Reviews (page 11 of 15)
Good album. Some of Green Day’s best songs are here, but there’s a lot of filler too.
man this record really was all hits. green day at the top of their game, i bet it went.... gonna guess 5x platinum from wiki: "six times platinum status in the United States" track 8: Homecoming 9:19. should this song be this long? idk man lotta long songs on this record, but it's only 9 tracks. instinct says too long, but i like this one actually, not so repetitive as Stone Roses. Thanks Billie Joe & Co ugh fucking muse came on after this. they're so bad
pléonasme en dents de scie
Stadium anthemic pop punk that carries on the punk tradition of social commentary. Coming out post 9/11, during the Bush administration, its Green Day's take on the current state of America and the decay it sees in suburbia and the american psyche. Its a concept album, I assume, that has that steel thread of a american character passing through this place and time in history. Overall, good songs, better than my previous album of Coldplay, but they're all generic 90s/early-00s rock.
I don't know about this album. I liked Dookie a lot (pretty hot take there), but Green Day since then has never really landed for me. I don't think this album needed two 9 minute songs (he says as a fan of Rush & Tool). I think what saves it is a fond memory of my kid learning "Wake Me Up When September Ends" on guitar when they were little.
Was ok. 3.4
I’ve always felt I should enjoy Green Day more. This was no exception
This one's a classic, and hearing it today makes me feel weird. I do appreciates songs that have gotten older along with me, but I believe it was more a product of its age than a timeless piece of art. It's commercialized punk, which is the worst kind of punk, and it wants so bad to be more than it is. Sadly, I think that, like me, this album has aged a bit badly. If it was any other album it would have gotten a 2, but I'm giving it a +1 for nostalgia reasons and because I can't deny that the music on it is actually catchy, plus there are some hidden gems.
Was never really a huge Green Day fan, and American Idiot was the point where I lost interest in them. I appreciate what they're going for - and it felt pretty bold for a big mainstream album to be this politically focused in the 00s. Just not sure that musically it holds up well for me.
Surprisingly I like this. It has energy, ambition, the songs are punky in their instrumentation but tell a good sweeping story and when they get political are particularly strong.
Title track and Holiday / Boulevard are all good. The rest feels like filler; didn’t need to be almost an hour long
Previously rated: #102 - Dookie (3/5) *********************************** Album #980 A decent sounding album when that whiny, nasally bitch isn't singing. Did they really need two nine-minute epics on this album? Jesus of Suburbia was good, Homecoming was not. Favorite track: St. Jimmy
First 3 GD albums are my faves. This is fine.
One of the most influential Albums of the early 2000s, everybody knows it and can sing along. Sadly was a bit overplayed on radio, so it lacks a punch, it otherwise would have. DONT WANNA BE AN AMERICAN IDIOT
a very consistently good album, the hits are very iconic and a bit of vibes, great theming too. it's hard to justify why it doesn't personally ring with me as much as it should, with how much quality is here
Twenty years later, the meaning of this album is still as relevant as it ever was. The way that the American propaganda influences the average American in completely justifying the actions of the states is still completely evident. This album shines when they produce music that is meaningful. When it isn't the same energy and passion that they have for the more political songs is turned to a more soulless generic version of them that feels like it only exists to fill up nine to thirteen songs.
Not bad, worth a listen as per usual
Some excellent tracks but quite a few skip throughs. Better memory of the CD than the reality of recent listening.
Good album
Not bad but it’s another one of those albums, good in It’s day, that doesn’t warrant praise 20+ years on…
No importa si te gusta green day
I wouldn’t be the world’s biggest Green Day fan, but even I can admit there is a lot to like about this album. The title track is a barnstormer of an opener, and remains as relevant as it was 20yrs ago. I have always loved “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, feel it’s the album’s standout, and have always thought “Holiday” was very catchy and ear-wormy. It’s, largely, a brilliant and strong start to an album. However. “Jesus of Suburbia” does not need to be 9mins long and sound like four totally different songs. Bookending the album with another 9min track that does the same thing was unnecessary. I realise I’m probably the minority here, but I also never liked “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” The rest of the tracks I just had no opinion on.
I feel like I'm a bit too young for Green Day, never really got it tbh
Good album. Just not my favorite green day album
3 out of 5. Despite loving Green Day (up to Warning) I didn't like this album when it came out, especially the title track. Now after all this time I think it aged better than I thought it would.
I respect a decent rock opera. Still not my thing. Just polished punk rock that seemed to lose its feel. But big ups to Green Day for still fighting fascism after all these years.
It's fine. You can tell they really want this album to suceed and for the most part it does. It just gets a little repetitive and it tries to be more serious than it is. They can say faggot because they are identifying as one. The rest of the slurs really date this.
wake me up when this mediocre album ends
Tired of this lowkey
Good fun, though I’m well past my emo-phase.
I knew this album was coming at some point, lol... I liked the IDEA of it and I liked their message, but I was pretty sick of Green Day when this was released and the singles were quite over-exposed in the media I was consuming at the time so I disliked this album. Interested to see how about 20 years' distance has potentially changed that. MID-LISTENING: It has not. I really liked Green Day in college. But I was already getting a little sick of them by Nimrod (1997.) I still like the band, but their music all sounds the same to me now. I guess I've changed because it doesn't sound to me like they have. Part of the repeating bridge in "Jesus of Suburbia" ("It says 'Home is where the heart is' but what a shame,") reminds me strongly of Motley Crue's "On With the Show" off Too Fast for Love, followed by the next part ("City of the damned...") sounding a lot like "Summer of '69." Complaints about the American political climate of 2003-2004 seem so quaint now. This album SOUNDS like it was written with the specific purpose of becoming a Broadway musical, which of course it did (and according to Wikipedia, the band listened to the cast recordings of West Side Story, The Rocky Horror Show, Grease, and Jesus Christ Superstar while recording the album.) Ultimately I was planning to give this a 2.5, leaning closer to 2 than to 3. But then I woke up this morning to see that Dick Cheney died last night, which I interpreted as a sign to give this album a 3.
Kind of falls off after bobd. Those first four songs though (and wake me up when September ends)
I’m only semi- familiar with the song “American Idiot”. Haven’t heard any other Green Day besides this. Update post listening: I don’t love the grungy kind of music, but it’s not awful. Just not my taste.
