7.63/10 4/5 solid.

It's jazz!

Wow great vibes - love this.

Just based off the first song I really like it. The great thing about jazz is you can have so many emotions about it.

A fun and challenging listen, though less mind-bending than Giant Steps. Coltrane's magic in this period seems to be built on stretching our concept of what chords are allowed to follow one another and still be considered music. McCoy Tyner holds the key together on the piano and the rhythm is wrangled by Elvin Jones, sounding for all the world like he's actively falling down the stairs while recording. Jimmy Garrison plays bass and I barely noticed him most of the time, either owing to my anemic headphones or to his miraculous ability to glue together the pieces of a shattered vase while they're still flying. None of that probably sounds very pleasant to listen to but it really is. It's weird and it is frantic and it does challenge the rules. However, Coltrane's great gift may be to remind us that there are no rules (like many greats) and also that any rules we have are much more interesting and much more clear when we're either breaking or bending them. Eat your vegetables and listen to Coltrane. Some of you won't like it but many of you will. 4/5

I feel sophisticated as fuck listening to this

Well rounded. Not super experienced with jazz yet, but this sounds great. 7.5/10 ... ???

Lovely.

Not as good as Bitches Brew, happened to get these back to back. Really wish there was a 10 point rating system, this isn’t a 5, but it isn’t a 4

This one is a banger! One of the greatest jazz albums of all time. 3.8.

It was really good, at one point it got kind of stressful, but it prompted me to listen to 1 black album everyday for black history month and i put a couple of his other albums there

Disjointed but beautiful jazz album. Favorite track was #2

Good. It’s long tho, but that’s not bad. They all sound the same.

Jazz like showcase? Idk

So smooth

Absurdo, nunca tinha ouvido um álbum de jazz antes, muito bom. Que sax incrível.

Good Jazz, overstay because it was repetitive to some length, but i think aged well.

Strong notes, a little short.

Enjoyed this more than the other jazz albums i've listened to.

Awesome.

Just awesome Jazz.

very good atmosphere, all the musicians seem to be enjoying themselves on these improvisational (i presume) pieces i like the closing chant on track 1 “a love supreme, a love supreme” track 3 has a really nice tempo and groove - and the bass solo part is great. overall i liked this album, not my usual style but it sounds nice and i wouldnt mind spinning it whilst i was doing other things, it has a nice relaxed vibe. short but to the point.

Пойдет

I don't really have an ear for jazz yet but this is fire for sure

Interesting. Since I don't know how to start rating them yet. 4 stars.

Good but a tad short

80/100.

Inspiring

One of the best jazz albums I’ve ever listened to. That being said I’m not a jazz guy so I’m not as high on this as some would be

It's not the most relaxing of records, what with the drum solos, tappy drum brushes, and saxes saxing all over the place. My brain is now very unquiet. But although out of my comfort zone, I appreciated it a lot. I learned today that this is probably Avant Garde jazz. And I agree, yes, yes it is.

The musical journey through the album's themes makes total sense to me. Even though getting close to my limit for modal/hard bop/post bop this is a wonderful piece of work.

This is a tough one to give a proper review after just a few listens. It can be a challenging listen at times but worth it.

Whoever wrote the review comparing this to someone falling on a piano, I simultaneously love and hate you. I read that before I listened, and as a result, kept getting the giggles. I honestly quite enjoyed this, having never gone out of my way to listen to jazz before. I do understand when people say that all the instruments are just doing their own thing, but I don't really agree... This album is fundamentally instrumental, ignoring the one vocal (which was probably one of my least favourite parts of the whole thing), and it gives each instrument a chance to shine and come to the forefront, but even when those solo sections "wander" and start to sound like they're going way off track, it never lasts all that long before it all goes back to one cohesive piece again. I enjoyed some of the instrumental solo sections more than others - have to say that Pursuance lost me a little with the prolonged bass section. The amount of expression forced out of the instruments on this album is mind blowing - and it's all raw, there's no synthetic effects being applies to amplify or exaggerate it. Pretty incredible really, even if it's not to everyone's specific tastes, I think that aspect deserves recognition. Highlights: "Resolution" and "Psalm" were both absolute jams that I'll happily listen to again.

скорее не мое

Commonly seen as Coltrane's masterpiece, and one of the seminal works of modal jazz. It is much lauded for its nod to the future trend of free jazz and its sort-of-spiritual mystique. The artistry is clear, but it just doesn't seem to resonate with me like it does with its adherents. Maybe I'm just a hard-bop purist, but I've always liked Giant Steps more as a complete work. Pts. II - "Resolution" and III - "Pursuance" stand as the peak of the album to me, largely due to their tighter structure and closer adherence to hard bop norms and traditional song structure. Pt. IV - "Psalm" does well in bridging some of the freer expression seen later and the modal framework Coltrane was versed in working within. It's possible that this is why this album deserves so much respect, it makes an emotional statement that's resonated with so many while managing to tie all of the trends in this era of jazz together. There is something to be said for his signature playing style, hard, loud and fast- quoted as "sheets of sound" IIRC. It always keeps listening to his work fresh and interesting. From the accompaniments in the quartet, the playing is utilitarian and immaculate, and I think Garrison's moody bass solo at the end of Pt. III stands out as a highlight as well.

You hear so much jazz sampled or influencing current music that it's nice to dive into a Coltrane album for a half hour of instrumentals. I particularly enjoyed some of the slower and more measured parts of the album, like the beginning keys/brass in Pt 1 and the darker strings at the end of Pt 3. The first 3 tracks can drag a bit for me in the middle (I'm not always the biggest fan of extended freeform brass), but the sax work throughout Pt 4 is absolutely beautiful.

