Reviews (page 3 of 14)
Timeless really, 47 years old and could be released today. Contains the classic Psycho Killer a track so fresh it would be a hit if released in 2024.
Really creative songwriting and a great early autumn vibefest. Had to listen to it again because the music in the supermarket was too loud and I wasn't even mad. Danced along in the kitchen, though I did cry a bit from jealousy :(( I want mY house to have every convenience!
Fun, quirky, and wildly original.
Fantastic with some all-time classic bangers
absolutely amazing album listen to hundreds of times over the years.
One of my top five albums of all time. Underrated masterpiece.
This is #day26 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... Talking Heads happened to me in 2014 when I was 24. Seeing a Stop Making Sense concert movie at one of the local pubs here in Lviv was both eccentric and entertaining. Looking back, I can say it was the right time: in 2004, I was soaking up electronic and rock music, which would define my taste later on, so, one way or another, 2014 marked a new decade of my music revelations. The result? Talking Heads have stayed with me, becoming one of my favorite bands. Although I prefer a run of their albums from 1979 to 1983, I still find the debut fu-fu-fu-fun to listen to. This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day27.
This is my favorite Talking Heads record, not their best, but my favorite. I love every single song and everything about this album, it's the album that got me in to them, and I love listening to this. Also "Sugar on my Tongue" is one of the strongest non-album extra tracks that exists from any album.
10/10 for armenian minivan ride
I love This album.
Talking Heads: 77 is the debut work from the band, and includes one of their biggest hits, "Psycho Killer." The band created a nervous, dorky version of funk, let by the awkward, intellectualized lyrics from David Byrne. Their songs paint pictures of a character fitting into - and not fitting into - his world, which makes their music feel related to punk. The band created music with a rhythmically complicated version of minimalism: simple melodic progressions played with interesting rhythms. This helps makes the Talking Head's version of punk - a dorky, funky, punk - into work with popular appeal. 77 shows the early version of the band, with all of the elements that would make the band into stars. These tracks may lack the polish of the Talking Heads' later work, but they show the potential of the band and the engaging sound they were developing.
All nervous energy and funky grooves, this is the tense and frenetic music of a band in a hurry, pushing post punk into new wave and already looking beyond - they're not fully realized yet, but when a band's first song is Psycho Killer they're in for great things.
One of the best albums I have listened in this challenge so far.
GREAT
Yeah yeah
you can definitely hear that they're still figuring out but they're clearly just having so much fun :) I don't think they can really do anything wrong even if this is one of their weaker records
First of their albums I bought for myself after realizing the greatness of this band, probably right after Stop Making Sense came out. It took me a few listens before I embraced every track but there's no going back now. Word.
Great and way ahead of its time. Found the original version (not the remastered), still sounded fresh almost 50 years later.
One of my favourite albums! Can’t give less then a 5!
Just great. You Pulled me Up!
Talking Heads - one of the groups I dived into because of this project. This is an effortlessly good album.
a true inspiration to all autism-coded individuals that you too can make one of the greatest art rock albums of all time, as long as you all absolutely fucking hate each other. sometimes that is art's greatest crucible. Talking Heads 77 and Remain in Light are in the Matt Canon for a reason. some of this album fails, but I dont care. all I want is ambition. pop and rock music shouldn't be afraid to make your brain itch.
It makes me feel like I am in a radio station in usa
5 out of 5. An album that started it all for a great band with I think a great consistent output.
Probably my favorite Talking Heads album. It’s just so good. Every song is absolutely stellar, and there are no weak tracks. “Psycho Killer” is an elite song; one you have to sing along to at the top of your lungs whenever you hear it. But “Uh Oh, Love Comes to Town,” “No Compassion,” “Pulled Up,” and honestly every other song… just cannot choose a favorite. Might not be possible. It’s been awhile since I’ve listened to this, and I forgot just how good it is. This album will be on heavy rotation for me for at least the next month.
neurodivergent anthems...probably my favorite Heads album in its effortlessness, never feels like anything is trying to impress and the coziness of the soundscape and hyper-specificity of the lyricism gets right at my heart 10/10
You've often heard it said ’there is a fine line between genius and mental illness'. Well if this is the result of either I’m all for it. Even if I won’t ever fully understand it, I just bopped in place for the full 55 mins. At this point it would be crass to dissect art.
Until True Stories I would say there's an argument for saying TH had the greatest ever run of albums from debut - six studio, one live - all five stars. Nobody's going to make a case for Please Please or The Rolling stones as five star albums, if anyone can find a better run of six I'll be keen to hear. Yes this is 5 stars, not a bad track on it.
I have this thing with this album. When I first start listening, I find it jarring and hard to get into. About 4-5 tracks in, it takes off. It’s incredible. I play it back through and the first 4/5 tracks are some of my faves! It’s like I need to get into a David Byrne frame of mind! Incredible although not their best album 4.6
maybe my favorite Talking Heads album? Always hard to say.
This wasn't my first entry point into Talking Heads, and I imagine most people are introduced to them through material from the "big-suit" era grandiosity when many of their ideas were fully cooked. For that reason it's nice to go back to this album when it was just 3 art school kids writing quirky songs in a NY cheap loft apartment. This captures them in the era when their ideas were so new that everyone preferred they changed course, being misunderstood at every turn. They took that feeling of disconnect and made a career out of it. 77 is the toe in that pure water, before anyone was latching on a bandwagon, the only people who believed in what they were doing were themselves and a select few. Not even the album's producer got what they were trying to do, which you can hear the effect of. It wasn't til the follow-up, More Songs About Buildings and Food, that they'd find a cohort in Eno being behind the boards, resulting in a far more exciting sound. That uncomfortable disconnect you hear in this album is one that Byrne & co were all too familiar with, however. Where other bands would slip through the cracks of that disconnection, awkward art kid ensemble 1977 Talking Heads had lived in that crack their whole life, and built their own little universe inside.
