Give me novacaine🥺🤲🏼
Frábær plata!
The singles off this are the band at their best and are genre defining tracks for pop punk. The other tracks are sadly kind of generic. I wanted to give this five stars, but too many songs that I literally forgot about after fifteen years.
Jesus of suburbia klaut frech Summer of 69 und Ring of Fire :-D Schön den Manu wieder singen zu hören Are we waiting powernummer St.Jimmy geile uuhhs aaahhhs give me novocaine Hawaii hits hits hits war ich irgendwie zu cool für damals, aber mag ich jetzt
I liked this a lot. I liked the story and how well it was all put together.
Iznenađen koliko je album pun dobrih stvari, dosta dobrih. Iskreno, čuo jesam sigurno pola albuma davnih dana, ali nisam nikad u cijelosti i eto me sada. Favoritne: Jesus of Suburbia, Holiday/Blvd. of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy i Homecoming.
Good punk rock
This is actually pretty good. I had listened to some earlier Green Day and didn't particularly like them, but I'm liking this.
2021.11.16
It was pretty good, but everything sounded the same after a while.
Nice flashbacks
Very excited that this album is on this list! American Idiot came out while I was at the tail end of middle school it was all anyone listened to at that time. Whether that was on someone's CD or the radio, we jammed to so many of these. This was also one of the first albums I listened to with swear words (as far as I remember). Boy did I feel like a cool kid singing those words. Lots of memories with this album. Hands down my favorite Green Day album. Classic album cover too. Favs: American Idiot, Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting, and Wake Me Up When September Ends
Love it. Know this one very well, an album that was a bit taboo at the time (if you were an American kid in middle school). A great, explosive energy pervades the whole album. There's a punk rock opera concept going on here, which thankfully doesn't get tedious or feel forced because the music is so solid. So many tracks on here that I didn't realize I remembered, but a lot of familiar tunes beyond just the biggest household names. A refreshing blast from the past. Better than I remembered, and definitely worthy of a spot on here. Favorite tracks: Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Holiday, American Idiot, St. Jimmy, Wake Me Up When September Ends. Album art: 100% iconic. Probably one of the most recognizable of the 2000s. Something about red/white/black covers....they've always got staying power for me. 4.5/5
Remember this album blowing me away when released in 2004. Keep in mind their previous release was a greatest hits album so most people had assumed they were done, having already sold a zillion records. Its almost operatic. Like a punk Bohemian Rhapsody. They were already an arena rock band. So why not write a stadium rock record? The album is anchored by two 9 minute songs and a loose story runs throughout it. It moves from Bratty, anthemic. goofy and reflective, often in the same song! There are a few too many songs on it and a fair bit of filler but when it soars its stratospheric. What I hear is the original band for losers finally accepting they've won. Highlights: when September ends, Shes a rebel, Boulevard of broken dreams. 4/5
A punk rock musical? Nine minunte long medleys? What am I listening to? Well, shame on me for writting these guys off after Dookie. This is an album that was made at a serious inflection point for the band, and what they came up with is a real coming of age for the group. It took courage for the group to step out of the mold they'd been cast in and what they came up with is something that I really enjoyed. The album started off on an almost 50's pop production, amped through heavy distortion, but then I hit the 1:50 mark on "Jesus of Suburbia" and the vibe started changing. From that point on the story telling took over and the album gave way to an unfolding narrative. I was struck with the realization that I had heard a fair amount of this album in radio hits, but I had no idea how they fit together (i.e. "Holiday" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" are conjoined!). Since I hadn't heard the entire album, I didn't fully appreciate the songs in context and I was missing out on the goodness that didn't make the radio. The album includes plenty of flexes from the band's punk core ("St. Jimmy"), but they don't stay contrained by it, rebelling against their constraints. And maybe it's that spirit that really makes this album so good. After all - isn't that what punk is about?
Pretty good
Might be partially rose-colored glasses but this album's great. I like the sound and enjoyed the music. The themes aren't that useful for me, but some classic songs are on display here. Interesting that all of the non-famous tracks are much longer.
Not quite as good as dookie, but still a great album
Overblown in the best way
Used to really not like this album, but it has grown on me thanks to this listen.
Green Day was the shit in the Bay Area during the early 2000s. Reminds me of elementary school
First 2 songs are amazing. The remaining ones - hard to listen.
Still excellent after these years; quiet varied for Green Day and punchy bass
Album 2 Forgot how good some of the tracks are
Fun fact, I broke my parents couch bouncing up and down to this album when I was like 4 years old.
Been meaning to check out this type of music for a while. Loved the "Bohemian Rhapsody of punk music", Jesus of Suburbia. And Wake Me Up When September Ends hit hard as our lockdown will likely end after September.
Already listened to most of the songs since they're iconic
Lekkere rock natuurlijk!
classic. easy 4. almost a 3 cause overplayed
Better than I remembered it to be. There's plenty of amazing hits while the rest of the album is rather consistently good. The quality dips a little at the end but that might be just me not enjoying too long albums which this is one of those.
It is so nice to see these nice young boys cracking the glass ceiling and assimilating with the rest of us. Have you ever been to the opera, or the theatre? Well, this record is so nice, I'd like to extend an invitation. What's that, you say? Oh, yes! We DO like money but the idea of a broadway show based on this album is absolutely preposterous. Oh, that's a hoot! Well, sure. Go ahead and try. Sure, it IS a good album, you're right, but ... Oh! Oh, YES! We hate George W. Bush too. Oh I see, yeah. Yeah, theatre audiences hate him as well. Ok, YES! You've sold me. Let's do it. Good on you, sir. This will be jolly fun...
