Loved this! One of my faves actually— I could listen to this on repeat 🤩
Let's Stay Together is a classic song, so there's no debate there. As for the rest of the album, it was a pleasant listen.
Amazing. Frantically added so many of the songs to so many FEZ playlists... Sexy, sweet, warming. Loved it, 4.8.
4.5 do fucking smooth
Well made, class act, brilliant album
Classic <3
I'm not sure what's going on with that cover. Poor guy looks like he's having a stroke as they're taking the picture. Then they added the slime green drippy font. The whole thing is just weird. Let's Stay Together is a song that is as close to perfection as possible. That makes it a heck of a way to open an album. The rest of the tracks try valiantly to live up to that standard, but don't quite make it. I'm not sure it's even possible to match that opener though. This was a fantastic listen and I'm happy to say that this is an album you should listen to before you die.
Now we're talking baby! Just fantastic
A first listen start to end, absolutely brilliant and look forward to the second
Enjoyed this one.
go00000000000000ooooood
I really enjoyed 70s soul music so it makes sense that this is one my favourite albums ever. Every song is solid and is memorable on their own but “Let’s stay together” is just the full package and that’s why it’s my first 10/10 song. It’s just so good. Al Green is just talented in every sense of the word.
Wow.
Two drummers, no waiting.
Love this album, especially his cover of "How do you mend a broken heart." What a voice! He's got an easy yet emotional style. So good. I owe my little brother for turning me on the Al.
Willie Mitchell, at the peak of his powers, making great, luxurious, spacious settings for the magnificent Al Green to croon and purr and plead his way through them. Fabulous songs. Wonderful grooves. Wonderful songs. Terrific performances from everyone involved. A classic
Great album! Crazy personal life story. Hot grits and suicide.
really nice gentle soul music, very relaxing - such a great voice
Pure bliss. Listening to the Reverend Al Green is like a religious experience for me when it comes to this album
Good album. Always loved Al Green.
One of the best albums of all time
Such an awesome, smooth voice.
LETS GOOOOO. One of my favorite albums. “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” has a very special place in my heart. I really love this album.. comfort album!
Such a good soul/r&b album. One of the greats in his prime.
Sexy
Mmm
Beautiful voice, beautiful album.
# Playlist track - I've never found a girl # Notes - Excellent opening! - All around great album. Nice metals, great vocals and a great listen overall.
Fantastic…the Voice, the Melody, Soul from his finest… 11/10 👍
The album gains a lot when listened to without stress, without distractions, without rush. Just me and the music. Yes please
Have heard many of these songs, but not all, and have never listened to this as a full album. The whole album is fantastic.
Half an hour of funky tracks with incredibly smooth vocals. I'm not sure I would have stayed on board for much longer, but this was exactly the right amount.
The title track is awesome but how can that be Al Green's only number one single? The man oozes soul and his voice can make you cry. His remake of the Bee Gees How Can You Mend a Broken Heart gives me goosebumps. He puts the slow in slow jams. Kudos also to Willie Mitchell for matching the musical tempo and instrumental style with Green's vocal style. It's perfect. Not a single weak song on this album. Other songs that really tugged at me were La-La for You (awesomely high-pitched), What is This Feeling (love the la la las and his vocals near the end of the song), Old Time Lovin (pure magic), and It Ain't No Fun to Me (sultrier, livelier crooning - uhh yeah). Loved this album.
HELL YEAH THIS ALBUM IS AWESOME. What a great first listen, didn't know what to expect but was loving this all the way through. Al Greens voice is lovely and the production on this is brilliant. Had me in the feels, making me wanna feel about someone the way Al does, God dayum. Fav songs: - Lets Stay together - What is this feeling - Old time lovin - How can you mend a broken heart - Judy - it ain't no fun to me
Absolutely great vibe. Amazing voice. Very much replayable for a laid back, chill kind of day. Solid 5.
Soulful, smooth, and sexy
Classic R & B. Learn from the master.
