очень круто для дебютника
David Byrne! CBGB! What's not to love?
Easy 5.
Classic! So absurdly perfect.
Pretty good, important lyrics.
It’s one of those albums where there is no waste and every element serves a purpose. It is a great intro to talking heads
[album #11] Haven’t listened to this album all the way through in probably nine or ten years, forgot how much i love it. jangly 70s guitars, chill vibe, i personally love the lyrics and vocals, and i feel like it “sets the stage” well for what’s to come for the talking heads. fave tracks: uh oh, love comes to town; new feeling; happy day; the book i read; don’t worry about the government; psycho killer; first/last week…carefree; & pulled up. 5/5 :)
Probably one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands. It really can't get better than this. An almost perfect album for their debut album. No matter how many times I listen to this album it never gets old.

Oh hell yes I LOVE me some Talking Heads. Byrne is just classic as always. Tina Weymouth kills this thing on Bass and is actually audible in the mix. Psycho Killer is ofc the undisputed star on this thing but I really like the playful “Don’t Worry About the Government,” and the funky guitar riffs on “New Feeling” This isn’t my favorite TH album but it’s still worthy of a 5 IMO. No skips, the thing is a breezy 40 minutes anyways which is a plus from me. Mayyyybe closer to a 4.5.
One of my favorite debut albums of all time! Talking Heads makes me proud to be on the spectrum!
As is true for everything produced by the Talking Heads, this is an imaginative and incredible album with humor and great beats.
Talking Heads 77 is a low 5 for me, i absolutely love this band and so much of what i love about them is present here, it’s just a bag of ideas all executed with so much energy
I think this album was of critical importance to the New York scene, and later on much wider importance. Not sure I'd class this as punk or new wave, but it's definitely an influential record. Plus I think it's chock full of great songs. I have this as an extended version with alternative versions and a live recording. Excellent stuff that I didn't pay enough attention to at the time.
An all-time great album that is a building block for music to this day.
I've owned this album since I was a teenager and I saw 'This Is The Talking Heads'. I wanted to be like David Byrne in the suit with the boombox. I am biased towards giving this 5 stars but I do want to say that I enjoy all of the later albums more. The guitar work on this album is super great I think the lyrics just got better the less they ... stopped making sense... Also the songs got a bit more groovy though I hate to use that term. I don't know how else to say it, they were less sparse. Giving it 5 stars anyway.
This was everything I want in a Taking Heads album. Just gritty and "punk" enough to have the absurdity and silliness be effective. I also liked the semi beachy raggae vibe. Might have just been in the right time and place when I listened to this one but throughly enjoyed it and will definitely go back to it.
Qu'est-ce que c'est? The Talking Heads debut finds them in their most raw and frenetic form. They continued to perfect this sound over the next few albums and, while I do prefer Fear in Music and Remain in Light, this is still an absolutely (psycho) killer album.

I have no idea what I'm listening to but I really like it. Is it new wave? What even is new wave? Is it punk? Is it post punk? What is post punk? Is it funk? What the funk is going on here? Why are the musicians so good? What the hell is this guy even singing about? Do I need to care? Second most confusing thing I've heard so far but this time I am down. Looking forward to the next time they come up.
I started listening to Talking Heads after a friend put me on to them and at first I wasn't sure about them. I thought they were a bit odd and annoying but they grew on me over time and I love them now. This isn't an album that I revisit very often but after listening to it again today I think it will be. Favourite song: psycho killer
YES. this made so much sense to me in a way i couldn't explain fully as a teen and not much better pushing 40. amazing amazing work.
Great album, love the flashback sounds.
Just love it. Incredible.
For the longest time I thought I hated punk because I was under the impression that the entire genre was either pop punk or hardcore, neither of which I particularly cared for. This led me to brush off any music that had the misfortune of being under the same label as Green Day, and missing a lot of cool stuff in the process. I credit this album with opening my eyes to the concept that there is good music labeled as punk, that it could be vibrant and actually interesting to listen to, and forcing me to broaden my horizons from the classic rock stuff I grew up with. Given that I can't really give this anything less than a 5, even though if I'm completely objective it might be 4.5. What struck me upon a relisten is how joyous a lot of this album sounds, which is particularly strange given the context this music was made in (check out the documentary NY77 for some background on the environment New York punk was operating in). And people might find the quote unquote 'quirkiness' grating, but I think it's 100% sincere, David Byrne is genuinely that weird of a guy.
It's Talking Heads. What's not to love?
So I would probably give a 7-second recording of Talking Heads walking into a studio and accidentally knocking over a mic stand 5 stars, but this really merits it. Lots of lists about the best first track or best first two or three tracks of an album -- you never really see any about the last song or two. Not sure you're ever going to find two better than Psycho Killer and Pulled Up.
Bangurrr
Forgot how much I liked this one. I remember disliking it when I first heard it but now I like it more every time I listen to it. Book I Read, Pulled Up, New Feeling all great, and newly discovered I Want to Live on the deluxe version, which I love and somehow reminds me of Dinosaur Jr. 5 stars might be too high but i’m feeling it right now.
One of my favourite bands. Love the late-70s new wave alternative. Reminds me of Television.
Classique
Stellar debut album from the always fun Talking Heads. I really do like how they went against the grain and put Psycho Killer at the end of the album. The rest of the album is also jam packed with quirky fun jams so there's really no rush. Kinda funny reading the wiki article about this album, that Lou Reed instructed David Byrne to never wear short sleeves on stage again and that he should hide his hairy arms. Anyways, his hairy arms never held him back from having a fantastic career. 5 stars
10/10 The more I hear of this album (and I first encountered it at uni, 30years ago), the more I love it. Funny, exciting, clever, musical, funky. Everything I need.