I was expecting to like this more than I did. Dookie was a better album imo.
I hate ticketek dynamic pricing Fav song : holiday
I hated this album when it came out 20ish years ago. I’m still not a huge Green Day fan, but I listened to this record 3 times so I could really absorb. 1. It bugs me how many chord progressions are borrowed from existing songs. According to my source, BJA has openly stated he snagged them. 2. That being said, musically I love this album. Lyrically….meh. Concept? Boring and lame. Musically more up my alley than Dookie, but lyrically, Dookie is the shit.
I hate Green Day, not looking forward to listening. Hopefully some undiscovered gems. They made this into a stage musical after all. After listening: I can see why this translated well into a musical setting. Lots of musical tropes with a rockabilly twist. The best music I’ve heard from Green Day. Unlikely to listen to it again, but I’m impressed. 3.5 rating overall
Not bad but why do they rip off Brysn Adam’s „Summer of 69“? This is ridiculous!
Torn on this one, whilst it's not the sound I like, there is a high level of sophistication here in the song construction and overall concept. Just as I got bored during Jesus of Suburbia and was ready to give up on it the song flipped to a new form (it lasts for nearly 9 minutes and has 5 stages) and kept my interest for the rest of the album. That alone rewards it with 3 stars, as well as for "Wake Me Up" becoming an earworm for the day.
A really tough one to rate. On the one hand, it's clearly more complex and ambitious than "Dookie," and it's a well thought out, tight package. On the other, I kind of just...like it less? Maybe Green Day was just better suited for stupid fun pop-punk, and they really never needed to bother with trying to go deeper. Probably sacrilege for me to say, but it's how I feel at this point. I also think having seen the fucking god-awful stage musical version of this album didn't help me going into this. Fave tracks: - American Idiot - Jesus of Suburbia - Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Are We the Waiting / St. Jimmy - Wake Me up When September Ends - Whatsername - Too Much Too Soon - Shoplifter - Governator
Solid album
I thought I wasn't going to like this (yet another boring American poppy nu-metal band?) but it initially pleased me actually. By the end of the album my initial thoughts were confirmed though. Some fine songs/ earworms but all in all very plain and nothing I will deliberately listen to. It's just not very interesting.
not a fan of songs that feel never ending and there were quite a few on here. there was some enjoyable moments but overall didn’t love it didn’t hate it
Their seventh album. Punk Rock. The opening track, American Idiot and then Boulevard Of Broken Dreams are my two favourite songs from the album. I am just never convinced by how authentic Green Day really are though. Musically there are lots of power chords, some good bass playing and drums.
3+ Stars (9/15)
I think my opinion on this one may have been spoiled ahead of time by the hype! Although this is a good, solid pop-punk record with its concept reliably contributing to its unity rather than getting in the way, I think the baggage of its mythic critical status is going make a lot of new listeners feel disappointed. For me, 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' will never lose its 2000s school-slow-dance shine, and 'Homecoming' is the big highlight of the album...an unpredictable mashup of the album's most exciting ideas.
very iconic album, one of the most iconic from the 2000s. guaranteed you've heard at least half of these songs before
Power chord pop punk album that has some great energy that unfortunately feels very...in stasis. Like, it doesn't rise in energy, or give you a break, it's the same thing across the board, which is both a little tiring and a little boring. Sure, it has its slower parts (my god, jesus of suburbia and homecoming are ten minutes long and contain several songs within) but the [slavoj zizek voice] eneffable, indeshcribable sho-called quality of "energy" ish consistent and ineshcapable, like late-capitalishm and itsh internalizhed critiques. It definitely sounds like Green Day, but I have to say I don't love the turn from gen x wastrel to political demagogue simply because the lyrical content isn't really up to the task. It's aged well, but it was never very up to aging in the first place. It's kind of like a longer version of The Decline. So do I hate it? I dunno, I might? It's fine. Musically, it does what it says on the tin: catchy pop punk. Dookie was my first musical love and I was a bit too cool for this one when it came out, partly because I thought the political bent was kind of facile. Which I think I was right about, but probably for the wrong reasons. I have to give credit for attempting the rock opera, a format I struggle with, but I think it works here. Pretty cool to have work in a chiastic format, which always deserves some points, but still too clever by half. Ultimately, the whole thing feels a little superficial. Harsh 3.
Solid, 3.5.
-1 star for the musical
Cringe inducing in places but has a great sound
So I guess 9/11 did happen. Linkin park gave me hope
Ok
Solid album. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would since Green Day hasn't really been my thing. Are We The Waiting/St. Jimmy were really good songs.
As i remembered it. Quite good but got a bit samey
Decent album. I really like 2 songs on the album
Музыка: 8/10 Разнообразие: 5/10 Тематика и вайб: 8/10 Цепляемость (отдельные песни зашли): 6/10 Реиграбельность (можно ли рандомно врубить на фон): 7/10 Итог: 6.8
Didn't really think much of this. When described as a punk rock opera expected more.
Nth generation Integrity Punk meets Meat Loaf in a suburban mall about to shut down. This would make a great musical for people who like musicals, and it did! If I had an aggressively normcore teenager who suddenly glommed onto this, it would warm my heart.
Dookie is already on the list, so I don't see why we need that and this more mature/thematic album to get the gist. That said, Blvd of broken dreams has a great hook.
Green day makes really catchy "punk" music that at first you like, then think maybe you really shouldn't like it as it's so mainstream, but then deep down you know you will always turn up one of their songs while in the car and sing along.
If you were a suburban Midwestern American teenager in 2004 who thought wearing a studded belt and eyeliner was rad, this album probably means a lot to you. But in 2025 it's just a rather long and mostly uninteresting album which although undoubtedly ambitious, now just seems overwrought and not that imaginative. You've heard almost every single bar of it somewhere before. The production is particularly horrible - over-compressed, flat and monotonous (unbelievably, the producer won a Grammy for it). It starts as it means to go on, and after ten minutes I was longing for it to end. The singles are the best bits, especially 'Boulevard of Broken Dreams'. It's not that the material is bad exacly, it's just not very original and is presented so one-dimensionally that it loses all potency. Would not listen again, 3/5
Honestly probably not even Green Day’s best album, and Green Day has a pretty hard ceiling in terms of rating
So wildly overrated at one point that I think it's now somewhat underrated.
