Reviews (page 11 of 14)

I'd like to like this music more than I do, but the wild note choices Coltrane goes for in a lot of his music sounds more miss than hit to me.

I know this is a classic but I prefer Coltrane's quieter music.

pretty good for jazz definitely something that I could imagine myself zoning out to 3.5

Yea nice enough

Quite special this one. Not easy listening, but with interesting great elements

It's a nice album to have on in the background, something that you'd be cooking to. Final song on the album is great.

Not bad but got a bit jarring towards the end

Hell yes. Classic.

enjoyable enough

Was okay. Don't remember much of the melodies. Heard before. A love supreme A love supreme A love supreme A love supreme

Very nice, just as I expected.

This kind of music makes me nervous. I understand the poetry and fascination but I really need to skip this one. One track is enough.

John Coltrane's A Love Supreme is like the Energizer bunny of jazz albums - this dude just keeps on going and going! I mean, seriously, the way Coltrane's saxophone just spirals and spirals, you can practically feel the energy coming off the record. It's like he found the musical equivalent of the Fountain of Youth and just never looked back. And what's even more impressive is that this album was recorded in a single session. Can you believe it? One moment, Coltrane's just noodling around on his horn, and the next he's blowing minds with one of the most iconic jazz albums of all time. So if you're looking for a musical pick-me-up that'll keep you going all day (or night), look no further than A Love Supreme. John Coltrane's got the magic touch, and he's not afraid to use it!

Supreme

I was so bored listening to this I’m sorry I know that probably hurts your soul.

Accomplished but not for me

ok. but overrated??

Alright

Technically very good, I unfortunately don’t have the attention span for jazz 😞

I'm not a jazz person so a little hard to comment on this for me. I liked that it was not completely freeform and of course the horns are great, but overall this is background music to me.

Jazz, I feel nothing special about jazz

Coltrane was a master of his craft, but this just doesn't appeal to me.

Hard core jazz, the type of jazz music that made jazz fall out of fashion

First jazz album, very chill and easy to revise to

Good but definitely an active listen

Didn't expect it to be quite so frantic.

Hyvää taustajazzia. En pysty jazzia oikeen kauheesti arvostelemaan muuten kuin että soittaminen on kyllä ihan hullulla tasolla

I'm not a jazz guy. I lack the context of the times when this was released, and I suppose don't appreciate It for what it was at the time. Part IV was pretty good though.

As a smooth-brained popular music enthusiast, I don't know how to listen to this. I've watched a lot of Adam Neely videos, too, and I still can't crack the code.

3.5 Know it well

Is this jazz?

It’s not my kinda thing but was enjoyable and I can’t deny the talent 3/5.

John Coltrane was a jazz saxophonist from the 60's. He got his start as a sideman for Miles Davis before heading out on his own in 1957. Coltrane pioneered a playing technique called "Sheets of Sound", which consisted of a saxophonist playing a flurry of notes on his tenor within the confines of a few chords. A Love Supreme is a dedication by Coltrane to God, as a thank you for blessing him with his gift of music. That being said, there was a very personal, intimate touch to this album. On this record, Coltrane had paired up with bassist Jimmy Garrison, pianist McCoy Tyner, and drummer Elvin Jones. What I enjoy about this record is that each artist is given a solo with which to showcase their skills. The drummer in particular was insanely skilled! Overall, this record wasn't bad. Jazz isn't my favourite type of music, and sometimes it just felt like each artist was playing whatever they wanted, instead of keeping things cohesive like a band should, but even still it wasn't bad. The artistic talent on this album is crazy! Favourite song: A Love Supreme Part 1: Acknowledgement Least favourite song: A Love Supreme Part 3: Pursuance 3/5

Smooth

Nice jazzy album

Could have this music in the background and wouldn’t bat an eye. Not for me in long sessions though

I didnt connect with it, but i generally like jazz so i think i should try it again another time

I hate to say this but not smart enough musically I feel to "get" this one. It works for me as great non-distracting sound in the background, but to sit and listen to it, makes me feel kind of dumb...not getting what is happening here and it is obviously influential. So going very safe and middle of the road scoring on this.

Enjoy the overall vibe, the improvisation and the mad drums. I typically prefer a bit more of an underlying structure.

