Reviews (page 10 of 14)
Solid little jazz number 6/10
Good
It's a great work of art. It just isn't to my taste. It does feel almost classical in a way. A bit too much of a good thing somehow? I really like a Coltrane song. I'm just not sure I need a whole album at once?
HIT ME ~~HARD~~ SOFT AND SOFT (It didn't hit me that hard) Edit: changing to a 3 on Oct 5 2025, I like jazz a bit more now
Jazzy jazz I wish I liked jazz more :( I need more instruments :(((
woke me up
Another one that I think would be amazing live, but not something I really want to listen to as an album. 3
Appreciate the artistry. Somewhat disparate from other reviews, I found that each musician was on their on groove but they all met in the middle. It was chaotic and harmonic.
I've tried listening to this numerous times now, but I seemingly always get distracted and it ends up being background noise. It's good and all though.
I love this album. Blasting power from Jazz
Good melody, 3rd song bad stereo
To me, it sounds like all the players are playing different things. Somehow it works but I don’t love it.
Jazz is hard man.
A Love Supreme! A Love Supreme!
I am going to rate this as a good album even though it did not do anything for. I've never cared for improvisational jazz. It just seems like everyone is doing their own thing. It's a cacophony of instruments to me. But in the end, it's Coltrane and the musicianship is undeniable.
Not a jazz fan, lo risentirò
I mean, this is A Love Supreme we're talking about here
Not bad
My enjoyment of jazz is growing as I get older (elder millennial here). I still don't love the over indulgent wanking that is the typical improvised solo, but that bass solo in Part III 👌👌👌
Not at all my type of music but it's very good
This list is giving me some exposure to jazz classics which until venturing into the list I have had little or no experience listening to. This record has excellent musicianship but is a touch chaotic for my tastes. I think I tend toward smooth jazz but I will revisit this album in the future. My favotite track here is "Psalm".
Sax arpeggios
Jazz Saxophon First: 2/5 Again? 4/5 (Durchaus interessant - braucht vielleicht mehrere Durchgänge)
Good jazz Easy to see why “masterpiece” Everything flows well
I have been a fan of the little Coltrane I was familiar with in the past, but I couldn’t get behind this. Great musicianship, but I didn’t feel the soul, personally. Most likely a me problem.
Classic jazz album
It was ok
Jazz...just jazz. 3/5
I liked listening to this, a bit noodly though
Yep its a jazz album
Smooth.
Slay.
Liked it but docked a star because one song in the middle gave me anxiety.
JAzz. Ion fuh with jazz really atleast not jazz music with no lyrics just instruments ain't what I like
"do ya like jazz" no not particularly actually
Better jazz, but still doesn’t jazz me too much.
I mean…it’s jazz. It’s Coltrane. It’s a lot of next level improvisation. Supreme? Hard to say. Impressive still? Of course. But…well…it’s jazz.
Hey daddy-o is that a saxophone in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? This was nice music. 3.25
I listened to this when I went through Apple Music’s best albums of all time gave it a 3. Thought maybe I was too harsh. I mean, it is John Coltrane after all. Naw, still a 3. I just can’t get there with jazz. 3/5
Interesting and enjoyable, but too complex for my everyday listening
John Coltrane: . American jazz artist 1926-67 . Pioneer in the American jazz industry and the history of jazz as a whole . Left a legacy of inspiring musicians across all genres. . In the 1960s he formed a quartet composed of himself, McCoy Turner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones A love supreme thoughts and reflections: 1. A love supreme, pt 1 - Acknowledgement: First song of the album, personally at this point never listened too much jazz but I'm a somewhat fan of this from the opening song, the mix of the bass instruments with the backdrop of one of the band members repeating "a love supreme" gives the opening song a heavy and deep but also a reflective tone to start the album. 2. A love supreme, pt 2 - Resolution: An upbeat tempo starts resolution from the offset, it offers the listener the impression of a high end casino in Vegas in the 1960s, sort of thing you'd expect to hear while a heavy scent of tobacco lingers in the air, alas you could say that about every piece of jazz ever I imagine. The second peice of jazz is characterised by a bass instrument with a backing of a piano/ keyboard perhaps the afformentioned McCoy Turners work pulling through on the piece. 3. A love supreme, pt 3 - Pursuance: Heavy drum sound on this third piece perhaps it helps to set the undertone of the piece, as the piece plays on there is the introduction of a piano which overtakes the piece of music very energetic not as slow as the first piece. - In the end I didn't finish this and I am unlikely to return to it. This stems from a place of not having too much background knowledge on jazz works and maybe in the future I could return to it with a new appreciation for the art.
