Reviews (page 5 of 14)
I’ve already listened to this album many times and it really is one of the best albums ever. Stacked tracklist with no skips. It’s a grunge album, but some of the songwriting and compositions can still feel delicate and graceful - a pleasant mix that can suit a lot of moods. Black is a masterpiece and Release is a phenomenal way to close the album. The production captured not only the bands raw grunge sound well but was also mixed and layered in a way that makes it so fresh and interesting on each new listen.
Perfect debut album from start to finish. A timeless classic!
Easiest 5 stars so far! Don’t even have to review this album, it’s a masterpiece from beginning till the end.
Amazing. The instrumentals of each song fully enveloped me.
SO many amazing and influential cuts on one album...and their debut? What?!
Good
Really fucking solid rock album. I loved this. I have to say the first half of the album is better than the second, partially drops off but overall it was such an enjoyable album, could see myself binging this many a time.
Can't imagine a better Pearl Jam album. Eddie is pretty incoherent but it rocks hard.
Awesome!!
Great album!
One of my favorite albums. Wish I listened to them more in the 90s but I was fairly young.
Out of all the big Grunge bands, Pearl Jam is probably the uncoolest. For a genre that was marketed as more austere, punk and down-to-earth than the hair metal of the 80s, Pearl Jam seems to disprove this notion by showing grunge can be as slick, heavy and appreciative of classic rock (and long-haired) as glam metal. A lot of Pearl Jam's strengths on display on Ten are probably also very controversial for the grunge snob. The songs are on the long side for rock, often containing guitar solos or other musical show offs, or veering off into the melodramatical. For example, in classic track Even Flow, the guitar is flourished with some light, glammy tremolo. (Some tracks even feature odes to bassist legend Mick Karn; what is less grunge-like than tributes to a glam new waver?) But the most controversial part of Pearl Jam is probably Eddie Vedder's singing. Even though slurred singing is a proud tradition in alternative rock, from Michael Stipe to Kurt Cobain himself, Eddie Vedder sings out of theatrical passion rather than ironic ambiguity, which gives songs like Black a lot of power, but is probably tragically uncool in the "real" (read ironic) 90s. It doesn't help that Vedder's mumbly style sometimes clashes with the clear stories he wants to tell; Alive has long been misinterpreted as a life-affirming song, and I only get the meaning of Jeremy because the music video has made it explicit (despite the bands protestation for literal music videos and the censorship of said video ironically also twisting the meaning into something more gruesome) Perhaps because Pearl Jam was not afraid to bear their hearts, their loves and passion, into this album, that made a lot of detractors say Pearl Jam wasn't really grunge when not only do they embody many of the facets of the genre, they (in one form or another) have been at it the longest before the break-through of grunge. Perhaps in being so passionate and as theatrical as the hair metal of the past, they were too real for the "REAL" 90s. Or at least this album was. Strong 4 to light 5
One day you’re at karaoke with your friends singing “Jeremy” and they start chanting “teeth, teeth, teeth” during his ad libs, and that’s all you can hear now. Stellar album.
Damn.
Loved this album. I still remembered nearly every song by heart. Took me back to my teen years.
I was thrilled to see this album pop up today. I've always really enjoyed Pearl Jam when I've heard them, but hadn't taken the time to sit down and listen to their albums all the way through. It's just as good as I'd hoped it would be.
Grunge go hard
An excellent album!
Classic grunge!
This album is the proof of Pearl Jam, at the right hand of Nirvana, with Sound Garden and Alice in Chains battling it out for the left hand, of alt. grunge's unholy trinity.
Outstanding, creative, energetic
Grijsgedraaid 😁
Came out the first week of my Sophomore year at UNL and ushered in plaid flannel and great music. This was one that was in heavy rotation for me. I played it on the stereo that my parents had bought for me for my high school graduation in my dorm room. This album hit me like a steel toed boot to the face and ushered in a run of great bands to grace my rotation (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains....the list goes on and on...).
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Once, Even flow, Alive, Black, Porch, Garden
yes very good
Still packs the emotional intensity I remember.
Loved this. That voice.
A classic. Every track is amazing.
I listened to the entire album...wow I never expected to love it! Powerful and yet some soft songs are included on this album. I definitely will give them a listen next time they show up with new songs! I am a fan... surprised myself indeed!
"Ten" is a banger, I was listening to this album a lot when working out in Portland. Perfect amount of angsty energy and grunge that pleases the iron gods. I especially like the tracks Black, Jeremy, and Release. The growling vocals by Vedder adds depth and resonance that pairs well with the electric guitar and heavy drums that is iconic of the band's sound. The building of chords and progression throughout the tracks blend classic rock elements with almost psychedelic riffs and long drawn out vocals with backing pianos create a haunting, mystifying feel. Honorable mention, Eddie Vedder is a top notch fellow and has done a lot of humanitarian work aside from his music career including activism for women's rights re: abortion and right to choose, environmental impact, and political reform. I would replay this album in a heartbeat and think it will stand the test of time as a timeless record.
Still a classic
Grunge!!!
Why Go and Deep were surprise highlights
Really great and Grungy. Loved this one
Very familiar with this one already, but it never disappoints. Simply one of the best rock albums of the 90s. No notes.
I feel 13 again. Angst and everything.
awesome album
This is Pearl Jam at their best
Already well acquainted with this album. It's an old friend.
A favorite group, but I have not listened to this album in full, before. It is consistent with their sound and I like it.
Fabolous grunge, a must have
And probably listened to this at least 400 times.... . Still a great one!
Easily their best album, so many iconic songs, possibly one of the greatest debut albums of all time
Just fantastic Future days the GOAT
Stunning debut album.
Love this album, have listened many times before. Always good front to back.
Nach wie vielen Jahren mal wieder gehört? Toller Vorschlag!
Highlights - I loved all of it Didn't like - Nothing, loved it all Overall - From the beginning I know I'm gonna love this album. Raw and intense but still melodic with beautiful chord progressions. So interesting to hear both the rock influences that came before and the clear impact it had on later rock and popularisation of alt/grunge. Also the obvious impact Eddie Vedder's vocal style had on later vocalists. Great riffs and hooks, chord progressions are interesting. Not sure what to make of the lyrics because honestly I can't understand them. I want to listen to this album a lot. This is an album I wish I'd known about as a teenager because it would have been on repeat.