Jeez this guy can sing. What a collection of amazing performances.
very nice
Al Green is an all time. That voice is top tier
Al Green is my favorite R&B singer. Got hooked on his music thanks to my mom as a kid. I was ecstatic to see this on the list, so I broke out my vinyl copy and turned up the volume. An absolute classic
I like the way he's looking at me in the album cover. Very handsome lad. My only gripe is the green day looking Al Green font
Whatchu you know about this nephew 👴🏿
No guns no drugs no naked women just good music
Just one of the greatest performers to grace god's green earth no biggie
Al Green's voice was both effortless and emotive. The music is velvety smooth funk that's been completely soaked in soul. I really enjoyed the sound of this one.
Nice, easy listen.
Sublime
Rating: 10/10
Classic from the Reverend.
Damn this is fantastic. Going to be on repeat for a while. Always thought soul got a little repetitive but this is just something else. Feels like a wonderful little Sunday afternoon album
Oh yes! So into listening to this album all the way through. Obviously know about Al Green, never sat to listen through a full album. this is so good. I gotta throw this kind of stuff on during the weekends.
This is fantastic. Put me in a good mood & I added it to my work playlist.
Love
Great album
Instant classic from front to back, no skips . Now this is an album I needed to hear.
I'm familiar with him and like the first song.
No notes
Great album, wonderful songs, Al Green is so fab! Sent me on an Al Green binge. So much good stuff!
Cool cool cool
Cool classic, and the best part of my day today.
What a pleasant spring album. The only criticism I can come up with (obnoxiously) is that the first song is just TOO good and the album's remainders—stellarly-smooth in their own right—just can't keep up. The Bee Gees cover comes closest. All in all, a 5-star album I could eternally keep in my old car's CD player without ever tiring.
I own this on vinyl, original pressing. Al Green has a soulful voice and delivery that make you want to just sit down and relax.
What a fucking pimp
How can you mend a broken heart sounds SOOOO similar to natural high by bloodstone. Banger album
This was a great listen. Almost soothing in a way.
Classic.
Love it
Wonderful album. The lead song is iconic, the rest are just great.
What can you say about this album other than it's one of the greatest soul\R&B albums of all-time!
Real liked it beginning to end
This was great. Such fun with great songs and vocals.
GREAT!
Amazing. So much soul on one album.
A classic album. Not the best soul album of the 70s but certainly contains some of the best classic soul songs. Always nice to hear.
Fantastic. Beautiful and happy
There's a reason Al Green became the Rev. Al Green: His voice was anointed by God.
Buttery
I am really enjoying this album so far!
Timeless and beautiful music.
One of the all time greatest soul albums! Loved every second!
Probably first soul album I’ve ever listened to and it’s awesome, great for lowering my blood pressure lol
I had forgotten this one!
One of the great R&B albums from that era.
🔥
Perfect album- no notes
"Let's Stay Together" by Al Green is a soulful masterpiece that captivates listeners with its enchanting melodies and heartfelt lyrics. Each song on the album delivers a unique experience, from the joyful rhythms of "La-La for You" to the melancholic reflections of "So You're Leaving." Green's soulful voice infuses every track with emotion, evoking nostalgia in "Old Time Lovin'" and grooving effortlessly in "I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do)." The album reaches its pinnacle with the iconic "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" where Green's vocals soar, delivering a powerful message of love and resilience. Throughout "Let's Stay Together," Green's playful charm shines in tracks like "Judy," while the bluesy undertones of "It Ain't No Fun to Me" add depth to the album's sonic landscape. Ultimately, "Let's Stay Together" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with audiences, showcasing Al Green's enduring talent and musical legacy.
Lovely
Awesome album, 9/10 solid oldies r and b
This is a proper late night classic soul album, a beautifully played and sung collection of love songs, not least the iconic title track. And this dropped just in time for Valentine's day! Perfect feel good music!