Great work music, skillful jazz, beautiful sounds, are you edging or are you gooning Neiman?!

very fast, love the sax, change of pace music wise and I liked it

As someone who grew up playing jazz, I was introduced to this album early on, as it played such a pivotal role in shaping jazz and its legacy in America. Coltrane’s saxophone feels like a direct extension of his voice; his ability to improvise both beautifully lyrical melodies and intensely avant-garde, rhythmically driven ideas is truly extraordinary. I hadn’t listened to this album in a long time, so returning to it was a deeply welcome and rewarding experience.

Had been looking to check this one out for a long time, so it was a pleasant surprise! Really really cool, I love so much about this, especially the big piano sections. I love the massive cacophonous moments, as well as the softer quiet ones. Also, was not expeciting to hear any vocals on this one so that was really cool. I still think im digesting this one tbh so may rating may change, I'm a bit stuck between a 4 and a 5, I think this definetely has potential to be a 5, but I dont this its registered that high for me yet, so a 4 for now.

love these drums

It was great. Will revisit. Standout tracks: -A Love Supreme Pt. III-Persuance -A Love Supreme Pt. IV-Psalm Least favorite tracks: N/A Listened to while driving to work. Made me long for New Orleans.

In the hands of a lesser artist, this could have been a dull or overwrought plod through some jazz tunes. John Coltrane is not lesser in any sense of the word… I will be back

It's John Coltrane. An easy 4 stars. I'd nearly give 5 if it weren't for the brief vocal chanting during "Acknowledgement."

Ya Like Jazz???? Alright, I am excited to hear some jazz. I liked it, I caught myself dancing often. Bring back the 7 minute song

This was excellent, my only complaint is that at tines it feels a little excessive with the noodling, but that’s probably more of a personal preference than anything. 4+ stars

Woowee I love some jazz

Ik luister normaal niet naar jazz, maar ik vond het verrassend leuk! Ik zou het zeker vaker opzetten als k moet leren of concentreren op iets. Rating 7/10 ⭐️

Приятный джазовый альбом

New Artist. Delightful

This guy's pretty talented in jazz music during the heyday of jazz. Let me check his biography: >Addicted to heroin >Multiple marriages >Heavy drinker >Dies of liver cancer set on by hepatitis Yeah he's a jazz musician

8/10 - jazz, short and sweet

Great early morning vibes

day 1 JOHN COLTRANE SLAYYY shes already in my libraryyy slayy

Good jazz album

The sound of stress. I think I say that mostly because this kind of jazz has been recently featured on shows that denote stress through layers of multitasking and commitment. Also because my life denotes that sort of stress rn. Lastly because Murray gives Jonathan Byers a tape of Love Supreme complete with an extra little something in the final season of Stranger Things. All reasons to mightily respect this record.

Not my favorite bit of jazz, but still a great listen. However, jazz is normally better live than in studio, so keep that in mind.

This is the best entry level jazz album, contrary to what some people might tell you (I'm looking at you, Kind of Blue). It's accessible and easy to enjoy and just throw on whenever but without losing any of the excitement. The playing is still incredible and very detailed, with many cool parts like the random drum solos. The compositions are great, the songs flow so naturally and don't lose any of the good vibe throughout. It doesn't quite reach the highs of some of my favorite jazz albums and that's the only thing preventing it from being a 10/10, but it's an incredible journey and one everyone should listen to.

Silver dollars. Red roses. Gin and tonics. Knobby knuckles. 2am.

Pretty good. Pretty chill.

Pretty gd jzzzz Nicee listen fwybt

Cool Jazz album Have never listened to an all instrumental album so definitely different way to start things off but I actually really enjoyed it. I won’t be listening to this everyday but it’s definitely really impressive and worth the listen

I’ve been on a journey with jazz for at least 20 years now. I’ve gone from someone who veered between ambivalence and disgust at the genre to someone who loves it. I always had reasonably broad musical tastes in general, but some genres required more maturity in me than others to be able to embrace. No matter how much I learn about jazz and listen to it, I get the feeling I may always feel like a bit of an outsider. Thing is I don’t actually think it matters. I might not fully understand what I’m listening to, but I know what I like. Knowing why I like it isn’t important. I like A Love Supreme. A lot. Luckily it wasn’t one of the first Trane albums I got because there’s no way I would’ve been ready for it back then. It’s another one of those albums that is going to continue to reveal itself to me gradually for the rest of my life. I’m still in a place where I prefer his hard bop from earlier in the 60s. One day I expect to realise that spiritual/free is the Coltrane that matters the most, but until then I’m not marking this up from a 4 to a 5 just cos it has such an incredible reputation. It does seem outrageous that this is his only album on the list though!

V good

Really interesting. Challenging at times (drum solo and double bass solo), but really engaging.

Jazz enérgico, elegante pero brioso Se hace notar, no hace concesiones

Very good

Recorded in a single session, apparently, at a time when albums followed one another quickly. That’s always impressive. I’ve never really explored Coltrane beyond Blue Train and a few mixes or playlists, so this felt like a good opportunity to approach him differently. The opening of the first track leaves me fairly indifferent, then I slowly drift in, carried by the music’s almost celestial beauty. There’s an incredible amount of vibes here, and a real variety of moods. Still, even if I get what it’s trying to express, Psalm disappoints me, even if I understand it’s part of a concept album centered on faith. In the end, it’s really the two central tracks that genuinely excited me, even moved me, on first listen. Because of that, I struggle to give it five stars at first listen, but I’ll come back to it. I actually really enjoyed it, and I might change my mind later.

man I love jazz

I've been wanting to listen to jazz albums lately! So I was really glad to hear this one today. It was a bit repetitive but it was soothing.