While I personally prefer Dookie overall (what a sentence!), American Idiot is a very strong album, with Green Day maturing into a band that matters. Billie Joe has a very unique voice, one that entirely fits the sound of the band and the POV of the song lyrics. In listening to the whole piece, it's clear that the band intended as a concept album and is no surprise that it has done well as a rock opera/musical. The stories & characters in the songs are compelling, and the music (unfortunately) tips over sometimes into musical theatre tropes. There are a few tracks that make me think the band was aiming a little too high, but it's hard to fault their ambition. I'm very interested in listening to this again, closer, to glean more from it.
One of the small things I appreciate about Green Day is their ability to blend the end of one song into the beginning of the next (Jink to Haushinka anyone). Being that Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming are each 5 songs in one, they do it several times in a row. It really is an underrated skill. St. Jimmy sounds alot like their early 90s stuff: fast and hard yet accessible. Give Me Novacaine is part the old sound (chorus) and something I can’t quite put my finger on (verses). My oh my the verses sound like a dreamy 50s song. I’m in between on this album. I really like it, but I don’t love it yet. I would like to keep listening.
Ich wünsche Green Day per se alles Gute.
It is amazing what they do with 3 or 4 chords. Good record.
I will always love this album despite the 2nd half being a tad weaker than the first few songs.
Liked this a lot more than I remember liking it when it came out.
\m/
Some transitions on this album are simply incredible (Holiday/Boulevard of broken dreams). Themes of american society, I can't really relate with. But the music is iconic.
few bangers on it
Não me caíram bem. Idiota. O álbum ficou em casa. MotA: American Idiot "Don't wanna be an American idiot"

super kickass hooky melodic pseudo punk genius
Bops start to finish. Brother's favourite/10
Its punk rock, babyyyy
GOOD THROWBACK
one of my personal favorite albums. great songs from front to back.
Ball buster of an album! Absolutely BRILLIANT
I think I've heard all of Dookie (it was everywhere in '94). I own Nimrod ('97). I had heard "American Idiot", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" off of this album, but that might be it. I liked the album. I'd listen to it again.
Good shit I really like it especially Septemeber
Excellent and nostalgic album
Very very solid album. I listened to American Idiot a lot on our old computer with ITunes, and that song still slaps. I love the singles that I've got saved, but the whole rock opera trope drags on a bit with some of the longer songs, so I dropped this to a 4. A high 4, nonetheless Already Saved: American Idiot, Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me up When September Ends Saved After Listening: Give Me Novacaine / She's a Rebel
Saved Prior: American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams*, Wake Me up When September Ends Off Rip: Holiday*, Are We the Waiting / St. Jimmy, Give Me Novacaine / She's a Rebel Cutting Edge: None *: I prefer the songs split up, so I had them saved off a greatest hits compilation at different times Overall Notes: I can't believe this album is as good as it is. IDK if I really follow the plot of the punk rock opera, but these songs all bop despite their hefty running times for punk songs.
4/5 well that was unexpected. Kudos to them!
.
Car journeys with dad
I don't know if I ever listened to this album, but I know every song. Iconic
Nostalgia

These lyrics are burned into my memory forever. Cool guitar riffs and connected story. Some songs drag on for a bit.
Bastante bueno. Temas buenos.
I enjoyed the mashup songs. Jesus of Suburbia is good too but at 9 minutes a little long
Wondering if this album is a storyline or not. Want to research some time to see if it is.
Better than I remember. A classic
Very good, perhaps overrated.
Great album, they put it all out there
For punk, it is very thoughtful and interesting
Dit is toch geweldig
Not their best, but I like it
Definitely heard this one. One of my favorites. Very cynical, and considered a sell out album by them, but, as a concept album/rock opera style, it’s great!
I have a hard time stepping back and not being judgy about this album and about Green Day. After years of feeling like they play poser punk and feeling like they were making political songs as part of a growing fad, rather than out of genuine concern for the current political climate. There's undeniably some great songwriting and the production quality is great.
Very good musicianship and a very cool approach, doing most of the songs as double feature/mashups that flow pretty seamlessly into one another. The hits are much better than some of the other tracks, but they all fit together pretty well.
Some classic songs but not their best album
Meh.
Was pretty much over Green Day when this album came out. But looking back it’s probably one of their best.
4.25
I was never interested in this album when it came out, but I heard the singles. They're better in the context of the album. Green Day can certainly write some catchy songs.
One of my favorite albums from Green Day. I like how they evolved and this new sound. Solid album.
Middle school favorite. A rock opera in every sense of the term.
Y
Been a while. A classic
2004. Key Songs: American Idiot, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends
2,5
It's Green Day alright
Alright not very exciting first album but there were some enjoyable parts didn’t listen through though
reminds me of naomi. I thought the songs were good but i dont think id choose to listen to them myself.
It was fine a few great songs other were eh
A big hit from my early teen years. Quite good. The rest of the album surprised me considering the first 2 songs are mega hits. I like the 2 song tracks, they make for seamless transitions.
Liked half of the two part songs
Really doesn't do anything for me but giving it a 2 feels harsh.
