Reviews (page 5 of 14)
I have a vinyl copy of this masterpiece, so cracked a beer and put it on. It's not one that I can just have on in the background, it demands your attention. I'm by no means a jazz connoisseur, but I think I've listened to a decent portion of the all time greats. This is by far one of the finest I've listened to. It's quite experimental and has some passages that border on "free jazz", so it's not one I'd recommend for someone new to the genre. I don't have the knowledge to fully understand the music theory, but to my ear there's nothing missing here and no fat to be trimmed at all. Other than that, I'm not sure what else I can say that hasn't already been said. 10/10.
My first and still my favorite Coltrane album. Nobody will ever cover A Love Supreme, nor should they; it stands into the future as a testament to the greatest jazz can offer.
This is one of my favorite compositions. It is inspiring to hear Trane bear his soul through his playing.
Fuck, finally. I've been waiting for far too long for a John Coltrane album on this list, and this is my favorite John Coltrane album (at among his albums as a band leader). It's a masterpiece from beginning to end; the product of a truly beautiful soul. Coltrane's virtuosity is on display often on the album, but he's also restrained in service of making a more cohesive piece of music Frankly, I don't know what else to say about this album. It gives me goosebumps when I hear it. Go experience it for yourself 5/5
Phenomenal start to finish what a man 10/10
Didn’t get to listen.
Mix is interesting, all harmony in the middle, melody on the left, percussion on the right. 1965 so that stuff probably wasn't totally figured out yet. Insane musicianship though. Fucking crazy how they all play off of each other, somehow out of time and in time all at once. Oh shit there's vocals now, a creepy chant, "A love supreme". Really incredible album. I love this.
Amazing. True classic. Feeling that Sims 1 construction mode vibez.
Mmmm yes Jazz
Even I've heard of this one. Quite hypnotic and atmospheric. I like the sax above other jazz instruments and this doesn't disappoint. Don't find it too overwhelming either. Great record.
The best way to start any morning.
I mean, c’mon, what can I say here? Superb album that incredibly complex yet entirely accessible. Saxophone is god
Nice for a summers evening walk
Awesome album. So many instruments used beautifully throughout the tracklist. If I had to pick one instrument that stuck out the most, I would go with the piano. Whoever played the piano gave a 10/10 performance. I would recommend this album to anyone.
grande presença, sonzao nask
One of the few albums where I can still remember the first time I listened to it. Incredible how Coltrane translates the incredible skills of the entire group of musicians into something spiritual and almost otherworldly.
Jazz... Coltrane. What is there to say negative about this? It's refreshing. Great music on a cold winter night by the fire. Great background music when entertaining guests. Great sitting on the deck in the fall watching the sun set.
10/10 album I could get into every little thing I love about this album but none of it would even compare to the 33 minutes it would take you to actually just listen to it
Kenties yksi suosikki-jazzlevyistäni
Its enchanting, mesmerizing and yet cognitively exhausting to listen to, somewhat akin to the sirens' call from The Odyssey. I can't even begin to comprehend the complexity of the performance and the skill required to pull it off with this much elegance and emotion, let alone the genius and intimate musical intuition required to absolutely nail it in a single take. I will need to come back to this album many more times before I can fully appreciate it, and I'll be glad to do it.
It's weird how jazz albums with 2 songs on an album side are considered "classic" yet rock albums with just 2 songs are "excessive" or "pretentious". I don't listen to enough jazz, but what I do listen to I like or love. And this album I love. I wish I listened to it more.
Un incontournable de Coltrane.
Acknowledgement. Resolution. Pursuance. Psalm. Pt. I Yeah. I f'd up, but it felt good! Pt. II Yes. I will pay my debt. Pt. III Ok. But I want to feel good again / mental struggles. Pt. IV This was a hard lesson, I'm regretful and I'm tired of the fight. Psalm is so, so, so sad.
This is a masterpiece. I wish I understood it more. I do love it.
LP
Epic. Iconic. Brilliant. Crucial.
Definitely a must-own record for any collection and a seminal record in the jazz genre.
Buenos motivos musicales. Hay un álbum homónimo pero en vivo, me llama la atención
Wonderful. Solos from piano, trumpet, saxophone, drums. It was like you sat down at a bar and just listened to a whole set.
Must Hear if there ever was a Must Hear. Really Futuristic... (9/10) FT: A Love Supreme, Pt. I – Acknowledgement
Perfection
One of the most amazing pieces of recorded music in history. The album is transcending, no more needs to be said.
As near perfection you can get with a jazz album. I'm probably in the minority by thinking that Giant Steps is superior, but Love Supreme is a stellar work. 4.5/5.
I had listened to this album some time ago, and I appreciate it more now than I did then.
Sempre é uma experiência transcendental revisitar este álbum
Produtividade monstra na manhã escutando o sopro

o ome gravou numa paulada essa obra-prima 💯
Brilliant. Genius. Been listening to this album for decades and will continue to revisit it for years to come.
Even without really understanding all the reasons, it's easy to recognize a masterpiece when I see one.