The most beautiful song in the history of all space and time. It never gets old. It’s always a joy. Nothing is better than this song. Supremely romantic. Soulful and tangible. I could listen to this forever. And that’s just the first track. Everything here is perfect. Al Green is the fucking best.
Smooth as peanut butter.
Aww yeah. That’s the stuff. That was a perfect Friday afternoon listen. If I wasn’t an Al Green fan already I certainly am now. Songs added to Spotify: 3
Reverend Al rules!
Staple.
also February 5, 2024 HL: title track, "So You're Leaving", "I've Never Found a Girl", "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" First things first, that first track is a CLASSIC 2nd round of "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" in the last ~3 weeks? I think this one's an improvement Item 3: this is just banger after banger
Best soul I've heard in this playlist. Let's Stay Together is a classic and the rest of this album is just sooo good too. Lovrd every second of it.
4.5
Oh hell yeah
It’s Al Green. The Hi Rhythm Section is as good as it gets.
What a beautiful album. I love his voice
Great album. I hope that more of the selections are like this
Nothing ever beats old time soul. Old kind of loving was a surprise hit for me. I was already a fan of. How can you mend a broken heart from the movie the book of (Eli), so that was a welcomed return, but having listened to the full album, excellent peace of work and art, the album started to fall off a little bit for me after how can you mend a broken heart but it’s not like it was bad
Really great album. Downloaded it to the phone.
This and Call Me are pretty close to perfect. Don’t know why the Hi Records band don’t get the same reverence the Stax house band do, everything has such a great groove to it. The mix is bizarre - snare and hi-hat and horn stabs are really far forward, the brilliant guitar and organ are really low, bass practically hardly there - but it leaves so much space for his amazing voice. He never has to stretch to make himself heard, so it lets him be much more restrained. Then, when he does push his voice it really stands out, love the mic distortion, just sounds like a great band in a room. The songs are all strong, with two absolute classics in the title track and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. The only criticism is the truly awful cover art. Got a transcendent soul singer with a killer record? I know a brown pebble dash wall we can stand him in front of!
Lets Stay Together I think I’ve ever only listened to his greatest hits, rather than any of his albums. The title track is a classic for a reason. You hear it so much that it’s easy to forget how good it is. I really love the sound of the album - the ‘minimal’ band - drums, bass, piano/organ and guitar only - augmented by female backing vocals, some lovely string arrangements and great horns. And of course the voice is just so so good - obviously that’s what he’s known for but it really is superb, so versatile. Overall it’s exactly what you’d expect from a classic early 70s soul record. Melodic ballads and heartache, with some uptempo gospel influenced bangers. A little bit of grit here and there to complement the honey. Let’s Stay Together, So You’re Leaving, the cover of How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Judy, all great. It Ain’t No Fun to Me is banger. It’s great - not necessarily groundbreaking but exactly what an album like this should be. I can see myself listening to this a lot. Already listened to it twice this morning. Makes me want to check out more of his albums from this period. Somewhere between a 4 and a 5, probably closer to 5, so will round up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Pinnacle soul, lovely voice and a powerhouse of an album.
Rhythmic, soulful, classic, seductive- this album has it all! Except an ending. For all his many talents, Al Green cannot end a song.
A smooth, soulful, groovy album filled with R&B and Gospel engery. Al Green's gentle-yet-captivating vocals shine bright, with plenty of improvisational singing and falsetto runs. Band is collaborative and jammy, featuring some of the great session musicians of the time. The organ and horn parts in particular help define the brassy and warm sound that permeates the whole record, giving it a slightly gainy sound that is rich and classic. Guitar work is surprisingly dynamic, and accents Al Green in a special way. This album is a smooth listening experience. Stand out tracks include "Let's Stay Together", "Old Time Lovin'", and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart".
Not much music can pull me away from my worries like Al's can. His authentic voice captures the true essence of loving in a language both alone and universally understood. While Al's most popular "Let's Stay Together" leads the album, it could stand without the song and I'd find the album just as moving. If you don't want to smooch someone you love and hold them tight after listening to this album, you're without soul.
