Ten

Since I started this I must have listened to 150 different "American Rock Group" albums and honestly, I'd struggle to tell the difference between any of them. This album? Just the latest addition to the list of yawn. (Love their activism btw but that's not what I'm here for!)

Eh, just okay. I know that this album really defined a genre/era but going back now seems so dated. They really created a new sound and they get props for that but coming back in 2023 does not excite the way I would have hoped.

When I listened to Ten for the first time about a year ago, I was furious. Because after years of listening to my father blather about witnessing Pearl Jam rehearse in a dingy Seattle warehouse before seeing them perform that night in the "best concert I've ever been to", I expected my socks to be violently yanked off my feet and yossed into a different dimension. But naur. The very second "Release" ended, I said out loud in the Lower Level of W.E.B Du Bois library, "THIS? This is what's got everyone's knickers in a knot?" And thus marked the beginning of my descent into an anti-Pearl Jam ethos, because holy moly it was so boring and so unextraordinary. I truly couldn't come up with a reason as to how they set themselves apart from the rest of the emo-grunge-punk garbage that we all know I love so much. A year later, after taking some time to myself to really explore and attune my ear to substantial music, my sentiments have only barely budged. I really wanted to give this a 1 for my initial sheer disappointment, but it's not atrocious enough to relegate that from me. I still don't get it though.

Eddie Vedder sucks at singing and it drags the whole album down. There, I said it. I always hated his moan in the singles on the radio, but I hate his screaming even more. This would be maybe a 3 or 4 without him, but he takes it down to a 2. Just know that just because I hate Pearl Jam doesn’t mean I hate grunge as a whole.

Winstop used to love Pearl Jam, so I tried a bit to get into them when I was at school but could never quite manage it. As per 25 years ago, I don't mind this, but it doesn't grab or excite me. Eddie Vedder seems a nice guy and has a distinctive voice, but I think grunge just isn't for me. It's perhaps a little too gloomy and lacking in joy or complexity of emotion. I once wrote that Nirvana embodied the punk side of grunge while Alice in Chains embodied the metal side of grunge. If we're to chop things up like this, then Pearl Jam is the hard rock side of grunge. I have a soft spot for Even Flow because of Guitar Hero 3 and rocking out to it as a kid, though I decisively do not have a soft spot for Alive despite playing it in Rock Band 2, probably because Alive meanders along and struggles to be captivating at any point before the solo. This embodies much of Pearl Jam's songwriting, particularly on the point that most of their songs are not interesting enough to warrant recording. Sure, they make some grungy noises and people like that, but if we were to strip it down to it's basics I think we would lose a lot of the appeal in Pearl Jam. This contrasts with Nirvana and their MTV Unplugged set, which proves that their songs were still incredible even without the distortion. I also don't like Eddie Vedder's voice. I think that's a sticking point for a lot of people who also don't like Pearl Jam. Vedder's voice is less of a non-starter for me here, but on song like Last Kiss it makes me wish the band had broken up shortly after Ten released. He sings with such confidence for a man with marbles in his mouth. Ten gets a lot less memorable after Jeremy. Nothing wrong with frontloading your album, but it goes to show how much of your album is truly worth people's time. Don't bother.

Respect it. Had a couple of alright songs. Not my cuppa Tea. Singer sounds like a goat sometimes hahaha.

Très monotone. Après deux écoutes rien ne s'est vraiment détaché. Peut être "Alive". Sinon j'ai l'impression d'avoir entendu 15 fois les mêmes chansons, plutôt bien jouées et chantées, mais sans grand intérêt pour moi.

I understand why this is such an important, popular album, but it isn’t for me. I’ve never been able to get past Eddie Vedder’s voice, which is like nails on a chalkboard to me.

It’s just generic rock and roll. It sounds exactly as you’d expect. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it certainly is cut and dried. It’s nothing special and pretty boring, but if you’re into the aforementioned generic rock and roll sound then to each their own. Favorite Track: Even Flow

I just wanted to listen to My Bloody Valentine or Nirvana after Ten. Sorry, Pearl Jam. I'm remembering why I never got into you, even back in high school when I thought it was very ~important~ to listen to "the canon" albums, which, much like these albums so far, were mostly rock albums by white guys (or at least what I discovered on music blogs in the early '10s and Reddit). Pearl Jam, I think your songs sound the same. Well most of them... I liked the intro and outro songs on this album, mostly because they felt different. I really could feel the concert lights rising and dimming with each. The outro song, Release's, bass line transition was ethereal. But all in all... Ten made me want the grungy, mystical guitar sound of Loveless and the lyrical intensity of Nevermind instead of Pearl Jam's version of both. Yeah... don't know why I never could get into Pearl Jam. There are great guitar shredding moments, of course, which I did appreciate. I recognize this as a good album. Just not my cup of tea. I'm sorry, Eddie Vedder, I think your voice might just annoy me.

