One of the greatest debuts of all time. You must hear that all the time, don't you? Well, typically people say that you an amazing album that just so happens to be a band's debut. But no, here we have the greatest introduction of the band that would shape rock n roll in the 90s. No other band of the era had such a consistent discography with each release just as solid as the last. Whereas Guns n Roses shaped hard rock from the late 80s, Pearl Jam took the genre into an entirely new direction, making way for the more alternative music to come. In fact, I don't think the rest of the grunge movement or even Nirvana would have picked up if not for radio and Mtv support for this album. I'm too young to know for sure, but older rock fans are always raving about Pearl Jam concerts more than any other, how they could extend songs and solos for like 10 minutes, and it's pretty clear by their music videos and audience that they were a leader in live performances. Their influence cannot be understated. Second only to Nirvana in the popularization of grunge culture. And it makes sense when you listen to their songs. The vocals are crisp and clear, with appropriately poetic lyrics to sing along to. Hell, even when I was 11 I knew Jeremy was about a boy killing someone in front of his class for revenge (although I didn't know it was himself until years later), and that just came from me listening to the song on the radio. Pearl Jam has the perfect mix of everything you could want out of rock songs: impactful vocal delivery, lyrics you can sing to, epic solos, incredible production (although I hear some complain about its rawness), and harmony between band members knowing exactly what to do and when. Album is full of hit after hit. Of course, the four signature songs are perfect in every way. But Pearl Jam isn't sticking by any formulas. The rest of the songs are amazing too. It's just such a shame they all come after the hits because many people won't give them much of a chance, thinking the best is over. "Oceans" is one of the more alternative songs, mellower yet like no other. Creates a dynamic contrast between the two sides of the album to lead back into the action of "Porch." The song "Garden" has this great solo that reminds me of 70s jam bands. I swear the more I listen to the second side, the more I fall in love with them. Even the supposedly weakest track "Deep" is an amazing blend between alternative and their harder grungier material about addiction. I love it when albums get the closing track right, so you can imagine my satisfaction "Release," followed by a bonus track continuation of the first part of the opening track.

In high school I routinely said Pearl Jam was my most hated band of all time. I was wrong. Pearl Jam are good and this album is very good. I think I just really hated that cover of Last Kiss.

The highs are spectacular but a lot of filler.

Every song is powerful, raw and hard hitting. Knowing it so well almost made me take the brilliance of this album for granted. Eddie is a force of nature.

Heard the first three tracks on it before, just not the album itself. Passed me by a bit in the end, but would happily listen again – I like Vedder's voice a lot.

I'd listened to this one in passing a couple of times but was never sure whether it had the makings of a varsity athlete. Listening to it 'properly' to it this time and it has swayed me. The first half especially is stellar and right up there in the 5* basket. The second half loses momentum slightly, though, and is the only thing keeping it from hitting the heights of full marks.

It's hard, regardless of how closely I listen, to separate my biases and snap impressions of grunge from this album, clocking in at a healthy length. It is unique in that its position in pop music history is clear. There are new elements not present in the preceding rock wave, and the inherited ones have the complexity dialed down and the loudness up. The guitars are in the driver's seat; I'm tempted to treat that as a strength. It is a bit repetitive, though, and from hair metal Pearl Jam also takes the notion that slowing things down is a good idea. The band seems unfairly singled out for malignment. They drift to the pop edge of their lane, but make something perfectly listenable and of some historical interest.

October 20, 2021 Pretty good! I liked "Alive".

Confession: this is one of my favourite albums. I can more or less sing it front to back. All killer no filler. As grunge-era records go, I prefer this to Nevermind. Don't @ me.

Classic album. I've cried to it, I've rocked out to it, I've been everything to this music because it was there for me as I shaped into who I am. Love this album

I wonder sometimes why they're associated so closely with grunge. They're not nearly so muddy and dark. Their music is emotional and definitely coherent but almost impressionistic, not least because you sometimes have no idea what he's mumbling. Anyway, this is nearly an hour of great riffs and strong writing. The production's a little dated, but there's a remaster from a few years back that just about fixes everything. 4.5 rounded up.