4.5/5
Love this album!
fun!
Algunos temas serán inolvidables. Pero el Disco en su conjunto no se inscribe entre los
Idc I had fun listening to this
Another banger from Talking Heads, love it!!! Stand outs: No compassion, Don’t worry about the government (my fav?), Psycho Killer, Love —> building on fire, I wish you wouldn’t say that, I feel it in my heart, and Sugar on my tongue. So basically the entire album!!!
Party Punk! AYAYAYAYAY!
The Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands, curious as to why I've gotten '77 and More Songs About Buildings and Food instead of Fear of Music and Remain In Light but whatever. Quirky, upbeat and edgy with some really creative and unique lyrics. Favorite tracks are Psycho Killer, Pulled Up, No Compassion & Don't Worry About the Government.
I saw Stop making Sense in cinema last week. Been wanting to listen to more TH since.
I didn't get this album when it was first released -- but as I listened to more of the Talking Heads, I because a real fan. This is a great reminder of where the band started out.
This band is one of the most important in history and even thou famous and well known I feel they are still uneerrated. Byrnes knowledge of music history is so vast that his influences on this album come from every genere and country. They influenced tons of bands and this album is the reason why. An album with 1 single yet all the songs are great and different. Simy amazing
Guay. Sus canciones parecidas a Bowie. Suenan muy parecidas a Phsyco Killer.
Great introduction to the band.
I love love love this record. This is the sound of an outsider, trying to understand what it is to be an insider.
Any album that has me dancing despite myself at 6 am is a 10/10!
Day122 - so good that psycho killer isn’t even the best song on the album. uh-oh loves comes to town and don’t worry about the government are amazing.
Fantastic first album from one of my favorite bands.
Fantastic. I knew a few from a box set but many were new and flowed nicely as a whole
One of my all-time favorites. You can hear how influential they were on many bands.
Debuts often strike of amateur or misguided inspiration, but in Talking Heads' case all that really results in is that the music is above and beyond unchained from the ethics of conventionality. They shriek in fun and beat down some parasitic earworms.
Another classic
This came out when I was 22, my senior year of college. A great debut — quirky, fun, rhythmic. Their first 4 albums are among the 1,001 (all in the 380-480 range) and will all be 5s for me. Their 5th, Speaking in Tongues would qualify as well. After that, things drop off for their last 3 studio albums, when discord in the group impacted the music. The best concert I ever attended, part of the Stop Making Sense tour. The concert movie, directed by Jonathan Demme, is a must see, available through the DMPL on DVD.
YES I've been waiting for some Talking Heads. I fucking love them, they are my favorite pre-90s band. Y'all have probably seen me in my TH shirt before. Their first 5 albums are all masterpieces, and it all started with this one. I picked up a vinyl copy of this a year ago to the week when I was in San Diego for my cousin's wedding. It's the most recent and 4th addition to my Talking Heads collection. My mom and I have bonded a lot over our love for these guys, we saw David Byrne's broadway show together before Covid. Anyways, they really open with a bang with the first 2 songs; total rockers. "No Compassion" is also a straight banger. "Psycho Killer" is an iconic song of course. Their music is so unusual and extraordinary, while using the most ordinary of rock instruments, it's magical. I really wish I was alive during the late 70s-early 80s so I could've experienced the magic firsthand.
Album 388 of 1001 Talking Heads - Talking Heads 77 Rating : 4.5 / 5 Awesome debut album. I got to know them when they appeared on SNL in '79. Would have liked to have been turned on to this one back then. What a force.
Cool Album!
To be quite honest it's a shame that I had to start my music journey with Talking Heads by listening to 'Remain in Light' which in my opinion is one of the best albums ever created. Then I had a chance to listen to More Songs About Buildings and Food and right now their debut album. And you know what, it's also great record, I mean not as good as Remain in Light but Dear God, when you look at Talking Heads discography, you pretty much can't say nothing wrong. 5/5
Incredible. Not much else that can be said that hasn’t been said already.
I love the talking heads so much Great debut This is probably technically a 4.5 since I know I like some of their later albums more
Quite possibly my favorite Talking Heads record.
Love it
soooo good. maybe the first album i’ve had on here that i felt could’ve been longer.
Wicked. Such a cool blend of disco grooves and post punk sensibilities, where not a single sound is wasted - production so fine every lick can be heard and nothing is lost. Byrne rattles away joyfully on every track with huge vocal leaps, getting lost in strange romance and bemoaning how modern comforts are taken for granted. The art student's alternative - less gritty than Lou Reed, poppier than Joy Division, and with a brain and a pulse, too.
It's an art piece! You will enjoy this a lot more if you take a naive approach and reject the notion that every band or album has to belong to some genre. For example, Wikipedia puts the song "Psycho Killer" alone into no less than 6, from art punk (wat?) to no wave (sure, okay). Just relax and allow Talking Heads '77 to reveal it's true nature. Talking Heads laissez-faire approach to music frees them as songwriters to rummage around in your psyche and find whatever weirdness they can turn up. Like when you go to a new town, everything familiar is a little different. Songs about the mundane that reveal other concepts about ourselves without force or irony. Groundbreaking yet catchy, odd but confident. Some of David Byrne's most entertaining and interesting vocals on all of the Talking Heads records are here. A really important album for the future of the metagenre known as alternative rock and a home run on their first at-bat. I was complaining I was down in the dumps I feel so strong now 'cause you pulled me up
Had me vibing all weekend
Brilliant album. David Byrne is something else.