Some albums you hear, and just know they were influential as hell. His voice isn’t the strongest and it doesn’t matter! His voice blends so well with the music. Also what is this genre, it’s like if funk was in a square ass school uniform. No skips.
this one took a few listens, but grew throughout and i feel like will continue. 4 stars edit: i go back to this more than anything, 5 stars
I love this album. I have so much respect for this band. It’s interesting to hear their style before they were really influenced by Fela Kuti.
Feels like the whole album prepares you to listen to Psycho Killer and have it blow your mind even though you’ve heard it hundreds of times. Not to say the rest of the album isn’t fantastic. From start to finish it grabs your attention and doesn’t let up. Standout songs: uh-oh love comes to town, the book I read, don’t worry about the government, psycho killer
A friend in my track club loved this one, he got into the Heads a lot earlier than me. He must have always played the second side for company since I don't recognize any of the first half so it's like coming to 6 fresh songs and 5 old friends. It's funny to hear how absolutely the Talking Heads sound was there from day one, the rhythms, the Kafka absurdities of modern life lyrics and jerky neurotic vocal tics, and a lot of the ai yi yi yi yi's and characteristic melodic shifts show up all the way through Byrne's very long career, but everything super stripped back compared to where Eno's production took them over the next couple albums. Being a civil servant my friend's favorite cut was Don't Worry About the Government. He set records in the 800 meters and would puke at the end of every race. He was awkward, nervous, spoke with a stutter, he might as well have been Byrne's white shirt, black tie, glasses civil servant fall over dancing character. Fell in love too early, married too early, divorced too early, died too early.
Great Sunday morning tunes if you care about my opinion. I’ve never actively sought out their music. Somehow I’m still bopping along and know the lyrics to many of their songs though.
Talking Heads classic from way before they stopped making sense.
love this
Well yes. I love the Talking Heads and this is one of their BEST. Just banger after banger.
Big fan
Bloody brilliant album
Un álbum excelente que lo tiene todo
Great
Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands, but despite that I hadn't actually sat down and listened to this album in a long time. Listening to it now, it's interesting to hear just how stripped back and live. This album feels, especially when compared to where the band would go in just a matter of a couple of albums. You can tell that these songs were mostly composed as a three-piece, with Jerry Harrison just adding additional flourishes here and there while most of the guitar work is handled solely by David Byrne. It doesn't reach the emotional highs that some of their later albums would, but there are some classics on here and I would argue that it's impossible to not tap your feet or have a smile on your face for a good stretch of this record. It's an essential listen for fans of post-punk, new wave, or those interested in the New York Punk scene of the mid to late '70s.
Quintessential 70s music
Alright, de Album Generator testet mini Fanheit. Aber da das Album nomal biz besser isch wie fear of Music (und vlt öppe gliich wie More Songs about Buildings and Food), macht das nach mine Berechnige ungefähr 5 Talking Heads 55
Talking Heads: 77 is the debut studio album by the American rock band Talking Heads. It was released on September 16, 1977, through Sire Records. The recording took place in April 1977 at New York's Sundragon Studios. The single "Psycho Killer" reached number 92 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2003, the album was ranked No. 290 on Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time", and 291 in a 2012 revised list.[36] The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
AMAZING SOUND. I have only listened to the first 3 songs. I think the remastering is making them "justice"; it seems that they were ahead of their time. 10/10. I am thinking of buying their vinyl. Definitely, I am gonna come back to this album.
Can’t quite say exactly why, but I think this is my favorite Talking Heads album.
Such a great album in every respect--music, lyrics, vibe, uniqueness. I'm very familiar with this album and welcome the chance to listen to it at every opportunity.
At points my favourite band ever. I think Eno in their latter albums makes them excel, but the rough edges and sounds here are just SO great. Don't Worry About The Government is one of my fave Byrne tracks, especially off American Utopia. On this it sounds scared but hopeful. Solo it sounds weary and full of worry. An evolution of a song through politics. Also Psycho Killer exists. Imagine writing that song! Just incredible stuff
David Byrne’s discussions around his neurodivergence being a blessing for his music are always so apparent when you put a Talking Heads record on. He’s such a genius.
Psycho killer qu’est que ce
If this list has taught me nothing else, it's that I love Talking Heads.
PEAK
Old timey favorites.
Outstanding! Two killer album choices back-to-back after a few duds in a row. One of my favourite bands at their peak. Truly sensational.
Love all things talking heads … I loved this album !! A lot of it previously unheard by me . Enjoyed it !!
10/10 Pure David Byrne bias.
one of my favorite bands in the world!!!!! what a freakin debut
I think I’ve seen Stop Making Sense more in theaters than any other film. Never listened to a Talking Heads album until now. & I love hearing these classic albums & leading that the big hit off the album is probably my least favorite track on the album.
just an overall insane debut. The benefit of hindsight had me waiting for psycho killer and the way the album builds to it and sprinkles in little motifs makes it feel like a centrepiece, but pulled up at the end seals it with such an energetic climax that i was caught off guard immediately after PK. The album definitely has one sound but in a way that feels like one brilliant whole rather than a repetitive set of songs. Grooved to it the whole time and it’s no wonder Talking Heads took off like they did.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Fav: The book I read or Uh Oh love comes to town least fav: Happy Day Iconic: Psycho Killer
me encantó!