It’s an okay album. I remember all the hits being overplayed on radio. They were catchy. Green Day can write good pop punk tunes. This album isn’t amazing but I can understand why it’s on the list.
punk rock
I remember listening to this one in my childhood. It holds up pretty well today, sans some of the wording and lyricism. Favourite Track(s): Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends Least Favourite Track(s): Letter Bomb, She's a Rebel, Give Me Novacaine
Surprised me with its musical force. Their political lyrics are kind of lite-beer but the songs pretty fuckin rip. The band can find a groove and get a loud, live-on-stage feel. They’re still not punk - they were never punk - but they’ve found a unique sound. And I still don’t know if Billie Joe really sings like that or it’s a bit.
pretty much sort of okay!!! theres obviously a handful of tracks on here that like....it feels weird to say i Like them so much as im just Attached To Them in a way that feels different from my normal avenues of Articulating An Opinion On Music. as for the rest my general green day feelings apply....i struggle with billie joe's stiff singing (tho he's found his Timbre at this point for poppy deployment), and despite the leap in ambition this is still a p samey record across its mildly bloated length, but i do find the personality of the band very likable. its a pretty spotty tracklist but even if it wasnt, i rly only have so much appetite for green day songwriting at a time. this is kind of Tommy for gen x and millennials, for better and worse in both overlap and differences. tommy is so bizarre that its remained an object of fixation and frustration for me, where american idiot i know Exactly what it meant emotionally to both its creators and its audience. its easier to appreciate, but i am less likely to think ab it i suppose.
Awesome
I remember this album was pretty big when it came out. I was always hearing Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends. This album was just ok, I felt like it got a bit boring after a while.
Never a HUGE Green Day fan. Loved Dookie when it came out like everybody else in the 90s. This album makes me yearn for the days tot George W. Bush’s stupidity versus what we have now.
taki spoko
it's good but not my vibe
A monolith of an album that pretentious dweebs such as I would be quick to belittle so they can go back to glazing 'Dookie.' That desire is a fallacy however, this album is pretty cool. Chronologically this album finds its self in an transition for the genre of rock. The Strokes and other cool guy* rock bands were actively embarrassing the pop punks of yester year. All the while bands like MCR were turning pop punk into emo. In a way, this album feels like the last hurray for a genre that would fade away from the mainstream. But I mean fuck, its a good celebration. The most iconic songs off this album are well remembered for a reason. Not many can invoke bratty swagger like Billie Joe Armstrong, and the drumming on the album is always energetic and tight. They're simultaneously hooky, danceable, and triumphant. Those adjectives do carry over into most of the songs of the album, HOWEVER, it does make it a tad stale at times. "American Idiot" and "Holiday" pulls this sound off the best and the most interesting music is afterwards, found in the departures from this sound. "Jesus of Suburbia" and "Wake Me up When September Comes' being my favorite off the album. The former brings me great joy as pop punk rock opera is a silly statement and I enjoy reveling in that sound. The constant change in song structure and focus on story telling being the highlights. The latter is perhaps the dead dad song of all time, its not very deep, but truthfully that feels like one of it's strengths. It can be exhausting trying to make your grief feel flowery and vast in it's meaning, the comfort of sleep during such times is certifiably 'real as fuck.' The detractors of this album are a tonally samey mid-section and guitar sound that is a lil boring on this pair of ears despite suiting the music well, please play anything but a power chord, I dare you. its gonna be a 3.5/5 *cool guy rock bands also include bands like yeah yeah yeahs and metric, its a gender inclussive term, promise :)
Classic Green Day. Still think Dookie is the GOAT
Not the biggest green day fan but undeniable how influential these guys have been. Some great chord progressions on this too plus the production pure punk rock in your face
I have to applaud the ambition and the scope here, but Green Day is essentially doing a stadium punk version of Zen Arcade and it's missing the desperation and the heart. The songwriting is legitimately good and I also recognize that this just simply doesn't resonate the same way to me as others. But they've made much better music that was much less regarded.
I haven’t listened to Green Day on purpose since Dookie so I’d never heard this one. It was much better than I was expecting. And 7 minute songs?! Who knew.
Green Day - nothing special. More american than idiot.
When American Idiot came out, I remember being so anti-Green Day that I never really gave it a chance. Twenty years later, it felt like the perfect time to finally sit down and listen to it properly. A lot of that prejudice came from Dookie, which I really disliked as a teenager. Because of that, I assumed Green Day were all loud, shouty punk rock with little substance. American Idiot proved me wrong. There are some genuinely great songs here, and a lot more variety than I was expecting. What surprised me most was the ambition of the album. Yes, there are the big, energetic rock songs, but there are also some excellent ballads, strong melodies and surprisingly good storytelling running through the lyrics. It feels far more considered and mature than I had given it credit for all those years ago. It's still not a genre I would naturally gravitate towards, and I probably won't be rushing back to it regularly, but I came away with a much greater appreciation for Green Day as songwriters and musicians. Sometimes revisiting an album years later can completely change your perspective, and that's definitely what happened here. Favourite tracks: “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” Least favourite tracks: Everything on the album was worth a listen Album artwork: Cool album cover
SIngles are good but I found it a bit boring.
plenty of good ideas, lots of enthusiasm, and very good recording/mixing/mastering, but there's more vocals writing than instrumental writing, and it ends up somewhat samey. also, you can't say that word, buddy.
Another record where I vacillated a lot. At times I caught myself thinking, this is a surprisingly enjoyable song. Then I would think, well that surprisingly long song had an enjoyable section. I thought I would like this a lot more than I did, considering I have generally positive feelings about Green Day. But those feelings don't appear to be based on this particular album. Overall I felt there was something here, but more judicious editing would have helped a lot.
