Reviews (page 7 of 14)

There's a couple ways to go with the rating. If you understand jazz, I think you'd be nuts to go with anything other than a perfect 5. I don't think this could ever be a 1...everyone on here drips talent. So, it's odd, if you don't really understand jazz, I'm not sure you could give this a 5, and yet something like a 2, 3, or 4 seems kind of insulting. I'm not a huge jazz guy, so I'm going with a 3 + 0.75 for the exceptional talent, rounding to a 4. I hope one day I "get it". Tracks 1 and 3 are the shit though.

-wow this is such a phenomenal jazz masterpiece.. I’ve listened to it like twice before this and honestly I like it more every time -a lot of passion and spirituality went into this project obviously and you can really hear it! it’s so easy to lose yourself in the instrumentation. I’d give this a 4.5 with a lean toward 4 -Favorites are Part I - Acknowledgment and Part IV - Psalm

Don’t listen to jazz much, but that was impressive and very well done.

Really good! A jazz album I think everyone should listen to

01/01/25 I had no issues with this album. It was a calm and peaceful listen for my drive home.

Something special. It can be background music but it's the type that makes me stop and breathe and relax every so often.

i’ve never said anything bad about jazz, jazz is my friend 4.5

Those drums!!

A little slow to start and end, but was mostly great with lots of fun detours to complement the swingy brass and drums

I really like this, an experimental jazz album that remains accessible.

Great stuff! Coltrane, Tyner, Garrison and Jones kept my soul warm whilst out on a walk in the -18° Montreal winter. All four pieces were masterful but Psalm spoke to me the most. This absolutely deserves a repeat spin.

Tricky one. I want to believe there's a lot to *A Love Supreme*. I gave it a few listens. On one hand, it doesn't sound groudbreaking, the other tracks of John Coltrane I've heard resonated with me better. But then, I kinda start feeling the magic I'm supposed to. Sadly, only in one place so far. Hesitant 4/5.

Rolling stanza. The slow heat death of the universe. Experiments in rhyme. Flat intonation and discordant blasts of reverent haiku. Rasping and wheezing and trilling that’s closing and centring diphthongs. Phrases, sentences, wordless arguments (contradiction: “a love supreme”). Essays in mood that need something that can move beyond what words alone can do – impossible meta language. I listened to this album ten times and couldn’t find anything to grab a hold of. It’s the experience of an equilibrium. Something that could run forever and never repeat itself; or an angle in a fractal someone’s only likely to see in extremis. This record contains an infinity. Is an infinity.

As far as jazz goes, this is definitely jazz.

unforgiving story telling through jazz at its finest

Coltrane is amazing sometimes the free jazz is a little too much though. I really like this album, but it’s just on the border of being overly discordant for me. Still phenomenal though.

Made me want to go to New Orleans.

a love supreme... a love supreme... a love supreme...

hey man that's an okay jazz record. i will listen to it again probably, it actually got me going. - dude who dislikes jazz records as a personality trait

Top tier jazz album. However, i am not this type of jazz listener. The musicianship and expression is tremendous, but not what gets me excited for a full album.

a love: supreme. (⌐■_■)

🎷😎

Modal jazz that should be listened to at least once in your lifetime. Even if you don’t understand what is going on, as a musician, you will be better for it. Highly respected, but honestly not my favorite jazz album.

A supremely awesome jazz album

Just a solid jazz album from a master. I don't own this one, so it's my first listen. Don't ask me about why, I just dug it's sound overall.

I'm not a jazz guy, just not educated enough in music. But even I can tell this is top level musicianship.

I don't know anywhere near enough about jazz to articulate what I like and dislike about it, but I really like this. That's all you're getting 4.5 Highlights: Part 2, Part 1