I'm not going to listen to this. I'm aware of Green Day. Three stars?
i liked it, but as always with green day it felt a little monotonous for my taste
Pretty mid, Jesus of Suburbia drags down the entire listening experience
It has some good hooks, but it's a product of it's time. Like protest albums from the late 60s, it has an element that feels dated. Some applaud political statements. But overt sentiments anchor the songs in a in an era most don't even think of anymore.
Album starts off so hot with a ton of classics that honestly, still describe todays time. It does fall hard and fast though as plenty of later songs in the album simply do not sound good anymore.
Aldri vært noen stor fan av denne. Blir for mye øs pøs.
Solid record. Some great songwriting, fun green day pop punk feel and even some innovative new sounds as they branch into more different types of stadium rock. I admire some of the ambition of this record. I have reservations though. I'm not crazy about the progy concept album rhapsody style pieces. I like the ambition but they don't quite land for me and I want green day to be pure green day. The production is also slightly difficult. Guitars and drums sound really great if comically over compressed. Bass gets a bit lost (which is a huge loss to green day!) The vocals are most challenging though. Heavy heavy effects (maybe a bit of autotune?) just take me out of that punky space I want to be in
Some surprisingly good melodic parts brought down by the horribly annoying singles.
Surprised!
It's not bad. I am not a huge fan of his voice, but the balls it took to be the public image against Iraq war post 9/11. I remember the music video for Wake Me Up... and it was all imagery about the war and the young Americans paying the price for it. Good for Green Day to have made this happen, and to have a deeper substance than most of the music out at this time.
Far too much of this Is ruined, I can't listen. And Dookie better.
Really like it
Filled with many of the songs they are most known for. Definitely Green Day grows up and plants their flag in the sand.
Eu tinha um certo preconceito com esse álbum. Ouvindo agora ele todo e em um fone de qualidade, tenho que admitir que é um bom disco com algumas faixas muito boas. CVJ Neko.
Mid not my vibe
3.85/5 Couple of fantastic tunes but not the easiest to sit through and listen to in its entirety just on my preference but can easily see why people hold it high up.
i was fucking with the latter half a lot and completely lost interest at the last song. like in a boner killer way. surprised i connected with green day though, used to be my least favorite band growing up.
I've known about this record for a long time and only just have now listened to it through. I feel like I would have gotten into it more if I had a better ear for lyrics rather than just the music. But honestly, I'm impressed with the amount of arrangement and progressions that went into this - I hadn't expected nearly as much with their pop punk reputation.
To me, this just sounds like My Chemical Romance or other similar pop-punk-alternative from the 2000's. There is definitely a lot of polish and slick hooks, but it doesn't feel as raw as I'd want or as exploratory in the music. I'd give it a 3.5, but I really struggle to give it a 4. Maybe it would grow on me, but at this point, I just feel like it speaks to people that it really only feels like an elevated piece of work to people that really like pop-punk and the 2000's (not really) "emo" music.
It was fine
it was kinda ass despite it being a popular album
This album is a little bit overrated but it's fun
The safest version possible of The Misfits. Same sense of melody mixed with loud rock band but it much more orchestrated and produced. Great drum performances but the overall mix pulls back at points - see Novacaine. Overall a very fun, melodic concept record that is an overall package and not just a bunch of songs.
I hadn’t seriously listened to Green Day since the distant days of "Dookie". Although I'm not against skate-punk and pop-punk on paper, GD have always been a bit too much on the pop side even for me, so they’re clearly not my favorite in this subgenre (I’d rather listen Offspring or Bad Religion any day of the week) . I still enjoyed this album though ; it's more mature than their early works, without losing too much of their former energy. Some good songs, some less interesting stuff... A weird mix of 2-minutes and 9-minutes tracks... Nothing groundbreaking, but all in all a nice feel-good album to work by on a sunny afternoon. 6/10
oh wow, i don't think i've ever listened to more than a couple of Green Day's songs. this should be good. familiar with a couple of the songs on this album. edit: liked it! some of the songs were nostalgic, especially the more known ones.
This was a 2.5 album but it's better than Bonnie Prince Billy and I really like "Wake Me Up Before September Ends." Now that this album is 21 years old and not overplayed on the radio, I can appreciate it a bit more--"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" was played ad nauseam. This is simple Green Day: the songs are all mostly very easy and repetitive. Top Tracks: "Wake Me Up Before September Ends," "Holiday" (omitting the Boulevard part)
Rv/g
Meh
Didn't know their songs are sooooooo long. 3.5 3 - for how I liked it, 0.5 - for my bias, cause the band is famous
2.8* Radio friendly Bad Religion.
rocksito de mi epoca, no es mi favorito
This was a lot better than I expected, I didn’t think I’d enjoy this album but I actual did
ich kannte erstaunlich viele lieder, dafür dass ich die band nur vom namen kenne. am liebsten mochte ich holiday und wake me up when september ends. nicht unbedingt etwas was ich jetzt hören würde, aber ich war auch nicht abgeneigt.
found it odd that a lot of the songs were 2 tracks smashed together, didn't think that concept worked overall, otherwise was alright, not their best, wouldn't bother going back for another listen
I'm going to take a guess and say that this is probably Green Day's most commercially successful album. I never got too much into Green Day. They always seemed to have a bit of an obnoxiousness to them. Kudos to them on this one though. Lots of range in the song writing and Billy Joe has some pretty catchy melodies. It sounds pretty slick and marketable. I imagine this one definitely got some mortgages paid.
One gets the appeal – fresh and clean-sounding punk [or punky power pop], mall-friendly, and equally tuneful and bouncy – without much digging. Certainly, one sees how suburban adolescents might've embraced this as their summer soundtrack and how it might sound good years later, but one wasn't such an adolescent and thought, when this lot came long, that they were overrated and that fans claiming them as some great rock and roll or punk rensacence (or whatever) were badly misguided. One prefers the slower/sweeter tunes (“Novocaine,” “When September Ends”) but maybe only because one's a tame and quiet-minded oldster. Each generation gets the Ramones it deserves, though GD seems to have been more comfortable with large-scale commercial success posing as anti-commercial statements.