Recall this being on my older brother's ipod. That alone made it cool in my eyes. I was excited to revisit it, but have to say the hits from this album remain the highlights and the hidden gems I was hoping to discover were not exactly there. Feels very of a time and a place to me. Boulevard of Broken Dreams and WMUWSE are the best two songs, and I wish they went into that mode more often. But good, definitely solid.
2004 1. American Idiot: Classic Greenday banger. 2. Jesus of Surburbia: familia. Very nostalgic. 3. Holiday: this album is hit after hit. 4. Boulevard of Broken Dreams: hit. 5. Are We The Waiting: unfamiliar. Softer. I don’t mind it. 6. St Jimmy: unfamiliar. Nice lead in and fits well. 7: Give Me Novocaine: unfamiliar. Softer again. Don’t mind but a bit dull. Others do it better. 8: She’s a Rebel: right style, bit nothingy to me. Easy filler. 9: Extraordinary Girl: as above. 10: Letterbomb: hmmmm I need another listen. 11. Wake Me Up When September Ends: such a huge hit at the time. Practically had its own cult. Well written hit. 12: Homecomeing: need another listen. Gosh it’s long. Many songs in one. Not a fan of the inserts. 13: Whatsername: fine. I feel like the lyrics of this would have suited Dookie better. There a pull between different greenday eras/identities. Quite a front-loaded album, hits wise. Not at all bothered about the second half. Really of its time - it was THE sound. It’s weird listening now when all the problems that it speaks of are deeper/more entrenched and more polarising now than they were even then, and also feeling like all the radio and fame over the years waters down the meaning?
05/29 Some good moments in it. Not bad
Again not a bad listen but didn’t really blow me away either. I can appreciate it
A casualty of the Loudness Wars*. If this were mixed better, it would easily be 4 stars. Very good songwriting and musical performances. Unfortunately, the volume being maxed out and flattened just kills everything. The dynamics are all gone. It just becomes monotonous, flat, and fatiguing. And it's entirely the fault of the mastering. *For those who don't know... this got bad in the late 90's and early 00's. When mastering a recording, if you turn up the volume level in a mix, it eventually hits a ceiling. Eventually the quiet parts are just as loud as the loudest parts. So there is no dynamic contrast. But recording studios did this so that, when played on the radio, your song wouldn't be quieter than the ones around it.
Some bangers I guess but I don't really enjoy this genre that much. Also the songs are soooo long. Probably the best punk? rock? album out there tho I just don't like punk rock 3.5/5
I enjoyed a lot of songs which are super famous, but the album didn’t really have the WOW factor for me. It’s a solid album but I’ve unfortunately not been able to get into Green Day. I’m yet to put my finger on what’s exactly putting me off but I think it’s vocals… no offence Billie Joe Armstrong.
Not heard an album of theirs, quite enjoyed this, almost a 4
Have heard so many of these so many times on the radio over the years. Fine, but played out and nothing special to begin with.
To much the same
Overblown and overrated. But we sure did play this one out back in the day.
3 for the nostalgia. My brother loved this album and I secretly loved a few songs, but would have never let him know at that time.
I liked this album. Kind of like a punk rock opera. Has a thread to follow, and some good songs with food for thought. Worth giving a few spins. 3.5/5
Ok. This is definitely a progression in songwriting from Dookie. But it's still not my taste. It's pretty solidly done throughout, but again, not my taste. Was I glad it was over? Yup, but it doesn't deserve a 2.
There is some relevancy here based on current events. So there is that. Yet I couldn’t help but be annoyed by all the two songs in one track nonsense. It didn’t help with make this album longer than it needed to be.
its alright, the songs are too long tho
Yayaaaaa 13yr old me wasn't into this... But I really appreciate the nostalgia.
I was all ready to rag on this but, when viewed purely as a pop album, it does what it sets out to do well. Catchy riffs, some quotable lyrics, and maintains energy. I’m still not much of a fan though and, despite it trying to rail against the politics at the time, it comes across as quite shallow and lacks any real sense of vitriol behind it, possibly due to a pervasive view that this is where they ‘sold out’ and targeted the arenas rather than the more grimy gig venues with music that had greater mass appeal as a result.
it was good but not my style
Nothing new here, but enough catchy pop tunes to keep it interesting
I think that I haven't ever listened this album through. Almost all songs are somewhat familiar and radio hits are rather worn out. Still this solid album that could be rated as weak 3 stars.
Green Day were the second band I really got into after Queen when I was 13, I loved everything from their first album to warning and a chunk of this album but this is where I see the band going downhill personally
I hadn’t heard this in a very long time because back when I was a LOSER I deemed this too uncool to enjoy. Now that I am smart and beautiful I think it’s pretty good.
Been a few years since I've heard this album in full. I think the narrative, of disenfranchised kids finding community and conflict in each other amid a highly politicized and war-glorifying societal climate, still holds up, but musically everything got a bit samey over nearly an hour. Was considering 4 stars, but downgrading to an honourary 3.5.
While listening to this album I realized that there was a period in my life where I was actually listening to this album very frequently. The fact that I could not remember when, or why, or even that I had done it, says everything I could possibly say about this album.
