Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Richa and soulful, but kind of samey throughout.
Lovely soulful album. Lots of great hits on it like let’s stay together and how can you mend a broken heart. Album feels like the perfect length as well.
liked it a whole lot
Amazing voice and unique style.
groovy ✌️
Sweet soul music. Ze laten de star of the show, Al's iconische stem, floreren. 8/10 Highlights: Let's Stay Together La-La for You How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Silky smooth throughout.
Fantastic album, full of great tracks, even the lesser known ones. IT's a little short and leaves you wanting more, but that's probably a feature of the era it was made in.
I really like the groovy vibe. Every song has enough different elements to it to keep it interesting. I love the interplay between Al and the band, with a lot of relaxed call and response. It feels so balanced. For all the albums on this list that I wish were shorter, this is one that I wish was longer.
One of the most iconic openings to any album! Great first song and it stays consistent throughout. I only recognized "Let's Stay Together", but the rest of the songs were solid.
Just over thirty minutes of buttery smooth southern soul music performed by one of the coolest voices in the genre. I mean just that sentence alone perfectly justifies my opinion on this album. However, if you are going into this album expecting some sort of crazy experimentation and out there genre-fusions, you're only setting yourself up for disappointment. This album thrives off the basics and can build deeply intimate, and occasionally upbeat, tracks off that typical drum, guitar, bass, horn, and organ formula. 'Let's Stay Together', 'What Is This Feeling', and 'Old Time Lovin' are just some incredible standalone soul tracks. The long string-backed 'How Can You Mend a Broke Heart' stands as one of the most beautiful soul songs of all time. The very idea of "Soul" in one album. Yup.
Only knowing the title track, which is a total jam, (thanks Tarantino), the rest of the album was good to hear and maintains similar energy and tight playing I was expecting. By the end I tell myself "this sounds an awful lot like Talking Heads" followed by an immediate face palm moment.
One all time song and an all time artist. Short and sweet and unmistakably Al Green.
Rating: 8/10 Very soulful and pleasant to listen to.
Not bad. I really enjoyed this album.

I actually knew a lot of these songs through cultural osmosis even though I don't think I've ever sought out music by Al Green. I don't really know much about soul music but I really did enjoy this album. The best song is easily "Let's Stay Together," which opens the album. The other songs are good but don't really measure up to the title track.
Very enjoyable.
Brilliant album, great sound and great songs. I will listen to this over and over again. Favourite song: How can you mend a broken heart Least favourite: all good Album artwork: cool cover.
I've long liked classical soul and Al Green is of course a staple of the genre - deservedly so in terms of his considerable vocal skills. But I always felt his songs lack a bit of oomph. More powerful instrumentation would help, or catchier choruses. This album could certainly do with remastering at least to make the instrumentation more powerful. 3.5 rounded up.
Even with the first song beig the title track, the rest of the album does not fall into the trap of being weaker than the one song. The band is very punchy and gives you that cross between jazz and soul which crosses between a lot of lines (and timelines). His version of "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" grooves so much more than the original to me, which I always found a little on the slow side. A lot of the songs blended together, but in a good way. I found that none of them disrupted the flow of the music. It was always very smooth, even as Al Green was doing so many vocal gymnastics throughout. The only song I felt was a little week was "La La For You," but I enjoyed the rest pretty well. Definitely a great feel-good album. I will come back to this one. It's a 4 for me right now but I can imagine it going up to a 5. Top tracks: Title track, "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart?", "What Is This Feeling?"
A classic but not every tune is a banger
Very nice. Al Green has a very soulful voice and the album never rises above its well known title track, but the whole album is still great.
We’re having a baby in 9 months. Thanks a lot, Al Green.
So cool. Great brunch or easy listening album. First and last songs were my favorite.
4/5
Echt wel nice
Typ Marvin Gaye fast inte riktigt hans nivå. Fortfarande bra dock.
Smooth, romantic ballads showcasing the velvety vocals and seductive soulfulness of a leading purveyor in lush, sensual R&B.
A classic, polished musicianship that makes it all sound so easy; Al’s delivery is emotional, spiritual, uplifting and also melancholy - love never ached quite like this. A fine album
fan det här är gött alltså. riktigt svängigt. old time loving är ett väldigt bra spår.
Good and bad and happy and sad.
Favorite Tracks: Let’s Stay Together How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Fantastic!
fun album interesting pitch modulations in his voice
Fantastisk stemme. How can you mend a broken heart er også virkelig god
A lovely little set of songs. Knew a couple other than the title track but maybe hadn’t put it together that they were all on this album.
always a great listen
You can tell how good something is by the number of times it's covered and a lot of this has been covered as full versions or samples
Al Green is a great singer and this is a great album. However, the lead single is so good that the rest of the album suffers in comparison.