Can never quite get fully into Pearl Jam, but has their best known songs on there.

I had forgotten how good this album is. Used to listen to it all the time in the early 90s. Not only is the album 5 stars but just about every song is 5 stars.

The less cynical yet equally disillusioned counterpart to Nevermind, Ten is an undisputed pillar of grunge. At the end of the day, Eddie Vedder just wants to be Neil Young, but the times called for something with more of an edge, and on this record, Pearl Jam makes a hell of case for the music requiring it too, adding darker subject matter (it's pretty crazy to consider there were songs inspired by school shootings as early as '91) and breakneck performances to the kind of storytelling that's more commonly reserved for acoustic guitars and folk rock. The heavier stuff is what resonates with me most—the solo at the end of Alive easily trounces anything prior in the song—but even the record's slower, softer moments shine in large part due to Vedder's unique voice. There's not a lot of weak points here, with even the instrumentals serving well as bookends that don't feel particularly indulgent. It's simply a phenomenal record from top to bottom—okay, I don't like Oceans that much, but that one's not even three minutes long. Key Tracks: Once, Why Go, Deep

15. Ten - Pearl Jam. 11 Tracks Is this called Ten cos it's rated 10 out of 5? What an album! Don't think I have ever listened to it sober before. What an album! Have I said that before? Wow. A new bar has been set against which all others will be judged. Mind-blowing! 5/5

I've never been big on grunge and had only had limited exposure to Pearl Jam. This album didn't really change my views, I neither loved nor hated it. It's just... Ok. I honestly found the songs a bit too long and a bit too samey. Porch was the standout track that I didn't already know that I saved as a favourite. Shorter and more musically interesting to me. It might be a great album but a couple of repeat plays was enough. I doubt I'll feel the need to listen to this in full again.

Crazy how many classic songs are on here. I don't really care for the deeper cuts though.

Black is my favorite track from the album. Probably an all time top 10.

Hard to give this any lower than a 4. It would be a straight 4 compared to Alice in Chains as a 4.5. Hugely important grunge milestone, though (while unfair to it) was so overplayed that I can't help but be a little numb to it.

This album is amazing from start to finish. Obviously, Pearl Jam have been copied to death and it's that aspect that I dislike in many copy cat acts. Noone can replicate their authentic sound, which is full ,heavy and gritty.

The singers voice is the same as the one me and my friend put on when we're making up fake shit north American songs. It is grating. Levels all turned up to 10 for everything also took away a lot from the album. It just dulled everything. Has some redeeming features. They're all clearly competent musicians, but to me it came across as emo without any edge.

i'm sure i would've liked this more at the time if it hadn't been for the fan club. not wanting to be associated with assholes kept me from giving this much of a chance back then - i'd never listened to the whole thing, for example - although i knew about half the tracks. which is kind of amazing, really: that's a lot of tracks getting a lot of airplay for one album. eddie's voice is as awesome as i remember, and i still love the floating guitar and fuzzy bass. but christ, for all that, just the memory of a thousand shitheads wearing pearl jam shirts and backwards baseball caps, man...dickheads, (almost) all of 'em.

Pretty good album. Some metal flourishes I could do without, but there's no denying Eddie Vedder's talents as a singer. Impressive vocals. I thought I didn't "know" Pearl Jam but I was shocked how many songs I was familiar with and impressed by; Black was the most impressive song for me and I also ery much liked Release. This almost felt like greatest hits album. 4 🌟

El poder de Even flow, Alive y Jeremy es increíble, Black es una poesía hermosa y triste. Las letras están bien trabajadas, cuentan historias y llega a quien las escucha. Es el primer disco que me toca escuchar de los 1001 que ya había escuchado completo y que estoy totalmente de acuerdo que esté en este listado.

High school flashbacks. Hard to imagine that era without this album and band. Extremely influential and still kicks ass to this day. Easily one of the top albums on this whole list in terms of “must hear”

Packed full of cracking songs.

