Reviews (page 5 of 13)
The album sounds calm, stylish, and confident, with no emotional strain or excess. Al Green’s voice is especially impressive — warm, smooth, and effortless. The rhythm section is tight and tasteful, keeping everything grounded and relaxed. Overall, it’s soulful music that feels natural and sincere, proving that restraint and elegance can be just as powerful as intensity.
Great Album from this genre!
listened to again so freaking smooth
un album con sonidos suaves, nuevos y diferentes para mi. segundas voces dulces y una voz principal bella. Letras con mucho sentimiento, ya sea de amor o dolor, perdicion.
Such a good album, I’m a sucker for a good horn section
Great songs. Love the horns and drums too.
A soul classic, and a great listen. A lot of the songs themselves don't differ from one another too greatly, a lot of overlap in subject matter and general vibe, all love and heartbreak with classic sexy and lush mo-town production from a characteristically tight backing band. What I spent most of my two listens marveling at is Green's voice. They really don't make male vocalists like him any more- beautiful range of dynamics and timbre on top of his vocal range itself. That's what sets this album apart. In terms of individual tracks, the highlight of the album for me was the cover of the Bee Gee's track "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", which is one of the few instances in which a cover actually elevates a song compared to the original.
Great discovery for me, as I knew only the title track "Let's stay together". I listened to it in a sunny winter morning while making coffee. Very relaxing. It gets a little too syrupy in the second half, but Green's masterful soul voice and the good arrangements let me listen to the whole album in one sitting. 4.5/5
Enjoyed this.
If I could only have one Al Green album, it'd be "I'm Still In Love With You" but this one is pretty good too
I listened while drinking sparkling water and building lego. good background. my personal favorite was Old Time Lovin
This is good. Legendary title track that is almost worth the price of admission on its own (the vocal melody on the second verse, "what I neeeeed" is incredible). Al's voice sort of straddles the line between that raspy Otis Redding/Stax sound and a smoother Motown vibe, also an idea that is sort of reflected in the musical arrangements as well. La-La For You is a great one I'd never heard. Overall a really nice listen.
I like it. Some songs never heard before
Sexy wine drinking music.
Al Green can croon and squeal in the same verse. His signature, syrupy tone was fully developed by the time he started making this record — the nuanced nature of his voice, at once delicate and powerful, is laid bare atop Willie Mitchell's exceptional production. This was their third collaboration, and they would go on to make seven more. Their synergy really gained steam with Let's Stay Together, a massive hit single and landmark album for soul music. Willie's sound merged the grittier bluesy soul prevalent in Memphis with Philly's glossier polished brand of soul. This cross-pollination of soul music's expanding branches in the early 70s was complimented by Al and Willie's experience and interest in gospel music — evident in the sustained, full-bodied organ that Al effortlessly rides on nearly every song, both instrument and human voices intertwining, yearning and yelping in equal measure. The lush string, horn, and vocal harmony arrangements functioned similarly in their work together. These aspects are now definitive hallmarks of Al Green's intimate, delicate sound — and they set his music apart from the more abrasive, up-front horn and string arrangements coming out of Stax and Motown. Their approach to tempo also contributed to their singularity: their ballads were a hair faster than their contemporaries, and their upbeat tracks rarely hit the dancefloor, R&B inspired tempos prevalent up north. As a result their songs move along at an infectious pace, perfect mid-tempo tracks for swaying and two-stepping.
Like it for a chill Saturday morning
Far more than just its title track, belting southern soul and sweet grooves.
great to listen to. Harmonizing vocals. Driving heartbeat, smooth walking bass. soulful vocals. 4/5
Just an amazing album. Defintiely worth listening to.
Can't go wrong with Al Green 😊 I'm not new to this album, but it was nice listening. Definitely picnic with your person music
I though it was going to be boring but I genuinely felt happier after listening to it.
This is very akin to Let's Get It On in sentiment, I think this album is really good and while it doesn't quite do anything incredible the quality of the music and the writing are so high that it elevates everything alongside it. Seriously you could probably present this to anyone anytime and the chances they like it are pretty solid. For 34 minutes this album certainly serenades you and then it's out the door, without lingering for even a second. Well worth a listen if you have a spare half an hour, honestly this was a nice palette cleanser. Best songs: Let's Stay Together Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 34/47 (below Let's Get It On, above Madman Across the Water)
really good soul album with a twist of R&B elements that makes you wanna dance too, not just listen to it in the background
Good album with some standout tracks.
really strong album, listened to it whilst making dinner just felt right
I'm only familiar with the title track, but the rest sound pretty good too. Quality soul and a great recording too. Favourite tracks: La-la for You So You're Leaving
A classic album with some amazing songs and an equally amazing vocal performance by Al Green. I just wish the sound was a little more crisp.
