Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Very soulful. Never knew he left the industry to beat pastor for the last 50 years. Interesting

Mellow and enjoyable.

Liked this one. Mostly some pretty easy listening, but made it really enjoyable. An album I wouldn't mind just popping on to start off the morning or to start winding down just before sunset.

A classic to be sure....

One of my favourite soul records, Al Green’s range is just a tremendous thing to hear across these 9 songs. Can’t remember when I first heard this (the spray painted neon AL GREEN on the cover has always felt out of place to me), but this album has been a staple of my summers for a long time. Just great stuff.

Interesting, blues

Wow, pleasantly surprised by this album! No skips, just some great music.

Oooh boy that's smoooooth

Excellent as expected

Al Green's Greatest Hits (the one with him shirtless on the cover) is the definitive Al Green record. The title track gleams from the Mt. Olympus of pop music for a reason, and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?" is what you hear on your soul's transmigration to Purgatory. The rest of this album is reliably groovy and expertly crafted but not that memorable.

Solid album with a perfect title track.

A classic.

Just a super solid soul album.

Soulful 3.9

The title track is a classic and it was fun hearing some of The Rev's lesser known songs. Perfect music for a rainy Thursday.

8.5 out of 10

B+ Let's Stay Together 5 La-La For You 5 So You're Leaving 3 What Is This Feeling 3 Old Time Lovin 3 I've Never Found A Girl 3 How Can You Mend A Broken Heart 5 Judy 4 It Ain't No Fun To Me 3 Great album, Al Green is a legend. He knows how to get you fluffed up.

beautiful, loved it, the brass, the singing, the songs, the signature sound.

Not many better soul music records than this and it stands up well for almost any genre. Love the range of the voice on top of such exquisite arrangement and squeaky clean playing.

What a voice! Love the title track and “how can you mend a broken heart”. Groovy love (and loss) songs.

this great!

Enjoyed this.

It’s hard to top the title track, but overall, a smooth, soulful and sexy little album.

This was great, smooth and emotive sound and a good length. Favorite songs were: Lets stay together How can you mend a broken heart 8/10

This album is great, Al Green is a king of soul. He wrote "Take Me To The River", which is my favorite song on Stop Making Sense. My favorite songs were "La-La For You" and "I've Never Found a Girl". The sound did manage to get a little old for me, even with the 34 minute run-time. "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" in particular was long for me. 7/10

Fantastic album, very fun listening experience. Great bad day cure!

4.25/5 short but good

Chill vibes. Def 10/10 soul album. Not really much to say cuz it’s just good no issues at all.

It’s a solid album but nothing stood out to me More background music than anything else, I was listening to it while installing a sink

Very good album, i love it personally, though some songs are a little too mellow

groovy and a classic. listened to half of it

Very chill, easy to listen to, soul music. Short album.

Classic soul album. Standouts are bookends: title track and "It Ain't No Fun to Me"

for me, this album does what the sinatra album was supposed to. it's a very chill vibe, smooth and relaxing, but it's also actually interesting to listen to. i had a nice time with it. 4/5

Just took an all-time with puppy to this album. What a treat. Some funny moments with the panning on this album - My edible was kicking in as the background vocals started whispering in my ear and i thought someone was trying to talk to me lol Anyways fun ass album with some incredible moments. Easy 4 and maybe a 5. 4.5?

“Banger alert” I whisper to myself as we roll the album. Let’s stay together, a perfect song. Impossible to live up to the single but good vibes and immaculate guitar playing throughout this whole project. Short as hell too, can’t beat that run time for how tight this is. This is all before the “Personal life” section of his Wikipedia (highly recommended reading) so the multiple assault charges don’t need to be discussed yet.

This is a fantastic sound album all the way through. At 34 minutes, the album is just right. 1001 album worthy: yes - 70/131

Only problem with this album is that the first track is so massive where do you go afterwards? Still a great listen if a little short!

Silky smoooooth! The band is a party and Al keeps you hooked with his crooning. Not much to complain about here.

just gotta groove y'know?

Pretty good. Not something I generally like. In that 3-4 range, but gets bumped to 4 because it’s only 30ish minutes.

I'm a big fan of Al Green's more understated approach to soul music... sometimes singing at a near whisper. Two great and well known tracks. I'd even put La-La For You up there as another great track. That said, feels like this is missing another big hitter to really push it into 5* land. Rounding down but this one is close for me... 4.25/5

Minus one star because Love and Happiness is a better album imo

Classic

nice gsi sehr nice sogar. losi weder denki. vor allem s erschte. und halt au als album sone soothing vibe.

