Var chill
jazz er fint det
I'm sure this is very clever and very good if you're into this kind of thing. But I'm too ignorant to understand so a lot of it was just very background-y without much of a tune. I liked the odd bit but never really got into it. 2.5 stars.
Not for me
I wish I liked jazz. Some of this album is cool, some is exhausting. Hard not to feel something for the last few minutes of the last track though.
Lijep ali izuzetno intenzivan jazz. Malo previše za potpuno uživanje.
Very good jazz.
I find my feelings about jazz very complicated as I don't know what I am missing but I think the problem is with me.
Jazz/5
hard to just sit and listen to but good
More jazz. There seems to be a lot of jazz on this list. 900 jazz albums you need to listen to before you die and these other 101 rock/pop albums. Again, I'm not that versed in jazz and a lot of it sounds similar to me. I enjoyed this album simply because it was about 30 minutes long. A nice length to listen to an album you're unfamiliar with. Didn't hate and didn't love it. Is this the best John Coltrane album? or one of 10 more on the list?
I love the stages format, how you feel entrenched in the acceptance of love up to the end of it. Favourite track: Acceptance
Jazzzz
favourite track - A Love Supreme, Pt. III - Pursuance No strong feelings on this.
A bit more interesting than a lot of the stuff I've gotten recently. Good start certainly, although there were sections in the middle which ended up noodling a little too much for me. But different and interesting for sure.
Tbf it's quite nice as a jazz album. I mean there is little form or structure. He is sort of just playing notes, but that might be me misunderstanding it. I presume that's why there are no actual titles for the songs, just a Love Supreme Pts 1,2,3 & 4. Still quite enjoyable though.
Not my usual jam but I actually really enjoyed it while I was working today! Or maybe I'm just happy to be back at work!
God help me, I just don't like this kind of jazz.
I enjoyed it! Jazz isn’t usually my jam but everything works so well
A Love Supreme Pt. 1 - The drums on this song were so chaotic but also seemed to make sense, it seems like the drummer had an idea of what they wanted and went with it. The vocals were a nice surprise, although they were mundane but the base afterwards mimicking the vocals were quite calming afterwards. A nice intro to something I wouldn't usually listen to. A Love Supreme Pt. 2 - The intro to this song hit like a truck, immediate stank face, again the drums seem chaotic but more complex. The instruments so far seem to don't seem to blend but act as separate entities within the songs but still work cohesively to such a large extent that the songs are enjoyable when listened to as a whole but also when focusing on a specific instrument, especially the piano (Although the chords seem to clash somewhat in places but I think that's just jazz). The woodwind instruments are by far my favourite. A Love Supreme Pt. 3 - The drums are much more aggressive, the speed is really impressive but the piano seems to be the star of this song which has yet to happen. Again, I get the vibe that these musicians weren't given a sheet to work off but just a general idea and their familiarity with the instruments and jazz meant they could articulate that idea, whether it was emotional or purely musical. I think the saxophone is my favourite instrument, its almost screaming towards the end of the song. There's a lot more panic in the instruments and I think I understand that the instruments are conveying not the same rhythm but the same emotion, this song instils a strong sense of panic towards the end as the notes become more shrill and after that, lonely but punchy, like internal thoughts after a moment of stress. A Love Supreme Part. 4 - This is by far my favourite intro so far, the instruments convey a sense of turmoil, I confused it for a romantic intimacy at first but maybe that's the intended message, a feeling of stress in familiarity, a trauma or feeling only present in a harmful but transformational relationship. After reading the definitions for the songs and the meanings of the album as a whole, I was completely off with the intended messages which shows that music is about perspective and that different experiences can covey the same strong and seemingly unique emotions. This was a great album and it's nice to begin learning about jazz as a culture rather than just on To Pimp a Butterfly.
načelno dosta dobro, ali na nekim trenutcima kao da je prepusto, dakle nije mi dosljedno
Steady, deep
Confession: Never listened to this album before. I've heard it mentioned dozens of times. So thank you to this list for introducing me and making me sit down to listen. Jazz is not really my genre - that said I do like more modern bands that stray into unusual keys and signatures like later Radiohead and especially when combined with beats.
Smooth and easy to listen to. I have no real understanding of jazz, but I didn't hate this.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background I appreciate the musical prowess here, but to date I don't find jazz compelling enough to keep returning to when compared to other genres in this list.