I love jazz
A classic
1965 - Modal jazz; avant-garde jazz; free jazz
I've never been a jazz expert but I can still enjoy how great this album is. Explaining how great this is may be another question.
Absolute masterpiece. Fav tracks: - All of them
Lovely all the way through
Outstanding.
As someone who likes to play the saxophone, Coltrane is a bit of an idol. While not as melodious as other Jazz greats, Coltrane more than makes up for it in creativity. A masterpiece that I wish were longer.
A love supreme
One of my all times, right here.
Classic classic classic--doesn't make it any easier to absorb. Even now that first track, I still don't really know whether the drums, the piano, and John were in the same room. It somehow still all comes together, the magic of jazz and Coltrane and that band. Not as "listenable" as Kind of Blue, so I don't love it as much as that album, definitely still five stars.
Great! Masterpiece…
JA
Great Jazz Album
Don't listen to too much jazz, but this album is just, great. yes.
Yeah, I don't know what to say. It's damn near perfect. One of those records that any perceived deficiency is probably due to my lack of context/knowledge.
Beautiful. Perfect. A class in what good jazz is all about.
supreme
Classic jazz album filled to the brim with beautiful, soul-searching rhythms. Experimental but not too experimental to wall off mainstream appeal. Do yourself a favor and listen to this all-time great.
Great jazz album, not to big a fan of jazz but this one was great
Incredible jazz album but not as good as ascension.
Great album. Couldn't ask for better jazz.
Jazz by a master
Legendary
The quintessential jazz album.
Jazz masterpiece.
Fantastic stuff. Can get a bit too manic at times so I can see why people might not like it. However, the manic never gets overwhelming and I'm not really sure how. A testament to his genius I suppose.
Masterpiece
Dit is ultiem goated!!! Wat een artist wat een muziek. Hebbek nodig om vinyl voor die ultieme setting.
I don't care what happened this week. Eryka started us off strong and John is finishing us stronger. How can you ask for anything more than the perfect four track 30 minute jazz session we get today? John looks mad in this album cover but it seemed like he was having a great time. Loved this.
Loved it
This absolutely slaps
Great. Needs a lot more listening.
What a talented 30 minutes. Great solos on all instruments, as good as jazz gets imo
Sublime
this is another one i've been looking forward to coming up in the rotation. i know My Favorite Things very well, but this one hardly at all - until now! because, helpfully, the entire thing is here twice, and some of it 3x. so that's cool - i appreciate the efficiency story there. the complexity of this whole album is just mind-blowing. simple beats building to ridiculous rhythms, and coltrane's sax just climbing the walls...except when he hauls back hard on that line and manages to restrain it - but you know that thing just wants to wail for all it's worth, and when it does, there's nothing like it.
A work of genius. Quite simply, if you don't like it you're wrong.
5/5 probablement un des meilleurs dans son genre avec kind of blue. À écouter et réécouter et réécouter. Un classique
I wanna play guitar like Coltrane plays sax
50. Somos fumo e um fogo ligeiro. Definidos por pressa de acabar o que ficou para trás. Despacha lá isto, pá. Antes feito que perfeito. MotA: Pt. III - Pursuance
Done.
A beautiful jazz album. Relaxing and pleasant. Maybe the best jazz album I've listened to.
An all-time jazz classic by saxophonist John Coltrane.
I'm not sure if I'm able to give an informed comment on a classic jazz album. A reminder that I need to listen to more jazz. But this is a standard. 5 STARS!
a standard for jazz, definitely genre defining and must listen.
5/5

The greatest modern jazz record ?
Clásico del jazz, no aburre nunca. Voltaje revienta el saxo. El batería es quizás lo mejor. Genial
This one is just so good
One of my favourite jazz albums!
Legend! Loved it
Love me some Jazz and this is up there with the best for me
A dark, blurry, improvisational groove. There is something primal and transcendent going on here
Instrumental, Jazz.
such a cool album. 10/10

disco regalado a mama. muy buen saxofonista
Coltrane's sax texture is all over the map in the best possible way. THE BASS SOLO ON PART THREE!
Hola
I love everything about this album except for the part where they chant a Love supreme. the improvisations and overall Vibe are just so much fun, and it's interesting to think about where this one lives in history as Coltrane and Davis's relationship progressed
Already listend
A classic album by one of the greats, I’ve never taken the time to really dig into Coltrane’s work but his talent and accomplishments are undeniable.
So good!
10
it's a five NEXT
It's a classic for a reason. Experimental and beautiful.
Classic jazz album, huge fan
I need to dive deeper into Coltrane. This spoke to me and I want to know more of how and why. Ah, jazz.
Cool stuff
Jazzy, lovely, timeless, nothing to not like here
if you at all know jazz this album should be in your radar
Recording in 1 session is wild
There’s a lot to like in this album. I love a nice chaotic jazz experience. The only let down is the last track, really. It’s kind of samey throughout without a lot of variety or anything particularly interesting. The first three songs are dynamic and varied. With some amazing talent on display. The drummer especially. Really enjoyed it. The album went down smooth.