The Reverend Al Green!!!! This is a great album, anchored by his most well-known hit, Let's Stay Together. While that classic steals the spotlight, the album also features other standout tracks like So You're Leaving and I've Never Found a Girl. However, not every song reaches the same heights, with a few tracks feeling more like filler. Personally, I’d lean toward Al Green Gets Next to You as the stronger album overall—but Let's Stay Together still holds its own as a soulful, heartfelt listen.

Lekker

Groovy! I'd like to shake my hips at Ravinia, Bryan!

Yesssssss I was waiting for this to pop up

Kort album, men ganska bra ändå.

Good soul music. I’ll probably revisit it.

Really liked. Probably 4s

Let’s stay together always reminds me of pulp fiction. Great voice , great songs. I’ll give this 4 stars. I listened to this in the balcony in Turks and Caicos. That place makes everything good I suppose.

Coooooooool soul

I really enjoyed this. My toe was tapping and most of the songs were new to me. The whole album had a coherent sound. A good example of when it’s nice to listen to a complete album rather than various artists on shuffle.

Some of the best soul out there. Let’s Stay Together an all time great

Audio velvet.

Love this album, great songs and fantastic production

What a voice! good songs! bring me the sun, pour me a wine and let me enjoy Al Green...perfect Spring day!

Al Green is the fucking man! Legend. Album is a classic.

A wonderful voice and talent. In addition to the classic, "Let's Stay Together," this album also includes a pretty great cover of the Bee Gees "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart"!

nem szeretem annyira a soult, de el kell ismerni hogy ez meg van csinálva

Great vocals and groovy production

Let's Stay Together 4 La-La for You 4 So You're Leaving 3.8 What Is This Feeling 3.4 Old Time Lovin' 3.6 I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do) 3.5 How Can You Mend a Broken Heart 3.6 Judy 3.5 It Ain't No Fun to Me 3.4 Score: 3.644444444

Very good, some real classics

I never listened to a soul album before and I'm surprised by how nice and groovy this is. Great general atmosphere and prologue to this amusing genre.

I meannnn It was amazing. I can’t give it 5 stars but yes it was amazing

Listened to this a few times and liked it. Pretty chill and would listen again. 4/5

Encore un super album soul? Pincez-moi je rêve, arrêtez de tout les mettre back à back, je vais être pogné avec du post punk et du britpop jusqu’à la fin

Er singt top! Wenn er noch etwas entspannter wäre, gäbs auch 5.

I can tell that I enjoyed this album. It went by so quick. For once I was listening to something that wasn't dragging on for too long.

i listened to this in the shower and it was pretty good for that so 4

Oozes class

high highs, but also more filler than a 30 minute album should have.

Okay, an album from Al Green makes sense on a list like this, where you're trying to include as many cornerstones of popular music as possible. Given the man's legendary status as a soul singer, you'd feel obligated to include at least one work from him. To the list's credit, Let's Stay Together is a solid outing where the songs are well-played by the backing band as Al effortlessly embellishes and reaches those falsetto notes almost effortlessly. A few tracks like the title track, "So You're Leaving" and "I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do)" are certifiable bangers out of the gate with the horn accompaniments. That said, I can't say I'm overly wowed by this album. It's a decent at times great listen, but some songs are purposefully slowed down to illicit a more romantic feeling where the energy is dialed back such as on "What is This Feeling" and the cover of the Bee Gees' "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart", hampering the overall pace. I was admittedly looking at what other soul albums were put out in 1972. When you got the likes of Bill Withers's Still Bill, Stevie Wonder's Talking Book and Curtis Mayfield's Superfly soundtrack, that's some stiff competition that I can't say this album holds a candle to in overall quality. Not to mention, Al himself would put out another album that year with I'm Still in Love With You, and maybe that's the album that could've been included on this list. Perhaps this album will grow on me over time, and it's hard to get that sense within a day's listening. I will give the list the benefit of the doubt here; Let's Stay Together is a solid and respectable choice to include from one of soul's greatest artists. Even if my bar has been set rather high for the genre, this album was still a delight.

groovy soul, very nice

Man's came a long way since "Daddy Would You Like Some Sausage". Good for him.

Love rev al

Ein gute-Laune Album obwohl so viele Lieder über den Herzschmerz sind :-D. Entspannter Groove und gute Unterhaltung. Der Typ hat auch eine super Stimme. Lieblingslied: „Old Time Lovin'“. Solide 4,5/5

Classic. Great voice, great band, great vibes.

