Not my fav Coltrane.

I'm surprised my headphones didn't catch on fire with how hard Mr. Coltrane was going during Pt. III. It was nice to get some jazz as a change of pace from the rest of this album list.

Perfect album to listen to on an Easter Sunday morning when it is approximately 38 degrees out Captain Sassy told me to keep an ear on the drummer. He is smacking those skin cans hard for sure I

Well this was a perfect Saturday morning listen. Part 1 was solid but part 3 really put things into perspective. Part 4 ended things on a note. Loved it I’m a sucker for some yazz.

This is perhaps an enjoyable album but as much love as this one gets, I’ve always preferred an album like Blue Train and Ascension. This one just feels like ordinary free fusion jazz. It’s really good no doubt about it and the playing is incredible for the duration of the 32 minutes. But, it’s not the essential jazz album for me.

A Love Supreme is a pleasant jazz album to listen to. I understand why this is considered a classic.

Sometimes lilting, sometimes chaotic. Some fine musicianship going on here. I enjoyed it

On the borderlands of out of control and smooth jazz, maybe a bit over the edge into chaos than I like but the rest the band were excellent and well worth the listen. To me nowhere near Miles Davies, my favourite jazz artist so far but I did enjoy the album how ever short it was. I loved the timpani on track 4.

Every time I've gotten an album I've told one of my friends and they'll give me a little fact if they like the album and apparently John Coltrane was such a good saxophonist that they made him a saint in a religion. I thought this album was really good to just sit and do a puzzle to, so that's what I did.

Great jazz

Well, I mean it was lovely. Bit of Jazz. Perfectly listenable. Not sure I'd ever be able to tell it apart from other jazz albums, but it's nice.

I don't think I've ever listened to a jazz album before, so I really have no frame of reference for what's considered a good jazz album. I did enjoy listening to this though, and it seemed like everyone involved with making it was a master of their instrument.

- had Pt. 1 as a morning alarm for a short time, so I already feel alert listening to this -Think I ended up being more focused on the talent of the musicians than the overall movement & composition. This might be a masterpiece, but having just listened to Coleman’s “The Shape of Jazz To Come” (not on this list) a few days ago, I find I still get lost sometimes in the tempo changes and frenetic improvisation of free jazz. Make no mistake, this is still a gripping listen, with one of the coolest bass solos I have heard. Was going to put it as a 3, but after listening to certain passages another time think I may have to bump it up to a 4

Made it halfway through. I enjoyed it for the most part but it felt disjointed sometimes

At the very beginning, “A Love Supreme”, feels like a train wreck. In its first track “acknowledgement”, sounds of cymbals, horns, upright bass, and of course Coltranes’ signature sax hit your eardrums from all sides. Wreckage is being strewn violently all around you and you’re just holding on for dear life, hoping to come out the other side unscathed. But In the thick of it all, comes light and salvation. Coltrane, like a true master at work, helps to guide and show you that it isn’t a wreck at all, but instead is actually an intricate, precisely-timed ballet of beautiful sound, creativity, and primal expression. By the time the third track, “Pursuance”, comes on you may think you have it all figured out. But the second Elvin Jones’ sticks hit the drum kit, you immediately know you’ve entered uncharted waters, a space that has and never will again be touched or tread upon. Arguably the best track, “Pursuance” holds you, shakes you, throws you around, and then leaves you hoping, praying, and pleading for just another second, truly pushing its limits to the breaking point, and then cruelly leaving you wanting more. And then, just as quickly as it had come, like a wave washing over you, it’s over. And in it’s place, gently leading you back to shore to all you know and love, is “Psalm”, the final track of the album. It feels less like a conclusion or finale, and more like the loving caress of a mothers touch on the back your neck. Showing you all the beauty and simplicity of the world around you. Reassuring, kind, soft, it brings you back to reality with the soft cooing of Coltrane sax. Almost like a poet, he helps to guide you through this tale, and help you to see and understand what you were just a witness too. But there are no words, no sweeping speeches, no long winded verses or hooks. Just pure sound. And by the end of the final note, we’ll, it’s like finishing that last page of a good book. You’re sad to see it end, wishful in thinking that there could be more, but feel all the better, stronger, and more alive for having sought it to its end. Like your first breath of air as a new-born baby, you never knew you needed it, but once you’ve tasted it, filled your lungs with it, you can never go back to what was before. It personally brought me back to childhood memories, when I would spend long summer days at my grandparents house and would give me the most wonderful flashbacks of car rides with my grandfather. No matter where we went, he would always have jazz on in the car. You wouldn’t notice it if you were paying attention, but under his breath, you could hear the unmistakable sound of him humming snd scatting along. It lives on only in my memories now, but if it weren’t for him I don’t know if I’d have the same appreciation and love for jazz that I do today. Love you and miss you grandpa, keep looking out for us and we’ll never forget you. 4.5/5⭐️- probably one of my new favorite jazz albums and an instant classic to go on the shelves; Realistically, not for everyone tho. If you aren’t someone who already likes/appreciates jazz, it might be a tough listen. Just being honest.