Fast, resonant, and eccentric in parts. What a great listen. I’m glad I finally got around to listening to this classic.
far from my favorite work from Coltrane. Still legendary.
In some ways, this album feels noisy, but I also think that is on purpose. I think the moments of chaos are intended to ring out the passion in the music. Impressive ability to follow along and play with the different time signatures. Although its just instrumental for the most part, the drum and bass carries everything along and almost makes me want to dance. Definitely felt pt.2 in my body, beautiful work. The music is intense and passionate but could see it being stressful for a listener which is why I gave 4/5 stars.
It honestly took me a few listens to appreciate this one. I think first listen through I was really indecisive on if this was just bad music that people praised, or if it was genuinely good. I did not have all the context of the album on first listen through. After reading a bit more about the album and John Coltrane and what brought him to making this album, the second listen through was a lot better. I ended up listening a total of four times through. I'm really glad this one was on Friday so I could have the weekend to digest. There's a lot of of emotion behind the instruments that I don't see other albums replicating. The phrasing behind the pervasive "a love supreme "shows how much you can take just four notes and create a world of music from just that.
Hell yeah
Bebop
I'd not listened to this before, but well aware of its reputation, even daunted. I am reasonably open to jazz, but no aficionado - I'm attracted to music with jazz aspects, rather than straight-up jazz, let alone hardcore jazz - so bop or post-bop are scary labels to me. I looked at some popular reviews here and then listened through, three times. Odd to see reviewers saying the album makes no sense, or is like "four people doing their own things" - it's quite clear to me that the band is playing together - though almost beyond me to sense, let alone say, how it is that they are playing together. The sax and piano are clearly playing in line with the strong rhythm of the drums - but I can't follow the relations of their playing to the pulse. There are chords/modes involved - but I can't follow the sequence - but it doesn't sound cacophonous (as it might if there was zero shared plan for chord sequence or zero responsiveness). I quickly appreciate that the players are incredibly skilled and educated in their specific way of playing - and I wonder whether I'm remotely equipped to appreciate it - but still I do appreciate it - it's mostly very engaging rather than offputting. (As Christgau said, listening through multiple times it doesn't get tune stale - though I didn't need to hear the drum solo more than once.) What to compare it to? It makes me think of 'difficult' but clever albums by Can and Soft Music that I've heard here on the generator journey - also classical composers like Xenakis and Ligeti - who can be highly impactful at same time as very difficult to listen to. It's phenomenal that the piano is playing recognisable chords but I can't follow them - while the sax reels out mostly intelligible phrases, but I can't follow the sequencing of lines, let alone their relationship with chords. They're deploying 'musical elements' that I can relate to, but I can't understand it at all - but at least I can be moved by energies and moods evinced by the playing. (I should say something about the bass - it's weird to me how low in the mix acoustic bass typically is - I couldn't 'get' the bass solo at all - a common difficulty for me with old school quartets.) In summary, I'm glad to have listened to it, and have an idea of what sort of thing it is. I respect it a heap, but am unlikely to go back to listening to it again. So as an achievement it could be Wonderful, but as an album for my listening tastes it comes out as Very Good, 8/10.
Not a jazz nerd at all, but that was impressive
There's lyrics? That was a surprise.
It's pretty supreme but not lovely enough for a 5.
Great, creative jazz
This really is smooth
Surprised how nice this type of music is for background noise. Never thought of myself as someone who would like this
I struggle to understand/enjoy a lot of jazz, cf bitches brew a few days ago, but this, this hits harder than that one by far- enough structure over plenty of chaos.
This is quite nice. I don’t gravitate towards jazz on my own, but this was a good one
This was a nice album. Not my all time favorite of John Coltrane but still great.
Maybe the best jazz record I've heard from this list so far. Very cohesive record and great listen with headphones.
I revisit Coltrane albums every year, especially this one and Blue Train. They are masterful works that showcase talent at a higher level than most of this list. I respect jazz incredibly and after listening to a decent amount of it, I can say that a lot of it sounds the same. It is difficult for jazz music to stand out but Coltrane always has to me.
4,5+
My first jazz album for this challenge, and honestly, a pretty great place to start. I know a lot of the enjoyment with jazz depends on whether you’re already into the genre, but luckily, I do like jazz, and I really enjoyed this. The back half was where it clicked the most for me. Part Three especially feels like every instrument is fighting for its life in a good way. Nothing fades into the background; you can practically hear the sweat and effort coming through the headphones. Then Part Four slows everything down into this darker, more mysterious sound, with those thundering timpani hits giving the album a really powerful ending. Sure, some of the tracks are long, a little repetitive, and can blur together at times, but this still feels like something worth appreciating. If this is my first stop in jazz, I’m definitely curious to see where the rest of the genre takes me.