One of rocks greatest debut albums. Still sounds as good as it did the day I got it at makin tracks and sat on the bus home blown away. It has no weaknesses and it’s easy to say the big songs are out of the way early and it drops off. If anything it gets better especially once we get Alive out of the way. Give me Porch or Garden anytime over it. And then there’s Black - one of the finest “love” songs ever written in my mind. A stone cold classic album and testament as to why this band remains bigger than ever 30 years later.

Had not heard this album by the band. The usual hallmarks of the band are there, but maybe not as refined as their later work.

Not my type of music necessarily but I see the appeal!

Grabbed me at times with some unexpectedly Indian (to my ear at least) musical stylings and there are a couple of stand-out songs but after several listens large tracts made no particular impression.

Couple good songs, but Pearl Jam have always felt never more than safe and middle of the road for me.

Oh what a waste of time. Uninspired Jam tunes, hated it. Don‘t expect to find a pearl.

You know, I kinda dig it. This is one of the foundational 90s albums with some iconic songs. Vedder has a unique voice but the grungy grime of the guitars and beats are classic.

I love Vs. and Vitalogy, which makes me think perhaps the wrong Pearl Jam album is on the list. I know the album very well, and revisiting it should tell whether it's a 4 or 5. This holds up incredibly well. If you don't let some of the heavy subject matter get to you, this will always be an enjoyable listen. Bonus points: Sent me on a deep dive through the heap of incredible live Pearl Jam albums (seriously, I stopped counting, there were so many in Spotify alone). Minus point: Realizing my favorite Pearl Jam songs aren't on this album. Actual rating is 4.5.

Already listened to this one today before generating the album, what are the odds! very fun listen with some amazing hits, but some songs are a little forgettable.

Awesome album.

I've heard some of these songs before, but not many. The songs are mostly laid back and melancholy, a relatively easy listen despite the off-beat and discordant undertones.

A fantastic hard rock journey. It's easy to see why this album but Pearl Jam on the map. Haven't listened to Even Flow since I played it on Guitar Hero when I was a kid, but the song is still magical.

Ah yes Pearl Jam. I've tried many times but their anthemic grunge style has just never clicked for me. One of those bands I just can't seem to ever get engaged with and almost always find myself zoning out when listening to them. Can't really express exactly why either but alas sometimes music just boils down to connection and I just don't connect here even if I can appreciate the artistry.

дамы и господа, позвольте представить самый переоценённый альбом в истории, блаблабла Я без понятия, кому эта уныль кажется чем-то интересным. Вкупе с описаниями с википедии по типу «оказал огромное влияние на умы молодёжи», «самый влиятельный альбом гранжа» и «величайший альбом 90-х» — у меня ощущение, что я попал в шоу Трумана, и надо мной вершится один бесконечный розыгрыш. Ой, правда, величайший альбом 90-х? Тогда какого хуя каждая вторая группа в 90-х звучала как Нирвана, а это говно даже особо копировать никто не стал? Не, наверняка там влияние оказал на многих, но только многие покивали, отложили Перл Джем на полку, взяли гитары и стали делать в десять раз более интересное музло. Ну окей, хуй с ней с переоценкой. Что по музыкальной сути? А по музыкальной сути это блять просто пустышка, это один из самых необязательных альбомов, что я вообще слышал. Начинается, впрочем, он с лучшей песни, поэтому я могу поверить, что сначала всё это кажется чем-то интригующим. Даже скрим прикольный в куплет завезли. Потом Even Flow — в целом тоже норм, но уже как-то в непонятках находишься. В основном из-за одной мысли: это реально должно так звучать? Ибо звучание этого альбома — это просто вырвиушная хуйня, даже для труъ-raw-гранжа и всякого такого. Дело не в сырости, а в том, что тон у гитар на некоторых песнях просто омерзительный. Больше всего это слышно, конечно, на песне Porch — правая гитара настолько высокочастотная и настолько громко выведена в миксе, что у меня буквально заложило ухо с неё и появился неприятный писк. Но и в остальных дела ненамного лучше. Почти каждая песня — это какая-то проверка на прочность, сколько ты сможешь вытерпеть блеклых безвкусных гитарных запилов без единого — единого блять — цепляющего риффа. Реально, кто-то заполнил отсюда хоть одну не вокальную мелодию? А вокальную, кстати? Потому что Эдди Веддер не только ужасный вокалист (здесь я могу списать на вкусовщину, ибо вот эти рычащие рокенролльные голоса мне никогда не нравились), но и никакой композитор. Ну ладно, припев Once вроде выделяется как нечто сформировавшееся. Ну ладно, припев Even Flow вроде обладает какой-то попсовой ноткой. Ну лаааадно, припев Garden выделяется среди прочей дисторшновой жижи. Но кроме этого я вообще нихуя вычленить не могу. Это какое-то абсолютно лишённое вкуса, запаха и ГМО рычание на паре нот, поданное настолько неинтересно, насколько я могу себе представить. Кстати насчет второй и последней интересной фишки после второго припева Once. Это вокальные распевки в Black. Не сказал бы, что это нечто гениальное, но в какой-то момент поймал себя на мысли, что в целом ведь сам мог бы так же где-то сделать. Посему идея-то классная. Только длится раза в два дольше, чем должна бы, чтобы не надоедать и не портить настроение. Но окей, два хайлайта у альбома есть. К счастью, я не из тех, кто ебенит альбомам пятёру за две нормальные песни (а тем более за два нормальных отрывка), поэтому эта унылая коренролловая параша получает 4/10 и лучше бы ей больше мне на глаза не показываться.