Just a little more variety and this would be an utter classic, regardless a great album 4*
Great album
I played this for my 2 cats, I now have 4 cats. 🐱🐱🐱🐱
Sunday afternoon listening music
Let’s stay together <<<3333 So gorg, just what i needed Every song was a SMASH standouts: let’s stay together, it ain’t no fun to me, how can you mend a broken heart
4.5/5 - gorgeous. standout tracks: la-la for you - 5/5 how can you mend a broken heart -4/5
Probably one of the best soul albums i’ve ever heard. not a single bad track
Comfy listening. It must have been so freeing for people to listen to something like this after the 50s and 60s.
This was a groovy and welcome change from Radiohead.
Pero es que cualquier tema de este disco podría haber sido un single de éxito: What is this feeling, La la for you, It ain´t no fun for me (antecedente claro de Here i am), I´ve never found a girl... Discos expecionales como los de David Bowie – The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, Todd Rundgren - Something/ Anything?, Stevie Wonder – Talking Book y Music of my mind, Elton John-Honky Château, Nick Drake – Pink Moon, Yes – Close to the Edge, Miles Davis – On the Corner, Neil Young – Harvest, The Rolling Stones – Exile on Main St, Curtis Mayfield – Super Fly, Raspberries- Fresh, Genesis – Foxtrot, Van Morrison - Saint Dominic's Preview, Deep Purple- Machine Head y Made in Japan, Joni MIttchell- For the roses, Tangerine Dream - Zeit, T Rex- The slider, Kevin Ayers- Whatevershebringswesing, la banda sonora The harder they come...
Sexy, funky but a bit undiverse
After getting albums by The Temptations, Sly and the Family Stone, The Crusaders, Isaac Hayes and The Isley Brothers, and not being convinced by either of them, I can finally say that there's a really good soul album out there. This is it. Not every song is a winner, and about half the album is just okay. But then we get some certified bangers, like the opening track, which is instantly danceable, What is this Feeling, Judy and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, and I am partial to handing out my first soul 4.
The title track is obviously a classic. If you closely focus on Green’s vocal performance on that track it’s pretty spectacular. All the other songs on the album are very good and it’s a solid listen throughout.
I especially like Let’s Stay Together; some songs are too slow: Old Time Lovin’, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, and Judy
Love a bit of soul and clearly he has an amazing voice
4 NaaaNuhnaNAAS out of 5
As quintessentially Sunday-ish as watching both Premier League games through a hangover. From the first horns of the title track, to the very end, this is just smooth and nice. Possibly too nice.
Awesome. Love Al Green. 4/5
This album has a lot of flow.
Seemingly timeless, soulful and fun. Doesn't overstay it's welcome, and every song carries a meaning and passion that's unmistakable. In a word: excellent. Top tracks: Let's Stay Together, Old Time Lovin', How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Awesome
Let's Stay Together is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement. Amazing track. The rest of the album is buttery smooth, and delightful, but nothing comes close to that title track. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the album. Loved it. 34 minutes of soul heaven.
Really great sound and vibes on this one, never got bored with it but it also didn't stand out the whole way through.
That jacket he has on the cover is sweet. Great soul. The album has a really good flow. Favorite songs were Let’s Stay Together, So You’re Leaving, What Is This Feeling, and How Can You Mend A Broken Heart.
A grand ole time.
Banger absolu. Un vrai classique- j'avais jamais pris le temps de l'écouter du début à la fin avant et vraiment je le referrai
The ultimate in smooth
Loved this album - what a great (smooth) voice Al Green had!
Album 364 of 1001 Al Green - Let's Stay Together Rating : 4/ 5 Great album. Always liked Al Green and was happy to see this pop up as album of the day. One to go to if soul is the goal.
Gran album
I'll admit I've sometimes confused Al Green for Marvin Gaye or vice versa, but that is meant as a compliment. Both are great and soulful singers that generally have a positive outlook and message. I sat in my car on this nice spring day eating my lunch just chilling to this album, windows down with a nice breeze and sunshine. Very pleasant afternoon break. Favorite track "Let's Stay Together" 4/5
Gets a bit repetitive, but otherwise a great sound
What Is This Feeling? None other than Old Time Lovin’ for my ears.
Loved this longer than I care to remember, on vinyl too. How does it sound so brilliant? What being horny really sounds like... doesn't get better than some of these tracks
Great to fall in love. Great to soothe a broken heart.
This album is pretty much perfect for what it is. not perfect for me, but for what it's going for it hits every mark
#1 Filmmusik Hit. Pulp Fiction. Klasse Soul.
Fabulous voice. Soul classic.
Short and sweet. Great vocals, good backing instrumentals and enjoyable throughout. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)
Downright classic soul. Opening with let’s stay together sets the tone. Other notable tracks include so you’re leaving, what is this feeling, never found a girl.