Kind of exactly what I needed today....The entire album is just so goddamn cool and smooth as silk.
Fuck yes Al Green, I cant say enough good things about his music. Amazing top to bottom. I heard my first Al Green song on my way home from a night class in the middle of winter. Just me and Al Green driving home on a snowy highway in my shitbox car.
Perfection from top to bottom. Al Green is the man
Love it
did he stay together with this girl? IDK i dont listen very intently, but at a surface level he definitely was spitting some game
Very good similar to the Isley Brothers album. I love funk and soul music so this is right up my alley.
This is such a good soul album. Al Green is a fantastic singer, and all the songs are great. I was making a mental list of my favorites while listening, but it ended up being like 2/3 of the album. Overall just an amazing album.
Love this album. Top 100 for me!
Classic soul album. Songwriting, singing, instrumentation are all fantastic. Easy 5/5.
I actually really enjoyed this album (and whatever music came up after it ended). Will have to check out more in this style
Fun and mellow.
Супер кайфовый соул альбом Жаль нету на яндекс музыке
A near perfect album. Got to love that Hi Records sound.
This whole album got me thinking about her again, and it's one of the best soul albums I've heard probably ever. Absolutely gorgeous.
Zuckersüß und mit Kopfhörern ein Traum
so fucking good
Smooth, soulful, solid gold from start to finish.
Un album qui s'ouvre sur "Let's stay together" ne peut pas être mauvais. Ca tombe bien, il ne l'est pas. "How can you mend a broken heart" est un monument également, "Old time lovin'" vaut également l'coute. Le reste est très très bon, sans être au niveau de ces deux là, mais c'est une écoute qui fait du bien.
If someone asked me with which album should he start listening soul I would recommend this album
Can’t beat Al Green’s voice with horns and an electric organ. Classic and sexy. Baby making music
Let’s Stay Together was better than I could have imagined. Incredibly soulful and beautiful! It has reignited my love for soul and will be listening to again.
I love it so much
Love it. Every song is good - which is what I ideally want from an album - and there's a couple of classics. I only heard this for the first time a few years ago (I remember listening to it on chilled out long runs) and was like, "Where has this been all my life?" I don't have a lot to say about it, just: Great! Brilliant! Fandabbiedozie!
Incredible!
Loved it!!!
Perfection
Smooth, soulful & beautiful
Amazing album. It's a pity I didn't give this a chance earlier.
Silky smooth - a lovely listen! Fave tracks - "Let's Stay Together" and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" are both absolutely sublime. Of the tracks I wasn't as familiar with, "Eli's Game" stood out too....
Greatest album I love Al green
Awesome
Very easy listening. Couple of bangers and leaves you in a very good mood after listening
Top notch soul
Such a good listen on a rainy day like today!
Listen on a date after a homemade meal for best results.
Title song is a classic. Album overall is really wonderful. Relaxing, enjoyable. Great for a night in and a wine of glass. Romantic.
Great album! Not a miss and doesn't overstay it's welcome!
Nice and chill. Would be good to play on a lazy summer day.
Classic. Buy v
Awesome record.
The smooth voice and mellow instrumentals of this album make for one of Al Green’s best. Top to bottom there were no tracks I ever intended to skip.
Great sounding gospel roots soul all time classic!
Great album!
smooth, silky, sensational
Excellent album as expected from one as legendary as Al Green, I could listen to his voice for hours.
How can you not love this record. It's just such a great vibe and so much fun to listen to. It has songs that grab you but also songs that just exist in the background like a lovely little soundtrack to life.
That was an experience that everyone should have
Sensational
Classic album. One of the best soul records ever. I use it to teach my drumming students how one beat can be used on a ton of songs.