Listening to this a couple of days after The Strokes was interesting. I knew that Pearl Jam was counted as an influence on Is This It, but I’d never really got how. But on this listen through, I got it. It’s all there in the arrangement, in the delicate way all the instruments fit together into their niche to make the best of the sound. Pearl Jam’s is a really good model to take from. I think Pearl Jam are unfairly categorised as the ‘Classic Rock’ Grunge band, because there aren’t as many obvious Metal influences they put on show. Soundgarden took just as much from Led Zep as anyone, and Nirvana had a song named after Aerosmith. What Pearl Jam brought to Grunge was a Hard Rock understanding of dynamics, being able to slow down and be gentle when need be, and a great gift for character, storytelling, and social issues. I first listened to Ten as an audio rip of a friend’s parent’s CD collection that I’d borrowed at a sleepover. Sometimes I miss the CD era. What I didn’t realise was that I’d somehow managed to unselect the final track, Release. For years listening to Ten, I was missing the last track, and I didn’t think anything of it because Deep is such a great song, and such a great closer to the cycle of ‘slow intricate song’ and ‘upbeat hard song’ that the album has been pulling since Black. Ending of the abruptness of a song about shooting up and jumping from a building is a fantastic way to get finish an album, and it feels a bit like I’ve discovered a secret chapter of a book I love that reveals it was all just a dream. I do like release, I just feel it’s a bit of a disappointing way of finishing such a good album, asking for release… How cliche can you get. Also, I’ve never been able to work out if Garden actually is about sex or not. I mean, it’s littered with religious imagery and that’s usually a bit of a give away, plus all the stuff about hands being bound, and I mean, it’s called garden for Christ’ sake. Anyway, I’ve lived with this album long enough to know that I’ve got no real complaints about the music. It may pull the ‘long extended outro’ trick a bit too often, but when the music’s this good, who cares? So enjoy my half baked musings and remembrances, and enjoy this album. It’s damn good
PEARL JAM HIGH FIVE!! Right on, this is exactly what I needed today. This is one of the top albums ever, for me. My favourite. Top 3 of my life. It is endlessly listenable to my ears. I could stay here a thousand rotations and hear something newly fascinating, nuanced, or emotionally stirring each time. Black has got to be one of the best, if not THE BEST song ever written. A truly underrated gem. Tangent: Omg Eddie Vedder was so sexy in the 90’s! Sensitive, brooding, with a glorious mane of hair and piercing eyes. His voice - thick, deep, gravelly, but controlled and powerful when harnessed properly. He’s my dream man. I’d give anything to lay spread out before him, being taught everything he wants to teach. To be the star in his sky that all five horizons revolve around… *le sigh*. Even if you’re not carrying the desperate and aching torch for Eddie that I am, you can hear that this album fucking rules. It’s hard, it’s gritty, it’s angry, so so angry. It’s hectic at times but also tender and soulful in an angst-fuelled way that only a brazen new genre of music and its accompanying lifestyle ideals could be. This album is perfection. Perfection!
Still a classic more than half my life since I first heard it, I have no trouble putting in my top albums list and with its passion and varied sound It still holds up for me and probably always will.
Discazo total mezcla de grunge y rock. Canciones espectaculares, con letras sorpresivas. Ritmos intensos y muy melódicos
This is one of my fav albums ever, it gets a 5 in an instant
Stone cold classic
Just as good as it was 30 years ago.
I was scared to death of the Jeremy music video as a kid after seeing it in the Hard Rock Cafe in Chicago. I deprived myself for years of one of the hardest, most unique rock songs ever for that reason and that truly saddens me. Such a well-rounded, well-produced (perfect amount of reverb) album with incredible vocals and great grunge arrangements that are sophisticated enough to maintain the legacy this album has into today. While its sound is clearly a product of its time, it doesn’t sound stale or dated. There are some weaker songs (Why Go and Garden, mainly), but they still have their place on the album between the massive hits and better deep cuts (Oceans is one of the most underrated songs of the 90s). Edward Vedward and the Crew really did it to em with this one
Excellent album
Ripper album. Loved it.
The 90’s grunge surge was truly something else. It’s one of the only eras in music I wish I could have lived through myself. And Pearl Jam was just another band that gave nothing but energy. If any group should be called a powerhouse, it should be this one. Where they differ from others in the same space is the raw emotion. And this is lead almost entirely by Eddie and his vocals. He might be my favorite grunge vocalist, simply because of how gripping it is. Listen to Black or Release and tell me you aren’t moved even a little bit by his singing. But I don’t want to take away from the rest of the band. Because there are some serious head bangers here. And I don’t mean that lightly. Once makes itself known very quickly, and those first three songs are some of the most memorable grunge rock I’ve ever heard. Rating: 9/10
A surprising delight!
One of my favorites. I can not count the number of times that I have listened to this record over the years.
so so so so good, deep guitar
Absolute classic.
I don’t really consider myself a Pearl Jam fan, but this is a really good album
I don't think they have any filler songs on this album, it's great from start to finish.
Classic album
Classic. But what's so interesting about the album is that it isn't really grunge, and also isn't really the sound of the band moving forward. Regardless, phenomenal.
It’s hard to not want to give this 5 stars. As an album it may be produced perfectly. As individual songs they’re all incredible.
meget bedre end jeg huskede den
I'd say wow. But that won't do it justice, so I'll say ShamWow! (tm).
An easy 5 for me. Not only are there the absolute bangers like Even Flow, Black, Garden, and Jeremy, but the rest of the album is a pretty surprising diverse set of passionate songs. Pearl Jam sounds great whether delivering higher energy songs like Porch or slower tempo like Black. An amazing album.
Crushed it
Instant classic. One of my favourite albums by my favourite bands. Classic 90s alt-rock. Every track stands out, Eddie Vedder’s voice is distinct and their riffs clean and sharp. 5/5.
Grunge founding fathers or the last great classic rock band? At the time it seemed like the birth of something new with this dirty and heavy punk/metal infused break with the canon but 3 decades of hindsight and radio play make it seem more like the culmination than a rupture. Big 70s Zeppelin style riffs and grandure, Hendrix-inspired wahwah guitar leads all over the place, and Neil Young's chaotic electric intensity combined with a punk sensibility disenchanted with the overblown pomp of 80s rock. There's not a ton of variety on this album and they set the template for 1000s of terrible mid-tempo buttrockers to follow so its hard not to hold that against them, but these songs pretty much all rule. Energetic playing, impassioned vocal delivery, incredible hooks and anthemic choruses throughout.
This is going to be a ten out of ten for me every time just because of how iconic the album was when I was a teenager.
Love a grundge era album
Eddie Vedder
Unreal how Pearl Jam came out of the gates with this album. It's full of hits everyone knows and the songs are unique and a creative in a way that wasn't done before. Another album that is just incredible from start to finish.
Always favored Nirvana, but no denying this is a monster debut.
Great album finally good music albums after terrible anyway good band good music and good meanings behind every track.
This album is so good, I've loved it since high school. Black is probably still my favorite. This is one of the first things I listened to that helped me appreciate music as art.