Smooth!
Calming yet lively Predictable as water Outpouring of jazz
Hard to rate a genre that isn't one of my favorites. Certainly respect that a musicianship, overall not something I would seek out later.
Fairly accessible to a non-jazz-lover
Quite intense for the early morning. Will revisit.
McCoy Tyner's piano is the best part of this album. Not as difficult to listen to as his other albums, but I don't understand the big deal about Coltrane.
I’ve always been a little lukewarm about this album. Seems wrong to say, but I love the rest of the band more than Coltrane.
Jazz album
An amazing Jazz classic, but just not something I would listen to very often
Yes?
3.5
Very… jazz. Not really my thing but interesting
I don't know much about jazz, but seemed like a good seamless flow.
Technically good but just not my thing
Very nearly lulled me to sleep on the bus.
Not sure I really understand?
5/10…free Jazz / bepop
Got exactly what I wanted, good album.
I wanted to love this, mainly because I think it'd make me intelligent, but I just couldn't.
Context is everything. If I'm chilling in a coffee shop or a bookstore, then this is great stuff to have on the overhead speakers. But other than that, I can take it or leave it. Also, I prefer the trumpet to the saxophone. The sax has become a bit of a cliche.
I can enjoy some free-form Jazz, but after a few listens this one didn't land for me. Not bad—not by a long shot—but it didn't suck me in, and it just became background music while I worked on something else. It's not something I expected of something from a legend like Coltrane.
I continue to be unable to fully appreciate jazz, and today I realized it's at least in part due to how I listen to the albums on this list: while working, usually. This is usually a detriment for albums where the *lyrics* are a big part of the draw, but I think it's also a problem for jazz despite the lack of lyrics. Jazz can be fine as background music, but it can probably only be appreciated at a 4 or 5 star level if you're really paying attention to it. A few times during this album, I'd devote attention to it and think "oh, that was a nice little ditty in the middle of this 8 minute track" but then the rest of it would just be pure background noise. I didn't dislike any of this, but I also don't think I'd like it enough to just sit and listen to it.
Some of this music really pulls you in.
Jazz. Pleasant to listen to. Would make a good soundtrack.
Look - I'm sure listening to this makes me 11% more intelligent.
Best wel nice jazz
Not a fan of Jazz, but this was a nice relaxing listen 3/5
Too highbrow for me! Undoubtedly proficient, and a fine example of its genre, but I prefer the sort of jazz that has a nice smoky vocal over the top and/or makes me want to dance/smooch (sorry for that cringey word), rather than just nodding earnestly while Bob* indulges in a drum solo and a sax squawks in random fashion. It has to be a 3 for sheer proficiency, but I didn't enjoy it. *this may not actually be his name
Not bad, just not really my thing. "Just play the notes!"
nothing like a little jazz to brighten up the day. this one is very listenable and i found myself a toetappin’ on more than one occasion during this listen.
I don't really get the substantial appeal of jazz like this. It simply sounds like randomly generated notes, you know? When someone tells me they like this kind of jazz I just think they're an elitist who wants to convince themselves they are cooler than you.