I enjoy jazz. I really do. It's a beautiful art form full of talent I could never fathom having myself, and a really important part of music history and legacy. I have no notes on performance, or production. It's very well done, well written, well performed. I think I learned from this album that I just have to *be there* to really enjoy jazz. I went to jazz concerts in music school and loved them. It's just not something I really choose to listen to on my own time. Also, I really just don't love the saxophone as an instrument. I know, big gasp all around. It just doesn't tickle my ears like it does for others. I want to rate it higher, but recorded jazz like this really isn't my thing. If I had been alive to see this in concert in person it would be a 5/5. However, it just falls a little flat through headphones. 3.3/5.
Hmm, for Jazz, it's quite alright! I'm sure this is a musically complex piece, but, I only found it sufficient as background music to watch the hustle and bustle of a city.
Will I ever have a jazz album click with me beyond a respect for the technical prowess? And if I'm being honest, this respect is almost a taught skill, a remnant from music school. So is it really for me? Probably not. Will I rate it low? My programming prohibits it.
Jazzy
I liked it and can appreciate the level of talent these fellas have. 3.5.
This needs more McCoy Tyner…
Did I know prior: No Favorite song: Resolution Easy to listen to, but not very memorable.
Jazz makes me feel chaotic if I'm not very relaxed. I love the beats and the way the music rises and falls. It exhausts me.
I want to love this, there is so much great music in it. But then there is also quite a bit that just sounds like if I tried to play jazz. Like pluck whatever and call it jazz. I know that it works and if I had a better ear and understanding of theory it would tickle a special part of my brain. But I don't, and it doesn't.
Not my type of music but it sounded pretty!
Better than Wobbie's Love Supreme.
I know this was an influential album, but I think I have a hard time knowing how to judge an instrumental jazz album in this context. It's musically interesting, but without having a strong grasp on the genre I don't feel very compelled one way or another.
I like jazz, and this is some good jazz. But I like other things more.
Whiplash coded
Enjoyed more than “Kind of blue”, why exactly - I have no idea
2.5 just not my thing
Fine.
I'm not a big fan of songs without words or slow jazzy songs... this album doesn't hit but that doesn't mean it's bad. I found myself grooving a bit.
I like John Coltrane and I liked the parts of this album that I could focus on during my workday. I think this album has too much nuance and range to listen to while doing something else (at least for my sorely overclocked brain). I should listen to it again with intention -- it would probably be a wonderful experience.
Musically speaking, it’s great. I hear that. I just don’t like jazz.
6/10 Musikalisch eigentlich sehr sehr toll was Jazz angeht, aber die Soli sind für mich nicht so angenehm zu hören, weil sie in dem Album für mich zu ungeordnet und hektisch sind
Good album, nice introduction to Jazz music, loads of great grooves.
I really liked the sound of it although it’s not really like my genre of music like it’s more instrumental than like singing. It is very nice for like background music or if you’re doing something.
Jazzy! Listened while making brekky and it kinda hit :) liked the instrumentals especially piano and sax
A lovely album to listen to when you want jazz that’s not quite background music. Invigorating and to be enjoyed while doing a crossword or channeling snoopy cool energy.
That was a lot of fun, I haven’t really listened to jazz before. I listened with claire during breakfast, I was eating a yogurt bowl and untangling a bunch of yarn across my projects to sew in ends at the cafe today, I felt like an escape artist!
While I love Coltrane, I understand that this gets a little too scatty at times. I love the sound of that sax though.
Just finished Stranger Things Season 5 last night, what a coinkydink.
I have and listening again I struggle with Pt1, however Pt2 &4 make this my favourite Coltrane.
Didn't really speak to me personally.
Not my type of music, but pretty good still
saxophone, jazz, very long songs, no lyrics, possibly good for studying, pt. IV is my favourite
Cool. I’m not a jazz person but I could get through this album feeling good
Très bon album
Ist mir zu unruhig
Jazz is ok
So nice! I could really hear the storytelling behind all 4 songs, highs and the lows. Brilliant
Favorite songs: A Love Supreme, Pt 1: Acknowledgement
Jazzy, pero igual movido me gusta, igual como para poner de musica de fondo, En realidad no lo escuche tanto no me inspiro tanto como para escucharlo mas de una vez pero eso no quita que no sea bueno
Sigh. Not for me. 3 stars because as jazz goes, it didn’t make me gulp adderal by the handful. It just isn’t my taste
Beautiful honestly it reminded me of whiplash movie ,classic jazz with absolute drums that was an exceptional 32mins
Cool, smooth jazz
not really into the jazz, but a good album to sit back to and relax
***an ok trumpet instrumental.
Soo good
Great songs but not really enough happening to be presented as an album like this
I love jazz but I think that’s not one of my favorite albums. 10/6
Good background music, harder dedicated lesson for me
Not a huge fan of jazz but this was good.