I mean. Good stuff. If it was on I wouldn't change it. It's probably a 3.5 in my book - not quite a 4, but 3 feels too low.

2 all time classics in the title track and How do you mend… The rest is pretty good too

Very smooth

Good album even if most of the album tracks sound similar. It's a good sound to sound like though. It's a 3.5 but I'll round up

Ein perfekteres Album hätte man mir für einen Samstagmorgen nicht geben können, hat super gepasst :) How can you mend a broken heart hat mir am besten gefallen

sometimes you just gotta chill and this a great album for that

Cool album, cool ambiance

Solid album. Initial impression was that it was like many others, but the horn section won me over.

I saw Al once and he came out in a white suit and handed out roses to all the old white ladies. What a stud.

The title track is GOAT-level. The rest of the album can’t live up to that, because honestly what can? But it was a solid piece of music that I enjoyed.

Great album overall. I love how the title track and first track is also the album name, makes it easy to keep straight. The organ is the unsung star of the show, along with the guitar and... Okay, the whole arrangement is wonderful here. Al has so much underlying strength in his vocal he smoothly lays it down. I love Al Green, what a great first review for me. It's also really cool when a "Whal Greens" has the light on it's WH go out; makes it seem like free advertising.

Jammer. Nice easy grooves, layers of sound come through with plenty of headroom. Let it rip.

A stunning conclusion to this week. All albums since Monday are from the 70s or earlier. Albums named after the first and most popular song on it tend to suck. But "Let's Stay Together" is a great treat. Here's to a great week of music. 4 stars for "Let's Stay Together".

Style!

Really good - knew more than i thought.

Para escuchar cuando tienes un buen dia, sonido de los coros increibles

Actually pretty good, liked it better than the last two!

Great album, love this sort of music

this had a really nice groove to it and I had heard the first track for sure. I've always been meaning to listen to Al Green so I'm glad this came up today. 4 stars for sure

The OG panty-dropper artist. This is damn sexy soul music. 4 stars.

Great voice and smooth instrumentals. Some big hits too

I really enjoyed this album. When it came up I wasn't really in the mood but forced myself to listen anyway. No regrets.

Can’t go too far wrong with a nice bit of soul. And this was a nice album full of nice soulful songs.

List wins again, now I like a soul album, I did not see that coming! First 3 songs are really cool, then calms a bit and finishes on a great one. This guy has a fantastic voice and the arrangement is nice and upbeat (against the subject matter a bit) without feeling cliched and cheesy. Given the amount of long albums we’ve had of late, this is a top example of keeping it short and sweet. Makes you want to listen again, rather than feeling relieved the battle is over and needing a lie down. To repeat the very old adage, always leave them wanting more kids!

M'encanta! Una música súper chill i fàcil d'escoltar

Excellent

Immediately recognizable vocals of the legendary Al Green in a soul/pop crossover album. Best listened on a speaker vs in-ear backing vocals can be mixed a bit heavy and the occasionally hard panned brass can be distracting. Let’s Stay Together is a great pop start, then a handful of solid soul tracks, The cover of How Can You Mend a Broken Heart by the BeeGees is genius - so heartfelt where the original was a bit cheesy.

I Can’t listen to this album and not think about Pulp Fiction. Love his voice and the overall feel of this album. It is honestly not an album I would normally listen but now I feel like it needs to be.

Nice chill vibes, appreciated.

Dat voice doe

Thanks to the reviews on this site for accompanying one of my favourite soul singers with a totally depressing Wikipedia read.

Nice treat

Good vibe

Classic

One banger away from being a 5 star. The title track is one of the greatest songs of all time. Everything is good, some of it is great. Really like it 4

Lovely album. Doesn't quite stay as strong as the title track but an easy listen throughout

Excellent all the way through. Great Sunday album

Great soul, very listenable and smooth. Al Green has such a distinctive voice that really connects well with the song and the listener. Songs can get a bit repetitive, but overall a great listen.

There is a scene in a Simpsons episode where a Christian music artist is describing switching from Christian music to pop and she says that basically all you have to do is switch “Jesus” for “baby” in the lyrics and you’re most of the way there. I can’t fault Al Green as a performer because he’s great, and he’s certainly not the first or the last to take gospel music and change “Jesus” to “baby” (or “religion” to “lovin”) but man is it blatant. Still, amazing singing, infectious grooves, an incredible album.