Great voice. Horns and strings and backing vocals, all excellent. I obviously already knew Let's Stay Together, which is the best track. Also liked What Is This Feeling, I've Never Found a Girl, and It Ain't No Fun to Me.
it was good just not my vibe at the moment
Smooth and classy
en vrai j’ai adoré j’ai écouté pendant que je travaillais et ça m’a mis dans le mood parfait j’ai beaucoup aimé l’ambiance que ça créait
a cool and smooth half hour, felt like a cup of coffee on a brisk autumn morning
Pretty solid album with catchy tunes. Did not overstay its welcome. However, there were no songs that were outstandingly catchy.
Damn what a solid album.
8.5 / 10
Smooth, smooth, net te smooth voor vijf sterren
Good
Solid soul album, but bettered by others from the same year
I thought I accidentally skipped some tracks but nope, this one just cruises by that easily. What a fun listen every time, the opener is great, the background vocals are fun, the music flows.
1er album de l'année, tres sympa et agreable. Détend Lucy : 8/10 Luka 8/10 Trop court Chanson pref : It Ain't no fun to me
Full of smooth soul
Marvelous
Not an album I’m new to, but one I’ll never be adverse to listening to again. This album to me is that soft kind of love u share with some, whether it’s partner, friend or family. That love that makes you want to drink coffee together and enjoy each other’s silence. I haven’t given the full album a listen to in some years, so I’m very thrilled to be revisiting these sounds!
Very enjoyable
I enjoyed it. always liked "lets stay together" but the new songs that i liked were "La-La For You" and "Never Found a Girl"
Awesome easy listening album. Love me some Al Green!!!
One of the best to ever do it
Some songs are better than others, but Al’s vocals are always smooth
Nothing but harmless, cozy soul adorns Al Green's 'Let's Stay Together', which is bursting with equal amounts of passion and groove. Complete with the typical building blocks of soul: organ, horns, doo-wop backing vocals: Green's easy-going voice helps add plenty of good vibes to the music, with the title track, 'So You're Leaving' and 'What Is this Feeling' great examples of this. The album can get quite deep at times too, with 'Old Time Lovin'' and 'How Can You Mend a Broken Heart' (originally by The Bee Gees) showing off a more subdued side of Green, showing he can convey a large array of emotions. It's a great soul record, and Green's voice does plenty to drive it, possessing that rich ability to jump from emotion to emotion without pushing himself too hard. Best songs: Let's Stay Together, So You're Leaving, What Is This Feeling, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Not quite a 5-star album for me, but I enjoyed every song.
soul music is pretty good. it’s the crying of a black man’s soul. the chord changes on “lala for you” were funky, probably my favorite track
Can totally see the influence this album had in music. Just not for me.
One of those rare cases where a record is stronger as an album than as a collection of songs.
I like the chill vibe.
It’s quite chill, reminds me of ny in fall
Musically, this was very enjoyable to listen to. It's smooth, sexy, slowly funky, warm, and inviting. Al and the backup vocalists are fucking perfect. The horns add some pep and punch, and the drummer knows just when to add a little flair. Very nice to listen to. On the production end, this was a terrible mess. Al's mic and the mics for the brass are WAYYYYY too hot and break up even in softer passages, but get really nasty when Al is getting loud or the horns come in to accent something. Bordering on unlistenable for most tracks. I'm sure this sounded great on systems of the day, but not on modern hifi gear for sure. Kind of a bummer, as this era was the beginning of the "perfect recording" era and this great album got passed up
What a voice. Starts with a bang, and flows great... very Muscle Shoalsy production (which is great in my book), but the string arrangements were a little too much for me at times. Still, nothing afterwards can't touch that opener... not even the soultastic rendition of the Bee Gees. The closer is great, btw... it played like a riff off Take Me To The River. There are better albums by the Reverend, but I bow to his altar nonetheless after listening to this.

Favorite Track: Let's Stay Together
Al Green smoooooth with it. 4/5
Opening track is maybe the best song on this, but the rest is still a really good time. Al Green's voice is so good and this whole album is so soulful.
just high vibes. and really good melodies. beautiful lyrics.
This is good. A classic. Enjoyable all The way through.
Some absolute classics
It’s great but not one I see myself returning to often
Great voice and production. Not much variation. Good to listen all the way thru if the mood is right.