Some of these tunes were familiar, and I knew the album was regarded as a classic, but I’d never listened to it as a single collection. It’s…‘modern’ jazz. And really nice too, but always feel like I ‘should’ enjoy jazz a little more than I actually do.
For me, this would be art that I would visit, not art I would live with. The backstory is moving, and I can see how he put his whole heart into the album. 3/5
I struggle with jazz normally, but I enjoyed this. Probably warrants more, but to my ears 3/5
Got into the vibe for parts 2 and 3.
безоговорочно классика. легендочка. хотя я ни одной песни до сих пор не послушал. 6/10
JAZZ. Enough said.
A very nice jazzy album
Pt.IV was definitely my favorite song in the album. A nice smooth jazz
Bit too experimental for me.
Good background music, but I don't see what really interests everyone else
Jazzy man jamming on a sax with drums, piano, bass, etc. Basically no lyrics. Pretty good, but not really my style.
nesu dziazo megeja, bet manau klausysiu kitu sio atlikejo gabalu. geri tembrai
I understand it's important and high quality, but I'm too dumb to fully appreciate it
First song gave me visions of the pink panther. I can see be used in a movie where it’s a bunch of montages.
Another relisten for me. I'm mixed on this album; the second half of this record is legitimately great. Very intense, almost oppressive jazz. But I find the first half of be kind of emotionally cold; it's hard to find any element of it to grasp onto (aside from the drum solo towards the end of part 2 which is stunning). I lean more towards positive than negative, but I almost feel unequipped to evaluate this. It's one of jazz's holy grails and it left scratching my head for parts of it.
Not the genre I’m the most well versed in or my favorite, but I appreciated the dynamics of this album. There is something intriguing to me about the authentic narrative of a song/album recorded in one take.
I find it difficult to get into Jazz but enjoyed having this on whilst I was reading. Have heard a lot about John Coltrane and had heard of the album before, so good to listen to it. 7/10
Oui c'est effectivement du jazz.
Good, but feel like I don’t know enough about the genre to know what I’m listening to. Edit three hours later: “a love supreme, a love supreme” is still stuck in my head. Effective simplicity. Amazing
Not into Jazz a lot, but I enjoyed this. ★★★
clearly there's a lot of complicated musical artistry going on here, but i just don't think i like jazz all that much.
I'm sure it's brilliant. I really really wish I could understand and appreciate jazz, but it's all a bunch of toots and thunks and means nothing to me. I fully recognize my inability to understand instrumental complexity is a me problem. It sounds nice, though.
Like a lot of the great jazz albums, this rose no further than good background music for me. I enjoyed it very much as that, but no more.
Great album but didn't like it as much as I expected. The arrangement and talent is instantly notable, each song is impressive and catchy, but there are various points where I just didn't jive with the flow. At points it felt like anxiety music.
Chill, classic, ambient jazz
Мне понравилась часть 4, а предыдущие 3 вызвали неконтролируемую тревогу, как-то не очень я поняла этот джаз
Se nota lo crack del tipo. Pero no es un estilo o género que me llegue aun. 5/10
I know the importance of this album, but I find it hard to really enjoy jazz unless I'm there in person. Chaos and discordance works with the energy of a live gig, but I don't think it quite makes its way across properly in this format. I didn't enjoy it enough to give a 4, but feel dirty giving a 3. But still, sometimes it's nice to feel dirty.
This is a hard album to rate because I don’t have much jazz listening experience to compare against. It is definitely audibly pleasing, but I’m not going to be adding any of the parts to my music. I like part 2 the best, the piano is incredible. Part 4 is next, feels almost emotional and angry. 1 and 3 are fine, nothing too special. Good music to listen to while working. Pretty calming too. Overall pretty average, but best I’ve heard for jazz yet. 3.4 stars.
It was fine but not something I would listen to again. Not my cup of tea I guess.
So chaotic and fast. How am I supposed to enjoy this? Very talented but this isn’t for me.
it's alright. not for me but i respect it
It was Okay I do not really see it as somethign earth shattering but i enjoyed it
Ugh, I do not know how to review this album. How do you review an album where the musicianship is so talented, the man is so important to the genre, and the genre itself is so important to the culture of America... but you just don't really like it very much? It's funny because I could say something like "if you like jazz, you should give this a listen," but something tells me that there are exactly zero jazz fans that need me to tell them about John Coltrane. If you don't know jazz, well, this album was extremely jazzy. Pure jazz, even. So it would be a great starting point. 3/5 (sorry).