I enjoyed this. When I need lyric-less music in the future I hope to return to it (I'll be able to ignore the few repetitions of "a love supreme" in the first track). I can't claim that I fully get this yet, but I enjoyed a first exposure. I would be very proud of myself if I could evolve into being a Coltrane guy.
Incredible musicianship, just pretty chaotic to listen to, not sure if it's for me.
Jazz is fun, but wasnt in love with this album
It's jazz, what can I say. I'm not supposed to get it.
One of the most important jazz albums ever made Or..... The sound of people all playing different songs at the same time in varying time signatures. Both can be true.
Good
I don't like traditional jazz, so not my thing. The rating given is for the genius of John.
I own it on vinyl
Don't really know anything about Jazz so don't want to knock this album however does seem highly repetitive. Kind of music that would definitely add to the ambience of a restaurant but can't see myself going somewhere specifically to see this being played.
Decent album.
I’m sure this is a 3 - listened to half of each song and tapped out. Call me an iPad kid but I can’t just sit and listen to jazz without it fading into the abyss that is my cavernous brain
Smooth and polished jazz. The album itself is a full story, really it's one 30-minute song. I wish I had a greater appreciation for jazz, but, alas, I don't and was mostly indifferent to this one. I didn't dislike it, it certainly didn't feel like a chore to listen to it, but it was ultimately just pretty background music as I went about my morning. I would like to listen to this again at some point!
I'm just not a big jazz guy. This was a decent listen. John Coltrane is amazing. I'll give it some extra stars because I know he's awesome, even though I didn't really enjoy it.
This sounds like what having anxiety feels like. A bunch of sounds all going a million miles an hour in different directions at the same time. My appreciation for jazz is still growing, so this was a bit chaotic for me. But I can tell it's good, even though I'm not all in yet
It is jazz. I don't know much about jazz. It's perfectly good background music but because it's jazz and I was doing other things I can't tell apart the songs. They're also all between 7-11 minutes. I'm gonna go listen to some JVB or something to cleanse my palette. I think if you had to press me for my favourite song it'd be Resolution. Psalm is too slow and Pursuance is too long. Acknowledgement is also there.
this cat's really putting it down
Du beau jazz reste du jazz
I still don't know what to make of this. I'm not a fluent jazz listener, this is all new to me. At a loss about whether or not I like this. Resolution and Psalm were my favourite tracks. The saxophone feels prominent in both songs - in resolution it is fierece and solemn. In Psalm, the sax is rather more melancholic and brooding. Songs felt long but as an overall album it's short. Tight. Feels like I'm drowning in notes of music! The story behind the album is interesting as well. Torn between a 3 or 4 for this.
Idk, just didn't really grab me. Maybe it was the sound, maybe it was just a bad day. Either way. 2.5/5
This is another one I'm going to have to listen to multiple times and in the right mood. It's promising, but I get the sense it's a grower - I'll enjoy it more with a few late-night listens, when I can really focus on the twists and turns.
I liked the part where they start saying “a love supreme” 100 times right at the end of the first track, didn’t expect that Not the biggest fan of jazz but I like that it isn’t overly complicated or trying to be, it has a nice groove Good music to do nothing to, to think to, to do a random activity to Last track was real good!
Love Supreme - pizza- really a 2.5 too hectic
This was pretty intense, but I enjoyed it.
I really want to like, no, love classic jazz like this. I have tried many, many times. I get that it's good music. I like all the elements ... but there is something that doesn't quite click. I found this all a bit claustrophobic, somehow? There's a lot of stuff crammed in at times, musicians all being individually brilliant ... but at the same time. It's almost too much for my brain to unpack, and becomes a bit uncomfortable to listen to. So the 3 is my rating. I totally get why it's really a 5. But it's my list, not yours.
I am discovering jazz as I get old. This is quite intense and difficult for me as a newb but I like it. I like the way it starts of disjointed and rapid and by the last part it has become, particularly in the sax more of a plaintive soul crying out. Needs more listens on my long journey, but it's a fundamental of post war jazz.