As someone not very experienced with jazz, this is a bit unapproachable for me. Though there were moments where I could definitely feel the music.

Incredible album, you can just feel the powerful force of this album through your whole body. Coltrane is a master at what he does and only proves it in this album, beautiful keys and drums really lays the backing perfectly. You can really hear he lets his soul play for him. 9/10 Album.

Fantastic and digestible Jazz album. Every part comes across incredibly strongly. Excellent arrangements. Definitely a worthwhile listen.

Very nice to listen to. I’m sure I’d give it a 5 if I knew more about jazz.

Definitely enjoyed this while working but I’m not the kind of jazz appreciator where I need to close my eyes and do nothing but focus on this album each time I listen to it. It’s good for sure but I tend to like slightly more accessible jazz

Jazz is only good when I feel like I'm being assaulted with a crowbar in musical form, and this fits the bill. Reading this guy's Wikipedia article was a trip. One day I aspire to also do so much heroin that people in San Francisco begin worshiping me as God incarnate. John Coltrane has officially joined my expansive list of a whopping four good jazz artists along with Charles Mingus, Frank Zappa and Fela Kuti.

Baller

Furious and complex. I can't even begin to understand what's going on musically here, I'm not that well-informed in that regard. I'm pretty sure I could listen to this 100x and find something new about it. I can't say I understand it, but I can appreciate it.

I’m not a big jazz fan, but this is something I could listen to again.

It was pretty good.

Stutt en mjög intensív og afar flott. Hlustaði tvisvar og myndi gera aftur. Gerið það endilega líka.

Listening to this one slightly out of order as I didn't have time the day this one came up for me. Listening to it the day after 'Bitches Brew' gave me a different perspective on it. As I mentioned, I don't have a deep knowledge or understanding of jazz music but this album is definitely more accessible for me and a completely different type of jazz music. This is a really beautiful set of songs with raw recording choices and a live feel. I had a much easier time sitting back and enjoying this album. It flows super well and allows you to just appreciate the incredible musicianship. Standout Tracks: Acknowledgement, Resolution, Pursuance

clearly a classic album but Jazz isn't on my top genres to listen to.

I just don't love this style of Jazz. Listened to some Miles Davis recently and loved it, but Coltrane isn't my favorite. That said, I can see why this is important to listen to.

Only listened to this maybe once before - it's great stuff! I was kinda expecting some listener-hostile avant-garde what-time-does-the-tune-start biz, (which I can handle and even enjoy, in small doses, when I'm in the right mood) but this was a pleasant experience! Will definitely be revisiting. It's just shy of a five, for me, but maybe with more repeats it'll grow on me.... Fave track - "Part 1 - Acknowledgement"

Really a masterpiece in jazz and it was a nice short album to listen to. 8/10.

Good jazz — but not sure I like jazz that much

It was cool

Relaxing jazz classic.

Typically more into gypsy jazz but really enjoyed this, lots of nice motifs

Alright, I don't know if it's because I'm getting older or what but it might be time to admit that I like jazz. Listened to it twice and found new things the second time around -- and, yes, I know what that makes me sound like.

A banger. Sure to trigger Alex's fight or flight response

Great jazz, no complaints, but not blown away 8/10

Très bon

Coltrane is the bar for jazz performance from that era. No exception for this album...

10/11/2022 Retrospective listen, Coltrane is god

Not bad. What you would expect from John Coltrane.

Muy bien, disfrutón

muy bonito 8 / 10

Jazz correcto. Me ha gustado. Un 4.

A religious experience for jazz fans, but for others probably not so much. It's elevating and otherwordly, but other more accessible Coltrane albums (My Favorite Things, Giant Steps [not Boo Radleys for Chrssakes!], Blue Trane, Soultrane, Ballads) are just as worthy of inclusion, through for different reasons.

Classed as one of THE most important Jazz albums ever - this is what it sounds like when a smack head is in cold turkey and finding the love of religion. If you're into atonal / modal jazz then this is for you, if you're more of a dip the toe in the jazz ocean then this probably isn't the best album to try. Yes, it is important, but be prepared for some hard work. Best Tracks: Acknowledgement; Resolution

Coltrane, you smooth cat.

I feel cooler for having listened to this album

One of the greatest jazz albums of all time. This album, track for track, is worth listening to.

What a great album. Not for people who just want their jazz in the background, though.

A love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme. 4.5/5

Beautiful.

Cool stuff, will add to my jazz collection.

Resolution 1:27 ?? 3 Crazy album. 4

Different but good

Glooove Supreme

A nice departure from all the electronic crap I've been assigned recently. I was into it. The "love supreme" vocals that kicked in out of nowhere were kind of creepy though. They were just so jarring and at odds with the generally cool vibe of the music.

I really enjoy jazz so this was a nice listen.

Brings back great memories

Omia jazzlemppareitani. Tosi smooth tosi smooth, mutta onko liian smoot? 4\5

Varmasti parhaita jazz-levyjä mitä olen kuullut. Vaikkei ihan sellainen, että milloin vain kuuntelisin.