Al Green's vocals are so smooth. Album only had 9 songs and it felt way too short, which is the only negative thing I can say about it.

Nice sound First two songs are great Overall very strong - will definitely come back to it

A masterful soul record.

8/10. Great all the way through. Of course, the title song classic brings it up a notch as well.

Excellent songs, killer voice, sounds like it was recorded live. I think I've been coddled by modern music production to consider that a detriment, but here we are. Really great stuff. Where can I find that jacket?

Enjoyed the album, especially the popular songs. The non popular songs were fine. I would definitely listen again. 7/10.

I always love me some Al Green. Such a great voice, and the tracks on this album are all great.

This is really cool because you can hear really clearly the gospel influences that preceded this genre as well as the bones of future R&B. I’m not sure it was super compelling to listen to as a full album, but all these songs on their own were really great!!

Well what can you say. A classic. I regret going on Wikipedia. I had for some reason decided he had died young, he had not. Instead he became an abusive sod to various women despite turning to religion. I guess Christianity ain't all that. Anyway once again. When the music is this good, it simply can't be ruined by the actions of the author. Nothing comes close to the opener, yet is still great. I have to leave myself somewhere to go though, when there's records like Bill Withers' where every song is up to that quality.

A classic. Soulful. Listened on a rainy drive and the vibes were perfect. Highlights: Let’s Stay Together (obviously), How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, It Ain’t No Fun to Me

Great soul album, loved the instrumentation

Very enjoyable. Great voice, great music, nearly a 5.

Good RnB/soul music is where the vent diagram of honest lyricism/singing crosses with bits of the pop format. I really respect Al Greens ability to do that with such ease on this record. Just little treats of authenticity coming at you left and right every single song. Like someone handing you assorted homemade baked goods for an hour straight

Great album. Has a slightly earlier feel that 1972. More late 60s... even so, thoroughly enjoyable. A solid 4/5.

Very nice

Super chill soulful album.

The inspiration for the song Let’s Stay Together was more political than romantic. Many people would say Al Green is lovemaking music, but I used it for work focus and it was great. Soul minimalism at its most efficient.

Al Green, you exceeded my expectations on this one. Not something I would sit down and rock out too, but great background, listening, and well done.

Respect the Reverand, he doesnt quite make my soul Mt Rushmore, though.

This album could be nominated solely based on the titular first track. And I'd be okay with that. The rest of the album was solid, if not extraordinary.

Really nice album, I was also in a good mood

Du très bon funk et R&B, de grand standard, très constant. Rien n’accote la première chanson « Let’s Stay Together », mais quand même de très bonne ma chansons, dont « OldTime Lovin’ » et « I’ve Never Found A Girl ». Les back-vocals et les cuivres sont géniaux. Et quelle voix, qui peut faire n’importe quoi et qu’on veut continuer à entendre, toujours plus.

So good!!!

Очень прикольная фанкота. Единственное – разнообразием текста не блещут.

I was thinking I was going to get bored with this. I had the base knowledge of Al Green as a swooner, that music for setting the mood trope type deal, and was not really that excited by the pick. BUT... Al Green IS legit smooth and it is super easy to get sucked in to the vibe. The album ended and the youtube algorithm picked another one and it took me a couple songs to realize what happened. I was that "OK" with listening. A question came up in the comments section: "what ever happened to this kind of soul?" I don't know. But at least we have Al Green to turn to when we need to step away from whatever is going on today!

Grymt bra musicerande. Låtmässigt bra album också.

Great classic soul. What a wonderful singer. Favorites: Let's Stay Together

7/10. Yes, sure! I don't mind staying together, Al. :) In all seriousness, this is a really pleasant soul album. While there are other soul albums among the 1,001 albums that I enjoy more than this one, this is still a really nice album!!! Its title track is great!!! :)

short and sweet and lovely

As traditional soul transitioned to modern soul, Al Green sat at the helm as the fulcrum. In its best moments, then, Let’s Stay Together is immaculately produced and performed, and while the songs are a bit thick, they’re still undeniably infectious and crisp, which holds true to this day. And I’d say the majority of this album is as strong as you’d anticipate. But there are weak spots, and those weak spots are the more traditional, and start to break the facade of classic to reveal datedness beneath the cracks. Even as a girl who *really* enjoys ‘70s soul, there’s some real bland cuts here that sound “similar” or even, dare I say, cliché. It’s only about 1/3rd of the album, but proportionally, that’s a notable minority. I do think the more diverse, expansive sound palettes of Side B benefit the album’s legacy beyond its title track’s greatness, but while it’s far from the flawless masterpiece some may claim, it’s still very, very, very good. Let’s Stay Together is still a soul classic, and if you like soul music, you’ll like most of this, even if you think it’s a bit old-school. I’d have just stuck to the Greatest Hits, as evidenced by the fact that the singles are the best parts here, but this is obviously still a great record in its own right.