I’m not a jazz guy. I’ve tried and I’ve tried, but to me, it seems like incredibly abstract music, so abstract that sometimes I wonder how anyone other than musicians themselves—those who understand the language of music—get much of anything out of it. Even classical, whose tradition is hundreds of years older and more remote, seems far more approachable to me. Yet even I can’t deny that this is some powerful music, melodic and impassioned. There is soloing, yes, but in this case it seems designed to carry the message of joy and hope, rather than to be simply impressive for its own sake, as I’ve felt in other jazz records. Best track: “Pt 1. – Acknowledgement”
What a trio-Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan and Coltrane. A retro weekend for the ages.
This capped a day of jazz having been at Meltdown in the afternoon for Kamasi Washington's tribute to Miles Davies, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins.
🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑 Once again helplessly screaming into the void at internet normoids who think this is just noise. THIS is just noise? And this is, I would say, pretty objective incredulity, because a lot of the jazzy riffing happens over a really consistent foundation. Like, the rhythm is fairly clear, is it not? No wonder The Birthday Party and Pere Ubu are unlistenable to some people. I have never felt the need to use sensitive derogatorily before this, but man... My expectations were set so transcendentally high for A Love Supreme that I knew I'd be let down somehow. I even tried to temper my expectations—I knew I'd have to when I read the review of the guy saying he went in skeptically but was crying halfway through Psalm—it's just that as such a feeling person, I want to deeply feel what others feel and be a part of all that feeling, you know? Anyways, I was worried it wasn't gonna click during Parts 1 & 2, but things really kicked into high gear in 3 & 4, which is when I knew this needed a second listen. Granted, I'm not sure it felt like God was in my ears or anything (although everything will pale in comparison if that's your standard), but I'm hoping by my second or third listen I'll really catch the feeling. 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
Absolutely insanely artful and a joy to listen to
good
A jazz classic
Great
If you don't pay close attention throughout, listening to jazz, is like watching a show, where you missed a episode. So, pay attention. This is not a casual listening experience.
Absolutely not my thing at all, but even then, I still know this is the Absolute best something im not into could be Feels like the Absolute peak of this genre. Very very good 4 Will likely never listen again, but now if someone mentions A Love Supreme, I can say, "I've actually listened to that" and I wont be lying
ג'אז ג'אז ג'אז פאפאפאגאז'
hhh
For an album called 'A Love Supreme' this album is not smooth and sweet. It's noisy and dynamic. I enjoyed it but it was a more active listening than I was expecting.
This was a weird one that I listened to twice; once on a tinny small speaker and another with headphones. I only really know Coltrane by reputation; my favorite jazz artists are trumpeters or bassists for the most part, so despite the legendary name his work is a bit of a blank for me. This album is a really advanced take on jazz music in general, and I don't mean that in a ivory tower kind of way. I mean that in a structural way. It's modal jazz with all the trappings of improvisational techniques only barely put together. On my first listen it really sounded cacophonous; almost like everyone had no idea what to do other than don't play a discordant melody, and they all went off in their own direction. Only with a better set of speakers did I really start to get it. You can pick out the individual themes and it all starts to come together more than at first. I wouldn't say this is easy to listen to. In fact, it was a bit of a challenge getting through it the first time. It's worth it in the end but if you don't like jazz, or you don't have some knowledge of jazz structure and theory in general, it's not going to appeal to you. This isn't going to create converts. Technically it's really great, but despite it's popularity I would firmly put this in the "for the heads" category.
Enjoyed listening to this. Not something I would actively seek out though.
banger jazz
saving this to put on during a dinner date to impress my wife
8.5/10
It isn't my style but I enjoyed it.
I liked it, very chill jazz. Amazing sound, just not my type of music
I can't tell you much about jazz. Or if I think this album is a reflection on spirituality. I just know I enjoy this album and the vibe it gives.
This one is kinda overrated honestly. I dont think its a masterpiece or anything but its still good. I dont know if I should give it a 3 or a 4 but I think I could like it more someday so 4.
A pretty good way to start my Friday. Coltrane is just so smooth.
Loved the groove. The drummer is insane! Didn't love the more maniacal bits.
This was great, it was mostly background but it was great background. Also more drum solos pls!
It’s really nice listening to people who are virtuosos. This all blends together so well.
Expectation: -> Pretty sure that I know what to expect here and hopes are high. 3 minimum with 5-level potential. After listening: -> Love the tempo variability and flow throughout. Especially enjoy the extended lively periods, typically my jazz preference. As a long ago sax player, I really appreciate his skill. The artistry his interplay with the other instrumentation, wow.
Good jazz
I don’t listen to Jazz, but this was quite good. First listen was on the drive to work, but I had to give it another listen on my HiFi system when I got home to even begin to appreciate it.
Not much of a jazz guy, but I really enjoyed this
So much musical mastery on display! Flows and shifts constantly, it's very enjoyable to listen to. Though I sometimes feel like modal jazz is harder for me to connect with since there's less sense of home/tension/resolution. Definitely feels like musician's music.
Fun jazzy and experimental. A little more chaotic than our other jazz albums so far.
dope. original. all over?