I've never really seeked out Pearl Jam in any way, but I think I've heard nearly every song on here before. This is both an iconic 90's album and an iconic rock album, and it absolutely slaps with dark grungy energy. An all-around excellent listen. Favourite: Even Flow
Not for me
A few years before the battle of Britpop in the UK, there was the Battle of Grunge in Seattle. Nirvana and Pearl Jam neck and neck until Kurt Cobain played the ultimate Uno reverso card that shot Nirvana into infamy. However, I firmly believe that if it wasn't for Cobain's self-sacrifice, then history would be talking about Pearl Jam much more than that other band. This album is great and so genuine to the time. It's raw, it's real, it's amazing.
Grew up listening to Pearl Jam. The classic rock of my generation.
Phenomenal Album. I don't have too much to comment on. When I already have over 1/2 of the individual songs saved before even listening to the album theres not much to think about
A perfect all around rock album. Every song feels like it has a place on the album. This album has no skips. Top 3 songs: Garden, Even Flow, Black.
Has there ever been an album with more singles? Maybe a Beatles album? Either way, just incredibly high percentage of well received rock anthems and deservedly so
Classic album.
More from my bud GPT3.5, actually reflecting many of my own feelings about this album (also think the recording is fantastic and I absolutely love the drum mix): "Ten" by Pearl Jam is an absolute masterpiece, earning every bit of its five-star rating. From the moment you hit play, the album takes you on an exhilarating journey through the grunge era, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape. The opening track, "Once," sets the tone with its raw energy and Eddie Vedder's unmistakably powerful vocals. Each song that follows is a testament to the band's exceptional musicianship and songwriting prowess. "Alive" and "Even Flow" showcase the dynamic interplay between the instruments, while Vedder's evocative lyrics add depth and meaning to every track. The album's emotional core is perhaps best exemplified by "Black," a hauntingly beautiful ballad that stands as a timeless classic. Vedder's soul-stirring delivery and the poignant instrumentation create an unforgettable listening experience that resonates long after the final notes fade. "Ten" isn't just an album; it's a cultural touchstone that encapsulates the spirit of the '90s alternative rock scene. Pearl Jam's ability to seamlessly blend grunge, rock, and introspective lyrics is unparalleled, making this album a must-listen for music enthusiasts of all genres. In essence, "Ten" is a five-star triumph, a sonic journey that remains as impactful today as it was upon its release. Pearl Jam's debut is not just a record; it's a timeless masterpiece that deserves its place among the greatest albums of all time."
Awesome
GREAT and love how it loops
Much better and more powerful than I remembered. This is an iconic '90s album but is timeless. It's clear with hindsight that the passion in the vocals, lyrics, and performances set Pearl Jam apart.
A blast of raw anguish held together with soaring alt rock power. Essential.
It's not often you listen to an album that has no low points, where every song is at least "very good" and many are classics. And this was Pearl Jam's first! In truth, they'd never quite reach this level of completeness again, with subsequent albums feeling more experimental and less sure of themselves. Ten, though, is a work of genius. Songs like Black, Jeremy, Even Flow, Alive are endlessly listenable and perfectly representative of their time. Ten was the first CD I ever bought, and I never tire of playing it.
A super strong rock album. It's hard to believe this is their debut, there are so many hits and they have a consistent sound throughout. Fantastic rock through and through. No complaints.
Gen X Grunge Classic. I'd have to turn in my Gen X Membership Card if I didn't give it 5 Stars.
This album fuckin rules. What a debut. I went through a huge Pearl Jam phase in 2014 and listened to this album almost every day. Going to watch their MTV unplugged now after this.
I loved this album in the 90's, It was one of those albums of my youth...but I don't think I've listened to it in almost 20 years. Even Spotify doesn't have any of the songs hearted but going back to this, the nostalgia kicked in. I'm trying to judge this without letting nostalgia effect my feelings but that is difficult. This is a great album, and while Eddie Vedder is not the strongest singer out there, these songs are just so memorable. Standouts: Even Flow, Alive, Black, Jeremy
Fantastic songs, great guitar work, I love the production and sounds.
Does it have some pacing issues? Yes. Does it immediately put me into am angsty teen mindset? Also yes. Can I still sing along to half the songs? You bet.
Personal all time favorite album so an easy 5
Bands that got massive radio play in the 90s are weird because some of them (Pearl Jam included) are precious to me, and some of them were so overplayed that I cannot stand them now (Creed). Start to finish fantastic rock. Unique, bordering on weird in a way that was important to me as a kid. Of Alice In Chains' Layne Staley, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, it seems cruel that the one who got his shit together and became a vegan and insufferable and might now be immortal is the latter.
Got this album for my 9th? birthday, still good.
This album was a great second for me - a big pickup from yesterday and my start. It absolutely belongs on this list. Every song is a hit and signs of more to come. Ten, and Nirvana’s Nevermind, together killed the 80’s scene and music. Hairbands faded quickly into black.
A classic
I admit my bias, because this is one of the, if not the first, CDs I ever owned. This was a nostalgia trip, and it is still excellent. Black is my favorite Pearl Jam song, but listening again I remember liking some of the lesser known songs like Deep and Garden quite a bit. I enjoyed it all the way through.
Not a weak track on this album but can’t help but feel this probably doesn’t resonate with the young people like it did in the 90s.
Anyone who knows me, knows this album is a 5/5 for me. Lyrically this album hits hard and deals with heavy subject matters of betrayal, loss, love, death, empathy, hatred, resentment, homelessness, depression, healing, the list goes on. It's the quintessential Seattle album. Many artists have written similar to the aforementioned but Eddie Vedder uses his voice in a way that compliments the instruments and brings out the tenacity, the emotion, frustration, and anger of the lyrics that really hits you. This record is emotional and beautiful despite the dark over tones. To this day, Eddie Vedder has penned my favourite lyric ever written. Fom the song Black: "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life. I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why, Why, why can't it be, why can't it be mine?" The delivery of this lyric is heartbreakingly beautiful. There isn't a bad song on this album. And it's an essential 90s rock album that will forever be hailed as one of the best rock album debuts ever. I give Pearl Jam, and specifically this album, the reason why I fell in love with guitar driven rock music. Eddie Vedder's lyrics have always resonated with me. Despite his legacy of having the 'yarl' - which, doesn't bother me, the range and emotion in his vocals make him once of my favourite vocalists. Can't express how much I love this album. Ten/5
Classic grunge album, really good from top to bottom. It's hard to find issues with genre-defining releases.
Un de mes disques préférés du groupe. Les compositions sont bien écrites.
Classic album. Part of the soundtrack of my teenage years.
I’d never actually listened to the whole album, only the big singles but what a great album.
the rating is in the name itself
Ten out of 10 (but honestly, how do you put 11 tracks on an album called Ten?)
Favorite Tracks: Once, Even Flow, Alive, Black, Jeremy, Oceans, Porch, Garden, Release
10
Nice. Nostalgic.
All-time classic. I was 16 when this came out and still listened to it through the years very frequently.