Smooth, but the title track carries a little
3.5 rounded up. Enjoyed the music and love finally getting some r&b/soul on this list
Classic
Classic
This album is a vibe. Very chill, and a good listen.
Such a nice mellow album. Love the singing & horns. Of course Let’s Stay Together is amazing song and loved the Mend a Broken Heart cover which is far superior to The Bee Gees.
The reverend Al Green is a great R&B Artist and this is a good representation of this genre and a good not great album but the man can sing the genre well enough and is a powerful singer if you check out some of his songs that aren’t on this album but to call him a poor man’s Marvin Gay Is a little harsh there are a lot of R&B artists that came along at the same time like a lot of artists did in other genres but there is room for him to shine on his own without comparisons 😎
Opener is a banger but the album sorta gets stale
the title track and beegees cover are the only real memorable tracks but it was an enjoyable listen
Gezellige soul van het type waar Quentin Tarantino ook wel raad mee wist. Opzetten als je nieuwe date komt eten bij kaarslicht, dan zit je avond geramd dacht ik zo.
Very soulful. Classic Reverend Al
Smooth like butter
A welcome departure from the usual fare, this album embodies the best of, and sometimes playful, yet sincerity of 70s soul.
Right from the opening lines from arguably his best song, this guy has it bad for his girl. This is the music that just makes you ache for the one you love. The kind of music you feel, while listening. The kind that make you want to run home and love up your girl. If I have to explain it, you don't get it. For those who know, who feel, this is just the best listening music. I am very familiar with Al Green. Love his voice and lyrically, this album lets you feel the power of the girl he loves, wants and can't live without. Great album. Absolutely loved my listens as well as the genre I let play through the day. How Do You Mend a Broken Heart is Bee Gees song, btw. Not quite as good as Al's version, but thanks for letting him perform. Another side note, folks from work ask for time to time what is my album of the day. My leasing Mgr has an Uncle, who is/was a drummer back in the day from the Grand Rapids area. When I said Al Green, his eyes lit up and said his Uncle would fill in as Al Green's drummer, occasionally. Never he was from Grand Rapids, MI. Loved the entire album, but my top 3, Let's Stay Together, La-La Love and I've Never Found a Girl. The line, Ain't no love like my baby's love. Yea, he's got it bad. 4
4 Smooth, classic R&B, with the title track in particular probably being one of the most definitive songs of both the genre and the ‘70s. It’s the kind of song that almost makes me wish that I could have lived through the decade - when I hear it, I imagine chilling in Eric Foreman’s basement stoned with a group of feathered hair buddies. It’s a really solid song, and while it does sound a bit dated, I would have to think there’s something wrong with you if you don’t find yourself grooving to it just a bit… and the great thing about this record is that the groove never really stops from there. Admittedly, it never quite reaches the same high of Let’s Stay Together, but there isn’t a single unenjoyable moment anywhere to be found - it’s just one blast of groove followed by another, and while a lot of it runs together, the vibe is so fun and absorbing that it never really matters. Though if you do listen closely, I do feel there’s a certain charm to be had with each track. For example, I absolutely loved the guitar work on Old Time Lovin’, as simple as it was (it gave me Maggot Brain vibes in some ways) and the horns on La-La For You. Also, while I wasn’t aware of this prior, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is apparently a Bee Gees cover - after going back and giving their version a listen, there’s no denying Al’s is the definitive version and totally his own. Short, but sweet listen, so I'll keep this review short, but sweet - great, classic album, the kind that feels like a staple of the genre. It’s probably not becoming any kind of all-timer for me, but it’s a really fun 34 minutes.
Oh yeah. Good listen. I knew the opener, of course, but everything was new. It’s a fun listen. Heart and soul.
Sexual, soothing, warm, music that soothes the soul. I can’t think of another artists that evokes that feeling. Barry White falls in that category too. This album is such a treat.
Unique sound. Couple of huge hits. Can’t go wrong with Al Green.
Beautiful southern/pop soul. Perfect love songs, production makes it sound as old as it is but the songwriting is timeless. Al Green is a master of comfort. Instant Classic. Definitely will revisit.
אבלום כל כך מנחם. קשה שלא להתמכר לחום והאהבה שיש במוזיקה של גרין.
4.5
4 out of 5. Old time loving prolly fave. Loved his voice loved the album
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just wish this was mixed a bit better because musically it's fantastic
I enjoyed this album start to finish. It had such passion in the music.