Good
The songs on here that stood the test of time are truly great - but there is a lot in this release that’s just super mediocre/forgettable. I wanted to give it a 4 but I’m just not gonna spin this whole album again - some of the bangers yes, but there’s too much fluff in this imo.
a couple of iconic songs that are good, the others are a bit long but maybe would like if i listened more
Some decent songs on here. Not quite as energetic as you would expect from them. Like the theme of the title track. It’s an okay album. 2.5/5 Might listen again
Had a few really nice tubes on it. I meant to type tunes but I'm going to leave that. They're nice tubes and I enjoyed them. I've never been a rock opera guy. I am a punk fan. I'm conflicted.
not my favorite but nostalgic
I wanted to hate this album more but it was pretty good. Teenager in me is joyed. I don't appreciate this as an actual punk-rock because there's way more bands that do it better and more genuine, but it's a pretty solid pop-punk with some bangers like Boulevard of Broken Dreams or Holiday. But otherwise I'm not a huge fan of Green Day.
Had heard the singles, for me, Dookie was good fun, the rest of their catalog hasn't been hugely interesting. Now, the title track is one I've enjoyed since first hearing it, the rest of this is just alright. I was impressed at the fact they threw down a couple of lengthy tracks with some structure to them, but I'm not rushing out to hear this again.
not as good as Joni Mitchell’s Blue
I’ve been avoiding this album for more than 20 years — tired of people telling me it was great or a big step forward for Green Day, or it had something important to say. I was a mostly-unwilling participant in Green Day being the soundtrack to my high school years and I was damned if I was going to let it follow me into my 20s as well. 20 years later, I think I was right to avoid it. It’s not horrible, but it has none of the fun and great tunes that made me enjoy Dookie despite it not being my favorite type of music. All the unavoidable radio songs still make me wince and hearing them in the context of the record doesn’t help. Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams probably fares the best of the hits. All that said I do appreciate that Green Day couldn’t make slacker teen punk music forever. It would have been worse if they entered their 30s still trying to recreate the feeling of smoking pot in their parents’ basement. A sprawling rock opera wasn’t the way I expected them to move on, and it’s not something I was interested in hearing — particularly from them. The middle section of the album is the worst part, playing out like a tiresome pop-punk version of Abbey Road, full of semi-unfinished loosely connected ideas. All that said, there is so much evidence throughout this record that Green Day is a band who is meticulous about their craft. It’s kind of daring for a band associated with music that loudly shouts, “who cares!?” to clearly care so much. Maybe part of me wished they still appreared to be as effortlessly cool as they did in the 90s, but looking back now I can’t fault them for realizing that version of Green Day had reached its expiration date. I probably won’t listen to this again. I respect it, even while I admit it’s not really for me.
its alright Not my fav but is a classic
Teenage musicality, pre-teen politics.
A pretty good album, some good songs on it
It’s about as subtle as a sledgehammer but ultimately a good collection of pop rock
Geenday uh american idiot is good and if the music of its genre they do a p good job but just not the right type of noise for me.
FAVO: American Idiot, Holiday/Boulevard of broken dreams, Wake me up when September ends
Bubblegum punk or just pop wearing punk sensibilities? Kudos to them for rebounding and reestablishing themselves 10 years after Dookie for a new generation.
Hittibiisit on kovinkin nostalgisia jo nykysellään, vaikkei paljoa oo tullu kuunneltua muuta. En oo juurikaan tän emobändin suurin fani ollut koskaan, eikä vieläkään täysin iskenyt.
okay, legalzinho
While it's not as instantly catchy as most of Dookie was, it's still an enjoyable listen. Favorite track: Holiday
reminds me of middle school but nothing mind blowing
The hits are hits, the rest mostly filler
It’s still strange to think that Green Day did a concept album. It works and feels less annoying than it did when it came out.
I've never really listened to any of the albums post Dookie, maybe because by like, my 20s, I felt too old for Green Day, and their music, at least the singles, seemed mostly worse. That being said, on relistening to this years later, the singles are pretty good here--American Idiot, Boulevard and Holiday. Overall the songs just aren't quite as good as Dookie--many sound a little more general. 3/5
Ok
Knew the singles, but not the album. Protest music for 12 year olds, and that's not a bad thing. Was doing well until they did a nine minute track. The Who is not punk.
Ok
I was never a big Green Day fan growing up. My exposure was mostly limited through their radio hits, but I remember my cousin was a huge fan. We'd play Battlefront II on his PS2 and listen to this album. Listening to it today brought made me wistful for innocence. This album also makes me think of the guy who threw a shoe at George Bush. I hope he's having a good day.
Probably going a little lower than most people on this one. The first 5 or so songs are all recognizable bangers. This one just felt a little soft & lower level than what I like to listen to. I kept thinking it reminded me of other, better music and went Beatles to Bowie to Clash to Ramones back to Beatles back to Clash, etc. Half of the album sounded like it was made by the That Thing You Do band, the Wonders (O-needers).
pretty good
its alright "nobody likes you everyone loves you" is homo asf
Pas mon style
Only heard blvd of broken dreams (and *heard of* American Idiot) which is a song I enjoy mostly because of nostalgia, but never bothered to branch into their stuff. Found myself pleasantly surprised with some of the material here. Much of the tracks are split into different segments and the transitions often feel well-timed and smooth. Of course there is a lot here that I find utterly uninteresting and I came away from this record pretty confident I wouldn’t have the urge to listen to it in full for a while. However, I enjoyed multiple tracks and feel as if there is the potential for it to further grow on me. Wake Me Up When September Ends is great. Don’t see myself coming back much but came away happily here. 3/5.
This was much better than I thought it would be. I remember hearing a couple songs too much and I dreading this listen. Not bad.