Fun as usuaaaaaal
A bunch of weirdos who can string together a tune. Not my favorite Talking Heads, but certainly an awesome album
As far as I know this is the first New Wave album. I am a huge Talking Heads fan, but this is definitely one of their weaker albums since they haven't really found their sound yet. It is still the Talking Heads though and a really great album with some standout songs. This album has really grown on me over the years and I now love it in its own special way. Low 5.
Nasal vocals that sound a bit like Bowie. The perfect album to dance to
david byrne is a genius, stop making sense will 4ever be my fav talking heads album but this is also obviously a masterpiece.
David Byrne!
I adore Talking Heads. They do no wrong for me.
Question: Is there a more perfect opening four albums than those by the Talking Heads? Answer: No! Possibly only equalled by contemporaries Echo and the Bunnymen. I brook no argument, sire 🧐
I just really love psycho killer. Having the first and last songs relate is cool and there’s so many sick riffs on this thing.
It is poppy yet retains the punk edge they'd gained in the CBGB scene. This is an American classic.
Been there
Addictive
Wonderful
3 or 4 killer tracks
listened to the deluxe bc i love sugar on my tongue
Tina Weymouth is so so good
Cudowna płyta. Chyba staję się fanką tego zespołu. Muzycznie dopracowana, trochę taneczna, trochę pokręcona. Z hipnotyzującym wokalem i autorskim sznytem. Cudo. 9/10
vrhhhhh. uvijek dobro poslušat ovo, drago mi je da me stranica podsjetila. vrckasti autizam na najjače, nema slabe pjesme. najnajdraže: uh, oh...; tentative decisions; book i read; don't worry about...; pulled up
Got this album when I was 15, two years after it came out and was blown away. Punk suddenly went in a new direction: no one sounded like them, no one sang songs about buildings and food and the book they read. "Talk to your analyst that's what he's paid for" became my group's mantra and we couldn't get enough. Suddenly rock wasn't about sex (is there any lead singer less sexy than Byrne?), it was about logic, decisions, plans, books.
Just found my type of music haha. Absolute masterpiece. So fun listening, just listening it make everything enjoyable. Almost saved every song of the album.
Annoying in the best way possible!
I always love the Talking Heads
Ive heard psycho killer but I haven’t heard the rest! Very fun album the vibes are immaculate. Very feel good and energized. Sound is consistent and I love David Byrnes vocals. Would listen to again! 9/10
Think I’ve found my new favorite band
Amazing no notes
Hvala, algoritem. "New Feeling" mi je kul. "Who Is It?" je tud fletn, ampak dolg samo minuto 40. "No Compassion" je a banger. "The Book I Read" isto. "Don't Worry About the Government" je fakin amazing naslov komada, lol. Pa spet je hud komad. Naslednji isto, banger ("First Week/Last Week… Carefree"), sledi mu pa itak "Psycho Killer", k je ikoničen. V mal drugačni verziji, kot sm ga navajena, kar je blo kul slišat. In še "Pulled Up" za zaključek albuma. In guess what? Another bangerrrrrr. Ker dobr zaključek. Tak, k ti je žal, da je konc in se zalotiš, da hočeš
Again, I think I have rated every Talking Heads album five stars. Today is no different. What a debut. Holy shit. I also happen to have just watched Stop Making Sense. There just aren’t groups this interesting anymore. Thank goodness for David Byrne. And Tina Weymouth. And Chris Frantz. And Jerry Harrison. And that giant suit.
Solid debut featuring one of the group's most well-known songs as a penultimate closer.
It’s impossible for me to be unbiased about this one. It’s the album that got me into talking heads and I love every song on it. It’s fun, it’s funky, it’s a bit weird and it makes me happy every time I hear it.
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my listen to this album. Every song is unique in it's own way, and you definitely aren't bored listening to any of the songs. They somehow blend together super nicely, and the plucky guitar in each song is always fun to listen to.
9/10
I saw a comment under the video for David Byrne's NPR Tiny Desk concert: It's 2025 and David Byrne is still living in the future. Well, it's 2025 and Talking Heads 77 is still the future.
Fun, weird, really liked it.
Never listened to a Talking Heads album until now. If some of the songs had a brass section, it would have been some top ska. Great album!
Love these guys, the Heads that Talk.
5/5 talking heads not much else to say
already listened to this countless times before starting this list. not much to be said except it's great Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town - 5/5 New Feeling - 4/5 Tentative Decisions - 3/5 Happy Day - 4/5 Who Is It? - 3/5 No Compassion - 5/5 The Book I Read - 5/5 Don't Worry About the Government - 5/5 First Week / Last Week...Carefree - 5/5 Psycho Killer - 5/5 Pulled Up - 5/5 Average score: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
already heard it, great album
Nice!
There's just something about TH that always makes me feel kinda warm inside. I'm too young to have been there when this album came out but I can imagine the HYPE
Divertido, me hizo bailar, me gustaron todos los tracks.
5 out of 5 Enough said. Talking Heads.