Great first album
The more I listen to Talking Heads, the more I feel at home with them. This record just feels like something I've been listening to for years, on regular rotation. Psycho Killer is obviously familiar (and is the runaway winner of the album), but everything else has its own charm. It feels simpler than the band's latter records, but already they sound so good. I even enjoyed the constant 'yayayas,' it felt like a little inside joke throughout. Besides Psycho Killer, other standout tracks are Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, New Feeling, and No Compassion.
great!
The very first time I listened to this album, I was working in a record store in northern California, I knew it was an instant hit. Every Single. Song. It was top notch originality and I played this album over and over, sold 50 copies of it in 3 days. I had seen them perform a free concert in Berkeley just a few days before the record came into our store. I knew I was in the presence of greatness. Okay that's all.
masterpiece
Listened 3/7/24. Groundbreaking, wonderful album. Not even talking heads best, but still 5 stars
Amazing album
iconique
I knew psycho killer, but I was surprised to desicover the entire album is that level of quality. I was surprised how much I liked this.
Absolutely love Talking Heads. This album is great.
so damn good. danceable, good vibes, reminds me of my family. top 3: psycho killer, no compassion, pulled up honorable mention: new feeling
Yes, please!!! Full of energy. New wave vibing. Ear candy for me today!!!
Is this my favorite Talking Head record? Maaaaaaaybe
Listened Before: N Absolutely killer album! I was expecting to like some of this (based on past experience with TH), but I loved nearly every song on this one. I've already listened to it 3 times, and I will have it in rotation for a while. Added to Library? Y Songs added to playlist: Don't Worry About the Government, Psycho Killer
Top to bottom there isn't a single track that's skippable.
Uh oh, love comes to town & psycho killer
This is the first album I can remember buying by the Talking Heads and, for many years, it was my immediate answer if you were to ask me which album was my favorite. I tend to listen more broadly nowadays to all the band's albums, but '77 stands out starkly against everything else the band ever made. It's T-Heads in their purest form, with a sly simplicity that speaks volumes. It's hard to even talk about an album like this without comparing it to everything that came after it, it's so unique. And it absolutely had a profound influence on numerous artists and genres that would follow, but somehow '77 remains its own thing. The vibe of this album is a study in contradictions, quirky and detached, but heartfelt; funky, but awkward; melodic, but angular; intellectual, but whimsical; all of this with a low-key undercurrent of tension and even menace. The group as a whole is nimble, nuanced, deeply creative, with a compelling lead in David Byrne and some truly striking uses of guitar. I find that some of these songs need to be listened to a few times to really warm up to them, but there isn't a bad song to be found on here. Considering the band is barely getting started here, it's pretty masterful. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Psycho Killer; The Book I Read; Pulled Up; First Week/Last Week… Carefree; Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town; No Compassion; New Feeling; Who Is It?; Happy Day; Don't Worry About the Government; Tentative Decisions
Classic HEADS! Saw the heads in 83 https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/talking-heads/1983/broome-county-veterans-memorial-arena-binghamton-ny-23c7a81b.html Psycho Killer in pure white lighted stage. Incredible.
* Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town - I dig this. Has a "Come and Get Your Love" kinda riff. He talks about his friends a lot. Acoustic "Psycho Killer" sound the same. I liked this much more than Fear of Music. It's much catchier and. More musical, I guess.
Brilliant
PSYCHO KILLER, QU'EST-CE QUE C'EST? (papapapapapaaa)
I love the album generator because I don't know that I ever would have found this album on my own! Fun. Irreverent. Upbeat. Loved it!
Love all of them
Talking Heads are my favourite discovery from doing this challenge. It was love at first listen when I got Fear of Music almost two years ago. They’re one of those bands I can’t believe I hadn’t been listening to already. Anyway, I loved hearing this album. While it’s not quite as strong as their later stuff, it’s still good to me.
5. Fricken sick
In the early 1990s I did a study abroad in Moscow and I went with some friends to a David Byrne concert, not knowing anything about him. I was transfixed by his performance, and have been a fan of him and the Talking Heads ever since. This album is a great way to start the day - infectious beats, quirky lyrics, and relentless enthusiasm. This is the first time since I started playing an album a day where the album ended way before I was ready to stop listening to it.
Amazing
Not their masterpiece, but the songwriting is so good and so catchy that I can't imagine rating it any lower.
The Best!
brilliant
New wave born with a bang. Always loved the Talking Heads and this album gets beyond the hits to show just how deep they could go, especially on a debut! Always another layer of tight musicianship to hone in on and David Byrne's vocals are iconic. Big re-listener!
Mejor disco del mundo. Talking Heads fue una de las primeras bandas que me mostró mi papá. Amo este disco, te amo David Byrne, te amo papá.
This is one of my favorite albums. I like it.
5 stars 5 stars
The Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands and I love everything about this album.
A true classic. I did not know all the songs but I was happy that they were all great. Maybe this is not their strongest release but it’s sure better then some other records from this period.
Fantastic, cutting edge music for the time.
Love, love, love this band. The roots of funk, soul, punk, and garage rock make for a really magical connection in all of their works. Favorite track: Psycho Killer
I had listened to Fear Of Music previously on the list and noted that it wasn't really my style back then. That's completely changed. Listening to this now really opened my eyes, even if it's slightly different from Fear Of Music it's got so much character and it's just really well made. I love it's uniqueness and the constant blend of sounds. Simply put, I get it, and I love it.