Pretty good. I didn't realize how violent he was though
Classic
So smooth. “Let’s Stay Together” is one of the greatest R&B songs ever! (Play it at your wedding, ok?) And this album *also* features Green’s sweet cover of “How Can You Mend a Broken Heat.” Swoon.
god forbid a white boy have a little soul Would I listen again: yes Deserves to be on this list: yes 4.3
I really liked this album, though it is not something I personally may go back to. It is definitely classic soul, beautifully done, and well performed. I could see someone giving this 5 stars, but I feel I lack the expertise to realize how significant this album is, other than a really good soul album.
Nice smooth listening for night time
So very chill, love it. Production coukd have been better, it’s sometimes a little heavy on the treble.
The title track is a classic for a reason. This song is smooth as butter. Enjoyed the rest of my listen, but honestly didn't give much dedicated attention. The vocals and instrumentals were solid. Standouts were Old Time Lovin' and I've Never Found a Girl. Also found Judy to be really pretty. This straddles a high 3, low 4 line for me. Going with the nudge because I really enjoyed this in the background.
Another artist that slides right into the ranks of Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. I don't know if it's because I like this style of music a lot, but I feel like everybody has to appreciate this album. You don't have to love it, but I can't picture people seriously giving it a 1 or a 2. Easy listening and groovy.
Nice smooth soul. Always a great listen when one of these albums comes up.
Let's Stay Together is a classic that I didn't know the name of. First song was my favorite but damn the rest was still great. This was just buttery smooth pretty much all the way through.
Ah, starts off silky smooth.
Great album, I don't have much to say about it but I just love the winds and brass here. There's something so rich about the band's tone — it really warms the soul.
Lotta soul on this one, that ones for sure.
One of the strongest opening songs to an album. Would be a 5/5 if the rest of the album kept up. - T
That was pleasant. I would enjoy listening to it again.
This guy could sing the phone book and make it sound romantic. The groove never quits, and that falsetto is dangerous. A masterclass in how to set a mood. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Let's Stay Together - La-La for You - So You're Leaving - How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Great voice, great musicianship. Probably wouldn't have sought this out on my own.
Would not buy
Very smooth, very cool. Solid 4/5
I usually love soul but this one didn't stick out to me beyond the first song, I didn't even notice when it was over. It's good though.
Feels good. Just feels good. From soulful, to funky, to bluesy. Just feels good. Highlight tracks: Let's Stay Together, La-La for You, It Ain't No Fun to Me.
really good
good
It was a nice surprise to see I hadn't actually heard this album before, I thought I had. I've only heard (and own) the 'greatest hits' compilation, which I would recommend above this to someone getting into Al Green for the first time. As a fan of Al's vocals in general, I'm loving this album by default. I wouldn't trade it in for my record, but I appreciate the every-day-listen direction it's going in. Nothing too crowded, lots of talented nooks to enjoy, very pleasing to the ear, well produced. It was fun accidentally finding out it sounds great right out of my mid-tier-phone speakers. It's like it was mixed with the fuzziness of the average budget sound system in mind. 3.8/5
Groovy
Great soul music. Traditional values vibe.
Good hit rest is decent
An enjoyable classic soul album that's a classic for a reason. I'm surprised I haven't noticed samples from this album, as it seems like it would be great source material for modern updates. Doesn't reach the heights of others in its genre in my opinion but still a worthy inclusion.
Fantastico, muito gostosinho de ouvir pra relaxar ou ficar dengada com o amorzinho. Você consegue ver influências de artistas nele
bom pacas
Really great album
Yes! Lush and beautiful.
Cool
sweet!
Startet mit nem Banger. Zieht sich in Teilen, ist unterm Strich aber ein fairer take für 1001 Alben.
Happy birthday to me. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Good
Awesome album full of soul and classics. Wasn't too long, and left me wanting more. This album is unlike any stands up to the test of time. Love the instrumentation and the singing and writing. Good vibes all around, Al Green is the man
Very good soul album
Nothing stood out as awful or amazing. Overall one of the better listening experiences, consistent in tone and quality
Super chill vibes. 4.5!
I love the winds on this, and Al Green has an amazing voice that he uses really well. The songs themselves are pretty basic, but it's pretty hard not to have a good time with it with how damn infectious the whole thing is. The title track is completely out of this world, too.
Oj, jaki on ma głos. Jak atłas. Miękki, ciepły z interesującą fakturą. Można słuchać w nieskończoność. Gatunek muzyczny nie do końca w linii z moją wrażliwością, ale ten wokal to wynagradza. Przykrywa. 7/10
Let’s stay together, what is this feeling, Judy, & ain’t no fun for me are the highlights of a classically smooth, soulful album dedicated to love
classic i dont know so well
Albums you must hear before you die #2 I prefer a lot this one that the album i listened to yesterday It's really a good & fun album. I didn't like that much the title track. But holy fuck How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is REALLY better than all the other songs on the album. I almost cried during the listening of this one song.