The musicianship is great and the influence on music on the whole is undeniable, but jazz really does nothing for me.
I guess it's kinda nice for background music, but jazz is just not my thing. It's not bad; it just is.
Appreciate the artist. Album not for me
3.5
Like fine wine - in that I really don't understand it.
I don't know much about jazz, but I know what I like, and I like this. Not too edgy and a-melodic to be accessible. I would listen again.
Sweet. Nice. Jazz. It just flowed by me. Gossamer musical intensity.
Well, that was certainly jazz. Not my favorite, but not bad.
The album that Jazz Club on The Fast Show is based on. Great. Really great.
I liked it all right. I'm not a jazz guy but I liked this one much better than that Mungus one,
I’m just not a big fan of jazz
I liked this better than most jazz albums, but I still have a hard time fully getting into it.
Gear: Fostex TH610 Artwork: >9000🆒 Mix: 🎧😘🤌 Musik: Jazz Jazz Jazz!
Another jazz album that's pleasant to listen to but ends up becoming background music for me.
Big fan of Coltrane but this isn't my fave album of his by a long shot.
I usually enjoy Coltrane but some of the songs were a little too screechy for me
Just instrumentals but ok
Not my kind of jazz
I can admire the technical ability of this album, but it did nothing for me from an entertainment standpoint. Glad it was only 30 minutes.
I have mixed feelings about jazz. not something i really enjoy listening to through headphones. i prefer it on sunday mornings, in the backdrop.
I'm not really a jazz person, but it was interesting listening to this and hearing such an influential album!
to much jaaazzi for me
The musicianship is unquestionable. More of a criticism of me, really, but I felt on the cusp of understanding the music, but I may be too stupid to fully appreciate jazz. It was an enjoyable listen, though.
good
Liked it but liked the other jazz album more, though I am not a jazz hater
3 feels high but 2 feels too low.
For all his allocades I didn't get it. Dissonance was too much
No my favorite jazz album, but there are certainly moments of brilliance. Part II is my favorite.
I’m pretty picky with my jazz and it’s probably bc I’m a dumb person in general. It sounded fine but I couldn’t imagine going to a live set and just being all stoked to be there bc they’re just kinda playing notes and I’m not gonna just stand around watching that. Pretty decent stuff though. 3.5 stars
The talent of the artists involved is evident. This genre of jazz is tough for me. I always feel like the performers are having more fun than I am.
Loved the jazz sound, a little heavy on the drums. 3
A little to 'out there improvisational jazz' for me; I often wonder if these are songs that could be performed again or if they're one off performances, like a modern synth jam. It was OK for in the background, with a few moments that raised it to a 3.
I went from damn I love the sound of a good sax . To that’s enough sax, thank you.
Some interesting Jazz influences that I almost recognize
part 2 is my fav
Not a Coltrane fan but it's pretty good. High 3.
Solid
I put on while making dinner and enjoyed the listen. Did seem a little disjointed at times but a good jazz album by a jazz master.
A much more entertaining jazz album than the last jazz album I heard on here. I enjoyed it
I love jazz but I’ve really struggled to connect with this one for some reason
I love the sound, love the idea, but cannot get into free jazz except as something completely background. It frustrates me that I can't hear a distinctive melody or progression. I get why free jazz freaks would love this though.
For a non-jazz person such as myself, this was actually okay! I can see why it's such a staple of the genre.
I know this is a classic jazz album. I couldn’t make it through all the way. I’m going to give it another listen tonight.
Coltrane is a great musician, but a half hour of uninterrupted jazz instrumental is a bit much for me. The whole thing is just 4 songs too. 6/10 Would I listen again? Maybe as background noise.
I'm realizing some things about jazz. I prefer piano to sax. And I can get down with jazz fusion, but this stuff - although important - might not be for me. Moments I appreciated: the piano driven middle section in Resolution, the drum intro to Pursuance and lightning quick piano bit after that. Less compelling: the unaccompanied bass solo outro on the same track. ** 1/2 but rounded up on artistic merit.