This is fun! One of the better albums on this list – certainly one of the better jazz albums. There's a good balance between experimentation and radio-friendliness (or as radio-friendly as you can reasonably get with extended jazz tracks). The intense, complex, mostly drumless atmosphere on the fourth/final track Psalm is a huge standout and brings this album up from a 3-4 tossup to an easy 4-star pick. In fact, the whole album is kind of an "experience" that I wouldn't listen to very often, but that I'd keep on for the whole 33 minutes each time. Comparable to The Wall. The Jazz Wall? Coltrane's Enclosure? Davis's Dam? There's a real sense of plot and adventure, with points of tension and release – such as the intense yet lonely drum solos in Pursuance, or the playful bass breaks in Resolution. Coltrane's saxophone playing is consistently fantastic, though I would've liked to hear a greater variety of horns (or even different sax players/types of sax) showcased, particularly for close listening purposes. It's easy to lose focus on the music even when there's so much harmonic and rhythmic complexity to focus on. In fact, the complex melodic rhythms – first seen in the opening track, Acknowledgement – are a little hard to catch onto, and the drums don't make this task easier. There are definitely arguments for Acknowledgement being the weakest track here. Regardless, A Love Supreme is a huge musical feat, and easily deserves its spot on this list. Key tracks: Psalm

sounds great like the instrumentals. I highly recommend to jazz fans. 8.1/10

Some very enjoyable jazz. Gets a bit jangly occasionally and the chanting wasn't my favorite, but overall a big winner.

Eu gostei do album, bem energético. Bom para ouvir no trabalho, mas me deu um pouco de vontade de assistir um show de jazz.

Amazing! For the most part - the saxophone can get a little crazy sometimes, but in general, this is just great music with a great vibe

I had gotten this album during a personal jazz craze and had remanded it to second tier status for being too busy in comparison to albums like "Coltrane + Hartman" and "Lush Life". But coming back... it's good. It's working for me. I will be coming back for more.

Not everyone’s thing I can imagine, but definitely mine. Beautiful, loved it.

“It’s just one song” me “It always has been” John Coltrane, standing behind me wearing an astronaut suit holding a saxophone like a gun. 7/10

Pracht album!

This album stressed me out a bit and at the end I had the feeling that the sax was trying to give me a lecture. Well, it turns out that was the point. It's wild that music can give you its own interpretation without explicitly telling you. I was at a 3 for this, but I would revisit. Let's make it a:

Master of his craft!!! Saxophone >>>

Great Album

Oh yeah, that’s the stuff.

Veliki sam fan jazza generalno, ali modalni me nekad zna ispilat.

I tu krenu konfuzije i problemi. Vrlo dobar kick-off!

Jazz is awesome. Coltrane is awesome. 9.5/10

Excels on all levels.

Enjoyed this, especially the front half.

I like jazz. Very calming and chill, good for focusing at work or for background music on a date or while reading. No complaints but I also probably wouldn’t choose it just to blast in the car. Very impressed with the artists instrumental talent!

Really good chill saxophone jazz. A nice relaxing listen.

Chaotic, magical, masterful. Part 1 is my favorite.

Jazz Classics

Only jazz album I’ve heard that I didn’t want to skip through. Still didn’t love it, but 4 stars.

Jazz is awesome.

I found it pretty easy to get into a groove and just vibe my way through the album, on my first listen through the double bass really stood out. First album i'll probably return to and listen through again to see if i get different results.

Ambling but a great vibe

Very very nice

I like it; I'm just not completely sure this sort of Jazz is for me! Appreciate the musicianship. I keep coming back to this, so I think I'll give this a generous 4.

Scrap every preconceived notion Miles Davis gave you about jazz because this is 10x better. I don’t understand the technicalities of jazz, but I do know that John Coltrane composed, performed, and recorded an album far more deep and complex than any I’ve personally heard. Project needle drop actually knows more about Coltrane’s background and why this album was conceived in the first place—it provides dimension you didn’t know you were looking for. Give him a ring if you’re looking for some enlightenment.

I like Coltrane, and this is a pretty good example of his work. Enjoyable.

jazzz feels like cowboy bebop

Pt. II - Resolution is my favorite piece in a strong four-piece. The bass solo of Pt. III - Pursuance at around the 8 minute mark is incredible. Listening quality drops off the moment I get up. Next album I keep my eyes closed. Sit. Lay down. Eyes closed.

Very chill

I had just had someone mention Coltrane and then got this album to listen to. Reminded me of the jazz bed the DJ played at my wedding reception during the dinner. Easy to chill out to!

An interesting mix between frantic and and calming jazz. Outside of the track titles, I don't really hear or see this religious subtext that many critics seem to mention, but I do hear Coltrane essentially sing or narrate through his saxophone. This is mostly evident in the final movement, "Psalm", which takes a more gospel or soul-like approach in its mood. This list has given me an opportunity to expose myself more to jazz, with some being seminal works, and others more mixed in public opinion. I'm not sure I'd quite put this on "Kind of Blue" level, but it's still grandiose in its own right.