A great way to spend 38 minutes
great jam, fits its era
My very first thought - I love the way that David Byrne sounds. He has such an engaging inflection in his tone. This is my first full-on exposure to Talking Heads and I'm loving it halfway into this first track. Obviously everyone's heard Psycho Killer, so it's not news, but the way he delivers his lyrics is really captivating. Loving the mix of funk, punk, and pop through the first three tracks. Really pushing a lot of different buttons and doing it in a way that doesn't feel forced and remains cohesive. Moving into Happy Day, it keeps an upbeat energy while slowing the tempo down in a really nice way. This album has a really consistent energy to it but each track still stands alone as great in their own right. I'm on the sixth track now and this album is smooth as butter, maintaining a consistent sound and theme without being repetitive. Songs are flowing into one another perfectly. This feels pretty polished for a debut album in that sonically nothing feels out of place, and while I'm not too familiar with the sounds of 1977 this feels really unique to me while still achieving a sound that's accessible and enjoyable to a wide audience. I'm absolutely loving the horns on First Week / Last Week, and we get some nice patented David Byrne AYAYAYAYAYAs. Really enjoyed this track. Highlights for me are New Feeling, No Compassion, The Book I Read, First Week/Last Week, and Psycho Killer (a necessary inclusion), but there are no skips on this album. I loved every song. If we're Talking Head then this must be the place, indeed. A really wonderful palette cleanser after Suicide by Suicide. If I had one huge takeaway, it'd be my first. David Byrne is a truly unique and talented artist, and his supporting cast knows how to compliment his sound perfectly. My first 5 and it was so, so easy to give.
Pre-Thoughts: - I fucking love the Talking Heads, but as far as albums go I've done Remain in Light and Speaking in Tongues. Excited to get into some of their earlier material. - I know Psycho Killer of course, im expecting a lot here tbh During Thoughts: - David Byrne you little fucking freak I love you - Instrumentation is very lush and theres a lot of atypical instruments spread throughout that keep it interesting - Happy Day vox lowk annoying im sorry - Who Is It? is such a sick track - Dont Worry About The Government rules. Love that commentary - Hearing Psycho Killer in context of the entire album makes it slap 1000x harder - What a track to end with, maybe the best song on the album Post Thoughts: - This is an album that will reward multiple listens. Feels timeless - This is just a mf band dude, like on every level they kill it. - That head is talking fr
Talking Heads did what few bands do: release a string of fantastic albums, each one successfully building on and expanding on their sound and vision. In their case, the first five studio albums fit that bill and then the climax is the great live production Stop Making Sense. This album is the beginning of that sequence. Punk was still in its infancy when Talking Heads introduced us to new wave, but more importantly to their unique style. It is groovy, airy, rhythmic, witty, and edgy. It is great stuff. And if you only know “Psycho Killer,” make sure to lean into “No Compassion.” And on the other hand, you can find a more conformist psychosis in “Don’t Worry About the Government.” 5/5 and play this one again.
The Talking Head's debut album is a brilliant work of punk/new wave posturing. It's the perfect album to listen to after you've gone out to a Sex Pistols concert, got amped up on anarchy, went on a bender, woke up late, and needed musical recovery on your way back to the office. They allow you to retain all of the angst and frustration with the authority, but know that the answer is more than simple ascent or full rebellion. Byrne vocals feel like they could be anyone - not rock star, but relevant. This is a great, great album. Don't miss it.
5 stars
10/10
Just really good.
It's fun and super influential and it never outstays it's welcome. 4.5/5.0: Excellent
fantastic listen. short, hooky songs with just a touch of talking heads weirdness
Gotta love the talking heads.
Art Fags...Oh David Byrne, wird das hier meine 80er Wave 5 Sterne Ausnahme? Ja! c
Nice,a epic band at the start.
Obviously a classic, started this journey off with a banger. The best part was how pissed Scott got at me putting it on at the office
Об'єктивно в них далі будуть кращі альбоми, але мені цей теж завжди дуже подобався.
Classic
David Bryne and Neil Young both seem insufferable but damn I might as well just hit the 5 star button as soon as I see either of them on this list. I love this debut. It has some warts but Weymouths rock solid bass and Brynes weirdo meandering melody and lyrics just get me every time.
-----》 5 STARS -
Art rock goodness. David Byrne is a genius.
Not their best but still awfully good.
I saw Byrne's big-band show (festival set version) a few years ago, and loved the faux-martial joyfulness of it. I guess I hadn't listened to this record for a long time, because here's that sound, right there at the start.
I don't think it's their best, but what a debut! And certainly original and influential.
It has been shown that people of all ages identify the era when they were 12-13 as the time when music was best; for those of us born in 1965 it's objectively true. My relationship with Talking Heads is complex, but I have absolutely no complaints about this album, and I think their oeuvre really does benefit from listening in order (and, like me, you will hate them by the end). But this album is all hope and promise and good ideas. (Good thing they abandoned the ska angle, though)
Classic game changing album
Quality
Such a fresh take on music. David Byrne has a wild beast in him
fun record!
SOO GOOD!!!
This album is fantastic and iconic; it truly is a perfect classic!
Wow what an amazing debut. From the first track you just get such a great introduction of the Talking Heads sound. This was my first time listening to this album cover to cover and boy does it hit on every level for me. Love the sound, in particular the prominent bass lines and unique riffs. I could see some folks not digging the vocal style and while it’s a bit unrefined it works for me. Lyrically great with one of the best rock love songs I’ve heard in awhile in The Book I Read. Some weird topics covered like civil servants and college but still well written. If I had one nit to pick it’s that the flow of the album sorta abruptly ends on an odd song for the last track - but I give it a pass as it’s a pretty heartwarming (if somewhat boring) track. Standout tracks: the album. If I had to pick a few Uh-Oh Love Comes to Town, The Book I Read, and Psycho Killer.
Talking Heads is a favorite of mine so I was excited to see this show up today.