This is a good jazz album but this type of jazz doesn't really do it for me. It's just not weird enough. His talent is undeniable but never in my life have I sat down and said "I'm going to listen to John Coltrane."
Part I Acknowledgement - 6 (didnt love the ominous chanting towards the end) Part II Resolution - 7 Part III Pursuance - 7 Part IV Psalm - 7 I like the review that compares this to English football. There is something amazing here but I just dont think its for me, though I can appreciate the art.
Ok som bakgrunnsmusikk.
Obviously Coltrane is a legend and I can appreciate the talent but I found the album to be very repetitive and sort of droning on at times. Maybe I'm biased since Jazz Fusion is more my thing than traditional jazz but I'm giving it 3 stars only out of respect for the man.
# Album Name: A love supreme # Artist: John Coltrane # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Pretty average. Jazz doesn’t connect with me. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? hmmmm not sure. Maybe
прик, иногда можно послушать.
I get that this is important and all. But it just doesn't really gel for me. Maybe I don't know enough about Jazz. Maybe I lack the spiritual dimension. Whatever it is, it doesn't move me like it clearly does many others. Sorry John. It's not you, it's me.
Albums You Must Hear Before You Die #1 This was really a beautiful album but it isn't made for me. It's a pioneer of improvisation jazz but there are different things that make me hate a bit this album 1. The cymbals They make me some fucking headaches, especially on Act III. 2. That Bass solo at the end of Act III What the fuck ? 3. The voice of John Coltrane at the beginning of the album
Saxophone driven jazz
7/10
spotify:album:7qdi1B4jqHEA5NvV34haRP
I'm down with it. I don't love it but I'd happily listen again
Can appreciate the musicality even if in the end it's not much ch better than background music for me.
i do love some jazz for sure
Now this is some good jazz! But even good jazz can only do so much for me. My rating is in no way a knock on the skill at play here or the impact of the recording, but instead a reflection of my own ears and their ability (or lack thereof) to enjoy this type of music.
Great! Sad isn’t my favorite jazz instrument but good.
Jazz just isn’t for me. Sounds like a lot of trumpet tootling, piano bashing, ride cymbal pinging, uncontrollable and quite frankly, off putting noise. I’m going to score it a three because I’m certain that if jazz is your thing, then this is great. Nonsense to me though, sadly.
I understand that it's legendary and influential. But I have to stick with my rating system. This gets a 3 for "I probably wouldn't put it on myself, but I wouldn't be upset if it was playing."
Appreciate the musical talent and creativity, but not for me.
5.5/10
I've liked some other Coltrane (Blue Train), but I don't think I have the musical vocabulary to really appreciate or enjoy this one.
3/5 - I’m not sure how to rate this style of jazz albums that are way out of my usual listening zone. It’s obviously a classic for the genre, but I’d get a lot more out of it with a knowledgeable guide.
I never did like Bebop jazz. The kind of jazz I like has a beat to it and you can dance to it. I always thought this kind of jazz was akin to musical masturbation. I know it influenced a lot of people and it's a classic but I can't give it more than three stars.
Solid 3, first part was hard to listen to but it got better
This was fine
Alright. Feel like we haven’t had much jazz recently, at least compared to how much we had at the start
I wish I was the kind of person this really hit for but I guess I'm not. I didn't have a bad time listening by any stretch but it just didn't make me feel much. I'd be willing to try it again at some point to see if it grows on me but I'm not especially eager to put in loads of hours to force it to do so. I see why people praise the musicianship so highly though
Ok
Rv
I’ve never really been able to get into this kind of jazz, but that’s not to say it’s not a great record - sounds great, musicianship is off the charts, etc. I need more listens to really appreciate it.
Been a minute since I’ve heard this album. It’s tough for me to keep up with it but it’s still a very enjoyable listen. I still like some of Coltrane’s other records better.
Modal jazz.... post-bop... every day kids are coming up with new genres !! This is nice. I like a tenor sax, and there were no hidden unpleasantnesses. But does it rise above "nice"? Afraid not.
It would be disrespectful to give less than 3 stars, but I'm not a jazz girl
7/10
Relaxing background sounds.
I feel like the more I listen to critically acclaimed jazz music, the more I can understand the importance and influence, but that doesn't mean I have to live it. It's not bad, it's just that jazz isn't my cup of tea, but I appreciate finally having the time to listen to a jazz masterpiece.