Great album from the 90's
Love this vibe
- Never was a big Pearl Jam guy but this is a goated grunge album - Great grit to vocals and great lyrics - A couple iconic songs
- possibly the greatest debut album ever - so many great songs, but Black stands above them all
I'm probably very biased on this one. I grew up on a lot of 80 and 90s alt rock, and Pearl Jam is very much a key pillar in that genre. For good reason though, this album is great. Most of the songs off this album are now considered rock classic. Kicking off with Once, followed by Even Flow and then Alive creates such an energetic start to this album. Black remains one of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs ever recorded. This is the start of a beloved band and I don't think they could have made a better introduction.
One of the best ever
One of my all time favorites. I can listen to it front to back. Oceans and Release Me are probably my favorite songs on the album. Sang Porch at open mic once. Great nostalgia.
Enjoyed this album. I've never listened to it from front to back. It's a keeper for sure.
It's cum right?
Absolute banger of an album. Love it as much today as the first time I heard it.
Classic
A true masterpiece
Love this album
Ten by Pearl Jam is, to me, the quintessential album of the 1990s. I honestly can’t even remember the first time I heard it because it feels like it was always there, woven into my high school years and the identity of my generation. At the time, this style of music was labeled “grunge,” but for many of us, it was more than just a genre. It captured a mood, an attitude, and a sense of emotional honesty that felt deeply personal. Pearl Jam has made many great albums since, but they’ve never quite managed to capture lightning in a bottle the way they did with Ten. Their follow-up, Vs., came close, but there’s something uniquely raw and timeless about this record that still resonates decades later.
One of the best albums in the last 30 years.
Not the touchstone it is for many of my generation, but excellent none the less.
Great! Early Gruge!
10/10
Classic
It's impossible for me to listen to this album without thinking of being 14 years old in 1992, and the 50 million times I listened to it on my walkman.
Turbūt vienas iš mano mėgstamiausių albumų. Nesu didžiausias Grunge fanas, tačiau šį albumą galiu klausyti ir klausyti. Nuo įstabių instrumentų iki man ypatingai patinkančio Vedderio vokalo. Visas albumas klausomas nuo pradžios iki galo, neturi fillerių, o albumo šokinėjanti tematika prideda papildomų taškų, o ne atima. Paklausius dar kartą "Black" išlieka kaip nemirštantis širdies himnas, kurį nešiosiuos dar metų metus. Tačiau vietoje hitų kaip "Even Flow" ar "Porch" šį kartą įspūdi paliko "Oceans" daina. Turbūt su metais lyrinės temos keičiasi.
One of the best rock debuts of all time. So many amazing songs just from this one album. Eddie Vedder’s voice is so unique and stands out so well on this album. Essentials: Jeremy (added to playlist) Even Flow Alive Black
Liked it
Love Love Love this album. 2 thumbs up.
All timer
Freedom fighter on a desert road, tough and sweet and on its way.
one of my favorite albums ever
LP
Sonzao nask, das antiga já
Brilliant album. Every song is a total banger. Put off listening to this one for years.... Why?? Amazing.
C'mon... Do I even need to review this one for my group? I've been to 20 Pearl Jam shows to the point where 'Alive' has moved from a lament to a celebration. When I was sick with COVID and the complications from Long COVID, the thing that kept me going was the Pearl Jam show at MSG scheduled for 9/11/22. I got there and 'Garden' tore me up. The production on the album is very early-90s and the remixed version of the album is truer to the band's live sound, but this is an anthemic album...one that I still listen to regularly. 5/5
What an amazing voice that makes you FEEL and the lyrics that express so much. One of the best bands ever in my opinion. Sometimes really dark but very real.
Eddie Vedder mumbling and heavy grunge riffs in all their glory. Prime pearl jam. The whole album is solid more so than I expected.
This album whips hard as steel. It's aged wonderfully and I should know, it was released the same year I was.
Incredible from start to finish. That voice!
This album has everything: - The smash hits (Jeremy, Black, etc.) - A fire opener (Once) - Good deep cuts (Deep, Porch) - The song that people playing Skate 3 play while their character that looks like Jesus does a Christ Air off the Mega Ramp (Even Flow) - The song that Nolan screams over and over while Eddie Vedder rants onstage and guys are passing out in the crowd (Release) Altogether this album is a...Ten out of 10
Amazing, I’ve listened to it about 6 times in the past 2 days; emotionally expressed very well and I was shocked to find out this was their debut
BEST SONGS: -Once -Black
Do I regret leaving halfway through Pearl Jam's set at Leeds Festival 2006 to see Maxïmo Park? No. The former were a slog, the latter were great. Can I admit that this is a classic hard rock album anyway? Yes. The playing and the singing is strong, and there are several killer tracks back-to-back (the subtle transition from Why Go to Black, incidentally, is a lovely little moment). I’m knocking off half a star because they made their best track, Yellow Ledbetter, a B-side instead of including it on the weaker second half of Ten. Seriously, what were they thinking?? But, even as someone who occasionally finds Pearl Jam a bit of a slog, I can’t identify any sustained lulls in quality on this album. 4.5
Hot summer day music Passionately discontent and willing to fix it Quintessential grunge
Classic
This was in heavy rotation back then. As strong a first album as there is. I haven't listened thru in years. There's a few songs that aren't as good as I remember. But at least 7 total bangers on the album. Classic.
This is one of the classics grunge albums and also one of the best records of the 1990s. First I gave it four stars, but I must admit it's way better. Thanks to the "edit ratings" option, this is corrected. Great vocals, lyrics and songs. Hard to imagine the songs were already completed before the vocals were recorded and lyrics written. It just fits so well.
Banger
Ten out of five stars.
Probably pound for pound the best grunge album.
better than nevermind
One of my favorite albums of all time. Great singing by Vedder, great guitar solos by McCready, love Ament’s bass lines!
BEST ALBUM EVER
This was actually really good. Pearl Jam was a lot darker than the impression I had of them. Every track was consistently good, it's an album you can listen to front to back. BT - Master/Slave - Alive - Black - Jeremy - Oceans - Why Go - Garden
One of the best albums ever recorded
Pearl Jam was one of the earlier bands I got really into as a kid. I was not super into them for long, perhaps a year, before I moved on to other things. In the intervening years I and I feel like most people, kind of wrote Pearl Jam off as cheesy and uncool. You don't hear them talked about in the same hushed tones as their peers like Nirvana or Soundgarden. I have to say, revisiting this, it's kind of a banger. Pearl Jam's biggest sin here is that their version of grunge is rooted more heavily in hard rock than punk. This is VERY much more in the vein of Guns N Roses than The Clash. I had completely forgotten the flashy guitar solos and strutting grooves, and surprised myself very much with how much I enjoyed it. Will listen again much sooner than 30 years!
So many jams. It’s unfortunate this got lumped into the 90s grunge scene because it’s so much more than that.