On tuttujakin biisejä. Tykkään laulajan ulosannista ja bändin soitosta. Oikein hyvä levy
It’s an ok album - all songs are listenable, but just ok - nothing standout throughout
I really had very low expectations going in to this one, I am familiar with a few of their songs from radio and thought they were tolerable but not really a fan. I thought this was pretty decent though if not terrible memorable. I didn't really catch the story behind the concept but following along with lyrics probably would help. His voice is unique and I thought I would tire of it by the end but it was ok - musically it's pretty straight forward rock but there are some more interesting bits mixed in. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. It might get played again if the mood strikes. Not sure what mood that would be but unlike a lot of stuff on this list, it goes into a maybe category and I didn't completely rule it out.
No bad track. No track that get me hooked
I don't want to sound like an American Idiot here, because I understand that this album IS a rock opera, but it definitely sounds like "Broadway-Style" pop-punk.
It’s ok. I think if it wasn’t Green Day, and it wasn’t “supposed” to be punk, I might like it more. It’s just so out of character for them. It’s not bad, it’s just not what I’m looking for in a punk record. Give me dookie anyday.
It’s well made and the production is top notch. That being said, it’s an ambitious album with the whole rock opera take. I just like my punk not pop punk, and not so polished and perfect.
#108 - total classic but not 100% my vibe
Green Day look like a nice bunch of lads. Music is fun, well played. I don't ever feel like putting it on, but I'm not going to get upset if I hear it.
Solid album. Not something I'd listen to on my playlist per say.
Green Day is great. But not that great. Nothing bad to say but not good enough.
Don't want to be a MAGA idiot.
Love Green Day! But I think their last best great album was nimrod. Warning was good and this just is the same. American Idiot single hits as does a few others but honestly it's kind of a boring album to me. 3 stars maybe be too much but I will always have a special place in my heart for this band for the early days
Really fun. A lot of duds for me but fun ride through iPod memory lane
I think it’s pretty good, though a bit long. I think I liked the first half of the album better than the second half, I feel like the second half just sounded a bit repetitive and it was harder for me to follow the storyline. Solid album, though, probably approaching 3.5.
Some absolutely undeniable songwriting but I’m not in love with every track here. Dookie is my favorite Green Day album and I hope it’s included on this list as well but I get why this has the status that it does. Boulevard, Holiday, Jesus of Suburbia, and Wake Me Up are all phenomenal and the concept is pulled off pretty well. I just wish the album had a stronger middle section as that’s where I feel it falls off some.
classic. not particularly my taste but such a solid album
Would not buy
I was already a Green Day fan, prior to American Idiot's release, but this was my first *new* Green Day album. As such, I ate it up and listened to it religiously. Two decades later, this album isn't as powerful. It marks a turn for Green Day's career toward more pop and arena focused tunes that alienated a lot of their older fanbase. Likewise, the success of this album caused a lot fatigue toward songs like "Holiday" "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", and "Wake Me Up When September Ends" that all received egregious airplay. As a concept album, it's a little clumsy and pretentious, which makes re-listens difficult. Tracks like "St. Jimmy", "Homecoming" and "Jesus of Suburbia" come off as a bit cheesy and are difficult to listen to. However, American Idiot isn't without some charm. The title track ("American Idiot") is still fun, even if it's a little misguided in its message. "Are We The Waitiing" proved Green Day could write a power ballad, but a consistent problem is that everything on this record sounds bigger, even when it's not necessary. A perfectly fine record. There's a pretty decent case to be made about it be essential (it probably is), but it's an album I could take or leave.
A classic. Not my intro to rock but maybe an elective class during my sophomore years. Didn't listen in full this time around though. 6.5/10, would probably have rated it higher 10 years ago.
É um álbum com um conceito legal, mas infelizmente é performado pelo Green Day. Risos a parte, só consegui gostar dos já famosos singles. Posso também apontar que o começo de Jesus of Suburbia é bom, e She's a Rebel também.
Is it the best from green day? Myslalem ze ich nie lubie
This is mostly rocky fun.
I'm predisposed to dislike Green Day because I saw them as poseurs compared to real punk bands like Dead Kennedys and Black Flag. That said, I've mellowed to them as I've gotten older and actually like some of their tunes. This album imo, while better produced, more rangy, and stronger as a concept, is more in the poseur direction. Credit where it's due, they are a tight, skilled group that can write a hook.
Standouts American Idiot Holiday Boulevard of Broken Dreams Wake Me Up When September Ends
I was familiar with most of this album. September ends is one of the most overplayed songs ever behind only Californication. Green Day debut album was right thing right time right place. This one not so much. 3/5
Solid, couple of bangers, great production. I'd forgotten how good green day are. (My god to I hate wake me up when September ends though).
This is one of the first albums I've received on 1001 Albums that I was already familiar with, and it's a tough one for me. I love early Green Day, but this album came out during a time of strong political opinion and issues (much like today). What differs for me personally is that I was much younger and didn't want to be involved in politics. The media was seemingly overbearing and I used music as an escape from it all, so to have an album like this come out from one of my favorite bands at the time felt frustrating to young me (oh the privilege). All this to say: I do not have fond memories of this album, and had to try and reset and give it a fair shake twenty years later. If there is one thing American Idiot is not, it's subtle. Very clear in their disdain for the American military involvement in the Middle East and the Republican leadership of the time (George W Bush), as well as the wave of xenophobia that swept the US after 9/11. With hindsight, hard for me to disagree with their take, and it's shocking that they are seemingly quieter with the current administration. Musically, I still don't think this is their strongest effort. In their desire to make their feelings known, they lost of a lot of the cleverness to their lyrics from previous albums. Some of the music feels derivative (I still, to this day, can't hear "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" without wanting to override the lyrics of "Wonderwall" by Oasis). A lot of the lyrics wouldn't fly today either, even when used intentionally to show the bad intent of others, and it's a bit jarring. It's not as bad of an album as my memory wants it to feel like, and I'm glad I gave it another shake, but still don't think "based on the quality of the music" that it's a fantastic album. It's not a bad album, and it has an important part in music history, but still think Green Day has done better.
Pretty overrated
man patika, bet biskin vienveidīgi
Classic punk, love the band.
I guess they call this pop-punk, but to me it's slickly-produced hard rock showtunes. It's even got a power ballad. I guess I see the charm but honestly it makes me laugh.