Welcome to your regularly scheduled Jazz Interlude. I like this album, but I can't say it excited me too much. The headline here is collaboration, and a lot of the time that rocks. It's a singular suite, and can't really be taken seperately but I'd highlight Resolution as being the "part" where things come together the most, the way the instruments feel out when to change "turns" of what is in the forefront is so interesting to hear. It feels like the music is dancing in sync. Unfortunately, I don't love all of this. I read up on Psalms and saw people talking about it as this profound spiritual take, and whilst the idea of "playing the words" is interesting to me, the words that are being played are... A fairly basic prayer to god. I imagine this could be profound for someone who is more attached to religion but it just washed over me. Besides that, there are a few sections where I started to get an inkling of an "okay we can move on now" feeling. Often a lot of Jazz rewards patient listening which has always posed a challenge for my ADHD to begin with, but its definitely made a lot worse by the single album a day format. So maybe it would grow on me, but for now it's a 4.
Part 4 is so fucking goated man that shit beautiful to walk home on a rainy night to. But the whole album is just such a beautiful jazz piece, fantastic drum solos and best of all, it's so beautifully atmospheric. What a fantastic album.
I don't have a lot to say about jazz albums, I enjoyed this one though. I liked how the double bass copies the chorus of "a love supreme" at the end of part 1. Part 4 was also great.
Part i - acknowledgement - 3 Part ii - resolution - 4 Pary iii - pursuance - 3 Part iv - psalm - 4
Maybe my expectations were just too high, but I’m only giving John Coltrane’s *A Love Supreme* four stars today. Coltrane was an outstanding saxophonist, and I admire many of his works and solos—such as the 1960's album "Giant Steps" (that should actually be on this list) or his collaborations with Miles Davis. *A Love Supreme* consists of four movements and, in terms of structure, is reminiscent of a classical concerto. Long passages are spectacular, but for me, the atmospheric sections lose their way too quickly into the mundane. These and the extended solos work better if you listen to the album with intense concentration—but the truly outstanding albums manage to captivate even the slightly distracted listener. Of course, “A Love Supreme” is still a legend that every music lover should know.
*listened before the project* A sacrifice, a long road.
Solid album, has a nice balance if the frenetic pace and groove. Personally love part 3, because if that drum solo at the beginning
I like this. Easy to listen to. Always seem to enjoy jazz. However, I dont feel like I know enough about jazz to give this more or less than a 4.
great omg
One of my all time favorite jazz albums. Was lucky enough to have this one on vinyl already and thoroughly enjoyed listening. The power, speed, and emotion with which Coltrane plays is incredible.
Good stuff, new to me
Classic jazz love the progression between the 4 songs.
I'm not really into Jazz but this album really got me into it
I love how it started out as an electrifying album and then ended so seamlessly with psalm. It was a full body experience. Amazing to see how music governs your emotions and your body.
me likes jazz
Great jazz album.
Interesting.
One of my go to albums when I'm in a jazzy mood. Great.
wonderful!
Got into that after a couple of listens, it’s pretty cool. As always with jazz I prefer the rhythm section, and they were fantastic, and even allowed solos for once.
I feel like the ideal listening experience for this album is on vinyl, sat back in an old, leather armchair while sipping neat, Japanese whiskey. To be fair, I think that would improve the listening experience for most albums.
I’m out of my depth here but I don’t need a technical grasp of the sax or a lengthy mental library to know this was ahead of its time. Any musician who is comfortable enough with his work to add in compositional moments of near-silence after minutes of crazed instrumentation is in his bag. It was so captivating to hear this technique being employed about eight minutes in to part 3. I think it’s the moment that sticks with me the most, that upright bass solo just kinda faded into view out of nowhere. Easy 4/5 for me and I don’t blame anyone who thinks this project is perfect
I like jazz but never know where to start. This was a nice recommendation.
A great jazz album. If you are looking for something og and fun, this is the album for you
A Love Supreme A Love Supreme A Love Supreme
Yessssss play that cymballlllll. I do love a double bass and John’s sax playing is incredible. A really enjoyable listen.
maybe i have a short attention span but i was getting a bit bored with the pure sax esp for most of part one, and wouldn't miss the random ahh vocals. brought it back in part two though the whole one at a time traditional (jazz) style is just a little much for me especially when there's nothing else (and it goes on soooo long), im defo more of a big band fan (influenced by mario kart and musical theatre...). just not quite enough to my taste to generate a stank face (which would be five star territory) however there is a reason Coltrane is the jazz bar password. Massive icon, and massive amounts of skill whole way thru. And I did think this was overall good. Four stars.
I don't listen to a lot of jazz but I can appreciate good jazz and this is good jazz Didn't like the vocals at the end of the first song sorry I think the album would have been better just 100% instrumental I feel like this is something you want to pay attention to while you listen rather than listening passively also. I'm gonna try it again when I have more attention to pay to it and I think I'll enjoy it better
I think of most post-30’s jazz as something just meant to be put on as background music. This is the opposite of that. It demands and rewards your attention.
Отличное звуковое сопровождения для моего вчерашнего тревожного состояния. Авангардный джаз как раз был в тему. Хотелось бы чтобы таких дней было поменьше, но в закладки данный альбом стоит добавить.