4 songs that all sound the same, just jazz, not much else to say

Finnish reviewwer.. see translatio belouw..google..kääntäjä.. Musta poika musiikkia.. Jahas.. ALKAA KYLLÄ NIIN HURJAN VAHVASTI! Alkaa pelottaa.. ne mustat pojat.. täytyykö kaikille antaa... täydet pisteet.. tämmöstäkö tämä MUSTA POIKA MUSIIKKI ON!! ainakin nykymaailmassa näyttää olevan näin.. Sitten onneksi.. alkaa olla niin toistokasta.. Kuivaa taitelua.. albumi joka viestii jotain... ei kuuntelualbumia... lauleskellaan saksofonilla jumala (ei kristillinen jumala vaan maailman eri uskontojen jumala -🤓) teemainen runo... Then luckily.. it starts to be so repetitive.. Dry art.. an album that communicates something... not an album to listen to... let's sing on the saxophone god (not the Christian god but the god of different religions of the world -🤓) themed poem ... The lyrics on the back cover of the album.. jaha.. Well, on spotify they can be seen in the video... TECHNOLOGY! I scream.. I screamed... "After a short intro, the bass begins to play the famous Love Supreme pattern, over which Coltrane plays evangelistic melodies that remotely resemble the preaching style of preachers in black churches in the South" "The 'Resolution' section begins with a theme introduced by Coltrane, which follows the theme's developments in the Indian raga music type." "Coltrane begins a solo. He plays variations on the motif until he repeats the four notes thirty-six times. The motif becomes the vocal chant 'a love supreme' " Said in crappy language.. I'll explain... du head dä head du head dä head du head dä head du head dä head du head dä head du head dä head a love Supreme a love Supreme a love Supreme THAT'S HOW IT GOES!

Certainly a masterpiece, but Coltrane's sound can also become a little exhausting.

I still don't know if I can say I like jazz. I'll start to like a song, then they play the same 4 notes 18 times in a row. Oh well.

it was okay, very jazzy. not my type of music but it was still good.

Nice background music. I'm too much of a plebe to appreciate much jazz.

Heretical I know. Not five stars. Not my favourite Coltrane album (Blue Train all the way). It's about this point that the idea of John Coltrane becomes so powerful that it's impossible to judge the music objectively.

Jazz isn’t something I listen at all really, and while I think I like this, I just don’t have the ear to hear what sets this apart from the rest.

I enjoy jazz overall, but only as background music in most scenarios. This was good background music.

Listened to one song, realized what it was trying to accomplish.

Yo where the hell is this lease? Starting to get concerned

good album; easy listening

i enjoy jazz and a love supreme contained covered quite a few subgenres of jazz! it was an enjoyable listen and coltrane was rather talented. but i can't pretend to know and understand jazz enough to hear the subtle aspects for themes, though. for that reason, the album was good but average to me. i have heard other jazz albums on this list i liked much more.

Didn't love it, didn't hate it

I loove supreme luxury brand😍😍

it's good

I thought it was OK. I don't really "get" jazz and I likely never will. I just know what I like and what I don't. I just don't really know how to appreciate the genre I guess. I know it's a classic to many but it's a 3 for me. I don't know what else to say. Sorry, jazz heads?

Pleasant listening but I can't get too excited by this kind of thing.

Great album

Rather a brainy musical experience - definitely not a mellow jazz record. There’s a lot to let your teeth sink into if you’re a muso - if you’re not you’re kind of left behind. Still some stunning musicianship.

I love the title song but really only recognised it towards the end. I appreciate the musicianship but I find this type of jazz all starts to sound the same. It was listenable but that’s all, for me. 2* seems harsh so I’ll go with a low3*

Groovy title riff. Good piano and drums. Movements 1 & 3 seem most accessible. Some of Coltrane’s sax playing feels unfocused. I really only want to hear the Will Downing pop/soul inspired single!

If I loved jazz, I'm sure I would've loved this...

I know this is genius, but I am not into it.

-Actually gets to a solid level of jam with the sax and drums about halfway through "Pt. III - Pursuance" -It is kinda boring for like 15 minutes, then cool for 5, then boring for the next 10. Bad ratio, dude

good jazz. coltrane could be someone I'd listen to more.

Yes I've heard of John Coltrane, and I've heard of A Love Supreme. I don't know if I've ever heard anything by Coltrane before. I know people really admire and love this album, but I don't understand Jazz well enough to hear what others hear. The album was okay, but didn't spark my curiosity.