Need to relisten

First ever listen to the legend John Coltrane. I still don't get jazz. Definitely good, but those who understand and truly appreciate jazz probably think it's great. I really enjoyed the ominous vibe on Psalm though.

A good album to put on in the background for a lonely night.

I don't know if I understood it. But I enjoyed it.

Excellent jazz

I’m not a jazz connoisseur, can’t generally differentiate between styles of jazz, and can’t really tell what I think the difference is between good jazz and great jazz. That said, John Coltrane is a legend, and seemingly for good reason. As it’s not my thing, I don’t think I’ll ever give a jazz album a 5, but this was as good as it gets I suppose.

A nice album. I’m not a fan of the extended drum solos and upright bass solos.

Classic jazz from my favorite period.

Listened Before? N This was a huge surprise. I loved it! Complex and not too repetitive. Added to Library?

Nice, would listen again

This was some high quality jazz. I enjoyed listening to it.

One of the most beautiful jazz albums ever made.

Good stuff. Nothing much to say

A fantastic jazz album. Coltrane is a wonder and this album shows how much of a genius he was. Between the stylings and composition this is a really brilliant album that makes jazz very enjoyable. 8.5/10

Não posso dizer que é ruim. Toca muito, apesar de que não sou fã de jazz.

Hardly a jazz aficionado but this is exactly the flavour of jazz I like - combo/quartet, no vocals, spacious. Works either as something to actively listen to but also fantastic mood pieces to set as semi-background music. Classic for a reason. 8/10 4 stars.

Coltranes' masterpiece here, superb Modern Jazz that has completely stood the test of time with the first track "Acknowledgement" being so recognisable through the many times it has be nodded to by other artist since it's release in 1964. Some great riffs by 'trane himself on Sax but also some wonderful meandering piano pieces from Mcoy Tyner who seems to just let the muse flow through his fingers. Both this ably backed by some great drumming and driving bass playing by Elvin Jones & Jimmy Garrison respectively. sometimes when a group of musicians paly together the magic just happens and I think it did when these four came together in 1964! A great record, rightfully on the list and also a Jazz favourite for me.

Pretty nice album. I don't know too much about jazz but I definitely do enjoy it when I hear it, so this was a good time. I don't know enough to say what specifically makes me enjoy it, but all I know is it's good. 7/10

Holy shit this album was absolutely stunning. The way he presented his story with 4 different themes was absolutely insane. A 4 song album and one of the best jazz albums I’ve ever heard

Meditations on love can sometimes--though by no means is it common!--lead to ecstasy, and in that ecstasy the still, small voice of that supreme Love becomes a whirlwind of fire. Do not awaken love until it so desires.

Good album, enjoyed McCoy and Coltrane pushing and pulling between the keys and sax

Yndisleg plata.

Listened to on 2/23/22 4.5/5 Favorite song: they were all lovely Wonderful jazz album

Du jazz. Je sais jamais quoi en penser. C'est agréable mais changera pas ma vie

Very relaxing to listen to. Will certainly look into listening more

Good ole jazz

Asti, ovo je jazz klasik u rangu sa Kind of Blue od Miles Davisa i sa svojim vlastitim Blue Train-om. Obavezno štivo. Međutim nije po mom mišljenju savršen poput ta dva albuma, zato četvorka.

jazz at its best

Fantastic jazz album. Love the drums on Part 3.

If you've ever seen Bosch on Amazon Prime Video, you'd know that there is a lot of jazz in the show, and your mind instantly goes to the view from his house perched in the hills on those stilts. It's a fantastic show, that's easy to watch again and again. And while I don't especially listen to much jazz, I seem to want to listen to this again. Especially since he named his dog Coltrane. But going back to this album, it reminds me of the show, so that's good enough.

Great jazz album!

Great tempo to all four parts. Started mellow and finished with a bang! Absolutely loved ever moment of this!

What a nice album, never extensively listened to Coltrane, but this was excellent. Really smooth.

This is, pun intended, supremely good jazz. Obviously the saxophone is incredible, but the keys and drumming are both top notch here as well.

Haven't done any focused listening to much jazz. Have a friend in a local college jazz band and I feel like jazz is more fun to see in person. I could listen to this album several times. Added to my favorite list.

jaime bien le jazz super metaphore de la vie ( n'a aucun sens)

One of greatest jazz albums of all time. And deservedly so

Jazz is not always my thing, but I always hear something new every time I listen to this

Amazing musicianship. I really enjoyed the flow from beginning to end and the great run time. Not as touching as his collaboration with Miles on Blue, and still awkward having jazz on this albums list next to so much crap, but definitely not just a 3 star piece of work.

Pas autant aimé que Blue Train, mais quand même très bon

Smooth jazz

I really dig it

I like it!

A pre-bedtime listen, chilled me out and had a great sleep, thanks Mr Coltrane!