4.1/5 listened 3x

I have a son who loves jazz who tells me this is one of the all-time great albums. I once saw a documentary about a group of people on California who have created an entire religion based on this album. Personally, I don’t have a feel for jazz. But I will say that this one doesn’t annoy me like many jazz albums do. I can hear it, know it’s good and even enjoy parts of it a little bit. Personally it’s probably a three for me but I’m going to bump it up in honor of my boy.

I love Coltrane & I really enjoyed this album, but I have to admit I'm more a fan of Giant Steps & Blue Train. It can take a lot of concentration to follow free jazz.

2024-07-27...

It always comes to Jazz

I could feel the love.

Part I - Acknowledgement.

Bien. Sin más.

Noteworthy jazz album by a phenomenal artist.

This was a very cool, jazzy album to put on in the background while I worked. The musicianship was clearly top notch and it was very listenable and groovy. Four stars.

Delicious

Straight jazz, communicative and expressive. Long songs but you’re listening to conversations between some greats. 3.6

One of the most famous jazz albums. The skill of Coltrane is mind blowing. Personally I'm more of a Miles Davis person, but this is still one amazing album. 4/5

Wasn’t bad for a jazz album. Don’t really know what to listen for in this genre. I know he is one of the great though!

Lovely bubbly

In light of my existential musing yesterday in regards to approaching the 1001 Albums to Hear Before You Die, I took the advice of a reviewer from RYM and actually listened to 5 John Coltrane albums chronologically (I think) back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back over the course of a few hours. They were, in order, Blue Train, Giant Steps, Africa/Brass, Impressions, and A Love Supreme. Below are a mixture of me noting musical highlights and me providing actual musical review where I feel I can offer it. This was a lot of fun and while I won’t do it for every artist I’m glad I did with Coltrane (and probably should have done it with Davis earlier. Maybe I will when Kind of Blue shows up). Jazz has always been a mountain to climb in my eyes. It never made sense to be flown up to the summit only to walk down. Blue Train - the drumming switch-ups throughout the title track. the main melody of moment's notice. the understated keys on locomotion (and the song sounds like a moving train). im old fashioned gives me the same wistful vibes as (and possibly has melodic similiarties to) that song from Wall-E and i love the piano solo. lazy bird sounds anything but, chirping along at what felt like the most blistering pace on the record. loved the two short bass/drum solos, especially how the bass was played with a bow. overall 5 excellent tracks, i enjoyed just about every minute. maybe a little too light and "dinner party" but thats something that keeps it from greatness rather than something that drags it down if that makes sense. Giant Steps - forgive me for a pun but: i hope a giant cant step at the pace this album goes at! the title tracks tempo gets my heart racing and there's no reprieve from the mania until spiral. this is a foot-tapper of an album if there ever was one. when it slows down on spiral it is only relative to the blistering first 3 tracks. i think coltrane's melodies on spiral are amongst my favorite from him so far. love the playful call-and-response at the end of syeeda's song flute. love how the mournful piano is given its moment on naima. love that we get to torture the metronome once more for the finale. that scale or whatever trane plays to open mr pc rocks. the drums in the last two minutes rock. the piano rocks. mr pc has got to be my favorite coltrane song so far, it's astounding. i think i got sweaty just listening to this album. Africa/Brass – This new quartet is a giant step in the quality of Coltrane’s band mates (sorry). the production on the drum solo in Africa blows my mind. the whole track does honestly. the atmosphere is cinematic, the musicians are actors, and the composition is a script. tones are set, a story is told, the players play, and Coltrane provides the pyrotechnics. Apparently Greensleeves is a well-known folk song but I don’t know a thing about that. For me, Greensleeves is (are?) bombastic, spacious drums and a sax that flows between notes like a seal in the ocean, with an anxious touch of the foreboding Great White in the murk. The accompanying brass of Blues Minor bolsters the song into something grand. I'm really not sure if it's intentional but Coltrane being mostly in my left ear and Jones' drums being in my right gives a this track the feel of a duet. Immersion - I somehow serendipitously had this queued up for my drive home from work which reinforces it as my least favorite of the 5 albums. It centers on two tracks, India and Impressions, that contain the most off-putting sax tone of what I listened to today. After the Rain was beautiful though and it blended it A Love Supreme very well. A Love Supreme - This one has got to be the best full-band effort of the 5. Each member has a chance to shine (Coltrane the most of course) and the repeated motifs here are rock solid. I've kind of run out of steam at the end of these reviews but I do think I appreciate this album more after hearing the first 4 than before when I listened to it in isolation. I let Blue Train run for a bit afterwards and you absolutely hear the difference 8 years made in Coltrane's music. I think Giant Step and Africa/Brass had higher highs, and especially Africa/Bass made me feel the most, but A Love Supreme sounds the most complete by far. All 4 (3?) tracks are completely equal in quality, mood, and musicianship. I think I'll still take In A Silent Way over this but it is much closer than it used to be. I look forward to continuing to explore.