Pretty good!
C'est pas mal en vrai
I'm sure I miss a lot because I'm a knuckle-dragging moron but still a very dense, listenable jazz album. Highlight: "Pursuance"
Not a great deal to say here. A brilliant jazz record by all accounts. Less to my taste than some of my favorites but it's hard to deny that Coltrane is a wizard.
Love this. Beautiful music
As someone who’s still only really scratching the surface of jazz music, this was a good introduction to the more abstract side of it, as it didn’t just feel avant garde for the sake of being avant garde. I loved the overall feeling the album gave me.
I found this a difficult album to rate as I probably admire it more than I enjoy it. It’s certainly not as accessible as some of Coltrane’s work I’m more familiar with, such as ‘Blue Train’, ‘My Favo[u]rite Things’, ‘Giant Steps’ and the like. It’s more avant-garde, more influenced by free jazz than those earlier albums. That said, there are still strong hooks, especially on side one, and the playing is fantastic. However, while this album is almost universally regarded as a masterpiece, right now I can’t quite give it the maximum score. Perhaps in time I will do so.
Gut, aber mir eigentlich zu wild.
Refreshing album, never hearded this kind of album before but it was really cool. You can play it while studying as well
Pretty good
What a wonderful little jam this is.
I spent some time in my 20s trying to culture myself by getting into whisky, cigars, and jazz. The whisky was the only one that stuck but there was some Miles and Coltrane I really liked including this one. Still do
4.0 - Very Good
Smooth Jazzzzzzzz
That's undeniably a great and talented collection of musicians making music. I'm not a big fan of jazz, but this was good.
I’m not sure I truly get it but I definitely appreciate the musicianship, I can feel how genuinely masterful this is although at times it feels like random playing (a me issue)
I enjoyed it, but I think I'd need to listen again to appreciate it more.
Not a big jazz fan,but it sounds really good
Soothing and pleasing
Very well grounded and such stories told through only instrumentals. It’s not too experimental and though it goes on for a while at times it is really interesting stuff and pushing forward the intention set at the beginning of the song and album. Really love when a certain instrument takes control and leads the rest. Awesome sounds overall that stay simple but have a unique motive in every moment.
Solid jazz
(more coming)
I have not been a fan of jazz, I do not have a formed opinion and at the level of taste what I highlight is the use of the saxophone, it has cheerful vibes the contrast with the drums and the energy it transmits they feel pleasant to listen to them. To be a first approach to this genre I think it was good, I wouldn't add it to my playlist and I wouldn't have them in rotation either but it was a pleasant listening
Great Songs: A Love Supreme, Pt. 2: Resolution Good Songs: A Love Supreme, Pt. 1: Acknowledgement, A Love Supreme, Pt. 3: Persuance, A Love Supreme, Pt. 4: Psalm Mid Songs: Bad Songs:
L: N/A M: 9 F: 8 O: 8
Enjoyed it love jazz but I lean more toward ballads and bebop Charlie Parker style
One of my favorite jazz albums.
Not my style but the instrumental are cool.
i adored this, it makes me feel like i’m walking down town on an autumn day and the world is here for me to see. so atmospheric
It’s pretty immediately apparent why this is such a highly acclaimed album. It’s gorgeous and has very nice smooth sax playing 🙂↕️ beyond that, I know this music is interesting but it’s not necessarily entertaining to me. Also love the bass. Fav songs: a love supreme, pt. II - resolution
Jee vanhaa jatsia.
Album No. 0198 on my list. I know very, very, very little about Jazz. I'm fully aware thought that "A Love Supreme" is considered to be one of the greatest Jazz records of all time, possibly *the* greatest (maybe tied with Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue"). I actually had listened to this several times before, and I had liked it. I didn't remember much of it however because I just don't have the taste for jazz, much less a proper vocabulary to describe it. I still can say that it's pretty, pretty good, though. It rightfully has its place on the 1001 album list as one of the few Jazz albums that actually made this assortment of pop music. The music on "A Love Supreme" is fast, playful and yet somehow still sounds serious. There is a lot of dynamic in all four tracks, and even with my very limited knowledge can understand how well the band members were able to play their instruments. I'll add "Pt. I - Acknowledgement", and "Pt. II - Resolution" to my playlist. I hope that someday I have time to get more into Jazz, because it would deliver a sense of superiority. Well, and because I actually like the music. This record will certainly be one of the starting points for a tentative future venture into Jazz of mine. 4/5 stars!
Good to listen to jazz every now and then
Yeah it's cool, it would have been better with a whiskey and a dusty vinyl record of it in a shadily lit room on my own, instead I had my commute in the car to work on a Wednesday morning. So, I loved it, but I felt like I needed to consume this differently. Will try again with this one another day. For the meantime it's a 4.
A very good jazz album.

riktigt skönt
This is great. I almost felt like I was in the room with him, just listening to him jam.
Great record, but nothing I would listen to on a daily basis. For that it's a bit too heavy.