I am sure that if you are a jazzer, this is fantastic, but it is too dense for my shallow tastes..

Nice to listen to, but I wouldn’t be putting it on often.

Again, felt like I was in a bookstore or coffee house…but every now and again it went a little crazy!

It was nice background music, I didn't mind it.

Probably good but not my style at all.

Babbidy babbidy

To unsettling

Another great jazz classic that I enjoyed, but largely went over my head. Whilst it's beyond doubt that John Coltrane plays his saxophone REALLY well, I'm not musically literate enough to discern the "deep spirituality with religious subtext" from the saxophone tootings and drum clatterings. Having said that I really like Pt.1 - Acknowledgement. The big gong crash at the start and the chanting at the end are really cool. Rating: 3/5 Playlist track: A Love Supreme, Pt.1 - Acknowledgement Date listened: 09/05/22

Just didn't really do it for me. I know he's great. But yeah, it just didn't get me going

Very good jazz. It stretches my taste when listening

More jazz. nice enough

A solid jazz album... Not my thing but was nice background

it's not the season for skitty jazz - but recognise i might like this one season

I wish I liked jazz more. The musicianship is flawless, but I just find the content dull. Please don't take my opinion seriously. This just isn't my kind of thing.

Exceptional horns the whole way through and love the piano on track 2

3.4 - great jazz album with amazing brass and some rocking, if sometimes discordant and settling drums

it's Jazz, It's good. I keep hearing that mantra running through my head... A Love Supreme, A Love Supreme, A Love Supreme... I'm going to ever understand Jazz or what makes this album good compared to other Jazz albums. I do know that I enjoyed this one and I am glad stuff like this is on the list. Maybe someday I will understand Jazz more. 3/5

better Jazz than the other recent albums

Sounded like impressive jazz but definitely background music for me

2/24/22 Good background music and really nothing more. Can’t get into the jazz vibe but I appreciate each song for being a unique piece. Could definitely track a “story” throughout the album.

1965. Acknowledgement

I always like the idea of jazz more than I do actually listening to it. I don't think I'm sophisticated enough for it. This is very easy listening, gentle stuff, but it doesn't really grab my attention.

Trompetistas, saxofonistas y piano. Nada de vocal. Escuchable para un ambiente y entorno íntimo

It’s jazz!

I just don't think I know how to quantify jazz albums.

Try as I might, I just can't get into most jazz. Some jazz (e.g. John Zorn doing the music of Ornette Coleman) I really hate, and some I kinda like. This was somewhere in the middle, probably leaning a bit more to the "I kinda like it" side of the scale. I can definitely appreciate his sax playing, but overall I find it hard to get into. 3 stars.

Jazzzz, afslappende, vild sax, improviseret

Chaotic. It is up to you this is good or not for you.

So to begin, I am not a jazz music listener. Never got into it. So this was an experience. Very interesting, sounds of random chaos that melds together and works well. Enjoyable, but not my cup of tea.

Full disclosure: I'm a punk and indie kid. My exposure to jazz has been limited to the little bursts of jazz guitar lines and polyrhythmic changes in mathcore bands (Dillinger Escape Plan!), what little insipid piano-and-sax tinkles is played in hotel lobbies and, in recent years, BadBadNotGood and Jeff Goldblum (because Jeff Goldblum). So when I began my foray into this recommended work of Mr John Coltrane, whose name I've only read in passing in guitar magazines, I went in with a skeptical mind; one not completely familiar with jazz, but at the same time not without the pockets of exposure to be considered a clean slate. That being said, I am not wholly unimpressed by A Love Supreme. The musicianship is top notch. Exciting, dynamic, technical but emotive. Without any structure or riff to latch on to, I find myself flitting from instrument to instrument, taking in turns the melodically dissonant piano chords, the seemingly chaotic cymbals and syncopated tippy-taps of the snare and of course, the sax work of Mr Coltrane itself. Little wonder of course, that the sum of these far exceed its parts. I am writing this as I give this album my second listen, and while I don't think I will have this in my regular rotation (I am listening to this on YouTube via an incognito Google window, so as not to tamper with my algorithm), I do find that I am the better for having given this album a try. Minor aside : I really didn't like the vocal interjection of "A Love Supreme". It seemed so out of place in what would've otherwise been seamless instrumental interplay.

Too much saxophone action. Would have been a nice album with just the jazz drums and piano. Sorry.