When an album starts with one of the greatest songs of all time, the rest is bound to feel like a let down. Which is true of this album, but after listening to it several times, the rest is also very good.

Oh boy, sample city. I have listened to a lot of hip-hop records and my favorites are always the sample heavy songs. This record fits right into the category that always gets sampled, that being 70's soul. Its just a nice album to put on and let play, not much stands out but the vibe its sets is good. Al Green's voice also is awesome and the band does great work.

cover of the bee gees song sounds fun liked most of it

I've Never Found A Girl i It Ain't No Fun To Me su mi također favoriti s albuma, vjerojatno jer su malo razigranije u odnosu na meki gospel/soul izricaj koji se provlaci kroz vecinu pjesama.

Somehow, the first time ever listening to an entire album of his

You can feel this album

The soulful grooves of Al Green. Good stuff! Stay Together and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart (Bee Gees Cover) are my favorites. The Bee Gees version is great but Al adds more soul to it.

This was really great. I love his voice and vibe.

cool, smooth

His jacket is very stylish Thoroughly nice, between 3.5 and 4

++: La-La for You, What Is This Feeling, Old Time Lovin', I've Never Found a Girl (Who Loves Me Like You Do), It Ain't No Fun to Me +: Let's Stay Together, So You're Leaving, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, Judy 8,5/10

His silky vocals and heartfelt delivery make every song feel passionately special. It is pure soul perfection it flows with warmth and emotion.

enjoyable

Classic album. Just such a nice groovy background music. The bass and rhythm work is great, and Al's voice is pure honey.

Has more colors and emotions than just green.

Almost a five but there were a couple songs, like "what is this feeling", that I just couldn't feel. His voice and the melodies are fantastic! Specifically, "Old time lovin'" to "how can you mend a broken heart" goes crazy.

This was a great album. I had only listened to Al Green's hits and as a full album, this really came together for me. I would 1000% grab this on vinyl and add it into heavy rotation.

Pre-listening thoughts: cover of Bee Gees song probably won’t be as good as Bee Gees sorry Al green but I like soul so maybe this will be a good record Post/during listening thoughts: like the other reviews say, sometimes 35 mins of feel good soul is just right for the day. This album feels like sitting in the right patch of sun. But it’s also a great album to listen to to put laundry away (what? I put away my laundry? Crazy times people) 8/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah Fav tracks: Let’s Stay Together, So You’re Leaving, I’ve Never Found a Girl, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart (not as good as Bee Gees but still good!), It Ain’t No Fun To Me Least fav tracks: none

but only for half an hour or so

Muy guay :) 4 estrellas

First few microseconds it hit me 'oh, it's Pulp Fiction' and then oh, 'Pulp Fiction is Al Green.' The whole brief record was joy. Thoroughly appropriate if it inspires other minds to get medieval on some artistic endeavors.

feeling it. Loved. Very colorful with a vintage filter. His voice is beautiful. The lyrics are not bad. 4.5. I would listen it again

Home of the groove

Right off the bat with the iconic opening track, you’ll be jamming and grooving along to some sweet 70’s soul from Mr Green himself.

el soul es hipnotico

Gotta agree that the title track is so good, the rest doesn't hit as hard as it could. Big up the Reverend.

Great! 4/5

Great stuff, would def listen again.

8/10 Mostly about love Great nonetheless

Just lovely. Classic soul

Great but shouldn't have put let's stay together first because nothing else compares to it

I really liked this. I had tried to listen to this before and wasn't feeling it. Today it was just right. I'll definitely come back to this album.

Short and sweet. A beautiful and well-produced album.

Very chill music I liked it. Charity shop music

I took a rare day off work in late October just for myself, went from a long run, came back tired as a dog and collapsed on my couch. I opened this app and this album popped up. It's hard to really describe if you weren't here with me, but it fit this moment in time so well.