Good nostalgia hit. Damn those songs are long
I was somewhat hopeful that this would be the equivalent of the Clash doing the Who’s Quadrophenia. Instead, it was typical Green Day ranging from the great (“American Idiot”) to the mundane (“Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends”). I’m sure the latter is what gives them the freedom to do the former. But it makes it difficult for me to call myself a fan. 2.5* rounding up.
at one point it seemed to me like it was all one very long 57 minute song, but it must have been the heat 3,5/5 💣
Starts out really strong but loses its footing in the latter half (outside of Wake Me Up When September Ends)
Thematically cohesive but it does kinda drag. Blvd of broken dreams will always be my favorite, and give me novocaine is the underrated gem in this album.
This is a decent pop rock album. I don’t love it, but I don’t hate it either. Maybe I like it a bit more now than I did when it was first released.
About half of this record is good pop punk. And that’s what Green Day is really best at. The rest, I get what they were trying for but it doesn’t appeal to me.
Despite being a decent fan of Green Day in the 90s -- especially Dookie and Nimrod -- I kind of felt like this album was a "jump the shark" moment for the band when it came out. I felt like they'd abandoned their punk ethos in favor of trying to be the punk Meat Loaf or something. Not to mention, while they were always sort of pop-punk, they were more pop then punk now. I was probably a little harsh on it when it came out because I do think there's some good stuff here. I think it particularly starts strong -- the title track, "Jesus of Suburbia", "Holiday", and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" are all pretty solid bangers. From there though, I think it's a bit of a mixed bag. I think the rest of the songs kind of range from just okay to not very good. And while the multi-part rock opera stuff is certainly ambitious, sometimes it works ("Jesus of Suburbia") and sometimes it's a flop ("Homecoming"). The album does end on a good note with "Whatsername", but overall, I don't think the album's execution quite matches its ambition. 3.5 stars.
3.5
Landmark 00s rock opera that at 57 minutes is more like an extended Nickelodeon TV special than a proper fully fledged Broadway piece. There are a trio of actual classic singles on this but outside of those three good songs, the album is more of a big tarpit of mediocre, melodically samey pop punk that oozes with a slightly different riff or time signature every two minutes. Lots of oppressively dull multi-part tracks and album experience is a bit like “fed up of this boring sludge now… ooh Boulevard Of Broken Dreams is on, yippee… fed up of this boring sludge now… ooh Wake Me Up When September Ends yippee!
Dookie is better. Unfortunately I have to subtract a point for this album containing one of my WOAT songs: Boulevards of Broken Dreams
I was 18 when this came out and I couldn't escape it. The songs were EVERYWHERE. I wasn't a fan of it back then mainly because I really loved early Green Day which thisbis a big departure from and the audio fatigue of the singles in this album. 20 years removed, this is a super catchy album with really no bad songs. Lyrically, much of this comes across as faux outrage from an angsty teen. Album is super polished and over produced which can be a selling point for some, but not my thing.
Bombastic but enjoyable
Some good moments on this but not really my cup of tea. I get the feeling that they were trying too hard to be radical
Hard to deny how culturally significant the album is (especially now more than ever) but I think Green Day bit off more than they can chew here. All the singles are great, but it quickly drowns in its own ambition to tell some kind of thematic story. If this was a 6-7 track EP it might be something close to a perfect record.
i would love this if i was 13 I mean that in the nicest way possible
I hated this when it first came out because it’s more Nickelback than punk rock but hearing it 20 years later it’s not that bad.
There’s a lot of love for this. People on this site seem to rate it highly. 3.76 as @ June 2025 is a strong score for an album…I’m just personally not feeling it as much as others. I get that it’s trying to say something, but ‘American Idiot’ just feels like it goes forever and after a while the songs all sound the same to me, diluting its message.
Ну, не слушаю такое
An enjoyable listening experience to a genre of music that I enjoyed once upon a time but the feeling has passed. Favorite Songs: American Idiot / Boulevard of Broken Dreams
One of the few albums I enjoyed as a kid that actually wasn't a flaming pile of garbage. It's not a magnum opus by any means. However, with what passes as marketable pop punk post-Green Day, this is a paragon of quality in comparison. Also, guys can we stop with the wake up this guy after September jokes. Homies dad literally died. 7/10 Favorite Song: Give Wake Me Up When September Ends
Bops but not ones I would feel the need to revisit
It is what it is.
I like the usual suspects that have been overplayed but I wasn't thrilled with the rest of the album.
loses a star for no bookmobile
It's a pretty good high energy album. I'm not particularly in to Green Day but I see the appeal and liked this album when it came out. Well arranged songs with good drum work, political, and good mix between heavier guitar and light rock/ folkyness. This app has now fed us "the idiot" and "American Idiot" albums. Is it sending us a message?
I was halfway through this album, not really enjoying it, until I remembered this was supposed to be a conceptual musical/play soundtrack. Once I locked in with that and created some imagery in my head, it became more enjoyable. “Know Your Enemy” is fun. What is it about Billie Joe’s voice that makes it ripe for Weird Al parodying in every song?
I struggled to determine how to rate this album. I still like the singles, they were the soundtrack to my adolescence. There is a familiarity to them that’s hard to shake. There is also something to be said about the creativity of a punk opera. But at the same time it makes some of these songs boring and makes the whole album kind of boring over all. The use of various words that are now considered slurs makes it a lot harder to talk about what a cultural touchstone. I understand they wanted to emphasize that they were the out group, but it just feels dated and uncomfortable now.
Solid album. 3 pieces bands are always super tight and interesting.
Aah, from a more innocent age when we thought the US electing George W. Bush was hitting rock bottom. Has anyone else noticed that the second half of Jesus of Suburbia sounds like a mash up of All the Young Dudes and Summer of 69?
Busy yesterday. Do not feel I gave this album the attention it deserved. I did like a couple of songs however
5/10 Listen, we all like the hits - boulevard of broken dreams & american idiot are iconic, I can't deny that. But i had higher hopes, they use a very samey structure to a lot of songs and it started to feel like a chore. Long live Dookie. Songs added to playlist: - American idiot - Boulevard of broken dreams
Based
It’s got some hits. Holiday is and will always be my fav. Didnt realize allllll their big singles were this album. Doesn’t age all that well for me but not offensive in any way and generally glad I revisited.
It was alright.