Personally I found this type of jazz to be too fast paced, listening to it was not relaxing or a joyful experience but it felt like one was being rushed and almost stressful. Objectively though it's a good album by a legendary artist so I'm giving this the standard 3 for world/others

First Jazz album on the list. I enjoyed it and would listen again from time to time.

This is repetitive and while I don't hate it, I also don't live it.

i dont understand jazz

I'm in no position to rate this album, so... 3?

first disc is good

Not really my cup of tea. I'm not sure I'm knowledgeable enough on jazz to properly review this album, but I didn't really dig it personally. A bit harsh for my taste. I'd give it 2.5 if I could.

Jazz instrumental. Un poco aburrido.

Incredible, but hectic and not enjoyable per se

I generally prefer Coltrane's earlier work. This is a little more challenging than I want to listen to on a regular basis but the musicianship is undeniable.

Jazzy!

Strano, da risentire.

Well, it’s jazz.

Mmmmmm. Jazz. Niiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Not ready for jazz?

It's fine

Nice jazz album,

Listened three times to this magnum opus now, and oh, how I wish I was more into jazz. This is packed full of great moments from a technical standpoint. The opening minute with the gong, shimmering cymbals and the ensemble slowly coming to life, before the emergence of that four-note bass refrain. The climactic chants towards the end of "Acknowledgement". The drum and double-bass solos that bookend the unhinged "Pursuance". And then the calming influence of "Psalm" with some of the most expressive, yearning sax playing I've ever heard. It all passes by very quickly and each movement is completely distinct, giving an obvious shape to the record. It's very cohesive and tightly focused... I just don't respond to it emotionally. Hearing albums like this, I switch from "excitable-emotive-listener" into "objective-music-historian" mode. It does make me sad that I might never "enjoy" jazz as much as I do pop or rock, but it's impossible for me not to appreciate its craft and significance, especially on repeated listens. Would I know this was a classic in the genre if not being told by this site and many other sources? Maybe not. Does my awareness of its status affect how I perceive it? Almost definitely. I am giving this 3* because even though jazz isn't really for me (yet), the musicianship is almost definitely the best I've heard on this listening journey so far, and probably will be for a long while. Personal preference has to play a big role here, sorry Mr Coltrane! I'm sure you won't be turning in your grave.

Not to my taste

I realize he is an excellent musician. I just find all the high notes he plays on the sax to be grating so I can't really enjoy it.

Annie bought me this record for Christmas a couple years ago. It's enjoyable. That's the only criteria I really put on jazz music. I often put it on when we have guests and want something that will melt into the background. Still love the chanting of "A love supreme!" Never gets old.

not a massive Jazz fan but this was ok

Love John Coltrane. This is not my favorite from him.

Impressive, but not something I particularly enjoy listening to.

I’m not much of a jazz fan so it’s hard to rate the album I will say that the musicians are very talented but it’s not something I would listen to again 3/5

Not for me but jazz is impresive so

A master of his craft, his craft can be a little inaccessible.

best jazz offering we've had on this list (sorry spazzjazz).

*a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme*

i'm not very much into Jazz

Very impressed by the musicianship. The fourth track didn't land with me at all, but the rest was solid.

Short album, would need to listen some more. Definitely felt more like a 60s album while still being Jazz

Although I usually don't like jazz, I though this album was OK.

Great if you like jazz I guess. Good background stuff

Grande coltrane

As with Monk before him, not hugely into jazz, but it pleasantly classes up the joint. 5/10

Some nice Jazz

I can tell there is something cool going on here but I still don't get it.

Do I love Jazz? Not particularly. Do I recognize the level of skill it takes to make this music? Hell yeah. An interesting listen.

It's Jazz. I enjoy Jazz in the right setting with the right mood. It is what it is.

not bad

This is what jazz sounds like. It's jazzy and smooth. Unfortunately I don't feel like listening to this as I work without a glass of whisky and a cigarette

Very all over the place, 4 parts that let each instrument shine Devided into the ear speakers with clear distinction where each instrument would be in the room, which can be tiresome after a while when one instrument is just having a solo If you like jazz it's probably definitely for you

I wonder if this was in any way inspiration for the love below? Regardless, I did enjoy. Much more hectic than I would've expected, but interesting solos.

A bit dissonant for me. Not super leading jazz but tumultuous

Fin dzezic

Not a huge jazz fan but this was easy to listen to.