Pretty good album. It was a nice soulful album full of good music to listen to. Favorite song: So you’re leaving

Let’s Stay Together (the song) almost carries this album by itself. Most of the rest of the track list is fine, not quite filler but never reaching the same heights. Fave Tracks: Let’s Stay Together, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart 3.8/5

Loved it. I was surprised by the difference in sound between these early recordings and the slicker ones you hear today.

Smooth! I obviously knew the title track but this is a solid album

Classic soul! Favorite track: Let’s stay together other picks: so you’re leaving, i’ve never found a girl, how can you mend your heart.

4 out of 5. Very enjoyable! Plus the jacket Al Green wears on the album art looks cool too.

Beautiful soul album, So Green has one of the best voices in soul and this album is probably his best known as the title track is a soul classic but for me his cover of he Bee Gees How Can You Mend A Broken Heart is stunning.

Smooth...

Didn't manage to get all the way to the end, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. Al Green’s voice is like silk and there’s some great songs on here. Will definitely be revisiting

On a different day, this may not have done as much for me. But today, on a lazy and cozy Saturday morning with the fall weather turning crisp outside, this was hitting just right. Just right, indeed. 4/5 Highlights: Let’s Stay Together So You’re Leaving Old Time Lovin’ I’ve Never Found a Girl How Can YouI Mend a Broken Heart

A classic.

Love it!

Stunning voice, heartfelt songs. Really can't fault it.

Al Green is the definition of easy listening and this album is an example of that. 4 stars or B- for me.

Great album to wake up to in the morning if you can take things slowly. Maybe drags a touch in the middle.

Vocals are flawless. I feel like this music sounds like a movie soundtrack, with a big personality but with a strongly familiar vibe i liked it a lot

Not my kind of music but surprisingly enjoyable. Not enjoyable enough to at Al Green to favorites but I did enjoy listening to this album.

Ein perfekteres Album hätte man mir für einen Samstagmorgen nicht geben können, hat super gepasst :) How can you mend a broken heart hat mir am besten gefallen

incredibly consistent in sound and feel, but a lot of the time on the A-side, i feel as if the deeper cuts have a hard time distinguishing themselves from the other. by virtue of having "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" on side B, Let's Stay Together sort of prevents this trend from continuing throughout, but it can still be hard to pick each track apart. it's a bit suiting that an album that's generally associated with having sex with someone feels like it was recorded in a hot, kind of sticky room.

1st song - I like the chord progressions, and the background vocals, the drum beat is smooth and simple, singing is very nice, strings in the right ear, starting the album strong with this one 2nd song - I love this piano and the chords, drum beat is nice and consistent, I like the horns in the right ear, nice drum fill in the middle of the song, nice fade out 3rd song - I like the intro how the bass would do something, then the horn after, I like the drum variations in this one 4th song - I like the chord changes, and the drum rhythms 5th song - I like the bass, and the drum beat and rhythm, I like the call and response, and the harmonies, I love that guitar 6th song - that bass is sexy, especially the way it bends at the beginning, super snappy snare, this or no1 is my favourite, feels a bit long though 7th song - 6/8 time signature, thick bass, and strings, I love the singing style, its so smooth and relaxing, I liked the part where the strings were in a tremolo, ride cymbal just came in halfway through I like that, 6 min song and it carried it 8th song - strings in left ear, I think there's toms or bongos in the right ear and I like that, I liked that ascending guitar in the middle, this has a nice groove, I think it's my favourite song on here 9th song - strong bass and low end, I like the drum sounds especially the snare Favourites: Judy, Let's Stay Together

So buttery smooth I felt my cholesterol rising.

Pulp Fiction oh yeahhhhhhh

This is a very pleasant Sunday listen.

Super groovy warm seventies love music.

I'm not wearing any panties, but if I was they'd be on the floor.

I really enjoyed this short classic. Mend A Broken Heart was my favorite

What a nice listen. Such a great voice and fun funk/soul grooves. Feels like I'll like it more and more as I listen to it more. Nothing revolutionary but a really nice piece of music.

This album opens strong and closes strong for me. Few ups and downs in between but a wonderful album

86% Best: Let’s Stay Together; So You're Leaving; I've Never Found a Girl; How Can You Mend a Broken Heart; It Ain't No Fun to Me Must-Hear? Sure

Soul goodness

i enjoyed it, thanks

Also love al, something so melancholy about his music. also has a dope voice

Gillar mycket, hade lätt kunnat chilla till detta albumet.

Great album. It is short and sweet, hits all the right notes and then leaves before you get tired.