Heavy Saxophone. Upbeat jazz beat in the background. 6/10

Supremely good. 9/10

I was really expecting this to be homework, but I found it really easy to listen to. A few too many bass and drum solos, perhaps, but it is largely fairly succinct and coherent, even for someone not as sophisticated in their jazz appreciation as I am am. (Hal understands this better. It is seems fairly straightforward to him, I suspect). I can understand the stretches. It's a bit more challenging than wallpaper jazz, but not so free as to be incomprehensible. Would listen gain.

A Love Supreme by John Coltrane (1965) The great saxophonist John Coltrane leads (on tenor) this quartet, comprising McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Garrison (double bass), and Elvin Jones (drums, percussion) in a complex fantasia of jazz wonder. Coltrane is careful not to dominate, giving plenty of space for individual virtuosity, thus satisfying a wide range of musical curiosity for 33 minutes. A very nice listen, well worth repeating. I did. Jones’ restless drumming provides energy throughout, sometimes sounding as if he had three hands. Tyler’s piano is intelligent, leading the listener through elaborate and sometimes blazing chord changes and dazzling solo scales. Garrison’s bass sometimes feels like it’s trying to keep up, yet is excellent on intonation, faithful providing fullness at the bottom of the tonal range. But Coltrane’s tenor sax shines, establishing the guiding motif at the beginning of each of the four ‘movements’ on this album (delayed in #2 and #3), and then exploding into sonic poetry. The progressions are inventive without being shocking or chaotic. Each phrase seems to make sense. I remain perplexed by the shift in the balance at 5:43 of the opening track, but other than that, the recording and mixing seems to be first rate for 1965. Most listeners (like me) shouldn’t presume to understand all of what’s going on here, but to simply affirm or deny whether the music has accomplished Coltrane’s stated goal of producing happiness in the heart. I say yes. 4/5

Incredibly naturally yet experimental sounds from this wonderful jazz album.

Legendary.

Great jazz album.

Smooth Jazz. Riding the Coltrane.

Love this jazz…..

Nice, short album. Honestly, a bit stressful to me, very frenetic jazz. Coltrane is a legend of course, but I found this one slightly more difficult to listen to than other jazz albums due to the energy. Still great though, I'd just prefer something a bit more laid back. Favorite tracks: Acknowledgement, Pursuance. Album art: About as boring as they come. Not only black and white, but just a picture of Coltrane. It always breaks my spirit when classic albums like this have weak covers. 4/5

It's a beautiful album, but just reinforces my awareness that I don't really understand jazz, as I can't really see what sets it apart from other great jazz records. I guess I need a deeper dive.

In your face JAZZ!! If you can embrance the note avalanche and tumble in the chaos it's quite and experience. Rather good.

all good except the mumbling

// Favs: – Part 4 Score: Strong 4

This is certainly an iconic jazz album but I think his earlier work eg Giant steps, Ole, My favourite things and the monumental Blue Train are better.

Nice fun energetic jazz, classic, easy to listen to while working.

Jazzy. Is Gud.

I don't know where it places in history, but definitely "jazz"

Pretty sweet Jazz album. Definitely feels like a full piece with and arc and vibe.

Nunca antes había escuchado un disco de jazz, y la verdad es que este me gusto mucho, desde la batería hasta el saxo, me dieron ganas de meterme a una banda de jazz xd

I don’t always understand it but it still amazes me.

I’m a huge fan of saxophone and jazz so this was absolutely delightful! Great background music for sipping coffee in the morning, reading a book, or a night drive through the city.

Bien. Sin más.

Rating: 7/10

While I'm not necessarily a huge jazz fan, quite enjoyable. I can understand why it's a classic. Probably worth 5 stars aside from personal preferences. Still, likely I'll come back to it.

I love the smooth jazz. Love the saxophone and its nice sound. Great album to put on and listen to while doing something else or just lying down and relaxing.

Loved the last song w/ bass starting. 1st ever jazz album listen in its entirety. Enjoyed it and would like to listen to it again.

Digging this. Return back to this one.

Jazz isn't really my thing, but this album was very interesting to listen to. I loved the loose structure with punctuated hits of beautiful brass.

excellent album

Listened to a few tracks, nice, classy trumpet and sax driven jazz

Music doesn’t need words to tell a story. Coltrane leads you through darkened city streets in pursuit of a lost lover, his saxophone guiding your every step, as other instruments - mischievous drums, stolid, menacing double bass, alluring piano - try to steal your attention and your affection. Gorgeous. Melancholy. To be listened to again and again.

Liked it

Groß. Deep und trotzdem gut hörbar

Absolute class, such good musicians. I still don't properly understand jazz enough to appreciate it to its full worth, but this was mint. Oozes class. 4/5

Jizzy Jazz

Not much of an appreciation for jazz but still thought it was good. Less good than Kind of Blue, so 8/10 ?

enjoyed this, would listen again as background music

JAZZ instrumental

7/10. I am terrible at rating Jazz type stuff, but didn't seem as interesting as some of the others we have had.