So much emotion felt through these songs.
popitusta taas. popitetaaan jeejee!! noh.. vähän paremmalta aikakaudelta... asiat vähän parempia tällöin (Le génocide de 1972 au Burundi). sielukas ääni, , tarkoittaa että raastaa korvia, kuin raspilla hioisi... hyvin samaa menoa koko 34 minuuttia, ei keksinyt ei päähän pistosta tullut herralle. kaikkea sitä joutuupi kestäämåån. how can you medn a broken heart
It is a sin that only one Rev AL Green Album is on this list. Unacceptable.
An old favorite and a blessing with which to start my day, thank you so much!
It was amazing!
Lot's of soul in this one
A couple of legendary songs (How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Let's Stay Together) with a solid vibe throughout. 4.5 stars.
A solid 4. One amazing single and the rest of the album sure is very nice.
Smash hit and excellent song LET'S STAY TOGETHER opens it up. Such a great beat. Spare horns are perfect, but no more than Green's vocals. Up, down, and all around. BG vocals also terrific...can you tell I love that tune? Kind of a dropoff for the 2nd cut LA-LA FOR YOU, although the horns come through to the rescue. I think the horns and the Hammond organ are my favorite parts of this LP. Classic early seventies soul. Other highlights: - I'VE NEVER FOUND A GIRL - HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART (perfect in every way: didn't know he wrote it) ⭐⭐⭐⭐ __________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 38 🎧 LPs left to review: 963 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 9 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 13 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 10
Some albums are just too short. I own this and it gets regularly played. What more of a recommendation does it need.
The guitar fucks so hard. Once again conceptualizing the different between soul and blues. This is a vinyl I’d hunt down
The man’s got the silkiest voice I’ve ever heard. Everyone knows let’s stay together, but I didn’t know how much variety and range he would bring to a single album. Loved every song on here, it felt like at times he got lost in the scat to the point where it just sounded like melodic whining or like he was on the verge of nutting for the last minute of the song.
Smooth lovely soul - not as memorable as other records but still a good one - feels more like a genre album rather than a generalist one. That said I’d be happy to dig jt out every now and again.
Good
Let's stay together is a classic song that has stood the test of time. Opening the album with that track sets a high bar. This whole album is the epitome of 70s soul music, his voice is great, smooth and soulful. You can't listen to this album without bobbing your head along to it. Great album
What a chill, dope album by Al Green. The subject matter is interesting too, since they are love songs, but several of them are about maintaining love, rather than the excitement of new love. The musical accompaniment is all bangers, and the production is excellent. It really brings the soul out of the instruments and sets it in the forefront of the album 4/5
Such a good voice.
Smooth soulful Al Green. Classy and timeless
Very good, I knew the title track but the rest were consistently a nice vibe.
Good vibes 8/10
Un excellent album de soul. Al Green est un artiste auquel je reviens toujours pour ces sentiments et cette groove sans flafla
It's relaxing, it's cool, it's unique, even tho I'm not a fan of that kind of music i liked it, it was soo different from de music i usually listen that i think it was really cool
Awesome
I was groovin’
can totally listen to this all day - but not all are tried and true staples
How can you not love this album? The first track is the obvious banger, but every single track grooves, never overstaying its welcome.
4/5. Smooth and jazzy R&B, Al Green uses his voice to guide the sound and rises and falls whenever he pleases. There is a rhythm to it but he changes so effortlessly that it feels random. A mechanical backing track, following the basics, are held backstage for his voice. It's mesmerizing at the very least, but sometimes it's hard to stay attentive. These are well written songs and in someone else's hands they can just be R&B pop but he decided that is not what is going to happen.
Smooth
Surprised at how much I enjoyed this album. Great counter to the stress of the day. Smooth, pleasant and easy to listen to.
Still a delightful listen. 50+ years later, this album, and this singer, still persevere.
Classic. I knew Let’s Stay Together but hadn’t listened to the album. Felt great
Nice
boah ich lieb de al green let's stay together isch absolut iconic. la la for you huuere schön chooords mann und blöser aaah. What is this feeling au sehr nice, bgvs hebed dure. das album isch das wo s dexys album gern wär. old time lovin meeega simpel aber schööö. fuck isch das geil let's stay together isch glaub mis lieblingsstuck aber allgemein das album strahlt so e allgemeini wärmi und zfrideheit uus..ich liebs backgroundvocals sind au super
Great sound, listened to this on a dark stormy day and it really hit the spot. Close to a 5 star pick, but doesn’t quite have the consistency to make it there while sticking to a similar sound throughout. Top tracks: Let’s Stay Together, So You’re Leaving, What Is This Feeling, It Ain’t No Fun To Me
I’m trying to work out my grading system. Wish I could do a half star. Super good front to back
The Reverend can sure sing.
Just a lovely piece of music, never quite hits the heights of the opening track again but doesn't need to; the vocals, the background music slowly becoming more focused, it all coming together, great
some great chilled back music. the melody can seem a little bit samey throughout but al green's voice is nice and soothing. the iconic title track brings it up to a 4.