I'm sure it's important, but I don't know enough about the history of jazz and/or Coltrane to know why it's important. I'd prefer to listen to Coltrane's more melodic pieces.

Interesting jazz album, definitely need to LISTEN AGAIN, only got one listen in.

I know it's great, but I'm super ignorant about jazz. I enjoyed it but didn't feel compelled to finish it.

Enjoyed it and really appreciated the brevity of this album. I’m not grasping why it’s super revered tho

Not all songs were available sadly but I enjoyed it

I really don’t like jazz. And I didn’t love this. It’s a 2 and barely gets that. I get that he’s a legend and all, but I just can’t get into it. Sounds like an unrehearsed mess to be.

not enjoyable for me

Again, it is undoubted that the talent is there. I just don't get it. I felt like I was dying as the saxophone got louder.

I try! I still cannot, but I try. Maybe when I was trying so hard to be cool at 14, drinking black coffee and watching Twin Peaks I'd have pretended to get this bop, but I'm much blander now. He should add vocals to all of it.

Glad I listened, I recognize that this is top-shelf jazz, but... well, jazz isn't really my thing.

Impressive, but the discord was just too much for me this time

I remember my first time playing an instrument. Just because it tells a story, doesn't mean it's a good one. This album is intricate, noisy, emotional, avant-garde, unique, anything but good. Track I: it is fine. there is a repeating set of notes that seems to be the theme here. I think the message is this unbounded love, or "love supreme", surrounding this repeating harmony. As the song goes on the harmony gets increasingly intricate and John on the saxophone takes extra turns and twists around the main points to show the intense passion he has for this supreme love". Finishing with a droning vocal of him saying the name of the project for some reason. Track II: It starts off all right with some notion of a theme that the saxophone keeps returning to; that high note and the walk down. Once the spotlight is handed to the piano, things start to break down. McCoy Tyner on the keys dances around the rhythm skillfully, then seems to just lose all sense of music. He begins spamming dissonant chords which, have their place, but not here. The "discussion" between the sax and piano results in the sax coming back in and attempting to regain control of the situation unsuccessfully. The redeeming feature of this track is how the drums and standing bass were able to maintain any rhythm. The intensity of emotion can be seen through the "voice crack" sound of the high notes from the sax. Almost an uncontrollable passion. This track successfully told a story, but it didn't sound good. Track III: Begins with the first technically impressive portion in my eyes, the drum solo. However, this is the least emotional part of the album thus far. The rest of the song is a more enjoyable harmony between the keys and sax. The music deconstructs itself towards the end, like it already has so many times, as the drums bring us out. This leads into a 2.5 minute "bass solo" which is just a kid exploring different notes that he can play on a standing bass. The only reason this portion isn't a complete waste of time is because it gives me a break from the noise I've been put through the last 20 minutes. Track IV: Alright a solid conclusion with structure, layers, and everyone playing their instruments properly. The drums carry here. I listened to this album probably 9 times front to back and begged my friends to explain to me why they love it so much. The sounds here are unique and can tell a story, but the only emotion it evokes from me is annoyed and bored.

Not too fond of jazz.

not a jazz fan, and this album, all but the last composition which sounded more like a song, was this random array of nice sounding instruments. Felt like a warm-up sesh rather than a thought-through performance.

i like the jazzy music but i like hearing voices sing i need volcals

Reaĺy dont get this style of jazz. Great sax playing but none of the musicians seem to be playing the same song.

Frankly uninteresting with no memorable or stand-out motifs. The runs were just like any other runs heard in bebop songs. Coltrane's done far better.

Just not for me

Not a fan

I don't really appreciate jazz in general. John Coltrane is of course legendary, his bandmates are cool cats, and the importance of this album is undeniable. That doesn't make me want it in my ears. Next we have the 1965-style stereo mix, where you get all the sax in your left ear and all the drums in the right (piano and bass are centered). I dare you to listen to this end-to-end in your headphones without a "listen in mono" option.