Talking Heads is such an iconic band and their debut album is nothing short of stunning. 5/5. Favorite Track: Psycho Killer
Juste parfait.
Don't worry about the government is great
I’m sure that Talking Heads is one of those bands where if I they’re playing on the radio, I’ll often say, “Oooh this is good, who is it?” To which Rach usually tells me. Based on that, I’m hoping this will be a good listen today. Songs I already knew: Psycho Killer Favourites: Psycho Killer, Uh-Oh Live Comes To Town I love how diverse this album is! The opening track initially sounds like something Creedence Clearwater Revival might write, and then suddenly off the top rope we get some steel drums out of nowhere. The music is catchy from front to back, and demonstrates excellent 70’s pop rock. There wasn’t any part of this that I didn’t enjoy, so this is very easy to rate as far as I’m concerned.
I like this a lot, good style. Will I listen to again: 100%
Look it's talking heads. True fact that they Slap
One of my mom's fave bands and she knows nothing about them 😞
Exceptional album that never would have thought to listen to in its entirety on its own. Love this service so far!
Sugar on my tongue👅
Psycho Killer is my jam and I love the rest of the album. Instant 5/5.
Guay. Sus canciones parecidas a Bowie. Suenan muy parecidas a Phsyco Killer.
Wonderful album. I love "Psycho Killer"! This made me realize I don't listen to enough Talking Heads.
One of the greatest debut albums in rock history. Unique, fun, and new.
It took me a while to enjoy this album. It took me a while to enjoy the Talking Heads as well. The expanded version of this album is better than the original version. The four songs (not including the acoustic "Psycho Killer") that are added in the expanded version are as good (and probably better) than the 11 original songs. I am definitely more of a "hits" Talking Heads fan than I am an album fan. I think this is an important album to hear even if you don't "get it."
An all time favorite album and for me, an all time debut album by a one of a kind band. Tina's basslines are just chunky as hell all over this record. I have gone blue in the face attempting to sign along to Book I Read and just about every other track on this one.
Already a banger, five outta five.
UGH I love this album.
I love the Talking Heads so it was a treat to listen to this album all the way through. 5 stars!
Great album overall and the songs feel timeless. Psycho Killer is of course one of the greatest
This is what I'm doing this for. I knew of Talking Heads, but had never listened or been interested in listening to them, but now I've listened to this I have found a new favourite band. This is just a really great album, start to finish.
Probably their easiest album to get in to and my second Favourite after remain in light
I can agree with some of the folks saying that this is mid-tier Talking Heads to a degree, it's no Fear of Music/Remain In Light imo. But one band's 4th best album is still way the hell better than anything most bands could hope to put out. 🤘
I had heard several of their songs throughout my life not knowing the name of the band, or that they were from the same band All excellent and well heard. "Oh yeah! I know this song!"
Fucking love the Talking Heads. What a debut album. To make objectively weird music patterns sound this tight is the biggest mark of a talented band you can possibly get. I think my favorite part about Talking Heads is how it sounds like they could break out into a jam session at literally any moment on any of their tracks. Favorite track: The Book I Read
Talking Heads album! It’s also my brother’s birthday but this far outweighs that. Even though this isn’t even my first. Whatever Talking Heads are my band right now. I hadn’t heard this one before (outside of the obvious ‘Psycho Killer’, plus ‘Uh-Oh, Love Comes To Town’) but this is great; poppier, but still retaining elements of their best work. Some of my favorite songs other than the ones I had already heard are ‘No Compassion’, ‘The Book I Read’, and ‘First Week/Last Week….Carefree’. Though not the best of their albums, still amazing.
Talking heads
5/5
Hell yes. I've been listening to this for years, but sometimes their early albums sound like "the juvenalia leading up to Remain in Light". Actually this is an audacious good debut album. Arty weirdo rock that stays wildly carefree and fun. I love how the the lyrics, the voice and the music all have a tendency to tailspin into free association, then come back again. It's an incredibly satisfying record from front to back, and if the Talking Heads had stopped here it would still be a landmark album. 5*
Great
Amazing, love David Byrne
Love it love it love it
Really good, with a bunch of classics in it.
Great album. New wave at it's finest.
nice
Really found their sound early. Later albums get more introspective but damn.
Day 116 The Talking Heads are easily one of my favourite bands ever; those who know me well know that I don't drop "favourite" and "ever" within the same sentence that easily. And '77 is also one of my favourite debut albums ever. I know some may say that their following albums were "better"; in my opinion those other albums only improved on their formula, but this is a very accomplished debut, the band sounds fully formed, and all the elements of the next few albums were already there: steel drums and calypso rhythms on the opening track Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town and more Latin on Tentative Decisions, the funk on New Feeling and Who Is It?, reggae and afro on First Week/Last Week... Carefree. And then the overall quirkiness, and especially the neurotic histrionics of Byrne, Psycho Killer being an all time classic, while No Compassion might as well be the perfect new wave song.
Perfect
Great album that epitomizes the post-punk, new wave genre. Psycho Killer is such a great song, with a driving bass line. Overall a great album
Talking Heads are the best band of their generation I reckon. Possibly till I remember another one and praise them similarly, but they are just on another level to most. The perfect blend of the best elements of a great record: jangly, art/punk/rock, intense, chilled, weird, strange, normal, all at once. Maybe not normal, they’re anything but normal. But they make the strange seem normal. I fell in love with Talking Heads after watching Stop Making Sense. They’re a bit like Sparks in a way where you need to see them to believe ‘em. That live show totally changed my outlook on music and nailed what it was I always liked about music but couldnt put down. I think this was their debut, which is mental for me to comprehend. They were young, in a world of punk, motown and glam rock, and they came up with this. Absolutely class. I also came up with what I think is the best football chant ever to the tune of Psycho Killer, all about the Sunderland defensive unit of 2011-2012, but alas it never caught on and would now require a lot of players coming out of retirement to ever see the light of day. I like to think David Byrne would be proud.