All down hill since dookie
Two Green Day albums in a row… I have nothing useful to say about them; it's not bad, just not something that I'd care to actually revisit, or even inspect more closely.
Surprised to like this more than when it came out originally.
Not on board with everything here but there’s a few bangers
Manchmal bisschen lame Lieblingslied: St.Jimmy Unliebstes Lied: Are we the waiting
7/10
Raising awareness about American idiocy. Unfortunately not able to stop the spread. Nice try though.
It was an interesting mix of a few hits or near misses. and some stuff that was very forgettable
Lots of recognizeable stuff here, and individually, it's not bad, but its all kinda the same and my ears got tired before the end of the album. High 3.
3.5/5
This album just never did it for me. Hot topic punk. That was the genre I loved the most back then too. I don't dislike all Green Day, but never got big into this album. All that being said, I respect the popularity they gained from this and the broadway show. 3/5.
4, 7, 11, 13
Green Day’s attempt at prog. Very front loaded. Some good songs but trails off in the back half. Ambitious but doesn’t 100% work. OK but could’ve been great.
Very nostalgic, 15 yo Ninske
Not nearly as fun as their early stuff
I remember when this album came out the discourse among my peers was that Green Day "sold out." This was no longer music for losers: Green Day is popular now - time to go back to Bad Religion, The Offspring, NOFX etc. It's funny the lines you draw in your teenage years. This is the first time I've listened through the entire album. I, of course, heard all of the singles. You couldn't avoid them - always clogging up Fuse's music video lineup. The sound aged exactly how I thought it would. It's very much of it's time, and I think that's what makes it an interesting listen. I still prefer Green Day's earlier work.
Harrowing political commentary and highly polished punk feel like such a strange combination to me, which might be part of why this album made such a big splash. It honestly always felt a twinge naïve to me, but maybe I'm even more jaded than most 😅

Okay
Iconic. Not, however, good.
Objectively great but there's something about the 200s emo rich sound that I just find off-putting. Good to listen to though.
My first selection from the aughts. I think of them as on the better end of radio alternative in the 90s. They are a minor artist. I appreciate them putting in this effort, it's pretty good. (Theme: I appreciate effort.) Another where Must Hear is not quite true. Top marks for the cover art.
56/1001 - Some cool melodies here and there but I wish it was played by better musicians.
The lyrics and theme feel kind of detached from me. Tones are good but something is somewhat sterile production-wise.
The world would not be worse of without this record as musically there's nothing here you wouldn't have heard elsewhere beforehand, albeit probably in a less watered down way. Then again every generation shall have their copycat history-repeating acts. Hey, there was a time I believed Sha Na Na were a relevant contribution to music history. Regarding their overal global pop market conquering strategies Green Day certainly proved themselves to be winners. It just doesn't make the music any more original. Well done and of relevance for quite a few people I guess so that#s an extra star from me for that.
it's good. too bad I'm bad at paying attention to lyrics and their meaning. I'm sick of hearing "Wake Me Up When September Ends"
someone once told me that I remind them of the song Holiday from this album and I don’t know how to feel about that honestly
I’m not going to pretend I’m a longtime Green Day hater, Dookie was one of the first CDs I bought. That said I don’t love this album, but it’s not that bad either. Classic 3 stars, I think Green Day’s best songs are their snotty punky stuff and there just isn’t enough of that on this album for me.
My wife loves this album. I’m lukewarm on it. But I’ve always been fairly lukewarm on Green Day in general. Y’all ever heard of Rancid? If not, go give them a listen…
I mean, I kinda hate to say this -- this is a pretty good album in my eyes.
Great album I think this is their best!
listened before, some good songs but not my favorite genre
Naim seems to like it
Liked mostly because of nostalgia but Dookie is better
The songs here just don’t do as much for me as the ones on Dookie. Certainly more conceptual and daring, but not particularly better.
12 year old me thought Dookie was the shit (pun intended) for its anger and punk sensibilities, by the time American Idiot appeared, 22 year old me thought this was pop punk at its most anodyne, bland and mainstream and i had nothing but youthful distain for it. Coming back now was a really interesting experience. It still is pop punk with every edge rounded off, its music a left wing politician claims to like when they dont like music and your mum would gladly sing along on Radio 2. However, i cant deny that they can write a jaunty pop tune with a decent hook. Most impressively, this album is littered with lyrics that resonate now (start of Trump 2) more than ever. For that reason im giving it a binus star and hope it gets more play.
This is pretty good, not really for me but there are a few really solid songs on here.
I’m more of a dookie fan but fun album.
Wasn’t hugely impressed by this, largely blended into one. However, Holiday / BoBD is still stunning, what a transition. For that reason it’s a 3/5
Expected to give this a 2 or lower, but it’s a 3. Had only heard the singles back in the day - didn’t even realise Holiday was from American Idiot. Managed to miss Greenday completely in my punk phase, I guess because the narrative was they’d already gone commercial? It’s an ok album, never really boring.
Only really enjoyed 2 of the 4 songs I knew. But can’t really deny the success of those 4 smash hits. Curious how I would’ve felt about them if I hadn’t heard them so many times on the radio before today. Dookie was the first album I ever bought with my own money, and will at least get 4 if not 5 stars if it comes up. This just seems way more commercially produced and frankly not as good. Still I can’t say it wasn’t listenable.
american idiots
I’m just glad Billie Joe and Dick Cheney made up and are now on the same team! Music - 3.75 How punk are they - 0.00
I like the record and obviously have added one song to my repeat list. But it doesn't register as a fantastic record to me.
Oh hey it's Green Day. Wow they are very popular. For me, this album is ok, I do enjoy a concept American Idiot is a great opener and I did enjoy Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams. Wake Me up When September Ends has a nice vide but the rest of it is pretty mediocre.
Solid. Dependable, consistent enough.
Classe one at this point. Not as good as Dookie, but it’s still a good album 3 stars
A few slurs in this eh? I appreciate that I got this right before Trump’s 2nd inauguration and the launch of his shitty meme coin. Fuck Trump and the Oligarchy including his billionaire puppet masters. 3.23
Mainstream Punk at its best.
Fun, hot and reminds me of teenage times
As good as you can expect from a middle aged punk band.
an emo essential
not my fav green day album
I enjoyed much more while I was younger, still worth a listen, it's aged better than I have.
Solid song craft and power pop. They are no longer punk as far at this point. Sellouts.