(3/7) now I understand why orchestras have conductors

I wish I was the kind of classic and cultured fella who enjoys Coltrane but alas, I’m just not. And really most of the album is okay except for the saxophone. Ugh! Saxophones are the worst! Bowie can get away with it a little because I love him so much but in general I’d rather listen to a brigade of kazoos and vibraslaps than a sax. Anyway, sorry, Mr. Coltrane. I’m just not cool enough for you.

i dont listen jazzzzz

Coltrane is clearly a massive talent, but I guess I just don't gravitate towards instrumental jazz like I do with most genres. Wouldn't mind it as background music though. A personal 2, but I can recognize why it'd be much higher for others. STAND-OUT SONG: “A Love Supreme, Pt. 2: Resolution” HONORABLE MENTION: “A Love Supreme, Pt. 4: Psalm”

I love jazz, and it's a great listen, but I struggle to find the incredible-ness of it because I end up wanting to write instead of sitting and listening, and so I end up making it more of a background noise (which is why I prefer vocal jazz because I pay attention more). That's not to say this album is bad or that I disliked it, it's just not one I plan on replaying, beside to have as background music on a writing playlist. I found the transitions between the pieces to be really fun, like the low bass at the end of part 1, into the full band for part 2. I love the jazz sound and I find it comforting and fun and easy to listen to. Beautiful album, just not the kind of album I tend to reach for. If it was in a concert setting I would adore it, with all the solos and just the energy jazz brings into a room, but since it is just an album it cuts away at some of that excitement for me. I don't really get jazz, but I enjoy it, and this album plays that weird line of "I don't really get it so I don't really like it" and "it sounds good the whole way through so yeah". Pursuance is probably my favourite track, simply because it is the most energetic. I loved the intro drum solo, then the one midway through that transitioned into the bass solo (love a bass solo). Psalm is a close second with it being the most dramatic piece of the album.

Jazz 🙄

sometimes jazz is the best thing you've ever heard and sometimes its some bullshit and this is more of the latter i want to say i like it i really do but i just dont

Bare ikke mig, alt for meget trut.

Another album that is obviously very technically impressive but means nothing to me

moze jakbym sluchala tego 50 lat temu w jakiejs kawiarni to by mi sie podobalo

Ambitny jazz:)

Jazzijazzijazzi.

just started listening, i really like the first song. i love the beginning of this. ok tbh im not the biggest fan of this much avant gardness, idk lolll its a bit too experimental and strange for my taste. im more into bebop, hardbop, big band. first track over. ok so i wasnt the biggest fan, but i can appreciate it. sort of. anyways, see u tomorrow

Well, I guess I’m in the group of people who don’t “get it.” I wish I liked this. Maybe sax squeak doesn’t hit the same as guitar amp feedback for me?

Granted a very technical album but man, this was a tough listen. Maybe I don’t like jazz.

I can’t opine on this other to say ‘it’s all over my head, babe.’

Not my genre at all. Wish it were. Maybe as I age it will become. I’m sure this is really good

Too much jazz for a Thursday morning

No more jazz, PLEASE!

You know... I didn't hate it as much as I have other jazz albums, but I still didn't care for it. I know, I'm a bad music listener.

ts jazz

First track... Booo daaa dooo dip. 'Its the notes you don't play". I piano being walked on by a cat playing random notes and a sax just screaming in pain. Not for me.

Sophie - Why is every album on this list 4 songs yet the length is like 40 minutes? Again, maybe background music but I certainly wouldn’t be putting it on in my home. Not bad music though, just not my style. 2/5

I've tried so hard, but I just don't love listening to jazz music. I'm sure this is a great album for those that do though.

Most modern jazz doesn't hit with me. I like melody and harmony. I can take a little jam band, a heap of improvisation as part of a larger work as long as it isn't too repetitive. I keep coming back to a few of the best Coltrane\Monk performances to see if age allows me to appreciate it. I can hear the skill in this, but it doesn't raise the little hairs on the back on my neck nor make me want to listen again. Like most great ballet, it makes me want to check my watch and read the program. I realize this may be a personal failing. I would also rather watch old Bugs Bunny cartoons than watch a ballet. I'd rather listen to early Iron Maiden than listen to this for long.

- didn’t like the first song - not a particularly cool jazz album - probably won’t listen again

This is obviously good but it's not for me

The list continues to affirm that I’m not much of a jazz enjoyer. I’m sure if you’re a jazz fan this is a great work, but it didn’t do much for me. The piano-heavy sections were more enjoyable, but the sections where it became more overcrowded with instruments tempted me to channel my inner Homer asking Lisa to ‘knock off that infernal racket’.