This one was quite engaging, even for a non-jazz listener like myself. I loved the drum, sax and bass combos throughout the album. It finished very strongly and made me recognise the appeal of jazz music. I can definitely understand its significance and influence in the genre.

Strident jazz, I love it.

Really solid jazz album. A classic that that I remember playing with friend in college. It's always pleasant and interesting. Every time I listen, I notice more. I will definitely keep this on rotation.

This was good. I listened at the end of the day and it was a great way to unwind.

4.5 absolutely beautiful puts you in a otherworldly state of mind

4 - I'm not sure my brain was in the right place for this, want to revisit. Onto the next album

If you like this kind of jazz music, it is truly an amazing album. Good stuff, Mr Coltrane

pure jazz. goes off road only to weave its way back. Inspiring, visual and captivating.

Good album, I enjoy coltrane

Jazzy, me licky

A phenomenal jazz record. This one is generally known as the best of all time, but if i’m being honest I enjoy some of Coltrane’s other projects more than this one

4.5 stars. Even though I’m not a jazz enthusiast I really enjoyed this and will continue to come back to it.

As someone that only got into jazz recently, "A Love Supreme" was recommended to me just a couple months ago, and I listened to it then for the first time. The only part I don't like is the one time there is speaking, someone saying "A Love Supreme" over and over, but, overall, I really love the album, and I'm honestly surprised at how short it is, but it doesn't outstay its welcome.

Loved it!

Better than expected

4.5 I haven't listened to a ton of true jazz. I like listening to it, but I don't think I get it. I saw a review that said "any perceived deficiency is probably due to my lack of context/knowledge". That hit the nail right on the head for me. I enjoyed listening to this whole thing but I lost the through line at points leaving it feeling a little disjointed. I am curious to listen to more jazz and revisit this.

Bien. Sin más.

One of my favourite Sunday morning jazz records

Good stuff. I pretty much only know Giant Steps by Coltrane, but I like this just as much as Giant Steps.

Like this a lot more than most older jazz. It's pretty great.

Jazz.

Classic album

I liked it much more than the Dave Brubeck album

Had never listened to thus album before, and enjoyed the experience--found it very relaxing by the third time listening to it.

While really good, I must admit this jazz didn't feel quite as interesting or experimental comapared to other things I have listened to. Maybe I just need to listen to it in a different setting or something. But I still really enjoyed it on the whole.

I was not "in the mood" for a Jazz album today. And, I will level with you where some may not: this lack of "feeling a certain genre or quality of music" on any given day can wreak havoc with ratings and reviews. Acknowledging this bias is an important step in listening to and providing capsule ratings/reviews in good faith on 1001 albums before you die. I had this album on earlier and it didn't particularly register well, but it's a record I own and one that I know delivers something special with a little bit of devotion to it. Second time around, having settle in to listening to it louder and with more focus, Acknowledgement sets the stage sneakily, but nicely with a payoff that I am able to appreciate even on an off day.

It was quite nice, my first proper Jazz listen. Reminded of 2010s Tom and Jerry. Had a nice, calm vibe. Definitely will give another listen.

A nice jazz album. Probably a relisten sometime later :)

Fun listen, I liked track 4 the best. I liked the sax, bass, piano, I thought the drums could have been more varied but they did serve their part of constantly keeping the background upbeat.

I found the drums a little distracting at times, and I didn’t like the brief vocalization.