Completely on the talking heads train now. I bet all music critics constantly describe them as "irreverent" and there's a good chunk of my favourite bands that fall into that category. Was already giving it a 5 before psycho killer but that is the best track.
The debut album from the Talking Heads, is a true classic of the NYC OG new wave error. This is stripped down, artsy, new wave at its best. It's weird and quirky at times, but that's what Talking Heads in 1977 were all about. By the time the 80s rolled around, the Heads had adopted world music pretenses and, while producing classics of the MTV era, were a very different kind of band. This is the Talking Heads at their most raw and most pure.
another one already in my library. 5 stars obviously
This contains punk ethics, but abandons the abrasive & harsh tone sounding, adds much more intellectual stance delivered with very dancey shaking, and, even something or more that I'm not really able to recognize at first listening. Plus, within this formal rock group set up, the guitar isn't lead instrument anymore, and even soloing would be left out permanently in their later records. Fav Track: The Book I Read
It's a five from me. Aside from the obvious banger Psycho Killer and Psycho Killer acoustic (which we managed to get the 1 year old to sing along to 🎶 ) I loved the debut album, Sugar on my tongue, First Week/Last Week and Pulled Up we're bangers too. I'm going to go listen to more and rewatch some YouTube Clips of them 🫠
псайко киллер кис кис кис
ой если прошлым альбомам не хватало писечки, то вот сейчас чет ёбнуло. может потому, что ревью пишется в 2:28 и я просто ёбнулся, но это топ недели жб
TH is always in my Top 5. Psycho Killer.
Loved it
Love the sound of this album. Average vibes per song very high. PSycho Killer obviously a jam
I mean it's a fucking classic. So listenable, great lyrics really fun hooks. I love new wave and I love this record.
Genre: Talking Heads Review: Unique, path-breaking and still as fresh and exciting as it was all those years ago. Rating: A "once-in-a-lifetime" 10/10
Holy S$!@ this album EVERY TIME!! I wish we had a 6th star we could give to the albums that feel extra special
Hell yeah!
cool
Believe, I believe in mystery Love, love, love, love is simple as 1-2-3 My favorite Talking Heads album
Love talking heads, 1st album
As I said, I rate this on vibe not necessarily on technical quality.
What a great album David Byrnes sometimes funny, many times dark lyrics hidden behind that staccato singing style Was a great listen
Oooh always nice to hear a Talking Heads album and this is the debut no less. I just think for me Psycho Killer eclipses the rest of the album it's such a fucking genius song and I have a strong love for it. I also just love their sound in general and this is one of those debuts which I think really put their distinct sound out into the world right away, there was no warm up needed. Very impressive and takes some conviction. The beats, the bass, the voice and the lyrics all so brilliant and so unique.
BEAUTIFUL
Such a different sound especially at the time.
Great sound, Talking Heads always has such an interesting energy and this album is no different. Highly recommend.
I love the Talking Heads so much.
Amazing that this was in 1977...it paved the way for a lot of what 80's "New Wave" became. Groundbreaking album.
Loved the album. I’m a big talking heads fan and this was right up my alley
Love the bass
Yeah, good
Not only Psycho Killer, but also the rest of the album show a band on the break of becoming one of the best (and is nearly there).
Molto bello, mi piacciono tutti i brani.
It starts with Tina's bass. It's direct, primitive, a heartbeat. There's an irresistible brew of jagged, danceable tunes with David's voice over the top. He should be irritating but he's not. This is possibly their weakest album yet it's an easy 5. This album came out when I was 17 but I didn't discover it until I was 57.
Now on our third Talking Heads album for this project. Other than Psycho Killer, I don’t recall having heard anything on this album before. On the first listen I was less enthusiastic about this, but then on my second and third listens fell in love with this expectedly weird and quirky ride. So much so that I went back and listened to the Deluxe version with 5 extra songs. Those are great additions to a great album! Psycho Killer acoustic is amazing with that cello!
No one like them, literally
In the tracklist of this debut record there are only masterpieces. More than impressive band and music!
epic
An excellent album with some great songs. And Psycho Killer is phenomenal, I may have given this album 5 just for that one songX luckily, the rest of the album is super strong. David Byrne is the type of artist that people like Bjork wished they were.
Pretty solid album
Another classic album from the best band tbat features in the 1001 album list.
Happy 45th birthday, 77!
Great album.
Brilliant debut. They went on to make better albums but what a first effort. Nobody does rhythms like David Byrne.
Amazing, not the first time listening to it, but definitely a timeless classic
Very inventive and almost camp vocals from David Byrne’s iconic voice mixed with funky r&b, pop and even disco influence. Love child of almost all popular genre’s at the time. I feel as though they didnt take themselves too seriously and it shows on this album. Funky concepts, nonsensical lyrics, and a primal voice makes this album feel fun and inviting. Something to listen to when upset to lift your spirits. Favorite Songs: New Feeling, The Book I Read, Psycho Killer Album Art: its alright, just a plain red background with a contrasting colored title. Simple but gets the job done.