I love this album. A breakup album though. Be careful.
Amazing album
Once: Guitar hero material, would be fun to play, its simple but not boring which is a pretty cool quality Even flow: freeeeeezeeeennn bleababababa 🎸 Ciiiiiieeeeleeeeenn shebabadada even floooooooow🤟🤟 The ride symbol durring the chorus really makes the chorus great. This is clearly a top tier song, people who don't know who pearl jam is know this song because its just for the intro and the chorus its just that good. These songs have slow tempo, but they are still full of energy and make you wanna do stuff, impressive Alive: hits all the good brain feels, that bass tone is so clean behind the slightly scratchy guitar, the bass comes out so much without you even realizing thats its really driving the song. And the snare sound is just perfect for this song. Everything is just perfect. Like everyone in this band is having the same idea and putting it out with perfect sync and simplicity that all I can think is "yes" and nod to the beat Why go: the whammy guitar in the beginning is so calmly chaotic. And im noticing the bass has so much rest between its notes even though it sounds like their is always sound happening, way to play the rests. Gives it just the bit of intensity it needs. Lovr the soft punchyness of everything. Love the layered singing towards the end Black: this song coming after the previous song is perfect! Barely noticed it just felt so right. Its crazy that the tempo hasn't substantially changed but this is clearly a "slow song". "What was evetheiaiaiaaang"🤟. Im just now realizing the singing is like country twangy style, now curious how this would sound with just acoustic guitar. It would probably still sound amazing. Thinking about the chord progression now and I didnt even realize, but in the middle where it sounds nicely repetitive its just playing a 3 chord progression on top of what feels like should be a 4 chord giving it infinite vibes, how cool. The album cover is perfect. It's like all the song are written to make you reach up Jeremy: Good middle of the album song. Singer holds the long notes so well. What a simple yer interesting bass line, so hypnoticaly repetitive. Somehow they do repetition so right. Song starts to feel just a little long and stretched towards the end, but im sure live it would be the perfect amount of "i just don't want this moment to stop". The crawl at the end with the last guitar note👌 Oceans: mushing the brain, its getting hard to listen and not just let the music pass through me at this point. I just want to sit back and enjoy, nothing to critique Porch: he's doing the waka waka guitar but with his voice I swear! I love that he just embodies that. Rest of the song is great, I was lost in the sauce Garden:the rim shots are so spooky and the guitar creates the perfect tension. The the color and flavor just opens upon you so strong ratatouille style. Delish. Love the inside at the end, really highetens the expirience Deep: what a good semi chaotic intro. "Am hooked and for sure have to finish the song now". Release: nice waltz to finish her off, so robust and wide, like a planet, arm open wide.apply named. The two parter caught me off guard but im ok with a little encour haha Fantastic expirience an album. 5 starts.
I have always loved Eddie Vedder's voice. My generation's Jim Morrison. Ten is a genuine masterpiece and a cultural touchstone. Of its time but still completely listenable.
I love the singles, but the album cuts are awesome as well. Fantastic album!
Like this a lot, want to listen to it more often. Contains some of their greatest songs
Legendary album.
5. Great album!
I’ve been impatiently awaiting this sweet, sweet album that defined the soundtrack of my high school experience. Don’t wanna hear the PJ vs Nirvana dreck. Both bands and their high-water albums are era-defining.
Do I often understand what Eddie Vedder is singing? No. Do I care? Also no. I bought Pearl Jam's Rearview Mirror back in 2004 when it came out, but this was my first time listening to a whole Pearl Jam album. It's wild to me to take a look at the Billboard Hot 100 Singles from 1988-1992 and see the music that's on there. Pop music had pretty much taken over by 1992, with R&B, Hip Hop, and a few other smaller genres filling out the rest of the charts. Despite that, some of the best rock music of all time was being made in the early nineties as hair metal faded away and grunge music started to take over. As great as Nirvana was (Dave Grohl is one of my favorite musicians of all time), I'd prefer to listen to Pearl Jam any day. This album is stuffed to the brim with great songs: "Even Flow," "Jeremy," "Once," "Black," and my personal favorite, "Alive" are the standouts here, but "Garden" and "Deep" are just as good as well. The wailing guitars on "Alive" start off with a bang, building to one of the best guitar solos of all time. The drums crash at all the right moments, and Eddie Vedder's voice warbles and bellows in the most beautiful way possible. The lyrics here are a wild journey themselves too, telling the Oedipus-adjacent story of a man who learns the truth of his parentage. "Even Flow" has amazing guitar riffs as well, pouding your eardrums right out the gates. "Jeremy" is fantastic too, with Vedder's haunting vocals bringing a physical chill to the story of a young man who kills himself in front of his class. This album is absolutely fantastic from start to finish, and it's definitely going to be a part of my regular listening rotation. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to "Better Man" and sob into my pillow.
An all time classic, I still can’t believe the chutzpah of eddies vocal sprinklings and Jeff’s fret less bass at their young age. The confidence of youth.
Amazing album, every song brings it
Despite Pearl Jam being my 4th favorite out of the big 4 Grunge bands, I believe this might be their best album overall. I really enjoyed this one and I will eventually listen to all of their discography.
This a a solid 5 stars. A debut album by a future R&R Hall of Fame band (that's still touring stadiums), and it has (almost) all of their best songs on it. They created a sound that stuck out from the rest of the 90s grunge/pop, perfected it, and got an entire generation hooked - all in one album.
Riding on a massive wave of nostalgia that's a big ol' 5. It's a damn good album, though, so it probably deserves those top marks even without those warm and fuzzy late nineties memories adding to the mix. Fave track - well, literally more than three quarters of them are contenders - it's really only "Dirty Frank" that's definitely not a fave. Let's say "Even Flow" for this play through....
I feel very ashamed that it took me so long to ever listen to this album. For a long while it never interested me to listen to this album, but once I heard the song Even Flow being used on those memes of Jesus skateboarding, I gotta admit, it was a mother fucking banger. But still It still wasn't the push I needed. Then I said "screw it" and put it on and damn, this album really is as good as I heard people said it was. Besides Even Flow, I think my favorite song is Black. I've only heard it once but it's a song that I just immediately connected to because I have had similar thoughts. In the end, don't skip out on this album, it's fucking fantastic.