Whatchu no bout Coltrane
6/10 I like some of the melancholy runs. It relaxed me. some of the runs were just noise to me but I'm not a jazz fan. Of all the jazz I've heard this was pretty listenable 4-2-2024
feels like the city, feels like being a man, complexity, feels cool, feels like feelings
Was okay. Too much impro, but it’s jazz, yeah.
First album - thanks to Avi Schwab for the link to this site!
Good I guess? Maybe I'm a caveman but
Solid but unmoving jazz album
I like it but it's generally busier than I like jazz to be.
I’ve tried, I just don’t get jazz. Everyone knows Coltrane is highly regarded so I don’t want to rate low so going middle of the road 2.5/5
So, I'll concede, I just don't get jazz. I know Coltrane is supposed to be the master, but this sounds like every other jazz thing I've heard. Obviously the musicianship is tremendous - these guys are professionals. But why is this better than any other jazz album? I listened to it twice just to see if I missed something on my first pass. It's good background music, I guess? But only in a coffee shop or something, because they go too hard with the horns to listen to this while studying or anything like that. I'll give it a 3 because I know I'm missing the point, so I don't want to go lower. It's not you, John Coltrane, it's me. But it's just not gonna work out.
I feel like I just had to be there, man 3.1/5
Back to time where music wasn’t so sterile and packaged. Jazz is not for everyone, but this a great album. A glass of very good whiskey would go well with it.
jazz is jus cooler when its live
I had heard the name lol Some pretty epic jazz on this album. Im typically more interested in smooth/easy jazz, but I enjoyed Contrane's talent-filled tunes. Look forward to more!
Good overall jazz album. I like Jazz, but I don't find myself going there very often.
I wonder if the failing is mine. I can agree that my childhood ineptitude for sport meant that I developed no comprehension of strategy in football, and so a whole vista to the game remains hidden from me. More relevantly, a contemporary appreciation of opera requires some investment, some education in how to appreciate it: you shouldn’t expect a nine-year-old to sit rapt through Tristan und Isolde. Even more relevantly, the musicianship of jazz, the focus on technique perhaps leaves it incomprehensible to those unable or unwilling to discuss the use of non-harmonic arpeggios. But I’ve tried to appreciate jazz. I’ve been to a jazz festival. I had a Miles Davis poster on my wall at uni. I even had this album. But this album, apparently one of the two most celebrated jazz albums (along with Kind of Blue), just isn’t jiving with me. It’s not sweeping me away, rendering me agog, flummoxing me with the power of its logic or leaving a cascade of butterfly kisses down my throat. It’s just some people playing instruments well. That’s all I can say. Yes, “playing instruments” is the most reductive definition one can give to all music, but a focus on technical displays often leads to chilliness. The shredded guitar solo, the Whitneyesque wooahooahooahoos, the jazz saxophonist demonstrating his knowledge of the seven diatonic modes: all are liable to leave the listener with frostbitten eartips. Maybe I should get some musical earmuffs, but right now, I just can’t be arsed. Oh, one thing that rankled with me: the constant claims to spirituality made about this album. The liner notes to A Love Supreme include a devotional poem, and the final movement Psalm has Coltrane playing the words on the sax, if you will. I am in no way a spiritual man. Spirituality is hokum, and all too often the mask of a con artist. So maybe there’s another layer to this which I don’t get. Still, permit me to reject the retort that my lack of full appreciation for A Love Supreme indicates I’m dead inside. I mean, I do appreciate the Happy Mondays, and that’s got to hint at the vestiges of some form of internal life, right? Writing about jazz is the fucking worst. Honestly, this only about 500 words and I’m absolutely exhausted. There is nothing interesting to write about jazz. Plenty of mates of mine say listening to jazz is the most boring experience conceivable, but I have my trusty counterexample and I ask them if they’ve ever tried to write about jazz. I need to come up with a stock response for jazz albums. Is writing about jazz the only function an AI’s good for? Ask it to bash out 500 words while I listen to something that genuinely inspires me. I’ve actually grown a little resentful of A Love Supreme, just because attempting to write about it is maddening. A Love Supreme? I’m feeling A Peevishness Lowly. NoRadio, signing off.