"Psycho Killer, qu'est-ce que c'est ? Pa pa pa paaa pa pa pa paaaa pa pa !" No band ever sounded like the Talking Heads. Originally I was not a *huge* fan--I only knew them through the compilation "Popular Favorites", and also their 1980 masterpiece, "Remain In Light". But since those days, I understood two things: a) Minus stuff on the level of " Once In A Lifetime" or "Psycho Killer", I finally understood that their so-called "popular favorites" are *mostly* NOT among my favorite tracks of theirs. Case in point here, the two first songs of this record, which I absolutely love (and yet were absent from this compilation I mentioned earlier...) b) No compilation, even one as comprehensive as it can reasonably be, can do justice to what the Heads do so brilliantly in their individual records (especially the first four of them). Some tracks take on a different meaning overall during the flow of these individual albums. ALL the songs are adventurous affairs with bold arrangements. And David Byrne can be an impressive storyteller sometimes... Consequently, I now get how this first record of theirs must have been a shock for rock (and punk) fans. This one here is interesting because it predates Brian Eno's involvement with the band. The overall sound is more direct, rawer, which brings a charm that's different from their later output. There's still that influence from protopunk bands such as The Modern Lovers (logical since the two bands had the same second guitarist). To put this in a nutshell, this record is worthy of its legendary status, Number of albums left to review or just listen to: 889 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 59 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 29 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more important): 24
Talking Heads’ debut album is an up tempo, new wave classic and despite the band being but newly formed there is already a remarkable synergy between the band members captured here which points the way forward to even more remarkable material to follow. The vibe is terrific and Psycho Killer loses none of its impact despite its ubiquity, that driving insistent bass and stabbing guitar riff and Byrne’s odd French and classic soul lyrics render an unique experience.
Really enjoyed this album! It was so good.
god damn I’ve always loved the Talking Heads but I had no idea they started out so strong - 10/10 favorite songs are Uh-Oh Love Comes to Town, The Book I Read, First Week / Last Week…. Carefree, and obviously Psycho Killer really incredible album all the way through
The older I get, the more I love the Talking Heads. Everything Talking Heads.
Their third best album Insane basslines throughout
Classic 10/10
Referring to this as not the best Talking Heads release is unfair. There may be no band that maintained as high a standard of excellence for a long career. I can hear on this record the early CBGB influences as well as the idiosyncratic elements that led to the great run of releases in the 80s. There is an edginess that belies the catchy melodies. From day one, the musical interaction between Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth is special (no surprise). My favorite Talking Heads release may differ from day to day, but the band is always in my top five.
Wow, it's like a chiller version of Stop Making Sense
Great voice, tunes and all round fab album!
Great album
5 star +++ Absolute whopper debut album. Cover art 5/5 iconic
Brilliant album. It's creative, engaging and enjoyable. David Byrne is a brilliant musician with brilliant vocals. This is one of the best albums so far!
Love it!
While listening to this I thought to myself "this is about as good as I remember it. But they did top this album later. This is probably worth a 4" by the end of the album I was in such a good mood that I think it deserves the full 5. Even if it doesn't "deserve it" its getting it from me anyway and no one can stop me.
Absolutely
Great great sound. David Byrne is a amazing.
Do they make bad songs? Weird, poppy, angular (again), bouncy.
et af deres bedste
One of the greatest Talking Heads albums, which means it's one of the greatest albums of all time. It has "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town", "Don't Worry About the Government" and "Psycho Killer" a's highlights, but all 11 tracks are new wave classics.
A very important album released when punk and New Wave were on it's verge, contrasted by the threat of disco taking over the airwaves. The Talking Heads, lead by David Byrne emerged from the New York city punk scene playing the dingy clubs such as, CBGB's and Max's that formed a music community of talented and previously unheard artists. The beauty of the first Talking Heads album is it's simplicity, the sound and songs were straight forward, they were unique though, especially Byrne's jittery vocal style and angular guitar sound and Byrne's guitar playing is highly underrated! Though the Heads gained more commercial success as the band's sound expanded into other genre's, Talking Heads 77 will always be considered a landmark record!
Talking Heads is another band I've listened to plenty but haven't listened closely. Great album. The band had their "sound" down from day one. All the tracks are fantastic. Favorites - Psycho Killer (of course), Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, No Compassion ("they say compassion is a virtue, but I don't have the time"), Pulled Up. Just so good. Easy 5.
4/5. Heard it before but a few great tracks on this debut. Kayleigh and Andy did karaoke to Psycho Killer.
i don't have time to write this but it was fun lol
BONISSIM!!
Goed album. Niet verwacht dat ik alle nummers zo tof zou vinden.
pulll me uppp
"Psycho Killer Qu'est-ce que c'est Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-far better Run, run, run, run, run, run, run away oh, oh, oh" Heads, Talking
Gets better with every listen
really amazing album, great cohesion and songwriting. their music only gets better after this point
Fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa fa better.
a classic and awesoeme debut
fodasticoo
Great
Q. What does Shack eat for supper? A. Lamb Chops!
Guay. Sus canciones parecidas a Bowie. Suenan muy parecidas a Phsyco Killer.
LOVED
Imprescindible para entender la música post punk y el arribo de la música pop moderna
A favorite!
I absolutely love this
Fantastic
Have I listened to this album before No How familiar am I with this album Less familiar than any other Talking Heads album How do I feel about this artist? I really like the Talking Heads Pre-Listen Thoughts: The only thing I know here is a psycho killer, I know this isn’t their big break but it’s bound to be pretty good Favorite track(s): Psycho killer Post-Listen Thoughts: I missed my favorites on the other albums, but it was still a great listen. It was a good way to end the week for sure.
I understand the Talking Heads now. Their music is about the small bigness and the big smallness of life. Also Psycho Killers.