I understand this is a brilliant album but I don’t have the vocabulary to explain why.

pretty cool but im too stupid to really appreciate jazz. strong 7/10

This was the least approachable jazz I've listened to. I really wanted to love it as I know Coltrane by reputation, but I did not.

A little too rough for jazz. I guess you call it that...just makes me a little frustrated. But he is a legend none the less.

I used to listen to jazz more and I loved John Coltrane. This was a very pleasant listen.

Ya like jazz? Well I do. And Coltrane is one of the best! A really solid EP/album with some great solo instrumental segments. A lot of fun to listen to with a good pair of headphones. Fav tracks: Pt. II - Resolution, Pt. III - Pursuance

Perfect for a Sunday! Great timing…

Great songs. Sometimes gets a bit outside

Good jazz

A more energetic jazz than Miles Davis. A good time.

Considered Coltrane's supreme achievement, the album speaks to God and doesn't last too long. Although I'd heard it before, I listened to the entire thing while out-n-about looking for my wallet; fittingly, once I found the wallet, traveled home, and pulled into my driveway, the album ended with a heavenly sense of bliss and unconditional closure.

Very good album, a classic.

Great jazz. One of the best.

An actually enjoyable Jazz album. Still don't think I understand the genre at all but this was a lot better then the Miles Davis album we got. There is a lot more focus on the drums here and although not a fan of brass some of it is actually really good. I just don't understand why it has to be so chaotic. There would be moments that I was really getting into and then suddenly some other random noise is in the mix and just switches everything up. Although I enjoyed it I still need to know what makes people love it. That being said I did really like this and it could really be something I would chuck on every now and then especially when I don't want to listen to any vocals. Was stuck between a 3 or a 4 but since this is the best I have heard of the genre and therefor quite re-playable I'll give it a 4. Still not a Jazz geek and would not like to be one. Part 2 was particularly nice to me so that can be the Stand Out Moment

Very good. My kinda jazz

Very good

Good jazz vibes, but short

resolution pursuance psalm

Yes, it is supreme!

Rising and euphoric. A state of constant elevation and motion.

Favourite song - Psalm

Felt like a brain massage.

Guy who has only listened to jazz music from Soul: “getting a lot of Soul vibes from this”

Alfa jazz 4.5

jazzy in the truest sense. often chaotic

Very funky. Kinda like it

Expertly played. Think it hits the peak with "Part 3", where the frantic energy is contagious. Favorite tracks: "Part 3: Pursuance"

Jazzy!

Classic Coltrane - great smooth jazz

One of the best Jazz Albums ever.

Album # 41 Jazz makes for great background music while I am working or in the car when life has become too much. Good album, short and sweet.

Yeowwww. These cats are cookin' *snaps fingers repeatedly*

Like it

Don't love but don't hate Jazz

Not my favorite Coltrane, still great.

I like Jazz, but I’m definitely not an expert. I can tell it’s technically impressive, but it didn't really speak to my soul.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I feel about jazz overall. I love Mingus, but there is a lot I can't tolerate. This is somewhere in the middle. I can appreciate it, and I probably would listen to it again, but I don't know how it makes me feel. Maybe that just makes me stupid. Maybe jazz is supposed to be confusing. Ok, by the end of this record I am really coming around to it.

Very nice Jazz!

I get it. It is a wonderful album for what it is and Coltrane is a master. That's why I give it a 4 star rating, even though jazz is not my jam. I get it.

Loved it, sophisticated morning vibes

I liked it, I'm not a huge jazz person but I thought it was impactful and full.

Good Sunday morning jazz. 4/5

First time listening to a Coltrane album. Although there’s some amazing playing going on here it gets tedious after 20 minutes.

it is moving.

This album is like organized chaos. My instinct with jazz is to throw it on as background music, but there's an urgency and franticness to this album that forces you to pay attention. Coltrane at times is wailing via saxophone. He has the lung capacity and vigor of an elite athlete. There's some real spirituality to this thing too. "Psalm" is an actual psalm. A Love Supreme is complicated and layered - I don't think you can get everything out of it that Coltrane intended in just a single listen or even multiple listens over the course of a day. I've enjoyed digging into it.