From the interestingly subtle opening moments to the epic finish that brings it full circle, this is one of the most easily remembered and well constructed debut albums of all time. Almost every single song is a banger that people are still buying fuck-off ticketmaster nosebleed seats for hundreds of dollars to belt out every single lyric perfectly from memory. With the albums following after especially Vs. and vitalogy, they hone their sound even more and become something truly worth listening to. That's not to say this album isn't worth it because it is. But it's not without it's faults. I feel like garden and deep aren't the most memorable songs and especially garden doesn't do anything the other songs already accomplished. It also sounds like it's flirting a little too closely to sounding like Christian rock music. But deep is still super fun just not a standout. The mixing also drowns out the instruments and adds a lot of reverb to the vocals which makes this sound like a live album at times. This has always drove me nuts over the years but it's hard to imagine it any other way now. But those things aside, this is a fantastic album. The lyricism and storytelling is so good, it's hard not to get lost in it and feel emotional one way or another. Stories of heartbreak and broken homes, addiction and other forms of suffering. Evenflow is an obvious slapper and it kicks ass, but Jeremy is easily the best track and it evolves and progresses so nicely, the writing is incredible and instantly sticks with you. The case could be made for this song being in the top 100 rock songs of all time easily. Also I love it when it sounds like he's saying suck big dick in evenflow it's so awesome. Score: 90 Art: 90 - iconic
Incredible, Amazing, Show Stopping. I have been listening to this album and its songs for over 30 years. This is my favorite band, any album from this to self titled has great music on it. This is not even my favorite PJ album, but of course this is an incredible debut and helped change the music scene. Fall 1991 was one of the best times in music, starting with this bad boy. A mixture of grunge, alternative and hard rock, it's not just for dads, there is something here for anyone. Eddie has such a distinct voice that is often mocked, but the raw emotion and storytelling you hear in it as well as the strong writing make the album a TEN. This is the music I can listen to a billion times and never grow tired, having it ingrained in my brain and sing parts of random songs multiple times a day. These guys have never stopped rocking or changed their message and I love them forever. Absolute Faves: Once, Jeremy, Oceans, Porch

Banger alert
Now here’s an album that gets the job done. Nothing but heavy hitters, this is the type of album that you expect to see on this type of list.
I mean, nobody can argue. The album 100% certifiably slaps. Banger after banger after banger. Even Flow truly makes me feel like I could hit a Christ Air off a quarter pipe from a 75ft drop in (I’ve never skateboarded a day in my life). I got no beef with Vedder. Easy 5/5.
FIVE STARS!!! Lot of bias in this album review, I’ll be the first to admit it, but how can you not love it? 1991 was such an important year for contemporary music, and this one is definitely on the Mt. Rushmore for that year. With this debut album, Pearl Jam paved a path for alternative music to make a splash into the mainstream music market. So many recognizable hits such as “Even Flow”, “Alive”, and “Jeremy” make this a very nostalgic listen. “Once” and “Oceans” are two legacy Pearl Jam tracks as well that live rent free in my mind. Lest I forget the most heart wrenching part of the album, “Black”. If you really listen to the lyrics and emotion that Vedder conveys, I truly think it is one of the songs where it’s impossible to listen to while not crying: “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky but why, why can’t it be mine?”. Fuck. Tough to sum up a blow like that any better, and we’ve all been there.
I was actually in a store deciding wether to buy this on vinyl or not. This is one of those albums I’ve heard so much I barely process it as music anymore, more just a series of sounds. Especially with a bunch of tracks being used for Rock Band I’m more thinking about the individual notes and structure. I hadn’t heard this whole thing through in at least 10 years. There really isn’t a lull, it’s maxed out all the way through.
I had this album (back when I collected CDs, as I did back then when this album was released) and listened to it a lot back in the early 90s. Because most of the music I had listened to and liked most in my youth is what we now call "classic rock," I think that played a big role in why I liked this album so much back then. It was more hard-edged and grungy than most of the rock I'd liked up until then, but not so much so that it wasn't accessible to me. It also was released at a time in my life when quite a few of the songs' lyrics resonate well with me. Musically, I was blown away by the band, especially Jeff Ament's bass and Mike McCready's and Stone Gossard's guitars. Eddie Vedder's voice is strong and outstanding and was perfect for their music. I probably overplayed their music because, after a few years, I stopped listening to them. Not their fault, just life and all that. I remember buying their next album and liking it enough, but things faded away and I moved on. I never felt like they weren't great or making cool art; I just didn't focus on them anymore. I had barely listened to them very much since then, so it was great to see this album pop up in the rotation. I definitely haven't given this album a full listen in what is now about 25 years or so. I was curious as it started how I'd respond to it. Glad I listened. Just some incredibly solid and superbly crafted rock music with lyrics that aren't juvenile, and absolutely stellar performances by all members of the band. Great energy, real depth, and overall really, really well done. Thanks, 1001 Albums project. You done did it again. :-)
I listen to this CD over and over and over. Till the point it's been quick a long time since I listen to it. Such a great album.
Huge record partially responsible for turning the tide of music. I still really like almost every song even after being saturated with it. It radiates rock and roll energy and was desperately needed at the time. Lyrically, musically, and vocally just a terrific record.
I never owned this album and knew every song. This was one of the biggest bands when I was in high school. Even flow and Alive are still stand out songs.
This is another, no doubt about it, 5 star album. Yet I’d still choose to listen to Nirvana almost anytime.
Yet another one of the absolute brilliant albums that came out in 1991. This is just an around great heavy rock album and one of the best from the 90’s. Eddie Vedder’s vocals are just outstanding a masterpiece.
Eh, not really much to say other than FUCK YEAH! This is one of the cornerstone albums of the 90’s. I still love it 30 years later, and regularly listen to these songs. The righteous solo in Alive never fails to bring out my air guitar and I widdlywiddlywahwah along with it! Tito can confirm.
Hi Mom
Pearl Jam rocks my ass. I wish I would have appreciated them more when I was younger. This album rules.
I don’t know why I’m just now listening to this album in full— what a masterpiece. Obviously I’ve heard their most popular songs over and over, but I’ve been missing out on the others! Release ended up being my favorite song. Absolutely beautiful way to finish out this album.
Awesome
Own on Vinyl
I feel like I'm a bit biased because Pearl Jam is my boss' favourite band of all time so I get a lot of them already on our Spotify blend One of the album's strengths is the interplay between the musicians, which creates a sound that is both raw and polished. Guitarist Mike McCready's solos are a particular highlight, adding a sense of urgency and intensity to the songs. Lyrically, the album deals with themes of alienation, loneliness, and the search for identity. Vedder's lyrics are often deeply personal and introspective, reflecting on his own experiences and emotions. In conclusion, Ten is a classic album that helped to define the sound of grunge and alternative rock in the early 1990s. Its influence can be heard in the music of many contemporary rock bands. If you're a fan of emotionally charged rock music, this album is a must-listen.
Once is probably the greatest intro song ever. Even Flow has Eddie do that slow/fast thing, it's always been a favourite. Alive is the anthem that all other bands wish they'd recorded. Why Go is frantic, with a desperate sound. Black is a quiet song, giving us a break before Jeremy arrives. What a song, even without the video. So much repression which then bursts out, mirroring that horrifying tale. Oceans is a sort of hippy Led Zep song, very much sounding like LZ III. Porch sounds like a live favourite, it's such a jam.