Now that’s a palette cleanser right there Love this album; every part feels so dynamic yet so important. The transitions are just so cool, love the key change between the first two parts and that awesome drum solo to open up Pursuance. Definitely think Pursuance is my favorite part but I feel like singling out any track on here kinda defeats the whole purpose; it’s an experience. I’ve heard this album described as spiritual a lot and I can definitely see it. Just the right length too, it just feels like it covers everything it needs to cover. I really don’t have any problems with this one at all, it’s pretty close to perfect, but I think jazz is going to be a genre I will always love but not absolutely adore. I think the fact that you pretty much have to listen to the whole album in one sitting to really enjoy it makes it a bit less suitable for casual listening. Still though, from a music perspective this is absolutely one of the best albums ever made, just slightly out of reach for a 5 for me
I liked how it was in 4 movements, gives it that classical feeling I'm not the best when it comes to smooth jazz because the complexities tend to go over my head and melt into background noise, but for what it's worth, it's a nice listen, if a little less energetic than I'd like
Nice vibe and pretty short, just some good music to put on. I am kind of a sucker for jazz, but it is just a cool album to listen to.
good introduction point for jazz! actually my first ever proper jazz album and john coltrane lowkey clears miles davis ✌️ fav: part 2: resolution least fav: part 4: psalm
I'm not a jazz listener and generally will not listen to any type of jazz. I was very surprised by this album. I genuinely enjoyed this album (with a few minutes here or there that I didn't like) and would listen to it again and probably even buy the album
Well, it's like the time that your cat Snowball got run over. Uh-huh. Remember, honey? Yeah. What I'm saying is, all we have to do... is go down to the pound and get a new jazzman. Oh, Dad!
Nice.
im not at the level of wisdom and maturity to understand this musical piece but it would be great to revisit this in the future
Jazz encendido
4 out of 5. This album flew by in a good way. Short and smooth.
Just a perfect, classic jazz album. The title truly does fit. Its a love letter to Jazz.
Anyone got the lyrics for this one?
Every time a jazz album comes up in this list, I find myself saying exactly the same thing: I don't fully “get” it. I can tell that there's something interesting and creative going on, but a lot of it goes over my head. I've listened to this album several times on repeat now, and I think I'm starting to get it. The first thing that stood out to me was towards the end of Part III. I absolutely love the bass break. At first it felt like Jimmy Garrison had been trying to end the song for like 5 minutes, but kept forgetting what he was doing. After a while I didn’t want it to end. Elvin Jones's drum breaks in this part are fantastic too. It's McCoy Tyner’s piano that I had the hardest part gelling with. I know that those dissonant piano chords are common in this style of jazz, but I always find it difficult to take. I do have to admit that, after a few listens, I didn't mind it so much. I can understand how it works almost as percussive texture, blending into the chaotic drumming. Coltrane playing each syllable of his poem (or at least a musical interpretation of it) in “Part IV - Psalm” is so damn clever. That whole “music as language” motif that's going on throughout the whole album is really interesting. The double bass playing the phrase “A Love Supreme” throughout Part 1 is brilliant too. It starts with the bass repeating the line, but evolves over time to Coltrane’s sax, before his voice takes over, chanting the line over and over like a mantra. I'm not a religious person, in fact as a staunch atheist I'm quite the opposite. But I understand the sort of transcendent state that can come from immersing yourself in musical experimentation like this. That's what it feels like Coltrane and his band are going through across these four pieces. I still don't fully “get” jazz, but maybe I'm starting to.
I'm not a jazz fan, and I'm not a sax fan, but I may be a fan of this as background music. Nice vibe. Influence 5. Hits 2. Quality 4. Intangibles 4. I don't hate it 3.
Blind album, know the artist, have heard of the album. Honestly it was a good listen. Something very unique and special, but still can't quite give it a 5.
Great album. Shoutout Elvin Jones
Supreme
Just some incredible jazz music, not too much more you can say about it.
I always feel distinctly unsuited to the task of rating or appreciating the many forms of jazz that we occasionally come across in this collection, and this album falls very much in this space. But while this doesn't have quite the same accessibility as Brubeck's "Time Out", it's both succinct enough and engaging enough to keep my attention and interest, which I really appreciated. (The last jazz album I had, not too long ago, was Miles Davis' epically too-long and largely impenetrable "Bitches Brew", while this current album is a refreshing contrast in both dimensions.) I particularly enjoyed the contrasts in the instruments, with both drums and saxophone often competing at who can make the most rapid solo snatches (not to mention the extended drum solo in "Part III - Pursuance"), while the bass and piano literally hum along on their own paths that seem to pull the others together. I also enjoyed reading about how many (many) people consider this a very spiritual album; I didn't really hear/feel that aspect, but I suspect that's largely because I don't have much experience listening to jazz. And because so many other people *do* have this experience, and rate this so highly among the jazz album pantheon, I feel compelled to rate this higher than my personal enjoyment would otherwise. Besides, how many albums do you get a chance to hear that have inspired an entire church to enshrine it as their central text (a la Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco)?