3/5
3.75
This is my first Coltrane album. It’s great but it’s jazz so I don’t really get it. But I do like it. Not an unpleasant moment within and I bet with repeated listens I would appreciate it more. I listened to most of this album on my stereo and move to headphones for the last track. And I am only noticing Coltrane is coming out of just the left ear and the band is centered and to the right. If you listen to just the right channel it sounds like he’s playing along in a different room. Very cool. This feels like the kind of music you create your own narrative to.
kept forgetting that i was listening to music. at one point the album ended and i don't know how long i was reading on the subway before i noticed. i don't get jazz yet.
It was ok- not the best jazz I have ever heard according to my taste but not bad.
If nothing else, this 1001 challenge is challenging my perception that I hate jazz. Can’t say that I loved this, but I was fascinated by how much it pulled apart each player then managed to pull back together
This is clearly a phenomenal performance, but I think I may have been having some audio sensitivity on the day I listened and the brighter trumpet timbres and sustained notes were piercing to my ears.
now THAT is some noir movie jazz. hell yeah. liked this one 👍
Only occasionally set my teeth on edge. I shouldn't really be so flippant but I feel like there's enough love for this album out in the world that it can take me being a little flippant. This is jazz that I can respect and understand but it's still jazz and I'm still inexplicably a brass player who doesn't Get Jazz. 2.5
classy jazz
I love Jazz. Having said that I’m not a huge fan of Coltrane. But this has its moments.
I'm starting to get fed up with jazz. Most jazz albums sound the same. "A Love Supreme" is still a nice album, though. The first part was my favourite. I'll listen to the next album tomorrow because I'm a bit ill. 3 stars for "A Love Supreme".
I'm surprised but I like it.
It’s jazz. It’s some damn good jazz, but it sort of limits its own repeat listenability for me with its genre. I think I prefer Blue Train.
Meh, not my style
I enjoyed this short jazz album! This kind of jazz felt more chaotic and energetic than most jazz I’ve listened to in the past. Overall, I would listen to this album again depending on my mood since it’s not the mellow kind of jazz that you can just have on in the background which is typically what I prefer.
Some parts sound good but others are too raucous for me
Brilliant but a hard listen
We put this album on for a drive across the island I live on. I think I'd picked the score from the first 3 notes. The drums on this album were really top notch. A real highlight. The horns, not so much. It was just that sporadic jazz style that I think if I watched live at a show, I'd eventually shout obscenities at. I like jazz, but this seemed like one of the albums that sent people towards Jazz fusion (something I don't like!). My wife said, 'this is good background music.' I'm inclined to agree. Middle of the road 3 stars here. When do we get to the Dave Brubeck?!
This albums is like explaining string theory to somebody who doesn’t understand it. You’re giving fantastic examples to help explain the thinking behind the theory, and all of its subsequent implications, but the person you are talking to isn’t really keeping up.
Good listen -3/5
omg i feel so much emotions from this album i like it i can listen to it when im chilling with my friends
solid jazz
harður djass, frekar flókin. sem tilgerðarlegur maður gef ég þessu annan séns. 3,5.
Still don't like Jazz - but this was okay.
Jazz.
I would to have listened to him live!
A good record, but this could have been awesome it they all had only played the same song at the time.
I liked it, congruent and short
Didn’t like it at first but it grew on me after a couple listens. The drummer is really good. And the saxophone sounds so cool.
en fin
Funky A bit long for my preference Good instrumental
A historical landmark in jazz, for sure. Is it interesting, captivating? Maybe this is sacrilege, but eh? Quite a lot of talent on display, with some impressive solos. But I guess it didn’t leave much of an impact
A Love Supreme is often called a masterpiece, it lands more as a powerful idea than an enjoyable listen. Coltrane is clearly reaching for something higher, turning his saxophone into a voice for his faith and struggle. The opening chant in “Acknowledgement” sets a strong tone, but from there the album gets intense and sometimes overwhelming, especially if you're not already deep into jazz. The musicianship is top-tier, with the whole band playing as if they're in a trance. Still, the album feels more like a personal spiritual journey than something meant to connect with everyone. It’s bold, heartfelt, and important, but also dense and not very welcoming. For many, it's a sacred experience. For others, it feels like being on the outside looking in.
Good enough jazz.
Not for me beyond this listen. It was a good experience, and I bet I could appreciate it deeply as a live performance. Fantastic artistry but doesn't connect with me in an album setting.
Luister ik later🙃
Puf es q tienes q estar en el mood para escucharlo
Great musicianship and did not sound bad, but I don’t see myself returning to this any time soon.
Good one of the better jazz albums ive heard
3.5
3.0
a love supreme
Picks up as it goes along - gorgeous work from the whole band (that drum performance!). Not hearing the spirituality or the 'speaking in tongues' that this record gets compared to - the sax playing sits in the background often and there's enough other stuff going on here to enjoy without the mysticism.