Jazz, sax., improv., 1965 -> 4

It’s jazz baby. Would give it a 5 but I can’t just give every jazz album a 5, and there were parts here that got a little too chaotic 4.5

Half an hour of improvisation. Great musicianship, but for not jazz lovers quite hard to understand. A mood thing and you have to be fully concentrated to appreciate it.

Jazz correcto. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

Bien. Sin más.

*previously listened to* A fully realized album that sees chaos erupt into peace and the cycle continuing until on the strained poem of Coltrane's sax is left. From the opening moments of the double bass riff to the very end, this is a captivating album. Jazz sometimes gets bemoaned as one of two things: background music or a caterwauling of notes. While A Love Supreme veers into the latter of those descriptions, it displays a deft hand at placing everything in just its right place. It's centered and exact while also feeling transcendent and spiritual.

A Love Supreme, A Love Supreme, A Love Supreme Best Song: A Love Supreme Worst Song: A Love Supreme PS: A Love Supreme PSPS: Walking around in New York to this album was a great experience, would recommend

I mean I'm on this project with someone who introduced me to Coltrane :)

Good jazz!

Beautiful music, although I feel it can't be appreciated on an album. I would love to hear it live to appreciate the interplay between instruments. Also think I don't have the discipline to give this music the attention it needs.

I know it’s a classic, but it’s never really got to me like some of his other stuff

This is a great album, classic jazz. It’s a little bit noisy for me to give it 5 stars but out worth 4 or 4.5. Coltrane is one of my favorite jazz greats.

It's fun. A little all over the place in a nice way. Will I listen to again: 75%

Enjoyable. I won’t pretend to fully understand what’s all going on in this album, but it held my attention and I was curious what would happen next.

I think the drumming sold this for me. Or maybe the piano. Or the bass. Or, you know what. John Coltrane put together a really great ensemble and recorded a really cool album. I have a complicated relationship with jazz. Especially the Miles Davis/John Coltrane end of the spectrum. But this was really great.

Solid jazz album

1. 4.3 2. 4.5 3. 4.4 4. 4.7

Impressive, but not my cup of tea.

I liked this but wanted a little more out of it.

A jazz legend. Enough said!

I know the reputation this album has, and as such, I feel somehow wrong for giving it a less than perfect score. But this is meant to be a subjective review, and personally, I don't think I found this to be as transcendental an experience as I was lead to believe. I haven't quite fully grown into jazz yet, and to my untrained ear, a lot of the playing here sounded dissonant and out of sync with their fellow musicians. While it was interesting at points, nothing about it struck me as being the masterpiece it is hailed as. I believe I do owe this one a few more listens.

Love Coltrane.

Solid, relaxing vibes. A great wind down after a tough day.

I'm just a casual jazz fan, but I regularly listen to jazz as background noise while doing something else. I found this album to be powerful enough to pull my focus back onto the music even was I was doing something else. I'll definitely add this album into my rotation.

Album #2: John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme A Love Supreme - Acknowledgement - Resolution - Pursuance - Psalm The lungs on the sax player holy hell Love how the instruments play off one another and play against each other. Songs that make me think of love and adoration, being in awe of something or someone. Based on my taste in music: 3.9/5 Pretending to be a music critic: 4.5/5

banger

Love it. And Coltrane such a force.

Loved it. So smooth. And Coltrane was such a force.

I like it. Great musicianship. A little too frenetic for the morning but would be great for when I’m cleaning the house or cooking.

Was aware of John Coltrane and the A Love Supreme album due to my time working at Tower Records for 10 years, but this was my first listen. I liked the solos of each instrument and how the individual songs were just that - independent - but somehow blended together. I rate this a 4 out of 5.

Nice and smooth, great background music,

Nice but a bit inaccessible

very good

John Coltrane is a beast on this record. He really makes you feel what he's feeling through just the use of his Saxophone. Solid Jazz record and would recommend to anyone looking to get into jazz

COLTRANE

Great Jazz!

An album that starts a bit weak but improves. Part 2, 3 and 4 are strong. Would be fun to hear a modern recording of this one. Grade: 4/5

this is either total noise or some of the best music I've ever heard, it's like right at the edge for me

Coltrane is a genius. I deduct 1 star merely based on my subjective taste. It's too cerebral for me, personally.