Revisit later 2

I don't get jazz so much aber hin und wieder sicher irritierend gut

It has been clear in my reviews that I am not a fan of jazz. This jazz, however, is worse than most. It is too meandering, and too random. He clearly achieved the sound he was going for, but it is not for me.

Not quite my tempo

nice but again

Not for me.

Probably one of the best Coltrane album titles out there, and he has a lot of album titles. Not his best music, though. Four seemingly connected tracks, if only in title. Not smooth, kind of wonky. The band doesn't seem to coalesce around any given theme(s), and it sounds like just a collection of notes that don't fit particularly well. I know there's better in Coltrane's repertoire, and this left me wanting more.

I continue to be unable to fully appreciate jazz, and today I realized it's at least in part due to how I listen to the albums on this list: while working, usually. This is usually a detriment for albums where the lyrics are a big part of the draw, but I think it's also a problem for jazz despite the lack of lyrics. Jazz can be fine as background music, but it can probably only be appreciated at a 4 or 5 star level if you're really paying attention to it. A few times during this album, I'd devote attention to it and think "oh, that was a nice little bit in the middle of this 8 minute track" but then the rest of it would just be pure background noise. I didn't dislike any of this, but I also don't think I'd like it enough to just sit and listen to it.

DNF 3/23, need to relisten. The technical ability of the musician is impressive but this is SO hard for me to listen to.

OMG no

Probably the greatest jazz record ever but it’s still jazz.

Wish I was more into jazz, but I don’t think I’m smart enough.. Was fine in the background while I worked, but not my thing. Points for musicianship though

Just not that into jazz, personally.

Jazz is a difficult genre for me to judge. It is not very accessible and since I am not the most avid listener, I tend to not really like most of it. However the stuff I do like, I like a lot. This however falls into the first category. I don't really understand the aim of this album and its music. It is likely on me for not understanding it, but I cannot give it a higher mark than I am doing now. 2/5

I don't like jazz

60s Jazz masterpiece. The kind of chaotic jazz that puts me on edge. Improv jazz like that is not for me.

i’m stressed now thanks john

Respect jazz more than I like it

Please, no more jazz.

I have an appreciation for Jazz but not an appreciation for listening to it. I understand it's importance in the history of music but I feel you cannot just sit down and enjoy a jazz album without understanding the complexities and improvisations of the genre. I did take some time to read more about John Coltrane and the significance of this album. But ultimately it is hard for me to get past it being "just noise". Probably a criticism you might hear about any genre of music.

Not qualified to opine on jazz. This isn’t the album that’s made it click for me. FWIW first couple of tracks and final track were ok and third was a harder listen. Prefer Madness for my sax fix! Sorry but a 2 for me. Philistine I may be.

If you like it fair play. I don't. Probably like when an artist paints a few splodges when you know they can do better. .....and falls on a piano halfway through

i hate jazz it makes me angry people who say they like jazz should be given a wide berth

It’s Jazz. I wonder how Jazz artists name their music when it doesn’t have words. Tbh the instruments seem uncoordinated as if they’re playing different songs. Interesting. 2/5 personally.

Great musicianship, but I still can't really get into Jazz. It felt like random blips of scales and no real cohesiveness. Some parts better than others, but I found myself eager for it to end.

I don't like jazz so I'm not sure I could judge its merits. John Coltrane shows off his incredible skills as a musician. I found I like psalm best and other parts were more exciting or interesting but it just descends into a mess to my ears that I can't make sense of and hate hearing. 2/5

Jazz is such a double edged sword. Some stuff is like this: disorganized and overstimulating as fuck. I *know* the instrumentation here is special… I know there is virtuoso playing… but it just doesn’t sound nice.

Not a style of Jazz I enjoy, post bop, free jazz, are technically brilliant but not for me

Hard to rate this one anything more than a two when Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew was so much better.

i don't like jazz :(

not super big fan, could be cool for a dinner party

o maluco arregaça no piano oq me causa muita inveja

Angry jazz.

I was probably not in the right mood but njjjaaa

cool as background but i wouldnt listen it while walking down the street but i really love this jazz bar vibe felt like in david lynch film

Sounds Kind of generic to me.

One of the better choices among the weird selection of jazz on this list, but if you like jazz, you will already know it, and if you don’t like jazz, you definitely won’t like this.