Maybe not baby making but Netflix and chill at least

Few albums bottle pure soul like this one from ultimate wife guy Al Green. The vibe is almost unbearably smooth, like red velvet pants. The Muscle Shoals-inspired production is so warm and intimate, you can practically hear the band breathing, with horns and drums sitting side by side in the mix. But it’s Green’s falsetto—so natural it feels effortless—that pulls you deeper with every note. As the night wears on, though, you wonder: is he seducing me or singing me to sleep?

Short and sweet album. I liked this more than I thought I would. The music stayed interesting and upbeat throughout the entire listen.

Really great album, so so smooth

Groovy feel-good music. I don’t listen to enough Al Green

Great album, feels like a warm fall afternoon with all the windows open and you’re baking a pie and dancing in the kitchen. Excellent vibes

Smooth and warm. Traces of pain give some depth to plenty of joy. Drags a little, but overall a full slate of classic soul. Best song: Let's Stay Together

A classic soul album from a legend!

Wonderful

It's not full on like my favourite stuff but it's like 80% of the way there: I just love the way guitar/bass/drums sound on a bunch of soul records. It's so cool. There's so much space. All three accent different parts in a bar just differently enough that it sounds like the band knows some wild secret about the universe. It's so cool. this Al Green fella's a pretty good singer too I spose music: appreciated. (⌐■_■)

The easy standouts were the two songs I was familiar with, Let's Stay Together and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. Will happily listen to this again.

Smooth

Pretty good

I first heard Let's Stay Together in 1994 when I was given the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. I loved the song then and I love it just as much now. It's got such a great groove and I had never heard an entire Al Green album prior to today. It's simultaneously exactly what I expected and also a nice surprise because it's not too laid back but still a pretty chill album. How Can You Mend a Broken Heart may be a bit long but it's a nice cover of the Bee Gees tune. So You're Leaving, It Ain't No Fun to Me and What is This Feeling are also great tracks. I love the horns, love the production and think this is a definite must-listen album.

Didn't listen to this properly because I was just having my breakfast while it played, and I wish I could have given it more justice. Enjoyed it though

strangely relaxing to work to at night (catching up after missing this morning - took Holly for a nursery visit). Strings, brass and walking bass lines. It's soothing but has a bit of a kick to keep me working! Memphis delivers again.

I enjoyed this album. If it had not followed Ray Charles’ album, then would have been a 5.

His style was very smooth and legato-ish. Remained consistent almost the entire time

Solid 4. At first I was kinda in between a 3 and a 4 because every song was about a woman and love gone wrong but then I realised that it was still a very nice album to listen to. His voice sounded good, musically it was on point, each song was unique. Overall nice album and one I wouldn’t mind someone putting on.

So smooth, so sexy - hadn’t listened to this in forever. Holds up well. Great 70s soul.

Very strong record.

very jazzy and groovy, could totally be played in an underground jazz bar

Easy listening, relaxing, wholesome

I enjoyed this one. Not necessarily my style of music, but still a solid listen.

This just makes me happy to listen to. I'm not as familiar with Soul or Al Green to make well-thought comments or critiques, but I'm vibing and having a great time listening. The title track is definitely the cream of the crop here, but every song has something going for it and is a good listen. Favorite Song(s): Let's Stay Together, Old Time Lovin, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart

Great to make dinner with your honey to

groovin' and lovely early 70's soul. perfect for relaxing with your significant other i would say, it's another one of those chill soul albums that radiates in positivity and... well... love. nothing else matters, just give your girl a hug and a kiss and a cuddle. i was pleasantly surprised with this man's expansive career, writing all sorts of tracks well into the 21st century and never breaking his classic romantic aesthetic.

Gonna tell my kids this was the birth o of Al

Brilliant album from 1972 - Old time loving is fantastic

Al Green é incrível demais. Let's Stay Together é um marco.

Great soul album!

Pure SOUL. The "Black" Elvis Presley. Saw him in concert in Denver, Co. in the 1970's.

Lovely, soulful jams. A good listen.

The iconic, unmistakable and always smooth Al Green. Pure emotion throughout every song. The rhythm, the voice, the cadence, always a joy listening to this man jam. His band is such a perfect complement to his vocals, creating such beautiful harmony. Love this record.

What a voice. Holy crap.

I'm not sure I've actually heard all that much by Al Green, but this album is solid from start to finish, and definitely full of soul. The title track is a great song, sung really well, and the cover of "How can you mend a broken heart" is definitely up there with the likes of Gary Jules' version of "Mad world" as a cover that transcends an unmemorable (and maudlin) original. It's also interesting that Al Green's career seems a bit like Cat Stevens, although I'm glad they both eventually came back to (secular) music.