Now this is some soulful stuff. I really dig the structure and concept of this album a lot.

Was so excited to listen to another jazz album especially one from a musician I had heard of :)

Harder to get into than the other Miles Davis though I am somewhat aware of the intense musical stuff that’s going on. 8

Good. Not my favorite Coltrane album, though.

Elegante, intenso, eléctrico.

This is one of my favorite albums I have discovered so far. Its not an everyday listen, I will have to be in the mood for it. But for sure I will be listening again, and again, and again. Dat Drummer be Crazy. drums out of 5

I've heard the name Coltrane before but never listened to any of his music. Very pleasant music. I'm not a huge fan of jazz but maybe I was in the right mood or something, this really was good!

Good background noise nice jazz been wanting to get into jazz this is pretty good wouldn’t listen to without doing something else.

Great album. Started off a bit odd but some cool sounds. Cool progressions

A string of great motifs. Maybe one of the best jazz albums made.

Good. Feel like I need multiple listens to form a full opinion

In general, jazz is something I always wanted to get into , though I don't know that much about it. Like, wtf makes this one of the best albums ever made? Sounds like jazz to me. Good moments in there, and I bet that if I pay real good attention, I'd get even more out of it. Who knows. It's a fun listen though. And the cool thing about jazz is all the dynamism. Goes all over the place. And hearing where the next place they'll take you musically is cool. It's like an excercise in presence. Most pop songs, it's all about expectation and payoff I think. The bass drops just when it needs to. But with jazz, it's a constant flow. THings come out of nowhere. And most likely when "jazz that's not jazz" is when it tries to prevent that unpredictability. Lol maybe I do like jazz!

Classic.

I didn't realize I liked jazz until I listened to this album. The first track was simply outstanding. There were parts during the latter half of the album that seemed to go on a little long, but it was still phenomenal regardless.

High quality but nothing stood out

One day I should get faded and listen to it. Not my style, but I like how complex and interesting it is. Lots and lots going on at the same time. Still, without lyrics, not my style. Pt.4 psalm was my favorite from the four tracks.

I'm not a big jazz person, but his was alright. First half felt a bit too chaotic, while the second half wasn't chaotic enough. Wish there could have been a better middle ground

Might listen again

Great but jazz not rlly my style

Perfectly paced, I was surprised when it came back around to the start

Short and sweet

Always good to hear good music. Great to hear very unpredictable. Solid and soft just very different but amazing

Gefällt mir gut, aber nicht so sehr, dass ich das gezielt raussuchen würde, um es wieder zu hören.

06/19 Not bad, but not as good as Blue Train

I am partial to a bit of jazz when the mood takes me and there were moments here that I enjoyed but it was hard to fully appreciate this from one listen.

This is definitely a very emotional album. The second track is a highlight for me, but I feel like I am not at the level of comprehension where I can confidently follow the music. Overall, I like this album, but it is an acquired taste.

Listened on: Spotify Listening experience: Commute home - almost finished the final track but didn’t get there I really was not in the right mood for jazz. I don’t really enjoy it at the best of times - too chaotic. If I didn’t know this was an influential album I wouldn’t have picked it. The musicianship is impressive. Obviously supremely talented but I probably wouldn’t reach for it again unless in the right setting.

I’m not a big fan of jazz but I get why people would like this. Nice background type of vibe.

JAZZ! The first of hopefully many on this list. Although an enjoyer of jazz, i found this album to be striking in its way, and was just okay.

More Jaaaaazzz

Jazz Recording, pleasant enough but not really my thing. 3

I am not adept at judging how good/bad one is at saxophone but this bit of jazz was easy to listen too.

I respect it but I don’t feel a desire to relished and relished. It is fantastic though

Decent album

Enjoyable jazz album.

It was def good, but I wasn’t super moved.

A nice jazz album

The album is quite diverse, I liked the sound of these jazz tracks, it's not usual for me, it wasn't usual that the tracks went for 7-8 minutes, which, as I understand it, is typical of jazz.

Its nice but I prefer big band jazz

One of the greats! I don’t normally listen to a lot of jazz, but can appreciate it in the right atmosphere. Part three was my favorite by far, I loved the drums.

Coltrane managed to combine extraordinary technical mastery with a profound spiritual quest. Not for me.

Starts off very strong, but gets too repetitive for my liking in terms of timbre and melody. But how do you even rate an album like this against the others? Faves: Acknowledgement

I can get why it’s considered one of the influential jazz records, but I’m not a fan.

Listened to this whilst playing Metroid Fusion because I lost my headphones so I had to play it out loud. It's a good time, but I don't really connect with it in any meaningful way, I don't feel the emotion. Clearly other people do though. I can still appreciate the talent though.

ja pff jazz ma vf de saaie

Sounded great throughout. Nothing more to say.

I really did my best, I even listed to this album multiple times, but I just don't get jazz. The instruments are clearly well played and I can appreciate the skill involved. It sounds good, but I just don't get what is so amazing about it. Oh well.