Amazing. Absolutely loved it. Also left me with a killer autoplay list afterwards!

listened to again new year, same Coltrane brilliance

Used to play jazz drums in high school, this took me way back.

If you don't like Jazz, then you won't like this. Luckily, I love Jazz.

As spiritual as jazz gets. Not as astounding as people say it is but it’s one of the most important jazz records

Jazz pur.

I'm not much for jazz, but his skill cannot be denied.

Jazz! Fun stuff 3.5/5

I liked it

Very interesting and enjoyable.

It has good moments and bad moments (especially when everything is out of any rythm). I think I would enjoy it more in other circumstances.

This was excellent to have on in the background while I was working. I'm appreciating jazz more and more as it comes up in this list.

You can't go wrong with some Coltrane. Great listen.

It's coltraine so it's very good, it's just a little short, I was a little disappointed when it ended. Not disappointed in the music just the fact that it didn't keep going. To me there are better coltraine albums although id be surprised if those were not also on the list

Beautiful chaos

I enjoyed it, couldn't tell you anything about it but was an enjoyable listen in the background.

ive listened to this at least 100 times. whats 1 more

Jazzy as fuuuuuuck. Loved the horns. Enjoyed the lack of vocals in tracks. I think I liked Pt II the most.

I've come to grips with the fact I'm never going to be a jazz guy. But this was really solid. Coltrane is famous for a reason, the sax runs are just phenomenal. Great album.

Great jazz album. Heard it too much

Good cool jazz

Beautiful, but I feel like there's something I'm missing. Maybe that's just a bad way to feel about music in general, it doesn't have to be a puzzle to solve. Habit, I guess

I don't listen to much jazz but this was a really good album and was nice and relaxing to listen to. It also gave me good similar suggests afterwards on Spotify autoplay so was doubly happy to have listened to it.

I know the reputation, but it just doesn't totally do it for me. Too avant garde

Good album overall, long but that's Coltrane babey

I probably did too much reading on this one while I was listening to it to write an unbiased review. I guess Coltrane had a whole religious awakening around this time, kicked his drug habit cold turkey, and then took his music up a notch. Good for him. This is generally considered to be a masterpiece and seems to be one of the more famous jazz albums. I am in no way qualified to rate jazz albums, but here goes nothing. I think I like it, and I'm not sure that I can articulate why. It's just a little fast paced and chaotic to keep it interesting. The songs are titled "Acknowledgement', "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm", and I think the idea is that this more or less traces his religious awakening. I didn't quite get it on the first two tracks (it felt a little generic to me), but it does start to come together a bit on the second two. The pace on "Pursuance" is rapid and feels almost desperate (right from the drums at the beginning), and then it all kind of unwinds and hits its peak at the end of that song and then on "Psalm". It's really good, and probably great. I like jazz but I struggle to rate it against other genres since it almost feels like it's own thing to me. I'm giving it a 4, maybe it should be a 5, who's to say really. Favorite song: A Love Supreme, Pt. III - Pursuance Other: A Love Supreme, Pt. IV - Psalm 11/6/23

it's ok but there are no hits. not as good as that bieber. he realy needs to lern how to write some lyrics too. not very catcy no hits

That's actually one of the better jazz albums on this list so far, and definitely one that is much more approachable for a common folk, like me, than Thelonius Monk or Miles Davis. Great beats, some surprising elements, like A Love Supreme chant, and obviously great saxophone to round it all out. It's a positive surprise.

i didn't expect that it's a jazz album, which i haven't listened too much before. It's amazing, but it's a little difficult for me to enjoy. I'll try to listen jazz more.

Not as readily accessible as other famous albums, but classic. 3.8

You like jazz? Cause I think I kinda do

A classic!

Soothing

Exceptionally impressive playing. Again maybe just that little bit cacophonous for my jazz tastes currently up until the last track, but it's taste not quality. Three and a half. Fave track: A Love Supreme, Pt. 4 - Psalm

Sensacional. Adoro a sobriedade, a nobreza, a sensualidade.

Rhythm is not my taste, but very skillful

The best jazz album I've gotten so far. The album seems to symbolize religious struggle and resolution without almost any words. While it's not entirely for me, I completely understand the importance of this album. Best Songs: NA Worst Songs: NA

Yep, this is jazz. Heavy use of stereo effects. Incredible drum work, piano feels nervous

Need more blues

A tad too chaotic for my taste but some of those rounds gave me goosebumps.