Good solid bit of jazz. Probably needs more than one listen to fully appreciate it but my initial listen was pleasant enough
Jazz!
Ok
Controlled chaos
This is a decent album. I do not listen to a lot of jazz, but there are some good moments in this album when every instruments compliments each other. There are moments, however where it feels like the sax, piano, and drums were all on their own mission to see who can play the loudest and craziest, which at that point was a low on this album for me.
Whilst I can appreciate the technical brilliance of the musicians and the high quality of something recorded 60 years ago jazz is not for me
Very scattered, not much resolution. Not getting the hype
I respect the jazz, but I do not love the jazz. I know this is good, but it’s a lot to listen to as a casual listener.
I have usually liked all the jazz albums on this list, but this one was just okay for me. The music is inherently good, but the solos went on for waaaaay too long.
In high school I joined the jazz band. Not because I liked jazz, or really band, all that much. But jazz band met before school. And that required driving to school and not taking the bus. Which mean that for the whole year, I had an excuse to drive to school. And no senior was going to ride the bus. So forever more, my love for jazz only extends as far as the ability for it to gain me something else. I can drive any time I want now, so my need for jazz is pretty low.
I don't know that I loved it. I like to feel jazz a little more in my body than I felt this. But I wasn't waiting for it to end. 3.5
3/5
I appreciate the artistry.
I'm not a big jazz person, but this was a cool album. It feels like a very complete work. The last track felt the best to me.
Beautiful
380/1001
I can see how someone would like this. I am not that someone.
Classic jazz piano. Love Supreme indeed.
It's ok but sometimes strays too far into jazz masturbation. It's only half an hour though so doesn't overstay it's welcome.
I have to be in the right headspace to listen to chaotic free-form music like this, and today may not have been that day, but I always respect the boundless creativity and musicianship behind it.
I've said before, I'm not a jazz fan. I did actually like this, though I'm not sure I like it enough to give it another play.
I don’t love it but should I? This isn’t my jam man. BUT, for its musical category, it’s good. It really is. The bass lines from song to song really carry you along while Charlie Brown soundtrack music plays over top. And that’s about all I have. It’s jazz. It’s not any type of jazz where you won’t know what it sounds like. I wish there was singing. That’s a knock against this album. But overall it’s enjoyable. It doesn’t hold a candle to the winds chance against rock albums but for its category, I’ll rate it higher than I would if I compared it to rock albums.
Not my favorite jazz, but still good.
Nice to listen to but I just think jazz needs to be seen live to be enjoyed properly ya know?
Not for me
I so very much want to like this.
I almost feel the need to apologise for not ‘getting’ this. I try but I just don’t. I can accept that they are fine musicians but it’s not for me
A good instrumental album, but I forgot what the vibe was like after it ended.
A little too all over the place at times for me. And its my own fault, but it was a terrible album to listen to when you have a thousand tasks at hand and already feel frazzled.
Jazz, paps
Great jazz album dont love jazz though
Not bad. Classic jazz music. But I can’t think of a perfect moment that I could immerse myself into the album. It doesn’t help me focus on my work, neither does it help me feel relaxed. When I tried paying extra attention to the album, it was just not that interesting either..
Okay Johnny take the bass for walk, and when I give you the nod give it Greyhound ticket to Phoenix. Billy the Sticks you keep an eye on the time like your a kid on the last day of school. Raspberry Jones here on the piano is going to blend the ivory and ebony so well all y’all fine folks in the audience will forget there was ever any racial tension in this country to begin with. And Big Al, well Big Al and the Boys you’re gonna do whatever the hell you want anyway so just try not upstage me alright? Alright.
• 3/5 • deeply felt and technically masterful • not especially fond of modal jazz, and the utter lack of repetition or unifying melody or chord progression is impressive but leaves me feeling lost - I think that’s why it doesn’t resonate the way Davis’s Kind of Blue does
6/10
I know this is kind of a seminal jazz album, and I do love jazz, but this doesn’t do a whole lot for me for some reason.
Pretty cool
It's good but it's also jazz so an entire album is a lot. I think if elevator rides were 32 minutes long everyone would turn on each other and the strongest would devour the others by the end, mainly because of having to listen to too much consecutive jazz.