Bueno, me hace recordar la adolescencia
I don’t know man, I guess it’s fine. I feel like this was a massive hit & kinda launched these guys to another level. And I understand it’s supposedly smart social critique or sthg. I wanted to at least appreciate it for that reason, or understand what the critics seemed to adore. The problem as I see it, is it sounds so much like Green Day. I just have no patience for the pop punk sound. There were a few moments that sounded interesting but I don’t remember which & I don’t care to go back & find out. I’m granting 2.5 stars & I guess we can round up out of deference to its supposed greatness
The first four songs elevate this album tremendously. The rest of the album kinda meanders in places, with some highlights for me (St. Jimmy, Gove Me Novacaine, Wake Me Up” but the others lose me
This was an album I could swear I had already listened to back-to-front many times, but clearly I haven't. It is filled with an optimistic frustration at post 9/11 politics, but with 2026 ears you can't help but hear the naivety in it. Some of the songs are classic bangers, but there is quite a bit of bland filler. As is life!
Who amongst us on the cusp of Gen Z and milennial didn't have a phase where they thought this was the peak of music? If you say you didn't then ur lying! Looking back it's kinda naff, but then that's only because things were only gonna get worse than George Bush later down the line. But then Billie Joe and co couldn't have known that. It's like, enjoyable upbeat pop punk rock, catchy and fun.
A harsh 3 but Dookie is better and that wouldn't get a 5. That's my justification.
It's not Dookie or Insomniac, but not as terrible as I thought it may be
enjoyed some more than others, wake me up when september ends would be fun to play on drums. didn’t realise a lot of the songs were two in one lol? but yeah idk about this one
Great album and very pivotal release. This record has aged very well given the current state of the US and the world. The music was innovative at the time and Green Day has always had a distinct sound. This is a solid record.
Had some bangers, but I couldn't get myself to finish the album. i might give it a proper re-listen
Maybe my lack of nostalgia hurts me here but this just doesn’t do much for me. Very whiny
The more things change the more they stay the same, yeah?
Although I’m not the biggest Green Day fan, revisiting the album does remind me that it was a pretty good album. But the radio overplayed songs I can live without.
3.5/5
Veramente insipido.
Very first half heavy album, first 4 songs plus Wake Me Up When September Ends were great but the other ones were either boring or just straight bad, very inconsistent album
Day 209 Highlights American Idiot Wake me up when September ends Whatsername
A generational album no doubt, but its cracks are definitely showing. Its commentary is surface-level, with the band never making any actual attempt in political discourse. The music itself is fine I guess, and the hooks are still somewhat catchy.
When “punk” goes mainstream
first time listening to green day, wish me luck. it was really interesting how i have never listened to green day but apart for their iconic songs, i got a feeling of nostalgia listening to the ones i didnt know, weird but i guess being born in the 2000's, i inherited some kind of fondness to music of those years without even know it
American Idiot is a fine album, but I still prefer the earlier albums like Dookie and Insomniac.
I liked American idiot, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Wake Me up When September Ends is just an incredible song. I'm annoyed by the double song tracks. I don't really understand the point if it's done for every single track and makes the songs 10 minutes long. That being said, in every song, I found something that I liked. They just all sounded too similar for me to give a higher rating than this.
2.6 stars
Green Day has great pop instincts....good melodies, pop-punk, with some topical influence. Was a little long/repetitive, but is an important document of its era/political moment, so I'll average all that out to go 3.5 with a round down.
I’ll try give this another listen at some point but overarching sentiment is its hard to seperate what are i think very good songs from the very particular vibe and era that they evoke and also mid oughts animated films
Well written pop-punk songs with good hooks but a voice that irritates the shit out of me. I can appreciate it. Whatever.
Generationally ubiquitous album that is pretty damn corny at the end of the day. Green Day trying to be artsy with 9 minute song "suites" seems like a reach to me. At the same time, half of these songs and riffs are coded to my brain forever so I'll just give this a three and stop thinking about it.
I was firmly in my teenage years when this album came out, I would've been exactly the target audience, but I'd listened to Dookie and Nimrod before this, so my general reaction to this was "what is this punk opera shit about". For many years I avoided this album. Listened to it last year as my partner was due to go to their gigs. Still didn't hit. Sitting down with it again, it's still a frustrating album. There's some great tracks in this - Letterbomb, Extraordinary Girl, and with the exception of Jesus of Suburbia which is about 2 minutes too long, all of the singles still hold up. Does it make me take back all the crap I gave it 20 years ago? Nah, but it's not a bad album.
Nostalgi.
Crisp and excellently written pop-punk. I made fun of this kind of music so relentlessly when it first came out, and now I really just appreciate “good tunes.” I do think some of the political/concept album stuff is still pretty cheesy and think the horrible musical nullifies some of its legacy. The gulf of quality between singles and the rest is pretty noticeable for me, too.
Nice punk pop rock album
3.4 3x watched the music videos (extended) as well. doesn't compare to dookie
Hmmm, I get why they were popular and I did listen to Green Day in that timeline but I was never a real die hard. They do have a clean, crispness to their punk energy that is very specific to them. Stylistically, unique and worth a listen. This was a decent album.
Good, but doesn't hold up as well as I would like
très sympa. agréablement surpris, bel album complet. 3.5/5
Already know it!