Nochmal anhören bei entspannten Abend

Great album!

I like it

How can you even review jazz?

good jazz

Amazing

This album is a incredible piece of work. Through just a piano, a drum set, and a saxophone it tells a deep story about Coltrane and his relationship with god. This would definitely be a 4.5 if I could rate it as such, but sadly it has to settle for a 4.

Nifty little album. Not really into jazz, but it has a nice groove to it that I appreciate. Really good!

Really solid Jazz album.

Very very good, great energy, have to listen to it again

It was very smooth and mellow good romantic or dinner music...

Great album

First introduction to jazz other than Damien Chazelle. Love how every instrument plays like it’s the focus. Nothing is filler or background, everything is changing and evolving and important. I love it when I find that in music, and to my knowledge, that is what jazz is all about, so I might have to listen to some more. Also I love the drums. My favourite song was probably part II.

Peak improvisational jazz from the early 60s. Quartet.

Intense jazz album, amazing talent

They broke all the rules and it still goes absolutely ballistic 4/5

A real connoisseur would probably know how to analyze and articulate the perfect review for this album to explain why it is a 5/5. But I am not, so all I can say is this album is dope and I love the way the album is constructed to have 4 parts and each with its own theme. I know Coltrane is one of Jazz greatest legends, but I probably won't listen to this again in the near term.

Extremely well crafted jazz with a slight tendency to get on the nerves.

Very refreshing after the dud I had before this one

So good, and it was done in a single take, which is a testament to the musicians. When in the mood for moving jazz, this is an excellent option.

decent listening music, incredibly weak 4 but its because I didnt want to give it a 3

Yeah it's great, but I am yet to fully understand why this is Coltrane album that always gets mentionned instead of his other, most adventurous work. Maybe it's a contextual thing, I don't know.

Always thought this one was a little overrated. Still think it is, but it doesn't stop it from being really great anyway!

Undoubtedly a jazz classic.

17.08.23. What a buzzy way to start, it’s 12.20am on a Thursday morning after a long day at work, and I’m lying in bed after hearing about this website on Reddit. I don’t really know anything about John Coltrane, and a phone speaker isn’t the best way to listen, but I don’t dislike it. Woah he just started singing. That’s cool.

Still most of the time feel too dumb for jazz, but Coltrane is the man and this created a lovely vibe in my living room. Would give again.

Pt. II - Resolution is an absolute masterpiece

One of the greatest examples of how music can be used to express raw emotions.

John Coltrane is a huge influence on the jazz scene, especially the more erratic jazz

Not for me

I need to be in the right mood to listen to an album like this but it's undoubtedly a masterpiece and was hugely influential.

my favourite jazz album of all time

I've been trying to listen to more jazz, this album is a treat. Another one for the regular playlist.

Never listened to John Coltrane and jazz can get a bit monotonous to me. I appreciate the talent even if I don't think I would listen to the album again.

Way better than I thought it would be. Do I like jazz???

They kinda get lost in the sauce during pursuance, but the rest is 10/10.

I don’t know this music at all, but really enjoyed it. The finish on the last song with the drums rolling behind the trumpet was really cool.

I have listened to Coltrane, but not this album. Most of the album I came to really like…being a short album, I had the chance to get a few listens in. The first track, in particular, captured my attention. There are some noodly jazz solos that I don’t jive with, but otherwise, I dig it.

I think I like the story behind this album more than the listening experience. I've read Ashley Kahn's book on this and I am confronted with an album I want to like more than I do - and I know I only like it as much as I do because of all the context I have for it - good luck to those of you without it.

pretty good

Music as meditation. The sort of thing that can keep playing all day and is only ever going to lift the mood. It's pot purri of scales, rythyms and free flowing jazz. Timeles.

I think this one will take more listens to fully appreciate. Wonderfully crafted solos but Coltrane’s tone has never been my favorite. Some pretty incredible playing on this record though.

Classic Jazz. If you THINK you don't like jazz, you should listen to this album. Jazz isn't for everyone all the time, but this album is a classic for a reason. Good background music if nothing else.

Great jazz album!

If you like jazz, you like this. I like jazz and I like this.

Very good

Jazzzzzy

So much better than some of his later work