Ich muss mich erst auf Jazz einlassen. Ich erstmal 2

I don't get improvisational jazz. Part II is superior to part I. Jazz makes me feel stupid because I absolutely do not understand most of it, this included. This is what is on at a snobby, rich young New Yorker's loft during a party in a movie. I can't imagine real people listening to this even as background music on a day-to-day basis. I feel about the saxophone the way I know many people feel about the harmonica in Bob Dylan's or Neil Young's music. I think I'm just more of a standards and jazz trio kind of person.

Tough one... this one says more about me than it says about the album, but Jazz is really not my thing :(

No doubt impressive for its time and what it is. I can appreciate its merits. But I don’t live inside the movie Whiplash; I don’t have a lot of situations in my life where I want to hear someone randomly riffing on a horn while everyone around does the same thing with theirs. I suppose it’s the ad hoc improvised feel that makes it less enjoyable. I want progression, build up, conflict, tension and maybe resolution? The only tension here seems to be between the players vying to see who can play over the other. Simpleton perspective? Maybe. But I just don’t know how or where I would listen to this on the regular. 2/5

Listening to the first song of the album, yes it is jazz i think (excuse my lack of knowledge) - I dont understand what they're trying to do. The instruments dosent seem to be flowing in sync for some reason? Maybe ill grow into it..hmm..lets see Oh the lyrics have started now (by the end of first song, my nerves seem to be settling down a little bit now) Yea no, the second song is making me restless again...ugh. Wow, i feel like strangling myself. At the third song and yep, sorry mr coltrane, i shall try out your album someday down the line again.

I really really like the saxophone sounds and the piano! The drums on the last song threw me off a bit.

Enjoyed the first track, especially when you get to hear Coltrane chant A Love Supreme.

I'm sure it's an important album but life's too short to spend even half an hour listening to what I experience as tedious chaos.

Pas son meilleur, vraiment pas

Jazz kinda sucks.

Not for me. Just jazz. Probably good of you enjoy jazz. But I don't have the patience for it

this was ok i just have instrumental jazz fatigue

Coltrane can be nice and smooth. Some of the riffs get overwhelming and I find myself reaching for the "skip" button. Something that requires focus and attention, not for background music. This album isn't my favorite Coltrane.

I've tried this album a few times over the years and not for me. Appreciate the influence it had and the musicianship in particular the drum and double bass but the claranet just gives me anxiety. If I had to listen to jazz it's probably the slower smoother stuff.

I want to like this album I really do but I just don't get it. There's a lot of really fast notes that overwhelm me. The playing is flawless but to me un engaging. And what's with the solo drumming? It's a lot of noise that leads nowhere.

No thank you. I have all the respect for Coltrane and I love a good jazz ensemble, but I need a touch more structure. If I ever need to wipe an ear worm out of my head though, this album would probably do it.

I was vibing with it at the beginning but then it just became a headache to listen to so much saxophone so not to bad i just don’t think it’s my type.

Thank god it was short. It's not bad Jazz but jesus christ is it boring to listen for 30 minutes straight when that part 3 and 4 suck so much.

not a big fan to be honest. don't get what it's doing

i dont like jazz enough for this… wouldnt listen on a regular basis but it isnt bad

Found it boring, sorry.

GOING IN: Quite hopeful LISTENED WHILE: reading a magazine FAMILIARITY: New to me SKIP RATE: Gave up entirely REPLAY VALUE: Once was plenty DISCOVERY CURVE: Never happened ALBUM ARC: All over the place VERDICT: Bit disappointing BODY'S VERDICT: Statue mode My Rating: 2 Spent almost 20 years getting to a quiet place in my head. This album undid it all in under 4 minutes.

It was a hit or miss for me. I found myself to be immersed at times and at other times bored. If I had listened to this live, I believe I would’ve liked it a lot more.

Eh. Jazz without vocals not really my thing. This album is probably the goat for jazz heads. This album does nothing for me

Just have difficulty listening to this type of music.

Definitely for a jazz lover, made me feel like I was a sex in the city extra

I suppose I need some kind of strategy to get into Jazz. So far, I have failed. *sigh* I'm sure this isn't bad, but ... well ... not very enjoyable for me. I'll keep on searching, I guess. 2/5

Several random musicians, albeit highly talented ones, recording in different rooms with different notes. Borderline irritating

fav: (?) „A Love Supreme, Pt. IV - Psalm”; sadly not my style but undeniably very impressive musically