Meh
I'm assuming this came up for me today due to the fact that it's the Friday before Super Bowl Sunday and Green Day was tabbed to play some sort of pre-game show which sent the fucktard conservative MAGAs into a torrid grievance state. Anyway, I don't know what I was listening to in 2004, but it wasn't this. Actually, that's not true. Songs off this album were absolutely everywhere and completely unavoidable. But it wasn't my vibe. Like anyone else, I had a copy of Dookie when it came out and I liked it....still kind of do. But shortly after that I discovered Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath and that's what carried me through high school along with Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and some rap like Tupac and Biggie, Nas, DMX, Snoop and Dre. Suddenly, I saw Green Day for what they were...just pop punk. I never bought another album of theirs and ultimately found Billie Joe Armstrong's voice to be kind of annoying. They had some catchy songs on the radio from time to time but I never wanted to buy an album. And when this came out, I just rolled my eyes. So this is actually the first time I've listened to it the entire way through. It's not bad, but it's not great to me. I'd rather listen to Dookie any day, but that's probably because there's some memories there of being a kid and having that album. You can see where they pushed themselves a little bit creatively on this one, but that's it. Really don't feel the need to come back to this album, so it's a 3.
I like Green Day, but a whole album was pushing it for me. Very similar sound from one song to the next, much like AC/DC, but I simply don't vibe as much with pop punk.
Extremely theatrical and a little more pop than pop punk but still pretty solid.
If this GreenDay album is on the list I hope it means that either Dookie, Kerplunk, or Insomniac is on the list. Not saying all four need to be, but I'd easily pick any of those three over this one to be on the list. Despite listening to them in the 90s I haven't really listened to them since then. This sounds like Green Day of the 90s, but a bit more polished and less raw and a little less angry. Also, the middle part of Jesus of Suburbia is totally a copy of Summer of 69.
This album is pure nostalgia for me. GreenDay was my favorite band from 11 to 14 years old. It tells the current state of America very well with a song such as American Idiot (even though its from more than 20 years ago). I am listening to the album on Spotify (sadly), and Holiday and Boulevard of Broken dreams (Green Day's 2 best songs) are together on a single track and the transition between the two is just perfect. However not every song is amazing and it was kind of disappointing hearing the whole album because the songs that are actually good I already knew and the rest was just meh at best.
Good stuff but nothing special
Enjoyed this more than expected. Still feels childish
Let's get this out the way first. This might call itself punk, but do yourself a favour and listen to Wire: Pink Flag The Clash: Live at Shea Stadium Gang of Four: Entertainment and see what punk can really be. This is polished, slick and commercial. The political message is a bit obvious and tries to be angry, but doesn't bear comparison with Jello Biafra singing "Kill the Poor" And then it decides to be "Rock Opera" and, boys, this is no Quadrophenia. It's solid, well played, enjoyable rock posing as something that other people did better. Perfectly fine on its own terms, but with aspirations beyond its grasp.
I quite literally felt like I was living in 2004 during the listen - pure nostalgia. Loved it. 3.5
Solid album with some huge hits, gonna take a little more listens for me as I expected something different. To me it seems like punk, just more mainstream and more polished. Not like that raw punk for example dead Kennedys. Still solid tho
Ugh. Although I hate to hate on local Berkeley boys, I really dislike Green Day’s defanged and arena pop rock take on “punk.” I do have to give respect for the ambition of mounting a rock opera, resurrecting that hoary trope from the ‘70s and making it…I guess fresh? I did see it like 15 years ago and didn’t like that either. There are a couple tracks I like on here despite being curmudgeonly overall towards the hometown guys. Three
I predicted it had 13 tracks before listening to it. 3/5
I have tried to listen to punk music in the past and it just never resonates with me. I find this more enjoyable than early punk (Ramones, Black Flag, Misfits, etc.), but it still doesn't produce any lasting effect. The songs are repetitive throughout and even the chord progressions appear on multiple songs. Only the slower Give Me Novocaine and ending breakdown of Boulevard of Broken Dreams seemed to really break the power chord monotony for me. Maybe if i paid attention to the lyrics or message I would get more out of this, but that's not how I listen to music most of the time. People really seem to enjoy this and it's likeable enough to listen to when it comes across on a playlist, but it's nothing I will ever go out of my way to listen to.
I can't believe that this album is more than 20 years old, and no-one learned the lessons they were preaching.
I really wanted to like this album. I think Green Day get a lot of flack and I have a bit of a soft spot for them. I also genuinely like a lot of music that falls under the pop punk banner. I think this is a good gateway for a younger generation into punk music and I appreciate that. All that said I felt like this album was pretty hallow and repetitive.. I was waiting for a breakthrough moment where I could say to myself "see they aren't that bad!" But it never really came. I still think this album and this band deserve to be mentioned in the conversation of important and influential music of the past however many years... But this album under delivered for me.
Good album, I think it just got a little repetitive for me as we went through. Songs were long but had two sides to them. Some standouts include Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Give Me Novacaine/Shes a Rebel, and Wake Me Up When September Ends. Overall 3.5/5
I was going to riff on this but it does hold up as an ambitious pop-punk album with theatrical scope
This album came out the year after I had graduated high school and I don’t have the same nostalgic connection to it as some of us. I think of Green Day as being the dad to a whole bunch of goofy punk pop bands that followed them, and then with this album the dad is angrily trying to assert that the family is SERIOUS about politics just like Grandma and Grandpa were
A teenage classic, some of it is a bit cringe these days but I loved it when I was a kid! Took a nice trip down memory lane listening to it.
Not totally for me but I respect the cultural impact of the album Favourite songs: Wake Me Up When September Ends, Whatsername Special shoutout to Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams I love long songs
Late comers basically copycat british punk cleaned up for the us market. Well produced but im not 15 years old and ive heard it all before. Singer looks like bit of a tit.