The smoothest vocal of the 70s. Great soul. 4/5
Hard not to be happy listening to this
Let's be honest here, the only question was if this is a 4 or 5 stars album. I'm going to set it at 4 but it's a 4.5 for me. Great songs, amazing singing, excellent timeless production. I'll be back to re-listen to this album for sure.
Four stars, it’s a really solid album.
No bad tracks and a couple great ones. Got a bit monotonous but as short an album as it is, it was fine. 4.25/5
Really enjoyed this. Just a great soulful, chillout album. As with so many on here so far I had never heard of him before but I will definitely be checking out more. Top Track - I’ve Never Found A Girl
Virkelig god musik.
I took for granted this album. This is my first time sitting and listening to it in full. This album evokes emotions out of me that I didn’t expect. I especially love How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Judy
Incredible soul album, his voice is so distinct and memorable, every song hits so well and the production is amazing. Will keep it in rotation.
day 21: i want his jacket it looks awesome. great album! bit of soul to wake me up on an early morning, jazzy and heartening. lyrics are sweet and loving and the instrumentals match as such.
So groovy!
What I like about this album is that it’s genuinely heartfelt. Al shows a lot of personality in his voice.
This album is really good. It has many great songs, even though it's not that strong for me to actually think it's great. At some point it feels like it doesn't have much more to offer. But, overall, the album has great songs, that's something that cannot be denied. And I enjoyed it a lot.
Blues, Jazz, m'agrada. M'ha sorpres, transmet bones vibes
Beautiful, painful album. I've Never Found a Girl stood out. 4/5
Album art 2/5
I went to see more movies in the theater in 1994 than any other year. After my sophomore year in college, I decided to move to Tucson to try to get residency to attend the University of Arizona. I could not support myself and only made it through the summer. However, I could afford to go to as many movies as possible. We're talking The Lion King, Forrest Gump, True Lies, The Flintstones, Speed, The Mask, Maverick, Wolf, The Crow, and even something like When a Man Loves a Woman. I would also hit up the dollar theater where I saw Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, twice. Anyway, after moving back to Kansas to stay with my uncle, I would still go to the theater when I could. Pulp Fiction was another movie I saw twice. So I guess my two favorite movies of 1994 were Pulp Fiction and Ace Ventura. "Let's Stay Together" plays over the the scene where Marcellus Wallace is bribing Butch. It is a little nugget that pays off on subsequent viewings of the movie. Knowing that Butch eventually rescues Marcellus Wallace from hillbilly sodomists, "Let's Stay Together" is an inspired choice of music. I wonder if Al Green is sending checks to Quentin Tarantino. If not, he should be. I dig the rest of the album's vibe.
I love this
i love this album despite of the controversial artist
A very enjoyable album. Great voice. Would definitely go back to this again
Très sympa.
great sound, lovely
Mmmmmm what a voice man, what romance
This was pretty good! I saved two songs: "Let's Stay Together" and "How Can You Med a Broken Heart." Fun
Fun album to hear!
good album just not my type
Lovely album, very good instrumentals and nice vocals 4/5
His fourth album. Soul. The opening track and album title song, Let's Stay Together is a smooth, bona fide classic. Great lyrics delivered by that silky voice. In fact we get that throughout the album. La-La For You continues in the same vain. I like the photo for the album cover too. Old Time Lovin' is another good one. This album is a chilled out groove the whole way through.
Other than the title track the material is nothing special, but the arrangements and sound are just perfect throughout.
Smooth operator.
Beautiful album, feels like listening to a summer afternoon. Very peaceful.
250/1089 - Organist and guitarist aren't agreeing on the A- (or major) chord on What is This Feeling. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart sounds like it switches between different backing tracks mid song a few times. Pretty abysmal recording quality but interesting voice and competent songwriting.
About as good as this genre gets for me. 4/5
I’m not really into this kind of music. Soul, R&B has never really been my go-to. But Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together is what I call an "exception" album. It’s like Beck’s "Odelay" - even if it’s not the sort of thing you'd normally listen to, it’s one of those albums that everyone seems to have in their collection regardless. Why? There's some great songwriting here for a start. Or maybe it's because of his incredible voice, shifting from smooth to raw to almost breaking apart, and it keeps you hooked. It’s no surprise Tarantino dropped the title track into Pulp Fiction. It has a real vibe of "cool" to it. I might not be a soul guy, but this one is in my collection.