One of the Top 10 albums ever made period.
I am old enough to have owned this album on cassette. Though I haven't listened to it in its entirety since then. It's filled with a lot of heavy hitters. It's honestly such a good album and produced one of the most iconic music videos of the 90's.
Maybe it’s my bias in favor of rock and roll, but this album is and will always be one of my favorites. Its yet more evidence that the 90s were rich with music that has important impact on all music that came after. No notes.

Another album that I did not need to listen to to know what I was going to rate it. The density of bangers on this album is astounding. Kind of annoying that there are 11 songs on it, though. (I should really look up why it's called Ten.) Among the first in a movement that's very special to me, and full of tracks that I regularly belt at karaoke. I contemplated giving it a 4, but that felt wrong. Also, I still remember the first time I saw the unedited video for Jeremy when I was a kid (maybe post-Columbine? I can't remember for sure) and it kinda scared the shit out of me, and thinking back to that now, it's kind of wild that that video came out in 1991. Standouts: Once, Even Flow, Alive, Black, Jeremy
I have loved this record since it came out. When Grunge was happening, I was obsessed with Nirvana and Pearl Jam was too soft for me. Now, at 42, I still love me some Nirvana but Pearl Jam tends to get more spins at my home. This record is basically perfect. It's cohesive, it flows really well, and there isn't a dud to be found.
Arguably my favorite album from the 90's. Super good.
Ik moest me schamen dat ik dit album nog nooit op z'n hele luisterde. Wat een fantastische plaat. Voor het eerst ook eens in enkele teksten hiervan gedoken, en dat maakt het alleen maar beter
Absolutely stellar album - one of my all time favorites. Just so fully of energy, grit, and instant classic hits in "Jeremy", "Even Flow", "Alive", and "Black". This album makes you want to crank the speakers up to the max from the get go but I will say that the album does taper a bit towards the end. 10/10
5/5 100 Whatever. I’ve been a lifelong Pearl Jam fan at this point. I’ve been to 20+ shows. Everytime I hear Alive it’s a celebration.
I don’t know how I’ve never realised that Pearl Jam rocks pretty hard? Sick album Saved tracks: Once, Alive, Oceans, Garden
Literally my favorite album of all time. Five stars all day long
Bangers
Amazing early pop grunge. Hints of 80’s production with a completely different style from the 80’s. Super high energy, refreshing non conventional song forms that are reminiscent of jam bands at times. Very bluesy guitar parts, great mix of strat and Les Paul sounds that are complimentary and don’t clash in the mix. Big guitars are clear and not muddy or overbearing.
One of my all time favorite albums. Grew up with this one, and PJ was my favorite from the grunge scene. Hugely influential on my overall music tastes. Album absolutely holds up to this day, and one I listen to regularly. Great instrumentals. Heartfelt and often devastating lyrics that I didn't understand as a kid, but do now. Love Vedders vocal style, inspired a lot of copycats, but none can do it like he does.
Absolutely xlassix
I enjoyed it very much, the bass and guitar parts are toe curling, eddie vedders voice is god sent and the whole sound is very unique. when i found out this was a debut album my jaw hit the floor they sound so in sync with eachother a slay
Ten by Pearl Jam. Ten by Pearl Jam - "ну, как Нирвана, но полиричнее и с крутым вокалом".
It took me a while to warm to Pearl Jam when this was first released. Stupidly believing they were Johnny come latelys to the grunge scene, not knowing knowing the history of some of the member or the fact this came out a few weeks before Never mind but to a lot less fanfare. I was only after hearing Mother Love Bone that I fully began to appreciate them. Eddie Vedder's voice is perfect, gruff and melodic at the same time; Ament and McCready's playing straddling a perfect line between 70s stadium rock and garage punk
Lollapalooza
This is classic rock from the 90s, although it wasn't considered classic rock at the time. Along with Nevermind, these were the two albums that took grunge mainstream. While unconventional, the album rocks hard and is solid throughout. I always thought that Pearl Jam was an excellent example of a singer (Eddie Vedder) perfectly fitting the instrumentation. They sometimes reach too far on a debut, especially the lyrics, but it is awesome achievement.
Hard not to give this a 5. Debut album from one of the three foundational bands of Grunge/early 90's rock that saved us from Hair Metal (Nirvana and Soundgarden being the other two). Classic songs like "Jeremy", "alive", "Release" and "Even Flow" from this record cement it as being worthy of the list.
Not my favorite musically, but still a five. This is a really impressive first album with Pearl Jam debuting themselves to the public fully formed and at the top of their game. There is some really great guitar playing on here and Eddie Vedder's personality is pretty magnetic. Another album that could function as a greatest hits.
Brilliant album from start to finish. Grungy grooves and nothing but riffs.
Great songs amazing debut Oceans and black are highlights 9/10
Amongst the first to arrive to the nascent grunge movement, Ten was the beginning of Pearl Jam's ascent to a ongoing acknowledgment from supposedly opportunistic vultures to the natural successors of the classic rock icons they've always looked up to. From start to finish, the album refuses to let up with the intensity brought by Eddie Vedder's vocals and storytelling lyricism and the musical contributions of Stone Gossard, Mike McCready and others; lighting up a slow fuse that would soon ignite into one of the most ferocious and consequential of the 90s Seattle scene and beyond.
A barnstormer of an album front to back. Heavy but melodic guitars, pounding drums, and Eddie Vedder’s iconic growl combined with introspective lyrics make Ten a grunge classic and one of the best debuts of the 90s.
A quintessential 90’s rock album. While lumped in with the Seattle grunge bands I think it sounds more straight ahead rock and not as punk influenced as the grunge sound.
A masterpiece in any decade
Unleash the lion!
An all-time classic.
Before there was post-grunge, there was grunge.
Absolute bangers from front to back. Personal favorite is Why Go
Pearl Jam is my favorite band of all time. This is one of a few albums where I can pinpoint where my love of music started. Not one miss on the entire album and I don’t even think it’s their best album.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
A legendary album! An all time classic that deserves a 5 instantly. So song by song time. "Once" - A great grunge track that just rocks! "Even Flow" - This one speaks for itself. That intro riff is one any self respecting music fan knows from the first second. The one thing I have always wanted from this song was more bass in the mix. Other than that it is a perfect song. "Alive" - Another perfect song. I can't quite put it into words, but the song just speaks to you and it's impactful on many levels. Also a legendary guitar solo, one of the all time greats in an all time great song. "Why Go" - This song makes up for the bass that is missing on the first few tracks. Certainly a deeper cut on the album, but it is still is a good song. "Black" - For a grunge song from a grunge band it is just so melodic and beautiful. Vocally and lyrically it is also particularly gorgeous. If you close your eyes and let the song take you on a ride it is absolutely worth it. And good bass that sits too low in the mix. "Jeremy" - Another guitar intro that everybody should instantly recognize. I love where the bass sits in this song in addition to great guitar and drums. It is also lyrically complex and sad. "Oceans" - This is where we get to the more deep cut tracks. I don't have strong feelings either way on it really. The lyrics/vocal style take me out of it a little bit. Good instrumentation though. "Porch" - For a deeper cut on the album it is a great song. I think the more uptempo energy of it is a bit off-putting compared to the rest of the album. "Garden" - More good instrumentation with mediocre lyrics and vocals. It also contains a good guitar solo that I quite enjoyed. "Deep" - Not bad just by a decent margin the worst song on the album. "Release" - This is a good outro song. I love downtempo songs to end an album and this serves the job perfectly. Don't know that I love the hidden track though. All in all this is one of the all time great albums. The back half is slightly disappointing given just how great the front half is. The front half automatically solidifies it as a 5 star album though. I will always enjoy giving this album another listen.