My first album from the generator. Sometimes I listen to the more “cozy/lounge” version of jazz but I really enjoyed having another jazz experience! The drum work is amazing and I cannot comprehend how some people are capable of making music so complex. Adore it!! 15/12-2025

c’est drôle d’avoir un deuxième album de 1965 en deux jours mdrrr c’est top 100 albums sur apple music petite ambiance bar jazz pour bosser ajd

I like jazz, I swear. I just don't like it when 4 jazz musicians are playing 7 different songs at the same time. In the few times it's cohesive and not "battle of the instruments," I really liked what I heard. That's just not what's happening a majority of the time here. I'm willing to stipulate this album is one of the best of all time if I can be forgiven not getting it and thinking it sounds like competent musicians in different studios trying to psychically sense what the three other musicians are playing somewhere else. ⭐⭐

Like an 8 out of ten man

A difficult but rewarding listen

They say sax changes everything, and it most certainly does here. So many tempo and key changes it's as if John is communicating with the divine.

Incredible musicianship

Jazz is something I don't losten to enough. This album is almost hypnotic. A great example of the genre.

Jazz is crazy man, enjoyed it but absolutely confusing lmao

Chaotic. Complex. Controlled. Soothing yet stressful.

listened to this in the rain, lovely experience. no highlights just very solid throughout enjoy clo :3

I don't think I necessarily have a great ear for jazz, but I thought this album was well done!

Album review 018 A Love Supreme by John Coltrane (1965) Rating 4/5 Viewed by many as one of the greatest works of music ever recorded, but I’ve never managed understand A Love Supreme. Sure, the musicianship is exceptional and it’s unlike anything recorded up to that point (according to my limited understanding of all things Jazz), but the dissonance of Coltrane’s playing is something I struggle to appreciate. I know I’ll listen to this many more times and gradually come to learn how and why the music and instruments work together (or against one another??) on a technical level but right now, this is an album I respect rather than love.

sax sells.

Not my thing but sooo good

Pretty good album! Definitely saw a lot of his spiritual influence on this wish the bass was louder in the mix lol

4 I mean to be so fed up with duke wellington the day before and then having this the next day hahah what a contrast it’s just such a nice listen this is what all jazz should be like and that’s the only true opinion in the world

Excellent album, it creates such a strong atmosphere. It is entirely ‘of its time but in the best way’. One of the few jazz albums where the limited vocal aspects are quite alright, as it lets the musicians do their thing. It is creative without being inaccessible and it is a jazz album I will genuinely return to. Almost a 5.

So moody and emotional. Its a vast soundscape that draws you in. I love the deft tinkering on the cymbals. Unlike some Jazz it does have a story to tell and it does evolve through the album. It makes you want to listen to its changes and flow. I enjoyed mulling this over on repeat and just seeing where it took me each time.

Long time classic. I don't really like jazz, but this is one of my handful of go to jazz records.

the first Jazz album i ever bought on vinyl. It was a joy to put it on the turntable this morning, sit down with a coffee and do my 1001 album for the day. A Love Supreme... A Love Supreme... A Love Supreme...

Sometimes it's just about the timing of a record, that eventually impacts the review. Perfect Monday morning music, thank you!

Loved it. Instantly transports me to a dimly lit Jazz club.

Tried listening to this maybe 25 years ago and really didn't get it. It sure did click today. I feel like I've been missing out but I guess I just had to wait until I was ready.

Best Song: A Love Supreme, Pt. I - Acknowledgment I think jazz may be growing on me. I didn't mind this nearly as much as a lot of the other things on here. Still not something I foresee myself going ga-ga for and listening to often but maybe when working/writing/cleaning, it could be good background music. 4/5.

rip john he wouldve loved supreme

A good one

Crazy crazy!

A deep dive in the world of jazz. Sax, piano, drums and double bass blend together. I found keeping track of all the sounds at once very challenging - but rewarding as well. Just as I felt that I had lost all reference -with all the chords and instruments accumulating - a sudden burst of music (and energy) would bring me back to full attention. Acknowledgement Resolution Pursuance Psalm; thunder and sax: how could a start be better than that? Then the piano and the drums enter the scene. Sweetness and suspence cohexist - tension builds up, but the sax and the piano make sure that it neither explodes nor fades out. The sax is gentle and reaches your heart but touches it very lightly.

Best Song: They're all pretty good. Worst Song: Not a song per se, but I'm not a big fan of the vocals Overall: I don't consider myself a Jazz Guy, but I've always liked this album. It feels very approachable while still obviously being jazz. There are tons of really satisfying jazz licks, and the drums are really excellent the whole way through.

It was excellent returning to this album today, I used to listen to it quite often and it’s still just as great as ever.

A great Jazz album by a wonderful musician. Always worth a listen

Good album, a bit wild.

It goes hard! Without getting some of the finer details I can certainly enjoy it and its exciting energy.

We’ve gotten some good ass jazz albums on this list I tell you hwat

4 out of 5 Great jazz and I cannot even really appreciate Jazz. Sounds awesome and made me want to move.

Good stuff.

oh wow i've listened to this. It was good. Like, it's so very much art. Creativity. Like, making food while listening to this and creating something, is like peak life.