Best Song: Psycho Killer A great debut album from a great band. While, often times, the debut album from a band is their best stuff since they have the most time to work on it without the record company breathing down their neck, in Talking Heads case their stuff just gets better. That is not a dig on this album whatsoever, it's great. So are the albums that follow. 5/5.
Facking love this one.
Love love love they’re amazing
Great album. Fun to listen to
I liked this more than I expected. Most of the songs are fun to listen to and seem to work nicely together as an album
third day on here and i’m getting talking heads so i think that’s a good omen. one of my favorite bands of all time, i love this album for more than just “psycho killer” which really elevates it — it also includes a song from my talking heads top ten: “don’t worry about the government.” i think i’m really fond of talking heads when they’re at their weirdest and nonsensical-ist lyrics wise. letting david byrne in the studio to just make noises in the middle of songs is….. he’s the best to ever do it i fear. i love a good moving away from the mic to scream moment, too. so you can imagine i loved this album DOWNNNN
9/10
One of my most favourite record by my most favourite band of all time
Great listen while ending on a high note
And so, it begins. Amidst a burning city, hallowed out from white flights and drop dead proclaims from the President, there was a weird yet enlightening bunch of art students who set about to document ongoings that appear normal on its surface but is bubbling something sinister, off-kilter. Not to mention they don't tend to stick around for long in some cases, preferring to linger in bit pieces in ways that would reverberate. Talking Heads, in alarming red and traffic light green, jerk through and angle their way into legendary status with their first outing to the world. Had they stopped there, this would have been the Rosetta Stone of post-punk. But, thankfully for the listening public, there'd be more songs about mundane yet mesmerizing things, regardless of fear or creatures. Nearly fifty years on, this still strikes a chord.
Listened to before
9.7/10
10/10 album. Love it. One of my all time favorites.
One of my favorite bands so I am biased. Love everything on here and can’t get enough of their unique sound, no one else sounds like them. The ones after this with Eno’s involvement are even better but this is solid all the way through
Talking Heads
PSYCHO KILLER CAT CAFE
So creative! No one really like them.
Duh
My favorite Talking Heads album
I was surprised to learn that this album was released in 1977 because I have "Psycho Killer" on my 80's playlist. I wonder if David Byrne knew that this was ahead of its time and drew attention to that fact with titling it with its release year. Anyway, it capture such an iconic sound and vision, and the songs themselves are fun, and accessible.
Great album! A few bangers
5 stars just for psycho killer
Day 12 First listen- It was a fun album, I could also hear a little Syd Barrett influence which made me like it a lot. (3.5/5) Second listen- UPDATE!!! I am totally obsessed with this album. This has motivated me to dive deep into talking heads discography. (5/5)
ive said it before but i rly just need to do an actual listening project for talking heads where i take full time for all their records, but even on cursory revisit its impossible not to be swept up in this little bundle of delights...bryne's hilariously prosaic proclamation that the band aimed to make "good music in a song format" feels like it explains things that i cant articulate. every track is a bundle of musical and thematic ideas u wouldnt Think to make songs out of, presented with an equal uncanniness and warmth, hyper-perception of tiny details that overwhelm into a fuzzy haze...peak autism ofc! ultimately im a little boring, as i do prefer the eno-enabled expansion of the band's palate (cranking up the uncanny side of the slider, and somehow becoming a lot more emotionally transfixing for me in the process), but cmon man its talking heads. for a good while they were just bursting with nonstop good ideas, no matter the size of their canvas
I didn’t need another excuse to listen to this again, but here we go!
So good, can't believe I haven't listened to this whole album before. Starts off fast and catchy. Great melodies throughout, fun instrumental use. Another album that I have the feeling of being weird enough to be interesting and different, to catch your attention, but not so weird that it's distracting or hard to enjoy. Love how Tentative Decisions closes with a piano jam. The Book I Read has a great intro. Overall fantastic album.
YAAAAAAAY
Buddy… The Goat
New wave is a thousand times better when there is nary a synthesizer in sight. Not an overindulgent note to be found here, which is refreshing. Talking Heads really started out at the top of their game!
An immaculate debut album that introduces everything that is so great about the band. Great, catchy songs that bubble with infectious energy but also, in songs like "Pulled Up," an arty punkish spunk. Also incorporates xylophone, island drums, and fun arrangements. All that and "Psycho Killer." I frickin love this album!
Everyone wants to talk about Fear of Music, More Songs, Remain in Light, for good reason - but this is one of the best debuts in rock history. I love every single song, and it has some of their very best stuff. Don't Worry About the Government is top five Talking Heads for me, the energy of psycho killer into pulled up is just electric, easy five stars
Loved it!!
David Byrne said that at the time, the band felt a bit disappointed by the end result of this record, because it didn’t really sound like Talking Heads. Imagine hearing your own band played back to you, sounding like the coolest band in the world, and being like, “I don’t know, it doesn’t really sound like us.”
5 - love
A welcome breath of fresh and invigorating musical air. Look up the top ten billboard albums of 1977 and see for yourself.
Best Talking Heads album? I think so. Really defines what they are as a band and very creative as well. Their peak album for sure.
Weird music for weird people. I'm weird. 🥳
Imagine this being your FIRST album
God damn this is a great album!
Great bass lines
❤️
Fun, quick, perfection. This is how you album
hell yh
It's Talking Heads. Great album. Great songs!