Coltrane is a legend for a reason. This particular style of jazz isn't my absolute favorite, so I wouldn't run out and buy this, but at no point did I not like listening to it.
Love supreme for John Coltrane!
Imagine studying for decades on how to blow through a formed piece of brass to make sounds and then figuring out new ways those sounds fit together. Then imagine getting a group of mates, who hit stuff and pluck big strings and do drugs, and make that collective racket fit together in even more ways. Then imagine showing up at a recording studio and basically wing it using all this collective knowledge to make a recording that included a poem to god. And then imagine other humans listening to that recording, and imagine your music altering their souls. Magic. Then imagine some little asshole on the internet giving you four (4) stars 60 years later.
Somehow hadn’t listened to this despite having friends try to get me into jazz in the past. Part 1 was a bit too jazz for me, but once I was able to find the groove I really loved it. I’ll probably try to find more comprehensive (?) jazz albums moving forward?
Classic jazz form The Train.
Lets sax and piano shine and amazing drums
very nice jazz music, added a few songs to study for
Sad that this is the only Coltrane album on the list. So many amazing albums from him missing that allowed jazz to cross over to the mainstream yet also albums that challenged the very notions of jazz at the time (see: Ascention). As a longtime musician, I owe a lot to Coltrane - he was probably the first jazz frontman that I studied about. This is a wonderful album, a gateway album for many into better jazz music, but woefully overplayed. Psalm is probably my favorite standout track, displaying his entry into more spiritual, esoteric ideas that would most leave their mark on me, musically speaking. For me, this is more of a 4.5 - beautiful and mythical, but just getting started. Hopefully many of you on the website have continued to listen more if this was a first time album.
This album is lined with incredible bebop playing, and is just completely jaw dropping and daring from start to finish. That being said, it’s not really something that I would put on all the time, but it’s definitely a fantastic record and worth hearing!
So listening to "A Love Supreme" is like being on a seriously powerful spiritual trip through music. Even though I'm not a jazz person usually, I was totally blown away by the quartet of Coltrane, Tyner, Garrison, and Jones, their playing was super immersive. From the first gong to the last note of "Psalm", it feels like one big, thoughtful piece that really demands your attention. Yeah, it can be a bit intense at times, even a little challenging, but it's also incredibly powerful and moving. Coltrane's sax just rips your soul, you know? It's a complex, beautiful thing that I can keep going back to and still find new stuff in. I really dug it.
Particularly loved the last song. Going to melt into this album a few more times. How did I never hear this? But it doesn’t feel iconic or inevitable, like Kind of Blue? Fair to compare? I don’t know.
Definitely jazz, not my usual listen, but I enjoyed it
Really love how Coltrane writes lyrics without writing lyrics. Like it's clear he has a word in mind for his notes. Generally jazz moves me but I don't have the range to critique it, feels like high art where I just let it wash over me. Feels like a bath. So I can't say why I like it I just do
A Love Supreme, Indeed I have been getting into more jazz recently, and John Coltrane was someone I had listened to a little, but never this album. I’m glad to have found it now. It has quickly made its way onto my jazz playlist. I usually think of jazz as a “coffee on a rainy day” kind of soundtrack, and this one hits that at times, but it also has bursts of energy and intensity. Even if jazz isn’t usually your thing, it’s easy to appreciate the skill and drive here. You can understand why it is considered a pinnacle in jazz and in music overall. Overall, I give it 4.5 out of 5. A beautifully executed album that proves greatness is felt, not forced.
Histórico.
Uuu
Inoffensive Jazz
It's jazz!
Love john coltrane but need to be in the mood for jazz
I really need to be in the mood for this, technically brilliant, but nothing to hook me... It's like a 30 min Solo, kinda cool but also exhausting.
I wish I knew more about jazz to be able to rate this project more critically. It was very good and that's all I can say. 4/5
muy chill. ideal para relajar de noche.
Not the biggest jazz fan, but this is undeniably a fantastic album. we all deserve a love supreme
A lovely 32 minutes: it’s a compliment that I thought the album was much longer.
Favorite tracks: Part III - Pursuance, Part IV - Psalm Soulful and enchanting, you could get lost in these sprawling compositions for hours.
Great
8/10 smoooooth
Psalm
CUTEEE
Found this easier to get into than when I first tried four or five years ago. That said, it's post-bop era isn't one of my favourites, and I am probably more of an Alice-stan. That said, the way Resolution explodes into life is incredible, and love the epic sound of Psalm.
Really good! I've never sat down and actually listened to jazz, so I was excited when I got this album first. Its on the shorter side though. Four songs totaling for just over 32 minutes left me wanting way more, but I'm satisfied with what I heard. 9/10
It's relax
Very enjoyable, a classic jazz album
i dont like albums with 10 minute sogs but you know im giving the first song a listen
Pica mas não é o tipo de som que eu escuto no fone
Só a bateria de purscuance ato IV já merece 5 estrelas, no entanto perde uma pela cantoria desalmada do final da primeira faixa.