Definitely their best album although listening to Green Day just makes me want to listen to the bands they copy. Totally understand why this would be a 5/5 for a younger listener.
Får 3 fordi Boulevard of broken dreams ga meg 5 på musikkprøven på ungdomsskolen.
Quality arena rock.
I forgot how hard some of these songs hit and I love how politically charged this album is, feels relevant to our current times.
yea its a fun album. good political commentary and again, its fun. 6.5/10
not really my style biut i really liked one song called psycho killer
I liked this more than I thought I would. Concept albums aren’t my thing and Green Day usually sounds very samey to me. But all of the things to like about Green Day are here with punk rock chord changes, breaks, and signature melodies
Ahhh, to be in college again. This albums evokes nostalgia, which is nice. Not sure I'd reach out for this though in future, I've outgrown this early 00s pop-punk-rock.
Nice album
Green Day is not for me. I can see how everyone in the 90's tried to copy them. I am glad I listened to it and I can see the appeal but it is not for me.
I never really liked Green Day but it's amazing how much my opinion is softened by (a) listening to a much worse punk-adjacent album right before this one and (b) the non-single tracks that are not overplayed x1000 on CHEZ et al.
The singles that came out from this album when it was released are all pretty good, especially boulevard. But the rest of them are uninspiring and just ordinary. Not sure why the songs are cojoined. I'll give a 3
I remember when I thought Green Day was punk. Some decent songs from my youth.
Very nostalgic
Awesome
Not a big fan of this type of music, but i enjoyed listening it
it was fine. had some bangers
It is kind of nice but I don’t think that I would listen to it. I knew 1 song.
Jesús of suburbia so catchy
I've never listened to any of their songs completly. The album started so good that the end didn't like me that much. I saved only two songs although there were four that I definitely will listen to again.
Solid album, brings back so much nostalgia but doesn’t really “do” anything for me
Not exactly my style in particular, but I like the classics Holiday, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and wake me up when September ends
A classic album, does a great job of telling a very political story - 3.5/5 album
It's good, I just think there are better ones
Bangers but drags a little.
I don't want to sound like an American Idiot here, because I understand that this album IS a rock opera, but it definitely sounds like "Broadway-Style" pop-punk. (I forget which song it was, maybe all of them, but I definitely could see Meatloaf singing it.)
Pas trop mal.
168 Wake me up when this album eeeends. Nah.
So this is Green Day's rock opera, and while I think this album's highlights are on par with my fav songs from Dookie, it's just a lot less consistent. It's got its fair share of classics like the title track, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up... and some other underrated cuts like St Jimmy, but it's not without its issues. First of all, a lot of the songs have production that feels kinda thin and unexciting. Dookie had so much gas in the tank with fire guitars and drumming, but many songs here just feel very toned down by comparison. I'm talking about songs like Are We the Waiting or Extraordinary Girl. Another issue is the songs that span 9+ minutes, I like a good long song but Green Day is just not really a band to pull that off. The concept is well executed and the band has a lot to say, but I wish the music was more consistent.
Fun but not my favorite Green Day
khá thích một vài bài, lyrics thú vị phết, nhưng melody wise not my style
Synes det har holdt seg bra. Aldri hørt plata fullt og helt ut.
this album was the turning point for this band. i get why people like it… but their mid 90s output is superior in every way. long from doesn't work for them. definitely overlong and cheesy at times. some good tracks layered throughout, though. probably their last decent album, for what its worth.
For a punk act, this is a pretty diverse album. I can see why it was made into a musical.
Buzz saw guitars and great vocals, pleasantly good.
In my opinion it’s the best album from Green Day
One of those albums that is a perfect version of what it's meant to be but doesn't do a lot for me. It's personal and social commentary but feels like the kid with no real issues in their life in the 2000s listen to this, Eminem, or System of a Down. Good composition and editing, good playing and singing. It's wild to believe this album would mean a ton to someone but I'm certain it does to millions. To each their own.
For me this is too long, but I'm sure the fans loved it. It's too processed for my liking. Feels like a bowl of sugary fruity breakfast cereal. The bits may have different colours but they all pretty much taste the same and lose their crunch after a while.
i lik
Didn’t listen to it fully but I like
Classic Brought me back to highschool. also brought me back to an emberassing cringy-edgeloard time in highschool. Holiday still a banger
Parte bene. Ma generalmente troppo artificiale e costruito
Mid. Liked Wake Me up When September Ends but nothing else really spoke to me.
3/5… it was good but not super my taste. I can appreciate it’s a good album tho
not a huge fan of this style - hugely influential but I'm also kind of an old-head when it comes to rock
I grew up listening to Dookie in my teenage years. That was the perfect album. 40 minutes of high energy and fun. As I grew up I never bothered to listen to their subsequent albums. There's some good songs on here and the messages seem as relevant now as they were then. But it could have been 20 minutes shorter. I'll stick with Dookie.
Good yes good
Technically, this is a comeback album (Dookie came out ~10 years prior) and an absolute smash. You can’t listen without thinking back to the Bush administration. Whether I like it or not, this album is a cultural touchpoint. And y’know what, it feels relevant as ever in 2025. Imagine telling Billy Joel after the album dropped, “Oh you think this is bad? Just wait”
Liked it more than expected. What’s up with all the paired songs?
Sort of Ramones/Kinks mash up makes for a fun album that my kids listened to in the car on many a trip.