A true masterpiece
Fantastic sound -- just great. Worth finding on vinyl.
some lovely soul, really nice vibe for a monday morning
A whole vibe. Not a bad song on the album and obviously let’s stay together is an all-time classic
SOOOO good. Grooves so hard
Jepps dette er jo et knallbra album
WHY SO SHORT?!?: I loved this album. Al Green is a magical man with that soothing voice which is just comforting to listen to and when the backing vocals come in behind it makes for a beautiful combination of voices which is just what you need to make this an amazing record. Listening to this I just felt I wanted more and more, 40 minutes (I think it was that) isn't nearly long enough. I could listen to this for hours.
It's Al Green. Nuff said really.
love a bit of al
A classic, Feel good album.
wonderful
Great stuff
Classic R&B. Love Al Green
I love the sound of Al Green's voice. There's nothing to fault this album. Absolutely love it.
Pure good vibes
Amazing !!!
Excelente
Great album, every song is good. Wish it was longer, though.
all time classic grooves
Highlights: Let's Stay Together, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, I've Never Found a Girl Leave Em's: Judy Overall Thoughts: Al Green epitomizes soul music in its golden age. His voice is great and the dated production really works well to create the old school soul feel. He displays his musical range on this album from slow heartbreak ballads to upbeat love songs, and he does them all well. There is a reason that this album is one of his most critically acclaimed, and I don't feel like I can add a whole lot of new ways to iterate that this album is wonderful. This record makes me fond of a time that I never experienced and makes me wish that I had been there. Score Breakdown: 4.111 & 5 -> 4.556
"Let's Stay Together" is the fourth studio album by American soul singer and songwriter Al Green and a follow-up to his moderately successful "Al Green Gets Next to You." The album was produced by Willie Mitchell who also co-wrote with Al several songs. It marked the beginning of Green's clasic period of critically acclaimed albums and was also a commercial succes hitting #8 on the US pop charts and debuting at #1 on the soul charts. Horns open the title track "Let's Stay Together." Green's voice goes from falsetto to whisper. Strong female backing vocals. It doesn't get much more soulful than this. It was a song that also put in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress for its artistic significance. Green uses his falsetto throughout "La-La For You." Romantic horns and subtle guitar. "What Is This Feeling" is more uplifting with the horns. Green's adds crooning with his falsetto. More solid backing vocals. Green covers Eddie Floyd's "I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You)." Layered horns open. This time backing male vocals. And besides the open track, the highlight of the album is his cover of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." A gentle version with guitar, organ and strings. Green whispers and builds the song ending with him shouting. Just fantastic. This album shows the full range of Al Green's voice from whispering to falsetto to crooning to screaming. Horns drive the melody in most cases with the band laying down the rhythm. Prominent and strong baking vocals. This just oozes soul. Hard to see anyone not liking this to some extent.
A beautiful noise. 'Let's stay together' and 'How can you mend a broken heart' stand out a mile, but it's all a very easy and pleasant listen.
This one comes out of the gate HOT and maybe dips slightly right after but man this thing is great start to finish.
Perfect.
Love that sound so much
- Only heard the title track before but that song is one of the best of all time - Rest of it is really good as well, Bee Gees cover is better than the original - Overall just really, really good, not a bad song on it - Fav songs: Let's Stay Together, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, What is This Feeling
im a big fan of this kind of music actually so i enjoyed it a lot!
There is so much soul and feeling in this album. Love his voice, combined with the "simple" backgrounds. La-la for you was my biggest find from this album
This album has me ready to shoot the most audacious shot of my life. Favorite track: I've Never Found a Girl
Just a beautifully relaxing soul album. Let’s stay together is straight heat
Great album. Really smooth listening.
I attribute my good mood yesterfsy ti this album. I love it so much I listened to it all day
This one is a classic. Not a bad song on the album. Really loved listening to this one multiple times throughout the day. Nothing bad to say about it. 5/5. Standout Tracks: Let's Stay Together, La-La for You, So You're Leaving, What Is This Feeling, Old Time Lovin', How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, It Ain't No Fun to Me
I really enjoyed this soulful album. Highlights were "So You're Leaving" and an amazing performance of the Bee Gee's ""How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" I loved this.