This is indeed very good. I'm not a jazz expert but I found this album really enjoyable. 4 stars (I particularly enjoyed the first track).

Honestly, inflated expectations played a cruel trick on this album. I've read so many rave reviews about it, and the ratings on this site are way above average. What I personally heard was classic jazz busyness—skillfully performed, but nothing more

Not one of my favorite things, but that sax sure can still tell a story.

A fine jazz album, I'm happy to see stuff like this on the list. Did it blow me away? Not really. I might just be a little inexperienced when it comes to listening to Jazz, so i don't have the ability to appreciate nuances here. But it was a good time.

Kinda made me anxious

I thought it was okay

I'm not the target audience for this but I gave it a shot. It didn't blow my skirt up. I'll try again later -

I just don't love jazz. As far as jazz goes this seems good though. He's quite talented.

Solid jazz album, enjoyable listen.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, my only exposure to John Coltrane is Giant Steps and that being the whole 2-5-1 thing. Its probably a bit too intense for Ambient listening so not really sure when I would actively Listen to it. I think I got more into it as it went along and because I don't really have a "Jazz" ear I probably didn't get as much out of it as a more experienced person of the Jazz ouvre.

It's ok to say that jazz is too overstimulating for me

Modal jazz, post-bop, spiritual jazz.

Soulful, whimsical, tiptoeing jazz.

My husband has this album on vinyl so it was a pleasant treat to listen to there. I can't say this album converted me to a jazz fan but it's definitely the one I hated the least.

I just don’t get jazz. I’m sure this is amazing, but I don’t care for it. (3)

Lindo para viajar y trabajar. Muy Simcity. Nota: 3.4

I'm sure this is way better than I give it credit for, but it just didn't grab me on my listen. Favorite Song: Part IV - Psalm

Classic jazz album from Coltrane

3/5 Reminds me of the "free-form jazz" scene from Spongebob. Nice Sax

Not mine

A friend recommended to listen to this a year ago, and I remember it being very good. Revisiting it, it was still very fun to listen to. Part 2 is probably my favorite, although there are very good bits sprinkled throughout. 6.9/10

I am fairly new jazz listener. I really enjoy piano and guitar-based jazz music. I think I’m still trying to get there with horn and saxophone-based jazz. This was a great background record for work. But I don’t know if I can quite say it’s something I felt strongly towards. I can absolutely tell the musicians are world class. But it’s a little too freeform for my personal taste. A very high 3/5.

This is some good jazz

It's just a jazz album. some of it I enjoyed, and some of it sounded like noise to me.

As I've said in my previous reviews, I like an album that has a structure or a theme that it is centered around, especially in the case of an experimental jazz album like this. In addition to The track titles as movements , the album was also structured by. It's transitions and probably some recurring melodic themes that I couldn't pick up on one listen. The base solo at the end of the third track leads perfectly into the last one, and the drum solo that track opens with feels natural after the drum playing that closed the previous track. That sums up most of my favorite aspects about this album, but overall, this was a bit too chaotic for me as far as jazz goes, so due to that bias It will settle at 3. Still, this album has an ethereal quality whose intrigue cannot be denied.

No riffs?! Still good

Liked this

Sometimes unmelodic, but chill

the more i listen to jazz, the more i seem to realise why i cannot appreciate it. to me jazz is overstimulating, without any continuous structure and uniformity, it always sounds very crowded and distracting and i always end up feeling exhausted after listening to any jazz albums. to me jazz is like a mental exercise, requiring most of my mental focus, even when put on minimal volume and played mostly as background music. which is such a shame.

great to listen to while reading, love the vibe

I could get in to jazz I think. For some reason it makes me anxious though.

I’ve had this album a while, but don’t play it much, and listening yesterday, it’s decent and I know JC was superb, but ok

Jazz 🎷 Easy to listen to while working. Happy rainy days vibes. Matt: drinking coffe in London on a misty day, early 70s.

Now this! This is something I have no idea how to rate! I had to give this album my full attention because I don't understand how to appreciate jazz yet. But i think this album helped me get a little closer. It is a meticulously arranged piece and as a baby musician I can't even begin to understand how you would write, perform or jam on this piece, amazing. Every element dances around each other with feverish intent making it sound quite chaotic at times, and yet Coltrane frequently directs the pieces back to some form of harmony. My favorite track was "Part III - pursuance". Musically this feels like a 5. But for me In my context, I feel like I can only give this this a three. I look forward to listening to this again, probably the live set too. Bring on more Jazz!

3/5 not really going to turn on myself Prob bad listen on headphones (teveel stereo, werkt prob beter met mix van channels) Had wat warming up nodig I feel like the bringing your friend to his first jazz performance meme

jazz be jazzing. not smart casual jazz kinda jazz

Not too bad. Not my kind of jazz tbh I prefer the big band stuff or jazz fusion (still kinda jazz) but I didnt mind listening. My favourite was Resolution by far, and I also liked Psalm a bit. Not sure I 100% vibes with the other ones. While I appreciate it my problem is that there is a slight lack of a tune or musical direction at points, which is just intrinsic to the type of jazz. Doesn't stop Coltrane being one of the best sax players and musicians ever.