Small amounts of Pearl Jam are fine - and by small amounts I mean a single song, not a whole album. It lacks interest for me, plus too many "look how many notes I can play" guitar licks.

Wow most of these songs were about 2 mins too long, some too repetitive and just a bit cringe really. Not my bag. Luke detested it!

23rd March 2022 Listened in the office on a sunny day! Quiet evening, watched the Adam project on the last day of the juice cleanse. Not bad, but doesn't ever hit the heights of Yellow Leadbetter for me. 2.5 if I could. Reminds me of Andy.

I'm familiar with Pearl Jam even though they aren't an artist I play on the regular. I think I've understood why i'm not really a Pearl Jam listening, after the music played through their songs, I didn't realise they were all different..I actually thought it was just one massive track rather than individual songs.

Didn't listen this time, but I remember only really liking Alive and the song about Jeremy from past listens...

First time of Listening and not a fan when I started. But can see some merit in the lyrical content of the album, but the music for me is standard late 70's-80's-90's guitar based middle-heavy rock. Not to my taste but can see why a new generation of Rock fans were drawn to Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam. "Release" is my favourite on the album. Not in my collection to be totally honest. But I suppose I can see why it is here.

I don’t know this, other than Alive. To me the sound is a lot more anthemic stadium rock than grunge, the lyrics are grungey though & Eddie Vedder does have a good voice for that though. It’s not my cup of tea, but it is well done.

This sounds like the same song over and over again. I enjoyed Even Flow, but nothing else (no, not even Alive, fight me).

Oof, this one didn't do much for me. I acknowledge it's a good album, it was just VERY much not for me. Fave track: Even Flow, I guess?

grunge muy lento

Have never listened to a Pearl Jam album. Sat down and listened to the whole album all the way through while writing this. 1. Once 3:51 - I didn't really like how Eddie Vedder's voice hit me on this track, which ruined the song for me. 2. Even Flow 4:52 - This song brings me back to my guitar hero days. Good song with a nice personal nostalgia bonus. 3. Alive 5:40 - This song has been on the radio for 30 years straight which is a turn off, but I gave it a chance and was impressed by the guitar solo at the end. Still won't look forward to hearing this song on the radio for another 30 years though. 4. Why Go 3:20 - Interesting guitar rift which the song is built around for an otherwise uninteresting song. 5. Black 5:42 - Placed well in the album for a slow down of tempo. Was writing that this was my second favorite song so far after Even Flow but then the ending the song came on. 6. Jeremy 5:18 - Alright song. also has annoying ending. 7. Oceans 2:41 - Good variety of sound, another slower tempo song. Pretty good. 8. Porch 3:30 - Not a bad song. Continues the trend of just repeating the same thing over and over at the end of the track for 30 seconds. Just end the song bro. 9. Garden 4:58 - Intro into the main body of the song was cool, and like the transition back for the interlude. Might be my favorite song on the album. Definitely the most interesting track. 10. Deep 4:18 - Not a great track. Interlude is the best part but the main guitar rift is too bad to save. 11. Release 9:06 - Fuck, a nine minute song to end the album. You're really going to do me like this Pearl Jam? Slow but a decent build up. Actually turned out decent. Experimental vibe to the song which I am not really into personally but I get it. Not bad. Album as a whole was an interesting listen. It does a good job of keeping the variety while feeling like a cohesive album. That being said nothing really grabbed me and made me want to listen to it again. The only song I'm going to add to my library will be Even Flow because of the nostalgia. Score 2.5/5 rounded down to a 2/5.