I will gladly attend the church of Al Green any day! So much soul!
This felt like a smooth, creamy, sexy massage for the soul today. Perfection.
Love it! The title track is one of my favorite songs. Al's take on the Bee Gee's How Can You Mend A Broken Heart? is a great remake of a great song. Loved the whole buttery smooth perfection of it!
This is worth five stars for the opening track alone.
smooth, easy listening w/ lots of classic songs. great album!
Two all-time great songs here, title track and the cover of "How can you mend a broken heart". The rest is also quite good and never disappoints.
A timeless recording not just for the power and versatility of Al Green’s vocals, but because of how producer Willie Mitchell and the Memphis musicians create the perfect grooves to showcase his genius. Essential.
Fantastic album. I love let’s stay together and he has a beautiful voice. 9./10
This one gets there for the title track alone. Al Green (and Willie Mitchell) were really hitting their stride. The arrangements are exceptional throughout. The horns are perfect, never overpowering the song. Al Green's vocals manage this trick as well - sometimes a whisper sometimes earnest, but always soulful and awesome. Extra points for what may be the best Bee Gees cover ever,
Hadn’t heard this album or most of the songs. Really liked it. His vocals are great!
Excellent. I only knew the title track before listening to this, but all of it was great. His voice is like silk and the arrangements under him do a wonderful job supporting his voice. The Bee Gees cover was well done too. This music just feels good.
Great vibes!
Classic
Outside of the first track, I don't know any of these.
Wow damn that entire album was the definition of chill and I loved it. Head bobbing, eyes closed, easy grooving. Every instrument works together in such impeccable harmony, and everything feels right in the world at least for these 34 minutes.
I have no qualms with this album. Incredibly enjoyable from start to finish.
Excellent
smooth af
Solid Gold.
Who do you love? Al Green. So let's stick together. I will be listening to this some more.
Let's stay together is an all time vibe.
So romantic! Even the ones about being broken-hearted or getting left ("So You're Leaving," "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"), are still so romantic and feel-good. This is another one of those "making dinner with your romantic partner" albums. Beautiful. Titular song is my fave. I don't know why the font of the album art is drippy like that, but hey, it's the 70s.
How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
Oh, fuck yes. This is my shit. There's nothing about this record that I dislike. The rhythm section is tight, the melody players are tasteful without resorting to simplistic cliche lines, the songs are good, the mix is perfect, the horns and production are well thought out and clear without overpowering... but the real joy here is the warm, smooth, soulful voice. I could listen to Al sing the dictionary.
Loved this album. Great album for a Friday when you're needing something upbeat to wiggle around to!
I challenge you to listen to this album and not sway with the beat. Al Green’s voice combines well with the horns on each song. His backup singers fill in perfectly and he never over sings. He holds back just enough His cover of ‘How To Mend A Broken Heart’ is almost hypnotic in its slow pace. This album made me stop and listen. This isn’t background music. Green holds your attention with his interpretation of each song. A masterpiece
This is the pinnacle. Love this record.
Vraiment reop bon, j’adore et j’ajoute a ma liste de favoris. 5
Sweet sweet ear romance
Oozing with sensuality, soul, and serious vocal chops. I was bopping my head the whole drive home.
Inroduces to title cut from Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Can’t wait to hear the rest. So far so good. I dig the horns.
I love his voice and the way he does his own backing vocals. It's like he's dancing with himself.
Really enjoyable wanted it to last longer
Overall a strong album with several highlights. A lot of the deep cuts were solid, even if they are not as popular as the title track. I highly recommend this project if you are looking for some chill 70’s soul. Favorite songs: Let’s Stay Together, La-La for You, So You’re Leaving, Old Time Lovin’, It Ain’t No Fun to Me Least favorite: Judy
Excellent
Amazing voice. Love the rhythm section - the grooves are so heavy. Great songs I love his performance of The Bee Gees tune.