4.5 Classic for a reason!

this kind of jazz isn’t really for me, i like the soothing and relaxing more piano based jazz. granted this is very impressive and obviously a lot of talent and skill involved. but the only way i could listen to it was to put it on in the background. still going to give it a 4 i think. it’s just a bit too sharp and harsh on my ears for me to be able to really enjoy it, but it still deserves a high rating. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wish there were half star ratings, I’d give it 4.5. Very nice, occasionally sporadic.

Haven't listened to a ton of jazz but this was solid. Nice instrumentals

I don't listen to a lot of jazz, particularly American jazz, but there are a handful of classic albums that a friend put me onto a long time ago. Those are the ones that I will draw on and this is one of them. I have to be in the mood though and luckily today I was. It goes all over the place, constantly moving but it bursts with energy and life and is utterly compelling. I had to stop my work today to listen at one point during Pursuance.

I was worried this might be a little avant-garde for my tastes, but once we got to Resolution the entire rest of the album was gorgeous. Love it

Solid Jazz. Loved the first and last track

It’s great but also an acquired taste.

What a wonderful journey this was. Space given to each musician to shine and the album moves by at such a pace (driven largely by the frenetic drumming) that it’s hard to keep up with, the shifting modes constantly creating this disorienting sound. The last track in particular is a great epilogue to what came before, tying it off nicely.

If there's one thing I can always count on for jazz, it's that it takes me out of the mundaneness of life and makes me feel like I'm on a movie set. Never mind the movie is a mundane slice of life film, it's still a movie. I watch the traffic from my tower, see the trains go in and out, watch people walk by. I feel I'm part of something greater. I can't claim to be an afficionado or some jazz expert, but ¨A Love Supreme¨ is magnificent. That's really all I want from an album, to be transported, and that's what I get. Just what the doctor ordered for a Monday. Best song: ¨Pursuance¨

Ah, so this what Whiplash was about.

One of the top jazz albums ever for a reason. It's awesome. 9/10

A Love Supreme > A Taco Supreme It’s close though!

Very emotional. Even with only instruments

Pt. 3 & 4 are masterful. Phenomenal touch and nuance by all players, especially Coltrane.

Jazzklassiker!

Took me through a whole range of emotions. May not be my whole cup of tea but I surely felt that it was his! Well played, John. Well played.

It’s John Coltrane. It’s fantastic jazz. Of course it’s great.

Technically very very good. My only issue is that it becomes a little monotonous. 4.5/5

Eesh, it's so delightfully bright and breezy, but by no means lightweight. Even I, a jazz novice and agnostic, can recognise the virtuoso playing throughout this, but somehow that's not the thing that makes it good. There's plenty of jazz that contains evidently fantastic players, but none of the discipline required to make it an enjoyable listen. This though - it's slightly behind Miles Davis (don't check the scores, I'm nothing if not capricious), but it's still excellent.

Very intense album. It had some great moments where I was really into it. All of the participants really shone at times. It was more of a single multi-part song than an album. Definitely worth some more listens, but I'd probably reach for it when I feel like listening to a symphony, which is not very often.

Very classic, very stylistic—distinct themes for distinct acts. Just very beautiful instruments all-around.

I enjoyed A Love Supreme more than i thought i would have. I'm not usually a fan of these really noisy jazz albums but since this is a "You gotta be in the mood to really enjoy it" kind of album and i was in that mood (I will tell you why in the side note) I enjoyed this album a fair bit more than i thought i would have. I thought that the musicianship on offer sounded pretty good for being a typical noisy jazz album. I don't really have too strong of an opinion on the vocals on Track 1 but i thought that they fit the song well enough. The album was pretty short too so that was nice as well. On it's own merits, this album was only really worth a 3 star rating but since i was in that mood, I'm giving it an extra half a star. Best Song: A Love Supreme, Part II - Resolution Worst Song: A Love Supreme, Part IV - Psalm (Side note: Ok, so while i was listening to this album (the first half at least), i was having a heated discussion about some funny scenarios for an upcoming game with 2 people in a Discord server, that heightened my enjoyment of this album a fair bit. So congratulations to the two people who i had that discussion with, You made John Coltrane's ghost proud)

Lost my notes. Fun jazz, maybe worth a 5 but I don't feel like listening again right now. Probably a sign that 4 is the right rating. Felt whimsical and upbeat.

1965 Jazz generally suits me, but the right mindset is essential. Took this for a run today, which strangely worked. I also have this as a physical possession. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ Vibe★★★★☆ (7/10)

A jazz album was a pleasant surprise today. Its a genre I don't listen to often but when I do I always say to myself that I need to do it more. This album in particular was good with a heavy focus on saxophone, logical considering its a Coltrane album, with some really good drums in the back and some piano shining through once in a while. In the ten minute song the saxophone went maybe a little to wild though with some notes I don't think the saxophone was even build for. I enjoyed the experience as a whole and it made me want more jazz in my life.

I do love this album and listen to it at least a few times a year. But is it perfect? It is no. I’ve criticized other albums for endless freestyle noodling and there are moments when here when I wish drum solos would just end already.

Hard not to dig this one

Dang, this is so good so far! This is the best instrumental I've got. I enjoyed it more than I thought.

Of course one of the great jazz legends. Not so great as giant steps or blue train though.