It's hard, regardless of how closely I listen, to separate my biases and snap impressions of grunge from this album, clocking in at a healthy length. It is unique in that its position in pop music history is clear. There are new elements not present in the preceding rock wave, and the inherited ones have the complexity dialed down and the loudness up. The guitars are in the driver's seat; I'm tempted to treat that as a strength. It is a bit repetitive, though, and from hair metal Pearl Jam also takes the notion that slowing things down is a good idea. The band seems unfairly singled out for malignment. They drift to the pop edge of their lane, but make something perfectly listenable and of some historical interest.

The singers voice is the same as the one me and my friend put on when we're making up fake shit north American songs. It is grating. Levels all turned up to 10 for everything also took away a lot from the album. It just dulled everything. Has some redeeming features. They're all clearly competent musicians, but to me it came across as emo without any edge.

I was never a big fan of Pearl Jam. Just ok. 2.5 stars.

Вкупе с описаниями с википедии по типу «оказал огромное влияние на умы молодёжи», «самый влиятельный альбом гранжа» и «величайший альбом 90-х» — у меня ощущение, что я попал в шоу Трумана, и надо мной вершится один бесконечный розыгрыш. Ой, правда, величайший альбом 90-х? Тогда какого хуя каждая вторая группа в 90-х звучала как Нирвана, а это говно даже особо копировать никто не стал? Не, наверняка там влияние оказал на многих, но только многие покивали, отложили Перл Джем на полку, взяли гитары и стали делать в десять раз более интересное музло. Ну окей, хуй с ней с переоценкой. Что по музыкальной сути? А по музыкальной сути это блять просто пустышка, это один из самых необязательных альбомов, что я вообще слышал. Начинается, впрочем, он с лучшей песни, поэтому я могу поверить, что сначала всё это кажется чем-то интригующим. Даже скрим прикольный в куплет завезли. Потом Even Flow — в целом тоже норм, но уже как-то в непонятках находишься. В основном из-за одной мысли: это реально должно так звучать? Ибо звучание этого альбома — это просто вырвиушная хуйня, даже для труъ-raw-гранжа и всякого такого. Дело не в сырости, а в том, что тон у гитар на некоторых песнях просто омерзительный. Больше всего это слышно, конечно, на песне Porch — правая гитара настолько высокочастотная и настолько громко выведена в миксе, что у меня буквально заложило ухо с неё и появился неприятный писк. Но и в остальных дела ненамного лучше. Почти каждая песня — это какая-то проверка на прочность, сколько ты сможешь вытерпеть блеклых безвкусных гитарных запилов без единого — единого блять — цепляющего риффа. Реально, кто-то заполнил отсюда хоть одну не вокальную мелодию? А вокальную, кстати? Потому что Эдди Веддер не только ужасный вокалист (здесь я могу списать на вкусовщину, ибо вот эти рычащие рокенролльные голоса мне никогда не нравились), но и никакой композитор. Ну ладно, припев Once вроде выделяется как нечто сформировавшееся. Ну ладно, припев Even Flow вроде обладает какой-то попсовой ноткой. Ну лаааадно, припев Garden выделяется среди прочей дисторшновой жижи. Но кроме этого я вообще нихуя вычленить не могу. Это какое-то абсолютно лишённое вкуса, запаха и ГМО рычание на паре нот, поданное настолько неинтересно, насколько я могу себе представить. Кстати насчет второй и последней интересной фишки после второго припева Once. Это вокальные распевки в Black. Не сказал бы, что это нечто гениальное, но в какой-то момент поймал себя на мысли, что в целом ведь сам мог бы так же где-то сделать. Посему идея-то классная. Только длится раза в два дольше, чем должна бы, чтобы не надоедать и не портить настроение. Но окей, два хайлайта у альбома есть. К счастью, я не из тех, кто ебенит альбомам пятёру за две нормальные песни (а тем более за два нормальных отрывка), поэтому эта унылая коренролловая параша получает 4/10 и лучше бы ей больше мне на глаза не показываться.