The title track from this one is obviously the standout but the whole album is really good. Not a lot to say about it, but it definitely deserves a listen. I'd absolutely recommend this to anyone and would buy it and play it in regular rotation. It's not quite up there for a 5 for me but a solid 4 for sure. 4/5
Beautiful. Soulful. Classic. It's Al Green, baby. This was a breeze of listen over a relaxing weekend.
1972. Al Green being so smooth and groovy. The title track hitting #1 on the pop charts at the time. I think this is boosted because I just enjoy the tunes and soul. Its historic value didn't break the rolling stones 500.
Done
Let‘s stay together - cheesyyy, but i kind of like it, really like the genre (3,5/5) La-la for you - really sweet, very chill (4/5) (3rd fav) So you're leaving me - solid song (3/5) What is this feeling - so cheesy againn, but i domt mind it, giggling? (3,8/5) Old time lovin - so soothing and chill, love (4,5/5) (2nd fav) I've never found a girl - ayyy also really like this, catchyy (4/5) How can you mend a broken heart - ahhh, why so tragic (i live for it) (4,5/5) (fav) Judy - chill, nothjng to Special, like the string instruments (3,5/5) It ain't no fun to ne - different vibe than the rest, feels a bit repetitive at one point (2,7/5) (least fav) Overall a solid Album, liked the vibe alot my fav so far (3,8/5)
4.0 - Eine tolle Reise, die von Anfang bis Ende Spaß macht! Highlights: Let's Stay Together, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?
Slaps so hard
Really good, might have been better if I wasn’t listening on the free version of Spotify because there were ads between the songs. Regardless, this one would probably still be a four to me just based on the absolute classics I had leading up to this one.
Superfint album.
The title song and how can you mend a broken heart are 5/5 songs. Other ones are okay. 3.75
There’s some albums that I feel so unqualified to write anything about. And also, this is such a classic that everything that can be said has been said. Solid and undeniable. 4/5
Can't really go wrong with Al Green
Really solid album. Am a bit conflicted now that I found out he's into domestic violence. Why are so many men so terrible?
Who doesn't love them some Al Green?
Nice and groovy
Let’s Stay Together for the Kids
Alright, I'll stay if you say it like this.
Kind of back to back bangers on this one. A really tight 34 minutes never overstays its welcome. I had a friend once on roleplaying forum whose favorite artist was Al Green this made me think of him and how I should have followed his reccomendation earlier in my life. This era of R&B and soul is a little bit of a blindspot for me aside from the big artists so excited to get more of it. Stand out tracks: Let's Stay Together, What is This Feeling and I've Never Found a Girl
I love soul music, and this is a great album. Not perfect mind you, not everyone can make "What's Going On," but it's still a damn good time, sensual, and tender. 4/5
Digger soundet på denne plata. Lavmælte låter.
Only knew the title track before. Several other great ones on here (especially liked the last track, pretty funky)
Great
The Reverend Al Green is definitely the man when it comes to making albums to f**k or break up to. Gets Next to You is a better album though.
Just incredibly good music. Absolutely timeless.
Love 70 funky jam
Looking forward to hearing all of this. I'd be impressed by any album that can claim a better opening track than the title track here. It's just sublime. The rest is easy to listen to, he has a beautiful voice. Nothing overstays its welcome, and at 34 minutes, neither does the album. 4/5
I've loved Let's Stay Together for a long time, but Old Time Lovin' holds a special place in my heart.
Amazing. Classic Al Green, one of his best.
Couple of classics. The rest just blended into background music. The classics get this a fourth star.
Massive stuff, really love the title track. What a voice this man has. 4.8/5
great al green album
Blah
Ça s'écoute tellement tout seul que j'écoutais pas ben ben. 3.5 étoiles
Broadly love Al Green but this one didn't hit me in the usual way consistently. He might be one of those artists with an INCREDIBLE greatest hits that are really the only truly brilliant ones.
Soul usually doesn't do a whole lot for me, but this one was so well executed that it just worked for me
mmmm tasty
Vibe and chill. Title track is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Fun and groovy. I could see why this would be a popular album in 1972. Very good for being that old.
Very enjoyable
Very groovy, the first track is such a banger. It's a really pleasant album, well produced, the ending makes you feel like, is that it?
I ended up enjoying it more than I thought
let's stay together how can you mend my broken heart
heaven
I mean, what is there really to say. Al Green has a velvety smooth voice made for soulful tunes and the band is tight as fuck. This is just so easy to listen to. 4 stars
I think the opening title track is its peak, but it doesn’t dip too much from there.