Finally, some bona fide jazz! I’ve been waiting for the Generator to give me something in this vein and a John Coltrane album was honestly the perfect place to start. A Love Supreme isn’t unlike a tasty sandwich – it’s got good bread as the first and last thing you taste, but the real flavor comes from what’s packed into the middle. "Acknowledgment" and "Psalm" are good jazz, but "Resolution" and "Pursuance" (particularly the former) really steal the show here with Coltrane’s sharp, killer saxophone melodies and the rhythm section’s tense, fast-paced grooves. I went into ALS crossing my fingers for a five because jazz is a genre I have so much admiration for and I’ve heard so many good things about this album in particular, but I unfortunately can’t ignore the noticeable dip in quality between the middle and outer tracks. Even "Pursuance" doesn’t quite reach perfection, as it ends with a baffling three-minute bass solo from Jimmy Garrison, which (despite some amazing performances from him on the rest of the album) comes across more like chord noodling and scales practice than something truly inspired, bringing my enjoyment of it down ever so slightly. A Love Supreme is solid four star album, largely because it’s built around what could very well be one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time ("Resolution") and stays on its feet pretty well during its other 25 minutes thanks to its solid writing and instrumental chemistry. Will most certainly be coming back to this one! Highlights: Resolution, Pursuance

jazz really isn't my sort of thing but i thought it was great

79/1001 :: John Coltrane - A Love Supreme Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ✅ Rating: 9 Listen before you die: Yes As far as jazz records go I don’t know if it gets better than this. And of all the jazz records I’ve heard in this project this was the most exciting. Power, rhythm, freedom, it’s all there. I will be returning.

Fabulous jazz classic. Probably not for people who aren't already into jazz. It is almost ecstatic and impressionistic at times. Going off into near pure emotion. Masterful artists walking the very edge of spinning out of control.

Having the sex record. Supremes style, hell yeah, dude!

Really pleasant old-school jazz. It's short, though, at only 32 minutes.

8.5/10

I just like how peaceful saxophones are. 4 stars

Lækkert

God cykleplade! Virkelig fedt kontrolleret kaos, det sidste nummer er helt fantastisk.

I like jazz and this is classic jazz. Top tracks: Part II and III (particularly drum bit)

as a non ball knower about Jazz, this is lovely. Furious and frenetic, paced to within an inch of its life. It's four dynamos at the top of their game.

Good. Easier to listen to than some of his contemporary genre mates. Some catchy melodies at times.

Favorites: Pt. I - Acknowledgement Pt. II - Resolution Pt. III - Pursuance (drum solo intro, piano part, ending bass back and forth) Pt. IV - Psalm (slow and epic) Meditative, yet entertaining.

I've been listening to Part IV - Psalm on repeat, and I'm certain that Mos Def / Yasiin Bey took the saxophone riffs and incorporated them into the vocals on "Rock N Roll" off of Black on Both Sides – a song which name checks Coltrane. Anyway, I'm not a jazz head but figuring out (trying to figure out) what this piece of work meant to other musicians is one way to measure. How do you figure out jazz beyond how it feels?

Not a jazz fan but even I get this one.

I like jazz. Love Coltrane, but I know that there is so much happening in the music that I am not fully comprehending. At times it sounds like random notes, but I believe they all have meaning and are purposeful. I need to sit with some jazz aficionado to unlock the decoder ring. Sure it’s up to the listeners interpretation, but I need to know what to listen for.

I don't know shit about Jazz but I enjoyed it.

This was a great album. I listened to it while I read up on Finnish Sauna Design esentials, and it was just a nice ambient album to listen to.

Even if nott genre, it made me reflext on my life raw, on a square park bench, in my tuscan city centre. Even brought me to tears near the end, seeing the leaves wobbling, the people walking. Maybe just a bit too technical for my ears, sadly.

Acompañamiento agradable para el trabajo, pero mi opinión sobre el jazz sigue siendo que se debe disfrutar en un club, fumando y bebiendo.

Supreme supreme

20/08/25 4/5 perfect introduction to jazz

This is why a lot of people say they "hate" Jazz. Confusing, tuneless, random sounding... But if you like Jazz, or even put up with it now and then, you recognize why Jazz elitists put this album at or near the top of all-time bests. It breaks every tradition while maintaining some elements. It's an intense listening experience, not casual. If you can bring yourself to really pay attention, an entirely new world of mood and feeling comes to light. Technically, the musicians are Jazz GOATs. Elvin Jones is especially incredible here, I can here some proto-Bonham during Jones' solo in "Pursuance." McCoy Tyner is also amazing, and the whole rhythm section has that magical thing that "just happens," a peak experience. Rare genius. Then there's all of Coltrane's mysticism, which comes through in his playing. It is free, as in unconstrained. The Apple music review describes it as "an evocative play between tempo and non-tempo." A massive work of self-expression. Definitely analogous to post-modern visual art: non-linear, creates its own rules, unstructured. This is powerful music. I can't imagine how this was created, and I've tried many times. Like Keith Jarret's live album, it's not something to listen to casually, it takes a few listens and an open mind to "get it." It's worth the effort though.

4.1/he's damn good

nada que decir only bangers

Great jazz album good drums

Supremely cool but difficult.

This is #day372 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… all that jazz, right? Well, maybe not "that" jazz. This kind is hard to pigeonhole, unless you call it "avant-garde" or "free jazz," which is already a form of pigeonholing. I guess that's how we are: always trying to explain things. I don't know if I can describe A Love Supreme versely enough. But I like the way it makes me feel. Like, I know this is the kind of jazz I'm after: loose, chaotic, yet somehow precise. Isn't that what jazz is after all? It feels like a narrative, a free verse, spoken entirely through instruments. Some call it spiritual. And I think they're onto something. Maybe I'm biased because this is the kind of record you're supposed to admire... But to hell with it, this is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day373.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. You can hear his talent.