I think I’m running out of ways to state that I don’t care for jazz in these reviews. All these things are the same; I listen to them and retain nothing. Most of them I swear are just noise. If you give me one song from every jazz album that I’ve done and asked me to name what album they come from, I’d drew a blank. I mean, they’re mostly ok, but like it’s become so fatiguing. This was no different, even if this is apparently a masterpiece of jazz. Look, it’s not bad, it’s alright. But as far as I’m concerned, it’s just more of the same. Songs stretched too long and filled with random instrument playing without much synergy. Next album, please. Favorite track: Part IV- Psalm (it sounded the most coherent) Other hits: nothing really else honestly
Starting in the middle of a musical sentence and moving in both directions at once. - John Coltrane... well said.
Jazz but jazz that I enjoyed? I don't have a discerning palette to jazz music
I can see why it is revered but not my vibe.
Hmmm, not his best, maybe I’m not sophisticated enougg
7,5/10 Highlights: I en II
7/10 Highlights I
Too jazzy
A Love Supreme is clearly the work of a brilliant musician at the height of his creative powers. John Coltrane’s technical mastery and emotional intensity shine throughout the album, and there’s no denying the spiritual weight behind the performance. It’s ambitious, deeply personal, and influential — a cornerstone of jazz history. That said, while the musicianship is top-tier, the album doesn’t fully hold up for casual listening. The entirely instrumental format, though impressive, lacks the variety or accessibility that makes some other classic records stand the test of time a bit more easily. For those already invested in jazz, it’s a rewarding experience. But for others, it can feel distant — more of an intellectual achievement than something you’d return to often. A Love Supreme deserves respect for what it is, but it may not resonate as deeply across all listeners or generations
Jazzy jazz. Too chaotic for my personal tastes
There’s no doubt that this is an incredible album musically, it’s a quintessential jazz record from one of the “big 2” of the genre - the other being Miles Davis I’m not a huge fan of Coltrane, in my limited jazz listening I’ve always lent more towards Davis but there’s no denying this is a sonically diverse, at times challenging, listen.
Extremely engaging and grand at times. I appreciate the technicality of this album, but I think I just don’t like jazz. The lack of melodic structure is too bewildering for me, though I can definitely understand how others can fall in love with pieces like this. If I heard and saw this performed live, I probably would. Could also be I’m not accustomed to this kinda music. For the time being, it’s a 7/10 for me. Also found out this album was recorded very close to my office, which is pretty neat.
Just a fine jazz album Low 3/5
I am a long-time confirmed hater of Jazz, but this actually isn't bad. Not something I'd prefer to listen to but nowhere near as grating as most jazz as something playing in the background. Also, the pianist could definitely go.
Interesting
O que posso dizer? É um sólido álbum de Jazz.
It’s jazz
I didn’t have a lot of focus when listening to this Album, but apparently it was one of brads high school favorites. It features jazz music, with saxophone. Brad loved it in his younger years. I will give a 3 for now because I likely won’t revisit it soon, but at least I have these notes so I can play it for Brad when I remember.
Resolution // 3.5/5
A new listening experience. I liked it.
interesting album, no words let the music really shine
point2.
Standard background jazz. Fast enough to be fun. 3/5
This is, so it says, one of the seminal works of jazz. I can listen to it, admire it a bit, and still feel like I'm not quite getting the point. I'm not going to dunk on Coltrane's masterpiece, but jazz is definitely not for me.
long parts
Jazz isn't really my thing. It worked great as background music for me while I did housework, but I wouldn't listen to it outside of it.
i just listened to the first song idk not my thing
Drum solo went hard
cool jazz album. not a big fan of jazz or extra long tracks so probably wont revisit on my own time but it was definitely a fun listen and i can recognize the quality of the music here
Wonderful artistry and skills with only 4 players. It’s just not my type of jazz
Maybe a little too "free" for me but still very cool and a great showcase for Coltrane's sax.
It was nice to listen to. 3.5
Enjoyed the whole album.
Hfgn ggg
Decent but needed longer!
Heard of John Coltrane but not this album. As a Sax (now retired) player myself always keen to listen to John Coltrane as he is one of the greatest ever jazz sax players. He can play and make the sax do things I can only dream about. Despite my sax credentials this type of jazz is not entirely to my liking. But unlike a lot a jazz it is an easy album to get into as there are a few memorable melodies which keep reprising leading to a feeling of familiarity even after one listen. 3/5 3/4/25
not a jazz fellow
My brain doesn't get it, but I can recognize that it's very talented stuff
Not really my bag on this one, jazz is just too full on.