I love everything about this record. His voice is amazing, al Jackson’s drumming is great, the horns are so tight and the organ is sweet. And the way it’s recorded is just so warm and beautiful. The only critique I could think of is that the lyrics maybe aren’t the most interesting but who cares!! This record vibes like no other
If I had a wedding song, Let’s Stay Together would have been on a short list. He’s voice is so cool. And look at that album cover. Only criticism is I feel like the ends of all of the songs could be a bit more intentional.
extremely groovy motown / soul feel, very Marvin Gaye esque. also i love his jacket on the cover where can i get that lmao 1) Absolutely loving that subtle bass on Let's Stay Together 2) Ooh the call and response on La-La for You, definitely would go on to inspire that same technique in Hip Hop / Rap 3) Nice trumpets on So You're Leaving Me 4) THE BEBOP ORGAN ON WHAT IS THIS FEELING OMG 5) Old Time Lovin' was pretty good 6) Dang that cello (?) violin?? whatever it is at the start of I've Never Found a Girl is very reminiscent of Wovoka 7) How Can You Mend a Broken Heart's harmony parts reminds me of something and I can't quite think of what it is 8) Judy is great. hehe doody 9) More horns !!!
si
I always perceived soul as tasteless pop music of the 70s, with some highlights throughout. Beyond Marvine Gaye and Stevie Wonder who innovated what was possible with soul, there were little artists who could make something of the genre, but Al Green is the exception of an artist who could make albums of pure soul (no progressive shenanigans) and no filler. Whenever I want to chill and take a break from rock or high energy pop or electronic, Al Green is typically one of the first artists who come to my mind, and the pinnacle of his work "Let's Stay Together" hits the spot in just about every way. Everything is spot on. Highlight is Al Green's energetic and emotional voice, always pleasing to the ear and never boring, especially when he pulls off his falsetto. Huge fan of the back vocals, both Chalmers's support and the gospel-like female vocals. Horns are used sparingly but their delivery is well-received. Rhythm section ensures each song is diverse and maintains its groove, incorporating funk while staying focused and consistent. The strings and back vocals come together so well in "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart." You know they did something right when you hear the song a million times and you're shocked to see it's actually 6.5 minutes long. As for the song themselves, obviously starts off strong but I usually don't get into it until the groove of the 4th song. I'm really into the next few songs, but I feel like the album should end with "How Can You Mend" but "Judy" would also working as an appropriate epilogue. I guess I just wasn't a fan of "It Ain't No Fun to Me." But really, it's a highly enjoyable and short listen, and certainly a top soul recommendation to anyone.
Like more or less any other Al Green 70s album: five stars.
Lovely soul album. Although I prefer Otis Redding, who's delivery has more of a bite to it, this was still great to listen to.
Oh god it’s so good
Very tight. Vocals are stupendous. Backing band knows what's happening. 5 of 5 for tightness
One of the great soul voices. And the music is fantastic. The horns! The strings! “Let’s Stay Together” is a great song. And “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” is phenomenal — might be the best track here. I love the strings around 2:45 that imitate the wind. I’m a fan of stuff like that in music.
Beautiful voice, beautiful writing, beautiful music, beautiful album. Absolutely timeless. Enjoyed throughout, wouldn't give it anything but a 5/5.
Al green—how can you not like it
Hard to go wrong here.
ICON
Beautiful, soulful, smooth album by the king. Title track is a banger 24/7 365 baby!
amazing albums, great tones.
His soulful voice on a random Wednesday lifted my spirits. Fantastic album. Yes, Al - I want to stay together.
An enjoyable listen from start to finish. Incredible vocals and the music is stellar. Arguably some of the tracks start to feel repetitive, but it's a strong album all the way through. Would probably lean more towards 4.5 stars, but if we have to give integers, might as well go for all five :)
Oh, yes, the good Reverend Green...hecks YES! Absolutely love this album. If all it had on it was the title track, it would still be great. I've been getting more into 60s/70s soul, funk, and R&B, and that world of music is proving to be a genuine treasure trove of beautiful musical gems...like this album.