I really liked whatshername
First listen. Not bad, just not my cup of tea.
Some nice melodies, but also some very cheesy lyrics. It's hard to take seriously at times.
One of my favorite albums to listen to from start to finish. The broadway musical is great as well!
I'll parrot Mic the Snare by saying that this album has lost a bit of its lustre with overplay, and personally it gets a bit sonically repetitive, but its lyrical ambitions are evident and still hit hard nowadays. I really need to listen to it more than once to fully get into it, but for now, it's a very well put-together pop punk album.
Not bad, some classics
Green Day again. Kings of pop punk, I guess. If Green Day is good at anything it’s bringing people with bad music taste together. Is this really what the people want? A pop punk band full of mediocre musicians making political statements? One bright spot is “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” with the cool guitar.
I do enjoy some Green Day and this is no exception. Credit for having a punk rock album where 4 songs are 7:30+ minutes long. Huge hits in American Idiot, Holiday, Wake Me up When September Ends. 6.5/10 (3.25/5)
When it comes to pop punk-operas, you could do worse. You could certainly do a lot better too.
Better than the sum of it's parts. I could go my life without hearing "Wake Me Up When September Ends" or "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" again, but the rest of the album fits together well.
Safe, commercial teenage angst
Album is not very musically interesting. I was growing sleepy by the end of it. The political commentary is milquetoast at best. I will grant it a 3 because it has some banger tracks: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Letterbomb", "American Idiot".
It’s good. I recognize and remember it’s importance, but just don’t like it that much.
A punk rock opera, huh? I think I might disagree. I applaud the ambitiousness of this album but, good god I can't stand the way Billie Joe Armstrong sings. Really most of the pop-punk bands from back in the day, the vocals are all trash. This album was huge when it came out. I mean didn't they make a Broadway show off of this? No comment on the irony of that.... As with a lot of the other stuff from Green Day, I actually like the music fairly well. It's interesting, decently recorded, varies from song to song. But the vocals are just tough for me. Lyrically I think it's ok, a little simple and on the nose but not bad I suppose. I appreciate the message at least. Green Day is a band that I wish I liked more, I just don't. Mostly because of the vocals, I just can't get on board. Generous 3/5
Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake me up when September ends carried this for me. Honestly I expected to like it a little more than I did, this one just did not click with me as much as Dookie did. Solid but I wasn't floored
American Idiot 3.2 Jesus of Suburbia 3 Holiday 3.3 Boulevard of Broken Dreams 3.1 Are We the Waiting 3 St. Jimmy 2.8 Give Me Novacaine 3 She's a Rebel 3 Extraordinary Girl 3.1 Letterbomb 3.3 Wake Me Up When September Ends 3.3 Homecoming 3.4 Whatsername 3.1 Score: 3.123076923
Pretty good. Felt a bit repetitive at times though. Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams is an all-timer
The production is too shiny for my taste. The songs too poppy, too earnest. BUT. This has heart and spirit. It has ambition. Will I listen to the whole thing again? No. Do I respect it for its heart, spirit and ambition. Yes.
I can see why this is a cultural touchstone for so many people, but it was not original in its commentary then, especially now. The songs are annoying at times, and the catchy hooks lose their pazazz after the constant repeating of them. the strongest point of this album is the start where all the big singles are and a couple more near the end.
This is a timely album, because Trump was re-elected 2 days ago and I also don’t want to be an American Idiot or a part of the “redneck agenda”. The pace is fun and the long pop-punk songs with movements have a soft spot in my heart. Unltimately, it doesn’t fit my taste these days, but I respect it.
Kind of better than I expected, but also just kind of OK. I did like how Spotify combined the tracks, I guess? It made things flow well.
Very well made. The production is top notch and the lead vocalist has very impressive vocal control, but its almost a little too clean. Best Song: Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams Worst Song: Whatsername
A lot of bangers, it was a fun listen and the themes explored are interesting and engaging. The problem is that it gets too one dimentional and therefore bluring the line between many of the songs when the tempo and riffs are so similar. Best song: Holiday / Boulevard of Broken Dreams Worst song: Extraordinary Girl / Letterbomb
Expectations were so low after the last Green Day album but after the reaffirmation that they're a pop band (this is not punk), it began to make a bit of sense. Nothing great, but way better than Dookie, at least.
I don't normally consider myself a Green Day fan, but this album was quite good!
Favorite tracks: American Idiot, Holiday, Give me Novacaine. Angsty. Nostalgic. Not entirely my thing anymore.
This a strong three. I admire the ambition I just don't think it sticks the landing
Quite enjoyed this to be honest 7/10
Super
Flirts with pop punk line Banging out radio hits While still protesting
1) много слёров, хм, 2) он на удивление правильно интонирует, 3) панк и совсем не для меня, 4) но когда медляки начинаются это ещё ничего
Good vibes of rebellion. Enjoyed it a lot. Lots of popular unforgettable songs. Shifted my mood for the day!
I don't like this much, but I could at least tap my foot and hum along to it pleasantly. I don't want to like it, but it's had so much airplay that I know it. I want to give it one star because it's got the feel of something cynically manufactured for the teen buck, but somewhere there's someone like me for whom this is their Nevermind, London Calling or Appetite For Destruction.
This was a rock album that sold like a pop album. I listened to the CD on repeat back in the day, but I've grown up and it hasn't
fan of green day, not boulevard of broken dreams. i have trauma w that song also why is my guy moaning in my ear during it pls stop and just play the music bro.
I don’t really love Green Day a ton, but this album definitely holds up
Decent band, so unlikable as people
It’s ska
Not a big Green Day guy but this ones pretty alright
Political Punk!?!
Loved Dookie at the time but I've never actually sat all the way through American Idiot before. It's alright.
I found this to be pretty much just ok across the board. It’s perfectly acceptable, entertaining arena rock.
2,5
A little overplayed but it was a real statement when it was released.
Has some bangers, but I’m just not a greenday girl
it’s green day duhhh my teenage childhood!
I kind of get it, didn't do much for me.I did like american idiot when it came out but it's wild it inspired so many people.
They make me cringe so much Saying that, some rammers I really enjoyed: American idiot Jesus of suburbia Holiday Wake me up when September ends Will not be listening again but objectively good album !