The problem with Pearl Jam isn’t that they aren’t talented for me. The issue stems from the boring nature of the compositions and vocals. This has not aged well and while there is artistic intention for me I do not resonate with this at all. Lyrically it’s just so so so growler and feels like more of a chore to actually listen to. It takes from all sorts of styles without even truly exploring any of them deeply. Let’s take the most popular song it’s a hair metal tribute I mean you can literally hear the guitarist sliding on the strings that’s how into it they are. Yet the vocals emotional core feels off and also I have no idea what the lyrics are and that is not a knock on the band it’s just annoying. It’s not about what they are saying it’s about how you’re saying it and Pearl Jam tonality just sounds like a guy rushing through a story and pretending to know more than he does. Alive is another example chorus so uninspired to me. The emotional depth to these songs just aren’t there and it feels more like caricature than actual art. I think this is a good example of music not made for me. It’s less about it being iconic and more about this being another band that lives off the legacy of others that didn’t really add much but mimicry

When I was a kid, my parents loved Pearl Jam. I don't know which albums they had, but I heard many of the tracks on this one specifically a ton as a kid. I always remember making fun of the singer and how silly he sounded. "Wait until you get older," they would tell me. "You'll appreciate it one day." Today I am older and I am listening to this album... Nah this singer still sounds fucking stupid. In theory, I should like the songs, but somewhere around Jeremy I just burst out laughing every time this dude made some new weird noise, strung together some insane unpronounceable chain of words, or held the same word for an extended period of time. It turns out that I just knew what I liked as a kid.

I couldn’t understand why this band got so much air time back in the 90’s and I understand even less why this hasn’t been buried in reviews deriding it as dad rock. How is this album within spitting distance of a 4 star average? This man has some of the worst vocals in the history of recorded music. Folks, what are we doing here?

Back in 91, my appreciation of grunge stretched as far as Mudhoney and Nirvana - 30+ years later, my I appreciation of grunge stretches as far as Nirvana, as I now know Mudhoney are essentially a garage rock band who continue to be way better than anything the grunge scene churned out. Pearl Jam always sounded like bad pub rock played by dads. Those wretched guitar solos that leap out of nowhere and just make you want to cry; that pained, phlegmy voice... And the songs just don't seem to end! I wondered if the years might have been kind to them - my tastes have certainly changed, so I was keen to give this record a fair go, but no. It's awful. I hope never to hear it again.

As far as debut goes... this is an ok stepping stone, but it's not a very strong album. The mediocre drumming is way too in the front of the mix, Eddie Vedder has not found his voice yet, and nothing musically interesting happens until, maybe, Jeremy and then it's followed by more of the same. In a year where Gish, Nevermind, BADMOTORFINGER, Goo, Pretty on the Inside, Blood Suger Sex Magic, Screamadelica, and Trompe le Monde I have no idea how or why this album would stand out and make any top of lists.

One of the most overrated bands, right behind The Smiths and REM. No thank you. This album should be called 1 out of 10.

Been a long time since we've heard from any female or LGBTQ majority artists. Having such an aggressive, masculine album seems insulting at this stage. Especially from a band named after a slang term for jizz. Really do not enjoy Vedder's vocals too. Same staggeringly white North American jock rock world as Creed and The Calling.

The last awkward breath of the glam rock and roll and aged kickoff of more grunge-y sound that lacks any sort of exciting edge to it in either vocal performances or melody structures to not make you feel completely embarrassed for listening to it. Didn't finish it, aggrivating and exhausting listen in spite of some actual talented guitar work here. If it had like a tenth of the personality some of the significantly better bands that came after it had then maybe it would be at least passable, but as it is I don't want to hear this album ever again.