Here comes the intellectual department of CBGBs with a quirky debut collection. At this stage the keynote is eccentricity and thoughtful simplicity, without the cloying pretentiousness which marred much of their later output. That said there’s no lack of ambition either lyrically or musically, where amidst the lo-fi feel I detect something of Tom Verlaine’s Television. Psycho Killer was the breakthrough single and a live favourite. It’s off kilter dynamic is perfectly judged. Don’t Worry About The Government is a great number. I’ve always been fond of the song Pulled Up, but then I was in a band that covered it, so…
Absolute ripper of a debut album.
Omfg outrageously good
Great Friday vibes
Never disappointed by Talking Heads.
Brilliant. Autism meets punk meets funk. Zero notes, an absolute classic for a reason.
This is just excellent
it's talking heads. unmistakably.
What can I say that hasn't already been said. Stellar album throughout. Came back to this later as I was 8 when it came out. Love the Heads wish I would have been able to see them live.
5/5 really enjoyed this. Can see how it might have influenced people like Euros Childs
Rocking fun album
Hell yeah
Pretty good if I say so very funk!
Love these guys
the debut of everyone's favorite quirky new wave rock group, talking heads. their manic and mildly offbeat energy is present even in their debut. i really admire the sound, even almost half a century after it has a timeless energy that resonates with a lot of listeners including myself. talking heads' music represents the state of humanity at its honest point. where am i? who am i? why is all this happening? I DON'T KNOW THE ANSWER TO THESE QUESTIONS!! music that constantly shifts and is indecisive in real time.
The not so humble beginnings for the Talking Heads. They were already darlings of the CBGB's crowd, opening for The Ramones, mentored by Lou Reed, and sought after by several record labels before they hit the studio. And they certainly delivered for this impressive and unique debut, merging punk, funk and disco, defying fears that they were becoming too commercial. Their template would pave the way for music of the next two decades so it's hard to believe that this was released in 1977. While their major fame would come a bit later with the help of Brian Eno, "77" remains a classic of the New York underground scene and it continues to inspire. Even people less familiar with the band are likely to have heard "Psycho Killer" somewhere without realizing it.
This kicked off an all-day Talking Heads listen for me. I'll give 5 stars to all their albums.
could i write poetry to this? y
I love this album so much! Love Byrne's lyrics and his vocal ticks. They had a very unique sound that indie bands have been trying to replicate ever since, but no one does it better than the originals.
Everything Byrne has ever done has been a work of genius. He is just one of the greatest musicians of all time! This is up there among the best pieces he ever put out, just a fantastic album front to back. Any album I own on vinyl gets bumped to the top of the rating system and this is no exception. A great and absolutely essential album!
So cool 🤩
It feels against the point of this exercise to say that this would probably get a 5 for psycho killer alone. Thankfully, the rest of this is a grand old time too - and psycho killer isn’t even the best song here. Then again New Wave has always scratched an itch for me so I’m not surprised that more than half of this ended up in the playlists. Side Note: God I love a steel drum, one of the most pleasing sounds out there to me. Hopefully we get more of it down the line.
Well, it's about time I got some Talking Heads after getting the My Life in the Bush of Ghosts collaboration frontman and songwriter David Byrne did with Brian Eno as album #40 on my journey. It's undoubtedly cool to start with their debut album, with hit single "Psycho Killer", which I remember fondly from playing Rock Band 2. Not only do I still enjoy that song to this day, but I realize that every song on their debut, Talking Heads 77, was a genuine bop. From the get-go with "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town", it's apparent that the band effectively incorporated funk and R&B in addition to punk and new wave into their sound. The result is a collection of songs with a very punchy rhythm section, jangly guitar hooks, and David Byrne's unorthodox voice that commands over a wide range. If anything, David comes off like an instrument, and he played himself well in the lyrical expression of his emotions and the perceived thoughts of others. From "New Feeling" to "Pulled Up", the grooves don't stop amidst the well-balanced production, and the vibes are pleasant in such an unorthodox manner. There's not much more I can say other than the Talking Heads put out a stellar debut album in all of its unique zaniness.
Very distinctive sound. Brilliant vocals which ipitomises the overall sound. Still sounds fresh today and this album is nearly 50 years old. Incredible. Deserves to be included in this list for sure.
I mean we live the talking heads
Maybe I'm just in a good mood and this album made it gooder, but another 5 being added to my tally. I hope your day is gooder for having listened to this, too.
Fun and good
Jerky, funky, awkward, nerdy, intelligent, danceable.
Perfection.
Obvious 5 star
Overall: 10/10 First off, this is one of the best albums of all time. I've been a Talking Heads fan in some capacity since high school when I heard Psycho Killer and Burning Down the House for the first time. It took years for me to actually dive into their music, but the catalyst for that was my random decision to watch Stop Making Sense in my early 20s. I genuinely couldn't believe my eyes and ears. David Byrne's stage presence set an incredibly high standard for me. Not only that, but the music made me cry because it was so shockingly good. Also, as a bassist, it's not hard to fall heard over heels in love with Tina Weymouth, who may be my favourite bassist? (Very debatable) The first time I listened to this album is a core memory for me. I was living with my parents and they were away for the night. I put the album on and I danced by myself for the next 40-ish minutes, losing myself in the rhythm. To this day it's tough for me to listen to pretty much any Talking Heads song without getting emotional in some way. Personally, Speaking in Tongues is slightly more important to me just for the fact that it was the first Talking Heads album I heard all the way through, but this is an incredibly close second and a rare album where I have zero complaints. Fav Song: New Feeling Least Fav Song: They're all amazing, but I listen to The Book I Read the least
8/10
What an incredible debut. I considered giving it four stars because I know there are even better albums by them to come, but it seems unfair to grade them on a curve.