Besser als ich dachte, alles klingt zwar etwas repetitive aber ansonsten echt cooles Album
I had not heard this in many years, and it is funny now to think that this was called punk rock at the time. Angular, yes, but pretty mild sonically. An interesting listen - thoughtful, precise, erudite, and considered.
Man, this is good. Also this band came out swinging fully formed.
A unique sound mixing despair, yearning and joy. Low on melody it washes over like a rythmic wailing meditation. A tribal dance. Almost improvisational in its pitch.
토킹헤즈 짱
second half better than first half
I don’t think I realised how familiar this band would be before listening. I’ve definitely danced to Psychokiller before, not realizing it was a TH song, but after listening here, I was excited to revisit bands like Orange Juice and a lot of early-aughts post-punk (The Rapture, etc.) just for the vibes.
La cosa bien hecha pero poco emocionante.
It's hard to believe that Talking Heads released this record in 1977, despite the title. If you told me it came out in 1987, I'd be more inclined to believe it. '77 is well produced, smartly written, and a whole lot of fun. It's not perfect, but Byrne and Co. delivered the goods on this one.
Really liked it - no real appreciation of talking heads - decent album
Much more of the Talking Heads that I'm used to 4/5
These heads certainly are talking. I enjoyed this one more than the other talking heads album we listened to already. I loved when they were like Qu'est que c'est. Huuuuge French fan
I like Talking Heads because of their very interesting vocals, although this album felt just a bit like too much of the same
Never sat down to listen to talking heads before this. There is a reason talking heads is as popular as they are, very hip upbeat and dancy for those 70's and 80's nights. Not a massive fan but can see why some of their most popular songs are in this album
A strong debut. My comments are pretty similar to when I had the follow up to this album, ‘More Songs about Buildings and Food’- it’s a fun and enjoyable album with a nice sound and some classic songs, in this case led by Psycho Killer (contrary to the belief of some, unconnected to the Son of Sam murders in their home city of New York in the year of release). Like that first one, it perhaps just lacks that final gloss to take it to 5*, something that is magnified as a debut album.
While it may not reach the highs of their later few albums, this is still a great record and introduction to one of America's greatest bands. Although the band were still finding their feet, and the album is more song-oriented than later works, there was already evidence of what would become their signature style with an offbeat mix of funk-inspired grooves and punk energy. 'Psycho Killer' remains one of their most iconic tracks with good reason, 'Don't Worry About the Government' and opener 'Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town' are my other favourites.
I wavered between 4 and 5 stars on this one, but eventually decided it was just lacking a little something to take it over the edge. But this is still a great debut album from a great band, with some really strong highlights. ‘Psycho Killer’ is the obvious pick, but I also love both the opening and closing tracks, plus ‘Happy Day’, ‘No Compassion’, ‘The Book I Read’ and ‘Don’t Worry About the Government’. Conversely, while I wouldn’t call them duds, I’m not a huge fan of ‘Tentative Decision’ or ‘First Week/Last Week…Carefree’. Still a brilliant first effort overall.
Oops. I may have accidentally written off, ignored, brushed off and otherwise forgotten about a very cool little album. Was Talking Heads '77 always this good? I don't think it was.
I seem to be handing out 4s like a cheerleader lately, but if anyone deserves these stars, it’s Mr Byrne. The man is a treasure.
This album started off super great with Love comes to town. I thought it was a great track with some super fun lyrics. New feeling was an absolute bop. I thought it was very interesting beat, honestly the same with tentative decisions (which I also loved the name of). Happy day wasn’t as happy as I expected it to be. I didn’t like Who is it personally, but I thought it was super super fun! Worry about the government was actually great. The beat and vocals worked so well together. Psycho killer is obviously great. No notes. Pulled up was a very strange way to end this. It was quite different from the rest of the album. Whatever, it was still a good album. 4/5 ⭐️ 179/1089
very enjoyable album, not the best but still a good album
++: Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town, New Feeling, Who Is It?, No Compassion, The Book I Read, Psycho Killer, Pulled Up +: Happy Day, Don't Worry About the Government, First Week/Last Week...Carefree +-: Tentative Decisions 8,5/10
Good album
Ganz nett, macht gute Laune
fuh fuh fuh fuh fuh FAH
I've explored Talking Heads a bit but not too much. This is pretty solid. Doesn't hit the highs some of their work does for me, but I can't complain about it. Good music, David Byrne doing David Byrne things. I used to DESPISE "Psycho Killer" but I enjoy it now.
Adore this album and this band. Hard not to give it a 5 but it may be outside of my top 5 Talking Heads albums so 4 it is.
A tale of 2 sides. Side B is significantly better than Side A. Side A is like a warm up that starts off really well and then throws in a some great songs every now and then in Tentative Decisions and No Compassion, but side B is sensational . In fact side B is 5 stars. Standout Song is Pulled Up, closely followed by Psycho Killer and Don't worry about the government. just a pity the first side is not quite up to the same standard as the second side. 4.5 stars added note: It is a pity that Love --> building on Fire was not included in the actual album
fa fa fa fa far better a lot of these albums have just one song that i know lol anyway i like it but i don’t love it, was fun to actually know what album that song comes from
I like this. psycho killer is obviously brilliant and, even though the talking heads are not really my kind of genre (what genre are they anyway? They are quite unique) I found myself interested in what was coming next from start to finish.