I get it. I just am not interested in jazz.
TPAB
Cacophonous at times, but very good instrumentally.
Nice enough, but it just sort of noodles along. I imagine this could be a significant jazz album, but as I'm not a jazz aficionado that passes me by. 3/5
Gillar ändå jazz mer än jag tror
Is 3 the highest a jazz album can get?
Beautifully done, a pleasure to listen to.
Good for background listening but still jazz!
Good
Jazz
I like my jazz with energy. And this album does a decent job of delivering that.
That's not my taste in musik. But ok
Honestly, if this was distorted guitars and the like it would be just called noise
- Solid jazz, nothing much to say - Appreciate the short length
Smooth jazz is as smooth jazz does
I thought it was pretty good when I listened to it, but I've completely forgotten it now by review time.
If you love jazz, this is a powerful example of John Coltrane's work. Even if you don't love jazz, this makes for good background music at a social event. Scale: 5 - My absolute favorites. 4 - Albums I like. 3 - It was ok to listen to but I wouldn't seek it out. 2 - Didn't like. 1 - Absolute shit.
Great music, didn't love the channel mixing.
3.4/5 Best Track: A Love Supreme, Pt. III - Pursuance
Its all very impressive, but lets face it, its a jam session
Second song is definitely my favorite. Not my style, but I appreciate the artistry.
Fantasic album, but instrumental jazz is not my jam. Clearly skilled musicians, especially the drummer. Song 3's drum solo was very impressive.
An interesting cycle of jams, which I enjoyed, but I get why many people would consider it annoying. As I listened, I was more focused on the piano and bass, which really revealed the unique chord progressions they employed. If any of these tracks came up in a random jazz playlist I would definitely listen again, but I likely wouldn’t seek out the album to listen to it in its entirety again.
I've never been into jazz but can see why this would be an important album for that genre.
Coltrane gets weird in all the right ways. This one took me to another place and time. Very brain stimulating.
Funky
Chill, didn’t fit my current work day, would be fun to listen to live, reminded me of Daniel
Good musicians, but it didn't engage me emotionally.
Very musically talented, but jazz isn't for me. I don't understand it or why it's good.
Fortunately, I WAS high enough to appreciate this album. At least in terms of jazz music. A lot of it felt like I was watching Jackie Brown or some blaxploitation film, but a man can only handle so much jazz at once. If I’m ever in the mood for this genre I’ll just go watch Whiplash or something.
Cool Jazz. Far away from smooth bar Jazz.
3.1/5
Something I would never have sought out.
Good album, if you like jazz. If you don't find yourself enjoying jazz, you might as well skip it because you will definitely find it boring. Had its moments, but not enough to leave me wanting for more. I might have to do a second listen.
I don't have much experience with Jazz. I feel like it is something that plays in the background. All in all not bad.
Not interested
Good stuff
Jazz isn't a genre I usually listen to. However I persisted with Love Supreme and I enjoyed it.
Blessedly short.
Good bath listen. But suppose it’s just not my cup of tea.
3/5 stars because the instrumentals are absolutely excellent, one ti8ng that stuck out to me was the really nice drum sounds in the background I would of liked a bit more vocals, but it almost doesn't need it as they are spoken through the saxophone work, pleasantly surprised as I don't really listen to jazz
Nice, I like Pt. III - Pursuance with the drums
Was my first jazz album I ever listened to and it was great music to write with but I wouldn't sit down and stop what I was doing to listen to it (jazz might still grow on me though so maybe in a few months I would rate it higher) so overall 3.2/5
More than 3, near 3.5. Good in Jazz perspective
expected to listen this more
Jazzzzzz
Not something I'd listen to, but it was fine as background music.