Standouts: • Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town • New Feeling • The Book I Read • Don't Worry About The Government • First Week / Last Week....Carefree • Psycho Killer • Pulled Up • Love → Building on Fire • I Wish You Wouldn't Say That
Not a massive fan of the talking heads...
Great debut album. It has “Psycho Killer” on it along with a bunch of excellent deep cuts. I’m a fan of “Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town,” “Don’t Worry About the Government,” and “First Week/Last Week… Carefree.” David Byrne is such a singular performer and songwriter. The world looks different when you see it through his eyes. The lyrics on these songs are funny and surprising and insightful. The band sounds awesome too. They morph from driving new wave, to spiky art punk, to slinky lounge pop. Whatever the song calls for.
In context, this was a huge album, very fresh, different, quite unique and the start of a brilliant career for David Byrne. The album is terrific - 6 songs made it to my "liked" list and there are other good ones on here.
One of the debut albums of all time. Definitely a top 5 band for me. Love Talking Heads. Love this album.
Always a 10/10 for me
Easily my favourite band of all time, and this may be my favourite album of theirs. There's not a dud track on this. What a debut! The guitar work sometimes sounds like classic rock n roll, but they have their own jerky, off kilter quality to them. The rhythm is similar with its sometimes strange time signatures and stop-starty rigidity. Then the vocals are insane, otherworldly. It's like a new wave alien angel landed, consumed punk, soul and gospel material and formed its own completely unique style. How do you contort ‘Happy Day’ so much to sound like that? The lyrics are masterful as well. Tentative Decisions is funny and relatable. Psycho Killer has stood the test of time and still sounds like it could have been released in any decade. Pulled Up is my favourite song, just a lovely sentiment and good vibes coming through.
YAASSSS David Byrne slaaaay. Glad to have gotten to listen to today's album on vinyl :)
Brilliant album one of my all time favourites
I like this band
One of the best, if not the best, post punk alternative records. It’s a classic from top to bottom.
Artistic rebels Experimenting in rock Uniquely upbeat
Great album. I prefer the live versions on Stop Making Sense and The Name of This Band…, but this is stacked with hits.
Yes god
I would give this 4.5 - really great, and then the next ones are even better!
Yooooooo, heel nice Kende deze om een of andere reden nog niet, terwijl dit hun debuutalbum is, foei
no skips on this dude
I’ve just had my first listen to Talking Heads’ debut album Talking Heads: 77, and I must say, I’m genuinely impressed. From the first note, it’s clear that this album was meticulously mixed, offering a fresh, dynamic sound that is as fun as it is innovative. The tracks are diverse, each bringing something new and exciting to the table, showcasing a truly original sound that blends post-punk, art rock, and funky rhythms. As a huge fan of bass, I have to give a special shoutout to the basslines—each one is unique and really stands out, adding a groove and depth that elevates the entire album. The voice of David Byrne also stands out—there's something so captivating about his delivery, quirky and expressive, that makes the album even more engaging. The track listing is fantastic, and just when I thought the album couldn’t get any better, the big hit I was hoping for did, right in the middle of the album. It’s a great payoff and definitely adds to the overall flow of the album. This album is an incredible journey from start to finish, and even though I expected to enjoy it, I wasn’t prepared for just how much I would. Talking Heads definitely exceeded my expectations, and I’m now even more excited to explore their other works. Highly recommend Talking Heads: 77—it’s a true gem of its time.
77 is probably the Talking Heads album I know least. They used to play Slippery People at the local clubs when I was a teenager but the band themselves were not well known in the UK. I started with the mid era/later era albums which were a more fully developed sound/production but the early stuff really is good. Quirky, musical, different to everything else. Talking Heads are one of those bands that really stand out when you look back at music.
Innovative and creative
Se não fosse Psycho Killer, disco nota 10
I could listen to David Byrne all the live long day.
I freaking love this album, but also the Talking Heads in general.
For the most part I love most things David Byrne is a part of. He seems to create an environment of vibrant and eccentric creativity to his projects. That’s incredibly inspiring to me. Talking Heads always seemed to walk that line between new wave and punk and this album really highlights that acrobatic dance on a tightrope. Easy 5 for me.
Talking Heads' quirky debut record is not perfect, but it's perfectly quirky. Despite their evolution through infusions of influence, the DNA of the band is confidently presented. Crisply anxious rhythms and musically nervous melodies backing uncomfortably honest lyrics. It's easy to point to the classic songs on the album and rate it highly based on those alone but the truth is that it's a record I've come to love not despite its flaws and less popular songs but because of them.
I have loved this album since the day I bought it in the mid-80s. Talking Heads were a fantastic band, but the early albums are so much more raw sounding even though they kind of sound over produced in the studio. I will listen to this album more over time I am sure. And Psycho Killer is one of the great songs of all time
Great album
Beyond radio singles, I never really gave much thought to Talking Heads until recently. But it’s never too late to appreciate their quirkiness and creativity. And Tina Weymouth is an excellent bass player!
Great album, between Byrne’s energetic singing and the lead and bass phrases that start each song. It’s a wonder there are only two greatest hits here.
I don't always know what David Byrne is singing about, but it's the wondering about the lyrics and the complexity of the music that keep each listen interesting, not to mention the album begs you to get up and dance from start to finish.