Думаю, этот альбом для меня – светлое лицо 90-ых. Всякие Рванины, Оазисы, Радиохэды и Ню-митольная шляпа – дело, местами, хорошее, но или несёт в себе черты некоторого упадка или недостаточно сильная. А тут оригинальный оптимистичный яркий саунд. Скачал я его в универские годы не помню из-за чего, толи из-за наличия в топе 200 Metal Hammer, толи когда перебирал пятёрки на Allmusic. И прям сразу пропёрся, задавшись вопросом, а хули остальной гранж или ущербный, или кринжовый. Лан, по трекам: 1) Once – сильные гитарные и вокальные партии, мощный припев, тупо хит. 2) Even Flow – впервые наткнувшись в одной из GH, не пропёрся, подумал, очередная бесхребетная инди-поделка. Но в рамках альбома трек неплохо раскрывается, партии довольно интересные, подчёркивают вокальную, которая в куплетах хоть и кажется монотонной, но не надоедает. 3) Alive продолжает тенденцию к чилу. Делает это весьма ленивым образом, через менее внятные куплеты Led Zeppelin стайл и припев с повторяющейся строкой. Но в целом делает, почилить можно в кайф. 4) Why Go пытается вернуться к драйву, сохраняя формулу прошлого трека. Разве что гитарные партии яркие добавляя. Также не то, чтобы сильный трек, но атмосферу держит. 5) Black ну тупо шедевр. То, как я хотел бы REM слышать, и вроде бы слышу, но не часто. Яркие развивающиеся мотивы, лаконичные партии, дополняющие друг друга, пронимающий припев. Вокалёр тащит, и при этом не затеняет инструментал. Бэк-вокальные партии просто идеально вписываются, на уровне электрической версии Дурачка у Опизденевших. 6) Jeremy возвращается к предыдущей формуле. Но в её случае припев вышел более ярким, повторение строки не душит, а воспринимается за должное. Также условный минимализм разбавляется развитием всех партий, добавлением интересных бэков, в итоге складывая отличный трек. 7) Oceans тянет в лирику. И вполне кайфовую. Атмосферная весчь, прям веет какими-то океянами, полётами и мечтами всякими. Напрягли разве что странные смены тональности в моментах, но трек отличный. 8) Porch на контрасте драйву завозит мальца. Гитарные соло интересные, веют олдскулом таким, вокальные партии звёзд с неба не хватают, но атмосферу держат. 9) Garden вновь формулу возвращает, ситуация схожа с Jeremy, разве что контраст внутри трека ещё сильнее, куплеты ещё более аморфные и тихие, припев ещё более яркий, громкий и мощный. Второй куплет переходит в кайфовые бриджи и соло, потом припев, потом снова соло, в общем, прогрессивные нотки даже, одобряем. 10) Deep драйв довозит, но по стандартной формуле. Приятный трек в целом. 11) Release возвращается к атмосфере Oceans. В целом, атмосферу держит, но закрывашку хотелось бы по яркости сопоставимую с открывашкой. Или чтоб глубины залипательной завезли побольше. А так просто хороший трек с отличными вокальными партиями. Да, если по элементам разбирать, то картина слагается не то, чтобы уверенная, яркие моменты чередуются с более слабыми вещами. Но мы на альбом же смотрим. А альбом – это такая плотно набитая банка густой атмосферы и настроения, интересного звука. Которые, в более особо нигде и не встречаются. Даже в дискографии Pearl Jam, которую дальше вообще слушать не смог. Посему альбом стал важным опытом и может быть таковым для многих.