Exciting edgy brass

A singular listening experience, even for someone who doesn't love saxophone.

Jazz that is smooth and keeps you invested throughout the whole album. Every song feels very impactful and leaving an impression on you.

Very solid, experimental yet accessible, 7/10

Another amazing jazz album! Saxophone was next level!

A LOVE SUPREME A LOVE SUPREME A LOVE SUPREME I'm not a good judge of jazz, but this was enjoyable. 4*

Liked it a lot; but still learning how to interpret jazz as a whole.

I like this album but I don’t think I have the knowledge to appreciate what makes it so great. I enjoy it but I don’t think I understand it Fav tracks - All

Now I get it...

Very good. 4 stars.

Que álbum de jazz!!! Moondrop May

Before listening: I truly enjoy Coltrane, but I admit that I can’t tell one jazz saxophonist from another. It’s part of the reason that I’m doing the list. Can I develop the ability to distinguish one saxophonist from another? One piano player from another? An so on and so forth. Good liner notes- learning that Coltrane created this article in order to give thanks to God really changes the understanding of this album Part 1– Acknowledgement- it opens with a longing, wailing note as if pleading for understanding, it closes with a slow chant of “A Love Supreme” Part 2- Resolution- I won’t admit to knowing enough about jazz to differentiate between songs, but the transitions and the feel on these albums are noticeable if you sit down and listen Part 3- Pursuance/Part 4- Psalm I have heard all the songs on this album- sometimes as part of a randomized Spotify playlist, sometimes as background music while teaching. Listening to it straight through in the car is something completely different. It really is an experience, with four distinct tracks that flow into each other- the best rock equivalent is Dark Side of the Moon. I highly recommend WBGO’s extensive writing about John Coltrane. https://www.wbgo.org/music/2019-09-23/deep-dive-the-presence-of-the-past-in-john-coltranes-expressive-and-searching-music

Favorite Song: Pursuance Such a great jazz album with super impressive drum and sax solos. I love jazz, but for me it usually fades to background music. This had my full attention for its entire runtime! [4 Stars]

Jazz might be the most consistently great genre of this list of albums.

Jazz isn’t my favorite but it was pretty good.

Part 2 was great

I really enjoyed the music but don't think I would return to it

I continually forget how good this album is. Every time I re-listen, it blows me away. I remembered the part where he repeated the title of the album over and over. Love that part. I was pleasantly reminded of how amazing the drums are. Looking forward to my next listen. 4/5

Not a jazz guy but obviously a classic

Already knew this one. Solid. Worst Song: Part III Best Song: Part I Added to Liked Songs: All four were already liked

It's a jazz classic, very cohesive and the performances are excellent. Coltrane on the saxophone is amazing, his improvisation is top tier and he manages to make the sax sound so alive. "Psalm" is the standout in this sense, his "recitation" is so interesting. Aside from that, "Resolution" is great, I loved the main motif. Overall, it's a pretty influential jazz record and the quality of the performances by Coltrane and company both justify its presence in the list and its status as a classic.

This is 4 guys jerking themselves off onstage for 31 minutes and that description just about describes my favorite and least favorite parts of the album.

Both confusing and catchy. Want to dance to it but really can't. Would listen again.

Whoa! Awesome freestyle jazz. Bohnam studied part iii before he made Moby dick I would have to believe.

Loved the drums in this one!

Not bad but for me it is a little much too art for art's sake. My first full album jazz experience by the way.

I don't normally care for instrumentals, but this feels different. I has so much heart and emotion thanks to the jazzy and moody nature. I'll start to get used to the piano solos, or the bass, and then right when I'm ready for a change, that sax comes in and wakes up the whole song. Loved it.

Not a huge fan of this sort of intentionally disorganized sounding jazz. Obviously very talented musicians, but much of it is lost on me. I enjoyed it but it gave me anxiety.

Impressive on the playing side and very unique in it's harmonic moods. I'm more into Blue Train, Giant Steps and My Favorite Things. "How Deep is the Ocean?" maybe being one of my favorite jazz songs ever. I have heard this is one of the hardest albums of his to get or it takes a lot of jazz listening but I'm sure this is the definition of a "grower" album

ya like jazz? edit: ok, I listened to this a few more times, and can definitely say that jazz grows on you. 7.5/10

I loved this, very glad I got to listen to this today.

I felt something.

A super iconic and monumental Jazz album. While I have found myself enjoying a lot of jazz on this list, I don't consider myself a super jazz fan. More a genre I have appreciated from afar. While I did enjoy this, not as much as say a Miles Davis album. 7/10

About as classic as it gets.

Heavy heavy jazz shit man. I need to be in a dimly lit smokey room when listening to this. So much smoke that the guys up on stage can't see each other and just trip off on their own sweet way. Then some dame breezes past the stage, the smoke wafts clear for a second, and the guys can see each other just long enough to get back on track. The best thing about being a jazz musician must be that you can just turn up at a gig and play any old notes without the hassle of rehearsing or even knowing who else is playing with you (and when I say 'rehearsing' I don't mean that they don't practice - cos these guys definitely know their shit) Enjoyed it. Now where's my double bass and fags. Just as a postscript; through the fug I'm sure I can see 4 guys up on that stage. The other 3 doing most of the heavy lifting. Maybe "The John Coltrane Quartet" would have been a more fitting title?