By the time this album came out I had already soured on Green Day and the pop-punk/Gilbert and Sullivan hybrid was a big turn off for me. It’s still not my thing, but there is some strong songwriting on this.
This album reminds me of winter in Cannes when it came out it. Coincidentally I was in Cannes when it came up in the list. Some Jungian synchronicity shit going on there.... The music is alright like. The way the songs seamlessly meld into one another is a bit weird.... At the time it was a bit weird hearing Americans show any anti American sentiment, so that was cool.
Modern classic.
One of the songs was a bit long but these were highly enjoyable. A few iconic ones but the others are easily forgettable. I like the callbacks of some of the songs & also not a fan of “American idiot” the single
Classic. Can't help but think of Michael and David when I listen to green day ha
I liked it
Ok, I know several hits of this album and I like them, but listening to the whole album is to much, mainly because many of the other songs sound a bit the same to me. I listened the punk rock of the 70's, so most of the songs on this album don't sound 'new' to me.
Anytime this record comes up in conversation (with friends, strangers, my husband), I always say, "it was a landmark record for my sixth-grade class." It's true. Released by Green Day in 2004, 'American Idiot' was possibly the first time my peers and I were swept up in an album cycle that attempted to reflect The Times We Are Living In. Radio singles, interviews, a tour, and an overall buzz in the air, the look of the album serving as a signal of identity. As Robert Christgau says, the visual language on this album is probably the most essential factor in understanding it, especially during its release within a context of a burgeoning pop-punk emo scene that rendered style and artifice over any meaningful substance (be honest). A stark red, white, and black album cover (ostensibly an homage to Saul Bass' title sequence for 'The Man With The Golden Arm') and smoky music videos that played around with colour saturation settings. One such music video was basically a short film with a (pointless) prelude featuring scripted dialogue between Hollywood actors. The album was huge. Starting with the title track, it was anthemic, and operatic, with huge aspirations even if the actual message itself was vague and riddled with a few clichés. Still, Green Day was able to harness the genuine rage and despair of the time and make a song that was genuinely upbeat and fun while retaining subversion. As Christgau pointed out, it "makes being called 'f-----' something to aspire to, which in this terrible time it is." I credited Green Day with producing something with huge aspirations, but to me, most of those aspirations do fall flat. "Jesus of Suburbia" is a good example of this. Did you know that he is our main character in the Odyssey that is 'American Idiot?' Do you even care? Well let me tell you: I don't. And so, while I appreciate a punk band experimenting with a multi-movement song in 2004, it ultimately does not stick. "Holiday," on the other hand, is a fine song and certainly my favourite off the record. The opening guitar has such a sweet, crisp tone that reminds you of these guys SoCal punk bona fides. A great lyrical showcase from Billie Joe Armstrong, who I believe is especially powerful when writing about dogs (please see my review of 'Dookie'): "hear the dogs howl out of key/to a hymn called faith and misery" which is then followed by a well-timed and satisfying "hey!" The call-and-response on this song is a wonderful touch. "Can I get another amen? Amen!" Was there even a first one? No, not in the song at least, but you know everything Billie Joe is saying is true. Is so. Un fait accompli. What is meant by the use of the word 'holiday' here? The idea of being on holiday, or out to lunch, or just spiritually not there, particularly resonates in the Bush-era as our politics increasingly became devoid of facts and data. I wonder if the boys in Green Day stopped to consider whether "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" would be a mainstay in the waiting offices of doctors across the globe. The song has powerful soft-loud dynamics that beautifully channel angst and loneliness, even if the lyrics are a bit sophomoric and goofy. The final 40 seconds or so when guitars start to sound like gusts of wind are exceptional. I can't say that my attention remains as close for the rest of the record as it does here. The transition into "She's A Rebel" is a little bit awkward, but I appreciate Billie Joe's Westerbergian approach of creating complicated female characters that serve as a stand-in for the male author. You know, the production of "Wake Me Up When September Ends" is a bit too saccharine for my tastes, but I will concede that the song captures a beautiful idea about time - needing it to slow down, to speed up, mostly to avoid any suffering. But yeah, I don't know about that 12-minute music video, guys. Many flaws on this record for sure, and once I grew tired of Green Day, I then moved on to some of their influences: The Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Ramones. So I can't hate it for that reason. B+
OK album. The album isn't really cohesive, but it has some really good songs. This brings me back to Junior High. ***
The very first CD I ever purchased was Green Day Dookie, and I was a huge fan on them at the time. However, by 2004 I was listening to so many different and new things I never found the time to put this album on. It is better than I expected, but it is no Dookie.
pros: it bops cons: activated an unskippable cutscene about the bush presidency 3.5
as a former green day girly who thought the worst in music were people like taylor swift who grew up to be a taylor swift fan this gave me flashbacks to my teenage years and teenage angst. I always thought this one was peak music and I like it very much but I will give this one a bad grade because I cannot bear the embarrasment of being an akward teen and this brought me right back.
78% Best: American Idiot, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me up When September Ends Must-Hear? No
I think this album was absolutely observant as to the trajectory things have since headed in the last 20 years. I also think it has a strong collection of tracks. However, it also seems a bit lacking in the raw emotion contained in a lot of more political/angry music which seems a bit at odds with the subject, and it did feel samey when I wasn't paying attention - Billie Joe doesn't deviate a lot in the way he sings. I liked the use of double songs. Green Day just don't hit quite right for me so I had to give this a high 3. Fave Track: Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams Rating: 3
3.25
Preferred their older stuff
A solid album
The high points are truly high, and are certainly a mainstay in the cultural zeitgeist, but the rest of the album drags and is forgettable.
It’s non offensive
Not my cup of tea but some good tracks
the best part about this album was when NOFX came on after it'd finished. there was a time when i really liked these guys, but between their change in overall tone and it appearing more and more that billie joe is a dink, it's really hard for me to enjoy them like i used to. i don't want to be that guy, but i really did enjoy their older stuff more, even if they essentially wrote the same song over & over. see also: https://open.spotify.com/album/5xlutZ0sYfJQjVIBOkkeW8
It certainly has a pop charm, dated somewhat now I feel. If you like Green Day then this is one of the better ones otherwise 3*
its a good record with a good sound, suprising. i didnt care for the lyrics cuz i was like 4 when this came out, and the soundscape wasnt that interesting for another listen