Yeah, he's dynamite. I'm really at a 4.5, and leaning towards a 4 only because while Al Green is the quintessential smooth R&B singer that others are compared to, and rightly so, the material stays in the same lane throughout. A little variety would have gone a long way.
I love Al Green, but this isn't his best album. Yes, the title track is perfect as is How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, but there's a lot of filler on here. (Granted, Al Green's filler is better than most people's killer, but still.) On this album, the arrangements are a little too busy, the production is a little thin, and the songwriting isn't as tight as it would become. I wish they had chosen I'm Still In Love with You or Call Me, which are 10/10 albums. Another great choice would have been The Belle Album, which he produced himself (and played acoustic guitar!). So, if your opinion of this album is that it's inconsistent, give those other albums a spin. This is really more of a 3.5 but I'm rounding up because the two star tracks on here are so damn great.
Smooth. Cool.
i knew id get something from the 70s lets stay together- funky. 7. la la for you- the horns are good. it just makes you wanna dance. 7 so youre leaving- music. um its good 6 or 7 what is this feeling- the background singers are great too. 6 or 7 old time loving- gimme that old time religion. slower. its nice its more soulful i guess but im not here if im feeling it. 6 ive never found a girl- i got distracted. 6 how can you mend a broken heart- noooo 6 minutes... its whatever. 6 judy- violin. its nice. mid tempo. 6 or 7 it aint no fun to me- trumpet. just call out every instrument i hear. its fun. 6 favorite track- lets stay together
Good soul init
One smooth motherlover
Never heard of this before, but 1 second into the first song I knew I’ve heard my dad play it a million times.
Note to self: Buy this album on vinyl!
Funky & Smooth 7.8/10 Single: Let's Stay Together Hidden Gems: I've Never Found a Girl How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Good grooves, very jazzy. The tone shifts from the first half of the album to the second, somewhat starkly?
The Reverend's vocal stylings can best be described as 'soulful'. This album is good but like a lot of other artists of the era, his music is more aptly appreciated by a listen to his 'best of' collection.
Classic Soul
Good music!
GREAT morning vibes. This album is scratching an itch I didn't know I had. "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" is so devastatingly sad :(
Love in all its iterations. Some classic stirring tracks
the instrumentation really complements the vocals and i really enjoy this album!! you can hear how it's influenced other artists, and the strings especially remind me of janelle monáe
pleasant songs
Great!
Such soul, much lovely.
Never realized the depth of soul in his voice. The layer at which he blends with horns and BG singers
Very good stuff
How perfect is the title track? How great of a Bee Gees cover is Al Green's version of "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" for that matter? Those two pieces of musical magic would put any album on a list like this one. The rest of the album is, fine? Maybe Al Green was the rightful heir to Sam Cooke and Otis Redding in terms of great soul vocalists - and those two aforementioned songs alone suggest he's in their stratosphere - but I put him just a notch below. That's not to shit on his legend. It's just when compare this album as a whole to the classic albums on this list by Cooke and Redding, one can't help but hear a drop off. But who gives a shit. I love Let's Stay Together (the song) about as much as Quentin Tarantino apparently does.
Erstaunlich gut, kannte 2 Titel
5 4
Super solid vocals with tight grooves
it’s nice i like the somewhat jazzy feel unfortunately i cannot comment much more about the music bc i decided to combine resolutions and listened to this while running a mile and nearly died
Al green made great music about love. This album starts with a great song that is timeless. Many of the other songs on this album are what Al green embodies, Full of soul and love. That’s what makes him such a great artist and so easy to revisit. This is a solid album. 7.7/10
4.2 - It’s mind-blowing that Al Green was 25 when he recorded this. The timbre of his voice and the depth of emotion on songs like “How Can You Mend A Broken Heart” belie a character that most acquire over a lifetime. He’s truly an amazing singer. As the title track suggests, this is a soulful collection of songs about being and staying together with the person you love.
Like a warm hug
This is one of those albums you can sit back, relax and enjoy! Al Green's smooth soothing voice is the perfect way to spend an hour or so and the songs make me think about the reasons I love listening to music. I haven't listened to a lot of Green and this definitely won't be the last time. Solid!
Listened to this. Great album.
Great album. It's not really my genre but it's hard not to like this album.
Smooth.
Classic smooth soul
Great voice, great songs, very solid album. The vocal work and range on How Can You Mend A Broken Heart is unreal.
Al Green has an amazing voice. Some great songs here. Some maybe stick around too long.
Some real hidden gems there. Enjoyed!
4.5 stars
I don’t know what she decided but I would have never left Al after hearing this album. More of this please.