I liked this album a lot. I love a short album but this felt more like one piece of music which was released as an album. Not necessarily a bad thing but idk if an album it makes.

Look, I know this is good, but I don't know enough about jazz to know how to talk about it. Read a different review. I liked it though!

Pure jazz.

-so short??? I thought the albums would be +10 songs -fire intro -not my usual style but I kinda like it -the fact that the trompet is only on my left ear and the drums on my right is reaaaally annoying me --> I honestly just want it to be over bcs of that (if you ignore that good, but not amazing) 6.125/10

Too chaotic for me. The last track was good though

I can't give an objectively great masterpiece that deserves to be on a list like this less than 3 stars. Similarly, I can't give a jazz album more than 3 stars as I can't stand jazz. 3 stars it is. Sorry, Coltrane, I wish I had better taste.

I'm not a connoisseur of jazz, i found this listenable and great for work. I really can't offer much more than that.

3.5 I dont think I have listened to this before. My Jazz knowledge is not that great; this was a lot more freeform than what I traditionally think of Coltrane. Obviously would need more than a listen or two

Pursuance

I think jazz is just getting a 3 from now on

I liked this. More tuneful, pleasant and chill. More of a noticable journey than other jazz records weve rated on here. The lyrics were unexpected. However brief. I assumed he was a mute who could only communicate through his instrument.

I never really understood jazz ... not as in i find it awful, i do admire the technic it requires, i like the play and the dialogue that it creates between musicians. I just don't feel enjoyment from listening to it.... i do feel the spiritual energy about this album... but it still wouldn't be something i just listen to just like that. musicality : ★★★★★ enjoyment: ★★

Although instrumental jazz is not one of my favorite genres and it's not what I usually listen to on a daily basis, I really liked this album.

It's jazz. I'm not scared of it. I enjoyed the listen, and despite not knowing a lot about jazz, I feel it was a pretty good album. That's all I have to say. There's only 4 tracks so I can't really pick a favourite.

Buen álbum de jazz no esxni estilo de música pero disfrute mucho escuchando el saxofón y la bateria

Smart and precise and actually goes somewhere.. I guess I don't like jazz that much.

Excellent music to play in the background for when I'm sitting at a jazz place, a cafe or someplace similar. The energy is great, how it builds up and changes across the four parts was very fun to hear. I'm probably not enough of a musichead to actually appreciate how good this album likely is and I'm a bit incapable to listen to music without lyrics. Singing adds something to a song for me that I can't explain. So while I did like it quite a lot, I wouldn't say it is an album that I would return to. Overall, leaving with a really positive impression though!

I wish I would understand how genius this is but I can't. I'm a simple man. Maybe I'll get it some day when I'm 40

интересно, довольно динамично для джаза, интересеое развитие. идеально на фон, но все равно требует достаточного внимания

A very solid jazz album.

I’m love the catalyst this daily list offers to finds things out and expand my knowledge if music. Free form jazz is not a genre of music I understand but I’ve had fun getting to know this album and finding out how it was made and what it says. I can’t rank it higher than a 3 for now as I’m still learning to appreciate it, but totally get why it is in this list. Favourite movement was iv, psalm

Not a jazz dude but this had some good grooves in it.

Jazz is background music at best and actively annoying at worst for me. This album is on the background music end. Great musicians, but I wouldn't choose to listen to this.

This jazz record is smooth sailing, but it feels like a casual jam rather than a destination worth visiting. I appreciate the skill on display, but it lacks that certain something to make me fall head over heels. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Acknowledgement - Resolution - Psalm

Place and time for everything. This was enjoyable but it also felt like something I would put on and clean the house to.

saxophone god

A really decent jazz record with minimalistic voice usage just in the first track; this one makes a pleasant background listen, but I couldn't see, for the most part, why whis exact album is outstanding. That's why three stars.

Good background jazz but didn’t hit home with me.

It's alright. Not used to this

decent

I'm not going to pretend like I can speak intelligently about this album. John Coltrane is operating on another level of artistic expression that I could never begin to understand. I'm jealous of people who can. I don't mind listening to this at all, but it's not something I come back to.

Skiddily bop raz matazz jazz, like the avant garde type, never really clicked with me, but to know that hey, this is John Coltrane, one of the greatest saxophonists of all time, and he basically invented this kind of jazz (or pushed it further, however you want to describe him), then you gain an appreciation for the work. It was a little funky at times, but these guys can really play and was not a bad listen.

lowkey great for studying, kinda a banger

I'm sure this is genius and played great and all, but I didn't like it.

Some of this sounds like what I imagine people who don't like jazz think all jazz is - that is four or five people playing stuff that's unrelated all at the same time. At times it sounds like a panic attack. The wildness is weighed by other moments of focus that show that everything here is deliberate. I was going between 3 and 4 and landed on three because, while I enjoyed it enough, I doubt I'll be coming back to this one when Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way" is right there.