This album helped Pearl Jam find their voice and take the grunge genre mainstream. While this album leans more towards Rock and Nirvana's efforts toward Alternative, this album is loaded with attention to detail and groundbreaking subject matter. This ground-breaking effort has proven to be a lasting force.

Eddie Vedder's impressionistic lyrics often make their greatest impact through the passionate commitment of his delivery rather than concrete meaning. His voice had a highly distinctive timbre that perfectly fit the album's warm, rich sound, and that's part of the key -- no matter how cathartic Ten's tersely titled songs got, they were never abrasive enough to affect the album's accessibility. Ten also benefited from a long gestation period, during which the band honed the material into this tightly focused form; the result is a flawlessly crafted hard rock masterpiece.

Harder rock than I usually listen to, but I like Eddie Vedder's voice. Good stuff. My band plays Alive, so I was familiar with that one. Not enough variety in the tunes for me. "Release", though, is a nice change of pace.

They were never really my jam (see what I did there?) but it wasn’t terrible to listen to, especially with some familiar songs on this album.

Having never been a fan of PJ (or grunge), I have to say that this was better than I was expecting. Eddy Vedder's voice can grate on you after a while, but the song writing is good, as shown by the indie radio play they get, and there's even a decent guitar solo or two. As Sue says, they're ok if you don't have to listen to them for too long, which IMO, is true of many bands.

Pearl Jam ist für mich das Paradebeispiel dafür, wie man teils sehr gutes Songwriting durch die Verpackung versauen kann: Vedders jaulende Werther-Schlenker, die Schwanzgitarrensoli und ein unterirdisches, richtig mieses Artwork dieser Platte drücken das Ganze für mich auf ein Nebengleis der 90er.

I am so biased. Lange Jahre hab ich mein Umfeld mit Pearl Jam genervt, bin aufgrund des nie genossenen Live Erlebnisses entsprechenden bootlegs nachgejagt (über diesen Weg den Namen Neil Young das erste Mal wahrgenommen) - ähnlich fanatisch war ich nur noch bei Faith No More. Nun ist dieses Debüt super wichtig und doch nicht mein liebstes Album, auch wenn es mich bis knapp vor die Jahrtausendwende begleitete. Als Grunge Keimzelle hat die Textur eine Datiertheit, die man so auch bei Alice in Chains, frühen Stone Temple Pilots oder Soundgarden erkennt - wie viel zeitloser dagegen Nirvana wirkt, ist für mich heute Tatsache, aber damals war’s wichtiger den Anfang von „Alive“ auf der Gitarre zu lernen oder in einem der örtlichen Platten Läden die „Hunger Strike“ Single zu ergattern. Diese Jugendzimmer Gefühle herauf zu beschwören ist pure Magie; überhaupt assoziiere ich 1001 Gerüche: der rote Clio meiner Mutter, die komische Salbe, die mich im Sommer von einer Hautflechte befreien sollte und dabei wie angeschmortes Plastik stank, die warmgelaufene Mega Drive Konsole (gebraucht von einem starken Raucher in Wanne-Eickel gekauft), diese irre quietsch knallig süßen „Parfums“ der Mädchen auf der Huckarder Kirmes. Geblieben ist, den Pathos eines Songs wie „Black“ dem „Jeremy“ Hit vorzuziehen, Neil Young besser kennen gelernt zu haben und das kitzelige Gefühl Versuch zu ergründen, warum mich Leben und Wirken von Vedder, Gossard und Co. derart in ihren Bann gezogen hat. 4.1