I love this one
Amazing 70s alternative album.
i am in the top 0.005% of new feeling listeners
A keystone album.
Awesome
I thought I was done with The Talking Heads! But I'm relieved to say that I wasn't. I adore them. Of the now four albums of their's on this list, I rank them this way: 1. Remain in Light 2. Talking Heads: 77 3. More Songs About Buildings and Food 4. Fear of Music "Remain in Light" is, to me, untouchable. So putting "77" at number two is saying something, because it's almost its own number one, if that makes sense. There's so much to like about this album. Byrne's lyrics are both insightful and interesting while somehow still maintaining a strange balance of naivety and self-awareness. It's almost like he's playing a part throughout the entire album. "Don't Worry About the Government" is the peak of this concept. The five-track run on this album from "The Book I Read" to the final track "Pulled Up" is really hard to beat for me, whether limiting that to another Heads album or other albums from this era. The riffs are so catchy and fun, the delivery of the lyrics is captivating. And my goodness the bass lines, as always, are just impeccable. Tina Weymouth never disappoints. I love the Talking Heads and always will. I really don't understand how "Stop Making Sense" isn't on this list. Like that just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe the author figured you needed to see the film to have proper context for the soundtrack, I don't know. But it really should be here anyway. I really dislike "Happy Day." That song can burn in hell. But my distaste for it isn't enough to lower this down to four stars. It's an easy five. Love the Heads. Standout Tracks: Uh-oh, Love Comes to Town, Don't Worry About the Government, First Week/Last Week...Carefree, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up, Love -> Building on Fire (I know it's a bonus track but I don't care; I fucking love that song)
This album made me a fan. Great band. Great Album.
Love, love, love this album. 1001 albums are recommending so much great music that I already love. Top 100 album for me.
More my cup of tea. Enjoyed this even on first listen.
A Talking Heads classic! 5 stars. Nothing to say!
So good!
This shit slaps
“Psycho” killer from start to finish
They can burn my house down all the time ;-)
An excellent debut album. Psycho Killer is one of their best songs.
I had the brilliant idea a few year’s ago that I’d listen to an album a day and then write avoid that album. I started this mini project with a deep dive into the Doors discography, followed by Talking Heads. My takeaway was that the Doors were overrated and that Talking Heads were one of my favorite bands of all time. Talking Heads 77 is a fantastic introduction to the band. It kicks off one of the best 5 album runs in history, and even if it’s my least favorite of their first 5, I love it enough for 5 stars. God bless the talking heads.
Lovely stuff
One of the best, great album
Weird and amazing all wt the same time. How did they get away with it?
The Talking Heads were pure twisted genius. Fresh bright guitars, the entire album is crisp and clean. Lyrically fascinating, dark but so much fun. David Byrne sounds like he could become completely unhinged at any moment. It’s glorious.
Great new wave groove. I was drumming the steering wheel of my car all day to this.
Damn man, they went rock hard with this one. It's all over the place, in the best possible ways. That funky bass line! The piano licks!? It's the coolest shit. I'm not so hot on the vocals but I couldn't imagine them without em.
Absolute gem of a record. It's clever, funny, and you can dance to it. What is not to like?
Superb !
How can you go wrong with an album that opens with uh oh
Essential
Guy walks into my dorm room circa 1987 as I'm playing 77 and comments on my playing "happy music." This is such good music. It stood out from what the radio stations were pumping in the mid to late 70s. Byrne is amazing, and the band provides consistently strong rhythm. I was 11 when this came out, and it's gets a full album play at least once a year.
Psycho killer
Everyone who knows me knows that I never shut up about Talking Heads. I’ve already said everything I could ever say about them. One of the best bands ever.
Top tier heads
Really fun
Fougueux, parfois dissonant, toujours tourbillon entraînant aux mélodies irrésistibles et aux sujets inattendus
Easiest 5 of my life. Every single one of these songs is a banger. I cannot believe I didn’t give the other talking heads albums 5s
She talk on my head til I 77
Loving this run of Talking Heads albums (and there must be a couple more to come, I reckon). They're all up around 4.5 for me, so giving a 5 to this one to even it out.
One of the all time great debuts.
Love it
Oh New Wave so much of you on this list. Have always been a fan of Psycho Killer, but a whole album of this style of singing can be a little much at times. This is a pretty solid debut album. I could nitpick, but it would only be the odd lyrical choice or my personal taste of wishing vocals could be replaced with a brass instrument. With more time this album would only grow on me more. A 4.6 rounded up
This isn’t a Darkside of the Moon 5- But there are some great songs here - and the band doesn’t get enough credit for the unique rhythms and sound. This was a groundbreaking album.
Not really a lot to say except that they are a group of geniuses in terms of artistic and thought out expressive art. I know them mostly from their live performance Stop Making Sense, though I enjoyed this look into their early years a lot. This album is quite rough around the edges, but wonderfully so.
Really good! Very mature for a debut. Groundbreaking and singular for its time (other than Marquee Moon from earlier that same year). My Top 3: 3. Happy Day 2. Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town 1. Don't Worry About the Government
I listened to this album
such a great album
Ah, good old Talking Heads. This is a great and fun listen as expected. Might not be my favorite record by them but I still like it a lot.Talking Heads doesn’t disappoint! (Doesn’t disappoint me at least, lol)
Classic Talking Heads. Love the energy. Crazy that this is their debut album! Sound like nobody else, right out of the gate. Am slightly irritated that my favorite TH album, Little Creatures, didn’t make the list. But all the stars to this one.