Cacophonous
Was slay:)
not normally acquainted with jazz but found this quite relaxing from a beginners perspective. also after relistens felt that it was more impactful than usual as mostly instrumental music goes. average rating was due to the fact that the genre is not my personal favourite but i recognise why it can be influential
Very classy but more study music
Sounded noisy, was starting to get in on 3rd (high) listen. Will have to revisit.
Really amazing sax solos
coltrane is great but the sax is not my fave instrument. It's hard for me to sit through sax solos which is basically this entire album.
Scatterbrained.
Not too bad save for the freeform sections eliciting madness
This is a genre in which I attempt to find calm. The first track made me anxious, but the rest felt really nice. Easy record, straight to the point and pretty enjoyable.
I can tell that this is good jazz. I just don’t love jazz. But it doesn’t get better than Coltrane.
A four track album that runs under 35 minutes got my attention. Pressed play... and I liked it. The vibe goes from chill to frantic then a slow, rousing coda. One or more of these tracks is something that would suit a lazy Sunday morning or while cooking dinner. Overall: 7/10
Not a genre I know much about, but I liked the music.
Good Jazz Record! John Coltrane def one of the greatest Jazz Musician! 3.5/5
6/10
I really didn't care
Jazz. Interesting, a little chaotic.
Good jazz.
3-3.5 It’s an album I could listen to on repeat, partially because it’s performed well, but mostly because there isn’t any part of any song that is that memorable and sticks.
I wonder if the festival is named after this album? I’m presuming so! I’m alright with Jazz but not particularly excited by it. 3/5 - because not bad, but not so excited by Jazz to add it to my library.
Its jazz, John Coltrane is goated tho
Good, but I'm not much of a jazz man.
It’s jazz
There's a part with crazy saxophone, a part that sounds like Peanuts music, a part with some nice drumming. The rest just washed over me. It's fine jazz, a genre I don't really "get" like some people do. Favorite track: I like drums, so Pt. 3: Pursuance.
Really enjoyed this
Known before: no. Standouts: /
#1 - Pretty good actually. I'm not a huge fan of jazz, but I can see the appeal of people who like it in music like this. The chanting of 'a love supreme' at the end was a nice touch. #2 - Piano playing was excellent here. Good quality - and I mean this with all the nicety I can muster - background music. It's a level above 'I didn't hate it' and 'decent'. Enjoyable. #3 - The drum roll was really good. The cello (?) section at the end here too was nice. #4 - The title for this part 'Psalm' seems appropriate. I'm not a big fan of jazz and try to understand it, but I don't think it's for me. That being said, this was a nicely done album and I enjoyed parts of it. I guess if you like jazz you'll love this? It's a 3 for me.
Not a jazz fan, makes me feel like i'm in a hotel
I've never understood the hype on this one and I still done. The emperor does have on clothes. Each musician is in top form in this quintet and there are some truly fantastic moments. The drum solo kicking off Pursuance, the solo bass ending Acknowledgement and starting Resolution, and the vocals on Acknowledgement are all worth the price of admission. But none of it really works for me as a whole. The ideas develop sporadically and feel forced at times. The playing is disjointed within the ensemble. There is not a single line from Coltrane himself that feels like a thesis or expanded idea. It lacks so much in structure that I just don't have any anchor to care about where they take me. Are we returning to a status quo or have we changed? Do we yern for something more or are we satisfied. I've read the liner notes but from the music, fuck if I know. Psalm is the only track that feels like an actual moving piece of music and it just comes too little too late to make this piece feel meaningful. Don't get me wrong. This is great music but I never understood this as Coltranes masterpiece. It's not Blue Note or even Impressions. It sure as hell isn't Giant Steps. I was really hoping this listen would be the one where I get it, but I just don't.