The soul doctor is more responsible for babies being born in the US than OBGYNS 4.2/5
Yes. I like it!
This is one smooth mother fucker.
Let's stay together, makes me want to take a stroll through an urban area on a crisp fall morning.
Silky smooth. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart is one of the best songs I've heard. Will revisit, high 4* (85/100)
Amazing vocal work and killer songwriting.
Honestly it sounded lovely and might have grown on me but it washed over me.
I was already a big Al Green fan before coming into this and this has just further pushed my opinion. I love soul music so much and Al had one of the best voices of all time. He’s able to express his feelings so well creating beautiful songs and then also has the ability to create groovy tracks to dance to. This is probably my fav album by him so far because of the reasons I stated. My favourite songs were How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Judy two amazing, deep songs. Overall I love this I would kill to give this a 5 stars but I just can’t so I’m giving it a 9/10 4.5/5
Very nice. Smooth & chilled out vibes. The Bee Gees cover is sublime.
Pretty good
My pants showed themselves out halfway through and I suddenly found myself draped in velvet with gold-tinted aviators perched low on my nose.
A lot of classic songs on this album wow! I enjoyed it!
Talk about strong openers! Let’s Stay Together is an immaculate song. It’s timeless and perfectly sensual. The perfect vibe for an at home dinner date or making dinner with a beautiful sunset shining through your windows. Al’s vocal and soulful talent made this an album I would happily listen to often. My favorite tracks were the opener, Judy and What is This Feeling. I would LOVE to be alive when this was released.
Whether Times Are Good Or Bad 1001 Albums Generator 95 (08/13/2025) It's that song from that one Pulp Fiction scene! And holy shit, the album around it is so groovy and soulful. I think that a hatred of this album would require a complete lack of sex-having or libido. Like come on, the title track is one of the most sensual songs ever. And it's a fucking bop. Now, Let's Stay Together never tops its title track throughout the rest of its short runtime, but it comes damn close. Al Green's fourth studio album is composed of 9 soul songs with his signature crooning on top. Some of these songs, most notably the closer, It Ain't No Fun To Me, feature moments that are almost rock-ish, but for the most part, this is as pure a soul affair as it gets. Beyond the massive opening title track, there is a lot to love here. La-La For You has this old school rockabilly kind of sound in the piano that is so fun. So You're Leaving feels like it should have been a huge hit and honestly sounds extremely modern. The basswork is great. Old Time Lovin' makes me miss my wife (she's still alive, I'm just in my office right now lol). How Can You Mend A Broken Heart is the other massive hit here, and I don't know. It's good, but I don't think it's the second best song here the way a lot of people seem to. Judy is really underrated and is one of my favorite songs. There are really only two moments on this album that don't work for me. The first is the kind of forgettable What Is This Feeling. This is the only song where I don't really like Al Green's unique vocal style and the instrumental is not anything to write home about. The second moment that I don't love is the closer It Ain't No Fun To Me, which has a little bit more of a blues or rock'n'roll vibe to it that I don't think works with Al's band. Overall, Let's Stay Together is a wonderful, celebratory soul album filled with really fun songs. Al Green is an extremely talented vocalist and performer. Some songs don't work, but the album is short and easy to listen to. 4/5. Favs: Let's Stay Together La-La For You Old Time Lovin' Least Fav: It Ain't No Fun To Me
Pure baby making music, the dude is slick wit it
Cracking opening song. The rest is good R&B too, but Let's Stay Together just overpowers the rest
9/10
Pretty good.
Great voice, emotional song writing, good production. Not a bad song on there. Really admire lets stay together, old time lovin and how can you mend a broken heart. Would have loved this record to be longer than 34 mins.
4/5. Good stuff
An absolute chill vibe To me this is Micheal Jackson if he went soul instead of pop which would’ve been awesome
Al Green is a very talented vocalist. Hits aside, I enjoyed side B of the album more than the beginning.
Tää oli kiva löytö! Saatan kuunnella uudelleen.
Smoothia ja hyvin funtsittua musaa levy täynnä! Saatan joutua kuuntelemaan toistekin.
Realllllly good, great flow, songs were smooth af and very easy to listen to. Didn't once feel like it was dragging or getting boring, if anything I feel it ended too soon but I'm not going to mark it down for that, it wasn't particularly missing anything. Felt a bit one note at times, could have possibly done with some more variety but ultimately a good collection of great songs.