Liked it
Just short of classic, this is an excellent soul album. The title track is one of Green’s best, but the rest of the album is no slouch even if no other song reaches LSTs heights. Green’s voice pairs so well with the brass, it all seems effortless, but there’s complexity in these arrangements. Surprised to learn that Green wrote the majority of the songs (a la Sam Cooke), although the next two best after LST, I’ve Never Found a Girl and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, are excellent covers that Green makes his own. Also refreshing that this is only 30ish minutes long - it’s a perfect length, crisp, concise.
Very good album
This some baby making music.
Smooth soul and groove
Classic album. Saw him at HOB in Chicago 12 years ago.👌🏼
Love it. Chill, heartfelt. Less overt than Mayfield, but nonetheless a strong Gospel influence. Love, love, love. ❤️ Not a go-to genre for me, but not a bad song on it.
Like when you're sad in a beautiful way
4.5 stars. Really nice actually
Good soul record
Many of my generation will hs e grown up having first heard the Tuna Turner version of the title track. Though once you’ve heard the original you mainly wonder what the point in the cover was. Like many, the original cannot be surpassed. And the lush, horn infused songs continue in such a consistent way. An album that is surely more than just the sun of its parts. Just lovely.
Quite surprised that Al’s voice wasn’t the strongest. But this album was solid and a great listen.
If you ask me to describe classic R&B, I would describe this album.
Let's Stay Together I've Never Found a Girl How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
This is a fundamental soul album. The title track is first on the album and is clearly the best. Unfortunately the album never reaches those highs during the remaining tracks. Nevertheless, it is enjoyable throughout and is consistently engaging.
Liked it!
Short and sweet.
Silky smooth soul from a master. The title track is a classic. Al's version of How To Mend a Broken Heart surpasses the Bee Gees version. Rest of the album is quite solid. Would not complain if someone threw this on to wind down a party.
Short but sweet album from one of the all time great voices.
Lekker album om de week mee te beginnen!
First instinct is to be happy about this album then it starts and I remember that .... I don't actually love the title track that everyone seems to love. I don't dislike it! Just sorta meh - maybe I've heard it too much, and maybe I just think it's a little bland... With one exception* the rest of the album is much better - "So You're Leaving" for example has much more of a groove as do pretty much every one of the remaining cuts. Nice to hear the original "Ain't No Fun To Me" but I still lean towards Graham Central Station's version... I suppose if the famous title track is almost the worst cut on the album you've got a winner. 7/10 4 stars *that BeeGees cover is bad - plodding and seemingly endless.
Brilliant stuff - love the sound of the guitar and drums, voice fantastic if a little bit too falsetto for my taste give me Johnny cash any day
I like this. I guess it's heartbreak you can dance to. His voice is like an extra horn and is so saturated when he wants it to be. I'll be coming back for more.
Lyrics: Pros: Romantic Themes: The album is known for its romantic lyrics, with Al Green exploring the various facets of love, from the joyous to the melancholic. Poetic Sensibility: Green's lyrics are often poetic, showcasing his ability to convey deep emotions and connect with listeners on a personal level. Cons: Limited Diversity: While the romantic themes are beautifully explored, the album might lack thematic diversity, as it primarily revolves around love and relationships. Music: Pros: Soulful Vocals: Al Green's vocals are the highlight, characterized by a unique blend of smoothness and raw emotion. His falsetto is particularly distinctive and adds a layer of vulnerability to the music. Musical Arrangements: The instrumentation, featuring lush string arrangements and tight rhythm sections, complements Green's vocals perfectly. The arrangements are sophisticated yet accessible. Cons: Potential Predictability: Some critics argue that the musical style and arrangements, while undeniably excellent, may become somewhat predictable throughout the album. Production: Pros: Hi Records Quality: Produced by Willie Mitchell for Hi Records, the album benefits from the label's signature sound, characterized by warm, analog production that enhances the soulful elements. Balanced Mix: The album showcases a well-balanced mix of vocals and instrumentation, allowing each element to shine without overpowering the others. Cons: Limited Experimentation: Some listeners may find that the production, while high-quality, doesn't venture into experimental territory. It adheres to a classic soul sound without pushing boundaries. Themes: Pros: Universal Themes: Love and relationships are universal themes, making the album relatable to a broad audience. Green's exploration of these themes is timeless. Emotional Depth: The album delves into the complexities of love, offering a nuanced and emotionally rich portrayal of various aspects of romantic relationships. Cons: Potential Repetition: Given the album's thematic focus on love, there might be moments where the themes feel repetitive for some listeners. Influence: Pros: Enduring Legacy: "Let's Stay Together" has had a lasting impact on soul and R&B music, influencing subsequent generations of artists. Cross-Genre Appeal: The album's crossover success, reaching both R&B and pop audiences, attests to its broad influence. Cons: High Expectations: The album's influence can create high expectations for listeners, and some may find it challenging to appreciate its impact fully if they come to it with preconceived notions. In conclusion, "Let's Stay Together" is a soul masterpiece that excels in its romantic themes, soulful vocals, and polished production. While some might find aspects of the album predictable or thematically narrow, its enduring influence and timeless quality make it a cornerstone of Al Green's career and a significant contribution to the soul genre.