Proof that sometimes an impeccable vocal is all you need to create a great record.

So much emotion, so much soul. Just enjoy and let Al Green take over for just about half an hour.

Soul is exactly what I wanted to listen to today it seems, great album!

Soul. Un megahit. Un 4.

Wasn’t ready to like this nearly as much as I did, so a pleasant surprise

highly enjoyable

Very enjoyable quick album

3 or 4. Good enough to listen again. Inspiration of every Daptone record ever made. How can you mend a broken heart version is great

Smooth and comforting soul.

i know al green because he was referenced in that one kanye song track 1: good but i'll probably not return to it much if i i'm being honest. for some reason this tracks album art on spotify has slightly different color grading than the rest of the tracks on this album and it really confusing me. track 2: i felt this one idk how to explain it but i felt it track 7: this smooth as fuck goddamn. not that other tracks are bad, but i wish they were all smooth and subdue like this one. however i feel like that would get old if im being honest. i like how this one stands out a bit in this tracklist track 8: surprised to find only one song that sampled this on whosampled.com, that intro so sample worthy I don't listen to a lot of soul, so I don't have much frame of reference on whether or not this is "good" soul, however sound-wise this is great. Al's vocals are wonderful, production feels a little dated, but that's expected from an album from the 70s. But those smoother tracks like How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and Judy are timeless (and my favorites on the album).

Damn, this was hip. Slinky stuff, cool voice, the quality doesn't dip. A most enjoyable listen. I know what they were attempting on the cover art, but this looks like an Al Green edition of Goosebumps.

A lot of fun, some good songs, just an overall nice experience. The funk/soul albums on this list do not disappoint.

So gooey

One of the greatest soul albums of all time.

This is good I loved the first song super romantic

Fantastic voice and awesome styling. I, for one, will listen to Al Green sing anything, whether it be a shopping list, a dictionary entry, or everything you need to know about love.

Sehr gut, leider ist die Qualität des Mikrofons nicht mehr auf der Zeit

Good soul with Greens meaty vocals stand out on the more uptempo songs

A great record. Going right up against the Teddy Pendergrass style of getting bigger and bigger, Al Green keeps it more intimate.

Silky smooth

4☆/5 07.19.2024

3.5 stars rounded up.

There's a razor thin line between perfection and disaster, and Al Green is perfection. He has a voice that no one can duplicate. He soulfully sings a whisper with a voice that's so close to sounding like a distraction or like it would be strange to talk with, but it's a beautiful instrument. It also makes me glad you never hear anyone perform his music at karaoke. Thr music itself is great, and this album is just excellent r&b/soul.

a total vibe as far as classic motown sound - it's a total bop throughout, and the way in which Al's earnest and beautiful voice floats over top is unbelievable.

Never heard of Al Green and it's not usually my kind of music, but this was very chilled, a good vibe. The first track was particularly good. Would listen to again.

Really good album. Al Greens voices really calming, will definitely listened to album again

What a voice. Starts with a banger then a bunch if love songs. 7/10

Silky Smooth. Understated and lovely.

Lets stay together. What a tune. Absolute banger. Classic song. Great start to the album. Al's voice is on top form in this track. Some really good use of brass, strings and organs in the album. Top tracks: Lets stay together So you're leaving me How can you mend a broken heart The duration of the album is very good. Not too long, not too short.

So so good. Groove is immaculate. LOVED this.

Al Green has a great voice for his line of work. It is oddly aged for how old he is (twenty-five on this album) but still has a pep in its step that keeps the grooves and funk moving, while feeling completely and utterly earnest. These may be love-making tunes, but it never really slows down, save for the Bee Gee's cover at the climax of the album, and so with its brisk speed and short length, you can let this album absorb you in a simple lunch break. Sure, it may be a tad derivative of other soul acts, and in retrospect the influence Al Green had ensured many other singers would try to sound like this for decades to come, leading to an influx of very similar sounding tunes, but Green pulls it off the best if you just want something to get you through the day. I love the fuzz of the album, too, as it makes the whole thing just feel warm. A nice juxtaposition to the cool (in both temperature and style) looking Green on the cover. Not my favorite soul record, but certainly wins me over more than most, with just the right amount of jamming and love to win me other and get me, at the very least, tapping my foot.