A peculiar album by todays standards. The skills is very clear in every song, but most of it does not really do it for me. The slower ending to the album did draw me in, and it made listen much closer than I usually do

I love this list takes me out of my comfort zone. 33 minutes of Jazz in 4 songs that I would otherwise never had listened to, but also that I will probably never listen to again. 7/10

You have to like saxophone. Not my style but i understand why this album is considered as epic.

I fear jazz

I think I overestimated how many of these 1001 albums, I'd listened to, because I thought I'd end up getting something I've heard like 1/3 of the time. What's actually happening is it's having me listen to stuff I figured I'd get to some day, but not today I haven't listened to much jazz, and I thought I'd maybe start with some 50s stuff, but I got Love Supreme here so there you go I think I'm a somewhat story driven listener, something I find easier to find in music with lyrics, but I did think this was pretty cool. The drums are great This wasn't a great review but oh well just scroll past. for being a fairly enjoyable departure from what I usually listen to, I think it just crosses my first listen 3 threshold

3.5 (32:47, 4 tracks, 16th album excluding some live ,1965), jazz saxophonist So I’m going to give Coltrane a 3, for now, I could see this album growing more on me, I started a 2 and I'm up to 3.5. I’ve never been a true jazz aficionado. I do like Smooth Jazz. I like some other Coltrane but this album is intense, the saxophone and drumming are off the charts. This album is a mood album - I think the right evening I might be able to final groove to it and give it a 4, I'll try and revisit it. Recorded in one session on December 9, 1964. Referred to as the saxophonist's "definitive tone poem," it ranks among Coltrane's best-selling albums and is widely considered one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of jazz and one of the greatest albums ever made. Coltrane died just 3 years later (1967) at age 40 of liver cancer (possibly brought on by hepatitis, possible contacted through use of heroin). Four parts: "Acknowledgement" (which includes the oral chant that gives the album its name), "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". Coltrane plays tenor saxophone on all parts. One critic has written that the album was intended to represent a struggle for purity, an expression of gratitude, and an acknowledgement that the musician's talent comes from a higher power. The album’s improvisational and spiritual intensity has led some to liken it to glossolalia, or speaking in tongues, as it conveys a profound sense of ecstatic devotion. This sacred quality has led it to become the “central text” of the Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church in San Francisco. Begins with the bang of a gong (tam-tam) and cymbal washes on the first track, "Acknowledgement". Jimmy Garrison enters on double bass with the four-note motif that lays the foundation of the movement. Coltrane begins a solo. He plays variations on the motif until he repeats the four notes thirty-six times. The motif then becomes the vocal chant "a love supreme", sung by Coltrane accompanying himself through overdubs nineteen times. In the fourth and final movement, "Psalm", Coltrane performs what he calls a "musical narration". Lewis Porter calls it a "wordless recitation". There are two known live recordings of the "Love Supreme" suite. For years the only known live recording of the "Love Supreme" suite was of a performance at the Festival Mondial du Jazz Antibes in Juan-les-Pins, France, on July 26, 1965. The other known live recording of the suite was recorded October 2, 1965, at The Penthouse in Seattle. The set was recorded by saxophonist Joe Brazil. This live performance was released on October 22, 2021, by Impulse! as A Love Supreme: Live in Seattle. I listened to both. A Love Supreme was widely recognized as a work of deep spirituality and analyzed with religious subtext, although cultural studies scholars Richard W. Santana and Gregory Erickson argued that the "avant-garde jazz suite" could be interpreted otherwise. In 2003 and 2012 it was ranked number 47 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. 1. Part 1: "Acknowledgement" 7:43 2. Part 2: "Resolution" 7:20 3. Part 3: "Pursuance" 10:42 4. Part 4: "Psalm" 7:05 The John Coltrane Quartet: John Coltrane – bandleader, liner notes, vocals, tenor saxophone McCoy Tyner – piano Jimmy Garrison – double (aka standup) bass Elvin Jones – drums, gong, timpani

enjoyable listen! i think i'm just not the biggest fan of jazz. i liked the fourth movement the most it was a bit softer & more wistful

that was jazz!

Very solid jazz album Flows into itself and transitions beautifully, admittedly wasn’t paying the closest attention but I was suddenly listening to the next track at lots of moments. I like the crescendo into the final song which is my favorite. Psalm. Jazz album sounds like an oxymoron to me still but I like the way this one captures the band and ambience. It does feel like a beautiful love for jazz is portrayed

Not at all tuned in to what makes good jazz and what makes great jazz, other than feeling. Honestly, parts of this were great, other parts left me scratching my head. Falls closer to good jazz, but I am sure it's partly user error.

Very jazz. Objectively good, but I don't understand music theory enough to be able to get super into it

Love Coltrane, this one is a classic, I tend to prefer more fusion-like jazz but this is so peak

As a verified jazz aficionado, I can confidently state this is almost as good as it gets amongst the handful of jazz albums I’ve listened to in their entirety. I like the opening track the most.