This is a pure sentiment put in music.
It's been many years since I've listened to Ten. It's really a great album and for being a grunge album in the same era as Nirvana it has a different sound. Songs like Even Flow and Alive are true rock classics. Eddie Vedders singing style is unique and the words are barely comprehensible, which has been parodied to death, but I would say that it adds to Pearl Jam's sound that differentiate it from other bands.
this is one of my favorite albums ever since high school! i love every single track on it, but Alive is probably one of the top 10 songs of the 90s alone. the whole album, musically, is just such a perfect mix of grunge with more classic hard rock. and lyrics are great too - incredible storytelling on Jeremy and just pure emotion on Once and Black. i called out the biggest hits here but seriously there's not a single song i dont enjoy and i always come back to stuff like Ocean, Garden or Release Me. the only problem i have with this is that its such a great debut that they never really managed to top it or even come close to it. luckily, in the end Vedder went on to to find himself in more folky things such as the soundtrack to Into the wild. 5/5
Very very good
A decade-defining major debut from the Seattle legends. Top to bottom filled to the brim with all-time classics. The only real question is whether this is grunges finest moment or not?
All killer, no filler.
Classic
One of the best albums that's genuinely great from start to finish.
I find it hard to listen to this critically as it forms such a part of my teenage listening. Alive has to be one of the best songs ever recorded.
No extra listening needed! A true 5* classic.
Surprisingly, this took me two listens to get back into, but I can now confidently give this top marks. This and Alice in Chains' Dirt are my two favourite 90s grunge albums.
I was overwhelmed by this when it came out and it may be the album I have listened to the most. Still great in every sense.
One of the best ever. Amazing album all the way through. Mookie Blaylock though?
Really the best 90’s Hrunge album ever.
A Classic. Still listen to this regularly
What can I say, an absolute classic. This was first CD I ever bought. Listened to this front to back to many times to count. One of my all time favorite bands. Perfection.
I wouldn't call myself a Pearl Jam fan but know several of their songs. I had never listened to this album front to back. I now have listened to it 3 times. Best album we have been dealt so far.
I've listened to this album about 1000 times.
Top tier
First ever full listen. Amazing complete album with variety I wasn’t expecting.
Classic. Have owned in 3 formats, and still a good listen all the way through.
Every song on this album feels unique but consistent at the same time. The vocals always match the tone of the song perfectly. There's so many good build ups and the release is always well executed. My only complaint is that a few tracks just go a little longer than they need to.
5.5 One of the greatest of all time.
Iconisch album, even flow, alive en black zijn zo'n sterke nummers.
sterk werk met heerlijke classics
incredible album
Classic, Seminal 1990s album. Not one bad song on it.
Awesome album that brings back happy 90’s memories.
5/3 Edderd Vedderd
Grunge, 1991. Arguably in the top 3 of the greatest grunge records of all time with Nevermind by Nirvana and Superunknown by Soundgarden and one of the best debut albums ever both musically and commercially. It contains huge hits like "Alive", "Even Flow", "Black" and all the tracks are just amazing.
pearl jam are a weird one, they masquerade as grunge when the only thing remotely grunge about them is Seattle. they're surprisingly cheddar and their reputation is weirdly high considering the quality of their output. my conclusion for why they're so big is they sit in a void between a whole load of genres which probably means they get people fans from all of them. sort of grunge, fairly rock, sort of metal, sort of indie. that said for me their whole reputation lies on this album. i have listened to all of their albums as my mrs loves them, but this is by far and away the only one worth listening to.
My type of music - chill
Magnificent, one of the top albums of all time.
• I already knew Once, Even Flow, Alive, Black and Jeremy • Every song I didn’t already know is very good. • Every song was added to my main playlist • Release sounds a lot like Elderly Woman • The hidden track after Release is very cool sounding and very different from the rest of the album, though I wish it was its own track on Spotify for when I want to listen to Release on its own.
Love me some Pearl Jam. This album was boss.
A personal favourite. A grunge masterpiece full of standout tracks. Still remember getting goosebumps at a track the first time I heard the album.
Best debut album ever.. By the best live band of all times.
Never listened to a full pearl jam album before, but this was great
Wow! It’s been a minute since I’ve listened to this. Just incredible. “Once” is such a heavy track. It’s got the kind of hard rock operatics you hear on a metal album. Killer stuff. But this is more than hard rock. There’s so much passion and emotion in these songs. Pearl Jam isn’t just rocking out for the sake of rocking out (nothing wrong with that btw) — there’s an intensity of feeling, the intensity of life, that drives the energy of this music. Damn — “Deep” is such a wild track. After the mega hits (“Even Flow,” “Alive”), this might be my favorite. So intense. So good. I’ve listened to very little Pearl Jam in the past and revisiting this album is making me realize what a mistake that is. I’ll need to dive deeper for sure.
WHEW! Yes, an automatic 5/5 stars, fo'sho, both for the nostalgia cred and also for how many damn hits are on here. We have definitely watched many live shows (twice actually in person, mostly via Youtube) and Eddie Vedder will forever go down in history as the most energetic (and handsome) front man ever. I can't believe that this was their FIRST album! Freakin legendary.
Instant 5/5. One of my favorite records of all time, easily in my top 10. What a DEBUT! Just absolutely absurd how many hits are on this: - Even Flow - Alive - Black - Jeremy Even the non-huge radio hits are incredible, like: - Once - Why Go - Oceans - Porch - Garden (for real if you haven't listened to these you need to. "Porch" might be my favorite- the unplugged version is A+) It's arguably the best album by one of the best bands ever and easily one of the best rock albums of all time- all in my opinion.
Great album
This album is a giant bowl of "Oops all bangers"
Vooral goede tragere nummers (Release / Garden)
It feels overplayed, but thats just because its such a great fucking album that it cant help but be in your head all the time. One of the all time top albums of all time. Literally every single track is amazing - 5/5
Influential AF! Oceans, and Deep 🙌