À partir de 1991, l'étiquette grunge va coller à la peau de nombreux groupes comme Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Rage Against the Machine et bien entendu Pearl Jam. Concernant Pearl Jam et je vais être clair, au début des années 90, j'étais plus punk que metal donc Nirvana m'a tout de suite beaucoup plus intéressé et j'ai délaissé les autres groupes. Je découvre donc et avec 30 ans de retard, le 1er album de Pearl Jam et je suis, j'avoue déconcerté. Car "Ten", pour ma part fut une expérience schizophrénique qui me pousse à lui attribuer la note la plus sévère, et malgré une reconnaissance intellectuelle de ses qualités. Car si ma tête peut concevoir la puissance de l'oeuvre, mes oreilles, elles, la rejettent en bloc. Soyons clairs d'emblée : je ne nie pas l'évidence. Cet album est une collection de morceaux formidablement bien écrits, dotés d'une énergie brute et d'une efficacité redoutable. Comment ne pas sentir le frisson sur l'introduction de "Once", l'appel à la révolte adolescent de "Jeremy" ou la puissance fédératrice de "Alive" ? Ces chansons sont des monstres de composition, des vagues d'émotions portées par la voix habitée d'un Eddie Vedder au charisme vocal indéniable. On sent le feu, la rage, la tristesse. On perçoit la virtuosité des musiciens, la solidité de la section rythmique et, surtout, les riffs et les soli de guitare de Mike McCready, qui transpirent une maîtrise quasi insolente. Chaque morceau est une cathédrale sonore, bâtie pour traverser le temps et remplir les stades. Et c'est précisément là que le bât blesse, et que mon plaisir s'est transformé en supplice. Car derrière le vernis "alternatif" et l'étiquette "grunge" de Seattle, se cache une production et une esthétique sonore qui heurtent de plein fouet tout ce que je déprécie en musique. Le son de "Ten" n'est pas celui de la crasse et de l'urgence punk. C'est un son massif, gonflé aux stéroïdes, qui puise ses racines directement dans le hard rock le plus emphatique des années 70. Chaque coup de cymbale résonne avec une réverbération de cathédrale, chaque solo de guitare s'étire dans une démonstration de virtuosité grandiloquente, chaque ligne de basse semble vouloir faire trembler les fondations du monde. C'est trop propre, trop ample, trop... metal. L'ombre qui plane sur tout le disque, et qui a achevé de me faire détester l'expérience, est celle de Led Zeppelin. Cette filiation, souvent revendiquée par les admirateurs du groupe comme une qualité, est pour moi le péché originel. J'ai entendu dans "Ten" non pas la relève de Nirvana ou de Mudhoney, mais l'héritier direct de ce rock bluesy, lourd et pompeux que je ne supporte pas. Les envolées lyriques de Vedder rappellent la démesure d'un Plant ; les soli pentatoniques à rallonge de McCready évoquent un Page qui aurait troqué son pantalon à pattes d'éléphant pour un bermuda de surfeur. Cette lourdeur, cette tendance à privilégier l'épique sur le viscéral, est un repoussoir absolu. L'écoute est devenue une lutte, où chaque riff puissant était immédiatement saboté à mes oreilles par une production trop démonstrative. Alors oui, paradoxalement, j'ai pris un certain plaisir à disséquer ce disque. Un plaisir quasi masochiste, celui de comprendre pourquoi une oeuvre si unanimement saluée pouvait me provoquer un tel rejet épidermique. C'est l'étrange sensation d'admirer la mécanique d'une voiture de sport tout en détestant sa couleur criarde et le bruit assourdissant de son moteur. J'ai reconnu le talent, mais j'ai détesté le résultat. Au final, cette écoute fut une expérience unique, dans le sens où elle restera unique. Je n'y retournerai pas. On me dit que "Vitalogy" est leur véritable chef-d'oeuvre, plus expérimental, plus brut. Peut-être. Mais le son de "Ten" a été si rédhibitoire qu'il a éteint toute curiosité. La porte s'est ouverte sur l'univers de Pearl Jam, j'ai jeté un oeil à l'intérieur, et j'ai vu un temple érigé à la gloire d'un son que je fuis. Trop, c'est trop. Je préfère refermer la parenthèse et laisser ce monument à ceux qui savent l'apprécier. Pour moi, ce fut une rencontre manquée, un dialogue de sourds entre une musique puissante et une oreille inflexible.

Rock for elderly people, not my drug of choice. OK music but a bit boring. The best song is probably ocean that gives some free spirit, howling to the moon by a bonfire vibes.

Meh. The songs sound so much the same that the impact them is lost without the music videos.

Notes says this could be categorizes as "hard rock" or maybe "grunge"? Either way I'm not too familiar with it and I can't say it was really my taste. Would have to be hard pressed to listen again

Dear God, no. I haven't really listened to a Pearl Jam song since I was in high school. Re-listening to this album really shows why. I hate his "singing" voice, the wild changes in tempo and pitch, it's just a combination paired in hell. The lyrics that he sings are just as boring/saying nothing, but the delivery makes it seem like there should be something there. This isn't even their worst album, but it's still a slog to get through.

Oh my god. This is so insanely cheesy and bad. I felt like I was Scott Aukerman on the "Analyze Phish" podcast, with every song starting with me being open minded to it, and the opening instrumentation, thinking "Okay, I can try to get in to this..." and then as soon as the vocals start it's immediately "Nope, okay, what the fuck is this? Seriously?" Absolutely wild to me that this is a whole bunch of people's favorite band. My god...

Bailed after 3 songs. Utter drivel.