Przyjemniaczek, zadna z piosenek nie dorasta do intra z Remain in Light, ale sluchalo sie dobrze
Talking Heads were definitely a staple on the alternative radio station, though by the late eighties is was more of their later hits -- I didn't really know this album at all other than Psycho Killer. It's a little challenging to listen to this with 2026 ears and appreciate the impact this would have had on the musical landscape in 1977, though I feel like we got a little taste of it listening to Television recently. But I have to say this was an enjoyable listen. David Byrne's voice is so unique I feel like I could pick it out of any unfamiliar Talking Heads song without knowing it's Talking Heads. The steel drums in the opening song were very cool. The repetetive nature of Last Week was a little off putting, but other than that the songwriting offers enough variety to keep things interesting.
The debut of a band I’ve heard of but never heard anything from. This was cool and eccentric, plenty of weird, interesting instrumental ideas and vocals from Byrne. I didn’t necessarily love anything all that much but the influence and quality are difficult to deny. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Pulled Up, Psycho Killer
Love Talking Head, love the 80s trend of having a complete raving lunatic as a front man. Love cocaine. Love songs about apartments that you want to live in that have good convenience. But, it's a 4 because he really can't sing yet and Tina Weymouth is on of the greatest bassist in rock and pop history and the mix is so tinny you can barely hear her! It gets better for them, way better.
Да, это прикольный, хороший альбом. Но лично для меня из истории послушал и забыл, имхо не хватило ощущения цельности альбому, больше вайб сборника песен. Слушается одним большим полотном музыки, да хорошей музыки, но всё равно одним полотном
I enjoyed this a lot more than more songs about buildings and food- feels more focused, cohesive, and hungry. Favorites: “uh oh love comes to town”, “No compassion🏆”,”psycho killer” ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5
David Byrne is a genius. Such a vision right from the start.
Such a creative force, David Byrne. I don't always want to listen to his music over and over but I always want to hear what he is up to next.
A swell debut of disco, punk, and other mashups. 'Talking Heads: 77' isn't the band's best--that would be 'Speaking in Tongues'--but this was a tough call between a four or five star. In the end, I went four but I could change my mind soon. Top tracks: "Psycho Killer," "No Compassion," "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town"
--Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town...oh yeah, that's the stuff. gimme steelpan --New Feeling...Tina doing work --Tentative Decisions...kind of a march. piano outro is fun --Happy Day...really like the guitar tone. Byrne maybe a little too confident in his voice here --Who Is It?...quick, weird, and fun --No Compassion...bit of an epic. groovy track with a few twists --The Book I Read...slick groove but a little niche overall. which describes the band, I suppose --Don't Worry About the Government...is this about zoning laws? --"First Week/Last Week…Carefree"...there's an ellipses in the title of this song. my poor formatting choices haunting me. nice reggae beat. then we bring in the sax! fun times --Psycho Killer...classic --Pulled Up...killer closer
3.5⭐️/5 06.10.2026
Never really listened to much of talking heads except for their live album Stop Making Sense, which I think is considered to be their best work. Despite this, I did enjoy their debut album quite a bit. I do how satisfying the percussive elements are and Tina Weymouth puts out some very memorable basslines. I will definitely listen to their other albums in future
A very fun album that is absolutely dominated by some excellent guitar work and catchy hooks. At only 38 minutes, it absolutely flies by and leaves you wanting more, and is one I will definitely come back to.
Um ótimo classico
Really enjoyed this. I've not listened to much talking heads before, but I could definitely hear how they've influenced other bands. Great album, would listen again
Choppy, catchy and upbeat, the Talking Heads' debut cements them as a standout act in New York's bustling 70s scene. Simple (as one-two-three!) but with many underlying complex elements, fun but disturbing in many ways, it's a great album to immerse oneself in. 3.5/5
I was be-booping around the whole time
One of the many things that makes Talking Heads unique: They're an incredible studio band (thanks Brian Eno!) but are also transcendent live performers. When I listen to this record now, as a Talking Heads fan, it feels very quaint. Like they were all just learning their instruments. It isn't quite "there" yet, and I guess that's charming. But I'd rather listen to most of their other records. 4⭐️
Весёлый, летний альбом. Твёрдая 8 из 10

One massive hit and they certainly sound different from everyone else. Interesting listen. I can understand if you don't like David Byrne's vocals but to me they are appealing. Recommended.
Poppier and more enjoyable than I expected given that I've never liked Psycho Killer. Definitely a solid debut Fav track: No Compassion
71/100. A fun and creative introduction to the Talking Heads. An impressive debut that laid the groundwork for what would become one of the most iconic bands in the new wave scene.
belle découverte franchement
Day 288 Highlights Happy Day Psycho Killer Pulled Up
still sounds weird, nervous, smart, and completely fresh almost 50 years later.
Not bad at all!
my bitch like david byrne she let that head do the talking
70’s New Wave ⭐️Psycho Killer
This is the most British sounding American band I've ever heard. Talking Heads 77 has a lot of good and a lot of empty rambling. The main problem when listening to this record is that some tracks feel like they're missing instruments. I don't know how to explain it, but the songs feel unfinished sometimes. However, the tracks that bang, certainly do bang. The latter half of the album is surprisingly better than the front, which is the opposite for most records. It's fun music, but sometimes David Byrne is just blabbering about straight nothing. I guess it's fitting cause they're the Talking Heads. Safe to say it was an enjoyable experience overall.
Dope
That's fun and I like them, but something always seems of for me in their music, it's too major
Great listen
Très content d’écouter ce premier album des TH. C’est déjà tout à fait leur style No compassion ! C’était bien !
4,8/5 ✱✱✱✱✱
DAVID BYRNE U WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS Funky white dad music ily Other people’s problems overwhelm my mind too, David. Fav song: Pulled Up
Psycho Killer is such a song of all time. Something about this music is very nonbinary. be sure to get a lot of fiber in your diet 7.395/10