Smooth Al Green. Great for a chill night with a special someone.
Old School Soulful music. Decent amount of good tunes on the album.

Super-sophisticated seventies soul. Title track is 20 out of 5, rest of the album a lovely listen.
First track is the best track, but it was great easy listening
Erg groovy album van mr al, kende een paar nummers. Maar de rest van het album was net zo goed.
Heerlijk
Good
Starting off with one of the greatest love songs ever written, Let's Stay Together mostly keeps itself together on the basis of that and plenty other gems. In lesser hands, it would have crumbled and languished in purgatory but Al Green's sheer magnetism and approach to his craft prevents this from being sophomoric. One of the bedrocks of rhythm and blues that still persists to this day. Favorites: Let's Stay Together, So You're Leaving, Old Time Lovin', I've Never Found a Girl, How Do You Mend a Broken Heart, Judy.
This was a jam. I don't know much Al Green, but that voice... those jams... man, I'll listen to more of this.
Short and sweet
Let's Stay Together is a classic and my favorite track. No bad songs on this album and Al Green shows why he's a legend.
This is such a beautifully made album through and through! Al Green has such a soulful voice and his lyrics are beautiful! The instrumentals here are also oh so groovy and well crafted :0
Good stuff quite groooooooovy Favorite song: let’s stay together
Love AG, and actually didn’t realize that Let’s Stay Together was his only #1 hit, that surprised me. I like his upbeat stuff a bit more but I could listen to him read the phone book.
Smooth
Kicks off with the strongest track but the entire record is smooth and an enjoyable listen.
Sexy, great voice
Oh man, title track is one of my favorite songs ever. Was in my wedding. Still not sure I've listened to the album front to back. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is also such a good one! It's so good. I mean easy 4, but are there enough other songs, cohesion, to make this album a 5? If I gave Otis a 4, this will have to be a 4 too :( sorry Al!
Mad at society for shoving the first song down my throat when the last half of the album is way better 4 stars for the jacket alone
nice chill soul music
Let’s stay together is the peak of the album but the rest is decent. As others have said just quintessential 70s soul music. It’s good - having a hard time deciding if it’s a 3+ or a 4-
I get the artistry but it was a bit single tone
Strong 4 stars. I'm not sure if this is his most fun album, or the one i can sing along to the most, but I find myself not being able to skip any of these songs.
Al Green can basically do no wrong with his music, but I’ve always thought you could do better with a greatest hits sampler as an intro to his work. If you can’t find one, this one’s great as well
Un LP clásico del R&B y el soul. Con un sonido suave y una voz sumamente potente, Al Green logra atraparte en poco más de 30 minutos, con éxitos que suenan tan clásicos como frescos. Un real indispensable de la música afroamericana.
Played it on loop at work, started making out with the photocopier, things got steamy
Beautiful
What a start!
I was surprised to actually really like this album. The first two tracks were standouts but the whole thing was enjoyable.
Top tier 70s R&B. Rivals "What's Going On" for me as the best from the era.
When this album goes on it’s time for the kids to go to bed. Very good album, fun to listen to.
Very vibes
Lucked into a sweet Hi records original vinyl of this one. Let's Say Together (overplayed) and Broken Heart (weepy Bee Gees) are the only ones I can't get behind a 100%. The album tracks are fantastic.
Have loved the title track for a long time. The slower version of Mend a Broken Heart was also great. Wish there was some up tempo tracks but it’s a good album.
How can one album make you feel so good and want to get up and dance?
very consistent sound through the album, great classic soul sound
Al Green is just sooooo damn smooth. The title tracker is the opener and probably the highlight but the rest of the album is very consistent. Fantastic vocals, the guitar groves from start to finish. 8.0/10
Crisp drums all over. This is some Harlem nights love and loss music. Mature love makin music. Favs : Let’s Do It, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Judy Least fav : LaLa for you Overall : 91/100
Let's Stay Together - 8.5/10 La-La For You- 9/10 So You're Leaving- 9/10 What is This Feeling - 8/10 Old Time Lovin' - 7.5/10 I've Never Found a Girl - 7.5/10 How Can You Mend a Broken Heart- 7.5/10 Judy - 7.5/10 It Ain't No Fun to Me - 8/10 TOTAL - 72.5/90
Great mix of sad, soulful, and sexy. Top songs: “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart”, “It Ain’t No Fun to Me”, “Let’s Stay Together” Rating: 7/10
Great
4.5
This should be a 5 star album for me, but I left wanting a little more. Not sure what exactly, definitely something.