Calm, cool, melodic soul music that’s well written and well performed. Very easy on the ears, but not altogether too memorable. Let’s Stay Together (9/10) La-La For You (7/10) So You’re Leaving (8/10) What Is This Feeling (7/10) Old Time Lovin’ (7/10) I’ve Never Found a Girl (8/10) How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (8/10) Judy (7/10) It Ain’t No Fun for Me (7/10) 7.6/10
Terrific period soul that is well executed and delivers a chill vibe throughout, but is brought over the top by a handful of truly terrific tunes. This includes the title track, of course, but also “La-La For You”, “I’ve Never Found A Girl (That Loves Me Like You Do)”, and the blues workout “It Ain’t No Fun To Me.” There are a number of records on this list where the silky smooth delivery is most of the story. Not so with this record - this one also brings the tunes.
Really chill and lovely to listen to. It's nothing complicated, it's simplicity is what makes it beautiful
Classic!
Great early soul.
played half while packing to go from birmingham to oxford, the other half while alex drove us there. a very relaxing yet upbeat album, would listen again
Delightful vocals!
Nice oldskool soul. Not all songs do it for me, but the punchy ones do (the cheesy ones, less so). Very recognisable vocals. A 3 or a 4.
8.5/10
Soul Brother #1-A sings so beautifully.
Good and funky, had some fun with this one!
[Jamie Fox voice]: AL GREEN!! OOOOOOOO!!!!
Groovy and Smooth
4 reten
Always a good day when big al is on the menu. Obv this album is a winner. 4.5 for me
Awesome. Know this will be a grower. Let’s stay together is already one of my favorite songs ever.
Classic soul album. The title track is one of my favourite songs of all time.
You Got to love some classic soul! 90/100
An album that remains relevant today. I was surprised by how many songs I recognized, even though I had never listened to the full album before. Its smooth sound suits a variety of settings
#58 of working through the 1001 Albums list My first experience of Al Green was him doing The First Noel (1990), I remember not really liking it but not really understanding vocal runs at the time. Having a quick refresh it's not a bad song. Al Green was really known as a Gospel singer (to me) but he was also considered one of the last great Soul singers too. The title track Let's Stay Together is obviously iconic and I'm sure most people will know this song. He really has a smooth voice and they vocal choices made are what make this album iconic. This is a great album, I really like all these songs, it's hard to pick standouts because they are all top tier. I'm glad I listened to this album, not sure how frequently I will play this but there are moments (when you want to experience every stage of love) when this will be the perfect album to put on. Standouts: Let's Stay Together, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, It Ain't No Fun to Me
An outstanding album from start to finish. Excellent - and the only reason it’s not 5* is because it’s just shy of its successor - Call Me.
Not a single skip, beautiful top to bottom. "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was just *chefs kiss*
sweet goodness
Ii just think this is a high quality album and I really like the bass weight and presence in the songs. The funky moment with the last track was an excellent closer.
oh yeah. I could listen to this all day. Amazing voice. Smooth. Great songs. Love it.
soul guapo con ritmo muy relajante
3.85 stars. Great soul album
Eh?
Great 4
𝘓𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 is a smooth, heartfelt soul album carried by Al Green’s unmistakable voice and understated arrangements. The title track alone is worth the listen — gentle, warm, and timeless. Throughout the album, Green balances tenderness and groove with effortless charm, supported by subtle instrumentation that leaves room for his vocals to shine. While the overall pace is relaxed and some songs blend into each other, the emotional honesty and musical elegance make this a deeply rewarding listen. A classic that radiates soul without needing to shout.
4.5 Grew up listening to Sam Cooke, but “Let’s Stay Together” was the first soul track that really blew me down. Other favorites: “So You’re Leaving”; “Old Time Lovin’”
Yes
So vibey
Soulful and smooth - definitely a slow groove of an album, but still a classic for good reason
Exactly what you'd expect, beautiful voice, singing sweet soul melodies, perfect instrumentals to complement, very much in the vein of the great Otis Redding. Nothing groundbreaking other than maybe the title track, but a lovely listen
Até poderia dizer que seria um disco seria de uma música só, mas o cara era muito fora da curva!!!
Really nice this. Just lacking one or two more bangers. Sure I already reviewed this.
Great, but Bit repetitive.
Smooth as silk. One of the better singers we’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing the earth with. Found some of the arrangements to be a little lacking but this is spiritually a 4.5
Al Green can whisper sweet nothings in my ear anytime. The backing band can come too.
It starts really strong, stalls out in the middle, and then finishes on a stronger note. Al Green's vocal style is unique, but also sometimes a little grating.