Um direkt mal ganz ehrlich einzusteigen: glaube, ich hab dies Album gerade zum ersten Mal ganz gehört. Irgendwas an denen hat damals meinen Nerv nicht richtig getroffen (insbesondere Vedders Stimme nicht, und soundmäßig war mir die Mudhoney/Dirtpunk-Seite definitiv lieber als die Hardrock-/Muckerfraktion mit zB Soundgarden und denen hier). FF zu 30 Jahre später: ziemlich super plötzlich, oder? Erste zwei Drittel jedenfalls: Bass federt luftig, die Muckergitarren perlen ja quasi, und wirklich perfekte Drumsonds. Top-Produktion auch, und sogar Eddies Stimme mag ich plötzlich (auf Kopfhörer)! Insofern kann ich (für meine Vorurteile) also schon fast von Glück reden dass sich das im letzten Drittel irgendwann ein bisschen zieht und verliert, sonst wäre vielleicht sogar glatte Note notwendig geworden. So aber: sehr anständige 3,8. Und schön, endlich mal wieder positiv wrong geproved zu werden!

Another album with some classic hits that I never listened to fully. I enjoyed rocking out in the car to this one. Even Flow and Alive are probably my two favorite Pearl Jam songs so this album was a win regardless. I know Jeremy is a big one too but it never caught on with me. Very iconic cover but I wonder what they are reaching for? Ten feet?

This reminds me so much of Darren. wild and thoughtful, occassionally way too obtuse for me to get it

One of my favorite albums ever, Pearl Jam at its very best--they were young and inspiration was fresh. I go back to this album every now and then and never get tired of it.

A bit of a classic here. I’ve always loved Eddie Vedder’s voice, even if as a joke. This is just a cool rock band, seemingly lost in time. They rocked in the ‘90s for sure, but I wonder if they would’ve rocked even harder in decades prior. Some of their best songs on here too, so great album choice. Favorite tracks: Jeremy, Even Flow, Alive, Garden, Black. Album art: Borderline pathetic. This seems like a “greatest hits” parody cover. I actually thought this was a greatest hits when I saw it, it’s so lazy and lame. Good thing the music’s good. 4/5

Very nice

First CD I ever owned. Got it for Christmas 1991 - which was the same date that I got my first CD player / stereo. I was 13 years and this played in my room more or less constantly for well over a year. A seminal album in rock n' roll - along with Nirvana's Nevermind, probably THE defining album of the Seattle scene / grunge movement. And, amazingly, it has aged extremely well.

Ehhh. Not the best Seattle band. Thought it was ass for quite a while, but came around to making it two stars by the end. Not really made for the modern streaming world or even just non-live performances.

4 superb grunge songs and a bunch of other unfocused tracks that make Pearl Jam one of the weaker bands in grunge's main staple.

I liked this album a lot more than I thought I would. It was very angsty but it felt so deep and meaningful also. It's definite a super intense album but it really resonated with me.

Guitars sound great but this old man yelling really does not 💀💀💀 🦆🦆 I just wish this man could sing so I could actually enjoy this 😭 The actual music/instruments are really good though, just being ruined! Faves - Even Flow, Why Go, Porch No songs saved or added to playlists Overall - could be a solid rock album, if only someone else sang on it 😭 Would I check out their other music - no Rating 2/5 (the vocals COMPLETELY ruined this for me)

Many classics here, Black and Jeremy are 2 of the best songs of the 90s. It lulls a bit towards the end, but thats not necessarily a bad thing given its explosive middle.

LOL just yesterday I was listening to this and wondered if it was on this list, and if so when it would come up. one of the best albums of all time 5/5.

Nostalgia was nice, but listening to the whole album got whiny and old