3.5/5
Tremendous, interesting chord progression of La La for You. Deeply, perfectly funky So You’re Leaving.subtle arpeggiated guitar parts. Gently flicked chords. Lovely beds of organs. Green’s voice is front and center, as is right.
Calmed me down during a stressful day at work 4/5
Far too cool for school.
solid 4.3 out of 5. some of the tracks seem to meld, but it starts off and finishes strong, hitting a couple high notes on its way there.
Great Soul Record!
The title track is transcendent. The rest of the album is good, but feels low-key and unexciting. I expect I would feel differently if I had been around when it was released.
Very sexy. Great
Great. A legend.
A beautiful album that can beautifully underscore a get-together without taking center stage. The progressions make you want to move when they’re turned up, but the recording quality shows a bit of its age. Also, not the most dynamic of albums. LIBRARY: Yes!
Best Song: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. This song is the perfect combination of powerful and gentle. Worst Song: It Ain't No Fun to Me. A bit too rock and roll for me. Too much of a deviation from what made the rest of the album so great. Overall: Really good soul like this always amazes me at how it's able to simultaneously sound so tight musically while presenting such a loose and relaxed vibe. Nothing feels out of place, every decision feels intentional, and that meticulousness sounds as the perfect backdrop for Green's softly delivered vocals.
Really nice and smooth
Great album! Smooth, soulful tunes. Top 3 tracks off the album are Let’s Stay Together, What Is This Feeling, and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. -Klep
Goed!
Classic R&B
The man is smoothness defined.
Banger
La 1 y la 7 cancoon son buenísimas y las de más también son de alto nivel y el álbum es un álbum de alto rango entre todos así que le doy un 8 o 9 de 10 , es muy bueno
Beautiful album 4/5
Awesomely pure 70's R&B/Soul. Laying down a groove with a voice so smooth. Not something I would personally listen to regularly, but I can appreciate great music and this is it.
Soul
man that voice is like butter. shot his load too early though. when you've got an all time worldie track you really need it later in the album because everything played after it just isn't as good.
Sounds like Jamie Theakston being bummed to death by a pack of wild dogs. What more can you want from a record?
Simon Cowell has run out of Listerine
Brilliant listen, loved the whole album. Started off strong and just enjoyed the whole 34 minutes running time. Not a genre I'm familiar with but this has reaffirmed why I wanted to start this journey in the first place.
Great album. Let’s stay together is one of my favorite songs. Al Green has such a great voice and does a great job on The Bee Gees song How do you mend a broken heart .
this album is just as smooth and delightful as i had hoped. like, buttery smooth. i'd be surprised if it wasn't one of the smoothest albums on this project! because of al green's voice and the album's tone, let's stay together is a delightful, joyful listen, even with some sorrowful songs. really, al green covering "how can you mend a broken heart" by the bee gees seems rather on brand. i was so charmed by this album, and i'm so happy i listened to it.
This is a short, sweet, and REALLY good soul album. Each song is given incredible care and depth. Al's voice is outstanding, full, and emotional on every track. Like the best soul singers, Al Green makes you feel what he's feeling. Most of the tracks here are written by Green, too! He's definitely a triple threat on this album. Coming in at just over 34 minutes, this album leaves you satisfied but wanting more...a good place to end up, I imagine!
Lovely stuff, smooth and easy
Excellent Soul Album with one of my favourite songs- let’s stay together
I strongly recommend against trying to sing Let’s Stay Together at Karaoke. Al Green can sing and has an amazing range. I don’t recall hearing this album before. He handles different styles of songs very well. There is lots to enjoy besides the hits.
7/10
Till och med bättre än hans bilar.
Superb. Such a great voice allied to some great, understated but funky soul. Title track obviously brilliant but rest of album is more than decent
Great album, but Al Green is a shitty human.
Nice!
Really good R&B album. Even as background music, it got me moving a bunch of times.
Loved
He's got a good voice alright.
Al's got soul, that's for sure. Quite familiar with this one, it's an album I'll throw on a few times every year. Pretty solid all the way though but Let's Stay Together is a clear high point, what a track. Old Time Lovin' and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (didn't realize this was a BeeGees cover until now) are other highlights.
A pleasant travel into a soul classic.
p283. 1972. 4 stars Prime slice of early 70s soul, with one of the great voices on absolute top form. Point deducted for dated production.
I enjoyed the nuance on this record, particularly with Let's Stay Together. Green's voice and the instrumental backing complement each other rather than competing for attention. First listen might sound like background music, but subsequent listens had me stopping what I was doing to appreciate this one. Green excels at taking relatable themes (each stage of a relationship) and defining those feelings through each track. Highlight: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - honest and delicately sung.