Amazing soul album with so many iconic songs
I mean come on it's Al Green! This is a damn good album. You know more of his stuff than you realize. I've not listened to this album in its entirety before but I knew most of the songs.
What a great opening to an album. Never quite reaches the same level through the rest of the album but it’s still great.
Let's stay together is one of the most beautiful songs I know. Al Green = fabric in my musical upbringing, just hearing his voice puts me in a good mood
What a great album. It's thoughtful. His voice cozies up to the horns and strings... It's perfection. I listened to How Can You Mend a Broken Heart a few times in a row (long sigh- lalala lalala la la la la la).
An album whose success firmly rests on the title track. The remainder is certainly worth a listen as Al's vocals are masterful in the lost art of restraint without ever sacrificing an iota of expression. Kudos to the BeeGees for providing one of the high points - "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart". A song and album I loathed - here finds it's way. It's all about the delivery. And Rev Al certainly does.
Я не большой фанат соула но вот этот понравился очень
Душевное исполнение спокойных песен. Самое то, когда хочется чего-то такого романтического. 7 из 10.
soooo nice
pretty good! a really fun listen with airpods (surround sound audio). super groovy and funky, yet laid back and relaxed. nothing stood out to me but i still really liked it. probably a 4/5.
Solidno za chill/lounge
Such a classic sound and feel. Loved this whole album!
I know the opening song but I’ve never listened to this album. Three tracks in. This album is great. Great grove great swing. It’s fun to listen to and yet relaxing at the same time. “Old time loving” is just wonderful. What a great song.
Enjoyed this album, great background music.
4.0 - Very Good
How can I say no when he looks so cool on the cover Will I listen to again: 76%
Loved this.
really enjoyed this album, his voice is so smooth and he has an incredible range. the arrangements were solid and the whole album flowed nicely (wanted to give 4.5)
i mean. it's a great collection of soul. Al Green wails and lays himself all over these tracks in ways that make you feel like you just sat down after a hard day standing at work. speaks to something deeper than just what the lyrics dictate. deserves to be one of the 1001? yeah!
Amazing voice, great soul music. Not a bad song on here. 8/10
A couple of straight up bops in this album. Kinda homogenous in sound, but it’s a good sound imo. Id give 3.5 if I could, but I’m generous today. 4 stars.
I found myself really enjoying this album on the second listen. The first listen was pretty unmemorable to be completely honest, but I decided to give it another chance and it was well worth it. The lyrical content and themes of this album really don’t run very deep and the music is not anything incredibly impressive either, but its simplicity and subtlety make this solid collection of music.
What a revelation. I didn't realise I liked Al Green. I assumed they'd all sound like Lets stay together. La la land is a funky song. I'm going to learn it on the piano. I'm an all in Green head now
Great voice.
Easy listening
Beautiful
Great singer (a rare event for recent albums thrown up on the list!), and in then main, very enjoyable. 3.5 generously rounded up to a 4 to counter all the 1 ratings I seem to be chucking about recently!
Back in the 70’s when all we had was AM radio, you’d hear all styles of music one after another. Rock, country, R&B, folk..Al Green was a staple then. Let’s Stay Together is such a great song and the rest of the album is full of good stuff. It’s too bad music has been so labeled and separated by genre and sub genres. Ah nostalgia.
really fun stuff. obviously the title track is a classic and is terrific. the rest of the album is also pretty great too, but does fall prey to being a bit same-y throughout. there's not a bad song in the bunch, but it does come off a bit one note. still, al green is a great vocalist and his smooth and sultry delivery is what you're here for. i would be remiss in not mentioning the arrangement and production of the album is so classic and still sounds great. the horns on here are iconic!
if someone likes this it is an al GREEN flag Grinning Cat with Smiling Eyes Emoji Fav song: I've Never Found a Girl
Good soul album with hints of R&B, good production and a good group of musicians.
Chill and relaxing
Smooth
What a voice. So familiar, but listen to it again, I mean really listen to it. Hellliva voice.
Soooo damn sweet, I love it.
Soul is a great genre, another smooth relaxing and timeless album.
хороший, пошёл с друзьями в плейлист классической музыки
Another hit, what a voice, solid tracks high standard. Let stay together is such a good track.
Solid R&B album that still carries on some of that Motown sound from the 60s. I actually think some of the less-heralded tracks on this album are the best ones. I really liked "What Is This Feeling" and "I've Never Found a Girl." Maybe not the absolutely top of the top of albums, but a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
a real good classic album
Some great easy listening soul on display here. Some more emotional tunes sprinkled into a bed of warm soul sound about love and connection. Classic and timeless. 7/10