It's a technical masterpiece. With every listen, a new detail is heard, a new story discovered. This record is like an empty canvas that each performer contributes to and builds off of. Each performer has their chance to shine, and each of them absolutely killed it. Feeling Coltrane pour an ounce of soul out into the first and last track was a highlight for me. The loss of his presence in Part III makes you yearn for it, and it feels so satisfying when he starts playing again. I didn't have any lowlights on this record. This record needs a couple of listens to get the ideas that they were going for here. Favourite Track(s): Part I - Acknowledgement, Part IV - Psalm Least Favourite Track(s): Part III - Pursuance

4,5/5 Just great stuff. Even better than Ballads, which I really, really enjoyed when I listened to it around 2 months back. "Pursuance / Psalm" kept me on the edge of my seat.

Listened to this while answering emails, perfect soundtrack for getting stuff done

I love Trane, and this might be my favorite of his.

Just great

now that's jazz, baby

“A Love Supreme” - John Coltrane

as every jazz album I lost interest at some point but this was the most enjoyable of all I’ve heard so far. appreciate not having those high pitched horns. if someday I find myself wanting to play jazz this is what I’ll go for but skipping the last song

john coltrane is so god damn cool. this album has been on my radar since my 'History of Jazz' class back in college. the opening track is just so memorable for me, and its freakin' awesome to listen to. it swings to smoothly from track to track, and I will forever dig it.

An excellent album to relax and listen to. Wonderful composition, I'm glad I had a reason to seek out John Coltrane and I hope we have more of his albums in the future.

it's shocking that this is my first time really listening to john coltrane! 10s across the board

I'm fighting the urge to give this album a 5 instead of a 4 because the justification would require some type of knowledge in jazz technicalities I do not possess. I couldn't tell you why this album sounds as good as it does, nor why the 'bad' parts that sound more grating are actually technical genius. I do, however think everyone should take the 30 odd minutes to listen to this incredible performance from what, I can only assume, was musicians at the top of their game.

liked songs: parts I-III Great album 4.25

Better than fries supreme

Rewarding repeated listens, what comes across initially as self-indulgent chaos reveals itself over time as a lyrical, emotionally rich, and vivid musical experience.

With this challenge I started to discover and love jazz 4/5

smooth

Fierce and spiritual, but felt more like a string of virtuosic solos than full songs. Not as cohesive as Miles or Herbie, but the piano, bass, and drums were absolutely elite.

I’ll give it the Acknowledgment it deserves. This is A Love Supreme.

VERY enjoyable. Working and cleaning the house.

I really enjoyed it...I don't think it's something I'll listen to everyday, but definitely saving it. The drumming is some of the best I can remember hearing. I've learned that I'm very particular with the jazz I enjoy listening to on any kind of regular basis.

I don't know what it is about jazz, but it's always such a delight to listen to 🥹 I never reach out for jazz for casual listening, but whenever I do come across it, I feel so damn happy🥺🥹 Album rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ray Charles into John Coltrane is a powerhouse of a double header. Not one to seek out jazz, but I appreciate it, really enjoyed this album, Coltrane's expertise is a joy to listen to

Smooth.

Jazz is my favorite genre. I loved this album. John Coltrane is sometimes a little too frenetic for me, but this album wasn’t over the top

Dang those are some good toot toots.

Thoroughly enjoyed the album. It's not a typical bebop or swing type jazz album but I enjoyed the journey it takes the listener on. Evoked a range of emotions for me. I could definitely see myself listening to the album on repeat in a dark room while reflecting on things with a nice glass of whiskey in hand. 4/5

I mean it's Coltrane I don't think I've ever heard anything by him that's bad. There are other albums I enjoy more, but this is a damn good album. It's the kind of album you want to listen to during a snow storm or raining day. It's perfect for that morning cup of coffee where you just don't want to start your day. It's a pick out a book and chill in your favorite chair or couch album.

Great talent working on this album with some truly impressive solos. Wish it was a little more cohesive for my taste but overall great stuff.

Nice and jazzie. Good for the vibes, but not something I want to listen to on the daily.

what else can you say?

It's good, but not for me

Listened a few time. I don’t totally get Jazz, but I want to.

Good Jazz, not my favorite of the classics but I can see why its Coltrane's masterpiece.

Brilliant album, nice on the 100th listen too.

Its Coltrane it has to be cool

Wow what a great album, I've found that I have a tolerance for jazz that I never knew I had and this was cool cause it's one of the most famous jazz albums of all time and it was very good!

Am I getting turned on to jazz? I don't know, but I enjoyed listening to this album so much that I played it twice, back-to-back... well, almost, because when TIdal kept on playing related tunes after the album ended the first time, I didn't even realise it had finished. When I awoke from my jazz inspired revery, I did play the album through a second time, and enjoyed it as much as the first. Now, was this because of the situation? I played it while pulling up weeds in my garden on the first truly balmy day of spring. Would I have enjoyed it as much if I'd laid back on the couch and focused on nothing else but the music? Again, I don't know... But I did like it. It's not exactly everday listening for me, but given that I have always thought I hated jazz, A Love Supreme has definitely got me questioning that particular assertion.

V. cool. One of those albums where you know that you aren't getting the whole story if you don't know all the facts behind it, but I'm glad I listened to it, and it's added to the library.

"En suveren kjærleik" av Jonatan Wilhelm Koltrein er aldeles flott jass. Jeg forstår ikke hvorfor så mange bokstavelig talt tilber dette albumet. Men kanskje jeg vil få en mer helhetlig verdsetting og forståelse av platen, samt annen jass, etter hvert i livet mitt.