Very good album, relaxing and great whilst working. I listened to some more songs by John and liked them even more.
I guess it's godlike jazz or something. I just have a hard time getting into classic jazz in general, not really my vibe but I can appreciate the skills
Not a jazz fan, but understand the craft involved.
Sounded hectic and chaotic to my untrained ear. Seemingly no melodies. As of a band of elite level musicians got together spontaneously to improve an album.
It's good, have listened to it several times before. Have to be in the mood for it, as it is not the most accessible listen.
I'd definitely listen again for the sax and the piano. I felt the drums were a bit too chaotic for me too often. I'm also just not really into drum solos. The bass solo was a welcome change after the chaos though. Part IV felt disjointed dispite being more calm.
Its jazz buts thats not a deal breaker, the first song is very high tempo jazz probably wont add this song to any playlists. After reading about the artists it integrates me that he made the album for god, kinda cool.
3/5. All jazz starts to become similar to me. The only differences being the tempo and instruments used. I did very much enjoy the numerous drum solos within this quick and tidy album.
listened to album
Jazz
Pretty cool
Not his best album but good blast from the past.
Instrumental, good to have it. 3
Jazz on level 10.
Very interesting, I've always wanted to listen to this! As jazz goes, it is on the more palatable end for me. Quite enjoyed it and well worth either a high 2 or a low 3.
Pretty nice
I’d heard of John Coltrane but never listened to him before. I had no idea it would be instrumental saxophone-led jazz. It was alright! I couldn’t really get too into it but I didn’t mind it.
I love jazz but Coltrane isn’t my favourite and this isn’t his best album. Not bad.
not bad, but music without lyrics that isn't upbeat doesn't hold my attention for very long
Like a lot of jazz albums, seem to start off great before descending into a bit of boredom. The solos in tracks 3 and 4 dragged on far too long. First two were alright. 2.5*
Definitely cool but also hard to understand. This is awesome jazz, but also so far away from the typical pop structure that it can be hard to fully get into a groove with it. I would definitely listen again, but I doubt I'll seek it out.
This was cool, I tried to put more of my attention into it to understand jazz. There's this really good bit on the third track. I wouldn't usually listen to this, but the skill is still definitely there.
I enjoyed listening to this one, but overall, instrumental jazz is not my genre of choice and I probably won’t revisit it.
Great album, loved the feeling
Good background music, but not something I would remember to intentionally put on.
Jazzy and enjoyable
1/4, 25%
It grows on me every listen. Coltrane was def cooking something up on this one, still don't know exactly what it is though
Thought i was gonna hate re-listening to this album, but tbh it’s not bad. very nice to toss on whilst working
Beautiful album for jazz, but not something i really love to listen to on repeat. I would respect to watch live but not really more, and thats hard to say
Good jazz 3.5
This was good but I suspect my aural palate needs a bit of training on jazz...
In this project I have had to reevaluate my appreciation for jazz as I have heard so many incredible albums that I have truly enjoyed. Sadly, this wasn’t one of them. Perhaps I missed something. I read all the praise for this album but I didn’t hear what they did. I will say that I thought Part 4 was quite beautiful, but it took a while to get there.
I was looking forward to this one as I know it's widely regarded as Coltrane's masterpiece. I can appreciate the musicianship on display for sure. Every member clearly a master of their instrument. I think it's just my relationship with jazz in general but when the pieces drift apart or delve into atonal sound, I enjoy it less overall. Maybe after subsequent listens I will warm to it more.
first time listening
I don’t enjoy jazz. It was very honky in the beginning, but got tolerable.
Nice cool sax
Jazz is hard for me to rate. There are to many doodledtdoos on this for me to really enjoy it. But that doesn't mean it's bad.
Jazz 🕴️
A cruisy listen on a relaxed Saturday afternoon. Some nice jazzy sax.
