5. This album would pair well with being drunk on beers with good company in a kitchen.
I’ve never cared for Pearl Jam much so I’m giving this album an extra star to offset my bias.
Crazy how an album instantly brings back memories of friends and people
This album is just rock anthem after rock anthem. I think it perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a 90s rock album. I don't know if it did too much to drive the conversation forward with what it does on this album, but really enjoyable listen to anyone who is a fan of the genre.
Banger after banger. Some hard hitting stuff on here that reminds me of like a mix of blood sugar sex magik and Metallica in the best ways possible. Was most impressed with how consistent it stayed till the end. But man I just can’t fully accept Eddie vedders voice that’s really the only thing that drags it down for me
I was born in ‘93 and have never sought out Pearl Jam and yet I know half of these songs in my bones.
Another excellent debut. Gosh grunge was a great thing. Had only heard the singles until now but Garden, Deep & Why Go are now on high rotation.
4/5 On kovaa settiä.
Haven't been a Pearl Jam fan, but this album was a nice listen