I used to think I didn't like saxophone, but Coltrane just makes it sound so nice.

Great jazz album.

This kind of jazz is more my speed (well, as much as jazz can be) than the solo piano album. Coltrane is a legend, and this album is quintessential jazz. Listening to it, I feel like I'm transported to another time, another place.

Chillig

Amazing jazz record.

I would have liked more of this.

deliciously smooth

Great album

One of my favorite jazz albums I've heard, I felt like I understood it more on this one than others. I could feel why people love this type of music. Very good

I'm not going to pretend like I know the intricacies of Jazz or that I am musically minded whatsoever; but this rocks. Much like anything Miles Davis touches, this bleeds with quality and soul. Admittedly I prefer Jazz with /less/ saxophone than this, but it was still a great listen, and with a 30~ minute runtime, it definitely isn't a slog to get through by any means. I really enjoyed this album, and I really wanted to give this a 5, but I just can't. I don't see myself coming back to this in a huge rush, as good as it was. I didn't even add any of these songs into my Jazz playlist, which is telling. Definitely one of those albums I want to love, but struggle to. Still, awesome listen, and I recognise the importance of this record and John Coltrane as a whole.

A love supreme sounds like a shitty overpriced deal you would get from a local burger joint. Jazz is a pretty easy winner for me on this list and this album is no different. it's maybe a bit too eager on the piano but this was still an awesome listen

I own this one. Obviously a jazz classic.

Enjoyable. Will probably revisit. 4/5

Great jazz

An album for a lifetime and a very special kind of masterpiece. To be honest, I always preferred other Coltrane classics, like giant steps my favorite things and so, but you can't deny the atmosphere this album brings. It's always there to listen again

I’ve heard this album a couple of times before today, and always felt like it wasn’t really thing. But, I found myself listening to it on repeat today - it went from a 2/5 this morning, to a 3/5 in the afternoon, to a 4/5 in the evening. It definitely took me a few tries to appreciate it, but now I do.

fancyfancy, kind of have to rate this one more on respect than personal appreciation but it was pleasant

Always pleasant to listen to but it’s really just background music for me. Good to work to because I don’t get hung up on lyrics. But for me it is mostly in one ear and out the other. It’s great jazz no doubt but just not my favorite genre.

Bonne bioune. Belle cohérence. Comme une toile abstraite qui donne l'impression de pouvoir accéder à signification plus grande. 4 étoiles mais peut-être 5 à l'avenir quand j'aurai assez revisité.

Impassioned musicianship. Somehow I found the drumming most engaging?

nice n jazzy. i like the repercussion

Stressful. 30 minutes of being on cocaine.

I dont usually like jazz but this is pretty chill jazz

This may not be my preferred jazz, but it's hard to deny the intensity. I actually enjoy it quite a bit 9.3 ★★★★½

I was excited to get this one as, if I’m honest, I’ve never really given jazz a chance. What if it turns out I love it and didn’t know? Based on this, I probably won’t be buying a load of black polo necks and taking up smoking just yet, but I did enjoy it.

My father used to play this CD all the time. I'm honestly not sure I'm qualified to have a real opinion on it, but I like it a lot. Coltrane's style here is wildly emotive, almost desperate. Listen to his expression at about 3:50 on the first track - he obviously knows (and demonstrates repeatedly on this CD) how to get perfect sound out of the instrument - he's just doing that to convey raw emotion. He does similar at about 6:35 on the third track. There's a lot of guys with surgical precision on sax, those moments for me are what makes the difference with Coltrane, you can tell he really feels it. I like the piano player as well, listening to it again now especially, I hadn't realized how much he's featured. His solos on the 2nd and especially on the 3rd track are really very strong.

I’m not into jazz but he’s alright, seems passionate as he plays

This was really great. Part three went so hard it was really awesome. Even though this was only four songs at the beginning I was thinking that I appreciate jazz but I don’t understand the story they’re trying to convey but by part four I feel like I got the emotion and felt more connected to it. It’s a really great piece of art.

Do you like chill music or upbeat music? I don't really like or dislike this album because it is only instruments so I can't really tell. But, that doesn't mean its bad.

A gorgeous album, diving deep into the spiritual psyche of a musical genius. I definitely prefer my Coltrane to be freakier, but this is a landmark achievement in connecting technical prowess and complex musical ideas with sublime emotion. The gnostic theism expressed here is totally opposite to my own beliefs, but the way in which it is expressed is profound and touching as the music flows between modes, rhythms and textures with ethereal ease. The quartet is in fantastic form, with Tyner and Jones particularly effective in regulating the dynamics and mood of this suite across the record. The massive bass chords all over the album (especially at the end of Pursuance) then bring a real darkness into the sound. I miss the revolutionary energy of Giant Steps and the frenetic edge of Ascension, but this album is a different beast and testament to the breadth of Coltrane's brilliance. Favourite tracks: the whole thing, end-to-end

Jazz Master! I don’t listen to a lot of jazz but this was phenomenal - part 3 was my favourite.

I enjoy it. The instrumental sounds good.

Good shit

Hella jazzy.

This is good. I find jazz really cool when I'm calm and relax. It's harder to get into when I'm flustered or working. But given time, this album calmed me down while being flustered. I like the vocals coming in on part 1. And the drum solo and bass solo in part 3 were really cool!

Enjoyed that

Great but cannot listen to it for too long

well composed and easy to like