It’s good jazz but I’m not that into it
Jazzy fun. Not something I'd listen to on a regular basis, but I can see why people who are into this type of music enjoy Coltrane. Very talented musician, just the wrong genre for me to appreciate as much as I otherwise could. Overall: 3/5
Cool sax bro
Meh. Expected a little more from this album from what I've heard from Coltrane. 3/5
I appreciated this album but it wasn't my favorite. The blend of jazz and orchestral elements was interesting, but I prefer a more gritty jazz.
Really good drum solo at one point
It is a good album but I think I am too stupid to understand/gel with jazz. Overall, I think I liked Pt. III - Pursuance the most. I'm not going to pretend like I 'get' it, nor would I reach for this over other albums I own if it were on my shelf. Wouldn't complain if I heard it at someone else's house or in a restaurant though.
i’m not a huge jazz guy but this was chill
This is actually my 3rd favorite Coltrane record - I thought its religious undertones makes some aspects of it too dissonant for my tastes. Blue Train and Ascension are better.
Instrumental jazz album, sounds like standard jazz to my ears? Best track - Pt. II - Resolution
Very interesting. I liked parts, but it was a little too random for me. There were times when all the instruments lined up and it was beautiful, but then at others, it seemed like only one or two musicians were playing together. I wasn't a huge fan on the first listen but gave it another chance. I like the first part of Resolution where the sax, drums, and base seem to be together, but the piano seems to be doing his own thing, and then again toward the end.
3.5 - some good ol jazz. Part 4 was the best
Fine for jazz i guess
I know that this is a very important and revered album which is why I feel like I should love it, but unfortunately I didn’t. It’s a bit “proper grown up” jazz for me and I just don’t really get it… However, saying that I did enjoy it just not as much as the world expects me to.
Not my type but sounds good
This was good, but it also totally stressed me out
fine but too freewheeling for an album imo. this would be great live I'm sure but has very little structure
Ye olde keyboard smash
Legendary Jazz... I'm still not well versed in the Jazz world, but I do enjoy it when I hear good jazz (and this is good jazz).
I like this, but it's a bit background? Like, it takes a lot for jazz to be more than background for me, especially jazz this free, but it's good some good soundscapes.
It's free jazz, you very much know what you're going to get out of it as you go in - I'm a fan if jazz generally, and this was fine, nothing to blow your socks off though in my opinion.
It has been a very jazzy month. Had high hopes and I kept relistening to the first track but never found my mind taking in much of the rest of the album. I need a break from jazz.
I'm gonna seem like an uncultured luddite here, but I just don't really get this style of jazz. I'm not going to say it's bad or anything -- these are obviously great musicians -- but, it's not something I'm really ever gonna go out of my way to listen to. Now that I've outed myself as a Philistine, I'm just gonna go 3 stars and try to be better tomorrow.
My favorite Jazz song of ALL TIME EVER is Olé (1962) by John Coltrane. That said, I've listened to other albums by Coltrane and have yet to discover anything as fabulous as Olé which (sadly) is not the album we are listening to. A Love Supreme. This is really complex jazz but it's a bit over my head. I can appreciate it, but mostly it sounds like the drums are falling over themselves and the song structures don't really gel. Makes it feel sort of scattered and all over the place. If I listened to this about 20 times I think some of it might actually start to sink in. It definitely has it's moments and I enjoy his expressive sax playing.
Oh jazz, I long to love you. Every time we get a super famous jazz musician, I'm hoping THIS will be the one that makes me fall hard for the genre. But alas, despite the obvious talent, this just sounds like a long jam session that doesn't really take me anywhere special. It's cool and chill and good Monday vibes though.
I like this album because it reminds me of dining in an Italian restaurant. I like the instrumental and not a big fan of the no lyrics still but its chill. I recommend this album.
Song: Acknowledgenment* this song is perfect for valentines day and it reminds me of a snowy day and there outside maybe outside of new York and there playing the saxaphone* Song: Resolution i like it because it would be perfect for a crime scene in a movie but make it a little dimmer and echoing so it could be scarier and creepy during that movie scene you can do a bunch of things with this song and at the end it gives me charlie brown vibes at the end
the first song is silent with only jazz there is not much to say about it its kinda good. the next song is kinda the same. the third song is still the same. overall I would maybe recommend it.
I thought this album was okay. "Acknowledgment" sounded nice. I like the instrumentation and the notes from the saxophone. "Resolution wasn't bad either. I liked all the rythems and instrumentation. Overall I liked this album. I thought it was pretty good. I would give it a solid 3.5 out of ten only because it doesn't have any lyrics. I would reccomend this to anyone who likes music with out lyrics.
Good jazz but nothing id be playing myself.
Not a big fan of random notes.
Love me a bit of Coltrane. This was good not quite 4 or 5 though