What a record!
man oh man is this a good record. every song is so emotional and well-sung, but How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is basically perfect. bee gees who??
While know and love the title track well, I had never sat down and listened to this album all the way through. The joy of hearing this all the way through for the first time has been wonderful. I love the laid back, funky, generally simple arrangements that provide a perfect backing for the Rev Green's vocal stylings. His effortless transition into falsetto sounds so easy. But it has an authentic groove that sits deep in the music. Love this record. I need to rush out and get me a copy.
I like it
First impressions of this album are really good. Uplifting. Let's stay together is a good intro to album, I knew, the intro seemed familiar.
Groovy and smooth, easy listen
Great 70's funk soul sound. Hard to beat these groovy jams. Al Green was the Man. The mix is very laid back, and Al takes the center stage. Mellow horn section sounds right in the pocket. This was my first album listen on this series.
Remember when Obama sang that song
A perfect album.
Wanting less than 3 stars is incorrect, and you should try harder on your next listen.
Soul perfection. The Reverend does have the most beautiful voice, and this album showcases it perfectly from start to finish. The backing never intrudes, supporting the main attraction, and the backing vocals lift Al’s vocal up further. There is nothing about this I don’t love - beautiful songs, arrangements, production and of course THAT voice above it all.
What an album! Al is performing in the studio, rather than just recording - quite a distinction. There are so many subtle changes in vocal style. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart is more than the perfect pop song. Pretentious warning alert: it's a work of art that can't be beaten. The Hammond organ holds it all together, along with the horn stabs. Amazing stuff.
I love it since the first song..actually, especially because of the first song
Now that's an awesome album.
Some really great soul. Some of my favourite albums on the list so far have been soul, reminds me of some of the isaac hayes
Wantlist
I think I knew all these songs despite never listening to an Al Green record before. Top stuff . Nice and short too, meaning I can deal with more of my 1001 backlog!
oh another classic soul album here, The Rev. Green doing what he did best and laying down the most seduce-able music possible, that smooth, smooth voice and the great backing band are superb. I absolutely love the Brother Gibbs "How can you mend a broken heart" with Al's timing on this as near to perfect as anything in the soul/r & b oeuvre. Of course another classic in the title track which is a standard now of course. Love Al and love this Album.
What a great album, among the best of this era. 5 🌟
tri massa o sonzao pra curtir numa boa
What a corker of an album! Al Green is a legend and this is a legendary album. An absolute joy to listen to. What a hero, so influential and really to my personal taste too. A full five stars from me, no negatives to be found here.
It's bopping, it's hopping, it's KTOWN BANGIN' Got some real classic songs on there baby
Nothing much to say other than this is a classic. Let's Stay Together is one of my favorite songs ever. I hadn't heard any of the others songs but they're all great. The trumpets throughout the album give it the classic. Old time lovin' is a particularly great song that I just heard for the first time. Al Green has one of the best voices in music history?
Unmistakable from the first few notes! Classics!
dope 10/10
Uma agradável surpresa. Só conhecia duas músicas, mas gostei de todas.
Awesom and very cool
Classic!
I can't believe I've missed out on this album until now!
Classic
Need I even say anything?
Solid. Grooves for days.
Can I unc out for a bit? He is singing his ass off on this Already Saved: Let's Stay Together Saved After Listening: La-La for You*, Old Time Lovin', How Can You Mend a Broken Heart
The master of sweet soul music, smoothness defined.
The album is timeless, full of soul, and if you have a heartbeat, it’ll get your head moving to the beat. A definite album to add to a collection.
Thats my man... and he is a Priest you know 😇
Al Green rustles my jimmies
Pretty much every time I listen to any one of Al Green's classic albums I think it's the best one but this one might actually be his all time best.
A great classic soul album
Альбом не нашла, а вот песню - да. Идеальна для поездок по ночному городу, и в целом запоминающаяся.
Soulful
Every song was a banger. Unreal
